Faction: Duchy of Gobopolis

Originally forming as a mining union of freed ogre slaves the Duchy of Gobopolis is a true rags to riches story. Built by goblins for goblins the duchy stands as a symbol of the Kingdoms of Roggars continued friendship towards all Gobbo-kind. Through turmoil and terror the duchy has grown and prospered to be one of the richest states with Roggar, importing all sorts of luxury goods and exporting the finest of wines and gold. In recent years a branch family the Deft-Hands has established itself as subservient to the Steppes king and has claimed a lordship there. After the Patriotic war a Swift-Hands king was elected who ruled through a golden age but was a recluse spending most of his time on Sentinel Prime. He was assassinated by dark elves but would always be remembered from ruling over a time of economic prosperity and pace.

Goals for the Great Rhoznax Crusade
-Removal of Rhoznax Influence from Northern Setyrias and creation of a lesser principality for the Ezirin people.
-Creation of Two Pantheonic Buffer Principalities in the South, specifically the Southern Dwarves and Black Orcs
-Culling of Rhoznax influence worldwide by coordination with the

Paitran-Dwarven Contributions

For the first strike of this Crusade the combined armies of the Paitrans and Kragnal will march on Ezirin drawing the main Rhoznax forces to arms and slowly advancing, not wasting men by taking cities by storm but a slow and steady advance. After Ezirin is secured the main Paitran force wills tay in the area to secure Ezirin while the Kragnal shall move to link up with Roggar and move into the mountains

Roggarian Contributions

Roggar shall cut through southern Ezirin and strike to cut off the mountain pass to stop anymore Rhoznax reinforcements after the Paitran/Kragnal forces begin their attack. After the Roggarian forces will help mop up Rhoznax resistance and establish a firm hold on the Ezirin Region. After Roggar shall link up with Kragnal and move down into the southern mountain region.

Anglanorse Contributions

The Anglanorse hold the greatest fleet and most seasoned naval warriors in all the HPE. They will set out a year in advance traveling down the Elven sea stopping by several high elven ports preparing to launch a great naval assault into core Rhoznax lands after the main HPE thrust has begun. Their goal is to sack cities, draw enemy forces and generally run amok. Holding territory will be left up the decision of Norse commanders.

Lursar Contributions

The Centaurs forces will attack into the badlands linking up with pro-Pantheon rebels and helping secure a puppet state in the South badlands. If acquired use of a Gerkmank figure head is encouraged. Goal is to grab as much land as possible to avoid Zhong expansion.

High Elven Contributions

The main goal of the High Elven advance will be to cut off the main desert pass leading into Ezirin to cut off Rhoznax reinforcements. Holding and securing this area is key to the whole war effort. Arhceri Isles are also a suggest side front to draw the Rhoznax navy and if they want some easy land gains.

Zhong Contributions

Strike into the North Badlands and take whatever the fuck they want piercing into the central Rhoznax Empire.

Drezvak Contributions

Surge into central Rhoznax

A secret meeting is called in Roggar between the members of the Anti-Rhoznax coalition - the six Kingdoms of the Holy Pantheonic Empire, the High Elf Dominion, the Zhongian Empire, the Drezvak Kingdom and the Serene Republic of Gajaxlan - due to the secrecy needed most nations have sent trusted diplomats and agents rather than their heads.
The diplomats are gathered on the 4th of Domnis, 716 AS in The Citadel - Dragonstomb is a city of close to a million people and there are eyes and ears everywhere - most foreign ships didn't even disembark in the capital's harbor.
The delegates are gathered in the halls of command of The Citadel now. As Roggar called for the meeting, the iniative is ours.

As I'm inconvenienced by the need to root out infiltrators and spies that desire to ruin my noble aspirations for my people I cannot leave Trusted Defense for the time being.
However, my most trusted deputy will attend the meeting. In this world there's nobody else I trust more than him.

Councilor Fish: ...... "bloop".....
The councilor carrying the fishbowl: "As the Trusted Deputy just said, our king has presented to you all a warplan that will benefit all involved and bring these infernal draconic cultists to their knees. Our national interests align and our combined powers will allow us to annihilate all who stand against us."
>>
The plan seems fairly sound on paper, most admit, but the issue at hand stands between the trio of non-Pantheonic allies we have - Gajaxlan, Drezvak and Zhongian. It seems Drezvak and Zhongian both have claims on territories controlled by Gajaxlan, with whom we haven't conducted any diplomacy on this matter beforehand. Splitting up land between these three is also uncertain and their diplomats are squabbling over endless issues dating back centuries.
Potential land distribution plans still haven't been presented to anyone, indeed.

Deliberations have been taking several days as secret meetings between individual representatives and the Roggarian King and Dragon Commander have been taking place. It seems the largest amount of tension is between Zhongian and Gajaxlan.

Caligula Nero, the Trusted Councilor, was from the beginning of his rule known for being a little bit paranoid. This was exemplified in the banishment of Jarreck Vance and the unjust imprisonment of Marcus Rubius, both highly respected men. As the years went on these tendencies only increased, his sanity and morals slowly slipping out of his grasp.
Some were shocked and outraged at his attempt to extort 2 million marks from a murder suspect. It was soon overshadowed by him announcing the promotions of the only ones he could trust. A goldfish as his second in command and his pet snake as commander of the Trusted Guard.
Unfortunately for Caligula, neither Councilor Fish nor Commander Snek had the foresight or ability to take precautions against the rising unrest within Trusted Defense.

Turned out Caligula was well prepared for all conventional rebels, his paranoia paying off at last.
The unruly councilors that planned to carry out a peaceful takeover quickly found themselves exposed and thrown in the dungeons. And the rebellious troops and militiamen commanded by Lord Vance was scattered by the ferocious assault of the Wolf Brigade.
But upon the moment of his triumph, a phantom menace that nobody expected appeared.

1 Councilor Vanders. A pacifist that preaches love, tolerance and poverty relief
2 Councilor Baraka. A man of southern ancestry and a gifted speaker
3 Councilor Chong. The wonderchild, barely ten year old and already a prodigy in all the academic fields.
4 Councilor Lingnu. Often described as Xiahou the bold reborn with the gifts of a scholar rather than a warrior.
5 “BROTHEEER!” Another Neru.
6 Councilor Zhang. Rumored sorceror and holding unhealthy ambitions of power.
7 Councilor Drunf. A former merchant and the richest man in Freehold. Beloved by the people for his no-nonsense talk and charisma.

While some prototypes existed, heavy crossbows were still rare until now - we've supported the transition for our soldiers to the use of newer models of crossbows that have higher drawing weight and thus more piercing power and range. The strings of a heavy crossbow can not be pulled back by hand unless you are an extremely strong individual, so they instead use machinery to assist the wielder - a windlass/crank makes the crossbow operatable by a person of lesser strength. There are several advantages to the crossbow - it is easy to use and it can be ready to loose a bolt at any time. In a defensive strategy one could have two or three men working together, with one or two focusing on reloading crossbows and the others shooting them and switching with ready ones - speed is the crossbow's biggest weakness for sure. Crossbows are the dominant ranged weapon in Roggar, with newer, heavier models used by soldiers and old ones used by hunters and militia.

With a mighty splat, the body of Caligula Neru impacted with the ground at the bottom of the Tower of the Trusted. A tragic case of self-defenestration according to the official story, only a few conspiracy theorists claiming that the urban legend Skelly O'Longbone was seen sneaking into Caligula's private chambers.
Before the body was cold a general amnesty for all rebels was announced and a new leader elected by the council. And this time everything was done according to the book for once.

Councilor Lingnu is announced the new Trusted Councilor.
While a highly qualified and respected scholar he is chiefly known for his youth and great beauty, earning him many admirers and much attention from the maidservants. Several incidents of blushing and retreating from such attention have earned him a mixed reputation. To some such behaviour is a display of weakness unfitting for a leader, for others it's a display of good conservative modesty and restraint.

He quickly gets to work, announcing that the aged Marcus Rubius will be made head of the Trusted Academy and giving the command of the Trusted Guard to the Vance Family.
Councilor Fish is allowed to peacefully retire, found not guilty of participating in the crimes of Caligula.

File: knight2.jpg (45 KB, 356x500)

We've invested in improving the equipment available to our cavalry - a large portion of it is not standing forces, but rather feudal knights and their men at arms. Better saddles, spurs, armor for the horses and the knights, appropriate shields and weaponry - all are important. Typically the knights will form up, usually in a wedge, and charge at the enemy with lances, killing some, trampling others - lances will sometimes break and the knights may switch to their secondary weapons if they wish to stay in the melee, but often they'll instead maneuver out of the fight, return to friendly forces, get new lances and do a new charge - this ensures the knights press their main advantage, their speed and weight, rather than staying bogged down in a melee.

Stockpile food and supplies for the war

Council project:

The Necromancer Slaying Agency (aka the NSA)
Our realm have repeatedly suffered from the fiendish aggression of the forces of evil.
Deadly blights, the living dead attacking us repeatedly at home and abroad, the spreading of the vile tome Necronomicon in our lands, cultists poisoning our noblemen at the grand feast to our newly crowned king. The list goes on. All by one man? A cabal? A cult? We don't know! All we know is that according to Mighty himself these legions of evil are under the leadership of a man with Roggarian blood.
This can not be allowed to go on. Thus the Tower of Law will set up a new branch dedicated solely to this issue. The Necromancer Slaying Agency.
This special branch will be solely dedicated to hunt down those who consort with evil within our nation, be they necromancers, cultists or unwitting pawns. Interrogation, imprisonment and confiscation of all heretical items await all who toy around with the dark arts.
The NSA shall have the full support of our courts and have special permission to use any means necessary to do what's needed to safeguard the souls of our people. Remember, those with nothing to hide got nothing to fear. And those who DO have something to hide are a threat to all the living within the known world.
Naturally, the NSA will not be the solely serve the Master of Law, they will both offer assistance and accept all support offered. Only by working together and can we avoid another undead terror attack upon our native soil.

Faction project:
Support council project.
The Trusted Councilor have ordered all the ressources of the Councilors to be made available to the NSA. Roggarian security is paramount.

We are beginning our great crusade

You know your own proffesional troops.
IF YOU ARE A FEUDAL FACTION
For every house you get 2 knights. For every knight you get 15 men at arms and up to 40 Bannermen(it's up to you how many Bannermen you want to send per knight). Goblins get 20 men at arms and 60 Bannermen per knight. Duchy of Nayte has 3 knights per house.

The Magical Warfare Reforms Act

Due to the various circumstances and defeats suffered in the Ezirin war it has become plainly apparent that the current state of the Roggarian Royal army is simply outdated for the current age of battle. The Duke of Gobbopolis would like to put forward an act to restructure the army and help play too Roggars strengths and combat the increasingly magical threats Roggar faces on a daily basis.

On the basis each legion consists of 5,000 men in varied types from advanced to skirmisher, the main goal of the this reform is to decrease the numbers of legions allowing for more specialized, better trained and better equipped troops.

Reports by the end of Zemis:
Roggar and Lursar advanced eastwards. An enemy army was garrisoned at Redroad Wall, which has been heavily fortified. After three assaults we breached and secured the fortress, but not at a light cost.
Another enemy army holds Kresnom against the triple assaults from the north.
The elvish corps sent to secure the desert pass was anhilated.
Zhongi forces have made a small advance into the badlands.
The only really good news have been on the southernmost front - Gajaxlani ships and Drezvaki armies have surged eastwards, claiming a few key early victories that have improved their morale.

As of Moris the 1st, the Roggarian Army stands at 125k fighting men, 25k support. Supplies are not an issue, morale is decent. Our navy is in Zhenzhuhei.

Reports for the month Moris:
Roggar and Lursar have advanced eastward. Our armies are camped west of the city of Soermos, beyond which lies the road to Ezirin. Emperor Verigal Ezgielan IV led the forces of Paitras and Anglanorse to a decisive victory near Kresnom and their own army is now camped north of Soermos, though their flanks are not fully secure - the mountain region is in enemy hands and the dwarves in the eastern mountain suffered another defeat. The desert pass is firmly held by the enemy and the Ezirni front is recieving reinforcements. In the desert the Anavarkists advanced on the Dominion's coastal colonies, taking a number of them. Drezvak suffered a defeat by land as they faced a far larger enemy force in the south. Rumors say undead legions are raised to fight on both sides on that front. Gajaxlan's fleet made some gains, their marines taking some enemy islands.
It is the 1st of Dranan. We have 120k Roggarian fighters west of Soermos and 72k centaurs spread out covering our flanks. The Emperor's army is around 130k. The dwarves can't be relied on to support us well enough this month.
What should we do? Supplies and morale are fine.

Our army finds itself facing a well-fortified and garrisoned city, Zidram - we most likely outnumber the defenders 3 to 1, but they are well dug in and the great lake allows them to recieve supplies and reinforcements from elsewhere. The only good road leading to our destination runs right in front of Zidram Castle. Ignoring the city is a risk, assaulting it as well, starving it when they have access to the lake - nigh impossible.

What should be done?

Our observation has noted that most of the remaining forces are not lizardmen. The local population is largely what it was before - orcs, half-orcs, ogres, minotaurs, humans, with lizardmen being people in administrative, military and religious positions. Around half of the non-lizardmen have accepted the Anavarkist faith by now.

The situation as of the 1st of Kovinar, 722
We have 20k Roggarian men aiding the siege on Soermos - the city will likely fall soon. The Emperor's army is on the other side of the city, also besieging and making successful raids across the countrysides.
At Zidram we have 88 000 fighting men, we've mostly resupplied on ammunition, morale is good.
The best news comes from the south, though - the elves got serious after their last defeat. With fresh forces and new leadership, they not only pushed the Rhoznaxi out of their colonies, but also pushed forward, taking the desert pass and several oases east of Aeldabad, while the navy secured the Acheri Isles. At least three Dark Dragons were killed by the High Elves this month.
On the jungle front the battles continue to be bloody for both sides with no major gains for either.

Soermos fell in the middle of the month, for the rest of it we kept slowly gaining ground and securing our lines - on the 20th of Kovinar winter begins.

The enemy holds the mountains, the volcano and has a line of supply and reinforcements between Ezirin and the southwestern pass that they still hold.
Towards the end of the month in temperate Ezirin light snows begin to fall.
The High Elves hold the main desert pass still.

The year has almost ended - what should we do?

>>

>>
>>1170727
Focus on cutting the southwest pass, isolating the enemy from their friends.
Then we'll have half our army mopping up the heretics in Ezirin while the other half goes south (in spring) to assist the elves on the frontlines.
>>
>>1170745
We still have the city of ezirin volcanic fortress l the Minotaur mountains and southwestern pass to deal with
>>
>>1170753
Indeed. That's why I suggested leaving half our grand army behind to support our paitran allies after we've cut our enemy's line of supply by securing the southwest pass.

The Dragon Commander has given the order.

The forces of the minotaur mountains kept us busy this winter - they conducted multiple raids, ambushes and even nearly succeeded in taking Rekazir at one point. They kept the Paitrans busy too, but with time to prepare, reinforce, resupply, the forces of Kragnaal made their move, taking Reichki and a large part of the lands east of Ezirin and setting up for a siege at the beginning of spring.

The more experienced fleet of Gajaxlan dealt a crushing blow to the larger Rhoznaxy navy - Water Dragons faced Dark Dragons on their preffered domain and triumphed.
The elves still hold the pass. Ezirin city is not completely cut off yet, but it's surrounded on all sides by land.

The centaurs led the way forward, ravaging the lakeside grasslands. The southwestern pass itself is still in enemy hands, but it's a valley that's bottled up with centaurs on both sides of it guarding it.
The Emperor's forces have besieged Ezirin. There's still some holdouts on the southeastern side of the Great Lake.

The High Elves are being pressured by land as a large enemy army is headed their way.
Drezvak and Gajaxlan have surged eastwards.

Centaur forces are busy keeping key roads under our control; The Emperor's forces have besieged Ezirin, so we must decide what we'll do with our own forces, which number a hundred thousand fighting men as of Domnis the 1st.

A.Send them to aid the siege of Ezirin
B.Send them to aid the High Elves

Half our forces are headed to Ezirin, the other half to the southwestern pass
By the time the first force reaches the siege camps surrounding Ezirin, the second, whose commander is Lady Vance, enters Bloodmist Valley. Bloodmist Pass leads to the Petreki mountains, from where Rhoznax is sending reinforcements. This army has 50k fighting men and 10k support troops.
Roll 3 times for Lady Vance's advance.

Easily clearing away a few small outposts, patrols and rading warbands, Vance's army approaches the pass. Scouts report an army is being assembled here, present numbers estimated to be below 40k - a jumble of orcs, ogres, dwarves and lizardmen commanding them. They are camped just north of the fortress that guards the pass.
What should be done about this? It's the 19th of Abadid, the army is about 25 miles away.

A successful surprise attack - on us, that is. They started picking off our outriders early on, blinding us of the maneuvers they were undertaking - their main army was ready for us, while smaller warbands from the area are at our flanks - the battle is of almost equal numbers on both sides, but the terrain is better known to the enemy.

The battle begins with skirmishes and light attacks, in and out. Morriter Brutus Berrulium, in charge of Vance's right flank, distinguishes himself when he pushes back a charge of orcish raiders that had been waiting to ambush us. Our left flank is taking a beating from enemy skirmishers and archers, though.

The forces now close in, a clash is coming.

With amazing speed we catch up to the enemy before they reach their fortress - Vance knows how to make her troops get a move on it and with a cavlary that is far superior to the enemy's, we crushed their army's remnants with ease! After a brief siege, on the 4th of Ezdarin the Roggarian banner was planted on the highest tower in Bloodmist Fortress. The area still has enemy stragglers, but this has been overall a great victory - Vance's army lost 6000 men by the end of it all, but had near twice as many captives.

Word of Vance's victory reaches the main army at Ezirin on the 12th - spatial networks are unreliable at a long distance at present.
The city's walls stand strong despite some initial bombardment. Ezirin is well supplied and garrisoned and is even home to a Dark Dragon, reports say.
50k Roggarians, 100k Paitrans, 50k Norse and 80k Kragnaan troops are spread out in fortified camps covering many miles.
Small bands of guerillas and raiders from enemy-held territories have been attempting to disrupt our supply lines with limited success. This siege is a massive undertaking and with so many people gathered there've been some issues that naturally come with it - disease, unrest among soldiers, even a few cases of desertion. The news of Vance's victory has lifted the spirits of our men at least.
What should be done here?

For an entire day we bombarded the enemy. Roggarian cannons and Paitran trebuchets expended massive amounts of ammunition, but still, the walls held, though cracks were beginning to show.
The dwarven King Orbun Kragnan played his card then. A hundred oxen had to pull it and it needed several hours to set up, during which all the great leaders in the army were invited to see it.
"She's a beauty, isn't she?" The dwarven King, who was personally taking part in setting the cannon up, said "This, lads, is dwarven art - the finest product of Ellstelg's great furnaces, just finished - we've had successful tests with smaller ones, but this one, ohh, you'll see those walls give way with one boom. Fourty tons of metal - Big Brana's her name, after me wife, hah! Ah, it's almost ready now."
He points to several barrels "Open those up, there's ear protection for ye. You'll need it."

The bombard is ready, blackpowder and cannonball prepared - the measurements were taken, the angle is right, wind speed and direction are taken into acount.
With the biggest grin on his face, the dwarven King shouts: "Fire!"

Rough idea of what the damage looks like

The heavy cannonball flies through the air, makes contact with the mighty walls and breaks apart the outer walls, flies over the castle grounds, crashes into the inner walls and then hits the keep, bringing the highest tower to a crash shortly thereafter. A cheer is heard among the ranks of the besieging army as the assault now begins - Sentinel Prime and 40 Warden Golems lead the way, behind them one of the largest forces ever assembled.

Our first assault was repelled. The enemy forces held fast. They have blackpowder as well, it seems - not on our level, but when employed in fairly close range effective enough that it destroyed a few Warden Golems when hit from the side. Losses in the first day of the assault have been 8k dead and 9k wounded. Our army at the start of the siege stood 280k strong, so there's plenty more where those came from.

Aimar tackled the Emperor to the ground and as the guards scrambled to defend their liege, it was Cerob, a Divatan Ranger, whose quick fingers on his crossbow took down one shadowy assassin who was just about to stick a dagger in the Emperor's back.

A week after the siege began in its earnest, on the 20th of Ezdarin, the Holy Pantheonic Empire has conquered the city of Ezirin. The Dark Dragon escaped before we could take him down, as did the commanders of the garrison who weren't killed.
Losses on our side during this siege amounted to 80k killed, with 66k still lying wounded. Enemy losses are estimated at around 70k dead and about that many captured - mostly the militia, who surrendered.

A great victory in this war, which is still far from over. We continue tomorrow.

Upon reading the reports of glory and slaughter from the frontline, Trusted Councilor Lingnu orders the last ressurces of the Councilors to be mobilized for the war-effort.

The new Trusted Deputy, Councilor Worcar, is dispatched from Trusted Defense towards the City of Ezirin.
A controverisal figure amongst the Councilors to say the least. While a hideous hunchback devoid of any academic talent he possesses great talent for magic and a good moral backbone. Only the last one meriting him a shred of respect within the order.

He is accompanied by 500 Trusted Guards, 156 militiamen and 200 camp followers.

Ah, Zenpai, almost forgot to tell everyone about what we've been up to. Some guy mentioned something about elf skeletons, but I don't know about that stuff. So, anyways, I was thinking to myself about all the killing going on, and I wanted to get in on it. Problem is, I gotta stay here, y'know?

So Chesapeake needed a tower where I could check out people dying in new and awesome ways. I guess it could be a prison or an arena or whatever, but still, death! Woo! Come check it out some time.

Your husband, Zal-epit Pashutu, took in and trained a most unusual apprentice - a centaur by the name of Terkem. By 710 he was a full-fledged smith and he himself took on an apprentice, an ogre called Grokom. Zal-epit took on a new apprentice, a goblin called Knocker Cinder-Palms, a man from a line of smiths coming out of Lueceric.
By 720 Grokom and Knocker were full-fledged smiths as well and would start taking on apprentices of their own. This may be the beginning of an order of master smiths.

You built a slightly taller than average tower in Chesapeake. A dozen builders died during the construction so it was, in a way, a tower of death. The tower itself is also a bit ugly to look at.

With Ezirin city conquered, the Anglanorse army will take care of garrisoning it for the time being. Centaur forces are taking care of pockets of resistance across the countryside.
Paitran forces will also be securing the rear, resupplying and reinforcing after the battle - about a third of each Kingdom's army was lost there and there's still many wounded.
General Vance has 46 000 troops at Bloodmist Pass, while our main army at Ezirin has 35 000 fighting men, a fifth of whom still need treatment.
The main remaining enemy holdout is the mountain and volcano region - from there the enemy launches raids into our rear and is a thorn in our side.
In the south the elves have 55 000 remaining troops guarding the desert pass - a far larger Rhoznaxi army has showed up on the other side and cut them off from Hasgaldam.

The deal with the demon is struck, he is now a Roggarian vassal. He has 20 000 fighting men in the fortress of whom half are demons. As a sign of loyalty, on the next day he gave us the head of a lizardman - the leader of the local Rhoznaxi garrison attached to his forces, who was in a way there to ensure the demon lord is doing his duty.
"Never liked this scaly fuck much. I have two thousand of his men in captivity now as well - if you want them for something I'll give them." says Count Charron of Flamkor.
And so it is, a bloodless victory on the 9th of Stomnis, 723.

The centaurs, dwarves and elves were barely holding onto the pass when reinforcements from Roggar and Paitras arrived to relieve them. The Rhoznaxi legions pulled back south into their territory.

We set up camp in the afternoon.
We are most definately not prepared for these conditions- it is the height of summer in and, for all but the elves and some dwarves in our army, it is the hottest day the soldiers have seen in their lives. Since we left the pass it doesn't protect us from the elements. Soldiers put away their weapons and armor, many are barechested and sweating.

Supplies are fine since we left friendly positions just a few days ago. It would not take more than an hour or two of marching to reach the enemy.

The sun will set in a few hours. The supporting staff is preparing supplies for dinner - a war council is planned at that time so you have three hours of free time to use as you see fit.

But something even better; a clever guy can use it to control how hot he is.

So, the sun is always making the sand on top hot, right? So if you dig down a bit, all the sand is gonna be cold as my grandmam's grave, pantheon bless her soul. And then, at night, it acts like a little hole for you to be warm in. You throw all the blankets and whatever in your hole, and it keeps the wind off your back while you sleep. Exhausted from catching up to the army, your group didn't have time to aid in medical preparations - some of them had to be put in the care of allied physicians in fact.

Roggar has brought 50 thousand fighting men for this battle. Paitras has brought 55 thousand, Lursar - 45 thousand, Kragnaal has 45 thousand and the High Elves have 50 thousand. Adding the supporting staff leads to a gathering of close to three hundred thousand people.
Leading the forces of Paitras are Emperor Verigal Ezgielan IV and Duke Jackard Tremas of Midenath. Kragnaal's forces are led by King Orbun Kragnan and Duke Erbon Noistill. King Utreg Lursarin leads his own forces, the elvish army is led by General Baelas Alinam.

Baelas, a tall, muscular and mustached elf of at least five centuries of age, greets Jackard and extends a mechanical right arm forward - "A pleasure to meet you, Duke Tremas. I fought beside your father in the last war - you were a young boy then, but he was very proud of you. My son died beside your father when shadowy assassins were sent - I would've been the one to fall that day had I not been sent back home after losing my arm"
"My uncle Fralion spoke highly of you as well, General Alinam - a pleasure to meet you as well."

Fine food and drinks are brought for all attending. Scribes bring maps of the area and scrolls with statistics are read.
"We've only got smaller cannons, but ammunition supplies are fine." says the dwarven King
"I sent my scouts out earlier - the enemy has several Dark Dragons, Anavark himself may even be there. We outnumber their troops by around sixty thousand, though." says the centaur King

"Gentlemen, we must decide on a strategy for tomorrow. We hold a numerical advantage, but the enemy is better prepared for the conditions of the region and has defenses they can fall back to as well as the backing of dragons."

"I have ninety-nine gryphon riders left in my force. A hundred if you count me." the elven general says "We could probably take a lesser dragon with ease, but Anavark is said to be the strongest living dragon in the world."
>>
>>1174696
"While devoid of talent and ability in the field of diplomacy, this humble councilor believes we should seek a solution with as little bloodshed as possible.

Failing that, engaging the enemy host head on in the field would be our best bet. Our numbers and righteous fury should be more than sufficient for their troops.
For the dragon I suggest we keep both our cannons and best mages reserved for dragonhunting, the gryphons in reserve."
>>
>>1174696
Well, we'd need to isolate the dragons whilst in combat to ensure that their support to the main army is limited. Maybe a ruse to trap them?
>>
>>1174696
"Anavark himself.....
By the gods that's the last thing we needed right now.
Perhaps if we could isolate him with the gryphons or bring him to the ground and blast at him with all the might of our cannons..but those are risky moves. the Rhoznaxi army I think we could take.

I'm going to be frank with you all I am not sure if we can win this battle."

"The Gods will it....."
"The Lizards gods are over there fighting alongside them while much of the power of our priests and Pantheonic magi has been weakening since we started this campaign."
>>
>>1174696
Taking out those dragons should be the primary goal with them dying or fleeing the Rhoznaxi morale will be crushed not to mention those beast are the most powerful beings here.

If we can use the gryphon riders to seperate the dragons from the Rhoznaxi army and push them towards certain areas on the ground
then disabling their wings so they cant fly away. We'll then have a number of troops standing by to kill them once they've been brought down to the earth.

IF you have an suggestions or criticism for this plan speak them now.
>>
>>1174858
The kill forces that will focus on the dragons can be the Knights of Mor, Sentinel Prime and other such elite units the other nations brought with them.
The Gryphon riders need to focus on bringing the dragons to the ground.
>>
>>1174858
"While it hinges on the dragons willingly being drawn away from the main battlefield, I struggle to offer a better suggestion.
We engage their army with a massive frontal assault to take them out of the equation. Then we send in the gryphons to draw the dragons into the designated killzones.
If we manage to ground them then we can hit them with Sentinel Prime, cannon fire, Knights of Mor and as much magical force we can muster.
Failing to ground them, we can still manage to drive them away with massive concentration of archery, mages and cannons.

Even if we fail to destroy the enemy host we'll still leave them so weakened that they're unable to press their advantage, resulting in them being willing to sign a peace treaty afterwards."
>>
If I may add something, my nature mages, through the use of their magic, estimated that there are between 2 and 3 Dragons in that fortress.
>>
>>1174927
I'd also suggest heavy golem.usage here, to defend against dark magic usage.
>>
Heres a proposed final plan
"We begin a massive assault on the Rhonzaxi armies.

Once the battle is underway the gryphon riders will pull the dragons away from the Rhoznaxi troops and force them to the ground where they can be slain by the elite forces the nations have brought with them. Such as Sentinel Prime the knights of Mor and any such other elite forces.

The gryphon riders will not focus on killing the dragons until we confront Anavark himself if hes here."

>>
"Very well then. Kragnaal, Roggar and Paitras will have the center. General Alinam, I entrust the right to you. King Utreg, you'll have the left. Anti-dragon forces will be kept in the rear center."

The officers dine and chat for a while then take to their tents.

On the morning we march to battle!

The battle begins in the morning - Utreg's skirmishers had the best performance on our side, harrying the enemy's right. Our center and right suffered more losses, though, with one of the first casualties of battle being Councilor Worcar, his deformed body crushed underneath a shot from an enemy trebuchet.
The enemy is fine with keeping us at a distance - we must be the ones to close the gap!

Joe Stolen and the Mook Knight were killed when out of nowhere a Dark Dragon appeared and did a strafing run on our lines, his dark magic killing hundreds, if not thousands, before escaping - our anti-dragon forces didn't manage to get to him.
The enemy was ready for the charge of our infantry - theirs were rested and stood firm while ours are already getting tired, having had to run through the battlefield wearing their heavy equipment and with the sun cooking them alive.

Lithus Andarak, the Roggarian Royal Diplomat, is sent forward to speak with the enemy. The Rhoznaxi send a single diplomat of their own.
"Greetings. I am Taaman al-Ahak, I speak on behalf of the Caliph's Grand Army. You wish to speak of peace, I presume? Perhaps an exchange of prisoners?"
>>
>>1175600
An exchange of prisoners would be good, yes. What are your demands?
>>
>>1175615
"We have sixteen thousand prisoners of war, two thirds are elves. We shall exchange them for an equivalent number of prisoners on your side."
"If you wish to wish to negotiate your withdrawl from the war, we are open to discussing that as well."
We haven't brought that large of an amount of prisoners with us south of the pass - we captured a thousand enemies during this battle, but they may have captured some of our own as well.
>>
>>1175637
"Well, I've been informed by my company that we have enough to trade in equal numbers. Of course, I've also come to negotiate your surrender. In surplus with the prisoners, we will allow you to leave with your lives, but we will confiscate any arms and foodstuffs. You will be supplied with enough to reach any enemy encampment you wish."
>>
>>1175665
"Is this the best diplomat the Empire has to offer?" the lizardman rolls his eyes
"We're not giving up this place to you. I'll give you a counter-offer. We'll exchange said prisoners, you'll leave your weapons and you'll be allowed to return north, to Ezirin. The weather's much nicer there - for you."
>>
>>1175687
You insult me with such an offer. I'll entertain only the prisoner exchange, I'm sure you'll need all the men possible.
>>
A deal was made to exchange a thousand prisoners on each side, as that's all we have with us.
600 elves and 400 dwarves are returned to our side - they have no equipment and are not in a very good fighting condition - like all prisoners of war who've been in captivity for long, they're not exactly fed as well as a soldier would be.
Of the 42 thousand wounded soldiers in our ranks 10 000 died, 2000 were cripped and 8000 are able to join the fight today. The conditions here didn't exactly help, but the rest who are wounded will probablby survive.
We march our 183k able-bodied men out. The enemy numbers around 125k by our estimates.
Skirmish phase now!

The two Sentinel Primes duke it out in the middle of the battlefield, their clash shaking the earth. V3 is armed with a sword and shield while V2 wields a large hammer - a blunt weapon, its purpose to punch through armor - this golem was made for this fight. V3 is larger, better armored, faster, with better enchantments - even though V2 was made for this fight, he stands little chance to actually win it.
The Dark Dragon, meanwhile is maneuvering around, fighting the Knights of Mor and Gryphons.

Tamaan al-Ahak sits on a chair, observing the battle. He and the chair are floating a thousand feet above the battlefield. He gets up and makes several steps forward, his feet touching nothing.

While the lesser dragon is fighting the gryphons on equal "ground", Anavark is decimating our lines. After his initial flame attack he followed up with Dark Magic, casting a suffocating shroud over a large portion of our forces in the center, not only killing many, but also disrupting communications.

After cutting off V2's head, Sentinel Prime V3 was directed to fall back with the army. His Warden Golems flanking him, he would escort our forces to safety - when the lesser Dark Dragon tried to strafe us later he got too cocky and got too close to the ground - Sentinel Prime stuck his sword through the dragon's chest, killing him. Anavark laid off on the pursuit after that.

We reached the Pass with our surviving forces - a hundred thousand men, more than half of whom were wounded, some crippled. We had to abandon most of our heavy siege equipment and some of our supplies, the army is in dire shape and morale is low, but at least we're on friendly soil...for now.

Okay, now... Grand army marching south on some oasis. Worcar dying in the first clash, what was that foolish cripple doing near the frontline in the first place? Dragon deployed, Centurion deployed, another dragon, Knights of Mor deployed, Anavark himself joining.... By all the gods.”
“Is it bad my lord?”
“Nothing that can't be salvaged I hope. But with Claudette stuck sitting pretty in some pass and Worcar smashed to pulp I'll need some new eyes on the front. Tell Einar Svenson to pack his bags, he's the new deputy now.”
“Another mage my lord?”
“He's a first class intellect, very well educated in both warfare and diplomacy and is a rampant advocate for tolerance. The latter quite relevant for dealing with the issue of our new vassal at Flamkor.”
“He's also a coward.”
“True, but we can't have everything can we? Now go dig up some money in the treasury so that we can hire some mercenaries to accompany him, a few hundred horsemen to keep him safe down there in the meatgrinder.”

I'd like to make a late faction and council roll before the action picks back up.
From 700 to 720, the Silverhands worked on the development of an anti-golem weapon, seeing as their increased use in warfare has caused some stir.
Further, as Royal Magician, I will support a project to develop a kind of diving golem, a golem that allows for at least one passenger to traverse the deep sea relatively unmolested by the tremendous pressure there.

You figured out that golems are hard to destroy with a blade, so it's better to use blunt force against them.
You used the old underwater mining golem designs to create an experimental model that would survive the higher pressure of the sea's floor. Thankfully there was no one inside, as the construct was crippled by pressure, but you're making some notes of how to improve the design through trial and error.

It is the 10th of Jurias, 723. Allied forces hold all of Ezirin with the exception of the minotaur mountains.
Survivors of the Battle of Darkpass(cripples not included):
18k Roggarians(40% wounded)
20k Paitrans(37% wounded)
22k Elves(42% wounded)
9k Kragnans(25% wounded)
16k Lursari(33% wounded)
Across the rest of Ezirin:
Roggar has 50k troops at Bloodmist Pass, of whom one fourth are Bannermen. At Rekazir we have 40k troops, almost all Bannermen - we keep at least 25k there to protect the area at all times. The current pace of reinforcement is around 10k Bannermen a month arriving via the Longfork.
Anglanorse has 35k men in Ezirin city
Kragnaal has 15k in Reichki
Paitras has 45k in various garrisons
Lursar has 30k patrolling the roads

Most of the siege equipment we sent south of the pass was lost, more has been requisitioned. Local food stockpiles in Ezirin are rather low, the population is discontent, but kept in check by military presence. Morale among the troops who survived the last battle is somewhat low, elsewhere it's of acceptable levels.
What should we do?

I suggest having our main army rest and reorganize in our safe area in Ezirin while we bring in reinforcements and supplies.
Meanwhile the army at Bloodmist pass will launch a diversionary attack into the mountains, forcing our enemy to divert troops from other areas and showing our allies that we're committed to the cause.
This attack will however be a glorified raid, seeking to win some engagement and bring back whatever loot can be found. If the offensive stall or encounter heavy resistance we'll pull back, avoiding needless casualties.
Now, I am aware that some naysayers believe Anavark himself would rush over to counter us the moment we made a move. But if that came to pass that would mean the enemy's strongest weapon not being used at other fronts, earning our allies some respite. Furthermore, if he's as unstoppable as some of you claim then there's nothing stopping him from coming for our weaker targets, like the bloodied remains of our main army.
I am willing to lead this attack myself, including facing the consequences should it fail.

Then, when our main army is back up to strength and rested we'll rejoin the war properly. Where to deploy them will be dealt with when that time comes as the situation in the future cannot be predicted. However, I believe the elven front will still be a suitable theatre.

Regarding the issue of prisoners, we should release all the ezirini militiamen we've captured to gain some goodwill with the population. Also, that way we won't have to feed 50 thousand idle hands.
The Rhoznaxi captives should be used for prisoner exchanges pronto. If nothing else it will buy us some time."

On the second day we were ambushed, arrows and bolts rained from above into the canyon through which we are moving. Charakavin, who had just reached the army, was wounded, taking a bolt in his left thigh, while an arrow killed his horse. Losses weren't too terrible overall, we adjusted our scouting and perimeter watch.
The canyon road splits - to the left the road leads ino a semi-opened cave system, scouts did not spot any inhabitants other than some animals. To the right the road leads down into a river valley.

We had reached the crossroads on the 15th, camped for the night, then split up.
We sent a dozen scouts to the left, - around midnight, eleven returned. They did not find any people there, but they were attacked by animals and the road passed over a cliff, one of the scouts fell down and died. They encountered various dangerous beasts - scorpions, snakes and hyenas they could take care of fairly easily, though two of them were wounded by those. Three of the scouts were attacked and wounded by something else, though - they describe a creature that could walk on two or four legs, had a mostly humanoid build, but had a face like a hyena and sharp claws.

This report is given in person to Lithus Andarak and Charakavin, who are in charge of the camp at the crossroads. Interestingly, upon inspection it turned out that the bolt that struck Charakavin stuck into his armor, but he himself had suffered no wounds. After resting for a bit he got up and made some practice swings with his bloodsteel sword. He had never felt better in his life and he is now close to his home mountains as well.

No report has come of Vance's army, which went into the valley. What should the camp do?

Vance, leading 42 000 men, entered the river valley around noon - the area closest to the crossroads was uninhabited, save for some animals that were of no threat to such a force. As the army is replenishing water supplies, scouts are sent forward. They return when the sun is setting, reporting that further ahead there is an orcish stronghold holding the valley. The banners of Rhoznax fly above it and it seemed well garrisoned. The scouts were spotted and had to retreat.
Shortly afterwards the report from the crossroads camp arrives. It's a cool night in the valley, rather pleasant weather at the moment.

We brought some ligh cannons with us - it took some time to set them up and begin bombardment, but they got the job done and made a breach in the walls as our forces charged forwards. The green orcs(whose skin has taken on a somewhat more reddish tone from generations spent in this climate) had time to prepare, though - they are waiting for us, having formed a phalanx. Their numbers are inferior, but on this chokepoint it does not matter so much.

The orcs talked among themselves. Twenty five of them left the formation - younger orcs who still have a long live ahead of them and families who want to see them. They surrender themselves and their arms. The remaining 75, all of them older, more experienced orcs, fix the gaps in the phalanx and hold.
Understanding their intentions, Vance sends her Trusted Guard forward. The orcs pull off a hell of a fight - for every one of them that falls one or two of our own die as well. These orcs were content with their deaths.

The fort is now ours. We lost two thousand men, another four thousand are wounded. The garrison numbered eighteen hundred orcs. Further ahead the canyon gives way to a wider valley, home to these orcs.

What should be done? It's the evening of the 17th of Jurias.

The enemy number closer to 40 000 and they aren't pushovers. Knowing this area better, they deploy skirmishers and archers to harras us, provoking the cavalry on our left to charge - their archers pulled back in itme and our knights instead rode into a phalanx that was waiting for them and drove them back. Orcish cavalry struck our own left flank which had been exposed at that same time - though not a large force, those wolf-riders cut through a regiment of archers before pulling out.
Their center now approaches - though they did well at range, they want to get into the thick of it as well, it seems!

The two armies meet head-on! Vance orders our men to charge, but they meet their match. The orcish force is well formed - first ranks have shields, second ranks have large axes, while the third and fourth rank have pikes. Behind them archers shoot bows and javelinmen throw spears. When a gap in the orcish line is made - either by us breaking through or them intentionally moving to the sides - berserkers charge through, cutting into our lines. Our charge not only stopped dead in its tracks, but is now also being pushed back.

Vance leads the charge of the Wolf Brigade in the center with great success, tearing into the enemy, but she finds herself surrounded. Our cavalry is making some hits on the enemy's sides, but the core of our army is being hit hard, our lines are starting to break.
Vance is cut off from the rest of our army. Orcs surround the Wolf Brigade. In one place their ranks split and a powerful-looking orc with a large axe walks forward, exuding an aura of authority and strength.
"I appaud your daring, woman, but this is the end for you. You showed mercy to our people, so if you surrender now I'll show mercy to you - if not..." he extends his arm, pointing with the axe towards General Vance.

(No rolls until the duel is resolved)

The orc grunts and grasps his axe with both hands.
"When you go into the Dark, know that it is Karfog, chieftain of the Skullsplitter clan, who sent you!" With a warcry he charges forward!
>>
Rolled 55 (1d97)

Extending her sword forward, Vance launches a lightning bolt from its tip when her enemy is two meters in front of her - the bolt hits him in the chest and shocks him, forcing him down to a knee. His will is not bent, though - he attempts to get up.
>>
Rolled 45 (1d100)

"Stay down orc, I do not desire you dead."
Seeing as the orc is resolved upon continuing the fight, Claudette once more points her blade towards her foe and utter the command word.
"Thunderclap strike!"
>>
Rolled 43 (1d100)

While Vance is wasting time talking, Karfog gets up and charges forward, swerving to the right to avoid the bolt, then getting right up in his enemy's face. He uses his axe haft like a lever to block the sword that is on his left and then with his right elbow hits Vance in the face. From there he goes in for another strike

>>1180129
Staggering from the blow, Vance rapidly attempts to regain her balance and introduce the point of her sword to her enemy's chest

Rolled 68 (1d100)

It seems the orc enjoys this brutal way of fighting - he sticks the end of his haft between Vance's arms, clinches her tightly, her sword sticking out to the side of him, as he now starts kicking her in the groin with his right knee, laughing maniacally.

>>
Rolled 83 (1d100)

The orc's face is exposed and Vance headbutts him, hitting him with the weird metal headwear she has, pushing him back and causing him to stagger. She goes in for an overhead strike, which the orc just barely blocks, but the blade slips to the side and grazes his left arm, a weak shock going through him. He tries to make a counterattack now.
>>
Rolled 64 (1d100)

>>1180197
With no regard for her own safety, Vance goes straight for the counterstrike, trusting her armor to keep her safe.
>>
Rolled 32 (1d100)

Vance swings towards the orc's right shoulder - he steps in, letting the sword slide down his axe and hitting the axehead from below, while he uses the pommel on the end of his haft to strike Vance in the head again, swelling her right eye up and causing her to get staggered, her head spinning
"You fight well! Maybe I should stop hitting you in the face, I may claim you as my wife after this, hah!" the orc bellows
>>
Rolled 81 (1d92)

>>1180220
Vance uses the brief break granted by the orc babbling away to catch her breath before pointing the tip of her weapon towards the fiend.
"My turn, Thunderclap strike!"

The sword thrust goes into the place where the previous two hits had gone, the orc's right side which by now has opened up in a gaping wound - the sword strikes nothing, effectively. Vance attempts to activate the remaining lightning in a burst, but she's not fast enough - the orc hits her with the sharp end of his axe for the first time, the metal biting into her head and cracking her skull, ending the life of the great General Claudette Vance. Her corpse falls to the ground and the axe is swung again, separating the head from the body. The orcish chieftain mounts it on a pike and hands it over to a soldier, then falls to the ground, breathing heavily. He is taken away to be treated as the rest of the orcs attack the Wolf Brigade, while the battle elsewhere also continues.

The Wolf's Brigade, seeing that our army is in retreat and that there are undead on the battlefield, chose to stand their ground and sacrifice their lives so that others may escape.
The undead stay to buy time as well. The chain of command in the army is broken and we beat a not-so-orderly retreat back to the fort.
The Wolf's Brigade and General Claudette fell at the Battle of Vance's Folly on Jurias the 18th. Of her 35 000 soldiers, 21 000 made it back to the fort. Thousands were probably captured and of those who made it a third are wounded, joining the other wounded soldiers who had stayed there - the physicians are now overburdened and the situation turned dark rather quickly. Second in command to General Vance was Morriter Brutus Berrulium, but tensions are high back at the fort now as many soldiers refuse to follow the orders of a necromancer.

You recognize wolves, horses, bovines, sheep and other animals that would be more suited for a land that is more temperate. Outside what you'd find are hyenas, scorpions, sparse vegetation, while in one part of the paintings a depiction of what must be a forest is found. The only thing in common that the paintings have with the nature outside is some predatory bird, most likely a falcon or hawk.
The paintings appear to have a progression. The first painting depicts piles of skulls on a surface, while clouds loom over them and bolts of lightning rain down on them. The ones closest to where we came in from are the most refined, showin figures wearing clothes, in one place showing them moving stones, while in another what is most likely them operating a forge. As we move forward the paintings become cruder, as does the livelyhood of the people depicted. Somewhere around the middle of the whole procession there is a turning point - the paintings on the right of it are the cruder ones, the ones on the left of it are the more refined. The chronology, therefore, can be determined to be from right to left. The said painting that is in the middle shows a number of figures in the lower part with their hands raised, while higher above them a larger figure also has a hand raised, a depiction of a sword pointing upwards.

We continue forward, entering a grotto with more signs of former habitats - rubble and remains of stone walls of varying quality.

The cliff continues to the right and it keeps to the walls of the mountain - you see cliff dwellings carved into the mountain, dozens, maybe hundreds of them, of varying age and quality. The area forms a semicircle, beginning from where we are, going to the right, sticking to the walls that eventually lead to an end roughly opposite our current position - there you see a larger structure carved higher up into the rocks, stairs leading down towards the cliff path. You notice that there are some steep stairs that lead from the cliff path down, into the gorge.
>>1181321
You find no monsters bigger than a scorpion or snake.
>>1181320
>>1181350
You find some skeletal remains in the ruins of a crude dwelling. They are of varying sizes, the biggest being five foot and five inches tall. None of you are students of medicine or archeology so that's about all you can tell from looking at bones.
>>
>>1181459
I should go check out the larger structure carved into the rocks.
>>
>>1181532
"Very well, we came here to find out whats in this place, so we may as well enter the ruins."
>>
>>1181459
Let'ss move along into the cliff dwellings. Tread carefully, and lets make to the larger structure, explore it and find more clues about this civilization.

Anyone who's got a bag or sack big enough, try and stuff some bones, especially skulls into it, so we can have qualified eyes examine them when we get out.
>>
>>1181532
"I'll go with ye Lord Charakavin."
>>
We move along the cliff path. Observing some of the dwellings you see chunks of crude pottery, works of stone and plenty of bones. Charakavin picks up a skull he finds on the ground and sees that an arrowhead is lodged in it, an arrowhead made of copper. He accidentaly kicks a rock that falls down to a lower level, hitting something and making a crashing noise - probably some pot. Moving forward you see something more unusual - smoke rising from one of the windows of the distant structure.
>>
"everyone on guard!"
>>
>>1181597
"Where there's smoke there might be a fire. Let's go check it out. Though we might need to be wary. Noise could draw more of those beasts we say back there."

Head to the smoke and stay on guard.
>>
>>1181597
Draw your weapons and move carefully towards the structure, men. No more noises.

Smoke means fire, and fire means company. Let's see who else is here.
>>
>>1181597
Lets investigate the fire, I suggest you all be on guard.

As you approach you can hear a voice muttering out loud some words you can't quite comprehend.
You enter the structure and find yourself in a large room. Some crude furniture is arrayed in the far side, while closer to you there is a campfire, a skewer with some raw meat on it. A man is standing there, a stone knife in his hand, crude clothes on his back, ragged hair and a large beard on his face. He looks to be human, his figure is slouched, but he doesn't look weak.
He's looking at you, sizing you up, slowly moving towards the furniture. Near the fire his hair looked like it's dark brown, but as he is backing away it starts to look closer to black.
>>
"take it easy, we dont want any issues now do we?"

"Lower yer weapons men we dont want to put this guy on edge now do we."

Relax.
It's just a hermit.
"Greeting. Who are you? and why the hell are you down here?"

If anyone knows a southern dialect, now is the chance to try it.

Everyone try to speak to him, find a language we can work with. Keep your weapons lowered, but don't set them down.
>>
As he hears our language you hear a faint growl.
He opens his mouth and spits something out. His lipse are somewhat dry, his voice sounds tired. He speaks to us in Paitran, with a bit of a southern accent.
"What are you doing here? Come to kill this old man? I won't surrender mysellf to capture or death easily! Why have you come?!"
>>
"calm yourself, we would have killed you if we wanted to already so no we do not want to kill you"
>>
>>1181790
"We've come because we found a strange cave filled with werebeasts. We did not know you or anyone else besides the beast was in here. What happened to this place? Do you know it's history?"
>>
>>1181790
I don't speak Paitran, someone translate for me!

We mean you no harm, hermit. We simply came exploring these ruins. What do you know of this place, and what are YOU doing here? We are from Roggar, with the army invading this region. We are simple scouts.
>>
>>1181790
"Ehh I think this guy ere's speakin Paitran. Anyone know it?"
>>
"not to my knowledge"
>>
"Roggar, eh. Invading, same as always. This is my home. I came back after so long but it's still the same. Put away your weapons and maybe I'll treat you to some food. I have hyena roast, sprinkle some herbs on it and it's good."
>>

"Hyena? I think I'll skip out on that. I'm not really feeling it."
Put away my weapon anyways though.

I'm not above sharing a fire with a stranger. Thank you for your hospitality, sir. Of course, what's mine is yours as well. I can't imagine you get much cheese out here, so you're welcome to my own rations.

If I might ask, how old are you? Were you born here?
>>
You sit down around the fire. He gives the skewer a few twists, sprinkles the meat with some heres then leaves it to roast for a bit more.
"What's Roggar doing here then? There's nothing but old stones and one old man left of this village."
>>
"were Hyenas"
>>

"Can somone translate this."
"What do you know of this village."

We're fighting a war against the Rhoznax Empire, and we're in the middle of a retreat, as we so often are. We came across a suspicious cave and are the survivors of the expedition sent to explore it. When did this village die, and how long ago was it?

Please try to keep up Charakavin, I know it must be hard.

"I see. You speak of Werehyenas - were any of you bitten?" Just by looking at you he can see that there are such cases
"Must not have been long ago. I can give you a solution. The taint has most likely not yet spread - show me where you are bitten. If you want it, I will cut off the point from which it is safe to cut. It will be painful, but I have some cloth to tie you up and you probably have spare things on hand as well. I have some healing herbs too, it'll help with the wound and ease your pain a bit. This is if you want to keep yourself from becoming a beast. I have seen it happen many times and it is not a fate to look forward to. The dark elves of Aeldabad know a way to "tame" the beast, they'll tell you, but it is a lie - it is the beast that tames you. I have seen men who take that path - though they know how to wield the power, they become bloodthirsty fiends by nature, regardless of the strength of their will. It is a trade that only the wicked take."
>>
>>1182033
>Step forward.
"Got a wife at home and a child on the way. I can't lose myself. Not here. Not now."

"Ya know while you cut me apart mind telling me about this civilization. I saw some wall paintings a bit back. This place seems to have been something interesting."

He makes cuts of the meat with his knife and hands them to those who wants some, while you hand out cheese.
>>1182122
"This is going to hurt, so first you should take some of this"
He produces some...smokeweed? Yes, it's smokeweed or something like it at least.
"You won't feel quite so much pain."

"My people, humans like most of you, lived in this land many, many years ago...how long has it been now - six or seven, maybe eight centuries? The Storm was the end of this tribe, all but myself died and I was cursed to roam the world, living forever. At some times I thought it was a blessing, I felt great strength and great power, but now I just feel old and tired."

"I was the chieftain of this tribe, you see. In those days this land was not so desolate. Our people were growing in number and learning the ways of civilization, but then came the Storm. The war of titans, dragons, gods and empires was waged across the world, but these lands were more harshly affected. Thousands died of famine or disease, the rest were claimed by war. I was not here to protect my people when I was most needed and I was left alone."

As Charakavin is now high on the drug, he is laid on a flat surface. From a hidden place among the furniture the hermit brings out a sword of magnificent quality. Carefully he measures his strike and with a single swing he cuts off the dwarf's left arm above the elbow. Even with the drug Charakavin screams and then passes out.
"Bring me what cloth you have, we need to bandage him. Fire first."
>>
>>1182199
"Say...have you ever heard of a guy named Rog perhaps?"
>>
>>1182199
If what you say is true then you must be over 700 years old. How is that possible? You don't look like a demon to me.
>>
>>1182199
I make out what I can of his Paitran and give him my spare shirt.

I do my best to speak Paitran, though my knowledge of the language is shaky at best.

"Do you know who cursed you? Our nation was founded by one who sounds similar to you, his name was Rog. He was our chief, and we lost him in the Storm. Do you think you could be like him? Or the one they call The Mighty?"
>>
"Rog...now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time" he says as he looks at his sword before sheathing it in a fine scabbard and putting it away.

"My memory is not quite what it used to be. This special herb I had, it was the last in my supply and it was of the pain-dulling kind. I had another sort that helps with rememembering, but I'm all out. I believe you call it swampweed - does anyone have any?"
>>
>>1182266
*Hearing the mention of needing swampweed Zhihao reenters the hut*

After he takes off his pack and rooting around a bit he takes out a blunt and offers him it. "I'm not quite sure how this'll help but here it is."
>>
>>1182266
''I think I got some right here. Its the last one i got on me.''
Gives him the swampweed.
>>
>>1182266
Just hotbox this shack.

"Please do your best to remember, sir. If you know something about Rog, this could change the entire objectives of our kingdom."
>>
>>1182301
>>1182310
"Thank you"
He smokes in silence for about half a minute
"Where was I? Yes, swampweed helps you remember when you get to my age.
He stays silent for a bit, only smoking.
>>1182218
"I do not know who made us. It feels as though I was born with a purpose, a deeper understanding of the world and an ability to affect it. The earliest memory I have is of meeting the people who lived here - a crude people that huddled in caves and hunted with stone spears and knives. There were several clans in the area and I united them, I taught them many things, including to praise the Elements. The shamans would say I could hear Their voices, but did I really? I do not know. It was this way for...how long? Maybe a few decades. Not enough, the end days had come. I went to fight in someone's army. I killed elves, I killed giants, I killed dwarves and lizards, ogres and centaurs, minotaurs and orcs, goblins and demons. I do not know how many - to live was to kill, to kill was to live."
He smokes again
>>
>>1182358
"Us", are there more people like you on this continent? Did they also fight in the Storm?
>>
>>1182358
What do you know of the pantheon?
>>
>>1182358
"By the Pantheon you've certainly been through a lot."
>>
"Now that I think about it, I think I fought alongside some Titan. I think he was of Fire's sons. During one battle he incinerated the neighbouring village my tribe dwelled in because lizards had hidden there." he sighs
"I wasn't the only one of my kind. I crossed swords with at least one other like myself. Second-best fight in my life. Or was it the best? Ah, both of us got away alive when some Earth Titan decided there weren't enough mountains there so he made a new one."

"The dragons weren't too kind on us either. One of them, he was either dark or storm, attacked this village. I was here to drive him away the first time, but not the second. What you see here is what I found then. "

"After that, I stopped fighting. I just killed. I was like a beast, time, place and name meant nothing. I found myself in some desert eventually when it was all over. The skies were clear again, the fighting was over. How long did it last? Maybe years, it started before I was called to fight."
"The beast became a man again in time, but that man has grown old. Not weak, not yet. Perhaps I am finally dying."
>>
>>1182432
I try again in my spotty Paitran

"Sir,if what you say is true, then you are incredibly valuable to any human nation! I realize that you are tired, but your knowledge could change everything we know about the world! Is there any chance you would be willing to let us attempt to take you back to Roggar, where your knowledge could be recorded and spread?"
>>
>>1182429
"The Pantheon?" he starts smoking the second blunt
"Ah, they won the whole thing. All the others croaked, while they took the spoils. Granted, they had to start from scratch, but look at them now - who's left to oppose them?"
>>
>>1182450
"Oi Milo the ole mans been through a lot. i know you got lots fancy ideas but i think he just wants to live in peace.''
>>
"peace in a time like now, HA!"

>Groans and tries to wake up.
>>
>>1182461
"But think of what he could do! If he's right, then the Pantheon has based their faith almost entirely on lies! How can you ignore that!

If he won't join us, we need to make sure we make it out of here alive with his story!"
>>
>>1182432
Do you remember the sides of the war? Who fought who and why they fought?
>>
>>1182455

He drops his blunt accidentally
"Speaking of messes."
>>
>>1182511
"I probably can't remember what I ate for breakfast myself."
"Thank for you helping us is there anything we could do to help you out before we go?"

"Sir, please consider my offer. If you come with us and we make it out of this damned gorge, I can assure you that you'll be taken care of. He looks over his few belongings and puts on a belt. He hangs his scabbard on one side and two pouches on the other. Rummaging around he finds one rusty greave that he puts on his left leg. He puts out the fire, eats the last of the meat, drinks from a waterskin and then goes up to Charakavin.

The road back to camp is somewhat uneventful. You saw the lycantropes eyeing you from up on the cliffs, but they did not dare attack.
Reaching the camp, Lithus is given for emergency medical treatment over to one of the best physicians available, he had just passed out.
It's evening, we'll sleep here and move out before the sun has even risen. Reports of the encounter are shared with the other commanders and dinner is served, but the peace and comfyness is broken by screaming. Lycantropes attack the perimeter, coming in the dozens, nay, the hundreds! We fight to fend them off, but as if that were not enough a kind of smog begins to form within one portion of the camp - soldiers there begin to choke and fall. Casting magical lights into the sky, mages spot a Dark Dragon flying above us
The hermit is still eating his soup, when he hears the orders being thrown around:
"Dragon attack!" "Is it Anavark?!" "To your stations, men!"
He drops his bowl and goes for his sword.

The men are taking their posts and begin shooting into the sky, while melee forces guard the perimeter. After the element of surprise has passed, the lycantropes are little more than a distraction, but they're occupying much of our forces.

The arrows and spells seem like they have no affect, like they're just passing through the dragon.

The Hermit has drawn his sword
"He's coming"
You(the characters) are all gathered around him, weapons at the ready. From the shadow a form appears. A man, clad in black armor from head to toe, he is like terror personified. He wields a large, red sword as he makes steps towards you, his black cloak fluttering behind him.

The two swords meet in a clash that breaks the shroud surrounding us. Leodinson is also slowly waking up, the clash caused a shock and sound wave that alerted him, even Lithus, who is lying in the infirmary, wakes up.
A dozen soldiers charge Anavark. Rather than using magic, he shows off his impressive sword skills by dispatching of each of them one by one without letting a single blow hit him.

The Hermit looks uncertain. He is sweating profusely, breathing heavily. That hit took a lot out of him, it seems. When he hears that others are telling him to escape, he begins backing away, trying to get to a horse.

Mooks attack by the hundreds and die by the hundreds. When he starts running out of patience, Anavark starts choking them to death or burning them with firestorms.

Amidst the chaos you managed to get in close enough to land hits on his shadowy armor. You did not harm him, but when he turned to you he lifted you up in the air with his telekinesis and started clapping.
"You'll see them soon. Welcome to the Dark." he says as he puts you to sleep

(Rolled a 100 in discord) You manage to take Lithus with you on a horse and escape alongside Zhihao, Charakavin and the Hermit.
About two dozen other soldiers on horses manage to escape from the Valley of Death as well and reach Bloodmist Pass to tell of what transpired. All others, except Leodinson and Keres, were killed or taken as captives to be used for ransom.

These events occured on the night of the 21st-22nd of Jurias, 723. By the 23rd the survivors made it to Bloodmist Fort, commanded by Mill of the Dragon Guard and held by fifteen thousand men. There they were given the best quarters to be treated by physicians.

Before dawn on the 24th, the Hermit hat gotten up. He'd gotten some tools together.
"Charakavin, Zhihao, come and help me shave. I'm getting rid of this beard."

Uh, I dont think a man such as yourself would require aid for such a task but I suppose I can help.

A look of sadness come across Mill's face.
"So, I'll never get to have that drink with Lady Vance, eh?"
A moment of silence, then...
"...so, your all that remains of the expeditionary force that left? And you claim that Anavark was there? A most pressing matter indeed. I shall send a raven telling of our plight and requesting more troops to secure Bloodmist. In the mean time, I'll have a talk with this Hermit, whose life is worth that of a couple thousand men and the attention of the Dragon Anavark himself. I'm sure he has quite the tale."

"Thank you"
Charakavin holds up a mirror with his right hand, while Zhihao helps with water, razor and scissors. It takes a while to get rid of this large beard. The Hermit is doing only some occasional small talk and guiding the barber's hand, avoiding the question he is asked.
When, half an hour later, the procedure is done, the man gets up from his chair.
He stops slouching and stands up straight, revealing a figure over six feet tall. Removing his torn old shirt he puts on a clean tunic, showing a body that has almost no fat on it - a body that was once far stronger, but even now would be the envy of most humans.
The Hermit puts on his greave and his belt, the sword and pouches hanging off it, all the belongings he has.
"Come, let's get some fresh air" he says. The three men walk outside into the courtyard of the fortress, the first rays of light showing from the east. The man, who looks somewhat younger and livelier now, walks towards the stables. He finds the horse he had ridden to safety, pets it, gives him an apple he had in a pouch and saddles him.
"Where are you going? You still haven't told us your name." Zhihao asks.
"Basil. That is what I'll be, at least until I am worthy of calling myself "The Mighty" again. You were good to me and I will not forget it, but I have much to do now - thank you for al your help and may the coming battles bring you glory!" He says before spurring the horse onwards, riding through the northern gate before any of the guards can stop him.

The Vance Estate, Freehold, a few weeks in the future:

“My lord, a letter for you.”
“Probably another budget meeting in Trusted Defense. Very well, let me see it.” Jarreck Vance casually breaks the seal and unfurls the scroll, reading it with half-hearted interest.
After a few lines his face hold no color but that of ash, he stumbles over to the closest chair and collapses, letter falling to the ground. Elina, his youngest daughter, does not fail to notice this unusual behaviour.
“What is it father?”
“It... it is nothing of interest. Just... nothing... to... Does not concern you.”
“It is from big sister Claudette, is it not? What is she writing? Is the war going badly?”
“I said it was nothing!”
“... Father, why are you crying?”
“I'm not.... It's just raining...”
“Father, we're inside.”
“Then the roof is leaking! Just stop bothering me you foolish child!”
