It is the Year of Our Lord 1120. You are Victor Reis, a Knight-Captain of the Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Frankfurt (The Teutonic Order.) You had come to the Holy Land after a request for aid from your brothers in the newly-formed Templar order, and traveled with them to a mountain pass Northeast of Acre, and joining a Saracen horde in battle there, suddenly found yourself in another world, along with your Teuton brothers and Templar allies.

Previously, on Fantasy Crusader Quest....

After reaching a village, you were interrupted during a talk with the village elder by a Nuckleavee, who announced that a 'Wilde Jaege', or 'Wild Hunt' had been called by Wod.

Standing in the village center, stunned, you can do nothing but watch the horrific skinless beast as it walks back into the forest. Shivering, you look at your men, who stare, agape. Is it just you, or is it suddenly colder out?

All at once, the world explodes into motion, your knights talking among themselves in loud, frantic German, trying to keep their horses under control. You see a woman faint. Children start crying. The men of the village start yelling at you in Latin, blaming you for this.

The sounds of everyone screaming at once, the sounds of over a hundred human voices, all trying to be heard over the other, grates on you. You're terrified, and now incredibly frustrated as well.

"CAN WE PLEASE SHUT. THE FUCK. UP." You say this twice, for good measure, shocking poor Father MacAodhagain twice.

In Latin: "Go to your homes. I will figure out what to do, shortly," and in German, "Settle down and stand guard. I will form a plan soon."

Sheathing your sword, you turn to Agustus, the elder, and say, "Well? Do you have any suggestions?"

Nodding, the old man points to the pagan sign above his door. "We could always protect the town in the Old Ways. I remember most of them, and we have most everything needed on hand."

What do you do?

I've got a bad feeling that bringing Cellica is going to make the village blame HER. Or the elves. Or us for bringing her.
Ah well, never leave friends out in the cold when winter comes. Or waifus, for that matter.

Looking at Augustus, you ask, "Do you have any paints, or sheep we can slaughter, elder? I'd like to mark the homes with the symbol of my god."

Shrugging, the old man takes a puff from his pipe.

"Yeah, Cuissus' got a flock. I'll have him send some to yer men. They're a bit wiry, but what do you expect from a flock in a forest?"

Nodding, you thank him, and he looks at your men, contemplative.

"That language they're speakin'... I ain't ever heard it. What's it called?"

You oblige him, saying, "It's German. If you need to ask or tell the men anything, just talk to the brown-robed man there," you point out Father MacAodhagain, "he knows your language."

Another puff of smoke. "Thank ye. Well, I'm off to the sheepherder's."

Augustus leaves, trailing smoke, as you mount Gunnar, and you ride off to the other side of the village, where Cellica will be. Hopefully, you she can hear you if you call out.

Riding along the path, you yell the ginger's name. Luckily, it takes but five minutes of riding to find her, walking out of the brush, leading her horse.

Seeing you, she smiles. "Ah, Victor! Is it time to go yet?"

Shaking your head, you say, "No, Cellica. We have to go back to the village. Something bad has happened."

Looking slightly uneasy at the prospects of actually going to the village, she nods, nonetheless. "Al-alright. If you say so. Tell me what's wrong on the way there."

And so you do.

---------------------

".....And that's why I need you there at the village with me. Can't have you out in the woods, by yourself, and if you left to get help, they wouldn't arrive in time."

Cellica nods, and says, with a nervous, yet determined look on her face, "I-I'm not the best archer, but.... you can count on me to help you fight!"

"Thank you." You look down at the road ahead of you, sense of dread increasing with every step that Gunnar takes.

"Cellica.... before we get to the village, I want to do something. If you go on ahead, or stay with me, it doesn't matter, but I need to do this."

She looks at you, confused. "I'll stay with you. I... don't feel comfortable heading into the village by myself."

"Thank you."

Letting go of Gunnar's reins, you clasp your hands together, and bow your head.

And then you pray.

"Dear God, give me courage,
for perhaps I lack it more than anything else.

I need courage to fight against evil,
against terrors and troubles, temptations,
attractions, darkness and false lights,
against tears, depression, and above all fear.

I need Your help, dear God.

Strengthen me with Your love and Your grace.

Console me with Your blessed Presence
and grant me the courage to persevere
until I am with You forever in heaven."

The prayer comes out haltingly, at first, but then the words come spilling forth. Looking up, you feel better, more solid, unwavering.

"Alright, Cellica, let's go. I'm ready."

You both ride forward, towards the village. How easy would it have been to run away? To ride, and never look back? Easier than running headlong into the jaws of death, as you are. You have a duty, however. Your duty to your men, your duty to the village, and your duty to god. They all keep you here.

And you wouldn't have it any other way.

--------------------

As you enter the square, the villagers that are up and about stare at you. What are they looking at- oh.

They're looking at Cellica.

A slow murmur comes from the villagers, who slowly gather in a crowd around you two, staring incredulously at her. Cellica looks at you, panicked look on her face.

Nudging Gunnar in between Cellica and the crowd, you say,

"Make way. We have a job to do."

Whispering among themselves, the villagers slowly step aside, and let you through. Riding forward, you head to the other side of the square, where the horses are tied.

Dismounting, you tie Gunnar to a post, and tie Cellica's horse next to him. Holding out a hand, which she accepts, you help her down from her horse, Cellica looks at you nervously.

"They... they were staring at me. Did you see it? How they were looking at me? Why were they looking at me? Was it because I'm an elf? Was it because of that? Do you think they hate me? OhgodswhatshouldIdoIknowIshouldn'thavecomeherewhydidyoumakemecomehere-"

You cut her off, holding a hand up.

"Pull yourself together, Cellica. We've work to do."

Taken somewhat aback by your blunt tone, Cellica looks down, hurt.

"Al-alright..."

Turning abruptly, you scan your men. They've already received several sheep, and have slit their throats, holding them over buckets, draining their corpses. Good. Soon enough, you'll have enough to mark all of the homes.

Standing in the square, you sigh. How did it come to this? Preparing to fight the Wild Hunt in some godforsaken land, surrounded by heathen? It's enough to make a man scream.

You suppose that the gravity of the whole situation hasn't hit you yet. If it did, you suppose you'd break down sobbing.

"Um, Victor?"

You turn your head, and see Cellica, nervous.

"I...." She looks away from your gaze. "I don't like it when....When you talk to me like that..."

Shuffling, she says, "It's just... sometimes you just get so.... blunt, and other times, you're so kind.... why do you do that?"

She manages to look you in the eyes. "I know we haven't known each other for very long at all, but... I want to be your friend, and I respect you a lot...."

>"Cellica, I'm sorry. I've been feeling kind of stressed out lately, and this situation hasn't been helping any."

"Cellica, I'm sorry. I've been feeling kind of stressed out lately, and this situation hasn't been helping any."

You look at the elf, tiredly.

"I mean, I'm here in the first place, in some strange land, and now I'm being hunted by the Fæ! It's kind of overwhelming, you know? It's nothing you did."

Cellica looks up at you, faint smile on her face.

"Thanks, Victor. I understand."

Punching you lightly in the shoulder, she says, "Now let's go get ready, alright?"

Smiling, you nod.

"Yeah. Let's go."

Well. Same result. Huh.

"Men, we are to ride east. We will draw the Wild Hunt away from the village. This is not their fight, after all."

You men take this in stride, accepting this with grim looks on their faces. Drawing them away will surely mean casualties. However, they accept their duty, for they are bound to protect the innocent with honor by their vows.

"We will ride to the moors, and use the terrain there to our advantage. With our guide, " you motion to Cellica, "we'll try and lose them there."

Pausing a bit, you think, and then say, "We'll leave an hour before midnight, so we'll have a head start. Armor up, and care for your horses until then. Fall out."

Walking to Father Donaidh's side, Cellica following, you place your hand on his shoulder.

"I want you to stay with the villagers. This will be more dangerous than any situation you'll have ever been in, and-"

The short Scot laughs quietly, patting your back good-naturedly.

"Aye, don't worry, I know what I can and can't do. Ah'll take care of the villagers. Who knows? I might get a bit 'o work in with my cudgel!"

You shake your head, saying, "I hope to avoid that by what we're doing..."

Father Donaidh sighs. "Aye, I know. I was tryin' to keep the mood light, but apparently that's not possible. I'll be prayin' for ya, lad. You too, miss," he says, pointing at Cellica.

As you watch the stout monk walk to the crowd of villagers, you sigh. Cellica looks at you, nervous.

"Victor? H-have you ever faced anything like these odds before? I haven't done anything like this...."

"Yes, back in Germany, there was a battle in the Black Forest between us and a bandit tribe."

Interested, Cellica tilts her head, and you continue.

"This tribe was slaughtering pilgrims who were on their way from Luxembourg to Rome. So, I, along with one hundred other knights, rode with a large group of pilgrims. Deep in the forest, we were suddenly attacked by bandits from every direction. We were outnumbered at least two to one."

Cellica, enthralled by your story, blurts, "Well, what happened next?"

"We formed a ring around the pilgrims, and defended them until the bandits started to break and run. When they began to retreat, half of our force formed up, and charged after them."

Smiling, you say, "We chased them halfway to France, that day." Looking to Cellica, you say, "So, with courage and faith, we will be able to defeat the Wild Hunt."

Face now serious, you raise a finger. "However, it will still be bloody, like all battles are wont to be. However, God helps those that help themselves, so our victory is all but assured."

Cellica smiles. "Thanks, Victor. That makes me feel batter about this whole thing, knowing you have confidence in us. I'll do my best to lead you through!"

Filled with a new resolve, the ginger elf pats down her horse, readying her for the hell that is to come. While you believe in everything you just told her, you will admit, you are scared. Who wouldn't be? But your duty and honor comes first, and you must protect innocents, heathen or no.

Standing beside Cellica, patting down Gunnar, you both stand in silence. For once, there's really nothing to say.

-------------------------------

About eleven o'clock, you mount up, and your column of crusaders silently rides along the east track. About a quarter after eleven, it begins to rain. Hard.

About eleven-thirty, you begin to see movement in the woods around you. A quarter 'til midnight, they solidify to the black shapes of wolves.

Picking up the pace, you reach the forest's edge at midnight.

A black horn sounds from the woods, screaming,

"GALLOP!"

At your command, the men behind and around you kick their horses forward, staying just ahead of the Black Dogs of Wod. Rain almost blinding, you're relying on Cellica for directions, and she calls them out to your men, frantically.

"Left! Right! There's a pothole there! Left! Marsh!"

She leaps over the pool herself, leaving a Black Dog to trip into it, and drown, yelping.

Around you, you begin to hear the beginning sounds of combat, men grunting, wolves howling and snarling, and steel biting into flesh and bone.

At the lead of the charge, you don't have to worry too much about the hellish wolves with yellow eyes, but your relative calm is soon broken as a massive amount of wolves comes charging from the right, trying to cut you off.

Raising your sword, you scream an unintelligible phrase before swinging at the first wolf to leap at you.

As the wolf leaps towards you, you bring down the sword on its' neck, cleaving clean through the flesh and bone.

The corpse falling to the ground behind you, you quickly whip the blade around to stab another wolf in the throat, and then keep riding.

All around you, the charge seems to be doing good work, cutting swaths through the wolves, and staying just ahead of the main body of the Wilde Jaege.

Spotting another wolf, this time, about to leap at Cellica, you turn Gunnar, and have him trample the wolf, planting a hoof through his chest.

Nodding at you, Cellica yells, "Thanks!", which is quickly whipped away by the rain, wind, and sounds of combat. Both turning your attention forward, you hear something that makes you pause for a second.

A loud hissing noise, that can be heard over the wind and sounds of battle... A large, sword-sized arrow suddenly sprouts from a nearby Teuton's chest. Bowmen! But what kind of bow could launch such arrows-

You hear a loud hissing sound, this time, accompanied by a whistling shriek.

From the sound of the whistling, and the feeling of air pressure from just behind you, you determine that you need to deflect it.... NOW!

Twisting around backwards, you turn your shield along your body, and with a hideous screech of metal, deflect it away.

However, before you can even fully turn around, you hear and feel another arrow, this time aimed at your head. Leaning back, you move your head just enough, so that you feel the arrow pass over you, and embed itself in a wolf, in front of you.

Pulling yourself back up, you gab Gunnar's reins, and ready for another arrow, but it never comes for you, instead, changing target to a certain elf. However, Cellica dodges it with ease and grace, barely moving in the saddle.

You hear a howl in some primordial language come from the shadows of the forest, and similar yells coming from along the treeline. Behind the endless sea of black wolves, larger shapes emerge. Stranger shapes.

You're glad you can't see them beyond their silhouettes right now.

Turning around, you continue to charge away from the forest. You just need to hold out until daybreak. You just need to hold out until daybreak. That's when your grandma told you when you were a boy. Wait, why do you remember that?

Everything seems to... slow down around you, from Gunnar galloping beneath you, to Cellica and your Teuton brothers beside you. The rain comes to a standstill, and you feel a sense of whimsical wonder about the whole situation.

The Fae? The Wild Hunt? Old wives' tales. In fact, you're probably dreaming this. Yeah, that's what this is. A big, silly dream.

Jumping off Gunnar, you feel drawn to a woman with a parasol who is standing, waiting in front of you. She's beautiful. And naked. Which doesn't bother you at all. Should it bother you?

Holding out a hand for you to take, the Lady smiles. Taking it gracefully, you bow, kissing the back of her hand.

"Greetings, my Lady. What do you say we get out of here and go some place nicer? You'll catch a cold!"

With her preternaturally serene smile, the Lady nods.

O̵͜f̡͢ ̢c͞o͞ų͟͝rsè̸̛,̸ ̵̡͟m̶̨ỳ̡ ́̀b͠͝͠r̷͡ąve̴̡ ̸͘͢kń͟i̢g̡h̨t͟.̸̵͟ ̛̀͟L̡͜͠èt̀͜͠ ų̡̛s͞ ̢̀go̡̧ ͢͢b͝ack͡͞ ̵hom̸̵e͝, ̴͟s̢̛͞o̢͘ ̢́͞ẃ͝e̡ ̕͠çan ́͞re͠v͘é͟l̕ ̵͘͡i̴͞n͜͜ t͢ḩe ͢ḑ̕e̵̡̕l̸͢i͜g̕h̴t̷̛s ̀̕͝o̸̷f͠ ́͠m̨y͟ ͞k̷͝͠i̡͠n̴̷̕g̸d̢o̵̢͜m͟.̵̀͟

Taking off your cloak, you wrap it around her beautiful, regal shoulders. Holding out an arm, she taps her chin, as if thinking.

M̶ý͢ ̧K̷͠ńi͞͞g̵h̴͢t̷,̨̢ I̵ ̢h̵a̷͝v̡͟͡é o͜ń̷́e̵ ̧̀t̡as͘͡k ̧̛b̴̡ȩ̸̕f͢o̧r͠e̸͝ ̷͘y̵̨̛o͞ù̸ co̢m̨͟e͘͡ ̵͘t̷o̵̧ ̴m̢̧̕y̛ ̸̧͢k͢ì̢ngd͢͝o̷m͞ ̶w̸̵i͢th̸ ̡̀͝m̸e̷͡.̷ ̛Y̢͟ơú̴ s̷é̕͝e̶̢ ̶̵th̡̨̛ós̀̀e͡ ̕v̸͡i͘ĺ̸̴e̵ ͘f̸̢͡i̸é̷n͢d͢s̵?̢̡ She points to the knights charging towards her perfect person.

Nodding, excited at the possibility of a 'reward', you unsheath your sword, and stride towards the enemy knights, who are frozen in place.

Raising your sword, you start to run at the knights, ready to swing, until you notice one thing.

Next to the horse you arrived on, is a determined-looking, ginger-haired elf, who, despite her slight frame, rides with the same bravery that the knights have in their eyes.

..... You know her.

What was her name?

Caelica?

Cullisa?

Cell... Cellica?

Everything snaps into place, and you whip around, sword ready to swing, but the Lady is gone, leaving nothing but a haunting laugh on the breeze, and the scent of flowers.

Slowly, almost imperceptibly, the world begins to move forward again, raindrops falling, and Crusaders charging.

Leaping up on Gunnar, you grab his reins tight, and shiver. What exactly happened, then? How.... is this happening?

Unfortunately, you don't have time to think on this, as up ahead, a familiar form appears out of the rain. The horse-and-rider spirit from earlier. Galloping towards you, it lets out an inhuman shriek of a laugh, green gas spilling from its' mouths, and swings its arms towards you, seeming to have them stretch much longer than they should be able to be.

DEUS VULT
>>
>>1198142

As you watch the arm fly towards you with unnatural speed, you narrow your eyes. This demon won't stand between you and victory.

Catching the claw hand on the shield, you lash out quickly against the stretchy arm, severing the claw hand cleanly from the now-limp arm.

The horse-and-rider demon, who was aiming for Cellica with his second arm, lashes out, screaming in pain, trying to hit you with the other one.

You swing, but all you can do is leave a deep, nasty cut along its' 'forearm'. Retracting its' arms, dripping a vomit-green ichor, the demon screeches, making you freeze with terror for a moment, but only for a moment. Around you, a few Teutons actually keel over, clutching their chests, and fall off their horses, getting trampled by the charge. You see Cellica wince, briefly, before shaking her head, and shooting an arrow at the beast.

She hits the cyclopic horse skull in the eye, causing it to breathe even more green gas and stamp on the ground in impotent rage. Keeping up a steady barrage of arrows, she lets you approach the beast, charging on Gunnar, sword at the ready.

As you approach, it whips its heads around at you, spewing a noxious green gas. Gagging, you nonetheless manage to swing your sword through the horse-head, and up into the forehead of the rider-head, causing it to freeze, as it realizes its' in its' death throes.

Instead of screaming and flailing like you expected it to, it simply looks at you, and then falls to the ground, limp. Strange.

Continuing your mad gallop, you notice that your formation is falling apart, many men and horses are dead, and everyone who lives is exhausted. However, on the horizon, through the rain, you see a glimmer of hope.

Sunshine. The sun is up. Grinning madly, you turn around, to see nothing behind you but a trail of bodies about as far as the eye could see.

"HAHA! WE DID IT! WE SURVIVED THE WILD HUNT!"

Rain pouring down, what's left of your men let out a ragged, exhausted cheer. Cellica simply slumps in the saddle, and you manage to support her, and keep her upright, before she falls.

"PRAISE GOD! PRAISE GOD!"

Your men let out a cheer, that they shout to the heavens, jubilant, though the rain still falls.

I ain't. It's just that it was stated that this is "Wod's hunt", and this is obviously based of the old folklore. Just kinda connecting the dots.
>>
>>1198245

It stops raining not long after. The ride back to the village is long, and arduous, and especially painful every time you discover a corpse of a Brother. You sling them across the backs of your horses, taking them with you. They will receive a Christian burial.

No one's much for talk, while they do this. Only 24 of your men survived the Wild Hunt. It's depressing, seeing each Brother of the Teutonic Order carry a dead one on the back of their horse, but at least you saved the village. When you reach the woods, you find something waiting for you, there. Along the track to the village, the villagers wait. They bow their heads to you, as you pass, murmuring words of thanks.

You suppose you look a mess, judging by the scared looks that the children give you. However, with that fear, comes admiration. As you pass them, they follow you to the village, culminating in a scene, where, a significantly smaller, battered, bloody, and exhausted group of knights stand, surrounded by villagers.

Looking sadly at the body that is laying across Gunnar, a blonde youth of 18, you get down, aching, from the saddle, and say to your men...

>"We dig graves. They all get Christian burials."
>"We make a pyre."

And....

>"We're resting here for one more day, and then leaving."
>"We move out as soon as our comrades are laid to rest."

"We dig graves. They all get Christian burials." The men, grim looks on their faces, immediately hop off their horses, ready to bury them on the spot. "We'll find a clearing... make headstones, and bury them."

You continue with your orders to your men. "Tomorrow, we're going to burn the demons, and behead their corpses, to make sure there is no way they can use their Daemonic magicks to return."

Your men look up at this, questioningly, and you answer, "We're resting here, for one more day, then leaving for the camp. We need it, after what happened."

Turning away, you take the young knight off of Gunnar, and lay him gently on the ground, where the rest of the knights are setting their fallen comrades. Looking at his face for a second, you close his eyes and sight, standing up.

You'd need the horse-and-rider-demon's head(s) for evidence, so you supposed that while the rest of the men are resting, you'll go out and get it. But, as a wave of exhaustion crashes over you, you think, not now. Tying Gunnar to a nearby post, you sit down, back against the wall of a building, looking up at what's visible of the sky from here.

"Hey. Mind if I sit here?"

Cellica's voice comes from right beside you. You shake your head.

"Not at all."

Even if the two of you don't say anything, it helps you both, just having someone there.

On a day like today, where the smell of the Autumn rain is tinged with that of copper and meat, any company is welcome.
