Since you rather not wake Dartaa and the kids up you walk around the town with Ira next to you, when you pass by Varu she smiles and greets you both before heading to the main fire and grabbing a piece of meat to cook, the older Orphans also greet you and hug Ira together before heading to the main fire too, while you pace around the town while talking with Ira you notice some of the older fellows here that are about her age or a bit higher, follow her around with their eyes firmly eyeing her over. Flint and spearheads are ok, the problem is if you want to go larger tham that. But let's not make those, they require to much craftmanship and time (you have to chip pieces little by little to make the general form/edge), instead, let's use the same prinsiple that we used for the spears and swords with serrated bone edges that we introduced using the rectangular flint blades instead.

We can use soft wood, so it can absorb the shook instead of the brittle flint edge, or we can use hard wood. This will make the blades break more ofthen, which will decrease the durability of our weapons, but will fill the target wounds with flint shards.

And about the it being two handed, well, think of it as a bastard sword. It can be used with both hands for more leverage, and it can be used with a shield.

I think it us a one handed swors (and maybe not as heavy or slow as it might look (?)) that was used with a shield because IIRC you are kind of fucked against arrows and other projectiles without a shield. And a larger handle can be added so it can be used with 2 hands if needed.

The weapon breaks if it hits something hard, aka, another sword (and I don't think there will be many of those in the near future). But I think it can cut trough wood and bones quite effectively (althrough it is not desirable and everything has it limits. And doing so will surely end up dulling the blades).

Let's imaginate we need to make 10 swords for the whole tribe.

We have 10 planks of wood and enough flint to make 20 edges.

If we just count the time it takes to add the edges. We could make 10 one-edged swords on the same time that it would take to make 5 two-edged swords. Then on the time it would take to add am aditional edge to those 10 swords, we could make another 5 two-edged swords.

In the end, whether we make them into two-edged swords from the start or add the aditional edge later, we would still end with 10 two edged swords and the amount of time and resourses used would be the same.

The difference is that with one-edged swords we can arm everybody earlyer.

And I don't see why it would decrease the quality, a plank with one edge is just a plank waiting to be added another edge, after all.

The prosses of adding the edge to the plank consist on making a groove, filling it with glue, and adding the blade with preasure.

If we couldn't add another edge, then we also wouldn't be able to replace the blades if they break, when on of the advantages of these weapons is that the blades are remplazable (IIRC, as long as the wood isn't damaged, you can replace them).

Spears are deadly weapons that are cheap to make and let you attack from a grat distance, practically the best meele weapon in human history, but we don't know what kind of things can be out there, what if something needs more cutting power? Or if something can breack spears easily?

Right now, the only thing that comes to my mind are the parasites, maybe the swords will give them a better chance if spears aren't enough? Remember, they have not idea of how to kill them, maybe stabing is not the best idea agains them.

Not that I want to kill a parasite or anything like that, but they can be useful for self-defence.

The strike area of the spear is the head. If something can break a spear easily, it can break your makeshift saw-sword.

I addressed this long ago. They are quick and vicious. Getting close to accommodate the inferior length of the sword isn't...let's say safe. And keep in mind that with your sword weapons, less people can engage a parasite. Swing requires room. With a spear, multiple people can surround one and charge. And we should begin to consider arming spearmen with shields, much like the Spartans.There's a war tactic similar, without the charging, but I cant recall its name at the moment. However, it's VERY effective in culling enemies while rendering them feeble (depending on the shield's strength and spear shaft strength).

Meh, the difference between your metod and mine are minimal, it is just a question if preferences. Varu was the one that asked for cost-effective techniques.

As I understand it, the weight comes from the wood plank, which is thick at the center and tempers to the sides.

And you don't need that much weight as long as you can compensate with sharpness and speed (the longer the blade, the faster the tip will go, and you can keep the weight from rising by making the sword thinner in both thickness and width.)

I don't think the two-handed greep would add that much strengh to the blow (though I can be completly wrong) and our sword are like the originals, so they use thin blades with chipped edges that are put together to make an even edge, far better than that replica.

And about parrying, yeah. In fact, I think that is way they weilded relatibly small shields (compared to the 11 century knights' standar kite shield, the big ones that looked like inverted tear and covered the legs), movility, since the sword wasn't supoced to block/parry anything in the first place.

Yeah, swords have always been auxiliar weapons, and they will be a bummer until we invent belts and sheats (they original had dimentions similars to that of a medieval side-sword, look at the pic that I posted when recomending it), shields are a no-no for hunting teams, especially archers, not only will they weight them down, it just doesn't make sence against wildlife (at least, as long as OP doesn't throw something weird at us).

If we introduce shields, they would be for soldiers, and we have no reason for that.

And though I am a fan of half-swording, I am sure taking hold of an enemy's sword is way harder than grabbing an enemy spear. In fact, isn't that one of the mine disadvantajes of pole-arms?

And even if this is based in nothing but logic, wouldn't the plank structure, with it being thicker at the center, be studier than a spear's staff?

And if they are SAW-blades, they are poorly made, the only saw-blades be have are the ones made with bones.

I discovered this is wrong.

From wikipeadia:
"The size of the shields varied. Some had normal(circular design) dimensions, others covered the whole body."

So they still valued protection over movility like European knights (probably). In fact, I think that the ones with the bigger shields would have the advantage, since it wouldn't actually hamper your movility that much, if anything, it makes your need to move decrease.

Deciding its best not lo leave your wife when she asks you not to you sit back down and move her between your legs with your arms around her while she works, you suspect she enjoys this due to the big smile she has during all the time the two of you stay like that. A feeling of love for Daarta fills you and you desperately take her in your arms to kiss her, you put a hand on her back and slightly lower her diagonally for a kiss (kinda like pic related but with her feet on the ground) she's surprised at your sudden outburst of love but immediately relaxes on you arms, everything around you fades as you continue the kiss but it all comes back when the feeling passes and you break the kiss, you realize Daarta is blushing and when she notices you looking at her she buries her face on your chest, once her head is out of the way you see a circle Glowing Plants and flowers with a strange bright red color to it have blossomed around you and boi, they look beautiful.

IIRC, we won't be able to hold the wood planks togeter without iron. (Be it in the way of bands or rivets/nails).

You look around the two of you looking for the prettiest one to give to Daarta, behind her you see a big red flower that glows brighter than the others with a special pattern etched into its leafs (am i spelling that right? Yeah, you manage to make some good spearheads and stuff and Varu is grateful for another great invention to the tribe, after you're done with the spearheads it's only a couple of hours until your kids get back. And Daarta eventually leaves to the tent when you finish the heads.

When Varu's done congratulating you you take her in your arms and pull her close before kissing her, when you break the kiss you lean closer to her ear and whisper something along the lines of You are NOT sleeping tonight, you hear me love? You can almost feel her nips hardening against your chest when shes done analyzing your words, when you both break the embrace she's blushing and squashing her legs together uncomfortably she then nods and heads to her tent.

Once that is taken care of you head over to where you had left the hide to inspect it, it's still a bit wet, it should be done when your kids arrive in the meantime
