It is the Year of Our Lord 1120. You are Victor Reis, a Knight-Captain of the Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Frankfurt (The Teutonic Order.) You had come to the Holy Land after a request for aid from your brothers in the newly-formed Templar order, and traveled with them to a mountain pass Northeast of Acre, and joining a Saracen horde in battle there, suddenly found yourself in another world, along with your Teuton brothers and Templar allies.

Previously, on Fantasy Crusader Quest....

We got back to camp, and delivered our report. Meeting up with Marcus, Natalia, and Edgar, you all met in your tent to listen to Natalia's story.
>>
>>1279234

Presently, you are Nobilodonna Natalia Baldoni Eufrasia Cusimano of Genova, Knight-Captain of the Templar Order.

You have been in a foreign village, which happens to be on fire, and have been fighting Roman(?) Legionnaires. They belong to some "Imperium Fulminata", and hail a "Remus Caesar," who ordered them to attack the village for not surrendering to the Empire, and being a destination for escaped slaves to run to.

And there is a sorcerer who, using flames of magical origin, was burning the town down around you, standing at the end of the street.

And he's holding a ball of fire in his hands, and seems to be readying it to throw at you.

"I guess this is one of those 'wrong place in the wrong time' things..."

Bowing up, the mage keeps a blank face.

"Anyways, hail Caesar, blah blah, I don't think you'll surrender, so I won't offer, and again, sorry about this."

Flinging the fireball forward, it spirals towards you, but fortunately, his aim was off, and it hits a building about halfway between the two of you, exploding in a gout of flame.

"Huh, aim was off. Oh well." He forms another fireball in his hands.

>(Charge him.)
>(Retreat, form a plan.)

I just write the quest, buddy.

Also, vote's called.
>>
>>1279327

This man's bearing... is not of a patriot, or even a soldier. Whatever his skills may be, he will be more reasonable than the Legionnaires. Also, you don't feel like fighting it out with a man who can call upon the magickal and weird.

"Wait! We can talk this out!"

The man pauses, tilting his head. "Huh. I honestly didn't expect that. So, you're going to surrender?"

"No," you say, shaking your head, "But we don't have to kill each other. You don't seem like the others in the Legion. We can work something out."

Your men look at you quizzically, but most seem to agree with your assessment of the man, even if he is holding eldritch fire in his hand.

Tossing the fireball between his hands, back and forth, almost juggling the sphere of flame, he purses his lips as he considers this.

"Well... I can't say I find any enjoyment in this, true. However, I gotta say, Legion pays ludicrously well for Mage Auxilia. So... maybe? What do you want to discuss?"

>"We both go our separate ways, without killing each other."

"We both go our separate ways, without killing each other."

He seems to scoff at the notion of you killing him, but considers it.

"I'm amiable to that notion, but I won't get paid if I don't do my job. Contract and all."

Shaking your head, you wave at the area around him.

"Do you see anyone around us? If there's no one to witness it, then there's no one to report it. They'll continue paying you, and we won't have to fight."

Dispelling the fireball, he scratches his bearded chin.

"That does sound good. Not having to fight a bunch of knights, and still getting enough money for a manor. I suppose that I'll just... head this way, then?"

Nodding, you watch him warily as he strolls off, whistling. Well that was...interesting. Shaking your head, you nudge your horse forward. The fire is getting worse, and houses are crumbling around you, but there's still room to ride in the streets. The roaring fire crackles around you, as you contemplate your next move.

Riding quicker, now, with some urgency, you keep an eye out for any of your men, or any villagers that you can guide out of the burning town. This place is going to become a deathtrap any time now, if it isn't already.

Through the flames you gallop, and eventually come across a large group of Templars who are wandering about, apparently lost. Shouting out something incoherent, you get their attention, and manage to convey to them that they need to follow you.

Twisting and turning through the streets, you dodge some debris from a crumbling building, and lead your men back to the side of the village you came from. As you follow the path to the south side, you hear something. Panicked shouting.

Turning down a street, you see a few villagers, singed and covered with soot, limping towards you. Riding towards them, you grab one, a small girl, around the wrist, and pull her up behind you on the horse. "Hold on tight, alright?"

The girl whimpers and hugs you tightly, and you turn your horse about, maneuvering your way back to the street that leads back to where you came in. Galloping forward, you grimace as you hear the crackle of fire, and the groan of timber, and see a building tilting over, about to land on you.

Riding, you spur your horse onward, hoping to make it to the other side before the wall crumbles.

Almost...

Almost...

You are a few feet away from being home free when the stones come crashing down upon you, knocking your horse to the ground, and flinging you from the saddle. Landing roughly in the dirt, you roll for a few feet, battering yourself on the hard-packed dirt and cobblestone.

Groaning, and collecting your bearings, you shakily push yourself to your feet, and look about. Dust fills the area around you, obscuring your vision. Behind you, a pile of rubble, and under a large wooden beam, a small, battered hand pokes out.

Eyes wide, you hoarsely whisper, "No."

"No, no no no no no no no no no"

Half-crawling your way over to the rubble, you begin to shudder slightly, grabbing hold of the tiny hand, sobbing. Not the child, not the child- wait, what was that?

Her hand moved.

Eyes snapping open, you look down at the pile, and feel... something.

A surge of warmth spreading from your hand to the child's. You feel slightly drained, but the child's hand starts twitching, and you somehow know she's alive under all that rubble.

Now you just need to pull the rubble off the child.

Gripping the beam in both hands, you grunt as you lift the wood upwards, arms screaming in pain as you strain them beyond anything they should normally be capable of.

You pull, and pull, and it's not until the girl is crawling out that you realize that you're screaming at the top of your lungs. Throwing the beam down, you pant, and pull the child into a bear hug. You don't know her, but you are so so so so so so so so so so so glad she's safe.

Picking her up, you set her on your horse, and mount up behind her. Looking around you suddenly become acutely aware of your men and the villagers staring at you, gaping. Clearing your throat, you nod, and say, "Well, what are you looking at? Let's get out of here!"

Spurred into action, your men move forward, following you out of the town. Once you have left the razed village behind, you look for your other men, and the villagers that you had previously helped escape.

There, on the rise, overlooking the town. Riding towards them, you absent-mindedly pat the girls' head while you consider your next course of action.

You need to take the villagers back to the camp, get them settled in. You also need to report what you saw here to St. Herard. This is important.

As you reach the group, the villagers, for the most part, get off your knights' horses, and rush to their fellow townsfolk, crying in joy as they find their neighbors and family. The girl in front of you, though, stays in the saddle, calmed down by the headpats, sleepy.

Curious, you rub her head, and ask, "Do you not see anyone you know, sweetie?"

The girl yawns and leans into your chest, pressing against your chainmail. "Naw... I didn't 'ave anyone... Can you keep this up?"

She's surprisingly calm about this situation. "Sure, sweetie. Do... do you have a name?"

She shrugs. " 's just Ka. No one ever gave 'm a name, so they just call me Girl."

"Oh... no family?"

"Nah, never needed any, people here are nice, they give me bread and water if I ask."

"I... I can take care of you... if you want."

Ka sighs contentedly in your arms.

"That... sounds... nice." Letting out a little snore, she falls asleep.

.............

Are.... are you a mother now?

----------------------------------------------------------

Heading back to the camp, walking alongside the villagers, you eventually reach the camp again, in the early hours before dawn. Everyone is exhausted, and hurt, but the camp is a relief to see. Getting off your horses, your knights guide the villagers (except for Ka, who you hold in your arms, carrying her with you,) to a spot in the camp where they can rest around a fire.

Walking to your tent, you open the flap, and lay Ka down on your cot, and tuck her in. Patting her head, you leave, and immediately head to the venerable Saint Herard's war tent.

Once you reach the tent, you take a deep breath, and fix your posture, making sure you look perfect. Can't do to look sloppy in front of God's Blessed.

Inside, fellow Templar Knight-Captain, Sir Paglario of Pisa is talking to the Saint, looking vaguely displeased. Well, if 'vaguely displeased' was 'having a face as red as the cross on his armor.'

"Sir, we cannot trust them! I say we destroy the heathen, and leave their remains around our camp as a warning! We have not the time nor the people to convert them-" Paglario is cut off by an intense look from Herard.

"Nawt evryting 's about c'nversion. Sometimes, 's about doin' th' right thing."

Growling, Paglario looks as if he's about to launch into another angry rant, when he spins around pointing at you.

"YOU! What the Devil do you think you were doing, you sodden wench?"

>"I was saving helpless people from evil men. Do you have a problem with that?"

Raising a single eyebrow, you cough politely, clearing your throat before continuing.

"GODS WORK YOU BLITHERING FOOL. IS IT NOT OUR DUTY TO DEFEND THE WEAK AND GOOD FROM THOSE OF ILL INTENT!"

Your voice rings out in the tent, bombarding both him and Saint Herard with sound, and you gesticulate wildly, angry.

"OR WOULD YOU HAVE ME STAND BY AND WATCH THEM PILLAGE AND RAPE THE TOWN?" Striding up to Sir Paglario, you poke him in the chest, punctuating every sentence.

"I WOULD IMAGINE THAT JESUS WOULD ADMIRE YOUR SENTIMENTS, SIR! HE WOULD APPLAUD YOUR MORAL STANDING."

Turning on your heel, you point to the door.

"NOW, SIRRAH, IF YOU MIGHT ESCORT YOURSELF OUT, YOU BUFFOON!"

Jaw dropped, and gaping, eyes wide from your sudden outburst, Paglario just nods and walks out, stunned.

Behind you, you hear a particular growling sound, that, when you look at St. Herard, you identify as the bear-like man chuckling.

"Hrr. Hrr. Hrr. Well done, m'lady."

Clapping, he stands up, popping his neck.

"So, what's it yer wan' me to hear?"

"Well, we were travelling northwest, when we saw a small cloud of smoke..."

Leaning against the table, you tell him the full story, not leaving out any detail. As you leave, you look up at the sky.

You're glad you did some good.

".... and after that buffoon left, I gave my report, and went back to my tent. I've been spending most of my time with Ka. She's a dear, and she wants to become a knight like me!"

You are Victor Reis, and Natalia has finished telling her story. Marcus and Cellica watch her, enthralled, and you admit, that was quite the story.

Shifting your weight in your chair, you say,
