In a time of global conflict, the elite international task force Overwatch was formed. Soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities: together, they ended the Omnic Crisis and restored peace to a war-torn world. For a generation, the heroes of Overwatch protected the world, inspiring an era of exploration, innovation, and discovery.

After many years, Overwatch became troubled, and finally disbanded. Without them, world conflict and terror rose again. Governments weakened by strife ceded power to mega-corporations. Militaries were replaced by private security forces. Some omnics returned to war with humanity; others remained peaceful, but faced fear and violence.

Overwatch was gone. But the world still needed heroes.

You are a young man who's been many things: adventurer, treasure hunter, freedom fighter, and international criminal. Recently you encountered the re-formed Overwatch: a grand title for two ex-agents, Winston and Tracer, operating as outlaws out of an abandoned Watchpoint. Despite their down-and-out-status, or perhaps because of it, you were inspired to join them. You left your old life behind to become the first recruit of the new Overwatch.

Now you and Tracer are travelling the globe, defending the people of the world from harm and searching for potential agents to rebuild Overwatch. The world needs heroes. Maybe you can be one of them.

Has Overwatch returned?

This is the question asked all over the darkweb, those few independant sites that remain outside corporate control. Psuedonymous journalists collect citizen accounts, blurred photographs, security footage, air-transport records. Putting together these pieces, they look at the puzzle and say, can it be true? And if so, if Overwatch is really back, what can they even do? Years ago, the original team, the UN task force, stopped the world from sliding into chaos. Can it happen again? Many feel like the world is too far gone this time.

The world web, the official global network of information, is held with a tight fist by the megacorps. The vidnews shows exactly what the executives want it to. And for whatever reason, they're keeping Overwatch out of it. Maybe they're embarassed that your team walked right in to their corporate citadel in Rio, freed Lucio, and walked right out again. Maybe they don't like the idea of people knowing there's something out there outside of the executives' control.

Or maybe it's just an opportunity for their own propoganda. The King's Row victory against Talon is being credited to Helix Security's special counter-terrorism unit. An interview and photo-op is taken with an Iraqi man in an armored jet suit. Something like Pharah's Raptora, but bigger, and red and black instead of blue and gold. Still looks like your average Helix thug to you.

You flip through some of the independant sites again. The evidence for the reborn Overwatch is growing stronger. It might eventually get to the point where no amount of corporate censorship can stop the news from getting out.

The longer we can stay hidden and build up, the better. You think people won't come for us when they figure out where we are? And they will figure out where we are.

>>
>>1289340
If we're just going to let this happen, and we apparently will, we need to dissociate ourselves from Overwatch. People are going to remember the shady criminal bit that was terrifying and could be anywhere doing anything, and we started out as a essentially that, in the public's eyes. Especially since the corps, once this gets out, are going to be switching everything into spindoctor mode and try to make us look like villains.
>>
>>1289340

Good, you think. Everyone should know we're back. The people should know that someone out there is trying to protect them.

After all, everyone you're fighting against -- Talon, Anubis, and the megacorps -- already know that you exist. If the citizens of the world fight out about you too, you might even have some allies in the fight.

You're not totally sure on this one, though. "Athena, what do you think?"

"Uncertain," she says. "Hope and inspiration can be powerful, but emotional factors are difficult to analyze. I can say that, as knowledge of our existence grows, the probability of finding allies among the citizenry increases. However, the more attention we draw to ourselves, the more urgent a threat we present to our enemies."

That's true. Something you're well acquainted with from back in your thieving days is that, if the people keep talking about a certain crime, that puts that much more pressure on the authorities to solve the case. Magnify that to a global scale, and the more the citizens are inspired by Overwatch, the more the people invested in ruining that inspiration will want to put a stop to the source of it: you and the team.

Dammit. All you want to do is protect world civilization from chaos and tyranny. Is that really so much to ask?

(Continued)
>>
>>1289417

Of course, this assumes there's a world civilization left to protect for much longer. Talon attacks more frequently, and their list of criminal allies grows longer. Anubis continues its defragmentation process, and the more it assembles, the more power it will have. The megacorps tighten their stranglehold on the economy, the law, and the world web.

And of course there's a war going on, even though nobody likes to talk about it.

People talk forebodingly about what might happen "if" a second Omnic Crisis begins. Perhaps it makes them feel comforted to avoid thinking of the outbreak in Siberia as a "real" crisis. The news doesn't describe it as a war, after all, merely a series of police actions.

Information from the front is heavily censored. The news reports only endless victories and stories of heroic triumph. Still, you remember when the fighting was confined entirely to the Siberian taiga. Now the western Omnic front has pushed the Russians almost all the way to the Ural Mountains. A second army of slaved Omnic soldiers advances southeast, into China, Mongolia, and Korea. If the military keeps winning, why do they keep getting pushed back?

You flip onto the darkweb and check the latest estimates of the actual battle lines. Bad news. You might have to face the grim reality that the second Omnic Crisis has already started without waiting for you.

>This is our responsibility. We have to stop this, somehow.

I want to help, but not when we're having to deal with so much with nothing other than a skeleton crew of heroes. I don't feel good about hiring/recruiting a lot of non hero soldiers considering they are bound to get killed in considerable number in any serious conflict, but i feel like once overwatch is truly functional again with more heroes, a truly formidable station and some research and engineering staff, we should devote time into breeding the next generation of fledgling heroes.

Maybe later we'll deal with the war in Russia, you think. Overwatch stopped the first Omnic crisis, maybe it can do it again. But right now we've got enough to deal with. A terrorist agency, rogue godmind fragments, and an oppressive plutocratical regime is probably enough for one group of heroes to deal with at once.

Maybe later on you'll have the numbers to deal with an army. Someday you'll have more agents, a proper engineering team, maybe even your own small army of soldiers. But right now you're running on a skeleton crew. That day is far in the future, if it ever comes.

On the subject of the fighting in Korea, you haven't had the chance for a while to tune in to your favorite combat stream. You deserve a little break. You check the schedule for the next live feed. As luck would have it, it's just about to start.

You tune in to the stream just as it fizzles to life. "Helloooo?" a girl's voice asks. Her eyes and pink headphones pop into view from the bottom of the screen. "Not sure if I've got this new transceiver right. Can you hear me, chat?"

DVa interacts with her chat as she climbs into her pink MEKA suit. "Hi Jake420, it's great to be back! TwoBears, thank you! I wasn't sure about this haircut but I think now I like it! Stealer57, maybe I'll hit something today? Hah, yeah right, I'd like to see you try to hit anything with these fusion cannons the military gives me. Can't hit anything past five meters with these."

That's just cause you suck, you type back. Hero of my Storm 2 when?

"Switching to MEKA cam," DVa says, and the camera flickers to an interview view of her inside the mech suit. "Not sure, Stealer! I'm game, though. Hollywood was great! And I loved working with Greenways and Thespian 4.0."

Anti-Omnic slurs fill the chat window as the robotic actor is mentioned.

DVa frowns at it. "I know we're at war -- excuse me, I mean border policing -- with the Omnics and all, but Thespian is cool, all right? So shut up. Okay, we're boosting off pretty soon. Wish me luck, chat!"

The chat fills with heart emotes.

"Okay, taking off! Let's shoot for a new high score!"

DVa's company of MEKA soldiers makes their way through the hills of Korea, rapidly transitioning between marching and their short-range flight boosters. Soon they're on the flank of an Omnic army.

The highly mobile Korean mechs close in with the Omnics, using their defensive matrix arrays to protect their assault. At short range, the MEKA's fusion cannons blast through the robotic soldiers' armor, and the Omnic lines are thrown into disarray.

Whenever a MEKA is damaged beyond recovery, the pilot has a chance to eject. Some don't make it out alive, at least for long, but those who do support the advance of their mech-suited comrades with small long-range blaster pistols.

Sometimes a pilot even survives long enough to call down another MEKA from the low-orbit factories. The Korean manufacturing capabilities greatly outclass their war-decimated population's ability to produce skilled pilots.

DVa prattles in retro gamer slang as her mech's energy cannons punch through one slaved Omnic after another. "Just GG out already!"

With a cute face, a bratty attitude, and 600+ actions per minute on standard control interfaces, Hana Song became one of the world's most popular gaming streamers when she went undefeated at Retro Gamefest's Starcraft tournament for three years running. When she was conscripted into the Korean military, she found that her audience was just as hungry to watch a real war.

That would be one way of helping Overwatch's public relations issues, you suppose. Recruiting a web celebrity like DVa. The thought of an obnoxious gamer teenager like DVa on the base gives you a laugh. She might make things more interesting around here, one way or another.

Actually, having an ace mech pilot on the team might be even more useful. Having one of those great big pink MEKAs stomping around on your front lines next to Reinhardt and Winston, blasting Talon operatives with fusion cannons and protecting the team with that defense matrix, would actually be really good.

There is the minor obstacle that she's a conscript in her country's military. No idea if there's a way to get out of that without becoming an international fugitive. Of course, she'd become one of those anyway just by joining Overwatch.

So it would just be a question of getting her to abandon the defense of her homeland against the Siberian Omnics, leaving behind her friends, comrades, and family, and join a rag-tag team of vigilantes. Sounds easy enough, right?

Yeah, no idea how that one's going to happen. You'll have to put "Recruit DVa" on the mission backlog for now.

An alert pops onto your screen. A new message from Mercy. You switch off the stream to read it.

After-Action Medical Report
From: Dr. Angela Ziegler

Mercy's given you a short-write up of the team's injuries from the King's Row mission. You skim the details of their wounds and find the part you're looking for:

Estimated Time to Recovery

Genji Shimada: 5 days
Jesse McCree: 4 days
Reinhardt Wilhelm: 8 days
Torbjörn Lindholm: 4 days

Okay, that could be worse, you think. Before the 21st century, if you ended up standing next to a bomb that went off, you probably wouldn't be around to tell people about it, let alone back in the field in a little over a week. Biotic technology really is a great thing.

If something does happen in the next four days, at least you've got enough agents now to put together a full team, even with four agents on the scratch list.

You flop back onto your bunk, dropping your datapad on the stand. Wishing, not for the first time, and probably not the last, that someone else was dealing with these decisions and not you.

You hear someone clear their throat. Startled, having not realized anyone else was in the crew quarters, you sit up and look at the sound.

"Hi, Seeker!" says Mei. "I was looking for you. Oh, have you met Snowball?" She holds out a small blue drone. It blinks its eyes, hovers into the air, and twirls in a circle around Mei, sprinkling her with a flurry of snow it generates from a vent underneath. "Haha, stop it, you! Snowball is a weather modification drone, as you can see. I just got him up and running again."

"Hi, Snowball," you say to the drone.

It hovers up close to your face, playing the eye-blink emote on its optics as it examines you. Then it spins around in place in the air, like a top, releasing another burst of snow. It wiggles while making a sound oddly like a laugh, then zips behind Mei, where it attaches itself to some kind of charging station on the back of her outfit.

"I like him," you say. "I used to have some little guys like him around when I was a kid. I should point out, though, that Talon has a skilled hacker working for them. Is he, you know, secure?"

"Don't worry," says Mei. "His core programming only speaks the research language of the Ecopoint computers. Unless Talon picked up one of those and brought it here, they're out of luck, and last I checked, it was buried under ten feet of ice."

"Glad to hear. Just checking, you know? Got to cover our bases. Hope you're not offended."

"Oh no," Mei rushes to say. "I understand how important cyber security can be."

"Okay, good. You said you were looking for me, right? Did you want to talk about something?"

"Well, it actually happens to be about the Ecopoint computers. And how they're buried in ice. Um ..." Mei taps her fingers together, looking back and forth as she tries to get her thoughts together. "There was some valuable climatology data saved there. I think it's very, um. Important. The database drives are buried, but they were made to be resistant to arctic weather conditions, so I suspect if they were excavated, we'd still recover some of the data.

"Also, um. The base looks bad, but there's really not that much structural damage. With further excavation, a restoration of the field generator, and a little TLC, I think the entire Ecopoint could be made servicable again. Maybe." She looks at you hopefully. "What do you think?"

>What's important about the data?

>Securing the Watchpoint comes first.

"I don't doubt that whatever data is at the Ecopoint is valuable, but it won't do us any good to divide resources between bases just yet. Can't spread ourselves so thin at this point."
>>
"A second base could be useful," you admit. "We could keep it in reserve as a bolt hole, or maybe put some sensitive projects there. Later on we might actually have enough agents and staff to properly operate two full bases at a time. Wouldn't that be something." You think it over.

The Watchpoint does have to be made secure first, but you've already made some pretty good progress in that direction. The doors have electronic keycard locks now, the radar array has been upgraded to detect enemy dropships, and the interior and perimiter security cameras have been supplemented with scanners to search for heat signatures. Maybe it would be a good idea to divert some resources to restoring the Ecopoint. On the other hand, there's a lot you could still do to improve the Watchpoint's defenses. You'll think it over.

"What about this climate data you were talking about?" you say. "What's so important about it? I doubt you'd be telling me this about some weather reports."

"N-no, it's, um, the research my team and I were doing down there. Research on climate change. You know about the Big Shift, right?"

"Sure," you say. "World climate went haywire back in the 40s. That's part of why we almost lost the war against the Omnics. Hard to run an economy when half the world is drowning, freezing, or boiling."

Mei nods. "We geo-engineered some solutions, but the full ramifications of the event were never fully explored. That's what my team and I were trying to investigate. Potential consequences from the Shift. Climate is a very, very complex system, Seeker, and only a tiny change can throw our world's ecosystem out of balance. It may turn out that our problems were not actually solved, only delayed."

"Oh boy," you sigh. "So now in addition to evil robots, terrorists, and corporate jackboots, I've got the entire planet's ecosystem to worry about! That's just great."

"I-I'm sorry," says Mei, taking a step back. "I-if you--"

"No, no, I'm sorry. Just a little worked up, is all. Got a lot on my mind. Speaking of which, why are you talking to me about all this in the first place?"

"I figured I'd need a budget allocation to clean out the Ecopoint," she says. "I asked Mr. Winston about it, and he said to talk to your computer, Athena. And she said to talk to you. So here I am." She laughs nervously. "Although I thought you were just a recruit, so I don't really get it, but okay. Are you the Overwatch treasurer or something?"

>>
"Anything to say about this, Athena? I know you're listening."

Athena's voice comes from your datapad. "I do not see myself as in charge, Mei-Ling Zhou, and I don't think you should see me that way either. I advise the team in the best ways I know how. That is all."

"It's just a little strange," says Mei. "When I went into that cryo chamber, the Crisis wasn't even over yet. Now, not only is Overwatch less than a dozen people, but an AI is the team's ... what? Coordinator? Adjutant?"

You say, "Don't think too much about all this, okay? You can say that we're both in charge. There's enough to deal with saving the world without worrying about this. So far, everything's been working out. Our missions have all been a success -- mostly. The Watchpoint is coming along, team combat strength improved, intel collection improved. Yeah, we're doing pretty well if you ask me."

Of course, you still plan to go further. The reborn Overwatch is just getting started.

Your priority for making the team stronger is:

>Combat: Improve team tactics and coordination in open battle. Recruit combat staff.
>Stealth: Improve infiltration tactics and intelligence gathering. Recruit informants.
>Supply: Improve equipment and base facilities. Recruit support staff.

I like supply too, but if we can take better initiative with ops, and more importantly have CONSISTENTLY good intel for missions and other things, everything else can fall into place. Information is key.

Our facilities are so understaffed. More R&D to get better equiptment and more people to help out Mercy means she can go into the field more often. This should be prioritized before anything else.

>Stealth: Improve infiltration tactics and intelligence gathering. Recruit informants.
We're still a clandestine organization, intelligence and connections are what we need most to know where to strike or when we're about to be attacked.

We should also go about establishing a network of contacts in government sector, because no matter how well upgraded, the gibraltar base stands no chance against official authorities and regular army.

By my count, Supply takes the vote over Stealth 13-7. We'll focus on improving the team's equipment and logistics, the Watchpoint facilities, and support staff like engineers, adjutants, and other auxiliaries.

I'll be resuming in about 8 hours from this post, so let's have a vote on who Seeker hangs out with then, when he takes a break from the stresses of being Overwatch's nooblet commander.

Let's choose one person you're developing a relationship with:

MEANWHILE, IN THE BLIZZARDVERSE

Orisa finally dropped on the main servers today after a few weeks on the PTR! Whether or not Raven will maintain pace with the stop-start, spastic pace of the game's character releases remains to be seen, but here's to hoping the Omnic centaur lady gets along well with the rest of the roster.

In other news, the PTR updates have added a couple tidbits of lore to some of the characters different skins, giving us some morsels such as Ana's callsign back when she as in the Egyptian military, the name of the patriarch of the Shimada clan, and the fact that mecha fights are popular down in Straya.

WE NOW RETURN YOU TO YOUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED UPDATE HIATUS

but Numnani makes more sense on how it came to be then Wakanda
>>
>>1290983
That would be a really weird ultimate for us.
>>
>>1291006
I think it's because she single handedly is a rien/mercy/bastion combo and has Unstoppable. That plus a more useful/controllable Zarya ult as an alternative fire.

Her personality is almost Bastion but can talk. She's a happy playful child unaware of her own strength.

To me she's the pinnacle of Fan wank. Like God damn batch sell the design to a Corp, make bank to save your shirt hole village and have your OR15a churned out enmass
>>

>>

>So Numbani just... ignored the Omnic crisis?
it was built after the crisis by both ominc and humans
>>
I'd like to chip in on this debate as well, regarding orissa. Seeing as I've discussed it with a friend before.

Essentially her backstory is that, after the technologically advanced super-city / arcology / paradise that is "numbani" or however it is spelt, realised the threat doom-fist proposed to their civilisation should he get the gauntlet. They began a program to create a new form of combat drone / omnic-lite specifically to counter him.

This is the technology that orissa is based off of, and apparently improves on, produced by a combination of the literal best and brightest omnic and human minds on a devil-may-care, no-number-too-big, write-yourself-a-check budget from a government under the supervision of the highly trained (presumably) military.

Turns out however, that doomfist still beat the ever-living shit out of them, even when they sent entire squads of the shitty things against him.

But then, outta nowhere, comes this random and prior unmentioned super genius little black girl of like 13 years old or some shit. She then proceeds, to not only take a piece of a crime scene away and thus break the law but a highly advanced military tech which she then restores on the budget available to this little teenage girl. So like some fucking grant money or something from being a super-special genius.

AND THEN, as if that wasn't unbelievable enough she manages to improve on it and find the space and time to fit an AI into the fucking thing. Which in and of it self is probably a crime, given what the god minds did and shit.

...What part of that sounds like it fits the lore to you?
>>
>>1291076
RIP.

>>1291080
Aaand that makes it any less silly? I'm sorry, but with the amount of anti-Omnic prejudice I've seen, I doubt they could raise enough capital to make a TENEMENT, let alone a CUTTING-EDGE CITY IN AFRICA.

>>1291090
Thank you.
>>
>>1291072

>>

>>
>>1291090

>>
>>1291105
That makes it even worse. What corp would want to risk the omnics unless one of them is controlled by a Godmind?
>>
>>1291090
That was comprehensive. It also sounds something like that random black girl replacing Tony Stark. Fuck that's annoying.
>>
>>1291106
I like overwatch, I frankly love the universe and the characters but find the game to be at best above-average.

So every time something like this happens, I die a little inside. Every "tracer is gay" out of nowhere or Orissa or even the existence treatment of Torb + his beliefs in the recent bastion / Torb comic.

They have a great universe and have had years to finalise their ideas, create characters and even entire plot lines yet they keep on making silly mistakes or bad ideas or just fucking things up for no reason.

I mean, I could have made any of these ideas like 20% more tolerable in like 2 minutes and could show how. I could have given precedent to them in about 5 and in 20 I could have convinced most people this was the logical choice.

Still, nothing is gained raging in silence, so I don't do anything.

>>1291119
Nope tony stark makes sense, he is the head of a multi-billion dollar weapons development firm. He was raised by another amazing scientist and engineer and almost all of his work is essentially built off of his fathers or is refined over the course of like 40 odd suits, 3 films, god knows how many TV series and comics. There is a logical progression of his abilities from A to B and we can follow the developments of new things. With this it's like they just threw in a new character out of nowhere, refer to my prior paragraphs for what I mean.

Early afternoon finds you and Winston checking on the new expanded radar system. The arrays of dishes and spheres don't really make a lot of sense to you, but Winston and Athena agree that this should give you a good early warning system about unwelcome visitors by air or sea. They also found room to keep the big Overwatch flag, of course. It's not exactly a subtle sign as to who lives in this secret base, but you're probably not going to convince them to take it down anytime soon. Oh well.

Your stomach growls, reminding you that you skipped lunch. You excuse yourself, hop down to the road, and head up through the garage towards the mess hall.

As you pass a shadowed hallway, a sudden movement freezes you in your tracks. "Draw!" barks a familiar American-accented voice. McCree emerges, giving you the finger-gun with his left hand, the mechanical one. "Bang! Yer dead, pilgrim." He blows on his index finger and grins at you. "Better work on that quick draw of yours. How's it hanging, Seeker?"

"Pretty good, McCree, all things considered," you say, and add:

"Enjoy your trip to London?" you ask the gunslinger. "I mean, aside from being shot and all."

"Yessir, I did. Always good to see jolly ol' England. Place got pretty banged up in the Crisis, London in particular, but she's made quite a recovery over the years. Let's hope it stays that way for a while this time."

"We did what we could to keep it like that. You guys did good out there. A lot of Omnics owe you their lives, whether they realize it or not.

"Just tryin' to do our part," says McCree.

"What do you think? Of the mission, I mean. I did my best to play eye-in-the-sky, but I know I made mistakes--"

"Don't beat yourself up too much about it, kid," says McCree. "Ain't your fault we took some hits out there. We're all tryin' to shake off the rust. We gotta bring our skills back up to standard, both as fighters, and as a team. I think we did all right. Got the job done, didn't we? Didn't catch them rascals the Junkers, or Li'l Miss Blue, but there'll be another time."

He shakes his head. "I'm just glad we had Mercy out there, though. Hoo boy. That lady is a real treasure. Are ya sure about sendin' Lucio out on tour? A second source of healing tech would be mighty useful if that boy were around."

"I think it's the best call, long-term," you say. "We're still running on a skeleton crew around here. Gotta improve our equipment and staff situation, and to do that, we need to find cash somewhere."

"I see what you mean," he admits. "Money makes the world go 'round, or so they say."

"That they do. I'm headed to get some chow. Join me?"

"Thanks, but I got a thing. I'm headed that way, though."

As you walk beside McCree through the Watchpoint hangar, you ask him about:

>Where he's from, this "New West" you got a brief look at.

"So, tell me something about back in the old days, with the Deadlock gang. You all had quite a reputation back in the day. That was before my time, but I heard a lot of stories. The First Mojave Bank, wasn't that you guys?"

"I dunno, Seeker." McCree scratches under his hat, embarassed. "I don't usually talk about those times. It's a chapter I tried to close. I know I'm technically an outlaw again now, but it's different, y'know? I ain't robbin' banks and such no more."

"True, but you don't have to soft-pedal it around me. You probably don't bring the crime stuff up around here much -- outside of the Shimada boys, everyone's a soldier or a scientist of some kind. They don't have a lot of experience with the world outside the law. But I do."

"Hmm. I guess that's true. I may have heard one or two stories about a quick little thief who fits your description. Weren't you the fella who got into that place, what was it called, Xanadu? The corps' private little city in the mountains, the one they said no-one'd ever find, let alone steal from. And you just walked right in and helped yourself?"

"It wasn't exactly that easy," you say. "But yeah, that was me. That's where I got my current footwear, actually," you say, holding up a boot and triggering the glow effect for emphasis. "Boots that can manipulate gravity for short bursts sure come in handy. And I always wanted glowing shoes."

"They do seem to come in handy, though I can't say I agree with your fashion sense."

"You're one to talk, Mr. Cowboy," you say, laughing. "You know it's 2081, right?"

"Hey, now. This here's the traditional outfit of our culture, or some such nonsense. You oughtta respect that." McCree says, and adds a wink.

"So does everyone out west dress like that?"

"Sort of. Poncho and hat are just practical out there in the sun. The rest of it ..." McCree shrugs. "New West is a strange place, kid. People try to look to the past, to tradition, but it's all jumbled up. Lot of records there didn't survive the crisis. We all tell ourselves old stories, some of 'em that might've never even happened. But that's just the way of it."

"I have to admit, I don't know much about things down there. Figured the desert might've just cooked your brains."

"Can't say that it didn't," says McCree, smiling. "Maybe I'll tell ya about it sometime."

"Maybe over some shooting practice?" you ask hopefully. "I could stand to learn a thing or two from Overwatch's ace marksman."

"We'll see, kid. I gotta go, but I'll talk to ya later."

McCree departs into the crew quarters, while you proceed to the mess hall.

"So we're agreed, then?" you hear as you approach the mess hall. "Every woman for herself?"

"Yer on, lady," you hear in reply.

Entering the caferia, you see Mercy and Tracer sitting at a table together, each holding a ucp of tea, kettle in the center. It would be a relaxing scene if you didn't notice the two of them are giving each other the stink-eye in that subtle way that women do.

You clear your throat. "I'm not interrupting anything, am I?"

Tracer jumps. "Seeker! H-hi mate, er, no. Nothing at all. Just havin' a bit of a chat with Angie here over a cuppa tea."

"Why don't you join us?" asks Mercy. "This particular blend of herbs comes recommended to us by Hanzo. It's quite refreshing."

Tracer says, "The fella's got a bit of a stick up his bum, but he definitely knows how to pick a tea. Comin' from an English girl, that's sayin' something."

"Sure thing," you say. "Just let me grab a sandwich or something from the fridge, I'm starving."

By the time you get back to the table with your sandwich, whatever that odd tension was seems to have dissipated.

Mercy says, "So, Seeker. It seems that one way to stop you getting injured on a mission is to make you sit it out entirely." She smiles. "You're an impressive field agent, but you have to admit, the mission control role is certainly safer."

You say, "It's true that's one easy way to avoid getting shot or beaten up, is to stay the base."

"Hey, he's been doing fine out there," says Tracer. "I'd probably have a lot longer list of injuries than he does already, if I didn't have my rewind to just erase 'em."

Mercy says, "Yes, but that's because as we've discussed, Lena," and here Mercy tries her best to imitate Jack Morrison's gruff delivery, "You're an impulsive, reckless, thrill-seeking daredevil."

"But that's why ya love me so much," says Tracer, grinning.

"Quite so." Mercy smiles as she takes a sip of her tea. "How was it playing mission control for London, Seeker?"

>It was good, actually. I liked it.
>It was tough, but I got through it.
>I was super nervous. I'm just glad it worked out.

"I'm curious, do you see yourself taking more of that role in the future? As I said, you're certainly an impressive field agent, but our team has need of capable tacticians as well."

>Yeah, I think that might work.
>I'll try to balance both.

Then
>I'd prefer to stay in the field.

"When I'm out there in the field, I feel more sure of myself. I know that I can get to someone in need of help before things can take a wrong turn, or to at least keep things from getting worse. Back there, it felt like every single order I made was a gamble; ones I couldn't sway in our favor. I hated feeling like that."
>>
>>1292519
>It was tough, but I got through it.
>I'll try to balance both.
"I'm good on the planning and scheming front, and split second decisions in the action, but I can't help but wonder if we got an actually preemo tactician on staff at the base what that would do for us? Ground control to major Tom and all that.
>>
>>1292519

"Well, it was tough, but I got through it." You hesitate, then admit, "Actually, I was super nervous. I was sweating, my heart rate was through the roof -- it was crazy."

Mercy chuckles. "I didn't need a record of your vitals to guess that one."

"I'm just glad it worked out. The team got a little banged up, but I guess that's to be expected. As long as everyone's still in one piece and on the transport back to the Watchpoint at the end of the day, I call that a win."

"For sure," says Tracer. "Any one you walk away from, right?"

"Right. As for the future, I'll try to balance a bit of both. Sometimes it's probably good to have someone play mission control with the drone cameras and such, but I can help in the field too." You think about it. "I have to say, I like getting my hands dirty. It's fun to get in there, zip around, and mix things up."

"Too right, pal. Fast is where the fun is." Tracer and you high-five.

Mercy shakes her head. "Really, you two are all too similar in some ways."

"Thrill-seeking daredevils?" you say. "Guilty."

Mercy finishes fixing you a cup of the tea. "You two are big tea-drinkers?" you ask as she hands you the cup.

"Well, Angie here is a classy lady of high society," says Tracer. "So of course she'd have a classy, high-society taste in afternoon refreshments. Only the finest teas for her." Tracer extends her pinky to show the fineness of the tea, then grins. "As for me, I'm British. What do you expect?"

"Fair enough."

"We take afternoon tea together when we have the chance," says Mercy. "A shared hobby for us European ladies."

The three of you eat and drink in silence for a few moments. "This is nice," you say eventually. "No global crisis demands our attention. A chance to relax."

Tracer says, "Yeah, guess the world can handle itself for a little while."

Mercy says, "Any estimates on our next excursion?"

"Nothing so far," you say. "Athena hasn't come up with anything yet, and for the moment, at least, the bad guys are quiet. We can just hang out for a while without worrying about terror threats, or some ticking clock or other." You take another sip of the hot tea. "Hey, this is good. You said Hanzo recommended this?"

"He did," says Mercy. "His knowledge of traditional Japanese tea culture is quite impressive."

"Hmm." You take another sip. "His knowledge of how to talk to human beings isn't so impressive. Tracer, you called it when you said he had a stick up his bum. I wonder how we can get him to relax?"

Tracer shrugs. "He seems pretty caught up in his own internal drama, y'know? I mean, I guess that's fair considerin' everything that's happened between him and Genji. I'd probably brood a lot too if I'd killed me own brother, but he came back and forgave me, but I didn't forgive meself, or whatever it is that happened. Plus whatever went down at Shimada castle before you, McCree and me showed up in the knick of time. Did you ever get the story outta either of 'em, how Genji got captured in the first place?"

"Not yet," you say. "I've been thinking I should try to get to know Genji a bit. Maybe I'll ask him."

You watch Mercy leave, then turn back to Tracer. "What was that about?"

"Oh, nothing," Tracer says. "Just a little friendly contest."

The two of you finish off the pot of tea and put the tea set away. Tracer pours herself a nutrient shake, then says, "Hey, um. D'you have any plans for the rest of the afternoon?"

Don't get me wrong here, Lena, I like you, I want to hang out and stuff. But I think this is pretty important for the team, and we've put it off for long enough already."

"Yeah, I getcha. Having only one pilot on the base is a bit of a risky business," she agrees. The two of you start up the stairs to the launch platform. "Wouldn't want ya to be grounded if I wasn't available. At least Athena can fly the Orca with its automated systems, but the Aurora's a bit of a finicky beast. Needs a human touch."

"Right, so we should have at least one other human around with the touch. We can do something casual next time, all right?"

Tracer seems cheered at this prospect. "Yer on, mate."

"For now, learning to fly a jet is excitement enough, I think."

The two of you cross the gangway to the Aurora. "First day sittin' in the pilot's chair," Tracer says. "How d'you feel?"

"It's a bit more complicated than jump boots," you admit. "But I think I can do this. Just hope I don't crash and burn and kill us all, hah hah ..." You swallow nervously, trying not to imagine the Aurora as a flaming wreck.

You strap into the pilot's chair. It feels weird sitting here while Tracer is in your seat -- the co-pilot's chair. You look around at all the buttons. "Yeah, definitely more complicated."

"All right, let's go!" says Tracer, pointing at the ceiling. "Open the hatch and take her away!"

"Wh-what?" you ask, panicking. "I didn't think we were actually going to fly, I thought we were just going to learn the controls, I don't even know how to -- oh." You see a smug grin on Tracer's face. "All right. You got me, I admit it."

"Heh heh heh," chuckles Tracer. "I ain't quite as irresponsible a teacher as that, pal. We've got a simulator installed in the trainin' room, so we can do a few pretend flights first once you've learned the basics. I figured I'd take you up here to go over the controls, though. Help you get a feel for the real thing."

Tracer gives you the basic rundown of how the aircraft works and its controls. She sometimes struggles to express herself. She's the intuitive type who relies on gut feelings, so a concept that comes naturally to her can be difficult to phrase in words and explain.

Overall, though, she does pretty well. She doesn't overlord you with too much information at once, making sure you understand something before moving onto the next part. You feel like you might actually have a shot at this.

Her enthusiasm helps. She clearly feels passionate about not just this aircraft in particular, but flight in general. You remember reading that she already flying for the RAF when she was 18. If she hadn't had her accident, she'd probably still be a full-time pilot, for the military or otherwise.

"Phew," says Tracer. "That's probably enough for now. Don't want to cram your head so full the stuff starts to fall out. You did good, Seeker. Probably better than I did on my first day of training. You've actually got a grain of patience, for starters."

"Thanks," you say. "Doing my best to keep this all straight. Hopefully I remember it for the simulator."

You spend the afternoon in the Forge. As Torbjorn and Brigitte work on repairing Reinhardt's Crusader armor from the blast damage it took in London, you talk to them about the first steps to improving the facility beyond a room to store Brigitte's portable nanoforge.

The two of them can't agree over the exact brand and model of tools to buy -- they each have pretty strong opinions on the matter, in fact -- but they're both on board with your ideas about expanding the base's supply and equipment capabilities.

"Athena's the Overwatch accounting department these days, am I right?" ask Torbjorn. "Has she got more than two sticks to rub together in the bank account?"

"Not really," you admit. "But we're working on it. Got a few ideas on the income situation."

"Feh," grunts Torbjorn. "Well, we until get the resouces, there's only so much we can do here. Fer now we'll keep the team's armor and weapons in fighting shape, at least. I'm a patient man when I have to be." He looks around the room critically with his one eye. "I have big plans fer this place. We can turn it from a closet into a proper Forge. Set up some real equipment in here. Easy to expand if we get hold of an excavator drone."

"One thing at a time," you say. "Let's focus on getting you some better tools and maybe some work assistants."

You say, "Thanks for reparing our stuff. Without you two in here hammering out our weapons and armor, we wouldn't be much of a team."

"Only doing my part," grunts Brigitte as she uses tongs to lower another piece of the Crusader armor into her forge. "Just don't ask me to head out into the field anytime soon. Unlike this lunatic here who's got one too many metal plates in his skull, I'm perfectly comfortable here in the base."

"Feh," scoffs Torbjorn. "If ye can't watch yer own creations in action, what's the point? There's nothing more satisfying fer me than watching one of my turrets turn an Omnic into scrap."

Brigitte works with competency and the sureness of long practice. You wonder how many times she's put the Crusader suit back together. You say to her, "Sorry we got Reinhardt's suit banged up. Again."

"I'm used to it," she sighs. "Just an ordinary day for Brigitte, repair slave."

"Well, you did make my new suit of armor, so that's something to take pride in. I really like it, by the way. Feels good out there. It's even lighter than I thought it would be. So thanks."

"You're welcome," she says. "I'm glad to help. Just try to keep it in one piece next time? Your first mission with it and you blasted the stomach plates into nothing."

"Heh, sorry about that. I'll do what I can. So repairs are fine for now, that's good. What sort of stuff could you do with better tools and equipment?"

"Hard t'be specific on that one just yet," Torbjorn says. "Most of the agents' gear is top of the line. Highly optimized. Real finicky stuff ye can't just swing a hammer at."

"Most of it," agrees Brigitte, getting ready to swing a hammer at a plate of Crusader armor.

"I'm sure we'd come up with something useful, given a little time to experiment," says Torbjorn. "I'm sure the scientists around here will have some ideas. What else are they good for, am I right, Brigitte?"

She chuckles. You guess if there's one thing that engineers can bond over, it's making fun of scientists.

Torbjorn continues, "One thing we could definitely do is turn out new equipment for any soldiers we get to runnin' backup for the agents. Had a decent-sized roster of those back in the day. Just lads and lasses willin' and able to carry a weapon and fight fer the cause. With good tools, a proper fabricatin' station, and some scrap lyin' around, we could fab 'em up some proper rifles and basic armor without any trouble."

"Okay, good to know. Not sure when we'll get the chance to hire guys like that, but maybe someday. I'll have to ask our accountant. Speaking of which ... hmm." You hestitate. This is a bit of an awkward subject. "Torbjorn, I know you're not the greatest fan in the world of Omnics. Or artificial intelligence in general."

"Yer askin' what I think about Athena," he says. "Truth is, much like yer friend with the bird's nest in the server room, I haven't made up my mind yet. There's a lot I don't trust about what goes on under the hood in an Omnic mind. It's all programming a human hasn't understood in decades. And compared to a full artificial intelligence like Athena, well, it's a little like comparing a flashlight to the sun."

"I mean, Winston likes her, right?"

He shakes his head. "That boy would like a shark until it ate him. Too gentle a soul fer this line of work if ye ask me -- that is, unless he gets angry. You still haven't seen him get angry, have ye, kid?"

"Uh, no." The idea of the gentle gorilla scientist acting more than mildly annoyed is hard to imagine.

Torbjorn chuckles. "It's quite a sight to be sure. Anyway, I ain't got any complaints about Athena. She had all these years since the disbandment to try some kind of sinister plan. Instead, so far she's done right by us. So I'll go along with it fer now."

"Good to hear," you say. You're not sure where the team would be without Athena, anyway, so it's good that everyone is on board.

You emerge from the forge, wiping the sweat off your brow. It gets hot in there. One of the first improvements will have to be a better ventilation system.

You head up the road to the patch of grass by the cliff, between the radar station and the comm tower, hoping to catch an ocean breeze. One happens to arrive right as you get there, and you spend a moment enjoying the cool wind rushing past, looking out at the sunset-golden waters of the Mediterranean.

It takes you a bit to realize you're not alone. Genji is sitting perfectly still on a nearby crate, cross-legged with his hands folded in a mudra, those of buddhist meditation gestures. You cough to cover the noise of surprise you were about to make. You console yourself by saying that it's not your fault -- he is a ninja, after all.

"Hey, Genji," you say. "Sorry if I disturbed you."

"It is no trouble," he replies. "I was just ending my meditation for the day." He stands up, and you can faintly hear his cybernetic joints whirring over the sound of the waves below. "It is beautiful here, is it not?" he asks you, still looking out over the sea.

"It is," you agree, looking back to the view. A flock of birds wheels past, the setting sun casting their shadows in the air, their high-pitched cries calling to each other.

"I could never appreciate it before," Genji says. "Too many worldly concerns, as my teacher would say."

"What teacher is that?" you ask. "You have some kind of ninja mentor?"

"Not exactly," he says. "He is a spiritual guide. One of the Shambali. Are you familiar with them?"

"Sort of. I know that guy with the statue in King's Row was their leader, right?" You sigh. "I still feel bad about that statue."

"From what I know of him, Mondatta would not mind that something purely symbolic was broken, as long as the people who live there were saved. The Shambali are an order of Omnic monks, pursuing the path to spiritual enlightenment. I happened to encounter them at a -- a difficult period in my life. One of them consented to become my teacher in their philosophy."

"Interesting. Still, I'm more of a worldly concerns guy myself."

Genji chuckles. "You are yet young. Give it time."

"So, it's been a while since you joined up again. Settling in okay?"

"Indeed. It was strange, at first. The Watchpoint had changed so little, while I had changed so much -- and the team even more so. But I am growing to appreciate our present situation. For starters, it is much quieter than the old days. Easier to find a place to meditate."

"Yeah, that's one bonus of having such a small roster," you say. "I hope soon we have more to work with, though. There's, what, thirteen people here? Ten humans, an Omnic, a Mind, and a gorilla. Not many compared to the old days. At least you brought your brother with you."

You think about Hanzo. The archer has already proven his worth multiple times, both on the battlefield and in his infiltration of London. But that hasn't made him any easier to get along with for anyone.

"He's already a great agent," you say to Genji, "even if he still hasn't officially joined. But, uh ... any suggestions for how to make him chill out a little?"

Genji laughs. "For thirty-five years I have tried and failed to answer that question, Seeker. My brother Hanzo is who he is. Honor and the clan were everything to him. But he left them both behind, many years ago. It will take him some time to find them again. Until then ..." He shrugs. "We must have patience."

"Well, if there's one thing I'm learning about Overwatch, it makes a good home for weirdos and outcasts like you and me. Maybe Hanzo will find his new clan here."

"Perhaps," says Genji.

The two of you watch the sky fade to gold as the sun sinks below the horizon.

(Continued)

>>1295417

Your peaceful interlude with Genji ends abruptly when the two of you arrive at the mess hall for dinner. The cafeteria is already lively.

Cooking tonight is a joint collaboration between Mei and Hanzo, who apparently planned some kind of joint venture of Chinese and Japanese cuisine. That should be fine, you think, right? They both use a lot of rice and soy sauce. What could wrong? Plenty, apparently, since the two of them are facing off in the middle of the kitchen, arguing. It's not a shouting match, just an earnest expression of ideas.

"That much garlic will ruin the flavor!" claims Hanzo. "The ingredients must be allowed to stand on their own strengths!"

"Without the spices it won't balance!" insists Mei. "Don't you know anything about Sichuan cuisine?" Hanzo is pretty intense when he's mad, but Mei is right in his face, holding her ground. You think it's the first time you've seen her stand up for herself. Looks like the girl has a stubborn streak, at least when it comes to food. She stands as firm as a mountain against Hanzo's bluster.

There's enough food already made, so you just quietly slide through. Plenty of people around here are hoping you'll solve their problems, but this is one issue you aren't going to get dragged into. You ladle yourself a big bowl of v-beef and vegetable stew before taking the first available seat you see, which ends up being next to Mercy.

"Hello again," she says. "Those two make for quite the evening's entertainment, wouldn't you say?"

"I just hope they didn't knock over a salt shaker or something into the stew," you say. "How's the food?"

"I'm not experienced with this type of cuisine," she admits. "It's, er, certainly quite a bold flavor."

"I've had a lot of Chinese food over the years, so make way for experience." You take an experimental spoonful. "Hmm. Damn, this is pretty good. Girl knows her Sichuan cooking. I know it can be a little intense, but it grows on you, trust me."

"I shall hope so. Where do you get your experience in Chinese cuisine, Seeker?"

Huh. Hanzo seems to enjoy cooking. Maybe we found something to help get him to relax?

"I spent some time living in China. Used to move all around the Pacific Rim as a kid, actually," you admit, thinking back to the different cities you lived in briefly. "Canada, Singapore, Australia, all over the place. So I had some experience with not only Chinese cooking, but different places' ideas about Chinese cooking. I learned a decent amount about food over the years." You kind of had to, when your parents were mostly gone.

The drones made sure you never went hungry, of course, but their creativity was limited at best. Since you struck out on your own, you often weren't able to afford drones, so your skills were useful. You decide to phrase that a little more positively.

"Cooking's kind of a hobby of mine. Tracer might've told you the story about the nutrient paste, but that wasn't my fault, nobody can make that stuff taste good. One of these nights I'll take a turn in the kitchen and try something with actual food. Then you'll see what I'm really capable of."

You realize Mercy is giving you an odd look. Contemplation, perhaps. "Something on my face, doc?" you ask.

"Just thinking that you're still somewhat of a mystery to us," she muses. "Your agent entry just lists you as Canadian. I didn't realize your upbringing was quite so cosmopolitan. It makes sense, when I think about it. And now I learn you're a cook." Her smile is curiousity with a hint of mischief. "Why don't you tell me something about yourself, Mr. Seeker?"

"Well, I could tell you about ..."

"... my life as an adventurer."

"An adventurer? My goodness. That's a suitably dramatic name for a thief," Mercy says, teasing.

"No, really. Adventurer. I've had two careers before Overwatch, you see.

"You know that before I was with you guys, I was working for some shady people. I had been doing that for a while, it's true. Anti-corporate stuff. Three or four years. But it wasn't always like that.

"When I started out, I was more of an explorer. A treasure hunter, you might say. I didn't have any kind of agenda. I wasn't out to get rich or famous. It was just about the fun of it. The discovery. Me on my own, going places that no-one had been for decades, standing in those forgotten halls." You think back on the strange sights and lost science you've seen. Vast underground colliders, reactors of unfathomable power, gateways to who-knows-where.

"You know a lot of those scientific institutes and tech vaults from the golden age are still locked up, right? The Crisis sent them into alert mode, and nobody has the tech to get through the security systems anymore."

Mercy nods, listening closely.

"Well, there's a few people who do know how to get in. And one of them's me."

Mercy says something amazed in German your translator doesn't catch. "So that's how you got a hold of that Ares equipment."

"Exactly. I needed something of this caliber just to stay alive, you know. Those golden age security drones make for some serious guard dogs. Of course, you have to get past the front door first. And the deathtraps."

"Some squads on the old Overwatch team tried to break into the Longinus Vault a few times, if I recall, with no success. That's quite an impressive feat for you to find your way into such a place. And you say you did this multiple times?"

"Yeah, it was quite a few times in the end. I got into the habit of getting into places I wasn't supposed to be." That's how one job led to another, you think. But you don't mention that to Mercy.

"Interesting." Mercy thinks that over as she takes a small bite of the stew. "That certainly explains some things about your skillset. You have an interesting choice of vocations, Seeker."

"Guess you called it earlier," you say. "Thrill-seeking daredevil and all."

"I sense there's a little more to you than that," says Mercy. "But we'll save the rest of your mysteries for another time. For now, let's finish this excellent stew, shall we?"

As you finish the meal, Mercy suggests a quick systems check of the Caduceus Core, to make sure it's interfacing with your gear's golden age systems correctly. Not wanting your hand to explode when you try your first perfomance test, you agree.

The two of you talk about inconsequential things as Mercy accompanies you to the armory to get your gauntlet, and then out to the medbay to run the systems test. Above in the darkening sky, the first stars are coming out.

On the one hand, I loved the old EU and am pretty pissed off at the nuking it myself. On the other hand, it's pretty obvious Kylo has some serious mental issues, which isn't that crazy given his gramps wasn't exactly a picture of mental stability either. Seriously, there's an article by legit shrinks diagnosing Anakin with Borderline Personality Disorder. Regarding the future movies though, all we can do is wait.

mah n-words. Traitor is legitimately one of my favorite books, and I think Stover did fantastic work with it by fleshing out the universe in an innovative and realistic way and it's a shame lucasarts shit all over that by retconning his work and letting lesser, shittier authors continue on with bullshit jedi space wizard power wankery and tired cliches

Hi, just caught up, and I've been thinking what would happen if there were some crossovers with XCOM in this quest, nothing major or plot focused, more like cameos, jokes, and references. Such as
"HE WAS THREE FREAKING FEET IN FRONT OF YOU HOW DID YOU MISS EVERY SHOT IN YOUR WEAPON!?!?"
