You awaken in darkness, gasping for breath. The air is hot and stifling. You try to move, but your arms and legs are trapped. You're so confined you can barely expand your chest to breathe. All you can do is struggle against the great weight pressing down.

What is this? How did you get here?

The last thing you remember was an ordinary day at school. The bell rang to mark the end of the second class. You were walking down the hall, thinking about lunch. And then ...

... something ...

... happened.

There was light, a strange light. The sensation of falling, plummeting into endless space. The sound of a thousand voices.

And then you were here. Wherever here is.

No time to figure it out. Already your head is swimming. You've got to get out of here, or it’s going to be your grave. You try to shout, to call for help, but you can barely get any air into your lungs. A few pathetic sounds come out, nothing more.

Trapped in darkness, you try to think of something, anything ...

The weight above you shifts. A rush of cool air brushes your cheek, and a beam of light shines through a crack in the darkness. Outside, you can hear voices.

"--telling you, I heard someone," says a girl's voice. "We have to keep looking."

Your chest is burning, but you expand your last breath of air to gasp a cry for help ...

(Continued)

"Did you hear that?" asks the girl. "I knew it! Lift it higher."

"You realize this is heavy, right?" says a boy's voice.

The weight shifts again. The crushing vice is lifted from your chest, and you desperately breathe, feeling the relief of fresh air in your lungs.

The beam of light expands, banishing the darkness. You can see your hands now, dirty and scraped. You look up, half-blinded by the light, and glimpse two figures above you in silhouette. One is kneeling to look down into your crevice. The other is holding up one end of a huge slab of concrete and steel. You realize that was lying on top of you.

"Can't hold this for long," the boy says, straining under the weight. "Get out of there already!"

"Take my hand," calls the girl, reaching out. You reach up, and she takes your hand in a firm grip and pulls. With her help, you start to break free. "Come on," she says, tense with exertion. "Just a little further -- there!"

You emerge from the rubble and crawl away a few feet before collapsing. Your head is pounding, your lungs feel like they're on fire, and you've probably got bruises all over. But you're alive.

"You can let go, Jason," says the girl. "Thanks."

The boy drops the slab, and it crashes to the ground, breaking into smaller pieces. The impact triggers a further shift in the rubble of the destroyed building, crushing the hole you were buried in. Half a wall was lying on top of you, you realize, looking at the rubble of concrete and steel. It's only luck that you weren't pulverized in the impact, or whatever happened. And this boy -- Jason? -- was here to lift that slab off you in time.

>What happened?

Jason and the girl look at each other, then back to you.

"We're still trying to figure that out," says the girl.

"There was some kind of weird light," says Jason. "And voices. And then we were here. Did the same thing happen to you?" he asks you.

You nod, still too dazed to come up with a proper response.

"We can worry about the details later," says the girl. "Right now, we need to look for anyone else who might be in trouble."

"That, and try not to freak out," admits Jason.

"Panic won't help us," says the girl. "We need to stay calm, even though we're ... um ... wherever we are."

You look behind you at the rubble.

>Is that building ... the school?

"Part of it," says Jason. "Looks like we brought a big chunk of B-Wing with us. And the street outside, and the parking lot. I think that's the vice-principal's car over there."

"And the sewer underneath," says the girl. "It's like a big sphere was just ... carved out of existence and brought here."

"Right, so, uh--" Jason hesitates. "Before you look around any more, I gotta warn you. You're about to see something seriously weird."

"Just remember," says Kate. "Don’t panic.”

>What do you mean?

"You wouldn't believe us if we told you," says the girl. "Better if you see for yourself."

>Look around.

You're in a forest. Tall trees stand in all directions. A gentle breeze disturbs a carpet of thick grass. The street and collapsed school occupy a meadow surrounded by the woods. You don't recognize the kind of trees, or any of the strangely-colored flowers, but that's not too weird ... right? It's just an ordinary forest, even though you're not exactly sure where. You'll just get to the nearest phone, call for help, and everything will be fine.

Something seems off, though.

"Look up," suggests Jason.

"Be careful, though," adds the girl.

"Just focus, okay?!" says the girl, grabbing your wrists to stop your flailing. She's got a pretty firm grip for a hot blonde, part of you notes, even as the rest of your brain continues to scream in terror.

"I understand you're freaking out," she continues. "We are too. But I need your help to look for other survivors. There might be others trapped, like you were. We can all freak the hell out later."

"We should look for supplies, too," says Jason. "I don't know where the hell we are, or what we're doing here, or even if it's real. I still kinda think I'm dreaming this. But we should be prepared for the worst. And I, for one, wouldn't mind a granola bar while we try to figure out what the fuck happened."

"Sounds okay to me," says the girl. "Stick with Jason for now, okay? You guys have a look at the cars. I'll check over here."

Jason is peering into the back window of a car, using his hands to shade the window. "This is my Bio 11 teachers' car," he says to you as you approach. "He was a real wilderness freak. Nature trips and stuff. If anyone in the school is gonna have a camping bag or survival kit in their car, it's him. I can't see one in there, though. Might be in the trunk."

He moves around to the trunk, producing a small crowbar from inside his jacket. "Found this little guy earlier, thought it might come in handy. Looks like I'm already right." He tries to pry open the trunk, but can't get a purchase. "Rrrgh -- damn. It's jammed pretty tight."

Jason hands the crowbar to you. "Here, can you pry? I'll pull from the other side. Maybe together we can get it open."

You jam the crowbar into the gap under the trunk door. Working in tandem with Jason, you manage to get it open without too much of sweat.

"Nice," he says. "I was totally right. He's got a wilderness survival kit in here. Probably got energy bars, a blanket, matches, maybe even some flares -- good shit."

>Gained Survival Kit x1

A sudden dizziness attacks you, and you're forced to sit down on a flat rock behind you. You notice a sharp pain in your side. It's been steadily increasing, actually, now that you think about it, it's just the adrenaline of fear was helping you not to think about it.

"Hey, what's wrong?" asks Jason. "Are you all right?"

The girl hurries over. "What's up?"

You touch your side where the pain is, and your fingers come away sticky. You look at them to see them stained red with your own blood.

"Shit, I didn't realize you were hurt," says Jason.

"Stay there and I'll patch you up, okay?" says the girl.

She sits down on the rock next to you and starts to dig through her purse, putting aside items she doesn't need right now -- makeup, a wallet, sunglasses. All things that would have seemed vital to her life barely an hour ago.

The girl takes out a small sewing kit with spools of red, blue, and black thread. "Here we go. It's no first aid kit, I know, but it's the best we've got right now." She manages a shaky smile. "Any color preference?"

"Blue it is," says the girl, taking out the blue spool of thread and a sewing needle.

>Slowly pull up your shirt, look away bashfully (9)

Carefully, trying to avoid your injury, you pull up your shirt, exposing your midriff. Sweat from exertion glistens on your skin, a single bead running down your obliques. You look away from the girl, trying to hide the flush of embarassment on your cheeks from revealing yourself to someone you barely know like this.

"H-hold still, okay?" the girl says. You sneak a quick glance at her. She seems affected by the situation too. She tries to concentrate on getting ready to sew up your wound, but can't help looking at your bare stomach. She shakes her head a little and renews her determination. "All right, here I go. This might sting. I haven't done this in a long time."

The needle does sting, a little bit, but not that much. You feel the girl's fingers on your skin as she works delicately.

"I remember seeing you in the halls, but we've never really had a chance to talk. This isn't the best time or place for it, I guess, but ... better late than never, right?"

>Do you come here often?

That forces a wry smile out of her. "No, this is my first time to ... whatever this is. Weird forest land."

>What do you think happened?

"I seriously have no idea. Maybe ... we got kidnapped? That would explain why we lost consciousness and ended up here." She looks up. "Of course, that doesn't explain the giant blue planet in the sky."

While Kate tends to your wound, Jason finishes looking through the cars and going through the supplies he's found. "I looked through that survival kit," he says, returning. "Found some other things that might be useful as well. Got a bag for everyone." He drops a trio of school backpacks at his feet, half-full with looted supplies. "How's the medical procedure, Nurse Kate?"

"Fine," says Kate.

Jason grins and says to you, "I hope you're enjoying having the hottest senior in the school give you her undivided attention."

Kate scowls at him.

"You're a year below us in school, right?" Jason asks you. "You're ... um ..." He looks at Kate.

"The transfer student?" she prompts, rolling her eyes.

“Right,” he says, snapping his fingers. “Of course. The new kid. Well, most days at our school are pretty normal. We don't usually, uh, mysteriously end up in another world. Anyway, I found some useful stuff. Food, camping supplies, things like that."

"Hopefully we won't need any of that," says Kate. "I'm sure we'll be ... you know. Rescued."

"Yeah, I'm sure you're right. This is probably just some weird forest with a ... a hologram in the sky or something. The government or whoever will track us down. Or we'll wake up and none of it was real. In the meantime, though, I'm trying to prepare for whatever happens."

"Sounds good to me," says Kate. "All right, I'm finished. You can lower your--"

A sudden clattering sound comes from a piece of the school -- a different one than the pile of rubble you were buried under. This one is a relatively intact chunk of hallway.

"What was that?" asks Kate, gripping the back of your shirt tightly.

Jason steps between you two and the noise, readying his crowbar. "Stay behind me," he says quietly, then raises his voice. "Who's there?! Show yourself!"

After a few moments, a male voice replies. "All right. I'm coming out. But keep that crowbar to yourself for now."

A skinny boy with bushy hair and black-framed glasses steps forward from the shadowed doorway. He's carrying a knife, but keeping it low, and not making any sudden movements. "There's no need for threats," he says, his voice even and controlled. Behind his glasses, his eyes move back and forth between the three of you, evaluating.

Fears flash through your mind -- what if he's crazy? what if he attacks with that knife? what if he's an alien shapeshifter? -- but you manage to keep your cool. Surely he's just another kid from the school, transported here by whatever force brought the three of you here.

"What are you doing here?" demands Jason.

"I haven't the faintest idea," the boy says. "And I'd guess you haven't either. You saw the lights too, correct?"

"Um ..." Jason looks back at Kate, then at you, for support.

"Are you alone?" asks Kate.

The boy hesitates, then says, "No. There's a girl here. I think she's hurt. I don't know how to help her."

"I can try to help her," says Kate.

"Are you a trained first aid responder, then?"

"Lifeguard," she says, shrugging.

"I suppose that will have to do." The boy in glasses steps back. "She's inside."

Kate goes in to the fragment of school to check on the girl. You go to follow her, but Jason stops you. "Hold on a second." He turns to the new boy. "What's your deal, huh?"

"I could ask you the same thing," he replies with a frosty stare.

Jason looks like he's about to argue, then relents. "All right, I guess that's fair. Me and Kate woke up in the woods out there. Found the new kid in the rubble. That's basically it. What about you?"

"I just came to a few minutes ago. I came across the girl, unconscious on the ground. I tried to revive her, with no success. Then I heard you outside. After observing, I knocked over that rock to alert you to my presence."

"Why'd you wait?" asks Jason. "Why not call out to us right away?"

"The girl is defenseless. I had to try and ascertain your ... attitudes first. I wouldn't be physically capable of defending her against all three of you. Some sorts of people would take advantage of such a situation." He pushes his glasses up, the light reflections obscuring his eyes for a moment. "I'm taking a chance that you're not those sorts. I hope, for her sake, that I'm right."

"Hey, come on," grumbles Jason. "I just lifted that rock off you, remember? Let's have a little more gratitude and hero worship, shall we?"

>Where did you find that knife?

"It was on the floor," he says. "I think it might have come from one of the lockers that were only partially transported. There's always at least one kid who keeps knives in their locker, right?"

>Drop the knife before we talk

"I'd quite like to hang onto it, but I see your point. Holding weapons puts a strain on conversation, doesn't it? I'll put the knife away, fair compromise?" He tucks it into his belt.

Jason shrugs and puts the crowbar back in his jacket. "Sounds okay for now."

>What do you remember?

"The end of second period," he says quietly. "I was walking to return a book to the school library ... when ..." He trails off. "I'm afraid I find myself without words to describe it."

"A weird light, yeah?" says Jason. "And voices."

"Something like that," says the boy. "Although I find "voices" an awfully inadequate word for that inhuman choir."

The three of you stand over Kate and the other girl, lying on her back, a small girl with waves of dark hair and a pair of headphones around her neck. Her eyes are closed, and she's breathing peacefully.

"I don't understand," admits Kate. "She seems fine, but she's not waking up. I'm not sure what--"

Suddenly the girl starts to quake. Her limbs shake, like she's having a seizure. Her eyelids open, but her eyes are rolled back in their sockets, exposing a blank white. "The queen!" she shrieks. "The nightmare queen! The eyes -- eyes in my mind -- too many -- want to eat -- aaaaAAAGH!!"

"Keep her held down!" shouts Kate, pinning one arm to the ground as the girl thrashes. You grab the other by the wrist and hold it down, fighting your fear.

Through the contact between your skin, you feel something strange reach out to you from the girl ...

>(Dark) See something weird
>10

A bizarre coldness envelops your arms, as though you'd plunged them into ice water. The cold races up your nervous and into your brain. A flash of sensations assault you, too fast to understand. Your mind threatens to dissolve under the pressure, but part of you stays coherent, and you catch glimpses, images--

An ancient shadow, lurking in the depths of a vast hall.

A mind of incredible power, reaching out to the stars.

A chorus of corrupted angels, singing of hatred and discord.

A shard of darkness, falling in flames through the sky like a meteor.

A planet being torn apart by vast, unknowable forces.

You feel something. A darkness, like stormclouds blotting out the sun. It's searching for you. Dimly aware of your connection to your body, you force yourself to let go of the girl's arm, and your connection to that and the darkness passes over you. You have the feeling you just avoided something ... unpleasant.

You snap back to reality, to the shadows and broken concrete of the hallway fragment. You look around, quickly. You're not sure if the others noticed you spacing out there.

What the hell was that?

As suddenly as it started, it's over. The girl relaxes. She blinks a few times, and her eyes roll back to normal, slowly focusing. "What ... what was I ...?" She turns to look at you, right as her vision returns. Her eyes widen in surprise. "Oh! Umm -- what happened? Who are you? W-w-where am I?"

The girl lets out a nervous, unsure laugh. "Narnia? What do you mean? D-d-did I step through the wardrobe?" She pushes herself up to a sitting position, rubbing her head.

>I don't know.
>We're still working that out.
>From what we've seen so far, you're not going to like it.

"Oh ..." She looks past the group, down the hallway fragment, at the world outside. "I guess it was too much to hope for a nice, peaceful fantasy world, huh?"

"I mean, we don't know that it's not," says Kate. "Maybe Mr. Tumnus will come strolling around the corner any minute now."

"Somehow I have my doubts," mutters the boy with glasses.

>Are you okay?

"I-I'm fine ... I think? I seem to be fine."

>What was that you were saying? Who's this "nightmare queen"?

"I ... what?" She looks at you, puzzled. "A queen?"

"You were shaking around and saying some stuff," says Jason. "Something about a queen, and eyes?"

"I'm not sure ... I think it was ..." The girl's dark eyes flit back and forth, searching for a memory. "No, I can't remember. It's gone. Like a dream."

Kate says "Jason, you found a flashlight, right? Can you bring me one?" He does so. "Okay, look at me for a second, um -- sorry, what's your name?"

"S-Samantha," says the girl. "Sam."

"Okay, Sam. Just look into the light for a second." Kate shines the light briefly into each of Sam's eyes, then turns it off and shrugs. "Huh. Pupil response seems normal. I guess she's okay."

Jason reaches out his hand. "Here. You can try standing up, if you're ready."

Sam grabs his hand with both of hers, and with his help, she gets to her feet. She looks down, clearly feeling awkward at being the center of attention. "W-w-what's outside?"

"It looks like a forest," says Jason. "That's not the weird part, though, sad to say."

"Just remember," says Kate. "Don't panic."

One panic later ...

"It's okay," says Kate, her arm wrapped around Sam's shivering shoulders.

"It's not okay," mumbles Sam. The dark-haired girl is sitting on the flat rock seat, curled up into a ball with her arms around her knees, Kate sitting beside her.

"It's no big deal," says Kate. "We all freaked out a little when we saw that thing in the sky, didn't we?"

"I sure as hell did," says Jason. "No shame in admitting that." You nod in agreement.

The four of you look at the boy in glasses. He shrugs. "Not really."

"Pfft. Look at Mr. Cool Guy over here," says Jason.

"I'm more interested in the obvious questions," he says, pushing his glasses up. "For example, what kind of atmospheric composition are we breathing right now? It's probably a nitrogen-oxygen blend similar to Earth, but perhaps higher in oxygen saturation. I suspect we're under a slightly lower atmospheric pressure, so that would make sense."

"Uh ..." says Jason. He looks at Kate, who shrugs.

"Don't look at me," she says. "I had to repeat Science 10."

Sam says, "I've read science fiction books, but th-this is hardly the same thing. You really th-think we're not on Earth, huh?"

The boy shrugs. "It seems obvious to me. It's only speculation for now, of course, but it's clearly supported by the evidence. I have a number of other hypotheses -- a virtual simulation, perhaps -- but exoplanet is the main one."

"Hey, come on," says Jason. "Maybe that -- that thing in the sky is just a hologram or something. Some weird space gas is reflecting Jupiter into the sky. Makes more sense to me than saying we're on an alien planet or whatever crazy shit."

"That's definitely not Jupiter," says the boy. "Or Saturn, or any other planet in Earth's solar system. Also, there are several other supporting facts. Have you noticed that the gravity here is less than that of Earth? I would estimate, mmm ... about seven meters per second squared?"

Kate laughs. "Now I remember you. You're the kid who scores highest in our grade every year, right? Tyler something?"

The boy quirks half a smile. "Tyler something, yes."

"Didn't you skip a year? You're on some kind of accelerated program?"

"Yes. Two years." Tyler runs a hand through his bushy hair. "I'm, uh, sixteen."

>Wow, that's pretty cool.
>What a nerd.
>We're really on some other planet?

You don't say anything, for now. They don't need to know your troubles.

"Should we take a minute to introduce ourselves properly?" asks Kate.

"Yeah, I guess so," says Jason. "We all go to the same school, but don't exactly run with the same crowd."

"Okay, um. I'll start, I guess," Kate says. She waves awkwardly to the group. "Hi, I'm Kate. I'm just, you know. A normal girl. I live with my parents in Holly Hill. I used to be on the volleyball team, but I had to quit when I got a part-time job. When I was a kid I wanted to be a veterinarian, but now I'm, um, not sure. That's all, I suppose."

"She makes herself sound boring," says Jason. "But she's actually cool. She's the hottest girl in school, but she's turned down everyone who's ever asked for a date. Most of the guys in our grade, and a lot of the girls too. How badass is that? Probably has a boyfriend in college--"

"Jason," hisses Kate. "I do not. Have. A college boyfriend."

"Shit, sorry," he says, putting his hands up. "Just joking. Anyway, yeah, uh. I'm Jason. You probably know me if you watched any of the football games last year or the year before ... no?"

Tyler and Sam both look at each other. Tyler smirks, and a small smile shows on Sam's face. "I th-th-think we're both not really the athletic types."

"Damn," Jason says, and laughs. "Well, I guess that's fine. My dad's in the army. I've been in cadets since I was twelve. Boy scouts before that. Of course ..." He shakes his head. "Never mind. That's all."

He looks at Tyler, who shrugs. "I'm already done."

"Pfft. Fine, try your best to be mysterious or whatever," says Jason.

"What about you, Sam?" asks Kate. "Anything you can tell us about yourself?"

"Not really," she says. "I'm n-n-not very popular. I just go to school and go home. I watch cartoons and read comics and stuff. I play board games with a group of boys on the weekend, but that's about it."

"I think I know the guys you mean," says Kate. "Geez, how is it hanging out with them? Doesn't the smell drive you away?"

Sam smiles shyly. "Th-they're kind of annoying, but they're the only ones in school who play nerd stuff. I think they're okay."

"That just leaves you, right?" says Kate, turning to you. The four others look at you as well. "We don't know much about you, just that you transferred here a few months ago. What was your life like at your other school?"

Sorry for the delay here. I've had to be working on RL stuff instead of the next update.

Welcome back. I was getting worried that you's left us.

You tell the others a little about yourself. You don't mind sharing. Truth be told, you like to put yourself out there. Just a little.

You tell the group about yourself and the group at your old school. About the intense friendships, the artistic endeavours and collaborations, the late nights at parties and concerts and just staying up discussing the universe. You talk about how hard it was to leave them all behind.

You skirt the dirty details of the drama, not bringing up how broken promises turned to vengeance, or love became cruelty. You don't mention how, when it all fell apart, leaving everything behind was maybe the best thing that could've happened.

At the tender age of seventeen, you've already loved, and been loved, and gotten hurt because of it. But you're not about to let that stop you. Some people out there need to be loved. It's not that you're one of them or anything, you just. You know. Want to make them feel good about themselves. That's all.

"I'm Vanessa," you say, starting to overcome your shyness as you get to know these people. "I hope we can all get along." You give them a smile as you brush a lock of your perpetually messy hair behind your ear, then fold your small hands in your lap. It's not just to look prim -- it's to keep them from twisting around each other with fear.

"So you're the artsy type, huh? Hang out with the bands and stuff?" Jason says. "That makes sense. Not exactly sure how useful that will be out here -- wherever we are. But the more cuties the better, if you ask me."

"Give the poor girl a break, Jason," says Kate. "She just had half a school wall dropped on her, she doesn't need you hitting on her."

"What, I can't say she's cute? Come on." Jason's look of bewilderment makes Sam giggle.

"Anyway," says Kate, "It's nice to be properly introduced, Vanessa."

"S-s-same here," says Sam. "I th-think I saw you at the concert the other night? That was cool and, um ... yeah ..." She trails off.

Tyler isn't even looking at you, or at anyone -- he's got his head titled back to look up at the sky.

"Tyler?" prompts Kate. "Want to say something nice to our transfer student?"

"It's getting dark," he observes instead. "Wherever we are, it seems to have rotation, giving it a day-night cycle. I've been trying to gauge the speed, and I believe it's slightly shorter than Earth's. I'll be interested to see if it interacts with the planet we're orbiting in some way."

"I'm sorry, this is relevant how?" Kate asks.

"It's relevant in that many Earth predators are noctural," he says.

"Oh. Right. Yeah."

"I propose we take shelter here, perhaps in these cars," Tyler continues. "I don't trust the structural integrity of these pieces of our school. In the morning, we can decide on a long-term plan of action."

"Sounds okay to me," says Sam.

Jason shakes his head. "We should get away from here. We don't know who -- or what -- brought us here. They could be hostile. In fact, if anything turns out to be hostile, it'll probably be coming straight for here. We probably made a lot of noise ... arriving. However that happened. Anyway, we're better off finding someplace nearby to bivouac."

Kate thinks about it. "I'm not sure ... when the rescue party shows up-- we'd want to know about it, right?"

Tyler tsks. "If, you mean. And I wouldn't hold my breath for that."

"WHEN the rescue party shows up," Kate emphasizes, "We'd want to know about it, right?"

Jason suggests, "We can stay within eyeshot of this location. We should set a watch through the night anyway. Whoever's up can keep an eye on here."

"Then I guess I agree. Of course, that leaves us tied two to two." Kate looks at you. "What do you think?"

"I think we should stay here for now," you say. "Who knows what's out there? We can get our bearings in the morning."

Jason looks like he's about to argue, then stops. "Fine. Guess we'll try democracy, then. We should stay close together in case something happens." He looks around the chunk of parking lot. "Ideally we'd each have our own car, but we should stay close together in case something happens. Can you three girls squeeze into that minivan? Me and Tyler will take the sedan next to it."

"Sounds good to me," Kate says. She grins as she looks at you and Sam and gives a lame attempt at a cheer. "Girls' night, woooo."

"I hope you don't snore," mutters Tyler as he gets up.

Jason claps him on the back, a physical contact he looks entirely uncomfortable with. "I guess we'll find out together, buddy. First, though, let's set up the watch shifts."

Kate says, "How should we decide what order we go in?"

"Hang on," says Sam. She goes diving in that big black bag of hers. "I've got some dice." She produces a smaller cloth bag from inside -- also black -- and pulls out a handful of dice of different shapes, sizes and colors. She picks out an ordinary six-sided die from among the colorful polyhedrons. "Okay, first watch is one, second is two ... if you get six, just, you know. Ignore it."

You end up with three. "Sorry," says Sam, shrugging. "Somebody's gotta take the middle shift, I guess. I'll be right before you, so I guess we'll see each other tonight. Don't be late, okay?"

"This is like camping!" you say spiritedly. You always liked camping. "It's great to get all your friends together out under the stars in nature, right?"

"Right!" says Kate. "Of course! This is just like camping. In, you know. A strange forest. With a giant planet in the sky overhead." She laughs nervously. "Nothing to worry about."

As Sam puts her dice back in the bag, you go over to her, looking at the colorful shapes with interest. "What are all those dice for, Sam?"

She shrinks back. "Oh, um, i-i-it's for my game ... that I play ... it's pretty nerdy, you probably don't want to hear about it ..."

"Sure I do!" you say. "Right now we should probably help everyone get set up, but you can tell me about it later, okay?"

"O-okay, if you say so ..." Sam turns away in shyness, but you think you caught sight of a smile before then.

(Continued)
>>
Kate drops off to sleep fast. She seems like she's got a sensible head on her shoulders, isn't letting all this get her too upset. Either that or she's just a dumb blonde. You listen to her quiet breathing as you stare up at the ceiling of the minivan, unable to sleep.

This is too much craziness for anyone to deal with, you think. You'd always had fantasies about going on a magical journey to another realm. Any girl who's ever read a book about a unicorn has. But actually living it? Being ripped away from your home and thrust into a world you don't understand? That's something entirely different.

The silence and mystery of the whole thing is getting to you. It's almost worse than if you were attacked by weird monsters, right from the get-go. Evil spirits, aliens, whatever. At least then you'd know this was a world with monsters, instead of fearing it.

What is this place? What could have brought you here? Why did it take a big chunk of the school and street with it? Is the forest safe? Will something try to kill us? Can we eat anything here, or is it all poison? Can we get along with each other, or will we turn on each other? Will we be rescued, or left stranded here for the rest of our lives?

Your brain goes around and around with questions. You don't sleep a wink before it's time for your shift on watch duty.

Quietly, taking care not to wake Kate, you slide open the door to the van and step down into the thick grass. As you head to the "sitting rock" you hear voices, and realize that Tyler is awake and talking with Sam.

"--try your best, that's all," you hear him saying. "It's the only source of information we have. You're a smart girl. You understand what kind of situation we're in."

"I d-d-don't think I do, though. I don't think I understand anything about what's happened to us--"

You accidentally step on a twig with a loud snap. Sam leaps into the air like a startled rabbit, although Tyler just casually glances in your direction, then away again. "Good evening, Vanessa. Here for your watch shift, I take it?"

"Yep," you say. "What are you two talking about?"

"Plans for the future," he says. "I thought I'd discuss it with Sam here, since I couldn't sleep. Turns out that Jason does, in fact, snore." He looks in your direction. "I hope you don't believe that nonsense those two were spooning you."

"What's that?"

His gaze bores into you with a cold intensity. "About rescue. About hope. It's not going to happen. Those two, Jason and Kate? They aren't ready to face reality. We need to accept our situation. The sooner we start to adapt, the better."

>You're wrong. I know we'll be rescued.
>I'm sure we'll be rescued ... probably ... somehow.

"Maybe you're right," you say. "This is a pretty messed-up situation. I don't think we can count on a rescue service helicopter showing up over the treetops. If it was a forest on--" (on Earth, you're about to say, but instead say) "--in North America, then maybe I'd be more optimistic. But we don't even recognize any of these plants. We have no idea where the hell we are. So, yeah. We need to figure things out here. For now, at least."

"I'm glad you agree, even if conditionally." Tyler sighs and holds his forehead in his hand for a moment. "I'm tired. Perhaps with rest I'll be able to analyze this situation more effectively. I'm going to see if one of these other cars is open. Good night, Vanessa, Sam," he adds, nodding to each of you, then heading off into the darkness.

"He wasn't trying to perv on you or anything, was he?" you ask Sam, sitting on the rock beside her.

"No," she says. "J-j-just what he said to you. Trying to convince me not to wait for rescue. And, um. He asked me about the stuff I was saying earlier. You know. When I was screaming." She laughs nervously. "I th-think he was hoping I'm some kind of oracle, like I had a prophetic vision or something."

"Did you?" you ask gently.

"I don't know," she says. "I can barely remember. Maybe I did? It wouldn't even be the weirdest thing that's happened to me today, after all."

"Back then, when I touched you ... I saw something." You hesitate, then tell her about your vision. The strange flashes of images and sounds, darkness and chaos. How you felt something like a malevolent presence, and just barely escaped its notice.

"That's pretty messed up," Sam says. "I'm not sure if I saw anything like that. There was definitely a darkness? And, like ... space? And maybe ... a crown?"

"A crown?" you ask. "I don't remember anything like that."

Sam shrugs. "Well, it's probably just some weird hallucination, right? Whatever happened to us just gave us a little brain glitch. Probably after a good night's sleep we'll be fine. Speaking of which--"

You grin. "Yeah, okay. I'm here. Go on back to the van, try to get some rest."

"Thanks." Sam gets up and goes to leave.

"Hey," you say, stopping her. "What did you think about what Tyler said? About being rescued."

"I ..." she shrugs. "I kind of agree with him. What he says makes sense. There's nowhere on Earth that has less gravity, or plants like these, or a big gas giant in the sky. Even the stars are different, see? I used to look at constellations and stuff and, um, there aren't any. It's a totally different sky."

"Damn," you say, looking up. That huge planet is still up there. "Maybe he's right. He seems like he's pretty smart. He's cold, too, but I guess that's just how he is."

"Yeah."

"All right. Good night, Sam. I'll see you tomorrow."

"Good night, V-v-vanessa."

You let out a huge yawn as you settle down on the sitting rock. You're so exhausted that even the fear of an unknown forest shrouded in darkness can't stop you from feeling sleepy. Only a few hours of watching before you can get back in the van. Just don't fall asleep, you think. Just don't ... fall ... *yawn* ...

You wake up, covered in sweat, your heart pounding in your chest.

What the fucking fuck was that? Holy shit ...

Shuddering, you curl up into a ball on the rock, holding your knees, and wait for daylight. Trying not to think about planets in the sky, or dark halls, or giant shadows, or crowns.
