Dice system: rolls are all d10's. 8, 9, and 10 are successes. Unless stated otherwise on the sheet, 10's and only 10's explode into additional dice (this is called 10-again). Willpower is spent to increase a roll by 3 dice.

Friday, July 8, 1977. 10 AM. Portland.

"What do you mean, 'I'm fired'?"

"I mean you're fired, Jerry." Conrad puts out his cigarette on the cafe table at which you are both seated. "You aren't our street guy anymore; at least, not by obligation."

"You can't just do tha-"

"Actually, I think I can. You see, you swore an oath to me, which means that I can rescind the oath whenever I feel like. Besides, it's not my call to make. Got some mail today-" Conrad holds up a brown envelope- "All the way up from the Horned King himself. He says you're out."

You clench your left hand into a fist. This is horseshit. You've been keeping a finger on the pulse of the city for the past three months for the Autumn Court, ever since you volunteered to take the place of their previous spy, and now Conrad thinks he can just cut you loose like this? Who does he think he is?
>No way in Hell. I refuse.

>(Punch him in his ET face)

>Show me the damn letter.

>What did I do? I've been sending everything you want to you. You can't just sack someone without an explanation.

"Show me the damn letter, Conrad." You snatch the envelope out of his hands without waiting for a response and flick it open. the letter inside is written on musty paper with suspicious stains, in a spiky script:

"Conrad,

It has come to my attention that Jerry Woodheart has done an impressive service to the Kingdom of Portland- one which deserves acknowledgement. And yet, you seem content to keep him living on the street, caked in filth and stink, and, furthermore, keep him there in perpetuity. Do not deny this, Conrad: I have seen into your dreams, as is my right. I have tolerated you cowardice thus far, but no further. Remove your obligation from him and give him an identity more stable than the one he has now. I shall send you another candidate in due time. It is not fit to squander a man of Woodheart's talent in such a lowly position. He must be given room to grow. I need not say what I will do if you are defiant."

The letter is unsigned.

"This doesn't sound like a 'firing', Conrad..."

Conrad throws his hands into the air. "Firing, promotion- whatever. Here's your papers." He reaches into his coat and tosses a binder at you from across the table. "Congratulations, Mr. Derwaldt: you live in a basement apartment in Mt. Tabor, near the park. Keys are in the binder, place is stocked. If I see you trying to use the backdoor of the Peculiarum again, I WILL shoot you with iron-filing shot. And if you think you can come running to me next time you get your stupid ass in the middle of a fire, you can pound salt instead."

"Don't you think you're overreac-"

"NO. You've put all of us at risk with your need to do this grandstanding hero shit, and we didn't get anything out of it. That nutcase went to Spring."

>(Expression) We got our pride.

"Calm down, Conrad. I beat that Gentry fair and square. There's nothing he can do to us now."

Conrad jabs a long, nail-less finger at you. "How the Hell can you know that, Jerry? Huh? The Gentry, they don't play by any rules besides their own, and they change those rules whenever they feel bored."

"Conrad, you can't be seriously callous enough to sell someone back into bondage for a measure of safety-"

"That's where you're wrong. We didn't owe that man shit. Hell, he didn't even think he was free in the first place!"
Conrad puts his head down and takes a deep breath. "Look. You're trying to be a good person. I can respect that. But we don't have the luxury of charity down here. You've put the entire freehold- over 3,000 Lost over the entire state- at risk for one guy. Is that WORTH it to you?"

Besides, wasn't Conrad one of the people who went bleeding-heart and supported our zany scheme earlier? Why's he backpedaling now if it went well and it was something we did so the Gentry couldn't just up and walk over us like they own everything?

Being mad is one thing if he wasn't in support of it and it went poorly. However, it sounds like he's just trying to fix his wounded pride at this point by making it sound like we didn't deserve the Horned King's favor.

"-Because you're a hypocrite as well as a coward, right? Unwilling to put your own neck out for others, but fine with other people doing it for you."

Conrad opens his mouth, closes it, and breaks eye contact with you. The hot flush of shame briefly turns his grey skin a near-human shade.

"...I release you from your obligations."

You feel the oath unravel around you, like a spider spinning its web backwards.

Hilltop Apartments, 11:30 AM.

The first thing you notice about the apartment, as you walk down the stairwell and head through the door, is its lack of windows. The entire basement level seems to have no source of natural lighting, and is slightly damp. The second thing is that you've been to this apartment complex before. The Door Man lives on the top floor of the perilously looming, curiously Gothic building. There's probably a story here, but you aren't that interested in it right now.

You have a couple chairs, a sofa, a TV, a kitchen table, a stovetop oven, a microwave, a fridge, a sink, an elderly lamp, and a couple bookshelves. One of them is empty, and the other has a statue of some kind on it, with a folded paper beneath. A brief investigation shows that you also have a bedroom and a bathroom, thankfully. The sole, bare bulb in the main room casts everything in a bleary light.

Changelings never leave gifts to each other in obvious places, and the same holds for traps. In either case, looking around is the only sensible thing to do.

You find a snowflake cut into the underside of a drawer in the kitchen: this place used to be a Winter Cottage, one of the shelters of the Silent Arrow, at some point. It probably had been played out and put on the market: Lost gossip said that no Winter Cottage would ever play host to more than 13 Lost before it would be abandoned for 13 years. Probably a romanticization of the practice, but you'd rather believe that was the reason instead of the alternative.

A loose brick in the bedroom wall exposes a small tin mint case with the slight glitter of fae workmanship on it. The front is decorated with the image of a grinning cartoon devil wearing a powdered wig and ruff, holding a skull in one hand and resting another on a globe. The globe's continents seem to have no correlation to our own. The overlaid text says "DOCTOR BARKER'S ENLIGHTEN-MINTS! MADE WITH REAL PHILOSOPHERS!*" Apparently,
these are "RATIONALIST"-flavored.

An annotation says "2% BY VOLUME. KNOWN SIDE EFFECTS INCLUDE PREOCCUPATION WITH METAPHYSICS, INSISTENCE ON AN OBJECTIVE UNIVERSE, RADICAL SKEPTICISM, AND/OR NEOPLATONIC DELUSIONS. TAKE NO MORE THAN THREE IN ONE SITTING. MANUFACTURED IN A FACILITY THAT ALSO CONTAINS NUTS."

You pop the tin open: there are eight mints inside, with remarkably-accurate portraits of Rene Descartes chiseled on them. You pocket the tin.

Finally, you head over to the shelf. There's a small golden statue of a pair of hands, with manacles on the wrists. The chain between the manacles has been shattered, and the hands are posed thumbs together, palms out and fingers spread. The letter beneath says "THANK YOU. I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD BE FREE AGAIN. PLEASE TAKE THIS AS A TOKEN OF MY APPRECIATION."

"...ing to an increase in tensions. Turning to local news: the Maxmart corporation has announced the opening of their first Oregon location in the town of Boring, just 20 miles outside of Oregon! In a public statement, the CEO of Maxmart's parent company, Fairweather Industries, claimed that the opening will add over three hundred jobs to the local economy."

The footage cuts to a man in a crisp suit, with boyish, tousled blonde hair, severe good looks, and eyes so green that they're almost emerald. The undertitle states that this is "Jacob Fairweather, CEO, Fairweather Industries". "Maxmart is always excited to add new members to our family, and, hopefully, the people of Boring will be equally excited to join us, whether as employees- who benefit from full health insurance coverage, special discounts on all products sold at Maxmart or at her sister chains, Maxmed and Maxauto, and automatic pay raises every three months for their first year- or as customers, who I gaurantee will not find better prices anywhere else." Fairweather melodramatically throws up his hands. "What the heck! I'm the CEO around here! New Maxmart Policy: If You Find A Better Price Anywhere Else, Show It To A Manager And We'll Beat It!"

"Well, Barbara, that certainly seems like a generous offer!"

"You can say that again. Next up: a parrot- that can waterski!"

You switch over to the Public Broadcast channel and start watching a nature documentary. Something about that Fairweather guy seemed... familiar...

You remember rushing through trackless woods, in and out of pathways and hedgerows. You knocked several people over, goblins and bogeys traveling on their own way. Fairweather... Fairweather was one of them, you're sure of it. Same haircut, same sharp looks. The only difference was the eyes, they were so much GREENER in person. Or... wait, can that be right? Huh.

You relax to the sounds of the nature documentary...

You jerk awake several hours later. God, you must have fallen asleep. Not enough to get a full eight hours, but it's nice to have been able to relax in an actual chair for a while. You look at the clock over the stove: it's 1:30 PM.

Lemongrass Residence, Beaverton West, OR. 1:30 PM.
It would have been nice if your apartment had come with a car. You're just lucky Beaverton and Portland's urban transports overlap with one another.

The area Rainshadow Lemongrass (hell of a name: gives you some flashbacks to the old days) lives in is a clear hippy neighborhood: wind chimes, dream catchers, prayer flags, and other fringe religion paraphernalia hang from the arbors, and many of the people you spot on the street are either decked out in tie-dye shirts with complicated cloaks or JUST clothed enough to avoid arrest for indecent exposure. Half-naked children romp through cluttered, overgrown lawns. Some of the residents wave as you walk by:
"What's the haps, old-timer?"

"Not much, not much."

"Need some new threads? I've got some, I'll give them to you! You need them more than I do!"

"Thank you, but I couldn't impose on you like that."

The Lemongrass house is a one-story bungalow with tiles falling off of the roof and a haphazard technicolor paint job. The porch is thick with various talismans from a dozen different belief systems, and you can spot an icon of Mary, a statue of one of those Hindu gods, the elephant-headed one, and some kind of heathen shrine in the yard. You can see a gathering of people around the back: you shuffle through the weeds to join them.

The people look like a fairly diverse bunch: pensioners, middle managers, local types, and even some of the local homeless. They're all seated cross-legged in front of an elevated stone platform. Rainshadow is seated on top of it.

His hair comes down to his ass in a straight golden sheet: two strands of it spill down his shoulders and almost rest in his lap as he's seated, flanking a beard whose single knot rests where his ribs meet at the center of his chest. His frame is toned: not muscular, exactly, but with the definition of someone who gets frequent exercise. A pair of round glasses frame his eyes and make him look like John Lennon crossed with Cousin It. He's currently lecturing the attendees:

"And exhale out all of your worries. Just let your negative energy out of your body, and inhale the positive, life-giving energy that's all around us. Focus on the good things happening in your life right now. If you can't think of any, that's okay. Think about something good that happened in the past week instead. It doesn't matter how minor, just acknowledge it, and tell yourself 'it's okay, the world isn't all bad. It consists of as many good things as bad things."

He opens his eyes, spots you, and gives you a warm smile. "Welcome, friend. We were just finishing here, but feel free to sit down and join our contemplation ceremony."

You breathe slowly and try to focus on inner peace and tranquility. You feel the knots in your chest slowly dissolving, and, for a brief instant, you could almost forget what happened to you. And then Rainshadow claps his hands, and it's gone.

"Alright, great work today everyone, be sure to come back next week!"
The crowd starts to disperse out of the backyard, and the loincloth-clad guru comes up to you. "You want to talk to me." It's a statement, not a question.
"Yeah."
"Wait, wait! I can guess..." Rainshadow closes his eyes and makes a deep, throaty tone under his breath. "Yes... yes, I can sense it... there's a great trouble in your heart... you've heard of my healing powers, and you want me to lift you of this burden. That about right?"

>(Intimidate) Your huckster act doesn't work on me. Pony up with some real power, or as far as I'm concerned, you're just a con leeching off of these people.

"Well, I suppose a lot of people would be. But my powers: they're something anyone can develop, with the right kind of spiritual development. Say: you look like you could use a good meal, grandfather. Come on in, and the wife and I will make you a nice, home-cooked meal."

"That sounds lovely."

The wind picks up as you walk towards the house, and the various hanging chimes and bells ring and clatter cacophonously as you step over the threshold and into the house.

The bungalow is a simple affair: unpolished wooden floors, walls decorated with hung carpets, no real signs of electronics. If it wasn't for the working sink in the kitchen, you could mistake this for an old log cabin in a frontier town. Rainshadow gestures to the upholstered chair closest to the fire. "Please, have a seat and we can talk."

Rainshadow chooses to sit on the floor near you, his legs folded beneath him indian-style.

"Listen, Mr. Rainshadow-"

"Please! Just call me Rainshadow."

"Okay, Rainshadow. I'm looking for someone who's in the know. You know the significance of the green antler, the red sword, the orange ashes, and the blue arrow, yes?"

Rainshadow looks at you hard for a second. "Yesss... I think I do. I must say, I didn't expect one of your people to be looking for help from us."

"Us?"

"Me and my wife. She's the one with the actual... you know, magic. I wasn't lying when I said I don't do anything that anyone else can't: I just know a lot of traditional medicine and healing techniques. So, what's your problem, fairy-man? If it's a medicine-thing, you'll want my wife, but if its just an advice-thing... well, there's a reason I'm the guru."

>I haven't been entirely honest with you. Your daughter goes to school with mine, and I wanted to check you out.

"I haven't been entirely honest with you... my daughter goes to school with yours, and they seem to have taken a shine to each other. I just needed to make sure you were legitimate. You have to understand, what with how the Underground is..."

"No, no, I completely understand! I wish you had just come out and told me right away, but I understand. So... you must be little Mary's father! Tell me, is she?..."
You nod. "Yeah."
"Oh! Well, that will make things a bit complicated. They're supposed to be coming over to do their homework today. Does she have any 'allergies'? Besides the iron, I mean."

"Not that I know of."

"Alright, good. Good! That'll just mean that we'll have to hang the blind-spot talisman on the door to the apothecary so the kids don't accidentally get hurt-"

A door swings open, and a petite, dark-haired woman dressed in long clothes, a thick leather apron, and goggles stumbles out in a cloud of steam. "Honey, open all of the windows. Something went wrong when I was diluting the dragon piss: unless you want to be breathing sulfur and acids, we'll need some circula- oh. You didn't tell me we had guests."

"Ah! Sorry, dear. Don't worry, he's one of our sort of people. Fairy. Mary's father, actually! Mr. Derwaldt, this is my lovely wife, Diana. Now, if you'll excuse me, we really do need to open all the windows."

Rainshadow gets up and starts throwing open every window, alongside his wife. A scent like a reptile house mixed with a chemical toilet wafts up from the basement. Diana comes down into the sitting room, throws open the sliding door, and then sits down, taking off her gloves and lifting up her goggles to reveal sapphire eyes.
"Sorry about the mess, I was working on an herbicide and things got a little out of hand. Now, you're Mary's father, yes? Bright girl, from what I've been told."

"Yes..."

"Listen, I have some questions about mage society. I seem to have run awry of a number of them."

"That happens a lot. Some cabals can be very pushy, sometimes. Who were these people?"

"Well, they were operating out of Safe Harbor-"

Diana sits bolt upright at the mention of the asylum's name. "One of them was very boring-looking, wasn't he? They did things to your mind?"

"Yes..."

"Oh... darn it. Those people are very powerful, VERY dangerous players in the mage community. The Seers of the Throne. Religious fanatics who believe that magic is a gift from their gods, and makes them the rightful stewards of humanity. They have their tendrils in the government, the churches, the private sector... everywhere."

"Yeah... I saw some of their experimental subjects. They acted like they were possessed."

"They probably were. Like I said, they'll do anything. Amoral monsters. The local Council has been trying to build up enough strength to dislodge them for years, but we haven't gotten anywhere."

She darts over to a small nook and picks a phone off of the hook. "Yes? Oh, really? Aw, that's a shame. Well, I'll be right over to pick you and your friends up, dear. And you and I are going to have to have a talk when your little study group is over!"

The alchemist hangs up the phone and gives you an apologetic grin. "Sorry, it seems school let out early due to an accident, and I'm going to have to go pick them up. Rain! I'm going to pick up our daughter, make sure everything's presentable to mundanes by the time I get back!"

You shrug. "Yeah. Isn't that normal?"

"You tell me."

"Not that kind of fairy, Rain. You won't have to leave me saucers of milk. I could use your advice on something, though..."

You explain the situation with Conrad to Rain as the two of you store metal rods, put up multicolored talismans, and lock the doors to a couple of closets and the basement, making sure to leave anything sensitive to the Courts out.

"Hmmm... that sounds like a difficult problem. I suspect that Conrad had a hard- Durance, was that what you called it? He was probably very deprived of his basic needs: food, water, shelter, positive regard, all that stuff. When that happens to someone, they start to turn in on themselves. The life-seeking urge becomes directed entirely towards avoiding risk. This clashes with the natural empathy present in all living things, and causes people to act in confusing, self-destructive ways. I would advise giving him some distance for now, but if he seems like he's in danger, you need to let him know you are a friend to him."
Rain squints at you through his glasses as he starts putting on some proper clothes over his loincloth.
"There's someone else you want to talk to me about."

"There's a mundane I know, Micheal Wyndham-"

"You know Micheal too?"

You blink quickly, taken aback. "Pardon?"

"I asked-"

"No, I heard you, just- you know Micheal?"

"Yes, yes. A very... troubled young man, uncomfortable in his own skin. I tried to tell him he couldn't escape who he was, but..." the guru shakes his head.

You overlook the man in his early thirties calling a man in his late 20's "young man" and soldier on. "He's become part of the fairy underworld, and he seems... hell-bent on becoming one of us."

"Oh. Oh... That isn't good. If I had to give you some advice: try and dissuade him of these fantasies of his. He's a chaser, through and through."

"A chaser?"

"OCCULT chaser, man. He can't stand the fact he's not 'special' like you and me. Well, like you."

You open your mouth to continue, but the sound of the door opening silences you.
"Now, dinner will be on in a couple hours, so don't spoil your appetites, alright?"

Diana rounds the corner from the entryway and heads to the bedroom, where she takes a seat and starts reading. Rain pats you on the shoulder. "Can I trust you to keep an eye on the kids for a bit? I need to go finish putting things away downstairs." You turn around to answer, and he's gone. Wait- he's not GONE; he just went through the basement door, with the- thing on it. Argh, you can't quite remember. Well, the important thing is keeping an eye on the children.

"And this is my pad! It's totally, like, environmentally friendly and geomantically arranged and stuff."

"Wow! This is, like, really old-fashioned! Why aren't the floors all shiny?"

"Varnish is bad to inhale, dad says."

"Um... no offense to you guys, but does it kind of smell like sulfur in here? I mean, with what happened in Art today, flammable substances and I probably shouldn't be in the same spac- OH! Hi, Mr. Derwaldt! I didn't know you were friends with the Lemongrasses!"

You smile through your beard. "Well, I was more just in the neighborhood and heard you kids were dropping by."

"DADDY!" Mary bursts through the small crowd and runs into your arms. You pick her up and hug her, your back twanging slightly.
"Oh! Getting pretty heavy, in a year or two I won't even be able to lift you! Well, how was school, sweetheart?"

Mary shrugs "It was pretty good."

The long-haired brace-face- one of the twins, isn't she?- pipes up. "There was a freak accident involving the paints and a malfunctioning light fixture and half the Art room caught on fire! My positive self-image portrait got out alright, though!"

The other twin rolls his eyes. "Yeah, yeah... good for you..."

The group starts unpacking their bags and getting ready to do their homework. The boy twin- Orion, wasn't it?- keeps giving you furitive glances when he thinks you aren't looking.

Sometimes, it's just something like all of his pencils breaking or him falling on people in gym, but yesterday, a light fixture almost fell on him, and today the fire started right where he was painting. Between this reaction and the weird look they shared I think we can safely infer in character

"...You two already knew, didn't you?"

"Uh... PLEASE don't be mad at me, mom! I wanted to tell you but Mary made me promise!"

"...I-I didn't mean to do bad, Daddy. I'm so-orry..."

"It's fine. I understand. You said that you couldn't tell ANYONE, right? You need to be more careful about how you phrase your oaths, Mary."

"O-okay."

"Next time, if you find something like this out, I want you to tell me first, before you swear any kind of oath. Okay?"

Mary nods.

"Okay, good. Now, you two go back to your friends, okay?"

Moonbeam and Mary file quietly out of the room.

Let her know about Alfred's curse if she doesn't already know and ask what time to be around for helping with the errand tomorrow

Then I think we can say bye to Mary and leave, I would like to maybe check out what information we can about setting up a PI Agency

Tiebreaker between these two, I guess.

2nd. Alfred's curse seems more important than helping with their homework.

You turn to Mrs. Lemongrass as she starts to open her book again. "Listen... you're an expert on magic, right?"

"Well, I don't know about 'expert', but I am a mage, so I could give you some advice. Before you ask: no, I won't make you a love potion or turn lead into gold."

"I wouldn't dream about asking after either of those things. I just want some advice. My Mary thinks another one of the kids in her class- Alfie out there- has a curse on him. What do you know about that?"

"Curses? Not really my area of expertise... but I'll ask around about it. I do know that they're hard to get rid of, especially generational curses- and if he's cursed, it's probably generational."

"How do you know?"

"Because a curse is a very powerful piece of magic: you don't throw that kind of power out for just anything, and I can't see a 13-year old being guilty of something that would get a curse put on him specifically."

You shrug. "Well, if you're sure."

Well it would be good to get the kids acclimated to us, plus we can recover some willpower

You head out into the living room and walk up to the kids.
"Sooo... who needs help on their homework?"

Orion takes a calculating look at you. "Actually... my sister and I could use some help with our science homework."

"WHAT?! We've got this dow- OH!... We definitely need help with this homework, which is really hard. Nudge, nudge."

"Well, what's it about?"

"The solar syst-"

"We're having to learn about... forensic techniques! Yeah, definitely. So... what can you tell us about that?"

"Well, first off, you don't draw chalk outlines around corpses. That contaminates the crime scene, and only idiots who've seen too many cop shows actually do it. Second, I know that's not your REAL homework, Orion, so how about you stop beating around the bush and get to it?"

The homework is some basic remedial stuff about the solar system, which you manage to work your way through just fine (although you can't help but feel that you might have mixed up Neptune and Uranus a couple of times). You decide to stay for dinner after the homework's done. Being surrounded by kids, eating with a neighbor... it seems almost normal. Feels... nice. Once dinner wraps up, you excuse yourself and get the date to meet tomorrow from Diana. 11:00 AM, sharp. Bring long boots and a gun.

End of Chapter.

Why would you do this to us, you wrote too many amazing characters with too many engaging plotlines, how can we choose

But I did promise last time
>Mary
>>
>>1422688
>Why would you do this to us

This... this is a good point, actually. Scratch the whole thing, I'll just rotate between the three. Is that fine for the thread?
>>
>>1422693
Or would that get too annoying/repetitive? Honestly, I'm just trying to make sure you guys don't get fed up with the different-perspectives thing, or with the same day/days being retrod.
>>
>>1422537
>>Play as Terry (You're being inducted into the Nightfall Institute)

>>1422695
I don't think it will be annoying.
>>
>>1422693
>>1422695

I 100% endorse this idea, so long as you don't get burned out I certainly won't be
>>
>>1422695
Honestly I'd find that really refreshing for a quest if we came at the day from different character angles, if you think you can pull it off i'm game
>>
>>1422695
Do it when you think it narratively useful. Both Jerry and Terry have interesting things going on, and Mary plays in sick an odd manner that any thing you decide you want to write will likely turn out.
>>
>>1422842
>in sick an odd manner
?
>>
>>1422537
>Play as Terry (You're being inducted into the Nightfall Institute)
>>
>>1422695
Either way is fine, I like the multiple protagonist thing. Maybe you should railroad us into one of the characters when something important is going to happen in their story, but I trust your judgement.
>>
>>1422693
I'm not saying you should do it everytime vur right now the 3 of them have interesting things to do.
You could rotate and keep the days going whrn their appointments are not simultaneous, but yhe 3 stories are nice and i don't think one will overlap over the other so we can do it all

I wanted Terry but I'm going to respect an arbitrary order we've just made accidentally tha says Terry, Jerry, Mary so everyone can get a little of what they want.

My vote:

>>Play as Terry (You're being inducted into the Nightfall Institute)

Terry time (Mary will appear next thread).
