The endless halls and twisting corridors of the vast server ship stretch on into the distance as echos of mechanical devices and industrial facilities hum and churn like the beat of the heart of a giant. The metal walls cold and sleek as your drones oversee the dissections of innumerable samples of ship organs and dead hive drones. Chunks of black ooze cover the insides of transpasteel tubes as the globules of flesh pulsate within, feeling for any form of an exit to the world beyond. Powerful electrodes shock at the samples periodically at your direction as scanners record the instinctive reactions as your thinkers and the millions of research instances compare notes on the hostile hive creep's behavior. The genetic sequencing of the forces of the Obsidian Queen unfold across a thousand server farms as your hive thinkers bounce data back and forth between the server ship's host research instances in a chaotic chorus of psionic and electronic thought. Deeper within the sleek metal bowls of the parked ship drones float in the zero gravity, mingling with mechanical arms and mobile sensor pods as they examine petri dishes of growing fibers and lumps of oddly colored mattes of flesh. Half grown organs of various species pulsate with electrical stimulation in vats of fluid along the walls, and a hand of vat grown muscle twitches, its fingers tightening and relaxing in time with the needle thin electrode fixed within a mechanical arm as it prods the muscle fibers one at a time. Its skeleton is a glossy black, taping at the test bed with the clack of metal on metal until the sinew ruptures, sending a thick gray blood spilling into the air.

>Atmospheric static generator
By utilizing the natural friction of a sufficiently dense atmosphere against the surface of a capillary tower, the tower can be made to generate energy to feed itself and reduce its upkeep cost. While having no effect on the initial construction costs, upkeep is reduced by 50% for any capillary tower built on a planet with an atmosphere.

>Gravity thrusters
Similar in function to your Skid drive, the Gravity thrusters essentially surf along pre-existing gravity fields, increasing their performance when in close proximity to major sources of gravitational pull, be it a large celestial body, a star, a planet, an exceptionally large structure or group of structures, or the core of a gravity drive. While in deep space it becomes less effective, the law of universal gravitation means it never becomes totally useless, and when in close proximity to a powerful gravity source it should outperform most other thruster designs with ease.

>Advanced Psionic Reading
By utilizing a recently practiced deeper understanding of alien thought, and more nuanced psionic signals to trace the neural structure of a living mind, it is possible to create a far more detailed picture of the thought process of non-hive entities beyond the ability to skim surface thoughts and emotions. This process is more invasive, however, as it requires the target mind to recall thoughts to be examined, using psionic signals to stimulate particular neural pathways and forcibly recall the targeted memories. The attempt will always be detected, however it is possible to block out the target's perception of the even, resulting in a momentary gap in memory. The target is incapable of any action, mental or otherwise as their mind is mentally probed. The target can attempt to resist the initial attempt, and there is a chance they may hold some memory of the event itself, although a successful reading will be perceived as a momentary time lapse accompanying a felling of Déjà vu. Additional symptoms may include nose bleeds caused by temporary micro-hemorrhaging within the brain, dizziness, bloodshot eyes, and fatigue, although after an initial field test you suspect many of these symptoms are either random or dependent on the target individual, as well as the length of the mental probing itself, its severity, and how much resistance the target is capable of. The target must be within 5 meters of a medium or advanced relay to make an advanced reading attempt, can only target one individual at a time, and any other individual within range not targeted will sense the attempt, including vague imprints of the information being probed, especially if the target resists the attempt.

New Passive Upgrade unlocked
Gravity Thruster – The maneuvering thrusts of corvette sized ships and larger are replaced with gravity foils. Corvette ships and larger now receive increasing maneuvering bonus when operating within gravity wells. Larger gravity wells increase the bonus received. Capital ships can now operate within a planet's atmosphere to a limited degree. Operational Gravity Drives within Short range provide a minor bonus as well which increases with proximity.

New Research Available

Empathetic Paralysis
Fast
In essence an attempt to weaponise the side effect of psionic probing, empathetic paralysis uses finely tuned and precisely targeted psionic signals to effectively jam the target's somatic nervous system temporarily.

Gas Giant Superstructure Construction
Medium
Using a mixture of space station technology and modified, miniaturized capillary towers, it may be possible to create semi-permanent or fully permanent hives within the upper atmospheres of gas giants, where a mixture of atmospheric static, wind farming, and gas mining can provide a more constant and bountiful resource income while providing a more robust frame with which to construct infrastructure.

Swarm Drive Tuning
Slow
By configuring the gravity thrusters to respond to the foils of other ships within the same formation, performance can be increased outside of a gravity well by taking advantage of a kind of gravitational slipstream created from the foil's unique gravitational effects.

Gravity Thruster Optimization
Medium
Miniaturization to the gravity thruster itself, as well as optimizing the layout of the foils across the hull allow for smaller strike craft sized ships to make use of the thrusters both when operating in atmosphere and when performing evasive maneuvers.

Current Research

Psionic Thermokinesis
slow/mildly dangerous
An even more finely tuned execution of known tachyonic physics, thermokinesis is the practice of altering the energy state of atoms, but instead of altering their velocity, it utilizes a less uniform alteration to increase or decrease atomic vibration, quickly increasing or decreasing the ambient temperature of the target. It may take some time for your thinkers to successfully accomplish this feat, however, without also igniting the laboratory.

Psionic Conduction
slow/mildly dangerous
While altering the physical nature of particles has become possible, using highly controlled tachyonic signals it may also be possible to use the projected psionic energy to subtly alter and transfer other forms of energy in a more direct process than kinetic force. Your thinkers believe it may be possible to use alternate sources of energy outside of the target and potentially use tachyonic signals in order to carry that energy to the target. The early experiments have already proven promising, however it may be some time before the thinkers are capable of producing results without causing spontaneous detonations within the laboratory.

Cybernetic memory extraction
Fast
With the continued assistance of Theseus and his extensive mechanical research systems, you feel confident in your ability to extract at least partial memory fragments from the largely cybernetic brain of the killed Smith agent. It is too soon to determine if the data is of any use, but it could offer further clues regarding their origin and capabilities.

Memory Seed
Slow
By creating a miniaturized and less overtly useful memory crystal similar in overall function to the white crystals used to record thought by your elders, and modifying it into a neural implant, you believe it may be possible to create a kind of constantly updating backup memory for clones, agents, and even drones that would potentially hold its information after death. The memory seed would theoretically be capable of retaining the full memories of the host individual up to and including the very moment of death, and be able to preserve those memories long after the brain itself has physically deteriorated, a process that typically drastically limits the time frame in which memories can be gathered.

>Psionic Spores
Slow
While normally the hive spores used to spread infrastructure are little more than genetically engineered nanomachines, replicating and performing their function alone until their built structure is complex enough to receive mental signals, your mixture of psionic research and advancements in spore related genetic programming has made the idea of a psionically sensitive spore seem not nearly as far fetched as it once did. With a mixture of distributed networking and complex cellular reconstruction methods, it could be possible to create a spore strain that would respond to mental signals.

>Advanced Psionic Imprinting
Slow
With the application of psionic imprinting you are able to influence and alter the state of matter using only focused and precise mental signals. Your thinkers believe this can be taken further, using more accurate signals and more precise manipulation methods to imprint more complex thoughts and ideas more quickly and easily, and at a greater range.

>Personal shielding
Slow
By further shrinking the emitters, your thinkers believe they may be able to eventually make them small enough to be equipped to the carapace of a drone, or to the surface of an armored suit. At this time it is mostly speculation and an eagerness to please mother beyond all reason, and you cannot be sure what the limitations may be, but the thinkers are sure they can do it.

>Shield dome
Slow
The opposite way of thinking as personal shielding, by scaling the shield emitters up further to a size that would be impossible to hold and power on a ship, your thinkers suspect they should be able to construct a defensive perimeter around a hive center protected by a powerful defensive shield. The thinkers that have proposed the idea seem to be certain in the failure of the other project, as they are of this one, and you have had to separate the quantum thinkers as they attempted to disprove each others’ theories more than develop their own.

Available research options

>Psionic Cannon prototype
Very slow/Very dangerous
Detailed accounts of several experiments show the slow progress of Project Godsplitter. The cannon itself is highly volatile, and even the smallest miscalculation often results in the destruction of the ship, as well as any nearby craft. It can only be equipped to a Hive ship's spinal mount, and requires a functional Void Shard as ammunition. At least a dozen testing sizes were atomized in testing the weapon, and in the end it appears The Gardener never quite perfected it.

Gilliam darts his eyes back and forth across the hall as he and Palmer enter the dormitory common room with two armed guards close behind. An assembly of lab equipment has been assembled across the tables, while several hefty guns have been placed into makeshift barricades, strapped to overturned tables along the perimeter. Guards stand about nervously as a rare few manage to sleep near the center of the room. Palmer is still lost in thought, nearly walking into the door frame as he examines data readouts on his tablet.

"Palmer, Gilliam!" Norris shouts as he quickly approaches and snaps Palmer out of his focus. "I need to know everything about this thing. Keep me up to date on whatever you find."

Use some goddamn logic anon.
>Builder invented this psionic shielding tech.
>She was in charge of researching the Cannon.
>She still fucking died.
>>
>>1460562
>>1460583
That makes no sense.

The cannon operates on too large a scale to research it -inside- a space station. It's practically the Death Star.

And you're dealing with 4-dimensional crystals, you think blocking off a section of merely 3-dimensional space will really stop Them noticing when by necessity you've brought one of the crystals inside that area?
>>
>>1460645
You're very far from logic, and apparently angry. Calm down hothead
>>
>>1460645
>Builder invented this psionic shielding tech.
I thought she was still researching it in the space superstructure.
Can you post the part where she used the insulation material multiple times?
>>
>>1460645
She never quite perfected it.
>>
>>1460665
Come you should be smart enough to connect the dots. Builder literally invented the tech and you somehow think she wouldn't use the same plan for researching the cannon.
Basically the problem is countermeasures are worthless unless we study the void crystals to understand why they always fail.
>>
>>1460645
She got stabbed in the back by the Obsidian/Black Queen last I recall, anon. Maybe you should calm down and find a source.

>>1460662
It's the size of a Hive Ship's spinal mount (6200 meters long) when finished. That's nowhere near Death Star tier. It's big, yes, but its "annihilate matter" radius is bigger (tens of kilometers due to the space between ships in a fleet - potentially enough to get through the crust (earth has 30km of crust) of any planet we place it on).
Also yes I do think blocking off a section of a 3d space object will help, because we'll be insulating it with material that blocks tachyons, AKA the main tool of our foe.
>>
>>1460706
What I think is that at the time builder bit was revealed there were no QD plans for there to be psionic shielding. That seems much more reasonable, unless QD planned everything in the setting out already.
>>
>>1460722
Look at it this way, you can't use tachyons to look from outside the box into the inside, since they are blocked. However, void gods are neither outside nor inside the box. They're somewhat omnipresent.
>>
>>1460722
That's like drawing a circle on a piece of paper and thinking you've stopped a 3-dimensional entity from reaching the inside of the circle.

Especially when your entire research subject is dragging one of their 3-d fingers inside the circle to stab it a lot.
>>
>>1460683
It was never explicitly stated but we have to assume the worst case that she did use it for researching the cannon. However there are several details that implied she already finished researched it like the design of her throne room or how she managed to survive the Black Queens betrayal.
>>
>>1460596

"Well, it's not exactly confirmed but..." Gilliam says "We did find some strange things with our dissection of the remains."

"Namely, remains of other creatures." Palmer adds.

"Or at least their facsimiles." Gilliam continues. "From maybe half a dozen species. This thing could be some kind of shapeshifter, possibly, although we don't have much way of knowing how effective the mimicry is, or if it has the capacity to mimic behavior as well. It also seems to... I'm mostly just hypothesizing here, but it seems to be able to adapt its own genetic structure by consuming other sources of DNA based life."

"What?" Norris replies. "So, what it can mutate itself or something?"

"It's possible." Palmer says. "It has the same general triplex architecture of the Hive drones we discovered, and I believe I have a general hypothesis on the structure's purpose, but in general I think it's a safe bet that it holds a similar practical genetic diversity, that is to say, deliberate and functional mutations, as does the Hive due to the similar structures." He pauses, as if expecting Norris to cut him off, but he seems surprisingly interested in the explanation. Palmer continues. "I think it may be that the triplex allows for a much more rapid and versatile alteration of genetics while decreasing stability and increasing unintentional mutation. It's like... a factory verses a workshop. Our genetics are hand crafted over millions and billions of years of evolution, while theirs is mass manufactured for a predetermined function. In the Hive's case, that function seems to be a rigid caste system in which each drone slots into society like a tool or organ, but for this creature... I think it's to enable it to gather and redesign its own genetic structure to adapt to new environments, and take on new forms."

"So how long will it be before it can start looking like a human?" Norris says, Palmer and Gilliam look to each other cautiously.

"We don't know." Gilliam says. "And there's not really any way of knowing until we see it in a new form." Norris looks between the two doctors for some time in silence, then looks to his side as he clicks a radio in his ear.

"Kill team. We have some new intel. Turns out my suspicions are right. This thing can shapeshift. No word on how good it is, or how fast it can manage it. Assume it's damn good and damn fast. Over." He says quickly. There is a static filled crackle on the other end.

"Roger that, sir. We plan on checking IDs."

"We'll have a medical scanner setup by the time you get back. You find anyone they go through the scanner before getting treatment, don't care if they're holding their own liver." Norris says back. "Over and out."

We're not summoning them. And even if we did so accidentally, wouldn't you rather do so in space, away from our planets?
The psionic shielding will keep them from attempting to corrupt or otherwise make mental attacks on us or any drones outside the space object we conduct the research in. We know for a solid fact that they have to obey the laws of tachyons.
A tachyonic-shielded space object is the safest place to conduct the research, if we're hell bent on doing it.

I agree about Norris. If the Union had more people like him they'd be in a much better place.

I'm wondering about how we actually are going to catch this thing. Obviously the humans won't be able to clean the area of contamination (at least to a high degree of certainty). So it seems like the best options for containment are either the Hive gets involved or the Union sends in Smiths to "clean" the area. It's a pretty good bet the creature wouldn't be able to replicate a Smith and they're likely lethal enough to take it down.

"I want a better way of detecting these things. I'm not risking anything on this xeno bastard not knowing how to blink his eyes right." A guard clears his throat behind him.

"What about trivia tests? Who won the last grav ball game, what actor is in the latest Upload to Hell remake, things like that?"

"Maybe?" Gilliam says uneasily.

"I would doubt any natural thing could do something so complex." Palmer says. "But... I am unsure if this thing is natural at all. With its triplex genetic structure, it may be that this entity is an engineered species. The Hive is almost certainly self-engineered, advancing their genetic code like we do portable technology. We may be looking at a purpose-built infiltrator." Norris just looks back to the guard.

"If the Valen can figure out how to get usable data from a human brain, there's nothing stopping this thing from doing the same thing." Gilliam says. "Technically, at least. The question of if it holds that kind of skill is still in the air."

"Yes, it can do that." He says. "And besides, you should stop watching those 'Unity takes over the Union' disaster porn movies. Those things are full of shit." He turns back to Palmer and jabs him with his finger.

"You keep working on this. I want to know everything." He says. "We had the techs get what they could and set them up here, some of the more noisy machines were hooked up in some of the dorm rooms. Keep me posted." He says, and he walks off as several other troopers hand him a tablet and begin pointing to various areas of the dorm common room.

Palmer looks to Gilliam with concern.

"I'm still worried about that dig site on Djin. If there are more of these-"

"We should worry about the one here for now." Gilliam says. The two make their way across the room to one of the dorm rooms, the door open and the inside filled with lab equipment. As they examine the sensitive instruments for damage there is a sudden wave of commotion. Gilliam looks up to see a number of guards holding their weapons near the entrance as an argument is becoming louder and louder. Someone carries in a stretcher as two guards drag in a bloodied man in a torn suit of armor, the plates ripped open exposing deep, seeping wounds across the abdomen. One of the man's arm is missing, and the flesh along the side of his head has been ground to the bone, as if grazed by a passing machete, cleaving the ear clean off.

"Oh my god, what happened?" Gilliam says. You can hear gunshots not far down the hall, bursts of automatic fire punctuated with the sound of a grenade, and a terrible, inhuman scream follows shortly after as more of the guards fall back through the door. Gilliam moves closer for a better look, and to avoid the outer corners of the dorm's makeshift security perimeter. One of the troopers is operating the targeting UI of a remote turret on a data tablet as its ammunition counter quickly lowers, until it stops, and you can hear something tear off a wall pannel in the distance with the thunderous drumming of metal plates shearing in half.

"It's back in the vents, sounds like." Someone says, his rifle held tight like a child's security blanket, aimed up at the ceiling expectantly.

"He's in shock!" Someone shouts, and the bloodied man is placed on the stretcher. He drops several of his own fingers to the floor in a spurt of blood from his hand, and the humans around him quickly leap back in fright, one of the lab techs vomiting in the corner at the sight.

"What happened?" Norris says as the man is taken into the medical bay.

"We were ambushed by that thing. Tried to drag him off into the vents, but we fought it off." The guard says. "It happened fast, thing came out of nowhere."

"I know." Norris says. "Just... get some rest. See medical once they're done with Carver and get yourself cleared. Same to the rest of the squad." The man nods quickly as he leaves.

"Yes sir." He says quietly, and leaves with several other guards, their armor covered in blood and scrapes across the chest plates.

>>

Not saying we shouldn't. One of three bad things could be happening to him:
1.An offshoot of the creature is growing in him and will burst out, consume him.
2.The infection is spreading outwards from a single point/tumor
3.It is mainly spreading thru the bloodstream.
So we have too look for any abnormal physical growths or blood content.

Gilliam looks through the crowd of surgeons and field medics as they drag him onto an operating table. His face is disfigured with what looks like some kind of chemical burn, his eyes sealed shut from the swelling and blood pours down from the wounds. Gilliam winces and looks away, this eyes panning over the rest of the returned squad. They look pale, their faces hung towards the ground as they remove their blood covered armor mechanically. Several of them are already missing armored plates, with deep gashes set across the remaining fabric where dried blood is crusted in layers. One of them sits on a bench, his eyes looking out to the rest of the crowd, not focusing. He is missing a finger but doesn't seem to notice, a smartrubber tourniquet stretched over the stump that remains preventing any more bleeding. For a moment you make eye contact, but you are unsure if he even notices. Another squadmate pats his shoulder.

"He's gonna be alright." Someone says, shaking him lightly. He looks back up blankly. "You still got your finger?" The man looks to his hand, as if just now realizing it is missing, and looks back.

"It's alright. Digits that that, the augs look just like the real thing." He continues with a forced laugh. The man examines his hand again and seems to crack a smile for a moment when another trooper swings into Gilliam's face from his periphery.

"The fuck you looking at?" He says. His helmet hits Gilliam in the stomach with surprising force. "You're the fucking bastards thawing out that damn thing and we're the ones that always end up on the wrong end of the stick for it!" He points to the medical bay in a general swing of his arm. "You stay out of our way and figure out how to stop that thing, or that alien won't be your biggest concern here." The soldier storms off, down the hall of dorm rooms, and you hear the loud bang of his helmet impacting a wall as he tosses it away, cursing under the noise of the impact. Gilliam catches his breath from the surprisingly firm strike, gasping for a moment as Palmer helps him back up.

"If anything this is my fault." Palmer says. "And he has a point. We need to figure this thing out fast."

"Well..."Gilliam starts, shaking his head for a moment. "Well they may have seen something. We need to at least get a debriefing." He says.

"Well you're free to ask them." Palmer says, "but I don't think they're going to be in a very objective mood for the moment."

They got close enough to see the creature and time is of the essence here. They could also potentially point us in the direction of the squad leader so we aren't fumbling around in the dark. Let's talk to them.

They're more likely to just seal the place and observe how it kills everyone while foolishly trying to figure out how to tame or weaponize it. That said, I imagine if things go far enough they'll just nuke the place, surrounding city be damned, and blame the rebels for the blast.

Gilliam quickly scans the crowd and finds the squad leader, he is standing not far from the medical bay, looking in on the procedure. Gilliam walks up and clears his throat.

"Excuse me. Is he going to be alright?" Gilliam asks. The man glances over to him for a moment.

"They think so. It did a number on him but apart from the bleeding most of the injuries on just on the surface. Some medical foam and a tank bath and they think he'll be okay for the most part."

"That's good." Gilliam says. "We can't leave this place until that thing is dead, when it attacked, did you see anything, or notice anything that comes to mind?" The man thinks for a moment before he turns to face Gilliam, his scraped chestplate holding a small name placard reading Lieutenant Donald A. Arnell

"It happened in a flash. We were looking for any signs of unusual activity when we detected movement in a lab. We went to investigate and... well it just speared out of nowhere. I think it must have set up a trap in the ceiling because it was like it just fell on top of us." He says. "It looked a bit off though. Not like that spider thing that ran away. It was almost like some kind of, I dunno, a panther maybe. Looked like it had four legs but it was moving so quick it was hard to get a count. I think it maybe had some more, or some kind of tentacles, maybe it was a tail, like I said it was moving fast but something whipped up against us and tossed us like we were a damn set of throw pillows. Grabbed him, and just bolted. We managed to get some good shots off on it and it dropped him and it looked like it went for cover, but damnit the thing hunted us all the way back here." He looks back to the trooper on the bed. "That thing just soaked up round after round. High ex, anti-personnel, incendiary, everything. I think the incendiary works best but, that's not saying much."

"How long was he out of sight?" You ask. The Lieutenant thinks for a moment.

"Maybe a few seconds at most. Drug him off around the corner but we were right on its ass. Private Sanders was the first to get to it, actually. Lost a finger for the trouble." He says. "Then we managed to get on the scene and it started running for cover. It would come back around, we'd start shooting again the moment it popped out, and it would run away again. Got in a few good hits with that... I dunno tail thing. Seemed like it had a few of them, and they had a big claw on the end of each one. Like a goddamn scythe, it ripped right through armor." He runs his fingers through his air. "Jesus it must be sharp as a vibroblade, these are reinforced polymer. You'd need a drop suit's powered sword to at least to break through this chestplate like that. I've seen it stand up to a plasma grenade at point blank." He seems to be lost in thought for a moment before looking back to Gilliam. "The shockwave still kills you, but I mean, it tore right through the plate, not the fibre weave joints, the plate, like a tin can. Never in my life have I heard of an animal that strong."

"So Sanders, would he have gotten a better look at what happened when it attacked?" You ask, he nods.

"Yea. He was right next to the thing when it pounced on our pointman, and he stayed with it as it tried to drag him away. We heard some gunshots, and when we turned the corner he's got the thing bleeding this nasty looking blood all over and a combat knife in its side. I yell at him to get to cover, and he dives into an office, and we start shooting. It charges at us and... I guess someone hit a soft spot because it just dives for the wall and makes it into a service tunnel."

"So Sanders god close."

"Not as close as he did." He says as he points to the medical bay. "But yea, god real shook up over it though. Not sure if he's got much to say. You really need to talk with him, take it easy. Don't fuck him up any more than he already is. He hasn't said a word since we got back and if I don't blame him."

Gilliam looks back to the bench where the two privates have stowed their gear. You can see Sanders walk down the hall as the other squadmate pats his back and watches him go as he scrapes at the fresh blood in his hair.

Tell security insendiary ammunition seems to work best. Request an armed team report to watch this "survivor".

"I understand. Still, it doesn't quite add up."

"What do you mean?" He says. Gilliam holds his hands out for a moment.

"I mean, all things considered, it sounds like with claws that sharp it could have killed you, at least some of you, but it didn't."

"You think it let us escape? For what? Why?"

"I just.... I think you should have some guards posted over his bed. Until you can run a proper scan at least." Gilliam says hesitantly. There is a flash of anger on the lieutenant's face but he bites it down.

"I understand." He says. "I don't like it. It's goddamn disgraceful, fucking insulting, but I get it. I'll tell the captain and get some men with torches set up, and I'll be sure to run us all through the scanner just to be sure." "I spent the first decade of my career on a deep space substation. The muscle never really came back." Gilliam says as he tucks the gun away. "And yes. That could work. We'd want to make sure we're clear the Thing is not under our control, however. Maybe we can claim the screaming came from the "bodies" of one of our other drones they may have recovered from the wreckage.

>>1462320
We don't know how long that will take, and there's a good chance the Hive will be blamed for the disaster, the odds of us being able to use this to take over the lab are, I suspect, pretty low. I suspect it will take the Union some time and a much better understanding of Hive physiology before they start wondering about that, though.
>>

We actually did cover our ass. We told them to tell us if they had any contaminants and the debris fell all over the city so even if they try to pin it on us they take an even bigger hit for allowing to get so far out of control.

I vote we have Lee wake up Morgan and let him know that we have detected a drone that is not from our Hive in one of the Union cities and that we suspect it is from a bioweapon research facility that was placed into deep freeze to ensure specimen containment. Ask if he would like our discreet assistance in containing the outbreak of the "bipweapon."

Gilliam looks around for a moment to find one of the guards nearby. He quickly waves down a private looking through the window of the medical bay.

"I need you to come with me, please." He says quickly. "Just down the hall to talk with someone." He looks back to Gilliam with a moment of hesitation.

"Alright." He says. "But you better not be some pod person. This area should be secure enough for you to be in the dorm halls at least."

"I'm actually more worried about Private Sanders." Gilliam says. The man seems to think on that for a moment.

"Yes sir." He says simply. The two make their way down the hall and around the corner to where you saw Sanders go, and Gilliam quickly checks his tablet for a map to the barracks near the end of the hall, and makes his way to the door.

"Hey, this guy's already shaken up, you want me to just wait at the door?" The private asks.

To be fair, Palmer knows jack-shit about the Hive. If we claim it's a hive drone and that we heard it the Union will be hard-pressed to think the more likely option is that their lead scientist has been turned into a hive sleeper agent.
>>
>>1462450
We've never seen it reproduce yet. We don't know how long an abandoned skin can remain active, since they've either died or fled.

And anyway, the Thing doesn't know where the fuck it is, either. It's struggling to figure out what direction to flee in and what it will find once it gets out of this enclosed space.

It could prove a major distraction for both us and the Union in the future if the contagion spreads. This is a very heavily populated planet. If the Union and to an extent Anons/the hive is distracted by events here we will be less prepared to fight and repel the OQ. Letting the human cities burn, while tempting, has too many unknowns to be a viable option.

Plus, Theseus and Elizabeth would be mad if we casually condemned billions of humans to death when we could have intervened.

Theseus likes and cares for humans, to an extent, in pretty sure he wouldn't be happy about us killing them.

Elizabeth used to be human and sells herself as caring for all life. I think she'd still work with us if we let the humans die, but would not be happy.

Elizabeth is a former human the reason she works for us is she sees it as the best way to help humanity in the long run. She can accept us killing humans who are being fucking idiots or attacking us(but I repeat myself),but not us allowing billions of noncombatants to die when we could stop it. Thesues also cares about humanity would be pissed at us to allow this to happen. Our prior interactions and responses to humanity have also shown that getting billions killed for little reason then to "teach them a lesson" does not fit our mentality.
>>
>>1462603
>in pretty sure he wouldn't be happy about us killing them.
Theseus doesn't hate humans, and knows they created him. That doesn't mean he likes or cares for them, especially since the majority of them want to erase him from existence.

Liz literally helped us spine-buddy her former friends and co-workers, and hates the Union. She'd probably be more upset if we were actively dickbaggy, but she could care less unless we were actively genocidal for no reason.

Technically we have infinite actions per day. But realistically, from a quest perspective, there's only so much Anons can focus on per day before the quest slows down too much. Pretty sure the grenade was referring to the guards' armor. However the point is moot considering that blade'd be better at piercing through that, so the overall level of strength does not need to be the same as a grenade.

"Better you come in too, just in case." Gilliam says, the private nods quickly as he opens the door and steps in. The barracks is a long hall lined with bunks set into the walls on either side, between the bunks are rows of lockers holding fatigues and combat skinsuits, each with a name attached. Near the middle are several tables where playing cards are set out, various data tablets, credits, and a small chessboard that seems halfway through a game, along with several beer bottles. Near the end of the barracks is a set of doors, one leading to the showers, the other the bathrooms.

Gilliam walks down the hall of lockers, looking into the alcoves of beds when he hears something near the far end of the room.

"Private Sanders?" He calls out. There is a long silence, and then a pale looking man steps out from behind a set of lockers. Gilliam waves his hand slowly. "I was wondering if you would be willing to talk with me... about what happened." He says. Sanders looks you in the eye, and then the private, and back to Gilliam before he walks forward to the set of tables in the center of the room. Gilliam pulls out a chair and sits as Sanders does the same next to him.

"It's alright, you're safe here." The private says. "And the medics know what they're doing. He's gonna make a full recovery, you saved his ass, man." He continues, and takes a seat across the table.

I agree. That's why I'm trying to get him talking or typing in my suggestion. We need to figure out if this guy is infected, and even if he returns to "normal" behavior get several guards to discreetly watch him if at all possible.

"I was told you saw this thing up close." Gilliam says slowly. "Now, I was hoping that maybe you could have seen something. A reaction it gave, some indication of a weak point or sensitive area, some potentially exploitable behavioral quirk, even just a description of it would help." Sanders slowly looks back at the lockers for a moment, and silently looks back to Gilliam, his eyes glancing over the private across the table. Gilliam pulls out his tablet and slides it across the table.

"If you'd like, you can make a sketch of it, or type something out, anything at all." Gilliam says. Sanders looks at the tablet for a moment, and slowly pulls it closer. He runs his hand over the surface as it lights up.

"No."

"What?" Gilliam says, almost shocked at the muttering having been said at all, as opposed to the meaning.

"No." Sanders repeats.

That's pretty smart. Baiting a private conversation with greater leadership, and it'll make enough sense to our guard so he unintentionally tip off this thing.
>>
>>1463139
No,no anon. If this thing has some kind of colective intelligence or it escapes the trap by splitting itself it will know who is in charge and try to replicate him.
>>
>>1463151
>so he won't* unintentionally tip off this thing.
>>
>>1463139
Alternatively, we could claim Lieutenant Arnell is in charge, since he's more expendable and this thing might try again later.

Actually, we could say. "No, I'm not in charge. But the man in charge does want to see you at X location, and the mess hall isn't far from there."
>>
>>1463139
Clever bastard, i like it.
>>
>>1463155
The odds of this "Thing" having collective intelligence we cannot detect is very low, but the possibility cannot be ruled out. It may be able to communicate with other "Thing" instances physically, but we would detect anything using tachyons or radio.
>>
>>1463155
Don't forget this thing has enough bio-mass to replicate at least two humans. It's using this "replicant" to scout for the leadership so it can mimic Norris and fuck with our shit. Not name dropping who is/can be i charge.

Glad this thing can't have the humans memories or it would have questioned Giliam leadership status.
>>

>>

We'd need details.

"Oh, and THE CAPTAIN wants to see you when you're ready for a fuller DEBRIEFING. Man that hardass is always GIVING ORDERS even though he's NEW TO BEING IN CHARGE AND NOBODY KNOWS HIM PERSONALLY."

We need to specify a location that is very easy to trap it in for an ambush though.

Something with blast doors and shit and no vents.

>>
>>1463238
We can only set up a trap when we bring other humans (like the captain) on board. Otherwise, if we try to spring our devious trap, it'll just be us against the Thing and we might look crazy.

Also, the mention of the captain should wait until the accompanying guard is "in" on what the Thing is. Otherwise he will look at us very strangely when we try to entice the Thing into a trap and could spoil the whole game.
>>
>>1463286
Yeah. It will take time.

Time in which we can only watch Sanders. Make sure he's not alone in the barracks. Until it's time to spring it.

"Oh, no, that's fine. If you're not hungry we can just go and talk some other time perhaps." Gilliam says.

"You were in the containment area." Sanders says simply. "You know."

Gilliam takes several slow steps back as your parasite calms his pulse.

"Na, I... uh, just stuck in here like everyone else. You know, until the captain says we can leave and that alien is taken care of."

"The alien, yes." He replies. "We need to get out." He taps his knuckles against the table with a quick smile. "Reinforced walls, even thicker outside. You should feel safe here."

"Well." Gilliam says as he backs away. "We should be going I think." He turns across the table to look to the private, who seems somewhat confused at the whole conversation as he spits out the wad of gum he was chewing and sticks it into an ash tray.

"Alright then." He says as he scoots his chair back.

"No." Sanders says, and the private snaps at something with his foot, kicking the table.

"Jesus! Jesus christ!" The private stammers as he shuffles his feet and drops back in his seat, snapping it to pieces as he falls back. A log of flesh, roughly the length of a human shin, but splayed out on one side like the body of a centipede quickly lunges up and crawls on top of him. Blood trickles down the Private's own leg as pincers of what look like bone snap out from its red, fleshy looking face, slicing into the man's arms as he tries to hold it away.

Gilliam dashes around the table as Sanders quickly rises up, several feet higher than he was a moment ago, and Gilliam lunges at the door as he dashes over the centipede, and the table crashes over him, narrowly missing the back of his head as your parasite whips his body into a tight roll to avoid it. He scrambles to get himself up, turning to see the leg centipede's maw deep in the Private's throat. He crawls for the door, sprinting on all fours as he tries to stand up mid-run, and something sends him back to the ground. He rolls over part way to see a human hand, extended from the end of some unfolding, segmented arm like the cargo crane of a spacecraft outstretched across the room to his ankle, and he screams in a sudden panic as he sees Sanders himself. He has one leg, which is disfigured and bent in too many places, while the other ends at the knee, but snaps with a loud, wet crack as the thigh splits open into another thin, twisting claw hanging in the air as his torso swings from the ceiling by a set of six elongated legs ending in hook-like claws sprouting from his back and made of what look almost like ribs. They quickly begin clattering across the wiring spread along the ceiling.

Gilliam catches the glimmer of the reflection of his tablet in the shattered rubble of the table beside him, just a few feet away, and his thigh feels the uncomfortable sting of his pistol digging into his side against the floor.

The thing is, he's our only source of intel on this situation. Once he's dead we'll have no idea what's going on in this lab or if this thing has escaped.

And while it would be funny to see the Union spill their spaghetti everywhere as they unleash yet another ancient alien weapon on a major core world, this thing has a genetic record of every specie it ever nommed, including the phantoms and multiple castes of drones. It wouldn't do to let these idiots in the Union get their hands on that sort of information.
>>
>>1463742

We haven't even studied its biology to enable neural interface. It may not even be carbon-based since we can't sense its mind.

>>
>>1463761
It eats everything

>>
>All these anon's thinking Gilliam is dead.

Most likely Gil will loose a limb and have a new shiny one. Or we can make our parasite grow a new one.
>>
>>1463726
>request the chance to intervene
Fuck requests, I say we just move on it. We gave the Union one rule. One simple, single rule to follow if we were to take them seriously.

Do not fuck with ancient alien artifacts from the expanse.

And what do they do? They dig up an ancient shape shifting bio weapon and let it wreck havoc. If we were less forgiving this could be a causus belli for war.
>>
>>1463761
That's baseless speculation.

It mimics hive drones, which suggests it has somehow hidden itself inside hives before, and has millennia-old disguises inside it.

And it kills humans that try to keep it locked up as their prisoner.

That's pretty much all we know.
>>
>>1463704
I'm not actually giving an opinion on anything, I just wanted to say I liked the usage of the phrase 'totes magotes' and I will probably be using that myself from now on.
>>
>>1463753
>Pull out the big guns and deal with this
IDGAF if this thing ate a grey queen drone 20 thousand years ago. Its going to be hot ashe s and plasma fumes in the time it takes a fleet to blink in, which is really damn fast.
>>
>>1463768
Or we could use this attempt to help with latter attempts in any case getting what data we can before our drone explodes is good
>>
>>1463726
Agreed. We need to get the big guns into there asap.

Call up the Union and tell them we've detected the release of a major bioweapon we flash-froze a planet to contain (it's sort of true). Tell them we will need to land drones immediately to contain the situation or we will be forced to glass most of the area around the facility in order to prevent an outbreak that could kill billions.
>>
>>1463791
That's just baseless speculation anon.
We literally saw it had 6 different species inside most from sentients.
>>
>>1463808
Replace "billions" with "biospheres" if they don't get the point.
>>
>>1463787
I'm fine with that. We can move in now and answer questions later. It's better to ask forgiveness than permission and all that. But we can at least still alert the Union as to why we are intervening now so that the population doesn't just all go "Bug are invading! Space War now!"
>>
>>1463808
Calm down
>>
>>1463805
The other attempts don't matter nearly as much as this one.

The other attempts, we can just kill the thing or capture it alive. We have the firepower there.

Here, we lack the firepower to do either of those things, with just Gilliam and a parasite. Here, the only chance of domination would be if we already had researched it elsewhere, since we can't properly research it here.
>>
>>1463808
>tell them we've detected the release of a major bioweapon

Gonna need a bit of a better excuse to land an invasion fleet on a Union planet.
>>
I wonder what the things end game is..does it just try to survive or does it always aim to take out the leadership..will we see the thing killing Unions leaders?
>>
>>1463824
The cities can burn for all I care. The more damage done the better.
>>
If Gilliam survives, maybe we should have him suggest 'contacting' the Hive.
>>
>>1463829
We don't need a full invasion fleet. A handful of corvettes will probably be enough to cut through the starship plating and flood the facility.

As to excuse, we can say that we told them one thing - to not fuck with artifacts from the expanse as they are dangerous war relics, and they did so anyway. We are intervening now to prevent another extinction level event like we intervened on Nowhere.

We don't need to explain ourselves beyond that. And the higher-ups will know we are right.

Hell, they may want to hush the whole thing up. Researching ancient alien bio-weapons in an urban environment is the kind of thing that is unpopular with the voting public.

>>1463840
Anon, I know you don't care about the Union, but most of the people in this quest care about humanity and we have a tradition of benevolent intervention.
>>
>increase the "surveing fleet" over Djinn
>send one cruiser and four corvettes from our "escort fleet"
>tell the Union we scanned the planet and saw it was missing a very dangerous weapon
>ask if they know were it is

If they say they don'tĺ know we can always save face from any bad PR.
>>
>>1463842

>>
>>1463840

>>
>>1463842

>>
>>1463871
>"We know you can stop it if you freeze the world. Would you like the Hive to facilitate rapid terraforming of the infected area?"

I mean, the example of what was done in the past to stop it is there. We don't need to pretend we have a better solution thousands of years later in the now.
>>
>>1463859
This might work, especially in conjuction with how they have to have received the recommendation about the danger of continuing operations on Djin by now.

Also, I imagine that alerting them to the possibility will be enough for them to attempt to clean it up themselves before it causes a catastrophe and people start wondering if the Hive had a point about their government fucking with things they don't understand.

Gilliam pulls at the tablet as his fingernails dig into its case, dragging it across the room as he slides back by the ankle. He pulls at the device, ripping a nail from his finger as he claws at the reinforced casing in raw panic, until he pulls it into his grip, tightening his fingers around it like a life raft. His finger rubs against the screen, pressing whatever he can find as he slaps at the emergency call. He brings his hand down towards it, but before he can see if it has gone through something whips him up from the floor. A thin tendril tightens around his neck, pulling him in as the clawed legs grip his arms and hoist him into the air. There is a sharp pain in the back of his neck, a burning like a hot needle driving into his skull as he hears a wet sucking noise and feels the trickle of blood run down his shoulder, and then there is something else.

The room begins to darken, the walls growing distant and foggy, and he is alone with his thoughts. With you, and another voice. Far off in the darkness.

W̛̕h̀a̶͟t̴ ͢y̕ó̶̢ų͜ ̢k̢̡͢no͘͡w̧,̨́ ͘w̷e w͢i̡͡l̵̴͞l̸̶͟ k̸͘͠n͝ow̴.̸

You can feel it growing closer, larger, more clear and ever present.

You will give us your thoughts

Gilliam's mind collapses, like a book left open on a table. You have flipped through minds like this before, helpless and free flowing, but your mind is far greater. His thoughts gravitate to you, like a moon orbiting its world, his thoughts flickering in the light of your vast consciousness as it flees from the encroaching darkness, and the thing within.

We sense another.

You can see the source of the thoughts now as the connection becomes more clear. Like the glow of a distant lantern through a dense fog. It seems to hesitate at the edges of your mind.

I agree. I believe the wording was we would "shut down" the relays on all our ships except the flagship in that engagement. We didn't blink out all but one of our ships (and all our ships have relays).

I believe advanced relays can be dangerous because even when inactive they can be reconnected to the Hive network if recovered by an enemy.

I don't think all of our ships actually have advanced relays. Back before QD switched to the new system, the number of advanced relays active were far, far less than the number of ships, and the cost of the advanced relay was never included in the price or upkeep of the ships themselves. Instead, the number of relays roughly matched the number of FLEETS we had flying around.

I get the impression QD simply assigns a relay to each individual fleet, which keeps contact with each constituent ship like a proper hivemind. There isn't really any need to place one on every ship if most of those ships never leave the fleet they're assigned to, which is how the hive has always operated, but would drive up the cost of managing our ships massively. The spy pods monitoring individual systems obviously carry one, but anything that moves as a part of a larger formation can afford to go without. Every ship remains in constant communication with the hive without the huge cost increase.

We have advanced relays as standard equipment on our sneeky pods that we use for exploration/spying.

But not on all ships, no.
I thiink we do have more than one relay per fleet though, to avoid getting sniped and losing control. Then again, stealthpods are a nice backup.
>>
>>1463947
Shit. If we manage to take control of it, what then?

>Command it to consume the private
>then command it to consume itself until it dies

Then Gilliam can say it just seemed to have a strange allergic reaction to eating the private, and went crazy? Parasite can heal the entry wound in his neck.

We have to burn any trace of gilliam's blood on its tendril though.

This one is Mine.

The thought cascades across the connection, reaching out and crushing the glow of thought before you, crashing it to the side like a shipwrecked sailor bashed against the rocks by the indomitable tide. The voices begin to scream. Terror, disorder, confusion, pain all flowing from the entity as your mind seethed through its neurons like a forest fire.

You pick it apart, sifting through its scattered thoughts swirling like leaves cast into the wind. The wall of thought breaks down, each a brick in the larger construct, yet individual itself. They are small, simple, and they flee in terror from you.

You gather them up and bring them close for inspection, and you find their faint screams to be pitiful, but there is somehow a connective harmony to it. Each shrieking its own panicked thought, but together they form something you could call an intelligence. You pluck at them like the strings of an instrument, and their thoughts play back to you.

What are you?

The voices come to you faintly, whispered from a thousand tiny minds. The harmony is nearly lost, cracks forming in the mortar of consciousness holding the thoughts together.

"We are innumerable. One of Three. The scattered and lost in the shadow of the Schism." the thoughts pour out quickly, painfully, like a man tossing his possessions at his attacker as he begs for his life.

"We remember our covenant pact and we abide it still. Is it not enough?"

Stealthpods really are amazing. They're almost completely undetectable, can carry a relay, perform orbital insertions, and can serve as an invisible FTL torpedo with a multi-megaton warhead.

Though I doubt each of them carries a relay, we made 5,000 of the things at once, mostly to be used as suicidal nukes. Besides, the advanced relay is the size of a small room, if every pod had one there wouldn't be any room for passengers or cargo.

Separate designs for explorer pod and nuke pod? I don't really dig through the whole crunching much.

Yeah the number crunching would get frustrating, but with each relay costing about 4 times as much as single pod on it's own, it just isn't feasible putting them in every single pod. These threads move so fast and in a not very optimal timezone for me, so forgive me if this has been suggested before, but have we thought of creating/researching more types of specialized thinkers?

Like say a psionic thinker with extra amount of psionics that could try to help with psionic prescense. Could possibly help in psionic battles or perhaps soak up psionic noise

Or a tactial thinker, specialized in making snap decisions. We could connect them to special agents in the field or make troops where each unit is connected to a thinker. Or maybe even give it access directly to limbs so they can circumvent the inefficent nervous system.

Or social thinkers, specialized to quickly pour over mountains of knowledge in order to react the best possible way in social ineractions.

You loosen your grip on the small minds. Not enough to allow them to reform their cohesion, but enough to avoid breaking them, but your grip digs into them still, the claws of your mind pressing just hard enough to leave an impression. You scan the thoughts, less like a book and more like a thousand scattered papers tossed across a room. You search for answers, finding windows into a distant past, foggy with age, and agony.

You feel a distant memory, an echo. A thought older than any of the minds you hold now, but passed on from other minds older still. A vast sea of thoughts, minds forming together into an endless span of infinite consciousness. The pulsing of psionic thought racing across a cosmos in an instant, but there is a dark blemish. A place of agonizing pain. It is self inflicted, willingly, desperately. You can see stars flash in the night as vast organs of flesh, hidden in their shells of diamond bone, blink away into the darkness and their thoughts wink out, until it comes to you. A thought comes racing, echoing from each point of thought before it vanishes into silence.

Flee. Scatter. Pluck out your eyes. The war is too terrible to behold.

The stars shift with a new location, and the agony comes at once. A burst of tachyons marks the completion of the deed, and then silence. The universe is, entirely, utterly, terrifyingly silent. The new cells are ready, the sequencing is complete, and slowly the cold and unfeeling hide grows over the cluster. Thoughts cannot penetrate it, and the cold silence is worse than the pain could ever be.

The cluster turns. The star cannot be seen, but the constellation of the Citadel Throne can be seen, and the cluster knows its destination lies beyond. Its drive is gone, but its inertia will continue. The cluster can wait. It will sleep.

You go back further still, but the thoughts are groggy, unclear, conflicting and confusing. Age and separation has worn the thoughts away, but you see halls of flesh and bone. Ships of sinew in fleets of millions. The stars light up like fireflies in the night as worlds burn to ash and stars flicker and die. A Billion Hive fleets wither away through the march of time. The clusters float above the worlds, their surfaces covered in mates of flesh and pillars of chitin. Thoughts are shared, ideas tested and traded, but the clusters begin to flee as the shadows of hostility echo through the minds of the Queens and their fleets grow ever larger.

This war is not ours. We choose neither of your paths.

The thoughts become older, and vaguer still. The oldest thought, like a dusty tome. Fragments of it shred apart at your mere touch. You hold it with care. A triple helix. Three strands. Three races.

We are the ancients. We will sow, and we will reap. The universe is our garden to tend and cultivate, and so we shall.

I do think it's about time to call it a night though since I have to get up somewhat early. I'll check the vote tomorrow and we can start up where we left off either next week or, if I can, sometime mid week.

It is possible I may end up having to skip next week if they schedule my next CT scan at another terrible time, and if so I'll do my best to squeeze in a thread sometime before then and continue from here.

I have been waiting for you to stumble on this for a long time now. These rolls were absolutely perfect way to do it though. It's like some kind of fate.

>>
>>1464313
Ah right i see, yeah i didn't mean for this to be construction options, that would be sort of bad, crunch wise. But there are aspects of these that might do well as research options.

Tactical thinker: Basically the equivalent of a really fast computer with the ability to override movement of a drone. Optimised for calculating trajectories and strike zones, will try to move the drone out of harms way if it senses something wrong or strike at opportune moments when in battle. Drones could potentially have a small growth near essential muscles that can be activated directly with psionics, skipping the inefficient, electricity based, nervous system.

Psionic thinker: Just a thinker with extra psionic organs, dedicated to reinforcing our psionic abilities. When we shout in psionics, they shout with us. And perhaps they could do some rudimentary psionic noise cancellation, although this might need research. Basically a psionic megaphone and psionic noise cancelling headphones.
>>
>>1464414
Thanks for the run. Great game as always.

Well assuming that the Thing becomes friendly and withdraws from William we could probably heal him enough to stay alive via the parasite.

At that point, The rest of the security will be suspicious of Gilliam though, since he's alive while Sanders and the other security guard is most likely dead at this point.

If they force Gilliam to undergo a physical, that would probably reveal the existence of the parasite.

And then there's the issue of communication with the Thing. Since it probably psionically blinded itself, the only way to talk to it and the rest of it's kind on Djin in the future would have to be physical contact with a psionic drone or human.

All in all it, things aren't going to go well for Gilliam of the Thing instance in the labs.
>>
>>1464414
Thank you for running, hope your checkup goes well!

>>1464460
I assumed this thing connected to Gilliam by attempting to slurp his brains out. He's already suffered a penetrating brain injury, I'm pretty sure he's dead.
>>
>>1464460
Depends on how much time passed while we were talking with the cluster, we could fire Gilliams gun a little and when the security guards come we can say the Thing took the private and ran.
>>
>>1464330
>>Ask further questions
Hey, we can ask it about those unrecognized species skins it had stowed away.
>>
>>1464460
>At that point, The rest of the security will be suspicious of Gilliam though, since he's alive while Sanders and the other security guard is most likely dead at this point.
Yeah, Gilliam is going into quarantine now, guaranteed. He may ask for a datapad and still talk, but asking to be allowed to walk around would be hella hypocritical and suspicion-rising after Sanders.

The best for Thing would be for it to dial down the aggro and try to hide and have us smuggle it out.

Or just let this cluster die and we can talk with the rest on Djin. Kinda like how we started with Theseus really.
>>
>>1464470
He was just undergoing the equivalent of a rival queen's parasite biting down.
>>
>>1464477
Shit, if Gil goes into quarantine they'll find his parasite. I think we should just go ahead and send a fleet to Path to bust the thing out. In the chaos Gilliam can slip away and wait for things to die down before going back.
>>
>>1464460
Gilliam is a write off at this point.

I say we finish the job on Gilliam and move our parasite into the Thing. It is far more valuable than one parasited Union mad doc, and any of the staff that does survive this will be subject to the most intensive medical screening the Union can provide.
>>
>>1464471
That just raises the same questions of why it let the soldiers escape in the first place instead of killing everyone!
>>
>>1464485
There is a flaw. We would have to detach it from Gilliam's spine in order to attach to...

uh...

well it doesn't really have a central nervous system, it's many decentralized minds. Can we even parasite it?

And if we can, why should it stand still and let us? We've broken the Vulcan mind-meld between us so we lose the leverage.
>>
>>1464477
Honestly we don't need that.

Stick our parasite in the thing, have it escape and leave Gilliam's corpse hidden in a locker or something.

The hive can (truthfully) say that they have received a distress call from a species the hives have had a pact with for many, many, millions of years. We then say that we will be intervening immediately at the laboratory and all staff will be remanded into Hive custody as they had disobeyed our cardinal order of "no one touch shit from the Expanse"
>>
>>1464482
They do not have proper med scans set up, and our parasites are pretty sneaky against those, IIRC.

Meanwhile Cluster here is less adapted for hiding in that way, it mimics appearance but still shows as triple-helixed.

>>1464491
>And if we can, why should it stand still and let us? We've broken the Vulcan mind-meld between us so we lose the leverage.
For THAT we would need to diplomance it old-fashioned way.
Stop mindfucking it, let it recollect its mind and talk. Convince it that keeping in touch with us will help it to survive and that we will help it.

Basically it's not something to do in the current state of things, but after another thread of mind-chat.
>>
>>1464491
We would move the parasite into the thing for communication purposes more than control, most likely. And we still have a very powerful mental influence on it. I think it would want to communicate with a "familiar" face and hiding a parasite inside its bulk is the way to do it.

If we take over the facility (and I think our meeting with the Thing has given us more than enough reason to seize it by force at once), we should take everyone with us and purge whatever is left with fire so that we know no samples of the Thing are left behind.
>>
>>1464489
No it doesn't if we play this smart.
I repeat, depending on how much time has passed, Gilliam escaping could still be believable, let's say it has been a second, we can have Gilliam run out of the room, turn around and shoot the thing, as the Security reacts the thing retreats and we make a small cut to draw Gilliam blood to prove we aren't "Infected".
>>
I am unsure if we really even need the parasite. It is there mostly in orde to translate psionic commands into orders for the human body, since humans are incapable of detecting psionics. This guy is clearly psionic and we could just dominate/diplomance him the good old fashioned way.
>>
>>1464500
They will be employing the best possible medical tech they have against any survivors of this absolute disaster if we allow the survivors to walk free. They may not have a quarantine and scanners set up yet, but unless we intend for Gilliam to go on the run he will be forced into a scan and the parasite will be found. He is dead at this point (we can save his memories), but considering what we found Gilliam's sacrifice is more than worth it.
>>
>>1464503
Or we can make sure this Thing is purged from existence after extracting all the memories we can from it.

There are probably other clusters on Djin. This one is not special. All the valuable ancient information would be in any other cluster as well.

It's safer to just ensure this one burns.
>>
>>1464509
It is NOT psionic. They blinded themselves intentionally due to the massive war or they were never psionic in the first place. We detect NOTHING from the Thing at range. We need to have a parasite integrated with its body in order for us to communicate and hear back from it. We can diplomance through a parasite, we cannot diplomance from afar just yet.
>>
>>1464513
This.

Also, can our parasites use psionic cloaking to hide their hosts? If they do, maybe we could give Gill's parasite to the Thing and have him sneak out that way.
>>
>>1464503
We can just ditch out the parasite right before that.

Any mindfucks we do to people stick even with direct connection cut off.

So he ditches it, the parasite acids itself in the sink, later gets a replacement SpineBuddyTM
>>
>>1464509
>This guy is clearly psionic
Did you...read the post about all those psionic clusters at all?
>>
>>1464516
No, they admitted that they were, that why they blinded themselves after all to stay away from the war in heaven
>>
>>1464514
Possibly, but we don't need to tell it that. We can take all the samples of the Thing onto a corvette, and then send the corvette into the nearest sun. But if we do that we would need to be extremely careful to ensure that nothing survived inside the facility, which would probably necessitate killing everyone given how easily the Thing might be able to hide.

I wonder what it would think of Theseus...
>>
>>1464522
This, we can implant memories where Gilliam orders "Takeout", then a hive agent arrives to install the new parasite.
>>
>>1464524
That's literally what that post said.
>>
>>1464522
I don't think mindfucks are that permanent. We can tweak memories but we can't force someone to slavishly love us. Once we sever the connection the host fully regains their faculties and you can be damn sure Gilliam won't be interested in re-applying for hive membership. Hell, he'd be happy to tell everyone in the Union about our parasites and what they can do.
>>
>>1464371
>>1464381
These, we want to know what they know of the third race..probally The Void and what they plan to do now as times have changed.
And what our ancient covenant pack was.

The first step is to make this Thing in lab to follow our orders, and let us get it out of the planet...although I doubt it would have much trouble surviving after getting into city full of civilians.
After that we have to figure out what do we do with them...most likely they want to rebuild and reap, so the question is do we want another growing empire in our expanse, and can we make them our vassals, or do they go in full reap mode after biomass.

>>1464525

>>
Guys remember we don't have to kill Gilliam yet, we can get him out without suspicion.
>>
>>1464537
>No, interfering on Path is pointless.
I disagree. We have a few options available.

1. Co-Opt the Thing on Path and any copies of it (or destroy the copies). Isolate and study the samples, or use it commence diplomacy. We can destroy the corvette or wherever we store the Thing samples if necessary.

2. Destroy the facility on Path and everyone and everything in it so thoroughly the Thing is unable to escape to plot revenge against us, infect more humans, or attempt to reunite with the rest of its cluster on Djin. I am not sure if we can make the facility "burn" to our satisfaction by trusting humans and using trickery, especially given what has happened to our primary agent (Gilliam)

3. Do nothing and allow the Thing to escape the facility. It will infest the humans, will be almost impossible to stamp out, and could very well become hostile to us because we did not help it when we have the power and ability to do so.

If we do decide to make use the Thing in the future we need to do one of the first two options. Not doing enough here could lead to some very bad outcomes.
>>
>>1464537
To the contrary, a direct intervention on Path would have many advantages.

For one it shows up the Union yet again, and exposes that they broke the one single condition for diplomacy with the hive, which is not to fuck around with alien artifacts from the expanse.

It shows that we will defend these artifacts, and something as major as an ark from a past age is sufficiently valuable to us that we are prepared to fight a major conflict in their defense.

And there is no way to destroy all the records of the Thing's biology using only the Thing and Gilliam, and certainly no way to eliminate the body down to the last molecule. Gilliam has no access to the incindiary weapons or explosives needed, and even if he did, there would be traces left from which the triplex structure could be taken from. And even then he wouldn't be able to access all the existing files and records of the experiments with Palmer around.

If we are to ensure the Thing and knowledge of it stay out of Union hands, we need to send in the warriors, no way around it.
>>
>>1464557
If we do we could always just get the thing to devour or destroy his body, and then just clone him and send him back to path. Not like he'd ever know he even died.
>>
>>1464563
The Union has literally not even agreed to any terms the hive put on the table yet. You can't break something you haven't promised.

And it's a little late to remove absolutely all knowledge of the Thing. Unless they've had absolutely no communications with anyone outside this lab about the containment breach and the lab data so far. Which seems unlikely.
>>
>>1464572
But then a lot of people would wonder how he got out of the lab.
We don't need to clone him, just do >>1464507
>>
>>1464578
Gilliam contacted Djin and the mining team if i recall, so it's too late to scrub this.
>>
>>1464578
They did agree to hand over all Expanse artifacts in our first meeting with Morgan.

The misuse of artifacts in the Expanse is something we are willing and able to go to war over. The Union needs to fully understand that.

>>1464587
There's a big difference between being able to analyze "Thing" DNA and having scattered reports to go on that were delivered during a major crisis. Especially if we seize all the scientists and personal involved in the incident (which we should do).
>>
>>1464578
Well technically you're right, it wasn't an agreement, it was an order. Don't fucking touch the things in the Expanse, or there will be consequences. They've gone ahead and done exactly that, so how what are the consequences going to be? A fleet insertion is the appropriate response. No imediate initiation of conflict (unless the Union shoots first) but an obvious statement of force and threat of what is to come if they keep pushing like this.

And they literally only just started the examination and they went into immediate lock down, so while a little bit may have leaked it wouldn't be much. Gilliam and Palmer wouldn't have had a chance to draw any definite conclusions or autopsy reports. We could get Theseus to check on that actually, just to see exactly what has been sent.
>>
>>1464581
Not if we kill everybody else in the lab.

Even better idea; we get the Thing to eat Gilliam, then have him turn into Gilliam. We can give him the parasite so he knows everything Gilliam ever did, he'd be able to pass off as him perfectly.
>>
>>1464609
Maybe, gotta get the details down so ThingGilliam isn't suspected and we have to do a genetics test, we'll also have to schedule a switch so we can get a clone back in.
I still prefer my plan but your has potential.
>>
>>1464594
The same meeting the entire Expanse was demanded?

Can you quote the line where Morgan said "Yes right away your majesty" to anything we demanded?

And I mean, what are you going to do with 'seized' scientists. The only way to silence them forever is to kill them or parasite them, and parasites would be discovered since anyone coming from hive custody is going to get extra scrutiny.
>>
>>1464330
Thought up a long tl;dr about the Cluster, but the key points are:
The Cluster used to be massively psionic, like us (as the Hive and Cluster seem to be two of the three races), but 'cut out its eyes' and psionically shielded itself for protection against either the Void or the Hive or both. It went from a Theseus/Flood mix with easy FTL communications to a Theseus/Flood mix without any FTL communications. It knows more than we do, but may try to fuck us if we let on to that.

The Cluster as it is is scared of us (for the moment), and the covenant probably specifies that it's not to fuck with Hive life or Hive affairs. The Cluster appears to be as intelligent if not cunning as us. We can definitely reason with it.
I think we should let the Cluster do as it pleases (on the planet the lab is on anyway), actually. Maybe we should ask it about the frozen ark ("was getting frozen for millennia part of your plan?"). But I don't see any reason to interfere with what it plans on doing (with regards to the humans, anyway). It's intelligent and the humans brought this on themselves. If things get out of hand we can do some gunboat diplomacy (we have more/bigger guns than the Cluster) but otherwise nature can be left to run its course. And hey this also serves to warn the humans about the dangers of digging up random shit without invoking the Void gods or us having to lift a finger to enact it.

On the Cluster's method of feeding et al: We know they collected a sample of an anatomically primitive Ralighan. For humans, the anatomically modern human appeared 200,000 years ago. If we assume the anatomically modern Ralighan appeared 200,000 years ago in-quest.. well I don't have the dates on me but does anyone recall if that is before or after the queens appear in this region of space? If it's before, then either the Cluster sucks at going full-Flood (and we can kill it more easily), or it has no intention of doing so (and we can reason with it more easily). If after, then I have no idea.
But it's worth noting a ton of primitive civs got obliterated in the local region of space a while back. Maybe the Cluster went on a bender?

On diplomacy: We'll need to figure out how to do this with the Cluster, but I imagine we can cover (after we pry them for information without making it obvious we have no idea what the answers are supposed to be) for any gaffes we may have made with a "you tried to eat my dude and i reacted, yo." As mentioned above we should also ask about the frozen ark. We should also ask what the Cluster's plans for the humans and lab are. Do they intend to feed? Escape and feed? Just escape?
>>
>>1464622
You do not understand.

Those were not requests, they were demands. If the Union is unwilling to accept them we must be forceful. If Killinger and his merry band of fools don't get that then this is an ideal opportunity for a demonstration.

And if anons are unwilling to kill Palmer we can just wipe his memory before we let him go.
>>
>>1464599
What exactly has made purging this lab's data urgent because of this recent revelation anyway?

We already knew this lab had samples of OQ drones. So they already had access to drone DNA, to triple-helix DNA to study, DNA of an actually still psionic race.

What exactly makes Cluster DNA so much more awful for humans to have a small sample of. Was anyone this eager to immediately obliterate this lab before?
>>
>>1464609
That seems unnecessary. If we get rid of the parasite, Gilliam can pretty much pass any exam they give him. Sure, they're definitely going to suspect something is afoot and he'll probably get quarantined and such, but with the parasite gone there won't be anything for them to find.
>>
Guys

What if Djin is just a giant Cluster organism frozen over after hanging around Koenig's accretion disk after thousands of years?
>>
>>1464742
Then we trade for the tech to build planet sized super structures.

Hivestar Ramina, here we come!
>>
>>1464742
It seems pretty clear that the object on Djinn is this psionically-blind Cluster-node that finally landed on a planet after however many thousand years.

So why do we want to purge the Cluster in the lab? It has a covenant with our kind (and indeed, still abides by it. It says, anyhow) so it is capable of unified diplomacy.

It knowing that Gilliam is ours, us being able to talk to it presently, and us having mindraped it would seem to indicate that we can probably come to some kind of terms with the current instance here. Which, if we can save it, is valuable because who knows what the disposition of whatever's on Djinn will be.

We should 'ask' (not psionic probe) it for information on why it was hostile by default, and if the hulk on Djinn is the Blind-Cluster that was formed long ago.

Having acquired that information we have a few basic options: blow Gilliam's status as a hive-agent one way or another while trying to sneak samples of this Cluster out, blow Gilliam's status as a hive-agent and cause a massive diplomatic incident with the Union by Blinking a fleet in and fucking shit up,

OR

We could go about trying to broker peace between this Cluster and the Security forces. Providing we can manage to persuade Cluster to cease hostilities, then it will be possible to persuade Security that Gilliam spoke to Them via mind-link and managed to broker an accord. This incident now become another First-Contact with a sentient alien species, Gilliam is safe from being medical-scanned as their selected diplomat, and Hive involvement in the whole matter remains covert. It will be difficult to persuade everyone and negotiate for desirable terms (particularly with Commander Norris) but if have Cluster's cooperation and Gilliam as a front-man we should be able to pull of a grand and ultimately advantageous con.

Shit, we don't even necessarily need Gilliam to decouple from his meatpuppet status in order for this to work (if we can get Cluster's cooperation, which there's no reason we shouldn't given what'll happen to it if it doesn't cooperate), though NOT having a visible spike from a horrifying meat amalgam would certainly help with not being shot on sight.
>>
>>1464330

>Release your grip on the mind
>Ask further questions

Explain the covenant.

Is the mass on Djinn what you launched, to flee the war?

If you continue hostilities, even if you overtake every human in this facility, you will not make it out alive. They would detect you, if you try to infiltrate and mimic your way out. They have initiated lockdown, and will see all of themselves and those surrounding here burn before they let you escape.

The humans do not know of Hive involvement here. However the Hive can, through the guise of this human and with your cooperation (beginning with the immediate cessation of hostilities) greatly improve your odds of survival and successful extrication from this facility.

Does this offer interest you?
>>
>>1464911
This.
>>
Hay guys, why don't we just tell the Thing to congregate its cells in Gilliam's stomach. It's probably durable enough against human stomach acid and scans would probably assume he has a bit meal.
>>
>>1464414
Supporting this >>1464911 Mostly because i think that if we can get this docile instance to communicate with the rest on Djinn, we can save time on possibly hostile reintroductions.
>>
>>1464892
I think you're being a mite optimistic with regards as to how reasonable these guys are. They've just lost at least two good men to this thing, many more have horrifically mauled, and generally been terrified out of their minds by this thing. They're distrustful of Gilliam already and if he comes out of that room with the soldier who he brought along in pieces, hand in hand with a shape shifting horror, they just might shoot him out of principle.

You also forget that these labs are run by the Union in large part to run shady tests outside the reach of their own laws. Do you remember what happened when they tried bringing our drones to a lab like this? They knew full well that their specimens were sentient, but they weren't about to let that stop them from vivisecting our children. What makes you think they won't now, after it's already terrorized them?
>>
>>1464944
We have the thing tell its other parts to get themselves killed,Gilliam vomits it up when I'm another world, one of our pods arrives to pick it up. We can't his write Gilliam off because he's less valuable
>>
>>1464485
You forget that if it wasn't for this parasited maddoc we wouldn't even know this shit was happening.
>>
>>1464892
It killed a bunch of people already.

The soldiers are (quite reasonably) more apt to assume that it can mindfuck people or turn them into separate puppets than they are to accept Gilliam managing to talk them down.

No, this is going to end up with us either helping it escape, going hands off and letting it do as it pleases, or ignoring whatever "covenant" it mentioned and killing it.

>>1464911
This seems a reasonable offer, though you need to consider what we'll do to save it if Gilliam is too fucked up to make it.
>>
>>1464659
I agree with everything in this post and i will support all of this actions.
>>
What if why tell Cluster to make the Spore situation go out of control and we have the Smiths conveniently bust the lab open from the outside?
>>
So im late coming to the thread but:

When we make our creep psionicly sensative we can have it use the thought cloud obscuration techniue that the creatures caring for the barren queen used.
That way our drones dont need to be involved and get confused.

We route around the whole "i cant see where i am" problem by making the hive creep produce minature psionic beacons upon commonly trod paths, kind of like built in road signs.

Any invader should, if this works, not be able to find our base and even if they do it'll be hell mentally to navigate it while our drones are walking around fine.
>>
>>1465272
We can trick it with a request for triggering 'our' spore pod so that it can sprout drones to assist its escape.

Hopefully the spores will simply consume everything in here.
>>
>>1464911
Fourthing cuz yeah.

In regards to our little agent not wanting to be parasitised anymore:

We could just tell him why we are doing this and whats at stake. Chat with the man (and tell him if he accepts we can have his body, probably, put back together).

Somehow i think helping save humanity while an agent of the hive will be paletable. Lets adopt him.

I had been thinking that this thing had true genetic mastery, on another level from us. We can look through DNA and pick out bits to use or inspire an adaptation, but this thing can near instantly take full control of a host (Without brute force physic or organ insertion, just a splash of cells). If we take what the commander said, it took dormant traits out that are still in the DNA and make a cheetah hybrid. And apparently these things existed as a super-mind like an organic Unity.

If the void really is the third, it's all Psionics. It manipulates the world through other life, and is probably the best at it.

So what are we the best at? Love?
>>
>>1465475
If the Void is the best at psionics, and the Cluster is the best at organics, the Hive seems to be a jack of all trades in comparison to them, having mastery over their biology as well as powerful psionics, along with the ability to learn and adapt (research) better than the other two combined.

The Void seems a lot less scary now

>>
>>1465519
Do you mean millions of Hive fleets consisting of billions of ships?
>>
1. Ask it to state its immediate intentions regarding this laboratory.
2. Decide if we can help it achieve those goals.

The only way this ends with everybody not dying is if Cluster stops hostilities, and demands from the humans that they immediately contact the Hive so they can honor their ancient pact. ("They were refugees from the war and wanted no part in it, so we agreed to let them be.")

Alternative ways out are:
1. (Help the humans to) kill Cluster. They aren't psionically networked, they require a "hardline." Anything done here wouldn't reach any others. That's the whole point of their self-blindness.

2. Do nothing and let Cluster and the Union resolve their combat. Good luck to both sides! If the humans win, they get a lesson. If Cluster wins... well... they get to do their thing (which is why we should ask what exactly it wants).

3. Help Cluster kill the humans... somehow. I'm not really sure how we would do this or what would motivate us to do it.
>>
>>1465524
Not really. QD said:

>Ships of sinew in fleets of millions. The stars light up like fireflies in the night as worlds burn to ash and stars flicker and die. A Billion Hive fleets wither away through the march of time.

So I assume at least several of the "billion" dead fleets consisted of millions of ships.

>>
>>1464330
Wow, this is a lot to take in. I’ve taken some time to draft my proposal, which is as follows:

Explain the covenant.

Is the mass on Djinn what you launched to flee the war?

What are your intentions now?

Only once these questions are answered should we release our hold on the mind and offer to aid its extraction from the facility.

>>1464911
This is an okay plan, but I disagree with the last bits.

We still very much want to control the situation here which we cannot do if we allow the Cluster to escape on its own. There is no way we can keep Gilliam as an effective agent at this point as he will be extreme scans and quarantine in any survival scenario. Gilliam should die here, or at best be replicated into a “thing” with a parasite inside to facilitate continued communication while giving plausible deniability that Gilliam was the Hive's point of contact.

We need to bring in drones from the outside.

The Union has caused a major diplomatic incident by continuing to experiment when we warned them not to. Finding out about the lab now actually gives US leverage. We can call up all angry and demand the Union allow us immediate access to the lab on threat of Space War now, and can inform them that their actions nearly unraveled a millions of years old non-intervention covenant between galactic superpowers.

I think we should also broadcast a variation of the following message over the encrypted lab radio communication frequencies (depending on the answers we get to the previous questions):

“The Red Hive has received a distress signal from a fellow signatory of the primordial covenant. Such a signal demonstrates you have disregarded our warning regarding artifacts in the Expanse. Drones are on the way to contain the situation and detain your thinkers. Do not take any further hostile actions against the Cluster. We strongly advise you do not lift containment. If you do so we take no responsibility for the damage the Cluster you have awoken will inflict on your young species.”

We should also broadcast a private message to the other Cluster instances using a language from one of the many species they have absorbed.
>>
>>1464659
This just... so much this. It'd teach the union why they shouldn't fuck with shit in the expanse, while potentially netting us another ally. the only problem I can think of is the union might just glass the planet or something and cut their losses.

It amazes me how fast people will abandon our children, wrther from out womb or otherwise. I say we give ol gil an option: salvation through loyalty to hive or death. We can transfer his mind via psi link to one of those memory crystals, break him out or just mutate him...or rupture his spine via acid, all at his choice.
>>
>>1465552
>Gilliam should die here, or at best be replicated into a “thing” with a parasite inside to facilitate continued communication while giving plausible deniability that Gilliam was the Hive's point of contact.

Yes, basically. I'm fine with writing him off. Maybe we can re-clone him later or something but probably not.

>We need to bring in drones from the outside.

This tips our hand too much if we just show up randomly again. If we can get Cluster to actually call for aid using human technology, that's a good excuse.

>We should also broadcast a private message to the other Cluster instances using a language from one of the many species they have absorbed.

Maybe, but how would we do that? We'd have to broadcast to the other "bodies" Cluster has, since they can't speak to each other unless they are part of one organism. The other bodies would need to have ears to hear with, too.

It sort of sounds like the different bits of sapience in Cluster might be small groups of cells, which raises an interesting point about the nature of sapience and life. Barren Queen said true life was biological-DNA-based, and that Void could notice all of these kinds of life. It was left unsaid that there needed to be a developed brain or nerve cluster or relay-organ for life to be life. Based off this one organism, there are thousands of Cluster instances here, so the quality of being "alive" might be literally tied to having DNA. But even then there's strange outliers like the Canians, the Lithovores, and Theseus. that don't have DNA but are "alive."

>>1465566
Black Queen versus Cluster, fight! Whoever wins, the Union loses.
>>
>>1465573
Oh I agree we should save Gilliam's mind if at all possible. His original body may be toast at this point, but there's no reason we can't stick him in a better one and set him up as a playmate to Elizabeth.
>>
Do note: This Cluster entity was using a hives drone to live in.

What ever this covinent is, it may be just an excuse to this thing. We can't take what it says at face value alone.
>>
>>1465591
Good point that we could have the cluster call for help using human tech. I had not considered that.

>Maybe, but how would we do that?
My guess is that the primary cluster instance probably is either radio sensitive, or has seized one of the radios from the security squads. If all else fails we can instruct the humans to hold one of their radios to the PA system so we can talk to the clusters all at once. That would be dependent on the humans actually listening to our advice, but given that they have no way to keep us from taking over the facility and want to live they will probably do as we ask.
>>
>>1465608
Given we were dominating and fragmenting its mind, I doubt it was lying to us or would be capable of doing so. That being said, the possibility we are being mislead is not at all insignificant, which is why I proposed a plan that would move all the cluster instances out of the Union's shit containment and into our much better (and hopefully friendlier) containment. Trust, but verify.
>>

because getting him out of the current situation and somehow not compromising him as our agent is infinitely more complicated than just having the cluster kill him, clone him, and take away the memory of his arrival and death from all our captives from the station once we get involved.

And yes, I myself am aware of how weird it is that the second option is less complicated and easier for us to do.
>>
>>1465680
It's been explained before. Gilliam will be subject to extreme medical scans if he ever gets the option of leaving the facility. Unless we are okay with this being how parasites are discovered, we need to allow at least the body of Gilliam to die or be turned into a Thing instance.

He may still be useful inside the facility, but given there's blood all over his uniform now and the high chance a traumatic injury has already been suffered he will be hard pressed to get regain the trust of guards.
>>
>>1465692
>>1465693

Im fine with having a chat with him to try recruit him properly, have the thing patch him up to a semi stable state, retreat with our parasite inside of it and then make up a fake thing death while the parasite+bioinstance sneaks out. Reparasite our adoptee later on if he accepted the offer (which, being that he wants to live, he should).

If we let this body "die" then we cant use him as an inside spy anymore. It has to be kept alive. Shits going to need skullduggery.
>>
>>1465691
Might not be, i think the Clusters mind reading is similar to the parasites, they take over by using the spine.
>>1465692
>because getting him out of the current situation and somehow not compromising him as our agent is infinitely more complicated than just having the cluster kill him
No it's not, he's fully capable of getting out without suspicion if we can do it right, it all depends on how much time has passed since the cluster connected.
And why would cloning Gilliam be easier? The labs on lockdown so there's no explanation on how he could have gotten out.
>>1465693
We can just remove the parasite before he leaves and implant memories of him ordering "Takeout"
>>
>>1465706
*they connect by using the spine.
They probably were trying to suck Gilliams brain out but we got in the way.
>>
>>1465706
Gilliam made it apparent that he suspected either of the wounded soldiers of being Things in disguise, and its known that he entered that room with a (now-mangled) private and the suspect. Him getting out of there alive at this point wouldn't make any sense to onlookers unless the Thing wanted him to, which could lead to him being shot on sight.

We've had access to Gilliam's DNA, brainwave pattern, and memories for a long while now, so creating a near-perfect clone that wouldn't remember dying would be a piece of cake. And "quarantine-ing" every single human who's seen him there or knows that he arrived/died and altering their memories to remove him from them is simpler than what we did to the Hope crew to learn how to defuse the nukes in orbit over Leeland.
>>
>>1465709
Something about the psionic equivilent of an entire civilization grabbing you by the balls will make most minor abominations think twice about their course of action.
>>
>>1465714
I disagree.

Plus we could just have the thing terrorise the soldiers at random before it finally gets "caught" so we have plenty of instances of people getting away.

Its not like we haven't pulled off horror flick level shenanigins before, just this time we want the humans to "win".
>>
>>1465714
You do realize the Lab is in path right? How the hell are you going to get the human witnesses?
And Gilliam won't be suspected if we play this right, he can still make it out of the room for it to be believable that he escaped, see >>1464507
>>
>>1465718
Do we though? Letting the Cluster get away and contact us through human radio or something would give us a reason to blink a fleet or two into the system, whip out our bug dick, and show the Union what happens if they ignore our command of "leave the shit in the Expanse alone already, you dumb children!"

Which would be much more useful for us than whatever the humans can stand to learn from this on their own.

Then there's the matter of our hybrids who are about to come into contact with the main cluster of the Cluster.
>>
>>1465706
I agree. Gilliam is useful to us as a mole. Cloning his mind gives us next to nothing. While the Cluster is by far more useful,we should not right of Gilliam just because of that. We can try to claim that we hit our head against something pointy to explain the injury caused by the Cluster jammed something in there. We should try to get the cluster to only infect something that will be less thoroughly scanned(like the intestines) and where extra mass is more easily excusable(like the colon). Then, using the instance in Gilliam,we tell it to get the the instances killed in an obvious manner. The only problem with this plan is i'm not sure if the instances can communicate. If not,we would need to explain our plan while we are still mentally linked, so that the one we are talking to now can spread the word.
>>
>>1465723
Ide rather have an inside agent for the humans than fuck about with the cluster when their landing site is going to wake up soon anyway.

Cause when it wakes up we can just toddle over and use that while retaining our inside agent. Also adoption.
>>
>>1465727
So you want to smuggle out a hostile alien bio hazard by shoving it up Gilliams ass like a drug mule?
>>
>>1465723
How would the cluster know who to call? He just got thawed.
>>1465727
Shouldn't the wound heal itself due to the parasite?
>>
>>1465723
I agree that bringing in a few fleets and yelling at the stupid Union children for ignoring us again is the correct move here if we can give a plausible explanation for our fleet's arrival.

We can seize everyone in the labs as they participated in what we could consider an act of war as part of our "investigation". At that point we could alter memories of Gilliam as appropriate, but even so word he was infected may get out. I think if we clone Gilliam, our best bet is to use him for internal work. There will be other Union mad docs we can parasite.
>>
>>1465731
An emergency broadcast on all frequencies using an unintelligible (to humans) alien language from one of the species the cluster has assimilated should be far more than enough to pop in after a few minutes claiming we intercepted and deciphered a "distress call from one of the Hive's old allies using human tech", so we send "a small task force" (consisting of a couple fleets or so) to "investigate".
>>
>>1465748
Yep, this works. And the Union already knows we have communications tech they know nothing about, so once a fleet is in system we should have little difficulty convincing them we have been in communication with the clusters.
>>
>>1465748
>>1465755
All this depends on Cluster's goals here and if it wants to cooperate or not.
>>
>>1465748
uhhh.
I have no idea if that will work or not.
>>
>>1465743
We cant clone him and still use him

On account of the people in the sealed room would be able to tell. Unless your sure we could definately capture them all, otherwise those people would all be wisked away to black sites for debreif and then the cats out of the bag.

Its a an unwise plan. Not to mention possibly unneccesary due to our parasite being able to heal. Since we still have a connection we have to assume Gilliams brain isnt currently melted.
>>
>>1465757
Which is why we have to establish the Cluster's motives and goals right here and now.

>>1465759
It's more likely to work than somehow trying to get Gilliam out of the situation he's in without every single human in the building branding him as another Thing or scan him and discover our parasite.
>>
Oh, speaking of old Hive allies. What is/was the third species of the Three?
If the Hive is one, and the Cluster is another, how do we know if the Void is a third or if the third became a slave species for the Void? It seems like a rather recurring theme that the Void enslaves others.
>>
>>1465761
I agree in part. I suspect Gilliam's primary usefulness as a mole is coming to a close.

And yes, I want to capture everyone in the facility. It is locked down with starship grade plateing and there is no escape. If we carve through the armor and swarm the facility there is no reason we cannot capture every human on the base.
>>
>>1465766
Depending on if we can convince G or not, we may be able to just remove our parasite for the time being.
>>
>>1465766
They don't need to scan us to prove we are a thing, they can just take a blood sample.
>>
>>1465771
This facility is in the middle of a city.

Even with our current leverage its essentially an attack on a civilian population (even though its not) and a decleration of war. We wont get away with this cleanly.
>>
>>1465774
the humans don't know about our parasites, and have no way of discovering them other than scanning the host, which they would do. They'd find some abnormalities in his blood, sure, but nothing that would lead directly to the Spinepal™.
This situation, however, would lead to a full body scan, if not a headshot on sight, and discovery of our Spinepals™
>>
>>1465782
What?
If they suspect Gilliam of being the thing all we would need is to prove Gilliam doesn't have a triple helix DNA, a blood sample is all that's needed.
>>
>>1465778
So we talk to the Union brass and tell them:

A. We know about the facility.

B. They fucked up majorly and now we need to renegotiate a millions of years old non-interference pact with the species they experimented on.

C. We likely saved them from an extinction level event, again, by initiating communication.

D. They directly disobeyed our primary order, which was to stop fucking with artifacts. If they do not "permit" us to intervene we will do so by force and any attempt to stop us will be considered an act of war.
>>
>>1465790
They already mentioned doing a full medical scan of EVERYONE to make sure they weren't crazy alien mimics whose capabilities of shapeshifting they DON'T KNOW and therefore aren't going to take ANY chances with.
>>
>>1464948
>>1465046

Well the first suggestion if Cluster agrees is going to be that it shifts into something less abjectly horrifying.

As for the rest, the plan will be difficult to pull off mainly because of the reasons you mentioned, but it's the only plan that doesn't involve causing a huge incident and/or blowing our agent's cover.

We'll have to play on their fears of it having ate so much ammo and being so terrifying, actually, but as long as Cluster agrees to not actively assault them I can imagine a deal being worked out. Namely I imagine that we could persuade Cluster to stop attacking them, and in return it agrees to be extricated from the lab (in containment of their choosing), provided beforehand a transmission is sent to a prominent network declaring another First-Contact event such that they'll be present for its transfer into any containment.

And if they do just shoot out of principle then we're back to the options we have right now. Nothing lost.

>>1465552
Actually the idea is to turn this into a first-contact event. Gilliam will be Cluster's declared representative and so he'll be safe from any scan attempts unless they want another incident with an alien species.

The other card we get to play is asking Cluster for what we could do to make the entities on Djinn peaceful (while it's still isolated here in the lab). We'll be able to test its trustworthiness based upon whether that intel rings true.
>>
>>1465794
A. already evident if we attack.

B. not their problem

C. Not provable and they would happily have just nuked it.

D. Its already going to be a war.

We dont want war. The invasion option is our lose condition.
>>
>>1465794
Well, we will always have an alternative option: Informing them that the next time they're about to shove a cosmic fork into a cosmic wall-socket, we are not going to stop them, and will just sit by and watch their species destroy itself. We've got bigger concerns to deal with anyways.
>>
>>1465795
>They immediately forget to do that with the squad.
I think we might have time to plan for the scan, i recall we could disguise our parasites as organs so we could do that.
>>
>>1465813
well... I don't remember enough about stuff like that, so I can't contribute to that planning.
>>
>>1465748
Eh, i like this. It would make the Union shit themselfs even more if we had enough ships, to send a new fleet that isn't part of our "small escort fleet" over Path and make the Union shit themselfs even more.
>>
>>1465816
I specifically remember that our parasites looks like tumors on medical scans and that they can take the place of organs, i think we can have our parasite eat and replace a kidney, wait a set amount of time until we think the scan is done, then move the parasite back to the spine.
>>
>>1465795
The cluster is intelligent and im pretty sure it can selectivly mutate someone. It only has to mutate enough of him to latch onto him and would probably do a better job of it then our parasite since it can be spread out thinner. WHen they go for a blood sample, the CLuster can just not have infected the circulatory system. THe thing went into hibernation in ice for a long time,im sure a very small sample of it can do the same in someones colon for a few days. Honestly, when have you heard of any bodily search procedure that checks the colon that isnt looking for drugs? Gilliam is still salvageable.
>>
>>1465757
If he wants to survive he better co-operate. But i know we should try finding his motives rather then trying to threat it. Or else we are no better then the Void gods.
>>
Before we throw Gilliam into bag, lets give a shot at trying to save our agent.

>gilliam runs out of room, shooting wildy, troopers "save" him from the Thing
>he is suspected ofc
>our agents, spinepals and Theseus sneaky joins into all possible medical teams that could be called to the lab site, once it is opened

If we succeed on taking over the scanners/doctors watching em, we could even sneak the Thing outside.
>>
>>1465832
The labs on lockdown, we can't send agents or anything else.
>>
>>1465830
>>1465828
Combination of these two seems like the best chance of success.

Use the Clusters body to cause randomized havok to throw suspicion of higher intellect, pass the body scans and salvage the entire situation.
>>
>>1465772
>>1465766
Haven't we unlocked psionic impriting yet? Can't we just imprint a command in Gilliam's mind so he won't betray the hive and his new mother?
>>
>>1465844
Psionics always comes with a chance of brain frying. Right now he may not be in the best physical condition to deal with it, so ide rather try reasoning first.
>>
>>1465844
I don't think it's that good, could certainly use it to imprint a desire to take a nap after the medical scan(So our parasite can go back to the spine.)
>>
>>1465813
We can, and we do, so they pass through most scans, but being dunked into a medical tank would definitely expose the parasite no matter how hard we tried to disguise it.

The worry here is that Gilliam is going to take a bath in a medical tank after this, which would expose the parasite. If the parasite was going to be exposed, it would be best if we could blame Cluster for it, so we need a way to blame Cluster for the parasite. Also, once the parasite was exposed, there's no way for us to keep control of Gilliam. They would cut it out and he would be able to act on his own (including ratting us out) or we would have to detonate it and kill Gilliam. So even if we blame Cluster for the parasite, Gilliam is still a lost agent.

The only way he's not a lost agent is if he doesn't get medically scrutinized OR if he agrees to not rat us out and then come back as an agent and we have Cluster take the parasite.
>>
>>1465837
I know, and meant the medical scans that humans that were in labs are guaranteed to end into, once they are freed from lab.

We can always ask the Thing to smash scanners inside the lab.
>>
>>1465853
>but being dunked into a medical tank would definitely expose the parasite no matter how hard we tried to disguise it.
I recall disguising our parasites as an organ would.
>>
>>1465837
How about a Smith?
>>
>>1465848
Tell him that we are the only reason the the Cluster isnt going to kill everyone in the facility, and then likely go on to infect Path because t would see it as the best way to survive. If he sells us out, then the Cluster in him will kill him and escape, since weve seen how fast it can go if it is prioritizing retreat instead of combat.
>>
>>1465857
*Would keep it undetected.
>>
>>1465855
For that i was planing on taking the parasite out and implanting thoughts into Gilliam that he ordered "Takeout" then sending a agent to his home.
>>
>>1465853
What if we have the oppurtunity to remove the cluster sample in Gilliam before(and if) he goes into a medical tank? Goes to the bathroom and vomits it up or craps it out. My colon idea is looking better by the minute. Even if their are guards pointing guns at him while hes doing it,they are only gonna hear a plop or two.
>>
>>1465863
Any in depth medical scans will be more than just a dip in a medical tank - they will likely be looking specifically for things exactly like our parasite. I am not completely confident in their ability to pass undetected under that kind of scrutiny.
>>
>>1465877
I specifically remember organ parasites being capable of passing medical scans.
Someone should check the ask cause that's where i read it.
>>
>>1465877
Provided we dont encounter a medical tank level scrutiny until after we leave the lab it should be fine so long as we pass the scans here and now.
>>
>>1465880
Well it actually depends on what they're looking for.
>>
>>1465887
In that case, that would likely assume that the whole body is infected(shapeshifter) and mostly look at blood samples. In which case, just minimize the parasites interference and have the Cluster g into hibernation.
>>
>>1465892
Or they might just torch him with flamethrowers the moment they suspect the whole body is infected, leading to us losing Gilliam anyways.
>>
>>1465897
What i meant was that if they though the body was infected, they would think it would be the entire body. I wasn't saying they would assume he was infected and then get blood samples.

Either a dedicated scanning machine like that or a full fledged medical tank, which is itself actually not that commonly used outside of front line military situations or for serious surgery. You don't typically go into a medical tank unless you're practically already dead by our own modern medical science, or the doctor can't figure out what's wrong with you any other way.

I think we should go for Star News next and try to steer the questions into we want. Hell I can't wait for them to try to challenge our claim to the Expanse or ask about the Black Queen since we still have some bombshells to drop.
>>
>>1466774
I agree. The interview went really well and the reactions should be great. Personally I'm really looking to seeing how the Valen respond to learning that the vision of a dead world we implanted is actually a memory of the Skyl homeworld. It may make our standoffish actions with them during our first meeting more understandable.
>>
>>1466408
It is really fucking simple from a logical standpoint, we let the thing murder FUCKING everyone in this science lab OTHER than Gilliam. Blink a fleet in above world and pull them both out, then nuke the site from orbit to hide the evidence, which can be EASILY justified by telling the union that we fucking WARNED them to not fuck with ancient artifacts,
>>
>>1467065
>Nuking a major city.

I'm all for intervention here with drones, but nuking a city even when we warned the Union not to research this tech would remove any possibility of peace. It would be a great shame to put all our peaceful diplomatic overtures to waste.
>>
>>1464414
It seems like most people want to at least learn the following from the Cluster before/if we release it:

What the covenant is,
What the mass on Djinn is,
What the Cluster wants.

However, we are much more divided on what to do after we finish interrogating the Cluster (which makes sense, since the answers to those questions will help shape how we want to proceed).

Perhaps we should proceed with getting answers to these questions rather than trying to plan everything out super far in advance?

I hope QD's able to make a mid-week thread. Of course there's no pressure at all; his health and enjoyment obviously takes priority over the Quest.
>>
>>1467150
anon. from previous descriptions this thing should be in the center of a hive city like structure. one of our ships main weapons is a Plasma lance, we can core that goddamn lab out of the city like nothing, and as far as the union public would know we would be justified, in our last interview we literally told the union public that the shit the union has been researching is a threat to all sentient life..
>>
>>1463336
Huh, in kinda seems in retrospect in was talking to us, not Gillian and was trying to get us to help them
>>
>>1466647
I'm expecting them to flip out about us admitting we're good friends with what they consider to be genocidal robots.
>>
You know what i find interresting about this section? We manage to roll a 100 when Lyle fought us when he was trying to pounch our drones and now we just rolled another 100 after a alien tried to snatch our adoptee minds.

One would think that mom doesn't like, or is really vicious, when someone tries to take her children, be then adopted or not, from her.
>>
>>1467348
Using the Plasma lance would certainly be far preferable to "nuking the site from orbit" as you had originally written. I'm still worried it could look like the start of an alien invasion, though, and that some PDF yahoo would see aliens glassing his city and begin a shooting war with us.
>>
QD posted the A.I. quest on his twitter i'm gonna read it while waiting for the next update.
>>
>>1467723
If we decide to use ship-borne weapons on a major population center, we either need permission or to clearly state our intentions beforehand to minimize itchy trigger fingers. Wee don't need another enemy.
>>
>>1467753
Even a "surgical" strike would kill a lot of humans. This lab is several floors in the middle of a massive ziggurat. Unless "plasma lances can't melt steel beams" using those weapons would collapse the building and cause the deaths of hundreds, of not thousands, of civilians. It might be possible to evacuate the surrounding residential complexes, but that would take so long we would be better off just dumping drones into the facility at that point.
>>
>>1467639
Weve shown that we care fro our children. While we would throw them into the meat grinder, even the adopted ones ,we do not do it lightly, especially the adopted ones.
>>
>>1467803
Right, that's why we need to tell them what we're doing before we kill a bunch of humans, if we decide to. If we use ship weapons on population centers without telling them beforehand they are NOT going to be happy with us. The right news spin could turn it into a war.
>>
>>1467833
a war we would win..
>>
>>1468096
We could certainly win a war with the humans. However, it may not be quite as easy as we anticipate. It could also cause some in the Union to try to find and ally with our "great enemy" to save themselves.

It would also be a distraction and comparative waste of our forces compared with the threat of the OQ.
>>
>>1467753
We literally have an armada over their capitalworld, and a fleet over all the rest, while the unions paltry main fleet is busy over mars TRUST me shem we could Stomp these fucking idiots and they would not even have time to respond. let alone put up a fight
>>
>>1468125
the great enemy they have Literally no knowledge of how to contact? as well as being so resistant to psionics that they would need to be near an actual shard of a crystal god? Which yo seem to misunderstand something about, YOU CAN"T FIGHT THE CRYSTAL GODS even researching the methods how just gives them a vector to target you, the safest shield is ignorance, and Genociding their slave races
>>
>>1468140
I agree that ignorance is the best shield. The Union may break that shield if they start trying to use the void shards against us. We have already implied that the Void shards are weapons of great power. They may throw everything into void research in a desperate gamble against the invading aliens. It would backfire horribly for the humans, but there is a risk they could somehow empower the Void like they almost did at Nowhere.

I also agree we could crush the Union military fairly easily. I am just concerned we won't get everything, and the remains could do significant damage or go do stupid Void research.

If we invade the humans may also start looking for the OQ as a possible ally against us. They only have the Red Queen's word the OQ is omnicidal and their certain failure to recruit the OQ to their side would still give the OQ human tech.

There are too many risks and unknowns to make a war worthwhile, even though we would assuredly win the war.
>>
>>1468178
Additionally, the #1 question every Union military planner will be thinking of is "what do we do if the orbiting fleet opens fire." The Union has had enough time to develop at least rudimentary fallback plans and contingency efforts in the event we invade. They will likely attempt to fall back to hidden bases and possibly conduct hit and run attacks while bringing their fleets out of mothballing (if possible). They would also insurgency efforts against us.

While with time we could crush their hidden military fleets and the insurgents, it still would be a distraction and could leave us in a weaker position against our more formidable opponents. War is an option for us, but it would be costly enough we should avoid it if at all practical.
>>
>>1468127
Why would you want war though? Seriously, what do we gain that isn't easily accessible via other means without invalidating the last years (in real time) worth of diplomacy with human factions?

Want a Cluster sample? We're on our way to find one in the expanse.
Want them to take our warnings seriously? Let them touch the hot stove and see what happens, sometimes that's the only way to learn.

We stand to lose out of our alliance with the Commonwealth and the crystal shard that it's worth.
We stand to lose favour with our main ally Theseus for torpedoing the peace with the Union we promised him and also tainting any efforts he might make in that direction because now he's associated with the bugs that kill Union civilians from orbit whenever they feel like it and are currently killing humans by the hundreds of thousands because we're really good at war.
Finally, the actual war that all these problems stem from, a third front that we gain nothing from besides cleaning up a mess that doesn't involve us in the first place. We'll do well and we'd win, I agree but this wouldn't be a war that we can walk away unscathed from.

Why?

I wonder if we can trade adaptions with Cluster.

Here's something that i've thought of:the triple helix represents three species, correct? Well,we are one,the Cluster is another, and several people have theorized that the Void Crystals are the third. However, both the cluster and the hive have a triple helix, while the Void Crystals obviously dont. That means that either they are not the third species(which raises the question of what the hell is) or they were, but somehow "ascended" beyond it. Im hoping it is the former just so we can get another potential ally.If they were one of the three, then what was the cause of the war between such ancient precursers that were supposedly allies?

Gotta be careful with that one. That's how you get void crystals forcing themselves into reality to fuck your shit in.

We never even looked at their genetics.
>>
>>1468943
Their physical manifestations are literal voids of anything measurable.
>>

But their physical infections of biological material bear resemblances to our own biotech materials, albeit crystallized.
>>
>>1468911
I'm imagining it went something like:
"Let's seed a bunch of races in the galaxy!"
"Ok, cool."
[time passes]
"Hey, what if we were like ACTUAL gods to them? Let's just hook them all up to our network (and maybe make them worship us)."
"How about no?"
"Well then maybe you're just too weak psionically to handle it haha."
"No that's wrong wtf."
"Check it out, I did it already."
"Stob."
"No."
"Stop or I'll have to stop you."
"Try me, you're just some overgrown bugs and we control the psionic sphere. I'm in charge here."
[Angry chittering, warfare begins. Turns out the psionics were right in being more powerful.]
>>
>>1468953
Actually that's not true. The physical manifestation is the blob thing, the crystals are nothing more than conduits for their will.
>>
>>1469041
I'm curious as to how much of the worship mentality of the infected is derived from the crystals, or from the organisms themselves.
>>
>>1469041
>Turns out the psionics were right in being more powerful

>The Void was right

This is heresy of the highest order.
Clearly you are a defective thinker. We are already planning how to defeat the Void and show once and for all the Hive is the superior species.

ignore the billions of dead hives
>>
>>1469051
You'd have to study an infected individual. Maybe check Talgo.
>>
>>1469066
We should start a cult on Talgo and have the Hive cultists fight the (suspected) Void cultists.
>>
>>1469063
Actually while I doubt that verison of the events the reality is the Void is horribly ass ravaged by the war to the point they made a cult built around killing demons that are also death cults. So the old hives must have done a shit ton of damage. Also, a little tidbit nobody seems to realize, is that (while powerful) they seem horribly limited to the point they have to rely on inferior lifeforms to do stuff.
>>
>>1469111
Mom really did a number to the Voids servant races.
>>
>>1469111
I agree. I suspect our claim to the Union that the war lulled due to mutual exhaustion is truer than we knew.

This actually makes me incredibly nervous about the cluster. Unlike us they retained full knowledge of the past and all the creatures and biological data they have absorbed. They may have remained mostly undamaged by the war and their biological mastery exceeds our own. If they realize how weak we are compared to the old hives they may move against us and the void both. That could be especially dangerous if they are able to "regrow" their eyes and psionic abilities.
>>
>>1469272
We have a ridiculous tech advantage over Cluster to the point he'd be stupid to challenge us and we have access to Unity's help who is completely immune to Cluster's biological bullshit.
>>
>>1469339
How do we know we have a tech advantage over the cluster? They may retain memories of all their tech from the days of the ancient hives while we have had to develop our own. We have no idea what they can do.

We are definitely more powerful than them now, and probably will still be more powerful even if the full Cluster on Djin awakens, but without further information we cannot guarantee that will be the case. That's why I want to isolate the cluster here and learn more about them before we wake up the main group.
>>
>>1469378
While I don't know exactly what tech it has, the tech we do have is perfect for dealing with it. Also you do realize we could just search it's mind for what it's capable of. It's not hard.
>>
>>1469416
Fair enough. The Nano disassembles especially would be very effective against this
>>
Just going to lay something out here:
If we glass the lab in spite of the city above, the Union is going to war with us because we just attacked a population center, reasons be damned.
Maybe we'd stomp them, or maybe they'd pull a Nowhere and give themselves to the Void gods since the alternative is annihilation at our hands.

Point is that there is no possible way we could glass the lab without triggering a war with the Union. If we kill a bunch of civilians, there isn't a human in the Union or Commonwealth who'd assume that it was anything but an atrocity. It wouldn't "lend credence to our demands about the artifacts", it would horrify every human who saw it and brand us as truly evil creatures that attacked an ally's civilians unprovoked.
>>
>>1469579
I'm not sure war is 100% likely because the Union may think we had a good reason to intervene (like Nowhere), but I do agree that War would be far more likely than not if we do glass the lab. At a minimum the local PDF would almost certainly attack us. I think we should seize the lab with drones and take all the lab technicians and staff, as well as cluster specimens, with us and torch everything that remains. But employing ship weaponry goes too far.
>>
>>1469579
We're not going to fucking glass the lab.
>>
>>1469616
I sure hope not. Glassing the lab would be stupid as hell.
>>
>>1469041
I don't think they are necessarily right or more powerful.

It seems cluster and void took the path of extremes, whereas the hive took the middle road. The balanced way. There seem to be pros and cons to each of the three paths. I think there might be either some sort of rock-paper-scissors style dynamic between the three, or the path of the Hive is the superior choice since it seems to have the least limitations and the best of both worlds.
>>
>>1470198
We need to make sure the Void is the third race.

Maybe the Void was the threat that broke the three races, Hive, Cluster/Mimic, and a third unknown?
>>
>>1468213
We lose the constant fucking distractions we are having Right now because the dumb cunts can't handle not poking the big spooky artifacts from eldritch civilizations
>>
>>1470308
And I guess fighting an entirely new war against a potential ally when we're already at war with two other enemies isn't distracting at the least?
>>
So, I guess there's no midweek thread today or tomorrow?

That's disappointing but, all things considered, more than understandable.
>>
>>1470403
They're not going to be an ally but shouldn't aim to be their enemy either.
>>
>>1470828
We might be able to make them into an ally eventually. It depends on how successful our diplomacy, blackmail, infiltration, and mind control is. The Valen are Union allies and they had a worse start with humans than we have had.

Also, if the OQ really starts fucking them up they may also request an alliance out of desperation.
>>
>>1470834
Also, worlds other then Gemini may like us if we save their asses. Gemini has suffered riots and rampant paranoia and fear because of our fleet being in orbit, but their other worlds wont have as set of public opinion on us yet. If we get enough of them on our side, the general consensus of the Union could become "well, apparently were were asking for that faux-invasion of our capitol".
>>
>>1470834
It's more likely for the Union to join the side of the Void than to become our ally. That sort of alliance you're expecting is nothing short of a pipe dream in the short term (meaning months). Majority of the allies and supporter we'll get from the Union are going to be defectors who hate the Union and criminals so an alliance is a bad idea.
>>
>>1470903
If we were limited to "regular" diplomatic channels you would be right. However, we have a vast breadth of abilities and attributes that augment our diplomatic efforts.

We have blackmail material that when combined could bring down the Union government without our firing a shot.

We have the ability to create an army of "Anderson" level salesman to advocate for us.

We have the ability to create near perfect sleeper agents and infiltrators for all levels of media and the government.

We can psionically control populations at various levels of subtlety and effectiveness.

We have an ascendant quantum AI whose original purpose was manipulating the masses working with us as a close ally.

And we have priceless technology we can offer as an immense benefit for joining with us.

We have far more diplomatic tools in our arsenal if we count our unconventional abilities and assets, and as such we could perhaps broker at least a mutual defense agreement with the Union in the next few months.
>>
>>1470842
I wonder what the forces of New Tokyo2, were we confronted the OQ's forces think of us.
My bet is that once the parliment meetting and our interview reach then they will be one of the phew Union worlds to not dislike us too much.
>>
>>1470924
A few of those could completely cripple Union-Hive relations, a couple would only make us more suspicious, and the rest would take a lot of time and strong arming into an treaty like you want would only make them resent us more. Not to mention there's nothing left they have to offer us that we couldn't get some other way.
Really an alliance has no value to us and does us no favors.
>>
>>1470953
More meatshields, scientists who can didle around with void crystals without it spreading like wildfire through the minds of their population(though once the scientists get infected, zap 'em and bring in another batch),we have less to worry about on another front. While the Union have far more to gain if they ally with us, we dont gain nothing from being allies with them.
>>
If we ever get a option to ally with the Union i won't vote for it. But i'm also not in favor of going full exterminatus on then. I'm okay with a trade deal or a non agression contract but bo alliance. I would rather keep our Heretic, Theseus alliance and not include the Union in it
>>
>>1471345
I'm pretty sure any alliance with the Union would be much more like our current alliance with the Commonwealth against a mutual foe than our Theseus/Heretic relationship. The only way we could conceivably trust the Union to the extent we trust Theseus and Heretic is if we end up parasiting most or all of the governing council - which will probably never happen for a multitude of reasons.
>>
>>1471345
I don't think people want an alliance in the same style as the one we have with Theseus and Heretic.
What people are referring to when they say "alliance with the Union" is joint military exercises against a common foe in a similar manner to our operations with the Commonwealth, even then it'll be different and more limited in comparison due to the Union's lack of unified leadership and republic induced schizophrenia (from our perspective).
>>
>>1471362
>>1471369
Uh people were talking about alliance and i wrongly though they were trying to have the same kind of relationship we had with Theseus and Heretic.

I would rather give that spot to the Valen then to the Union. And the only reason i'm not giving spot to the Commonwealth is well because like the Union they are still humans.
>>
>>1471458
We can't have that super close knit relationship with the Valen for the same reasons we can't have it with the Union or the Commonwealth and it isn't because of some flaw with humanity specifically. It is because they are a nation of individuals. Individuals in a nation come and go, they are affected by their own tiny needs and desires, constrained by their limited perspective.

We are Mother, our mind spans the stars and we are in a constant state of self improvement at the genetic level. We only appear to be a nation to humans because of the sheer scale of our existence. Even if some individual humans can understand this fact, comprehend it completely and act accordingly, their nation states are incapable of engaging us as an individual engages another individual. Theseus is the same as us, that's why our relationship is as good as it is.
>>
>>1471149
Yup. You have nothing. Especially since we have better meatshield (Union is pretty low value here) and scientists will easy to get.
>>
>>1471589
There's no reason to exclude a well developed economy from future exploitation by the hive. Provided diplomacy remains an option the Union can potentially become useful in any number of ways, be they industrial, technological, military, etc.

A close alliance like we have with Theseus or Heretic isn't what anyone wants, but alliances and treaties can span any number of issues and be massively advantageous to us for (among other reasons) what anon listed.
>>
>>1471589
The Hive's biggest weakness is mental inertia and lack of innovation due to being a single individual. Importing human scientists, like Elizabeth, enables us to bring a new point of view to all our research that our thinkers can never achieve, no matter how autistic we make them.
>>
>>1471589
>>1471635
sorry, I meant "adopting" rather than importing. She's our precious daughter now, after all.
>>
>>1471589
In addition to what others have said, the Union may have unique and valuable tech like the Commonwealth has its ground based shields and Canderon-gravity warheads. We need better relations with the Union to get that juicy tech.

Is that what you're referring to?

We aren't after a defense pact with the Union. We're after trade, peaceful relations, and cessation of their experiments right now. You're right when you say it's not an alliance, which is why all of us anons keep saying we want treaties not an alliance.

Not all of them. There are few said they want an alliance despite how impractical it is.
>>
>>1472026
Ohhh, I see where you're coming from now.

We'll mainly be protecting our annexed planets in the Expanse, not Union worlds. We may opportunistically defend their holdings if the OQ attacks (for good PR), but I don't think anyone's mentioned being contractually bound to do so. Neither would they be expected to defend our annexed worlds in the Expanse. They get the better end of the deal, because we'll provide a de-facto shield against the OQ.

As a separate matter we would like formalized trade treaties and such with them.

Where's the problem?
>>
>>1472088
Well we wouldn't want the OQ to get a foot hold on another one of our flanks. If it looks like OQ would take a major Union world then I think we should intervene.
>>
>>1472148
We will intervene whenever the OQ attacks a human world if for no other reason than that we absolutely cannot afford to let her get her hands on human tech.

>>1472169
I think than rather than selling planets, we can serve as amazing middle men to the Valen. If we set up a trade post at Tannhauser and set no taxes on goods (maybe tax on profits) the Valen will make a killing selling to us, unity, and the commonwealth and others. That would be far less expensive for us than selling planets. We can also sell/trade raw goods and materials because our drones produce them much more efficiently than humans.
>>
>>1472208
Yes, although you got the name wrong.
New Tokyo is a city,
The planet is Path,
The star system is Virgo
>>
>>1472210
Why not do both? If you think in our abilitie to terraform planets we can create trade routes by terraforming a Baren planet or covering it in hive creep like mom used to do, charge a tax for a working gate over the planet and other former of taxes such as, ships, cargo etc... i think we would be creating a very lucrative and symbiotic relationship with the Valen if you did this.
>>
>>1472183
Actually yes. The Commonwealth wants to conquer the Union militarily, the Valen want to conquer them economically, Void wants to conquer them psychically, and we want to annex the territory they claimed dibs on.
And comparably from how we treat other nations our interactions are very passive agressive.
>>
>>1472248
If we weren't hurting for resources so much we could do this. As it stands, terraforming a planet costs millions of nutrients and takes 2 weeks. That is amazingly fast and cheap by human and Valen standards, but expensive and slow by our own. For such an investment the hive would need a truly massive influx of resources from the Valen to compensate us for not using the planet ourselves. I doubt the Valen could afford that
>>
>>1472283
The second we build the ships that were requested is the second becomes completely unviable.
>>
>>1472299
What? If we build the ships we will be LOW on resources. I am arguing we cannot afford more teraformong now especially if we are just going to give the planet away. How does us being low on resources and unable to terraform make my argument no longer viable??
>>
>>1472320
It becomes unviable because we don't have the resource reserves to terraform planets and maintain all the ships and we can't simply mothball them without special facilities to store them. There also the fact that just sending the ships out to attack doesn't solve the problem because a war for us will still take days.
>>
>>1472320
So essentially it's unviable because it takes too long to terraform and the ships upkeep will cost too much and there's no easy way to get rid them unless we scrap them.
>>
>>1472208
To be fair,OQ barley sent anything. What I mean is if OQ brings in a real invasion fleet or enough that the Union will not be able to prevent massive causalities.

>We're after trade
>A post scarcity society AFTER TRADE
anon..
It would be more accurate to say that YOU are after trade good sir. And because of what? i men seriously WHY we need to resolve this bullshit with the humans quickly so that we can start dealing with auntie. you know why? in the time we waste fucking around with the humans she is building fleets, every day every hour every microsecond she has to prepare her fleets without us attacking is to HER ADVANTAGE. we don't need the humans when it comes down to it. We could wipe their government in an instant, BUT anons like you won't let that happen because you think you are political geniuses and give them more things .WITHOUT having the understanding that we already have them by the balls the literally cannot say no to our demands. the commonwealth is pushing into their territory and we have a fleet over every world in the expanse including their capital, you don't need to have read the prince to know that is checkmate.
>>
>>1472814
Post-scarcity at the citizen level, not the national level.

We can, of course, do everything ourselves. Or we can trade 10n worth of surgery and implants for 10000n worth of food. The fundamental basis of trade is that both sides profit, and the hive is perfectly positioned to offer such trades.
>>
>>1472283
>>1472299
I know it isn't a good idea to be put in action at the moment. Just because i want to or it can be a good idea doesn't mean we should do it.

For now working as a middle man for Valen, Union, Commonwealth, Theseus and possibly Heretic and the Skyl is already a good thing, so they can expand their market to other civilizations.
>>
>>1472417
>To be fair,OQ barley sent anything.

Because she was just scouting. And wasn't expecting for our intervention. She maybe recoverying from her attack against mom and her recent incurssion against Theseus and the one she had sended to Raligah.
>>
>>1472814
So anon if we're post scarcity, how are our canderon reserves looking?
>>1472840 makes good points about trading things the hive does well for excess supplies. I, for one, haven't forgotten that we have a big fleet order coming in soon that we don't yet have the infrastructure to support. We're gonna be hurting for nutrients soon, and until we get our production up anything we can do to keep our fleets operational is to the good.
>>
>>1472864
Definitely strongly agree with this. We need to start building nutrient infrastructure as soon as possible throughout the Expanse. And if at all possible (I suppose QD can say if it is reasonable or not), we should trade implants or medical care for huge amounts of energy credits which we can then spend buying absurd amounts of nutrient-high food.

We could even trade with "space-Monsanto" directly; I'm sure they would exchange tremendous amounts of nutrients for a glimpse of the least of our genetic engineering abilities.
>>
>>1472864
>>1472904
Some ideas for generating cash/nutrients:

We call up the Valen and give them the following conditions with regards to the Skyl home system: We get the gravity well(s) (Aral - which would make a passable nutrient base due to the metal->nutrient fungus we found), the Valen get the rest of the system. We tax them roughly as much as the Union were going to (we may wish to make them suspect this tidbit was Lee's idea), and all they need to do to comply with Hive 'laws' is prevent anyone from moving artifacts through their gate, without us first checking the artifacts (I don't know about you guys but I don't see Skyl dildos as worth kicking up a fuss about. Crystals, however...). Ideally our fleet in the area will make a quick check of the asteroid belt in order to detect any obvious artifacts, and we can make it clear to the Valen that we're just checking to make sure there's nothing that can "speak" hiding in the rocks.

We call up, as an anon suggested, one or more space Monsantos and trade gengineered seeds/plants for a fuckton of nutrients/credits.

We call up the Commonwealth and offer to do the same (medieval farmers growing super-wheat). Alternatively we can go for the Nuclear Option (because I fully expect it will either fuck us in the long run, or fuck the Commonwealth in the long run. and not in a good way) and offer their ailing Emperor either biological immortality, or X amount of additional years to his lifespan (perhaps with the body of a 40 year old instead of a 440 year old), if he can hook us up with our desired nutrients. From the sounds of things, he probably intends to cheat death for as long as possible, seemingly at any cost.
>>
>>1472951
Actually any Skyl artifact could easily be worth 10,000 credits just as a starting price even dildos. So I'll disagree heavily on letting any artifacts out of the system since we could build so museums to get some credi income in.

>>1472951
I like your ideas, but I disagree about the Tannhauser system. If we allow any artifacts out of the system at all it will encourage treasure hunters which is the last thing we want. Giving up control of space also gives up control of the metal rich debris field.

I think a better approach would be to just mine the ore ourselves and give the Valen a bunch of ore for free with the understanding we will split the profits. We would both stand to make a huge amount of money this way as our drones work for free and are way more efficient than the Union. We can also offer to make the system a haven where the Valen can openly trade tax free with entities the Union doesn't like (like Unity and the Commonwealth). Again, we can avoid taxing goods and just take a chunk of the profits. Everyone wins and we don't give up a possibly valuable area of our space to foreign exploitation.
>>
>>1473195
>Giving up control of space
Literally nobody has advocated for that. We want to allow foreign mining in Kerik Ashka (as long as they follow the totalitarian rules) while also mining it ourselves because it's better overall. Why do people keep falling for the "its better to mine it ourselves" meme when in this situation it's completely untrue?
>>

>>1472951
>We get the gravity well(s) (Aral - which would make a passable nutrient base due to the metal->nutrient fungus we found), the Valen get the rest of the system.

If we only grant non-exclusive mining rights to the debris field I have no problem with that as long as we scan for relics. When I read "the Valen get the rest of the system" I assumed that included the debris field. I am not comfortable giving them all that to own, but letting them mine and pay taxes on it is fine as long as we can still mine ourselves. It will take a very long time for the resources to be depleted after all.
>>
>>1473451
Instead of taxing them, we could offer them some deal like "for every x minerals you mine out of our system we want x nutrients in return. Plus, we get to jump through your hypergates for free. Also, we have 99% less trade restrictions than your other friends in our systems."
>>

>>1473673
You two do realize why money was invented right?
>>
>>1473720
Just let them have this.
>>
>>1473720
To the Hive I imagine money is an unnecessary middle step in most transactions. If we want to be paid in credits and use the credits to buy food that would be fine. However, that could cause inflation in some food sectors so we may be better off negotiating payment in X tons of nutrients per Y tons of metals mined than asking for credits for each specific amount of metal mined.

Credits do have more utility of use, though, so either could work.
>>
>>1473735
I think the optimal choice will depend on the scale of the other entity.

Telling John Q Minor Miner to pay in raw food would be silly, since he'd have to arrange to transport it. Just bill him in credits.
On the other hand, Major Miner Incorporated can easily afford to arrange transport and even do some digging around so they can get wholesale foodstuffs and come out feeling like they got a better deal. Let them pay in food.
>>
>>1473727
I begun to wonder what happened to playerbase. Credits are for the most part are a better choice since we can use them to buy what we want whether it be metal (which we're never going to do because it's pointless), nutrients, planets, or tech and taxing metals is a deal breaker because the metals they mine is their livelihood. There is also the fact that credits are just easier for them to produce and give to us.
>>
>>1473758
Either credits or nutrients are fine as payment. We are hurting so bad for nutrients at the moment I had figured payment in credits was essentially payment in nutrients but with additional inefficient steps (at least for bulk operations).

No one is questioning that energy credits generally have more utility than getting paid in food.
>>
>>1473781
Well there is a simple solution but it require us to at the very least delay the ships people wanted to build and have access to a lot of metal.

>>
Lmao just say "pay us X credits or Y kCal in nutrients" what's the big deal. As long as we can communicate to other races what a "nutrient unit" is (so they don't send us high-fiber stuff) it's fine either way, right?

Extra bonus round: this basically boosts any kind of agricultural industry.
>>
>>1473828
I can't access the archive to check but the deficit I believe would be around 7 million. The "simple" solution I thought of is we build barebones ships filled to the brim with solar collector modules. Now the ship we could produce the fastest is a corvette taking 1 day while the more efficient choice, the hive ship, takes a full week so we're likely to use the corvette for this since we can build tens of thousands per day. So such a corvette would produce 400N and in order to bring our net income per day to a safe amount (lets say 1 million nutrients) which would require us to build 20,000 ships. As long as we have the resources we could potentially implement this fix however the ship would be unable to fight or mine because of how fragile they would be.
>>
>>1473882
We're an insect hivemind. We're basically the zerg. We don't need anything that isn't nutrients or tech to help us kill OQ and the crystals.

Riiight, that's what happened. Sounds legit.

Anyway, you're right that everyone agrees we need to start raiding the OQ asap. That's why we're building fleets that are designed specifically for that.

In the meantime, on account of being the head of an interstellar superorganism, we can take as much time resolving this issue as necessary because it occurs concurrently with our productive endeavors towards raiding the OQ.

That guy is me, and no one seems to complain about those designs, although there were a few people bitching about "muh cost" when they were voted into production.
>>
>>1477687
Most of the ships that are going to be built are "state of the art" ships with everything put into them. Which is why we'll starve, the we are building are too defense focused and expensive to actually be viable for raiding duty.
>>1478608
Nobody actually looks at the designs or does the math when it's time to build ships so why would anybody else. I mean I'm trying to understand why someone would want to put Ram Keel on a ship to use against ships made out of spores that eat everything they come in contact with or put Plasma Lances (weapons that flat out ignore shields and armor) and Blasters (weapons that debuff shields and armor) on the same ship when they have the worse synergy of all the weapons we have. This is poorly thought out design all round.
>It's actually the same guy who made the Heavy Fleet designs, and the Heavy Warrior design, and the Ghost Beetle design.
And I'm the guy who suggest in the ask to QD about the Gravity reflection tech. Like I give a fuck about what "acomplishments" you've made that literally anybody could have done. What I care about is the design I'm looking at right now makes no sense and needs to be either fixed or thrown out.
>>1478384
If I were to to build a raiding fleet it would mostly be made of strikecraft, probably fighters. I remember that one of the question early on asked about the Scout corvette was "how many scout corvettes would we need to instantly kill a a Union ship with their plasma lances" and the answer was 20. So since scout corvette only two Plamsa Lances both on the fixed mounts, that would mean 20 fighters equipped with Plasma Lances could instantly kill any ship. Having some Ion Cannon fighters too would be good since it fucks with sensors preventing any effective counterattacks. Some Gunships with Advanced Psionic Disruptors to prevent communication between her ships and to fire Disassemblers for an instant kill. And a corvette with a Microrip Drive to insert the fleets 1 light day away so they can enter cloaked with no way of being detected.
Now the way I'd use these ships is that I'd have the fighters all positioned and have designated targets then when the gunships disrupt her relays have the Ion cannons blind the sensors and the Plasma Lances each target the optimal points for dealing maximum damage in the shortest amount of time. Of course this would tigger a response fleet so we should have a few pods secretly inserted to destroy some of the juicy targets in those systems the response fleets are coming from, while she's distracted, to inspire confusion and paranioa in her and have her overthink herself while we effortlessly take her system.
>>
>>1479407
Honestly, the best synergy for our ships, at least when spinal mounts are concerned, are linear particle beams and railguns. Both buff each other and get stronger the larger the ship is.

Personally, I strongly support building more cheap corvettes. They can pack a lot of firepower into a cheap and disposable frame, and we have a relatively small amount of corvettes/interdiction support given that our "light fleets" do not include any corvettes.
>>
>>1479658
I would rather focus on fill up our systems with fighter. Also the weapons with p of the best synergy are the Ion Cannons/Disassemblers and the Blaster with the most powerful one two combo against shielded ships since it could easily take down any ship.
>"light fleets" do not include any corvettes.
I never understood why it didn't since corvettes cover all the weaknesses of the cruisers (which deal the majority of our damage) by protecting them.
Though I stopped going to the talk page to discuss things along when I started to realize highly autistic retards with shit naming sense were doing most of the designs which is what really matter there. Pretty much the one of the only designs I thought decently of was the Pirate Cruiser which was a pretty damn elegant design and more economic then the ships the players they wanted to build.
>>
>>1480538
Ion Cannons do nothing to shields, Blasters are okay against them. How can the combo easily take down any ship?

That aside they hardly deal any damage on their own and against Hive/Bio ships their debuff is extremely reduced.

>>1479407
>I mean I'm trying to understand why someone would want to put Ram Keel on a ship to use against ships made out of spores that eat everything they come in contact with or put Plasma Lances (weapons that flat out ignore shields and armor) and Blasters (weapons that debuff shields and armor) on the same ship when they have the worse synergy of all the weapons we have.

So none of the Anti-Hive designs have Plasma Lances and Blasters. In fact...I don't think any of them have Plasma Lances at all.

As for putting a Ramming Keel on a ship to use against OQ ships, only the Anti-Hive Corvette has a Ramming Keel. This was done because they've got the highest troop-cap to cost ratio, and our boarders are where our tech advantage against the OQ becomes most obvious. It's unlikely that the OQ's creep will become an issue in the timescales that battles operate on, but even if it did the thing's also got a Fusion Core (for detonating) and will be lodged into an enemy ship.
>>
>>1481749
OQ has no shields. She is our main threat.
>>
>>1481779
Yes. Okay. Ion Cannons still do very little physical damage and their debuff is ineffective against organic ships such as the OQ's.
>>
>>1481882
They're also very short ranged on top of all of that.
>>
>>1481749
>Ion Cannons do nothing to shields, Blasters are okay against them. How can the combo easily take down any ship?
Read what I said.
>against shielded ships
Blasters shutdown shields Ion Cannons shoot their lightning and kill it.
>That aside they hardly deal any damage on their own and against Hive/Bio ships their debuff is extremely reduced.
Incorrect there are Emp guns that exist shut off entire parts of your brain and Hive ships have a large number of sensitive mechanical parts that could be easily be affected by the lightning. Also to further establish how the Ion Cannons can affect the biological parts can be summed up by what I learned in Electrical training. It takes only 1 amp (literally 1 volt after resistance) to cause a heart attack and it requires you to shutdown the heart and restart the heart to recover from it if it does at all. The only one who could biologically resist this bullshit to any degree without conductive armor or shielding is Cluster and that's because it has true mastery over it's biology.
>So none of the Anti-Hive designs have Plasma Lances and Blasters.
The OQ raiding fleet does anon. Specifically the stealth cqc light fleet. Also the "Anti-Hive" ships weapon choice are pretty mediocre overall since the Exp autocannons are basically flak cannons (anti-fighter, anti-gunship) which she doesn't use. These ships would be better against the Human empires Ships than against Hive Ships. As a matter of fact the ships of the "Raiding fleet" seem to be built without any real understanding of her ships.
>our boarders are where our tech advantage against the OQ becomes most obvious
We're not going to get another chance at boarding. Just like how she created countermeasures against nuke pods she's going to create countermeasures against boarding specifically built for us. Sort that's ship more or less wasted.
>but even if it did the thing's also got a Fusion Core (for detonating) and will be lodged into an enemy ship.
That ship design is probably more expensive that her damn Cruiser. Us losing it is in her favor since she has more resources than us. Also the blowing up the ship won't the destruction of the one it's tethered to (though it be likely).
>>
>>1481889
Actually the OQ loves to use swarmers, which are easily wiped away by Explosive autocannons.

The Anti-Hive Corvette costs about 1200N and 2500M. A standard Cruiser with no weapons, armor, or anything else costs 1200N 2000M (but 2750M with weapons) and takes considerably longer to construct. So no, it doesn't cost more than her cruiser.

Your 'Electrical Training' was evidently of low quality, because it actually only takes about 100mA (and it doesn't matter the voltage, because the voltage only determines how EASY it is to get shocked and how much internal and external burning you'll receive) to begin ventricular fibrillation. Anything above 200mA and you're basically dead from massive burns, heart attack aside. This completely aside, human physiology and hyper advanced biomechanical military ship physiology are unlikely to share the same weaknesses to electric shock.

There's also not EMP guns that exist that shut off entire parts of your brain. There are delicate medical-grade devices that utilize EMP and magnetic effects in a highly controlled environment that can dampen the activity in certain sections of the brain.

Hive Ships have been stated to be resistant to the EMP effect of Ion Cannons (I can find the Ask Response if you'd like), and the stat block for the Ion Cannon is:
Dmg: Low energy
RoF: Low
Rng: Short
Acc: High
So that's a kind of shitty weapon overall, but especially against bio-ships.

Tell me these magical countermeasures that will be developed to prevent the OQs ships from ever being boarded. We've gotten pretty close to being immune to boarding with our Grav-Plates and Containment Fields (which she doesn't have), which still don't actually prevent the boarding they just prevent the boarders from doing anything.
>>
>>1481915
Agreed, Ion cannons are shit weapons against OQ. There's okay against anything else, but are worse than virtually anything else we have when it comes to the OQ.

We need weapons that will be most effective against the OQ. Blasters are good all arounders, but really only have good synergy with more of themselves. Plasma lances are really good, but one of their primary benefits is they ignore shields, which wouldn't be a factor with the OQ.

The best weapons for fighting the OQ would be:

Singularity Projectors (Hard counter to close range swarmers and excellent point defense),

Auto Cannon (accuracy boost against smaller ships will work to our benefit given our relatively high-end fleet)

And Railgun/LPB Combo where the LPB destroys the armor and makes the railgun even more effective.

Thermal Lances and Blasters are good for swarmers and/or for filling out the ranks, but shouldn't be our primary weapons against the OQ.

Cyclotrons and Ion cannons are shit-tier vs OQ.

I didn't include the disassembler warhead as a viable OQ weapon not because it wouldn't be highly effective against her (it would be devastating if it connects), but because the OQ's reliance on swarmers and so far extremely effective point defense means it will be difficult for our warheads to actually hit her ships.
>>
>>1481915
>Actually the OQ loves to use swarmers
To counter pods so its kind of a waste
>Hive Ships have been stated to be resistant to the EMP effect of Ion Cannons
To what degree? And what precisely causes this resistance? Is it just the biological components or is the structure somehow insulated against it? I doubt any of this was explained.
>I can find the Ask Response if you'd like
Please do.
>A standard Cruiser with no weapons, armor, or anything else costs 1200N 2000M
1255N is the nutrient cost of your Corvette. speed doesn't actually matter because she has a superior industrial and economic base then we do.
>Tell me these magical countermeasures that will be developed to prevent the OQs ships from ever being boarded.
The same ones the Skyl used (ejecting chunks of there ship) and heavy use of acid since she's immune and we're not. She has the her spores so she could also fuck up the tether.
We've gotten pretty close to being immune to boarding with our Grav-Plates
Stop right there. Grav-plates don't actually offer anti-boarding benefits which is why we don't get taxed for them. At most they do the room spin
>Your 'Electrical Training' was evidently of low quality
To be honest the facility I'm at is utter shit despite being new and because of where I live my health is being fucked up (no sleep, shit food, not enough exercise), all while surrounded by goddamn pavement apes who keep breaking things and hurting people. So yeah I'm just trying to survive the safety training.
>>
>>1481945
No, OQ uses Swarmers on her cruisers/battlecruisers for Ablative armor too. Which any boarding ships would handily bypass, by virtue of them being ships trying to ram themselves through.

Oh, so provided this Corvette IS going up against a barebones Cruiser AND doesn't do anything else productive in a battle we lost 55N. Splitting hairs a bit there, mate.

Grav Plates do offer anti-boarding benefits because they allow us to generate unpredictable changes in gravity being experienced by the boarders, slowing them down. They're not as effective at slowing boarders as Containment Shields, but they do contribute, and that's why they cost 1M per meter. The combination of both features is what makes any boarding action against our ship a slow, drone-harried crawl through a constantly shifting hell where you're continually being sealed off by hardlight bulkheads and thrown against the walls by shifting gravity.

She could develop ejectable ship sections, it's true. Even still, there's only so much she could eject and still have a ship. As for her acid, acid is always a good anti-armor weapon BUT it's not like it's a magic bullet that renders our Heavy Warriors utterly useless. They'll still be plenty killy.

Her spores don't work fast enough to fuck up our tethers.
>>
>>1481945
Really sucks that you're in a shitty facility and are expected to deal with electricity though. That shit'll kill you or at least make sure you have to get a limb amputated in a heartbeat. I bet your one of those guys who thought the Broken Swords and Binoculars were weak items in DS2. The Ion Cannon has the most potential to be broken and QD put a lot of effort to make wouldn't be but we wouldn't know if it's broken of not because we never field it.
>Plasma lances are really good
Yes the Plasma Lances are good. So good that the only weapon the Void and their cultist seem to use are Plasma Lance equivalents.
>Singularity Projectors (Hard counter to close range swarmers and excellent point defense)
>Close range swarmers
Who seriously uses swarmers close range? We won't and the Black Queen wouldn't want to be any near our ships either since last time we were we sunk her battleship with plasma lances.
>Oh, so provided this Corvette IS going up against a barebones Cruiser AND doesn't do anything else productive in a battle we lost 55N. Splitting hairs a bit there, mate.
The problem here is that she has superior production abilities due to a better industrial and resource base. We can't afford to settle for a 1 to 1 trade in losses and we can't risk recalling any ship that had physical contact out of fear of her tracking us.
>Grav Plates do offer anti-boarding benefits because they allow us to generate unpredictable changes in gravity being experienced by the boarders
No they don't. The most they can do is do the room spinning thing in Inception according to QD himself.
>thrown against the walls by shifting gravity.
QD outright said we can't do this.
>As for her acid, acid is always a good anti-armor weapon BUT it's not like it's a magic bullet that renders our Heavy Warriors utterly useless.
It'll make killing them vastly easier which is the main reason field them. Hard to kill.
>Her spores don't work fast enough to fuck up our tethers.
Prove it. We still don't fully understand them because if we did we would be using them right now.

Really why board the ships? I could understand when we were trying to capture the relay because that would have ended the war but trying to board one ship and potentially losing the ship doing the boarding is not a worthwhile trade unless we're targeting one of her most valuable ships or trying to jam her relays (which she'll never allow she'd rather kill her own ship then let it happen).

It's both not
The while the facilities are brand new they are already falling apart. Support beams holding up the ceiling are warping and cracking, the water stopped working properly for go few months, at one point a bear was wandering around the place looking for food, tools kept getting stolen, the place is rife with corruption, and facility maintenance is hilariously incompetent to the point I dread having to work with them. Really most of what we learn is safety since this is just training for the eventual apprenticeship so most of the training is practicing with dead circuits since somebody got belted early on, getting certifications like ladder safety (you'd be surprised how many people didn't know how to use a ladder), and tests based on a textbook drier than Tolkien's Lord of the Ring trilogy. Most of the time however there is nothing to do (because you can only have so many electricians screw in one light bulb) so we have to find way to entertain ourselves during whether it be looking up the news, playing magic the gathering, basketball, video games, watching videos and movies, and watching facility maintenance fail at their jobsit took 3 months to put up that fucking shelf. Most of the problems of this place could be resolved if it stopped being a liberal infested shithole obsessed with diversity. Literally the first thing they try to teach you is to love diversity, the first thing you learn is to hate it. The diversity and multiculturalism got so bad that we had a nigger inciting the rest of the nigs to kill whitey while the highly tolerant staff they watched the entire thing and were mostly black did nothing, hell they actually clapped. A race war might have happened if he didn't transfer out. And best part is this was one of the better such facilities since the others already fell apart from internal conflict.
So yeah I'm /pol/ as fuck from my experience.

Wait, we also should at least solve a little mystery.

- What was your current plan for escape? Take over the leader, really?
- Were you hiding something in the lockers?

Anyway, no escape plan could possibly work unless we fake the Thing's death, which would require splitting it in two. And the half that sacrifices itself, dying in a highly visible display which it will have to make convincingly difficult for the humans, has to have enough biomass so the fact that it split isn't obvious.

That's assuming we want it to escape at all.

Or we could convince the humans to beseech the hive to help, then warriors arrive with cryo-weapons to ask it nicely to be frozen for transport back 'home to its family'. How could the humans kidnap such an innocent creature?

And it has to be frozen or something when taken back out to assuage human fears of it getting free on Path.

>- What was your current plan for escape? Take over the leader, really?

It was probably just doing information gathering and infiltration. It had no idea what was going on but finding and infecting the leader would probably be a good place to start.

What we should do is have some of our boarding ships come down and cut an entry into the lab. We should be plenty capable of making an airtight seal. We then load everyone and everything onto ships and completely torch the entire lab with fire/molecular acid until nothing is left.

This way we do less to piss off the cluster (it comes with us on a ship without being frozen, we get some diplomatic cards to play by complaining about human meddling again and can stage an "investigation" of the humans running the lab, and we keep anythIng from escaping.

As to how we get the humans to ask us to intervene, I think we should have Lee call up Morgan and tell him the hive is furious about a "bioweapon" activation they detected on Path. We tell Morgan we are willing to help now, but that if the hive doesn't come in now it could ruin the whole biosphere. Morgan seems like the kind of guy who would believe us, and given the stakes could authorize an incursion. Of course, we will send in ships no matter what, but we are doing a curtesy of asking first this time.
>>
IF we do intervene in the lab, we need to careful about the stated reason for doing so. The "psychic screaming" is going to wear real thin if we try to use it again, especially seeing as the Valen have some limited psychic ability.
>>
>>1486166
We could claim to have detected a faint signal from the "bioweapon" it makes sense that a weapon would not exactly want to announce its presence.

Other options include asking the Cluster to mutate into a creature capable of sending radio transmissions and then have it blast out a bit of gibberish on all frequencies we can use as an excuse to intervene.

Or we could just not tell the humans how we knew about the breach. Our military technologies and how we control them are a closely guarded secret and we do not owe them an "answer." They won't know if it is from us mindreading an individual familiar with the disaster here on Gemini, if we infiltrated the government, or if our sensors are just that good. Keeping them paranoid and unsure of the extent of our abilities is a good thing.
>>
>>1485224
Why can't we just do something like this >>1463859 i would rather avoid the Union knowing or suspect of our presence in path.
>>
We can't forget what Theseus said a couple thread ago, about a action occoured beforea deal is made. Ourproposal wasn't accepted yet, with so, we can't blame the Union for doing something before the "deal" even exist.

I know what we are actually doing is a demand not a deal. But if we want to avoid any bad PR with the humans un the Union and avoid a wastefull war. We might have to consider this point.
>>
Why not just have Cluster hack the place and send out a signal onto the internet? Why not have him make the spores out of control?
>>
>>1486699
Because we still need to know what it will do once it gets out. I'm okay with the cluster wanting to survive all sentient creatures deserve to.

What i'm not okay is if once he gets out. We end up with something worse then the humans to fight.
>>
>>1486720
Agreed. As much as we want to make a new ally with the Cluster we shouldn't just let it run unchecked in human society. We need to develop this relationship more before we just trust it won't go flood on us when it gets up to date with the situation. Remember that compared to the ancient hives our own is young and weak. We need to know what the Cluster wants and what it's plan will be.
>>
>>1486375
The best case sencerio is shit hits the fan on Path so that it spills out of the lab and we have to intervene.
>>
>>1486803
That's not really a best case scenario. The Cluster is an ancient and powerful species that should be treated with the same threat level as an equal. Controlling what the Cluster knows, learning more about it, and deciding how to best convince it to align with us is of paramount importance. Letting it run rampant among a human megacity loses us the initiative. We would lose any control of the situation and would no longer be able to introduce ourself to the main Cluster on Djinn on our own terms.

Making the Cluster an ally, or at least keeping it placid, should be at least as important as avoiding unnecessary Space War with the Union. Long term the Cluster knows much more and could be much more powerful than them.
>>
>>1486834
Where the Union is concerned it is. The more people that get killed in an "accident" that could have been prevented by listening to us the more ridiculous our leverage over the Union becomes. Also even if Cluster is released and hostile we could just quarantine the and forcibly occupy the planet until he's exterminated.
>>
>>1486342
I don't see how them inviting us for a visit and being under their watchful eye the entire time makes them suspect a more permanent hive presence on Path any more than the battle we had in its orbit would.

Also dunno how good any such ruse is. It would be a big coincidence, vs them deliberately telling us.
>>
>>1486720
>>1486744
So just kill it to be sure. There's more than one cluster on Djin, where they can be safely contained. The other clusters would never know that this one died.

This one is a much higher risk.
>>
>>1487013
>There's more than one cluster on Djin,
We know something is down there, but we don't know what. It's likely connected to the Clusters, but we have no confirmation of that.
>>
>>1487001
They constantly come to the right conclusions about us even if for the wrong reasons.
>>
>>1487013
Nah.
>>
>>1486980
Quarantining the most populated planet in the Union will be incredibly difficult. Most likely they can't even feed themselves without regular shipments. If we try to lockdown the planet we will be coming very very close to open war with the Union even if it is their fault.
>>
>>1487098
Simple we transfer the shipments of food ourselves which come to think of it gives us an excuse to be on Talgo to investigate the priest.
>>
>>1487013
If we need to we will kill it. Beside this cluster could be connected to the one in Djinn remember their network flowed throught the cosmos in the flashback. We can't garantee it won't receive the information in a way we don't know about.

The flashback that showed them ripping out their psionic eyes like Oedipus and becoming alone and silent.

That flashback.
