Welcome back to Dark Empire Quest, where you the players aid the reborn Emperor Palpatine and Imperial Commander Alana Tyrna and possibly others as they fight to rebuild the Galactic Empire after the crushing defeat at Endor and the subsequent collapse. We will guide their choices, deal with the consequences of their actions, and work to ensure the Empire rises once again.

I allow between ten and twenty minutes for voting depending on the importance of the issue and how divided the vote is. If the vote is tied up, I usually allow an extra five minutes for a tie breaker, and if no one votes, I roll for the tie breaker (The will of the dark side).

I always try to incorporate (and encourage) write ins if they don't violate the spirit of voted decisions, though I may edit or tweak them to fit better.

I also am always open for questions. I'll just ask that they stay relevant to current events in the quest, or at least the near future.

Alana had some tough calls to make about going to a Kuati Victory Ball. What to wear, who to take, and if she should wear a sword or not. Despite inviting him, her Executive Officer Lieutenant Tierce was uncomfortable both with the idea of accompanying his commanding officer to a party, and with actually going to a party, leaving Alana to make the trip alone.
>>
Hell yeah!! Time for Imperial politics!!
>>
The lush greenery of Kuat rolls by beneath your shuttle as you cruise toward the extravagant villa. The fading sunlight casts the greens into shades of purple and grey, turning the landscape mysterious and alien. You know this sort of natural (if artificial gardens could be considered natural) beauty is only possible because Kuat offloaded its massive industrial base into orbit, bringing with it legions of low-income dock workers, leaving the planet's surface as a sort of refuge of greenery for the elite.

In your opinion, that decision had paid off handsomely.

As your shuttle comes in on a final pass of the sprawling estate, you spy the main building, done in a pseudo-archaic style from Kuat's distant, colonial past. The villa itself is expansive and is surrounded by pools, fountains and gardens of various sizes and styles.

Standing hideously out of place amongst the greenery is a series of landing pads just outside the villa, already choked with shuttles and transports. Your own shuttle lines up to join them, wings folding up and gracefully switching to repulsorlifts and settle onto the pad.

The hatch opens and ramp lowers, bringing with it the fragrant night air of Kuat, and the sounds of a party in progress. You step down the ramp, one hand resting on the hilt of your sword. You feel minor triumph as some nearby ground crew loitering around the shuttles and keeping one another company, cast glances your way. Turning heads already, perfect. Although they were just military personnel and nobody to be impressed with. You had bigger fish to fry inside.

You reach the edge of the landing pad and realize that rather than just being a giant slab of duracrete placed off away from the villa, it is actually a sort of "holding pen" for the shuttles and their crews, fenced off with nearly invisible wire strands with a single point of entry, manned by a squad of stormtroopers and a black-clad infantry officer.

"Name and invitation," the infantry officer says, his face all business.

"Commander Alana Tyrna," you reply, handing over the flimplast printout of the invitation. You make no attempt to impress him with your name or rank, you're sure he's dealt with much more prominent members of the Imperial hierarchy than a measly Baroness and Commander today.

"Commander Tyrna," he hands the invitation back, "Welcome. Would you like an escort to the door?"

You mentally measure the distance to Villa at a glass, it's not terribly far, a stone path lined with small footlights that meandered across the grounds to the front entrance. You could of course easily make the distance alone, and you didn't have much fear of ambush by assassins here in the Kuat countryside, but you knew from experience, some nobles simply liked to look important, nothing provided that more than an unnecessary Stormtrooper escort.

"That won't be necessary I think," you reply with a smile. "Thank you."

The lieutenant salutes you and returns your invitation.

Alone, you walk the small stone pathway to the main entrance of the villa, a pair of Stormtroopers pull open the doors to admit you. As they open, sound and light spills out from inside.

When you enter the main hall of the villa, you are transported mentally back to your youth when your parents would host or attend similar parties on Byss. Back before the darkness of the Rebellion and the chaos of civil war. This was true, "Golden Age" Imperial style like you hadn't seen in years.

The main hall itself has a high vaulted ceiling that comes to peak and runs lengthwise along the hall which seems to bisect the main building. The farthest back wall is more window than wall, giving a wonderful view of the darkened gardens and an expansive lit fountain. The hall is also ringed by a balcony accessible by twin stair cases, one on either side of the hall.

There are innumerable doors leading to other parts of the house lining the walls, as you walk you catch sight of a trophy room, a sitting room, and some kind of advanced holographic entertainment center. But the main attraction to you, is the people, and of that there are all types.

(1/2)
>>
Starting at the bottom are the ones who are meant to be invisible. Wait staff fall lowest on that ranking scale, navigating the party with trays of treats and drinks.

Just above them are the grunts. Stormtroopers abound, all trying to stay out of the way and be present at the same time. Anyone who thinks they are someone wants to show that off with a stormtrooper escort. You guessed you could muster a whole battalion of them if you cleared the building. Typically these escorts hung around early in the party and were later dismissed to lurk outside until needed.

Above the foot soldiers and bodyguards were the aids and staff. Lieutenants, Ensigns, secretaries, and (this being Kuat) numerous Telbuns who were more or less surrogate parents to the children of Kuati nobles, not only raising them, but also fathering/mothering them in the most literal sense.

Once you had taken in these people, you put them out of mind. They were inconsequential, perhaps a topic of conversation and nothing more.

Beyond that, everyone here is like a stratum of the upper crust of Imperial society. Military officers, not just naval but those from Intelligence, Security, the Army and Stormtrooper Corps are here as well. There are nobles of every rank and description. The unofficial nobility is present as well, the wealthy industrialists who bankroll and run many of the Empire's assets. In association with all the groups is a healthy collection of "hangers on" the people who have no claim to fame other than the company they keep. You notice, for instance, Grand Admiral Zahn is not far away entertaining a trio of young ladies with what looks like a story of combat heroism.

Now comes time for the age-old art of mingling. You can see several roughly segregated groups of people you could interact with, the choice remains on where to start. It can be assumed that wherever you go and whoever you talk to, you'll act with grace and tact.

The business industrialists of the Empire in many cases, more so than the military, or even the Moffs, are the ones holding all the keys. The families of Kuat hold a virtual monopoly over the major warships of the empire, and Sienar dominates the production of star fighters. By making contacts here, you could earn valuable allies capable of supplying you with the latest and greatest in technology. Beside which, it never hurts to have friends with deep pockets.

You take a flute of alcohol from a passing waiter, Corellian Brandy from the smell of it. You take a sip and integrate yourself with the business crowd. In this case, your gown helps you to blend in better, while your sheathed sword serves to help you stand out. You don't see any from the Sienar family, but you quickly attract the attention of a Kuati in native dress, a strikingly beautiful Telbun training subserviently along behind him.

"Hello," he says, taking you in from head to toe, "My name is Bin Luar." from his confident air, he's a man used to getting his way, which to you speaks of either wealth, power, skill, arrogance, or all of the above. "And you are, my Lady?"

"Alana Tyrna," you reply, "Commander."

"Commander," he repeats, bemused. "Such a nasty profession for such an elegant lady. I must ask, your family, Tyrna, are you related to Minister Aldon Tyrna of Byss?"

"My father," you reply with a smile.

"Which would make you . . . A baroness?" he asks.

"Exactly that. And I must apologize, I'm not familiar with the Luar family."

"Relations of House Knylenn," Luar explains.

"And what is it you do?"

"Primarily I own a controlling share in part of thr Drive Yards responsible for outfitting Imperial II Class Star Destroyers. Every time we produce one of those beautiful warships, it must be stocked. Fighters, ammo, fuel, food, I contract that work," Luar speaks with professional detachment, but as he does, you watch his eyes travel over your body as if you're not standing and watching him do it.

"Your Telbun," you indicate the woman behind him, "Are you planning for a child?"

Luar shrugs, "I'd considered it. I am married for now. But I'm not sure it's a business relationship that will hold up."

So he was the requsitioner for requisition officers. Another link a long supply chain, albeit one closer to the source of production.

"So you're the one who gets our ships ready for combat before they depart?"

"In a sense," Luar says, "It's more than just combat supplies, but that's so. With the switch over from Tie/Lns to the Tie/Ads it's become something of a logistics nightmare. I can tell you a lot of behind the scenes scrambling and late nights have been put in."
"I can't imagine," you say sympathetically.

"All for the service of the Empire," he says. "Something I'm sure you're familiar with, being as important as you are. If I recall your family was one of the first on Byss."

"Yes, the Tyrna family was awarded land their for their loyal support of the Emperor during the Empire's early days."

"I would expect someone from such a prominent family would rank higher in the navy though," Luar says, more to himself than to you it seemed.

"A noble title doesn't always translate well to a military rank. Admiral Piett, my superior at Endor, held no noble title."

"Hmm," Luar rubs his chin. "Well I imagine it's frustrating being held back."
You laugh softly, "It can be, but I believe that talent can take time to recognize."

"Isn't that so," Luar says.

"I must say, I'm rather envious of the power you wield in the Drive Yards. I've recently come out of combat and I have a pressing need to replenish my fighter stock," you say, sipping brandy.

"Combat? Under who's command?" Luar asks.

"My own," you reply, overlooking the seemingly unintended slight. "I was engaged defending Trellen."

"Ah, I'd heard that was quite a fight. You lost many fighters there?"

"Yes, and I was hoping to have them replaced with those new Tie Avengers, perhaps you would be the man to speak with about that?"

"That's certainly possible, Lady Tyrna. To be frank, I think that there are many ways we could benefit one another. Perhaps you'd be interested in an alliance between Houses."

Luar switched conversation topics so quickly you find yourself momentarily at a loss for words. What Luar was proposing, an alliance, was tantamount to marriage in Kuati society. What Luar meant was for you to become part of House Knylenn, and he part of House Tyrna.

You recover from your shock to feign appreciative surprise. "Mr Luar, you flatter me."

"Flattery implies insincerity," Luar says.

"I do appreciate the offer, but I'm not so certain your wife would approve."

Luar waves away this excuse. "She means nothing. A failed business venture and nothing more. With the new Tie/Ads, old connections at Sienar are suddenly less valuable. But surely you can recognize the value of such an alliance."

"Oh, of course. But I wouldn't be the one that would have to be convinced. I would have to speak with my father about any such . . . Joining of houses."

"Ah yes," Luar says, he hadn't considered this.

"But I would want you to know that I am not ready to jump into anything too serious right now. I am still a young woman with my life and career ahead of me. But a very generous gesture of hospitality between houses could go a long way."

"I did not refuse an alliance," you say, "I Merely explained that I was not in a position to agree to one. It seems that if you're interested in access to House Tyrna, you would do best to have an advocate within, one very close to the head of the House." Luar nods, conceding the point.

"Beside which, you mentioned that you are surprised at my relatively low rank. The War for Reclamation is young, and I suspect will last a long time still, and having the right connections could get you out of counting how much food a ship needs, to how many ships you want created. Having the ear of a future Commodore or Admiral may certainly have its benefits. This war is a chance for both of us to grasp destiny."

If Luar is surprised the vapid noblewoman he was speaking with has been replaced by a shred negotiator, he gives little sign of it. If anything, your business savvy seems to have impressed him. "Hmm. I can't promise you much in exchange for what amounts to little more than a promise for future repayment. I can provide two squadrons of Tie Avengers and one of Shadow Droids. I assume that will suit your needs?"

You nod, "I should be able to put those to good use."

"And you'll speak to your father?"

"When I find the opportunity."

"Splendid. I'll have my man draw up the transfer orders for you. A pleasure, Lady Tyrna."

"Likewise," you exchange truncated bows.

"Come along," Luar snaps to his Telbun, disappearing into the party without further delay.

Three Squadrons of some of the Empire's newest fighters, not a windfall, but a welcome surprise. You'd also of course managed this with your dignity and marital status intact which was no small feat, though it was truly flattering to know you were still desirable.

With that done, you are again faced with the party as a whole. What will you do next?

You feel the urge for some fresh air, and decide to stroll the grounds. As you leave the main hall behind, you step through the glass archway at its far end to enter the gardens at the rear of the estate. The sun has since dipped beneath the horizon, but between the lit fountain and the footlights lining every path, you have no trouble navigating around. Out here there are many more intimate conversations than the hall.

You do spot Duchess Ederlathh Pallopides of Naboo enjoying the night air. While Ederlathh is only a teenager, she holds immense political importance of a sort, being a distant relation of the Emperor's. You consider trying to speak with her, but you don't like bored expression, one you'd seen on all too many petulant teenage nobles in your younger years. Beside which, her entourage formed a virtually impenetrable curtain around her, fawning over her, and generally competing for her attention.

"Commander Tyrna?"

You turn to see a young woman in a Naval uniform, as soon as you turn to her, her face spreads into a smile, "Oh I knew I recognized you. Commander Tyrna, please, let me introduce myself. I'm Captain Maline Sesstrix of the Strike-Class Indomitable." She salutes, a gesture you return. "It's wonderful to meet you, ma'am."

"Thank you, Captain, but I'm not sure what I've done to earn your admiration."

Captain Sesstrix gives an easy laugh, "That's not surprising. We never met, though we were both at the Battle of Coruscant together. I wanted to speak with you if I ever got a chance. You're an inspiration ma'am. You're the reason I hold command. Because I saw what you were capable of and I realized I could be more than a line officer."

"That's wonderful to hear captain. We could use more officers like you, I'm sure you're a benefit to your crew."

"Yes, ma'am.," Sesstrix agrees. "It's just, forgive me for being so forward, I would like to serve with you, ma'am."

The lady gets communists, but the young ensign can be XO or other promootion.

"I don't have many openings in my fleet Captain. If you're not insulted, I can offer you command of a Lancer-Class that is in need of some command experience."

"If it means a chance to serve with you, I'll take it. I don't care if it's even only for a single patrol, I won't be satisfied unless I have a chance to fight alongside you."

"You may very well get that chance, Captain. Besides, if you truly have what it takes, I may very well report to you one day." Sesstrix laughs, "That would be something, wouldn't it? Thank you, Commander!" she salutes, "You won't regret this."

You don't tell her, but at this point you'll settle for virtually anyone with command experience. Having one of those people be someone who idolizes you could be beneficial as well. Sesstrix doesn't have much else to say other than gushing about her excitement meeting you. You remember that you're not the only one at this ball looking for networking opportunities. A combat-intensive command for her could prove a booster-shot for her career as it was for yours.

Eventually the energetic young captain leaves you alone again.

Though your options to "take the Duchess out" are limited since there's no where to go really. You can try to be hip with the youths,.
>>
You'd been in Ederlathh's shoes once. Not quite to that degree, but you'd once been a bored teenage girl stuck in what felt like endless diplomatic processions. It may give you common ground, and may give you a boost into her inner circle.
You took the chance, approaching the Duchess and her entourage, blending quite well. It took some work, socializing with those on the "outside" almost a tactical maneuver to break through to the core. It takes some time, but you ultimately find yourself in physical proximity to the young Duchess, standing on the edge of the fountain, watching the ripples on the water.

It was time to wind your mental clock back ten years. You take a deep breath, staring out over the water beside Ederlathh and sigh. "What a drag."

The Duchess gives you a curious glance, you suspected she didn't encounter many adults moaning and groaning about their days.

"Bad night?" Ederlathh asks, her voice somewhere between confusion and amusement.

"Pretty much. I'd give just about anything to be back on my ship, but I guess these parties are necessary evil."

"Ship?" Ederlathh asks, "Oh, you're an officer?"

"Commander of a Victory-Class," you say proudly, "Alana. Tyrna."

Ederlathh gives you a single nod of her head, her interest visibly waning.

"I mean, usually you can at least expect to meet some cute boys at these things," you press on. "No luck so far, though I did have a guy propose to me."

Ederlathh snorts, "oh poor you. Try getting a dozen of those a day. The Hapans of all people sent me a holomessage the other day."

"Sounds rough," you say, catching Ederlatth's eye on the sheath hanging at your side.

"Nice sword," she says. "Is it real?"
"Sure. It's ceremonial though," you reply.
"Let me see it."

You know better than to argue with that tone of voice, even if it comes from a teenager. Duchess typically aren't taught to understand "no".
You carefully draw the sword, the blade sparkling in the light, and hand it to her. By now, you've caught the undivided attention of at least half of those with her. The Duchess isn't handed a naked blade every day.

Ederlathh hefts the sword and gives a few practice swings over the water. "Pretty heavy," she says derisively. "I'm going to get my own at some point." she hands it back to you.

"Why? Ceremonial like mine? Or an actual sword so you have something 'interesting' to show off?"

The Duchess looks you over, something in her demeanor changing somehow. She looks you in the eye and you feel distinctly uncomfortable. "A real one," she replies after a moment, "Not some old piece of junk like that. What would you know about that?"
"Nothing," you say immediately.

She studies you another moment or two, seeming to return to 'normal' and shrugs. "Your sword is pretty cool. Thanks for showing me."

"No problem," you say, mentally rebalancing yourself, "Any time." You are aware that her entourage has stopped paying attention to you.

"Commander Tyrna, since you're here, you've got to want something. What exactly is it that you want?"

"Maybe you'd like to travel to my family estate on Byss for some time away from all this," you add.

The Duchess chuckles, "Sure, why not. You seem pretty harmless." Her tone is light, but her expression fairly unchanged. "Thank you, Commander Tyrna. I don't mean to sound unkind, but you're hardly the first person to 'want to be my friend'." She gives a telling look to her entourage.

"I understand. Well, take me up on my offer, perhaps you'll see I'm different," you say.

"I don't like to gossip, but I spoke at length with Bin Luar, a Kuati industrialist-"

"I'm familiar with Luar," Ederlathh replies.

"He had ideas about a family alliance that I didn't reciprocate."

"Oh dear," a malicious grin spreads across the Duchess's face. "I imagine that would prove quite awkward for his wife. But Kuati men can't keep it in their pants to save their lives."

"Do you know of any bachelors who are eligible?" you ask.

"If I knew of any men worth my time, I wouldn't give them to you," she laughs. "I'm sure someone like you won't have a problem scrounging up a Baron or a captain somewhere. I think I'm destined to end up a skeleton in Palpatine's closet."

"You don't give yourself enough credit," you say.

"Now that may be true." She smiles, "Commander Tyrna-"

"Alana," you interject, thinking of what this could mean for your relationship with your father.

"Alana. Enjoy the rest of your night."

It's obvious you're being dismissed, though politely. "Of course, thank you, my lady."

Ederlathh gives you another smile in reply.

You leave the Duchess and her hanger-ons behind, taking some pleasure in the dirty looks they give you, the intruder who dared upset their delicate social ecosystem.

You quickly check your chronometer and see that it's getting late. You have just enough time to try to network with one of the Empire's Admirals.

Oxtroe is often seen as the black nerf of the navy, and she did effectively steel your plan to attack the Rendilli Shipyards, but she may be easier to get close to because of that.

Yazz is one of the few Admirals who fell under Executor Sedriss's command during the collapse and was positive of your efforts to combat the mutineers and your subsequent fight at Trellen, though for reasons unknown he passed you up for promotion according to your father.

Lobkin is an unknown value to you. He is the newest admiral and Peer of the Empire, but also comes from "tainted" roots being a former second in command in one of the warlord factions that litter the galaxy.

>>1506278

Speak with Oxtroe.

This might come far too late with far too little, but I am going against majority here.

The reason is that while Oxtoe and Yazz happy with our combat performance, but only Oxtroe knows we did take initiave for suggesting attack on the shipyards.
Showing that you have good head for taking initiave becomes more important as we gain ranks and out of all big shots here Oxtroe is the only one that knows from personal experience. Unless I don't remember something major happening with other big shots.

This could be pretty good place to...Show we aren't petty about her taking glory for our suggestion, but we are willing to put such things behind us for l0ong game.

This is in mind the safe options as Alana can make better educated guess in dance of discussions with Oxtroe due having more information and something to talk about compared to Yazz mysterious unknown reasons.

I am not saying Yazz is bad choice or any, but there is more unknown variatables working in that choice.

Welcome back to Dark Empire.

Previously, Alana had rubbed elbows with the Empire's elite at a Victory Ball on Kuat. After turning down a marriage proposal from a Kuati industrialist, though she managed to secure for herself a few squadrons of advanced fighters at the promise of becoming an advocate for him within your family. She met a naval captain and offered her command of the Lancer-Class Turmoil. Contact was made with the touchy Duchess of Naboo, Ederlathh Pillopides, a promise of friendship made and a bit of gossip exchange. Now, you'd spotted Admiral Yazz alone and decided to approach him and perhaps be able to network better with your last commanding officer.

As always follow Twitter for updates and game times.

***

You've had very little firsthand interaction with Yazz. In fact, none at all. You'd briefly spoken with him through holonet messages during the height of crisis at Trellen. Hardly enough to learn a man's character. You'd felt accomplished at the time, like Yazz approved of your actions, but afterward in the orgy of fame and celebration following the victories at Kuat and Corellia, you'd found yourself with little more than positive holonet coverage. No promotion and little recognition.

According to your father, this was Yazz's fault directly. You couldn't fathom what you'd done to warrant a "cold shoulder" but you supposed now would be as good a time as any to find out. You spot Admiral Yazz alone in the Villa's trophy room, inspecting the mounted and stuffed heads while nursing a glass of brandy. You make up your mind to speak with him personally and make up your mind.

You're momentarily distracted on your way over by a man you notice watching you from another point in the entry hall. You don't recognize him at first, though he wears the uniform of an Admiral underneath an overcoat he wears over his shoulders. The latest elevation to the rank of Admiral, and one of the newer Peers of the Empire. Baron Lobkin. He watches you casually, puffing on a cigarra and ignoring the shaded looks the other guests send his way.

No matter, you turn away and enter the darkened trophy room, looking over specimens both of hunting prowess, and a few pieces of military conquest. Prominently displayed is a meter-wide piece of armor plating bearing both scorch marks, and the old emblem for the Confederacy of Independent Systems.

Admiral Yazz has not noticed you, or at least hasn't said anything yet.

You peruse the assembled trophies a bit, the admiral looking at them, eventually right alongside you. That's when he seems to notice you.

"Commander Tyrna," Yazz says, looking surprised to see you, "Hello. I never got to congratulate you for the job you did at Trellen. Well done."

"Thank you, sir," you reply. "I was just admiring the trophies here. It's quite a large collection."

"Supplied by various sons of Kuat," Yazz supplies, "the planet, not the family. I'm not much for hunting, but the war relics are impressive." Yazz visibly transitions to a more professional stance, even his voice changing. "Now what is it I can do for you Commander?"

"Yes, sir admiral. Thank you for the advice, sir," you reply.

Yazz nods absently and turns away from you as you leave, defeated.

You're beginning to get a sense of why your father dislikes Yazz. It still came as a surprise to you that Yazz had acted so coldly, especially since he had seemed somewhat pleased with your performance at Trellen. Perhaps you had somehow done something to offend him and he had denied you a promotion as your father said. You guessed at this rate you'd never know.

No matter, you were here to network weren't you?

Maybe Yazz was right, you'd done enough socializing for the moment. You opted to instead enjoy your brandy, the party, and the fine night atmosphere while you could. Soon enough you would be back on the cold command deck of Splinter.

You make your way to the ballroom itself the supposed purpose of this function. Dancing couples virtually fill the marble expanse , a fake-starry night sky is holoprojected above the ballroom floor giving a sense of dancing among the stars themselves. It'd been years since you'd danced, you think it's almost a shame that you have no one to dance with you . . .

You don't have time to dwell on your thoughts long. As the last song ends, the dancing stops and you see Grand Admiral Zahn ascend the small stage at the far end of the room. Suddenly people from across the estate are filling the room, hoping to hear the Grand Admiral speak. You manage to press closer in order to hear better.

When Zahn begins to speak, cheers and shouts drown him out. He laughs and waves for silence before the crowd will settle down enough for him to speak.

"I'm humbled to come before you today as a victor among victors. We here represent the chosen of the Emperor. We are the true believers who have not cast aside the dream of a united Empire of peace. A dream born of the chaos and bloodshed of the Clone Wars and Jedi Uprising." Zahn pauses, "We faced failure and defeat at Endor at the hands of those who would stab us in the back and tear down the empire for whatever scraps they could claim for themselves. But usurpers and traitors can't keep us down."

"With our victory at Kuat and Corellia and Coruscant before them we begin a new chapter in Imperial history. Before today, we talked of avenging Endor, avenging the Emperor and the Empire. Now, instead, we will carry forward a legacy of victory that our children and grandchildren can bear with them forever. The days of Rebellion and Warlords are over. The day of the Empire is at hand." He raises his glass overhead, "Join me, won't you?"

You lift your own half-emptied brandy glass, those all around you doing the same.

"For the Empire!" Zahn calls.

"For the empire!" You respond, one voice of a hundred or more.

***

The time has come to leave the party, people are beginning to file out bit by bit, taking their shuttles back to orbit, to waiting ships, the Drive Yards, or even in some cases, Kuat City.

You will have to be leaving yourself momentarily, but you have time for short or quick actions.

To be honest with yourself, you're glad this whole function is over. Yes, some part of you likes the spectacle and pageantry, but another part of you remembers you're not seventeen anymore. You're an officer in the Emperor's navy. You make your way back to the shuttle, thinking of the connections you made, the fighters Luar promised you, and the "inside connection" you promised him, your new Captain Sesstrix, and of course, the Duchess of Naboo, Ederlathh Pilopiodes and your promise to entertain her ay your estate on Byss.

Well, you had time enough to worry about all that later. For now, your concern was returning to your ship, and perhaps giving Tierce a stern talking to for declining your invitation to the ball . . .

You are Darth Cythera. You are aboard the Sith Cruiser Korriban on your way to the isolated, frigid wasteland of Rhen Var, the reported location of Luke Skywalker's hidden Jedi Academy. The bounty hunters who brought this information to you grossly underestimated the insight of a Jedi, and may have compromise your operation before it began. No matter, you had a job to do.

Kill the upstart Jedi Master.

Do this, and prove yourself a worthy apprentice to the Emperor.

Accompanying you is the head of the Blackguard and formerly the Emperor's right hand, the Imperial Executor Sedriss along with two of his Dark Side Adepts. It's obvious to you, and likely everyone on board, that Sedriss despises you and feels the apprentice position is rightfully his, his Blackguard are of course loyal to their master and make it clear they are following his direction rather than yours.

All of the tension between you and your fellow Dark Siders, not to mention the stress of the coming assignment has driven you to seek seclusion. It is there you find yourself, in the dark recesses of the ship, sitting on your legs in silence, only the whisper and hum of the atmospheric controls, as well as the ever-present thrum of the reactor keep you company.

Your eyes are closed, you suppress a shiver as currents of cold air brush over you. You feel the Dark Side here, powerful, and growing strong with each parsec closer you get to Rhen Var.

Ancient.

Incredibly ancient. There had once been an Imperial station on the planet which reported vast ruins buried beneath snow and ice in the craggy mountain peaks of the world.

Cold.

Deep, penetrating cold that made your bones ache even as wind stings your face and tosses your hair.

Dead.

You open your eyes.

You're standing on a mountainside so steep it's nearly vertical, looking down over a rocky valley whose bottom is completely shrouded in clouds. Beside you is a tumbled obelisk of dark stone, faces worn down by endlessly buffeting wind, beyond that, a columned temple, collapsed inward on itself, stones several meters in diameter having fallen and rolled down this slop to come to a stop on the thick snow. On top of one of these you stood, virtually unprotected against the harsh elements.

Weak a dead voice croaks in your mind. You see it now, a shadow in the snowstorm ahead, the size of a man with dead white eyes glowing like stars in the dark. Weakness I sense in you, fear, inadequacy[/i.]

What is about jedis and making temples in dark sided planets? Well that will be better for us since it will make us stronger.

And fortunantly we have three ideal futurw corpses in the ship.
>>
"I feel no fear," you tell the creature, "There is only passion."

It laughs with a distant hollow sound, partially drowned out by the howling wind.

(A comforting lie) it replies. (I sense your fear. So heavy and so palpable I can almost taste it)

You shiver at the thought.

More shadow forms assemble on the edge of your vision, black stains cloaked in the swirling white snowstorm around them, the wicked, sharp, deadly shapes of weapons at their side.

(You fancy yourself a Sith Lord, yet you have no hope of defeating a single Jedi)

"Well it looks like you didn't fare so well yourself, buddy," you spit back.

The creature chuckles again, making you grit your teeth against the terrible sound.

(You hope to end the tyranny of the Jedi, to destroy their rule of ignorance, but you must know, even if you are to manage somehow to kill the master, there are others.)

"They'll scatter like vermin," you reply, "And I'll hunt them down."

(You won't even manage the one) the shadow replies.

>Then why don't you help me?
>What are you? What do you want?
>All this effort just to try and scare me?

You snort, "This is all you're able to do? Appear as shadows and dance a little dance? Yet you want to attempt to insult me?" you shake your head. "Tell me, did your master rule the galaxy? Did they destroy the republic? No they failed just like you."

(The work of the master is no credit to the apprentice.)

"Well, if you're so concerned for my safety, why don't you help me?"

(It is not the Sith Way) the shadow replies. (You should know as much, proclaiming to be a Dark Lord. But I think, you are just a coward playing at the title)

You scowl, "I won't be mocked by a ghost. You already failed! if you want to see my power then why don't we do the 'Sith way'?" You snap on your saber, the snow around you turns the color of blood in the glow of the beam.

(You think yourself brave?) the shadow asks (Threatening the dead with death?)

"I think you should watch who you insult."

The shadow army begins to back away into the swirling void.

You open your eyes to see the sparse surroundings of your meditation and training chambers on your assault ship. The alpine wasteland of Rehn Var left behind. Standing before you though is the Shadow, now visibly wearing the remains of ancient armor, scored with hits from energy and blade weapons, tattered from millennia of wind. Its face a void marred by the vivid white blotches where its eyes would be.

(Only by killing Skywalker will you earn the right to call yourself a Sith, my Dark Lord.)

"Let's see that farm boy stop a turbolaser from orbit with peace and goodwill," you reply. "One way or another, he'll die."

(If you do not claim power and finish Luke Skywalker yourself, then you will never have any power at all) it replies. (If you kill the Jedi as a coward, then a coward you will always be.)

>If victory makes me a coward, then so be it! I will win any way I can.
>If it means so much to you, I'll kill the boy with my own hands
>Why does it matter so much how he dies?

(You are not an extension of your master's will. You are the Apprentice. Do you know what this means?)

"Enlighten me."

(You are no longer a spy or an assassin. You are a Sith Lord. You are intended to learn what your master knows, and one day replace him. If you are to replace the Emperor, you must be strong. If you have no hope of defeating Luke, you will have no hope of defeating your master)

"I have no intention of replacing the Emperor," you reply.

(Ambition is a virtue. Strength, power. Victory. There is no power to be gained through obedience.)

"I'm not taking any kriffing advice from a dead guy," you reply. "If it worked out so well for you I think you wouldn't be here to tell me about it."

(Power is perception) the Shadow says (Remember that)

The door to your meditation room hisses open, light spilling in, striking the shadow which instantly dissipates. Light outlines Sedriss who stands looking down on you with a cruel sneer on his face.

"We've arrived in the Tobali System, my Lord. Rhen Var is within our reach," Sedriss says.

You mirror his grin. "Perfect. Let's finish this."

Okay, that wraps today. Up next, we'll probably finish this little Rhen Var expedition and see the outcome of it.
