"Iris?" I ask, looking down at her as she sniffs the air. Which suddenly gets colder as her expression turns grim and her eyes become ice.

"Blood" She says, walking a bit faster as I follow behind her, calling my spear from nothing just in case some kind of beast or mad monster jumps out at us "I smell blood, freshly spilled its practically still warm on the air. Someone or something has been killed just up ahead, and I want to see what it was"

"of course, just stay close to me, whatever killed it is probably still close by" I say, leaning over her shoulder as she grins like her mother

"Oh I hope it is" She says, shining her mouthful of fangs as they all return to her smile through our magic.

She rushes along, her hair flowing behind her as she starts to "Skip" over the path, leaping from step to step as I grab onto her shadow and let myself get dragged behind her. It doesn't take long for me to smell what she is, as the air becomes thick with the smell of carnage, just like a butcher's shop

Then suddenly, just as I see light at the end of the hallway of trees Iris pulled me down, we stop and Iris gasps. I flap my wings so I don't slam into her,and perch on the air above her and frown as I see what she's so surprised about.

The path ahead of us is strewn with cracked bones and torn innards, stretched out like webs over branches and a clawed up, blood soaked sign

"Hmm, looks like Kelly's work" She says, trying to sound as calm as she can

I figured out the perfect place to mark Iris. Her heart. Since she draws her strength and weakness from it, I figure it counts as possession and only merging/fusing could she draw more power from us. As well as working as an emergency last ditch effort for her not to die.

Sorry if I happened to be the last one to figure this out though in advanced, but I still feel like bringing it up. Also would be cool if Iris drains Alith and gets her endless stamina, though I'm unsure how to pull that off without it seeming off.

True, but I don't see Iris getting anything out of doing that. I may be using my personal headcanon for vampirism here, but I think she needs to fully devour the soul to gain anything meaningful. I shout as Iris runs her hands through the puddle of what used to be a living creature, looking disturbed as she lifts her blood soaked hands up and sniffs it like she's sampling wine "I didn't take her out this time, she's been complaining again, but I didn't let her out I swear"

"I'm not accusing you of anything, darling" She says as I try my best not to look at the piles of half eaten, slobber covered flesh covering the stones in front of us as a little voice in my head reminds me I've seen something like this before, but I can't let myself remember how and when "Just pointing out the similarities, whatever did this was as gluttonous as she is"

She turns back to me, and frowns as I start to try to force myself to remember where I've seen a bloody mess like this before.

"Hey, don't force yourself, if you can't handle it just look away" She says as I frown, biting the back of my thumb as I remember a day of my old life, feeling sick just imagining it again.

It was a cold morning in winter, back when I was still on the farm of course. I had to clear out snow so our crops wouldn't die, and because I woke up first. And I don't know what got into our homestead, but something did and ripped our sheep to pieces. Ergh, my stomach hurts just remembering the sight, its almost exactly like this one. Dad said it was wolves, but he was a stupid drunk so who knows what is was.

"No no" I say, my voice cracking as I taste my own blood "I can handle it, it just looks so much like a wolf getting into a sheep pen"

"Well, we're all made of the same stuff more or yes" Iris says, grabbing my hand as I frown and now "if its bringing up bad memories we can just leave"

I shake my head and walk forward, every step feeling lighter than the next.

"Its fine, it was just a stray thought, I have much worse memories from back then anyways' I say as she looks up at me sadly as i see a pair of ghosts forming from the low fog ahead of us.

One of them is a girl with her chest ripped open, staring blankly down the road as an older man holds his hat to his chest, biting his lip, his face more shredded meat than anything else.

"Damn shame init?" He sighs, glancing up at the sky "the gate closed before we could get in, must've been terribly painful huh sweetie"

The girl says nothing as I notice these two are dressed like....well farmers. My eyes twitches as I walk closer, yeah they'll probably be terrified of me if they see me like I am....tch, guess I have to put the real, wonderful me under wraps for a while.

Snapping my fingers, I dull myself down a bit and make myself look not so...well demonic as I walk up to the smiling and brutalized specter

"....God" Iris says, gripping my hand tightly as I whistle sharply to get the man's attention.

"Hey but at least we won't be hunted any....oh?! what are you doing out here! how'd you survive the night? are you dead as" He says, before he see's Iris and freezes up

Yah, I'm drawing wicked fast today. If you check the time between two drawings up top you'll see 3 minutes passed. That means I typed, posted, drew, and reformatted to a lower resolution so I could upload, the second drawing in 3 minutes.

So based on that I'm guessing it took me about a minute for the actual drawing itself, give or take some unknown amount of seconds.

I'm having the trouble where my players don't really have much initiative. They aren't taking any of the hooks or baits that I'm leaving out, or taking initiative in direction.

I think the problem with OPQ was pacing. It was fine as long as it was running along, but staying stuck on one base for too long made it kind meandering. it really should have been more in a 1 Base= 1 Arc style.

Thats hard to say anything about without knowing context, if they aren't taking your plothooks, what are they doing instead?

If players show interest more in one thing than what I had planned, when I DM, I usually find its best to just adapt my plans accordingly.

Most QMs are, thats not really a big deal, you get better in the process of writing.

You need to keep in mind that, while its healthy, its not always accurate to search the flaw in your own writing.
It can be as simple as the premise not being interesting to a lot of people, or you just got a batch of players who are particularly lacking in agency.

Akun especially in recent months had a huge influx of "summerfags" coming for various smut stories and these people are by and large really awkward and bad about actually questing.

A really 'working' quest is a really delicate construct to put together.

So a few months later I decided to retry continuing the game but on anonkun because I heard about it, checked it out, and saw it had a bigger audience.

I can't speak much for /qst/ because HMs quests are the only thing I'm reading here, but on akun at least in most cases the issue for attendance is premise.

I've seen a lot of quests on akun that had 'amazing' writing, but didn't get much tracktion, and in fact most actually well written quests on akun don't get a lot of audience. Mostly in the ~20-30 voter range.

Akun got overrun a lot by people who came to the site mostly for smut after it got banned from /tg/ and those were very often rather unpleasent people so they made a lot of people not there for smut leave.
So for one, if your quest isn't a smut quest, its already going to have less than 30 readers right there. The majority of "audience" on akun is only there for smut, and the quality of writing etc. is irrelevant in that regard.

Even beyond the smut, people still mostly read on akun for specific 'interests', and there just isn't a lot of readership for anything outside that. Not 'none' but fairly little.
Thats mostly fantasy/magic, yuri, monstergirls. Because those were the big communities akun had before the /tg/ move and the smut influx on akun.

If your quest is outside of that nieche, you are already off to a very difficult start, like, if you write a sci-fi quest with a maleprotagonist with no smut, you pretty much lost. You could be a amazing writer, but the audience just isn't there.
By which I mean, you might get like 3-5 voters and delta.

From that point on, all that can help you is consistency. If you run for long enough, you have better chances of getting more readers, and better chances of figuring out how to engage the readers you got.

The char gen was done here on qst, so it actually worked. That's the game I had the best attendance for, with about three players.

They created three males and a female. Or.. maybe they created three males and I created the female? I don't remember anymore, but I know they named all of them.

Then in the second session on QST I forced a female lead on the players and her name and everything (She was an old character that I'd already had for a long time) and I switched voting methods just to see if that would help.

Then when I went to Anon they could have chosen any of those characters to continue with. I think it was sort of natural they went with the male because he was the lead of the very first quest. (Hence of the prologue on Anon)

I don't want in any way to disrespect HM.

I play his games more than I run my own quest. I only just recently decided to try it out again after a few months.

The reason I say that is because it's like a conflict of interest right. Sometimes I could be running at the same time as HM and I would never, ever, ever, ever, ever, want to take players from HM or anything weird, rude, awkward, or anything like that.

Some girl got horribly murdered and people are seriously trying to bring her back to life as a sentient, animate, novelty cake? What the hell kind of a life is that? Come on anons, give a few seconds of thought to the consequences of actions, it's what makes decisions in quests matter.

But hey, I am the one who thinks Mali's "cooking" magic (magic that doesn't involve cooking at all and just turns things into pies) is kind of goofy, so maybe I just hate fun.

HM is incredibly good at rolling with whatever people throw at him, but damn if it doesn't look hard sometimes.

I show up from time to time and try and help keep HM's quests as coherent and fleshed out as possible, it's how I choose to contribute. There is a lot to love in them, and the cool thing about quests is getting to be a part of something you love.

That sense of investment is what makes reactions like CUA's possible.

All I ask is to have a care and think before going through with something just for the hell of it.

Well spoken. And in the absolute worst case scenario we have the ability to turn her body into whatever she wants it to be. It just seems like something Mali would do: A soul who was recently torn apart needs a new body? CAKE! And this magic works on cartoon physics, nothing bad will happen to her. The girl will get a body she's happy with eventually, so Mali can have a little fun for the moment, right?

I guess the main thing that is goofy about it to me (other than thematically, which I don't mind as much since Mali as a character makes it work--somewhat) is that it is totally redundant considering Mali has incredibly powerful "change" magic already.

Cooking magic to my mind, no matter how you try to define it, could not possibly be anything other than a narrow subset of change magic.

It's like if someone had the ability to control and create all forms of water and alter its state, but also had a completely different ability and all it does is make ice cubes for drinks.

I mean, I guess if I was TRYING to be charitable and make it work, the best I can think of to make it not redundant is have the cooking magic grant Mali the ability to do things with flavor that are bordering on miraculous. You know, making a donut that could make even Layla's blood wraiths momentarily weepy with joy or making taffy so purely delicious and innocent in its taste that it could reform a child abuser. Perhaps a toffee so good that someone might consider selling their soul for another. Flavors that move people, is what I mean. That way it is more akin to, but not quite, mind influencing magic which seems less like it is overlapping with straight physical change magic. I am intentionally ignoring some things I could be pedantic with in this interpretation.

Well, to be fair. We were doing that when we were corrupting souls. But we haven't really been doing it the normal way. As such, its become a combat specialty.

Ultimately we can do most of our cooking magic 'because' we also have changing, previously we were a lot more limited in the realm of changing things with Cooking rather than creating them.
