This quest takes place in a hyper-simplified version of the DC Universe, where all your favorite iconic heroes, villains, vigilantes and vagabonds reside. Because of the incredibly complex nature of DC’s existing collective Intellectual Properties, this universe is a neutral, baseline interpretation. This means explicit redundancies, clone characters and multiverse shenanigans will be removed almost altogether.

You will be playing as Rick Regal, a 16 year old high school sophomore who has moved to Central City with his father after his choosing to relocate for work. Rick’s path down the road to heroism, villainous conquest or burger flipping normiedom is entirely up to you.

>Rules

You will be given prompts to vote over Rick’s actions and decisions in order to influence his path, and particularly challenging actions will require dice rolls and a collective mental capacity superior to that of a rock. Write-Ins are allowed and encouraged, but I am not obligated to use them.

Voting lasts until 10 minutes after initial prompting. Whatever gets the most votes goes forward. After rolls are prompted, only the first three will be counted.

>Dice
1d100, Difficulty Checks intentionally obscured.

No successes results in failure, one success results in a minor positive outcome, two successes result in a major positive outcome, and three successes make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. There are no critical successes, but critical failures result in a removal of a success.

The Vote isn't open yet but I'll count these since it's the first prompt anyway. Y'all impatient.
-------------------------------------------------------------

You finish packing your super suit into its case, then shove it into the corner of your room with a kick. The busted helmet is an obvious issue. You’re going to need to either fix it, or use something else in the interim. At this point it’s just a hazard. As for your heroism in general, you’ve got a few options swimming around your head.

The Flash mentioned the Rogues being unusually active, even for Super Villains, and crime in general spiking drastically in Central City. While Flash is busy taking care of the bulk of the issue, you could look into the cause of the spike in crime, and maybe even find out why the Rogues are so active as of late. The two are most likely connected.

You’ve met a good few people who can help you out with this, if you were so inclined to ask them for support.

>D. You work alone. Involving others in your fights is only going to get them hurt.

You tug the shirt Flash let you borrow (though you doubt he’ll want it back) off and collapse onto your bed, falling into a deep sleep almost immediately. Exhaustion has become a lot more common since you moved to Central City. With all the physical activity, fighting and damn near dying on the daily, you’re slowly starting to perfect the art of sleep management, or rather, managing to function off of five or so hours a night.

Brrrrrrring! The alarm goes off, and you almost toss your phone at the wall. Irritating, that thing is. Noisy and jarring, though you guess that would be the point. What’s the day, even? You’ve started to lose track. Not a good habit. You check the calendar on your phone, and sigh in relief. Monday, first of October. Good, at least you didn’t miss a school day. You groggily go through your morning ritual, then gingerly make your way down the steps leading to the first floor.

No one’s here.

A plate with a cold piece of bacon and scrambled eggs sits on the squat dining table in your cow-print decorated kitchen. Your father must have finished up early and went off to do whatever it is he does when he isn’t working. Come to think of it, you aren’t really sure what your dad does outside of working and reading the news. Never bothered to ask.

You frown at the food, but scarf it down anyway, hunger winning out over picky preferences. You grab your backpack and sling it over your shoulder, then shoulder the front door open.

Running around the globe will be a super annoying for someone like us since we can only go in a straight line. Besides, we should always have a backup plan. Betting on the fact that the JL will provide for us (that is if we get invited) is both super lame, and stupid. Let's not leech of other peoples money.

The cold Autumn air assaults you the moment you set foot out your front door. You zip the green and white rugby jacket you’re wearing up, and shove your hands into pockets in an attempt to keep them toasty. You start off on your way to Leawood High, taking in the ever-more familiar sights. Landmarks are starting to make themselves apparent now that you’ve walked these streets so many times, the gnarled tree that marks you should take the next right, the ancient woman sitting on her porch giving you a stern, milky-eyed glare indicating you’re about halfway there, and so on. Patterns.

Once you’re on the gently inclined street leading up to Leawood High School, you feel a little relieved. Sure, school isn’t fun by any stretch of the imagination-- unless you’re one of those people who see public school as a government funded social hive, learning optional, but it’s one of the only places that feels normal. Even your own home unsettles you sometimes, what with the tension between you and your father and the hero suit sitting in the corner of your room at all times, reminding you that you could be out there saving lives every minute you spend dicking around on the internet.

You’re early, as is made clear by a few groups of teenagers with backpacks slung over their shoulders hanging around past the front gates. You casually jaywalk across a street, then walk through the gates, only for a thick hand to clutch at your collar and slam you against the inside of the gate. Confused more than anything, you blink wide-eyed at the kid holding you up against the gate. You recognize him, the fat guy in your homeroom. His pudgy face is red, brow furrowed, practically snarling at you.

What was this guy’s name again? More importantly, what the hell does he think he’s doing? You try and push him off, but his grip is surprisingly strong, that and he’s heavy enough to keep you pinned against the gate with his weight alone.

>A. Tell him to let you go, and ask him why he’s getting all handsy.

>B. Hit him. Screw this kid. You aren’t about to let some whale rough you up! You’re a Superhero.

>C. Cover your face and ask him not to hit you.

>D. Use your power in this very public setting.

You wrap your hands around the kid’s wrist, and look him right in the eye.

“Wanna clue me in on what the hell you think you’re doing? Let me go,” you tell the kid sternly, a peaceful solution that earns you a right hook to the jaw. The impact rattles you, your face feeling numb as you stumble away from the gate and your overweight attacker. He let you go after hitting you, but after looking over your shoulder, you can tell he isn’t done. He isn’t in any fighting stance, but he’s got another hand up ready to punch you in the back of the head.

You duck out of the way, watching his jiggling arm shoot past you, and shove him, forcing him off his feet. The kid hits the ground hard, but gets up rather quickly. This time, his hands are up, and he’s eyeing you through angry, beady little eyes. What the hell did you do to piss this kid off? You try and think back on what you’ve done over the school year so far, but nothing stands out.

The teenagers grouped up around the school have started to take notice, and the two of you are attracting a little crowd that’s growing by the second. You suddenly feel a rush of adrenaline. You’re being watched. You steal a few glances at the crowd, but most of the faces blend together. You recognize a few-- The prim and proper blonde girl from your homeroom, Anna. Her name seems to connect a few synapses in your brain and you remember the fat kid’s name is Carl. Carl Cho. Another few classmates whose names you can’t remember catch your eye as well.

Cho comes rushing at you, meaty fists flying.

>A. Meet his charge, you can kick this kid’s ass. You aren’t about to go down in front of all these people.

>B. Go on the defensive, and call upon what little training you have to help you out. You aren’t about to go down in front of all these people.

You raise your fists and widen your stance just in time for Cho to rush in and thwack you with a big, meaty right hook. You were able to block it, but the impact is still enough to force you to stumble. He tosses another, and another, and you can’t seem to do anything but dodge and block his heavy fists. Now that you’re fighting him, Cho seems worth more than a glance. You have to get a good idea of what you’re up against.

About a head shorter than you but twice as wide, Carl Cho shouldn’t be the one pressing the attack here. Still, he’s a ball of energy, even as his size, and the punches never seem to stop coming. A couple of the kids in the ‘going nowhere in life’ crowd laugh and cheer the two of you on, while most of the other onlookers gaze upon the spectacle in silent reverence. What is it about fighting that interests them so much?

Finally, you’re able to force some space yourself and the fat slugger, and catch your breath. Sure, he’s sweating, but he isn’t huffing like a fat guy should be after exerting that much energy. Must be riding a sugar high or something. You brace yourself as he shoots forward, and manage to sidestep a huge left hook, countering with one of your own-- smashing right into his pudgy face. You put a lot of power in that one, but he only seems to get angrier.

Cho suddenly rushes you and wraps his arms around your waist, and you struggle to keep him from tackling you to the ground. Cho scrunches his eyes shut when you start hammer-fisting his blubbery back over and over, eventually giving up on the tactic and shoving you away instead. You stumble but do not fall, and a few people start to comment on the fight.

“Fuck him up, Cho! He prolly stole your twinkie!” one student calls out.

“Man, the fat kid’s gonna get reamed. What’s the other one’s name? Dick?” another one asks loudly.

“The tall one’s kinda hot,” you hear a girl murmur, distracting you for a moment.

Cho shoots forward and manages to put you in a bear hug, lifting you off the ground. Ow. OW. Your bruised ribs aren’t liking this!

>A. Elbow Cho in the face before he can do any real damage. You’re already messed up from the museum. He might actually hurt you.

Your ribs ache and pound at the pressure put on them, and for just a split second, you contemplate using your power. You push that thought aside, instead opting for something a little less overkill. You raise an arm, and bring down the thunder with an elbow to the crown of Cho’s head. He winces, but only digs his head into your chest as he continues to squeeze-- eliciting a sharp cry out of you.

“Fuck, that hurts!” you grunt, before elbowing Cho again, and again, and again! You start to see blood trickle from out behind one of his ears, and keep hitting him until your elbow hurts. Eventually, he relents and falls to the ground, clutching his skull. You stand there, holding your sides, and watch Cho squirm on the blacktop.

You could keep hitting him. Teach him a lesson. Carl Cho has been a menace to the school for as long as you’ve been here. You don’t know why he keeps picking fights with people, but from what you’ve heard it’s just something he does. Breaking something might keep him out of everyone’s hair for awhile, maybe earn you a few pats on the back from the students. Why would anyone let assholes like this just keep doing what they do? It’s pointless, and annoying.

The blonde girl from your homeroom, Anna, is the first to step forward. She’s wearing a blue cardigan and dress shirt, along with a conservative dress. She frowns at you for a moment, and you notice why. Your fists are still clenched, and you get the feeling you’ve got that mad dog look you’ve seen your father get when he’s really, really angry. Never directed at you, but you’ve seen him fight a few people. Back when your mom was alive, and he still drank. in Supermarket parking lots and behind bowling alleys when guys wouldn’t stop oggling your mom. He promised to stop drinking after that.

Cho springs up from the ground and throws a punch you’re able to dodge rather easily, but Anna gets knocked the fuck out instead, unconscious before she even hits the ground.

I've seen it happen, when your in a fight you're trying to hurt someone really bad, that's kind of the point. Plus we don't need the other kids to start building us up to be some punk or psychopath.

Not really. My brother didn't instigate the fight. And he was getting back up to probably push the other kid's face in. My brother also did not start fights on the reg or bully kids. He talked mad shit all the time but he never bullied anyone.

If I was able to get there before my brother's friends stepped in I would have bashed the kid's head against the brick-made planter behind him.

And you have to understand the difference between being reactive and proactive. If we just rough him up and let him go he'll probably be back at being a piece of shit within the week. If we break his arm he won't do shit for at least a month. I'd rather teach him not to fuck with us wholesale rather than that he needs to sucker punch us because he doesn't want a straight up fight. Saves us trouble down the line.

You act like the only way to get him to stop is by being more violent. This is an assault and should be reported to the school. If for some reason that doesn't work we could go to the police. What he did was illegal, and in front of lot's of witnesses.

Fighting back an overwhelming, primal instinct screaming in the back of your head for you to just break this fucker so he can’t hurt anyone else-- you let out a frustrated expletive, then punch Cho right in his fat face. Cho stumbles, and tries to put his fists up, but you tackle him to the ground and end up putting him in a choke hold. Students flood your vision, some jogging away from the scene, some moving to help Anna come back to the land of the conscious, and even a few shuffle over to try and pull you off of this fatass in your grip.

A pair of strong hands tugs you to your feet, and you turn to see a man in a police uniform-- No, a security guard with a well trimmed beard and a frown the curve of the moon. He roughly turns you back around and drags you away from Cho, who gets taken in another direction by two teachers, one of which being Dudley. You should be getting less angry, but you don’t. That asshole pisses you off. This security guard pisses you off. Having to hold back pisses you off!

The guard turns you around to face him and shoves you against the brick wall concrete-mixed sidewall of the school. He searches your eyes for a moment, and you glare back at him. Eventually, your shoulders get a little less tense, and you manage to let go a breath you didn’t know you were holding.

“Alright, you calmed down yet? Taking you to the principal’s office. I don’t want you trying to kick Carl’s ass again,” Security asks, an annoyed look strewn across his features.

You nod after taking another breath, but note how he used Carl’s name instead of just calling him another teenager. He either knows the kid or has dealt with this enough to have the name memorized. You’re betting on the latter. A pang of anger has you clenching your fist, but you let it go. You held yourself back. He attacked you, and you simply stopped him from hurting you and others. Isn’t that why you wanted to learn to fight?

The Principal’s office is small, un-decorated and sorely lacking any visible means of organization. Filing cabinets are everywhere, half open with papers and folders sticking out of them, while the other half are labeled in an order distinctly non-alphabetical. You’re sitting in a plastic bucket of a chair next to Carl Cho, who fumes in silence with that security officer’s hand gripping his shoulder. Luckily, he’s out of arm’s reach-- otherwise you’d be too worried about him socking you to pay attention.

You’ve already given your account of the incident, as has Cho. He was surprisingly honest about the hole thing, except for the part about you starting it. Punk deserves another few elbows. Witnesses gave their take on the fight, and shitty footage was pulled from the school’s out of date security cameras that barely even caught the fight.

The birdlike African American woman sitting across from the two of you narrows her eyes to squint through her too-small-for-her-face glasses resting near the tip of her long nose. She sticks a pencil into her muss of graying black hair, for safe keeping you guess, then clears her throat.

“The both of you are to blame for Miss Schmidt’s injury. Out of school suspension, one month,” she states plainly.

Fighting on school grounds regardless of the instigator results in suspension for both parties 99% of the time. The only way to not get in trouble in a fistfight at school is to sit there and get the piss beat out of you. Hell, even then you sometimes get suspended.

…The fuck?

“Wait, what? You’re suspending me? Cho’s been beating people up for no damn reason for who knows how long, and when I’m next up on the chopping block and defend myself, I get punished? What is wrong with you?” You ask the principal incredulously. You notice a namestand thing buried beneath a mountain of discarded notes and papers reading Mrs. Addles. Oh she’s addled alright.

“Mister Regal,” Mrs. Addles replies calmly, having heard this a million times before, no doubt. “The only reason neither you nor Mister Cho here are in police custody, is Miss Schmidt refused to put the blame on anyone. She’s very adamant about not pressing charges or doing anything of the sort. Count yourself lucky this is all you’re dealing with. Regardless, the two of you fought on school grounds. You will be punished.”

She completely sidestepped you pointing out Cho’s been doing this for a long time. You’re about to bring it up again when she raises her voice, drawn-on eyebrow quirked at you.

“I’m not done,” She sternly mentions, then goes on to explain how the suspension works. You get work meant to be done in school while out of school, and have to have it all done by the time you get back. Coming back before your suspension is up will result in consequences.. yadda yadda, punishment punishment. All in all it’s pretty standard, but damn if it doesn’t sting. You did nothing wrong.

Cho doesn’t bother to speak.

“That will be all. You may go home now, Mister Regal,’ Addles dismisses you, before steepling her fingers in Cho’s direction. Everyone just kind of waits for you to leave, and eventually, you do, seething.

It’s lunch time, but you’re going to have to have whatever’s in your fridge. You practically boot the front doors off their hinges, and stomp out of the building, only to see a familiar figure chewing on a burrito near the gates. Cisco. He’s standing near a thin redhead, who seems to be enjoying his sense of humor. The girl’s face is red with laughter.

>A. Approach them before you leave. You wanted to talk to Cisco anyway.

I suspect it's just to get us out of school so we can A) have crazy bad fallout with our dad and force that situation to be worse than it already is for some reason and B) let us get on with trying to be an amateur hero instead of having to go to school all the time.
But yeah, the characters and motivations don't make any sense. How many dozens of eyewitnesses watched us get dragged into a fight over quite literally nothing, and the local authority decides to give us a massively over-the-top punishment and assumes that we're the guilty party without so much as speaking to another student about what happened? It's not good. Worse, there was never a better option. We took every choice the de-escalated the situation except the one to literally just standing there and letting him put us in the hospital. I don't see any way that any set of choices that were given would have given us a better outcome.

Not that it's a bad quest, of course. I've very much enjoyed it. And this is par for the course in any quest, eventually. Even DBZ human quest, my all time favorite, had the dynamite kick fiasco. I was there through all of that, and after.
I think the real problem here is that the situation feels contrived, but has major repercussions. We didn't have a failed roll, or a way out of the situation, but now that we've achieved the ostensibly best outcome (the worst being a trip to the ER courtesy of the meatbag we fought), we're more or less going to collapse our fragile relationship with our sole surviving family member when he finds out that we've been suspended for a month for fighting on top of disappearing for three days and god knows what else. All because of half a sessions worth of choices that shouldn't have been a big deal.
If we were to have gotten an outcome this bad out of a real cape fight, I would expect it to be multiple failed rolls against a serious opponent. Last thread, a totally failed roll on a decision everyone said was horrible during a brawl with a serious villain in a hostage situation gave us no major losses except a bruised rib and an unexpected trip to low earth orbit. This thread, no failed rolls and no obviously bad decisions just gave us the worst non-life-or-death consequence we could reasonably get from school.
I don't mind a bit of a contrived plot. And like a lot of people have said, this sort of thing could totally happen in a real public school. However, having results this bad from choices that weren't particularly below-par in any way just reinforces the idea that our actions and their consequences don't necessarily line up. For a quest, that kind of thinking is vital, and this sort of narrative damages it. If we had gotten detention or been sent home for a day, I would be all for it. It could be an interesting narrative and we would probably meet some neat character in detention or something. Better, we could have introduced Cho as a character without the fallout with our dad. Now we're actually *losing* narrative options. School is out the window. Cisco and Franchesca are going to be harder to get in touch with because we won't see them every day. Every narrative that might have been introduced at a public school is on hiatus for a month of suspension. And all because of a major disconnect between how bad our choices were and how bad the consequences are. It reinforces the idea that Slinky is in total control, which reduces player agency.
That sort of thing happens in real life, but it makes a pretty anti-fun quest.

>>1557125
>Implying Slinky isn't actually a cosmic-level DC villain, capable of seeing every quest thread in ever reality simultaneously, and isn't actually a devious mastermind going for the quadruple fake

I get what you're saying about not getting any better results out of it, but what were you expecting? Mary Sue quest: the revengening? It's not a bad thing for something frustrating to happen to us. Bad things happen, and we have to overcome that, despite the shitty lot that we drew. If you hate challenge that much then why try at all? If you don't want to work for your friendships, do you even want them in the first place?

We are in a bad situation, and, as questers, we're the ones who need to find our way out of it. We have a complex series of problems, and we aren't getting our solution handed to us on a silver platter.

You could speak to Cisco, maybe explain what’s going on and bring up the investigation you wanted to get him involved him. Sure, you could do that, but that’s simply not in the cards right now. You aren’t in the mood for this. You have to blow off some steam. Cisco doesn’t even notice you, obviously too engulfed in entertaining his ladyfriend. Good. Good for him.

Marching past your friend and the girl he’s chatting up, you exit the gates and walk home, thinking back on what just happened. Given some time to process, it still makes little sense. Public schools are terrible about this stuff, you’re aware, but for it to be that cut and dry? No. That’s bullshit. It has to be something else. You start to concoct a slew of conspiracy theories, from a mob boss father to connections in the school board, to him being a psychic manipulator, but all of these start to wander into doubtful ponderings of the very possible… and probable explanation of life just not being fair.

You shake off the events that just transpired, and instead look to the future. The bright side of things. Sure, you might be out of school for awhile, but that just means you’ll have even more time to train, investigate what’s been going on with the spike in crime and maybe even meet up with Flash again. He knows all these famous heroes, right? Maybe if you play your cards right, you can do some networking.

That fat fuc-- Cho. Cho might have screwed you over by attacking you out of nowhere, but he’s been suspended as well. That and you messed him up way more than he hurt you. Without knowing the reasons behind his attack, you can’t really know whether or not you stopped him from getting what he wanted. Still, you put him out of school for awhile. That’s a win, right?

Franchesca’s still going to be in school for awhile, so you can’t just go to her place and see what she’s up to. Cisco’s at school for awhile as well. You’re all alone, at least for the next few hours. Unless…

Yeah, probably. I just am really confused as to why that one. I don't really give a damn about your taste. SOM's quests can be amusing if you don't take them seriously and just shitpost, but he's a very samey writer and he always gets too butthurt about his playerbase and throws fits and manufactured drama all the time the moment stuff doesn't go his way.

I'm not saying that frustrating things shouldn't happen. In fact, I'm interested to see where the introduction of Cho goes from here. I'm just saying that the disparity between our actions and their consequences is huge right now, and the larger that gap is, the less player agency has a role in the quest.
We went from next to zero negative consequences for a major failure in a life-or-death situation in our last fight with a big time villain, to major negative repercussions for doing nothing wrong today. No matter what sort of narrative Slink wanted to introduce, a lesser punishment for fighting in school could have done it just as well without reinforcing the idea that our actions and their consequences don't correlate. We should have wound up in detention with Cho instead, unless all of our guesses were wrong about what this narrative is leading to and he's actually got something that somehow *requires* that we be suspended.

Veering off your track home, you duck into an alley and pace back and forth, thinking on what exactly it is you want to do to let all of this… anger out. You can’t hurt Cho, not only because it’s wrong, but because there’d be consequences you aren’t prepared to deal with. Only men and women in tights and capes ever get away with busting up buildings, and that’s only when fighting crime. You even ponder getting a little revenge on your principal, but decide against it. Too risky.

“I can’t just turn everything in my path to junk, but I’m so fucking pissed.. god damnit!” you exclaim, kicking over a trash can in the alley. An alley cat happened to be in that trash can, fishing for… well, fish, most likely. Discarded fish bones, anyway. It snarls, spits and hisses at you, hair on its back standing straight up.

You’re angry, aching and all out of fucks to give. You don’t give it the time of day.

The cat bounds off, and you’re left alone in the alley. Still, you get an idea. You may not be able to turn a bunch of public property to junk, but if the property is already a technical scrap heap…

You pull a ball cap out of your backpack and set it atop your noggin. That energy builds within you, a pressure rising throughout your gut and limbs until you can’t hold it anymore. You let it go with a burst of speed, and start zipping through the city, ducking in and out of alleys and dashing past civilians with one purpose in mind: Sweet, cathartic destruction.

When you arrive at one of the Central City Junkyards, specifically the one meant for Brookefield Heights’ discarded vehicles and junk of that nature, you frown at the story-high gates and fencing surrounding the place. You briefly check your surroundings, making sure you aren’t being watched or recorded, then burst through the fence with relative ease.

You’re surrounded by mountains of faded colors, chrome and rust, tires piled every which way. It’s quiet save for the sounds of the city, beeping and vehicles rushing by outside the junkyard’s borders. Alright. You’re here. Time to break shit.

>A. Just smash it all. Don’t bother building up to anything. Use your powers and go to town.

If you’re going to be destructive, you might as well be constructive. Your power, as manageable as it is now, is still mostly a mystery to you. You woke up one day and BAM! You could run at incredible speeds and bust through things like butter. So why is it that you were absolutely fine with breaking through walls and solid objects, and broke so many bones with ease-- but when you hit the museum floor you dug a hole and almost broke every bone in your body?

You take a second to come up with a few theories, then test them out one by one, using the junk piles and scrapped automobiles. You find a nice, only mostly broken down Honda Accord, and get to testing your first theory. Maybe your invulnerability is attached to you using your ability over and over in quick succession. Careful to only use your hand as the point of impact, you proceed to speed back and forth, carving slice and slice through steel with ease.

When that gets boring, you proceed to go through a couple more theories. Certain materials being the cause, spending not enough time running, spending too much time running, closing your eyes… A a whole slew of theories. An few hours pass, and you’ve reduced a section of the yard to an absolute shitshow of twisted metal and at-a-glance art pieces embedded in the dirty earth, broken glass and bubbling rubber scattered all around. Your sneakers are starting to smoke as well.

Eventually you come to the conclusion that you have a sort of… inertia field that activates whenever you use your hyper speed. You simply remain unchanged, while the environment around you has to deal with the speed and power as which you rush forth. The field, if your bloody hand is of any indication, is finite. You were able to bust through fifteen stacked cars, all vertically stacked, but your palm got caught juuuust at the end of the last car.

What? He said that he's been "burned by too many QMs" to do something, and then I called it a lame excuse in a throw away post. Then he decided to rant about how he thought that slink "literally fucked over the entire quest and caused its death kind of fucking over" And I answered condescendingly, which felt appropriate. Where did you get lost?
>>
>>1557606
you didn't read it at all did my god you really are an idiot

I never once said Slink killed the quest I said the QM's that have burned me killed their quest
>>
>>1557606
Firstly you said his reason didn't count. Secondly he said OTHER QMS literally have killed quests like that, not Slink. A.K.A. Other Qms have burned him with shit like this before repeatedly, so he tries to avoid it. Much like a child avoid putting a penny into the light socket after getting shocked. Well most children, since your brain damage implies you gave it 2-3 more goes after the first time.

My bad. It was left pretty ambiguously, considering that there's one that runs this quest, too.
>>
>>1557636
You need to chill out, too. I just misread an ambiguous post, and things spiraled. When he explained it, I understood his meaning. Calmer heads prevail, because when people got pissed and self-righteous they didn't explain their meaning.

Figuring you’re done enough training for the day, you kneel down to dig into your backpack and produce an old spare shirt you carry around just in case. You wrap it around your hand, then zip the pack closed and sling it over your shoulder. Now that you think about it, School should be out. That means students will be out doing whatever it is teenagers who aren’t Super Heroes, or falsely accused delinquents for that matter, do. For some reason, your mind immediately jumps to Franchesca.

Sure, why not?

You duck through the hole you made in the junkyard fence, then take a quick lookaround to make sure nobody’s watching. All clear. You activate your hyperspeed, and dash through the city at skidding right angles, eventually arriving in a lovely little neighborhood that you know Franchesca happens to live in. Smoke still trailing off your heels, you casually walk in someone’s neatly mowed lawn to cool them off, then stroll towards the cheery goth’s home.

You skip the steps leading up to the porch, and rap a trio of knocks on the front door. When nobody answers, you try ringing the bell, which earns you a muffled ‘Coming!’ from inside. You adjust the cap on your head, shifting in place.

The door opens, and you’re greeted with bright smile. Franchesca’s wearing black jeans and a black tank top, but pretty much nothing else of note. Her hair’s all done up in a messy bun. Her smile falters a bit when she sees you, and without another word she waves you in. You’re confused, but decide to roll with it and head inside.

“So, suspended, huh? Thought that was gonna happen next week. I always get this stuff mixed up. Should start writing the fortunes down,” she mumbles, before padding over on bare feet into her kitchen. The Entire. House. Is black and white. We’re talking grayscale wooden furniture, to black couches, to a white shag carpet-- in fact you’re the only thing with color in the room. Franchesca’s parents must be artsy.

When she comes back into the living room, Franchesca is carrying a glass of water, and a glass of juice for you. You take the juice gratefully and sip it.

“You saw me getting suspended in a vision?” you ask casually, figuring she’d open with something like that.

Then it hits you.

She said she had to have someone ask her to read a fortune if she wanted to look into the future, right? That means someone…

Asked about you.

>>
>>1557205
Damn so Crusty just straight up disappeared huh?
That sucks now I'm not sure If i want to read the rest or not I hate getting into a story that will never be finished.
How often does this happen with quests that the QM just stops? Because I've only been here for a couple of months. If this is a reoccurring thing here I don't know if i'm going to stick around.
>>
>>1558855
Nothing golden lasts forever. Things happen, people change, ideas lose their glimmer. Some QMs end it peacefully with a last session. Some quests end with a bad end and others are abandoned. The point isn't to keep the quest going indefinitely, but rather to have a good time while it runs. If you're lucky the QM will return or they'll run another quest and you can have fun all over again.
>>
>>1558855
He has problems with his ass. Seriously. And then the /qst/ shift killed his mojo. It's unfortunate but hey, it was a good run while it lasted. Should still give it a chance.
>>
>>1558855
It seemed he had surgery and stopped after that like >>1559151 said. still though it was really well written and overall a really enjoyable quest, I would definitely recommend reading it even if it'll never really have an ending. And to be honest, quest end a lot more often then I like to admit, usually most do to be honest. Still, even if they don't always get an ending you almost always enjoy the ride. Did homeless mutant quest not ending suck, big time I felt like shit for a week after finishing it because of how much we wouldn't get to see, but I'm still happy I read it because it was a legitimately great quest and I enjoyed everything about it. Just got to take with the good with the bad I guess, but for any potential QM's out there if you ever start a quest that you're into anymore, just at least spend a thread to wrap it up nicely, it's all anyone asks for really. Quests left to die are just really sad.

he also never said goodbye or explained why he was dropping his quest.

Combined with this
>>1560216

Means there is a chance Crusty might have actually DIED.

And if he didn't explain this hobby to any of his close relatives or friends then we will have no way of ever knowing what really happened to him.

Franchesca gestures for you to sit, and after a moment’s hesitation you nod and fall onto a plush black cushion at the end of the couch. Your host sits about an arm’s length from you, legs curled up under her, facing you. She looks exceedingly comfy, limbs tucked close and snuggled up into the couch, a stark contrast to the shifting, unsure state you’re in. You try not to jump to any conclusions, but after the cheery goth’s comment about seeing your suspension in a vision, you can’t help but connect the dots. Someone must have asked about you-- paid this girl a sizable amount of money to get a fortune at least tangentially related to you.

“Earth to Rick…” Franchesca mumbles, snapping you out of your theory crafting. She watches you curiously with big, scrutinous eyes over her glass, which she tips to take a sip of water from.

“I was thinking about something,” you respond lamely, excusing yourself with a half-truth.

“Oh yeah? What about?” she chirps questioningly, canting her head and causing the messy bun atop her head to bob a bit.

“Why don’t you read my mind and find out?” you answer, a cheeky grin spreading across your face.

“Ha ha. I’m not that kind of psychic,” she says predictably, rolling her eyes. Then, a little less predictably, Fran’s expression darkens when she suddenly switches subjects. “That kid got what was coming to him.”

“Huh?” You’re not sure what she’s referring to.

“Cho. The psycho you beat up,” she clarifies, “He’s lucky I don’t show up at school that early. Would’ve hecked him up real bad while you distracted him.” She punctuates the imaginary scenario with a feeble punch. You stifle a chuckle at the noodle-armed girl.

“Oh yeah, that would’ve been terrible for him. At least he stood a chance one on one,” you play along.

Franchesca grins, her dimples making themselves known again. She starts playing with her glass, tipping it back and forth to the point of the water within coming dangerously close to pouring out and onto the nice couch. You frown at that, but figure it’s just a nervous fidget.

“So… why’d you decide to show up on my doorstep? Surprise visits aren’t something I’m against, don’t get me wrong,” she says through a giggle, “It’s just I’m getting the feeling you want to cash in that favor of yours.”

>A. You wanted to talk to her. What, can’t a guy just hang out without some ulterior motive?

>B. Cash in the favor. You need some information. She’s psychic.

>C. Cash in the favor. Things have been hectic, why not ask her out to eat? You’ve been meaning to go to that diner.

>D. Get right down to it. Who asked her to look into your future?

>E. Write-In
>>
>>1566569

>>
>D. Get right down to it. Who asked her to look into your future?
>>
>>1566633
>>1566636
>>1566665

Rather than ease into things, you decide being direct is probably the best course of action. Either Franchesca slipped with mentioning her looking into your future, or she regards it as no big deal. Both possibilities warrant further investigation, as far as you’re concerned.

“Well, I originally showed up to talk and hang out. Figured you heard about what happened in the schoolyard, and would have been interested in hearing how everything went down. Apparently, though, you already know a lot about this.”

Either Franchesca isn’t put off by the implication, or is very good at hiding it. She just kind of scoots a little closer as you speak, more curious than anything.

“Want to tell me who paid you to look into my future?” you ask, finally getting to the point.

You start to think she turned off or something by the time she answers, taking a full minute to simply sit there and think of what to say. “I can’t… just tell you. I’m not sure if that’s wise. Like, I’ll tell you that someone definitely paid me to look into you, sure,” she admits, nodding quickly.

“--But I’m not going to just let the cat out of the bag. Clients expect a certain confidentiality when using my service,” she finishes, taking another sip from her glass.

“Confidentiality? If it’s so secret, why did you drag me along on one of your fortune telling expeditions? Why do I know about that kid who paid you to see if his parents were getting back together?” you ask, clutching your glass of juice a bit tighter.

“You know as well as I do that the second one couldn’t be helped. That girl who was yelling at me about it spilt the beans. And that first one? You came along as security, remember? It’s not like I was going to tell you to wait outside. He seemed fine with you being there anyway,” Franchesca reasons, eyebrows knitted together.

Well, she isn’t wrong.

>A. Persist. Don’t just let this sit.

>B. Cash in that favor. She owes you one, and you really, really need to know who was looking into you.

>C. Relent, but let her know this isn’t cool.

“Franchesca, you owe me one,” you remind the girl. If she isn’t going to just let you know, then there has to be something to this. You figure spending that favor on this is worth it.

Your host turns and presses her back against the couch, pulling her knees to her chest. She wiggles her toes, eyes downcast to watch her feet in silence. Her expression is neutral, but having seen the girl all smiles so often, it feels much more negative than that. Still, you can’t relent just because she’s being moody. This is important. Who knows what else she told that person about you? Do they know you’re a hero? Did Franchesca see you in costume in one of her visions? Would she even tell you if she did? Questions upon questions well up and swim around your head, but you push them aside and focus.

“Look, either you’re a woman of your word or not. I’m sorry if this is a breach of whatever ethics you hold yourself to, but I have to know who asked about me. Who would spend that much money just to get some info on me? And what did you see?” you ask, watching her expression for anything revealing.

Her pale shoulders finally slump in defeat, and Franchesca looks across you with her half-lidded, dark eyes. “Fine.”

“Just so you know, I tried to get them to change up their question to something a little more specific. They wouldn’t have it, and insisted on being extremely broad with their questioning. I don’t like looking into people without permission, but it’s not something I’m morally against. It’s like… these things haven’t happened yet, so I’m not invading your privacy if you haven’t even tried to keep it private yet, right?”

That is the most ass-backwards reasoning you’ve heard in years, and you let Franchesca in on that.

“Ugh, I’m sorry. Really, I haven’t had time to think about this. I’ve only ever looked into other people as a service a few times, so I didn’t think it through too hard. This one girl asked me to see if she ended up with this guy…” she starts saying, but you pat her on the shoulder and tell her you’d like her to get back on track. She nods and does so.

“They asked to know your future. Simple as that. I looked and… saw some things. You getting suspended, eating breakfast, doing push-ups…” she trails off, and absently bites a nail. Knowing Franchesca has seen a bunch of shit you’ve done, or are going to do makes you incredibly uncomfortable. You hope she isn’t leaving anything out and that’s the extent of what she’s seen.

>Continued
>>
>>1566831
Franchesca clears her throat and continues, “Right, um, I also saw you with a helmet? It looked cool, I guess, but that was pretty much it. My power works a lot better when I have a specific goal in mind, rather than broad questions. They didn’t ask any more, paid me, and that was that,” the goth finishes, hugging her legs a little closer, awkwardly clutching her glass at the same time.

“Thanks, but I still want to know who was asking, and how long ago it was,” you say, urging her to continue.

“A few days ago. Just after that failed heist at the museum that was all over the news?” You nod, confirming you know about it. Hell, how could you not? “That girl in homeroom, the blonde one everybody talks about but nobody talks to? The smart one, Anna. It was her.”

The girl Cho knocked out.

You’re not sure how to feel about this.

>A. Persist, ask for any other details Franchesca might have left out.

>B. That’s enough. Thank her and get back to being social, though you get the feeling Franchesca is about done with hanging out today.

“Thank you, Fran. Appreciate it,” you say, sighing shortly after and loosening the grip on your glass that you hadn’t realized was quite so tight. You toss back the juice like a shot, much to your host’s bewilderment. Still, she cracks a smile and is back to her cheery self in a few seconds flat. You realize this means Franchesca is actually psychic. How else would she have known about the helmet?

“Nobody but my dad calls me that,” Franchesca lets you know, elbowing you out of your haze. What? Oh, right, Fran. It just made sense, and you tell her as much.

“Mm. Welp, thanks for coming to hang out and interrogating me, but I think I’m gonna get ready and hang out with a couple friends. You can show yourself out, unless you want to come and have to deal with four or so teenage girls being excessively annoying!”

Something tells you that invitation wasn’t serious, even if you were up for that. You shake your head, “I’m good, thanks. Hey, just making sure-- Did you leave anything out? Was that all you saw?” You ask, putting your empty glass on the coffee table and rising from the couch.

Franchesca rises after you, and you notice her get a little red in the face. “Nope, that’s definitely all I saw.” And with that she’s padding away. You don’t believe her.

“Are you SURE!?” you call after he as she disappears up a flight of steps.

After a few moments of silence, you start towards the door, only to hear the girl call from atop the steps, “All I’m going to say is you should clear your search history!”

Your eyes go wide, and your face gets hot. Without another word you exit Franchesca’s home, right out into a cool autumn day. There’s still some daylight left to burn.

>A. Call Cisco. It’s time you have that talk with him about information gathering. You should probably get started on that if you’re going to figure out what’s going on with the crime spike.
