Good Morning, Evening and Afternoon to all 10 people that are on /qst/!

You are Xavier Lewis, Doctor, Friend, Leader, and Badass. You are originally from Chicago where you worked at a small clinic, until the apocalypse thrusted you into a Brave New World full of danger and lawlessness. You looted your way through the Windy city with your two friends and made your way to the small town of Stronghurst, Illinois.

There, you met many strange but interesting characters, and successfully enacted a coup to instill a General with probable illusions of grandeur. From there, you have risked your life on multiple occasions for the good of your town, gaining you both injuries and fame.

Now, you’ve met some computer genius who has government secrets about a triumvirate, a German doctor who seems like she never has been outside of a lab, and you’re on your way to meet a man who is supposed to be "well" versed in education.

You walk out of the General’s house and into the street. You see many people walking from place to place, carrying bundles of whatever is useful in a post apocalyptic town, some carrying adhoc weapons and guns, probably on patrol duty. You try to take a closer look at their melee weapons and find them laughable. Most of them are basically either just plain kitchen knives or knives wrapped to poles. If you were to be attacked by any serious horde, or a band of raiders, there wouldn’t be much to stop them.

While the General did direct you towards someone called Tobias, who is supposed to be at the Middle School, you could certainly get away with spending a few hours talking to others.

It has been a while since you actually got to have a conversation with Peyton, which is a little worrying since you guys talked all the time before the fall. You turn in the direction of the clinic and pass a greeting or smile to everyone that comes up to you. These people sure look up to you, but you wonder if they like you or the General more.

It takes a good ten minutes but you get to the clinic, with the supplies that were stranded outside probably moved to storage. You open the door and find Peggy, the veterinarian who helped one of the soldiers with a gash, if you remember correctly. She looks up from a magazine and gives you a small smile before going back to read about celebrities that are probably dead.

There is something else that you notice though, and that is the very familiar sound of Johnny Cash being gently played through a radio somewhere in the building. You decide to follow the music and see where it takes you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOHPuY88Ry4

You walk into the back office the clinic has, and you find Dr. Anishen sitting in a chair, slowly bobbing her head and quietly humming to herself as she writes down what you are assuming is an inventory count.

Doctor Dana Anishen is of German origin, with a thick accent and piercing blue eyes. She has a clean complexion and is slightly pale, partly from being German, and partly from being inside all day, working in lab from lab. She stands at five feet and probably nine inches, making her fairly tall for a woman, but not even coming close to your 6’2’’ stature. Her hair is slightly unkempt, with strands of it coming down in front of her face, but she keeps them out of the way enough, complementing her personality.

You knock on the door frame to get her attention, but you still manage to elicit a small yelp from her as she gets sucked out of her work.

“Oh, Doctor Lewis, you scared me. It is good to see you up and moving so easily. You must have been a lot hardier than I thought, as you were supposed to still be in bedrest. I guess not even driving your truck into a wall can stop you then? Well, it is nice of you to come visit me, as filling out all of this paper work has been awfully tiresome. I did manage to dig up one of these old CD players though and I had found a stack of CD’. I have been listening to this man named “Johnny Cash”, and he is quite good. Did you ever listen to him, Doctor?” Dana asks, as she puts her papers into a filing cabinet

>No, it wasn’t really my style of music

Alright it seems like we have some good tastes in music. Writing.
>>
>In the Midwest, you should probably be asking who DOESN’T like “The Man in Black.” It’s pretty nice to sit down and listen to some of his music, even after everything went awry.

“People will say what they will about you Americans, but you certainly have good music, especially some of the more, how do you say, “vintage” music. Anyway, I don’t mean to keep you waiting, did you need something” she asks, absentmindedly.

>Actually I was her to talk to you, as I haven’t had the chance since I rescued you, so I had a few hours before I had to do something for General Tristus, so I thought I would come over to see how my two favorite Doctors were doing.

Doctor Anishen looks a little surprised for just a second, before she hides it behind a smile.

“Well this is certainly a surprise then, as I figured you had no interest in much of anything besides blowing things up and almost getting yourself killed, so what do you want to know then?” She asks, as she flashes a slight smile at that last thing she said.

You pull up a seat in front of her desk, as she gets comfortable.

>You certainly seem to be an educated young lady, so where did you go to school at then, if I may ask?

“You may indeed. I got my first doctorate in Biochemistry at the Goethe University in Frankfurt, from there I went to the University of Washington where I received another doctorate in Virology. It was there where I received a job invitation from the CDC, and while the WHO was tied closer to my homeland, I felt the CDC was doing much more efficient and useful work, and it also meant I got to interact with the Smallpox virus, even if I was looking at it behind glass. Though to be honest, the CDC and WHO worked so closely together, it didn’t matter which organization I chose, except the pay, I guess.” Dana explains, noting the expression on your face.

She gets up out of her chair and walks over to you, standing just a few feet away from you.

“You didn’t think I was this educated? Or you didn’t know where I worked? You should shut your jaw though, flies are attracted to it, or so the saying goes.” She says, as she sits back into her chair. “From there, it was just a couple of years working at the CDC, traveling to Africa and Asia, until just a week before the fall, there were all these flu cases coming out of India and China, and it was spreading like crazy. A couple of days later, the “extreme” symptoms began to appear, such as extreme violence against others. I was sent to the High School where I was conducting experiments on the citizens from Burlington.” Once again she sees the look on your face, this time it was one of mild horror. “OH NO! You must understand, that these were humane experiments, and we were not making anyone do anything against their will.” She quickly explains, trying to calm your nerves.

You know the perfect way to react to her. You narrow your eyes and you slowly move your hand to your holster.

>You had me scared there for a second Doctor, because I thought I was going to have to put you down…

Now it’s her time to look scared, but instead of the shock to you, she broke out into full panic, even going the lengths to start getting out of her chair. It was only when you start your gut-busting laughing fit that she realizes you were kidding. Either she is just naturally jumpy, or the rumors about you were a little more extreme than you thought.

1/2
>>
>Don’t have a panic attack there Doctor, I was just joking with you. I know you couldn’t hurt someone, even if you hadn’t taken the doctor’s pledge.

“Oh my, I admit I may have reacted a little too “explosive” to you, but you must understand that you are a very intimidating man, and I would be hopeless to stop you or your actions.” She says, slowly bringing out the last part, letting it slide out of her mouth.

Instead of a look of horror, you bring out a slight chuckle, and it’s her turn to laugh.

“Now, you asked and I answered, now I ask and you answer. This is how they do it in America, yes? Now, what about you? Where did you get your education? Are you even a doctor?” Doctor Anishen asks, putting her arms on the table and leaning in close.

>You probably won’t believe me on this one, but I actually went to John Hopkins, which you probably have heard of. How I wound up in some clinic in the worst part of Chicago treating gang members? Well hell Dana,I would marry you if you could answer that question?

“I don’t think we’re at that part of the relationship yet, Xavier, but maybe I could shed some light on it. Perhaps you just like to help people and you knew you wouldn’t have made a big difference working in some multi billion dollar hospital. I don’t know you too particularly well though, so maybe I’m off and you just like putting yourself into dangerous positions, whether you know it or not.” The other doctor says, quite proud of her “diagnostic”.

Well hell, you don’t know whether she hit it right on the head or not, but you certainly have been in some dangerous position most of your adult life. You certainly won’t admit that to her though, as that smug grin she would give you would probably kill you.

>Well I don’t know about that, Doctor, but there is another matter I must address. Are people actually afraid of me, or is it just you, being the frail fraulein you are?

“If I didn’t know better, Xavier, I would say you’re coming onto me, but to answer your question, people aren’t scared of you, they just know you have literally thrown yourself into danger, and you still are still fairly unknown, a sort of mysterious brooding hero from those old wild west movies I used to watch back in Germany. There is another rumor, that is unfounded of course, that you killed Abraham in his room. Everyone knows you came down and defused the situation between the soldiers and Abraham’s guard, but everything is a little fuzzy. So Doctor, are you going to tell me what actually happened?” Dana asks, leaning in closer than before, scanning your eyes with her own.

>Tell her the entire truth, honesty is the best policy

>Listen, I’m going to trust you here, like IMMENSE fucking trust, but those rumors are true. I had to kill Abraham because he sent five men to their deaths looking for bibles and he was leading this town to a theocracy. Now listen, I know I broke my solemn swear to do no harm, but I had to do it to not only keep my friends safe in the beginning, but now this town.

Dana looks at you for a few seconds before leaning back in her chair and sitting a minute, while you listen to the words of Johnny Cash, singing about being rough and tumble.

“Xavier, that is, that is just wrong. I mean if what you’re saying about him is true, he WAS a horrible person, but you still broke your code of ethics. I won’t tell anyone, but you have to live with the fact that there is innocent blood on your hands.” She quietly expresses, obviously still thinking.

She did have a point though, as you killed Abraham for no real reason other than you saw him as dangerous. The men that died on that first scouting mission in Burlington might have known what they were searching for, meaning you could only blame Abraham for what you could blame the General for too, not to mention when you killed that man for the gasoline, even though it did solve the immediate energy problem.

“Listen, I am still deciding whether to agree with your choices or not, but in the meantime, will you just sit here with me? I don’t get too much interaction with others beyond treating them for mild injuries, and I am a little too intimidated to actually go out and meet people for now. Just sit here with me and listen to the music?” She asks quietly, still half in thought.

>Sure, I could spend a little bit just sitting here. It wouldn’t hurt to sit down and listen to some music.

>Of course, I would love to just sit and enjoy some good music. God knows that I could use the relaxation, as being bound to a bed for almost a week isn’t all the fun it sounds like it is.

“Being bound to a bed, you say? Well Xavier, that’s certainly another “rumor” we can put to rest, can’t we?” She seems quite proud of that quip. “My parents used to listen to this man, you might have heard of him, Frank Sinatra? He certainly has a sort of class to him” She says as she puts in a new CD. Good thing that the clinic has priority for power, or else both of you would be stuck listening to awkard silence.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6E2hYDIFDIU

Soon after she presses play on the 20ish old machine, you find yourself humming along with Mr. Sinatra singing about life. I guess in a way, you could sort of relate it to you so far, because you have probably been one of the luckiest people in the apocalypse so far.

Soon after the song changes, you find yourself slipping into a rest that you can’t bring yourself to fight off. Maybe it’s the relaxing situation you’re in, listening to Sinatra’s voice, in a nice cool room, with no troubles in your mind, feeling perfectly fine from the injuries you sustained just a few days before, because you soon drift inst a soft sleep.

You awake some time later, and find Dana in the same spot she was, leaning back in her chair, sleeping just as you were. You guess this would the perfect time as any to go and find something else to do, as you don’t have to give any “good byes”.

Alright, we're putting up our Spy gear and talking to Peyton. Writing
>>
You figure that it’s probably about time that you have an actual sit down with Peyton to make sure your relationship isn’t suffering, and to see how well he is holding up with the whole “end of the world thing”.

You also realize that this would be the perfect time to install a set of the spy gear that was given to you by your new Roman computer genius. Since it would only take a minute or so, you walk over to the storage closet that you’ve only been in once before, just a few days after you arrived.

You open the closet and find it a lot more stocked than before, with it’s shelves bursting with all manners if supplies, anything you really could use in a general setting, most noticeably pain killers, fever reducers, and a lot of antibiotics and sterilizing equipment.

Just as you reach into your pocket to grab out the one set of spy devices you have, Peyton walks in looking on his clipboard. He jumps a little bit noticing you, but you can’t really blame him, as you were sneaking about in a storage room.

“Hey Xavier, were you looking for Dr. Anishen or something?” He asks, happy to talk to you.

He looks at you a little funny before looking at the clipboard in his hands.

“Well I have the inventory on this clipboard here, but yeah, I’ll give you some time alone. Come see me when you’re done with whatever, in there.” Your best friend says, as he turns around and leaves the room, his footsteps becoming quieter and quieter.

You set up the listening device under one of the metal shelves, and put the spy camera in the corner of the room opposite of the door, and while you can’t see what it’s seeing, you hope it can see most everything. You spend a few minutes looking over the medicine, just to try to validate your story, but you have an itching feeling that he suspects something.

You walk out of the room and lock the door, as this door is one of the only allowed to be locked by the General, and head into Peyton’s “operating” room. He is sitting on the examination table, as you take your seat on a stool.

“Alright, Xavier, you’ve been acting weird lately. I don’t know if you actually DID get some brain damage in that car crash, or if you think I’m stupid. Even though it’s a rumor, I know you killed Abraham, and you killed that man at the gas station. You could probably go on to excuse yourself for those two, as we needed that gas for Stronghurst, and Abraham was a deluded maniac with power, but you killed two innocent people. I have accepted your new position as “Action Hero”, and I understand why we haven’t been able to talk lately, but now you’re plain out lying to me? Why?” Peyton asks, a flick of fire in his eyes and a drop of venom on his tongue.

>Listen to me, this secrecy I have been using, It’s only to protect you. There are elements at work here that could get everyone I know and love killed. I know it’s not what you want to hear, but I really need you to trust me with this, and everything will be revealed later.

Peyton’s eyes flare up in anger and he looks ready to go off, but then he deflated, a change that happens in just a second.

“Fuck it, then. I know when you’re lying, but I know when you’re telling the truth, and you honestly mean that you’re in deep shit. Don’t think I’ve let you off the hook though, because one of these days, I’m going to make you tell me what the fuck is going on.” He warns, as he walks out of the room and somewhere else into the clinic.

You get outside and realize it’s past midday, probably somewhere around 3 in the afternoon. That means your nap was a few hours, a little more than you bargained for. You decide to just bite the bullet and go see Tobias, even if you’re going to get yelled at for being late.

You make sure you have your sidearm in your holster, and you set off for the small trek from the clinic to the middle school. On the way, you see a few patrols, and hear a gunshot, but other than that, everything seems to be on the up and up. The General runs a seemingly tight ship.

You arrive at the middle school, and walk through the front doors. There are a few people walking around, as well as a few guards, so you grab the nearest man that looks like he knows what he’s doing. You ask him where Tobias can be found, and after being corrected that he should be addressed as Dr. Huntz, you are sent in the direction of the old Principal’s office, who was killed in the first night.

You walk into the main of the school, and find a few people working. It seems like the General has been using the school to teach children and adults alike. You knock on the door that has “Principal” in gold, and get called inside by a voice you can say with all certainly belongs on a Texan.

You open the door and are completely surprised. There is a thing where you sometimes don’t match the voice with the right face, but this is almost like a parody of that idea. The voice you heard coming in sounds like it comes from a Texas Oil Man, but what you get is a mix of British Aristocracy and an English Teacher.

“You must be the good Doctor I have been hearing so much about, aren’t you? Well, I gotta say, it’s a real pleasure to finally meet a homegrown “hero”. Now, what can I do for you?” He asks cheerily, his Texan accent very noticeable.

>Before we start Dr. Huntz, I have an odd quest-

You get cut off before you can even begin what you want to ask.

“Cut that “Dr” and “last name” silliness out, son. While I did earn that doctorate, I’m retired, and I did my time at Exxon, so now I’m on a first name basis with everyone. Now, I think I can answer your question, because I’ve got it before. Am I a texan? You’re god damned right I am, born and raised on a ranch in the heart of the Lone Star State. Do I look like I belong in a royal palace in some freedom hating country? Absolutely, but make no mistake, because the only thing I’m missing is my Cattleman’s hat, which I lost somewhere around here. Lastly, am I a dumb hick who likes to shoot off guns in his free time? Yeah, but I also have a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering, so sorry son, but I think I just broke your stereotype.” Tobias says smugly, as he leans back in his leather padded office chair. “Now, I am sure you came for a reason and you aren’t just wasting your time.”

Well fuck, you didn’t really know he was going to go off like that, but it sure saved you some time.

>Yeah, I did. I need a windmill installed for a home, and I have the General’s permission for that. Secondly, I was told to come to you because I have a large storing of information and learning, something around a Petabyte of information about all manners of schooling, that I can’t access because of the lack of power. So I need a windmill that provides power so we can start printing out manuals and school subjects, especially in agriculture and engineering.

“Well why don’t we just hook up the windmills to the school so we can power the schools and we can print the information from here?” He asks, actually interested on why you hadn’t thought of that.

Well shit, he really has you there. You need that power for the server so you can get more info about the world, but you don’t want to give the secret out. The General certainly wouldn’t let you power the house, when powering the school could provide the same outcome. It’s gonna require some good bullshitting to get out of this one.

>The amount of power to make sure the school is running couldn’t be provided by just one windmill
>The man with this information says he will only hand it over if his home is powered
>Other
(Note that the two options I gave above have some big ways it will blow up in your face in the future, so buyers beware)

“Hmm, I never thought of it like that. You’re a sharper one than I had thought, Doctor, I’m glad you’re here with us. Now, I’ll have my daughter draw up the plans for the windmill, and it should be more than enough to power his home, so the General might want it to power some other things, but you got your way here, Doctor. I’ll be seeing you in a couple days.”He says, as he gets up to shake your hand.

Well you certainly don’t know how the fuck he fell for that, or how you got everything you wanted today, but you just hope that good luck doesn’t run out anytime soon.

+2 to persuasion

Alright, thank you all for participating in thread 6. I was a little bit of a knuckle dragger this thread, in regards to posting times and such, so I’m going to try something a little different next thread, which will probably be Wednesday, unless something changes. Thank you all!
