Hello and welcome back to Mortal Kombat Konquest. On today's episode, we'll be continuing the trials of Forrest Fox, who has found himself swept up in a scheme far greater than any he could have imagined. Havik, the cleric of chaos, has found a way to connect several different realities by merging all of their Chaosrealms into one ultra-realm. In order to finalize this world-shattering ritual, he needs six Kamidogu---each Kamidogu of Chaosrealm from each reality. Fox, with the help of Raiden, must now traverse the portals of the Nexus and travel to each alternate reality and claim each Kamidogu before Havik's scheme is complete...

Leaping through the purple portal, Fox tumbles through the furies between realms and realities, kicked unceremoniously out of the other end several feet above the ground. The Shirai Ryu lands on his feet, crouching low as he surveys his surroundings. He knows this place---Z'unkahrah, capital of Outworld. But this is not the Z'unkahrah he is familiar with. Having braced himself for things to not be within the norm, much like they were in Disorderrealm, he immediately makes for a nearby alleyway to hide and gather intel.

After catching his breath and waiting for the effects of portal travel to wear off of his body, he sticks his head out for another look. The city seems familiar enough---purple skies at night, stone buildings, a great many different kinds of people in the streets, but things seem... dirtier. He notes that several of the buildings seem run-down and decrepit-looking, bereft of any inhabitants other than squatters. The roads seem ill-maintained, and rubble is common, along with the occasional fire.

This extends to the people, too. Having travelled to Outworld several times, Fox is familiar with the many combinations of outlandish cultures and people that make up its streets. Some would dress plainly, but there are others who dress garishly. Here, in this version of Outworld, everything seems comparatively drab and plain. Everyone keeps to themselves, pulling dark cloaks close to their bodies and ignoring the others around them.

'Okay, Fox, let's think through the possibilities... Disorderrealm had perverted versions of the Lin Kuei and Shirai Ryu. What chain of events could have led to this version of Outworld looking the way it does now? Perhaps Shao Kahn is still in power, or someone else...' He dips back into the alley and folds his arms, thinking hard. 'I suppose I'll find out, but first thing's first, I need a clue on where the Kamidogu of this reality is.'

Pulling his mask up, Fox decides to leave the alley do what he does best: hide in plain sight. He blends into the crowd seemlessly, as though he belonged there, vanishing from all eyes (if any were upon him at all). Though he appears to be moving with purpose, he is in truth wandering, seeking merely to further study this alternate Outworld he has found himself in. Things are quiet, and the further he travels and the more people he passes, the more he becomes aware of a strange feeling, a tension in the air. The people around him seem to feel it too, but unlike he they seem accustomed to it.

Dark figures lurk in the alleys as he walks down a market street. He recognizes them as hinparians, perhaps the one race more gifted in stealth than a trained Shirai Ryu like himself. He also notes the occasional presence of huddles of lizardfolk who keep to themselves, and a shokan here and there. Perhaps it is because it is late in the night, but the market seems strangely dead and he knows not why. Even the merchants tending their stalls are silent, engaging only when engaged and speaking nothing otherwise.

'What is going on around here? It's like everyone is waiting for something...'

Suddenly, it happens. In the blink of an eye, several figures all around Fox draw weapons. At first he thinks he has been found out, though he cannot guess by who---Havik, perhaps?---he quickly realizes he is not the one they are drawing blades for. A man several feet from him gets a knife shoved into his back and he lets out a cry heralding the beginning of the battle.

A fight in the streets, between perhaps two or three different groups---gangs, perhaps---immediately breaks out. Figures leap into the market from nearby dark buildings, drawing weapons as they fly out of the barren windows, only to charge after landing at others who have done the same from across the way. Fox's eyes go wide as swords and daggers begin to clash and men begin to die. Nearly tripping over a corpse in his haste to escape the furious melee, he takes cover behind a wagon. He watches a man is run through by a thick blade, wondering where the guards that usually keep the streets so clear of this kind of rabble in the Outworld he is familiar with could be.

Backing away as one man leaps onto another, causing them both to crash into the cart he was hiding behind, Fox scrambles over to a nearby wall. Taking out his kusarigama, he hurls it upwards with expert skill, hooking it onto the edge of a rooftop. With the speed of a bird's shadow he scales the chain, collecting it as he goes so that when he reaches the top he can secure it back onto his belt.

He watches the battle unfold now from this new perch. It lasts several more moments, over as quickly as it started, and just as brutally. Several corpses now line the streets, and the victors vanish by whatever means are available to them. But what strikes Fox the most about this situation is not about how quickly it started or resolved, but the reactions the others have. Soon activity returns to the street as people step over and ignore the dead bodies strewn about the ground, even as they bleed out and create puddles that are stepped in.

'Where are the guards?' Fox thinks again. 'Do they not care at all?' He moves to the other side of the rooftop and encounters a similar sight to the one he just witnessed. Another brawl in the streets, this one on a slightly smaller scale, between only five individuals. One man stabs another, who in turn had just stabbed a third. The fourth and fifth stab each other, leaving the sole survivor to pick up a sack of koins and make off into the night. As one of the stab victims reaches up for help, he is ignored by someone stepping over him.

'This place has no law,' Fox begins to realize, looking around. The buildings are ruins, the city unkempt, the people uncaring and unconcerned for anything other than themselves. 'This city has become a shadow of its other self. Murderers, thieves, pickpockets everywhere...'

Studying more intently, he sees hints of what the city once was. Clearly, Kotal Kahn had been in power at some point, as several monuments that Fox recognizes can be seen glorifying his rule. But these, too, have fallen into ruin, desecrated and broken.

'That would imply Shao Kahn is not in power, because he wouldn't even suffer any remainder of those monuments to exist. Kotal Kahn cannot be in power, or if he is, he is nothing like the one I know... Who, then, has made this city the way it is?'

Something trips Fox's keen senses at that moment, and he instinctively reaches for the tanto at his side. But he knows it is already too late to hide---someone, or something, is watching him. But he knows not from where. The hairs standing up on his neck, however, do not lie. This person, unseen by some means, is growing nearer and nearer. But from where, he cannot say...

Though he feels he could make a good run for it, Fox holds his ground. He had been made, and once found, a Shirai Ryu never backs down or shows fear. That is what Grandmaster Hasashi taught him, and he holds true to it as his unknown opponent draws near.

It becomes quickly apparent why he did not immediately detect her, but he still felt her presence. For it is a woman, and no ordinary one---but rather a blood construct. Skarlet pools in front of him, rising from the crimson fluid, taking beautiful but deadly shape. Her red eyes are fixed directly upon him, and her face, though obscured by a veil, betrays her hostile disposition.

"You are not meant to be here, Shirai Ryu."

'Skarlet... In this world, she could be working for anyone.' Beneath his mask, Fox swallows and speaks clearly. "It is not by my choice that I am, Skarlet."

She unsheathes two straight blades from her back, not making a move to attack but clearly demonstrating her willingness to do so. The threat is not lost on Fox, who knows just how deadly an assassin the mistress of blood can be. "You are in violation of the accords. No Earthrealmers are allowed in Outworld. You know this, and came anyway."

"I have been sent here on a mission," he attempts to explain.

She raises her knives. "Then those who sent you know that your very presence is an affront to the Emperor."

"I can assure you that they do not," he continues. "The situation is not what you may think..."

"Enough. You are my prisoner now. I will bring you before the Emperor in chains. Would you prefer to be bloodied, or unbloodied?" She holds up her knives. "Please say bloodied. It would make my night."

As she begins to pace, Fox does the same, never breaking eye contact. Thinking quickly and keeping light on his feet, he says to her, "I'm supposed to meet the Emperor. As a messenger."

By her tone, she doesn't seem convinced. "I don't think so, Shirai Ryu. What message could you possibly carry for him?"

"I have news about a great cataclysm approaching, one that could threaten not only Outworld, but all of Earthrealm. I'm not here as an enemy---I'm here to help."

"Oh, yes, I see now," she taunts. "An envoy of doom, here to lend his aid? Outworld is strong. Whatever threat this is---if it exists at all---if you think we need your help, you are sorely mistaken."

"I am sorry that you think I am an intruder, Skarlet. But circumstances have changed. We're wasting time when I could be delivering my message."

"You can deliver your message in the form of your final words before the Emperor caves in your skull with his hammer." She holds up her blades. "No more talk! If you will not come quietly, you will scream instead!"

She charges at him, brandishing her blades! Fox readies himself, kusarigama in hand, as the blood construct lunges!

His other hand goes to a kunai, which he underhands directly at her exposed chest. The weapon embeds within her sternum, causing her to let out a cry and turn into blood mid-air. Fox narrowly side-steps the incoming blood bath, watching as it spreads out then collects into a single pool, driven by her will.

As she rises from the ground, Fox leaps at her and goes on the offensive, having quickly come to the conclusion that words will carry no weight with her. As she is just above halfway out of the pool, he swings both feet and kicks at her knees. Such force is behind this blow that he blasts her flesh out from beneath her, covering his shins in blood as she falls back into the puddle.

>>1667527

Rolling backwards onto his feet, his eyes dart around as he waits for her inevitable counterattack. His knowledge of Skarlet---albeit not much---tells him that she won't go for backup. This is strictly between him and her, and she won't give up until she is thoroughly beaten.

His suspicion proves true when she leaps up behind him, having reformed in his shadow. Fox hears her coming, his sensitive ears picking up even the barest of drops of blood upon the ground. He turns around and punches her in the face, knocking her onto her back.

This time, when she turns into blood, she spreads out in many directions. Each small puddle ripples and distorts, creating small noises all around him. Having guessed at his game, Skarlet is attempting to distract him now, presenting him with several different angles of attack she could exploint and waiting for the right moment to strike.

>>1667573

He doesn't intend to give her the chance. Taking the weighted end of his chain weapon, he begins to spin it around himself protectively, all the while turning in place and keeping his eyes trained for any sudden movements. But it again is not his eyes that detect her---it is his ears.

He was named Fox for a reason, after all.

Without looking, he brings the weighted end of his weapon upon her head. She was going to strike from his left while he looked off to the right. A clever gambit, and against a lesser warrior it would've undoubtedly worked. Unfortunately for her, she isn't fighting a lesser opponent.

He turns around and looks down upon her as she rubs her head. She stares defiantly up at him.

"I don't want to fight you," he says, giving her a chance to rethink her approach. "But if you would prefer to continue getting beaten, I'll oblige."

She stands up, knives in hand. "You think yourself clever, little mouse?"

"Fox," he corrects her. "And you are not the one I should be speaking with. Take me to your Emperor."

"So you can attempt to assassinate him? I would be a poor bodyguard to march an enemy from an enemy realm before the feet of my master."

Gathing up his kusarigama in one hand, he holds it out to her. "And how about one that is unarmed?"

Her eyes dart from his weapon to his own. "Your knives. And other blades. And your tricks---you leave those at the door, too. Then the Emperor will hear you."

"Done."

It takes several moments, but Fox hands over his weapons. Unbeknownst to her, of course, he keeps one blade in secret, as well as his smoke bombs, which are carefully concealed around his person. Apparently satisfied for now, Skarlet wordlessly walks to the edge of the roof and drops down. Fox follows her.

She leads him through the city, sticking to lone alleys and such to avoid any potential confrontations. As Fox has already witnessed, those are apparently very common. She takes him to the palace, once the heart of Kotal Kahn's empire, now a ruin. With no guards to speak of, the two of them walk right in.

Upon the second floor, where the thone room lies, that is where Fox beholds the Emperor. He had suspected his identity from contextual clues all around him, but actually seeing him is still quite a revelation. Seated upon the stone throne, Wrath Hammer at his side and the heads of Reiko, Onaga, Motaro and Goro mounted on spears around him is none other than Cao. The thief-turned-emperor surprisingly looks little different from the one he knows, but is perhaps a bit rougher around the edges, with more facial hair and scars. But his clothing, torn in many places, is still that of the old street rat he once was. As Fox looks upon him, the ninja notes that he seems bored and disinterested in all going on around him.

Other figures are in this throne room as well. Seated alongside him is Sheeva, looking like a complete contrast, for she is spendid in royal garb, with a crown and golden armor with a red cape. Ruby, clad in a slightly more revealing outfit than usual, fans Cao with a great leaf. There are more, lingering around, but Fox's eyes are squarely upon the Emperor.

Skarlet announces Fox to the chamber. "Emperor, I bring you an intruder from Earthrealm. I have disarmed him. He claims to have a message for you."

Cao, his chin resting upon his fist, sits up slightly. His tone is neutral and unenthused. "Well, go on then."

"I... have come here seeking the Kamidogu of Chaosrealm."

Skarlet turns her head and glares daggers at him, as he hadn't informed her of this. Sheeva looks over at Cao, who adjusts slightly in his throne.

"Oh, that? I have that in the vault," he says, nonchalantly. "You want it?"

Fox is taken aback by the response. "Are... you serious?"

Cao shrugs. "Eh. Maybe."

Sheeva suddenly slams two out of four fists onto the arms of her throne. "This is an outrage! Not only did this stranger not bow or give proper respect to the throne of Outworld, but now you speak so flippantly of just handing away one of our artifacts?" She stands up. "I will not stand for this!"

"Good, then you can start by sitting back down," he shoots back, clearly annoyed. "I'm not going to just hand it over, calm down."

Sheeva, clearly infuriated by this exchange (and many more like it, Fox guesses) and sits back down. Cao leans forward and cups his hands together.

"Don't mind my wife. I'm really not one for all that proper ceremony garbage." Sheeva scowls, but says nothing. "So... why do you want it?"

"A cleric of chaos, Havik, seeks this Kamidogu. He wishes to use it to bring about unparalleled destruction."

"Well, I know that. I keep him around as an advisor."

"You... what?"

At that moment, as if on cue, Havik appears from behind the throne, walking calmly with his arms behind his back. Though dressed very similarly to the other Haviks he has encountered, this one wears a guise of being completely human-like, with no bone exposed. His face, completely normal-looking, is set with a confident and knowing smile.

"Your majesty, if I may be so bold," he begins, "this intruder is lying. He is from the Shirai Ryu clan---you remember them, yes? Deceivers, assassins, all of them."

Cao cocks a brow upwards. "How do I know this isn't one of your schemes to get the Kamidogu from my vault, cleric?"

"I wouldn't be so blunt as to send a fool such as this before you," he replies, looking out at Fox. "No, this one is working for someone else... And clearly in far over his head."

The thief taps a few fingers on his armrest. "Alright. What do you suggest?"

"Kill him immediately."

>He's lying. He's planning to steal the Kamidogu from you.

"Yeah, I figured. He's always trying to get it," Cao shrugs. "It's not like I trust what he says anyway."

"You are very wise to do so, Emperor," Havik bows. "But how can you trust the word of this stranger more than mine?"

"That's also true," Cao scratches his chin. "Well? What else do you have, Earthrealmer?"

"I know what Havik's true scheme is. He, and five other versions of himself from different realities are plotting to create an ultimate Chaosrealm and destroy your Outworld out from underneath you. He can only do that with the Kamidogu."

For a moment, the room is quiet. Cao sits back in his throne. "Well, that's definitely a new one."

"You don't have to believe me, but every moment we waste is precious time lost. Havik is twisting the very fabric of reality and threatening to rend the realms apart!"

Cao looks over at Ruby. "What about you, Ruby?"

Pausing in her fanning, she says, "I don't think the stranger's story makes any sense at all. You have the Kamidogu, great Cao Kahn, and without it Havik cannot hope to achieve whatever it is this one is speaking about. Other realities? Such things are the folly of children."

Fox catches Havik giving her a subtle nod of approval and he can hardly believe that nobody else seems to catch what just happened. But Cao seems convinced, nodding as he says, "Well, you are much smarter than I am. You would know more of such things."

"Don't listen to her," Fox pleads.

"I have to. She's the the mother of my... how many kids?" He looks to her for an answer, and she holds up three fingers. "Right. Three. If I don't listen to her, what does that make me?"

Fox is dumbfounded. "Three kids?"

"Well, that's just counting her. The last full count was at---"

"No, I don't want to know," Fox says, shaking his head. 'This is perfect. Cao is an emperor of hedonism and boredom, surrounded by liars and corruption. His very city is rotting from within... How can I convince him to help me?'

Looking up at the throne, as both Ruby and Havik continue to poison his mind, Fox rationalizes that he needs help from someone on Cao's side to counter their influence. He steps forward slightly and asks, "Cao, where are your sisters?"

Suddenly, everything grows dead silent. All whispers cease, and all eyes stare wide. Even Sheeva's mouth parts slightly in shock.

Cao, who had been looking at his advisors, slowly turns his head. "What did you just say?" His brow furrows and his eyes darken. "What did you just say?!" he repeats, only louder and stronger.

"I... asked about your sisters."

Cao grabs his Wrath Hammer and stands up. "Nobody... NOBODY TALKS ABOUT THEM!" His eyes blare green light as he grits his teeth. "Who do you think you are, to come in here and ask me that question?!"

Fox holds up both hands, but widens his stance in preparation. "Cao, listen to me, I didn't know. I'm sorry."

"You're going to be... YOU'RE GOING TO BE!"

With the fury of Shao Kahn, the Emperor leaps forward and brings down his hammer, smashing it onto the spot where Fox was standing. The ninja had already leapt away, however, and lands nearby. The shockwave from the blast nearly knocks him over as Cao straightens and stares at him.

Fox hears the door behind him being closed, and all others in the room quickly spread to the walls to avoid being caught in their Emperor's rage. Fox notes the wide smile on Havik's face before the cleric slips into the shadows of a hallway.

"I'll mount your head on a spike!" Cao cries, charging forward.

We can't disarm the Wrath Hammer, and Cao is naturally dodgy on top of his Kahn-enhanced strength. However, he's in a rage, meaning he's sloppy as fuck. Eyes wide and light on his feet, Fox again dodges the swing of the lethal hammer. The ninja bounces back on his palms, flipping away as Cao smashes it onto the ground.

'Well, this isn't good,' he thinks to himself. 'But I've fought Cao before, and he's in a rage. Distracted. Still, he's channeling all of his power and he has no reason to hold back, so I can't get too confident in his limits...'

The Emperor turns and hurls his hammer at Fox, who crouches low to avoid it. The weapon flies over his head and break's Cao's throne in half. Sheeva brings a hand up to her face and groans, as if to say, "Not again..."

Fox darts in before the hammer can return to the thief's grasp. 'Pressure points. I need to disable him. I don't want to hurt my friend---even if this isn't quite the friend I know.'

Before he can get up close, Cao instead surges forward, his body awash in green energy which propells him ahead like a truck. And that's what it feels like as he shoulder-checks into Fox, like he got hit by a truck. The ninja is sent soaring backwards, hitting the ground rolling. After performing his rush attack, Cao holds out his hand and summons his hammer back.

'On second thought, maybe I do want to hurt my friend,' Fox thinks with a groan.

>>1669761

Reaching for a smoke bomb, Fox hurls it at Cao. It hits the Emperor right in the chest, obscuring him in a burst of colored smoke. Hoping this could be the distraction he needs, Fox runs in from the side---but all he finds instead of an opening is Cao waiting for him.

The enraged thief lowers his hammer and twists, bringing it up in a spinning uppercut that connects with Fox's chest, robbing the Shirai Ryu of all breath. For a moment his world turns white, and then he is flying. Fox hits a section of the wall which had been maintained poorly and thus is sent flying clear through it, out of the temple and into the city. There, he lands on a pile of crates, crashing through several of them and smashing them into splintered messes.

Before today, Fox had occasionally wondered what it was like to be on the receiving end of that hammer when he had fought alongside Cao. After today, he never will again.

The ninja picks himself up and coughs, gasping for air. His chest feels like a train caved it in, and his head is swimming in pain. Reaching for a nearby wall, he braces himself against it to try and recover some of his strength.

Knowing Cao, he's going to come looking for him. 'Need to get out of here... Need to stop Havik... Need to get the Kamidogu...' Fox gasps a few more times as he loses himself in the streets, looking for a good hiding place.

Taking out the small tablet that Raiden had given to him, he attempts to communicate with the Thunder God back at the Nexus. A small image of him appears, blue and almost holographic-like. "Fox? Are you wounded?"

"I ended up on the wrong end of a Wrath Hammer," he reports, groaning as his back slides down a wall. "This version of Outworld is a mess. Cao is the Emperor, but he's almost nothing like the one I know. No morals, nothing to care about... I think his sisters are dead. I mentioned them and he flew into a rage..."

"What about the Kamidogu?"

"He has them in his vault, but I have no allies in this realm. Nobody to help me."

"That is because you have not looked hard enough," a voice says, speaking to him from the nearby shadows of an alcove. Fox prepares himself for Kombat but what emerges is a woman whose upper face is bound in thick cloth---she is blind.

"Who are you?" Fox asks.

"My name is not important. What is important is what is happening. This realm is covered in a dark fog, a thick haze through which only the blind can see."

"A prophetess of the blind seers," Raiden says. "You should listen to her. They are in our Outworld as well, and have been useful in the past."

The approaches, kneeling next to Fox. "The Emperor of this place is as lost as the people that walk his streets. He knows not what he does, for he knows nothing of what he could be, or has been. Wallowing in pain, he seeks desperately for that which he can no longer obtain."

"Which is what?"

"He is surrounded by those who poison his thoughts and worship his every action. Harem girls keep him sated but he knows not love. Food and drink have lost their appeal. The people of his court take advantage of him, and his position as the strongest warrior in the realm has become like a prison. Too prideful to ever back down but too powerful to ever lose, he now longs for days when he lived a life free from such restrictions. The realm has suffered because of this, and all order has been lost."

Raiden looks up at Fox. "You must do what you can to make Cao see the error of his ways."

>But where do I start?

"But where do I start?"

The blind seer holds up four fingers. "Start with the one closest to his heart. The only one more prideful than he."

"...Sheeva? I don't want to argue, but have you seen the way they treat each other?"

"No. I have not. I am blind."

"Sorry. I meant, they hate each other."

"That may be only what is on the surface. Consider something else: deception has taken root in the Emperor's court. Soon, his enemies will move against him. There is one who will not betray the Emperor, no matter what she feels for him. They are bound in marriage and she respects his strength, if not his demeanor. She is the one who you must speak with."

Fox slowly nods. "Okay. That's better than nothing, I suppose."

"You must be wary. The forces of chaos are moving against us, positioning their pieces to strengthen their position on the board. There are greater things in motion than any of us can know and few of us can see. But you, you are anomalous to the designs of chaos. This is why you were chosen. Be wary to not fall into the traps of chaos."

Fox narrows his eyes, bewildered by her words; she seems to know much more than she lets on. "I'll be careful."

"Soon, you shall see the path, and all will be made clear," the blind woman says, moving back into the shadows.

"Be on your guard as she says, Fox. And move quickly. You must secure the Kamidogu and return to the Nexus."

"I will," Fox swears, and the image of Raiden fades. He slides the stone back into a pocket inside his shirt and thinks. 'Well, now to get at Sheeva somehow...'

'What I need is a distraction. Cao is going to be looking for me until he cools off, and he's probably got his lackeys doing the same. There's got to be something I can do here in town that would draw all eyes away from me. But what?'

Keeping to the shadows, he makes his way back out into the streets, once more vanishing into the crowds. He falls back onto his training to look for ideas. The simplest means of distraction are often the most effective. But what can he do to make a distraction big enough to stir Cao out of his stupor?

'What I need are enemies of the Emperor... An attack by them might just wake this city up. But those severed heads around his throne... who else could be left in Outworld?'

As Fox passes by several outworlders, he notes that he sees many kinds, but not one: tarkatans. Drawing on what knowledge he has of Outworld, as they historically supported Shao Kahn in the past in his timeline, it's likely that they did not fare well under Kotal Kahn and then Cao's reign. The real question, then, is where to find them, but he has a good idea where to start looking.

Approaching an animal vendor, Fox makes use of his skillset and limited resources to quickly and efficiently secure a means of transport. Which is to say, throwing a smoke bomb in the vendor's face and stealing a mount before the man can argue about it. Within minutes the ninja has cleared the city, riding out into the wastes and heading straight south, riding on the strange horse-camel-beast. He crosses through the Living Forest and into the wide, open plains of the Wastelands.

Fortune seems to smile upon him, for within minutes he is set upon by a group of the viscious mutants. The tarkatans leap out from the hills and surround him, blades emerging from their arms.

"Foolish to come alone!" one of them snarls. "You look tasty. Make a good treat!"

"I've got a better treat in mind. How about everyone in that city up north?" The tarkatans look at each other, confused. "Take me to your leader. I've got an offer for him that he cannot refuse."

The camp of the tarkatans is a sparse thing, with a few huts surrounded by sharpened stakes, all centered around a large pyre. It is here that Fox meets and speaks with Baraka, a strange experience, considering that every other time they have met it has been as enemies.

Here, though, in this universe? The tarkatan is desperate, and a shadow of what he once was, but lacking awareness of it. He points an arm-blade at Fox and threatens, "I could rip you to shreds in an instant, meat!"

"But that wouldn't get you revenge on the Emperor, now, would it?" Fox replies calmly. "You want to get into the city, and I can do just that."

Slowly, Baraka lowers his arm. "How?"

"I can open one of the gates for you, then you swarm inside. Easy pickings."

"You send us in to slaughter? We get slaughtered instead!"

"That's where you're wrong. Have you seen that city lately? It's not what it used to be. No guards to speak of, no order in the streets. And the Emperor? Lazy as can be. He's grown weak." Fox smiles, even as he lies. Cao may be bored but he's anything but weak.

Not that a dull mind like Baraka knows that. The tarkatan scratches his chin with a clawed finger. "Fine. But what do you get?"

"I have my own reasons. Besides, once you're Emperor after taking out Cao Kahn, surely you'll remember who helped you get there?"

Baraka leers and grins widely, his needle-like teeth parting to let out a howl of bloodlust. Fox smirks; stoking the tarkatan's ego had the desired effect. As Baraka rounds up his men, Fox departs on his mount, heading back up north. Getting into the city is slightly harder than leaving, as what few guards are left are undoubtedly watching for him. But he knows a secret way into the city, through the ancient aqueducts that Cao once showed him. They utilized the very same opening during a scouting mission at the Siege of Z'unkahrah to spy on Onaga's camp, and now he would be using it again.

He finds the tunnel opening and sets the mount off free---he won't need it anymore. Once inside, he navigates the dark tunnels and passageways until he can find an opening back to the surface. The Shirai Ryu sticks to his plan and makes his way to the west gate, sealed shut but unguarded from within by anything more than lazy guards. A quick smoke bomb and some hard-hitting punches knocks them out, allowing him to get at the gatehouse and the levers within.

He pulls on all three, and rusted chains begin to move as gears shift and creak. The large gate begins to open, and within moments in swarms a score of tarkatans, ravenously attacking the people of the city with reckless abandon. Fox smirks and slips into an alleyway; this is just what he needs as a distraction.

With the ruckus this causes in the city, it doesn't take long for the swift hammer of Cao to fall down upon these intruders. The Emperor himself has come to deal with the problem, likely to work out his frustrations from earlier. He is accompanied by his personal guards and some members of his court, and it is precisely this reason that allows Fox to sneak up on Sheeva. The shokan stands on a broken platform overlooking the square that Cao is rampaging in against the tarkatans.

"Sheeva," Fox calls out her name, and she turns to behold him. "I would approach you with proper respect, as I hold you in extremely high regard, but I don't know your titles."

She puts all four hands on her hips. "I suppose it matters little, Earthrealmer. But you may call me Empress."

"Very well, Empress... Do you believe my story? That I am from another reality entirely?"

"I believe that you believe it," she says simply. "But that does not mean I will help you take the Kamidogu in our possession."

"Damn the Kamidogu for now. I need you to believe me when I say that I am not your enemy. Havik, and those who take his counsel, are."

"This I know. But despite my efforts, I have been unable to banish that shifty chaosrealmer from our court. My husband does not listen."

"Surely there must be some means to make him," Fox offers. "Do you wish to see him and your realm perish?"

"Of course not!" She steps forward and fixes a firm gaze upon him. "This empire may not be what it once was, but I will never see it fall."

"Then I ask you to help me. My reality is in danger as much as yours, and in the one I come from you and I fight on the same side, as allies and teammates. Where I come from, Outworld is still strong, in control of Kotal Kahn. And you are champion of your people! The shokan are strong, Sheeva!"

His words seem to having quite the effect on her. "I wish things to change," she admits. "But I know not how to make them. My husband is the ruler, and I must stand by him."

"Surely you know how to break through to him. There must be a way. The Cao I know is also my friend, but in my world things turned out much better for him. He has a family, and a wide circle of friends and loved ones. What happened to him here?"

"In your world, he may have all of those things, but here... Things did not go so well for him," she says, and leaves it at that. For a moment, she is deep in thought over Fox's words. She looks up and says, "When he is calm, I can speak to him. But I know not to what ends you desire."

"Look at the city now. It's nothing like it was under Kotal or Shao Kahn. There must be a way to make him remember the way things used to be, preferably without bringing up his sisters."

"What you must understand is that Cao was never around for Shao Kahn. He was, however, under Kotal Kahn's rule. He despised him, and so when he deposed him with the strength of Shao Kahn, he let Kotal Kahn's empire fall down out of spite. Ever since, he has ruled from a position of apathy, and an apathetic ruler breeds a low kingdom indeed."

"Yes, but the Cao I know always tries to do right. He cares about his friends and family and fights so that he can hold onto them. What happened to him here? What happened to his sisters?"

"He failed to save their lives. The bug-witch, D'Vorah, killed them both. I believe this is the time when Cao stopped being happy, when he lost his family."

"But he could build a new family. He has kids, right? Surely he likes them."

"Many of them are too young to fill the void in his heart. I know why he seeks to have children, so that he may somehow fill the hole in his heart left by his sisters, but he knows not how to raise them, how to love them as a father. This does not bode well, as they could be raised disloyal to him."

"What about you? Have you given him one?"

She shakes her head. "No... I have not."

"Sheeva, have you ever even tried connecting with him at all? He's your husband."

"I am not very good at 'connecting.' He may be strong, but his person is repulsive to me."

"But he doesn't have to be! I know this for a fact. He needs something, someone, to care about. Where I come from, Cao was selfish and hated Kotal Kahn but he loved his sisters more than anything. In time, he grew to care about others as well, even coming to see Kotal like a father. I'm not going to say he's the most adjusted person but he's not..."

Both of them look down and see Cao going wild on Baraka, smashing away at the tarkatan leader with his hammer. The other tarkatans are all dead, and though Baraka can put up a good fight, his skill and ferocity pale in comparison to Cao. The Emperor brings his hammer down upon Baraka's arm-blades and shatters them both before he finishes him off with a blow to the skull.

Fox looks at her. "Sheeva, you may be the only one who can help him."

She is silent.

"Let's come up with a plan," Fox suggests. "Can you get him alone? Share some private time with him?"

"I may be able to," she says, folding her four arms. "The night draws on. He will tire soon. I can ensure our bedchamber will be emptied."

"I'd recommend it," Fox says. "Do you think you'll need my assistance?"

"I can handle my husband," she snaps, reminding Fox that they are not exactly friends in this timeline. "I will attempt to get him to consider, at the very least, the possibility that what you speak is true. But if I were you, when next you meet him, I would not advise mentioning his sisters."

The ninja nods. Down below, Cao begins to leave the clearing. Sheeva straightens her cape. "I had best head back to the palace. He will be tired now, and in need of rest."

Before Fox can reply, she crouches low and lifts off, leaping high into the sky. Fox watches her as she makes her way back to the palace in three simple bounds. 'I forgot she could do that,' he thinks, somewhat amused. 'But now what to do...'

'I hope Sheeva can get through to him,' Fox thinks. 'With Cao heading back to the palace, Skarlet shouldn't be far behind. It's time I got my gear back.'

The Shirai Ryu tails the Emperor as he walks through the streets. Unlike before, when he was among the people, they all part to avoid Cao, speaking in hushed tones or not at all. Cao doesn't look at any of them, he merely walks with his eyes slightly downcast, silent as a grave.

Even so, he is watched by his protector Skarlet. Fox hones in on her through his observation of Cao, but despite his efforts he is unable to corner her. The blood construct is simply too slippery, and in a moment of overconfidence he exposes his position to her when he attempts to ambush. Skarlet slips into the floor and runs away from him, reforming out of a nearby wall.

"The Emperor will be most pleased when I bring him your skull," she says, holding his very weapons up. "Let's see how well you do without these, shall we?"

Fox holds up his fists and doesn't back down. 'It's a good thing she isn't going for help or alerting Cao. She's too arrogant for that.'

Skarlet begins to whirl the bladed end of his kusarigama in circles alongside her. "Time to taste your blood!"

The sickle barely comes within an inch of his skin, but rather than let it go, he reaches up with his hand and catches it, while also bringing up a foot to hook around the chain.

Scarlet is caught unprepared as he uses the momentum of his backward-motion to flip into the air, pulling on the chain. She is dragged to the ground as he lands, wrapping it around his arm and foot and getting into a strong stance.

>>1674201

Letting out a grunt of frustration, Scarlet's hands tighten their hold on the chain as she sinks into the floor, vanishing into a pool of blood. His eyes go wide as the chain starts getting pulled within, and despite his efforts to hold his ground it begins to drag him inside. A sudden burst of strength yanks on the chain from her end, causing him to topple back. Betrayed by his own manuever, the chain wrapped around his foot slides along the ground as he is pulled up to the puddle, then inside of it.

He claws at the ground, desperate to hold onto something, but is unable to grasp anything but dirt. Taking one gulp of air before being completely submerged in a world of warm, red blood.

An ocean of red and strange shapes surrounds him, and a current of malevolence sweeps through it. He cannot see far in the miasma of her very essence, but he knows that he doesn't have long. Reaching for the only solid thing he can grasp, his chain weapon, he wrenches it back to his grasp and unravels it from his leg. Around him, serpentine-like tendrils begin to reach towards him, spiked apendages of solid mass slicing through the blood, and he knows that they could kill him, or at the very least keep him from escaping until drowning.

With all of his strength, he looks up at the one beacon of light and hurls his weapon out of it. The sickle bursts from the puddle and hooks onto something, and taking advantage of this he yanks himself upwards. Like a man bursting from a pit of quicksand, Fox lurches out of the pool of blood. He gets about halfway out when he is violently surged out the rest of the way as Skarlet emerges beneath him, surrounded by red tendrils. Fox lands nearby along with all of his weapon as he takes in a gasp of air, his entire form now covered in blood.

>>1674287

The red assassin doesn't give him much of a reprieve. Within moments she sends the tendrils hurling towards him, intent on impaling him where he lay. Fox sees this coming and quickly adjusts, crouching so as to avoid such a fate, but as they stab into the ground around him she severs the bond of the tendrils about halfway. They immediately fold inwards and weave about each other, forming a cage around him that he now finds himself trapped in!

>>1674335

"I don't think so!" Gripping his sickle tightly, he slashes in front of him and cuts down three of the tendrils before leaping up and breaking through the hole. He is cut, in several spots, but the pain is minute. Skarlet is surprised by his sudden tenacity and he takes advantage of her surprise by darting in and hacking at her as well.

She lets out a pained cry as he slashes across her midsection, drawing a line of red just over her belly button, then wraps his chain around her neck. He turns around and pulls, forcing her over his back and onto the ground. There, he picks up the heavy end of his chain and swings it once overhead before bringing it down onto her chest, and with an audible crack he smashes in a few ribs.

>>1674346

Scarlet is subdued, but not dead. The blood construct would heal by absorbing the blood of others. What Fox is more concerned with is his gear, which he quickly claims from her prone form. He stands up and steps back before taking a deep breath and shrugging off his minor wounds. He spits out some blood, likely hers, and takes out a smoke bomb. "If I were you, I wouldn't want to see me again."

He throws it upon the ground and vanishes in a fog of purple.

'Scarlet's out of order for the time being. But the other woman in red, Ruby, I'll need words with her.' Making his way back to the palace, it is an easy matter to infilrate it. Tracking her down, however, proves more difficult. Though the palace is a shadow of its former self, it is still very large and almost easy to get lost in. Fox moves swiftly yet silently, keeping his keen ears open for any hints---and eventually he hears one.

Havik is betrayed by his own cackling, echoing down a hallway. Fox darts into the shadows and moves closer, eventually coming upon a dark room lit by candles. Havik is here, giving instructions to none other than Ruby.

"The arrival of the interloper was more fortunate than we know. I have no doubt he was behind Baraka's sudden incursion, but we can twist this to our gain. You will go to the Emperor in the morning, with Skarlet at your side. You will do whatever it takes to get him into the treasure hall."

"Yes, my lord." Her voice seems odder than before, as if she is under some manner of enchantment.

"Once there, we spring our trap. Caught in a web of lies and despair, he will make a mistake, and we will use him to open the vault."

"What of the intruder, my lord?"

"I do not doubt he will attempt to interfere further. Send your finest hinparian assassins after him. Not even he will see them coming."

"As you wish, my lord."

As Havik parts from his thrall, Ruby leaves the room in the very hallway that Fox hides in. Clinging to the ceiling with the claws in his palms and on his feet, Fox waits for the right moment and drops down behind her.

"Looking for someone?" he asks, and she turns around. "Or were you about to fetch some of your fellow hinparians and set them on me?"

Her look of surprise quickly changes as her eyes flash. "You won't stop Havik. Nobody can."

"Don't think about fighting me. I'd rather not have to beat down a mother of three."

"Good, then you'll pull your punches!" she shouts, charging at him. What she does not see is the tripwire he had laid down in the hallway, a thin tool he keeps in the lining of his sash, and so she stumbles forward where he catches her in his arms.

"Try not to take this personally," he says before slamming an elbow into the back of her head. Knocked out cold, Fox picks her up and carries her to a nearby room and sets her on a soft, pillowed surface. "I told you I'd rather not do it. Didn't mean that I wouldn't."

With her taken care of, that eliminates two of Havik's minions. But his mention of Skarlet confuses Fox; he had assumed she would be loyal to Cao, just like in his timeline. But if Ruby had fallen under some kind of sway from the chaotic cleric, perhaps she did as well.

'I'm going to get to the bottom of this, and soon.'

Intent on revealing to Cao this treachery that has taken root in his court, Fox runs up to his bedchamber, where he prompty bursts in. Thankfully he doesn't find anything bad, merely Cao and Sheeva talking. But upon entering, Cao fixes his eyes upon the ninja and stands up, clearly upset. "What are you doing here?"

"I'm here because you need me," Fox says, striding confidently into the room. Sheeva stands up and prepares to get between them, should Cao's mood turn even more sour. "Because both Skarlet and Ruby have fallen under Havik's sway, and he intends to use them against you to get the Kamidogu."

Cao blinks a few times, his brow heavily furrowed. "That's... No. I don't believe you." He turns and walks towards the nearby balcony. "You're just some outlander. You know nothing."

Fox swallows. 'I'm about to take a risk, and I hope it pays off.' He holds up two fingers and says, "If I'm some outlander who knows nothing, then how do I know their names?"

Cao doesn't look back. "Who's?"

"Two names you care about very much. Sanra and Hua."

There is a visible reaction in Cao as his fingers tighten on the stone railing. "You... Again you---"

"Sanra, and Hua! I know of them. Because where I come from, they're still alive! I've met them!"

At that, Cao seems to halt. "What?" He looks back over his shoulder. "Still... alive?"

"In my world. My reality. You and I, we are friends. Not too long ago we sat and drank together, made bad jokes. This is because where I come from the Cao I know has friends and loved ones."

"Listen to him," Sheeva encourages her husband. "Look out at that city, Cao. Truly look upon it as you have not done in years."

For a moment, he is silent, until he closes his eyes and mutters, "I can't. I can't look at it. And that 'other me' you speak of? He's not me. He's not a failure, who couldn't save his own sisters." He balls his fists and slams them on the railing. "And now you and Sheeva both tell me I have to change, when I can't! Damn this empire, damn this throne, damn this city, damn everyone and everything!"

Before Fox can reply, Cao whips around and points a finger at him. "And now you tell me that Skarlet and Ruby would stab me in the back? So what am I supposed to de? I never wanted to end up here, where nothing matters!"

"You should stop complaining and feeling sorry for yourself!" Sheeva snaps at him in a strong voice. "It is not quality unique to the shokan to accept loss and move on after grieving. It can be found in all peoples! It is high time you accepted things as they are, and seek to improve them!"

"Listen to her, for once," Fox says. Cao's head slumps down slightly, and the ninja hears him take a deep breath.

"You say 'move on' but that's all I've been doing," he says in a low voice. "I've been going forward constantly and never looking back."

"That is also a failing," she says, approaching him now to stand alongside him on the balcony. "For one cannot simply abandon the past and act as though it never happened."

"Those who never learn from history are doomed to repeat it," Fox points out. "If you keep going like this, Cao, you'll lose everything, when you have a chance to gain so much. Don't think that you don't have anything left to lose, because you do."

"I don't know what to do," he admits, looking down at the city. "I wasn't made to rule."

"Then we must make you a ruler," Sheeva replies, putting a hand on his shoulder.

He lets out a small chortle. "I thought you hated me."

"I see... potential in you. I respect your strength. Only one with a great will could overpower the spirit of Shao Kahn. And regardless of how it all came to be, I am here now at your side, and I do not intend to abandon you."

For several moments more, Cao remains silent. Afterwards he looks up into Sheeva's eyes and they seem to share something; Fox thinks it may in fact be their first true moment of significant connection. But then Cao turns towards him, and his eyes narrow once more.

"Are you really from another world?"

"I am."

"Did Sheeva and I end up together in that one?"

"...No," Fox admits. "You, uh, ended up with someone else, but you broke up."

Cao and Sheeva look at each other, then back at him. "What does 'broke up' mean?" Cao asks.

Fox is about to answer, but he instead decides to wave a hand. "Forget about it."

"Wait," Sheeva holds up a hand. "You said I was champion of my people in your world. Does this mean I am unwed there?"

"Well... Yes, but you did end up with someone else."

"Who?"

"...You probably wouldn't believe me if I told you," he says, and then quickly changes the subject. "Listen, I could stand around answering questions about your alternate selves for hours probably, but we're racing against time. Your world's Havik has already made his intentions against you quite clear."

"He is right," Sheeva says. "I know you have often found him amusing, but he is poisoning the minds of your court. We must be rid of him."

Cao thinks hard. "Alright... Maybe it's because I just don't know any better, but I'll take your word for it. Let's go find him and kick his ass."

"I'll bait him out," Fox volunteers. "You two don't stay too far behind. If there's one thing I've learned when it comes to Havik, it's not hard to get him running his mouth."

"Easy enough for me," Cao says with a smirk. "But I don't know how good Sheeva here is at sneaking, with her being a giant and all."

"I'm astute enough to notice whenever you would sneak off with one of your harem girls," she says with a growl, red eyes flaring.

Before they can get into it, Fox gets between them. "Listen! Saving our realities first, marital issues second. Priorities understood?"

She folds her arms. "Fine."

Fox leads them downstairs, towards the treasure room underneath the bulk of the palace. They fall back into hidden spots behind him as he steps out into the wide chamber, where several locked vault doors can be found. Fox stands in the middle of the room and scans his eyes across, noting several pillars and smaller passageways through which an escape, or ambush, could be found. The room itself is dark, lit only by several old torches.

His ears are what first alert him to Havik's presence. The cleric wears wild and chaotic vestments, including pieces of metal and chain, that clink softly as he walks. Fox turns and looks at him as he approaches the ninja at a calm, almost leizurely pace with a smile.

"You again," he laughs. "Tell me, of all the people in the many worlds of the many realities, why you?"

"You aren't the first Havik to ask that question," Fox says, cracking his knuckles. "You aren't the last one I'm going to beat down, either."

"Always trying to solve problems with your fists," he shakes his head. "You Earthrealmers are so predictable."

"You didn't predict I would be here, and you didn't predict that I would be the one to stop you and your other selves. I've already taken one down."

"Am I meant to be intimidated?" he asks with a low chuckle. "You should have brought friends. I did."

At that moment, Skarlet emerges from the shadows, covered in blood. She's clearly slaughtered a few people to regain her strength.

Fox looks at the cleric. "Tell me, how did you do it? Control her, I mean."

"Blood Magik."

"...That's it, that's all I'm getting?"

"I suppose you expected a monologue for the benefit of His Majesty?" Havik looks over at a nearby pillar. "You can come out now, your highness." Fox hears Cao curse under his breath and the thief reveals himself. Sheeva, however, does not. "I'm so glad you could join us, Emperor. If you would please open the vault containing my realm's Kamidogu?"

"And just why would I do that?" Cao replies, summoning up his Wrath Hammer.

"I'll make this simple. Through the spells I took from Nitara, I've dominated the minds of several of your lovers. If I give the command, they will kill your children in their cribs."

Cao's eyes go wide. "You... You wouldn't."

Havik's eyes flash. "Wouldn't I?"

'Damn,' Fox thinks as he looks back at Cao. The thief stares at Havik with a great intensity; clearly, he is beginning to boil beneath the surface. Havik picks up on this as well, and goads him on.

"Come now, there's no need to make this unpleasant. You have no one to blame but yourself for this happening, and if they were to die it would really be your fault. I know it would be me giving the order, but you understand. It would FEEL like it is my fault, but really it would be yours. And you know it."

Cao moves up, but Fox puts a hand on his chest. They meet gazes and Fox nods once and only once. In the barest of instances, the ninja attempts to communicate without words. 'Do it. Trust me.'

Slowly, Cao lowers his hammer. Looking defeated but defiant, he shoots Havik another murderous glare before approaching one of the vaults. He lifts the head of the hammer up to it and a green aura begins to illuminate the doorway. Havik smiles and rubs his hands together, quite pleased with himself as Cao uses his magic to open the seal.

As the door slowly opens, Fox looks at Havik and asks, "Tell me, Havik. Why the Ultra-Chaosrealm? It can't just be chaos for chaos' sake, can it?"

"Your feeble mind couldn't begin to comprehend the ingredients of our plot," Havik replies. "You see the world through a keyhole. My fellow clerics of chaos and I? We gaze upon the sky itself! And soon, very soon, we will be more powerful than even the god of chaos himself!"

'You don't say... We'll just see about that.'

Gears turn and symbols glow as two great slab part and swing outwards, allowing them to behold a great treasure. Many artifacts and coins from countless different civilizations; works of art, weapons and armors both ceremonial and pratical, and piles of gold and jewels. All of these came from Shao Kahn's ancient conquests and this is but one vault of several.

Havik passes by Fox, but not without having Skarlet watch him carefully; she holds a blade up in his direction. Fox watches her as well but keeps an eye out for the cleric, who walks up alongside Cao. They both stare into the vault at the many treasures within, but for Havik there is but one that he cares about. It floats on a pedestal, an artifact of swirling orange glass and obsidian lining, looking not unlike a whirlpool.

"At last," Havik says. "You chose wisely, Emperor. It would be a shame to have the blood of infants on your hands."

"Yes," Cao nods. "Instead... I'll settle for just yours!"

He brings up the Wrath Hammer at the last moment and slams it up into Havik's face, knocking him backwards. Skarlet is distracted by this, allowing Fox to kick her in the face and get some distance. Having already signalled behind his back to Sheeva to get to the children and make them safe from Havik's thralls, Fox now focuses all of his attention on the blood construct.

As Havik lands, Cao approaches him with his hammer. "You think you can threaten me? ME?! I'll split your skull!"

"You already have," Havik cackles, looking up. The lower half of his face has been torn off by the hammer, revealed bone beneath. The cleric's eyes burn as his body twists and contorts to a standing position. "Very foolish, Emperor! But I should have known!"

"And YOU should have known we didn't come alone," Fox says. "Even as we speak, Sheeva is making safe the children!"

"Sheeva?" Havik says. "But she hates her husband!"

"We're working through some things!" Cao swings and Havik's back snaps in half to dodge the blow; it soars right over his now-bent midsection. The cleric pops back up immediately, his torso spinning to deliver a backfist to Cao's head. Not wasting a beat, the cleric charges towards the open vault with the Kamidogu.

Fox, however, had anticipated this. Throwing out the weighted end of his chain, he trips Havik. Skarlet sees an opening and kicks up at him, but he blocks it with the other end of his chain. Cao turns around and attempts to bring his hammer down on Havik, but the cleric rolls away. When he gets back up, Cao has moved between him and vault.

"I see we'll have to do this the hard way then," Havik notes. "Good! I like the hard way!"

Cao shouts as he swings, knocking the dazed Havik to the side of the room where he impacts against a wall. He moves on after him, and Fox would join him were it not for Skarlet. Fully in Havik's thrall, the blood construct wails as she attacks him, fiercely crying while swinging her blades. Fox uses his sickle to block each strike, backing up and keeping a focus on his footing; one wrong step could open him up to a killing blow.

Skarlet performs a roundhouse, causing Fox to flip backwards. As he lands, she digs one of her longknives into her side, drawing much blood---which she collects and hurls at him in spherical projectile form!

Fox spreads out flat against the ground, kicking up some dust as the blood ball fies over him. With all four limbs he then pushes himself upwards, popping up into a crouching position from which he launches himself towards her. With his palm-claws he grabs onto her, twists and throws her off to the side, scraping her as he does. She rolls a few feet away from him.

Both he and Skarlet jump up at nearly the same moment, each sizing the other up. She throws a knife and he dodges; he responds with one of his own. They circle each other, throwing kunai blades until each has only one left. When they both throw their last, they collide mid-air and bounce apart from each other with a few small sparks.

Skarlet leaps at him, bringing up both feet. Fox grabs her legs and turns his entire body, swinging her with him before letting go and throwing her into the wall.

>>1683894

Reaching down to his belt, he takes his chain and spins the blunt end once before aiming it at her face. She moves her head just in time for it to smack against the wall, cracking it and loosening a brick. She takes that very brick and throws it at him, which he slices in half with his sickle.

Nearby, Fox and Havik continue to go at it. The cleric has produced a mace from somewhere, and uses it to clash with the thief's hammer. Cao, channeling the rage and fury of Shao Kahn, pounds away at Havik's defense. "Yes, yes! Feel the rage, the fury! Feel alive, my Emperor! You should be thanking me for shaking you out of your stupor. A little bit of chaos every now and then---or a LOT of it---can do a soul some good!"

Skarlet brings up a heel and steps on the chain, holding it in place. She uses her other foot to step further up on it and pull Fox towards her, where she spins and slashes him across the shoulder and arm with one of her knives. He grunts and steps back, feeling her sapping some of his strength with her strike.

"I will bathe in your blood," she says, taking her fingers and sliding it along the edge of her knife, sucking up his blood. "You still have much more left to give!"

Fox pulls back his chain but Skarlet teleports behind him, surprising him by appearing from the wall above him. He attempts to bring up his arms and block but she slices vertically downwards, leaving a stinging cut going down his forearms. When she lands, she sweeps his leg out from under him before kicking his chain away.

Before he can get back up she jumps on top of him, pinning him to the floor, and shoves her knife into his shoulder. Fox shouts as she smiles wickedly, her eyes glowing red. "Yes... I can feel your blood! Your pulse! Every beat of your heart! Soon it will all be mine!"

Fox struggles against her, but there is something more to what she is doing than merely stabbing him. There is a draining feeling, like his very will is dwindling, being sapped right into her knife with his blood. Somewhere, in the back of his head, he begins to hear a whisper; at first it is distant and indistinct, but then it grows louder. It is not her voice, but Havik's that he hears, and it whispers to him, 'Give in, Forrest. Lose yourself to the Blood Code. Become consumed by it! All there is and all that shall be will be found in the Blood Code!'

Closing his eyes, Fox lets out a gasp, which Skarlet believes may be his last breath. Her eyes go wide with glee, until both of his hands shoot up to grab her by the neck. At the same moment, he leans up and bites her hand, causing her grip on the knife to loosen.

'No!' he says to himself, over and over. 'No! I have not come this far for nothing! And no one, not even this bloody bitch, is going to stop me!'

Forcing her off of him, they get into a struggle which results in her bringing up a foot and kicking him back. He tears the knife out and throws it aside, then reaches his nearby kusarigama, managing to grasp it (albeit weakly). Skarlet shouts as she gets back up, having been denied her meal. She intends to finish the job, reaching for her other dagger.

At that moment, Cao knocks the mace wide out of Havik's hands before surging forward and knocking the cleric into the wall. Before he can recover, Cao does this again, smashing him even further into the stone. Skarlet's eyes suddenly go wide, turning from red to blue, and she falls backwards, right into the arms of Sheeva.

"Goodnight," the shokan says, before delivering a solid punch and knocking her out. The blood construct goes limp in her arms.

Havik falls to the floor, thoroughly beaten. Cao pants over him, then lifts up his hammer and prepares to bring it down, but Sheeva catches it by the throat. "Enough, it is done," she says. "He is beaten. Your children are safe. Killing him now denies us information."

"But it would feel very good right about now," he mutters through gritted teeth.

"Regardless, torture will yield just as satisfying results."

"Maybe and maybe not," Fox replies, gathering up his chain. "He might get off on it." He winces slightly at the bleeding wound in his shoulder.

"You are injured," Sheeva notes.

"I'll be fine," he insists, tearing off a piece of his uniform to form a bandage. As he wraps himself up, he looks up at the pair. "I hope this won't get awkward, seeing as how you just beat down someone looking to get that Kamidogu... but I'm going to need that Kamidogu."

Sheeva defers to Cao, who hefts his hammer over shoulder shoulder and shrugs. "Hey, like I said initially... You want it, take it."

"Emperor..." Sheeva mutters.

"What? He helped us. I'm a 'scratch my back and I get yours' kinda guy."

"I can assure you, you aren't making a mistake," Fox insists. He stands up and looks at them both. "I'd like to thank you for your help."

Sheeva shakes her head. "No... Thank you. Havik may have always gone on and on about chaos and change, but change can be a force for good. I would like to think that this experience has changed us for the better." She looks at Cao, who manages a feint smile.

Fox smirks. "Me too."

Fox looks down at the unconscious Havik. "Keep an eye on him, would you please? I've got at least four more of him to deal with, including the one from my world. I don't need him running around, mucking things up."

"Consider it done," Sheeva says, hoisting him up by the neck. "We promise not to be... too rough."

"I'll take your word," Fox replies. He approaches the vault and enters to retrieve the Kamidogu, leaving all the other treasures behind without a second thought. With the artifact in hand, and a final wave to Cao and Sheeva, he opens a portal back to the Nexus.

Raiden awaits him there, meditating near the first Chaosrealm Kamidogu he retrieved. The Thunder God floats slightly above the ground, but when Fox enters, he opens his eyes and steps onto the ground.

"Forrest, you have returned! I am pleased at your successes. With two of the six, we are well on our way to defeated the Haviks and their scheme."

"I hope so," he says, placing the Kamidogu upon the altar near its identical twin. He winces slightly from the pain in his shoulder. Raiden moves up and places a hand upon him; it glows white and Fox feels a warmth spreading through the area where the wound is. When Raiden removes his hand, he is healed. "Hey... Thanks, Raiden."

"It is far from the least I could do, but we must be careful. Do not let my healing capabilities cause you to be reckless in the hope that I can heal you upon your returns. I cannot revive a corpse."
