Commander Alana Tyrna's star destroyer division is in orbit high above Imperial Center, reduced in strength while they wait for a fresh Star Destroyer and its escorts from the Kuat Drive Yards to arrive. Once rendezvoused, they will proceed to Corellia and the fleet assembling there.

Meanwhile, a lone luxury shuttle rises from Coruscant under a tie fighter escort, headed straight for Retribution . . .

I allow between ten and twenty minutes for voting depending on the importance of the issue and how divided the vote is. If the vote is tied up, I usually allow an extra five minutes for a tie breaker, and if no one votes, I roll for the tie breaker (The will of the dark side).

I always try to incorporate (and encourage!) write ins if they don't violate the spirit of voted decisions, though I may edit or tweak them to fit better.

I also am always open for questions. I'll just ask that they stay relevant to current events in the quest, or at least the near future.

After a moment of stunned silence, you repeat the situation to your communications officer. "A High Priority message from Duchess Ederlathh Palipodes of Naboo?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"Requesting we take her to Byss?"

"Yes, ma'am." The bewilderment and amusement fighting from primacy in the Communications officer's tone are impossible to miss.

Ah. The promise you'd made. You weren't sure when Naval warships became yachts for the rich and powerful, but you also didn't know of a good way to say 'no' to a duchess, certainly not one you had promised to take to your family estate.

"Is she on the line?" You ask.

"No, ma'am. Her shuttle hailed us as it left Imperial Center's shield gate."

"Shuttle? She's on her way?"

"Yes, ma'am. She has the proper clearance codes to approach the division . . . Should I have her turn back?"

"No," you turn this situation over in your mind, "No, let her come aboard, Have her brought to my ready room, I'll meet with her there."

"Yes, ma'am."

"And contact the Admiral and determine what our instructions are, if we are free to carry out such an assignment."

"Right away, commander."

It was good Lord Mi had not been able to keep her appointed transfer to Retribution, you thought. It wouldn't look good pulling favors for nobles while on duty. The message you'd received from the Komissar's office had cited a redeployment to Corellia. You knew through scuttlebutt of the rebel raid that occurred there, and if a Dark Side Komissar was being sent in, heads were likely to roll. Thinking back to your own encounter with Brakiss during his investigation of your ship was . . . unpleasant.

Though you still weren't sure yet if you should be celebrating or kicking yourself for having made that offer to Duchess Palipodes on Kuat, you knew you had to act appropriately. She had been a bit distant on that world, so weren't sure if having her attention was a blessing or a curse, though you felt the interaction had ended on a good note.

Fortunately, Imperial Star Destroyers were infinitely more suited to hosting VIPs than even your old Victory-Class and it pays off when Ederlathh and her entourage file in to your office.

The first in you recognized right away as a Coruscant Guard, crimson plasteel armor reflecting bands of light from the overheads. You try not to let your surprise show, which is irrelevant because the guard hardly gives you a glance, surveying the room as he strides in like a predator on the move.

The others filed in behind him, a squad of Shocktroopers in red-marked armor, in their escort were Duchess Naboo, Ederlathh Palipodes herself and a "skeleton crew" of retainers. First to follow her is a handmaid, wearing a dark formal gown and black veil, her head reverently bowed, eyes avoiding yours as she shuffles in alongside her Duchess. Additionally, a polished black RA-7 protocol droid. The colloquial "Death Star droid", a common site in depots and garrisons across the empire. It was hardly surprising to see one accompanying a dignitary of Ederlathh's rank.

Ederlathh, her retainers and her escorts stand to one side while you are approached by the Courscant guardsmen.

(1/2)
>>
"Commander Tyrna?"

"Yes?"

"May I speak with you in private briefly before you speak with the Duchess."

It was more a command than a request. Puzzling to say the least, and it seemed to you to be a gross violation of normal protocol, but a glance at the Duchess revealed nothing aside from her normally pouty features.

"Of course."

The non-speaking guardsman and the shocktroopers remained in the ready room as the door cycled shut behind you.

"We're handing over Duchess Palipodes to your care now, though the shocktroopers will be accompanying her to Byss, they shouldn't be any trouble," the Guard says.

"Is the Duchess in any sort of danger?" you ask.

"No ma'am." He fails to elaborate further.

"I understand. Though I am still waiting on authorization from my higher ups to change my orders." You put a bit of command authority in your voice touched with just a hint of aristocratic arrogance. Enough to remind this trooper who is in charge.

The guard shifts slightly, you suspect he's smirking at you.

"The Duchess has received authorization from Moff Vollen to appropriate the use of your vessel. He feels it is 'befitting a lady of her position'."

A local Moff. That superseded anything Lobkin had planned. Though officially he could countermand a Moff's authority in a military situation, in practice that was tantamount to political suicide.

"She is not to leave the ship until you arrive in Byss, though her escorts may do as they please," The guard finishes.

You blink at the expressionless faceplate in front of you. While the uniformity of the foot soldiers of the empire looked wonderful on the parade ground, it made rank identification for someone not actively patched into the com network difficult. "I'm sorry . . ."

"Sergeant," the guard supplies.

"I'm sorry, sergeant, but I'm not sure I understand the hierarchy here. Who's in charge, you or her?"

The Sergeant considers your question for a moment before replying.

"The Emperor."

One name to end a discussion. That wasn't really a conversation path you wanted to explore very much. "Sergeant, you understand the inherent difficulty in a baroness giving orders to a duchess don't you?"

"Duchess Palipodes is under the command of the Emperor," the sergeant says, "As we all are. Now, we'll be returning to Imperial Center now," the guard says delivering a crisp salute before you can argue, "Safe travels."

He does not wait to be dismissed before leaving, though he must have radioed his comrade who suddenly emerges from the ready room door, following him out.

You watch the troopers leave, staring daggers at their backs. The nature of the situation prevented you from effectively retaliating against them without risking offending the wrong party. Letting go of your disdain you reenter the conference room with more questions than answers, and see that the group has segregated, Ederlathh, her handmaid and droid stand near your desk while the half dozen shocktroopers stand near the conference table.

"Alana," Ederlathh says, giving you a short nod of respect. She had looked much more in place on Kuat at the ball than she does on a star destroyer, especially since her appearance had hardly changed. She wears a dark, formal gown with a lace-up back and dark gray highlights, her hair is immaculately styled up, as is tradition among many higher ranking Imperial nobles. She is only a teenager, you believe she is fifteen or sixteen years old, but her attitude betrays confidence and authority well beyond her years.

"Good to see you again, Duchess," you reply, giving the young duchess a warm smile.

Ederlathh returns the smile, but drops it as she turns to the others in the room. "I'll call for you when I need you."

The handmaid and droid leave at once, the shocktroopers hesitating a moment, subtly looking to their leader before he straightens up and leads them out, door closing behind them, leaving you and Ederlathh alone.

"Thank you for coming to pick me up. I didn't want to have to use Moff Volen's orders if I didn't have to," Ederlathh says.

"It's no trouble, Duchess," you reply, making your way to your desk, "I'm happy to take you. Do you mind if I ask why you're going to Byss?"

"What, is it not worth visiting?" Ederlathh asks in perfect deadpan,

"I wouldn't say that," you chuckle, "Byss is just known for being . . . Tranquil," you say. "It's not the most interesting of places."

Ederlathh stares at you silently, head tilted as if she's listening to a soft sound. "It sounds perfect." she says. "Frankly, I'm tired of being kept under foot on Imperial Center. I happened to get wind that your new ship would be passing through, and I decided you were my ticket off."

"Of course, and in case you're wondering, the offer to visit my family estate still stands," you say. Although I''ll have to comm ahead to my mother and father to get things ready for a Duchess.

Ederlathh smiles back at you, clasping her hands in front of herself, "That sounds wonderful." her expression sours a moment later, "I do hope that my presence on your ship doesn't cause you any undue difficulty."

"Hardly," you say, "It doesn't offer much for accommodations-"

"I don't care about that," Ederlathh says dismissively, "I'm sure I'll make it work. "

"Good to hear," you cast a glance at the chronometer on your desk. "Now, I have to begin preparations for the journey to Byss. Jump miscalculations simply cannot happen in the Deep Core."

You catch a hint of excitement behind her eyes, the thrill of death, however remote.

"I'll have Lieutenant Bastra find housing for you and your accompaniment."

"I understand. Thank you Alana."

"Please, think nothing of it."

***

You weren't lying when you told Ederlathh that jumps to the Deep Core, Byss especially, were not trivial matters. You saw your navigator die a little behind his eyes when you told him the change in plans, though he made no complaints.

Bastra reported back after Ederlathh and her escort were settled. Fortunately Retribution has a VIP suite for just such occasions. If your XO found the situation strange, he made no comment about it, busying himself with readying the ship for the voyage, leaving Captain Sobieski in charge of the division in your absence.

It was going to be a long voyage, one complicated by a young Duchess.

There was so much to get done. Not just the duties of a good host, but the duties of a daughter, and officer of the empire. You needed to start prioritizing. Admiral Lobkin was as good a place to start as any.

"Duchess Palipodes?" he asked, incredulity obvious even over the unfathomable distance between you.

"Yes, I've made arrangements that Captain Sobieski will manage the division in my absence."

"Monarch is scheduled to arrive in just a few days," Lobkin protests.

"And Captain Tierce will have to wait for my return," you say. "I'm sorry admiral, but my hands are tied. I'm operating under the orders of Moff Vollen."

"Vollen," Lobkin says, a curse on his lips. "Fine, but you can't be playing governess to a Duchess forever. The fleet is deploying at Corellia and in the event of combat-"

"Admiral, I will do my best to return as soon as possible."

Lobkin quiets down, mind working behind his eyes. "Very well. Can't be helped. I look forward to your return, commander."

"Thank you, admiral."

Lobkin kills the transmission. You wouldn't have expected your absence to be such a worry to him, but you supposed he meant it seriously that he relied on you more than others. Well, he would have to learn to make due for the time being.

And now, since you were at the coms . . . You suppose you should call home and inform them of the situation. You knew it was incredibly unlikely your father would be home. His work kept him away most days. This meant, you would be speaking with your mother, Syrvana.

The hologram in your quarters resolves into your mother's face. Once it had been conventionally attractive, but that was decades ago. Now it was permanently creased with worry lines even the best plastic surgeons in the Empire had difficulty erasing. Her lip turned down into a frown.

"Alana? It's not like you to call home while you're . . . away."

Your mother would never use terms like "on duty" or "deployed", not with her daughter. On Denon, your mother's home world, women were expected to serve the home, not on the battlefield. It was a tradition she carried with her.

"I'm sorry, mother. I've been tied up, the navy keeps me busy."

She sniffs, "I'm sure it does."

You grit your teeth, "I am calling ahead to make you aware that I will be returning home shortly. In just a few days."

"I'll have your room prepared," she says.

"I won't be alone."

Your mother's eyes widen in surprise while her lip tightens, you take some small joy in your mother's fear that you've found a suitor among the bored, useless nobles in the officer corps. By your mother's thinking, warfare was for knuckle-dragging brutes. Money-making was the purview of true gentlemen. No surprise for the daughter of a prominent mining clan.

"Duchess Palipodes of Naboo will be accompanying me."

You didn't think it was possible for her eyes to widen further. "Duchess Palipodes?"

"A close personal friend of mine," you say with feigned humility. "She will be staying with us at the estate for a short while. I expect we can accommodate her."

"I'll call your father," she says. "He'll want to know about this right away."

You grimaced at the idea of your father's work being interrupted, but you supposed it was necessary.

"Why is she coming here, Alana?" you mother asks, "What have you told her?"

"I told her I know what it's like to be a noblewoman and a teenager, I know what it's like to be bored out of my mind."

Syrvana narrows her eyes at you, "Do I need to remind you what will happen if you bring disgrace upon this family? Do I need to remind you how much we owe to the Emperor?"

"No." You cross your arms.

"Every time it's something new with you, Alana. First your wildness as a teenager, then the academy, now you're corrupting the Emperor's niece." Your mother shakes her head as she delivers the same speech you've heard thousands of times, a list that can do nothing but grow longer. "Why can't you find someone to settle with? Make something of what we've been granted?"

"I said I've found somebody I'm interested in, Mother. Not that they are mine yet."

Your mother purses her lips at you, brow furrowed, "Some laser-brained hotshot officer no doubt," she says, "I know you're type, Alana. I saw the sort of people you were with when you were younger. When you were at the Academy."

"People grow up," you reply, "Not that my choices are subject to your review. Right now the Empire needs every man and women on the front. I doubt money can protect a home from orbital bombardment, mom."

"Those people at the Academy, the sort of people who belong at the Academy, are there for that reason. They certainly don't need you, Alana."

"You care so much about my 'interests' in others," you retort, "But you want me to stay at home like you. Well I can tell you they aren't someone I can win over by resigning my commission to be a lady of the Court."

"Enough," your mother holds up a hand, taking a deep breath, "I don't need you fighting with me, Alana. Not on top of everything else."

You fought against rolling your eyes. Of course your mother would become a martyr. "Please just make sure everything is ready for our arrival."

Your mother's eyes go wide again, "It's not the Duchess is it!?"

You kill the channel. Let her sweat, why not? Not like she could say anything if it were the Duchess. You just hoped that networking with Duchess Palipodes would make up for antagonizing your mother in your father's eyes. The messy work of talking with your mother done, you head for the bridge to review the jump calculations.

Retribution burst from hyperspace near Empress Teta, the glittering city lights on the night side of the Encumenopolis easily visible even at long range. All around it the flickering lights of sublight drives pushing ships to and from the planet.

Empress Teta was the gateway to the Byss Run, and it was the last world before things got . . . Interesting.

You had a steward take your dinner invitation to the Duchess, who you had not seen hide nor hair of since beginning this journey. You spoke with the steward who reported the Shocktroopers in place at the door, who took the invitation in. If anything, Palpatine and his family were secretive. During the first stretch of his reign this was spurred by rumors of grievous scarring caused by the Jedi Rebellion. But now that he was miraculously resurrected, you imagined he was busy building the Empire.

Ederlathh was an enigma. Clearly a lonely young girl with the weight of a galaxy on her shoulders. Maybe you could do a bit to alleviate that strain.

You'd made sure to close off one of the armories and a target range specifically for the occasion. Nothing relieved stress like vaping the hell out of holotargets. You were a pretty poor shot yourself, but you certainly got enjoyment out of it. No reason to let the stormtroopers have all the fun.

Before dinner and shooting however, you wanted to speak with the captain of Ederlathh's guard detail. They were another small part of the larger mystery here and you decided it would be best to try to get a piece of the story directly from them. Discreetly of course, there was no reason to leave Ederlathh feeling as though you were interrogating her escort.

Ah! Perfect.

You'd arranged the meeting through Lieutenant Bastra and made sure the invitation extended was suitably casual, though a clever officer would know your intentions. Of course, with infantry officers, it was a tossup if they possessed even an ounce of cleverness.

"Commander Tyrna," the Shocktrooper says, rising to his feet from the holotable he sat at in one of the few and small catinas aboard Retribution. It was an "off-duty" area, so he held his helmet in his hands, his hair plastered to his forehead with sweat. "Good to meet you."

Seeing a stormtrooper without his helmet was like seeing a Nexu without fur, you think.

"Sergeant Penbac," he says with a casual grin, extending his hand for a shake. "Sorry, a salute's probably better." he salutes instead.

Cleverness seems out of the question for this one. He's young for a sergeant and his accent speaks of an agriworld more than the press of a city.

"Why don't we have a seat," you suggest.

"Seat, sure. Right here," he indicates a table nearby and the two of you sit.

"Where are you from, Sergeant?" you ask, trying to ease into the discussion.

"Real close to here actually, Ruan. I did my training on Empress Teta though, I hear we just passed by.

Ask about it subtly, though. Lead in with something like:

Depending on his answer steer the discussion towards why he's guarding the duchess now and why she is heading to Byss.

"They must have done a pretty good job training you if you've been assigned to protect the Duchess. How'd you come to be a part of her guard?"

"Just lucky I guess," Penbacc says with a sheepish grin, "We're supposed to be keeping an eye on her."

You blink, "What do you mean 'keeping an eye on her'?"

Penbacc's smile slowly fades to neutrality, his hands flat on the table. "I." he blinks a few times. "I mean as her guard detail. We were selected from among Coruscant's security personnel."

"And do-" you start.

"I have top scores in marksmanship for my company and passed advanced recon and survival on Prakith," Penbacc tramples all over your words.

You give him a long pause to ensure he's done talking. "And do you know why she's going to Byss?"

Another long pause while Penbacc stares at you. "I understand that she's tired of being cooped up on Imperial Center."

"Are you keeping something from me, Sergeant?" you ask. You see uncertainty, and perhaps some fear flash across his boyish features and decide to double down, "As commander of this ship and the ranking officer here, I need to know the facts."

Penbacc's jaw trembles, his eyes wide then, he squeezes them shut, when he opens them again, his face relaxes and his smile returns. "No reason to worry, Commander," he chuckles, "I'm not keeping anything from you. I think . . . " he looks up at the ceiling like he is struggling to remember something. "I think you're worrying too much." he shakes his head, "I know all this seems strange, but I promise . . . I just want to do my job."

You open your mouth.

"The best I can." he finishes.

"Sergeant," you place your palm on the table, trying not to lose your patience. "I understand you want to do your job-"

"It's crucial," he says.

"Crucial?"

"My job," he replies.

"You're not making this easy, Sergeant," you say, your voice low. "In fact, it seems like you're trying to obscure the truth."

Penbacc frowns, "No. That's not it at all. The truth is, I'm not hiding anything because there's nothing to hide."

"Well, you're certainly not acting that way."

Penbacc stands up, "I'm sorry Commander. I- my whole team, we've been under a lot of stress. The Duchess requires round the clock supervision and there's only a few of us. It was easier when the Coruscant Guards were around too. Things will be better when we reach Byss."

"What are you watching for?"

"The Duchess has enemies," he says, "The rebels, for one, would love to get their paws on her. I'm sure some of the Warlords, or heck, even Thrawn wouldn't mind a relative of Palpatine to give their claim some legitimacy. That's not even touching her rivals and crazy suitors." His expression relaxes again to be carefree, "So like I said, my guys, we're on it. Okay? Ma'am?"

There must be something in the water on Imperial Center that made Stormtroopers forget their military professionalism, but once again, since Penbacc was outside your chain of command, you weren't sure who you risked upsetting by reprimanding him.

"Just ensure the Duchess stays safe from whatever it is you're worried about."

"Absolutely," he says. "We'll keep an eye on her."

Yeah...

This entire thing sounds fishy to me.

Have our XO run the service numbers of these troopers in the Imperial database.

Also, double up the storm trooper patrols in the areas around her quarters and ensure that these shocktroopers have an escort when they leave their section. All part of our 'increased security measures'

"And I want stormtrooper patrols around the VIP suite and the Shocktroopers quarters doubled," you instruct the nearby Stormtrooper officer as you adjust the hip holster you had buckled on earlier. It didn't seem your style, more akin to a flashy smuggler than an officer and lady of the Empire but . . . Something about Sergeant Penbacc had grabbed you the wrong way. It felt dramatic, but the word was 'suspicious'.

"Yes, ma'am."

"Commander," Bastra approaches with a datapad. "I've finished running the service numbers of Penbacc and his men."

"And?"

"And, it's unremarkable," Bastra says, his face blank. "They don't stand out in any way. Completely average. Come from a variety of garrison duties, transferred to Coruscant, tested into the Shocktroopers with middling scores."

You take the extended datapad and scroll through their service record while Bastra talks. "Where are their commendations?"

"It's all there, ma'am."

"How?" you studied the record again, Sergeant Penbacc's record. "Penbacc told me he passed Advanced Recon and Survival on Prakith."

Bastra looks surprised, "That's not listed anywhere."

That was decidedly odd, you could think of no reason, save shortsighted bragging, why Penbacc would lie about that.

"Who was it that assigned these troopers to the Duchess?" You ask.

"The records we have aren't clear on that," Bastra replies, "I can query the central holonet databanks."

>>
>>1738195
It's possible the Duchess could be working with Thrawn, although I'm skeptical. The real question is why aren't the soldiers in the escort acting professionally at all. A storm trooper should know better than to blatantly lie to a division commander aboard her own Star Destroyer. I would suspect that if they were rebel spies who had infiltrated the Duchesses inner circle they would be competent enough to not arouse suspicion this easily. They may be personal companions of the Duchess she had someone alter the records for (which would explain the relatively haphazard nature of their deception), but that poses even more questions...
>>
>>1738220
True, but telling a Kommissar we have suspicions about the loyalty of people near a VIP would almost oblige the Kommissar to investigate or be negligent in their duty.
>>
>>1738221
The anwser is on Byss. She or someone else wants to find something in Byss and besides our father i can think only in Palpy's clone lab. Although one would bear to question how she found out about that. Anyway... the only thing we can do is keep a eye on then and see what we find. And you must notice the duchess is mostly limited to her quarters but her conhorts are free to walk around. I don't like that one bit.

"Find out," you say briskly.

"Right away ma'am. It will take some time to get a response back from Imperial Center though, especially if these orders follow unofficial channels," Bastra says.

Right, sort of like the mission you were on now. Favors and protocol and under the table work.

"Do what you can. I'm meeting the Duchess for some target practice," You say.

Bastra raises an eyebrow, "Teenagers and guns, ma'am?"

"She'll be supervised. Might do her some good, blow off some steam."

"Yes, ma'am."

Behind him, the starfield explodes into the chaos of hyperspace as Retribution dives deeper into the volatile core of the galaxy.

***

The shooting range had been completely cleared save yourself, Ederlathh and a sole armorer, unreadable in his armor. You'd requisitioned two SE-14 pistols and two E-11 carbines which sat, black and polished, upon a table by the range.

"Ive never shot a blaster before," Ederlathh says as the two of you approach the table.

"You'll get the hang of it quickly, I think," you say. "I'm rubbish at it, but it can be fun."

The Duchess looked over the assortment of weapons on the table in wonder, "What's first?"

You'd first learned to shoot in the academy with an E-11 so you indicated the carbine.

"These weapons are live," the armorer says as you pick it up.

Just as your own training began, you first review basic firearms safety, the three rules. "Only point at something you intend to kill. Never touch the trigger until you're ready to kill. And no matter what anyone says, every blaster is live and ready to kill."

Ederlathh pays a surprising amount of attention based on what you knew about her. Handling deadly weapons could often have that effect on people though.

You pop out the power pack, point the weapon downrange and stroke the trigger.

Click.

"Here," you hand the weapon to Ederlathh.

It was an amusing sight. You supposed given her status and background she couldn't help but overdress for every occasion. A girl in makeup and an elaborate dress holding a blaster rifle. You were also impressed that between one teenager and a single handmaid they could manage her appearance so immaculately. It would have been nice to have that sort of skill when you were here age, or maybe even now. As it was, you couldn’t afford to spend much time on your looks.

"Is that weapon live?" You ask.

Ederlathh puzzles at it a moment. "You just took out the power pack."

You make no reply.

"But you said every weapon is ready to kill."

"Correct," you carefully take the weapon back, "Even if you think you know otherwise, every weapon is deadly." You replace the power pack.

(1/2)
>>
"So, what do you want to shoot?" You ask. The range had a full holosuite for rendering virtually any target imaginable. "Rancors? Battle droids? Acklays-"

"Rebels." The answer comes quickly and with a flash of anger behind her eyes.

You give Ederlathh a nod and turn to the armorer, "I'm sure someone has programmed in a Rebel setting"

"Yes, ma'am." The trooper steps to a control console near the shooting range and after a few commands, the holograms spring to life. You see a motley collection of humans and aliens appear on the range, wearing assorted gear and military surplus with them, a few with the iconic swept-back helmets of Alderanian security. Nearest to you, a virtual Bothan sneers in your direction while his human compatriot gives you a rude gesture.

You give the armorer a bemused look, "How charming."

"How do we kill them?" Ederlathh asks, raising the weapon to awkwardly look down the sights.

"The key," you explain, "Is to relax, not rush anything and take your time. In combat you miss most shots because you're excited, or angry, or scared."

"I got it." Ederlathh interrupts you to fix her aim on the Bothan.

"When you're ready, gently squeeze the trigger."

A crimson bolt of light leaps from the blaster and sails clear over the Bothan's head to burn a pit in the back splash further down range.

"Sithspawn!" Ederlathh says, closing her off-eye and adjusting her aim.

Her second shot hits the Bothan in the thigh, spinning him and dropping him to a knee even as the bolt really passed clean through the hologram. Her third hits his chest and knocks him flat to his back. The hologram disappears to be replaced by a voracious Wookiee with a necklace of human ears and teeth.

At only 20 meters it wasn't the most impressive feat, but Ederlathh seemed quite pleased with herself. Once you were confident she'd gotten the hang of things, you joined her at the firing line. Rebels dropped under the sustained barrage of fire. Bith, Duros, Humans, Neimoidians, Mon Calamari. The targets were progressively farther away and sometimes appearing behind cover.

Empty power packs began to pile up, sometimes faster than the Armorer could take them for recharge.

After a few near misses ended with a bulls eye on a Rodian in a camouflage parka, Ederlathh lowers her rifle, expression clouded.

You set your rifle down on the table and turn to her, "What's the matter?"

"I hate the Rebellion," she says.

"That hate motivates us," you say. "Gives us focus."

Ederlathh gives a weak smile, "I suppose that's true. I'm just so tired of hating, Alana. If I had the power I would end this war myself.

"That's what we aim to do," you say.

Ederlathh shakes her head, "I know that. But that won't be quick, will it? The Clone wars only lasted three years. This war has been going on almost since I was born," she says "To you, it's an aberration. Something to be rectified. To me, it's my life. I never knew an Empire that wasn't beset with rebellion.

You think of how many conscripts this must be true of. The war really escalated just over a decade ago with the destruction of the Death Star, but even before then the Rebellion had been a thorn in the side of the Empire. How many conscripts on your ship or in your division didn't truly know of an Empire free from violence?

"Why do the Rebels even want to tear the Empire apart? Is it really worth it?"

You hadn't planned on getting political with her, but you knew the answer. "No."

"I've heard the Rebels say they fight for their homes and families. You don't, do you?"

"No."

She cocks her head like she's listening to a sound too faint for your ears. "You fight for order. You fight for peace. Bigger things. Imperial things, not petty individual concerns. But I don’t think we'll ever have those things with a Sith in charge."

You don't let your alarm show, but Ederlathh's musings had veered into dangerous territory. The Emperor's force sensitivity was one of those few "black topics" in the Empire. It was not secret, yet it was.

You signal the armorer with your eyes to leave and, to his credit, he does so with no fuss.

You had learned in school that the Sith rebelled in secret against the manipulative and selfish Jedi, but . . . You had also seen that power corrupt. You thought of Brakiss torturing Tierce on the whim of some petty bureaucrat, or of the contents of your desk, swept to the floor with hardly a thought.

Guys, do not call a force sensitive blood relative of the emperor (and far more powerful than our own family) a traitor to her face. It's possible she may be testing our loyalty to the Empire, but it's more likely this young duchess is telling the truth. You stand your ground, voice level and calm. "This is no way for a Duchess to behave."

Ederlathh's eyes are like caged animals, spitting fury at you. She opens her mouth to say more, but closes it with a snap.

"You can't let your emotions dictate your actions."

Slowly, she relaxes, letting out her breath in one big exhale. "Fine."

"I don't think you're a traitor. I think you're one of my friends, Ederlathh" you say. "If I thought you were a traitor, I wouldn't have sent that trooper away. I think that you're just under a lot of pressure."

Ederlathh nods, clearly not trusting herself to speak, with emotions raging through her. After a few seconds she swallows, "I'm sorry. For my behavior."

"There's nothing to apologize for."

"No, I should have learned to control my anger better. It's something I have to work on."

You give her a smile, "Well I don't bear you any ill-will. Are you still up for dinner?"

Ederlathh takes a deep breath, "Yes."

"Perfect. It's not far."

***

The suite the two of you enter had been specially prepared for your dinner and was nearly identical to the room you'd first met Lobkin in, complete with the virtual view of space behind the table, this one showing the swirling azure vortex of hyperspace.

It was somewhat impressive to you, but Ederlathh barely reacted, nothing special to a Duchess.

The steward who led you in took your orders, a Nerf steak for yourself and a seafood dish you weren't familiar with for Ederlathh, perhaps something native to Naboo. The Steward gave no sign he wouldn't be able to fulfill her order.

The Duchess is quiet and avoids your gaze, you suspect she's embarrassed by her outburst earlier and it might be best to try to talk about something else.

"Did you ever get that sword?"

"What?" Ederlathh looks confused.

"When we met, you said you liked my sword, but were getting your own."

"Oh. Yes," she says. "I've developed something of a hobby for fencing," she smiles, "You should try me some time."

Despite carrying a sword for ceremonial purposes, you don't think you could do anything but hurt yourself with one. "Something you carried over from Naboo?" you ask.

"No," Ederlathh looks distant, "Naboo was a peaceful planet, they didn't much approve of weapons or fighting."

"Tell me about Naboo," you say.

"Naboo?" Ederlathh asks, "It's been so long since I was there." she picks at her fingernail, "It fell when I was a kid, when the Emperor died and news spread, before any one took control. Naboo declared itself independent and joined the Rebellion. I was smuggled off the planet by some loyalists. There were threats and things. Stuff I didn't understand."

She sighs.

"If you were an admiral I'd ask you to retake Naboo. I know the Emperor doesn't care about it anymore, but it was my home and I find myself missing it a lot. Imperial Center is nice . . ."

"But it's not home," you supply.

"Yes, exactly!" Ederlathh nods, "What I remember most about the Naboo was the weather, even when it was hot and muggy, it was beautiful. I used to play in the fields when I was a girl. I didn't have many friends back then." She pauses. "I guess I still don't."

"It can be tough to meet people when you live your life separate from others," you say.

"It's also tough being the grandniece of the Emperor when everyone on the planet hates him," her voice carries an acid tone, though you weren't sure if it were directed at Palpatine or the Naboo.

"I hate to say it, but Naboo is a long ways out still," you say. "But I don't think, the Emperor doesn't care about it. It's his home as well."

Ederlathh shrugs.

>>
"I have to ask," you say, "Those troops you're with. The shocktroopers. They're a little odd do you think?"

"Hmm?" Ederlathh looks distracted. "Oh my 'escort'? They're Imperial Intelligence."

Your blood froze. Imperial Intelligence shadowing the Duchess made a great deal of sense. It didn't explain their bizarre behavior, but it also meant you were now in the awkward position of digging deep into the backgrounds of Imperial Agents on clandestine assignment on your ship.

"Intelligence?" You ask, "Why, are you certain?"

"Yeah," Ederlatth says, "I've been around them long enough. As for why, you'd have to ask Madame Isard. Not everyone in the Empire likes me as much as you do. They're harmless though, don't worry about them. They suit my purposes."

Imperial Agents operating on naval vessels was nothing new. Any flag rank officer could expect at least a few moles among their crew or staff, usually the least conspicuous and least technically competent among them. It wouldn't do getting alarmed about them, though now you wish you had just asked Ederlathh before launching your investigation.

Before you can continue that line of conversation, dinner arrives, piping hot and smelling delicious. For a few minutes the two of you enjoy your meals in silence.

"So, Alana," Ederlathh asks after finishing a bit of her meal, "Last time we spoke you asked me about 'cute boys' and told me you'd been proposed to by Bin Luar. Did anything come of that?" her lip curls as she asks the question.

"No," you smirk, forcing your concerns about spies on your ship away. "I had to turn him down and I haven't heard from him since."

"So tell me, I'll ask you the same question. Any cute boys in the navy?"

Internally, you're laughing. Everyone is suddenly fixated on your love life. It seems like a woman can't be an officer without expectations of romantic (or not so romantic) entanglements.

I loved that duel it goes to show that the first time Obiwan and Vader meet in the death star the reason why they aren't spinning around like a couple of well spinners is because they know that one wrong move one will kill the other. It also shows how strong Obi became and how he grew. Also Maul last line saying that Luke will avenge what the emperor had done to them, possibly refering to him and his brother as well as to the jedi order.
>>

"Well, it's not just Lobkin," you say. "There are so many to choose from. Plenty of cute girls too."

Ederlathh is clearly caught off guard and gives you a genuine laugh. "You're terrible Alana. Do your soldiers know how bad you are?"

"No, I have to be professional around them."

"But not around me?" Ederlathh asks.

"I have more leeway around you."

"Not that much leeway," she retorts with a knowing look and takes a sip.

"So Lobkin is your pleasure craft, huh?" the Duchess asks. "Are you two uhh . . . "

"No," you say, chuckling, "No not yet. Besides, relationships like that aren't really proper in the navy."

"Who said it had to be a relationship," Ederlathh says.

"Nothing like that has happened either," you reply.

"Hmm," the Duchess continues eating. "Any plans on getting with him?"

"Well," you say, "Lobkin isn't my only target." You look up from your plate giving Ederlathh a coy glance.

The Duchess smirks, "Really, Alana? Targets of opportunity? You know I'm half your age, right?"

You hold up your hands, "I didn't say I was talking about you, Duchess, though I'm flattered you think I'm up for it. I was actually thinking about my old XO, a man named Tierce."

"Hmm." Ederlathh crosses her legs and takes another sip of her drink. "I'm sure."

You felt . . . Something. Attraction? Amusement? You couldn't be sure. It was somewhat disconcerting to you that Ederlathh's apparent self-control and competence seemed to fluctuate. It was making you think that possibly her lapses in judgement were calculated decisions. That, or she was just extremely accustomed to getting what she wanted.

"This Tierce, he's also interesting to you?" Ederlathh asks.

"Cute, yes. Loyal too."

"I've had dogs that were cute and loyal," Ederlathh says disparagingly, "Doesn't mean I want to be with them."

"Okay then, what sort of people are you attracted to?" you ask. "You're a duchess and a young woman, these sorts of decisions are going to be very important both personally and politically."

She sighs, "Oh I know. But most men are so boring. Everyone wants to bow and scrape or get something from me. A favor, a word in the right ear. Audience with the Emperor. I told you the Hapans tried to proposition me. They tried to pawn me off on some prince, probably about your age, Alana. How dull."

"Well what are you looking for?" you ask.

"Power interests me," she says.

"And a prince doesn't have power?"

"Not a Hapan prince," Ederlathh says, like everyone should be fully aware of this, "I don't want to be married to a man whose mother pulls the strings."

"Well I'm sure the you can find someone in the Empire who fits your criteria."

"I'm sure I can," she replies, "but so many of them are just bureaucrats. They follow orders, they live to serve. Not many are . . . Bold." She looks distant for a moment.

"It was one of the first settlements on Byss," you say, leaning back and interlacing your fingers to rest on your lap. "My family was in charge of a lot of the security around it. The first merchant groups operated out of there but eventually they shifted operations to the Imperial Control Sector. A lot of those big merchant collectives owe favors to my father, and he's responsible for many of the trade deals in place on Byss."

"Now he's, the Minister of Alien Labor?" Ederlathh asks.

You nod, "A lot of non-human prisoners were used in the construction efforts on Byss. My father had a way of utilizing them that made him noteworthy."

"You don't sound pleased about it," Ederlathh says, "You sound like you're reciting a history lesson."

"It's my home," you say, "I grew up there, before the Academy. It never was enough for me though. I felt like I needed more."

The Duchess nods, her meal finished. "I know what you mean. Wanting more."

"Well, maybe the navy is the career path for you," You suggest, "With your position, promotion would be easy, a spot in the Academy guaranteed."

"So just generally being weird? They do that. But they didn't say anything?"

"Have you heard them say anything weird?" you ask.

Ederlathh shrugs, "They don’t talk to me really. Not their place I guess."

"I was thinking," you say, pulling the conversation back, "about your career. Why not become a bureaucrat? The highest-up ones get essentially free-rein."

"Bureaucracy doesn't interest me," she says, almost looking annoyed. "Too many rules. Too much red tape. Even your father or Director Isard have limits."

Ederlathh can't help but smile as she shakes her head, "You are persistent, aren't you?"

You give a simple shrug. "To answer your question: I don't think it would change anything as I still wish to be your friend. Even if, hypothetically you were in Intelligence. Thought it would mean you've got more going on than just a visit to scenic Byss."

The Steward returns to collect your empty dishes. You are both silent while he works.

"Well, I don't think I could stand working under Iceheart anyway," Ederlathh says. "But it's fun to imagine. I'm excited about reaching Byss with you, Alana. I think it will be . . . interesting" She says.

"Thank you, Duchess."

"Ederlathh," she says. "You've earned that much I think."

"Thank you."

She stares into your eyes for a few moments, saying nothing.

It feels a little strange being around her. You feel less constrained and more open than you have with others. It's unusual for a number of reasons, primarily that you'd never been with a girl before. Sure, you'd given it thought but it simply hadn't ever happened, now for you to be flirting with a Duchess, who by her own admission is half your age. Normally you would never consider such a thing.

There was no question, Ederlathh was attractive to you. She was young, beautiful and energetic. You watch the way she crosses and uncrosses her legs while you talk with her. Beyond that, you might have feelings for her, though that would be much more complicated to act on than the lust you feel.

Although even that was likely impossible given your mutual stations. Things rarely occurred in the Empire without someone finding out.

"Alana?"

"Sorry," you say, "I was distracted."

"I'm sure," she shakes her head again, bemused.

"Well, It's getting late and I think we should call it a day," you say. "We'll be travelling through the Byss security Corridor and that will likely require my full attention, so I hope you can occupy myself."

Ederlathh almost visibly transitions back to her more aloof and aristocratic self, "Very well. Thank you, Alana."

Question for players (especially lurkers) how sickened are you with this sudden t/u/rn of events?

And how's the "Slice of life" shit grab you? I know this was requested so I am trying to branch out a bit, export more on Byss. Provided nothing bad happens . . .

L-lewd.

Thanks for running TK.

It's w/u/nderbar!

>>1739007
>So there's no real point to them anymore?
They serve an administrative function of keeping the local Moffs in line, stop them from getting too much individuality and independence.

>Do they have the Emperor's Ear at least?
To a degree. They do as much as any other high-level Bureaucrats. They are no Thrawn or Tarkin.

>Who would it be best to go to to McCarthy Ederlathh?
To expose/counteract a Duchess? Either Imperial Intelligence, the Komissari, or maybe the Naval Board. Maybe even Zahn.

Ederlathh has almost no official power in the Empire, but lots of privilege.

Seriously guys? Could there be anything more stereotypical than going gay mode as a female imperial officer in a quest?
>>1739010
>Question for players (especially lurkers) how sickened are you with this sudden t/u/rn of events?
Lurker here. This is the Empire right? Why are we not doing empire stuff like blowing the fuck out of mon calamari, or backstabbing our way to the top and winning the war instead of dating a barely space legal space-teenager. It might as well be a rebellion quest at that point.

Atleast you could be a proper imperial and use a twi'lek slave to slake your degenerate needs. Certainly, that would be more respectable in the Empire. Okey, rant over. Christ, when are we going to war already

TK, whose got that blob of previously imperial remnant space north of sullust, that includes fondor? Octavian grant? Various others?
>>
>>1739502
Well I wanted to go with the Empress for those sweet political favors. Also, we did just get done with a space campaign that took probably like two threads to complete, so TK usually gives us some R&R between.
>>
>>1739502
>more stereotypical than going gay mode as a female imperial office
I lold. Downside to giving people what they want when they want it: Sometimes they choose chocolate cake for breakfast
other times it's a 16 year old Duchess

>blowing the fuck out of mon calamari
Too far away, but it's on a list! One of the primary targets for Shadow Hand

>dating a barely space legal space-teenager
Top kek

>Twi'lek slave girl
Stop, you'll give them ideas!

>Remnant blob
I don't have my records with me, but I believe That's split over two different Warlords. If I recall, Delvardus has Eriadu-Sullust region and another has Fondor-Yag'Dhul but I could be mistaken. That area is primarily under the Eriadu Authority which, after Harssk's death at Coruscant is the most powerful of the independent warlords. Not much is known, though Isard was assigned to get more information and get them on your side.

>>1739506
Yes, exactly. The Yevetha conquest dragged on more than I expected and I wanted to mix it up. Some players were asking for some more "regular life" stuff to get a taste for what Alana's day-to-day is like.
>>
>>1739574
In this case, mon calamari referred to the species and not the planet. Now if my memory holds up, I'm actually a bit surprised that we havn't encountered any mon cal cruiser, mostly rebel assault frigates being the core of the rebel fleets encountered. And yeah, I was referring to the Fondor eish to yaghdul bit. It almost fits Harrsks Zero command in the EU, but he was the warlord of corellia in this timeline and died ages ago. It clicked in my memory that in the old canon Octavian Grant retires home to Tapani sector and stays out of the fighting, so I thought it might make sense if he was in charge over there, based out of tapani space. Maybe even calling himself Tapani Emperor. Oh well, we'll find out.
>>
>>1739882
>mon calamari referred to the species and not the planet
Oh I see

>havn't encountered any mon cal cruiser
Something to keep in mind, Alana has fought only "B-grade" forces of the Alliance. Peripheral battles and skirmishes.

At Kuat the rebels fielded Mon Cal Cruisers, captured Star Destroyers, the works.

Alana previously only commanded an escort group or a beefed up picket force, now she's got a division of ships-of-the-line and can be expected to go toe-to-toe with heavy hitters.
>>
>>1739882
The planet itself is Dac.

>>1739974
The MC80's are the heaviest ships the Rebel's are producing at this point, right? I know they have ISDs and Bulwark III's in service, but the Viscount should be ~10 years out.
>>
>>1740086
And it seems like they have a handful of Nebula-classes and Endurance-classes.

The former we should never engage with an Imperial I.
>>
>>1740086
The planet is called Dac, but also mon calamari, or Mon Cala, but the quarren get all huffy if you call it that. Regardless, there is room for TK's confusion.
Who can say what is going on in this timeline, from the looks of it a lot more Super star destroyers are still in use than there should be, so the rebels might speed up the Viscount in answer.
>>
>>1740160
>from the looks of it a lot more Super star destroyers are still in use than there should be
TK has said that there are a lot less. There's only one Eclipse/Tarkin, there are no Sovereign-class or Vengeance-class SSDs, and I don't think he's said anything about the Assertor-class.
>>
>>1740086
>The MC80's are the heaviest ships the Rebel's are producing at this point, right?

A new class of Mon Cal warships were spotted being constructed over Dac by Darth Cythera, designation unknown. It's also unknown how many (if any) are in service.

>>1740160
>The planet is called Dac
I'm aware, I've referred to it as such before. But BACK IN MY DAY it was just Mon Calamari. *shrug*. I thought YOU were mistakenly referring to the planet lol. Just a miscommunication.

>>1740160
>>1740284

>New Rebel ship classes
It's possible, very little is know militarily about the Rebellion at this point, they've been pretty quiet since their defeat at Kuat, and before that information was slim. The warlords and Remnants avoided fighting them when possible for the most part.

>SSD Numbers
That's a tricky question comapring it to the EU cause the EU is a big jumbled mess. But yes, in this timeline SSDs are more rare.

In EU SSDs cover a WIDE range from "Crazy secret super weapons" like EU Eclipse, to "This is slightly larger than an ISD" like Bellator or Allegiance. For the most part, I'm trying to remain accurate with the number of Executor-Class SSDs, but I know I'll miss a few.

Biggest issue is balancing. If I gave your Dark Empire 24 SSDs, no one would stance a chance. I want them to be more special than that. You've got Intimidator and Tarkin, and Tarkin's 2 escorts. That's a fearsome collection of firepower.
>>
>>1740366
>That's a fearsome collection of firepower.
Not fearsome enough for the Empire. Who controls the territory between us and the Maw? And whereabouts is Hutt Space in this whole mess?
>>
>>1740366
>24 SSDs

Fucking hell that is trully superior firepower. Why the empire didn't build more of those instead of the Death Star? I bet the DS could build more 24 SSDs
>>
>>1740372
>Hutt Space

have they solved the power gape lefted after Jabba's death?
>>
>>1740284
Hmmm. There was the guardian class super star destroyer, we destroyed it via force storm above Coruscant. That one would have been out of operations in some shit hole in the outer rim under Drommel as opposed to being controlled by Harssk, out of Corellia, at this point in the legends timeline.
We started with three SSD's, as you said, two allegiance, one tarkin, which is not quite the size of an eclipse but something inbetween.
The yevetha had another three captured, just as legends, one executor and two allegiance class. We captured another one of those, the Intimidator. Memory fuzzy on if we got more.
Zsinj is around, and I have to assume he has his SSD, whose name I forget. Razors kiss? And Thrawn is allied with Ardus Kaine, and again, I assume has access to Kaine's SSD, the Reaper. In the normal timeline Zsinj and his SSD would be dead, but he isn't dead, so he's probably got it, depending on what way TK leans.
At the moment Palpatine woke up, there would be Seven SSD’s in action, another two if Zsinj and Kaine’s SSD still exist. Add Lusankya to the list since it is hinted to be dormant on Coruscant by TK earlier. I’d say just seven is still a pretty high number for 10-11 ABY, if you take away the crazy high amounts of ships added in the dark empire comic, it is more than would be around in this normal period. And since Salverdus is the guy who built his own SSD in legends (albeit in the deep core), and has been stated a few times to be the most powerful warlord beside Zsinj/Thrawn, it's not completely unbelievable for there to be another in construction in Eriadu (or for that matter, another one being built in Fondor by whoever controls). Ofcourse, I just remembererd, Harssk had the materials drawn up for the construction of another Executor SSD in Kuat, whose materials we used to make a normal combat fleet instead. So, all in all, I’d say the state of the SSD’s is pretty good/thriving as compared to this point in legends, again, barring the massive amount of SSD’s and generally super ships in palpatines dark empire (more than twenty super star dreadnought style ships, including eclipse? What were you compensating for, 90s david bowie Palpatine?)
>>
>>1740372
I REALLY need to try to make a political map . . .

Huttspace is sort of nestled within/behind Rebel turf.

Same with Kessel/the Maw. Lots of Rebel space between here and there.

>>1740377
>More ISDs

Someone did the math and discovered the Empire could have built like 10k ISDs for what it cost to build the Death Star.

1: Star Wars is bad at realism
2: Fear of force rather than force itself. The Death Star would negate the need for massive star fleets and occupational forces.

>Power gap
No, Hutt Space is not a unified threat. In fact, they are so set back that there are reports of Rebel forces operating out of Hutt Space. It's almost like Space Casablanca at the moment, both sides can operate within it and just avoid pissing off the Hutts and unifying them.

As your borders get nearer, it will be more of a concern.

>>1740383
>Memory fuzzy on if we got more.
Nope, the other two were destroyed. One at Galantos, one at N'zoth.

Imperial Intelligence confirms all of this, or the strong probability.

>>1740383
In fact, everything about this is pretty spot on.
>>
>>1740377
My understanding is that developed planets (like Alderaan) can have planetary shield generators that make them virtually immune to conventional bombardment due to the virtually unlimited size of planet side generators. Even on Hoth the tiny rebel base had shields that could block "any bombardment" from Vader's fleet including his SSD. Planets could in theory defy the Empire, put up their shields, and as long as they didn't need food or other outside supplies just laugh at the 28 orbiting SSD's. The Death Star on the other hand could easily overpower any planet side shielding. It removed the perception that any planet could be beyond the Empire's reach.

plus the Emperor has a raging boner for superweapons.
>>
>>1740390
>Fear of force rather than force itself. The Death Star would negate the need for massive star fleets and occupational forces.
That's pretty much the Tarkin Doctrine. Besides, in the EU they were also developing World Devastators, which make resource harvesting incredibly efficient.

Speaking of Superweapons, we don't have Lemalisk, but what about Umak Leth? Assuming he exists, he should be free to work on something for us.
>>
>>1740399
>Planetary Shields

That's actually a really good point. Something I hadn't considered. I'll see that now as a response to avoid the sort of dead lock that was frequent in the late Clone Wars

>>1740408
>Umak Leth
Pretty sure he was mentioned in passing at one point but I may be wrong . . . you have crazy super geniuses making designs somewhere. The bottleneck is the resources to build them.

World Devastators may be an option, but that's resources for another Division/Fleet/SSD etc
>>
>>1740390
>10k ISD's

By the force...

Anyway it's obvious that the first thing we have to do is to launch a raidding fleet against Darc's shipyards. We need to keep the rebels from building up their ships so we can go and deal with the others.

Maybe if we manage to weaken the rebels enough the other warlords wi try to take what they canfrom the weaken rebel alliance.

I also want to Send Cynthera after the Dark prophets and other indepedents dark siders.
>>
>>1740390
Totally missed your post above while writing, but good to have it confirmed, more or less. Isard deserves a force spank as a reward at some point, mad men style.. Really, the problem is that Dark empire storyline had such a hardon for superweapons and SSD’s and whatnot so it skews the numbers for surviving SSD’s. Take away those and it’s much, much fewer from other sources
>In fact, everything about this is pretty spot on.
Thanks. I spend way too much time reading and rereading this quest on the archives.
However, it is clear to me in this timeline that MAJOR WARLORD status is based around having some kind of an SSD, as one of them is equal to the firepower of more ISD's than any typical "one sector" warlord or moff would have, here. And as long as you have one you can browbeat enough local goons to follow you, so even if you lose territory you can just regroup around it and go on the counteroffensive or attack elsewhere. Ackbar is bright enough to know they can’t always count on sabotaging/rogue squadroning their way through every encounter, and so they will be building some typical of capital ships in answer. Frankly, they don’t need more than one or two, and I have a feeling we’re likely to see a New Republic/Zsinj teamup at some point if Thrawn continues pressing them, which could net them one more SSD.
>>
>>1740414

You belong in Imperial Intelligence lol. There is a lot that is unknown. Isard's intel gathering capabilities are severely diminished from their height and rely a lot on sub-par sources further from the Empire proper. Thrawn, Zsinj, and the Rebellion are very large unknowns, namely because all three are difficult to infiltrate.

Even Centerpoint station was mentioned as not being accessible as a superweapon, at some point.

>>
>>1740444
I would elect to fill it with bombs or some kind of poison and drop it on Dac.

>>
>>1741931
Thanks TK!
>Puts on Imperial Intelligence hat
Well then, some quite interesting differences and developments compared to the rough draft of the galaxy map, as well as some territorial shifts.

In the northeast quadrant of the galaxy, perhaps the most interesting is that the Rebel blob is not one continuous uninterrupted blob from Mon Cal (or, as we discussed above, Dac) to the Core frontier. An Imperial remnant faction blocks the path from Boonta to Kashyyyk. At a guess, we are witnessing the reappearance of Admiral Teradocs “Maldrood” faction in this timeline, since the territory roughly fits it. Presumably the rebels are getting supplies from the space around Dac to the big rebel blob through Hutt space, as TK previously mentioned that place is weakly held and a bit of a free for all. Another note is that the Great Tion region is explicitly depicted as being independent (A deviation from legends, where Zsinj annexed it), though very likely heavily influenced by Zsinj and giving an industrial boost to his war machine, probably as a tribury state. Expect Rebel/Zsinj conflicts about control of this region be the main impediment to the formation of a Rebel/Zsinj alliance of convenience, at least until the pressure gets too hot. Corporate sector on the other hand is clearly in Zsinj domain, all in all he has a pretty healthy industrial base for being an outer rim pirate king, as Isard said at some point. Unless the rebels ally with the “Maldrood” faction, expect the new capital ships in development on Dac to premiere against the Maldrood in a big blitz to unify rebel territory once they are ready.

Nearby, hutt space looks like a big independent faction, though it is infact “space Casablanca” in TK’s words, with both factions able to operate there with impunity of Hutt interests. Given reports of rebel forces operating out of it, there is a real danger of a rebel sponsored slave… rebellion toppling it and either sending it into a big civil war or turning it into firm rebel territory, both which are bad for our interests.

The main and big rebel blob is quite large and faces a generally divided opposition. Of interest is the ongoing siege of Carida, which we should get too before it’s too late, getting valuable troops and assets. Not too far away is Hapes, where the interesting question is if the Hapes consortium has allied with the rebels, since they are surrounded by? If so they will be a reliable fall back position to the rebels, and a rear guard danger since they are off the main hyperlanes.
>1/2 continued
>>
>>1743243
Another pocket of a remnant/warlord faction is the aridus to kalarba pocket. Beats me who rules out of there, perhaps Lesan Ramier, Moff of Brak sector (flashpoint! Brak sector is an excellent WEG Sourcebook if you guys are into rpg’s, as an aside note) and they are of fairly low interest, though Bacrana has or had an independent shipyard. In the southern quadrant the rebels have divided Selvardus Eriadu authority and are well placed to get their hands on the very valuable shipyard worlds of Sullust and Eriadu. The big surprise is that the “Fondor to Wroona” pocket is affiliated with Salverdus and not its own warlord faction, making Salverdus much more powerful than I thought, with control of Fondor and Thyferra. Dude’s definitely building another SSD on Fondor, where Vader’s Executor was originally built.

There’s two more blobs, on each side of Eriadu, one of which which Admiral Yzu might be operating out of, possibly one of the other is this version of the Prentioch dominion. No comments really, pretty worthless turf except for Bespin and Svivren respectively. Note the absence of Kathol sector/Moff Sarne as an independent faction, for you fans of the darkstryder campaign. Either dead or irrelevant.

And now, for our surprise imperial remnant faction, lets give it up for the mysterrrrious stranger, a tiny imperial warlord blob around Bakura! Clearly the imperial defence fleet easily defeated the Ssi-Ruuvi invasion. Which makes sense, since a single ISD has got more firepower than all the capital ships of the Ruuvi fleet at the Truce of bakura, so, who knows, maybe a single surviving star destroyer of Death squadron went off there and saved the day. Or maybe the invasion hasn’t even happened yet… Nothing of value there frankly, barring some repulsor engine factories if I remember it right.

Thrawn, nothing much to say except that his industrial base is in the northern territories, basicly as far away from us as possible, and will be hard to ruin. He’s got the ability to trade space for time if needed in a conflict against us, and he will use it to deliver a backhanded blow, Manstein style, in a conflict.

We should liberate Carida before it’s too late, and seize Fondor to Wroona (including Thyferra, home of the bacta), as soon as possible. If the rebels get it, we’ll be pretty fucked strategicly, frankly.
>>
>>1743245
I agree completely on Carida. I'm happy to see it's still independent, we should claim it before either the Rebels or Thrawn move in. I can only imagine it would prove a very valuable jewel for our ground military.

I doubt Isard can pull off a second Brenntal Miracle, but I'd like to hear what she's got planned for getting us back the Eriadu territories.

Don't give up hope yet :D

>>1743243
>Admiral Teradocs “Maldrood” faction
Yep.

>Tion
From Cythera's brief travels in this region, you know that the Tionese government is an Imperial remnant-type faction with a strong Tionese nationalist bent. They pay lip service to Zsinj, but also seek to avoid conflict with the Rebels which they grant some freedom of movement, as evidenced by Luke's convoy passing through.

Previously a sort of client state of the Empire, now after Endor it's official stance is "armed neutrality". Their unofficial relation with the Rebellion is unknown.

Ah, that's pretty interesting and a cool deviation from legends. Perhaps we might be looking at the resurrection of Xim's empire, with a pseudo imperial flavor a few years down the line. Honestly, the northeastern quadrant is pretty packed with factions, it should be interesting to see who comes out on top.
And since you are fixing the map, "Other remnants" is typo'd as Other Remanants

Kathol is probably too weak to appear on the map, he/it might still exist as per the definition by TK of unaffiliated territory in the map.

Another place that needs some orbital bombardment. Helping rebels is bad helping Luke is worts.

They are too far away though. Doing a quick bombardment run would just create an enemy. Oh, what a sad time for the empire when the answer to every question is not to use orbital bombardment... One day perhaps

I'm surprised that Rodia and Ryloth aren't part of the New Republic.

Same with Kessel and Hutt Space, given spice production.

Can't wait till we walk into the Maw Installation though.

The random remnant faction at Bakura is random. Probably survivors from Endor.

It would be cool to see this map every couple threads to see how the factions have changed - but would we be able to actually gain this in-game?

Exhaustion wasn't the best state of mind to be in while reviewing hyperspace calculations while burning through the Deep Core, but it was the one you found yourself in today. Running a ship was hard enough without also trying to entertain an occasionally petulant, Duchess.

"I want us to add two more degrees of distance from that star on this jump," you say, indicating the point on the chart to your navigator.

"Yes, ma'am. That's going to add some time to our trip, maybe a few hours."

"I'll take that over death," you say. "The S-thread boosters are nearing their maintenance window through here and I don't want-"

"Commander Tyrna," you see your communications officer approaching at a fast trot. "Commander."

"Yes?"

"Madame Director Yssane Isard is on the holocom for you," the officer says it in a voice just above a whisper.

So, it looks like Ederlathh wasn't wrong about the background of those Shocktroopers, though it was surprising Isard herself would call you directly. You knew that delaying would only prolong the situation and likely make it worse. Though it was telling to you that the Director herself would call you and not one of her subordinates. Whatever those Shocktroopers were up to was important enough to warrant her direct attention.

"I'll take it in my ready room."

***

The image that resolved was a visage that struck fear into the hearts of men and women across the Empire. Yssane Isard, Director of Imperial Intelligence and one time leader of the Imperial Remnant. With long dark hair set through with white streaks and a pair of mismatched eyes, one red, one blue, she was certainly an imposing figure.

"Madame Director," you greet.

"Commander Tyrna," Isard looks at you like you're an interesting species of insect. "Running from something, Commander? People on the Byss Run can be difficult to track down."

You swallow, "No, ma'am. I'm on official orders."

"Yes, from Moff Volen," Isard says the name with distaste "At the behest of Duchess Pallopides it seems."

"Yes, ma'am. That's correct."

"It seems you've taken some sort of . . . personal interest in the Duchess," Isard says, her tone makes it clear not only does she seem to know more about your 'interest' in the duchess than you'd been open about, but that very much disapproves.

"How can I help you, made director?" You don't take her bait. If the Director of Intelligence wants to get a rise out of you, she'll have to do better.

"It was brought to my attention that, based on a holonet query sent by your subordinate," Isard says, reading off a datapad, "it seems you've become aware of some of my agents on board your vessel."

You made no response, "I think it would be best that you stopped your unauthorized investigation into the loyalties of your crew, and leave the intelligence work to us."

You make no reply and Isard gives you a cold, humor-less smile.

It's not like we have anything to hide from her. All the record about our pilots were abort the splinter. Besides if the duchess is being observed so she doesn't do anything weird while on Byss that is fine.

"Yes, ma'am," you keep your expression perfectly neutral.

"Duchess Pallopides escort is to remain with her, and you are not to interfere with their orders or operation any further."

"Of course, Director."

Isard studies you hard for a few moments, clearly daring you to say more. "Don't make me waste my time with you again," she says and ends the transmission.

You exhale. Director Yssane Isard is not an enemy you want. You'd heard that she'd managed to personally "collect" High Admiral Reddrin and that she also managed to talk her way out of trouble when she initially resisted the Emperor's call for her to return. No mean feat.

She was powerful, ruthless, and dangerous. Of course, it also begged the question of why Isard herself and not one of her subordinates would direct her attention to this matter. In any case, you didn't have the time to worry about it. Only a few hours remained before your final jumps to Byss and you still had work to do.

(1/2)
>>
You hadn't thought you’d see your home again, truth be told. Byss was of course safe enough within the Empire that it didn't need much of an active navy presence. Byss's security forces in fact were totally separate from the navy. Most were members of Imperial Intelligence, others were not members of the Komissari or various other security organizations. The blue-green glow of Byss's sun, Beshqek paints the bridge of your ship in eerie hues. It was the light of your childhood.

You'd made sure Ederlathh was on the bridge for your arrival in system.

"Wow." she says, "There's so many ships."

You yourself were startled by the sheer number of vessels in orbit of Byss, forming an artificial ring of durasteel around the planet, hundreds, maybe thousands of vessels circled the paradise-world. As Retribution neared, under the watchful guns of some of Byss's many orbital defense platforms, you drew close enough to recognize that many of these were vessels under construction, while many more were bulk freighters, shipping in the material required for daily life on Byss, not to mention the ongoing war effort. It was here that the Empire was reborn, most literally. You took a small measure of pride that your homeworld was such an integral component of the Empire.

"Star Destroyer Retribution, this is Byss Planetary Security. You are entering the Byss Security Zone, standby to transmit security clearance." The voice that warbled through the communications terminal nearby was so utterly detached it almost seemed inhuman. You knew full well your security clearances were up to date and valid, (unless anyone had tampered with them) but you also knew full well that Byss Security wouldn't hesitate to vaporize your star destroyer in an instant should anything untoward happen.

"They're a little touchy, aren’t they?" Ederlathh asks, looking nervous.

"They're just doing their jobs," you say, concealing your own apprehension, "Transmit the codes now," you tell your communications officer.

"Retribution, you are clear to proceed. Welcome to Byss."

Your ship cruises past the black, monolithic weapons platform that had challenged and approved you, its turbolaser batteries glinting sinisterly in the turquoise light of the planet and then you are through the security zone, your assigned path taking you away from the ship hulks in orbit and those on patrol, and toward an orbital highdock, a spiny-looking ball buzzing with smaller shuttlecraft and freighters.

You snort, "On Byss? Might as well bring sand to Tatooine. I'll be fine. I can even pilot the Lambda down. I will bring a squad of troopers though."

Bastra hesitates as he divines your meaning. "Very well. Our clearance gives us two days and then we have to return to Imperial Center."

As your shuttle coasts through the humid atmosphere of Byss, sailing over sparkling green oceans and mint-tinted beaches, you cast a glance back at the other passengers of your shuttle.

Ederlathh's eternally silent handmaid sits beside you in the co-pilot's chair, only her vivid green eyes visible above her veil, though she never maintained eye contact with you. In the back, Ederlathh sits with a look of perpetual boredom and beside her the RA-7, it's matte coating scuffed and dented from a lifetime of hard use. It was just as ignored as the handmaid.

The Lambda's cargo compartment carried the Shocktrooper squad that you now knew to be little more than a group of Imperial Intelligence agents in disguise, though at this point it seemed everyone was aware of their deception except perhaps themselves. In addition, your own battle-tested troopers were held in the rear. You wondered if Stromtroopers made small talk between branches or if there was some professional pride in remaining stoically silent.

Your destination is not, as most visiting Byss, the Imperial citadel or the continent-spanning city that was Imperial Control Sector, but rather something much more rural.

You boost the repulsorlifts slightly to lift the shuttle over a slight rise in the ground topped with a row of palm trees which thrashed in the exhaust stream of your shuttle as you passed overhead. As you did, the threat indicator on your console suddenly chirps to life and two TIE /Lns scream overhead, banking around hard to fall into your six O'clock position.

"Shuttle Serenity, this is Venrys Security patrol, we've been tasked to escort you in."

Your father's doing no doubt, as if there was anything to protect against but agreeable weather out here. "Affirmative Venrys patrol, we'll follow your lead."

Within minutes, the greenery of Byss gives way to the small settlement that centered on your families estate. Venrys.

You circle the estate once, keeping half an eye on the controls as you try to study the town itself and see what, if anything, has changed.

Your home's formal gardens are immaculate as always, the white-stone façade polished and clean. In the narrow streets of the town below, you could see figures pausing, lifting a hand to shield their eyes and looking up at the strange ship circling overhead. Nearly a thousand people called Venrys home, with the settlement's limits periodically being expanded outward, the scrubland around being routinely cleared for more habitats and what farmland they could justify.

It was no wonder your father spent as little time as possible here, preferring the hustle and bustle of Imperial Control Sector, or even Imperial Center itself if he could help it. It was one of the reasons that when you were Ederlathh's age you longed to enroll in the Academy, just to break the monotony of small town life. Especially a town where you were akin to a minor celebrity.

(2/4)
>>
Finally, your orbit of the town ended and you angle your shuttle directly for the landing pad ahead where you see a second shuttle, marked with the black piping of an Imperial dignitary, a second pair of Tie /Lns, a small group of I-7 Howlrunners, and a small congregation of people escorted by white-armored stormtroopers.

"I'm taking us in," you say to no one in particular, taking a deep breath and following your training from memory as you initiated the landing cycle.

The shuttle lowers to the duracrete pad bellow, landing struts extending without issue and settling onto its hydraulics without complaint.

You exhale, remembering why you didn't typically fly yourself anywhere if you could help it. But this errand was different, it was personal.

The four of you in the main party exit the shuttle under the escort of the associated Stormtroopers your brought along, marching down the landing ramp and toward the waiting delegation.

Your mother and father are there, your father, dressed all in black and towering over the others in the party, your mother wearing a white dress that flutters in the warm breeze, both looking less than pleased.

You sigh to yourself while you still had the freedom to do so.

The rest of their group was a handful of minor bureaucrats, friends of your father's you supposed, assuming he had something friends, and a scattering of Stormtroopers. Even here, on the fringes of civilization on Byss, there was no avoiding the military might of the Empire.

Your parents start forward, followed by a pair of troopers.

(3/4)
>>
"Duchess Pallopides," Your mother says, "What an honor to have you here. I hope your trip was agreeable." She wasted no time ingratiating herself to the Duchess.

"Thank you Lady Tyrna," Ederlathh says, gracefully taking your mother's hand. "I could not have asked for a better host than your daughter."

By the look on you mother's face, she had forgotten you existed. "Quite."

"Duchess, please, we prepared a room for you in the estate for your stay, I wasn't sure how long you intended to be."

Ederlathh gives her Handmaid a look that she doesn't reciprocate, "It shouldn’t be long. I won't impose."

"Oh, it's no imposition!" your mother says.

"I was taking up Commander Tyrna on her offer to visit her estate. We had a chance to speak on Kuat during the victory ball."

At these words, your father's expression manages to improve slightly. "Is that so?"

Your mother gives a backward glance at the crowd and a second set of individuals emerges, people you hadn't noticed at first. A group of men in simple, clothes and an a Mon Calamari among them. They quickly move past you and onto the shuttle, emerging with your baggage which they begin to load on a nearby landspeeder. You watch the Mon Cal as he works, listening to his wheezing breath as he rushes the bags back and forth in the hot sun, a tepid breeze doing little to cool things off.

One of your father's laborers no doubt. Presumably in his situation because of some ill behavior, though to be working directly for Aldon Tyrna he must have managed some sort of improvement. The others are likely locals, they think you don't notice the looks they give you, and Ederlathh to some degree. You probably grew up with some of them, playing the same games in the street, and now you were a Commander in the Imperial Navy escorting a Duchess to your family estate and they were porting bags.

Such was the lot of most on Byss. You ruled, or were ruled in turn.

"Come on, Alana," your father says without a second glance back, turning away and walking for the second landspeeder that your mother was leading Ederlathh and her handmaid to.

You look back at the Shocktroopers who are apparently content to sit and guard the landing pad, at least until the function is over. Strange that they would be so content to let the Duchess out of their sight. Although, that was assuming their objective was to watch her.

Your father barely reacts as you close the door to the landspeeder behind you. The two of you shared a private compartment in the rear of the speeder with Ederlathh, your mother, and the Duchess's companions in the forward compartment. The other hangers-on boarded other speeders or traveled on foot back into town, toward the estate.

"It's good to see you, father," you say. "I'm glad to be home, it makes quite a change after the Koornacht Cluster.' It was a white lie. You'd rather be coordinating defense plans with Lobkin in Corellian space.

"Hmm," your father is reading a datapad in his lap. At a glance, you catch a list of productivity figures for the Yevethan workers employed in the orbital yards of Byss. "Well it comes at a critical time for me," he says, "Although I suppose it gives me a chance to coordinate construction efforts more closely."

You swallow, trying to find a good way to broach the subject of the Shocktroopers, instead you found yourself only making small talk. "And how are the Yevetha working out as laborers?"

"We lost an additional 10% to motivational problems upon their arrival, a further 5% had to be spent to motivate the rest, and unfortunately that included a high number of our most technically skilled." He sighs, "But now they're properly utilized. Productivity is up 3% across the board, even with the setbacks from the diversion of resources to starfighter production."

You desperately want to remind your father of the role you played in securing those precious workers for him, but you don't, instead lapsing back into silence.

This clearly surprises your father who lowers his datapad to give you a blank stare.

"Those Shocktroopers with the Duchess . . . They're Imperial Intelligence."

He blinks and puts the datapad down. "What? How do you know?"

"They were acting strangely, their leader. I looked up his service record and things didn't match up," you find yourself talking quickly. "The end result being that Director Isard called me directly and told me to stop my investigation at once."

"And I hope you did!" your father exclaims.

"Of course I did," you say, "But . . . Things seem strange, why does Intelligence care about the Duchess?"

Your father shakes his head, "Those sort of questions aren't our place to ask. I'm sure Director Isard has her reasons."

"How should I handle this?"

He looks exasperated, "Alana, this is not a matter you should concern yourself with. Political struggles are not something naval Commanders should worry about."

Your father seemed resolute on this. Speaking as one of the Empire's higher ups you supposed he had a different perspective on the spooks of Intelligence crawling around your ship.

"Father, I can't help but think that their being here has something to do with this estate."

Your father looks ready to interrupt you, but you keep talking. "I'm not speaking ill of the Empire, but Intelligence doesn't always have the best intentions for its citizens."

"Alana, please," he looks perturbed, "Thinking like that can get you places you don't want to be. If you're questioning their orders, then you're questioning our leaders. If we can't trust our leaders-"

"Imperial agents shouldn't have been so incompetent as to be discovered within hours of boarding my vessel," you say, which gives him pause. "And they were under orders to accompany the Duchess everywhere according to Isard, yet now they are staying behind at the shuttle. That's not a problem of leadership."

Your father says nothing. "And all that baggage the porters took . . . Did you see how they looked at us? I'm not sure what could be in those bags . . . " You take a deep breath before continuing "I'm smart enough to know this is out of my league and I will not investigate further. I'm merely urging you to have extreme caution, father."

Your father lays a hand on your shoulder. "If it will make you feel more comfortable, I'll have my security searched the luggage taken off the shuttle, and I'll have it done as soon as we arrive. Alana, I am nothing if not cautious. The security of myself and this family is paramount."

You exhale, "Thank you." you let silence linger a moment before adding, "Have you ever had to deal with anything like this?"

Your father looks, surprisingly conflicted, his normally dour features replaced with a concerned, almost haunted look. "Things were different before you were born, Alana. A lot changed very quickly. I've been subject to intrigue, but . . . " he trails off. "The empire has given us a lot," he says. "We should remember that."

"Do you know anything about Moff Volen?"

"Volen," your father says, "I believe he handles affairs around Imperial Center. I think he's one of Isard's old people, from before . . . " he trails off.

What he left unsaid you could fill in. From before Isard's faction reintegrated with the Empire. It was a chronic issue in the Empire, the inability to recognize true adversity until it was too late. Even the Rebel Alliance was treated as a nuisance until they had destroyed a Death Star, and even then only given half attention until after the Emperor himself was dead. Your father had an old school method of approaching such obstacles.

"Isard's?" you repeat. "Then why would he sign Ederlathh's transportation orders?"

Your father looks distant, "Volen is an opportunist, not a loyalist. Ederlathh is a promising young woman, a lot of potential power at her fingertips. I imagine Volen saw some reason to do her a favor."

"And risk crossing Isard?"

"We don't know that Isard has any ill-intentions toward the Duchess," he cautions.

"Thank you father."

He nods.

"I'm glad to hear the Yevetha are working out. They were tough opponents on the battlefield, so it's hardly surprise to learn they're capable workers," you say, trying to steer the conversation toward your accomplishments.

"Intelligent," your father says, "But they lack basic elements of civilization like so many of the non-humans."

"They were brutal on the battlefield," you say, reminding yourself of the hostages you'd failed to save at Aradia. After the battle the transmissions were tracked to a base on Aradia's moon. After it was stormed, your men had slaughtered the Yevetha within, but none of the hostages had lived. The story had been repeated at several other worlds during the Empire's advance.

"They've learned to be docile again. They may be brutal, but enough discipline can cow even the fiercest animal into submission." His words were harsh, but he could just as well have been discussing a troublesome repulsor drive for all the emotion he gave it.

You bite your tongue, wanting to shout at your father. I have an Imperial-Class Star Destroyer now! I'm a commander now! I conquered Aradia! I captured Intimidator! Haven't you noticed!? He hadn't hesitated to criticize your lack of advancement when you were a mere captain, but now that you were halfway respectable, it seemed he didn't even notice your career.

Your father picks his datapad back up and continues to browse figures, pausing occasionally to add a note on some estimate or another. Your fold your arms and turn to look out the speeder's window, fighting down your inner unhappiness.

As the landspeeder winds its way through Venrys's narrow avenues, pedestrians craning their heads and peering at the tinted windows of the speeder, trying to get a glimpse of the occupants. After passing through a market square and a small housing section, the speeder begins an uphill climb toward the Tyrna Family Estate which you now see from the ground. An venerable house perched on a hill, done in a pre-Republic style with a white stone façade turned to turquoise by Byss's blue-green sun.

(1/2)
>>
In reality, you were not actually born on Byss, but rather taken here as a very young child. You were born on Coruscant close to the beginning of the Clone Wars and brought to Byss shortly after its conclusion. You could only just barely remember playing in what would become the gardens, but was then half-cleared tropical scrub. You would look down from the hill at Venrys itself, just a collection of landed freighters, cargo containers and prefab shelters. On the far side of the town, alien laborers, who you now supposed were probably Separatist POWs, were clearing the brush and building more permanent structures for the human settlements.

Now the house looked as though it had stood for a thousand years.

The small speeder convoy that carried you from the landing pad coasts to a halt in front of the estate's main entrance. As you exit the landspeeder, you note how strange it feels again being home after so long. Not only is the alien sun frighteningly familiar, but you experience a strange sort of heaviness, a thickness in the air you had forgotten. Something even a tropical breeze fails to disperse. You feel almost more tired than relaxed.

Your father waves over a stormtrooper standing watch at the front of the estate, an officer as marked by the pauldron he wore.

"You and your men are to search these bags at once."

"Yes, Lord Tyrna." The trooper in turn signals some of his comrades over who begin to unload and open luggage.

"What!?" Ederlathh exclaims upon exiting the speeder. "What are you doing!?"

The captain of the guard addresses her, "We're under orders from Lord Tyrna-"

"I'm giving you orders to put my things up immediately before you ruin them!" Ederlathh exclaims, snatching up one of her personal bags.

"Duchess, we-" the trooper begins.

"Maybe I didn't make myself clear, you are not to touch my things." she glances at her handmaid, "You can search her bags if you want. But I am not going to see my clothes strewn all over the ground on the first day I'm here."

The trooper, helpless, turns to your father imploringly.

"Spare the Duchess's bags," he says. "She's trusted."

"Sir," the trooper confirms. "Apologies, Duchess."

Ederlatth just crossed her arms, her personal bag safely kept close to her as the Stormtroopers began to open the rest of the luggage and search it.

"Duchess, please accept my deepest apologies," your mother says. "Aldon can, at times be a bit over zealous in his security measures."

Your father, for his part, spares you only a quick look before continuing up the stairs into the estate.

Ederlathh does not respond to your mother's overtures and remains, eyeing the troopers rifling through her luggage. You remain with Ederlathh long enough to confirm that the troopers find nothing untoward, finishing their search of everything except the bag she is now ordering her handmaid to hoist into the house.

Part of you knew that Ederlathh was a noble accustomed to getting her own way, and a teenage girl at that, disinclined to let Imperial Stormtroopers dig through her personal belongings. Another part of you longed to see what might be hidden within that bag.

Putting these concerns out of mind, you ascend the steps to the estate, following behind your parents and Ederlathh.

(1/2)
>>
Upon entering you begin a process of re-acclimatizing to your childhood. Several servants immediately take possession of any luggage and begin directing the guests, including yourself, to their rooms. In your case, this meant a return to your own bedroom.

You found yourself overcome with a certain sense of nostalgia as one of the household servants opened the door to your childhood room, largely untouched since just before your application to the Academy. When you had left, your room was merely a reminder of a childhood self you wanted to leave behind, now it was a sort of memorial to the past.

You marveled at the holoimages left around your room, friends and places from the distant past. One image of you and your friends together on one of Byss's many beaches, smiling in the sun. Another one, a Holographic poster, took up most of one wall. It was your childhood crush, a holovid star, dressed as a fighter pilot, boarding a V-wing to go off and fight evil, presumably Separatists or Rebels, helmet in hands, hair blown back, steely eyes surveying a point just above and behind the viewer.

You smile at the simple girlhood fantasy, wondering what a real fighter jock like Vells would have to say about a poster like this in his commander's possession.

As much fun as it is to reminisce about the past, you have obligations in the present. You put down your personal bag and consider removing your blaster, though you decide against it. As secure as Byss is, you find yourself in this case wondering "who watches the watchmen".

You leave your room to return to the main study where the Duchess and your parents had adjoined. A high-ceilinged room done in rich wood paneling and tasteful oil paintings of past events, namely some historical battles. You can name many of them without looking. Geonosis, Mygeeto, Hoth.

On the far side of the room, between two wide windows that look out over your family's gardens is a fairly garish conversation piece. A life-sized marble statue of Palpatine as he appeared when he was Chancellor, arm outstretched, mouth open as if he were in mid-speech.

Your father had explained it to you once. He had the statue commissioned of the very moment he became a supporter of the now-Emperor. This speech rallied countless Republic worlds against the growing chaos that the Separatists represented. That moment sealed not only your father's fate, but yours as well, and, you supposed, the fate of the galaxy at large.

"Naboo sounds lovely," your mother is saying to Ederlathh who only nodded absently.

"Well, with Naboo in enemy hands, maybe I'll have to petition my Uncle for an estate here on Byss," Ederlathh's voice was distant, bored.

Ederlathh looks to you when you approach, her face neutral.

"Duchess Pallopides was just telling us about Naboo," your mother says, quickly adding, "I've never been but it sounds lovely.

"We discussed it a bit while we were target shooting," you say, your voice casual, but you carefully watch your mother's reaction.

"Target-" she clamps her mouth shut before she can finish lecturing you, giving Ederlathh a nervous look, though the Duchess didn't notice evidently.

You beam at your mother. "Ederlathh was telling me that the loss of Naboo motivates her to continue the fight against the Rebels. Is that right?"

"Sure. They're a bunch of gutter trash with delusions of grandeur," Ederlathh says, barely paying attention, suddenly something seems to perk her up. "Alana, tell me," she stares at the statue as she speaks, "What did you think was going to happen when you discovered the Emperor had been killed?" Finishing her question, she looks at you. "To the Empire I mean."

This is demonstrably correct. Not even using my meta-knowledge of the NJO/Legacy EU and movies, just from galactic history. The implications are strange, but now beginning to dawn on you. "No," you say. "Not possible. Of course, physically someone could rule the Empire, but no one has the intelligence, will, or ability like Palpatine. I think he was destined to rule."

Ederlathh looks intrigued.

"Look what happened to the galaxy when everyone thought he had been killed. Everything unraveled, chaos that dwarfed even the Clone Wars consumed everything. You said it yourself, selfishness on the Rebels' part started this war and nearly destroyed everything we had built."

You catch a hint of pride in your father's expression.

"I think you're right," Ederlathh says. "The Jedi tried to rule for centuries, but by their nature they were self-absorbed. Palpatine and the Sith brought stability and order."

"Palpatine single-handedly saved our family," your father says, "Everyone, from the coming chaos. While the senate wanted to bicker and argue about taxation, and trade treaties, and who should have to carry the burden of government, Palpatine took that work upon himself. He rid our galaxy of those parasites and built an Empire of peace."

It seemed you may have found a way to your father's heart. A mutual love of the Emperor.

>>
The rest of the day proceeded without incident, Ederlathh making the occasional snide comment to your mother as she tried desperately to win her favor. For the most part, Ederlathh was well behaved, reacting more often with disinterest than any malicious intent.

You had expected the day to resolve this way as well.

"Lady Tyrna," A sudden voice whispers in your ear.

You look back in mild alarm at a stone-faced servant. "There is a holonet message for you in the parlor."

A message? "Yes, thank you. If you'll excuse me."

Your family hardly notices your absence, Ederlathh is being delivered a story about your mother's childhood as a wealthy socialite.

Your footsteps echo loudly in the broad hall before you enter the parlor, door hissing closed behind you. You had a knot in your gut, fearing that either Bastra was calling with bad news, or maybe Isard was ready for round two.

The image that resolved startled you perhaps more than either of those you feared would have.

"Ah, Lady Tyrna, I'm glad to see you're doing well and looking ravishing I might add. I'm glad my naval contacts were correct about your current station. You're a hard woman to find!"

You blink, pausing a moment to gather your composure, "Yes, I apologize Mr. Luar, I received sudden orders to travel to Byss."

Your recollection of the Kuat Ball was returning to you. Bin Luar, a mid-level Kuati noble who had all but proposed to you was calling you up. While you had turned down his offers of an "alliance" between houses, you had promised him access to the upper levels of "House Tyrna".

"Well, this is fortuitous," he says, idly running a finger along the short mustache he was sporting, "Because I was checking up to see if you had spoken with your father today. Is Lord Tyrna about?"

"He is," you say, avoiding the issue.

"Wonderful. Because I've recently had the opportunity to see the production numbers coming out of Byss and much to my surprise, they're up! Who would have thought a bunch of spiced-out beach bums could out produce Kuat itself. Not on a gross basis, but per capita. Still, numbers matter."

"I think my father was reviewing those same figures earlier," you say.

"Well, then surely your father knows who is to be credited with this surplus of productivity."

He doesn't give you time to respond.

"It's those damned Xenos, the Yevetha. Spiky little bastards have something of a knack for technology don't they?"

"It would seem so."

"So, it would seem to me that Kuat is going to need to get a hold of some of them in order to even the edge Byss has found itself. I know your father has vast leeway when it comes to 'Alien Labor' and I know that you're my conduit to him. I need some of those Xenos for myself. I think I'm owed that much at least."

You feel the red tide of anger rising within you, "I beg your pardon?"

"I think I spelled it out pretty clearly," Bin Luar says, "you owe me."

I am bound by honor and nothing else, no contract or anything of the sorts. Do not attempt to twist my words or give me those thinly veiled threats."

"Threats?" Luar asks, feigning hurt, "Who said anything about threats? I'm talking about collecting payment for services rendered. I didn't round up a few million credits worth of fighters for a pat on the head."

"As I said, I will go talk to him about the aliens."

"That'd be good," he says. "Here's hoping for a positive answer, I'd hate to damage our working relationship. I'll be standing by. Call me when you've got an answer."

He ends the com.

It takes all your mental fortitude not to flip a nearby end table into the holoprojector. You wondered if all Kuati's were this impossible to deal with. Keep it up! Doing great, my friend.

More grand strategy! Intrigue, plotting and backstabbing. I'd like to see us as Palps for longer periods and use different methods of conquest while Alana handles all the naval aggression. Why not look into more "peaceful" methods of gaining territory? Alliances that lead to integration? Economic warfare? Trade blockades? Sabotaging enemy states from within? Assassination? Surely there must be other methods that don't center on military might to regain our territories.

All good points, I've been focused on injecting more flavor into Palpatine so he's not always sitting on a throne and talking to people. Maybe it's be best if I knuckled down on choices to be made instead.

We'll get back to him soon, there's just a lot going on with Alana and I wanted to give her some love and fleshing out.

As far as things like that, that's more up to the players, and most of those strategies work at a planetary level. It might be tedious to decide to begin a trade embargo on Ubrikkia until they rejoin for instance. I'll figure something out

>Yes, it's interesting to see players solidly her opinions on things, and now it's clear Alana believers in the near divinity of the Emperor.
What else would we believe in, TK?
>>
>>1746222
>What's something you don't see enough of in this quest?
We haven't really felt challenged at any point. By that I mean that even though we have had difficult battles we almost lost (the Moon battle in particular), the Empire as a whole has always gone from strength to strength - victory to victory. It might be "nice" to see what the big dangerous rebel blob can do and to have to react to a serious threat that risks upsetting already laid plans.

>What are you gonna do about Thrawn?
We (as Palpy) were kind enough to allow Thrawn to sit in on one of our high-command meetings. It would only be fair for Thrawn to return the favor. Perhaps Palpy should pressure Thrawn to allow us to get more involved in Thrawn's strategic planning and operations as part of a slow reunification process. Getting to observe (some) of the people he surrounds himself with could help provide us with valuable insights - although as with everything Thrawn it could also be an elaborate deception...

>And feel free to bombard me with any questions you may have!
Do you see a possibility Alana might ever change her personality or beliefs? For now she is a true believer - an "idealist" who supports the emperor and justifies (and even carries out) its worst atrocities. Could she eventually become disillusioned with the Empire? She is a pretty smart girl, after all, even though she has grown up in the heart of the Emperor's power on Byss.
>>
>>1747226
>strength to strength
This is absolutely true, and a completely valid criticism. This also touches on the lack of the Jedi doing much to actively interfere with Palpatine that was mentioned here >>1747073

If you don't care about meta shit, don't read the following:

I live in perpetual fear of horribly unbalancing the game and making everything too easy or two hard, something to keep in mind.

So, firstly, it's important to keep in mind that the war hasn't even really gotten to full swing, you've got a core foothold and bloodied the rebels nose, but it's far from over.

Things will ramp up in intensity when Shadow Hand begins. I have threats and problems on the horizon but I obviously can't discuss them without spoiling things. But if this were the Trilogy, we're still in a New Hope in our arc.

I have a lot of tough balancing choices to make, especially knowing any major defeat or setback could be perceived as unfair, or unwarranted or even could horribly upset the game. If anyone likes hearing their QM whine about game design, feel free to pm me on Twitter :D

Otherwise tl;Dr is: there is a shortage of tough challenges, I'm aware and working on it!

>Alana change her beliefs

That's tough to say, really it's entirely up to the players of course, I won't make Alana someone they don't want to be.

Truth be told though, I don't think she's liable to change unless you guys are just really into role playing. Asking her to doubt the Emperor is asking you to doubt yourselves. A lot of players would see that as self-defeating.

Clearly at game start Alana was disillusioned with what the Empire had become and longed for a return to "glory. Now, she's seen the cost and the human toll of that. Not to mention has seen some of the darker sides of the Empire. Corruption, nepotism, cruelty, indifference, but she clearly believes these things are a part of life. She doesn't bat an eye sending conscripts to die in bloody battles they may not even believe in. She doesn't flinch at letting an enslaved Mon Cal carry her bags, or hearing her father describe population culling in clinical terms.

I think Alana could change, but I don't think she's likely to, and that's going to shape her character development.

>What's something you don't see enough of in this quest?
Good bloody intelligence from Isard, it's like she's been sleeping all these years and only kept tabs on the immediate two people standing around her. I know it's for balance reasons, but still, she's quite disappointing
>What are you gonna do about Thrawn?
Thrawn craves stability, that is the return of a unified rule of the galaxy, under a not completely bonkers leaders. So long as we don't go full darkside retard (which I have to say Palpatine has been doing a good job of avoiding, it's taking a bit of the fun out of it honestly) we should be able to bring Thrawn to our side. Keep the pointless BDZ's to a minimum, and later we'll offer him his place back in the Empire, and say a tripling of resources for his Unknown regions endeavours. Really, that's what he wants-
If he refuses, for whatever reason, the simplest thing would be to a) divide Thrawn from Kaine. Kaine, at the end of the day, genuinely believes in the New Order. He felt snubbed when he was exiled to the outer rim as Tarkins replacement. We could bring him back by offering him a place in Coruscant drafting policy, dangling Mas ameddas position of post of Royal Vizier (or making him the head of compnor or a similar position) would be a good way to sway him from our side. That would take away a sizeable chunk of Thrawns resources, and open up the way for quickly decapacitating him. And on that note, the best (but most anticlimactic) way would be to assassinate him. Certainly, if he has the Noghri working with him, they would be easy to subvert to us, as their original lords. Without Thrawn, his holding would be easy pickings. I hope it doesn't come to it.
However if we go completely crazymode and mass produce superweapons and whatnot, a Thrawn lead alliance against us would be a worthy challenge.

If Alana ever find out what the emperor did to Byss. I think she would a good reason to have a change of mind. Not that she would believe it unless she witnessed it or someone gave her hard proof of it.
