In a time of global conflict, the elite international task force Overwatch was formed. Soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities: together, they ended the Omnic Crisis and restored peace to a war-torn world. For a generation, the heroes of Overwatch protected the world, inspiring an era of exploration, innovation, and discovery.

After many years, Overwatch became troubled, and was finally disbanded by official U.N. order. Soon world conflict and terror rose again. Governments weakened by strife ceded power to mega-corporations. Militaries were replaced by private security forces. Some omnics returned to war with humanity; others remained peaceful, but faced fear and violence from humans affected by the war. The global crime syndicate Talon, in the absence of their perpetual rivals, rose to vast wealth and power, pushing entire nations into chaos.

You are a young man who's been many things: adventurer, treasure hunter, freedom fighter, and international criminal. But before all that, you dreamed of helping defend the world with Overwatch. When you encountered Tracer on that fateful night and agreed to help her rebuild, you didn't quite realize what you were getting yourself into. Joining as the first new recruit of the reborn team, you soon found yourself as unofficial leader in coalition with Athena, apparently the world's only benevolent Mind.

In the weeks since then, you, Tracer, and your new friends have travelled the globe, recruiting former agents and newcomers to the cause, and doing what you can to protect the citizens of Earth from the forces of chaos, oppression, and war. Although most people don't realize it yet, Overwatch has returned. But against Talon, Anubis, and the allied megacorps, is one small team of vigilantes really enough?

The world needs heroes, and you're trying to be one of them.

The mission to Hyde Global's tower in Singapore was a complete success, you were happy to report upon your return to the Watchpoint. Not only did you retrieve some sensitive and useful data from that executive's terminal, but you unexpectedly came into contact with a a corporate scientist who was less than satisfied with her employment conditions. She agreed to your impulsive request to abandon Hyde and join your rag-tag crew of vigilantes, and has officially joined Overwatch as its second non-agent staff member.

Arising from your dorm bed, you sit up and stretch, thinking that while this small little room is a bit cramped, it's still nice to have your own room. By now, you've had a chance to personalize the place, and you take a look around at the odds and ends you accumulated in your personal life that you've decorated the room with. It's not much, considering you used to have access to wealth and luxury beyond dreams. But it's something.

You've set up a few simple action figures on a corner display stand: Tracer, Mercy and Reinhardt arranged in battle formation, as well as a few Zaltron Legacy rangers in their colorful power suits. Behind them is a fluffy, cheerful-looking stuffed dog.

On your desk is a rack of comic books. Hard copies, which are rare in this day and age. They don't make Overwatch comics anymore, but you managed to find some old weatherbeaten copies of your favorites: Issue #48, Battle Inclination; the Tracerocity Special; and #207-212, the Mercy's Revenge Arc.

Next to the comics on your desk is a spherical golden age relic, which you've had for years and still have no idea what it does. Every scientist you've brought it to has been baffled, although they assure you it isn't leaking anything hazardous they can detect. So you kept it around. If you press this one part, another part lights up and goes "ping". And if you press over here, it opens up and spins around. It's useless, but you keep it around out of some strange attachment to the thing.

Yawning, you open your dorm door to head to the mess for breakfast and coffee. In the hallway, you run into Maeve, aka Dr. Maeve Carol, the scientist you aided -- or abducted, depending on your point of view. "I'm sure this is a bit overwhelming," you say to her after exchanging good-mornings.

"Whatever d'ye mean?" She speaks with a faint but pleasant Irish accent. "Being whisked off in the darkness of night by a band of rebels, leaving my old life behind forever?" She laughs, showing the comment is good-natured, but she does seem stressed out. "It's still rather surreal, I admit."

"Makes sense," you say. "I joined in a similar fashion, you know, a few months ago. A spur-of-the-moment thing. Took a while for it to really settle in. Back then it was just me, Tracer and Winston. We've already grown a lot since then. I hope you can be a part of what comes next."

"i'll do what I can," Maeve says.

"For now," you ask her. "What do you think about ..."

You have some regular food shipments coming in via drone airdrop, with a variety of food types. So your diet, while not rich, is at least much more varied than the early days when all you had to eat was nutrient paste, peanut butter, and bananas.

"What do you think about the Watchpoint?" you say. "It's still a bit run-down, but we're working on it. Up until just recently, about half of us were stuffed into the old air crew's quarters underneath the hangar deck, and the rest of us just bedded down on a cot wherever. You came just in time to get your own dorm room."

"It's a bit small, and some of the equipment is strangely archaic. But I'm sure I'll get used to it. The sunlight is nice, at least."

"How about Winston's lab?"

"From my initial, cursory inspection, his equipment seems quite modern ... if perhaps under less than optimal maintenance conditions and software updates."

"Well, maybe you can help him out with that. You've got more experience in up-to-date labs than he does. I'm hoping you can take on some of his and Mei's work when they're out helping me beat up Talon. Now," you say, arriving at the mess hall. "What should we eat for breakfast? I usually have coffee and eggs."

"Sounds all right to me," Maeve says.

You enter the mess hall together and get coffee and eggs courtesy of the drone chefs. "I've been thinking we should get them chef's hats," you tell her as you pick up your tray and scan the room. Tracer is waving enthusiastically with one hand and pointing to the two empty seats next to her with the other, so you join her. "Have you two have been introduced?" you ask. "Lena Oxton, test pilot and time traveller. Maeve Carrol, experimental physicist."

"Pleasta meetcha," Tracer says, enthusiastically shaking Maeve's hand.

"Likewise," Maeve says politely.

"We had a serious supply problem when I first arrived," you say. "I'm glad I can offer you some real food."

"Strewth," Tracer says. "Green soylent nutrient paste, and Winston's endless crates of peanut butter and bananas. I used to like bananas, but I hope I never see another one. Now we've got food via drone supply, so we can eat like regular folks again. Makes the old illegal vigilante thing a little more tolerable, y'know?" She takes a sip of her tea. "It ain't right for an Englishwoman to fight crime without her tea."

You notice Maeve seem to forget about her food, just looking around. "It's a lot to take in," you say in sympathy.

"It's fine," she says. "Honestly. It's nice to talk to people who don't have pre-programmed responses."

Tracer laughs. "Corporate culture a bit stifling, eh?"

You and Maeve glance at each other, then back at Tracer. "She means it literally," you tell her. "The office drones and security for Hyde get chipped."

"Chipped?"

"Cyberware control chip implant. Brain-machine interface. Overwrites their personality with pre-written corporate-approved dialogue and decision trees." You swirl around the black liquid in your coffee cup, thinking of the blank looks on those workers' faces. "A lot of the corps have started doing it. Much more convenient than dealing with all that pesky humanity and individual thought."

Tracer looks shocked. "I had no idea it was that bad inside."

"Most people don't," Maeve says, shrugging. "They keep it under wraps. Outside, the only thing people hear about is how great it is to work for the corps. How you live in a shining tower, get all your meals and clothes paid for, everything provided. They don't understand what you have to give up to get it."

>Maeve, I'm guessing you're not chipped or you wouldn't be here, right?

"Tracer, corporate culture is messed up. I could go into specifics, but ..." You think of some of the things you've seen. The people who have lost their humanity, piece by piece. Sometimes metaphorically, due to the insidious processes of thought control, and sometimes more literally, as the demand for cyberized employees increases. Sacrifices on the altar of progress and efficiency. You think of the shells those people can end up as. And you shake your head. "Just take my word for it."

"From what I've seen, you're right, so no argument here." Tracer pokes at her sausages, then looks back up, trying to figure out how to ask this casually. "Y'know, Seeker, I've noticed you seem to know a lot about what goes on in the corps. Details most of us don't know, like this chip stuff, and uh, security procedures and the like. Where did you pick this stuff up?" She laughs nervously. "Take an orientation course?"

Maeve doesn't say anything, but she's clearly curious as well.

You don't want to outright lie to them, but this really isn't the time to go into the whole thing about "My mother is one of the lead executives of Lucheng and probably one of the fifty most powerful people in the world" so instead you say ...

"My parents work for one," you say, a truthful admission, even if it leaves out certain details. "I grew up in that world. I was a quiet kid, and kept my eyes and ears open. Learned a lot ot things the public doesn't know about. I used to think I'd grow up to do the same thing as mom and dad, but after enough of that ..." You shrug. "Long story short, somehow I ended up here instead."

"Huh." Tracer takes a moment to think about that. "Well, damn. I never would've guessed our resident rogue was a corp boy. Explains a lot, really, when I think about it."

"Yeah, I still remember certain security code phrases and such, so that's how I could--"

"Nah, mate. I mean that explains why you're awkward as hell under that cool-guy exterior." Tracer reaches across the table to poke you lightly in the ribs, grinning.

"Whaaat?" You blush as you push her hand away. "No way, I -- I'm bad to the bone, all right?"

Maeve glances back and forth between the two of you, then sips her coffee instead of saying anything.

After breakfast, Tracer bids good-bye for now as she heads off to the training room for some morning wind sprints. Maeve asks you to accompany her to Winston's laboratory. You get about halfway there before she tugs at your sleeve and pulls you into the storage alcove across from the Forge.

"You're him, aren't you?" she asks quietly. "Hyde is a Lucheng subsidiary, and I hear things. You're just about the right age and appearance. You're Logan King, right?"

>I am. But you can't tell anyone.

"What about you?" you say, turning the question around to avoid answering it. "You're not just some random mid-ranker scientist, are you? For starters, you're clearly not chipped, or you've rewired yourself, or you wouldn't be here, making your own decisions. You were working on some kind of high-level program, or you wouldn't be taking orders from a manager one step down from VP. Are you some kind of scientist big-shot, or what?"

"You're just deflecting my question," she says.

"So are you," you point out.

The two of you stare at each other for a few tense moments without saying anything.

"All right," Maeve says, breaking it off and looking away in shame. "I'm sorry I asked. I should have realized it was a sensitive subject, or it would be out in the open. I -- I'm not always the best with people. They say I'm better at making reactors than friends."

"It's okay," you say. "You've got some competition for most socially awkward person on the base. Yours truly, for starters." You rub the back of your neck, embarassed. "Forget about it, all right? Let's head to the lab and get you set up. We don't need any experimental reactors built just yet, but there's a lot of things could use the help of an intelligent woman skilled with scientific computers, like yourself. We can use a human's help on cryptology, for starters, as an assistant to our primary codebreaker. Have you been introduced to Athena?"

"No, who's that?" asks Maeve, falling into step beside you.

"Oh, she's quite a lady," you say. "You'll be very interested to meet her."

You've only got one empty room free to build in right now, a convenient location for the Situation Room, placed between the briefing room and command center, out by the launchpad. The containment facility will have to wait a short time until your new engineers are able to excavate some extra space into the rock. (I won't penalize you since I forgot to add a note you only had 1 empty room left. However, future new rooms will require a one-time investment in an Excavator Drone beforehand.)

You enter Winston's laboratory, where the gorilla is humming to himself as he works on a refinement to his barrier shield projector. He rises to greet the two of you. Although polite, Maeve is still intimidated -- understandable, considering Winston's size and power, and of course the whole intelligent talking ape thing. You still feel that way yourself sometimes, despite having built a bond with him over the past few weeks.

Her anxiety disappears, however, when Winston asks for her thoughts on quantum entanglement and zero point squirt interaction. Her eyes light up, and she quickly launches into her detailed thoughts on the matter.

"Okay, while I'm glad to see you two have a quality topic of conversation, I need to talk to Maeve for a minute here to get her set up with her first project. You can be eggheads together after I'm gone, all right?"

You take Maeve to the computer banks in back, where she settles in and rapidly types a few sequences. "Interesting system. I don't understand how--"

"Good morning, Dr. Carrol," Athena says, her voice coming from the computer's speaker. "I am Athena, adjutant and quartermaster."

Maeve blinks and stares closely at the computer screen. "It can't be. Is that--?"

"Yep," you say. "As far as we know, we've got the world's only tame godmind on our side."

"I look forward to working with you," Athena says.

Maeve sits back in her chair and runs a hand through her hair. "This place is just full of surprises, isn't it?"

"We're just getting started," you say, grinning. "Wait until you meet our cyborg ninja." You lean over the secondary keyboard and punch in the commands to bring up the data you extracted yesterday from Hyde Global's Singapore tower. "Have you heard anything about something called "Project Fulgurite"?"

"Only rumors," she says. "Some kind of ultra-secret program."

"I've been chasing it for years, keep getting smoke and mirrors. But I might finally have a clue now." You highlight a certain section of code. "Athena can't break through it, but we both suspect this has something to do with Fulgurite. You're familiar with Hyde's encryption systems. Think you can help her crack it open?"

"I'll see what I can do, commander," Maeve says.

Is that the first time anyone has called you that? It feels ...

It's weird and a little frightening to be called "commander". You're twenty-three years old and have spent most of your adult life breaking into secure high-tech facilities. There are some skills you learn fast while doing that, but leadership and people skills aren't among them.

You consider letting it slide and allowing her to call you that, despite your ambivalence about it, but in the end you're not ready to take on that mantle, and say, "You can just call me Seeker."

"All right, then -- Seeker."

"Okay, good luck with the decryption. I'll look forward to your report."

You head out into the morning sun, climb up and take a seat on top of the stack of crates just outside the entrance to Winston's lab that never seems to get cleared. Pulling out your datapad, you open the interface Athena's designed for you to look over the potential funding allocations for the Watchpoint. You decide to invest in improved equipment for Torbjorn and Brigitte in the forge, a containment facility for enemy captives, a situation room to monitor the globe and keep track of things, and an upgrade and overhaul for the "command center" which right now is just a bunch of extra monitors put up on the walls of that big intimidating meeting room under the launchpad.

"It's time we got some staff around here," you say to Athena. "Brigitte has been on my case for someone to help her repair everyone's armor, and she's only going to get busier. We could also use some people who know how to handle themselves. Not to take on missions, necessarily, but just to keep things secure around the base. Do you know where we can find some personnel we can trust?"

"I have some ideas," Athena. "I will get back to you."

Finishing that up, you realize you've got the rest of the day free. No urgent missions or vital plans. Sure, Talon is plotting and Anubis is re-assembling and the corporations are doing god knows what, but today, at least, you can't do anything about that. So what would you like to do?

>Inspect the base, like a real commander would do.

>Socialize to bond with your teammates.

You decide to head to the training room for a while. You haven't properly taken advantage of it since it was built, and while you're getting plenty of weapon practice and exercise on missions, it's important to put in the time between them as well.

You ask Athena to put you through to Reinhardt on the base communication system. "Can you meet me in the training room, big guy? I could use your help."

"Vonderful!" Reinhardt's voice booms even over the comms. "I vill help you turn zat mush into muscle!"

"I guess wouldn't mind warming up with some PT, but that's not what I need your help for," you say. "I'll explain when I see you there."

You can't convince Reinhardt to hear any of it before 30 minutes of weight lifting.

Workout Soundtrack: David Hasselhoff -- Hooked on a Feeling

Through a combination of strict exhortations, inspiring war cries, and demonstrations of his own prowess, Reinhardt dredges the maximum effort out of you until your arms and legs feel like jelly. You're gasping and sweating by the end. He slaps you on the back, laughing. "A fine effort, my young friend! Perhaps someday you will be as strong as me!" He flexes his bicep which is probably larger than your head.

The changing room shower afterwards is incredibly awkward for someone as used to privacy as you, especially when it's alongside someone of Reinhardt's magnificence. But the hot water gets you cleaned off and focused. It feels like your head is cleared after all that. Maybe that's what Reinhardt had in mind.

"So," he rumbles. The two of you are sitting at the wide table in the one corner of the training room reserved for non-violent activity, dressed in Overwatch-issue blue and gold sweatpants and track jackets. "Vhat was it you needed my help for?"

"Well ... you've seen a lot of battles, right? You went through proper training to join the Crusaders. You're a proper warrior, so I'm guessing you've studied your military history."

Reinhardt nods, a cagy look in his one eye. "Balderich used to say that we must all be students of war."

"Well, I was wondering if you could help me out with that. I, uh --" You realize it's difficult to talk about your unofficial leadership position with Reinhardt, who has vastly more seniority than you, and really should be in charge of this little ragtag band, except for the small matter of his early onset dementia.

He seems to understand, though. "You have very little in the way of training, yes? Experience in sneaking, but not in war. I am used to teaching by example, in that great academy, the battlefield. But ... " He thinks it over, then nods. "I will teach you, yes. Or at least, I will try."

"I feel like I don't know what to do when we're fighting as a team," you confess. "We're supposed to be working together as a unit, but I only know how to run off on my own and try to deal with things myself. I get myself into a jam and Tracer or Winston or somebody has to bail me out. I need to figure out this whole "squad tactics" thing."

Reinhardt nods. "It can be difficult learning to work closely with others. What you must learn is that, on the battlefield, you are not merely one man. You are a part of a whole. Each part must fulfill its duty to the others for the whole to function. Remember that when you endanger yourself, you endanger your team. Not merely that they must put themselves in danger to aid you, but that you are not in position to aid them."

You can't help feeling like he's talking about you running off and being a hotshot. You groan and hold your head in your hands. "I know, I need to take being part of a team more seriously, or something."

You feel Reinhardt's heavy hand rest on your shoulder. "Fear not, my young friend. One must make mistakes and be wrong to in order to learn. The first step is to admit it." He smiles and raises his finger in caution. "Do not think that a heroic individual has no place in this fight. A valorous deed by one man can be the difference between success and defeat. For example, an impetuous rookie might charge in alone against the fearsome Reaper and a squad of Talon soldiers, and take them on single-handedly, and win, thereby saving Athena and perhaps Overwatch itself."

Your shame fades a little as you remember doing that, and laughing with the team as everyone watched your helmet-cam replay afterwards. A smile crosses your face. "That guy sounds crazy."

"Perhaps. It was likely to end in your demise, but it worked. Only time will tell you when you must work closely with your team and when you must rely only on yourself. For now, I can teach you about the techniques you can use when working alongside us."

Reinhardt keeps it basic for now, skipping over the initial history lesson besides a brief reference to his training academy in Germany and some historical guy called "Moltke the Elder." He starts grabbing nearby objects to use in his demonstration. "Imagine this water bottle is your enemy's fortification, and this towel represents a road or a river you must cross. This pen is an artillery battery ..."

Reinhardt gives you a basic rundown of how squads are composed with varying elements, fireteams of gunners and tanks backed with command and support elements. He introduces you to the idea of "bounded fire" in which one group of soldiers will advance to a new position while a second group provides support with covering fire, smoke grenades, and other techniques designed to keep the enemy's heads down. The second group then lays down fire to cover the first group's advance, a process which is repeated in a "leapfrog" pattern until the target position is reached. "It's sometimes referred to as "bounded overwatch", actually," he adds. He says that this assault phase alternates with a stage of entrenchment, where the squad fortifies and consolidates its position, treats wounds, replaces damaged equipment, and makes any other needed adjustments.

"interesting," you say, scratching your head as you look down at the latest diagram he's made with snack bars and shoelaces. "It sounds like it comes down to being aware of your teammates' position and intentions. Making sure you're close enough to somebody else that if something goes down, you can help them, or they can help you."

"Yes, this is one of the basic elements of tactics. It varies, of course. For someone like our Lena, spry chicken that she is, the defintion of "close enough" will be quite different. You see?"

"I think so."

You spend the rest of the afternoon with Reinhardt discussing small unit tactics and possible strike team compositions. Hopefully some of this will be useful in future missions.

You take out your datapad, open your streaming app, and tune into the livestream of D.Va, world renowed retro gamer champion and hero of the Korean front of the Siberian Omnic War. For a moment it crosses your mind if bullying a war hero is actually a productive hobby. Then the stream opens and you forget about that, because not only is it easy, it's hilarious.

Three-quarters of the screen is taken up by a video game. 16-Bit Hero, the ultimate retro twin-stick shooter, easy to learn, impossible to master. The player character, an armored space marine with a skull-marked helmet, stomps around in the center of the screen, blasting endless waves of aliens and robots.

In the bottom quarter, you see the camera view of D.Va as she plays the game. She's dressed in her meka plugsuit, but has a casual jacket on overtop. She's inside a military tent, sitting in a big cushy chair salvaged from a junkyard or ruin that looks ragged but comfortable, and is mashing buttons on a controller with a look of fierce concentration on her face.

Scrolling marquee text across the screen proclaims "Day off from the war! I get to play vidya!" The chatbox is slightly less chaotic and spammy than usual due to being limited to "premium followers" only at present.

You watch for a few moments like a regular viewer, just taking in the mood. D.Va. blows a pink bubblegum bubble and pops it loudly. "I love this game," she says. "For any new followers, this is where it all started, and I got good. This is where the Legend of D.Va began," she says, tongue-in-cheek, and gives the camera a wink. The chat fills with one of her custom emotes "Heroic D.Va". "Played a thousand hours of this bad boy right here when I was still practically in diapers. Then I found Starcraft right as the big retro tournament craze kicked in and, well, you know. I was kind of a big deal." She giggles.

All right, it's time for some bullying. Something as simple as a subscriber-only chat room isn't going to lock you out. You roll up your sleeves and begin. You take it easy on her to start with and just spam emotes. One is a girl with a foolish-looking expression "Ditz" -- you know D.Va hates that one in particular, so you make sure it shows up frequently. Half of the chat joins in with you, spamming the Ditz emote, while the other half tries to white knight as hard as they can.

"Shut uuuup!" whines D.Va, button mashing. "First I run out of flamethrower ammo and now this? What is my life? Why is that emote still allowed in my chat? Mods!"

The mods ban you, several of the other chatters who joined in, and the Ditz emote.

"Hmph! That showed him!" D.Va says with a smug smile.

You swiftly construct a large-sized version of Ditz out of several normal-sized emotes, and upload it through a backdoor into the streaming service's main database. You activate some of your prepared dummy accounts in D.Va's chat and start spamming the large-sized version of Ditz. The chat joins in with you in glee.

"MODS!!!" shrieks D.Va, and you fall back onto your bed laughing. "Stealer is that you?! I know that's you, you piece of shit!" You hear the sound effect for the player dying in 16-Bit Hero and D.Va scream of frustration and rage, and you laugh even harder.

That night you half-expect to be woken up by a red alert from a Talon attack or an Omnic uprising, and are pleasantly surprised the next morning to find that didn't happen. You need a good rest around here when you can, since you never know what to expect.

You groan as you realize your arms feel like noodles after weight lifting with Reinhardt yesterday. No pain, no gain, right?

In the mess hall at breakfast, you can barely lift your plate. Mercy notices your distress and offers to help. You sigh with relief as she massages your shoulders with expert fingers, your tension flowing away. A couple of the other agents give each other knowing glances, but you're not sure what that's about. Just the doctor helping out the recruit who's sore after training, right? No big deal.

After breakfast, everyone disperses with their own business, leaving you free to choose among the many tasks that demand your attention. It looks like another busy day as Overwatch's recruit, or commander, whichever you are.

The morning finds you scrolling through your datapad looking at Athena's list of candidates for engineering and security staff, men and women of every nationality, from all across the globe. "Where did you find these people?" you ask her.

"I placed an ad," Athena says.

"I'm not sure if you have a camera on me right now, but I'm rolling my eyes," you tell her.

"That is what I did, Seeker. Admittedly, the advertisement does not reveal the true nature of the job, or its location. It only appears to a selected few I have assessed with my personality analysis function to a fulfill certain quotient of expected loyalty of Overwatch."

"So it doesn't say who we are, and only shows up to people you expect to stay loyal."

"Correct. There are several other criteria. Suitability for the jobs you requested, of course. I have also sorted to prefer those without close family or attachments. Both to avoid suspicion when they go off-grid, and to prevent trauma in case of unfortunate incidents."

You think that impaired efficiency based on compassion is an awfully human trait for an AI. It might be insulting to phrase it that way, though, so you keep that observation to yourself.

The engineering candidates all look the same to you, and in the end you leave the choice in Torbjorn and Brigitte's hands -- Torbjorn's familiar with the pedigree of these engineering schools, and Brigitte will be the one actually ordering them around. Seems fair they decide.

The soldiers, on the other hand, will require some kind of squad leader. The agents will have authority, of course, but they shouldn't have to micromanage. If your soldier teams grow in size, you'll have to revisit how the hierarchy works here. But even if it's just for now, someone will have to be in charge in the first security team.

You decide on:
>A mercenary captain.
>Ex-corporate security.
>A veteran from the first Overwatch, years ago.
>A young talent with something to prove.
>Just make sure it's a cute girl.

"This person looks pretty good to head our initial security team," you say, highlighting your choice. "Squad leader on the first Overwatch, stayed until the official disbandment came down from the UN. Veteran of some dust-ups afterwards, then nothing for years. Tried corporate and mercenary work and it didn't take, I'm guessing. What do you think, Athena?"

"I trust your assessment of your fellow humans," Athena says. "I shall prepare the group dormitory."

"I hope they're all okay sleeping on bunk beds," you say, scrolling through the list to start selecting candidates for the rest of the security force. "It'll probably be a while before I can put dorm improvements on the priority list for base upgrades." You figure out who looks like they bring the right combination to the table of combat skill, fearlessness, and upstanding citizenship -- soldiers who can be bribed or turned will just turn out to be a liability. On the other hand, Talon's hacking virtuoso has demonstrated her skills before, so human guards might actually be more reliable than drones in this case.

You fire off a quick voice message to Brigitte telling her that you've finally allocated the funds she was asking for to engineering personnel, and that she and Torbjorn have their pick of who to hire from Athena's list of candidates.

After a quick lunch and refreshment, you head to the training room to call together some of your teammates and oversee an exercise you've had in mind. Everyone here has combat experience to some degree, especially the veterans of the first team. But they're also rusty, and while recalling your own individual skills is something you can do on your own, learning how to function as a team again is more difficult, and requires you to work together.

The tactic you had in mind to practice today is:

>Fast strike offense with the attackers and tanks.
>Teammate protection with the tanks and defenders
>Small team coordination with the attackers and defenders.

You have Athena send to the training room all the agents who Overwatch's agent classification system has tagged as either Attack or Defense. That's essentially everyone whose primary job is to carry a weapon and fight the enemy, as oppposed to the tanks and supports who shield and protect them as they do it.

Reinhardt is in charge of the exercise, of course, and has dragged along Torbjorn, who tried to refuse to participate, citing his need to supervise the Forge construction, although Brigitte assures you she has it under control. McCree and Genji are comparing their weapons, joking about something. Mei looks around nervously while trying to avoid eye contact, still ill at ease among these scarred and warlike combat veterans, while Hanzo merely looks bored. Bastion beeps and swivels hie eye back and forth, taking it all in.

Although Tracer is still on the wounded list and not cleared by Mercy to join in, she shows up to watch. Winston and Mercy both claim they have other pressing matters, and wish you good luck.

"All right, guys," you say, standing next to Reinhardt. "Today we're going to practice some stuff that Rein here has been telling me about. In the field, we often have to advance into hostile territory or cover multiple objectives, which means we need to stay mobile and cover as much ground as possible. It's great if we can all stay bunched up behind the tanks' shields in a ball of death, but more often than that, we'll need to split into smaller teams.

"So to do that and stay safe, we need to work on spreading out, but staying within range of each other to help one another. It depends on communication with and awareness of your teammates, so it'll take some practice with each other, which is why we're all here."

Reinhardt says the group will rotate through teams of one attacker and two defenders. For the first run, McCree is paired with Bastion and Mei, while Genji is backed up by Hanzo and Torbjorn. "Athena, vould you be so kind?"

"Certainly, Reinhardt." Several of the blank white floor panels rise up on pistons. They alter configuration and lock into place, creating an irregular pattern of vertical rectangles throughout the room. "Urban environment simulation in place."

McCree spins his revolver and grins at his two defenders. "Don't worry, fellas, just follow my lead." Mei nods nervously, while Bastion emits a series of beeps you recognize as an enthusiastic affirmative.

Genji bows to his squadmates. "Please take care of me." Hanzo stiffly bows back to him, a touching moment between brothers loudly interrupted by a metallic clanking and pounding as Torbjorn slams his turret down on the ground and strikes it repeatedly with his forge hammer.

You lean against a tall stack of crates that Tracer is sitting on top of. She looks down at you, kicking her legs in the air. "How come you're not in there, mate?"

"Oh, uh, I'm supervising. Actually, I can barely lift my sword after weights with the big guy yesterday," you confess.

The two of you watch your teammates go into action. The air fills with bullets, arrows, icicles, and shurikens. Reinhardt exhorts them and references Prussian generals. The training room's systems are fairly basic, but Athena gets the job done, sliding training drones and dummy targets into place to represent enemies and civilians.

The exercise goes well, as far as you can see. Reinhardt gives you an optimistic report at the end of it all. The team looks a little frustrated as they file off to the showers, but it's always difficult trying to make the transition from hotshot individual to team player, as you can personally attest to. Hopefully the practice will eventually result in an increase in coordination and squad tactics and give you an edge up on the many enemies you'll have to face soon.

That evening, you decide to:

You head online and start browsing the news. According the official internet, the world is moving along peacefully. Things are much like they were just after Overwatch was disbanded. Nothing about the Siberian War or Talon's resurgence, and definitely nothing about the rapidly expanding sphere of control the megacorps are spreading across the globe.

After a quick skim of the official accounts, you head to the darkweb, the places online outside of corporate control and ideological lockdown, where you can find free thinkers of every stripe. That can be both good and bad, you think, scrolling past one notorious site where a fat man in a suit is screaming into his microphone about chemicals in the water supply. "They turned the friggin' frogs gay!"

The talk about Overwatch continues to heat up. At this point, although official journalism is still blacked out, there's enough evidence from civilian photos, video, and eyewitness accounts, that most darkweb commenters are convinced that the return is real. The question now is what people think about it.
"Overwatch was always a tool for the U.N. to maintain the status quo," writes one user, and adds, "They're probably working for Vishkar and Volskaya now to do the same."
"Who else is going to stand up for us?" writes another. "Los Muertes burned down my uncle's house and Lumerico doesn't care, will Overwatch help?"
"Mercy and Tracer are cute! CUTE!!!"
"I don't trust them."
"The world is fucked, there's nothing they can do."
"Somebody has to stop Talon."
"We need them."
"We're going to lose in Siberia without them."
"I believe in you, Overwatch."
"OVERWATCH IS BANNED GET OUT REEEE---"

It's a mix of distrust, derision, and desperate hope.

In need of something more cheerful after that, you decide to contact everybody's frog-themed DJ, Lucio: musician, freedom fighter, and low-key Overwatch recruit. He's currently on tour in Numbani, Africa, preaching the message of hope and peace along with sick beats to an audience of millions.

You call him up on video, and he answers after several rings, looking sweaty and dishevelled. "Hey, Seeker! Just finished a show. Whoo! That crowd was hyyype!" You can hear his fans still chanting his name on your comm.

"Sounds like the tour is going well."

"You know it, man! My tunes are blowing up! I'm on top of a bunch of charts, I can't even remember them all. I'm getting offers for endorsements, videos, all kinds of things. Even bigger than the music, though, is the word I'm spreading. I'm telling everyone about coming together, believing in one another, having each other's backs in these hard times. And they're all about it. The people are ready for positivity."

"Good to hear," you say. "With all this shit with Talon and the second Omnic War going on, they need something to believe in."

"Hey man, when it's dark, that when a light shines out the brightest. Right now, they've just got me, a guy who plays music. But I'm getting them ready to believe in something bigger. You."

"You mean Overwatch."

Lucio grins. "If you want to put it that way, sure."

So the hopes of the entire world will soon rest on the shoulders of the team that, somehow, has a 23-year-old thief and former executive scion unofficially calling the shots. You. Which means--

Oh, man.

"Oh, damn." Lucio's door is rattling, and you hear a gaggle of groupies outside giggling and calling his name. "Uh, I gotta go, pal. Keep holdin' it down, all right?"

"Will do. Enjoy yourself," you say, smiling, and end the call.

The next day, after a long morning mediating disputes, one between Torbjorn and Athena on the specifics of expanding the forge area, and another between Winston and Mercy over allocation of lab resources, you decide you deserve a few hours off from all this commander business. You take your lunch over to the lounge, where you engage in some equally important activiates: cultural research and social bonding.

"Wait, so the whole time this guy was his father?" you ask, watching a black-armored figure reach out to his son, who was just wounded in their duel with laser swords.

"Uh-huh," Tracer says, and throws another handful of popcorn in her mouth. She's curled up in the lounge chair next to you with a huge bowl of popcorn in her lap, wearing a gold Overwatch track jacket that's a few sizes too big for her. "Really blows yer mind, huh?" she says while chewing.

"So they're both space wizards. Runs in the family, I guess."

"Yeah, the black guy is an evil space wizard, and the kid is a good one. That old guy in the first movie taught him, remember?" Tracer grins. "Can't believe you ain't ever seen these movies."

You think back to your childhood in those sterile apartments, the regimented days of lessons and tests, the strict information controls. "Yeah, I missed out on them somehow. I'm just glad to watch them now." You reach over to Tracer's popcorn bowl and grab a handful for yourself, still watching the movie. "Oh, and here the space princess is saving the main guy. That's nice."

"Hehe, yeah. Even back in the 1970s, sometimes a princess had to rescue the hero." She glances at you, then looks away, embarassed. "You already saved me, so uh, m-maybe I can return the favor sometime."

"Hey, that's just what partners do. Princess." You grin at Tracer and give her the finger guns,

She giggles. "You're a real doofus, y'know?"

"Yeah, I know." You watch the movie for a moment, then say, "If that does happen, though. When the time comes, I'll appreciate it. You can carry me bridal style, just like I did for you." You think it over. "One way you could improve things would be to pick up some food. That way, when I come to, I've got something to eat."

Tracer throws a popcorn kernel at you. "Sure, I'll just pop over to the Chinese place and grab some noodles while I'm running for our lives from Talon or Anubis or whoever. No problem. Should I get a spring roll as well while I'm at it?"

"Of course." Something occurs to you. "Can you blink while carrying another person?"

"I did once," she says. "I ran through a few tests back in the early days. Most of the time I'd zip forward and leave them behind, but one time I pulled it off. Not really sure what I did differently."

"What about rewind?"

"Ehhh ..." She shakes her head. "That one didn't go so well. He survived, in the end. But I can't recommend it."

"I see." You mentally scratch out "rewind with Tracer" on your list of things to try.

You feel something strange, and realize the ground is shaking under your feet. The chair moves under you, and the suspended ceiling light sways. Glasses shatter as they fall off the wall behind the bar. Looking at Tracer, you see a startled look on her face as her own chair bucks underneath her.

The shaking passes. Carefully you stand up, testing the ground, something normally so foundational that the idea of it shaking, going out of control, is hard to believe even after it just happened. You and Tracer look at each other.

"Was that--?" she asks you.

"Maybe," you say. "It might be over, but aftershocks are a thing, so be careful, and don't make any--"

The door to the lounge slams open. Mercy stands there, a grim look on her face. "Turn on the news," she demands. Not about to argue with that, you switch to one of the main corporate news networks.

The news anchor's usual veneer has been dropped for real shock and concern, and on the live video feed beside him, you see something awful: a mountain erupting in flame. Lava spews from the peak of a vast mountain high above a jungle. The marquee text reads, "Kilimanjaro Erupts, Tourists Endangered." The camera view switches to a large party of tourists, human and Omnic alike, panicked and fleeing on foot, their vehicles trapped or broken down.

"We have to go," Mercy insists. "Myself, five others, and the Orca. Immediately." She's keeping herself under control, but barely. "Please, Seeker. We have to help them."

The smoke cloud from the eruption is already visible before you're halfway to Tanzania, a dark grey plume of ash and smog spewing forth into the sky. You watch the cloud rise into the sky through the cockpit window of the Aurora, trying not to look at the video screen nearby showing you the live feed from the news helicopters, and the crowd of people desperately fleeing from the volcano.

Kilimanjaro is the world's heighest free-standing mountain, not part of a mountain range, but a single vast, gradually sloped peak that slowly climbs until it towers far above the Tanzanian jungle. Bright red magma flies from the mountain's peak in sprays and gouts of fireballs, the fiery liquid crashing to the ground and forming a massive flow of lava that slowly but inevitably flows down the mountain's side.

You check the video feed from the main passenger compartment of the Aurora, behind you. The team has tension written all over them. You try to think of something funny to break the ice, but it doesn't feel like a situation for jokes.

As you approach the mountain above the jungle, you can see among the trees below a huge, panicked crowd of tourists and local guides, fleeing from the mountain of fire. The roads is blocked in multiple places by disabled vehicles and fallen trees. Some have struck out into the jungle, to find themselves blocked by swamps and rivers. You approach the main jam of civilian traffic, a three-way car crash on a bridge spanning a mighty river.

You call over the comms, "Okay, we're getting close. Rescue team one, get ready." Winston and Mercy get up and head to the hatch door. You slow down, taking the Aurora over the . Opening the hatch door, a fierce wind whistles inside the aircraft. You see Winston shrink back a little. "Oh dear," he mutters. "It's been a while."

Athena counts down a timer for you, marking your position and velocity on a map, and at zero seconds, you call "Drop!" Without hesitation, Winston step out the open hatchway and fires his jump jets, streaking off into the air, letting out a cry somewhere in between enthusiasm and fear. Mercy follows him, stepping out into empty space. On your video screen showing underneath the aircraft, you see her turn and wave to the aircraft as her Valkyrie suit's wings activate, glowing gold. She flies off after Winston. The ape will help to clear blockages from civilian traffic with his massive strength, while Mercy tends to the wounded.

Flying to the rear end of the fleeing crowd, you bring the Aurora in to hover just off the ground to drop off Reinhardt, whose knees aren't what they used to be, and Hanzo. The archer immediately fires off a sonic arrow, searching for anyone who might be trapped and hidden, while Reinhardt charges off to the rearmost stragglers to protect them from errant lava bursts with his shield.

This will be the last straw in Overwatch's secrecy, you think, taking the Aurora back up. This event will be all over the live news. There's no way they can hide and censor every appearance of Mercy, Reinhardt and Winston, all highly recognizeable celebrities from the first Overwatch. One way or another, after today, it'll be out in the open.

You give control of the Aurora over to Athena and head down to the passenger area. It's just you and Mei now. She bolts up out of her seat when she sees you descend the stairs. She's somewhere in between terrified and determined. "O-okay. Let's get suited up."

She opens an equipment closet in the back of the Aurora and drags out two heavy-duty silver hazmat suits. Mei takes off her parka and starts to get one on. You take off your helmet and jacket and start to do the same.

"I'm glad you're coming with me," Mei says. She struggles to work her ample proportions into one of the tighter sections of the hazmat suit. "I wouldn't want to head out there alone," she confesses.

"Me neither," you say, and add:

"We can, but we'd just make it worse. That magma wants to go somewhere," Mei says, sliding her hands into the suit's gloves. "Right now it's flowing out the top of that mountain like water out of a hose. If we plugged it, we'd stop it for a little while, but when it finally burst it would be even worse than it is now."

"Then what the hell are we doing out there?" you ask her, donning your boxy helmet with its clear face-shield. "Why are we plunging into a literal hot zone if we can't stop it?"

"We can't stop it, but we can slow it down and redirect it," Mei tells you. "We can give those civilians extra time to escape and minimize damage to the natural environment." You honestly hadn't even given a thought for the animals and trees that will get caught up in all this, but you guess that's just who Mei is. It's good to have someone on the team with those concerns.

You and Mei zip one other up from behind, and she quickly coaches you through a safety check on each other. "You've worn this type of suit before, right?" you ask her.

"Not exactly," she says. "Volcanos are kind of the opposite of what I do. But um, I'm sure all the basics are the same. We'll be fine!"

"Great."

Athena pings in your ear. "This is as close as I can take the Aurora. Descending."

The Aurora lowers over a wide stretch of black basalt nearby the lava flow, a river of spitting fire. Mei waddles in the ungaily hazmat suit to the open hatch and hops the few feet down. You struggle after her, carrying a heavy machine shaped like a jackhammer. "What the hell is thing, anyway? And why am I carrying it instead of Winston?"

"It's called a cryospike," she says. "It's my own invention. And Winston is busy trying to push cars and trees out of the civilians' way."

"All right," you says, your arms already starting to get weary. "Geez, I need to work out with Reinhardt more if I'm going to be carrying stuff like -- oh, fuck!" A fireball is descending in a flaming arc, and you realize it's about to smash into your position. "Mei, look out!"

Protecting Mei and the cryospike with 9-1-6. Writing.

Every instinct in you urges you to throw the cryospike to one side, but you know that, whatever it is, Mei told you that the safety of those civilians could depend on it. So you take the extra moment to gently lay it down, then rush to Mei. She's backing away from the oncoming fireball, but stumbles over a jutting edge of rock and starts to fall. You reach her just in time to grab her and swing her around, placing yourself between her and the fireball as it splashes to the ground. Heat sears your back even through the advanced hazmat material. A cry of pain escapes you as you stagger and fall to one knee.

A second fireball descends. Mei manages to get her endothermic blaster ready, cranks a switch on the side, and pulls the trigger. "起来吧!" she shouts. You'd heard from Winston about how she could summon walls of solid ice with that gun, although seeing a huge ten-foot sheet of ice materialize straight in front of you for the first time is a bizarre sight.

The fireball crashes into the ground by the ice wall. The wall is scattered by the fiery splash in a great cloud of ice shards and hissing water vapor, but still protects you from the brunt.

Mei gets to her feet and takes your arm, helping you up. Your back radiates pain, scorched badly, but you can't think about that right now. Looking over the cryospike, you see the display screen is cracked and damaged, the display fizzing and resizing repeatedly, but all you can do is hope the machine is still functional. You try to pick it up again, but can't lift it properly until Mei takes the other end. Together, the two of you stumble closer to the mountain, which seems to be spewing more flame and smoke every time you look at it.

Mei consults several times on some kind of scanner she's brought along. Eventually she stops and points down. Nodding, you jam the machine's spike into the ground at the spot she indicated, and press the switch. The cryospike activates its drill and bracing legs, securing itself to the rock around it.

Mei dials in an activation sequence, and the core of the machine lights up with an ice-blue glow. "It just needs to align and charge up," she says. "One minute."

"Oh, no problem," you say, grimacing as the pain in your back flares. "I'll just find a bar and grab some mai tais. Suits the volcano ambience nicely, right? Maybe some-- wait, hold on." Athena is pinging you, her icon flaring on your HUD. "What's up, Athena?"

"Priority transmission from the Watchpoint," she says. "Incoming."

Through static and interference, you hear McCree's voice urgently calling. "--hear me, fellas? Rein, Angie, kid, pick up!"

"I'm here, McCree," you say. "What's going on?"

"Those damn Talon rats is what," he says, his frustration and anger audible even over the poor quality transmission. "They're hittin' a city in India right as we speak."

"They had to choose now," you say, realizing as you say it that it must be on purpose. Talon realized just what you'd do when that volcano went off, and seized on the opportunity.

"Disgusting," you hear Reinhardt say. "Talon continues their pursuit of the depths of cowardice."

"What are they doing?" you ask McCree.

"The Junkers are blowin' shit up, doin' what they do. Talon soldiers are runnin' around. They've got hostages. Not sure what else is goin' on, the news report are confused. But it ain't good, I'll tell ya that much."

Mercy says, "We can't abandon these people here. They still need us."

"I hear ya, sister," McCree says. "But the city cops ain't up for this on their own, and Helix Security ain't got the greatest record at hostage rescue. Success rate, sure. Hostage survival, not so much."

You mute your comms for a moment and scream obscenities as loud as you can at the flame-spewing mountain. Mei looks at you from behind her faceplate with horror at your language. She can probably hear you.

"Okay," you say, reactivating your comms. "Here's what we're going to do."

For the 5 agents at the Watchpoint:

>Send everyone available. We can't let Talon get away with this.
>Just send 2 or 3 agents. Bolster the locals' defenses, but don't leave the base open.
>I can't risk sending in a team without tanks or a healer.

For the 6 agents at Kilimajaro:

Torbjorn is better off staying in the base in case of a small attack, while Tracer is still injured and Bastion is a PR nightmare.

Sending Seeker while injured could be a problem without Mercy, and she needs to stay here.

"I'm kind of in the middle of something here," you say, looking down at the cryospike's malfunctioning display screen. "Aurora can't reach us. Hanzo, Rein, what's your status?"

"Reinhardt is helping the last main group," Hanzo's voice is calm, like he's having an ordinary day and not facing down nature's terrifying wrath and thousand-foot-high plumes of fire and ash. "I am searching for stragglers."

"You heard McCree's transmission? I need you two to go to India. I'm sending him and your brother in the Aurora. Athena will swing around in the Orca and pick you up. Meet them there, do what you can to bolster the Indian defence forces against the Talon attack."

"One moment," Hanzo says.

Athena shows you the view from Reinhardt's helmet cam, ushering away a group of scared but thankful citizens, both human and Omnics. "We will be ready shortly, Seeker," he tells you.

Reinhardt turns around, looking for something. Athena highlights Hanzo on Reinhardt's HUD: the archer is rapidly scaling a huge tree. Perched on a branch about halfway up you see a small child, a boy about 8 years old, crying. He must have climbed the tree, hoping it would protect him from the oncoming lava flow. Hanzo arrives at his branch and says something to him. The boy nods, then climbs on his back. Hanzo descends the tree as quickly and effortlessly as he ascended it. "Confirmed," he says over the comms.

You switch back over to the long-range transmission. "McCree, take Genji and head to India. Athena can pilot the Aurora well enough now to get you there. Hanzo and Reinhardt will meet you when you arrive."

"What about Tracer and the bot?" he asks.

"Tracer's injured, and someone needs to stay behind to defend the base. Think about it -- how do we know that this is all Talon is planning? What if this is all a big ruse to attack the Watchpoint? I know it's a lot to put on Bastion's shoulders, but I think he's up for it. He's come through for us every time so far." That's only if it's a smaller attack, of course. If Talon attacks with major force, there's no way Bastion and an injured Tracer can hold on their own. You make a mental note that maybe automated defenses should be higher on your funding priority list.

"Sounds good to me, kid. Me and Genji will get movin' right away."

"Good luck," you say.

You cut your mic just in time to let out a cry of pain as your back flares up.

"Are you all right?" Mei asks with concern. "The back of your suit is--"

"I'm fine," you lie. "Keep going."

"O-okay, if you say so." She's hammering some kind of smaller spike into the ground. When she's satisfied it's deep enough, she twists the cap, and part of the stake lights up with the same blue energy as the cryospike. "Just hold on."

Mei rushes to set up two more of these glowing stakes, forming a triangle with the cryospike in the center. "Okay. Set that dial to maximum, and when I give you the signal, hit the button on the right." She watches her geological scanner intently, raising her other hand. The cryospike whirs and hums as its interior comes to life. The air begins to stir around you, forming strange powerful currents as cold air seeps out from the device and interacts with the heat rising from the lava flow. Mei chops her hand down. "Now!"

You hit the button, and it pings. The central spike jammed into the ground roars to life. The top of the device opens up and a blast of hot air shoots upward.

Above you, the vertical airstream shoves aside the overhanging black clouds in a narrow cone straight up. You catch a glimpse of blue sky, like you're standing in the eye of a hurricane, a vortex of clean air among the smog and ash.

Below you, the basalt cracks, and you see ice crystals forming. The nearest magma flows begin to cool, fading from red-hot liquid to a slow, gelatinous black mass, and then to hard stone. The freezing effect spreads out in three directions, guided by the smaller spikes.

"If I've calculated this right," Mei says, "The subterranean barrier will temporarily redirect the lava flow away from this side of the mountain, and lower the VE -- that's, um, volcanic explosivity. Geology isn't my speciality, but um, fingers crossed, right?" She goes to adjust her glasses, but her hand bumps into the faceplate of her hazmat suit. She smiles, embarassed.

"I guess we'll find out soon enough," you say.

You're about to call for the Orca and medical evac, but then remember that you told Hanzo and Reinhardt to take it to India. You realize you've got a long walk ahead of you down the slope of Kilimanjaro in a bulky hazmat suit and let out a sigh.

"I guess we'd better start walking," Mei says, looking down the vast hillside, realizing the same thing. "Are you all right to walk?"

"Sure. I said I'm fine." You take one step and your knees buckle. Mei catches you before you fall, helping you back to your feet and supporting you as you find your balance again. She's surprisingly strong, you realize. "All right, I could use some help here," you admit.

Mei gets your arm over her shoulders and takes some of your weight on herself, an awkward maneuver in the bulky hazmat suits, but she pulls it off. "Everything okay? Let's go."

The two of you start walking, slow but steady, away from the cryospike and the spreading triad of ice barriers. Above, the peak of the mountain continues to spew fire and ash, but the main lava flow is diverting away from you, and the civilian traffic below. You don't have your helmet's magnifier to see that far, but you hope everyone is all right down there, and Reinhardt and the others got everyone far away enough that your efforts will pay off.

Something occurs to you, and you twist around to look at the machine embedded in the black rock. "We're leaving your invention behind."

"It's all right," Mei says, continuing forward. "I'll make a new one."

Yes, he is. It's tough to keep track of all the agents sometimes. Having both him and Bastion as defenders will be solid. Who knows? Maybe they'll have a bonding experience while alone in the Watchpoint.
