Previously on Reckoning Quest...

The Hearth River runs red, driving Hearthspring into paranoia over ill omens and things that roam in the night. You and your friends have decided to follow the rangers upstream, determined to find answers.

Following your instincts, you walk closer to the doe’s remains, the pungent stench of decaying flesh and shit baking in the sun for Vaul knows how long getting stronger as you approach. As you get closer you start to see just how infested the corpse is with maggots, fungus and disease. There’s no way you’re going to subject yourself to rooting around that thing with your bare hands and face so close to it, you’ll probably get extremely sick.

You walk back to the edge of the forest where the smell isn’t so bad and grab a stick to help you investigate. This time, before you approach the corpse, you take in a deep breath, holding it for as long as you can. You’re not breathing in, but you can feel the air grow hotter and thicker as you get closer, standing as far away as you possibly can whilst being able to touch it with the stick.

Sam and Theo watch in disgust as you push the skin and fur back with the stick to reveal the mass of squirming maggots underneath. Immediately a cocktail of hot, putrid gas trapped within the corpse hits your face, making your eyes water profusely. You persevere though, forcing the entrails aside with your stick, trying to identify each individual organ through the mess of maggots.

You can only hold your breath for so long, and eventually you can’t stop yourself from exhaling, your body instinctively taking in a deep breath. You gag deeply straight away, taking every drop of your willpower not to vomit. You root around frantically, continuing to push the animal’s innards out. Most of it is too mangled or foreign to recognise, and your knowledge of anatomy isn’t very developed, but you know what you’re looking for, and after fully gutting the animal you know for certain it isn’t there.

You walk over to Theo and Sam, who have long since walked further upstream to get away from the awful smell. “I had a look, and couldn’t find it. The heart. It’s missing.”

Sam eyes go a bit wider, clearly a bit spooked. “…What the fuck. Everything else was there though?”

You respond. “Apart from all the pieces that’d been thrown around; Yeah, I think pretty much everything was there except the heart.”

Theo’s mouth is pressed into a flat line, trying to remain stoic. “This doesn’t make sense. At all. This doe’s been practically ripped open, half if its innards thrown around everywhere in a mess, and now you tell me its heart is missing? This is bloody insane…”

Theo pauses and thinks for a bit, frowning slightly as he continues. “There’s no animal I know of or read about that’d do this. Maybe insane Barcadan cannibals would do something this deranged, but other than that I’m stumped. And whatever this thing is, why would it take the heart?”

At the mention of cannibals Sam’s eyes go even wider. “C-cannibals? Y-you think there’s fucking cannibals running around, causing all this insane shit? You got to be fucking kidding me…”

Theo cuts Sam off. “No, that’s preposterous tha-“

Sam raises his eye brows, daring Theo to go down the logical route. “Well, I don’t think there’s cannibals running around the forest. I’d only read about it briefly in a book, where this one Barcadan tribe would eat their enemies during war time. They do some crazy shit, but you’d imagine they’d be killing humans and eating them instead, not leaving mangled, uneaten animals lying around.”
You let the two speculate, deciding to remain silent about what you may know. Letting them know about what really might be out there wouldn’t solve anything. In fact, it’d probably be detrimental. Telling them doesn’t answer any of the questions that you all have, and if anything will make the others even more paranoid and frightened then they are now.
“We should probably get a move on, rangers might set a shitty pace but if we stay here all day we’re gonna fall behind.”

Theo, deep in thought, nods, whilst Sam pipes up, a new fire in his eye. “Aye. Best be keep our eyes extra peeled as well, now that we know something’s definitely out there.”

You continue following the ranger’s tracks upstream, stopping for a quick lunch of pickled cucumber, cabbage and smoked ham sandwiches. As the day goes on, the sky begins to get overcast, and you’re eventually treated to a light shower in the late afternoon, washing some of the grime and sweat of the last day away. The rain cools things down a bit, leaving a nice light fog that eases the last stretch of the day’s trek.

The sun is just beginning to set when you hit the bend in the river, the ranger’s tracks diverging into the forest, planning to cut across the woods en route to the lake instead of following the Hearth all the way upstream. You push the pace, wanting to catch up to the rangers before proper nightfall, lest you move at a snail’s pace trying not to make any noise in the dark.

As the night wears on, the fog gets thicker, making it harder to follow the ranger’s tracks in the woods. Luckily it doesn’t take long until you glimpse soft, orange light through the trees, revealing the rangers camp.

Something’s different though, the rowdy conversations and merriment of last night’s camp replaced with silence. Though you can make out the flickering light of the fire through the trees, the fog obscures the rest of your vision.

Man, really slow day today...

Gonna call it a night, but should be able to knock out a few posts tomorrow if we actually get some players. I'll post on twitter when I start up again.

In the mean time keep voting, and I'll lead with whatever wins tomorrow.

All 3 for CURIOSITY

Gonna need 3d10 +2 (Woodsman) vs DC 16 [Base 15, +1 (???)]

I know that I'm running at a pretty bad time for North American players, but I feel like we're not really getting much activity at all... I know I am getting players, but 3 votes in 17 hours is pretty brutal.

Anons, is there anything I can improve on? I think my writing is pretty shoddy, especially dialogue, and I'm trying to work on it. I promise things will be getting interesting soon, just need to keep going.

Cheers to everyone that is taking part though, and I hope you're enjoying things so far!

You look at Theo and Sam, all of you registering the bad vibes. Something isn’t right, and the fact that something’s happened to the rangers, especially after seeing that corpse, is way too ominous to ignore.

Reading one another’s intentions, you all drop into a crouch and move forward slowly. You take it slow, sticking to the shadows and being careful not to crunch anything underfoot.

You and Sam have no trouble sneaking through the forest, having plenty of experience with being in places you shouldn’t be. Theo, on the other hand, is a lot clumsier and struggles to keep up.

He mutters under his breath, almost tripping on a root. “For Vaul’s sake, this fog is so fuc-“

Sam quickly brings his finger to Theo’s mouth, shutting him up. For a moment you stay very still, then you hear it as well.

Technically, you don’t hear anything. The forest is dead silent, the absence of insects buzzing and crickets chirping putting you on high alert. Something’s disturbing the forest, and whatever it is, it’s close.

You grab Sam and Theo by their arms, and slowly pull them back into the safety of the foliage and shadow. The fog is a double-edged sword; You’re having a hard time seeing more than 2 metres in front of you, but anything that’s looking for you is going to have a hard time as well.

After what feels like an eternity waiting you see a tall, humanoid silhouette in the fog, your stomach doing somersaults as you wait for the beast to reveal itself.

From the fog emerges Captain Odrik, eyes scanning the forest like a hawk. All of you stay perfectly still, none of you daring to even breathe. You watch his eyes quickly brush over brush where you hide, not registering anything. The man’s on high alert, and he’s more intent on looking for something that’s moving through the fog rather than someone hiding in plain sight.

A moment later two other rangers also emerge from the fog, both trying to avoid looking skittish in front of their captain. It’s obvious that they’re all on edge, the Captain’s face set in a stone mask whilst one of the rangers grips his sword so hard that his knuckles go white.

The captain stands there listening for a moment longer, the other two rangers looking to him to lead. Convinced there’s nothing around, the captain walks into the night, the two younger rangers trailing him.

You wait until you’re certain he’s gone, all of you letting out breath that you didn’t even realise you’d been holding. Slipping out of the brush, you point towards the warm, orange glow within the fog, signalling your friends to keep moving forward.

You hear the rangers before you can properly see them, not exactly whispering but keeping the conversation in a hushed tone.

“-king crazy, there’s no way I’m following Odrik up there. There’ll be none of us left to even fight this thing by the time we get up there anyway. We should head back, evacuate the townsfolk to Boedell, and call in some paladins from the capital to handle this shit. ”

Another ranger pipes up, his voice a low growl. “You fucking idiot. Where’s everyone going to live in Boedell? Think they can afford a room at the inn? We haven’t even begun harvest yet, and trade season’s almost starting. No one has any fucking money! We’ll be lucky if there’s still Hearthspring folk kicking around by winter.”

You hear the ranger spit, then continue. “And to call in the paladins, that’s rich. They’d never fucking come, not to some tiny, backwater village like Hearthspring. We might be in Camewell, but they aren’t our people. Those families, down the river, they’re our people. Stop being such a fucking coward, do your job and protect them.”

You a hear a chorus of “aye’s” from some of the others.

(cont)
>>
>>1797579
The first ranger retorts. “Bah. Trying to live another day doesn’t make me no coward. Did you see what happened to Callum and Brendon? You’ve got a fucking death wish, and Vaul damn me if I’m going to have any part of it.”

You hear the crash of a few things knocked over and the crunch of sticks and leaves as something large falls to the ground.

The other rangers voice cuts through the fog, coated in malice. “No my friend, it is you who has a death wish. I’ll slit your throat before you desert, you spineless craven. You think you’re safe to talk about these things because the captain isn’t here? You’re dead mistaken. Any more talk of desertion, from anyone, and we’ll leave you out the woods. I’m sure you’d make a nice snack.”

And with that, the conversation is ceased, and all you hear is the crackle of the fire, occasionally hearing things being shuffled around as rangers go through their packs. The uneasiness in the air is almost tangible, and the heated altercation between the two rangers has got your little group on edge as well. Sure that you’ve heard all that you need, you set off to find a place nearby to start your own camp.

Sam begins once you’re out of earshot. “What the fuck’s going on over there? Talking about desertion? They’ve been rattled hard.”

You bring your finger to your lips. “Don’t be so loud, there could be ranger patrols, or worse, anywhere.”

“I think something’s happened to a few of them, probably butchered the same way those animals were sounds like. It must be pretty fucking bad if they’re talking about desertion.”

Theo interjects. “I think they’re being hunted. By whatever messed up that doe. Those men, with the Captain, they were shit scared even being out there in the forest in such a small group.”

Sam looks at Theo sceptically. “You saying we should be scared? Same amount of rangers in that patrol as us right now.”

You all pause, properly processing what Sam said. You now definitely know there’s something out there, ripping corpses apart and picking off grown men, and you’re out here, in deep wilderness, on a dark, foggy night completely unarmed.

You’ve come far, but each of you is thinking the same thing. You’re in an unquestionably dangerous situation, with no way to defend yourselves. Do you turn yourself into the rangers?

You gulp. “Probably best we don’t stay on the ground tonight. It’s safer if we climb one of these trees and get nestled in the branches. Will keep us hidden better.”

Sam and Theo both nod in agreement.

For now, you rest your legs and fix up dinner in the dark. Pickled cucumber and tomato, smoked ham and goat’s cheese spread over the bread and made into sandwiches isn’t actually too bad of a feed.

Theo pipes up first. “So… We hit the bend in the river today. If we keep this pace, we should hit the Lake in time for nightfall tomorrow.”

You respond. “Yeah, assuming nothing happens between then and now.”

Sam interjects confidently. “Come on guys, don’t be so fucking gloomy. Things are just getting interesting!”

You and Theo look at Sam, growing weary of his short sightedness. You answer back hotly. “Sam, come on. This isn’t a fucking game. You saw that doe corpse, and now two rangers are dead, with others talking about deserting.”

Your words give Sam pause, and you continue. “If that thing finds us, we die. Simple as that.”

Sam, uncertain, presses you. “So? Like you said, I saw those doe remains. No shit we’re in deep, but we’re here and there’s no point getting all hung up and gloomy about how fucked we possibly are. If you wanna be so defeatist, go run to the rangers. Besides I got my staff, I’ll sl-”

You come in hot. “That thing catches you, you’re dead. If it catches us, we’re dead. It killed two rangers who were fully armed for Vaul’s sake! You are pretty good with that staff, I’ll give you that, but even you’re not retarded enough to think you could even beat a ranger one on one, let alone the thing that killed two of them.”

Sam, defeated, huffs. “What the fuck do we do then? Bottom line is that we’re out here, and that things is running around in the night. Should we turn ourselves in?”

You and Theo answer at the same time.

“Yes!”
“No.”

Theo looks at you bemused. “Why not?! You just said yourself how in over our heads we are!”

You explain yourself. “No I didn’t, I was just wanted to drill in how dangerous this predicament is. If we want to survive and make it to the lake, like we set out to do, we can’t be fucking around. No games, this is the real deal and we gotta treat it that way. Besides, we all knew the hazards and accepted them regardless.”

Both of your friends weigh up your words over the remainder of dinner, all of you having a lot to think about. Once you’re all finished you grab your packs and climb a tree each, no point keeping watch in the dense fog.

Unlike last night you fall asleep straight away, your mind lulled into a weird state of calm by the fact that you’re going to have to be on your toes tomorrow.

You open your eyes, expecting to see the canopy of the leaves above, instead looking into infinite black.

You turn around startled, coming face to face with someone just as surprised as you are.

Staring right back at you is a young woman, roughly your age. You’re surprised to see her wearing full plate, something you’ve only seen once before on the knights who escorted the duke to Hearthspring. Startled she reaches to her hip, trying to draw a sword that isn’t there.

You attempt to say something but it comes out garbled, like you’re underwater. The young woman, eyes wide, watches you closely, her hands clenched into fists.

You raise your hands to face level and smile, trying to seem as non-threatening as possible. Tentatively, you take a step forward extending your hand out for a handshake.

The last thing you remember before you wake up is her iron fist colliding with your nose.

You wake up with a start, bolting upright and almost falling out of your tree. You catch yourself at the last second, causing enough of a commotion to disturb the birds above you, squawking in complaint as they fly away.

You hear chuckling from the next tree over from Theo as he sits in his bedroll, the same mathematics book as yesterday in his lap.

Theo smirks at you. “Not the most graceful awakening ever, that’s for sure.”

You grumble, rubbing the sleep from your eyes as he continues. “Sun’s been up for a while now. About time we should be heading off.”

You give Theo a nod, packing your things up and climbing out of the tree. You take your morning piss as Theo wakes up Sam, telling him to get a move on.

After a quick breakfast of more plum jam spread over bread, you begin to make your way to the ranger’s camp to pick up their trail. The worst of the fog from last night has lifted, and the leaves are heavy with dew, glistening in the morning sun. You don’t let the beauty of your surroundings lure you into a sense of wellbeing though, and instead keep your eyes peeled, looking for any signs of danger.

Thus you halt when you see him, a lone figure at the camp, slumped over at the base of a tree. You stay dead still, waiting for him to move and be on his way.

It doesn’t take you long the notice the blood streaks down his shirt.

You tell the others what you see. “Shit guys, I think he’s dead. Look at his clothes, they’re soaked in blood.”

Theo squints, trying to get a better look. “Aye, he’s not moving either.”

Sam looks to both of you. “Shall we have a look?”

You and Theo both nod in agreement.

As you get closer, you’re able to make out the details on the body. The ranger’s throat’s been slit from ear to ear, the blood pooling down and soaking his clothes. At his feet lies a wreathe made of young, springy branches, and threaded through the hole is the man’s sword.

Theo takes in the scene. “Didn’t expect to see this happen, that’s clearly a knife wound. All that time spent looking for the danger in the woods, when the real danger was themselves. Was this the one who tried to desert I wonder?”

Sam furrows his brow. “Nay. There’s two sets of tracks here, one en route to the lake, and a smaller set heading straight west, to the Lorn River. This man was no deserter, he was the one who threatened them.”

You look at the wreathe at the man’s feet, a solemn mood washing over the three of you. All this man was trying to do was protect the people he loved back home, and he payed the ultimate price. You imagine this morning the rangers stood exactly where you stand now paying their respects, the wreathe being the only token of respect and appreciation they could give him before they had to move on.

His sword lays at his feet, a symbol of his service to Hearthspring and his desire to protect the ones he loved. The practical part of you is screaming to take it, as he may have wanted someone to take on his duty, though another part pushes you to leave commemoration be, and to just let the man rest.

You consider for a moment, what this man would’ve wanted; To have his sword lie here and rust, or for it to be put to use, carrying on fighting for those he wanted to protect. You think back to the interaction between the ranger and the deserter, and noting his conviction you decide that he’d probably love you to take his sword.

[You now possess a typical ranger’s breaking sword!]

You examine the sword, bringing it out of its sheathe. It’s unremarkable really, a typical breaker’s sword, anslightly curved blade and no cross guard, perfect for pulling off breaking techniques. It may be quite standard, but it’s good steel and it’ll definitely do some damage if you use it properly.

Finished paying your respects, you waste no more time in following the ranger’s trail. Following the tracks is a bit more difficult in the brush of the woods, though you still keep a pretty good speed, the slight incline towards the lake not bothering you in the slightest.

It doesn’t take long for you to run into the first corpse of the day, this time a large stag, body ripped open, its entrails flung around the surroundings. You push through, though as you near the lake they get more common. There’s all manner of animals that’ve been slaughtered, does, stags, wolves, and even two bears, all in various stages of rotting. The constant reminder that you’re in the beast’s territory keep you sharp, steeling your nerves for the ordeals to come.

You barely talk during the walk, only stopping for a brief lunch of more pickled vegetables and goat’s cheese on bread. None of you have much to say, and you put the entirety of your focus on following the tracks and staying alert.

It’s late afternoon when you get an intense sense of déjà vu. You stop for second, taking in your surroundings whilst you scan your memories. The slight incline of the forest has gotten gradually steeper, and your boots sink slightly in the damp soil. You close your eyes and focus on your other senses, taking in the earthy smell of the woods, listening to the way the wind moves through th-

Wait.

Barely audible, you hear the sounds of yelling in the distance, the wind carrying the primal roars of men fighting for their life. All three of you immediately break into a full sprint, no longer bothering to follow the tracks. The only direction is up, and you slog it up the muddy incline, speeding up as the ground levels out.

The sunset on the lake would be beautiful were it not for the carcasses. Hundreds of slaughtered animals line the banks of the lake, all in various forms of mutilation and decay. Dozens more float in lake itself, bodies bloated grotesquely by the water, marring the otherwise mirrorlike surface.
Theo and Sam’s eyes go wide as they get their first look at the beast. It looks exactly like your remember, though now it’s tight, grey skin is covered in slashes and gouges. Captain Odrik and the rangers surround it in a circle, some of the rangers already wounded, most of them absolutely terrified. A few more men lie motionless on the ground, though even accounting for them the rangers still have a lot less men then they set out with. The beast shrieks as it looks around manically, sizing up the weakest link in the ring, deciding to pounce on a young ranger who was practically shaking in his boots. The man gets a small cut in before it grabs him, his shrill scream piercing your ears as the beast clamps his maw on the man’s head, crushing it like a melon. The zealous ranger next to him comes to his aid, landing a decent slash along the beast’s ribs. The thing howls in pain and backhands the ranger, sending him flying.

The rangers back off as the beast turns around and screams, spittle, blood and pieces of flesh flying from its mouth. Theo is frozen in fear whilst Sam looks fierce, already in the process of drawing his staff.

There's no way we can just watch people get killed and there's also no way we could be of help trying to confront the thing head on. Theo should probably get back and warn the town of what's happening since I have a feeling the rangers didn't have time to send anyone out.

Eyes wide, Sam draws his staff and lurches forward, planning to bolt into the fight.

You grab him by the arm, catching him as he almost breaks through the brush. ]”Don’t you fucking dare man. You’re gonna get yourself killed if you do that.”

Sam looks at you surprised, snapping out of his funk. “…Fuck. T-thanks Oscar. I wasn’t even thinking man, I just sa-“

Time is at the essence and you cut him off, taking charge of the situation. You look to Theo, his face a pale mask. “Theo, in my pack’s a bottle of lantern oil, and in Sam’s is the flint and steel. See if you can figure something out.”

Theo nods, hands shaking as he goes through your pack. You turn back to Sam. “Here’s the plan. Me and you are gonna circle around, as close as we can get to the rangers, and when that thing’s backs turned we’re gonna creep up and wail on it. Got it?”

Sam gulps. “Yeah, crystal cl-“

”GWWRRRROOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH”

The beast’s roar is all the confirmation you need and you start moving as quickly as you can through the scrub. You get glimpses of the battle as you skirt around, the beast going absolutely ballistic, working itself into a frenzy at it tries to claw at any ranger that happens to be in arms range of it. One unfortunate ranger doesn’t get out of the way in time, the beast grabbing him tight.

The doomed ranger frantically yells at the others as they look on hopelessly. “OH VAUL! VAUL! HELP ME! SAVE ME! GUYS HEL- AHHHHH!!

The ranger screams in immense pain as the beast raises him above its head and pulls, ripping the ranger in two. For a moment the beast revels in the shower of gore, nostrils flaring as it takes in the smell, breathing deeply. Only 4 rangers and the captain remain, all of them stoically facing the beast, swords held in a fighting stance. The beast whips around, screaming at the rangers, exposing its back to you.

You and Sam make eye contact, nodding. You both emerge from the brush, moving as fast as you possibly can without giving yourselves away to the beast. The rangers notice you both, the Captain taking in a sharp breath in surprise. You draw your sword slowly, Sam brandishing his staff. Understanding what you’re trying to do, the Captain starts yelling at the beast, taunting it. The rest of the rangers follow suit and the beast howls, charging at them and goring yet another ranger, tossing him into the air like a rag doll.

You’re so close to the beast you can see its sickly, grey skin stretching even tauter as it breathes, covered in both the ranger’s and its own blood. The beast, drunk on the smell of blood, sniffs the air frantically. Your heart stops as the beast pauses, noticing a foreign scent in the air, cautiously beginning to turn around.

The ranger on the floor, eyes trained on you the whole time, starts to whimper, making as much noise as he can. The beast, surprised that its prey isn’t dead, promptly turns around and starts repeatedly bashing the prone rangers head in with its fists, the ranger sacrificing his life to give you the perfect chance to strike.

Sam lashes out first, hitting the back of the beast’s knee with his staff, buckling it. The beast yelps out in surprise as it’s brought to a crouch. You raise your sword, two handed and in a reverse grip, and bring it down, plunging it almost hilt deep into the beast’s back.

”ARRGGGRRWWOOOOOOOOAAHHHHHHH!!”

The beast screams in pain, jolting upright and spinning, trying to reach around and come face to face with the thing that caused it such pain. Still holding the sword, your flung off the beast’s back, the sword still lodged deep in the beast’s back. You land a few metres away next to a ranger corpse, winded badly. Fighting through the pain, you grab the dead ranger’s sword and push yourself up in one motion, just in time to see the beast thrash in a frenzy, roaring in pain.

>Run to the rangers and get in formation, letting it come to you
A close formation will let people hit the beast's hands/head if it tries to attack any one of them. Maybe it'll allow us to survive until Theo arrives with the Molotov.

Tell them the plan
>>

>Y didnt they bring bows?
Cultural influence from Lesser Camewell. Bows were always seen as a coward's weapon in Lesser Camewell, and thus they never really developed any martial traditions for it. Due to the huge gap in developed techniques between archery and breaking, the name given to Lesser Wellish sword fighting, many skilled breakers soon developed to the point where they could cut arrows out of the air, cementing archery as an ineffective form of combat in the eyes of the Lesser Wellish.

The need for archery as ranged support in battles is also not as integral due to magic. This is especially true in large scale conflicts like war, since large groups of war mages channeling through totems wreak a lot more havoc than any conventional archers could ever hope to do.

Hate to stop it in the middle of the action guys, but I'm proper cunted and need to sleep. Will pop in tomorrow and hopefully get a couple of posts in, but I got a ton of shit to do tomorrow so runtime is pretty much solely dependent on how that goes. In the mean time, keep voting and I'll pick up next session with whatever wins.

Cheers for playing everyone, and don't forget to check my twitter https://twitter.com/OlasQM for updates

Wrong. Maybe, its been an actual 4 years since I read early bq. Either way he needs to improve like you did and anons sucking his asshole clean won't encourage that.

He keeps making excuses to not run because he doesnt want to admit that he hates BQ

>>1802759
Its not a hate for bq, its a hate for its players and specifically the evil irc cabal.
>>
>>1802759
Nah. It's really because he hates us. We bullied him a bit too much and broke through his mental defences. He snapped, beat his sister within an inch of her life, then vowed to never run a quest again to punish us for his own misdeeds
