Love. It’s always about love.

It’s always the same, unrequited or not. One would think after a thousand songs about the exact same thing, someone would think to write something else—but they don’t. Or maybe they do, but they realized the magic of pop and love blends together so well. There’s other things in life too, like...

Terrible foreign TV soap operas?

Not even that; at least they have more than two words to describe attraction to someone. But you’re not here asking the hard-hitting questions like “What is love?” or “When will they hire lyricists that don’t recycle topics for the umpteenth like they’re trying to save the environment?” No, Cupid and co. can answer that. The real question is:

How on earth did no one realize that was Rori Shiba in costume?

You deeply mull over this as you walk away from the small, make-shift venue that the Sirens were playing at.

“Wow, can you believe it? The Sirens are even better live!” Kaori says.

You reply, “Somehow, I’m not surprised.”

The two of you walk down the stone roads of the courtyard, surrounded by a light crowd that constantly moves around.

“So, Onii-sama,” she says, lightly smiling, “I heard you now have a tag-team partner.”

“Word travels fast, huh?” you say, “Sorry, someone snagged me early.”

“Ah. It’s not as if we would make a good team, if you think about it. Fighting alongside me would be... disorienting, to say the least.”

“Hmm, is it?” you think audibly.

“It’s hard to imagine otherwise,” Kaori says, “Who’s Kyougetsu? I’ve seen her around during Practicals, but that’s all.”

“Uh, let me think.”

You say, ”She’s cu—I mean, friendly.”

“Y-You... you did it again! You’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?!”

“Huh? I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Bully,” she pouts.

”Anyways, she’s the Dark Dragon Empress, haven’t you heard? The Empress of all Dark Dragons.”

“Onii-sama, that doesn’t tell me anything.”

“Really? Because it tells me everything I need to know.”

Kaori covers her mouth and stares off with a horrified expression. She mutters, “Such a bully.”

You smile. “I didn’t say anything.” She only sighs as she slightly walks ahead of you. “Where are we going?”

“Getting food for the picnic. What do you want?”

“...Picnic? What picnic?”

“One that I’ve decided you’re going as of... about five hours ago, that one,” she says, “The one we talked about a few days ago.”

You contemplate this.

Wow, the last few days sure felt like weeks, almost months. Time sure passes by slow when you have a busy life.

“Did... did we?”

“Yes, we did. Don’t worry, I remembered for the both of us.”

“...”

“Let’s check out one of the first-year’s stalls.”

“Eh? I thought our classes were free today?”

“Yeah, it’s one for octopus balls or something.”

“...I didn’t know octopi had testes...”

“No, not that...”

“Just kidding.”

You give her an exasperated look. “Haven’t you heard? Their takoyaki was so good, every other junk food stall had to close because of its sheer prowess. Legends say the chef is dubbed ‘The Fryer of the North,” sends shivers down my spine even imagining the other three heavenly kings.”

“Y-you’re messing around, right?”

You two stop at a stall, and someone says, “The Legendary Fry Cook of the North is on break right now, sorry. You’ll just have to have me.” It’s Nanana, that girl from before who dragged Yamikigo back to the curry stall. “Hey Katsuya, Etou.”

You raise a hand. “Two orders of the usual, please.”

“The usual!?” Kaori looks at you, “Wait, never mind that—make it three.”

“...Ehn?”

“Ta-da!” Kaori says, happily revealing the setup a few minutes away.

Claiming over a wooden picnic table, Sorai’s holding a large tablet and talking to it. When he notices you two, he turns it around, revealing a familiar face—

“Kats! How’s it going?” your sister Haruko asks.

“Haru!” you say, “What’s this?”

“Torture,” she answers, pretending to sulk.

“We’re celebrating your win!” Kaori says.

Sorai says, “Don’t jynx it, and that’s not it. It’s been a while since we all hung out together, and Kaori suggested... this.”

“Aaaa!” Haru shouts, “I can smell the food from here! This is cruel! Find someone with teleportation, hurry!”

Sorai replies, “Sorry, hospital cafeteria food’ll have to do. You’ll just have to wait until Kats wins for real.”

For real?

”Oh? Is that your jealousy talking?”

“Jealous? It’s like you want me to go and ruin all the fun.”

“Right, didn’t you call it anti-fun magic?” Kaori mumbles.

You say, “You’re right, Sorai, I’d be hesitant about punching schoolgirls in their faces too. You just wouldn’t be living your life correctly.”

“Ha. Man, I’m all for gender equality,” he says, making a fist.

“S-Sorai! Don’t let anyone see you doing something like that!” Kaori says.

“Huh? Kaorin, I donnu. Don’t tell me you’re one of those guys that uses equality when it’s convenient for them,” he replies as you take away the tablet away from him.

You quickly step away from the conversation before things start to catch on fire.

“Sorry Haru, I'll bring you some on Friday,” you tell her.

“Ah, really? That’s a promise then!” she says, “I’ve been eating the same few things for a long while now, but I think it’s one of those things I’ll have to accept.”

”That’s... grim. Are you really going to be okay?”

”If you want, I can have Kaori cook for you on the weekends,” you say.

She laughs. “It’s okay, I wouldn’t want to bother you two all the time. I have to cheer my little brother on from the backlines, after all.”

“You’re not a bother,” you sigh. “So, uh, how are you holding up?”

Haru pulls back from the camera, thoughtfully looking up and away. “Fine.”

“Let’s see... if your ‘wonderful’ is a ‘good’, ‘great’ is ‘okay’, a ‘fine’ should be...”

“Ahaha, okay, okay,” she says, “I’m a bit tired, that’s all. I can sleep for twelve hours a day and still wake up drained.”

“I think if anyone slept that long, they’d hurt.”

Laughing, she replies, “Makes sense, but it feels a little different, like it doesn’t go away. But—! I’m hanging on.”

Out of all the words a sick one could say, “hanging on” isn’t exactly the most comforting, as if they’re about to fall off the edge. But then again, what else can you expect? After all, psionic necrosis isn’t something you can sleep off.

You give her a smile.

Sorai calls you, “C’mon, let’s eat! The food’ll get cold!”

Haru mutters, “Aaah, so jealous... I need to reach zen...”

“I’ll visit you on Friday, with food too if I don’t end up in a hospital.”

“Don’t say things like that!”

You sit with them, with Kaori beside you and Sorai and Haruko across. They say food tastes better with friends, but you’re too busy feeling bad about someone being left out. Conversations about nothing, just time wasted laughing and talking about things you probably wouldn’t remember an hour later.

Familiar faces that stuck around since you could remember, alongside all those highs and lows.

It reminds you of...

Six Years Ago

“YOU DID WHAT?!” Haruko shouts.

“I didn’t break any bones; I only broke a shed, and nobody saw that!”

Ah yes, your attempt at using a barrier as a hoverboard.

“I can’t believe you did this! You could’ve gotten seriously hurt!” she says, “NEVER do that again, okay?”

Sorai butts his head into the scene. “Haruko, you’re going to scare the neighbors into calling the police if you keep yelling.”

“Hush!” she silences him. Then, she turns to you and says, “You know you can’t use your psi like that.”

You purse your lips, annoyed. “That’s one of those laws nobody cares about, like uh... jaywalking.”

“One day, you’re going to get in serious trouble, but long before then you’ll probably break all of your bones.”

“That’s okay. I’ll go to one of those schools with wizard healers, and it’ll be fine.”

“Don’t call them that!” Haruko groans, “Alright, fine, let me just...” She paces around. “Got it.” Suddenly, she spins on her heels to face you. “I’ll teach you something proper, but only if you promise to be responsible.”

You blink.

”I promise. Double promise.”

“I didn’t ask for a double promise!” she replies, “How suspicious...”

“Hey, teach me something too,” Sorai says.

Haru’s taken aback. “...Ehn?”

“Don’t leave me outta it! Teach me too!”

“...” Etou just stares offhandedly in your general direction.

Your older sister crosses her arms. “Guess it can’t be helped. But you need to remember, you should only use magic to protect yourself, not to hurt others or show off, okay?”

Sorai stands up, “I triple promise! Can we learn it now too?”

“...Ah, whatever, I’ve got nothing better to do. Come here,” she says, leading you to an open space in the back yard. As you two walk up, Haru puts her hands on her hips and says, “What I’m about to teach you is super-secret, so no one else is allowed to know, understand?”

“Yes!” you say.
“Okay!” Sorai adds.

“I will teach you the ultimate secret, one that has been passed down only by the word of mouth for countless generations!”

“Was there even psi back then?”
“Liar.”

“It’s not a lie! I can only tell truths!” she says, “I will now reveal to you... the secret behind the psi barrier!”

“...I already know how to make one.”
“That’s lame. I’m going back to lunch.”

“You—! Don’t you dismiss me after promising things!”

As Sorai walks away, you say to Haru, “This better be good.”

“W-well, if barriers are so boring, what would you want to know?”

“Wait... I can be invincible!” you say, “Barriers are okay with me!”

“That’s uh... ah oh whatever,” Haru resigns, “I’ll be honest, I don’t know what else I can teach besides barriers. We don’t have the same psionic art, after all. Something basic like projection, like a barrier—I can teach that.”

“Psykinesis... right?” you attempt to recall her talent.

“Yup! I guess you can’t really call something as plain as that an art, but your big sister can do it better than anyone!” she puffs her chest up in pride. Haruko can warp, deform, and manipulate psi as if it was physical matter like no one else, even capable of making a weapon out of it, blunt or sharp. She calls it plain, everyone calls it straight unfair.

With that in mind, this better be awesome! You won’t say it outright, but you’d be very, very disappointed in her if it wasn’t.

Haru says to you, “You understood why you fell that day right?”

“Kinda...” you say, “Psi has to go in and out of the body after a long time to recharge or something, like a battery...right?”

“Right.”

“And when the highest psi goes back, I fall down a little, and since I’m making a barrier at the same place, I end up sort of sinking through it.”

“Until it can’t hold your weight anymore, bingo!” she says, smiling. She seems to be really happy that you got it. “Well, have you thought about making a second barrier below your first one?”

“That’s... hard! A second barrier? And wouldn’t I sink through that one anyway?”

“Yup, a separate, second barrier. And yup, you would sink right through. So to solve this, what if you have your barriers constantly push you upward at the same rate you fall?

“Ehn? I can’t do that! That’s impossible for anyone but you! What if I just keep moving my feet instead?”

“Katsuya, that’s like wanting to ride a bike with square wheels because you were too lazy to find round ones.”

“I-it’s easier than your idea!”

She sighs, closing her eyes. A second passes, and she opens them again as if a lightbulb had gone off. “What if I said there was another secret trick to make your arts the strongest?”

“W-What?! There’s something like that?!” you say, “Tell me!”

“First, you have to strike a pose.”

“A-A pose...?”

“Do it!” she says, “Magic is one thirds talent, one thirds skill, and one thirds concentrated power of will!”

You raise your arms in front of you and bend your elbows, moving your feet to shoulder-length’s distance. “W-what now?”

“A battle cry!” she shouts, “Do it with me! HUAA!!”

“H-HUAAAAA!!” you half yell.

“Listen, Katsuya! If you can believe it, then you can will it so! Do it again! HAAAA!!”

“HAAAAAA!!”

“The meaning of psionics is to bend the world with your mind! I’ll teach you the secrets of the repulsing barrier, so say it with me again! HAAA!!!”

“H-HUAAAAA!!”

Kaori rolls her eyes as she looks on from a distance. “Really...?”

Sorai, on the other hand, quietly balls up his fists and lowers his voice instead and says, “Haa...”

“Haa...” you mumble, rubbing your nose.

The Student Council Room is unbearable; the air is thick like smog, a strange, suffocating atmosphere that no one seems to feel except you. It fills the room to the brim, pressing against the walls. Neither Kururi nor the Vice-President of the Student Council, Houko Higami.

The latter sits across the coffee table from you two, smiling. This is the first time you’ve actually talked to him, or even got this close. Normally, he’d be surrounded people vying for his attention. Also, he has his own unofficial fan club, which blows your mind.

Maybe part of you was hoping to undergo some kind of grand epiphany after meeting him, but instead, you find yourself practically choking while trying to breathe. It reminds you of something else, but you can’t put your finger on what.

“Thank you for coming to see me,” Higami says, “Nekoyo, Kururu. How can I help you?”

Kururi says, “I want—no, need to talk with my friend. Fujisaki said you could help.”

You look at him. Rin asked you to help, so you thought you should see it through to the end. You sent the head of the Disciplinary Committee a few text messages, but all he said was to keep up the good work, presumably busy dealing with some other problem.

Higami’s faint smile vanishes. “Why should I?”

Kururi, surprised, says, “I can...I can resolve this!”

He replies, “It’s already resolved, as far as I know.”

“It’s not resolved. The safety of the students should be your concern,” you say.

Higami looks your way. “From what I could tell, Kururi would be fine if she stayed in her dorm room at night.”

She replies, “I didn’t want to repeat what happened last time...!”

“Oh? We would’ve added security. In fact, we already did. The psi scanners at the doorways now all have dead man’s switches in the event of failure. Now, we’re not the kind to meddle in the affairs of others,” he says, while Kururi remains silent. “Let me ask, what do you hear when you think of the word ‘Tetsuyashi?’”

You say, “What does this have to do with anything?”

He stares at you, unblinking. It’s hard to even swallow.

What’s this feeling?

“Everything,” he says, “It seems like I’m the only one that truly cares; cleaning up after you is a pain. The longer someone does something, the higher chance a mistake would occur. The scene seems to have stabilized, so why don’t we leave it at so?”

Kururi says, “How can we leave it like this?”

“Because we’ve already talked to Itsumo. She’ll be sent back with no problems, to wherever she is. Any other problems could be rounded up easily,” he replies. “Simple enough, right? To repeat myself: this is none of our concern.”

Kururi replies, “That’s... not for you to decide.”

Who on earth does this guy think he is?

You can’t accept something like this.

You won’t—!

You stand up. “What are you talking about? How can this be okay in any way?”

Kururi mutters, “Katsuya...”

Higami’s eyes narrow. “You’re one of those, aren’t you?”

“What...?”

“The idealistic. Dreams are only dreams, Nekoyo. Don’t you know what reality is?”

“You’re telling me you can’t do anything, even after all these cover-ups? It looks like me you don’t want to.”

“You mean, I don’t need to. Therefore, simply put, I won’t.” He leans back on his sofa. “I’m no god. I can only patch up so many mistakes.”

You grit your teeth. Screw this. Being in this room is hell, and this guy isn’t worth anyone’s time. You’re being thrown off, like you’re constantly standing on tilted, rocking, swirling ground.

Your day started off decent, but now it’s ruined by Higami. There’s something about his face, his smile, his everything that makes your skin crawl. You were happy you’ve never met him before, and now you can only wish you’d never see him again.

“Kururi,” you say, “Let’s go.”

“But, we’re not done here...”

“We’re just wasting our time,” you say. You look at her, and the expression on her face says she agrees, even if she’s hesitant to admit it.

She faces Higami quickly, “Thank you for your time. Have a nice day, Vice President.” Then, she faces you again, leaving.

You say, “Goodbye.”

[1/2]
>>
You turn around to exit through the door, and all of a sudden, the double doors close between you and Kururi, locking you in.

You freeze. “...What the...?”

“Where are you going?” Slowly, you look back to see Higami smiling.

You say, “What are you doing?”

“We had an appointment, didn’t you? Wouldn’t you see it all the way through?”

”Let me out. Now.”

He blankly stares back. Then, he says, “Sure.”

The doors swing open again to your disbelief. You suspiciously look at him, and as quick as you can, you run and cross—only to end up face Higami in the Studen Council Room again.

“...Huh?”

Higami says, “Oh, how nice of you to return.”

It clicks.

Ah, right.

Kaori’s magic, that’s what it reminded you of.

You turn around, reaching for the doors again to leave—and you bump into something. Staggering back, you open your eyes to find a cracked mirror in place of the exit.

“Do you liked being pulled around? Do you like it when someone jerks the leash around your neck?” he says.

Forget talking to him. You send out a psi field, reaching as far as you can. And all you can feel is his psi.

Psi Signature Recorded.

You turn back around to see Higami looking at you as if nothing’s wrong.

“What I want to know,” he says, “Is why she put that leash around your neck anyways? Why are you so interesting to her?”

You could blow out the door with your psi, or even threaten to send him into next week, but you hold back. You won’t get out of it if you do anything rash.

Instead, you say to him, “Beats me. What about the leash around your neck though? Someone had to have put you up to this, right?”

“Me? I’m doing this because I want to,” Higami says, “I heard a certain someone got a new toy, and you gave me an opportunity to see it live for myself. I wonder, is it your face? Maybe she likes how say those platitudes.”

You back away, closing your eyes.

Your psi is fine. It’s different than Kaori’s art—you can still hear yourself think. Your senses aren’t scrambled; they’re being manipulated, your nerves fed lies after lies.

“What do you want from me?” you say.

“Let’s see... physically, you’re not exceptional. How’s your hearing?” You clutch your head as it starts ringing unbearably, and then stops. “Maybe your psi reserves?” There’s a momentary feeling of intense nausea. “That’s quite an amount, but nothing too amazing. Maybe... your art?”

You feel your nerves stand on end. This is bad—you can’t hurt him. Balling up your fists as hard as you can, you focus, shutting down your psi before a part of you forcibly tries to kick it into action. There’s a sputter, like a lighter failing to spark. And again. And again.

“Oh. I guess you were nothing special after all,” you hear his voice say. “Have a good day, Nekoyo.”

All of a sudden, the pressure goes away, and you almost drop onto the ground as you breathe out in relief.

Kururi’s voice abruptly cuts through the fog. “Katsuya, are you okay?!”

You’re standing beside her in the hallway, hands on your knees.

You slowly straighten your back. “Ugh, I think so. What just happened?”

“You just... you suddenly fell down. We need to get you to the nurse.”

She looks fine, compared to how you just felt.
>”Yeah, let’s go.”
>”No, I’m fine. We should talk about what we’re going to do.”
>”Don’t worry about me, are you okay?”
>”Did you not see what just happened?”
>Write-in.

”Did you not see what just happened?” you say, “What was I doing the last two minutes?"

She looks at you confused. “You walked out muttering something, and when I noticed you weren’t behind me, I turned around and saw you standing like you were frozen. Frozen, like in a block of ice. Then... you suddenly almost fell.”

You shake your head, “I think the Vice President was using his psionic art on me. I was seeing things—”

“What? No way. Impossible!” she says, “He’s a little... resolute, but he wouldn’t do something like that. He seems far too friendly.”

“What the—” you say, “Did we talk to the same person?”

“Are you okay? That’s settles it, we’re going to the infirmary.”

“No, I’m okay, really. Forget what I said,” you say as you start walking, “We should talk about what we’re going to do.”

She gives you a worried expression. “If that’s what you say...” There’s a pause as she thinks. “What we’re going to do next... hmm.”

“You were with the girl last, right?”

“Not exactly, no,” Kururi answers, “Rin told me he’d handle it, and that I could go back after giving me a lecture. I was... actually surprised that was it.”

You cross your arms. “She’s... probably at a police station, being asked where her parents are.”

“That would seem like the most likely possibility, doesn’t it? If what Higami says was true.”

“That she’ll be ‘sent back’, whatever that means,” you say.

“But before anything, we need to be able to find Itsumo.”

Uh...
>Go to every police station, one by one, starting with the one closest to where she last was.
>There’s probably someone in the school with an art that might help.
>It wouldn’t hurt to go and ask Rin. Carefully.
>...Maybe Kururi has an idea?
>Write-in.

“There’s probably someone in the school with an art that might help,” you say. “If we look around, I’m sure we can find it.”

“...Someone that could help?” she says, “Is there really anyone like that?”

You say, “...That’s right! If we can find that Mita girl, she might be able to use her powers to help.”

“What can she do...exactly?”

“I’m not sure, but we have to try. Come on, let’s go.”

“...To where?”

First, you two check the room the Occult Club normally uses—only to find out that she quit almost right after seeing you two.

The two of you would then go on walking around, trying to find someone to help you find someone else.

Searching every nook and cranny of the school, you would come to the conclusion that either she has vanished completely and disappeared from spacetime, or that she’s in the city, which in that case you might as well search every police station while you were at it.

In actuality, Mita was still in the closet of the Student Council Room, her hand clamping her mouth shut, desperately trying to not make sure Higami hears or notices her. He wasn’t aware that the closet had a new resident, and Mita wasn’t about to go ahead and break the news to someone that kind of scary.

It took about three hours before the Vice President left and she could retrieve her cold, overcooked instant noodles, and then it took about another three before she bothered to find you herself.

You weren’t too pleased.

Thanks for playing! That was a bit short, but my energy seems to be running extra low nowadays. I could run on anytime except during NA weekday nights, but whoops. Classes are also going to start soon for me, so I’ll go ahead and see how that goes, especially with my weird schedule.

Comments, questions, criticism is welcome as always.

Thanks for running! It's always nice to see you and your quests around here. And I know what you mean about weird schedules. I've been working (in fact I was posting from work earlier under a different ID) and going to school full-time, and it's basically forced me to put my own quest on hiatus.Good luck with classes, hope to see you running again soon!

Thanks for running. You're not the only one whose about to have their schedule fucked over by classes, unfortunately.
