Welcome back, Mechjockeys of Phaeton, to the ninety-fifth installment of Mecha Space Pirate Quest. I'm your host, Wong, as always, and today you are still Pirate King Roarke Susan Starwind, Rightful Ruler of the Asteroid Belt and pilot of the undefeated Knuckle Kaiser. Also a newlywed husband to six women.

Today is a day of reckoning for General Hermione Fairchild, mistress of the Super-Battleship Iulia Maesa, pilot of the Rose Queen mark 6. Today her many horrible chickens come home to roost.

Hm, let's start things off with a vote.

>[Follow Fairchild's groundcar]
>[Go to the mechbay where shuttles would launch to the Iulia Maesa from]

Either way you're commandeering a Bluegill and having someone else fire up the Kaiser and bring it to you.
>>
>>1824960
>[Go to the mechbay where shuttles would launch to the Iulia Maesa from]

Can someone other than Roarke fire up the KK and bring to him now that it has the Bio Core?
>>
>>1824960
>[Go to the mechbay where shuttles would launch to the Iulia Maesa from]
It's a tough choice. Either she won't be in the car or she could try a different shuttle. Either options can lead to problems, but the main issue is her getting to the Iulia Maesa and her soldiers. Still, keep some eyes on her vehicle. Who knows who she might have with her.

You raised a point that I had thought of and it's honestly a very good one. You'll see what happens when I post.

..So does that mean there will be a Kaiser mover to get it around? Do we get a fancy watch that allows us to call the Kaiser? As much as I wish to be afraid, my mech loving side wants to see how it could be done.

Within a minute, you've commandeered one of your crew's Bluegills and are tearing through the sky.

You're informed over the commnet that two of your units are already following the groundcar Fairchild arrived in, with orders to detain. You, though, head straight for the mechbay allotted to Fairchild and her troops. Fortunately, aside from shuttlecraft, she seems to distrust you too much to have landed any of her other mecha.

You've also sent orders for the Kaiser to be sent there, you can work out how to swap mecha when you arrive. You expect, based on how close the bays are together, that it will be there when you arrive.

“Admiral...I mean, your majesty, we've caught the car.” Vidcomms show a distressed-looking secretary kneeling with her hands behind her head and the pilot of the other Bluegill pointing a rifle at her while the second pilot remains in his mech, “The target wasn't on board.”

“Sneaky bitch.” You remark, “Good work, detain her for now, we'll debrief her later and release her into UJCIDF custody barring extraordinary circumstances.” You flick the heeljets of the Bluegill, swinging its legs forward, as you spot a taxi...essentially a big, luxury jetbike with extra seats in the back...peel into the bay almost beneath your feet. Looking down, you gaze into a hate-filled face surrounded by whipping pink hair. Let her scowl, you've got her this time. Another groundcar is following her, but you ignore it, the only reason you didn't stomp the taxi flat was the civilian driving it.

As for Orders? Get everyone ready. Either for protecting the colony, taking her Capital ship, or dealing with anyone who sides with her.
Her goal is to escape or get to the ship to fight. We prevent that, we win.
In either case, if we are ready before her, we will have the advantage.

You send a fleet-wide broadcast, “Iron Kestrels, Storm Dragons, Red Siren's Pilots, Stone Soldiers, Beckingham's Crew, and other personnel. We, the people of Phaeton, have only been a formal nation for a short time, but already, our soverignty has been threatened. As your leader, I am taking steps...” The Bluegill's feet crunch down on the floor of the bay. “...To punish those who treat us like garbage floating in the asteroid belt. Today, we will have respect. Today, we will have JUSTICE! Rhinehawk, launch all mecha to form an intercept zone between Auditorium and the Iulia Maesa. Do not permit any shuttlecraft onto that ship! What's the delay on my mech?”

“Some trouble getting it started up, Cap...er, Admi...oh damn it...KING Roarke! Karen says it's on its way now.” Avi sounds phlegmatic as always, but you can hear cheers and whistles in the background.

The taxi slews to a stop and Fairchild jumps out, hobbling with her cane, sheer adrenaline carrying her forward.

The other groundcar slews to a stop, Colonel Luxol, General Hatsheput, and their bodyguards piling out, guns in hand, yelling at her to stop. A huge shadow rumbles out of the darkened bay, distracting you, and you turn to see a huge mech looming over yours. It's roughly as large as the Kaiser was when you first found it. A SOUL unit, but not one you recognize and not very impressive compared to some of the others you've seen, black and purple. It draws a beamsaber from its belt with one hand and grabs a rifle down off a rack with the other. You prepare to cut it in half with your Bluegill...when abruptly, the air becomes golden fire.

A huge beam slices through the air, the shockwave knocking people to the ground as it scythes through the mechbay, ripping off the enemy mech's right arm, then again, barely grazing the rifle in its other hand and causing it to explode. The armless SOUL mech reels backwards and falls to the ground, seemingly too shellshocked to try anything else.

You swivel the Bluegill's head, and just as you expected, you spot the Tarrasque stomping towards you, the Kaiser strapped to its back with a squad of Bluegills keeping it balanced. Sirens are going off everywhere, the automatic sprinkler systems are going on, and in the distance you can see that everything remotely flammable in the bay is on fire, including several shuttles.

Fairchild slowly pulls herself up to her feet. Her face is a nightmare, you've never seen so much hatred in a human being before, although you wonder what your own expression is like right now.

“Sir, um, your majesty, that is. There's, ah, a small problem with the cordon. Um, it's your wife. She's...ah...she's doing this.” You receive vidcomms from a Kestrel pilot, showing the Iulia Maesa floating in space.

The Archen is dancing vindictively just inside the range of its CIWS turrets, dancing between the beams. The laser projectors in the vividly scarlet and pink mech's palms rake the ship's catapults, and you can see a few unlucky units similar to the one Fatima scrubbed, although equipped differently, trying to huddle inside them to avoid her. As you watch, one's only surviving limb gets severed, leaving it to drift pathetically.

One tries to line up a sniper rifle, but a pale-blue beam that, while not as big as the Tarrasque's, still packs a grandiose whallop, cores its laser-scarred torso and blasts it to smithereens. You don't need to SEE Miles' face to tell she's cackling. Keith's former S-Slinger doesn't look much different. It's much less fancy, and green and white instead of his awful mishmash of colors...you wonder if Miles got drunk and used the green paint instead of black...and the wings have been replaced with the shell of her old Harpy, forming a sort of armored cape around its shoulders. Or perhaps just crude wings, they seem articulated and clearly contain more thrusters.

The largest Harpy you've ever seen rockets by, returning to human form just long enough to cut a flanking enemy down with a beam halberd. The S-Slayer frame stolen from Lysa has been heavily modified, slimmed down, the remnants of Richard's missile boat Harpy Custom remade into bladed fins on each limb that turn it into a dagger-like jet in its other form. Its missile bursts fill the sky with orange light.

You turn your attention to Fairchild. More and more UJCIDF personnel are arriving, you need to do this now. You pop the cockpit and ride the liftwire down.

She hauls herself upright, leaning on her cane, “That Mustang Commando was SOUL property, Starwind. As a member of the Solar System League, you'll be paying for its repairs.” Numerous emotions wash over her face, making it twitch erratically, most noticeably rage and panic as she backs away from you. “How dare you detain me? I am a UJCIDF General, and no matter what your self-proclaimed title is, I will ALWAYS be greater than you.” She spreads her arms wide, “King of the Belt? Don't make me laugh! What do you really control, right now? Half a dozen colonies!? A few hundred mecha!? I have ARMIES! I have SOUL! I have conquered ENTIRE WORLDS! What makes you think you have the right to stand before me so arrogantly!? What makes you think you're even in the same LEAGUE to call yourself my equal, you filthy space trash!? I am GENERAL HERMIONE FAIRCHILD! THE ranking General of the UJCIDF! Everything you have can be taken from you without me lifting a finger, didn't that pathetic Five Man Band prove that to you already today!? I'll ask you one more time, HOW DARE YOU GET IN MY WAY!?”

“Justice.” You reply simply, putting on your gloves.

She sneers at you, “And what, exactly, are you getting justice for? You chose to live outside the law, you and your people threw away the right to claim the protection of justice.”

“How dare you dirty that word with your lying tongue.” You shake your head. “There are courts besides Jovian courts, there is justice besides the Jovian justice you have perverted. True justice exists beyond the law, and when laws are unjust, just men and women can be forced to live outside them, while people like you remain within the law and yet are still unjust...only, you couldn't do that, could you? You became greedy. You failed to protect the law, but instead perverted it, covering up crimes that even a space pirate is disgusted by. For everything I've stolen and everyone I've kidnapped, you've despoiled and enslaved a thousand times over. For every enemy I've killed, you've betrayed and murdered an ally. I'm not in your way, Fairchild, you're in mine, an obstacle to my people having a future. This is for justice, real justice, the justice the sister you never could live up to believed in.”

Her lips peel away from her teeth like a baboon showing its fangs, “My sister...” Her voice is thick with contempt, “That idealistic slut. Everything was easy for her, I understand that now, she never had to make any hard choices. From birth until death, it was one straight line skyward. Don't talk to me about someone you don't know!”

You shake your head, “I know her better than you did. Just as I know my mother better than you did. And Clemmy. Do you think they would be proud of you? Hermione Fairchild, you are under arrest.”

“Not yet I'm no-AGGH!” She goes for her pistol, but as she draws it, there's a bang from behind you and the weapon goes flying out of her hand, along with a couple of fingers. She clutches her ruined hand against her chest, staggering backwards with a look of agony on her face.

“Colonel Luxol, sir, I'm afraid that as you are the ranking officer of SOUL present I must turn myself in to you for the crime of assaulting a prisoner.” Keith Young intones tonelessly, chambering the next round in his rifle.

“You were defending an allied sovereign, my lad, I'm sure it's alright.” Trevor Luxol gives Keith a worried look, “...You look a bit...feverish, are you sure you don't want to go be with your woman?”

He shakes his head, “Colonel Stern can protect Lysa from any more of this witch's assassins better than I can. I'd only get in the way of the doctors. Besides, I want to see justice done.”

“Glad to hear it, my boy. Would you like to read her list of crimes in detail? They are rather substantial.” The Colonel asks uneasily as Keith focuses through his rifle's optic on General Fairchild, who is continuing to scream and clutch her hand.

“No thank you, sir. They sicken me, and it would take too long.” Keith's voice is oddly toneless. "Beating me was one thing, but Lysa...Lysa is her own blood. Someone who would do something like that isn't even a criminal, criminals at least are human. This is something lower, like a flatworm or an aphid."

“Kill you! I'll KILL YOU!” Fairchild screams, angry tears spilling down her face. She grabs her PC, taps a program, and speaks into it, “Rose Queen, to me! Kill everyone else! Destroy their mecha! Don't let anyone but me survive!” She grins vindictively at you, “You...you think I'm ever truly without my mech!?”

A strangely flower-like white and pink mech materializes from where it was concealed behind active camouflage, a small cloud of whirling, seed-shaped drones surrounding it, each glowing as its weapons charge up...

...and a hail of long, slender drills and beam sabers promptly rip it to pieces, shredding it thoroughly, each drone exploding like a cherry bomb. Her mech is annihilated in seconds as the Anseis and S-Flowerhorn's drones rip hers apart, the two close-combat mecha pouncing on it like rival lions on a gazelle. The shriek of ripping metal is deafening as they tear through its beautiful, petals-shaped beam shields and rip it limb-from limb, and then shred those limbs into fragments.

Yet Fairchild is still smiling madly. “Jovian squads are groups of THREE, Starwind! Do you know why it's called a Mustang COMMANDO?” She laughs insanely as a second black-and-purple mech like the one Fatima disarmed materializes from stealth, beamsaber held high to obliterate you as it marches forward.

You have about half a second to wonder why Fatima doesn't open fire on it, too, before you have your answer in the form of two pilebunker rods piercing through the back of the Mustang Commando's knees and driving it to the ground. Lightning crackles over its form as the S-Betta presses its knee into the larger mech's back, holding it down and administering a punishing dose of voltage.

Fairchild's face goes white, and she screams into her PC, “Iulia Maesa! This is your commander, open fire with the main batteries! I repeat, open fire on my location! Burn it all! Destroy this whole damned colony! Leave nothing but ash!”

“Mmm...sorry, no can do, General.” An insouciant voice answers her.

“Are you afraid of them!? Coward, the Iulia Maesa is the strongest ship in the UJCIDF! Open fire, or I'll kill you and everyone you've ever LOVED!” She howls, her blotchy, tear-streaked face looking positively deformed.

“Tell you what, let me put you on hold while I go ask the Major what he wants to do.” There's a click, and a song starts to play.

'Some folks are born made to wave the flag, ooh they're red, white, and blue!'

“...Those sneaky bastards, when did they do that?” Trevor Luxol remarks, his look of worry transforming into a grin.

“What?” She stares disbelievingly at her PC.

'And when the band plays Hail To The Chief, ooh they point the cannon at you! Lawd!'

“Oh, hey, Credence Clearwater Revival, that's 'Fortunate Son'.” You remark. “Yeah, those are references to the American Flag and the American President's theme song.”

“...What?” She asks again,

'It ain't me! It ain't me! I ain't no senator's son! It ain't me! It ain't me! I ain't no fortunate one!'

“Oh, the Major says he's busy figuring out how the drink machine on his new ship works. Also that we're not doing that. Enjoy prison you corrupt bitch.” The voice on the line is gleefully cheerful, “Now let's just lock the mechbays and deactivate the catapults so no more of her troops can get out.”

“D-do you think we could simulate a hull breach so the automatic antivac partitions seal off the hallways?” Another voice asks.

“Nah, no need. Just activate Emergency Drill 31B, it sets them off. Boom, no rescue team for this bridge crew.” A third voice, a bit more rustic, chimes in, “This is some good coffee, must be an expensive blend.”

“GET OUT OF THAT! IT'S MINE! THAT WHOLE SHIP IS MINE! YOU LITTLE RATS!” Fairchild shrieks into her PC.

Trevor Luxol raises his voice, “Garret, do inform Major Wedge that all three of you can expect a commendation for this. You just prevented the mass murder of an entire colony and the effective dissolution of the SSL. After all, I doubt the Martians or surviving pirates would forgive us for allowing so many of their leaders to be killed off.”

“HOW DID YOU EVEN GET ONTO MY SHIP!?” She howls.

“Oh gee, how did three ranking SOUL officers get onto the SOUL flagship in the absence of any officers who could tell us to fuck off? We flew right in!”The first voice sounds delightfully pleased with itself.

“A-Amos told them we were reinforcements in case things turned u-ugly...”

General Hatsheput sighs happily, clasping her hands together, “It's so nice to see SOUL doing what it's supposed to do! Yes, we might not even have to ask the media to edit this story, it's proof that SOUL is capable of self-policing and WHOLLY answerable to the Jovian government instead of to its commanding General!”

Fairchild stares at her as though she's grown a second head, “Y-you can't do this publicly. You wouldn't dare. Think of the MORALE effect! SOUL...no, the UJCIDF...would never recover!”

General Hatsheput's smile only widens, “Everyone who's served under you will understand, and when the extent of your crimes are revealed, the difficulties we've had during this war and with the implementation of SOUL will be completely understandable. It's troubling to know someone has an unpleasant cancer, but gladdening to know that the tumor was successfully removed.”

“I made SOUL what it is!” Fairchild growls, her clothes wet with blood from her severed fingers, only sheer, animalistic anger seemingly keeping her from fainting with agony.

“Your personal army.” You note, “Which it isn't...sorry, it isn't, right?” You look at Hatsheput and Luxol, who both nod in agreement.

“I conquered Qu'lir!” Fairchild roars. “I made the Belt safe!”

Luxol sighs theatrically, “No. General Oman's troops stationed on Qu'lir along with Major Wedge's SOUL unit conquered Qu'lir. You just showed up at the end and tried to take credit for it. How stupid do you think we are? How stupid do you think my father is? Do you really believe anyone important was fooled?”

“You tried to sabotage my ship and my mission to get rid of me and Roarke Starwind.” Regina Hatsheput huffs, “You didn't make the Belt safe, he did! By defeating you and your pawns!” She points at you.

Fairchild snarls, “You have no proof! No proof of anything! Make all of the accusations you like, you have no evidence I've done anything wrong!”

“On the contrary.” General Hatsheput takes out her PC, and activates a holoscreen.

General Fairchild stares at it, “What...is that?”

“That.” General Hatsheput explains patiently, “Is a bill. Specifically a thorough and complete accounting of all the damage you have done to UJCIDF property over the years. That furnishings fund your ships come with isn't part of your salary, it's not for you, it comes from the taxpaying citizens of Jupiter's colonies, to maintain our ships in good order. Credits you have been wasting and thus, indirectly, stolen from the taxpayer.”

“Indirectly is a matter of perspective.” Colonel Luxol notes.

“Vandalism.” Fairchild's voice is flat with disgust, “You're putting me on trial for vandalism.”

“Oh no!” General Hatsheput titters, “That would be ridiculous, one little fine...well, not so little, you have VERY expensive taste...”

“Hey, who dented this bulkhead?” Garret Luxol remarks over Fairchild's PC. You suddenly understand why she was limping. You'd wager it's the one near the comms station that she kicked.

“...And very little restraint. Anyway, one little fine and you would be back to duty. Only, a bill passed by the Senate approximately fourteen years ago, the Colonial Readiness and Upkeep Act, contains a provision whereby excessive vandalism of UJCIDF property is upgraded from vandalism to sabotage. Now, given that you never bothered to find an excuse for the fact that former Lieutenant Farragut's room was torched and had to be completely reupholstered shortly after her...ahem...retirement...and the fact that I can attest personally to the fact that the Jaburo's command desk was damaged when I got it...oh, and the security camera footage showing you breaking several desks, I think it's a rather open and shut case. Sabotage, by the way, carries a mandatory prison sentence unless it can be proven that it was done under threat of blackmail or coercion. Oh, you won't be there for the rest of your life, but you won't be able to threaten, bribe, or blackmail anyone while we finish making sure that the evidence we have linking you to several more serious crimes is completely legitimate, which it already seems to be. Missing S-Slayers, the death of a UJCIDF General, whatever you did to erase the fact that Bethany Cabot PRIOR to being made your aide was in military prison for the gruesome things she did to 'teach a lesson' to local farmers who protested the establishment of a military base on their planet...oh yes, and the rapes, the numerous reported rapes by frightened young women who mysteriously recanted their testimony the moment they realized they would have to face you again. Ah! And how could I forget your involvement with a prison colony on Titan using the same technology that the Green Skulls CONVENIENTLY had after they CONVENIENTLY acquired an S-Slayer and former Martian Commodore Rashad Abujamal CONVENIENTLY happened to possess and use on his betrothed after murdering her father. He was a close ally of yours, wasn't he? At least, before you hung him out to dry. Oh, and the fact that there is footage of you ordering a detachment of those Avalonian PoWs, along with their mecha...which absolutely should NOT have been kept at a prison camp in the first place...to Europa, where they attempted to attack the Senate in session this morning.” She smiles, “Chairman Luxol sends his compliments, King Roarke, and expresses his personal fond wishes for your nuptials and regret at not being able to attend.”

“H-how?” Fairchild stammers, then she looks over your shoulder, and grows as stiff as a board, her face turning white. A hopeful smile spreads across it as Clemmy marches past you in her white uniform, her face determined, “C-Clemmy? You...you're here to save me? Even now? Oh thank you, thank y-!”

Clemmy unhesitatingly lifts her left arm and slams her open palm across Fairchild's cheek so hard it knocks her off balance and sends her stumbling back, her injured leg giving out and dropping her to the floor, “How could you, Fairy? How could you!?” Her lower lip quivers, “Even today, you have to try and spoil everything! Why couldn't you just be happy for me!? Today was my wedding day! My wedding day!”

“Y-you ungrateful little bitch!” Fairchild snarls, clutching her face. She surges back to her feet, lifting her cane to strike, but Clemmy is faster, and this time it's not an open hand she uses. It's her fist. Blood sprays into the air from Fairchild's busted lip, and a tooth flies out of her mouth.

“I get it now. You didn't save me because you're a good person, or because we're friends. You just wanted to use me, just like...just like that man...” Clemmy's voice is dazed. She shakes her head, and clenches her fist, tears trickling down her face, “Y-you never saw me as...as a person at all, d-d-did you? I HATE you, Fairy! I never want to see you again!” She turns and marches away.

It's a mistake. Fairchild lunges for her dropped cane, and whips the cover off the narrow, stiletto-like blade inside it. Apparently she did learn something from Colonel Stern. It's not enough, not remotely enough.

As she lunges, you're already in motion. You stiffen your hand into a blade and bring it down on her wrist. She screams in pain as the weapon drops from her hand, but you're not done. Fuck the law, they can have her when you're done, maybe, but NOBODY tries to stab your wife and gets to keep that hand, “Another woman you've hurt for the last time.” Your voice is a chainsaw growl, low and ominous.

She snarls defiantly at you. “These women you keep talking about, do you think they can still wound me? Don't you understand? I've grown past that! I realized something, after you slaughtered Bethany for the crime of loving me with such beautifully foolish intensity. I realized these wounds you've given me are my armor, my weapons, I grow stronger each time you strike me. Do you know why?” She strains against your grip as you grab her wrist, bend her elbow outwards, and twist her arm sharply to the side, her words coming as fast and sharp as bullets from a gatling gun, “Because I have a cause! I'm keeping the promise I made to your mother! She had the potential to be a hero, but the trauma she endured was too great, and she CHOSE to fade into obscurity! But I loved her enough to take up her mantle, unworthy though I was, and swore to protect Jupiter myself! I vowed to make sure Jupiter endures forever! Everything I have done was towards that end! Terra will never have cause to destroy Jupiter so long as I make sure we're useful and the leash is tiAAAAAAIIEEE!”

You brutally hammer her elbow once with your other fist. Her elbow pops like a twig snapped underfoot, twisting, the tissue ripping. From the grinding sound, you know the bones are shattered into countless splinters, and as you pull your fist back blood drips from where bone shards stick out through her skin in nearly a dozen places. Her arm is more than useless, it's gone unless she gets immediate medical attention. You don't care. Her body twitches from the electric currents that race through it, but her eyes are still conscious and hateful.

You draw back your fist and slug her so hard her teeth shower like pebbles tossed up by the wheels of a groundcar, rattling across the floor, obliterating the bone structure of that carefully maintained face and sending her flying, body momentarily horizontal, before she crashes unconscious to the floor.

“Grow stronger from that.” You start forward, to put your foot on her throat and end her miserable existence, but are drawn up short by Trevor Luxol's hand on your shoulder.

“Enough, King Roarke. She's still a Jovian officer.” He sounds understandably nervous, and the Jovian troops inching forward to sort of try to halfheartedly put themselves between you and the unconscious General look absolutely terrified, “She's committed capital crimes, we all know it, let her be tried under Jovian law and legally put to death. Besides, isn't this too quick? She probably wants it this way, that's why she provoked you.” He looks at her arm, "The muscle tissue is completely shredded, and her other one is missing fingers, not to mention what you did to her face...she'll need a tube in her throat just to keep breathing...do you really want her to just pass on while unconscious? You casually shrug his hand off your shoulder, but stop moving forward, “Isn't it bad luck to kill someone on one's wedding day?” You ask, looking upwards at the roof of the mechbay.

You see Luxol visibly relax, “I do believe it is.” He replies, relief not entirely hidden in his voice.

“Add another count of attempted murder to her charges. You all saw it. Two counts, she drew that gun on me, then tried to stab my queen.” You announce, “Open and shut case, guaranteed prison time, make it happen while you prove the rest.”

You see Clemmy give you a tearful smile. You can tell she wants to say something, but for once she's being patient.

Your blood boils just thinking of that wicked bitch trying to hurt the girl she professed to want so badly, “...And when you do find her guilty, I demand justice for the wrongs she's done to my people. For Suleiman 1. After all, the Suleiman colonies are legally mine.” Suleiman 1 wasn't at the time, but that's a technicality, “As the heir to Sheikh Ahmad's properties and the husband of his eldest daughter, and as someone who rescued those people from the Green Skulls, I demand the right to execute her personally.”

You see the Colonel blanch.

You raise your eyebrow, “Is that too barbaric for you? Can you deny she deserves it?”

He shakes his head, “It's unquestionably barbaric, but...we are on your colony and circumstances are...complicated. I'll speak to my father, at least. I doubt he's inclined to be lenient to her in any case.” He tries to reassure you. There's a pause, then he asks quietly, “Some of the soldiers were whispering that the Harpy that attacked the stadium was defeated by you.”

You nod.

“That you beat it down with your bare hands. That you...that you punched out a mech without even your gloves on.” His voice is uneasy.

“You strike me as the sort of commander who has faith in his own men, Colonel. It's a good trait to have, especially when they tell you the truth.” You shrug.

“By Jove...” He whispers, his normally unflappable face pale and tinged with sweat.

You pat him on the shoulder, “Make sure your father hears my request from you. I want him to take it seriously.” With that, you walk away as Fairchild's ruined body is loaded onto a gurney. You know that when she wakes up, it will be to unimaginable agony and the walls of a prison hospital.

[Continued]

“Considerably more than two, we all heard her order the Iulia Maesa to fire on the colony, and attacking with mecha and explicitly demanding they kill everyone present...at best, her advocate in court can plead mental illness, but still, the pre-existing pattern will call that into question. Regardless, she's finished as an officer. This investigation has been going on for a long, long time, Roarke...er, King Roarke...” Regina smiles awkwardly, trying not to look at the mess you've made of Fairchild, “But thanks to you it all finally went somewhere. You foiled her schemes and made her so angry she couldn't cover her tracks properly anymore. Who knows how many people you saved? Or how many you've avenged?”

Your heart goes out to the poor woman, “Roarke will do. We're friends, aren't we? After all, I couldn't have beaten the Green Skulls without the Jaburo.”

Her smile gains a little more life, “Thank you, Roarke. For everything. Since Phaeton is a proper nation now, Mohammed and I...well...we have a lot more options, and, um, and one of those really...the...the timing couldn't be better.” She puts a hand on her stomach, “We're not sure yet, but...” She blushes and looks away, “It could just be stress my body is reacting to, we'll know soon enough.”

“Congratulations.” You remark, “Don't overwork yourself, you've done more than enough.”

She sighs, “She was always a bitter little girl, even at the Academy. Always trying so hard, always looking down on everyone else. I'm sure she had a soul once, but whether or not all of the twistiness inside her was her own doing or not, it's the choices she made that led her here...but part of me wishes I'd reached out to her when we were still children.”

You shake your head, “I understand, but I don't think it would have helped. I'm not the best at knowing what other people are thinking, but it seems to me that having people she thought she cared about didn't do anything to fix what was wrong with her. I bet my mother tried to do just that, and look how things turned out.”

She sighs and nods, then perks up abruptly, “Oh, right, that reminds me!” She looks over your shoulder, “Before you pounce on your husband, miss former Lieutenant, your full pension was finally approved. A very angry Martian woman left over thirty extremely harsh complaints with the department that handles such things. I'll spare you the very personally insulting things she said to those pure bureaucrats, but she said something about you being forced into menial labor and it being undignified given your station. You might want to thank her at some point. I'll leave you to your husband. Be nice to him now.” She shoves your shoulder lightly, and you feel Clemmy's arms wrap around you from behind.

It's been much more than ten threads since we were on /tg/. You managed to negotiate to REMOVE AVALON from the Belt in exchange for recognition as an independent nation, which benefits Mars and Jupiter because they don't have to spend their resources defending it or strategically trying to counterbalance each other. Since you only have one real rival left in the Belt, and official recognition as a SSL member state, you declared yourself Pirate King.

The blonde woman's face is wet with tears as she nuzzles your neck, “R-Roarkey, I'm so sorry, I didn't want it to end up like this...”

“There isn't anything to be sorry about, you did nothing wrong, and you know it. Come on, don't blame yourself for her choices, you're better than that.

“This isn't how I thought our wedding day would go...” She mumbles, “I...I thought it would be happy...you must be miserable with all of this trouble.”

“Not at all.” NOPE! In fact, punching Fairchild made you feel absolutely fantastic once you get past the sheer anger. It's been a really good day, in retrospect, even by the standards of wedding days. “I got to fight for you, and that's always worth it.”

She sniffles, then wails, sobbing into your shoulder. The tears are mixed, somewhere between sad and happy, “Y-you w-w-were fantastic. So brave and...and you really punched out a mech, didn't you? I wasn't hallucinating, was I? I'm so lucky, such a lucky girl to have a husband like you.” She nuzzles you.

“Roarke!” Samantha slips through the crowd and hugs you from the front while Clemmy growls in quiet complaint, “I...I saw everything and heard it all...you were so heroic, and...and we finally beat her, didn't we? I almost can't believe it.” She rests her head on your chest, smushing her cheek against your pectoral muscles with a happy sigh.

“Ahem. Girls. Neither of you is permitted to steal our dear husband. Remember, tonight, all six of us are sharing him. Now, it took some research and creativity...” Fatima snuggles up against your side.

“Oui. We 'ad to look at dirty pictures, non?” Loriette is abruptly on your other side, and Fatima barely hides her scowl as the four women surround you, “It was tres amusing, but we found ways.”

Samantha grumbles, “I can't believe I have to deal with naked girls on my wedding night...it's so gross.”

Fatima pats her head, “This is for Roarke, remember that. Besides, YOU always seem to find ways to sneak him off and steal him, more than your fair share. For this one night, we will all pleasure him together, working as a squad. It's good for teamwork. Besides, since you made your feelings about women plain...and honestly, I agree...we're doing this in a hot tub. The steam should be more than sufficient, and cool drinks will be provided.”

“Just think of it as a reverse gangbang.” Clemmy chirps, her predatory smile right by your ear.

Loriette giggles.

Colonel Luxol meets your eye, reading the situation at a glance, and gives you a salute of profound respect.

You need that support. For all you've been through today, your greatest challenge yet lies ahead. Tonight is a six-on-one battle against aces in the martial art of womanhood.

By the way, and I meant to make this announcement earlier and forgot, about running late...unfortunately, it will keep happening. You see, the business I work for is expanding, and with it so do my responsibilities.

When this quest began I got off work at 7:00 EST. This has been pushed back, and pushed back, and as of Monday I'll officially be working until 9:00 PM EST every weekday. However, games will run later, and I might run more on the weekends. I'm sorry about this, but...it's the way the business world works. He who stays late, gets paid great.

>>1826079

>>
>>1826079
The behind the scene rolls are one, but more along the lines of what could fairchild put on the table? Stuff like taking on Cabot and Joe likely changed things up a lot, and there is also Caesar, but I am sure there are other things I missed too.
>>
>>1826081

Oh, well, honestly the Rose Queen wasn't QUITE entirely statted but I still had that fight rolled out with the Anseis and Flowerhorn.

I say "fight" but it was sort of a massacre, just a huge slathering of dice.

Also Samantha versus the one Mustang Commando. Fatima versus the other Mustang Commando you saw for yourselves.

The space stuff was pure fluff. Although SOUL C was able to do that because you'd established a precedent for them being superb commandos during the Qu'lir arc.
>>
>>1826082

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that, could you please explain?

>>1826081

Oh, right, the secret boss. This one had the most linear decision yet. Fighting Bluegill Joe was a given, but Bluegill Joe with the S-Lionfish was the secret boss himself. You chose to fight him in the S-Lionfish instead of just the Blue Fencer, remember?
>>
>>1826090
I do, I just forgot that it was the secret boss. As far as other questions, How did the people who knew we we're training in void fist react to our display? Particularly the people we haven't met yet.
>>
>>1826090
Well. An obvious one would be Cabot. If we didn't kill her, she could have caused trouble during this or even tried to assassinate us or a wife.
Another would have been things like Caesar not going to titan.
Basically, Fairchild came to Auditorium with a huge plan with lots of fail safes. What would a 'exactly as planned' Fairchild fight been like?
>>
>>1826093
Probably with wedding ruined, official sanctions against Phaeton from both the Martian and Jove contigents, and Roarke in chains and broken.
>>
>>1826090

Oh, what a beautiful morning!

You wake up feeling completely rested and shockingly stress-free, stretch contentedly, and sigh happily. You're so rested that you don't even want to snooze despite the cushion of female flesh all around you. You're bright, alert, and full of energy for the day ahead.

“I got to punch Fairchild on my wedding day.” You remark to no one in particular, all six of the women surrounding you still thoroughly exhausted. At least one is snoring. You gently dislodge Samantha, wrapped in a blanket because of her shyness with anyone but you seeing her body, from where she's curled up against your chest, and she whines a little in her sleep. Getting your head out from Red Siren's bust is more difficult, she fell asleep with her fingers wound in your hair. You've never had to do so little work in the bedroom as you did last night with all six of them taking care of you, it was a welcome change, although you wouldn't want it to be the new norm.

You get up, get cleaned up, dress, and shrug on your familiar leather jacket. Soft arms tug on the hem, and as you turn around Karen slips right into your arms with a sleepy smile, completely naked, “Ah...Roarke...” She mumbles, nuzzling your shoulder.

“Good morning, sleepyhead.” You ruffle her hair, hanging long and loose for once.

“Mmmmn...gotta get to the bay and...and do stuff.” She mumbles, shuffling towards the door.

“Wait, Karen, your clothes!” You hurriedly stop her.

“Nnnh?” She blinks at you blearily, “You're all fuzzy. Oh, right.” She grabs her glasses from the bedside table and puts them on. She reaches for her clothes, which are neatly thrown in an untidy pile on the floor with everyone else's...except Samantha's and Fatima's, which are folded neatly, but you stop her.

“Go rest. Take the day off.” You instruct her firmly.

“Wha?” She frowns, “Why?”

“Because working on your wedding day is something you shouldn't have had to do, so the best I can do is make sure you don't work the day after.” You insist.

“But the Kaiser!” She protests blearily.

“The Kaiser is just fine.” You push her back towards the massive bed, and she sits down on its edge, pouting.

“Are people going to be calling me Queen Karen now?” She makes a face, “It's weird, I'm not sure I like it.”

“Tell them not to and they won't do it.” You throw a blanket over her.

She grumbles and curls up, “I bet Rosita likes being called 'Your Majesty'...”

“She does.” You admit, patting her head, “Sleep. Then go have fun. I have a little work to do and then I can relax.” After all, Meridian is still out there, somewhere. You're not sure if the Gentleman stuck around or not, it doesn't seem like he came here to do anything but stick his nose into your wedding and get in Meridian's way.

It's amazing how little stress you have right now. Life is so good, you hadn't even realized how much the spectre of Fairchild looming over the Belt had annoyed you. The only question is, what to do first?

Hey just jumping into the conversation, sorry, but given the success we've had with modified martian vessels, filling a fast attack and maneuver roll that the Jovians lack in while being more upgunned/armored (for the size of it anyway) than their martian equivalent (and a doctrinal focus on heavy elite/superiority or harassment mecha compliments) would buying more aging vessels, more for their base as a final modified product, be good. I imagine that mars wants to further the "special" relationship and help promote the defeat of avalonian interests in the belt, while at the same time getting rid of second line ships (or just getting the capital to upgrade to the next gen). All this giving them a one up on their frenemies the Jovians whilst not harming their realtionship. In case my bias was unlcear I really like where the rhinehawk went as a ship and feel we should keep on the path so to speak (not that our navy, and its specializations and irregularities produced by eccentric captains and alot of our ships being prize ships, will be uniform). That and even though modifying a ships instead of producing them seems half assed ya got to take a realistic look at your production abilities, and realize that any investment takes away from another one (ex. mecha). Down the line making bad ass vessel from scratch is desired, but for now how about a bit more of what we know and love?

You decide to deal with Rebecca first. After all, Lysa is recovering from being shot. Thankfully with modern medicine she shouldn't have any scars from this, but still, it has to be traumatizing to her. So you board the Rhinehawk, and make your way to its brig. Putting her here was a calculated choice, it minimizes her exposure to the general mass of people on the colony itself, it puts her where you know your own people are guarding her, and it's a place you know is secure.

The downside is that you have to wade through an awful lot of back-patting over what you did to Fairchild. Everyone from Suleiman 1 seems intent on seeking you out and shaking your hand. It's a little overwhelming, and makes the trip take several times as long as it needed to.

The clear plasteel cells don't offer much privacy, and from some distance away you can see Rebecca Lorde huddled in a corner with her knees drawn up against her chest, staring blankly at nothing. You swipe your fingerprint through the scanner...and find out that the door is already unlocked. As you step inside, you see why, there's a panel loosened that must allow access to the mechanism somehow.

“I was bored.” She says tonelessly, “I thought about running again, but there's no point. Where would I even go?” She shakes her head, “You didn't need to come here. I've made up my mind, I'll just accept my death and finally get to rest in peace. I've committed treason, not once, but many times, it's a fair price to pay for my sins.”

You're a bit taken aback by how serious she is, “Why would you do that?”

She looks askance at you, “Why? Why!? Do you know what she does to people? She threw me away before, because I didn't have family she could use as leverage, but she must have found out about Bruce somehow. Testifying against her in any way will mean she uses her connections to Terra, to bring them here and let them take Bruce.” Her hands tighten into fists. “He told me everything. All about how his...tribe...stayed in their homeland even after the nuclear war. How they survived even when nature itself turned against them. How they clawed a living from the land. He's so taciturn it took him a while to open up, but he did, like a geode. He told me how the last of his people died, and how he escaped Terra, and why they want him. What the secret he holds is. They would stop at nothing to get him back.”

“General Hermione Fairchild was arrested yesterday, she's guaranteed to be in prison for a long, long time. The UJCIDF has a long list of reasons to make sure she never has any power over anyone, ever again.” You inform her.

She just stares at you, “How? Since when? I thought she was at the very top of their military structure.”

You shrug, “She made some mistakes, like trying to kill me, my wives, and a bunch of Jovian officers...oh, and the whole colony, that too...and was punished for it. Listen, Rebecca, you don't have to be afraid of her anymore. She can't hurt you, or anyone under my protection. I am the King of Phaeton, YOUR king, and I want to hear from your own lips what happened.”

Her mouth quivers, “But Bruce...”

“He was willing to stab me to protect you, do you think he would be happy if you just died? Especially if it was because you thought he wasn't strong enough to protect both of you?” You shake your head sadly.

She bites her lip, “That isn't fair.”

You nod in agreement, “I am still a space pirate, that's to be expected. What exactly is it about Bruce that's so special?”

She shakes her head, “For your sake, I can't tell you that, not yet, not without his permission and not when it isn't relevant. You would just see it as an opportunity, at worst, and as best it would be something to worry about. Let's just say the method of his escape is why the Terrans will stop at nothing to retrieve him, but they don't have many agents out this far from Earth, I think they were relying on General Fairchild to scout for them and she was keeping Bruce's custody a secret to use against them, until something changed and she decided to try to get rid of him along with the Jaburo. Maybe she realized they might just have her killed for betraying them, I don't know.”

“How does a Paladin of Avalon come to be working for them?” You inquire.

Her head jerks back as if slapped, “I say, when did you hear that!?” She protests, eyes wide and her careful Jovian accent suddenly gone.

“From a man named Jonathan Gates, who called himself the Gentleman.” You reply.

She groans, “Damn him. I hoped nobody would ever find out.” Her shoulders slump, “I wish I had never agreed to that.”

You gesture impatiently for her to continue.

She huffs, “Pirates are rude as well as unfair, I see. Very well. I was nobility on Lorien. Minor nobility, we didn't have much land or money, but we did have a title, and several strong knights. The greatest by far was Sir Jonathan, who was Belegor's prized pupil, and when he was called to become a Paladin it was widely celebrated and brought us great honor, only...” Her nostalgic expression clouds over, “...He refused the call. Decisively. We were shamed, but I volunteered. I had some renown as a fencer, and was reckoned to be a good shot. It was meant purely as a show of good will, to make up for his disgraceful behavior, I never thought I was worthy of it like the others...but the Lady accepted me. She made me a Paladin. I should have felt honored, but honestly, it was so overwhelming. Then I was sent off to war and that...that was awful. It's something I'm ashamed to even think about, but I wasn't suited for that at all, even with my many skills. I had always wanted to explore the galaxy and meet strange, new people, far more than I ever desired to govern, but...”

She shakes her head, “What I learned shook me to my core. The others were all in too much awe of the Lady to really understand what the Great Sidereal War meant, but I wasn't. The Green Men, the Lady's people, wanted to conquer humanity and kill everyone who couldn't be domesticated. What was Avalon but a collection of humans domesticated by a Green Man? The fact that she could be refused by Sir Jonathan proved, to me at least, something that I'd always suspected. She wasn't divine. I don't believe in gods, King Roarke, just very powerful beings that can do things we rationalize as magic because their existence makes us feel tiny and weak. I was terrified at the idea that maybe she had implanted some way to control me or make me lose my own will, but I realized that if I allowed myself to live as a slave, I was already dead. So I waited for my chance.”

“That's remarkably sensible, I thought all of you Paladins were more religious where this Lady of yours is concerned.” You note.

She smiles slightly, “I've always been a skeptic, and my role as a Paladin was more subtle than most of the others, I pride myself on having skills other than piloting even if I'm not as monstrous in combat as most of the rest. Loriette le Kennedy was a good girl, a brave girl, but naive and...a bit gullible. When we faced the monstrous Jovian superweapon known as Megabass, I knew that my life as a Paladin was over. I didn't have the courage to battle the Gas Knights and Saracens and their seemingly limitless resources.

“I know that feeling, I've spent my life being outgunned by them.” You note.

She raises an eyebrow, “You? Outgunned?”

You laugh wryly, “I haven't had the Kaiser for that long. Before that, I was the First Mate of a single ship piloting a Harpy Custom, a Channel-class cruiser could have outmatched us with some luck.”

She laughs, “Remarkable! As I faced down this behemoth, the Megabass, I certainly felt outgunned. Either I would die fighting it, or I would flee from the war. I knew I could not win. Sir Jonathan, too, was discontented with his role as my bodyguard, and we made plans to escape together Well, my Gerard was damaged, and he pulled the cockpit pod from my mech and left it to float in space while we escaped to a nearby colony, and from there to the planet below. I gave him the slip shortly thereafter, which was never hard, I'd been doing it to the castle servants ever since I was a child...but all too swiftly, my curiosity proved my downfall. I was captured by the Jovians as a spy and brought before General Fairchild.”

“I'm amazed you're still in one piece.” You note.

She smiles bitterly, “When it comes to pretty young women, the General had some obvious levers. She never knew I was a Paladin, or I would have been paraded before the people of Jupiter, tortured, and executed. Instead I played at being the naive little acolyte of the Lady, having religious doubts and in need of a mentor. Don't misunderstand, I still suffered terribly at her hands, and did things I will despise her for eternally, but over time she came to trust me. After all, I had no one else. One mistake and she would out me as Avalonian, have me arrested as a spy, and executed before I ever saw the inside of a cell. All I had to do was keep being useful, and freedom came my way one day, after years of service. I believe she was discarding me more than anything else, expecting I would be caught and executed by one faction or another. She had no time for me anymore, anyway, she was so besotted with her blonde ace, the Butcher.” She shakes her head again, “Anyway, when I escaped the wounded Jaburo, it was with no real destination in mind. Like a bird whose cage has been opened, I flew because it was my nature to fly away, even knowing I would likely be destroyed in the ongoing battle. I was at peace, yet...just as it was my nature to escape, it was Bruce's nature to pursue someone he believed had set him up. His strider...sorry, his mech...caught ahold of mine, and ripped it apart as we crashed through the breach the one the Kestrels call 'First Mate' opened in Auditorium's hull.”

“Any chance you saw a Harpy acting strangely at the time?” You ask, hoping against hope that maybe she saw something that would help you unravel the mystery of the First Mate.

She shakes her head, “No, why? I mean, I did see several battling Harpies, but that's not strange, is it?”

You sigh, “No, it isn't. Just wishful thinking. Please, go on.”

Remember that the war was going on for years before the general public became aware of it, partially because it was fought heavily through proxies and on a small scale. “Mmhmm. In the process of him de-limbing my mech, I managed to damage his Warmouth's thrusters with the built-in sword my Pumpkinseed had, and we tumbled together towards the glittering waters below. He landed in the woods, I in the lake, but I ejected and much to my surprise he came after me. We fought for what felt like hours, until at last I was overcome. I don't know why he spared me, I don't think he does either. All I know is, we only had each other for warmth that night, and although every day I swore to myself that I would leave him, make my way to one of the ships, and escape Auditorium...each day I found an excuse not to go. Eventually I realized I didn't want to. I'd found something I'd never known even as a noblewoman. A home. Peace. Love. Contentment. Oh, we had our share of fights and arguments, Bruce was a lot more happy squatting in the woods surviving like a primitive than I was, but it was a good life...and then came the tournament.” Her face clouds over.

“What happened?”

She sighs, “I was contacted by the General. She knew about Bruce, and she used him against me. One last favor, she promised, and if I performed it neither of us would ever hear from her again. I knew there had to be some treachery involved, but I was desperate to keep what I had.”

“You're sure it was the General?” The more rope you have to hang Fairchild with, the better.

She nods firmly, “She used a third-party PC to contact me, but it was definitely her, I'd know her voice anywhere. You don't forget it when you've heard it the way I have, and how terrifying she is when she's angry, even for a completely natural human being. She ordered me to steal a Harpy and assassinate you at the concert.” She glances away uncertainly.

You pick up on the fact that she's not saying something, and stare at her, “What are you hiding?”

She sighs bitterly, “...I said it was a bad plan, I suggested an alternative one. No, I didn't think you could do...what you did...but engaging you directly seemed foolish. If I had to kill you, I wanted to do it in a way where we'd never directly engage each other. It was just something I thought up quickly, and it had its flaws too, but she rejected it out of hand, and insisted it had to be done that way. Killing you at the concert, in front of all those people, directly. I figured perhaps she just wanted to make sure I'd be killed by your soldiers so that what I knew died with me, but I didn't care. I was protecting Bruce, after all.” She looks you in the eye, and smiles, “So, what now?”

Oh, no, her drills had been damaged by Colonel Stern. She ran into SOUL during the battle on Mars, her ship got badly damaged and she lost two drills, then the Duke engaged Colonel Stern so she could escape. The Duke managed to use the sub-arm beam claw on the Oliver to take off one of the S-Lionfish's legs so it would be slowed down and less likely to catch her, then the S-Lionfish destroyed the Oliver's beam shield, which is why it couldn't block during the battle on 16-Psyche.

You stick your head out of the door, and call for one of the guards, “Hey, you. Get the First Mate of Beckingham's crew over here, tell him to pick up his sheila and take her home.” You turn to her, “You're free to go, but I'm having Bruce come to pick you up. You two need to talk this out yourselves.”

She stares at you, “I tried to assassinate you.”

You shrug, “Space pirate. A lot of people have tried to kill me. Besides, you were coerced, and you were protecting him. If you want to make it right, get your hands on a mech halfway worthy of a Paladin, join Beckingham's crew so you can be with Bruce, and try to pay off the damage you did to the stadium grounds. A Paladin using a Harpy is just wrong.” You turn to go, then remember something, “Right, I almost forgot. I'm not technically telling you to steal from the military, but you might want to see if the two of you can get your hands on those...what were they called...Mustang Commandos in the mechbay the Iulia Maesa's shuttles were launching from. It's so easy to lose mecha, you know? I'm sure if someone grabbed them quickly enough the UJCIDF might not have time to retrieve them, or care once they're gone.”

She continues staring, “Is this some sort of a trick?”

You shrug, “If I wanted to execute you, I'd do it. I don't. Just pay me back for this someday, and we'll call it even.” You pause, “Did your alternate plan involve poisoned cotton candy?”

She frowns and shakes her head, “No, that's much too clumsy. It had to be something only you would be using, something you would either ingest or a skin-contact poison that would act slowly enough to have thoroughly sunk in by the time you realized anything was wrong, something that could be applied in a large dose. I was going to mix it into the shampoo you use on your hair.”

You send a message instructing your crew to run a complete chemical analysis on all of your hygiene products. Nobody else uses your shampoo, that's the scary part. Sure, it's possible for someone to accidentally grab your hair brush or use it in lieu of their own, but your mane-grooming products are sacred and nobody else touches them. It would have probably worked if she'd carried out her plan, “Fairchild, your temper is your own worst enemy.” You remark cheerfully to yourself, taking the Kaiser back down to Auditorium and opting to take advantage of the nice day by walking to the hospital where Lysa Fleur is currently undergoing treatment.

You briefly consider picking up a gift for her, but decide against it. It would be weird, you don't know her that well, and both of you have been a major pebble in the other's shoe before.

When you arrive, and state what you're here for, the nurses usher you in with some degree of hesitant awe, one of them touching your shoulder as if expecting an electric shock and then scampering away. You hear two others whispering, something about 'with his bare hands'. One sighs longingly. You put them out of your mind, and enter Lysa Fleur's room.

The girl sits, dwarfed by the size of her bed and its pillows. Flowers, plush animals, and other such gifts cover every flat surface around the bed on three sides, creating the appearance of some sort of exotic shrine. Her dainty hands rest lightly on the embroidered comforter, just barely protruding from the long sleeves of her fluffy, pink pajamas, “Good morning, your majesty.” She bows her head lightly, and winces as the motion puts pressure on her midsection.

“Don't strain yourself.” You insist.

“I assure you, I will be perfectly fine. I recover remarkably quickly.” She puts a finger to her lips, “Let's keep our voices soft, shall we?”

Keith is asleep in a chair in the corner, with a pillow behind his head and a book in his hand.

She smiles fondly at him, then looks measuringly at you, “This isn't just a social visit, is it? You're not the type, and besides...one of your wives went all the way to Qu'lir to find three of my sisters. I interrogated them thoroughly about their encounter. A lot of questions were asked about my family, is there something you would like to know?”

“Seriously, why Keith?” You ask, jokingly.

She laughs softly, “You're an awful villain, Roarke Starwind. His father was a famous man, and his existence was literally brought to fruition from a frozen embryo in the hopes that he could become a new figurehead hero for the SSL. Of course, when another way was found...things changed.” She sighs, “Yet he never let it break him. I adore Keith completely. He never crumbled under that weight and collapsed into cynicism the way Rudolph Merrow's son did.”

“Caesar is a good man, and has my respect.” Your voice is stern.

“Yes, but you both have your share of personality problems. I suppose everyone does, but your blind you to his, just as they blind you to Keith's strengths. Keith is always true to himself, to his passions, to his virtues, and he does his best to turn his flaws into strengths. He's everything I love about the human race. He puts every scrap of himself into everything he does, and when it goes badly he tries to learn from it.” She reaches over and pets his head, “The him you see isn't the him I see. When I look at him, I see someone who will, when called upon, become a hero without sacrificing what makes him the person I love. A shield between mankind and evil. A sword whose gleaming blade pierces the darkness.”

“His mech doesn't even have shields.” You point out.

Her face twists into a grumpy frown, “We're...we're working on that. He can be amazingly stubborn, and while normally I adore that too occasionally he could stand to listen to my advice just a little bit more.”

“Sure, sure, so what about Project Neverland?” You ask casually.

You could hear a pin drop in that room, it's so silent. Her expression doesn't change, the small smile, the tired eyes, but it's frozen, like a mask. Finally she reaches up and rubs her temples, “You know about Project Neverland?”

You nod.

“So, that's why you were investigating my sisters.” She shakes her head slowly.

“The pictures on the walls of Fairchild's house made her look awfully like an only child, yet she has all of these nieces who somehow made it into SOUL.” You remark.

She covers her face with her hands, “No, no...what did I miss? I scrubbed 16-Psyche when we left.”

Jovian culture does take a fair number of cues from ancient Rome.

Ironically, that's a similar problem to the one Tabitha Roosevelt had, in that scandal with her father's top-ranked knight and their affair. Because of their age difference, and her being socially viewed as the maiden heir of her house at the time, it certainly LOOKED like she was the passive or submitting partner in the relationship, and that's what was scandalous. Once she became the house head and a veteran Paladin if she chose to fuck one of her servants discreetly it would be considered a lot less improper because she's be assumed to have the power in that relationship (it would still screw up her marriage prospects, but there's only one Paladin with a wife and that's Duke Eustace).

Better hope she can't hear us anon.

Except Roarke has never suspected that? Even if he did, he'd talk to Rosita about it first.
>>
>>1828748
More a case of Rosita being her older sister since she was a prototype. Like a mech pilot protoman.
>>
>>1828748
jesus christ not every chick is related to each other god damn.
also rosita has an actual sister who is dating Amos, and we have met her in character, stop being retarded anon.
>>
>>1828747
I'm just saying she doesn't need to know that's ALL we have.
>>
>>1828757
Actually, the Biggs logs had said something on those lines. Rosita was the prototype. Her age and the time frame fit. Including her story. Roarke assumed as much in character as well.
>>
>>1828759
But you are still telling her about the most important part of it.
>>
>>1828753

The pink ones are clones with the gene moded Rosita as the template.

>>1828754
It was part of Dr. Biggs journal and Roake knows Rosita's family history.

>>1828756

As the base template its a mother daughter relationship.

>>1828757
Go read the Journal again. The prototype that Fairy's mother created was made by using genemoding the unborn child of one of her pregnant assistants. The distinct hair color made the assistant's husband believe that his wife had cheated on him.

“What Gerard Biggs did was unforgivable, regardless of the knowledge he hoped to achieve. I found a journal he hid in his office.” You inform her gravely.

Her face twists, “Something so low-tech, I never would have expected it of him.” She shivers, takes a deep breath, then says plainly, “Perhaps you understand the kinship I feel with Keith, now, although my origins are far less natural than his. Our creations were both sinful. His father, the hero Floyd Beck, had a girlfriend in the early days of the Solar System's involvement in the Great Sidereal War. They created, and preserved, a child together, planning to raise him when the peace they desired had been won. Unfortunately, she was killed, and Floyd became one of humanity's foremost aces in his quest for revenge, fell in love again, and was doomed by it. Sometimes, I fear his love for me is genetic, despite knowing how remarkably unlikely that is, for Ji Xifeng is the closest thing I have to a mother.” She smiles, a heartbreakingly sad smile, “Spiritually, at least. Like my sisters, I have no true parents. I was born in a glass tube, part of the twelfth iteration of Project Neverland, Series L. We were engineered to protect mankind, to be the warriors of a new age.” She shakes her head, “What hubris, can you not see it? Were the Green Men not enough of a lesson? Unstable as they were, from being created so far from mankind, to do so much...humanity should have learned. I, like my sisters, am what you would call a super-soldier in the fiction of a previous age, one who is genetically predisposed towards martial excellence, one to whom fighting comes as naturally as walking.”

“So, it's as I expected.” You remark.

She nods, “Precisely. I call myself Hermione Fairchild's niece, but that isn't quite true. She is an exact clone of her mother, Valerie Fairchild, who provided much of the financing for Project Neverland, the creation of genetically-engineered super-soldiers to protect mankind. As we are modified, enhanced human beings that used her genetic material to fill in the gaps...less so in the case of Subject Zero, who was a regular fetus implanted with the modifications rather than one grown with them from the beginning...it would be more correct to call Hermione Fairchild our least talented sister.”

“I wish I'd known when I confronted her, I could have used that information.” You joke.

>>
Ok, I'll admit I was a bit wrong on the genetic relationship.

That means there's at least 11 iterations out there.

She laughs, “You are truly incorrigible. I heard she was arrested...and apparently, still unconcious. You nearly killed her, and her arm had to be amputated.”

“Good.” You reply grimly.

“It's an arm that won't strike my Keith ever again.” She replies, just as grimly.

“So, Subject Zero...” You look around, “That would be someone with pink hair and a fondness for flowers, I'm guessing? It fits a theme I'm noticing.”

She smiles softly, “A kind and wonderful older sister, spared some of the burden of being us. One who is, thankfully, happily married. May the Lord bless her and her union.” Her smile fades as she continues, “...After the failure of the K Series, Valerie Fairchild spearheaded the project and after her death in an unexplained fire on her estate it was expected we would simply be...put down. After all, in the post-war era it would take exceptional circumstances for gene-modded soldiers to be accepted, particularly those designed to be superior to humans. Superior, it's such a silly word, isn't it? As if we're perfect, as if just because something comes easily to us, there aren't humans who naturally possess the same talent. The perfect soldier cannot be bottled, only shaped on the anvil of life. That's something I've come to wholeheartedly believe after the events on Qu'lir, where my sisters lost to a girl who out-thought them and a superhuman genius died to mankind's blunt supremacy at designing instruments of destruction.”

She coughs, “My apologies, that tangent stems from some unpleasant memories. It's difficult to talk about this, but I'll try. The Megabass required a pilot, and we were sent to see whether it was possible for us to utilize it in battle. The Megabass is a grossly powerful, inefficient monstrosity, yet it is as much a concept of future wars as it is a weapon, something to test the limits of human possibility. To create wars that require as few soldiers as possible.” She chuckles, “Do you want to know a secret? All of us were terrified we would succeed. After all, there was only one Megabass. It only needed one pilot. What would become of the rest of us, unwanted, unneeded, our lives carelessly thrown away to test the limits of our mental capabilities? We couldn't be permitted to exist as a caste, a record to mankind's sins. That was why the technology for those headbands you've been so troubled by was created. We were to be walking biological weapons, acting at the behest of the masters of the SSL. Those who were not required would surely be culled. Yet if we failed, we would also be culled, and while we existed, more and more of us died like animals. Gerard Biggs fancied himself to be like a father to us, but no father has ever been so cruel."

We should ask her if rosita knows about her origins and her connection with her.

>>1828831
Fuck no.

She shudders, clutching herself, “Sometimes, when I'm asleep, I dream I'm back in that place. I watched so many of us die, die, die without purpose or reason, going from my beloved sisters to...to chunks of blood, of organs, of meat. Smiles I had loved becoming slack and idiotic as their brains burned out from neural overload. Voices capable of such beautiful song...he taught us about singing, about art and culture, apparently as an experiment itself...screaming themselves hoarse as we died testing the limits of our reflexes and combat skills in games designed to be unwinnable. If he could dissect one of us to learn some minor fact, he would do it promptly, thoughtlessly, without hesitation and bearing a clear conscience. Nothing, nothing is more terrifying than a true believer in their cause, always remember that. Always fear it. I found out later that he had a son, who he named as if to claim ownership of and then promptly disposed of. It didn't surprise me.” She closes her eyes, tilting her head back.

“I'm sorry for bringing up these memories.” Surprisingly, you mean it.

“Memories, good or bad, are part of who we are, Roarke Starwind. If you hadn't suffered what you had, perhaps today the Green Skulls would rule the belt for a few monstrous months before SOUL purged them from the galaxy and set Hermione Fairchild upon a guided course to the Planetary Chairman's seat?” She clenches her hands into fists. “No, he was his own downfall. His lust for knowledge, his isolation from the human race, his own sense of superiority...by the end, he was convinced that he loved us like his own children, believed in us, that there was something fatherly about what he was doing. We played along. Even as we died, we played along. I still remember the look on his face, the first time I called him 'father'...” She shudders. “We knew there was no future. To fail was to die. To succeed was to die, or to exist in a living death for the chosen pilot. To persist was to die slowly, one by one. Besides, it was no use. The ability to control the Megabass was not something that could be programmed into a human being, a question of...of hardware. To empty one's mind sufficiently, to naturally control so many drones, to be so dissolute and so focused all at once, it can't be taught, only stumbled upon naturally through the right mindset. It was software, something any human could do if they simply thought the right way, but thinking in the correct patterns was astronomically unlikely. That is why General Jersey Coop was something we predicted long before the scientists did, long before Gerard Biggs did, but we stayed quiet.”

“Until you escaped.” You prompt.

You are right. Now that i think about it this would make Fairy our sister-in-law to. A very unpleasant thought.

She nods, “With walls closing in on all sides, we had no choice but to defend ourselves. Smothering Gerard Biggs with filial affection, we relaxed his guard...and secretly modified the test frame we used for combat simulations, deactivating its ability to be shut down remotely. It was no super-mech, just a spare Thoroughbred-MP, but then, you know how effective a sturdy combat frame can be when one is talented and desperate, don't you? In case you're wondering, we left it behind. Too many girls had died in it. Out of curiosity, I asked around, I believe one of the Green Skulls' boys was piloting it when you sacked 16-Psyche, and it ended up as the basis for Captain Oda's new mech. I would not inform him of its history if I were you. Let it do some noble work in his hands.” She shakes her heads, “Tangents again, sometimes I swear I was made wrongly, I feel so...bloodstained...remembering what we did. Initiating a lockdown, gassing the habitation quarters, using the test frame armed with a club and makeshift explosives to destroy the main generator for the colony containing the military base where most of the guards lived and let the cold of space inside. It was the first time I ever committed mass murder, but it was for the sake of surviving, for the sake of us having a future. I had no choice. I destroyed the main anti-ship cannons on the station, to make sure any surviving workers who had been in hiding couldn't shoot us down as we fled. We stormed the second colony, took Gerard Biggs hostage, used his authority to hijack a military cruiser, and fled. From there, we scattered, mostly ending up with Hermione Fairchild, but...”

She takes a shuddery breath, “I'm not boasting when I say that pretty, charismatic, superhumanly talented girls can find a welcome in all sorts of places. The Catholic faith drew many of us. The idea of a forgiving, loving God who forgives all sin and welcomes cripples, lepers, and whores had special meaning for us, and the Church welcomes even the genemodded. I took to it quickly, Allah might claim to be the same God, but he is harsh and cruel and lacks the comforting touch of Jesus, the incarnate god, while Jove is...distant, the master of space, one to be dealt with without affection. Hermione Fairchild, of course, was pleased to have so many powerful allies whose lives she had such complete control over, and used her connections to get us into the UJCIDF. At least one was present at the first negotiations with Avalon and...consequently defected to them.” She shakes her head slowly, bitterly, “As if you can run from the Fairchilds of this world. Others joined the Church. Some simply vanished.”

“What happened to Gerard Biggs?” You question.

Her eyes flash, something ugly in her expression, but it quickly smoothes over. She shakes her head violently, “Don't make me think about it, please. We...we hurt him. We hurt him the way he'd hurt us. We planned to cut him to pieces, but then we didn't. We realized that if we did, we would really be his daughters. There was nowhere he could run to, he had failed completely and if he went back, there was a good chance he would simply be killed for the secrets he knew. So we released him.” She takes a deep, shuddery breath, “Every day I thank the Lord for Keith. I was in a dark, vile place inside for so long, a sinner who hated herself and hated the galaxy, a poisonous creature living only for the sake of survival, and then...I...I met him. Hermione Fairchild had arranged a marriage for me, planning to use her 'niece' to increase her connections among the Jovian upper class and he had a girlfriend. We spoke a few times, and I found out that he...he had been something abandoned, too. Floyd Beck had a cousin, who discovered Keith's existence and, rather than letting him be thrown away, unfroze him with the intention of raising him. Unfortunately, when he was still a baby, she was killed in an accident, and he was raised in a church orphanage and by various foster families, never truly having a home. I don't know who realized we loved each other first, but...I confess, we were both struck by a divine thunderbolt. I broke off the engagement, which my...aunt...was livid about, and Keith broke up with Allison. It was for the best, anyway, she was sleazy and would have hurt him, and my relationship was purely at my aunt's behest. Ever since then, it has been Keith and me.” She winks, “Of course, I'm...rather a bit older than I look, so I'm robbing the cradle slightly, but ah, that's alright, isn't it?”

“How old are you?” You ask reflexively.

“Rude!” She throws a small plush ferret at you, bouncing it off your nose and onto the foot of the bed, “Will you promise not to tell Rosita? I suspect she knows something is going on, but I'd rather tell her in my own way, at my own time. I swear I won't let her be angry at you for keeping secrets.”

“So long as it gets you to stop throwing things at me!” You protest.

She smiles in a saintly manner, “Wonderful. It feels good to finally get this off my chest. Ah, what a blessed day!”

Real talk though, I don't really like how interconnected the setting has become. Everyone is connected to someone or something, which in turn is connected to two more things etc etc. It makes a setting that's supposed to be interplanetary feel more like a small town.

Game resumes W E D N E S D A Y

Or maybe this weekend if I get stuff done early (unlikely), it's going to be a few vignettes of stuff happening elsewhere.

When you walk in rarified circles or circles of specialist, you're gonna run into the same people or folks related to the same people repeatedly. This happens even now.

Also its just plain storytelling and progression, especially how a number of these connections have only been forged as the quest continues. Without the emotional component, there'll be no investment and connection to the characters.
>>
>>1828901
I mean think of it like this, in Hollywood you can connect almost any two actors within five degrees of separation. Hollywood has had likely over 10,000 actors since it really started up. And the upper crust of the solar system involving nobles and ace pilots. It stands to reason they would all be interconnected in some sense.
>>
>>1828901
That's what social circles are anon.
>>
>>1828913
>And the upper crust of the solar system involving nobles and ace pilots is likely less than 10,000 at least the people who are important.
Man I'm getting tired today.
>>
>>1828901
Like >>1828910 says, in a small community you tend to find out that everyone knows everyone else at some extent. For example, this is pretty common in the animation community.
The fact that we were pirates that rose to be a king and basicaly has become one of the best aces in the solar system pretty much assured that everyone important-ish we meet will know somebody else from our clique.
>>
>>1828901
Humanity also had a major fight for survival 30 years ago. Those who survived likely made tons of connections with their war buddies, and it is the sort of thing that draws people together.
>>
>>1828913
You can connect any human being to any other human being within 6 people. Everyone having a direct relationship is silly.

>>1828901
I just don't like Rosita being one of the Neverland babies. Keith being Floyd Beck's son is kinda funny. Especially considering his relationship with Caesar.
>>
>>1828910
>>1828913
True, but as I mentioned, it makes a setting that's supposed to feel big seem rather small.

This is a setting that currently has two sides of an intergalactic war, each of which has multiple planets and factions of their own, and yet everything seems to be connected to the same 20 or so people. It just seems a tad bit too incestuous to me.
>>
>>1828937
>True, but as I mentioned, it makes a setting that's supposed to feel big seem rather small.

One major thing to consider is that most colonies will have much smaller populations than modern Earth.

I mean 2/3 of humanity got killed off in the course of 20 years, I would imagine the peole left would be a lot more connect than you would normally expect.
