1ST ROLL: 3 vs 3 – RESULT: NO ADVANTAGE GAINED

No matter how many times it had happened before, the sensation of a KanMusu jumping head-first into combat made you feel things you’d never dreamed of even comprehending. Emotion rushes through you like the rapids of a river. You weren’t on the front lines, but it certainly felt no different as having your fists up and a whole wall of eager animals waiting to pound on you. It wasn’t adrenaline that pumped through you, not at all. Adrenaline was too sophisticated, too wordy put into this rush, this primal presence boiling within you—within them—seeping through your being like it had never been absent before. Nachi’s war cry and the pale of Musashi’s eyes etch themselves into your mind as they step onto the waves, guns out, the whole world moving too slow for their liking. Too lazy and content for yours.

KanMusu were made for war.

It wasn’t hard to say that the cloth wasn’t of a different color.

‘Secure the perimeter and get them off the RAY!’

They don’t reply—not with words at least.

Nachi’s dashes towards one of the encroaching I-Class, as big as a family car with teeth that you could never forget. Musashi ducks right out from her position under the ship. Through their eyes, you see the enemy. There weren’t many of them, no bigger than the average patrol encounter. Hopefully, this would be quick.

The I-Class meets Nachi’s blow ... only, it doesn’t. The large creature rolls itself at angle that Nachi practically slides along the creature, prompting her to spin herself to rid herself of the leftover inertia. Through Musashi’s eyes, you see an I-Class moving from another dead angle, following up on its ally’s feint to chew down on Nachi’s head. Your mouth opens to yell out a command, a tight, constricting sensation grasping at your belly as you see the Destroyer charge down your Heavy Cruiser, only for Nachi to spin and slide up the creature’s head, a little more wet than she was before, but otherwise unscathed. Through her eyes, you see her angling for a shot to the I-Class’s back, only for the creature to smack at her with its large body, before diving underwater and out of effective engagement—and it doesn't take long to realize why.

‘Nachi, watch your ten o’clock!’

‘I see ‘em!’

For a moment, there is a blur, darkness, droplets of water, seemingly floating in slow motion...

You realize why they’re the ones fighting on the frontlines—why this was your role.

A parry meets with flop, the force of the contact pushing Nachi away from her assailant ... and into the waiting reticles of Musashi’s range.

‘MUSASHI!’

2ND ROLL: 1 vs 1 – RESULT: NO ADVANTAGE GAINED

You want to shout the order to fire. There wasn’t time to waste with these small fry, not with the bigger threats so close ... but a green blare catches your attention. It must have only been ten seconds since they’d left the ship. Ten seconds since you’d been chewed out for your lack of preparation and your subsequent moves to make amends for it ... and less than a breath’s notice since your guts had kicked right in and re-shuffled your priorities.

There’s one on your five!

At your warning, Musashi spins around, fast enough to see the Tsu-Class training its shield-guns on her—and enough time to give the first salvo of the night no victim. Through Musashi’s eyes, you see water and metal exploding all around, but ultimately missing their intended mark. She goes on the move again—you can practically hear her thoughts, her intentions: to draw them as far away as possible from your position, from the the RAY. The contact made had thrown whatever plans you once had on the window—right now, you needed to re-position yourself. They needed to bring the fight somewhere you wouldn’t be involved, where you wouldn’t be inadvertently drawn in.

‘Nachi, follow Musashi! Don’t let them corrale you!’

A chomping pair of teeth bite inches away from your view, almost making you stumble.

‘What do you think I’m trying to do here?

You let out a cry of frustration as Musashi’s battle plays in the corner of Nachi’s eyes, your Battleship dancing with the Tsu-Class as she was with her assailants. There were two fronts now: the disadvantage of numbers and your inclinaton for quality had turned against you. In any other position, you could have called in a back-up, but in sortieing Musashi, you had practically put all your eggs in one basket ... hers.

‘Directly engaging, Commander!’

Musashi rushes in, her guns decked and ready to pepper her foe, The reticles and systems make themselves known to you, Musashi’s indicators lining up for a shot. In all the chaos, she had managed to find an advantage—a point to press on. The Tsu-Class continues to release ineffective volleys. Musashi may have been slower, but intent was everything in combat. Adjusting her speed and her tendency, you find time slowing down again—at the same moment Nachi breaks right out of the double-team, lifting you up out of the quagmire you had inadvertently found yourself in.

A shrieking whirr and a click sounds in what seems like an eternity, the first shots of the night from your side, ready to—

The warning flashes and you move to bark your orders ... too late.

Watch your nine!

3RD ROLL: 6 vs 2 – RESULT: PRESSURED!

The third I-Class is too fast. In the scheme of things, it had remained quiet, steady ... and ready to pounce. The first firing of Musashi’s cannons under your command are wet with an unceremonious and blatant miss as the creature bites onto the barrel, sending your Battleship tumbling onto the waves. She gtowls, her anger echoing in your thoughts as you feel a seemingly irresistible pull drag you, barely held by your own thoughts, your own resistance ... trying to reel it in. You can feel it: humiliation and anger rolling into one ball, seemingly biting into your skull as she whirls on her assailant, moving to send the Destroyer flying, but only managing to find air as it dives under the waves, drawing—

Your blood runs cold.

‘Musashi, don’t—’

For a moment, you believe you had gone deaf. White, black and light seem to blend into one as you find the feed through Musashi’s eyes thoroughly obscured by the Tsu-Class’s volley. You find yourself disoriented, stunned, by the assault. You don’t know whether to yell at Musashi for how easily she had been distracted by a negligible annoyance or to kick yourself for not being able to come up with a proper contingency to the encounter. Musashi moves again, covering herself from the follow-up salvo, her frustration more than apparent. It was like an orb of fire burning in the middle of your mind.

‘Commander, they’re breaking off on me!’

Through Nachi’s visuals, you see the I-Classes taking flanking positions, away from Nachi and—

Oh no.

4TH ROLL: 6 vs 2 – RESULT: Musashi: DAMAGED!
CLASS DISPARITY: Significant Damage Avoided!

The volley makes contact this time.

MUSASHI!

You’d been out-maneuvered. The scouting party had played you on their goal, their priorities. That’s why they had the I-Class stand back while the rest of them—including the Tsu-Class—had directly engaged, despite the discrepancy of force strength. The remaining I-Classes move right in, continuing the assault, only for your Battleship to—by some miracle—emerge from the center of the kill box a battered, but with little indication of a decrease in combat efficiency. Through the feeds, you see the Tsu-Class move, eager to bring its prey back into its slaughter house. The I-Class move into their own formation, Nachi little more than a memory as they formed a wing, pulling themselves along Musashi.

There wasn’t a bone in you that didn’t have an iota of worry as you watched the scene unfold, unwilling to believe that Musashi would be down and out so fast.
>>
However, you also knew that she wouldn’t be able to take another one of those this early if you expected either of them to last. Not at this point.

‘These suckers are fast, sir, what’s the plan?’

‘Regroup.’

As if answering your prayers, a salvo blasts right across your field of view ... and your Heavy Cruiser, Nachi, zooming back into the fray, her gunrs hot.

5TH ROLL: 6 vs 6 – RESULT: NO ADVANTAGE

‘Anything else you have in mind? I don’t plan on going down on a touch encounter, Commander!’

‘Spread but don’t separate,’ you order firmly, taking the direct visuals into account, ‘last thing we need is them shoving either one of you into a kill—’

A volley interrupts the rest. You don’t have anything to say that they don’t already know for themselves, in any case. Musashi and Nachi weave at break-neck speeds, meeting enemy fire with light shots of their own, the Tsu-Class working as the main offensive force as the I-Class Destroyers played escort. The I-Class Elite, however, had other plans.

Disrupting yours.

With a sense of purpose that belied its stature, the I-Class criss-crossed with Musashi’s and Nachi’s paths, allowing for the Tsu-Class and its compatriots to let loose on your duo. The only thing keeping them intact was their experience and instinct. You don’t dare utter a word as the shells and waves rocked the battlefield, afraid that even a whisper would throw either of them for a loop. Nachi dances around the explosions with grace you would have normally atttributed to Shigure, her offensive capabilities significantly hindered by Musashi’s own presence. While not lacking in firepower, Musashi’s slightly battered state had left her somewhat sluggish ... and whatever output Nachi could have had otherwise was spent at keeping further pressure off.

The exhange goes for all of two minutes, with Nachi training and Musashi training their guns, only to—at best—only be afforded a glancing blow, littel more than disorienting strikes against the advancing party. The Destroyers prove more than worthy of the mantle of humanity’s scourge—the stuff of your nightmares—in persistence and precision, despite being able to do little more than afford slowing or misdirecting strikes against your forces, keeping Musashi and Nachi from gaining any sense of balance or thought. They were fast enough to keep it coming and smart enough to know that either one of them could be tearing them in two any other day.

They were getting smarter. They were learning.

‘COMMANDER!’

You’re shaken from your thoughts by a frustrated cry from Musashi, barely dodging another bite from a Destroyer.

‘WE CAN’T KEEP AT THIS FOR LONG, YOU WAITING FOR FREEBIES OR WHAT?!'

The fire burns.

1ST ROLL: 7(+2) vs 2 –RESULT: OFFENSIVE MANOEUVRES SUCCESSFUL! CRITICAL!

Now was a good time as any.

You hadn’t brought her here to play it safe, anyway.

‘Show them what you’ve got, Musashi!’

At those words, you feel something in you … twinge. Not snap, nor break—twinge. A hotness boils within you, not burning you up, but lighting an inferno that you weren’t sure you were capable of controlling, let alone keeping in line … but at the same time, you feel as though you don’t have to—that you’d held it back enough and that now was the time to step back and let the flames dance. Visions of green and blue come to you in flashes, spurts. Your body feels like it’s raging against the very air itself, roaring and crying out for release. Nachi’s eyes appear before you, yelling words indistinct, but otherwise understandable.

So you let it burn.

Oh, I’ve been waiting for this!

Red and blue mesh into one as Musashi howls upon the open sea, cocking her shoulders back and cracking her knuckles. The leash had been unclipped, the collar unbuckled: she was [i[free.

You feel your muscles tense and your limbs contort in time with Musashi, who crouches forward, her body engulfed with what you can only rationalize as the inferno from before, the heat and rage that you had felt yourself bathed in. Something else shoots up too, something more primal than need and want, carved deeper into your bones than hunger: purpose. You feel like you re made for war. That you belonged out there just as much as she did. Your thought barely finishes when the sensation of air gliding across your skin shocks you back into reality—and you find yourself looking through Musashi’s eyes at her first victim of the night.

The I-Class is fast, faster than her—but in its movements were predictable, it’s objective clear as day: it wasn’t here with the hope to take down Musashi in some miracle of its own making, it wasn’t built—born--for that purpose. All it was doing was putting a body between your attacking force and the heavy-hitter of this small party … and that made it ripe for picking. One salvo misses, one glances and Musashi, over her cannons and her own counter by cannon fire, instead opting to use her hands. The creature bites down on her foe as the Tsu-Class and the remaining escort scatter, leaving Nachi to corral the disruptive Destroyer into a more manageable duel, their plans distorted.

Musashi is quick—and messy.

You can feel her grabbing the roof of its mouth with her bare hands, grabbing onto something fleshy, something hard or metallic; even here in her mind, spiritually side-by-side with her, you can’t tell … but you know what she intends to do.

Gore and chunks rip splash all over as the edged top of its head is ripped clean off in a shower of gore, giving you your first kill of the night.

Musashi howls again.

2ND ROLL: 2(+2) vs 6 – RESULT: ENEMY RECOVERS

The enemy doesn’t relent, even in the face of a monster. Musashi rounds on the Tsu-Class, only to find herself assaulted by volley after volley. Nachi, ever at the ready, moves in to return fire, but whatever you had hoped to achieve beyond bringing the enemies numbers down with that assault had left you merely grateful that you’d managed to eliminate one. Your Squadron moves again, separated by cannon fire. Nachi lets loose shot after shot, her secondary armaments doing wonders you could have barely expected, keeping both of them still in the fight. She tumbles to the ground as the whistle and taste of a fired round assaults your senses, only able to find that the Elite had returned, breaking up whatever pressure that Nachi had managed to build up. You find yourself cursing as a swing misses the slippery creature, large as a car and able to chew down doors, but slick as an eel. Cannon fire exchanges again between the two sides, the odds of numbers that were once whittled down in the hope of favour more than made up for by their own considerable tactical prowess. For lightweights, they could move, and move they did. Nachi, despite being hardly more than a scale in purpose, was doing her best, mirroring the I-Class Elite’s movements, countering disruption with her own brand of support, showering your enemies with opportunistic shots that didn’t hit, but definitely kept them from pushing for any more ground than you had already afforded them.

3RD ROLL: 3(+2) vs 7 – RESULT: EXPOSED

Something happens.

You’re not quite sure what did, but something does happen … and it leaves you blind. The instruments whirr and click in error as you find yourself being assaulted by bright light and a bevy of shrieking sounds and sensations. You were still with them, you were still in the fight … but they had deployed some weapon that had left you little more than a man stumbling through the darkness. Explosions and yells come to you as you find yourself more and more disoriented, practically stumbling as you move through the Interface to restore your vision.

‘Sensors and link disrupted on my end. Status?’

‘They’re moving too fast, I can’t get a proper read on ‘em! They’re disrupting out feed!’

‘Can you guys hold?’

‘What do you think we’ve been doing?!

You move through the windows and the prompts, every yell and cry rushing you to move faster, letting out curses and hisses at the Interface, praying for the feed and sensors to return.

The blue glow of Nachi’s feed was never more welcoming, greyed but otherwise slowly becoming visible. Despite the situation, you let out a whoop of relief, finally seeing the sea in your vision once more.

‘Hang on, I’m patching the sys—’

Then you find yourself staring at the raised shield of the Tsu-Class, intent to bring it down on …

‘NACHI!’

11 KB JPG
4TH ROLL: 5(+2) vs 1 – RESULT: RECOVERY SUCCESSFUL! CRITICAL!

It didn’t get the chance.

Not without that shield.

The shield that its arm had been attached to, torn apart by one well-placed shot from your madly-grinning Battleship, back in the fray as your systems fired up once more.

The yellow light glows—this time, however, you’re more than prepared for that annoying sucker.

‘Musashi, watch your four!’

‘On it!’

The I-Class Elite gives pursuit, this time blitzing alongside Musashi, taking dirty pot shots anywhere it can. With their main advantage turned into a liability, there was only one thing it could do right now: match whatever it was left to catch up with whatever it had. A part of you wants to commend the creature, able to disrupt and niggle at you to this extent. Cannon fire after cannon fire glances above and behind Musashi, her own targetting systems being made known to you. It was built for speed and fodder, but a part of you had a grudging sort of respect at this small force being able to push you this far, taking what it could without so much as a glance. Even moving at breakneck speeds, a sense of precision—of patience—makes itself known to you, more than anything else. A sort of silent turmoil churns inside of you as you feel Musashi’s cannons click and train upon the glowing eyes of the Abyssal … and how less than a second later, it was in a thousand bits, chunks of metal and flesh splashing onto the waves.

Musashi whirls on her toes as she dodges to the right in a sudden motion, a volley barely glancing her rigging as she comes face-to-face with the armless Tsu-Class, firing slug after slug, miss after miss in one last attempt to eliminate your Battleship.

5TH ROLL: 7(+2) vs 1 – RESULT: ENEMY PRESSURED! CRITICAL!

It doesn’t come close.

‘Oi, you didn’t forget about me, did you?’

A gloved hand on its helmet and a barrel down its throat gives a brief prelude to what comes next.

Nachi;’s grip cracks into the structure of its helm, its glowing eyes—dead eyes—widening with something as she shoves it to the surface of the sea.

Liquid and metal explode in a horrid mess as Nachi pulls the trigger, tearing the head—and most of the torso—of the Tsu-Class into mere chunks, covering your vision with black slime. She gets to her feet, stoically, Musashi coming up beside her and offering her a small grimace. Somehow, you and your Squadron had pulled right out of that predicament.

A faded splashing sound makes itself known to you as your feed reveals the remaining I-Class zooming off, the odds no longer in its favour. Musashi trains her guns once more, eager to finish up.

‘Let it go,’ ‘This is just the first strike—’

Yes.

There it was.

You’d been wondering when it would kick in—the price of bringing a Goddess of the Battlefield such as her, and here it was. You can hear voices, egging you on, pushing you, pulling at you. Your brain feels like it’s in a dead-lift, threatening to burst through your skull. Drool gathers at the corner of your mouth as you feel your eye—your magical one—begin to spin as you feel yourself being burned and devoured on the same stroke, holding back a torrent of what you can only describe as desire and a rage against the shackles that were your soul. You see Musashi’s face, roaring and howling against a dark sky, eager for her next meal. You let out a breath, the vision of the flight deck coming back. A great thirst surges through you, both unfamiliar and unwelcome, all the while you try to claw at the remainder of your sanity against this great onslaught of raw unfiltered passion threatening to engulf you. Musashi’s words come to you, vague as they were.

It was like a motion—you had to move with it, not against it. It wasn’t a battle, it was a dance. Your rhythm had to not just match hers, but moderate it. Musash’s passion, her emotion, drove her as well in battle as much as it did you. Steadying yourself the best you can, feel it flow through you. It was a little harder done than said, but you felt that you knew what to do.

You calm yourself down, feeling the motions…

And hope that your choice was the right one.

You decide to give her some slack.

SUCCESS! MODIFIER – 2

The pull rushes away from you, not quite cooling down, but definitely tugging on you less. Musashi’ emotions are still a whirl, a torrent, however, and that meant that even with the space you had given her, it meant that you yourself had to ensure that you didn’t get lost in it. The Interface and the flight deck come into view in sporadic instances, maybe for a flash, maybe for an eternity, but you could feel your mind, your soul grow used to it. For better or for worse, you feel as though you are one being sharing the same space, the same presence … but different sides. A stray memory of Musashi’s summary comes to you, and you feel as though—at least in this instance—within the right.

This was the easy part, however.

There was still something fighting against you—against your understanding, your control, threatening to break and shatter you like glass. You can hear it, feel it: battle, battle, battle, it cries out, less than a whisper, but enough that it feels like daggers through your eyes and ears. You find yourself swimming against a current that refuses to slow, hastening with every stroke of your arms and kick of your legs, threatening to engulf you as it did before. The steady bass of a beating drum pounds with every second, every eternity that goes by … and you finally understand just why you were a Commander, why Musashi and Yamato were on different echelons of power, of value.

You’re not being eaten alive. You know this.

It damn well didn’t feel like it, though.

You want to puke your brains out. That’s how it feels. You feel a part of you break of and cast itse3lf into a void, as though your nerve endings were being pulled and set aflame by a blowtorch. Your ears feel like they’re being filled with cement, your eyes watering as you find yourself grasping against the raised pylons, the eyes of a concerned fairy fixed upon you as you gain a sense of consciousness, of self. Static sounds everywhere, your form hardly able to find its bearings or any sort of balance. Your good eye glances around, a mix of the feed of Musashi’s, Nachi’s and your own eyes blending messily before you’re able to actually—somewhat, at least—steady yourself, grunting as your head hangs. The static slowly clears as the blue glow of the Interface makes itself known to you and—for the time, anyway—you find a hold on sanity, finding yourself resting against a familiar invisible cushion.

You want to throw up, but you don’t trust your throat with its aim.

‘Commander, are you all right?’

Musashi’s voice is laced with concern, but it still sounds like nails against chalkboard right now.

‘Got a little bit of a kick,’ you reply, wiping the sweat from your cheek as you bring up the sensors. ‘Nothing too major.’

‘Like Hell it isn’t,’ Musashi growls right back. There’s even a little bit of Nagato in there, you find.

You really wish she would stop talking right now.

‘I’m in operating condition,’ you follow up sternly, unwilling to waste anymore time than you already had. ‘How’s the parameter?’

‘We’re currently eight, maybe ten nautical miles from you, tops.’ Nachi cuts in, raising her eyes to the dark horizon. ‘No enemies within contact vicinity, but nothing telling on what’s out here, Commander.’

‘No follow-up force running another attack?’

‘If there are, we’re not as big a blip for them to bother,’ she answers sharply. ‘Considering how hard a time that first bunch gave us, I don’t think they see us as a proper threat to the area. They probably have us pegged as a prod more than an encroaching force.’

‘It’d be up to us to change that,’ you answer crisply, changing the setting on several of the sensors. Nachi was right: outside of that singular force, there wasn’t any approaching mop-up—and that either meant that they didn’t see you at the lead of an offensive, a patrol with no intent of expansion or … that they were approaching anyway, and you didn’t have a proper read.

After what had happened last time, discounting the possibility would be idiotic.

‘No immediate presence in your area confirmed. sensors indicate a bunch of activity some distance out. We’re not swarmed, but I think they got a wider berth than Intel thought.’

Surprise, surprise,’ Musashi sarcastically sounds.

'Some activity North-East and about West. Can't get a proper lock, though.'

Nachi nods.

‘On you, sir.’

You move your eyepatch … and almost bite your cheek as you find your many viewpoints mingle and meld into one. Steadying yourself, you remember Akashi’s words on any instability in the deployment of this particularly curious aspect of your person, but after what had happened last time, you’d rather take the headache than put yourself in the unwelcome position of an ambush. The adjustment this time is brief, however, and despite the indicators turning a different colour—due to the presence of an alien magic source, probably—and the brief set of warning prompts, none—or at least, only a minute part—of the established and installed systems went on the fritz.

A sigh of relief escapes you as the only thing visible to you is the grey of non-presence. You were in the clear—they weren’t playing dirty this time, and that was a welcome sight. For assurance, you look around … and almost stumble as you see the ethereal glow of pinkish orbs floating around—the fairies—and bouncing in mid-air, the jingle of their flight making itself known to your ears. One of the pink orbs glows brighter as it approaches you … and you realize that they aren’t orbs at all, but tiny sparkles—stars—that were made from the mere presence of the accompanying fairies.

You raise your prosthetic, the light landing onto your finger and rolling upon it, before lifting off once more.

‘Commander, your orders?’

Musashi’s concerned voice breaks the silence, prompting you to slide your eyepatch back in place before bringing up one of the many windows. Indicators still stated that there was a plethora of activity in the North-East and West of your position. You had to make a decision.

Bringing up the battle record—fuzzy information at best, but out here everything was fuzzy anyway—you try to call up the bearings as well as you could. It’s messy—spotty—but a niggling feeling nags at you to actually cover your bases. You’d let the I-Class Destroyer, the only survivor to your repelling actions, go with Mithra’s mercy out of sheer pragmatism, but after the tough introduction to the mission’s parameters, you couldn’t discount that it wouldn’t be back with bigger, harder guns in tow. You bring up the grid, lightly swearing as you find that the indicators did little more than pick up sporadic signatures and no real vector to what you intended to find out.

‘Which way was the I-Class headed?’

Nachi’s visual takes on a light shade as the night vision fully kicks in. You see Musashi tap her foot impatiently against the surface of the water, her cannons groaning and creaking against the cold air.

‘Beats us,’ Nachi replies nonchalantly, massaging her slightly-worn wrists. ‘Never paid attention to the bearings.’

‘I’d say South-West, but I can’t make heads or tails of our position right now,’ Musashi cuts in with her own response, shrugging through Nachi’s feed. ‘Couldn’t get a proper lock?’

You sigh, pinching the bridge of your nose.

‘It kind of dropped on the list of priorities.’

Musashi shakes her head in disapproval.

‘Considering you told us to drop pursuit, it’s kind of odd you’d ask that now, really. You could stand to be a little less wishy-washy.’

‘Just covering my bases,’ you answer as evenly as possible—but to tell the truth, right now you felt like letting it go like that may not have been the best idea. You could only hope it didn’t end up biting you in your raw behind.

‘Sensors aren’t giving me anything concrete,’ you reply, feeling a little frustrated as you bring up the pre-rendered grid. ‘Give me thirty seconds to triangulate the next designation, trooper.’

‘Acknowledged, sir,’ Nachi returns—you see her throw Musashi a nod. ‘We’ll run some scouting of our own in the meantime.’

‘It won’t take more than two minutes,’ you try your best to reassure them. There’s no audible response from either one.

Waving your fingers and bringing the sensor window to the for, you scan the lines to check for any abnormalities. You mumble words of frustration as you find that neither of the previously-computed pieces of information gave you anything significant to go by. Letting out a deep breath, you consider what you know. The area was big enough for more than just a party in the mold of that small group to be the only bunch poking in around; on that front you could trust the Intel from your briefing to be solid. What puzzled you, however, was that there didn’t seem to be anything that pointed to a force large enough to fortify this particular area of the sea to the extent that patrols couldn’t push through. There seemed to be a lot more open space than you had previously thought … but that led to the mystery of the two significant signatures on the grid.

One of them probably had the Re-Class among them.

That was the one you’d hoped to take care of first.

Flicking on a window and bringing up Musashi’s visuals, you come to a decision.

It wasn’t as if you’d never shot from the hip before.

‘Head west,’ you command, sending your own visuals through the Stream link. ‘Grid designation JD-0826, caution advised as enemy forces are of an unknown quantity. Musashi, you’re point; Nachi, you’re playing double duty. Intercept anything that comes your way and cover her rear.’

‘Roger that,’ Musashi replies, taking point. ‘Designation of reference JD-0826 received. Rollin’ out!’

You bring up the sensors—again, no activity. Whatever it was out there, even with its knowledge of your presence, was doing little to nothing to deter your advance.

‘No interceptors so far, so if there’s anything out there, you’ll be getting the drop on them.’

‘Acknowledged,’ Nachi returns, nodding as she tailed right behind Musashi at cruising speeds. ‘Running close formation.’

‘How’re you holding up, sir?’

Musashi’s sudden inquiry catches you by surprise.

‘You sure this is the time to be worrying about me, Musashi?’ you reply—maybe a little more harsh than you had intended, but you could ill-afford to allow her to be idle right now.

‘I could feel the snap from here,’ she persists, throwing a glance back Nachi. ‘I’m surprised you’re not bawling your eyes out.’

‘I’ve had worse.’

Not quite to your surprise, you hear chuckles from both of your Squadron underlings, along with a glance from your point-man to your rear guard, who adds in a bemused shake of her head, concurring with your own reply.

Of course you have.’

It may have been minute, but you’re thankful that your injection of humour to ease the tense atmosphere worked … for whatever it was worth. The air of uncertainty still hung on all three of you—the worries of the mission, the looming objectives—but for a moment, at least, a ring of small but genuine laughter rose up; one that you were more than welcome to hear. Feeling the last weight of Musashi’s restraints lifting from you mind, you bring up the sensors again, feeling at ease with your position once more.

‘I have a vague reading a couple of units up around the South-East, Commander.’

So much for lifting the lid on the heavy atmosphere.

‘On it.’

You bring up a few windows. The grid wasn’t that reliable for now, but it was something you had to make do with—and you didn’t want to dwell on the possibility that the damage was from your odd encounter with the first contact force … lest you have Yuubari’s wrath to deal with again. Scanning the edges of the sensors, you notice little to no change on the readings. Save for a few shadows—which was more likely just some stray wildlife—there was little reason for immediate paranoia. You swipe the sensor windows away, enlarging several other indicators just to be sure. At the lack of immediate activity within the vicinity of the scopes, you find yourself releasing a breath you hadn’t known you had been holding.

‘Readings indicate no abnormalities,’ you announce, to which the both of them share a nod.

Musashi hastens her pace, prompting Nachi to do the same.

You move to bring up the status displays on the duo, keen on—

ALERT: ABNORMALITY DETECTED
SIGNATURE: -UNQUANTIFIED-

The green dot pulses as the window shoves the others out of the way.

You curse under your breath.

‘Run silent, you two, we may have incoming.’

May?

‘Attempt quantification of signature.’

You don’t answer her. Bringing up the indicators, you see that the bearings on the two larger collective signatures on the grid had changed. Not by much, but the sensors and display showed that rather than sticking around and waiting for your Squadron to get the jump, they were on the move. Thankfully, however, they didn’t seem to be on course to meet Musashi or Nachi head-on, so whatever it was, for now, you could at least say you had the—

SIGNATURE: -UNKNOWN-

It was moving.

Not running quite on an intercept course, but it was definitely moving.

‘I got a signature on the sensors, can’t get a lock on what it is, though.’

The both of them share a look.

‘Change of plans,’ you announce, ‘intercept the abnormality, you two.’

The reaction is immediate. The both of them stop in their tracks, Nachi almost crashing into one of Musashi’s large cannons as she whirled back the way she came. Musashi skims over to her comrade, looking stoic as ever. Even with night vision, the impatient scowl carved upon her was more than apparent, as was Nachi’s own expression of disbelief. She briefly stares up at the clouds in the sky, mumbling something as Nachi rounds on your revision of the plans.

‘What the—what are you on about?’

‘There’s an abnormality on the grid,’ you reveal—it doesn’t change much of their disagreement to your shift in plans, however, if Musashi’s placing of her hands on her hips and Nachi mouthing her disagreement were any indication of their reception. ‘I can’t get a proper read on it, but it looks like it’s running an intercept course by its speed … either that, or it’s another patrol.’

Musashi sighs, shaking her head in a manner that reminded you more of Nagato than her usual boisterous self.

‘You want us to run off an intercept course of our own? That’s a little eggs in one basket, ain’t it?’

You open your mouth, before closing it again.

There were some choice words to address the issue of insubordination at the back of your throat, but now was hardly the time to let them fly. You bring up the grid, double-checking for any other enemy signatures or changes in the sensor data—there was some movement, but not in the mould of an immediate threat. Briefly going over the prompts, you return yourself to the viewpoints of your two KanMusu, waiting for your deliberation.

‘Cut the chatter,’ you declare in an authoritative tone and sending the new coordinates through the link, ‘break off from attack route and run an intercept on the abnormality. Designation CR-1266 on a south bearing; speed just a few knots above standard cruising.’

You’re thankful that they don’t argue any further.

‘Roger that, running an intercept course to CR-1266. Estimated time to convergence: 5 minutes.’

‘Acknowledged, Musashi.’

They zoom off at breakneck speeds, leaving you to bring up the grid to run another check. You bring up the systems and the windows, scanning for any other way you could cut into what you already knew. There wasn’t much to tell from what you had, but the sensors did indicate some odd frequency that narrowed the presence down to one of the medium-to-heavy hitters. You try your luck again … and again, the systems come back to you with the same result.

At least … until you’re hit with an epiphany.

‘Nachi, am I able to piggyback the RAY’s systems through our Stream to give an extra push?’

‘There shouldn’t be a problem. Watch your head.’

That’s all you need.

The identification matrix blares.

The warnings blare. Even after having become used to five pairs of eyes at the same time, the sensors shouting the warning of the hostile presence irritates more than it snaps you into a sense of alertness. You don’t waste any time, bringing up the intercept vector on the course as you moved to double-check the accuracy of the statement. Gritting your teeth, you pray that the data was accurate, lest you find yourself on a wild goose chase or tumbling into another bout of trouble from your carelessness. The data, once again, comes up as before.

It looked like your secondary objective was indeed on the move.

‘I got a lock on the abnormality: it’s the Re-Class Battleship.’

For the second time that night, Nachi almost tumbles into the water.

You’re serious?

Nachi’s balking face was almost comedic. It was really just too bad that it was wasted on the gravity of such an unexpected development. You hadn’t planned for it to show up this early. Intel had given you a heads-up on her presence, but you hardly thought that it would have amounted to it skimming away from a primary force and going on whatever course it had charted in its head. There didn’t appear to be any other significant, separate, signatures … but the Re-Class’s presence was so big in itself that it could have easily masked any units within its immediate radius.

‘Sheesh,’ Musashi grimaces, turning to Nachi, ‘fate’s got a weird way with rolling the numbers, huh?’

‘Let’s keep the panic to a minimum,’ you announce—your girls weren’t quaking in their boots, but just as you were surprised by this development, they too weren’t prepared for it to be this … simple. ‘We got the drop on it, so no use playing it upfront.’

‘Any supporting units?’

Despite having checked before, you move to bring up the grid. Once again, the only signature that was present was that of the Re-Class … and the

‘Nothing on the scopes, but it’d be stupid to think that there aren’t any; Command Units hardly travel alone, after all.’

You check the grid once more. It would be less than a minute until they made contact—until all Hell would break loose.

‘Orders?’

‘We’re sticking with what we know,’ you declare coolly, ‘We’ve go the drop; Musashi, you take on the Re-Class. Nachi, on contact I want you to parade a shooting solution with your torpedoes on any supporting units. Keep them off Musashi, but don’t forget our primary objective.’

‘Heavy artillery right off the bat? You’re betting it all on the—’

The Interface blinks as the dark horizon is locked onto by a diamond … and you see the tail end of a speeding shadow, little larger than a blink. Whatever other plans you had were moot. This was it.

‘Musashi, Nachi, commence!’

You find yourself in familiar waters … passion threatening to overtake you once more.

DESIGNATION: LIGHT CARRIER NU-CLASS

‘Approach vector at 23 degrees on Nachi and 74 degrees on Musashi,’ you finalize, bringing the blurry visuals. ‘Make it count, you two!

Musashi unleashes the first salvo.

‘CONTACT!’

There were five—five enemy units that you had had the jump on. Musashi’s opening salvo, a long distance out, tears through their formation; a rain of steel hail and shrapnel. The Nu-Classes break off from the group, pressing towards your group with their maws out wide, leaping out of the water as they arrows of light fly into the sky, forming into man-sized crafts to meet with your Squadron’s invitation into battle. Musashi howls as she breaks starboard, Abyssal hail returning her eagerness to combat with its own invitation. The craft aren’t numerous, but they’re swift and manoeuvrable, able to pepper Musashi into changing her approach vector right into the waiting arms of the Light Cruisers.

It was really just too bad that you weren’t the type to relinquish the chance to play dirty.

‘Nachi, get them off the shoulder and drag them to the back of the fore,’ you command, observing the battle—Nachi complies, breaking off from her previous approach vector to comply with your wishes. ‘I want you to drag any support units away from the battle. Pull out whatever’s between you and the objective.’

‘Don’t need to tell me twice.’

Nachi doesn’t hesitate, grabbing one of the torpedoes by her leg and throwing it like a flat rock onto the surface of the water. The projectile charges towards the duo of Light Cruisers, prompting the remainder of the Re-Class’s defending forces to break off. Nachi curses as she shoves her foot down on her throttle, on the move once again as her foes give chase. Musashi charges between the explosions, powering through the shrieks of metal and roars of explosions; she wasn’t built for speed or manoeuvrability: she was robust, direct and most of all … as subtle as an avalanche.

She lets loose another barrage, the shared sensations of sight, sound and smell almost overpowering you as she dives into the formation of screaming buzzards, every cannon, every gun on her roaring back in return. You find yourself engulfed, as if by fire, as if by steel and rage. Musashi tearing through with little to no concern for her own well-being, intent on meeting the challenge, to tear it down … to shove a cannon down the throat of an enemy and pulling the trigger.

So she does.

The Nu-Class cries out an otherworldly scream, half its form little more than chunks in a shower of gore.

2ND ROLL: 7(+2)(+1)+1 (INITIAL ENCOUNTER) vs 6 – RESULT: ENEMY PRESSURED! CRITICAL!

It doesn’t die.

At least, not quietly.

Half its head torn off, a third of its torso gone and its arm little more than a memory with its tongue—or what was left of it—lopping from its exposed jaw and its comrade running off to revise its next course of action, it cries out and calls for help.

The Re-Class responds.

A bolt of cannon fire explodes right in your face, almost making you stumble from the tremors that the link shared. The Nu-Class was no more, little pieces of Abyssal Alloy and pale flesh launching into the sky as Musashi, pulls back. Visuals were unreliable—between the darting of the buzzards peppering and chipping their way at your Battleship. You bring up the grids and the windows, finding the Re-Class Battleship moving in for the kill as the buzzards and the remaining Nu-Class continued their initial assault—but that was of little concern now; even feeling Musashi being scratched and clawed at by the black shadows that darted and spun in the skies, you knew what the danger was; Nachi could handle herself for now—it wasn’t as if your incompetency hadn’t spurred your Squadron to operate at their own discretion in lieu of yours before.

‘Approach vector 84 degrees, watch your right!’

Musashi spins, raising her elbows.

You feel it, even from here.

Musashi’s shoulders barely block the onslaught of the brunt of the Re-Class’s kick; standing here, you could feel that it would have probably broken through a bunker by the force behind it. Something cracks—something of yours or Musashi’s, at the moment, you could barely tell the difference as you feel the immense pressure of the Re-Class’s presence pressing down on your stiff KanMusu, intent on crushing the KanMusu under its foot with the maddening grin it sported.

Your Battleship presses back before diving for the surface … only to have your ears greeted with the groan of something against the stiff metal of Musashi’s turrets. You can feel Musashi’s own grin, the corners of her mouth stretching as she raise her palm to meet the fist of the Re-Class, now towering over her form and staring into her eyes with fiery blue orbs. A small head at the corner of your visual feed and biting into your KanMusu’s turret prompts you to wonder, briefly, if there was another Abyssal, or if the Nu-Class had somehow miraculously put itself together … until you see the pale serpentine tube, and you realize that it wasn’t a separate unit or a unique presence.

It was the Re-Class’s tail.

You’re not given much longer to wonder, however, as Musashi drops a knee to floor and contorts her body forward … and fires a shell right into its face.

3RD ROLL: 1(+2)(+1)+1 (INITIAL ENCOUNTER) vs 3 – RESULT: ENEMY PRESSURED!

The Re-Class staggers … taking one step back, then another, its form rocking back and forth like some puppet on a string.

The warning blares again.

‘Musashi!’

She wastes no time retreating from her downed position, keeping on the move as the whine of attacking buzzards hits your ears again. You wince as you taste gunsmoke and cold air scrape against your skin, your eyes focused on Musashi’s feed, weaving in and out of the barrage from the buzzards. Musashi trains her cannons again, spinning around and taking several hits head on, before letting loose another salvo and downing a flight. She drops to her knees, not quite damaged outside of a few scrapes and bruises … but definitely a little more exhausted than you would have thought.

You feel it, too. The manoeuvres had cost more than just the standard one-two ripples—sortieing Musashi was like lifting a weight that you barely had the class or build for; the amount of resonance was insane. It ate at you at least ten times more than what you had felt with the other KanMusu that you had sortied with. The feedback amounted to more than just the sharing of sensations, and the heightened sensitivity of the sensations made you feel more than just a sideshow to their main event. You’d only felt more familiar with pain when Nagato had been practically disembowelled before. Now, though…

You double over globs of drool spilling onto the floor as you find yourself holding back a desire to retch non-existent vomit.

‘She ain’t the kinda monster that goes down in one shot like that.’

Musashi zig-zags along the battlefield, throwing one pot-shot at the offending Nu-Class and sending the creature diving under the waves for cover again.

You see yellow.

‘Musashi, watch your 5!’

She spins—the shell barely scraping against the Steel of her turrets as the both of you come face-to-face with the Re-Class, its jaw gone and its chest exposed: a burnt, dark mess thanks to Musashi’s point-blank blast.

‘Told ya.’

4TH ROLL: 1(+2)(+1)+1 (INITIAL ENCOUNTER) vs 4 – RESULT: ENEMY PRESSURED!

As the Re-Class fires its barrage, you find yourself being tugged away from the battle … and into another conflict, dodging a flurry of arms and cannon fire, water and darkness converging into one irritatingly obstructive presence. One pale arm shoots out in a grabbing motion, and your view goes dark again … right before a torpedo launches itself like a hand grenade, sending the assailants—the two assailants—apart.

You were with Nachi.

'Musashi's engaging the Re-Class. Break off and support.'

'Busy!'

The Command comes at an instinct.

‘They’re not cutting you off. They’re chasing you, get a—’

As one arm becomes torn off by a swift shot, you don’t finish your words. There was no need.

'En route!'

5TH ROLL: 8(+2)(+1)+1 (INITIAL ENCOUNTER) vs 4 – RESULT: ENEMY PRESSURED! CRITICAL!

You open up the general channel, scanning the battlefield as well as you’re able to.

You’d sent one of the Abyssal units back whence it came—technically, it was by the Re-Class’s hand, but an advantage gained was still an advantage—but that still left four from the unit. A quick look at the direct vicinity, you’re able to see that Nachi was playing a game of tag on her way to meet up with Musashi, who had her work cut out for her; even with half it’s face gone and with a peek into what looked like its ribcage, the Re-Class was as relentless as ever, exchanging salvos, barrages, with her. The Nu-Class, even without half its body and a fully-exposed torso, worked in tandem, its buzzards restricting Musashi as well as she could.

They were also succeeding.

‘Musashi, you’re being corralled into a kill box.’

I know,’ she hisses right back, rolling just beyond the reach of another bout of buzzard fire. ‘They’re hitting me from edge of my blind spots—I can’t turn fast enough to engage in return fire.’

‘Nachi’s coordinates are just West of you. Don’t let them keep pressing you—give yourself some cover fire and pepper it through; head on a South-Western vector. Nachi, run intercept on the Re-Class. Criss-cross in 30 seconds.’

‘You want me to play bait on a pinc—’

An explosion almost sends you off-balance … and cuts whatever argument Musashi had short. She zooms off, heading towards her assigned vector. Nachi dances past the odd shots, firing back to keep her foes on their tail, Musashi doing the same. The grid shows the two blips of your KanMusu dashing towards each other at intense speeds,, alternating between firing back and moving on the coordinates.

It’s not long until Musashi moves past the Ho-Class duo … and Nachi skids right behind the Re-Class, her weapons hot, the two groups practically stumbling into each other as you ready your command, the blips collecting together on one point.

They were in your kill box now.

FIRE!

Deafening sounds of cannon fire reach your ears as you see the bloom of white and red in the darkness; water and limbs fly in every direction, your Squadron letting loose every possible armament they had at their disposal, the bloody of Abyssals marking the face of the sea … and a torn-legged half-torso of a Re-Class stumbling away from the mess as buzzards flew in, giving as much cover fire as possible.

It was the only one left. The two Ho-Classes were nothing more than stains now.

‘Ammo capacity … 60 percent. Damage minimal.’

Musashi’s guns groan again.

‘Enemy retreating, Commander. Pursuit?’

‘Musashi, Nachi, how good a shot are you guys?’

‘Eh?’

It takes a moment for it to register … as the both of them turn to each other, annoyance and amusement slowly carving themselves into their faces. Musashi turns towards the faded view of the horizon, their guns already groaning and whining despite their misgivings. Nachi raises a thumb, as if trying to paint a picture, before raising her elbow and turning back to Musashi and looking directly at you through her feed while you feel her vexation rising through the Stream.

Musashi takes the opportunity to make her own unamused stance with your demand … although you still do hear the whines of the gears, her turrets adjusting themselves in the direction of Nachi’s gesture.

‘You’re demanding ridiculous things … she’s about to break the horizon, you know?’

‘Aiming for where she’ll be, not for where she is … she’s out of my range here,’ Nachi playfully declares, before turning to Musashi , and jabbing her thumb towards the general area of the target again, ’I’ll leave this to you, then, Musashi.’

‘Oi. you’re really asking the biggest things of me, aren’t you?’ You have the distinct feeling that she was referring to your command more than she was at Nachi’s insistence, but you don’t say anything of it. ‘Taking point, breaking shields, it’s enough to make a girl—’

A rumble of cannon fire shakes you as you smell gunsmoke … and find Musashi looking up at a launched shell, burning with what you could only discern as magic, falling through the sky like falling star …

Bullseye.

And crashing into a blue blip on the horizon, a brief blink of white, yellow and red replacing it before being engulfed in darkness again.

Without another word, the both of them make their way to the impact point, skating quietly as they come up to the blue patch of sea, the largest part of the Re-Class that remained nothing more than its bottom half. Reaching under the water, Nachi makes a disgusted sound as she picks up what appeared to be a bloody stump of a leg and pelvis, the headed tail of the dead creature with its tongue lolled out and half the armoured tip blunted, battered, but otherwise intact.

To your surprise, however, it vanishes in a shower of sparkles.

‘How did you do that?’

The both of them shrug.

‘It’s like those RPGs, you know? Where do all the potions go? How are you changing your equipment mid-battle? That sort of thing, you know…’

‘Please don’t break the fourth wall like that—more than that, please don’t aggravate gaming realists,’ you groan, leaning back into the invisible cushion. ‘People have been waiting on back-to-basic JRPGs for years.’

‘I liked Final Fantasy XV.,’ Nachi huffed.
