"How many days are we stuck out here again?"

"Three days; the clipper that dropped us off is making the trip to Airgrid. They're not out personal escort".

Dutch and Archmage continue idly shooting the wind, relaxing next to the fire.

It was nighttime when you made it out of the Ruin, so the three of you decided on heading further inland for shelter.

Stretching out, you take another bite of your Rations. The area was nice enough, sheltered and out of the way. You've got your belongings down next to you, including the bot.

[ARTIFICER QUEST PART 11 START]

>>1907264

Well, you've been putting it off this for long enough. Now that you've got the time to waste, might as well get down to it.

Grabbing your tools out of your bag, you pull the construct to the side so it's a bit out of the way.

The only question is what to start with first?

First things first, you should really see what you did to the construct during your fight.

So, grabbing your tools, you start poking around the general neck area. There's not much you can do without fully taking it a part, but after a few minutes of work you can't help but reflexively wince.

You... did quite the damage to the main infrastructure. The neck must have been where the main control lines and wiring was run through. You can tell because your poking and prodding reveals several complex lines that you just flat out cut through and irreversibly ruined.

The good news is that you don't have to worry about this thing suddenly starting back up. The bad news is pretty much the exact same thing.

What now?

Based solely on the fact that severing the neck managed to disable the entirety of the construct, you begin to work on the 'head'.

It's slow going, as you need to be extremely careful with where you're using your Multitool. But that effort pays off in spades when you managed to carefully remove some of the armor without damaging anything.

After clipping a few wires, you gingerly slide the entirety of the CPU out. Even luckier, you manage to get what you can only guess is is the 'optics' of the construct out without damage.

> You have obtained 1 Unknown Grade Unknown Type CPU!
> You have obtained 1 Unknown Grade Unknown Type Targeting Suite!

With some deliberation, you eventually grab your clean spare shirt and place the two pieces on that.

Judging by how dark it is, you've got time for one more thing before you should really be getting to sleep. You are on first watch this coming morning after all.

Thinking about it, you'll have plenty of time to work on this tomorrow. So, instead you pack up your belongings, giving extra care to the CPU and Targeting Suite you just aquired, and head over to where Dutch is just poking at the fire with a stick.

He gives you a grin as you walk over and sit down next to him, "Hey there, John, finally found some time in your schedule to speak with the meat bags?"

"Yeah," You snort in amusement, "Gotta set aside some time to talk with the pitiful mortals".

The two of you snicker at the usual banter, letting the quiet noises of the night take over for a bit.

"What, got a few places in mind?" You can't help the grin on your face at this point.

"You joking? I just know the Genovese place; I've been in Shirahoro all of two hours," Your friend grabs your shoulder and drags you closer, "How about you? You know anywhere good?"

"That's bullshit and you know it; stupid fuckers picking a fight..."

Thinking about it, you should probably check in with Archmage. He was really only here for one thing in particular, after all.

So, with that in mind, you head over to where the middle-aged man is eating his breakfast.

"John," He states as you walk over and sit down near him, "You need something?"

"Just wondering how things went for you during the Dive; you find what you were looking for?"

There's a moment of hesitation, his eyes looking around for a moment, "... no, I didn't. There were no signs of anything related to Blood Magic in there".

You lean back with a bit of a sigh, "I figured that's how it was, you were right in saying that there wasn't exactly much to find down there".

"Well, I suppose that's not entirely true," Looking back up at Archmage, you note that he's looking over to where he's keeping those computers you found, "While at first thought they might seem useless, these computers just may be a massive find".

"And how's that?" You can't help your curiosity.

"It'll take a lot of work," He says, adjusting his glasses, "We're going to have to call in a few experts in electronics and coding to figure out how to work the programming. But, but..." It's odd, seeing this kind of light in his eyes, "If we're lucky, they might contain a kind of dictionary of the language of their original users. Can you imagine that, John? The chance to resurrect a dead language..."

"You really are a scholar, getting all excited over a dead language," You can't help but roll your eyes a bit as the mage seems to catch and reign in his enthusiasm, "I'm sure the main draw of those computers'll be the hardware, not what's on it".

There's a bit of exasperation is the sigh Archmage lets out, "Yes, that is true. If we could learn how to reverse engineer this technology, it could spring our systems ahead several generations. That is something that the Don would be extremely interesting in working on. We'd need someone experienced in magitech to help us with that, however..."

There's a slightly awkward silence as he gives you a rather meaningful look.

>>
>>1907730

"Once services and pay have been fully rendered due to the completion of this contract, I'd be willing to negotiate a new contract when that job is available," You don't like pulling this 'exact wording' bullshit often, but this was probably one of the few times it was really necessary, "So long as it is with the Genovese Mercantile Group".

"Yes, yes..." Archmage just rubs the bridge of his nose.

Ignoring his irritation, you just lean back a bit and stare up into the morning sky, "Honestly? I'm glad we didn't run into any Blood Magic down there. Considering there must have been close to 80 Goblins, I can't imagine the kind of hell all that blood would have made".

"I actually agree with that, it'll make a full investigation of the Ruin a lot easier to coordinate," He does seem glad at that.

"So, what kind of people used to live in these parts? They must have been something based on what's left of their city"

"Indeed," Archmage looks a bit more relaxed at the change in topic, "We don't know much, but we do know this was some kind of trade capital at one point. We don't know what kind of people they were, and we don't know what caused them to die out".

"I'm guessing they weren't major practitioners of Blood Magic then?"

"No, I believe it is safe to say that the two Ruins were from completely separate civilizations".

"I suppose that's good then yeah?" You look over to him.

"Yes, it is, though it does leave me at yet another dead end..." He looks down, a heavy look of thought on his face, "Well, maybe not entirely..."

That last bit was a whisper, but considering just how quiet it is out you easily hear it.

"Oh..." Archmage looks a bit embarrassed that you heard him, "Uh... Well, I was just thinking that there is one place that we know for certain has that Blood Magic in it".

Now you don't like where this is going... "Go on..."

"Those Ruins in Bo Shan," His words make your blood go cold, "We know for a fact that place has that exact Rune. We know that that place has created the exact phenomena I'm looking into. Logically, that'd be the only place to look into".

You don't say a thing, your voice getting stuck in your throat.

"It'd be better than running around random Ruins hoping for a sheer coincidence," The mage says, motioning with his hand to the coast line.

"... You know that place is completely overrun, right? How the hell are we going to get enough time to examine a Rune when we'd be cut to pieces before getting anywhere near it?!" You can't help the harsh edge that comes into you voice as you finally manage to speak up.

Archmage, to his credit, doesn't look moved at your outburst, "You're right, we'd need to fully clear the Blight out of the area before any real work would be able to be done".

The two of you stare at each other for a moment. He cracks first.

"It's something for the future, John. Not going to happen anytime soon, especially with how there's already so much to be done," He motions to the computers, "Regardless, just think about it. You can always say no. Meanwhile, I'm going to make sure that our findings don't get damaged in the coming trip. So, excuse me..."

The man walks off, you don't try to keep him around.

Right now, you really want to work on something far more simple than the complex web of politics you seem to keep getting dropped into.

So, you walk over to your belongings, and pull out the CPU that you pulled out of a combat construct made gods know how many years ago by a dead civilization.

Ah, simplicity at last...

You have to do quite a lot of finagling and ad hog work to power the processing unit back on and get your gauntlet to properly interface with the device.

And you get... well, pretty much exactly what you expect.

It works, kinda. Probably due to the fact that your gauntlet really acted more like a screen than an interfacing computer. Still, you get something on the screen. The format is completely alien to what you're used to, and you don't understand a word in here aside from the numbers.

Not even bothering to open up the files or run the programs, you close it up and pack it back to where it's secure between your clothing.

Deciding on what to work on first, you remember those hand-blade combi-things that the combat construct was using.

Those were quite interesting, might as well start there.

Grabbing your Multitool and toolkit, you get to work on the arms and hands.

It takes a while. You don't notice as you get lost in the intricacies of the mechanism that swaps out a fully functioning robotic hand with a rather sharp set of blades. Examining them closely, you're very thankful that you managed to avoid taking one of them dead on. Even with the reinforcement, odds are good that your chestpiece couldn't take more than one slash without failing.

The arms themselves are relatively simpler, though with a rather large emphasis on the relative. It's fascinating how they've managed to use a system of pistons, rotors, and joints to replicate the range of motion the average humanoid has.

Several hours after you began, you finally manage to finish up your work on the arms. Most of them are scrap now, but you manage to salvage most of the hands.

Tucking the scrap and intact mechanical bits into your bag, you turn back to the remainder of the construct.

Thinking about things...If you keep working the way you have, you'll likely finish Dismantling the entirety of construct before that clipper shows up. You're not going to be able to work on the CPU and Targeting Suite, since you'd rather have those two on in working order and also you're not the best when it comes to electronics.

Regardless, the question is what to do now?

Back when I started this Quest, I was running it during my breaks from work. Considering that I was working 6 1/2 days a week over the summer, I couldn't exactly set aside a 5-6 hour time block for writing. Besides, most of what this quest has been has been more focused on character choice than narrative, so writing ahead of time wouldn't really yield much.

>>1909865

Working almost around the clock, you spend your time switching out between the Multitool and your entire tool set as you more or less dissect the construct.

Every once and a while, Dutch will kick you to make sure you're eating and drinking, but other than work continues smoothly.

First up are the legs, which are absolutely fascinating to you. Not only did the creators of this construct manage to create legs strong enough to support the weight of the construct itself, but they were also flexible enough to retain stability while in motion. You almost felt bad tearing the things a part, but the knowledge coming to you was more than worth it in your eyes.

Next up was the entirety of the chest. This was far simpler, probably by design than by mistake, but no less impressive. The armor on its exterior here is comparable to Heavy Armor, though likely of a certain alloy lost to the thralls of time. You'll have to come back to the power core and properly investigate it later, so you carefully remove that and add it to where you're storing the CPU and Targeting Suite in your backpack.

> You have obtained: 1 Unknown Grade Unknown Type Power Source!

Last up is the headpiece. Really, the CPU and the Targeting Suite were the major parts here. Still, you take your time going over how it's structured and how the neck operates. It's interesting to see how the creators of this construct implemented stabilizers to help keep the Targeting Suite from getting knocked around in motion.

You actually manage to finish ahead of schedule, and manage to get a rather nice night's sleep in.

Waking up, Archmage informs you that you've got a few hours before the cutter is due to pick the three of you up. Following your usual routine of stretching out, you get ready for the coming day.

You feel pretty good about your work in the last few days. Got a lot of new ideas on the mind now. Unfortunately, you're not able to carry all the scrap metal from the construct and have to leave some of it behind. Oh well. You still take as much as you can to top off your reserves.

> You now have 10 lbs of Scrap Metal!

The morning is now well on its way, and you munch on the remains of a Ration you forgot to finish yesterday during your one break.

Eventually, the three of you load up and head to the meeting spot. Once again, you're relegated to rower. Thankfully, the trip isn't a long one. The cutter shows up when it is supposed to, and you get back on board with minimal fuss.

It's late afternoon when you arrive at the Port of Shirahoro. Stepping off, Dutch leaves to go to wherever it is the Genovese have him housed and Archmage heads off to the main building to report to the Don.

You're now alone in the Water District, just enjoying the moment of quiet.

All things considered, it's not too late to head over to the Main Bastion before it is closed to the public.

Remembering your plan with Dutch, you run after him and tell him to meet up with you at The First Step. Might as well start at a place you both know.

After that brief detour, you head over to the Fire District. It's the same as you remember, all stone brick and mortar. The Main Bastion is still bustling with activity, no one paying you any real mind.

There's a few things you want to do here: talk to Sun about getting a workshop somehow, collect the rest of your reward for the Siege Weapon, and talk to Godo about that apprenticeship. You know that the dwarf in question is probably still busy working on that order. The reward is also easy enough to collect, as you just walk up to the same cleric as before and hand in the contract. He looks at it for a bit, before tucking the paper away and grabbing a pouch of coins.

"I'm John," You state, holding out your hand in your usual manner of greeting.

Jun looks rather confused at it, glancing over to his father who only gives him a slight smile. After a moment of deliberation, he clasps your forearm. Rolling with it, you do the same.

...

You're starting to get a bit annoyed at just how many martial artists you seem to be running into out here. Whatever...

"Well, this was a pleasant surprise," Sun steps forwards as you two end your clasp, "But I believe you need to be heading home Jun. I have business to discuss with John here, and I believe you have work to do. Don't want your teacher to find out that you've been skipping out on your assignments, no?"

Jun goes a rather amusing shade of white at this, "O-of course not!" Shaking himself back to normal, he bows slightly to you, "I must leave for now, but I hope we meet again!"

"I'm sure we will," You respond. Hell, considering how your life goes it's pretty much a guarantee.

Jun Woo runs off, leaving you alone with Sun Woo.

"Your son's... interesting," You drawl out.

Sun just laughs, "He sure is, though I believe you aren't here for him. Come, we can talk more inside".

The two of you walk a ways, eventually coming to what you can assume is his office. It's a rather simple affair, likely owed to the fact that the Head was often out and walking around rather than behind a desk. Regardless, the two of you take your seats across from one another.

"Now," He begins, inclining his head to you, "What is it that you wish to speak to me about?"

"I wanted to continue our conversation from before, about setting up a workshop of my own," No sense beating around the bush here.

"Ah yes," He nods, "Well, there are a few options that you can consider. What exactly are you looking for?"

That really was the main question. Well, might as well see what your options are, "I'm not entirely sure yet, what choice do I have?"

Sun Woo thinks about your question for a bit, "It really depends on what you're willing to buy, and how long you're looking to have it for. For example, if you just need to use a workshop for a few hours at a time, we do offer that here for 50 copper an hour. That would be the cheapest option".

"And if I was looking into something more long term?"

"That would take some looking into; like I said previously, I know a few people I could work with but I do not handle matters outside of the Daimyo and the Bastion directly" He smiles at you here.

That's about what you expected, "Alright, well, how long would that take?"

"A few days, perhaps. However, I can't imagine you would get much use out of a workshop of your own anytime soon".

"And why's that?"

"Well," He just grins at you, "Unless I'm remembering wrong, you're going to be training with Godo. You're going to be smithing from dawn to dusk for easily half a year".

Oh, yeah. No real point paying for a shop you weren't going to use, "And where am I going to be staying for that time?"

He just puts a hand on his chin, pretending to think, "The last person that trained with Godo ended up spending almost all his time in the forge, so we just brought a cot in for him to use. I imagine you'll be doing the same".

"Oh, alright," Thinking about it, that doesn't sound all that bad, "I can manage that".

"Good luck with that John," Sun smiles at you in his usual way, "You can talk to the clerics downstairs about using a workshop. Unless you have something else you'd like to ask?"

Eh, right now you're hungry and there's food waiting for you inside. Can't really argue against that kind of reasoning.

"John!" She looks really surprised to see you apparently appear out of thin air, "Where have you been! I come back and the only thing anyone knows is that you went off to 'iron out a contract' and didn't return!"

Yeah, that really does sound bad now that you think about it, "Haa ha, sorry about that. The job had a non-disclosure clause; could't and can't say much about it aside from it being legal".

"It was a legal job?" Sierra gives you a rather hopeful(?) look, "Seriously?"

You can't help but look around. There's no one really here, most notably Goo Hwi is absent, though Gang Ryong is running around serving food to the few patrons that are here, "Yeah, surprisingly enough it was. Had to camp out in the middle of no where for a few nights, but things we're above the board".

"Sorry, there wasn't a bath in the woods," You can't help but shoot back, staring Sierra down.

She just shakes her head good-naturedly, "Well, you should go get cleaned up before you run into someone that you're trying to impress".

"That's too bad," There's a smirk across your face now, "Because I already have".

"A-ah..." Sierra turns a rather interesting shade of red here, "You should still clean up".

"Aww!" The moment is slightly spoiled by the fact that the elf manages to just barely catch your arms before you can wrap them around her, "You really do care!"

"John..." She looks at a loss of what to say, her eyes darting around to the rest of the room. A few patrons sitting around seem rather amused by your antics, though they don't seem too concerned with the scene you're making.

There's one last twist of the knife to make before you're done, however. So, you lean forwards and whisper right into her ear, "Are you offering to help?"

If she was red before, the elf is practically steaming hot now. It starts with a bubble, but within moments you take a step back to laugh at the situation.

"John..." Sierra looks to be desperately trying to control her emotions, "C'mon, John, it's not funny..."

"Oh... hahha," You motion to a table and start directing her to it, "I gotta get my laughs in somehow. Anyways, enough about me, how's your brother doing?"

Sitting down next to you, she looks relieved that you're changing the subject, "Ryu's doing alright; I've been catching up with him a lot these last few days. I just can't believe it!"

"Believe what?" Her change of tone is a bit surprising, all things considered.

IC, Sierra and her brother are not from the western or eastern side of the continent, but rather are from a large island country that is now entirely overrun by the Blight. Never was mentioned, but they can get pretty high up there if they can prevent unnatural causes of death. I'll say that the max anyone's confirmed an elf living for is ~1,000 years. I'll also say that they reach maturity ~60-80 yrs old, putting Sierra at around 70 yrs old which equates to about 19 yrs old if she was a human equivalent

>>
>>1913188
Better than having noting to cuddle at all. And besides we need to get rid of heat from the system somehow so dispersion of heat through the metal would be reminse of body heat so.... Warm metal
>>
>>1913208
Now we just need to get rid of the part where it's hard metal.
Magic skin?
>>
>>1913212
No it still has to be metal, after all we still need to be combat worthy and seeing as we wont be very nimble armour os our friend here. That's not to say retracting armour wouldn't be good. So incase we die in this shit show should we sort out our will. I'm going with out pistol to Dutch our gauntlet to goo hio and our multi tool to serina
>>
>>1913217
Magic skin over a John/Julius shaped unit then?

Still metal, just has a flesh-like layerâ„¢ overtop so we're not as obviously metal
>>
>>1913219
Maybe just over the face and we styalise the rest to look like armour so we just look like we just never take our armour off. Bit strange but genious es are very exoteric and if we do this we will be genius

Comfy skin coating.

Also it feels like a good in character motivation for John to dig into golem production, to ensure his love is protected past his passing. It could be just a devoted guardian if soul transfer is not possible. And after all, clinical immortality is overrated.
>>
we really don't need immortality just need to slow down our aging and remember that 1000 yrs is the oldest elf she is the equivalent of a 19 yr old at 70 , so she will be the equivalent of 60 at 210 we just need to ruin dive hard and look for some anti aging science or replace the failing parts of our body with machines

"In all seriousness, you see him as your brother, but they don't. If you really want to mess with him, I'm sure there's some really embarrassing childhood stories you could share with them".

She looks thoughtful for a moment, "Yeah... I have some stories I could tell".

You just grin back, "Any baby photos to really embarrass him?"

"Sadly, no, don't have any of those," There's a forlorn look on her face, but then she turns back to you, "You know, I've always been curious though this kinda confirms it for me: do you have siblings John?"

You don't immediately respond. That's... a rather tough question for you. You don't have any immediate siblings, but...

"Kinda..." You let out a sigh. This was going to suck... "I had a half-sister and a half-brother".

"Oh?" Sierra seems rather curious now, "What were their names?"

"Alexander and Cassandra," Your stomach twists in response to speaking their names, "We were... weren't anything like you and your brother".

"Ah..." She looks down at the table, "Your relationship wasn't good then".

"They were cunts," Is your blunt response, "Spent all their time running after Daddy's coat tails and worrying over who was going to be the successor to the family. Nothing but vanity and a lust for power between the two of them... Typical..."

You mutter the last bits under your breath, but with the proximity it's quite clear that Sierra heard every word.

There's an awkward silence, then she speaks up.

"I'll be honest," You reply, waving over Gang Ryong to order some food, "I prefer my life back in Westmire to stay in Westmire; it's for the best".

The two of you order your dinners, passing a quick smile to Ryong as he runs off. Once he's gone, there's a silence for some time.

"But that's neither here nor there," You speak up suddenly, trying to break the downtrodden mood, "What are you getting up to in the next few days?"

Sierra startles a bit, "Uh, I'm going to be going to a few bars my brother said were looking for a new hire, but other than that I don't have much to do. Why, what are you up to?"

"Well..."

"For the long term, I actually got an apprenticeship at the Main Bastion. Apparently I impressed a few of the major players over there, so I'll pretty much be living there for the next several months starting at the end of the week".

"Seriously?" Sierra looks at you in disbelief, "You? Working in a safe, secure environment?"

You can't help but snort at that jab, "Yeah, gonna be real strange being able to work without anyone trying to kill me. Says a lot that one of the safest places I've ever been is a forge with hot iron and sharp tools".

The elf just rolls her eyes at you, "Who knows what you're going to do without Blight, bandits, and death machines coming down on top of you".

"I'm sure something'll come for me," There's a note of self-deprivation in your tone.

Your conversation halts briefly as food is placed in front of you two, digging into the assortment of dumplings.

"Ah," You say in between bites, "I am going to be running out to meet up with an old friend tonight".

"Old friend or 'old friend'?" Sierra questions.

"Both... Eh, more the former than the latter," You swallow heavily, "We're going for a bar crawl, so if you want to retain your dignity I'd suggest staying off the streets tonight".

She snickers a bit, and the two of you enjoy the remainder of your meal.

Finishing up, you run up to your room to drop off your stuff. Taking the time for a quick wash, you dust off the clothes you wrapped your precious loot in as best you can and throw them on.

Well, you might as well see where the old man is. First and foremost, you clip back on your sword and dagger. You are going to be going around getting plastered, but you might as well defend yourself while you do.

So, after getting your gear in order, you head downstairs and exit the Inn. You've apparently got great timing, since you spot Goo Hwi approaching right now.

"Hey, Goo Hwi!" You yell out to catch his attention before approaching.

He blinks a bit before focusing on you, "Ah, John; there you are. We were wondering where you ran off to".

"Yeah, sorry about that," You scratch your head a bit, "Job took a bit longer than I thought it would".

Goo Hwi scratches his chin for a bit, "Well, it was nice enough I suppose. A shame I couldn't meet up with him before he died, but there's nothing I can do about that".

Ouch, "Ah... That's too bad".

"We knew each other for a very long time; there wasn't much left between us to say. From the sound of it, he was at peace in his last moments. At the end of the day, that's all you can ask for" Goo Hwi gives you a smile.

"You're right," You nod to him, "How were things while I was gone? Was Sierra alright?"

"She was fine," Unless you're mistaken, there's a twinkle of humor in his voice, "Her brother came by a few times, interesting lad that one".

"And did anything happen?"

"Nothing out of the ordinary." He just nods to you, "Don't worry about things too much, we can take care of ourselves".

"I know," You just shrug at him, "Anyways, just wanted say hello, I'll see you around".

Walking along, you really shouldn't be surprised when a few minutes later you note that someone is tailing you.

This is rapidly becoming old hat for you so, considering that you want to meet up with Dutch sometime this night, you turn right around with a hand on your sword.

"Alright, asshole, you can come out now" You make sure to speak nice and loud to your pursuer.

You weren't expecting for the figure to trip on something and fall right out of the shadows. The figure jumps up almost instantly and scurries off.

Despite the individual's incredible dexterity, you still manage to get a glimpse of unnaturally pale skin and a lithe form underneath the cloak.

Wasting no more time, you just continue on your way to the bar.

Finally arriving, you find the place decently filled, though a familiar person is holding a seat for you at the bar.

"Yo, about time you got here," Dutch yells out and gestures for you to join him, "What the hell were you up to?"

He pushes a shot glass already primed and ready to you which you gladly take up, "Nothing too major".

It's been a while but godsdamn is it good to be partying with Dutch again. Thanks to the fact that you're in a Genovese bar currently, the booze is cheap so neither of you let up on the shots for a while. After the second bottle is polished off, the two of you decide to shoot the shit for some time.

Sounds like things were pretty quiet back in Airgrid, from what your friend said, though your own stories of idly wandering the Badlands are similarly boring.

But, it doesn't make things any less entertaining.

There's a few people that come and go, though none of them really stay for long or make any kind of lasting impression on you. At least no one tries to pick a fight, a rather nice change of pace from the norm.

You've lost track of time at this point, and Dutch is pretty well and truly gone after the two of managed to convince the bartender to pass over one last bottle.

The question is what to do now?

Yeah, there's no reason to risk things. Slapping 50 copper onto the bar top to pay for your alcohol and a tip, you wrestle a bit with Dutch to get him into the right position. It takes a bit, but eventually you manage to throw him over your shoulder.

Making your way onto the quiet streets of the Earth District, the cold night air sobers you up a bit and you keep a sharp eye out for anyone who might trailing you. Thankfully, you don't see anyone around who is too interested in your presence.

Due to your slightly clear head, you manage to make it back to the Dragon's Lair Inn without an issue. No one is up, so you use the back entrance to quietly make your way to your room without waking anyone.

It takes unceremoniously dumping Dutch onto the floor so you have both your hands free before you can get your door open.

Once inside, you place your friend down on your bed, remove your sword and dagger, and crawl in next to him. There's not much room between you two, but you've had to do this kind of thing before so it's not an issue.

Sleep comes almost immediately after you close your eyes, the alcohol in your system putting you into a deep, dreamless rest that you're unconsciously thankful for.

> Gonna have to pause things here for now, have to run to go take another midterm in a few minutes. I'll be back later on tonight to continue things for a while. See you all then.

>>1914058

Waking up in the morning is a slightly painful experience. You've done this kind of thing before, but getting out of bed after a night out drinking is always a bit of a struggle to get moving.

After a few false starts, you manage to get to the washroom. Hosing yourself down with cold water sets your teeth chattering, but once you're fully awake you shift over to hot.

Feeling a bit more human, you make your way back to your room. Dutch is still fast asleep, completely out cold.

Looking out the window, the sun is already risen though not by much. Checking your gauntlet, it's now just after 6 am.

You should probably get going to work, and it doesn't look like your old friend is going to be cognitive for a while.

Writin'
>>

Yeah, he's not getting up anytime soon. Making sure he's not going to fall out of the bed, you grab a spare piece of paper from your desk and scribble out a quick note to him.

Most of it is where the Inn is located, where you're going, and that this is extremely neutral ground. You emphasis that last bit. You also include the location of the washroom, figuring he's probably going to need it. To end it all off, you throw in a bit of literal tongue in cheek humor and fold the note so it stands upwards.

Leaving your room, you manage to hail down one of the early rising staff members and get a glass of water. Making the quick stop to leave it next to the note, you grab a fast breakfast and leave the Inn.

Today's a slightly cloudy day, with the sun peaking through at points. Remembering the previous night, you make sure to watch your back while making your way to the Fire District. Once again, it's a rather quiet walk.

The various workshops and forges of the district are already in full swing, the sound of hammers clanging away ring all around.

The Main Bastion is open and slightly busy, though it's with a much more sleepy air than the rest of the Fire District.

Now what?

I've been rather generous with what you can get away based on the setting. However, please keep in mind that building a computer and building a full fledged AI are two very different things. Hell, IC John might have heard legends of the Age of God, but those legends would be bare fragments of what once was. I said that there were AI's back during that time because it was an OoC question.

As for what's going on with the tech level of this setting, a lot of stuff has been salvaged and reverse engineered from Ruins, but that does not mean that there is a 100% knowledge retention through the ages. A lot, and I mean A LOT, of knowledge has been lost to the passage of time and to the Blight.

As for Soul Transmutation and all that, I have something in mind. It'll be coming up in the arc after the time skip. Hint: Soul Transmutation is classified under Blood Magic
>>
>>1918212

Also, what exactly are we doing at the Main Bastion?

It's currently a three way tie between the three options.
>>
>>1918221
talk to the clerks

and we were just thinking about making a "if A happened do B" AI and trying to work our way up. that has been the plan from what I remember.

>>1918210
fair enough, I don't thing that's two far out of the realms of possibility and we have a rudimentary system of communications, so we might be able to control them but now the oh so critical question. what use would it serve? why would we replace parts of our brain with nano machines, it makes us vendible with no benefits

and oh shit........blood magic ........... welp lets hoope we don't have to use it
>>
I appreciate the thought you put into this OP.

I'd leave soul transmutation and blood magic interest up 'til mid life crisis at least.
>implying it won't be waifu's initiative when she sees her spouse wasting before her eyes

Anyway, I maintain that first milestone we'd be working towards as far as robotics are concerned would be an (semi?)autonomous pet, preferably with vision linkable to our pipboy
>>
>>1918241
The idea is that nano machines are more durable than our squishy meatbag bits, so we can live longer with our elf waifu.

Actually, we could just make them repair the host's body so it stays forever young. Also, stronger, faster, better. Life never ending, man, how is that not beneficial? Something's telling me that's how the whole Blight business started
>>
>>1918241

I know you're making your way up the tech tree, but it's a rather astronomical reach from computers to AI in this setting.

>>1918294

No problem, this setting kinda needs to be fully fleshed out to maintain consistency. As for mid life crisis, you better hope that John lives that long. Yeah, with a bit more time in the story, you could build a golem of your own.

>>1918298

Who can say how the Blight was created? After all, the pain of their connection to the Gods being severed drove many a man mad...
>>
>>1918324

I gotta run for a bit, be back in about an hour, so figure out what you guys want to do in the coming moments/months.

Aside from that, I wanted to ask you all how the ratio of conflict/combat time to down/mundane time is for the story? Too much combat, too much down time? That kind of thing.
>>
>>1918387
I feel like there's a bit too much down time.

As for what to do in the next months, I feel like learning more about how to make computers and software would be good.
>>
>>1918387
I think that it should go like

[days] we are learning the ins and outs of forging
[off time on days] we try reading up on subjects like runes
[nights] we alternate between learning coding/computers and a social life with serria and dutch and goo hwi
>>
>>1918387
Plans for timeskip:

work
>Smithing training
>odd jobs from the authorities to save up some cash as well as being able to spend on...

leisure
>Hanging out with Sierra (chats? dinners? maybe taking advantage of shirahoro's cultural events?)
>Hanging out with Goo Hwi (chats, maybe some combat training?)
>Maybe hitting the bars with Dutch once in a while (with temperance.. let's avoid passing out)

and tinkering
>examine remainder of the robotic loot, experiment with magitech servos, maybe begin conceptualising a spiderbot design?

>I wanted to ask you all how the ratio of conflict/combat time to down/mundane time is for the story? Too much combat, too much down time? That kind of thing.
Personally I feel that the ratio has been good so far.
>>
>>1918430
please note that the tinkering with our recently deceased "hot head" is allocated with our off days

and I personaly think the pacing, while having lots of down time, is how an actual person lives their life in this place not just running around beating the shit out of this that and the other.

[the fact we keep dodging attempts to put us there is a minor skill of ours]
>>
>>1918387
>Plans
work: smithing training and odd jobs from the authorities to keep the funds coming
leisure: hang out with friends - Sierra, Dutch, Goo Hwi. Take Sierra to theater or something, there's gotta be some cultural or otherwise interesting thing to do in town this size. Maybe some combat training with Goo Hwi could be called for as well.

As for tinkering, I guess we should examine rest of the hardware we have from the robot and begin conceptualising our first mechanical creation - I propose a spiderbot with camera that would relay its sight to our not!pipboy, either remotely controled or semi/autonomous. I mean we can't do it yet, but John could begin figuring out what he needs to make, salvage and learn.
>Aside from that,
I like what you're doing so far
>>
>>1918468
sorry for sort-of doublepost, seems my connection derped
>>
>>1918387
I think the amount of downtime is perfect. The way you write everything is great, it really gets us invested in the setting-which is wonderful. I'm sure I speak for many anons when I say that we are excited to see you flesh out this world you've created more and let us interact with it.
As for the time skip, I hope we can pad our weak areas such as coding and runes. Maybe trade some knowledge in areas where we know quite a bit, but learn new techniques and subtleties we aren't aware of.
I personally would like to get more hands on in some days when something notable happens, like a city wide festival or something similar with Sierra, Dutch, Goo Hwi, the whole crew. Or any random events that might be character building or challenging or impact something else later on.
>>
>>1918212

Alright, cool. Just checking to make sure that the pacing is good. Part of the reason that this timeskip is happening is because I'd rather not have several in game months of 'you wake up to another average day wat do?'. I'll end up running out of ideas on how to keep things interesting, not to mention that the story will crawl to a halt.

Things will be picking up quite a bit during the later half of the time skip/after it so don't worry about too much down time. You're gonna need that time to get ready for what's to come.

>>1918430
>>1918431
>>1918457
>>1918589

You will have the time and opportunities to work on your own projects, get some time in with the others, and level your skills up. I'll keep those suggestions in mind, and I'll see what I can do for random encounters and events; gotta get a few more plot hooks in.
>>
>>1918752
Are we going to hear about how the mafia feud develops during the timeskip?
>>
>>1918774

Thanks to the fact that you didn't kill anyone during the train escape, most of the feud is being fought above board in the courtrooms as the Genovese Don is basically brow beating the poor stand in for the Gambino Don, who is currently still 'missing', with your evidence. If you had chosen to rejoin the Genovese mob, you would have heard about this a bit more (I honestly forgot about it if I'm being honest).

However, who knows if it'll come up again? After all, you haven't heard of nor seen Rider, Dozer, Creep, or Bishop around...

Yeah, odds are the Sun was a bit busy running the entirety of the Bastion and all that. Simple shit.

Regardless, you decide that you should probably just talk to one of the clerks to look for a job offer. It's not all that hard to find one sitting at his desk and after presenting your Proofs he gives you a few options.

> Repair the Signal System that is used to communicate from the Defensive Lines back to the Bastion. Payment of 25 silver coins upon completion.
> Help calibrate and repair Rangefinders used to give targeting solutions to the Heavy Clockwork Siege Weapons. Payment of 5 silver coins per Rangefinder in working condition

Might as well take two of them, the Rangefinder and R&D contract. Well, not really a contract for R&D. The clerk helpfully informs you that working with R&D is a kind of 'open' contract, meaning that multiple people could take it and, for the most part, it could be taken multiple times. He also tells you that the Rangefinder job is here in the Main Bastion while R&D is down in the Armory.

With that information, you find the room here in the Bastion in question. After introducing yourself, you find that there's a crate of Rangefinders, some damaged some not, that a few soldier types are working on. Some are going to need help calibrating and some are going to need repair.

You try your hand at calibrations first, using your knowledge of Datalinks and how networked devices work to try to get it to work properly.

It's a good thing that you don't pride yourself in calibrating Rangefinders, because you only manage to get one in working order before you get a bit frustrated and move onto the ones that are actually broken.

A bit more in your element, you make surprisingly good time going through the damaged and soiled equipment.

After about two hours of work, you've got a fair amount of progress done.

Yeah, you should probably get moving. As much fun as it's been to mess around with these Rangefinders, checking out the Armory sounds a bit better than sitting around here all day long.

You grab your fixed Rangefinders and bring them over to a nearby desk monkey looking perpetually bored out of his mind. He tallies up your work, sorts through a few bags, eventually throwing you your pay.

> You have obtained: 35 silver pieces!

Idly thanking the man, you leave the Bastion and make your way to the Armory. Finding the same skittish clerk from the other day, you ask him for some directions. He points you to the deepest portion of the Armory, mumbling to himself about something or the other.

Following his directions, you find yourself entering a very large, isolated section of the Armory. There's several work tables on one side, a few boxes of scrap and metal lying around, two sets of forges and tools to use, and what's a firing range or testing area on the other.

There's a few guys milling about, working on a some gear. Introducing yourself to one of them gives you a rundown on what's to be expected.

Basically, most of the men on the Defensive Line use a Clockwork Rifle not entirely unlike you're own. They're pretty good weapons, but naturally you don't want a gun that'll maybe kill something if you shoot it.

The man says you're free to work on things however you wish and, so long as you actually try, you'll get paid even if you don't make any kind of breakthrough.

So, where to begin?

You wouldn't be able to keep anything you make down here, since quite literally nothing you are using is yours. This is more to build skill ranks and test out new designs.

Something to keep in mind is that anything you produce here will likely end up in service to the Daimyo. This can be a good thing, and a bad thing. Just something to consider.

Writin'

This is going to take some time, and odds are pretty good that you'll be here until evening. So, might as well use that time to the fullest.

First and foremost, you ask the man to wait for a moment before reaching into your bag and pulling out your personally modified Rifle.

The man freezes for a moment, the quickly asks if he can borrow it for a while. With the promise that if he breaks it you'll get a new one for free, you hand it off and he scurries off to a nearby workbench.

Now, you want to try your hand at making a rifle from scratch as well as see what else you can do to the existing rifle frame. So, deciding you might as well test the limits of what the existing ones can do, you grab one off a rack and get to work modifying it.

More like "Heavy Gear" John strike once again.
>>
>>1922980

Thinking on things, you can't think of any real improvements you could make to the existing Rifle design. After all, the weapon in question has probably had an innumerable number of small tweaks to it since its usage in this era began.

So, you switch gears slightly and begin thinking of one thing that the Rifle really, really did not do well at: non-lethal take downs. Now, usually tasers were utilized if you wanted to bring down someone hard and fast, but the draw back was that they were either point-blank or melee weapons.

That's where you put your thought process into. You're going strong for a while with a net launcher type system, utilizing a cord connected to the weapon itself and the net. It would function to both deliver the incapacitating shock, and pull the net, or it's contents, back to the user. But that idea comes to a grinding halt when you try to consider just how precise this would be. That vital cord would undoubtedly cause the net to be fired erratically, as the webbing of it would not be heavier than the cord being dragged behind it.

Angrily scrapping that idea, you shift gears slightly. The launcher wasn't a bad idea, but the projectile was the problem. Not only that, but you really only needed enough juice to deliver one shock otherwise you were just going to end up with a live wire wrapped around someone...

Running with the inspiration, you make a few more adjustments before you feel satisfied with how the blueprint turned out.

> You have created: 1 Bola Launcher Blueprint!

Making sure to save a copy for yourself, you set the original out and get ready to start forging a prototype.

Almost an hour passes before you give up. Simply put, you don't have enough experience to make the parts for the launcher. You know what you need to make, and you know how it'll interact with the rest of the design, but you just can't make it.

Slightly frustrated, you make sure to smelt the metal used back to a roughly ingot form and you toss them onto the 'used' pile.

Taking a seat back at the workbench, you think of what you can work on next.

Maybe a pair of taser bolas that can be thrown manually, perhaps with a cord to hold that acts as a dead mans trigger, in which you 'prime' the bolas while holding it, spin it around, then throw it, activating the shock.

Pushing your previous idea to the side, you consider the entire opposite side of the spectrum. Thinking back to your times using it, the Clockwork Rifle is a good all around weapon. Which meant that, in reality, it did a lot of things well enough and didn't really do anything well.

Hell, you got shot right in the chest and, while you were wearing some pretty good armor, it didn't even knock the wind out of you.

So, perhaps, it's time you thought of a variant that focused on sheer firepower.

Considering what you have on hand, you initially decide to create two versions: one prototype that could test the concept now and one theoretical that could push the limits of just how big of a round a gun could fire before it became a bolt caster.

It takes some time, but eventually you work out blueprints, with copies for yourself, of both variants.

Regardless, you manage to forge out the components of your prototype. It's hard going in places, as you're really not used to Gun Smithing, but you somehow manage to make it work.

Bringing the pile of parts back to your table, you get to work on making this all fit together.

Assembling ends up being a rather massive learning experience for you, surprisingly enough. Just working on putting everything together gives you a few ideas on how to further improve both variant and you make sure to note those changes down as you work.

At the end of the process, you've got the prototype in hand. The lighter version uses the same magazines that the usual Clockwork Rifles use, though you have to manually cock the action after each shot due to the design you went with. At least it's not the theoretical rifle, which from calculating the increased caliber of round, you had to design the weapon to be single-shot breach-loaded. Definitely not a weapon to use on the run.

Regardless, you've got the rifle in hand. Might as well give it a test fire.

Making sure to be careful with it, you load one round into the magazine and give it a try.

You can definitely tell that this rifle variant is more accurate and probably has a longer range than the standard. The same man from before listens to your explanation of such with rapt interest. Making sure that he's got a good grip on it, you hand off the prototype to him with only a slight amount of reluctance.

Checking the time, you've got the chance to try out one more thing before the day is done.

Considering you don't have too much time left, you decide to simply grab a spare pistol from the rack and work on carefully pulling it apart. It's a basic piece, but it still is good to work on the basics.

Making sure that it still works after putting it back together, you mess about with a few other parts of the handgun.

You think you've learned quite a bit down here, but you'll need to sort it all to know exactly what you have gained.

After putting the handgun back where it belongs, you begin to pack up your things. The man from before approaches you with your rifle, thankfully still all together, and a bag of coins. Turns out that your work neted you some extra pay for the blueprints, upgrades, and the working prototype.

So, you decide to head on back to the Inn. The streets aren't too crowded yet, so it's easy going the entire way there. Against your better nature, you're a bit thankful when the building comes into sight intact and in one piece.

"Nope!" Gang Ryong smiles at you, "He didn't stay for long; ran off in a hurry!"

"Well, that's good I suppose..." There's a bit of an awkward silence between the two of you before you just wave to him again and walk by, "I'll see you around".

Walking in, you spot a few usual suspects around; regulars coming in to grab a quick bite to eat. You don't actually see Sierra or Goo Hwi around at first, and you're about to look again when someone grabs your attention.

"John, got a sec?"

Turning to the side, you see Gladiator of all people hanging out just casually eating his dinner.

"Yeah, I've got a moment. What's going on?" You question as you slide into the seat aside from him.

"Don't worry," He leads with, keeping his tone light, "Just another contract; follow up job from the last one. I'm sure you know what I mean, and I don't think you'll have any issue with it".

The man passes a rolled up piece of paper, the contract, to you. You take it, not opening it yet, but rather tuck it away for now, "Thanks, I'll see what it is about".

Gladiator just snorts slightly, finishing up the remnants of his meal, "You do that. I'll see you around". And with that he gets up and leaves.

Getting up yourself, you're tempted to pull the contract out and read it when you're once again interrupted.

"John! You're back!" There's Sierra, coming out from the inn side of the establishment. She walks up to you, glancing a bit at the leaving form of Gladiator, "Uh, was that a 'friend' of yours?"

Sierra just raises an eyebrow, "Another journey into the middle of no where?"

"Not likely," You sit down, pulling the contract out and on the table. Staring at it for a moment, you just unroll it and look it over.

It's about what you expect from what Archmage said, more or less a meeting of a few experts to figure out how to get the computers found during your Dive into a usable configuration, and to figure out how to reverse engineer the technology.

Like before, there's a non-disclosure clause that's really the only binding part of the contract. The pay's pretty nice as well: 10 gold pieces upon completion. Sounds like it'll take all of tomorrow though.

"So, what's it about?" The elf's voice breaks you out of your focus on the contract, raising your head to see her sitting there politely waiting.

"It's what I thought it would be. Nothing actually dangerous this time, just working on figuring out a few things that we found" You say, making sure to keep the specifics out.

"Well," Sierra says, huffing a bit, "I suppose that's quite the leg up from your usual gigs, hmm?"

"Try not to sound too happy now," You can't help but laugh a bit.

"If I'm gonna get anywhere in this city, I need money," You state calmly after the moment passes, "Money and knowledge. Unfortunately I can't gain much of either of those things without going out into the world, to the dangerous edges of it, as that's where innovation lies".

"But enough of that!" With far more enthusiasm, you stand up, "Considering I'm going to be busy all day tomorrow, what do you say to going out tonight for dinner? My treat".

There's a slight chuckle out of her before she stands as well, "Well, with an offer like that, how can I refuse?"

You laugh along with her, turning towards the inn part of the building, "Right, well, I need to get cleaned after the day I've had. If you'll excuse me..."

Walking for a couple of steps, you stop. Turning on your heel, you can't help the sly grin on your face.

With one last laugh, you head to your room to grab your change of clothing, then hit the washroom. Before long, you're cleaned up.

"This work for you?" You ask, looking over at Sierra. Apparently she's already made up her mind as she was halfway to the door when you ask your question.

She turns, looking over her shoulder at you, "Is there something wrong with it?"

Before you can respond, your stomach grumbles rather loudly. It's with a blank look on your face that you state, "No".

Entering inside, the place is pretty well and full of people out to eat. Laughter and good cheer fills the room.

Thankfully, there's an open table in a corner that you're directed to. Considering you haven't eaten since breakfast, you take a quick look at the menu before ordering something called 'Beef Pho'. You have no idea what it is or means, but you hope they can screw up beef too much.

Sierra's looking out over the crowd around the two of you, just enjoying the moment.

"So, how was your day?" Might as well start this on a simple note.

Sierra doesn't seem to mind as she turns to face you and smiles, "A bit quiet, but other than that it was fine".

"That's good"

"The morning was rather interesting, however".

Now, you're a bit curious, "Oh? What happened?"

"Well, I ran into a certain friend of yours"

Oh... Right.

"Yeah, that was Dutch. He was out cold before we finished up last night, so I brought him back; was better than letting him sleep it off on a bar counter. I hope he wasn't too much of a trouble".

"No, not at all. Just imagine my surprise when I see a guy armed to the teeth walking out of your room. He explained things quickly before running off in a hurry".

"Well... that's good..." You trail off as Sierra gives you a look.

"...You're worried, about him that is," She just smiles a bit at the look you give her, "I'm not an idiot; I've seen you worried before but those times were in moments of danger, not peace. You care a fair bit about him, don't you?"

You just huff in response, "Someone's gotta, gods know he ain't gonna do it himself".

This gets a full out laugh out of her and after a moment you cave in as well.

"How long have the two of you known each other?"

You turn back to her and smile, "Dutch's been more of a brother to me than my own family, but that's neither here nor there".

"I see..." Sierra trails off, taking a sip of water.

"Don't worry about it too much," You wave a hand, "It's in the past; ain't gonna go anywhere from there".

"What? Can't share them with me?" You give her a grin.

"Unfortunately," She smirks even more, "You're not his type".

"Well, that's just too bad," You fake sighing in sadness, "Although, I suppose I could get those stories another way".

"And, pray tell, how would you accomplish that?" Sierra still has a smug look on her face, resting her chin on her palm.

"I could just go see what kind of dirt your brother has on you," You lean in, letting your smile widen, "After all, do I not go to the sibling of the one I am courting for embarrassing stories?"

There's a moment of incomprehension before the smirk slides off her face.

That's... a rather amusing shade of red Sierra's got going for her.

It's at that moment when your food arrives. You're not entirely sure what to make of what's in front of you, so you decide to just slide the plate of beef right into your soup(?). It takes a bit of work to use the utensils at your disposal, but you do get to shoveling the food into your mouth.

It's not bad, rather good actually; just a bit strange to eat is all. Your companion is slowly working on her own food, a perpetually embarrassed expression on her face. Her eyes flick up to meet yours, looking up to see your cheerful visage staring back at her.

Oh, this is not going to get old anytime soon...

"Mmm," She hums a bit, swallowing what's in her mouth before talking, "Good, I suppose. I've got an interview or sorts tomorrow morning. Turns out that one of my brother's 'girlfriends' was looking for a bartender for a place her grandfather runs. So, I'll be heading over there".

"That's interesting, what District is it in?"

"The Cloud District".

"Oh ho ho," You grin at her, "Someone's moving up in the world; going right up to the top, hmm?"

"Yeah, well..." Sierra scratches her cheek a bit, "It'll be different, that's for certain".

"Do you miss your old place back in Bo Shan?" You've been curious about this for some time.

"A bit," She pushes her food around for a bit, "I'll be honest, the place wasn't the best..."

"But it was your place, right?"

"Yeah," Sierra nods, "That's about it. I'll be honest, I don't want to go back to that place, as much as I sometime miss it. I'm... happy here, I suppose. I've got a job offer from a well respected establishment, my brother is here, and..."

He's this perpetually pissed off dwarf, though he does look like he knows what he's doing. After that, I'm going to look into buying a workshop or forge of my ow-"

It's at this point that you're interrupted by the sound of laughter. Sierra' laughter.

"Oh, c'mon," You say, trying to fight back a grin, "I told ya I could do it!"

There's a slight giggle to her voice as she tries to hold back laughter, "I-I never said you couldn't. Just was unlikely is all".

"Sure," Rolling your eyes a bit for dramatic effect, you eat a bit more of your noodles, "I'll probably wander off from time to time, so I'll need someone to watch the shop..."

You purposefully trail off, staring Sierra right now.

She looks thoughtful for a moment, before realizing that you're still staring at her, "M-Me?"

"Noo..." Grinning wildly, you can't help but tease her some more, "I have a few friends in the Main Bastion that I'm sure wouldn't mind".

You burst out laughing when the elf flat out pouts at your comments.

The two of you continue to enjoy your meal, finishing up with a fair amount of speed as your food is beginning to cool.

Final bill ends up not being too bad, so you gladly pay it with a bit of tip.

> You have lost: 30 copper coins!

"Well, that was good," Sierra states as the two of you walk outside, "Geez, I wasn't expecting it to be this late..."

The streets have noticeably thinned out since you began your meal, that's for certain. Checking the time, it's almost 11:30 PM.

"Hey, John," She quietly turns to you, "I had a great time tonight, though I do need to run back to the Inn now. Gotta wake up early and all that..."

There is a subdued air around your little slice of the world, the other denizens of Shirahoro walking, talking, and living about. The night is cool, but not cold, with a calm breeze gently moving through the air.

The Fire District ends, leading you into the Earth District. There's more people out on the streets here, most evidently drunk, but the good cheer is still out and about.

Even still, you can't help but check over your shoulder every once and a while...

The crowds wax and wane, though you don't see anyone suspicious among the people. After a few minutes, you stop worrying about the people on street level.

It's slight and bare, but you notice a few individuals on the rooftops. You can't see anything on their person, but you do note that they're wearing very similar clothing to the idiot who fell on his face.

They're not directly tailing you, but they're definitely trying to stay out of sight.

Ignoring them, you continue your way to the Inn without further problem.

Eventually, the two of you have to break off. It's a slightly awkward moment, as neither of you want to separate, but unfortunate circumstance of work in the morning forces the two of you to your rooms.

Settling in for the night, you slump onto your bed and quickly fall asleep.

Munching on the last of your breakfast, you decide you might as well get going. No real point in hanging around.

Saying goodbye on your way out, you head for the Water District. The streets are empty, the few early risers along with you make their first sleepy steps to the morning.

There's no one on your tail, to your subtle relief, and you leave the Earth District without issue. Here, the cold cobblestone streets are not quite bustling but there's definitely more people out and about. A few guys hanging out on a street corner meet your gaze for a moment before nodding, which you return; guess they're Gladiator's guys.

Eventually you make it to the Genovese building, the front free of the mob that was around when you first visited. Walking up, one of the guards holds the door open for you. A bit surprised at the hospitality, you thank the man and enter the main lobby.

Inside, there's a bored looking blonde working the front desk who glances up at you as you enter.

"John, correct?" She calls out, picking at her nails a bit.

"Yeah, that's me," You response as you approach.

"Archmage is on the second floor, first room on the right waiting for you," With her job apparently done, the secretary goes right back to working on her nails.

Without further comment, you head for the stairs.

Thinking about it, this is a good chance to get some info on what's been going on with Shirahoro's underground.

"You've got your ear to the ground, yeah?" He doesn't look up, but he does grunt in acknowledgement, "You wouldn't happen to hear anything about suspicious individuals in the Earth District?"

He stops at your words, slowly turning to you, "Not exactly. Why, what's happened?"

You adjust yourself, drumming your fingers on the tabletop, "There's been a few people following me: dark clothes, face covered, only show up at night. Just wondering if you know anything".

"That's certainly curious," Archmage adjusts his glasses, "I haven't exactly heard anything about those specific individuals. But..."

"But what?" The tone he's using isn't encouraging right now.

There's a deep sigh from him before he speaks, "A contact of mine in the Earth District has gone silent. I've been busy, and haven't been able to properly look into it before now, but things don't look good from what I can tell".

Well, it certainly sounds like something he doesn't want to talk about. So, you change the subject, "Where's Dutch currently?"

"Hmm? The Gunslinger? Well, if I'm remembering right he's helping to train a few of Gladiator's men down by the docks," The man doesn't look too interested in your friend, though he does sound a bit better than before.

"That's good," You're not going to lie and say you're not happy to hear that Dutch isn't being sent out on the kind of jobs the two of you used to go on, "Actually, how have things been doing with the Gambino's?"

Surprisingly enough, Archmage laughs a bit at this, "The Don's been having a field day with that".

"So things have been well?"

"Very".

He goes back to his work as the conversation dies down.

Eventually, you do get bored, so you start poking around the computers. Archmage scowls at you when you pull out your tools, so you're forced to resort to just looking for now.

The tech is interesting, most definitely, to look at. Just from what little you can see, you can tell that this stuff is a few notches above the best computers on the market. Can't wait to dig in...

"Sorry for the wait!" At this point, the two of you look up as someone walks through the door. The man's wearing rather nice attire, definitely not a docks worker, though it's not exactly formal wear.

"Kaizaki, I presume," Archmage speaks up, "Please, come in".

"I'm John, pleased to meet you," Might as well start off professionally, though something he said kind of confuses you, "... expert?"

Archmage just shrugs, "You are one".

"I suppose... Anyways, don't worry about that too much," You turn back to this Kaizaki, "I do what I do, just a bit better than others currently. What's your specialty?"

He smiles brightly at you, "Computers and coding, mostly".

That's... a really bright smile. You glance at Archmage again.

"So what exactly do you want us to do?"

He adjusts his glasses, "The two of you are going to be working on breaking down and reverse engineering this tech. Do remember to remove the hard drives before you start pulling things apart, I'm going to be working with the translators to figure out how to convert their language to ours. If we're successful, I'd like you to try to figure out how their coding system works Kaizaki".

"Can do, sir"

Well, he's certain professional. That's good.

"Well, let's get to it then," You pull out your tool kit and pull one of the computers over to you.

First up is getting the hard drive out safely.

Thankfully, despite the fact that the tech is unfamiliar to you, there are some things that remain constant. Like wires, and screws. Those you know plenty well enough.

In a few short minutes, you've got the hard drive removed and in one piece. Archmage swipes it off the table barely after you've put it down. He walks off to the other side of the table where a few other people are sitting and talking, a semi-bulky computer next to them. The removed hard drive gets jury rigged and the lot of them get to work, pouring over both the screen and a few rather large tomes spread out in front of them.

"That went well," You idly comment.

Kazaki laughs a bit, "It's quite impressive to see you work".

"Thanks," Is your dry response.

"Let's see if we can figure out how this machine ticks".

With that, you and Kaizaki spend your time drawing out several diagrams and system maps of the computer's internals. You're not entirely sure how long it takes, as you just get absorbed into your work like usual, but at least two hours have passed at this point.

Kaizaki is definitely an expert on computers, as he's the one who does the majority of the work identifying the major system. For the most part, you're helping him out when it comes to identifying some of the more archaic devices, or when it comes to deciphering the mess of wiring and circuits.

Regardless, you've got a small pile of parchment that should suffice to help with building similar items. You make sure to snag a few copies.

Unfortunately, you have to keep the Multitool away due to the delicate nature of your work.

Thankfully, you do not need it as you thoroughly take apart the computer's components. As you do, there's a few things that you pick up on as you work, so you sort through the pile of blueprints and notes and make corrections or slight adjustments where needed.

At some point, Kazaki must have been called over to the other group, as when you finally finish and raise your head up he's no long beside you.

It's taken you several hours to do properly, but you've still managed to succeed.

> Congratulations! You have obtained an intimate knowledge of the intricacies of Computers. You now have a +15 bonus modifier to any check made with the Maintenance, Modify, and Build skills while working with computers!

From the sounds of things, the other group's making progress. In a few minutes, there's a few shouts of surprise and joy.

After a bit, Archmage walks over to you and thanks you for your work.

> You have obtained 10 gold pieces!

There's nothing really else to do, so you start packing your belongings away. The others have already gathered their things and are making their way out. Kazaki gives you once last smile before leaving.

You're about to leave when you feel something slip into your hand.

"Don't do anything stupid, John," Is Archmage's only advice for you as he leaves you alone.

Looking down, you find a simple USB stick in your hands.

> You have obtained: Specialized Translation Program!

Well, that'll be helpful.

Leaving the building, you find yourself in the late afternoon sun. It's just after 5 pm at this point. Time to decide on what to do next:

Is our gauntlet computer secure from outside tampering? Over the datalink I mean.

Can we copy the translator on it?

Also am I understanding it correctly that the translator was a bonus payment?

Let's take a scenic route to the inn, maybe browsing some hardware stores on our way back for anything we might need for our hobby work.

Kazaki
>>

After you realized that the datalink was no longer connected to Rider's computer, you shut off the wireless connection. You've been running in 'offline' mode so to speak ever since.

You could copy the program over, but keep in mind that you'll probably max out your storage.

The translator was given to you because Archmage knows you're working on your own projects with this tech.

You can try to find a shop to buy things.

I'm for finding a bank to put our gold in. It'd be a shame to get mugged and have all of our hard earned money taken. Also maybe find a more long term living arrangement near the bastion to keep our tech stuff and future computer, cause it might get expensive keeping a room at the inn long term

>>
>>1932746

The reward for aceing those awareness checks is knowing that there is a dubious group that is interested in you and that dialogue option where Archmage tells you that one of his contacts has gone missing. Two plot hooks right there.

Also, all these successful perception checks are slowly building you up to the next rank.

>>1931283

Thinking on it for a bit, there are a few things you'd like to do. Most of them have to do with the rather large chunk of change in your pockets currently.

You'll probably only be able to do one with the time you've got left in the day, so you'd best get moving.

Walking around with this much coin on hand is not going to be a smart idea; at some point something is going to happen. So, it's time to find a bank.

Well, if you actually knew where to find a bank that is. You could just ask Archmage, but the idea of getting involved in a mafia bank sounds like a fucking horrible idea.

Wandering around the Water District to try to find one is a distinct possibility, but it's one that you'd rather avoid.

On the other hand, you could just turn around and ask Archmage. He may not entire appreciate the request, but all you needed was directions so really it wouldn't be too much of a trouble.

Lastly, you can see Kazaki casually walking down the street. He might know a place, and he seems pretty neutral on this whole gang war thing going on.

So, what's the choice?

Thankfully, Kazaki is taking his sweet time so catching up to him isn't an issue in the slightest.

"Kazaki," You call out as you approach.

He jumps a bit in place, your voice snapping him out of his reverie, "J-John! Geez, don't sneak up on me like that..."

Kazaki scratches his head a bit in embarrassment, looking you over as you walk along him, "Do you mind if we walk for a bit?"

"Of course, of course!" He smiles at you, looking happy to have your company for a bit.

"About a week?" Thinking about it, you really haven't been here all that long. Seems like it's been much more than that, "Yeah, a week".

"What!" Kazaki looks shocked in the least, "Seriously? You're right off the boat, aren't you?"

"I walked into town but same difference," You shrug.

"Where were you before here?"

"Airgrid, then wandered the Badlands for a bit, then I came here".

"And how old are you?"

"19," Kazaki's disbelief slowly grows as you speak, looking at you like you're pulling his leg.

"You're pulling my leg, aren't you?"

"I'm not".

There's silence, then he breaks out laughing. You give him a confused look, which he waves off before scratching the back of his head again, "It's nothing, you just remind me of someone I know".

He looks rather embarrassed as he speaks.

Regardless, you back off a bit, "So what exactly is it that you do? I know you're a computer expert, but that doesn't really say much".

"Ah, well, I get called in for a lot of these kind of jobs. Usually the type that go 'this doesn't work make it work' and all that. But this was enjoyable, surprisingly, for a change. I'm just glad it wasn't as shady as it appeared..."

Guess your guess that he's not involved isn't too far off, "I've had plenty of those before... But, forget about that. Would you know any reputable banks about the area?"

"W-well..." Again, he looks embarrassed, "I'm heading to one now..."

"Then lead on," You motion for him to continue on his way.

The two of you make your ways through the Water District.

Considering how the last few days have gone for you, you keep your eyes peeled.

People are out and about now, walking from their work places as they finish the day, but none of them as suspicious.

Hell, you even check the rooftops and, to your surprise, there's no one around. From the looks of things, perhaps whatever group is trailing you doesn't operate in this District...

Eventually, you make it to a rather, respectable looking building. It's a grey-stone building with a few people inside. Kazaki gives you a grin and motions for you to enter. Guess you're doing this on your own...

Entering, you do feel a bit out of place here in considering you're still wearing your traveling clothes and pretty much everyone else is dressed like Kazaki is.

Seeing a lack of line, you walk right up to the clerk working.

"Hello, welcome to the National Bank of Shirahoro, how many I help you," The voice is cold and entirely neutral, though you don't sense any animosity interestingly enough.

"Yes, yes, I'd like to open an account here".

"ID and papers please".

The next few minutes are a droll blur of paperwork and signing off on forms. Despite the cold attitude, she helps you with any questions you have and has everything signed in triplicate.

Eventually, you've got the account opened and available for use.

"Would you like to deposit any coin into the account now," You think she's asking a question, but the inflection in her voice doesn't change at all.

You currently have 12 gold coins, 125 silver coins, and 80 copper coins.

> You have deposited: 11 Gold Coins!

The clerk takes the coins, checking each one of them for legitimacy. You feel a twist of nervousness as she does, but thankfully all your coin are in fact gold. After counting it up, she takes your booklet and jots down the deposit before stamping it.

She hands it back to you, and you thank her for her time.

"Thank you for your patronage, I hope you have a good day and that you do business with us again in the future," She states flatly, then her expression changes.

Christ that's horrifying...

"Y-You're welcome, I'm sure I'll be back," You manage to keep most of the shake out of your voice as you gather your things and prepare to leave.

Walking out of the place, Kazaki gives you one last time. He enters the bank after you.

Looking over your shoulder, you note that he walks right up to the same clerk as you.

Huh, well how about that.

All things considered, you're more tired than you realized. Considering how the last few days have gone, you should really head back. Want to be at your best when you start up your training tomorrow.

So, you head on your way. The streets of the Water District are bustling, but quiet as everyone goes their separate paths. Thankfully, no one tries to jump you or follow you so that's good.

The Earth District in contrast, is lively as usual. People are out, laughing and smiling, and you have no issue making it back to the Inn.

Everyone's around this time, and you enjoy a nice, quiet meal between yourself, Goo Hwi, and Sierra.

There's not much left to say, though they both wish you good luck for the coming months. After the meal, you head on up to your room to sleep.

By some miracle, your sleep is deep and restful. You're up just before the sun, and you get to your morning routine.

It's kind of chilly morning, clouds in the sky blocking out most of the sun causing the usual pleasant breeze coming off the water to have a bite to it. The cold might also be because of how early you're up, but that's neither here nor there.

So you walk along, keeping your hands in your pockets to attempt to ward off the chill. The comfortable weight of your entire belongings on your back helps a bit. Your coin pouch is a bit lighter, and not just because of your trip to the bank. You ended up having to drop 12 silver for paying for your stay at the Dragon's Lair.

At least they let you use the shower one last time...

Making your way to the Bastion, it's pretty empty from what you can see. Though, you don't get much of a chance to look around, because there's Godo waiting for you right now.

"YOU'RE LATE!" Is his bellowing call to you.

Considering just how early it is, you really can't help the deadpan expression on your face, "The sun's been up for maybe ten minutes".

"Then you're ten minutes late!"

Resisting the urge to grumble, you simple fall into step alongside him as you head to wherever it is you'll be training. A few turns later, and you arrive to a simple forge. In the corner is a simple cot.

"This is where we will be working until I am satisfied that allowing you to hold a Proof of Competency in Smithing won't be a massive disgrace to the entirety of the Daimyo!"

"Okay"

"You will work and train from dawn to dusk!"

"Okay"

"And you will be doing that work with THIS!"

The dwarf suddenly turns around, placing the same forging hammer that you quickly made to pass your test about a week ago.

"And if it breaks?"

"You build another one! Now, enough talk! We begin!"

Well, this is certainly going to be interesting...
