In a time of global conflict, the elite international task force Overwatch was formed. Soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities: together, they ended the Omnic Crisis and restored peace to a war-torn world. For a generation, the heroes of Overwatch protected the world, inspiring an era of exploration, innovation, and discovery.

After many years, Overwatch became troubled, and was finally disbanded by official U.N. order. Soon world conflict and terror rose again. Governments weakened by strife ceded power to mega-corporations. Militaries were replaced by private security forces. Some omnics returned to war with humanity; others remained peaceful, but faced fear and violence from humans affected by the war. The global crime syndicate Talon, in the absence of their perpetual rivals, rose to vast wealth and power, pushing entire nations into chaos.

You are a young man who's been many things: adventurer, treasure hunter, freedom fighter, and international criminal. But before all that, you dreamed of helping defend the world with Overwatch. When you encountered Tracer on that fateful night and agreed to help her rebuild, you didn't quite realize what you were getting yourself into. Joining as the first new recruit of the reborn team, you soon found yourself as unofficial leader in coalition with Athena, apparently the world's only benevolent Mind.

In the weeks since then, you, Tracer, and your new friends have travelled the globe, recruiting former agents and newcomers to the cause, and doing what you can to protect the citizens of Earth from the forces of chaos, oppression, and war. Although most people don't realize it yet, Overwatch has returned. But against Talon, Anubis, and the allied megacorps, is one small team of vigilantes really enough?

The world needs heroes, and you're trying to be one of them.

The first team of candidates for the new Overwatch security force, having arrived early this morning, now stand assembled, talking to each other in low voices. They quiet and straighten up as you and Reinhardt approach. The two of you are out of gear, just dressed in regular clothes printed by the base fabricator, yourself with a thick bandage wrapped around the hand that got chewed up by a robo-dog last night. However, while you look fairly ordinary without the fancy getup, Reinhardt is rather distinctive, so they correctly assume you're an agent as well.

The Overwatch veteran, the man you selected to be the initial leader of the security force, steps forward and salutes. "Good morning, sir. John Durant. Joined the first team in '67, by way of SAS." His voice has traces of a Yorkshire accent. He indicates a young woman with a brown ponytail next to him, and she salutes in turn. "My second, Maxine Larue, formerly of DGSE. As your contact requested, I've brought several others whose discretion can be relied on." He nods towards Reinhardt. "Good to see you again, sir. Glad to see you well."

"The pleasure is mine," Reinhardt says. "Weren't you at the operation in Odessa? A Sergeant at the time, if I recall."

"That was me, sir," Durant says. "It's a truly a pleasure to be back." The two men clasp hands in a manly handshake. You wince, looking at the vice-like grips being deployed against each other, and decide to shake the girl's hand instead.

"Seeker," you say to her.

"Enchanté," she replies, smiling.

"So," Durant says. "Who do we report to around here?"

You realize that, without a clear chain of command, that's actually a good question. "We're kind of informal around here," you admit. "Your primary contact will be, uh--"

"Your primary contact will be myself." I'm the one who handles deployments. Any questions about logistics, you can direct towards our good friend Athena, but you'll take your marching orders from me." Your heart is beating pretty fast in your chest -- trying to act like an authority figure in front of these veteran soldiers is making you nervous. You glance up and to the side, trying to read Reinhardt's expression, but he doesn't seem to have a problem with what you've said, so you keep going. "The dorms are just past the hangar, on your left. The forge is on the right. Claim yourself a bunk, and get your uniform and gear. We'll have work for you soon."

"Will do, sir," says Durant. "If I may ask, what kind of operations are we looking at? And can you tell us who we can expect to be up against?"

"We've got pretty much equal problems with omnics and humans, so you'll need to be ready for both," you say. "As for what I've got planned ..."

"Your primary task will be keeping this base safe. That means both securing against infiltration, and defending against direct assaults. We've already faced down two of those already, and I expect Talon to send a stealth agent any day now." That is, if they haven't already. You would know if they had. Right? "So yeah, you'll need to maintain security around the base, and have some prepared defensive positions in case of attack.

"That said, there's a chance we'll need your help in the field out there. So really, what I need from you guys is to be ready for anything.

"Once you've got your stuff, head to the training hall is just across from the commissary. Reinhardt here will see just what you're capable of."

The big German cracks the knuckles in his mighty fists. "I have thought of some new tests just recently which I am eager to try."

You say, "All right, uh, that's all. Glad to have you all on board."

Durant salutes. "Understood, sir." He turns to his team and barks orders, and they head off to the dormitory to pick their bunks, talking and laughing. They seem to be fairly relaxed about the whole situation of working for a vigilante paramilitary squad. Probably a step up from their usual employers.

When the soldiers arrive at the Forge to get their weapons from Torbjorn, and the uniforms you had the fabricator spit out the other day, they'll find:

Command Center

You bring up the latest satellite photographs on the main monitor to show everyone. "Earlier this evening, this tanker ship in the North Atlantic, belonging to an English shipping company, was taken over by Omnic terrorists claiming to be affiliated with Null Sector, the extremist group. Athena has intercepted their communications with the British government, saying that they've taking the crew hostage. They have demands for a whole list of things, among them is the release of various political prisoners, which includes the Mind responsible for planning the King's Row Uprising."

Several of the agents who were there on that infamous day are in the room to see this, and you can practically feel their blood boil from here. Terrible destruction took place there until Overwatch, in direct contravention of their U.N overseer's orders, intervened. Some say that incident was what led to the Petras Act and the group's official disbandment. You wonder if Morrison ever second-guessed his decision to send the team. And here you are, about to do the same thing.

"Athena thinks that with we can respond faster than either the British SAS or Helix, so we're going in. I'll lead the team, and--" You stop, noticing Tracer waving her hand in the air. "What is it, Tracer?"

"Can I come on the mission?" she asks. "Please? I'm tired of being cooped in 'ere!"

"Sheesh. Yeah, okay."

Mercy looks dubious. "Are you quite sure you're all right, Seeker?"

"I'm fine," you say. Turning away to hide your chewed-up hand, you flex it a couple times. It still hurts, actually, but you don't have time to worry about that. You bring up a plan

July 30, 2:00 AM GMT
North Atlantic

The Orca flies through the darkness, the sky lit only by a shrouded moon, its reflection disturbed in the turbulent ocean waters below. From the co-pilot's seat, you can see the lights of the tanker ship coming into view.

"There she is," Tracer says. "You want to do this like we talked about?"

"Sure do," you say.

You head down the stairs from the cockpit to check on the team. Mei doesn't look as nervous as she used to. You remember the conversation you had with her in the training room, where she expressed her determination to fight. She seems to be finding a new resolve. She laughs at something Mercy says. The doctor, as usual, is unperturbed, engaging Mei with small talk. She catches you looking at her, smiling in response, continuing to talk with Mei. You smile back, then look away before your face reddens. The Shimada brothers sit in silent concentration.

"Coming up on the ship pretty soon," you say to the team. "Let's figure out how to go about this. We'll use the entry plan we discussed, but -- then what?"

"The hostages would probably be in the crew area, right?" says Mercy. "Easier to keep them where you found them, rather than march them off to some other part of the ship."

"Their leader would be in the bridge, where he could command the ship," says Hanzo. "That is, assuming these machine have a leader." He looks questioningly at Mercy.

"I'm no expert, but I'm given to understand there's sometimes a coordinating mind," she says. "In the Uprising incident, we would later find an orchestrating intelligence. It wasn't present during the event itself, only nearby, but -- I suspect here, isolated in the ocean, it must be here."

"They might also have done something to the ship," says Mei. "I'm not sure what kinds of chemicals this thing is shipping, but if it gets out into the ocean, I'm guessing it would be bad. Very bad."

"Perhaps we should disable the engines," suggests Genji. "To prevent them doing anything rash."

You weigh the options, thinking over the angles. "All right, when we hit the deck, here's how we're going to split ..."

Mercy, Mei and Hanzo should take the crew area. Keeping them alive is priority one.

Genji, Tarcer and Seeker should go to the bridge and get control of the ship and take down the leader.

If practical then taking the cargo hold to avoid sabotage of the cargo and avoid polluting the ocean should be done, if it is on the way to the bridge.

"Genji, Hanzo, you're good with heights. Head up to the bridge, see what you find. If the coordinator is up there, take him out. Mei, Mercy, find the hostages and protect them. Tracer and I will hit the cargo hold."

"Understood," Mercy says. The others nod in agreement.

"Tracer, what's our ETA?" you ask.

"Coming right up on it, Seeker," she says. "Be down in a tic." The engines shift for a moment as control shifts over to Athena's pilot function. Tracer leaps down the stairs from the cockpit and strikes a dramatic pose. "Ready!"

Everyone joins you by the exit hatch. Through the window, you can see the lights of the tanker ship, still a long way down. The Orca is almost right above them, but too high and running too quiet for them to notice.

Tracer stretches out her shoulders, then hops from one foot to the other, back and forth. "What do ya wanna do when we get back, Seeker?"

"I was thinking we should watch that movie we were just about to start when Talon attacked us," you say. "The one about UFOs? What was it called?"

""They Came From Beyond The Moon,"" Mercy says.

"Oh, I remember!" she says. "That's right, we all sat down to watch it together, and then red alert! Talon kicked our front door in. Very rude. Now we can actually watch it! Sounds great! Take that, Talon."

"We've got to make it back first, goof," you say. "Stay focused."

"Yes sir," Tracer says in her mock-serious voice, saluting. "Very focused, sir."

"Everyone ready?" you ask, looking around. Everyone assents. Mei looks terrified, but gives you the go-ahead. You hit the button, and the hatch slides open. The interior of the ship is exposed to the air, a strong wind blowing through. Your blood quickens, looking down at the drop to the tanker ship below. You realize you're grinning.

You step out into the darkness.

The air whistles past as you fall. Your helmet protects your face from the worst of it, but the wind batters at the rest of you through your thin armor. Your jacket streams behind you like a banner. Shadowed by the darkness of night, you descend silently, picking up speed.

Twisting to look upwards, you see the team following you, dropping one by one out the Orca's hatch. Tracer is first, a brief glint of blue visible as she blinks downwards, impatient as ever. A shadowy grey shape, Mei in her non-reflective white parka, is next, followed by the faint golden glow of Mercy's wings. The Shimadas barely visible.

You look down again, at the approaching tanker. Boy that is coming up fast. The wind tears at you as you hurtle downwards through the black. Not for the first time, and probably not for the last, you imagine your equipment malfunctioning, and ending up as a red splatter on the deck. An embarassing end to Overwatch's recruit.

Timing it just right, you kick your gravity boots into gear and slowly, gracefully, descend to the ship's main deck. Tracer blinks into place beside you. Mei slows her descent with a sloping ice wall, aided by Mercy, hovering behind her in her Valkyrie suit. Genji and Hanzo appear from over the ship's railing, having used some ninja art to catch themselves on the hull.

"Who needs parachutes?" you say with a grin. "All right, everyone. Let's get to it."

The Shimadas disappear in the direction of the bridge, while Mei and Mercy wave as they set off for the crew quarters.

"So when it says they came from beyond the moon," Tracer says, following you. "Does that mean they came from the other side, or--"

"Lena, let's secure the cargo, then talk about movies, okay?"

The two of you move silently -- more or less -- towards the ship's hold.

You and Tracer head down a flight of utilitarian stairs and into the lower floors of the cargo area. There are several huge tanks of unknown liquid down here, several marked with hazardous warning signs. You were hoping you'd just find a handful of patrolling Null Sector bots down here, but your fears are confirmed when you find explosive devices strapped to some of the hazardous tanks.

"If the ship is breached, and this stuff gets out--" You look up at the big white pill-shaped tanks. "The ocean's biosphere barely recovered from the acid crisis. I doubt this'll help matters any. All right, we've got to start disabling these." You step up to the device, only for a shadow to fall across you. You turn around to see a omnic painted in the black and violet colors of Null Sector, its central eye glowing an ominous red. A small bipedal combat drone stands next to it, like a dog at heel, only with a laser for a face.

"Hi, uh, just here on a random inspection tour. This all seems to be in order." You pat the hazardous container. "Yes, everything's fine here. My fellow inspector and I will just--" You look around for Tracer, only to see her cornered by a second Null Sector bot. "Oh boy."

As the Null Sector bot lowers its gun, you dart forward and drive a small spike into its chest. The spike latches on and begins injecting a stream of malicious code. The bot sparks and jerks as it malfunctions, then clatters as its limbs droop. The small dog-like bot fires a brute force laser from its face, short range but powerful, but you dodge out of the just beforehand, draw your sword, and skewer the bot into the ground.

You look over to see Tracer has drawn her pistols and jammed them underneath the Omnic's chin. She pulls the trigger, emptying rapid-fire pulse munitions into the robot's head. She activates the guns' reload dynamos, then fires another blast into the bot's torso, shredding the armor and wrecking the interior. The bot collapses, deactivated.

Tracer looks at you and grins. You give her a thumbs-up.

"What was that thing?" she asks, moving to stand next to you.

"Codespike," you say. "Rapidly overloads any computer with corrupt data."

"Sounds like it'd come in handy. How many did you bring?"

"One."

"Oh. So that--"

"Was the only one, yes. And they only work once." You sigh, looking down at the expended codespike. "Not easy to get a hold of those. Sure came in handy, though." You listen carefully. It's hard to hear anything over the noise of the ocean and the ship's machinery, so Tracer's gunfire, muffled by the Omnic's proximity, might have gone unnoticed. After a few moments, you still don't hear any alarms or detect any increase in Null Sector comm traffic, so you must be good.

"Found some bombs in the cargo hold," you say quietly over the comms to your teammates. "Starting to disarm them now. What's your status, guys?"

"Enemy presence on the bridge," says Hanzo. "I can't be sure it's this controller. But we are ready to engage."

"We've found the hostages," Mercy says. "There are three Null Troopers guarding them."

"Can you two take them?"

"I think so."

"No time to lose," you say. "Tracer and I will disarm these. If you're in position, then go." You gesture Tracer towards a nearby bomb, and she nods and blinks over to it. You take another nearby, looking over the small metallic box fastened to the side of the chemical tank. "Athena, give us the quick rundown on these?"

"Open it on the right side and cut the red and black wires," Athena says. "Absolutely do not cut the blue wire."

"Gotcha," you say. Your right glove has a small embedded knife in the wrist, which you extend to slice open the bomb case on the right side, and carefully lever it open. Inside are five wires, laid out nice and neatly. One instance where the efficiency of robotic manufacturing works in your favor, you think, slicing the red and black wires while avoiding the blue one. You look over to see Tracer doing the same with an old-fashioned F-S fighting knife, probably a holdover from her days in the British military.

Athena has connected to some of the ship's on-board security cameras. Two small, grainy videos of pop up on the right side of your helmet's HUD.

On the top screen, you can see the bridge, a tall tower surmounting the ship, shadowed figures just visible behind the glass. Genji and Hanzo are nowhere to be seen, but they're ninjas, so that's normal.

On the bottom screen, Mei and Mercy stacked up against an open doorway leading into the ship's galley, where you can see a partial view of the civilian hostages and a Null Trooper standing guard over them.

"On my mark, Miss Zhou," Hanzo says quietly. "Three ... two ... one."

On the top screen, you see a flash of blue in the darkness as Hanzo unleashes his scatter arrow. It pierces the glass surrounding the bridge and, on striking the opposite wall, splits into a cluster of glowing blue projectiles that bounce around the interior. Barely a moment after, Genji reveals himself, hanging just underneath a different window, and strikes his way through the glass. A series of green flashes are visible inside.

"Bridge is clear," reports Genji. "But it was only Troopers and Slicers. No controller."

On the bottom screen, you see Mei hesitate when the order is given. She pushes through her fear and heads through the door, but it takes her a few crucial moments. She and Mercy are too late to get the drop on the Null Troopers, who have been alerted by the sudden disturbance above. Mei's ice gun is shaking as she points it at the Omnic extremists. Mercy stands beside her, steadier, but with less firepower in her pistol. The robots take aim with their energy guns. It's a standoff, with the hostages caught in between.

"In a bit of a situation here, Seeker," Mercy says, trying to keep her voice light.

You look around, trying to assess your own situation. Only about half the bombs are disarmed, and when you hear the approaching sound of clanking feet and see Omnic-shaped shadows moving against the wall, you realize you're about to have company of your own.

You cut the line and say to Tracer, "Heads up. Bots incoming."

"Let's give 'em a warm welcome," Tracer says. She finishes the bomb she's disarming, then swaps out the knife for her pistols.

"Ass right there, freezehole!" shouts Mei, and activates her gun. A vertical chunk of ice immediately springs up directly underneath two of the troopers, smashing them into the ceiling like a car crusher. The two remaining troopers return fire, but they're both blocked off by the ice wall. Mercy and Mei look at each other, nod, and ready their weapons, pointed at the ice wall. The instant it dissolves, they each unload on the bot on their side. One is blasted to smithereens by Mercy's energy pistol; the other falls to the ground, embedded with a dozen sharp icicles larger than knives.

You can't help grinning. Mei still has her struggles, but despite that she's turning out to be a really valuable member of the team. Does she realize what she said, you wonder?
Doesn't matter. You've got a recording of it now.

Refocusing your attention on your own situation, you take out your gunblade and spin it into gun form as you crouch down in position next to Tracer. The two of you look at each other, and an unspoken communication passes between you, despite the helmet masking your face. She grins and nods.

When a formation of Null Sector Troopers arrive, you and Tracer descend on them in a flurry of blinks and dashes. Tracer blasts the Omnics at point-blank with her pistols, zipping in and out of their ranks in bright flashes of blue energy, impossible to pin down, while you stay evasive, switching between sword and gun as needed. One of the Omnics is an Enforcer, a much larger model with a heavier weapon and a energy shield guarding its front, but it turns slowly. With you and Tracer moving unpredictably and flanking it from both sides, it doesn't have a chance to protect itself. When it's weakened, you hit it with a shield-piercing Thunderbolt from your gun, and the lightning arcs between the Enforcer and the last remaining Troopers to fry their circuits and finish them off.

Among the smouldering ruins of the Null Sector omnics, you and Tracer high-five each other. "Yeah!" she shouts, pumping her fist. "Orright, who's next! Bring 'em on!"

"Ideally, the controller," Hanzo says wryly. "We've tracked it down, but preventing its escape is proving rather difficult--"

An explosion from the aft end rocks the deck, pitching the ship under your feet. Athena switches camera feeds, and you see a view of the stern, where Hanzo and Genji are battling against two shielded Enforcers, plus a large hovering Omnic, something like an upside-down pyramid in shape.

"Your assistance would be appreciated," Hanzo continues.

"Mercy is helping the civilians who were wounded in the attack, but I can help," Mei says. "I'm on my way."

You try to think fast. There's still half the bombs to deal with.

Tracer:

"Roger," she says, tossing off a salute, then vanishes in a blur of blue.

You turn your attention to the remaining explosives. You said that, but you have no idea if you can actually disarm these before whatever they're rigged to sets them off. Only one way to find, you think, extending your wrist-knife and hurrying to the nearest bomb.

You get busy dealing with the last of the explosives. Whatever these chemical tanks hold, Mei is right that dumping it into the fragile ecosystem of the ocean is going to be bad. Also, there's the small matter of Overwatch stepping in and doing this job instead of legitimate law enforcement. If anything were to go wrong, and it got pinned on Overwatch, it would look really bad. Which is why, you think, disarming a bomb and heading to the next, you won't let that happen.

On the security camera feed, you see Mei arrive at Hanzo and Genji's position just in time to block a barrage from the Null Sector troops with an ice wall. Tracer zips up shortly afterwards. You hear them quickly discuss a plan, then Tracer and Genji spring into action. They draw the attention of the Enforcer escorts long enough for Hanzo and Mei to take them down from their unshielded sides.

Meanwhile, right as you step up to the last bomb, it starts beeping, and a red light flashes urgently. Fighting a surge of panic, you lever open the device, just like you did for the others. You cut the red wire, then the black one. The beeping stops. You exhale a deep breath you didn't realize you were holding.

You turn your attention back to the cameras, watching Tracer blink back and forth, evading energy cannon fire from the Controller. She keeps it busy long enough for Mei to approach in range of her close-up blaster, unleashing a stream of frost until the Omnic is frozen solid. Its hover jets fail, and it crashes to the ship's deck.

"Nice work, fellas!" Tracer says, approaching the frozen Controller. "What do you think this would--"

Athena cuts in urgently. "Detecting energy surge. Tracer, get back!"

Tracer disappears in a blue flash right before the Controller explodes, blasting a hole in the ship's stern. Mei and the Shimadas take a few hits from debris before they can shield themselves, but aren't caught in the blast wave. Tracer reappears a few moments later, her rewind finished, and wipes sweat from her forehead. "Wew! Close one there."

"It destroyed itself ..." Mei says, sounding surprised, almost sad.

"Either that, or it was triggered remotely," Hanzo says, his voice grim. "Either way, whatever that Mind knew, someone didn't want us to find out."

"I'm afraid there's more," Athena says, bringing up a frequency graph on your helmet. "The Controller used its own death as a catalyst to send a high-powered direct tranmission."

"To who? Or what?" you ask.

"Unknown."

"Great," you mutter, just talking to Athena now. "So whoever was in charge of this little operation has intel on us now."

"I'm afraid so, Seeker."

"All right, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it." Switching back to the group channel, you say, "Great work, guys. Hostages are secure, and the Null Sector terrorists are down. Tracer, Genji, let's do a sweep of the ship to make sure we haven't missed any surprises. We'll meet back at the bow to get picked up by Athena."

The team stands together at the bow, highlighted by a light from the Orca as the aircraft descends through the darkness. A group of the civilian sailors who were taken hostage have come to see you off.

"Thank ye ever so much," the ship's captain says, holding his hat in his hands. "If there's anything we can do ..."

"Law enforcement and the corpnet will probably cover up the official story of what happened here," you say. "Don't get yourselves into hot water trying to fight it. But for anyone who'll listen--"

You glance back at the team gathered behind you, seeing their approval, and turn back to sailors. "Tell them the truth. Overwatch has returned. And we're here to help."

The Orca's hatch opens. Following the team, you climb on board, and close the hatch after you. The aircraft lifts up and away, leaving the tanker ship and its rescued sailors behind.

6:00 AM GMT
Lounge, Watchpoint Gibraltar

The grainy, badly colored footage unrolls on the projector screen. "Who are you?!" demands a masculine-looking scientist with his sleeves rolled up. "Where have you come from?"

The aliens, clearly actors in cheap rubber suits, wave their tentacled arms. "We --come -- from -- beyond -- the -- moon!"

You're sprawled in a chair in the lounge, exhausted but still wired and unable to sleep. The Shimadas have vanished to do whatever it is they do after a mission, ritually purify themselves or something, leaving you to watch They Came From Beyond The Moon with the girls. Tracer has her goggles draped by the band over the corner of her chair, and her forearm holsters on a table nearby. Mercy left her wings and halo behind in the medbay, and pulled off her combat boots to curl up the couch, just wearing the white armor, leggings, and gold-orange skirt. Mei has her parka unzipped and is snoozing on and off in one of the big comfy chairs, using her fur collar as a pillow. It feels good to relax around people you can trust. It's an unusual feeling for you, but once you could get used to.

The manly scientist on screen shakes his fist. "You monsters! Why won't you leave our planet in peace?!"

"Scientists in these movies are so manly," Tracer says, and throws a handful of popcorn into her mouth. She crunches it in a few big bites, swallows, and asks, "Didya see a lot of guys like that at Zurich U, Mercy?"

Mercy sighs. "If only. If more professors looked like Jack Stirling, I might never have left. What about you, Mei?"

"At XJTU? Please. Nothing but spoiled rich boys."

More of the badly costumed aliens are now pursuing a housewife, whose general incompetency seems to be ramping up as the movie goes on. "Heeelp!" she shrieks, failing to lock doors or generally do anything to succesfully impede the aliens' path.

"Did you ever go to a university or whatever, Seeker?" asks Tracer, and giggles. "Did you meet any cute boys?"

"I was too busy with cute girls," you say. "So I went to the school of hard knocks, instead. I learned things on the streets, in the real world, baby. None of your fancy book learnin'." Tracer turns around to give you a mocking frown, and you wink at her in response. "No, uh -- there were plans for my education, but, well, things happened. It didn't work out."

"What happened?" asks Tracer blithely. Mercy shushes her, and Tracer realizes too late she's stepped into sensitive ground. "Oh, err--"

"No, it's okay." You run a hand through your hair, still sweaty after the mission, and, briefly, consider lying. In the end, you tell the truth. "I ran away from home, about a year before I was supposed to graduate intermediate education. I was seventeen. That's when I started, you know." You're still wearing most of your gear, minus your helmet, which you left on the nearby table. You pick it up and look at it: your other face, viewed from the outside. You think about the years since you first put it on. "All this. Running about in a mask, getting shot at."

You look back at Tracer and Mercy and grin. "It's been a wild ride since then, but, I'm glad I did. Otherwise I wouldn't be here now, right?"

They smile back, and the three of you share a quiet moment of understanding.

Mei starts to snore, which kind of ruins the moment, but is cute in its own way.

"Should we get her to the dorm?" Tracer asks.

"Let her rest," Mercy says. "She looks quite comfortable." She does, at that, snuggled up in her parka.

On screen, the movie continues to play. Outside, the sky slowly begins to brighten from the light of dawn.

After what seems like barely any sleep at all, you pull yourself out of bed, get some coffee in you, and start your day. You supervise one of the initial assessments for Durant's security troopers, and check in with Maeve about her progress decoding the Project Fulgurite information.

Early afternoon finds you in the newly constructed situation room, built and expanded from the empty room next to the briefing room and across the road from Mercy's medbay. In here you can keep track of what's going on throughout the world, and what kinds of activity your enemies have been up to. You called together some of the core members of the team, both for them to check out the new room, and to discuss a few topics that have been on your mind:

"First, let's talk about our friends in Talon."

Everyone here -- Winston, Reinhardt, Mercy, Tracer, and McCree -- was a veteran of the old team, and outside of the equanimous Mercy, they bristle at the name. Talon was their persistant adversary over many years, and the first Overwatch suffered many setbacks against them. Perhaps the most wounding of all being the murder of Gerard Lacroix at the hands of his own wife, the woman who would later become the assassin Widowmaker. The criminal network was once driven into hiding, but ever since the disbandment, without their rivals to contain them and newly allied with the mysterious Reaper, they've returned to become a powerful force creating chaos throughout the world.

"So far, we've pretty much proven we can kick their ass in a direct fight," you say, bringing up markers of your previous encounters with them -- Hanamura, London, Mumbai, and two base defenses. "But I still get the feeling like they're one step ahead of us."

McCree says, "They were waitin' for us to make a move before they hit Mumbai. We showed up with only half a team, got only half the mission done. Whatever it was they went to Vishkar for, they got it." He sighs and pulls his hat a little lower. "Sorry about that, fellas. If was a little quicker on the draw in there--"

Tracer pats him on the back. "None of us are perfect, love. We'll get 'em next time."

"We'll just have to adapt," you say. "Athena has some pretty good intelligence gathering programs at her disposal now, but we'll need more if we want to stay ahead of Talon. We'll also need to be fast and mobile, and be ready for tricks or fake-outs."

The others seem to agree as they look over the map. Reinhardt scowls. "Cowards. If only we could find a base of operations, we could take ze fight to them."

"That's a good point, Reinhardt," Mercy says. "We'll have to hit them at home eventually to stop them. And the fewer fights that take place among civilians, the better."

Winston muses, "We may have to locate a new source of intelligence. Perhaps, Seeker -- er --" he coughs. Nobody wants to mention your criminal background, but there it is.

"I'll see what I can do," you say. "Athena said something about connecting to the Talon comm network as well. Something about taking an officer hostage, was it, Athena?"

"Correct, Seeker," she says. "If you or someone else equipped with a data link can access the port of a live Talon field commander, I believe I can gain information on their network."

"All right, so those are our priorities for Talon," you say. "One, stay ready to react to whatever tricky shit they try to pull. Two, track down their bases. Maybe through linking up with a field officer like Athena says, maybe some other way. However we find one, when we do, we hit it hard."

>I think we're doing okay so far against these guys.

"I don't know, guys," you say, looking down at the map. "I think we need to do better. Whatever their goal is, they're getting closer all the time, and we still don't even know what it is. We'll have to step up our intelligence game."

The mood is somber as you clear the map.

"Second, we've got Anubis fragments on the loose. I think Athena's the only one who actually understands this, but when he breached containment in his Temple a few months ago, he was somehow able to get thousands of little bits and pieces of himself out into the world, both on the corpnet and the darkweb. They could be in corporate servers, household toasters, Mongolian pottery boards, anywhere. And these fragments have instructions to make more of themselves, track each other down, and recombine. If enough of them get together over time, eventually a complete copy of Anubis will have formed outside of his prison. Either that, or the incomplete copy just needs enough intelligence to break the original free."

Athena shows an abstract overlay of the world internet across the globe, representing Anubis fragments as a red virus-like glow that creeps through the blue of the net.

"What's your latest guess on this, Athena?"

"I estimate defragmentation progress at 47%," she says. "53% remaining until completion."

"That's okay, but still higher than I was hoping," you say. "Have you tracked down any fragments we might be able to physically destroy?"

"I am narrowing down the locations of two at this time," Athena say. "I hope to have a definite answer soon."

"All right, so that's another thing for us to hit with maximum prejudice when we find it. Or uh, depending on who or what's there, ask politely if we can maybe take a look at their computer for evil AIs bent on destroying humanity.

"The fragments have also shown that they're capable of converting combat Omnics to their cause, so we'll need to be ready to fight them. Anyone with heavy or armor-piercing weapons, like our friend Mr. Wilhelm here, will be invaluable."

"My battle against the Omnics continues," Reinhardt says. "I will never tire. I will protect humanity to my last breath."

"We're with ya, old timer," McCree says.

Tracer scratches her head, looking at the map. "We can't just fight his copies forever, right? Isn't there some way we can -- y'know -- flush him out? Get rid of him? "

"Some sort of adaptable anti-virus software could in theory do this," Athena says. "Yet it would have to be extremely advanced. Beyond my own capabilities."

"So we still have no idea how to deal with this permanently?" asks Mercy.

"Unfortunately, yes. For now."

"I wasn't around for this," you say. "But, in the Crisis, after the first team and the world armies won the war and all -- how were the Godminds actually imprisoned?"

The team looks at each other. No-one seems to know, exactly. "I believe it was a special team from U.N. assignment," says Mercy. "They dealt mostly with Jack and Ana. I'm not sure the rest of us were involved in any way."

"The war was over," says McCree. "We all just wanted a little R&R. Let the U.N. whiz kids take care of locking the big bastards up. We were on the same side, back then. That turned around pretty fast. Funny how ending a war does that to people."

"We need to find a way to shut this copy shit down, long-term," you say. "Someone in this world has to know enough about computers and AI to stop this. We just need to find them."

You think about asking the team why it the Godminds were imprisoned and not destroyed. But you have a feeling you already know the answer.

Some asshole in the U.N. thought they'd be useful. Maybe he genuinely believed that humanity could learn something from them in captivity. Or maybe he just wanted to weaponize them against someone he didn't like. Either way, he kept them around, and now the world is paying the price.

Speaking of which -- "Third item is the war," you say. "The one everyone outside of Asia tries to pretend isn't happening."

You bring up Athena's latest data on army movements. Small colored soldiers, each representing thousands of troops, appear across eastern Asia. The battle line is drawn from the Central Siberian Plateau, down into Mongolia, southeast through Manchuria, and finally into the bombed-out ruins of the defunct North Korean state. Red troops represents the Russian Army, gold the Chinese, and blue the Koreans. Together they contain the black armies of the Siberian Godmind -- Czernobog, the Black God -- but just barely.

"Russia gets pushed back further every day," you say. "Freeing up more Omnic troops to shore up the offensive on the southern front. Korea was making progress for a while, but with those reinforcements, they're being hit hard. The bots are making a big push in the past few days. Soon they'll be at the South Korean border, and before that, within striking distance of Seoul."

The group stares at the map, at a loss for words. Isolated uprisings and criminal acts are one thing, but this? An actual war, against the endless armies of an true Omnium, commanded by a Godmind? What can Overwatch do against this?

"Maybe it's time to take a page from the first team's book. Deal with this the same way they did with the first Crisis. Kill teams on high-value targets, command units and control structures." You look around at the others. "Would that be stupid to do now?"

A few of them shift uncomfortably. "The first team was coordinated with the Coalition Army," Mercy says. "When we struck a target, they were ready to move in behind us, exploiting the gap we created. Without such a relationship, without force backing us -- I'm afraid such gains would be temporary."

"All right, but it still might buy time to take some pressure off, right?"

She shrugs. "Perhaps, yes. We're spread thin already dealing with Talon and Anubis, but -- of course you know this already. And you're right that we can't merely stand by. I'm just not certain of the right course."

Tracer says, "Any chance we can get help from the Japanese or the Yanks?"

McCree shakes his head. "From what the Shimada boys tell me, Japan is pretty closed off these days. They don't give two shakes about anything that happens outside their islands. As for the Free States, well -- it ain't no place that can support an army anymore. Ever since the Crisis, everything in between Texas and Canada, from one coast to the other, is or has been a war zone. One President after another claimin' the succession from the old days, settin' up his own little petty state, tearin' down their neighbors and gettin' torn down in kind. You won't get anythin' from them. Too busy fightin' each other."

"We'll figure something out," you say. "Right now I'm not sure we have the resources, but popular support is racking up. The big wigs don't want to admit it, but Overwatch is back, and the people are realizing it. Maybe helping the war effort is what we need to give us some legitimacy, and bring world attention to the conflict as well. There's also the possibility of forging some kind of agreement with one of the public figures involved in the war -- the Korean war streamer D.Va, or that Olympic weightlifter who joined the Russian army. What was her name? The one with pink hair?"

"Aleksandra Zaryanova," McCree says, pronouncing it well. A little too well, in fact. Everyone looks at him, and his face turns red. "I used to watch the Olympics, all right? It ain't anything weird. What are y'all looking at me for?"

You say, "Anyway, we'll try to get a plan together for dealing some kind of strike to hamper the Omnic war effort. While also trying to figure out how to shut down the Anubis copies. And searching for intel on Talon facilities. Okay. Have I missed anything?"

Silence as everyone looks down at the map. The weight of the enormous tasks ahead, the immense responsibilities weighing on Overwatch's shoulders, seems to press down on you. Everyone in the room, you would guess, feels the same.

"All right, we're done here," you say. "Let's go cheer ourselves up. Anyone for a round of pool?"

"Yer on, kiddo," McCree says. "I'll meet you in the lounge in a few."

The other agents begin to file out. You go to follow, but stop when Mercy tugs at your sleeve. You wait for everyone to leave, then ask, "What is it, Doc?"

"Feeling great," you say lightly. "Never better." You even mean it -- partly, at least. You're finally making a difference in the world like you always wanted to, in a position to do something about the people in danger from criminals and killers. That, and the excitement of these operations is incredible. Ever since you started this crazy life at 17, you've become a bit of a thrill junkie. And Overwatch gets you that, in a big way. In some weird way, you're really genuinely happy for what might be the first time in your life.

Of course -- a tiny part of you acknowledges that Mercy has a point. You're getting beaten up on the regular, not getting a lot of rest, and you're not slowing down. Your back still aches from literally being struck by a volcanic blast, your left hand doesn't move properly yet after getting almost ripped off by a robotic hound, and your stomach still hurts from where that heavy security droid blasted you, back in Vishkar R1 in Rio.

You can't let any of this slow you down, though. You don't have time.

Mercy doesn't seem convinced. You rest a hand on her shoulder, giving her one of your "trust me" smiles. "I'll be fine, Angela. Really."

She still doesn't look entirely satisfied, but says, "All right, I'll accept that for now. But you know -- you might fool the team, but It's clear to me you're in some residual pain. Please come and see me at your discretion, if you think I can help." She hesitates, as though she's about to say something else, then changes her mind. "I'd better get back to the medbay. I'll see you later, Logan."

"You too, Doc." You watch her leave, grateful for her concern.

July 31, 3:00 AM GMT
Dormitory

You awake from a confused dream in which Mercy and Widowmaker were competing on the same game show for something. It takes you a second to remember where the hell you are and what's happening -- Athena's amber alert ping is waking you up. "Athena, what's the deal?"

Athena switches on the small viewing screen in your dorm room, displaying the corpnet news. The video shows a Korean newscaster speaking urgently. The picture behind him is unclear. When it switches to full-screen, you suddenly realize what you're looking at. A vast metallic shape rising from the waters.

"Oh, shit."

The Korean Titan has returned.

No-one has found where it comes from or returns to. No-one knows who built it. No-one can tell what it wants, or understand the unpredictable schedule it follows.

All they know is this: A Titan-class mech, one of the largest mobile machines ever created by mankind, rises from the Pacific Ocean to attack Korea, destroying civilian and military property alike, then retreats beneath the waves. It attacks at intervals of as short as three months, and as long as two years. It can somehow adapt its weapons and armor to the tactics employed against it. And no weapon the Korean army possesses can destroy it.

The Korean MEKA forces have driven it off, the previous two times it attacked. But most of the MEKAs are engaged in north of the country, in a desperate defence against Czernobog's push south. Athena replaces the news screen with her army report from earlier, and you see the almost complete lack of garrison forces available to fight the Titan assault.

"They're not going to be able to push it back this time," you say, realizing the truth of it as you say it.

"Perhaps we can be of assistance," Athena says.

You briefly consider the alternatives, but there's no choice about it, really. If there's anything you and the team can do to to stop Busan from being stomped into oblivion, you have to try. "All right. Let's do it." You think about your first encounter with a Titan mech, and how Torbjorn was able to disable it from the inside. He designed the damn things, after all. "Is Torbjorn available yet?"

"I am afraid Mercy has not cleared him for mission status," Athena says. "His wounds from your excursion to the Avalon Archive were severe."

"Right," you say, remembering. You left Torbjorn to fight that mech alone, so you could go chasing after -- whoever the hell that was. That weird female version of you. When you got back, he had beaten the mech, but was barely alive, his blood splattered across the sterile metal walls. Mercy kept him alive, but he'll probably be some time before he returns to full active status.

Having Torbjorn along last time made things easy. This time, you're going to have to fight a Titan without him. The old-fashioned way.

Also, Mr. Roboto needs a break. And I don't think SK is gonna be too happy about seeing what looks like another Omnic there to deal with.

REMINDER, IDEAL TEAM COMP IS:

No security, they do nothing the SK government can't do and have no real use right now more justifiable than being defense bois.

Nice defense. You have meticulously, methodically destroyed everything I could even begin to use as an argument. I bow to your superior debate skills.

Winston has tech skills that'll be useful inside the mech, Reinhardt may not even be able to swing his hammer in the mech, or even get inside. The SK forces can deal with minions, Reinhardt doesn't need to be there for that. It's a really simple choice.
>>
>>1927895
I chose Rein because his shield can be used to protect civilians still in the area. Winston’s shield isn’t big enough and the guy is as big as Rein so even if he went inside the omnic he’d just become one big blockade/target.
So once again no
>>
>>1927918
Except Winston's shield is hardly any smaller and is good from 360 instead of just one direction. Also Winston isn't talking around on his legs, he can crouch. Also he is able to move around and still do tech shit that nobody else can do on the team.

>>

Reinghard's hammer if useless on long ranges unless he gets close to something that could squash him like a bug.
>>1927933
Yeah, that's right.
>>
>>1927895
If you want to debate then Rien likes/is good at/has more experience fighting and Winston is more scientist based less smasher
>>
>>1927938
Do you honestly think this giant titan Omnic is gonna be on his own? Also missiles can zoom around for any direction.
>>
>>1927944
And inside the mech he might not even be able to attack. Winston can at least place shields like Rein and zap things. Also that science knowledge is exactly why we would want him around.
>>
>>1927944
Which is useless, considering we're going for the Titan, not the minions, and Rein is useless against the Titan. It'd just be someone we leave outside. Winston, however, has the tech skills to disable the Titan quickly.

>>1927938
>we're only fighting one Titan
Honestly, if we're trying to stop shots from a MASSIVE TITAN THAT THE ENTIRE SOUTH KOREA MILITARY CAN'T DESTROY with a shield then something's gone drastically wrong. The shield is going to be more of a minions thing. And in a warzone, you can't really predict which way to face a shield to not get hit. 360 shield would be more useful imo

I think deploying Bastion is worth doing. He has some heavy firepower backing up and can help provide cover for Mei, or simply escaping civilians. Yes, the Kpreans might not like him being there, but they'd probably like being bullet riddled corpses even less.
>>
>>1928305
The point isn't that they won't like him being there, the point is that they'll go 'oh shit, omnic, kill it' and then blast our poor robro.

This. Also remember that the Korean Omnic has hacking capabilites. Even IF the Koreans didn't blast our robotic friend to scrap on sight they will when Bastion gets hacked.

They have to be aware that peaceful Omnics exist too. We would just need to explain to them that Bastion isn't a threat.

Better idea: leave bastion at home where he can defend the base and don't have the problem. It's better for the both of us.

"Are ye sure about this?" asks Maeve.

"No," you say. "Show me anyway."

The scientist taps a few controls on her datapad, and the blast shield slides open, revealing the transparent plasteel of the holding chamber. Inside is the weapon you retrieved from the Avalon Vault. A gun, made of dark metal and fashioned with boxy, utilitarian construction. Vent channels reveal a faintly glowing light within. The thing is almost too big for a person to even carry.

"I haven't had the time fer proper testing," Mave says. Her Irish accent seems to become more pronounced when she's stressed. "But I believe it uses an antimatter catalyst to emit a focused stream of positrons. The energy output seems to be quite extraordinary. If you want something to take down that Titan -- well --" She gestures towards the weapon. "That'll certainly do more damage than yer sword. There's a problem, though."

"What is it?"

"Power supply. It appears to rely on an external source, which we don't have. I think you could fire it if you, say, plugged it into the Busan electrical grid and drained half the city." Maeve clears her throat. "And of course, It just so happens that this old base has plenty of high-capacity wires lying around. So you could do that. Hypothetically speaking, of course."

"Of course," you say. The weapon lies there, inanimate, but you can't help but feel a sense of contained power from it. "Would this be safe to use in a populated area?"

"As long as you point it in the right direction."

You sigh and scratch your head, still staring at the weapon. "What do you think I should do?" you ask Maeve.

She laughs, not unkindly. "Don't be trying to put this on me, boy. I didn't sign up for that when ye plucked me out of Hyde tower. My best guess is that it'll work, but I also think yer a fool for even thinking of using it without proper testing first. I can't say whether or not ye should use it." She shakes her head. "Still, there's those people to think of. It's a tough one, though, and no mistake."

Your radio crackles, and Mercy's voice comes online. "We're ready, Seeker."

Okay, so you have to choose whether or not to bring a barely-understood superweapon with you to use against a giant unbeatable mech with adaptive defenses, rampaging through a densely populated city, with only a skeleton crew from the ROK army to defend against it.

In the end, you told Maeve to seal the weapon back up, and walked out of the laboratory empty-handed. Using the weapon was tempting. An easy shortcut to defeating the Titan. But the consequences of showing the world that Overwatch held some kind of Golden Age superweapon could be a disaster.

You just hope you don't come to regret that decision later.

The Orca approaches Busan over the waters of the Korea Strait. Even from here, you can see the rising smoke from the destruction, and the flashes of light and fire from explosions. The Titan has already reached the city.

As you get closer, you can see the smashed shoreline fortifications, artillery barrels sitting ruined and silent. A path of devastation leads inwards, deeper into the city.

Through the smoke and chaos, you catch sight of the vast hulk of the Titan. Even as you watch, a trio of Korean fighter jets streaks past overhead and unloads a missile barrage, but when the explosions clear, they've done little but singe the Titan's armor plating.

The mech responds with machine gun fire from turrets surmounting its shoulders and arms. One of the fighters explodes, and another starts falling as one of its wings is consumed by flame.

"Don't they have drone fleets to back up the manned fighters?" You ask Winston.

The gorilla adjusts his glasses. "The Titan emits some sort of field, an electronic countermeasure. It scrambles any automated targeting or remote controls inside a large radius. Machine intelligence has difficulty as well. So essentially, everything has to be controlled manually."

"So, what about Athena?"

"She can communicate with us, but there's no autopilot function for the Orca, remote hacking, or anything or that sort."

You stare out the window at the Titan and the path of destruction as it rampages through the city.

"Any thoughts on how to take this thing down?" you ask the team.

The team glances at each other, then back to you. "You and Torbjorn were the ones who took down the Titan in Kurjikstan," Mercy says.

"Yeah, because Torb designed it, and he shepherded me through. This one's adapted, rebuilt itself over the years. He says he has no idea what we'll find inside. We've still got him ready on comms if there's something he can help with, but -- there's no way around it. This won't be as easy as last time. We'll think of something, though." You take another look out the window at the huge machine that you've somehow got to take down, then head up to the cockpit.

Tracer asks, "What's the plan, Seeker?"

"Bring us overhead," you say.

"Bring what?" asks Tracer. "You're not planning to drop on it, are you? Y'know, people say my plans are reckless, but you're really something."

"I figure we'll have to climb up eventually, right? Why not start at the top? I'll take Winston, Mercy and Hanzo, and leave you McCree. Jumping around isn't really his thing. Land the Orca someplace it won't get stepped on or shot by a tank, and then join us as soon as you can. Try to avoid any awkward encounters with the army. First, though, fly right over him, as close as you can get without being chewed up by those guns."

"Orright, if you say so," Tracer says, pulling the Orca around.

Your pulse quickens as you look at the massive form of the rampaging Titan, dead ahead. Its shoulder-mounted artillery cannons fire off another round, and explosions bloom far off in the city. Rain falls from the sky, visible in the searchlight beams of the Korean army.

"I"ll see you soon, yeah?" Tracer says, worry in her voice.

"I'll be fine," you say. Before you leave the cockpit, you give in to temptation and ruffle Tracer's disheveled spikes.

She swats your hand away, grinning. "Go on, get outta here. Don't hog all the fun before I get there."

You head down to the hold. "All right, guys. No sense taking the long way around on this one. We're dropping straight on top of the bastard, and finding -- or making -- a way in. McCree, stay with the ship. You and Tracer will do what you can from the bottom after landing."

"Gotcha." McCree touches the brim of his hat. "Good luck out there, fellas."

"The rest of you are with me. Winston?"

"Ready," the gorilla says. He steps to the front of the group at the hatch. You, Mercy and Hanzo form up behind him.

You take a deep breath, trying to push other thoughts out of your mind. Especially the one where you get hit by a random anti-air shell and explode into a thousand pieces over Busan.

"Everyone stay close together," you say. "We all have to do this at once."

The red light switches to green. Winston hits the button, and the hatch slides open. A blistering wind howls past. Below you is the Titan, illuminated in the bright glare of searchlights and the red glow of flame. Summoning his courage, Winston steps out into the darkness. In concert, everyone steps out behind him.

The group falls away from the ship into the blackness. Machine gun fire tracks in your direction, but a spherical barrier of energy springs into existence. Bullets strike the field, revealing the tesselated hexagon pattern, then fall away. Winston clings tight to his barrier projector, and you and the others huddle within its protection. An anti-aircraft turret tracks in your direction, flak detonating all around you but spending itself against the shield.

Then a sudden blast of roaring fire bursts through the shield. A direct hit. The shield still nullifies the blast, mostly, but the concussive wave sends everyone tumbling. The world spins, and you see the dark rainswept sky one moment, and the spotlight-illuminated Titan the next.

Just in time, you manage to get yourself upright and turn your boots on. You slow yourself enough to prevent injury, but on impact you loose your footing. Skidding down the metal surface of the Titan, you desperately reach for a handhold, anything, and for several stomach-lurching moments find nothing until your hand snags an extruding strut. Stopping yourself almost yanks your arm off, and you grimace in pain, thankful for the muscle support provided from your armor.

You hang there in midair, suspended by one arm fifty feet above the broken street, halfway up the gigantic Titan mech blasting a hole through the Korean military and Busan, and you have one of those moments where you think about your life choices.

"Seeker!" Winston's voice comes in urgently. "Are you all right?"

"Just peachy," you say. You crane your neck to look upwards, and note the total absence of anything between you and the top of the mech that could be climbed. "Keep going, guys. Try to find some way inside, and something to blow up. I'll figure something out down here."

You could maybe get back up there if you pulled off some fancy footwork with your grav boots. Maybe. You twist around, looking for some way closer by you might get inside. There's a big vent nearby that could maybe work. Maybe. Or you could drop down using your grav boots to protect you from the fall, and regroup with Tracer and McCree. Last time you dealt with a Titan, you went in through a service door at ground level, and maybe this Titan still has one. Maybe.

None of these options are especially appealing to you. Maybe you'll just hang here for a while and see what happens. Yeah, that sounds good.

You have to try and get up there to help the team. Triggering Mercy's core in your boots, you feel the rush as your ethereal wings manifest, and you boost yourself upwards. It only gets you so far, though. You plant your boots on the side of the mech, gaining a few extra steps from your wallrun, but the charge quickly runs out. You grasp at the smooth sides of the mech, desperate to somehow find a purchase, but get nothing. Gravity takes hold once more, and you fall backwards, this time just out of reach of the strut you grabbed before.

It was worth a try, you think as you plummet towards the earth, watching the ground get closer at an all-too-rapid pace.

At the last moment, the charge in your boots returns, and you're able to slow your descent into a landing that's merely painful rather than debilitating. The Titan's massive foot lands near you and knocks you off your feet, and you scramble away, out of the street and into some kind of plaza.

You need to at least clear your head before tackling this thing again. You take a moment to catch your breath, massaging your sore knees, then activate your comm. "Not sure I'll be joining you anytime soon, guys. What's your status up there?"

"We're all right," Mercy says. "We got knocked about a bit, but Winston's shield protected us from most of the blast wave. We've found something that might be an old access hatch, but it's locked tight. Winston is doing his best to open it now."

"All right, keep trying," you say. "Once you get inside, look for a reactor or a control system, something you can take out to bring this thing down."

You're about to start jogging after the Titan, when in between earth-shaking footsteps and shell detonations, you hear something strange. Is that -- music?

Something barrels through the sky trailing twin streams of green fire, heading straight for the Titan. You zoom in on your helmet's view to see a bright pink MEKA splashed with sponsorship stickers. Jury-rigged speakers thump as they blast a bass beat across the battlefield. You can't see the pilot inside, but you'd recognize that pink mech anywhere.

Machine gun fire from the Titan's turrets tracks towards the compact flying mech, but a web of bright green lances out, a matrix of defensive lasers that shoot down the vast majority of bullets before they hit. Cracks spiderweb across the pilot shield, but the craft flies on regardless.

The MEKA darts and weaves past the Titan's defenses, at one point throwing itself into a spiral maneuver that you think must surely black out a human pilot, but it rights itself and continues on. It closes to point-blank range and unloads a strafing barrage from the fusion cannons across the Titan's left shoulder weapon battery.

The short-range countermeasures engage, but the pink mech avoids them and loops around for a second run. This time the huge anti-aircraft turret detonates in a fiery explosion that rocks the Titan, staggering it in the opposite direction. Flame brightens the smoke-blackened buildings around you, and the shockwave reaches you on the ground, blowing your jacket out behind you.

Twisting around for a third run, the MEKA dives in at the Titan from above. The gigantic Omnic fires off another series of explosive countermeasures. This time they hit their mark, an explosion blasting the side of the small pink mech.

Engines sputtering, only one boost rocket firing, it begins to fall, picking up speed as it plunges toward the ground in a wobbling death spiral. You realize, almost too late, that it's heading in your direction, and dive for cover.

The MEKA crash-lands in the plaza with an impact that leaves a crater in the concrete. The machine is ruined, shattered, barely intact. Green fire still spurts fitfully out of one booster. The speaker system begins to fall apart, and the music slows, distorts, and then stops.

You cautiously approach the wreck, but before you get close, the cracked pilot shield dents, deforms, and then flies outward, kicked away by the craft's occupant.

A girlish figure clad in a blue and white plugsuit crawls out of the downed mech. She picks herself up, dusts herself off, says "Hmph!", and steps away from the mech, only moments it explodes in a massive fireball. The girl's long brown hair is tossed by the shockwave, but she remains undisturbed.

"You ..." is all you can say, flabbergasted.

"That's right!" she says, and strikes a pose. "It's me, D.Va!" She pauses, drops her hands, and looks you up and down. "So just who the hell are you?"

"Name's Seeker," you say, raising a hand to your hood in a casual salute. "Pleased to meet you."

"Okay, "Seeker", what the hell are you doing here, and what kind of getup is that? Does the 707 Battalion have an anti-Titan unit I don't know about?"

You're about to explain why you're here, when you're interrupted by appearance of a squad of Korean infantry. Travelling with them are a military officer and some kind of official in a suit. They approach D.Va, and the officer barks at her in rapid-fire Korean, which you're pretty rusty on. Whatever he's saying, he's not happy about it. The suit adds something in a wheedling voice. D.Va talks back to them defiantly.

Your helmet's translator program is struggling to keep up. "What's the problem?" you ask.

"They don't want me to fight," D.Va says angrily. "The only reason I'm here is because they're keeping me off the front lines on purpose. They think I'm more useful to them as a prop for their PR shit. Selling the war to the people."

She adopts a mocking voice. ""Oh, if something happened to our precious Hana Song, whose face would we put on our posters? How would we sell a million promotional keychains to fund my next swimming pool? What will happen to all our gross fanboys drooling over the idol gamer girl?" Well, I've had it!" She stabs her finger at them. "No more photo shoots. No more movies. No more rich guy asshole fundraiser gala fuckfests. No more bullshit! This city is my home! I'm going to fight, and I'm going to protect the people here, and that's it!"

D.Va turns from the group in a huff. The officer gives a command. The soldiers surround her, and close in, forming a wall around her that blocks her from moving. They don't attack, but they don't let her through, either. She shouts vulgarities at the soldiers in Korean as she shoves at them, to no avail.

These are the kind of assholes you hate. People who'll do anything to preserve the order of things so they can continue to line their own pockets, even as their city burns. You step forward. "Hey. In case you didn't notice, she's got a battle to fight."

A couple of the soldiers look at you, disinterested. You draw your weapon, and that gets their attention, but it's too late for them. You spin the gunblade into sword form and dart in.

Part of you gets that they're just soldiers, humans doing their duty, and are ultimately on the same side as you against the robots. So you just use the flat of your blade, and some well-aimed kidney punches. D.Va takes care of one herself, wrenching control away of his rifle and slamming the stock into his chin. In a few seconds, all the soldiers are on the ground groaning with bruises or broken wrists. The officer and suit stand nearby, too stunned to react.

"gg no re," D.Va says to the downed soldiers. She looks at you, gives you a wink and a hair flip, and walks off.

You follow after her. "So what now? Your mech's trashed."

"There's a calldown satellite within range," she says, taking out a remote. She punches in a series of coordinates, then looks up. "Just got to wait it out a couple minutes. Hope those assholes don't show up with a new set of soldiers." She folds her arms, her eyebrows lowered in anger. "Fucking pricks," she hisses. After a few moments, her expression softens as she looks up at you. "Hey, um. Thanks for your help."

"You're welcome."

"You didn't answer my question earlier. What are you here for?"

"I'm here to fight the Titan. Same as you."

D.Va blows a pink bubble of gum, pops it, and chews for a few moments before asking, "So what are you? Helix? Lucheng? Government? Or are you some kind of freelance superhero vigilante wannabe?"

"Well ..."

"Oh my god," she says. She tries to stop herself from laughing, putting a hand to her mouth. "You really are. Unbelieveable."

"It's not that hard to believe, is it?" you say, annoyed. "I just beat up, like, six guys. I'm not just some wannabe. I'm the real deal."

"Okay, sure, Mister Seeker," D.Va says, still laughing. You start to feel flustered. Dammit. Behind the safety of the stream, it's easy to bully her. Now the tables are turned and you're just an awkward shut-in kid again, trying to deal with a beautiful international celebrity and movie star.

"Look," you say, trying to refocus. "I want to stop that Titan, same as you. The army clearly can't put a scratch in that thing. Its armor is too well adapted. The only way to stop it is from the inside. And to do that -- well -- I could use your help."

"Hmmm." D.Va thinks it over, tapping her chin with one finger. "I do owe you for beating those guys up. All right. It's a deal." She thrusts out a small hand, and you take it and shake hands with her. It would feel like a big event, meeting your favorite streamer, but you're already regularly spending time with the people you had posters and comics of as a teenager, so this is practically normal.

Something big hurtles out of the sky, and you duck back instinctively, but D.Va doesn't move an inch. A bright pink replacement MEKA slams into the ground, just a few meters away.

"What did you have in mind?" D.Va asks, as though a combat machine fired out of a cannon from above the stratosphere hadn't just crashed to the ground at high speed right next to her.

Recovering from the shock of the impact, you stand up, straighten out your jacket, and explain your idea to D.Va. She isn't too thrilled about it, at first. But in the end she agrees. Together with your new ally, you prepare to renew your assault on the Titan.

>>
>>1930659
This open a new way of bullying her.
>>
>>1930659
It's more that she's tired of being held up on a pedastal as Korea's PR figure when she's actually a legitimate ace pilot. She's mad at the Korean army and suits refusing to let her really fight.
>>
>>1930683
Well, we have a new tank, but not a new income stream.
>>

Sure, that doesn't really change how she nonchalantly (and presumably accurately) characterised substantial portion of nerds that watch her stream though. That line might have hurt Seeker a little bit.

D.va actually is really good at her job, given the opportunity. For those who don't know, her Defense Matrix ability isn't some automated system that absorbs enemy projectiles; it's actually Hana getting intensely focused and manually shooting down every individual projectile in her cone. She's just that nuts.
>>
>>1930696
Athena could probably help with that. Or we gonna have to steal a shipment of MEKA then launch our own satellite with the drop pods.

A thought: since that archaeo-tech gun is so damn powerful, we oughta name it something suitable so we don't have to outright say what the fuck it is everytime we want to mention it.

My vote is to call it Ea, after this asshole's trump card and OP bullshittium weapon
