After the resounding triumph of your defeat of the Legion ships around the stronghold of the Order of Tyr's Star, the next three weeks are somewhat... boring. That's not to say they're not interesting, or vital, of course. The Legion managed to trash almost every single piece of orbital infrastructure in the process of assaulting it, and despite the valiant efforts of its defenders. You can't really grudge the need to defend Grand Master Zylon while he transports as much ground-based construction as possible into orbit in preparation for transporting it to a new stronghold.

The wait also gives you time to fill Zylon in on the war so far, and give him as much intel on the Legion as you can. In return, he tells you of the happenings within his own mission sector. They didn't have much warning, it turns out. Less than a month ago was the first sightings of Legion ships, and he's heard nothing from his Knight-Brothers (who he refers to as 'Paladins' for some reason), but seven of them perished trying to defend the stronghold. The rest of his Order arrive while you maintain your virgil- twelve 'Paladins', all with stories of the same, of being overrun and their comrades' sacrifices. Zylon sent the Paladin with the least-damaged body with some of your escorts back to the Chapterhouse to warn the rest of your own Order, and to request material assistance, and especially missile construction lines. Ships of the Order of Tyr's Star rely heavily on laser and grasers, which is why the Legion was able to hurt them so badly.

"Just give us six months, and we'll come back stronger than before." He assures you, as the battered remains of your brother Order assemble the convoy. As they begin their transit towards the jump point, you say a prayer and turn your own attention to your star charts. Zylon gave you full blueprints to his missile pod, which you should probably get back to the Chapterhouse and Flavius' tender ministrations as soon as possible, but you could also take the opportunity to hunt some Legion ships, if you can find them, on the way home.

>Be a good boy

With a final examination of the wrecked husk of the stronghold, stripped of anything useful and left to dust, you light off your drive and plot a course towards the jump point home.

Your journey is long, but uneventful, and the week-long transit gives you time to think, if nothing else. You see hide nor hair of any Legion forces, so it seems that your knocking out of that refueling base has temporarily stumped their efforts to expand into the region. When you arrive at the jump point of the Chapterhouse itself, you're lit up brighter by radar and targeting lidar than if you were standing next to a sun, but after a nerve-wracking moment the automated fort scans you as friendly. Phew.

Your Order's fortress-system has changed again in the month you've been away, with the jump points much more fortified- each of the 6 has at least one massive fort watching over it, and a few have more. You think you spot some more building slips and fuel scoops in orbit of the Forge too, but it's impossible to tell from this range. Instead, you transmit your report towards the Chapterhouse and continue in-system at a leisurely pace.

"Dauntless, lad!" Flavius is pleased to see you, of course, and comms you as soon as you're within decent communication distance of the Forge. Of course, most of his happiness probably comes from the plans for the missile pod you forwarded in your report. "It seems you've returned with gifts. How did the battlecruiser perform? Any problems?"

"It exceeded my expectations." You inform him dryly, and Flavius just laughs.
"It better. I have the other two battlecruisers I promised you, and some reinforcements for your screen. Oh, and a surprise. We'll talk once you've docked, lad." He cuts the connection, and you concentrate on guiding your squadron towards the Forge.

Your auxiliaries peel off first, and then one by one you hand off your automated screen, letting the ones damaged too heavily for their onboard facilities to repair head to a dock. Yourself and the other battlecruisers are guided into docks side by side, and hundreds of drones swarm over your hull, checking for damages, mostly. Your magazines are full, replenished by the auxiliaries on the way home. Some of your own onboard drones carry the crate with the strange core inside it onto the station. In short order, Flavius comms you once more.

"Alright lad, I've spent the since you were away setting up facilities to upgrade and retrofit the ships we already have, and I've got a list ready for you. Alternately, I've got the next set of missions from the Grand Master. If you want, you can choose that before you decide. It's up to you."

>Upgrades

There's no doubt in your mind you want to see what toys Flavius has for you first, and he uploads a list.
"I'll only have time to retrofit one thing from the list, lad, so keep that in mind."

>Pick an upgrade from the list. Keep in mind that once you choose an upgrade from a category, you lock out the rest of that catagory's tier, but will unlock the next tier of that upgrade down the road. Some upgrades will affect not just your own ships, but some or all of the ships in your squadron.

>Offence Tier 1
Plasma turrets: Made from reverse-engineered Legion technology, these dorsal turrets are capable of absolutely shredding through armour. However, they have atrocious range, less than half a light-second. Affects your ship only.
Pulse torpedoes: By removing some missile tubes and lasers, 6 antimatter pulse torpedoes can be integrated into your broadside. However, they have a range of only 14 light seconds, and despite each one being able to devastate a cruiser, they require significant recharge time. Affects your ship only.
Bolt-on missile pods: With the new missile pods, Flavius is able to construct a 'flatpack' design that can be bolted onto your dorsal and ventral hull. They have slightly bigger missiles than your own broadside, and each side can be either flushed for a single massive salvo, or used to thicken your own salvos. Affects capital ships.

>Defence Tier 1
Directed shields: With the installation of new mag shield projectors, the main power of the field can be directed at a particular side of the ship. This strengthens the shield in a particular direction, but weakens it in all others. Affects all ships.
Sandcasters: Special cannons that can be bolted onto your ship, carrying canisters full of compressed lead granules. After being fired, they detonate and throw their payload out into space, blocking weapons until the cloud is sufficiently dispersed. At extremely high velocities, it can also be utilised as a weapon. Affects capital ships.
Explosive Reactive Armour: By plating a ship in explosives sandwiched between ceramic plates, its heat resistance is passively improved, but when a shot strong enough to break through the mag shields hit, the explosives detonate and project a stream of plasma strong enough to defeat the weapon. However, they are single-use and must be replaced after battle. Affects capital ships.

cont.
>>
>>1962069

>Sensors Tier 1
Grav sensors: After discovering Legion ships use some sort of drive that changes the gravity in the immediate vicinity of the ship to propel themselves, Flavius created grav sensors small enough to fit into capital ships. Passively increases Legion ship detection and lock-on. Affects capital ships.
Tachyon ping: Similar to the active sonar ping of ancient history, a tachyon projector is fitted to the bow of the vessel. When fired, these tachyons bounce off whatever they hit, giving a real-time glimpse at a system. However, it is relatively easy to trace back to the projecting vessel. projector affects your ship, all ships can detect.

>Support Tier 1
Grav-pulse Recon Drones: Experimental drones fitted with a directional grav pulse emitter that effectively enables FTL recon capability within a system. However, the drones are quite large and ungainly, with only limited stealth. Moreover, their rate of transmission is extremely limited without further upgrades. Affects all capital ships.
Parasite fighters: With advancements in mass reduction technology, small strike fighters are once again becoming viable, and can be carried on the hull of a capital ship. Their small size allows them to reach .8 lightspeed quite easily, and their HVMs can deliver relativistic strikes on largely-unaware targets. They also make use of reverse-engineered Legion plasma technology for their spinal weapon, and can threaten smaller enemy ships at very close range.

I made the list beforehand, but I really should have written the descriptions too.

"I think this should be the most useful for now." You decide, sending your choice to Flavius.
"Good choice, lad. Make sure you're not shot so you can hit them for longer, very good choice indeed. I'll get to work right away, and you can take a looksie at this mission listings."

>Mission 1: Aggressive
The first series of recons in force identified several minor Legion refuelling points, and at least one medium fleet base. These need to be taken out with spoiling raids to keep the Legion on the back foot, so the Grand Master is detailing several Knight-Brothers to assault them. You will mostly be making high-speed hit-and-run attacks with the other Knight-Brothers interred in the new Swifts.

>Mission 2: Defensive
With the Order of Tyr's Star effectively crippled for the foreseeable future, the Grand Master has ordered a large convoy to assist them to getting their feet back under them, and some light pickets to keep watch in the systems surrounding their new fortress system. Though the Paladin send from them will be riding herd, they have requested another escort to make sure nothing goes wrong.

>Mission 3: Assistance
The Olympian task force encountered some Legion presence, and it appears they are attempting to move into the area to flank the Chapterhouse and Olympus. The humans are preparing an all-out assault, and the Grand Master has decided to send a battleship division in support, but would also like to send an additional screening element. As a battlecruiser division, you're perfect for the job.

A week passes as your existing ships are overhauled, you accept four more battlecruisers to bring you up to two divisions, and your screen is reinforced. You lose the two frigates who managed to stay alive, and when you ask Flavius he explains that they're being refitted for in-system duty. Fair enough, you suppose. The time you spend around Forge is actually the longest you have since the current conflict started, and you do somewhat enjoy the Grand Master's Sunday Mass, as well as getting to hear about the preliminary results of Flavius' study of the strange core you brought back (which is nothing useful). Apparently similar cores have been found in other Legion installations, but none as undamaged as the one you found.

Eventually, however, the courier drone from the Knight-Brother stationed in the Olympus system arrives, informing you that the humans are readying their fleet to move on the Legion, and you're on your way within the day. With you are several auxiliaries and a Longbow-class railgun cruiser to deliver to the Knight-Brother on station. You're quite interested to see it in action.

When you arrive in Olympus, you take your time cruising on in after being let through by the jump point fort. The system looks even more heavily industrialised since your last visit around just under a year ago. There's a much more substantial presence in space now, with multi-kilometre-wide solar satellites orbiting the sun, mining operations throughout the belt, and squat forts sitting in orbit of Mount Olympus, the actual primary planet, bristling with weapons. In orbit of Arcadia, the next planet along from Olympus and home to a significant human population, sits the human fleet. Its ships are much sleeker than yours, but appear to be the size of an Order cruiser otherwise. That's all you can tell from this range.

Finally, much further out at one of the solar Lagrange points is the Knight-Brother you're here to meet.

>Meet with your Knight-Brother first and deliver your convoy. You are technically under his command, after all.

Though you should definitely report to your fellow Knight-Brother, you'd also like the chance to talk with the humans a little. So, you send the auxiliaries and the railgun cruiser on, changing course to swing by near enough to Arcadia to not experience light-lag. When you're close enough, your job is made easier by one of the vessels in orbit painting you with a comm laser. You initiate a standard handshake protocol and establish a communications link. After a moment's thought, you reply. "Would you know how I can contact Admiral Gracen or Captain Weston?" The Olympian comms officer sounds a little non-plussed, but he recovers remarkably quickly.
"Ah, Admiral Gracen is probably in high command on Olympus, but if you mean Rear Admiral Weston, he's on board at the minute. Would you like me to see if he's available?" You give a mental shrug.
"Yes, please." You have to wait a short while, but soon the feed switches to visual, and you see a human in his late thirties, in simple dark navy uniform and several pips on his collar- rank, presumably.
"Weston here, who am I speaking to?" His voice is a perfect match for the one you remember, and you breathe a tiny mental sigh of relief. That could have been awkward.
"I don't know if you remember me, but I was part of the force that gave you a hand about nine or ten months back, the one that arrived first." The Rear Admiral's face splits into a big grin. "Of course I remember you! You guys saved me and my crew. What should I call you?"
"Dauntless will be fine." He looks puzzled, but quickly brushes it off.
"Sure, Dauntless, then. Uh, how have you been?"

"I've been giving better than I've gotten so far." You reply, and Weston shrugs with a nod.
"Fair enough. I assume you're reinforcements? Your friend urged me to wait until some arrived to launch Operation Clover." He frowns a little as he says that, but doesn't seem actually annoyed. "Well, it's given us more training time, which is never a bad thing."
"Yes, I am. I just wanted to get in touch with you before I linked up with the rest of our task force." You're passing Arcadia now, and you note that light lag will start to set in gradually before much longer. "I'm sure my superior will be in touch with you shortly."
"Outstanding." Weston gives you a firm nod and a slight smile. "Tell him to contact me and I'll pass along our launch date. Weston, clear." The screen blanks, and you turn your attention to your fellow Knight-Brother.

You spend the next several hours decelerating into the Lagrange point your Knight-Brother is waiting for you at, with his force, of course. A reinforced battleship division - three of the great, hulking mountains of armour plate - as well as two cruiser squadrons and an understrength destroyer flotilla. From what Flavius mentioned to you, light units are at a little bit of a bottleneck at the minute, as they're vital for picketing systems and patrolling, yet most of the construction effort has gone into fielding battleships and now battlecruisers to match the Legion's own capital ships.
"Dauntless, isn't it?" His demeanour is firm, but as friendly as he is calm and composed, and you find yourself warming to him quickly. "The Grand Master sent a courier saying you'd be coming. Name's Ajax, heard you're quite the rising star." You note the auxiliaries off-loading their supplies onto his battleships, and the railgun cruiser taking its place in his formation. "Intel says the Legion is trying to move into this region in force, so I'm glad you're here. These humans are motivated, but it doesn't feel right, letting them get in harm's way. Anyway, I'll be letting them know we're ready to move now you're here, but do you have any questions first?"

Given that we are now operating side by side with humans for perhaps the first time within Order memory, what is the protocol regarding shared information? Has anything changed, or are we still avoiding informing the humans of the true nature of the Order?

What will the humans' role be given that they cannot maintain the same engagement speeds as we can? Accelerating at hundreds of gravities and being exposed to radiation and debris will severely limit their options. What role will they play, and will assets need to be committed to ensure they're not picked off or used by the enemy to slow us?

>Questions indeed

"Yes, a few. Firstly, what are we expecting, and how big are the Legion forces?"
"That's the depressing part. It appears they've moved in with at least three battleship divisions, and substantial screening elements. That's at least a hundred ships right there, and the scouting report is a good couple of weeks old now. They might have moved in more in the meantime."
"And the base?"
"We're not sure, but they seem to be setting up shop in a debris belt, possibly utilising asteroids as a mass anchor. That's why we have the Longbow. Flavius perfected some bunker-busting antimatter torpedoes, if we need them."
"Good, good." You think for a moment, and your thoughts turn to the humans.
"What about the humans? I got the impression we were meant to be supporting them." Ajax gives you a mental image of a grimace as he sighs.
"Yes, though as I said, I'd prefer to not have them in the line of fire at all. I'm going to request they act as our reserve with those disturbing 'Counter Mass' missiles of theirs. They can only match half our acceleration anyway, and maybe two thirds our maximum speed." You wonder how far they've come with their own high-velocity missiles. From the sounds of it, they've put a lot of work into it.
"Final question, what are the rules on sharing information with them?"
"They know about the Order, but still think we're human-crewed vessels, I think, though I'm sure some have suspicions. I'm sure it goes without saying, but don't tell them. Humans were distrustful of our kind before the Fall, and I doubt they've gotten better since. Anyway."

Moving onto other subjects, Ajax sends you a graphic representation of a star system.
"As you can see, there's two inner planets, the main debris belt, a gas giant I have no doubt they're using for fuel, and a fourth rocky planet quite far out. This should be more or less how it looks when we arrive. The pink spot is where our recon spotted the most activity, smack dab in the centre of the belt. I assume they're intending to set up local manufacturing capability to churn out more of their infernal ships.
"In any case, as I see it, we have two main options: I will draw out their main fleet strength, and come at them in the open from the outer system. You will come in behind them, trash any facilities they have, then come behind them to help be finish giving them a good thrashing. Alternatively, we could advance in together, take out all their ships at once, and then smash up their base. We'll work the humans in somehow either way. What do you think?"

"I think we should go with the first one." You decide, after a bit of musing, and Ajax gives you a signal of affirmation.
"Flavius sent us some of these new missile pods, so I'll dump those out the back of my battleships to beef up my opening salvo, make sure their attention is on me while you do your thing. More importantly though, what about the humans? Should they go with you or me?"

Ajax sends you a set of manoeuvring instructions, and as one your divisions light their drives to fall towards Arcadia.

In the end, it takes just under another week for the humans to sort out their task force, and under Rear Admiral Weston, a dozen of their Heroic-class cruisers with some of their own fleet auxiliaries form up behind you to set out on your first jump.

>Mission time

The system you're interested in is only three jumps away from Olympus, which is definitely dangerous. You're relatively far 'north-east' of the Chapterhouse and the infernal Legion dyson, which is what makes this area even more dangerous. If the Legion manage to get a fleet base in this area, they can support a push right through the unprotected flank of the Order's mission sector and forcing combat units away from the front lines to deal with it.

The combined Order/Olympian fleet arrives at the unnamed system in a great flash of Cherenkov radiation, with little effort to avoid being seen. Ajax's task force forms up around his battleships, with a cruiser and two destroyers being left to keep an eye on the auxiliaries, which hang near the jump point. The Oympian force follows suit, leaving their auxiliaries behind and forming up on Ajax's flank. The combined task force starts loafing in-system, and you turn to the tactical plot.

The friendly task force is a big blob of green on your sensors, and you note that you've come out just a quarter of the way around the system from the Legion base, which gives you two options. Do you swing around the outside of the system, trying to be as quiet as possible while Ajax draws them out, or do you go on the inside, which would allow you to come in on the base from the sun?

I'd prefer to be sneaky. Does coming from the sun provide any stealth? They may overcommit if they misjudge fleet strength.

Both of the options are as stealthy as you can manage with a capital ship, even if it's a small one like a battlecruiser. The first relies on distance, the second being in front of a really big light source so they can't pick you out.

Then we'll do the sun one, 'cause bandwagons.

The Order of Radiant Light shall do some radical enlightening!

>Swing inwards

Definite consensus there. I'm going to need 2d100s: first for sneaking, second for Ajax and the humies.

>63, 60 vs 25

You're still too far out to be detected, so after doing a final check you upload a course to the rest of your own division and lay it in at the best speed you think you'll be able get away with. You need to arrive after the main Legion fleet has detected Ajax and moved out to stop him, but you also have much further to go, looping around the sun to catch them unawares and from behind.

Ajax streams the feed from his recon drones to you until the star gets in the way, and what you see doesn't look good- a whopping 8 enemy battleships, and 150 screening craft, plus what looks like at least a 100 more destroyers buzzing around the debris belt. Ajax has 3 battleships, 37 cruisers, and 12 destroyers, plus the dozen human cruisers. Well, you'll just have to make sure you even the odds.

When you duck behind the corona of the star, Ajax is still a couple of hours from projected combat, as are you, so you settle in and pass the time running checks on your weapons as well as the new shields all your ships have, but every time they come up fine. It's almost disappointing, since it gives you one less thing to actually worry about.

Eventually, however, you swing back around the star, and immediately cast around with your passives. A scene of destruction greets you, as you're just in time to see Ajax's first missile salvo. Seeing him flush all the pods he brought with him is quite the impressive site, considering that each has 10 missiles, and each of his battleships dropped out 20 from their cargo bays. Unfortunately, you don't have the time to examine the Legion fleet or the damage it takes because your own tactical alarms wail. Through cunning or sheer bad luck, there's a Legion battleship with 23 cruisers and 97 destroyers in formation, and it's already halfway between the debris belt and your position even as you come out from around the star.

There's no way to get around it, so you'll just need to hope your new shields work as advertised.

And with that ends this week's chapter of the quest! Sorry again last night's part was a bit shorter and I was so slow writing.

Next time: Dauntless fights against the odds once again! Ajax pounds Legion ships into itty bitty pieces! The humans probably do something too. See you next week!

Thanks for running this, have a good weekend!

Sorry for posting this here OP but this is the closest thread I can find for this.

There was a Dreadnought Quest that had started a couple of weeks back by CentralComputer, it had some potential. Does anyone know what happened to it? I have been trying to keep my eye out for it and either it has stopped for some reason or I have just been missing it.
