hello and welcome to Broken Horizon quest where we tread the skies with out trusty crew and officers , please read the following before starting

Salted Skies

It is days like these that make you wonder why. Why did you choose this life?

Not that it matters right now, your trusty steam ship is badly damaged because of this storm; an ire from the gods above. You don't hear or see any of your crewmen, where are they?

You take a moment to collect your thoughts and stay calm despite the excessive rocking of the ship.

You are the captain of what's left of this ship. You are in your cabin. What's... Left of it, actually. But this isn't the time to despair. You have to get out of here, rally your crew, and fly to a safe port. Then again...who are you? Just like her sister below, the skies has its way to turn men mad.

Please Write your character's:

Twisted fate, maybe more...

Ah yes, it almost felt like a fleeting dream. Your cold hand clutches at the door handle leading to the chaos outside. Of course it would get stuck at a moment like this. It always jams, why would today be different?

Suddenly, The hinges surrender to wrath of the ongoing storm and flies out of the ship, to places unknown.

Once outside, the magnitude of this whole ordeal finally dawns on you. You are being pelted by ice rocks the size of decapitated heads. The static is making your hair stand up due several lightning that fall uncomfortably close to your ship. And lastly, your hard-earned assortments of curiosities and fleets glittering the ireful skies in this endless vortex.

"Captain!" Says a blurred figure a well-worn uniform. This unknown figure was doing the best to reach you.

Oh yes, you almost forgot your about your officer...who is that officer?

A wounded pride

Everything starts to collpase beneath your feet. You stand there, helpless, closing your eyes to welcome your demise.

You gained an Oddity: 1x Terrible visage.
Your terror has increased by 5! (Currently 5/100)

Another nightmare to bite your heels. Your ship (As old as she may be) still flies undefeated by any wicked storm. You looked out of your cabin's window. Here she lies, Port Malady, recently struck by an underhanded attack done by the men and women of the anarchic territories. The desire for freedom can be indeed a destructive thing to witness. The port cries for help be it from anyone....but, where there is war, there is profit to be made.

Success

A heartfelt moment

Be it with Shovels or with raw blistered hands, everyone on board did what they could to rescue the trapped and the injured. The Sleepless devotee (despite her never ending exhaustion) saved more than a single life with her miracle hands. A lonely mother hugged your surgeon tightly after saving her sole daughter. She made sure to award her and your men for your efforts. Later that night,
Your men gulped what they could after such effort, you couldn't blame their unhinged appetite.

You gained: 1x charming necklace
You gained an Oddity: Stern-eyed Magister favor +10
You lost 2x Supplies! (Currently 8 on hold)

A man with few words

You demanded an audience with the Magister himself only to find him overseeing the fresh burial of the dead. His features never change, possibly never will.

"Thank you." is his sole reply, his eyes belong to the dead taken so hastily from our world. "Desperate times they are, we need any food and medicine on board any ship. We have fleets to compensate. They slipped under the glass flock."

A kind gesture

The report is well detailed, it describes what happened on various accounts. All leads to Salt, the cursed child of the sea. It has no place in the skies. A Salt-cursed man surrenders himself to the thirst and drinks water. This explosion is but a diversion to a handful of ships who manage to enter the HMI's domain unnoticed, they quickly bombard the port before fleeing as fast as they appear to the glass flocks. They know their targets, vitals ones to be precise. How peculiar.

A sad tragedy indeed.

Before you departure you exchange a handful of supplies, the soldiers handling them are most grateful. They give you your well deserved fleets with a smile on their face.

You gained an oddity: 1x Signed report: Port Malady
You gained an oddity: Stern-eyed Magister favor +10 [Currently +20]
You gained 20x fleets [Currently: 170 fleets]
You lost 1x Supply! [Currently: 7 supplies]

A moment!

As you are preparing your ship, A checkered gentlemen almost shouts from afar begging you to stop.

You give him a moment or two to catch his breath. He held a suitcase made of stone with great care hence his slow pace. "Saltson Esta-"

His eyes are fixed on the pin you proudly wear; The Guillermo Antoine Eberett foundation. His pin was purely hidden with his checked suit.

"Goodness, why haven't I seen you before? no matter. no matter. I need good ship heading for the Estate. I will pay you handsomely in fleets. What is your say?"

>Accept [200 fleet]

Swift departure

The checkered man is in no short of fleets but he is glad of your offer. He boards your ship with satisfaction and glee

He points out that the Estate is due to west in an almost straight line. How convenient.

You departed Port Malady gaining 150 fragment [350 left for your next skill]
You gained 100x fleets [Currently 270 fleets]

Fleet is an odd name for a currency, it is how it goes. The HMI were the first to reintroduce coinage as a currency. This coin had the queen's undying face on one side and the other had a fearsome fleet. The coin's previous name faded over time and was simply reduced to fleets.

The skies are calm, wherever you may go, the stars from above light your path gently.

Her sullen eyes contrast her frail, white figure. She accepts your invitation with great modesty. The Devotee parts her pink lips a couple of times, her plate mostly untouched. Her bony fingers crosses together, a prayer for your welfare...never left to be unanswered.

Her lips pars to address you with a faint voice, almost audible "The hourless calls, the white long for an embrace, a release from above." her slim fingers points to the ceiling. With a weak smile, she excuses herself.

Sunless

The checkered gentlemen left his plate empty without a grain or a scrap. you were already full from your meal with the surgeon. He was more than happy to eat your share.

In his gulps and chomps, he mentions the contents of his stone suit case. A special Glyph made from salt! He suggests that the book itself is awfully fragile and must be read by a salt reader which are few to find. The Estate manufactures curse-free, approved salt. They have the knowledge....

When the food settles in, he retains his more formal manners. The two of you had a discussion about the surface and Glyphs to a lesser extent. In fact it was you who did all the talking, he was very intrigued to hear about this supposed fabled place.

He didn't leave you empty handed though "Any ship will perish in the Sunless layer down below. The four can refit you ship to delve there safety. On the Very west of Her Majesty's Reach, you will find their isle with wings of iron and steam."

To reach the surface, you must drop from the mundane layer into the sunless one then finally the Shattered layer. Every Journey starts with a step...

You gained an Oddity : Acquaintance :The Four
You started the first step towards your ambition...

"Captain!" One of the Crewmen rudely interrupted you "An rogue ship!"

Plenty of those roam the Queen's domain. they are regularly hunted down by the royal fleets but they are never truly dead. Sky rats they are.

This one looked already damaged and yet it was coming for you, so desperate to gain an advantage.

COMBAT

Our Ship:
AP: 4/4

Arbiter-class 'StingOwar' Skytooth [small sized, below average speed]

50/50 hull
10 crewmen
Glassworks Exdous steam engine [5 evasion]

Slots and weapons:

Forward weapon [Small]: Skysaw [Boarding weapon, 20 damage, short range, 2 turn cooldown, deals +5 bonus damage to attacks from the rear]

Side weapon (right) [Small]: Brass & Demise 'Eclipse' [Projectile weapon, 15 damage, medium range, 1 turn cooldown, Overdriving Eclipse grants it +10 bonus damage]

Their Ship:

AP: 3/3

Scet-class raiding ship [very small size, below average speed]

20/30 hull
?? crewmen
?? steam engine [5 evasion]

Slots and weapons:

Forward weapon [Small]: Bakenzer [Projectile weapon, 10 damage, short range, 2 turn cooldown]

Alright, a couple of rules Before starting:

-the coloured arrowhead is the enemy, we are the black arrow head
-dots inside arrow head resembles the weapon outlet
-the dots on the far left resemble our measurement for movement and weapon range [ short range means one bar of dots, medium means two and so on]
-1 AP is the cost of most actions such as firing, moving or rotating. Bigger and stronger weapons costs more AP, if you moved past the dot bar (which counts as 1 AP), you will spend more than 1 AP according to your destination.
-other combat rules apply as mentioned in the docx

so here we go, we have the first move, we should we do? dont be afraid to use the draw feature or ms paint with your posts. if you have more questions, pleas ask

rolling will be decided after we confirm our action

So is anybody here actually aware of the sunless sea Lore and Style? This question is related to another question which is how many people right now want to sleep with the Tireless Devote? Because if the masters are still in charge, we'll have a few nice evenings before heartbreak which is the usual MO an incredibly Victorian steampunk setting. Short lived loves stories and pleasant evenings are an actual currency and they're sold a dime a dozen

I updated our character's sheet so things will be easier . will post it the next time in the OP

Hexes it is, same rules will apply but with decent measurement this time.

-2 hexes means one move and one AP to spend. Rotating counts as 1 AP better engines also means more hexes to cover per move (and more evasion too)
-Short range=2 hexes, medium=4, long=6, very long=8
-Ships can be hit according to the hexes the occupy [all the red zone]

we can start now if you want

>>1988630
Eh, why not?
What's this Guillermo Antoine Eberett foundation?
>>
>>1988456
So far I really like the quest. Been a fan of the Sunless series for quite some time now. As far as the Tireless Devotee goes, I think we need more characterization before I can form much of an opinion about her. This sort of ties into another point of mine. Since Sunless Skies is already heavily text-based, I think the quest would be better if you focused more on narrative and characterization than crunch. With things as they are now, you're basically running a 1:1 replica of Sunless Skies' gameplay with some names changed around. I think that if you made some things more quest-like and organic, everything would flow a little bit better.
>>
>>1988643
The historian club we are in as well as the checkered gentlemen.

So combat logs or narrative combat without the numbers? my question remains unanswered. both are fine really
>>
>>1988653
Alright Roll call then, I'm here and free for a while
>>
>>1988653
Both are fine with me too to be honest.
On one hand narrative will give us more story and it wouldn't be as reliant on luck, but the logs would give it a sense of unpredactibility, so...ehhh
>>
>>1988651
i don't know, i have been avoiding characterization deliberately focusing on the world around us instead of the Main character ala the source material. The focus here is the world itself.

Not saying that you are wrong though, i am taking another approach, that's it.

>>1988657
>>1988668

things are still being calculated in the background if we go for the narrative.
>>
>>1988657
>>1988668
narrative combat won't break the flow instead of numbers and what not posted. Combat Log is of course faster to write . Keep in mind that i will have to draw our actions in the grid so this will already take some time.

I can try some weird hybrid thing [narration followed by what we did in numbers].

Posting quickly on /qtg/ before starting.
>>
>>1988678
Eh let's go with combat logs, they are faster and clearer

A large mansion, crumbled and weary overseeing fields of salt culled from the surface. Each field has a man chained in the very center. They all looked miserable and wretched. They sit there idly, few twitches here and there but nothing more.

A grinning statue of Ivory and obsidian stands in the heart of the Estate, grinning at incoming visitors and reaching its arms to the horizon. A pitiless bag made from a pulsating cloth growls hungrily next to the statue.

Ships forming a secured gauntlet circles slowly around the Estate like sulking vultures, each ship is chained to the other in an unending cycle. Their cannons and weapons primed at the wicked statue.

Time to dock.

Even with your most trusted crewmen by your side. You had this eerie feeling about this place.

"Finally!" the gentleman exclaimed clutching to his suitcase. He...simply vanishes in a gust of salt the moment his foot touches the salt-riddled ground. Little did you know about his fate after this moment

You gained 100x fleets [currently 454 fleets]

The bag kept gurgling in anticipation, the clothes collapses and expands upon itself, It doesn't savor the fleet at all. Instead, It spits it back with disgust.

"IMBECILE! SALT, SALT, SALT, IRON, SALT, MADDENED, WINED, SALT! MORE!" it shrieks in utter rage shocking your crewmen and yourself "IMBECILE! SALT , SALT , NO MORE MISERY SALT, NO MORE!"

The statue moved its head when you weren't looking, its grin grew even wider

More Salt

There is little to report but you write it down anyways. The wicked statue tilts its head ever so slightly just to keep you on edge. Its grin ate more that half of its obsidian face.

You gained an oddity: 1x Report: Saltson Estate.

The ships above were your witness as you scoured the Estate for someone to address, your misfortune was but a fuel to the statue. It contradicts the bag next to it who kept wailing about salt.

The night beacons, The iron gates around the estate close shut by itself after you left the fields. It was then when you hear the screams and wails of a thousand souls. Fleshing rippling, bone crackling, blood spilling...the madness of the Estate begins anew!

Women of Salt rising from the field caressing the seemingly undying men. They look at your crew once...just once but they lose any intrest soon after.

You gained an oddity: 1x horrible visage

A horrid truth

You were met with genuine laughter and mockery from the drunken lot in the Saltson Sty. They have seen it many atimes and yet it never grows old.

"Prisoners, brought here by her Majesty's finest drained of their souls and chained to extract misery out of the Salt...." says a half sobered man "...thats the real secret right here!"

Another decides to enlighten you "Salt belongs to the sea below. It doesn't belong here. Hardly a surprise to see it curses men of the skies! ha!"

The last of the them three talkative fellows gulped another shot "We don't see them but we hear them sometimes. The ivory man will shower you with fleets if you got a prisoner to spare. Ignore his little pet, the bugger wants to sample the impossible!"

Minutes later you found yourself drinking with these ill-lucked men. you and your crewmen drowned your fears and sorrows.

A new dawn

You almost began to get used to the smell of piss and spirits in the sty. Almost.

The madness slumbers once more, leaving her husks chained in the field. Soulless as they are. The prisoners return back to their silence.

A hard knock on the sty awakens half of its miserable customers. Grim men and women priming for you and your crew.

The grimmest of them addresses you "Your current presence has....enticed the Ivory man. He and his men are a powerful asset to have in HMI . Leave the Estate, You are not welcomed at the moment."

You had no other option but to comply.

A gift?

You were escorted back to your ship. The Ivory man (formerly the Wicked Statue) grinned slightly back at you and your crew before departure.

As the crew were telling to the rest what happened yesterday, you went back to your cabin for some respite. Instead, you found a black vial on top of a neatly folded letter.

>Keep them, open the letter

A reckless moment

Be it from morbid curiosity or the lack of common sense, you chose to drink a bottle of misery extracted from the sea salts.

The world blackens around you, you can hear them; men of old drowning and suffocating in endless seas down below. Your knees collapses, your chest tightens. The end?

You have gained an oddity: Menace: Muffled Misery.

Your Iron has decreased by 5!
Your eye has increased by 5!

Surrounded by our your crew, you wake up with a horrid black taste in your mouth. One that you can never wash away. Your Sleepless Devotee pulled your away from the claws of death by miracles unknown to you.

She, like the rest of your crew, are concerned about you. You almost hear whispers of someone calling you a madman.

After this dreadful incident, you send a scouter after feeding it well, it flies and flies until it comes back with good news.

Gentle grace

Your crewmen hum a song in a tongue forgotten by time, it has no trace but this song. You are not sure what it entails but it is quite energetic.

"Captain, I see her! A white Poktan and a blubbery one at that! " Her excitement is over the roof. Poktans are large, docile creature that roams the skies, originally from the hourless layer. It is said that they were the first emissaries send by the hourless from above but then again their meat is oh so delicious!

The creature acknowledges your presence with a curious hum as it wavers its large transparent tail upwards and downwards swimming peacefully in the skies.

Failure!
An elusive target

The sleepless devotee deals with the living not the dead. Her miracle hands can do so little in such situation.

You search high and low looking for a speck of blood or anything to latch onto....

Nothing.

All the crewmen were innocent, that or you couldn't find to daring evidence on one of them. Fearing for the cannibal taint to spread, your crewmen wrapped her corpse and threw it away. Those who were close to her shed a tear or two. She will be missed.

Your terror has increased by 7! (currently 41/100)

There is little to be said or done on the way to your destination. Dread lingers in the air, eyes flying around, paranoia on the rise.....
