Welcome to A Song of Silver & Sword: House Grallner Quest. Here we will follow the journey of Ser Landon Grallner, the Knight of Whitestone Keep sworn to House Belmore of Strong Song. The year is 288AC, winter is at its peak in the Vale, and the coffers of House Grallner grow thin as does its food supply. The smallfolk find themselves restless, the Mountain Clans grow bolder, and the shadows of the Mountains of the Moon loom large.

Prayers do not fall upon deaf ears, they find succor upon the mind of Ser Landon Grallner. With sword in hand and Faith as his shield, he rouses himself to the challenge.

It is cold. Dark. Bleak. Dreams of whispered memories, that float away just out of reach. These are not dreams, they are terrors, as if a dark veil has descended upon your mind in the late hours of the night. Attempting to look about is fruitless, it makes the whispers swirl and your mind ache. Your eyes wish to close but feel as if they are held open in this wakeless nightmare. Even the air that fills your lungs is cold, your chest feels like ice. But upon the back of your neck you feel a warmth, the body resists but the mind forces to it turn, despite the pain. For too long had these dreams been filled with nothing but darkness, the warmth turned to a flicker of light in the distance and you reach for it. A hope upon the thinnest of hopes to end these nightmares. The body presses forward, the mind screams in pain as the whispers growing in chorus from faint passing lyrics to that of wailing and horror. The light grows and your eyes begin to wet from the pain of looking upon it, unblinking unyielding. Falling to your knees you continue towards it, crawling against every resistance, every pain towards the light. Breath comes hard, filled with smoke and ember. Your hands feel cold upon the snow covered cobblestone. The seven braziers surrounding you do not give warmth, only the blazing inferno before you, a hellish fire that smokes black and smells of flesh, blood, and iron. You look up and the woman burns, just as it was, her body turned to charcoal and broken flesh. But her eyes remain, watching you despite the horrible screams of pain that comes from her mouth. The mind attempts to focus, the chorus of voices feel as if they were a song, so close to the tip of your tongue but fleeting and elusive. The words repeat over and over and you wish to scream when you feel yourself being drawn towards her into the fire by monsters born of shadows and smoke but it is as if you have no mouth to scream. The fire crackles about you as you draw close to the old woman’s lips, the words becoming clear as day just before your lips meet hers.

“Sal mun fer rok. Cral mor tok sen.”

[The 7th of Month II, 288AC - First Light]

You awake with a cold sweat upon your body, taking in breath quickly and rapidly as you pat your body down looking for signs of burning flesh. The mind races but nowhere in particular, unfocused and undisciplined in its comprehension of the dreams that had plagued you since the woodswitch’s cottage. Usually they were dark and cold, black things that served no purpose other than to torment with undecided purpose. In truth you had not dreamed in years, small fleeting things you oft more than not hardly recalled upon waking being the norm. But these dreams were real, vivid, and they sat upon your mind like a weight, particularly this one, a new development in them.

Sitting upon the side of the Captain’s bed you splash some water upon your face and decide it was time for morning prayer and ritual. It has not your chapel, but the Seven were at home where you made it, a small comfort. Whitestone Keep deserved a place of worship you think to yourself, perhaps some of your winnings could go to that, as you set about your small offerings, a few candles you bought in Krayenport with your winnings before you had left that same evening. You did not wish to think of the Melee now, it had been tainted by whatever dark plots, politics, and jealousy that had been born between the two Blyth brothers and it sickened you. Coin and victory were easy things, but the disgust born of that event made the title of victor something you would would find yourself hard pressed to admit nor brag to, unless it served purpose.

Your fingers go to task upon your breastplate, examining the front for blemish or rot. It surprised you to see your plat had barely taken damage during the Melee, though in hindsight it wasn’t as much a shock, your poor shield had taken the brunt of the damage, though held up well all the same. It would need some proper maintenance you think after the Dawntower is done you think. Upon the backside of your breast plate you pick at what little mud was still left and scrap with your thumb nail at a piece that will not come away. You bring it closer to eye, whispered prayers to the Smith upon lip and pick at it some more before realizing the worst, rust. Placing it down carefully you frown at the suit and begin to scour the rest of the pieces. It was an old set you knew it to be true, perhaps seven or eight years now. And while it had been built to last the amount of patching, righting dents and scratches, and not being of the highest quality steel had finally caught up to it. You could certainly stave off the death of your favoured suit, going to the spot with sandpaper for the better part of the morning as the Spruce Song fought its way back up the Greatgorge towards home. You were told that you would arrive by morning and the way the sailors yelled and hollered a few hours later indicted to you such was true. You frown at the place where the rust had been and decide it is enough. Calling Parwyn Waynwood into your room he begins to help you assemble the full plate upon your body to disembark. You were not as bold nor stupid as the Ironborn were to wear it upon the top deck, but continued to reside in the Captain’s Quarters until you had made landfall and docked. Luckily the ship was one of the few still able to dock in Whiteberth, the town that sat nestled beneath the Mountains of the Dawn and Whitestone Keep. You find an escort compromising of Ser Steffon Stonesifer and a handful of his guards, as well as Ser Trevor Trant holding the reigns of Warrior, your black courser.

“Hail Ser!” Ser Steffon calls and you flick your wrist towards him in response to the salute from him and his men. At least the guards had some discipline instilled in them. You notice upon your approach a handsome elder man upon a golden steed, perhaps a hair above or below Trevor’s age. He bows his head as you come to Trevor taking Warrior’s reigns and mounting up alongside the rest of the company. Ser Trevor speaks, as you round to face them, “We hear you bring good tidings Ser. Victorious ones.”

“Not those without stain,” you remark simply and click your tongue to begin the short trek home towards the Whitestone.

“And we heard of those as well,” Trevor mumbles while catching up with you, “Ser, as promised, the new Captain of the Grallner First Regiment. An old friend of mine from my youth, when I squired in the Riverlands, I am pleased to introduce Ser Cullen Gauthier. Former Captain of the Woolington Guard, veteran of the War of the Ninepenny Kings and Robert’s Rebellion both.”

>Success, One Degree.
>Failed.

You turn your head to regard the man who wears a relatively stoic and serious but he regards you in turn with respect, “Ser,” he says bluntly in response.

“A fourth-cousin twice removed from the Lord of Maidenhall. There are quite a few of them, I was to marry one once upon a time even, not as populous nor as weaselly as the Freys mind, but a good family, strong and true amongst their men. Since the Rebellion...” Trevor begins again drawing your attention towards your castellan once more, “Since the Rebellion I have been told he has found himself without work. Lord Gareth Gauthier thought it appropriate to strip him of rank and title following a raid from loyalist that nearly destroyed the small town of Woolington. The man has little idea nor care towards the orderly retreat and saving of the vast majority of the smallfolk and his men through sheer discipline and training. The First needs a man like Ser Cullen.”

“What say you Ser Cullen?” you ask the man.

“I say that I have seen the devastation brought on by men of poor birth and leadership being allowed to their own devices is what I say,” Ser Cullen responds gruffly, “I can have these men whipped into shape within the month. I swear it upon my good name. I understand you are a man of good Faith and virtue Ser, I would not deign to lie to you.”

“Ser Cullen is good for his word Ser, I vouch for him,” Trevor follows, “And… Well he brought some of his own men. As we’ve discussed the lands are bleeding dry of fighting men besides green boys and greybeards, in my letter implored him to bring any that would follow.”

“Twenty odd good men,” Ser Cullen says, “Another cousin who serves as my squire. Riverlanders all former guards such as myself that were let go due to their loyalty to me, mind, they’ll need to adjust to the cold of winter but they're loyal to me. And thus you.”

You sniffle, the cold winds of the day and overcast sky framing the conversation, “Then I will have you.”

Trevor coughs, and Ser Cullen continues his emotionless look towards you, “I will swear my sword to you Ser, this I promise. But I wish for a payment beyond coin and title. Within Maidenhall there lives a young woman, another Gauthier far away from inheritance or the main line as myself. If you swear to arrange our betrothal as is your ability as my liege within the year I will be your man, dedicated and true, that is my only caveat. If you do this my men are yours, my sword is yours, and I will not leave but bring her and grow a family here under your House, all loyal men of House Grallner.”

Trevor presses his eyes forward and you screw your face up, the man hardly regards you with any more than the same unyielding face as before. How did he do that? You wonder privately, your face always gave away your thoughts too easily. Perhaps with age came the wisdom of hiding your tells…

“Ser Cullen’s men would bring the First back up to speed, Ser,” Trevor says interrupting your thoughts, “They would be ready for Asher’s ambush, more so than the greenhorns we’ve been recruiting now would be at least. A betrothal is nothing compared to the value of these men.”

The gates of the Whitestone’s first gatehouse quickly approach as you sit in quiet thought, the day slowed your mind as if it were honey in the cold. Could you even arrange such a thing? The mere topic of your own marriage was a frightful thing filled with uncertainty and doubts. You had not heard of the Gauthiers in truth… Perhaps Cassondra Belmore had in her time in Riverfoot Keep. Lord Perryn would have most definitely. Could you call upon them for such a favor? You did not doubt the old Lord Perryn would be happy to help but… The things that still rattled about your head regarding your silver belle… You sigh deeply and come to a conclusion.

Ser Cullen Gauthier
Notes:
>Accepting him and his men will bring the Grallner First Regiment back up to Trained, from Green. (The Second DC)
>Ser Cullen Gauthier is as a Knight of Quality (Page 218), with an additional +1B in Command.
>These men are trained as Pikemen first and foremost and Ser Cullen will suggest down the line changing the First from a unit of Infantry into Pikemen.
>The Betrothal of Ser Cullen Gauthier to Lady Gauthier is within your capabilities, but will require you to call in a favor to see it done.

Vote:

Nodding your head quickly towards the Riverlander Knight you look forward, “You’ve my word if I’ve your sword.”

“I swear it Ser,” he says simply.

Perhaps you would find yourself in contact with Cassondra and Lord Perryn sooner than you would like you think privately but shake the thought away as you dismount past the second gatehouse that leads into the bailey. The stable hand takes your horse and you cast a look back at the two elder Knights who are speaking between themselves now. Doubtless there was more to Ser Gauthiers story than what you had been told but he seemed a true man. Worth his weight in coin and home more than like, as would his men, hopefully they’d be able to bolster your forces in the coming days enough to give you the further edge in Asher’s ambush. You look about the bailey and notice it seems livelier than it had the last time you were here. Mostly military men were about, though most of them you did not recognize. They wore badges that were not yours nor Lord Belmores either, but rather the black gauntlet of House Fossett. Safe to assume that Soren Fossett had arrived with his men.

Ser Trevor Trant walks up behind you having dismounted his own horse, “Soren Fossett has arrived with his men, one hundred and fifty strong,” he says with a slight hesitation, “Ser Warren Stone, the marshall of his forces wished to speak to you upon your arrival home. I told him he would speak with you when you deemed it necessary, and that you’d more than like speak to him within the presence of Soren Fossett and not to him directly.”

You grunt slightly, hand upon the pommel of long sword as you look about.

Maffew said he wished to speak to you as well, a handful of letters have arrived for you.

“I will speak to him first then,” you respond, “Have we word from Ser Asher?”

“Yes Ser.”

“Assemble the war council in the great hall,” you say, “I will speak to Soren Fossett and Warren Stone there amongst our council.”

“As you say Ser,” he says and flicks his wrists towards a few pages who go about to deliver his words.

You take the opposite route of the lads, climbing stairway to the bridge towards the Maester’s Tower. The wind picks up slightly as you cross the open bridge, and you need to steady yourself on the stone barricade that barely came up to your mid thighs, Seven only knew what the architect of this pass had been thinking. The door swings open upon your second knock and Maffew Shett smiles at you widely before ushering you in.

“Congratulations Ser, on your victory in the Melee I mean,” he says as he takes a seat and offers you drink, warm cider, he is snacking on a heavy pound cake that you wonder the origin before being brought to attention by the five letters dropped before you, “These arrived while you were away,” he pauses to pick up the first and points at the purple seal, “A letter from Lord Belmore. Brief, but he says he was able to negotiate a fair price for Bordain arms. For every two units of processed silver and two hundred dragons we send Lord Belmore he will be able to procure a unit of superior arms from the Grey Lord. It is a fair discount I’d say, better than I could have negotiated at least. If we send some wealth with the Spruce Sound before she departs you could have the weapons within the month and a new sword for yourself. Oh, and Ser Vyell Vyvyan will be here at the beginning of next month to begin your debrief regarding the Belmore army. He sends little word otherwise, though briefly mentions Maester Fallaways saying that Lincoln has made progress in his recovery.”

“Good…” you respond lightly looking to the side.

“Other news from your family. Your sister, Lelianna, has said she would be visiting in four months. Once your troubles with mountain clans are done with. She will be coming alone, with only her youngest son.”

“We will send an honor guard to accompany her.”

Maffew nods with a thought upon it, “As you say Ser.”

“What else then?”

“A letter from Lord Frey, or rather his son Ser Stevron Frey, I believe it came with Ser Gauthier,” he says with a chuckle, “Apparently he’s offering one of his daughter’s hand in marriage. You’ve a handful of options from the way the letter is worded though it is requested you come to the Crossing to make formal arrangements. I’ve put this in the loose maybe to no pile.”

“Is it wise to ignore Lord Frey?” you ask.

“Some would tell you no, others would tell you yes,” Maffew responds waving his hand in the air, “But Lord Frey sends a hundred of these letters every month, he cannot expect everyone to be returned. If you wish to deal with the Lord of the Crossing that is prerogative Ser. But to be frank there are far better prospects in the Vale.”

You grunt and wave your hand for him to continue.

“The fourth and fifth are more or less the same. The former is from Lord Hersy, inviting you to a Toruney in Newkeep three months from now. It is brief and curt. The latter is from Ser Cador Belmore, he requests your presence at the Tourney as his bannerman and sworn man. He will be there to court the young Lady Pricella Hersy, and to quote him, ‘by your cursed mouth’.”

You crack a slight smile and nod your head and lean back into the chair, “Ready ink and paper Maffew.”

“Words of response?”

“No.”

“Then..?”

“The the Great Sept, we will send a tithe, a portion of my winnings from the Melee. At least some good should come of that coin.”

Maffew sniffs and flicks a few beads on a strange device on the table, “I’d say… Ten to twenty percent would be respectable, Ser. To whom do you plan to dedicate the victory to?”

“What do you mean?”

“Well you are fighting for the Lady Alyssa’s hand in marriage correct?”

“Yes..?”

“Then perhaps you should dedicate the victory to the young lady. From everything we have been told she does think highly of the virtues of the Knight. Such fantastic stories will surely weigh well with her get you into her mind. Hm?”

“Or could do nothing,” you respond bitterly, feeling the taint of the Melee would taint your purpose.

“I would not suggest it Ser, at the very least dedicate it to the Faith if you must. I am sure they would enjoy to hear tell of the virtuous True Knight defeating the mad man and allowing the Melee to end honorably and without blood spillt by the victor. A victory by the hand of the Seven is a better way for this thing to be remembered, don’t you think?”

You sigh deeply, pinching the bridge of your nose as you sink further into your chair, “My armour has a spot of rust.”

Maffew stops and flicks the end of his quill, “Abrupt change of topic?”

“Rust spreads Maffew,” you say ignoring him outright, “I need new plate.”

“Well I do have the list that Lord Belmore’s mastersmith gave you,” he says rummaging through his desk, “It would be a better to have this done now rather than later. Seven above these prices though…”

“Go on,” you say waving your hand.

“Well the base cost of the armour is fifty gold dragons and would take four months. And then there are several… Additions. First the smith can have the armour colored during the forging process or polished to a mirror shine for another five, this would add another two weeks. Then there is adornments, apparently there is a craftsmen that is able to chase and emboss whatever it is you like into the armour. Words, designs, what have you, depending upon the type of work it could add two weeks to another month to it with prices ranging from five to fifteen dragons depending upon the sort of work. He would also do inlays, a golden griffon upon the chest is written as a suggestion here, with real gold and a ruby eye. Seven above. Another eight dragons and one week for that. And lastly there is a surcoat and gambeson, clothing worn beneath the armour, the cost for all of that is ten dragons but no additional time, Seven be good,” Maffew rubs his face, “And he says he can have this all done quicker should you provide the coin. Every twenty dragons will allow him to knock a month off of the worth time down to two months.”

“Hm.”

Maffew looks up from the letter, “This man is taking you for a ride Landon.”

“The man is providing a service I asked of him.”

To be fair the First is your only frontline foot, Landon relies on them a lot to get the job done in several respects. They are both good units for their respective purposes on the field.

>>2029338
Woah, woah, woah no that is not what we're talking about at all. Ignore this please.

That upgrade table is totally separate from what we're doing right now. Otherwise, I'd only be telling you guys that you had to spend 1 Wealth. Which is all that the upgrades on that table costs.

The Superior Arms are an upgrade that typically costs 2 Wealth and confers a +1 to Damage. It has been negotiated to be lower cost as you can see above. This comes from the Master Artisan holding in OOSP and has been built around by myself and Page.

That table is going to be brought up again during next House Fortunes and is what the Master-at-Arms bonus applies to. So please let's not confuse the two.

Time constraints is the big one, I think. I forget how soon all of these are but:
>We have a tourney in Newkeep coming up in three months.
>We will need to take care of the mountain fucks inhabiting Fossett Hall.
>We will need to besiege Crow's Barrens, possibly for a period of several months.

The longer the armor takes, the more events Landon will have to endure without all of its benefits.

that's gothic armor wardad. Maximilian has even more fluting. Gothic tends to use punch and file work, in place of inlay. Maximilian did use inlays, but never large ones like our options. A Milanese style would offer better surfaces for it, or the later styles used by demilancers

Hahaha Sure why the hell not. Make suggestions for what it should be. I'm thinking wings on the side, swept backward maybe sort of a griffon motif. Something that still falls under practical for Landon to use. Definitely a lot more lowkey than Ser Flament Brax's helmet.

I'm more worried about the siege than the tourney.

House Hersy is a bigger fish than House Blyth but not by much. I don't see them drawing too big a crowd, or much better combatants. We don't need the +1 Armor Rating that urgently. We'll be fighting in far less friendly conditions during the Crow's Barrens tourney though, and that's when I'd be more worried about it.

I don´t know about you, the benefits of the crest seem nice, but I don´t really picture Landon wearing a crest. Like, it seems too self-engrandizing to fit. The Mirror polish makes a better image in my head without any wings in the helm or so.

However, using as much as gold as we can to cut time seems good

Let's all just assume it is a lot more subtle and practical than what we're uses to seeing here. It's a fantasy world we don't need it to be perfectly in line with reality. It won't impede his ability to fight and doesn't contradict the character in a way that compromises the way we've been writing or playing him. Yeah?

That is 50+15+5+8+8+10=96, leaving you with 200 GD to spend.

Also, 4+1.5+.5+.25+.5 = 6 Months and 3 Weeks.

Now since the conversation of pushing down the time has gained some traction let's do a revote on that one since we're more aware of what's going on. A reminder you may only push this down to 2 Months, anything past that and you're getting shoddy work. Essentially what this payment is doing is allowing the mastersmith and the craftsman to dedicate more of their time, resources, and people to the project so that that they don't go bankrupt doing only a single order during those months. The quality of the armour will not be lessened if you push this even to the minimum time allowed.

that was a large part of the design. Helms like it are based on the automata fashion, where people made armor that looked like robots.

Yeah, I kind of figured gaining some perspective here would help that vote. Also I mess that up I already took out the 50 base cost for the armour so it should be 250 to spend, whatever. Alright so...

>176 GD spent
>2 Months and 3 Weeks

That means you will get it before the Hersy Tourney and likely a few other big events. You also have 120 GD left which Landon is going to keep in his personal purse for a later date, probably buying some horse armour or saving it up for something else like books, scrolls, etc. We'll figure it out when we get to it.

So we're done with that. Christ that was a process. My real life games have always played around with giving armour and clothing bonuses like that, to give the diplomancer of our group something to spend their cash on and the fighters more of a chance in some regards while bolstering different aspects in smaller ways. I've always felt that the clothing system is woefully underdeveloped so I tend to house rule that stuff. Sorry if that took a bit too long and was dry. We'll be moving on to war plans now.

“All of it, the best,” you say after a few moments of thought, “Mirror polish, emboss the full plate, the best undergarments, the crested helmet. Though of a more practical nature than those I’ve seen in Tourneys before. And I would like for it to be done within three months.”

Maffew ticks away at his bead device, fingering through coin and scribbling down sums and words before looking up at you, “I’ve never seen you actively spend so much money on yourself Landon.”

“Not without giving respectful tithe to the Seven, fifteen percent.”

“I am sure that is more than fair,” Maffew responds flicking a few more beads before continuing, “And the victory?”

“Dedicated to the fair Lady,” you say after a moment’s pause and thought.

“My brother retains a singer, I’ll see he puts it better than some might. Though, the Waynwoods are a House of tradition, we’ll play this carefully. Word will reach her ear but not in such a way as to annoy Lady Anya, hm?”

You nod, not entirely sure of Maffew’s plans but merely that he had them, “Send the coin to Lord Belmore at once. For the cavalry, war lances and side arms.”

“Ah yes, very well Ser, and a sword for yourself I’m sure?”

“Should it come about I will not look the gift horse in the mouth.”

“By the end of the month then, likely sooner given our shipment of grains and foods are to come at the end of next week. Hopefully Lord Belmore can procure the weapons in time. I am loathe to believe the Grey Lord does not have a mountain of them stashed away somewhere for just such an occasion.”

Maffew Shett continues through his papers and calculations as the two of you sit in relative silence. Maffew coughs and sniffles enough for you to believe he has caught a cold and attempt to remove yourself from the situation before you did too. There was a war council to attend regardless and you would be little help to Maffew’s balancing of the House’s finances and matters of coin. The great hall is thankfully empty barring those that you requested. Ser Trevor Trant, Ser Steffon Stonesifer, Wat the Scout, Ser Cullen Gauthier, Soren Fossett, and Warren Stone beside him a man you did not know.

“It is good to see you again Wat,” you say simply when you reach the table and wave them all leave to sit, “I assume you are here to report your progress.”

“Aye Ser, I be.”

“Good lad,” you say eyes unturnt from the maps laid out before you.

Trevor clears his throat and begins to move pieces about, “Asher Harp has his men positioned here, near midway up the mountain. They’ve been slowly chipping away at patrols and forward scouts since the last time we checked in on them.”

“Wat?”

“We’ves been keeping a low profile Ser, by Cap and Rivers command,” he says, “Heres and here are clear, we been hiding out in the hills and caves, yes we have. Ain’t nobody know where we is Cap been keeping us clear all the bad spots.”
>>
“Those are located here, and here,” Trevor says, placing two markers on the map, “The patrols are heavier there, but luckily they’ve been thinning out the past few weeks. Their Bear Warriors haven’t been out in strength for some time now. From what our forward scouts report the army from Fossett Hall shall be coming through the eastern valley into the forests and approaching here, up towards the Dawntower. A route right between the two safe zones, and our footing of the mountain where we can make base camp. So the plan is as such.”

Trevor picks up three pieces and places them on the map where base camp is moving the archer towards the middle of the mountain.

“Here is where Asher Harp will launch his ambush, where the mountain trail turns thin and the Moon Swallows are bunched together, three hundred odd men are much easier to deal with when we can catch them all in one net. From here the plan is to chase them back down the mountain. They will pass by safe zone number one where we will launch a second attack to keep them corralled and thin their numbers, from there subsequently a third attack from safe zone number two to do the same. Asher’s men will link up with each as they continue down the mountain to the waiting jaws of the last line. They will smash upon it, breaking like a wave upon stone, and the pursuing men will snuff them out, sandwiching them between us.”

“Like an overly large hammer and anvil maneuver,” you remark, “Are the men ready?”

“To ride at first light, Asher’s men know to gain position by mid-morning, the attack will happen by noon or just thereafter.”

“And then we kill them,” you hear a voice say, not recognizing it before you turn to see Soren Fossett with his hands clenched staring at the table.

“Respectfully Fossett,” Trevor says, “But you do not count among our numbers for this.”

Warren Stone gives your Knight-Commander a reproachful look, “These savages killed our kin and invaded our homeland. You will not deny our participation in this battle.”

“I do not recall asking for it,” Trevor responds with an annoyed tone, “This is House Grallner business not yours.”

“And retaking Fossett Hall is Fossett business, but Ser Landon has sworn to aid me,” Soren spits back, “I swore to help him in return. Myself, Ser Warren and Elys of Ellen Creek will all fight.”

Trevor sighs deeply and looks to you, “Do you want them Ser?”

In truth, you honestly could not say. In was dangerous to use men that you knew not the value of, how easily they would break or not, where their loyalties lied. How far their bravery could go. Not to mention what if Soren Fossett died here? The decision regarding the vow you made and the order of your liege lord still lingered largely upon your mind as in truth there wasn’t an answer for it that made you happy. Not yet. You had yet to consult others on the matter as well, fearing their responses.
>>
“We could use them,” Ser Cullen remarks, “Without their numbers we don’t have enough to man every safe zone without the use of the Garrison in the field. Something I doubt you wish to do Ser.”

“The men could serve at the foot of the hill,” Ser Steffon says, “But I would rather them be home and you use my cousin’s men in the past way you can.”

You sigh, rubbing the stubble upon your chin, tapping your fingers along the map as you made a decision.

“You all know what you’re suppose to do,” you say after giving everyone their standing orders to the best of your ability, “Debrief the men. Ready them for the day ahead. Wat make for the mountains and tell Ser Asher of what we spoke of here today. Is this understood?”

“Yes Ser, yes Ser,” he says with a few nods.

“Everyone? Is this understood?”

You receive affirmations about the table, even a less distasteful look from Soren Fossett. At least his men could prove useful now. Trevor, Steffon, and Cullen leave off not soon after and Wat confers with you half a moment longer to make sure he has everything memorized. Since his release from the cells and being pressed back into service he had found himself amongst the more senior and useful members of the ‘Bowmen, a man pulling himself up by sheer force of will. You had to respect that about the youth who could have died in that pit. Perhaps it was fate, the Seven yet had plans for him under your service.

Once the lad leaves off you are left in a room with Soren Fossett, Warren Stone, and Elys. You sniff, crossing your arms and standing to your full length, a towering height compared to the three of them, “Can I help you?” you ask gruffly.

Elys turns his head and shrugs his shoulders, Soren’s face turnt to frowns and distaste again but Stone speaks, an unfortunate decision, “We’re here to make our terms.”

You click your tongue, “The terms are made Warren Stone. I aid in retaking Fossett Hall. You aid me. As easy as that.” No it wasn’t…

“We only got food and supplies for two months,” Stone responds unpulsed, “When that’s gone if you haven’t upheld your end of the bargain, you paying our way Grallner until you do. And we expect proper rations.”

Your face darkens and you lean across the table, “You do not make demands of me, in my home, under my good graces. Soren Fossett’s men are being housed and warmed under my roof, that is good enough. Nowhere did I nor Soren make such an agreement, you have no legs to stand upon, Stone.”

The bastard licks his lips and backs off, “Two months,” he utters stalking out of the room Elys and Fossett in tow. Leave it to a bastard to have no sense of common courtesy you think to yourself, disgusted by the man’s mere presence. Hopefully he was a good fighter at least, tomorrow you would see.

---

[The 8th of Month II, 288AC - Mid-Day]

The men stand ready. The day is quiet, you can feel how tense the air is here. Parwyn Waynwood stands beside you, armed in his breastplate with a longsword and shield. Soren Fossett stands with you and Warren Stone, the former armed in chainmail with a bastard sword, the latter in rusted and pitted half plate. The Crossbowmen were posted up on either side of the foot of the hill, the Heavies were under your command, in a tightly locked shield wall. You take a deep breath and for a moment all is peaceful before the rush of noise comes down the Mountains.

The crash that had followed it was immensely, it sound of wood cracking and splintering. Like the trees themselves had uprooted and smashed against the clansmen. Their yells began to grow, Asher’s plan had worked, they had been cut off from ascending further into the mountains to link up with help from the Dawntower. And now they came scream back towards you, through mud, snow, and traps of their own people’s design.

Again the screams turn to those of death, no doubt the First and Ser Cullen’s men had launched the second attack. Slamming into the side of the fleeing Moon Swallows. You almost wish you had been there with them the way it sounded. Though the sounds grow louder they also grow softer, the death toll continuing to rise as your men executed their attacks perfectly.

The second of the traps springs, though they seem to have little effect from what you can tell. The first savage makes it down the hill, carrying a longbow. A flurry of crossbow bolts fly from both sides and meet their mark with deadly efficiency. You would have preferred them to wait until your command however.

Ser Trevor’s men are last. You can hear the gallops of the cavalrymen echoing in the mountains, the shattering of lances and death of more clansmen. Trevor was told to hold until last. So that the men might be able to form up behind him and smash the open side of savages. You do not know who the unlucky few who were within his warpath were, but from the sounds of it they too were equally cut down.

The last of the traps swing, close enough for you to know what they are. Pitfalls and spike traps, littered about in a deadly field. Your men had been instructed to pick carefully after this final trap lead by the ‘Bowmen, the fleeing Moon Swallows having no time to slow nor realize the certain death they were running into. Though the screams have grown closer they have only become a whisper of what they were. Silent prayer falls upon your lips and you take the forefront and center amongst the Fossett Heavy Infantry. Your shield comes up, sword upon its lip and your voice summons its strength, “READY!”

The first of the remaining Moon Swallows pour into the open grove where your men had set up, they stumble in like animals broken and bloody looking for reprieve and sanctuary from the Seven Hells you had just unleashed upon them. For the first time they see their attackers. The banners of House Grallner and House Fossett flying proudly above yourself. It emboldens them, thinking the only obstacle left is yourself. These men carry longbows again, and go to draw as they collect towards the bottom. Though it is too late before their attack is even launched. The crossbowmen unleash a flurry of bolts, driving into the remains of the Moon Swallow bowmen. They rout quickly, and you realize they have no commander, no one to pull them back from the brink.

The Bear Warriors are next, you can see them rushing through the crossbow bolts. Arrows and bolts sticking out of them, blood and wounds to their exposed bodies, but not stopping nor slowing them. It must have been what little remained of the woodwitch’s poultice, a gust of wind puts you down from them and you can smell the reek of rotten piss. Steeling yourself against it you issue command, “SHIELDS!” The clattering of steel upon steel brings the Fossett Heavy Infantry into a bulwark of metal and death, their armour complimented your own in such a way that they were as if Knights, but instead rather men within suits far beyond their own means. The crash that comes next hardly moves you. The Bear Warriors scream and tear and attempt to find purchase beyond your shield wall but to no avail. Their makeshift weapons and berserker attacks do little to the steel shields. You ground yourself against them, finding gain in the pebbles and stones that had been scattered beneath you prior to battle, your mind hums, warmth upon your temples spreading to your arms, legs and mouth as you roar your next command, “PUSH!”

With a heavy collective oomf the Heavies bounce the Bear Warriors off, their screaming berserker rage sending them right back into the maws of the Fossett men as you open up your ranks and the second row comes forward with blades and death. The attack is an absolute slaughter, they run into it with wild abandon and the second line cuts them down with ruthless efficiency before pulling their shields up as your line had to reform ranks. You watch as Parwyn Waynwood’s blade sinks into the shoulder of a Moon Swallow, his scream of elation ringing in your eye alongside the death wails of those around you. Finding yourself behind him you give him a good punch in the shoulder for a job well done before calling again, “PUSH!”

The Heavy Infantry again bounces what little remains of the Bear Warriors. You step forward this time and without so much as a pause thrust your sword through the first savage’s throat that you can see. Plunging into to hilt and twisting it at the end. He reeked of piss and shit, the tang of iron upon your lips from the blood that lingered in the air. You push him off with ease and press forward. A second Bear Warrior finding his death upon your blade as it lashes out after an easy sidestep out of his warpath, striking the back of his knees and cutting cleanly through tendon and flesh, he falls to the ground and attempts to crawl towards you but an axe buries itself in his head from a distance and you look up to see Soren Fossett tossing an axe in his hand and giving you a short look before burying it into a Moon Swallows forehead. The last man grips your shield as your eyes linger elsewhere for the half moment, and attempts to wrench it from your arm. You pull it close to your chest, bringing him with you, your head cracks against his own. Your head rings as the steel of your sallet crushes his nose and rolls off into his eye socket bursting the eye you see when he falls backwards, both bloody ruins with what remained of the eye hanging from his skull. He roars with rage but your sword ends him quickly, slashing him from navel to nose, his entrails falling to the ground below. You begin to fall back into position walking backwards with occasional looks back, you see Ser Trevor Trant, Ser Cullen Gauthier, and Ser Asher Harp all coming down from the mountain pass in neat ranks, their men unharmed and ready for the final attack. All that remained were the scattered and battered remnants of the archers and raiders. Your lips have not stopped silent prayer since the beginning barring orders and while they did not go idle they curled into the smallest of smiles knowing this to soon be done.

Ser Cullen Gauthier pulls his men forward. The cavalry lingering behind as a line before the Archers that take up position on the slight elevation, the crossbowmen have come out to line the walls of the death trap. The remaining Moon Swallows find themselves boxed in, panic begins to set in as the last of the Bear Warriors fall by your hand. Both sides continue to push forward, the savages attempting to break free on either side but only find themselves cut down.

“Forward!” you hear in a distinctively Rivermen accent, “AND PUSH!”

The First bounces the Moon Swallows off of their shields, flinging them towards you as they attempt to escape on the either side, but the Fossett men are ready. The Shield Wall opens and again the second line moving forward and slaughtering the remaining bowmen. Warren Stone takes the liberty of a few steps to equal your own, cutting down two of them before rejoining ranks. Parwyn remains behind this time, his pathway clear of the savages. The Fossett men reform ranks and press forward, your turn to push. Your voice grows in your throat and you call, “PUSH!”

The push comes a moment too late your realize. The Raiders have begun to attempt to break through the crossbowmen rather than the heavy shields of either side. Some manage to but are quickly cut down by short blades and stuffed with arrows or bolts before they can get too far. You even watch Ser Bryen Belmore break off his flank and chase down a Moon Swallow lancing his body to the ground before riding back. You can feel a moment of discontent, but pull the Fossett men back into order by stopping and linking shields once more. Ser Cullen takes this as a sign to try his side again and you hear him call, “Forward! AND PUSH!”

You watch Soren Fossett leading the charge, plunging his sword into one of the Raiders before hatcheting another across the field. The rest of the attack is but a blue of a memory, with the Fossett men soon raising their arms in victory and screaming and hollering like wild animals. You can see your own men not yet breaking rank, watching for the signal from their Captains, who watch for the Knight-Commanders, who watches for your own. Looking about the field you see nothing but death. And very few to none belong to yourself. It was a near perfect ambush, a battle so lopsided you couldn’t help but to think it was not over yet here you stood. Unharmed and unmatched once more. Even Parwyn had taken his first blood. You wave your fingers towards Trevor who calls to Ser Asher whose men scatter to the woods for clean up, to make sure no one truly escaped. The Cavalry rounds and rides out after in parties of ten while the First begins to pick through the remains of the Moon Swallows, thrusting their swords into those that yet still held onto life and collecting the bodies into a massive pile at the foot of the mountain. Collecting swords, bows, and what little valuables there had been as the Fossett men continue to celebrate unaware of what was going on around them.

You grind your back teeth and turn, joining up with your men in the final clean up of the day. It was a good victory, a well planned one at that. Your men deserved to celebrate it was true, but there would be time when this was done. Mounting up on Warrior you look up towards the peak of the Mountain and know. Know that the woodswitch is dead, that their reinforcements lie scattered and broken, that their traps mean nothing their plans gone to waste, that you were coming for the last of them, would cut through their ranks with righteous sword and purpose and when you found their chief upon the peak of the mountain, on the roof of the Dawntower watching as his people died in droves you would say, “Justice Soars.”

Alright so I see this already broken. Might need to cut back on the +1s. Either way, it worked out in your favor. The Grallner First Regiment, Whitestone Longbowmen, and Grallner Heavy Cavalry are all now Veterans. Shit son you scary. As are the Fossett Heavy Infantry and Fossett Crossbowmen.

We'll just chalk this one up to good planning and what has got to be the most perfect set of rolls I've ever seen. Every attack hit. Every ambush succeeded. It was an absolute slaughter. Landon is more of a commander than he gives himself credit for and he's surrounded himself with people that are likewise good and its starting to build this solid foundation.

However, with this comes a drawback, the food required for your troops is about to go up by 3 since your Power is now 33 with all of the promotions and misc Power you've been picking up. I believe your trade deals will cover it but I may be mistaken and you'll need to figure out a way to feed the men by month's end. We'll look into it more when I've the chance. But enjoy the victory. It was solid as all hell. Again that was the high risk high reward game you guys were playing, leaving Asher out in the field after the initial skirmishes, going after the Woodswitch, planning a massive ambush. Things could have gone horribly wrong from point 1, but they didn't. So good rolls, good job everyone.

I think it would be best to just go with "A unit that Destroyed another unit receives a +1 to their roll." Combine that with replacing the roll of a 1 on No Damage with "Intact" instead of "-1 Training."

Current Bi-Monthly Production & Trade:

>Production - Months III-IV, 288AC:
10 Raw Silver
5 Processed Silver

>Stockpile - Month III-IV, 288AC:
8 Raw Silver
4 Processed Silver
1 Foods

>Bimonthly Contracted Trade:
4 Processed Silver:16 Foods (House Belmore Trade) - 4 Years & 12 Months
3 Raw Silver:3 Faith Points (Faith Tithe) - Indefinite
1 Raw Silver:3 Foods (House Shett Trade) - 12 Months
2 Foods:1 Faith Point (Almshouse) - Indefinite | Begins Months V-VI

>Uncontracted Trade:
1 Processed Silver:6 Foods (House Belmore
1 Wealth & 2 Processed Silver:1 Superior Melee (House Bordain trade)

>Food Required - Month II, 288AC:
19/18

So let's see. Your monthly food costs now are 18 rather than 15. The Almshouse will be completed in Month IV and begin requiring Food for Faith Points. You'll have a leftover Food from Months III-IV and then one from Months V-VI so you'll have the 2 you need to provide the Almshouse with but after that you'll need to figure out a trade deal to get more Foods. Word to the wise it would be a good idea to regardless since you plan on some serious military expansion soon.

You have some time to figure it out. Maffew, when he isn't busy attempting to figure out what the Essosi merchant princes want and what Landon would be interested in trading from them, will look into finding more Food trade. Luxury goods are sort of eh for Landon which is what they primarily trade in so I haven't quite figured out what those contacts Nararo Aros put Maffew in with are going to offer.

>>2030886
I think that's a good call. Makes it a bit fairer and less ridiculous for an untouched unit. Will update appropriately. I suppose this is always something I've meant to figure out, and now that we're doing a high combat/warfare character I have the chance to tinker with it a touch and get it more within the realm of balanced. Man looking through all of these rolls again that was a ridiculous amount of good rolls, Landon's team is getting pretty good. One failed ambush and the whole thing would have become a disaster.

>>2030941
Well, Landon knows of three "major" groups of them. The Dawntower Ruins group which is 500 strong and very possibly is being led by the chieftain. There are the remnants of the Fossett Hall group which could be anywhere from 200-400 strong. And then there's a group to the west of the goat herder village, hiding away in a forest, that's mostly women and children from what Landon has been told.

So kind of sort of close? A few major battles left.
>>
>I'd argue we begin to aggressively colonise the foothills and dawn tower
You'd need to incentivize doing either. You'd need more Law, Population, and Lands. Most of the people are more than fine with staying in the mines, Whiteberth, and Whitestone Keep. There isn't any infrastructure out there, nowhere to live other than a half ruined Tower. It is the dead of winter and the very few people you could convince to move there would need to be protected and provided with the ability to grow through resources and Lands.

Your advisors would suggest against it, instead telling Landon to focus on Whiteberth and the fixing up the Dawntower during the winter and saving anything else until the Spring and Summer.

The reality of such a thing would be a lot of death from both exposure, starvation, and raids.

>>2031551
That battle would entirely come down to whether or not Brynden could get off enough arrows to put Landon down before he caught up to him. Once Landon catches Brynden it would be all over.

I might retool Brynden at some point if/when we ever come back to him, doing the fighting scenes with Landon has me considering a different direction for his general fighting style and the kit he uses. I should have kept his more sellsword-y style for the majority of his fights, bastard sword and a buckler seems more his speed in the melee and his brigandine rather than Half-Plate, in general, to allow his mobility and speed about the field to go unhampered. He should also do everything in his power to stay out of range and use his bow rather than anything else since it is his bread and butter. I think Brynden's preferred fighting styles should be: Mounted Archery>Mounted Melee>Footed Archery>Footed Melee and the way I write him should reflect that. And while Landon prefers to be in the thick of it while commanding, oftentimes either attaching himself to a unit or just commanding a core group with some standing orders handed out to his sub-commanders. Conversely, Brynden likes to fleet about the field on his horse, issuing commands here and there while relying only on Mason Flowers and Lucas Longwaters to deal with their respective areas of expertise.

I will say, I've been working on getting back to Malroy, this has been helping me a lot. Doing things differently with Landon has put a lot of inspiration in my head on how to do things better with Brynden and Malroy Quest.

Anyway, no bonus thread tonight, I'm thinking tomorrow will give me the chance to do it but no promises. I will be around in the thread for questions, thoughts, concerns, etc.

In other news, all of the Spreadsheets are updated. The Power Holdings, Grallner House Sheet, and Landon/Parwyn character sheets are all updated to this thread. I still need to find a good place for the food and trade things. Maybe I'll make them their own spreadsheet some day.

Thanks. Talking to another QM has given me the perspective that Landon might be fucking broken so any characters not specifically built for fighting like Landon probably doesn't stand a chance. I'll need to do character building on my own.

>>2033017
That is actually a really good question.

If we're talking warfare... In the Vale, Grallner and Harrock would duke it out first before Bordain, the Company, and his bannermen came down and crushed them both. Even splitting his time between a two front war he'd still have the men with the experience to pummel them. Karban would be late to the party being all the way in the Arbor, as would Malroy considering he doesn't have the ships or location. Now while Karban was fabulously wealthy his army wasn't particularly large, mostly focused on supplementing Lord Redwyne's fleet and troops. He wouldn't last very long against Bordain or Malroy even with superiority on the waves.

I think in the end the war would come down to Bordain and Malroy. With the former has a clear advantage with all of his upgrades, engineers, siege engines, and experience. Obvious victory goes to Bordain.

In terms of economic might and political influence, it might depend on time, allegiances, and situation. Obviously, Harrock and Grallner are out from the gate, neither has clot comparable to the others. Malroy has their horses and are a powerful Valyrian House in the heart of the Crownlands with history, a key bridge crossing and perhaps the most domains of any Lord. Karban could buy the fucking Arbor if he wanted to with his wine production and his relationship to Lord Redwyne a powerful Lord gives him some legs to stand on, how far his influence goes depends upon his stance during the Rebellion (which I've always thought as him being loyal like the rest of the Reach) and whether or not he married Paxter's sister. Bordain has about as many weapons and powerful friends and allies in the upper crust that anyone that even dreamed of fucking with him would need to do it far away from his eyes so as to catch him unawares.
>>
If we're talking post Rebellion? Bordain easily.
Greyjoy Rebellion? Karban.
Closer to the books? Malroy.
During the books? Toss up.
And after that it all depends upon who wins and who sides with who. But it is very likely that Bordain dies if the Targaryens return and win and Malroy could come up big during that.

It all really depends upon particular scenarios I suppose. Not to mention alliances and marriages and enemies, etc., etc., fucking etc. It's ASoIaF, there is so much there that has to be taken into account that it's almost impossible to give a definite answer. Though I think objectively Karban had the most Influence and Wealth to throw around despite being the Bannerman of a Bannerman.

>>2033023
It would have to be traded at the moment. The Grallner lands have no way to produce Foods on their own. To repeat, your only Domain already has an Estate Holding, the Silver Mine. You are unable to purchase a Fishery, Food Agriculture, Apriary, etc. because of this. The only way to have any food production is to purchase the goat herder domain to the north for 10 Lands, and purchase the Animal Husbandry Estate Holding for 10 Wealth. That's it.

>>2033117
I believe I've made it very clear that they are being used to gain titles, the six that make up those bestowed upon Lords/Knights for their devotion to the Faith and the sort of things they do in the name of the Faith, donations, exalting the Seven, hiring Septons/holy men/Septas and building Chapels and Sept, etc. Which is a primary concern for the Faith based character that Landon is.

Each tier comes with a Faith blessed title, which is a rare thing amongst Westerosi Lords. A piece of "parade armour" that there are only 3 complete sets of in the whole of Westeros. And come with benefits, such as the Faith extending a line of credit, Destiny Points, bonuses to dealing with people of the Faith, etc. These things fuel into Landon's core personality traits, namely Fame, Pious, and Ambitious. They have value in the sense that it pushes Landon to continue in his strides towards completing his goals with a tangible reward that he can use to help better himself in combat, social encounters, etc.

He's not broken, he's just combat built. Anyone who is not likewise built is a fucking fool to fight us in open melee. There's a reason assassinations, poisonings and getting slammed via numbers is a thing.

Landon's just reasonably optimized. There's nothing broken about him at all.

>>

I dont necessarily see landon as broken, he is just very good at combat.

outside of combat he struggles and can easily be beaten.

What he does have on his side is luck.

You yourself pointed out that the ambush could have been a giant disaster.

honestly the goat village was a great idea, im not sure why we chose to let the discounts go.
>>
>>2033193
>Landon might be fucking broken
Landon is just a bit gamey, but that is what you get when you play a game (especially with anons online). We're a very good fighter, yes, but we're pretty bad at other stuff. The point of building our character this way does kind of disappear if suddenly everyone and their mum are great fighters too, which I'm sure you can find a balance in but do I will point out anyway.

Conclusion is I have no solution really
>>
>>2034211
>if suddenly everyone and their mum are great fighters too

Yeah that would suck

>just like how Brynden was great at archery than literally who former lover dude shows up and is better

>just like how Brynden was great at archery than literally who former lover dude shows up and is better

Dont look at me. I suggested we arranged he ran into some questionable characters and got the shit beat out of him.
>>
>>2034313
Basically, yes. I forgot about that incident.
What I mean is just also that melees aren't that important after the Waynewood thing, so I guess Daddy will have at least one equal person to us there, but after that if we just keep attending small-time melees around the vale for fun there should honestly be no good reason for us not to steamroll everyone. Just don't have melees every month.
>>
>>2034325
I have made two knights for Father to use in tourneys that are pretty good fighters.
>>
>>2034313
I still dont get why everyone got salty over that. It was a major Tourney in Highgarden of course there is going to be competition, expecting otherwise is stupid and Brynden can't possibly know everyone as good with a bow as him. Hell we shouldn't have even beat Jahlabhar Xho in Kings Landing. He had a better dice pool and a better bow. It was a statistical anomaly we won.

Getting mad over that or Landon having competition later on is childish and petty. Father has never played to power fantasies there is always a bigger fish.
>>
>>2034342
>Getting mad over that or Landon having competition later on is childish and petty.
Look, I understand that there has to be a challenge, but then the mistake was made at character creation where we were allowed to make such a strong fighter. Punishing the players for playing well is unfair.
Now, of course we're not the best fighter in the whole wide world, I'd indeed accept us meeting many equals in a tourney in King's Landing, or maybe meeting some other great fighters at a melee at the Arryn place. There is no reason for another fighter as good as us, which is a rare occurrence, showing up to every little melee we go to just because we happen to be strong.

>>2034328
That's fine, Dad asked us to do that and listening to him is only kind.
>>
>>2034342
I don't give a shit about him being better or winning, it's just that the whole former lover of our wife thing was incredibly contrived and didn't serve any real purpose. He was a literally who, which makes sense given there aren't that many named archers in ASOIAF lore.

I just mentioned him because it was a similar instance to what anon was worried about.
>>
Having read into it, I think I understand the statement of Landon being broken. At the same time, I don't think it's the biggest issue in the world.

Once Landon acquires the armor he has just ordered, his Combat Defense will be 20 and his Armor Rating will be 12.

This is a big deal. Let's look at a description of what it means to have a Rank 3 ability.

>A cut above the common person, having rank 3 in an ability means you have a special knack and find tasks related to the ability to be far easier than other folks do. Talented can also imply a minimum amount of training, such as a few hours put in with the practice sword or having ridden a horse a few times in your life. Generally, rank 3 gives you just enough experience to be dangerous.

The highest a person with Rank 3 can roll is 18. It is impossible for a person with Fighting 3, an above average fighter, to hit Landon, let alone hurt him.

Let's have a look at the description of what it means to have a Rank 4 ability.

>At rank 4, you have trained extensively in the ability, combining yournatural talents with extensive training. Your skill in this ability far exceeds that of the average individual, and you can confidently tackle challenging tasks without trouble and, with a little luck, can pull off some amazing stunts.

The highest a person with Rank 4 can roll is 24. A well-trained fighter with Fighting 4 can score a hit against Landon, but all they can get is one degree of success. You get another degree of success with every additional multiple of five you roll above the target number and a character with Fighting 4 cannot roll 25. In order for a Fighting 4 character to deal damage to Landon after hitting him for one degree of success, they would need to deal 13 damage or more per degree of success. It is almost impossible to build a character capable of dealing that much damage in this system.

Let's have a look at the description of what it means to have a Rank 5 ability.

>Intensive training coupled with natural talent places you far above the common man. In fact, people with rank 5 are often the best at what they do in many areas, having surpassed their peers in their craft.

The highest a person with Rank 5 can roll is 30. Now a character with Fighting 5 can hit Landon for one degree of success, two degrees of success or even three degrees of success if they roll a 30. In order to get past the Armor Rating of 12, a character would need to do 7 or more damage per degree of success on two degrees of success or 5 or more damage per degree of success on three degrees of success. Vyell was able to do this with a greatsword that dealt 8 damage per degree; a two-handed weapon that left him vulnerable.

This is where I point out that in addition to being so hard to hurt, Landon also rolls 5D+3B and deals 6 damage per degree. This means that unless he comes up an opponent that's as hard to hurt as he is, he will almost always whittle them down before they can inflict any significant damage.
>>
>>2034420
They part where Wardad messed up is the act our combat defense did not drop with our armor.
>>
>>2034420
I'm not a HEMA expert, but afaik in good armour you can only really be hurt when hit with either a heavy blunt weapon or when a sharp weapon hits one of the spots where your armour connects. It's not a stretch to say that Landon knows how to guard these spots properly, so in historical terms that sounds about right to me, but in game terms I agree it is a bit silly. Still I know no easy solution to fix a good character build performing well.
>>
My conclusion is that Landon might occasionally be hurt by characters with Fighting 5 that also have Athletics 5 and a two-handed weapon. However, due to not having shields, these characters tend to be easy for Landon to hit and strike down before they can do too much damage to him. Simply put, Fighting 5 characters can dent him but I do not think that they can damage him.

Let's have a look at the description of what it means to have a Rank 5 ability.

>By rank 6, you are considered one of the best in the world at what you do. People seek you out to learn, to improve their training, or to simply meet you. Only a rare few individuals attain rank 6 in any ability, much less two or more.

Without going into detail, I think a character with Fighting 6 would challenge Landon and possibly defeat him. This is what it would take to pose a threat to the character we have built; one of the best fighters in the world.

>tl;dr
Characters that are above average combatants or worse cannot even get past Landon's shield. Characters that are well-trained, highly competent fighters can strike a hit on Landon but cannot hope to damage him. Characters that have gone through intensive training and possess a great deal of natural talent are able to harm Landon with the right weaponry, but this weaponry usually leaves them with low Combat Defense making them easy for Landon to eliminate before they can do too much damage. Only the world's best are able to genuinely challenge Landon.

At the same time however, this isn't such a big deal. Landon has weaknesses in other areas. Being an unstoppable juggernaut in single combat is meaningless in warfare, in court or in intrigue. We shouldn't regularly encounter anyone that is capable of challenging Landon in single combat but at the same time, I would expect to be challenged eventually. There are likely to be a couple of encounters where there is a chance of Landon being defeated and if he is, do not rage. Simply enjoy his almost effortless victories until we get to that point.

>>2034444
>>2034424
I don't think that it's so bad. It works for a setting that puts so much emphasis on idealized medieval combat. Knights in plate armor should come across as unstoppable juggernauts without equal on the battlefield. So no, Warrior didn't mess up at all. He does a great job at making Landon come across as a holy warrior with impenetrable defenses, both in writing and in stats.

I simply do not envy him when it comes to building a character that might challenge Landon in single combat. It will be a difficult task and when it does happen, I ask that we try to keep ourselves from crying foul. Lyn Corbray, for example, is almost certainly better than Landon at swordplay. I can't imagine any other knights in the Vale that might be able to stand up to the shining star of Grallner though.
>>
>>2034447
>I ask that we try to keep ourselves from crying foul.
I think it depends on the way in which this is done, and again I think that Dad can handle this, but he does need to be cautious that they are at least people we have heard of before (if they're as good as us, everyone attending the melee will know they are a great fighter and so should we/Landon) and not just random folks.
I, personally, am looking forward to rolling insanely well against our equal and handily beating them, like Malroy did when shooting a bow.
>>
Any weapons that can penetrate Landon's armor?

Like a mace, axe or halberd?
>>
>>2035543
The big, brutal weapons that do stupendous amounts of damage are:
>Longaxe
>Flail
>Greatsword
>Pole-Axe
>War Lance

All of those do Athletics + 3, except for the War Lance which does Animal Handling + 4. In addition to that, they are all Powerful, which means you can add your Strength specialty on to the attacks as well.

In addition, you've got some Piercing weapons which ignore certain amounts of armor on a successful hit and you've got some Shattering weapons which destroy certain amounts of armor on two or more degrees of success.

Someone specialized in using the above weapons could be expected to deal 10-12 damage per degree of success. However, they're bulky two-handed weapons, with all of them except for the greatsword being difficult to wield. This means that it is be more difficult for them enough degrees of success to damage Landon and they don't have room to carry a shield or anything else to bolster their defenses. Shields are important. Remember that almost a half of land's Combat Defense comes from his tower shield.
>>
>>2035755
What does warhammer do?
>>
>>2035755
So basically the archetypes that are major threats to us
>Our nemesis - Essentially anyone built just like Landon but better
>Charging knights - War lances are the most damaging weapon possible, they can impale us and they are one-handed so said knight can just as easily equal our defense with a tower shield. They become SO much more terrifying with the three spear fighter traits which let them attack again on a miss, ignore 2 points of armour and attack from outside our range.
>Massive Mountain-like bruisers - They get the +3 dmg weapons (or a shattering/staggering bludgeon), may be able to attack from outside our range and can wield a tower shield too
>Furious berserkers with a bit of skill - They get an extra attack every time with injure them, fight past death and can drop 2 dice to get +4 dmg
>Snipers - Ranged weapons in GoT are brutal, high dmg, powerful, penetrating combined with the ability to attack from far outside our range. Don't even need traits to be threatening but it's worse if they are.
>Weapon specialists - Most of the weapon specific traits can build to pretty nasty opponents for us. Spear fighter might be the worst but Axe Fighter and Bludgeon Fighter look nasty too. I don't know if a Syrio Forell style character could be made that would threaten us but it'd be pretty cool if it could be.
>Brawlers - We can't use our longsword if we've been grabbed and we also take -5 to our Combat Defense
>Groups of decently skilled soldiers with reach weapons assisting each other to stack successes
>People using the advanced combat actions intelligently. Cautious Attack to buff their Combat Defense, Disarm/Knockout/Distract to target our passive Fighting/Endurance/Will and ignore our insane Combat Defense
>Ambushes when we're not wearing our armour etc
>Siege weapons and wildfire. Scorpions deal 10 dmg ignoring armour. Yes, I am acknowledging that Landon is badass enough that siege weapons are a viable response.

Of course most (but not all) of these threats require our opponents to be significantly above average in skills and number of traits. But that makes sense, we're significantly above average in traits and skills. I'll admit well-built combat characters in GoT can easily become far beyond the reach of normal foot soldiers (which strips some of the drama from most combat scenes) but the bigger problem in my mind is how easy it is to buiild someone who wipes the floor with statted Kingsguard and only challenged by Jaime or the Mountain

>>2036086
Warhammer is Dmg=Athletics but Powerful (Add Str B dice to Dmg), Shattering 2 (2 degrees of success and you reduce 2 from opponents Armour Rating permanently). Also Two-handed (unless you're Massive), Slow (penalty to split attacks between multiple foes) and Bulky (slows your walking/runnning speed).
A maul is Dmg=Athletics+1, Bulky Slow, Shattering 1, Two-handed and Staggering (get two degrees and you can sacrifice one of them to prevent opponent taking a Greater Action next round).

>>
>>2037316
If we had a son, wouldn´t telling us make her an honest person? That doesn´t looks as manipulative to me. And it is obvious that they were really into one another five years ago.

I know that Father has kind of hinted that she is well-versed at intrigue, but think about this: In Revenge and Gold, the first time we met Obella she tried to get some info from us. And we didn´t go into paranoia about how she was a schemer.

Relax, let´s see how she is and then let´s decide. We haven´t seen a bit of her character.

It's four or so years.

A person can be in love and manipulative at the same time. The feelings between Cassondra and Landon are genuine but at the same time, I think it would be a toxic and tragic romance, with her doing a lot of questionable things and pushing Landon to do a lot of questionable things for the sake of their romance and her son, whether it's his or not.

pretty much this,

the way I see it Benedar was the one who really fucked everything over by marrying her off to his 60 year old buddy.

once that shit happened she tried to get Landon to come with her so their relationship could continue and he said no.

what was she supposed to do? Tell everyone involved her son was a bastard? hell Benedar might just have had Landon killed and done as he pleased anyway.

this is a game of thrones quest. These types of situations are all too common. Cass i think deserves at least a chance to speak for herself and gain a voice as a character before anons decide that shes some horrible cunt.
>>
>>2039339
I have no doubt that she is both.
>>
>>2039476
In short. Wow complex characters with different motivations and personalities than your usual waifu bait. What a concept!

I think it's hysterical that people are willing to write Cas off but are perfectly fine with Alys, a character we know even less about.
>>
>>2039517
One is a character that Landon has prior history with suddenly seeking to find her way back into his life the moment he starts being successful again, despite the fact that their reunion would stir up a great deal of trouble, using a child that may or may not be Landon's as leverage.

The other is a woman we do not know but who might be able to elevate the Grallner family into the upper echelons of the Vale, with no potential controversy associated with her.
>>
>>2039517
Hey. I am one of the first to believe she is a schemer and will try to push Landon up and use him. That is exactly why i want them together. I believe it would make for a great story and character interaction.
>>
>>2039584
I read that way differently. Judging from the supposed letters over the years and Cass waiting around in Strong Song for awhile hoping Landon would show up. I don't think she ever wanted to leave Landon's life, things just happened.

Either way, I'd argue a marriage to her is as equally prestigious as the one to Waynwood. She is the daughter of our liegelord.
>>
>>2039584
Firstly she's been trying to get in contact with him well before now. There has been a myriad of messages and "gifts" that Landon ignored because he could not read. In fact it's likely that losing her is what caused his demotion to continue to learn reading, as it would only bring him pain in his mind. hell her agent contacted us during the big shake up with Bendar and she had NO WAY of knowing we'd be made KC givent eh state of our lands. (assuming she has people watching our lands for her.)

>>2039476
Usually you have to pay a dowry to marry off a daughter to anyone of note. Another lord basically went up to Bendar and said "Take my money for your daughter" which given the volume spent was too good for him to pass up, not counting the positioning it gave him.

>>2039713
Pretty much this she still loves him and pursues him, but she's married so he turns her away.

Furthermore turning down a castle and lands? Benedar knows we are ambitious, If we did that he would figure out why in short order then shit hits the fan.
>>
>>2039974
Think she will hold a grudge against him for not following her and having a affair.
>>
>>2041419
Probably not a grudge perse' but one of those things she'll try to use to browbeat us.
>>
>>2039974
there were a LOT more reasons for benedar to marry cass to ossifer.

he and ossifer were good friends, ossifer needed an heir, belmore women are known to be fertile, benedar needed contacts in that area, ossifer produces many of the type of luxury goods Benedar enjoys, AND he offered Benedar a substantial sum of coin.

there was no chance he would refuse regardless of what cass wanted.

and even if she had, as i suspect, told benedar she was already pregnant he had all the leverage he could ever need to force her to remain silent of the matter.

including killing her lover.

so at that point there was no way she could marry landon, so she went for the next best thing. Landon for his part was unwilling to do that, especially since ossifer held such renown for him. so when Benedar offered him Whitestone it was an easy decision.

the question remains whether or not Benedar /knew/.

I think Bordain's political influence is a little over-estimated in this assessment. Sure, he knows plenty of people who are, and will one day be, powerful, but the majority of the them have made it clear they see him as 'useful', not necessary.

The King got tanked at his wedding and gave him some cash to seem generous and cool and shit.

Lord Arryn has hosted him a few times, and had some conversations with him.

Petyr Baelish has tried to make himself richer USING Bordain.

Tywin has spoken some very dangerous words with Bordain, but presumably has something planned should Bordain try and turn against him.

Like, sure, Bordain's been near a lot of the key players, and he's a scary dude, but so's Ser Ilyn Payne.

Bordain's strength is predicated on his strength. If one of the other contenders can hit him hard enough early on, it could cause him to find himself all alone.
