You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

You were back on the Pacifica, having already been a couple of days since the battle, or more accurately a skirmish, against a rather sizeable Zentradi force venturing too close to NUNS space. Right now, it was a debriefing between all of the relevant participants regarding the battle. Of course, there was the ship's CAG, Kellerman, and Karla. Closer to your side of the table was Lara and Amy, and a blonde, micronized Zentradi you didn't immediately recognize.

The only odd thing was the absence of Dorothea, who was supposed to be presiding over this debriefing. It was still a bit early before the proceedings were to begin, but you'd figured someone like would here before all of you.

It was odd, not seeing Dorothea here. You get up from your seat, intending to go look for her.

"What are you doing, Captain?" Kellerman asks.

"Ah, just gonna take a quick piss, that's all." You shrug. "Got a problem with that?"

"Nah, we're just supposed to be starting soon." Kellerman shrugs and checks his watch. "Just be sure to get back quick."

"No problem, sir."

"And if you happen to see the Admiral along the way, just remind her we've still got this debriefing thing." Kellerman continues.

You wonder if the CAG actually knew something, or whether he was just thinking ahead. However, a quick scan of his expression revealed nothing.

"Hope it ain't number two!" Lara chuckles as she playfully slaps you on the buttocks as you pass by her.

You only reply with an annoyed grunt before exiting the meeting room.

Now, where would you be able to find Dorothea? The most likely place would be her office, but surely she must have left it by now? She also could have stopped by the hangar to inspect the Valkyries.

You greatest, though least likely, fear was that maybe she had actually overslept or something. It was rather early in Earth Universal Time, after all...

The door immediately slides open, to reveal a slightly confused looking Dorothea, thankfully in her uniform. She blinks for a second as her eyes try to recognize you.

"Captain?"

"Admiral." You nod. "You are aware that we have a debriefing soon?"

"I haven't forgotten." Dorothea almost seems to pout as she walks past you and into the hall, the doors to her quarters sliding shut as she leaves. "Well then? Let's get going."

You sort of get the feeling that Dorothea was being a bit too brusque.

"Admiral, don't tell me you've been hitting the rum." You narrow your eyes.

To her credit, Dorothea doesn't even break stride or pause, continuing to keep pace to reach the meeting room. However, she does shoot you a cautious look.

"I would be careful of how you would speak to your Admiral, Captain." She says quietly. "Especially when we're both on duty."

"I was under the impression that officers shouldn't be drinking on duty, either." You point out.

"Just a bit of a leftover from last night." Dorothea huffs. "I always have a little rum when I... reminisce. Either way, I'm perfectly sober and capable of performing my duty, unless you want to challenge that, too."

"Not at all, Admiral." You respond, deciding stick to being formal.

"Good." She grunts, her mood slightly soured.

"Do you want me to get you a cup of coffee?" You ask.

Dorothea raises an eyebrow, as you had said something patently offensive to her and you realize your mistake just a tad too late.

"Are you seriously suggesting coffee to a British officer?" Dorothea tuts.

"Sorry, Admiral. Tea, I mean." You correct yourself.

"Hmmm, no time for it now. We're already cutting it close as it is." Dorothea shakes her head and then smiles slightly. "I wouldn't be opposed to some tea time afterwards though..."

Before you can ask anything else, though, you're already at the briefing room. Dorothea finally pauses at the door, takes a deep breath, adjusts her uniform to make sure it's straightened out, and finally marches in. You wait a second or two before following her in.

"It's good to see everybody here." Dorothea says curtly as she sits in her reserved seat. "Karla, I hope your report is complete."

"It is." Karla nods with a smile. "Would you like me to recite the data?"

"Please do."

"Okay!" Karla stands up and clears her throat. "As all of you have figured now, our little 'test run' was an unqualified success!"

She then activates a holoprojector, showing all sorts of graphs, numbers, and other confusing infographics.

"While Amy's fold resonance output was a bit lower than we were hoping, it was still showing a demonstrable effect on Zentradi morale and operations. We immediately noticed a sharp decrease in enemy combat efficiency of 37%."

"It was like shooting fish in a barrel." Kellerman nods. "Their fighter screen didn't stand a chance."

"Yet this was only against the smallest fraction of their overall forces." Dorothea narrows her eyes. "Can Amy's voice carry over to a full Zentradi battlefleet? Much less three?"

"We're... not quite confident she's at that stage yet." Karla admits in the most diplomatic way possible. "BUT, if we can promote further growth in her fold resonance coefficient, we may be on the right track!"

"What is this fold resonance stuff you keep talking about?" Lara asks.

"Yeah, it sounds like you're just making shit up." Amy grunts, arms crossed.

"Oh dear, do I have to explain this all again...?" Karla sighs.

"Basically, it's a person's ability to manipulate fold space." You speak up as you lean back in your seat. "This seemed to be a technology that ancient alien civilizations like the Protoculture mastered, and was apparently originally some method of control they used to keep other species in line."

"Oh, you've done your homework!" Karla claps. "That's exactly it! All humans are connected to fold space in some way, but 99.9% of the population cannot perceive nor manipulate it. But there are those rare few that can..."

"Like Amy." Dorothea finishes. "But you said something about her resonance being low?"

"Yes, well, being able to manipulate fold space is not black and white. There's different measures of strength. A person with weak fold resonance can only really affect a few people at a time, while those with very high resonance can possibly influence the entire galaxy if they wanted. I think we all know that the Brisingr Incident proved that possibility."

"I remember." Dorothea scowls.

"So how are we supposed to get it higher?" Lara asks.

"Generally, fold resonance is deeply linked with the subject's emotional state." Karla eyes Amy. "If the singer isn't emotionally invested or excited, their song naturally isn't as powerful. It's like how bad acting brings down the quality of a film."

"And I suppose you have a plan on how to deal with this." Dorothea looks to Karla.

"Oh, we'd prefer to stay hands off, but there are a few contingencies in place if we have to execute them." Karla shrugs.

"Greeeaaaat." Amy grunts, still not enthused.

"I think I got a better idea of what the kid likes." You grunt. "You leave her to me."

"Well, if you're offering..." Karla gives a sly grin. "I don't have any objections, do you, Admiral?"

"None." Dorothea shakes her head.

"Then it's settled!" Karla nods rapidly.

Shit, that sent a bit too smoothly. Did that spook plan this? Were you one of her "contingency plans?"

Well, it was too late to wonder about it now. You were committed.

"Aw yeah!" Lara fist pumps. "We can all hang out and do all sorts of cool shit together! It'll be great!"

"Well, I look forward to the fruits of your labor, Captain." Dorothea smiles slightly before turning to Kellerman. "What's your opinion of the Zentradi combat capability? Would it be feasible to wage a preemptive campaign against them?"

"Hmmm, that's a tricky question." Kellerman frowns. "As long as we got our star idol here, she'll definitely be a huge force multiplier, but our own fleet is stretched thin as it is manning the line. Any sort of campaign means we go in under strength or we pull ships from the defense fleets."

"Not an ideal situation." Dorothea sighs.

"Or we can hope that Earth actually sends in those reinforcements they promised." Kellerman continues. "But who knows how long that'll take. By that point the one Zentradi fleets could have finally beaten out the other two and seize that Protoculture facility the bigwigs want so bad. Or even worse, we get some hotshot Zentradi warlord that manages to unite the three fleets together."

"Something like that happening is incredibly rare." Dorothea points out.

"But not unprecedented." Karla reminds everyone.

"Well whatever, not like I have a say in how shit is run." Amy grunts.

Looking at Dorothea's expression, you could tell that she was really in a bind here, caught between her duty to protect the colonies and her desire to eliminate the Zentradi as a threat.

"Well, if you want my opinion, I think it's best we stay on the defensive." You shrug. "Do the occasional cross border raid or recon in force until we're in a better position to really hit back."

"Hah, it sounds like you've gotten everything planned out already." The Meltrandi finally speaks with a smile. However, you unfortunately find it difficult to keep your eyes on her face.

"I'm sorry, Miss...?"

"Lieutenant Julie Abigny!" The Meltrandi winks at you. "I lead the fleet's Meltrandi contingent. Think of us as a 'special use' unit!"

"She definitely wants to be used in a special way." You hear Lara quietly mutter behind you.

"Lieutenant." Dorothea coughs to try and defuse the situation. "As our resident Zentradi representative, what's your take on this?"

"I think our newcomer here has the right idea!" Julie nods. "Zentradi respond to aggression with aggression, and if they see a massive NUNS fleet driving straight into their territory, that gives them all the more reason to prioritize dealing with us, or even worse, setting aside their differences and uniting against us to defeat a common enemy."

"What about limited offensives?" Dorothea raises an eyebrow.

"As long as we don't take and hold significant amounts of territory, I think they'll just consider it a minor nuisance." Julie explains.

"Then we'll will postpone offensive operations for the time being." The Admiral concludes. "All of you are dismissed."

"Finally!" Amy rolls her eyes and hops out of her seat, quickly shuffling off.

"Sweet!" Lara pats you on the shoulder. "Was gonna do a bit of tuning on my Valk. Wanna come with?"

"Or how about a drink with me~?" Julie asks seductively as she saunters up behind you. "We have to introduce ourselves in a more proper fashion, after all!"

"Yeah, I'm sure you do." Lara scowls.

You feel like you're starting to get stuck in a dangerous situation now.

"Sorry ladies, I've got other plans." You try to put up a confident face as you try to extricate yourself from the two pilots. "I'll have to take a rain check on those."

Before either Lara or Julie could protest, you quickly make your escape, dashing out the door. You pass by Kellerman, you shakes his head with an amused smile.

In the relative safety of the hallway, you can afford to take a second to breathe. It's then that you just manage to catch Amy turning a corner further down the hall.

Well, you know that Dorothea's invitation was probably supposed to be private, between the two of you only, but this also seemed like an equally good chance to get Amy and Dorothea on better terms with each other.

You decide to keep tea time just between you and Dorothea. You can try to mend fences between her and Amy some other time.

Conveniently enough, Dorothea is next to exit the briefing room and pauses when she sees you.

"If memory serves me right, you invited me out to tea." You remind her.

"I did, didn't I?" Dorothea chuckles. "I suppose I can't back out of a promise..."

The two of you head to Dorothea's office, where in addition to her rather impressive rum locker, she had a fully stocked tea station as well. The British certainly did take their tea seriously.

"So would you prefer tea or coffee?" Dorothea asks as she opens the little cabinet, showing off a massive collection of various teas and coffees. "I do keep some coffee around for guests."

"Tea will do." You say.

"Ah, that makes things simpler then." Dorothea nods. "Any specific type?"

"Um, whatever you're having." You respond weakly, betraying your relative ignorance on the finer points of tea.

"I see, I see." Dorothea smiles as she gets to work.

With the clinking of porcelain and the bubbling of steaming hot water, Dorothea quickly and efficiently prepares a pot of tea, pouring out two cups for the each of you.

The rich aroma of the tea reaches your nostrils, stimulating them as effectively as the brute force of coffee.

"So..." Dorothea clutches her cup with both hands, waiting for her tea to cool a bit.

"So..." You respond, doing the same.

"I've been meaning to ask you some time ago, but what happened in the debriefing really reminded me." Dorothea locks her eyes with yours. "You effectively volunteered to be Amy's guardian, did you realize that?"

"Yeah." You nod. "Pretty sure I was already doing that job from the get go."

"Then I suppose you'll understand why I'm asking this." Dorothea takes a deep breath. "What is Amy to you? Who do you see her as...?"

Huh... that was an interesting question.

"Well, truth be told, she kinda reminds me of myself when I was a kid." You smile warmly. "No one was around to look after me then, so I want to make sure the same doesn't happen to Amy."

"How altruistic." Dorothea smiles as she takes the first sip of her tea. "But that doesn't fully answer my question.

"Well, this may sound silly." You take a sip from your own tea, jolting a bit from the unexpected taste. "But Amy also kinda feels like she's the little sister I never had."

"Ah." Dorothea nods, seemingly relieved. "That makes sense."

You feel the conversation turning to you, now.

"So, Admiral." You take another sip of the tea. You think the taste was slowly growing on you. "I've been wondering. Do you have any family around?"

"Ah, well..." Dorothea looks down at her tea, a somewhat somber expression on her face. "I'm afraid not. I was born an only child and both my parents passed away quite some time ago."

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be, none of it was your fault or anything." Dorothea insists. "Though from what I've been able to glean, the situation is the same for you...?"

"Nah, my folks are still alive and kicking." You point out. "But yeah, never really had a chance to catch up with them ever since I joined up."

"I see. That's quite fortunate of you." Dorothea nods as she continues to sip at her tea.

"To tell the truth, all I really know is that they're still back on Earth. Haven't seen them since I shipped out."

"Perhaps you should change that." Dorothea observes.

"Yeah, maybe I should." You nod in agreement.

And the rest of this little tea break passes on in silence, though you don't mind. You get the impression that Dorothy's mood had improved rather greatly as she relaxes in your presence. You don't really want to ruin the moment by speaking up, so you don't.

Maybe tea wasn't so bad after all...
