It is the Year of Our Lord 1120. You are Victor Reis, a Knight-Captain of the Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Frankfurt (The Teutonic Order.) You had come to the Holy Land after a request for aid from your brothers in the newly-formed Templar order, and traveled with them to a mountain pass Northeast of Acre, and joining a Saracen horde in battle there, suddenly found yourself in another world, along with your Teuton brothers and Templar allies. After an ordeal that involved Elves, the Wilde Jaege, and even more Elves, you finally made your way back to the warcamp, that was transferred to the world as well.

Now, you are on a crusade, to new land in the north, nestled away in the mountains, named South Laaegonel. Filled with strange beings, a mad king, and war all around, your work is certainly cut out for you.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Previously, on Fantasy Crusader Quest....

You met new people, made a new ally, and met a demon in your dreams.
>>
>>2087092

You are Cellica Eilfaren. Wood Elf of Mornaur. Daughter of Wyrran, the Fineri of Mornaur. And now, the former Ambassador to the Crusaders of the Templar and Teuton Orders. Currently on your way home to Mornaur after someone who you THOUGHT was your friend, and a good person, Victor, slaughtered people in cold blood.

Having ridden your horse out of South Laaegonel for days, and crossing the plains that led to the familiar woods of your homeland, you remained in your thoughts, stewing in your anger and guilt the whole way.

Could you have stopped them if you had just realized what was going on quick enough? Would they have even listened?

A thought that you don't particularly like crosses your mind, and it causes you to scrunch up your face in anger.

Were Victor and the others right? Was it a mercy? You find yourself doubting everything you thought you knew about these humans, recently.

Shaking your head, as if to clear the bad thoughts away, you turn your mind to Mornaur, and your father. What will he think of your return? Will he be happy? Angry that you abandoned your new duty?

You just hope that you didn't mess things up more than they already were, by doing this.

The rest of your journey is in a miasma of uncertainty, disappointment, and sadness. You tell yourself that you shouldn't feel this bad about everything, that you shouldn't be surprised, you heard the stories about humans, but you just can't help yourself.

He really had you fooled, huh?

------------------------------------------------------

When you reach Mornaur, your sudden appearance out of the woods gives the guards at the gate a start, but they quickly open the gates for the daughter of the Fineri. They appear to want to ask questions, but your ragged and downcast appearance gives them pause.

Rushing you to the Fineri's Keep, they keep any inquisitive elves away, and as soon as you're inside the keep's courtyard, you dismount your horse, and a stableboy rushes up to you, blubbering, asking if he could help.

Exhausted, you just hand him the reins and dismount, heading to the large double doors of the main hall. The guards quickly, and without question, open it for you, but you do notice their worried looks. Kind of them.

Now inside the main hall, you stand alone, flanked on either side by the statues of the Fineri of the past. The warm torchlight and familiar surroundings doesn't seem to do anything to lift your malaise.

Finding your way through the halls that you grew up in, you go to the throne room, where two guards are standing on either side of the open door, and they look at you with surprise and worry.

"Lady Cellica!"

"Are you alright?"

"Why are you back-"

You cut them off with your hand, holding it up wearily.

"I'm sorry, but I'd rather just talk to my father, if that's alright with you."

They look at each other, and slowly nod.

"Okay, Lady Cellica, but remember, we're here if you need anything."

Giving them a strained smile, you nod.

"Thanks."

Wyrran, your father, and the leader of all of the Wood Elves of Mornaur, is in the middle of meeting with a tall, handsome looking fellow, when you walk in the throne room. As soon as he sees you, he hops up from his throne, and runs to you, wrapping you in a crushing hug. You hug him back, just holding him, feeling that familiar sensation of protection and love as you did when you were small.

"Celly! Why are you here? Is everything fine?" Pulling back, he looks you over. "You look terrible! What's wrong?"

Looking to the tall elf, your father says, "If we could continue this some other time..."

Graciously, the handsome elf bows.

"Of course, Fineri. I would not dream of interrupting time with your daughter."

As he leaves, the tall elf nods to you.

"It is good to see you again, Cellica. It has been quite a while."

Nodding back, you look at your father and sigh.

Taking a seat on your father's throne, you look down, and begin your tale, starting from when you left Mornaur, leaving nothing out.

Your voice breaks when you describe what Victor and the rest of the humans did, to other humans no less, and your father looks at you with sympathy, but you can tell that he's not as outraged as you would expect him to be.

"Cellica..." He places a hand on your chin and gently guides your head up, looking at you softly. "I... I think we need to have a talk."

Confused, you just nod, and sniffle.

Sitting on the arm of the throne, your father continues speaking, always with that soft, gentle, yet informative tone.

"Back in the war against the Imperium, when i was still a young elf.. I was one of the Five Generals. You know that. It's mostly my fault, but you're ignorant of what I had to do as a general."

He shifts uncomfortably beside you.

"I don't want you to think any less of me but... I think it's time you know this about me. As a general, I had to put entire cities to the sword and torch, I had to slaughter farmers and homesteads, I had to personally torture hundreds of men for military intelligence, and I had to murder thousands of slaves involved in their construction projects."

Your eyes widen, and you start to pull away, but he grabs your hand gently, yet firmly.

"It was a fight for our survival, Cellica. It was total war. And I can't blame Victor for making that choice. It was, from what you're telling me, either dragging around men who would probably starve to death, or letting scum of the earth go free."

Hearing your kind, friendly father, the one who always has a ready smile for anyone, and protects his people as their just leader, say this, shakes you to your core.

You.... you don't know what to think.

Quietly, you ask him, "How did you sleep at night?"

He replies just as softly, with a haunted look in his eye.

"I didn't, not really."

You process this.

And then you run.

You run out of the keep, out of the city, and you just keep running and running and running until you can't run any more and you just fall on the ground, out of breath. You try to get up but you can't so you slump on the ground against a tree, winded.

Closing your eyes, you let your head hit the tree, and you start sobbing.

First Victor, then your own father. Who can you trust, now? Galadon? It'll turn out that he's had to let a child die instead of healing him, or something equally as horrible. Why is everyone you ever thought you knew turning out to be bad?

After crying for a bit, you open your eyes, and are quickly startled by the sudden change in your surroundings. It's nighttime, and you're in a forest that you don't recognize. In the distance, there is a patch of dark against the clouds.. wait, did it just mov-

SMALL ONE.

Your thoughts are immediately interrupted by the deafening roar of a thunderous bass voice.

Standing up quickly, you look around, and you see the patch of dark move and oh gods is that a giant elk and is it looking at you

WHY DO YOU CRY.

The giant elk tilts its head at you, as if curious. Frightened by this development you can do nothing but stammer for a few seconds, but you eventually find your words.

For some reason, you feel like you can't stay silent, as if you're compelled to answer.

"I thought I knew what the world is like. Turns out I didn't. I can't believe that good people do terrible things. I just can't."

The giant elk snorts, a loud thing that blows wind through the trees, hard enough to bend some, but somehow, leaves you untouched.

GOOD MEN DO WHAT MUST BE DONE. EVEN IF WHAT THEY MUST DO IS HARD. YOU ARE RIGHT. YOU KNEW NOTHING OF THE WORLD.

You feel mildly insulted and hurt, but you're not about to bring that up to the giant elk.

The elk flares its' nostrils and looks to the north, or what you assume to be the north, from the position of the moon.

YOU MUST GO BACK.

At this, you speak up.

"And why is that? Even if I wanted to go back, do you really think they would accept me, after I just left?"

Its' eyes narrow.

YOU ARE QUICK TO LEAVE HERD-FRIENDS BEHIND, LITTLE ONE.

Wincing, you just look down, and say nothing.

THERE IS A TAINT IN STONE-HILLS TO THE NORTH.

A vision of a single red eye, peering from an obfuscating darkness around it, flashes in your mind.

STEEL MAN NEEDS YOU. I SEE THIS.

You frown at this. "No he doesn't, he has hundreds of warriors with him-"

The elk chuffs and this time, you are flung with the wind, and you black out.

You awaken on a hidden Elf-trail in Mornaur. One that you recognize quite well. It's a secret path that leads to the cellars underneath the Fineri's Keep.

You decide to leave a note and then head right back to South Laaegonel.

Whatever your thoughts on what Victor did, he was- no, IS your friend. And if some weird giant elk says he needs your help with some 'taint' in the mountains, then you'll give it.

Because it's the right thing to do.

Walking along the path to your home, you prepare to leave once more, and for how long, you don't know.

But you know that you won't leave Victor's side anytime soon. And you WILL talk to him about what he did, that's for sure.

You just hope you get there in time.

You are once more Victor Reis, Knight-Commander of the Tueton Order, Duke of Hessia, Count of Todes-Tal and Baron of Eisfeld. And your head hurts like no headache you've ever had before.

Stumbling out of your tent, you blink hard as the sunlight assaults your senses, actually coming close to hurting you before normalizing.

What... was that?

Whatever it was, you can ignore it for the moment, now. As swiftly the sensation came, it left, abandoning you with naught but a dull throb in your forehead, for which you are grateful. You don't have time for any more serious maladies to afflict you.

Shaking it off, you stride into the center of your camp, where your eighty-two men are getting ready for the day. Some are in various states of battle readiness, but you note with satisfaction that all of them carry a sword at their hip. It pays to be ready at any time, in a land where men can fight without pain or fear.

Giving some encouraging words to the men in full dress, and some light reprimands to those who are not, you go through your camp, making sure they see you after a major conflict like what just happened. However, you're holding off on pushing them too hard, lest they suddenly remember they are nobility as well, although very much your lesser.

Sighing, you consider your options for the morning while stoking a fire near your tent.

First, you could speak with your fellow Knight-Captains, talk strategy with them. You have a general focus, but no unified plan for going forward.

Second, you could talk with Duran about the issues plaguing the region more in-depth, now that he isn't injured, and you aren't under constant attack.

Thirdly, you could simply train with Kathrin, and tell her of your dream. That was... unnatural, even for dreams.

Walking towards the command tent, Kathrin following closely behind, you make some small talk about the status of the North Army, and how your morning was. You wave it off as typical, like nothing strange happened, but you think that she noticed something, though, what you do not know.

Pushing your way through the heavy canvas flap, Kathrin and you walk to the table (Sebastian's) and look at the map (now also Sebastian's after Lord-Mayor Bennet MacShim gave it to him,) which has several improvised wax figures placed on it, representing the army.

Nodding to you, Sebastian says, "Welcome. Sigmund, Guies, and I were just waiting on you and the rest. Please, review the map in the meantime.

"This," he says, pointing to the symbol that represents Ardon Glen, "is where we are. Where we want to be, however, is an entirely different matter entirely."

Raising an eyebrow, you ask, "Do we not want to be wherever the Empire is, as to drive them from this land?"

The oldest Knight-Captain nods.

"Yes. But, you must understand, Victor, there are many things which must be determined before we move, such as where to go first."

You quirk an eyebrow.

"Would attacking the Traitor Legion first not prove infinitely more beneficial? A wandering enemy behind is a nightmare for a rescue mission."

Sebastian is about to speak, but Sigmund smiles and holds up his hand.

"Sebastian, I know what you're about to say, and I'll probably word it more tactfully to the young boy."

Sebastian nods and remains quiet, instead opting to study the map that the locals gave you.

"Victor, my boy, I understand where you are coming from, and I completely agree. I feel that we should strike on our terms. However..." He frowns. "Well, from what I've heard, the situation up at Highrock doesn't seem particularly... tenable."

You see where this is going, and you simply nod.

"It's going to be a choice between fighting the enemy on our turns, or saving as many of the monk-warriors as possible."

You shake your head.

"Always with the damned choices, now. I miss the days of glorious charges in the desert against heathen."

Sebastian smirks. "Oh, there were choices, blessed Brother, you just weren't on the council that made them."

As Veit, Natalia, Gunther, and Aedilhun arrive, you simply shrug.

"Fair enough, I suppose."

Greeting Natalia with a smile, you bring her up to date on the situation, as she stands next to you.

When each Knight-Captain is informed sufficiently, the true meeting begins.
>>
>>2098549

Veidt is the first to speak after the official meeting is called.

"Well I should think that the answer is obvious."

Gunther quirks an eyebrow and asks, "Ahnd vhat maht tha' be?"

Veidt points at Highrock, the besieged monastery.

"Valuable soldiers who are educated, and hold a fortress we might take permanent refuge in? They would make for potent allies." Scoffing, he continues, "We have no need to be wary of these heathen in the valley below, we trounced them easily once, we shall do it again as need be."

Sir Aedilhun and Sir Guies both begin to reply at the same time, but they apologize, and wish for the other to continue. This goes on for about half a minute.

Natalia cuts in, ending the display preemptively.

"As much as I love to see Frank-Anglo relations bloom, we have other matters to discuss."

Pointing back down at the pressed wax seal, loosened and re-purposed as a unit marker, Natalia moves it over to where the last of the local Vexillation was seen.

"As much as allies are necessary at this juncture, we still cannot sacrifice the chance to strike the enemy before they are even aware of our presence." She looks to you and smiles. "What's the words you Germans call it? B-blits...kreeg?"

Sigmund nods. "Ja. A blitzkrieg is what we need, now. Without the majority of Christian forces here for a siege, we cannot afford them any time to reinforce or hunker down in some hideaway."

Veidt is about to start up another argument, when Sebastian holds up his hand, and you all fall silent.

"All in favor of attacking the heathen? Raise your hand." Sebastian notably lowers his hand, while Sigmund, Natalia, and Gunther all raise them. Veidt, Aedilhun, and Guies all keep their hands down.

While the majority of your fellow Teutons, do, in fact, raise their hands, you do not.

This is the cause of some consternation and perplexity among them, particularly since they're some of your friends.

Natalia is the first to speak, looking confused at first, but then giving a wry smile.

"Remind me to never underestimate you, or try and predict what you'll do, Victor."

Sigmund is even more confused, but a little proud as well? You can't really decipher fatherly looks quite yet.

"Mein Prinz... might I ask why you chose not to strike now?"

You nod.

"Of course, Sigmund. While a quick first strike would be optimal for a force that knows the terrain, the only locals able to assist us are a dwarf recovering from injury, an Elf who isn't here" you bite your tongue to prevent saying any more, "and a Lord-Mayor who has duties as a protector of his town."

Natalia rolls her eyes. "When you say it like that, of course it's the most sensible option put forward."

Smiling, she shakes her head. "While I will be the first to say I'm disappointed by not meeting our enemy in a lightning strike, this plan works as well. I pledge my support to this course of action."

Sebastian looks at Sigmund and Gunther, raising an eyebrow.

They sigh, and do the same.

With the meeting concluded, Sigmund rolls up the map in a scroll tube, and waves you out of his tent.

"The meeting is now adjourned. Now git."

You and Kathrin begin to leave, only to get stopped by Natalia.

"Victor! One minute of your time, please, I wish to speak with you."

Turning around, you look at the tall, muscular blonde who has jogged to catch up to you and your lieutenant.

Wow that was a lot later than expected

You nod, and motion for her to come with you.

"Walk with me, and I can talk."

As you and Natalia walk to your warband's camp, you ask, "So, to what do I owe the pleasure, Lady Cusimano?"

Natalia shrugs, and grins.

"Ah, well, I had not spoken for you in a time, and I simply thought we might converse."

Nodding, as this is a perfectly reasonable response, you smile, and say, "Very well then. So, how's Ka? Is she settling in well?"

Natalia clearly loves talking about her adoptive daughter, as her face lights up even more.

"Oh, yes! She's quite taken with Nicodemo, my second, and he acts as an older brother to him!" She gives a beatific smile, and looks down, actually slightly embarrassed, but still happy. "She... she started calling me 'mother' the other day."

Patting her heartily on the back, you beam.

"That's great, my friend! I'm happy for you!"

Falling silent, smiling, Natalia is the one to break the silence, with a question.

"Actually... might I request for you to do something, Victor?"

You nod and motion for her to continue.

"If possible, I would have our warbands stay together on the march, and in battle as well. Not only would it nearly triple our manpower, the company would be excellent, as well." She gives a playful wink. "So, Victor? What say you?"

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Athinar's decision to not run FCQ. The logic of it is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the proofs will go over a typical player’s head. There’s also Victor’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The regulars understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these references, to realise that they’re not just double meanings- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Athinar's decision to not run FCQ truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Athinar's existential catchphrase “maybe tomorrow night, OJ” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Athinar’s genius wit unfolds itself on their computer screens. What fools.. how I pity them.

And yes, by the way, i DO have a Fantasy Crusader Quest tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid

Jogging off, Natalia waves to you as she departs for her camp.

"Farewell, and I shall see you soon!"

You return the wave in kind, and chuckle, walking to your tent, which is now but a few lengths away now.

Turning to Kathrin, you say, "She was rather excitable, no?"

Kathrin moves beside you, taking her place at your side.

"Well, you have neglected to speak with her out of the tactical meetings, and she does visibly enjoy your company."

You shrug.

"I can't imagine why. Anyone who enjoys being around me is obviously a terrible judge of character."

Kathrin says nothing, but you do see her shake her head from the corner of your eye. You don't bring it up.

Your tent is where you part ways, Kathrin going to inform the men of the change, leaving you open for the next few hours.

Now... what to do?

You kneel in the slightly darkened light of your tent, out of sight of the world, and pray.

Beginning with the standard prayers for penance and absolution, you move onto more private prayers for faith and strength, begging the Holy Mother to intercede on your behalf.

In the lull between a prayer, you begin humming Christ Ist Erstanden, for what reason, you don't know, but it just feels right.

And then, softly, you break into song, keeping your song as sort of a secret prayer between only you and God.

Christ ist erstanden
Von der Marter alle,
Des solln wir alle froh sein,
Christ will unser Trost sein.
Kyrie eleis.

Wär er nicht erstanden,
So wär die Welt vergangen;
Seit daß er erstanden ist,
So lobn wir den Vater Jesu Christ.
Kyrie eleis.

Halleluja,
Halleluja, Halleluja!
Des solln wir alle froh sein,
Christ will unser Trost sein.
Kyrie eleis.

Closing your eyes, you feel as if you're drifting away, a comforting shadow surrounding you, cooling you, soothing your soul.

You swear you can hear a soft, still voice speaking to you, in the back of your mind, but for the life of you, you cannot understand it. Focusing on it, you hear it in greater and greater clarity, until it forms words you can understand.

"Worry not. Your cause is righteous, and your fellows are not lacking in faith nor zeal. Stride forth, then, and know you are a champion of the LORD."

Something flashes before your... eyes(?), but you wake up before you can get a close look at it.

Standing up, you look around your tent. It is an hour later, and the sun still hangs bright in the sky.

Well then. If you had been feeling any lack of resolve, or had any doubts... they're certainly gone now.

Stepping into the camp for the second time today, but this time finally feeling 'awake,' you smile as the sun hits your face.

You think you'll go find Edgar, train him some. It's been far too long.

Thanks for playing! I'm glad I could finally run FCQ again!

Next thread will either be The Factory or Free Space: Mercenaries. I'm getting all of my quests online, so help me god.
