/qst/ - Quests

This is a quest in which you are reincarnated into another world, but are unable to speak the language. The quest is designed such that the player's understanding of the language and its systems, as well as the culture of people that speak it, is a metric for progression within the quest. It's meant to be like putting together a puzzle. When you learn the meaning of a word, or the nature of a grammatical structure, it will shed light on previous encounters and perhaps lead you to further discoveries. I encourage you to read the archived threads often for this reason. Thank you.

I think...

I think I'm dead again.

Am I?

It's different than last time. I'm not in the big M's fuck palace so that's probably a positive.

Everything's just black.

Oh wait a minute! Maybe I should just open my eyes! If I'm not dead I should see things. With my eyes.

You do open your eyes. Above you is a stone domed ceiling. It's cold, and you can see dust floating around. You slowly start to become aware of a weight on your body. You look toward your feet, a still body lay on you. It's a girl. You know this girl.

This girl's name is Tits Felt. It's not weird in her language, although admittedly you don't know what it actually means. She's technically your servant, or rather she's a servant at the castle where you became a princess. The last time you saw her, she had tried to kill you.

To be fair, I thought she did. Definitely had a knife lodged in my gut right after I kissed her.

You find it rather curious that you're still alive. But the question of whether or not the girl is...

Oh shit is Ti alive!?

You rapidly move to see if she's breathing, but your body siezes up with pain. You fall flat on your back again and writhe. Your stomach wound must still be open.

You push through the pain and manage to sit up, rolling Ti off of you onto her back. She's patrid and her lips are blue, but she's breathing, faintly at least. Taking another look around you realize what you thought before was dust is not. Dark grey and white flakes leave wakes of smoke behind them as they serenely trode the ambient air currents.

Ash.

The stands are burning, and the room is filling with smoke.

You sling Ti over your shoulder and pull yourself toward the exit of the collisseum. Beyond the door, a hallway. Beyond the hallway, the courtyard of statues. The statues still stand, but the castle walls, made of ice and wood, are cracked and melting. You weave between the statues of animals and humanlike creatures.

You continue this way until your path is blocked by a tall and imposing woman, garbed in white.

"This... You led them to me, you've brought fire to my kingdom of ice. And yet still you stand alive..."

"I don't know how I'm alive either. Love, luck, lion Jesus? You make me sad Jadis."

The witch places a hand around your throat and lifts you.

"If I die, you die. The girl dies."

You stay silent, suspended easily a foot above the ground, until suddenly a roar seems to shatter the veil of your senses. Before you can realize what has happened, a blur of gold has knocked the witch to her feet and swept you onto its back.

Even being on it gives you more energy and you feel less pain. Now with more focus you can grasp what's going on.

You sit on the back of giant golden lion, and Ti is sat behind you. In front of you, weilding a sword, sits Kertormi Fig. He turns around.

"Sorry I was so late, I needed a little help." He smiles and winks at you.

All around you hear the sound of animals and voices. "Down with the witch!", "Leave nothing standing!", "It's time we had our just desserts!" They shout.

Pouring through the gates and over the walls are hundreds of talking animals. Beavers, badgers, squirrels, and even the tiny but brave mice.

The witch recovers from her fall and brandishes a wand. The courtyard of statues begin to move. Soon it's a brawl between the talking beasts and the Witches' statues. Kertormi jumps from the lion's back and joins the fight, expertly stone-croning those cobble fucks.

You feel Ti starting to move around.

"Huh... Chaz, what's going on? I thought I..."

The lion interjects.

"Save your strength young Tits, your wounds have not yet fully recovered. Although you may want to hold on to me tightly!"

He roars and pounces on several statues.

The army of free Narnians slowly push through the numbers, surrounding the White Witch. When her numbers have been reduced to none, she has nowhere to go.

Kertormi walks back to Aslan when the action has calmed. He extends a hand for you to get down.

You do, and he hands you the sword.

"Please, I insist."

You resolutely take the sword from Kertormi.

You stand above the Witch, defeated. Heads will roll. You raise the sword and bring it down upon her white and fluffy...--

Wait a second, that's not a witch who's been defeated in combat by hundreds of woodland creatures, two hunky men, a girl, and a lion. That's a pillow.

You're also not executing it. It's a hug, and the sword is your drool.

There's a knock on the door, and the sound pierces your head like a dull pencil. You practically feel hungover. You try to ignore it, but the person knocks again.

"Okay okay! Come in just so you'll stop pounding, Jesus."

A man opens the door. It's Kertormi. He's carrying a plate of food.

"Amo-amo-amo-izhu, hajebshia! Fig dudh t' Kertormi t' makiguji pier bitze! Sa sa, he lou hagjitzo." He is very animated, moving from fast and energetic to coy and sarcastic. He wiggles his eyebrows.

His upbeatedness and general healthy attitude around life make you angry. It also makes you embarrassed that he's seeing you with your bed head for some reason. You blush and angrily pull your standing hair down, thinking to yourself.

No of course it wasn't real. Can't ever catch a break here and talk in my own language huh.

Kertormi looks around awkwardly, then back to you.

"Hn, agujis yensa peyo no? A bong bong, oze moise."

He bows and goes back out the door.

Well... May as well eat. It smells alright, and you're pretty hungry.

He had brought in a tray with several items, way too much for you to eat on your own. Maybe he was going to eat with you.

On the tray, the food is actually labeled, with what you assume to be names of the dishes.

Did he... Label these for me? That's actually really thoughtful...

It takes you a bit, but you figure them out. One looks like some kind of egg and cream dish. Specifically, multiple strips of fully mixed egg are layered across one another, with various meats and vegetables almost tied in the lattice of egg. The veggies look to be mainly peppers and thin leaves.

"Okay... This one says uh... Kov... A... Ji. Kovaji. Kov-a-ji, not ko-va-ji. I should remember that."

The second, a bread based thing. They're balls, with what look like raisins embedded in them, but the 'raisins' are pink. There's also a powder on the top that smells slightly malt. Somewhere between celery salt and dill pickle.

"Toto. Nice and simple I like that."

>Eat yourself some kovaji. Egg is a classic with breakfasts, and this is basically an omelette, just tied up instead of folded.
>Grab them toto balls. It's time to expand your palette with something new and interesting.
>Run out and invite Kertormi to eat with you. He did save your life... Well, in the dream.

Well, no sense in delaying. You've got stuff to do. You grab a toto and bite in. Initially it just tastes like a biscuit, but a flavor emerges when the first pink raisin breaks. Whatever was inside starts to mingle with the powder. It's spicy, but tastes like coconut. The malt smell disappears and the coconut flavor morphs into something like butter and cinnamon. The spice fades fairly quickly, and you realize that the flavors were all fairly muted, nothing over the top. They just seemed more vibrant than they were because you hadn't tasted it before.

"Well I'll bless the rains down in africa those are definitely edible."

You finish the breakfast and get dressed and grab your things, leaving shortly afterward. Outside is one of the Fig servants. They beckon you to follow, and they take you to the courtyard. There the party has gathered and are exchanging elbow-fists with Kertormi. A cart waits at the gate. You show up and he waves at you.

"Sa, Chaz, chenhe t' agujis gbui ke no?"

Fuck it, thumbs up, whatever he's asking.

He smiles and elbow-fists you, then returns to addressing the group.

"Zhœnhe, delsa jize, sovaiksu kondilaizhœ no?"

"M, nani tso no?" Replies Katchi.

"Vumon thoya Viliga loe naozhu?"

"Om. Delsa ze so."

Lelestzam jumps in, "A... Kemyu loe..."

"Sanasana! Homitzoe œ! Sa, vuze jo." He reaches into his coat and retrieves a pocketbook. He takes a pen and writes something. You feel a warmth from your own pocket. Checking it, your stat card is glowing and once again the stat-ups are presented.

He exchanges a final goodbye with your group as you all climb in the cart. You're the last one to climb in, but Kertormi grabs your wrist before you do. He leans in and speaks quietly after letting go, "Hzalin fulta d' melyajin lou moiche œ."

He smiles and winks, then waves as you climb in the cart as well You wave back, and the cart leaves. You are pulled back through the city, then out along the river's edge. You have another long ride ahead of you. Not much to do but decide on your next stat boost while you wait.

You take out your stat card and touch...

You feel slightly more Intelligent.

Katchi is sitting next to you, and notices your choice.

"Hn gaifun... œ? Chaz, hwuvihi tonsu... jesi yensa no?"

Lelestzam catches your conversation. She forms a wry smile and starts speaking dramatically. "Hehe... Banhe bong medmayadh gilli, N' he bong memyadh. Shimohe tasun yiposœ."

Katchi blinks.

"œ... na... Chaz? E dada... da...-- Vuze nanin tettza! Tzamu, banhe maites l' buyi tetza!"

"Om."

Katchi swaffles her eyes between you and Lelestzam.

"N... Chenhe pishchitzi peyo no...? Tentatzo?"

"Ime. He tasun memyadh f' tettzu."

"E?! D-dzamu, tubuzha...! Chenhe anmemadh f' tettzœ peyo chenhe loe, tubuzha!" Katchi prostrates herself, bowing over and over to Lelestzam, who sits with a smug grin and folded arms, laughing.

Hflei and Vanrir remain in character as the silent and uncomfortably tall knights throughout the rest of the ride back to Wanjish.

By speaking in their own language and showing them your efforts, your bond with your party has deepened. They will remember this.

The cart enters a familiar forest. You're just east of Wanjish, and sure enough your eyes prove you right. Just beyond a break in the trees you see the grand eastern bridge, and the lake below it. The city you've come to recognize beckons you closer, and your heart warms to see it again, despite only being gone a day. Through the city gates, you're back on solid ground. You pass the dense urban housing, and once more go by the Kut d' hadi. This time though things are more lively; horses and empty carts are lined up in the spaces between where the catwalks begin, while workers hang around laughing and eating.

"A Chaz, hadi d' soroyo moisu yensa no?" asks Katchi.

You're stuck trying to figure out the new word, but your thinking is interrupted by the sound of a horn.

She laughs, "Ee Jafu~"

The resting workers rush to positions. Quite a few run down the slopes into the water beneath the catwalks, while six go along the catwalks and grab hold of the large contraptions, one each. Soon you notice wooden rafts troding the current of the lake. The rafts get pulled by the gentle eddie caused by the odd shape of the inlet, and the workers below work together to wrestle them still. Once they have a raft secure, they'll whistle, and the worker above them cranks one of the handles on the mechanism. A thick rope tied to a metal hook uncoils, and the workers below attach it to one of the crates or barrels on the raft. The crane operator pulls that object up, then slides the crane along the rail to the cart. He sets it down inside, unhooks the crane, then pushes it back again above the raft, and repeats until the raft is empty. Several teams all perform this dance, unloading multiple rafts at the same time. When a raft is empty, the anchors (what you've decided to call the people in the water) push it back out into the lake, where it catches on the southward current again.

Well then.

When you're done being mesmerized by the Kut d' hadi, you realize the cart is moving again.

It took you multiple minutes to make sure the last thing you said was coherent. It's progress, but you're not ready for conversation. Instead, you simply let the cart take you where it will. It drops you off at the stable, and your party walks back to the castle. At the gate you are greeted by Viliga, who welcomes you all back. You see another face just behind him. Leaning against the wall is Kamyen.

Back inside you are treated to a good midday meal. Nothing heavy, in fact it's quite familiar. A sandwich, although it looks as though sliced bread has yet to be the coolest thing. Nonetheless, some kind of meat, lettuce, tomatoes, and a pinkish spread that tastes like cumen.

Afterward, you are left with some free time. With it, you choose to...

Learning Hajetmon is your highest priority, and who better to teach you than the self proclaimed "tasun memyadh"?

In the study, Lelestzam is already waiting for you. She notices you standing in the door. "Chaz! Bizhe." You take it as an invitation and enter. She waits for you to get sat down before starting. "M, jiche. Vuzdo, ai, aᵒ, eᵃ, ei, oi d' maᵒtuya f' memyaso."

"I don't know what you said but I'm down. Let's do this."

She doesn't know what you said but she's down. She nods and intensely locks eyes with you. Her face becomes stout as she swiftly places her book on the table, opening to a page without even looking. She spins it to face you, and points at the top-rightmost symbol.

"Aᶦ."

She continues, right to left, top to bottom: "Aᴼ, oi, ei, eᵃ."

She then hand writes and shows you a note. "Vumo yazhu."

You throw up your arms as a sign of surrender, but she accepts no such gesture of weakness. She simply stares at you, feeling more and more superior as you wrestle with the question. While she waits she pulls an apple from her bag and begins eating.
