"Uh-uh!" Cell laughs, wagging his finger. "Trying to tamper with my energy right now would be a big mistake. I could detonate prematurely! That could happen from any kind of jolt, too, in case some of you are thinking of attacking me."

You see Lapis, Lazuli, and Piccolo stop charging up attacks, each of them looking furious and fearful.

"Stop this, Cell!" Goku commands, stepping toward the monster.

"Too late, Goku!" he declares. "I couldn't stop this even if I wanted to. We're all going to die! So, I guess we can call the Cell-Games a draw, can't we?"

I would say that the major obstacle in a dragon ball quest is just how much dragon ball relies in powerlevels. Since the Z era, the non movie villains with few exceptions are usually impossibly powerful to the point that every single one of them was defeated through asspulls. Therefore, the quest master by default has to either: Power down how ridiculously powerful a villain is so non-saiyan peope has a chance at it, or give our playable character asspull powers as well. And then there's how this one uses a dice system that as another anon said, it could make smart thinking look like retarded shit with a bad roll or make a really stupid idea look brilliant with a fantastic roll.

I feel the same thing. Canon villains have some very thick plot armor that makes sure they will do everything they do in canon before they can be killed. I mean, we could've murdered Freezer before he evolved but he got away with it and evolved, the androids could've been defeated before they woke up the other set of androids but they always got away, and in our latest example, Cell effectively got wiped out several times but always got away no matter how hard he got his ass kicked.

It's like unless they perform the actions they are fated to do in canon, any success against them is at best a small victory that only hinders them a little and can only be genuinely defeated once they have nothing else to do, then good rolls suddenly are critical hits instead of merely hinder them a little.

I think this is the inherent problem with Dragonball quests. Killing a major villain off easily or early due to player agency (metagaming or otherwise) can be a nice payoff but it's ultimately unsatisfying in the DB setting. On the flipside retarded asspulls to keep them alive and robbing players of their agency or making their agency mean jack shit is even worse.

DB strives on back and forth battles that push the MC to their limits but ultimately succeed (via the occasional asspull transformation but that's another matter). Emulating that while maintaining player agency along with the wishy washy RNG of dice rolls and not blatantly railroading is pretty damn tough.

Then throw in Goku and the others into that mix cause you decided the [Self insert thrown into Main canon] quest is what you wanted to write makes things even more limited cause you are bound by those canon characters powers and limitations when you could have gone full OC and made your own rules.

There should be a positive and negative modifier depending on factors such as combat advantage or exhaustion and the like. While yes it does prolong engagements and could be seen as 'padding' you do get the back and forth that can see sudden defeat or rapid victory depending on the dice; But also in the middle you get fights that can be truly legendary and back and forth.

As for Plot, that's more SOM wanting to stick to the cannon than anything else. I'm not shilling my quest here for good reason, however there is plenty of ways to handle events such as cell or other major bosses without having to throw the MC directly into it because we need to be there in order to experience the saga.

But then again, that's just my point of view.

I'd actually love to see a quest which did away with the absurd power scaling after Frieza. Dude's supposed to be the strongest in the universe, then he's made into a joke almost immediately after he's beaten. Maybe he really is the strongest in terms of raw power, and Cell makes up the difference by actually being a good fighter or something. Or just add sagas between them to make the androids' absurd power creep not as big a deal.

Although to be fair, the only reason the android/Cell sagas lasted more than about ten minutes was because of an absolutely ludicrous number of ass-pulls all in rapid sequence from Toriyama. It would be hard to fix the arc without just changing the whole arc; which, honestly, is probably a good idea for any future quests. Maybe it's just me, but this quest really demonstrated why I don't like these sagas. And almost none of it is even SOM's fault; the arcs are just like that. They rely on no one being able to take full measures against the villains, so the arcs' lifespans are way longer than they otherwise would be. In my opinion, future QMs would probably be better off just coming up with something new.

Indeed, the Z saga is pretty bad about it, progressively introducing the strongest being ever except that there's somebody stronger nearby except that somebody even strong than the one stronger than the strongest warrior ever appears out of nowhere. It introduced way too fast people who can destroy planets effortlessly and things only got even more ridiculous with the advent of newer villains. And with super, shit got so ridiculous that goku and the villains are on the level of being capable of blowing galaxies just by exchanging blows

There's also the powercreep that is super saiyan. Back in original dragon ball, there wasn't such thing as zenkais or super saiyans, so everybody could potentially be awesome, but in Z shit escalates so hard that if a QM wants to keep non saiyajin characters competitive, they too need to get bullshit power ups as well, like with Tofoo's god ki. Or alternatively nerf or get rid of super saiyajin forms.

There are also other ways to stack up, especially if you are human. See the issue is that we are looking at is "Power=Ability" which isn't always the case. Sometimes power itself is a weakness.

The Problem, I believe fundamentally isn't the power that people gain or are compared to; It's the way that they are written. The Gain in power, the way it shapes a character is honestly the most important.

If you give a human character a boost to the point that they can stand up to the likes of Cell or Frieza it has to FEEL genuine. You're someone who has either been on the sidelines or a secondary character that now has a that ability to DO SOMETHING.

Yeah. Super saiyan is pretty much the dealbreaker and THE obstacle that QM have to face sooner than later when they deal with the Z era. Even giving everybody access to Kaioken isn't enough to compare with the boost of super saiyan and if they took it to SS levels, they would end up completely burned in a second. In this quest in particular, Tofoo had to pretty much evolve Kaioken into something stronger and much less taxing to stay up to date and later retorted to things like fusion and god power ups to handle things that the yet to be seen SS2 stage could handle without problems.

The problem was that Kiaoken can only go so far before you're basically killing yourself to even stand a chance to a Saiyan. And with how crazy power levels kept growing, there's no way trying to make a human be almost as strong as Goku in your base form is a good idea either.

Hell, Tofoo trained his ass off, and he can only just keep up through sheer technique and ki control to punch waaay above the weight class. Goku and the others still have way more raw power on top of further potential. I'm amazed that we stopped it from becoming primarily "The Goku show" for as long as we did.

Dude, The kikohou is the strongest technique in the entire series. Even going as far as super nothing outside cheating and borrowing the power of others with the genki dama matches the sheer overwhelming power of a kikohou. Krillin used that on, what, 2nd Form Frieza? That put Frieza at 1 million, and Krillin at the time was I think 75,000. So Krillin was about 7.5% as strong as Frieza at the time. Insane, but something like the Destructo Disk could cover the difference, especially if Frieza wasn't anticipating it.
