Shinobi Quest #60/The Return!! #2

This quest takes place within the lands of the Five Great Shinobi Nations (aka Narutoverse) starting roughly around the beginning of the original series. The world of this quest remains similar to the original, with slight but notable differences in certain areas, based upon the passage of time from a single slightly altered event.

(It’s a goddamn Naruto Quest, you bastards. Have fun, participate, and write in when you feel inclined. Most of the outcomes of this quest will be determined by you, the players. Critiques and questions are always welcome, as my knowledge of the weeby shit is not all encompassing.)

Last Thread, Tsuki Norihime signed a contract in blood, gaining new allies- and for the second time, bridged the gap between their world and her own.

Then Wargle disappeared for the better part of a year. Whoops.

But at last; I am here.

And this is Shinobi Quest: The Return!!

At the end of our last thread, Tsuki and her Father Yoru Norihime were visiting the Hyuuga estate on business- to gain Hiashi's support in the Hokage selection process, and possibly even more. Speaking with the Lord of the Hyuuga proved to be a bit more daunting than initially anticipated, but after an initial blunder, Tsuki deftly navigated her way through the conversation. Now, let us return!!

------------------------

“That was part of the plan.” You say with a small smirk.

“Although, not all of it. Initially my family and I opted to keep knowledge of the ability I possess close to our chest- we were unsure of what it was capable of. Frankly, it took time to practice and utilize; that secrecy bore fruit when time for the exams came, as people didn’t know what to expect. Such things must be handled with care; this too is my responsibility to my family and to Konoha at large.” You explain.

That’s why you brand your branch members and strictly monitor them, right Hiashi?

The urge to say it is tantalizing. But you won’t. Not yet, at least.

“In this, we agree. Powerful techniques are a double-edged blade; if they are freely taken or copied, they will do as much harm to us as good. Some shinobi families would do well to exercise more caution.” He says, looking out over the crowd of gathered Hyuuga.

Caution, huh? You’d wager it’s more about control, but at the same time, he isn’t incorrect. The idea of enemy shinobi having access to your Stellar abilities isn’t something you’d really thought much about- and admittedly it isn’t a pleasant idea

[HIASHI OPINION +1]

It’s at this point, father returns.

“Sorry for the absence! Hopefully my daughter hasn’t talked your ear off, Lord Hiashi!”

Hardly. If anything, we didn’t get to talk enough….

“Nothing of the sort. Lady Tsuki was simply humoring me with a bit a conversation.” Hiashi replies.

“Speaking of which- if you don’t mind, she’ll be sitting in on our business later. If you don’t mind, of course.” Father puts forward.

Hiashi gives you a hard look. His face would be almost impassive, if not for the slightly raised eyebrow.

“....Very well then. She’s quite capable- I can see where it comes from, now.” He says after appraising you.

“It’s all from her mother, I assure you.” Father responds, giving the Lord of the Hyuuga his winning Norihime smile.

[HIASHI’S OPINION MEETS THE REQUIREMENT TO PROCEED TO THE NEXT STAGE!]

After father’s return, the dinner proceeds much as it did before, being a consummately boring affair. Eventually a second course is served; and while the food is delicious, you find it rather difficult to focus on the food.

You have a lot riding on the results of your negotiation with Hiashi- and by extension, the rest of the Hyuuga clan. So far, the Head of the Hyuuga has lived up to his reputation, being a gracious host to you and your father. However, beneath the smiles and meaningless platitudes, you can see the steel in the man. He’s clearly of a sharp, if somewhat traditional, mind- and his stubbornness is well known. You aren’t as worried about gaining his temporary allegiance, but rather the long term implications of the deal. In the end, you may need to take this slower than you initially expected.

Next to you, father sighs in contentment. “Nothing compares to a traditional meal, especially after spending so much time in the Capital.”

His raised voice serves it’s purpose, and you listen in.

“Surely a man of your means can have his choice of fine dining in that metropolis, no?” Hiashi says with undercurrent of amusement.

“Indeed- and the Daimyo’s personal kitchens aren’t to be sold short; but I was born and raised in Konoha, after all. A mixture of excellent food, good company and the nostalgia of returning home blends together into a wonderful experience.” Father explains, leaning into the back of his chair.

Hiashi smiles.

“I’m glad you are enjoying yourself. When I opened my home to your daughter and yourself, I wished for nothing more than for both to be able to relax, to feel as welcome as you would in your own home. I can only only hope the rest of Konoha is able to be open-hearted in these trying times.” Hiashi says, looking over the gathered clansman.

“We have something of the kind in mind- but that can wait until our dinner is finished.” Father adds.

“I’m sure you do- both of you.” Hiashi chuckles. “But, if you’ll excuse me, I need to see to our gathered clansman; I am the host, after all.”

“Of course. We’ll be here when you are finished.” Father responds.

With a quick nod to you both, the leader of the Hyuuga rises and begins a slow meander across the dining hall, making conversation with his clansmen.

"Enjoying yourself, Tsuki? The night has just begun, after all." Father says with a telltale wink.
You respond-

1. Positively. You're ready for the negotiations to come.

2. Impassively. You may need more of his assistance than you initially thought.

Not the worst I've ever been- but even now, I can't really hear out of my right ear. Double ear infections and an upper respiratory infection combined basically just left me drained, and it took forever to truly clear up. But, it's mostly gone now, and I only have a coughing fit once in a great while.

“Of course! Like you said- great food with good company makes for a cozy environment. If I’ve been quiet, it’s merely because I’ve been going over things mentally. I look forward to our after-dinner business.” You answer.

Father gives you a look you can’t quite read- then smothers it with a smile.

“Indeed? Either way, you’ll be the star of the show, my dear. This is, at it’s core, your plan- and your initiative.”

The weight of his expectations is palpable; and while you’ve never had much issue meeting them before, you cannot help but feel a slight jump in your stomach.

Don’t disappoint me; this is what that look means.

Any gaffs on your part will reflect poorly not just on yourself, but on father doubly so. Blundered negotiations might have wider reaching consequences, as well.

But instead of breaking under his gaze, you steadfastly return it.

You’re ready.

You’ll have to be.

You return his smile- and that, at least, seems to satisfy him.

~~~~~~
Once Hiashi returns to his seat, the dinner begins to draw to a close. Serving staff appears from the kitchen accessway to collect utensils, and after a few moments various Hyuuga approach the table in an orderly fashion, thanking the Lord Hyuuga for the meal. Again Hiashi plays the gracious host, returning the respect shown without any of the deference.
If nothing else, the ceremony of it all amuses you. All the moving parts and actors, each playing their role without question, no matter what differences in opinions or motivations exist among the clan. Such things are not shown to outsiders, after all.
Eventually, once this new display has ended and everyone has taken their seats, Hiashi rises to dismiss them. Once dismissed, the hall itself empties out rather quickly.
“We shall retire to one of our meeting rooms momentarily- I thank you both for your patience. Certain traditions call to be upheld when the majority of the clan gathers in one place.” Hiashi explains.
It strikes you as tedious, but at the same time, such are the responsibilities of those who lead the larger clans. You can only imagine how Sasuke manages, with the Uchiha being just as large as the Hyuuga are.
You suppress a grimace.
At this point, you notice Hinata and her sister Hanabi rise from their seats, thanking their father for the meal. Hinata’s eyes meet yours, though you don’t gather much from her expression. You’ll probably need to do a bit of explaining to your friend- although you aren’t really sure how much she should know. For now, anyway.
“Hinata. Our guests and myself will be retiring to discuss clan business; in due time I would like you to attend such meetings along with me. It is imperative that you learn to navigate the world of clan politics as young Tsuki has. Do your best to follow your teammate’s example.” Hiashi says, dismissing his daughters.
“Of course, father. I look forward to it.” She responds impassively.
Once the girls head off from the table, Hiashi turns back to both you and father.
“We’ll head to the meeting room now- please, follow me.”
Both of you rise, following the Hyuuga clan head’s lead.
~~~

The two of you are lead from the dining hall, down a large central hallway, and eventually through several simple rooms with traditional aesthetics, before one sliding door gives way to a larger room with spartan decorations and several simple pillows for sitting.

“I prefer the first of our two negotiation rooms, which contains an open air garden- sadly it’s a bit too cold to conduct business there currently. I hope this meets expectations?” Hiashi reports, closing the door behind you as you enter.

“This shall be perfect, no worries!” Father responds, idly looking about the room as he walks slowly to the prepared seat.

You follow behind, selecting the pillow to his immediate left. Hiashi takes the seat across from the both of you, settling in with practiced comfort. His pale irises pan from your father to yourself, slowly- before the veins on the sides of his head bulge with increased bloodflow.

“Byakugan!” You hear him murmur- before the veins recede as quickly as the appeared.

“Don’t mind me-” He says with an easy smile. “Just making sure we didn’t have any uninvited guests.”

The power of the Hyuuga’s Byakugan- to see nearly perfectly in a 360-degree field of vision around themselves, and sense chakra, to boot. Hiashi was likely able to see every person within this wing of the complex with his Dojutsu.

“Handy. We usually rely on a more traditional approach, but this fits us just fine.” Father says with amusement. “Shall we begin?”

[Negotiation!]

[When dealing with someone at or above your charismatic ability, a simple charisma check will not suffice to make them see your side. Instead, the conversation will go forward in it’s entirety, and the choices you make will affect that person’s opinion of you- or the faction or idea you are representing. When reaching a suitable level positive or negative opinion, the conversation will take a positive or negative turn- allowing to verbally go in for the kill- or try desperately to save your floundering negotiation. It’s back, by popular demand! Let’s see how low we can go, shall we? :^).]

[Hiashi's Current Opinion: +3]

3. Wait and see if Hiashi will initiate discussion.

Hiashi is a traditionalist. He'll listen to the introduction better if the Father is the one explaining it, not someone he's comparing constantly to his own disappointmentHinata.

1. Take the lead, introducing the topic at hand.
Gotta show strength, show that we aren't just parroting our father's intentions.

>>2137821
The general compromise is getting ROOT reinstated under the supervision of the Hokage. Danzo reassumes his latitude to strengthen Konoha's military and political might, while the Hokage (hopefully Tsunade) will balance him out and keep him from trying to go full tyrant, as that's one of the main things that screwed over ROOT, both in this timeline and in canon.
>>
>>2137921
>2. Let Father take the lead, letting him initiate discussion.

Our father is the head of our family. They must open the negotiations. We will then take centre stage when he defers to us to explain our plan.

Literally pointless and makes the entire idea of ROOT a moot point.

It's generally traditional for the heads to discuss and then our father will say we have something to put forward.

“Of course. Please proceed.” Hiashi says calmly.

Best to let Father start off- it’s what Hiashi will expect, and you don’t wish to offend the Hyuuga elder by speaking out of turn.

Very well. As you well know, our home is in a state of turmoil- the shinobi world is in chaos in the aftermath of the attack. The Kazekage is dead; our own Hokage has vanished, and the other three Shinobi Nations have already begun their maneuvering. Konohagakure is adrift at sea with no rudder; and while reconstruction has begun, it has been due to the efforts of men like ourselves that it does so. In the near month that the Lord Fourth has been gone, with no successor appointed, it has been a miracle that no other nations have capitalized on our weakness. It was with that in mind that the Daimyo of our Land of Fire has called upon us to elect a new Hokage.” Father announces, beginning the negotiation by setting the story straight. So that you will begin from the same logical point, you suspect.

“Indeed, all you have said is true. I admit the thought of another attack has been foremost in my mind; no doubt our village’s enemies scheme relentlessly to take advantage of this weakness.” Hiashi responds with a nod. None of this is news to him, obviously.

As such, the choice of who to lead us comes to the surface; and after cursory inquiry, it appears opinions on the matter vary greatly. This something that my daughter and I believe must be rectified- when the time for the election comes, there must be no question of who holds power. A contentious election only serves to weaken us further in this time of chaos. The Daimyo agrees with this assessment. To that end, we have discussed at length the options before us, and we believe that there is a clear solution.” Father continues.

“A fair assessment. It would be preferable if all of Konoha could unite under the selected Hokage, though I wonder if such a thing is possible.” Hiashi questions.

That was our concern as well. Tsuki, if you would?” Father agrees, before handing the reigns of the conversation over to you.

Hiashi raises an eyebrow, but says nothing.

[Hiashi’s Opinion +1! Currently at +4]

“Of course. Thank you, Father.” You respond.

We began by analyzing those most likely to be put forward as Hokage candidates. As you are likely already aware, though only the noble clans of Konoha can vote during the selection process, anyone of enough note is able to proclaim themselves, or someone else, as a potential Hokage candidate. We had to be thorough, as it was always possible for a dark horse candidate to be announced and throw the selection process off-kilter. There were many we considered, however looking at the fragmented situation Konoha is currently in, and our vulnerable position to others, there was really only one choice.” You explain.

We needed a powerful Shinobi, one internationally known. Someone not only with the skill to defend our home, but with such a reputation that the other Shinobi nations would think twice before engaging in subversive actions against us, despite our current situation. Once we had decided on those qualifications, it helped narrow down our options considerably. Konoha is home to many powerful Shinobi, but very few have the strength of reputation needed to inspire awe in our foes. As such, we made our choice. We intend to put forward the Sannin, Tsunade Senju, as a candidate for the position of Hokage.” You continue.

Hiashi closes his eyes.

“Sound logic. A fine choice, as well. She meets all the possible qualifications one would expect of the Hokage- that is, except her relationship with Konoha itself, and her temperament. While she is Sannin, her distaste for the shinobi lifestyle is common knowledge. Less commonly known is her distasteful habits of gambling and drinking, but it exists all the same.” Hiashi analyzes.

Erk. Well, she isn’t perfect, but she’ll come around, right?

[Hiashi’s Opinion Unchanged!]

The Hyuuga Elder opens his eyes.

“Tell me, how do you intend to pitch such a person to the clans? And why such a person over someone like Kakashi Hatake, whose relationship with the Fourth and personal skill gives him a clear path to the office?” He questions, his pale eyes staring through you.

Your logic is….

1. Kakashi isn’t ready.

2. Tsunade’s skill is superior to Kakashi’s, and her reputation is second to none.

3. All people have vices- Tsunade’s can be easily handled.

4. Kakashi will follow the path of the Fourth too closely.

>3. All people have vices- Tsunade’s can be easily handled.

I mean that's great and all, but does Hiashi have a problem with the way the Fourth did things? I mean *we* know that the Fourth was obviously a poor leader and whatnot because we're all pro-Root but I thought he was pretty popular in general around the village?
>>
We need to think about how we sell it to the clans. The clans, excluding maybe the uchiha loves the 4th, and don't see option 4 as a negative.
>>
>>2138136
>2. Tsunade’s skill is superior to Kakashi’s, and her reputation is second to none.
The Fourth was a clear choice for a Peacetime Hokage. Indomitably strong, acting as a clear deterrent, but also enough of a dashing rogue and honest sap that he would be received well when he told others to stand down. His demilitarized stance, while useful in the previous political clime, will detrimental to the village as the fallout from the Akatsuki spreads. Likely, the only reason Konoha hasn't been attacked yet is that other villages are shoring up their own borders to prevent a similar incident. They all have tailed beasts, which means they're all targets for an attack like the one we suffered.

This defensive attitude will not be maintained. Eventually, one of them will get the balls to make an attempt on the village. We need someone in power with strength and reputation enough to hold them off while we recover. Kakashi is strong, certainly, and he has a reputation among the nations, but both pale in comparison to one of the Sannin.
>>
>>2138136
>2. Tsunade’s skill is superior to Kakashi’s, and her reputation is second to none.

You take a deep breath.

“There are many reasons we opted for Lady Tsunade over Kakashi Hatake, but I will be concise.” You answer.

“While Kakashi is undisputedly a skilled shinobi that we are lucky to have among our Jonin, there is still a measurable distance between himself and one of the Sannin. The gap becomes even more apparent when we look at it from the perspective of their reputations. While Kakashi is well known due to his skills as the “Copy Ninja”, and his position as both the Fourth’s Student and Second, it does not measure up to Tsunade’s record nor her pedigree.” You assert.

Hiashi doesn’t interject, so you continue.

Tsunade Senju is not only the granddaughter of the First Hokage, and the grandniece of the Second, she stands apart for her contributions on the field of battle. The Sannin are the reason Konoha stood tall at the end of the Second Shinobi World War. The Fourth distinguished himself with battlefield service during the Third Shinobi World War. In comparison to these two, Kakashi simply doesn’t measure up. He is young, and has many years to earn further glory in Konoha’s future conflicts.

Hiashi’s brow furrows.

“Are you insinuating there will be another Shinobi World War?” He asks.

You were ready for this question, no matter how he words it.

A conflict is brewing- if it will be akin to the wars of the past, I cannot say. But we have suffered an attack on our home; a surgical strike meant not only to rob us of our Hokage, but also our Jiinchuriki. The extent of Sunagakure’s knowledge of what the Akatsuki had planned is debatable- we simply don’t have enough information. What we know for sure, however, is that the fallout from their actions will continue to spread. While we have been safe so far, this is likely due to the other nations being cautious towards their own villages being struck in a similar manner.” You explain.

Hiashi is leaning forward ever so slightly- you’ve got him!

It would be entirely irresponsible of us to assume this will remain the case. Eventually, one of the other Shinobi Villages WILL try something. Konoha’s victories over our enemies has put us in a position where we stand tall and proud over our peers- and through the leadership of our Hokage, we have continued to thrive. The Lord Fourth took to his task with gusto- becoming the man Konoha needed after the Third War. The gregarious face we show to the world, the open hand we used to greet our contemporaries.

However, while that was preferable during the times of peace following the war- we are no longer at peace. We require some as indomitably strong as the Fourth, but with a firey will- and the power cause those who would dare attack us to think twice. Tsunade Senju is that person- and I truly believe she is the best fit to become the Fifth Hokage!

Hiashi closes his eyes again.

“The Sannin… very well, I can see the logic behind the idea. The passion of which you espouse it is very convincing, as well. As I’ve said, the defense of our home is of utmost importance to me. Someone with the legendary abilities of the Sannin is uniquely suited to the position, not to mention someone with such a storied lineage. If she willingly takes the responsibility of the position onto her own shoulders, I cannot doubt her reasoning.” He responds.

[Hiashi Opinion +1! Hiashi has agreed to support Tsunade for Hokage!]

Willingly… well, it’s for the best that he doesn’t know about that caveat yet. You’ll convince her yourself if need be.

“So, you will support us?” You ask.

“Indeed. Although, you will need to have more than just my support to place the hat upon her head. I trust you have other supporters in mind?” He answers.

You….

“Of course. The Aburame have already agreed to support our cause.” You announce smoothly.

For the first time you can remember, you see legitimate surprise on his face.

“The Aburame… so you secured the wild card from the beginning? Well played- certainly not who I expected. I doubt the others will expect it either. So; at best, a two-one-one split vote elects Tsunade, or at worse, the vote is tied 2-2…” Hiashi muses aloud.

If the vote is tied, the Daimyo casts the deciding vote, as per Konoha’s charter with the Land of Fire. Leave that part to me!” Father says, flashing his winning smile.

“So, you have it handled. It may not even come to that, if you speak to the other clans. Surely they would see the logic in your choice as well?” Hiashi offers.

He means well, you know, but the other two…. The Uchiha and Akimichi simply aren’t an option.

You explain that….

1. You do not intend to approach the other clans, as with his support the plan work as intended.

2. You do not intend to approach the clans because they are already supporting Kakashi.

3. The other clans rejected the idea.

4. You do not intend to approach the other clans, for “other” reasons...
>>
Remember the rules of espionage Anons
1) Never reveal your source
2) Never name who your allies are
3) At most imply what they can do
4) Actions speak louder than words
In the case of the Aburame, never reveal the hand we have with them until you confirm someone is one side. You dont reveal it because what if your target says no to joining? you've just outed your allies.

The Akimichi are firm supporters of the Fourth's policies, and will be quite against letting go of a time of plenty regardless of their opinions. It's...a question as to how the Uchiha will swing, but it's also doubtful any attempt to push them on our end will work, given our relationship towards Itachi. Moreover, getting them to support a Senju would be difficult at the best of times.

The Uchiha won't vote for Tsunade. Sasuke's new enough to clan politics that MAYBE we can push him into it, but it's doubtful and it'd cause no small amount of friction with the clan if we did.

The Akimichi, the Ino-Shika-Cho trio, might be able to pull to our side, but it'd be better if we didn't. Let the Uchiha feel that not everyone is united against them the big bunch of bloody-eyed babies

“We did consider who could be approached, and decided against both the Akimichi and the Uchiha for differing reasons.” You explain.

“The Uchiha have a…. complicated history with the Senju clan. There are still those living amongst them that were relocated during the Second’s tenure, and due to Fugaku’s passing, Sasuke now leads the Uchiha. For nothing more than stability amongst his clan, I suspect he will be amenable to the concerns of his clansmen.”

As for the Akimichi, they have made themselves known as ardent supporters of the Third, and by extension, the Fourth. I would not be surprised if it is the Akimichi themselves who put forward Kakashi as a candidate, given his relationship with the Fourth.”

Hiashi gives you a slight smile.

“Well researched and informed opinions. Though I should’ve expected no less from the two of you, at this point.”

[Hiashi Opinion +1! Currently at +6]

“I can only hope that you continue to encourage Hinata, Tsuki. She has grown in great strides since you have become teammates- Something I cannot help but attribute to your influence. The two of you will go on to accomplish great things together.” He says, seemingly much more relaxed than before.

You cannot help but smile at the praise, but…

1. No, this is enough for now. Best not to push it [End Negotiation].

2. [PRESS FURTHER!] Speaking of working together….

3. [THIS IS TO PRESS EVEN FURTHER BEYOND!] I’ve been meaning to ask you, where is Neji?

[To PRESS is to take your negotiation beyond it’s intended limits- to gather information the other party is loathe to part with, or to convince them of something they wouldn’t normally agree to! This isn’t something to undertake lightly, however- blindly PRESSING a subject too far might just ruin any previous agreement between the two parties!]

Looks like you've decided against [PRESSING] for now.

Speaking of which, due to your performance in the previous negotiation (it's been a while, I know) and this one, you've unlocked the [PRESS] mechanic! I explained it above, but usually the outcomes of a successful [PRESS] can greatly influence the story overall. Keep a lookout for it in the future!

>>2138400
Correct. Traditionally you'll only be able to press someone during a negotiation where you've performed well- ie, they're more receptive to some of your more outlandish requests.

Think of it as an extra reward for doing well in negotiation segments.
>>
>>2138404
So will we be able to press next time we see him....or will we have to work it up again?
>>
>>2138404
And if I understand correctly, a press, either successful or unsuccessful, will eat some of that influence?

Will it be a trade thing, press x for y or will it lead to another negotiation scene?

>>2138405
Pressing outside of a negotiation will be something you would only be able to do rarely. You don't just drop ROOT or Neji on a person without building up to it, y'know?

As a consolation/clarification, this doesn't mean if you decide NOT to press, you've become routelocked (at least, in this instance), but say you opted to take the risk and press him about ROOT now, and succeeded- you could've avoided that conversation later.

Or blew it entirely. That's the risk inherent to the mechanic if you decide to use it.

There will definitely be times where something radically different is only available through the press mechanic, so it's worth consideration when it shows up.

Correct. It would consume an amount of influence, depending on just how hard you choose to press. That influence is consumed no matter what- and it still opens up a higher stakes negotiation. If you flub it bad enough, it may cause the person to back out of whatever you were negotiating for in the first place.
>>
Best to take it slow. You’re in no rush to recruit him, after all.

“You’re too kind, Lord Hiashi. Rest assured, Hinata is a great friend to me- and any influence I have on her, she equals it on myself.” You say, downplaying the praise.

The lord of the Hyuuga laughs, genuinely, as far as you can tell.

“I meant what I said, Tsuki. Your future together is bright indeed as long as you continue to support each other. Now, not to cut the two of you short, but was there anything else you wished to discuss?”

“No, Lord Hyuuga, that was all.” You say with a polite bow.

Father rises and repeats the gesture. “Once the manor is rebuilt, I insist having you and your family over for dinner! It is only fair.” He says with a smile resting on his lips.

“I’ll took forward to it- and Konoha’s future. Goodnight, you two- I’ll have an attendant see you out.” Hiashi says, standing from his pillow. It takes only a few moments for an attendant to arrive, and true to his word, the man escorts you to the entrance to the compound.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I’d say that went well, my dear!” Father says, the cold of the outside doing little to damper his spirits. “Or should I say, you did well? Either way, everything is on track! We’ll need to let Danzo know, and begin preparing for our next steps!”
“After we talk to Tsunade, right?” You prod.
“Ah- well yes, we do need to talk to Tsuna. I don’t think she’ll be too happy if we bug her while she works, though. It can wait a few days, if nothing else.” He says, his face contorted as if he’s remembering something unpleasant.
“Very well- we’ll cross that bridge soon enough; now let’s get out of the cold.” You shiver.
Your brain runs overtime as you and father summon and re-enter your carriage, beginning the ride back to the facility beneath the ruins of your home.
Possibilities, things unsaid, and the future- not just your future, but all of Konoha’s.
The rest of the night goes by quickly- though the rooms past the vault area of the ROOT compound aren’t as nice as your old bedroom, or even your room at the Hyuuga compound, it’s still home in it’s own way.
The bleak metal walls leave much to be desired, of course- but they can always be dealt with. More than anything, however, it’s Yume’s presence, standing guard over the freshly laundered bedsheets that makes you feel welcome.
As you hug him tightly, you notice that his soft exterior has been freshly washed- Maru’s doing, most likely. At least she hasn’t teased you about him, yet.
Your stuffed tapir squeaks indignantly.
Of course- you have no reason to be ashamed! Yume is as much your guardian as everyone else.
As you set him gently on the bed, you can’t help but chuckle at the absurdity of snuggling with a stuffed animal after all that’s happened; but then again, maybe it’s just what you needed?
As you settle down to sleep grasping the tapir tightly, you decide it isn't worth worrying about.
Your sleep is deep- and thankfully dreamless.
“Rise and shine, Tsuki-dono~”
Maru’s voice. Had you overslept? Surely she could wait a while longer for whatever it was…
“Now, Tsuki-dono, Danzo-san wishes to speak with you. I needn’t remind you how rude it is to keep people waiting?”
You grumble in response.
Her tone is still playful- and besides, Danzo is employed by your family! Why shouldn’t he wait for you on your time?....
“You’ve already missed breakfast, Tsuki-dono. Not that you’d know it down in this maze, but the sun has been up for several hours. Now, come on- before your tea gets cold.”
Ah- well, there’s no arguing with that.
~~~~~~~~

You gently sip the hot tea as Maru brushes the night’s tangles out of your hair. She’s droning on about babysitting your father while the two of them were in the capital- but truthfully, you’re only loosely paying attention. Your mind is fastened tightly on one issue, and one only: the problem of Tsunade Senju.

The woman was something else- a renegade who was never branded as such. Someone who abandoned her village when they needed her most. A consummate drunk and gambling addict who didn’t even have the decency to win. According to Father, the woman was so unlucky that the few times she did win at something, it was taken as an ill omen.

You need a plan- at least, a better one than whatever Father had in mind. For all his talk, you suspect he isn’t very good at dealing with this woman; which means it will fall to you.

How will you approach this? You’ll need to have at least a vague idea….

----------

1. Obligate her. Her family founded this village- surely she has some pride left?

2. Bribe her. Father has made her debts and financial woes quite clear. You could easily have those cleared if she cooperated....

3. Convince her the old fashioned way. You have a way with words- who is to say you’ll need to rely on anything but your silver tongue? If that fails, maybe simple plying with alcohol would help?

4. Wait. Maybe it would be wise to confer with Naruto and Nori when they return? After all, it was Jiraiya that convinced her to come in the first place….

To be fair, the only thing really wrong with Danzo's original iteration of ROOT was his willingness to injure Konoha for the good of ROOT. He came to believe that the interests of ROOT were the same as Konoha, which lead to some of his more treacherous decisions like trying to steal Kakashi's sharingan and assassinate the Hokage.

Seriously, all we have to do to not make the same mistakes is have a "Don't kill/fuck over loyal Konohans" clause. It's that simple.

Your natural charisma hasn’t failed you yet- no reason to believe that it would fall through for you here. Still, if the woman is more agreeable when the sake is on the table, then it would be silly not to have it readily available.

“The Fire Daimyo is- well, he’s a very passionate man. Intelligent too; he and your father feed off each other far too readily for my liking, though.” Maru says, snapping your attention back to the conversation at hand.

“Father can handle himself, Maru. Does it really bother you that much?” You quip from behind your teacup.

You know the answer, of course- she wouldn’t be telling you otherwise.

“You know how your father can be when he gets wrapped up in something- usually it’s just business, or his newest creation. This time, though… The Fire Daimyo’s ambitions reach a lot farther than most realize; and in Yoru-dono he has found a willing partner with the mind and financial depth to make those ambitions reality.” She explains, concern evident from her tone.

You remember the photograph Father had sent back with his letter- back then, it seemed like the relationship between the two was simply a means to an end, but maybe you should’ve paid closer attention? The last thing Konoha needs is another outsider trying to intervene in Shinobi affairs; but that’s exactly what’s going to happen, come the election.

Once Maru is satisfied, you quickly dress for the day and head to the meeting room, where you expect Danzo to be waiting.

You find him sitting quietly, enjoying a cup of what is no doubt Maru’s tea- but it’s his tablemate who shocks you.

“You’re late, girl. Honestly- if any of this is going to work as you intend, you should at least keep to a punctual schedule.”

Across from Danzo, Kogoto Aburame sits, looking quite pleased with herself, despite the criticism.

“Apologies, Lady Kogoto.” You say with a sharp bow. “I hadn’t been informed you would be joining us.”

Ugh. So much for a relaxing morning.

“Apology accepted. Now, sit- Danzo was just enrapturing me with your flawless plan to have a drunken debtor elected Hokage.”

Though he appears to be very definition of stoicism, you’re sure Danzo is hiding a smug grin behind that teacup.
What had you done to earn this punishment….?

~~~~~~~
“That was our logic in selecting Tsunade Senju. There simply isn’t any other candidate that will work with our goals in mind.” You finish explaining.
Thankfully, Kogoto hadn’t made any objections during your explanation, so at the very least, she must not hate the idea.
“If nothing else, your logic is sound, Tsuki. Tsunade could be what Konoha needs going forward. She could also be a disaster. It will be up to you to mold her correctly.” Kogoto says, her eyes closed in thought.
A genin molding one of the Sannin- the absurdity of such a thought is almost amusing.
Almost.
“Tsunade is a powerful Shinobi, as her title as Sannin belies. However- she has kept her woman’s heart all these years. She has let loss poison her ideals- and until now, that poison has rendered her inert- a curiosity, if not an outright cautionary tale for any shinobi.” She warns.
“If you can manage to inspire her, or get her to harden her heart and look at the world as we do, you may yet put your faith in her. Otherwise, she will be completely unreliable, and unsuitable for the office of Hokage.” Kogoto finishes.
I am currently imagining the Matriarch hearing Tsunade's tragic backstory.
“Please, go on. If I am to convince her to change, I’ll need to know why she became this way- why one of Konoha’s greatest would leave so readily.” You ask.
“Hmph, very well. It’s not exactly a big secret, anyway. Lord Hashirama’s descendants were always minor celebrities in their own right, and her departure was no small event.” Kogoto says, her frown causing deep lines to appear around her mouth.
“Death is a Shinobi’s constant companion. It surrounds, and is often involved in, our work- and when we fail, it comes to claim us. Death is the greatest of equalizers; no matter the height of one’s ambition or dreams. Lord Tobirama ensured this was known to all- the wisdom of the time before the villages. However, everyone deals with death differently, and some choose not to at all.” She begins.
“As a young girl, Tsunade was very popular. Being the granddaughter of The First was no small contribution, of course, but it was only of many reasons. Inordinately skilled among her peers, and possessed of looks many women could only dream of, she proved to be one of the brightest lights among her class of Shinobi. As with the other Sannin, the Second War forged them into the people they would become; she lost her younger brother very early on during the fighting. At first, it seemed to strengthen her resolve- she petitioned a young Hiruzen to establish the basis of what would eventually become the role of medical-nin on each squad of shinobi. This is likely one of her greatest contributions to our society, even if Hiruzen was unable to adopt it initially due to the ongoing war.” Kogoto continues.
“She went on to join her Sannin peers in dealing with Amegakure’s Hanzo- which is where her title originates. After that battle, she returned to active service alongside Orochimaru, whilst Jiraiya vanished for a time. As the fighting wound down, she was everywhere at once- serving as head medical shinobi on many fronts, and likely single-handedly minimizing casualties on the Suna front. During this time, she had taken on a paramour of sorts- a young jonin named Dan Kato. It was somewhat scandalous at the time, given Tsunade’s family, but by this time the Senju clan was almost entirely diminished. Seemingly oblivious towards the drama surrounding the relationship, the two were happy.” Kogoto explains.
“Then young Kato died. It happened suddenly, in the final days of the conflict. Despite her skills, she was unable to save him from his wounds, and by all accounts he died in her arms. That, Tsuki, is the day she was truly lost to us. After the war’s conclusion, she left Konoha. Hiruzen attempted to convince her otherwise, but to no avail- to her, Shinobi were simply fools engaging in pointless conflict, bringing themselves ever closer to an early grave.” She finishes.
To be fair, Conservation of Tragedy is still in effect. Minato got pretty much the best childhood in the setting. He's the top of the top, gets the girl, becomes the best around. He beats Orochimaru, who's decades his senior, for the Hokage's hat.
All while you know he's gonna die young and leaving his son an orphan. And I suppose losing that one unimportant genin.
Unlike the rest of the cast, Minato got an awesome backstory and a shitty end, instead of the other way around.
“Her story is not an uncommon one.” Danzo says, speaking for the first time. “It is regrettable, but those who fight for Konoha will always run the risk of death. Our profession is not one where one can often retire, even at our advanced age.”
Kogoto shoots him a look, but doesn’t say anything.
“Shinobi lose parents, siblings, even children. Being able to comprehend the nature of their sacrifice is of utmost importance. However, instead of leaning upon her friends and peers for support, she allowed their deaths to swallow her. At the time, Hiruzen refused to brand her as missing-nin, telling us that she was simply grieving. We believed she would return after some time had passed; even Jiraiya did so. Instead, she drowned herself in her vices, and became the wandering curiosity- one of Konoha’s most famous shinobi, and direct descendant of its founder, living the life of a drunkard and perpetual debtor. Hiruzen eventually refused to accept any reports on her whereabouts, saying she would return to us when she was ready. By the time the Third War had ended and the Fourth had taken the role of Hokage, we had given up any hope of seeing her return.” Danzo says, expressionless.
“Surely something has changed? She did return to Konoha to treat Kushina- and myself, though that was an afterthought.” You ask.
“Maybe, maybe not. She has often sold her skills- or at least, the skills of her subordinate, to support herself. No doubt that was why she was willing to heal you; as for Kushina… I can only think that it has something to do with Jiraiya and the Fourth’s children. The two never really saw eye to eye, but Jiraiya has always been one of the only people able to keep tabs on Tsunade, especially after the choice was made to stop observing her.” Danzo explains.
“...Observed?” You inquire.
“One doesn’t simply “leave” the shinobi lifestyle, Tsuki. It was imperative that we verify she wasn’t switching sides, or offering insider knowledge of Konoha. She was never in any direct danger- and those assigned to her detail considered the post dull. She was simply too large of a loose end to leave floating freely, however.”
“In the end, it was her choice. I can’t say I wouldn’t act irrationally if I were to lose you or Father- but as it stands, she cannot be left to wallow in her own despair as she is. Konoha has need of her.” You state simply.
Danzo’s expression softens.
“When that day comes, Tsuki- I would hope you grieve for me the right way. As my student, strive to carry my lessons forward, to mold and teach them to the next generations. Elsewise, I have lived a long-”
“No, we’re done with this topic.” You pout.
Danzo sighs.
“As you wish. So, what is your intention going forward regarding Tsunade? Time isn’t exactly on our side.”
“I know that-” you pout further. “I intend to speak to her. No bribes or tricks, just an honest conversation. I might wait until she’s loosened up a little, but the conversation needs to happen directly if any partnership with her going forward is to be viable.”
If you believe she can be convinced.” Kogoto chides.
“I do. It would be a different story if she were still wandering the countryside- but she isn’t. Something happened between her, Jiraiya, Naruto, and Nori; and here she is. I simply need to exploit that crack in her armor, just enough to get her to see from our prospective.” You counter.
“Hmph. Your confidence in your words is certainly strong enough, but we’ll if it continues to pay dividends.” Kogoto responds, mouth twisting into a small frown.
“So we shall- though I wouldn’t suggest betting against a Norihime so readily, Kogoto. They’ll surprise you everytime.” Danzo suggests.
You should go reread that thread. We told kogato what she wanted to hear. And as wargle noted in that thread whether we follow through or how we follow through on that is another story altogether.
For even as tsuki has influenced both nori and hinata in going more confident and pragmatic, so too should tsuki be influenced by the two that there are other considerations besides effectiveness and ease. Majorly that we want a strong leader, not a pawn. And breaking or forcing the person to get them to accept the nomination is counter-productive in this case. She HAS to want to take the job or even kakashi would be a better hokage.
Using Kotoamatsukami is an unnecessary risk if there is a diplomatic means of obtaining the same results. In case you didn't notice, it's imperfect and can be broken if others become aware of it, and if that ever happens then we'll have to do serious damage control to keep shit from hitting the fan. Alternatively, we can take the diplomatic approach which would accomplish the same results while completely eliminating the aforementioned risk of backlash if things should ever go wrong.
It's literally the more pragmatic option to attempt diplomacy first.
You forget her service in the shinobi world war. She must have lost other close friends and suffered from PTSD as well but that is in the past. A mother she never knew.
Also. You are committing the cardinal sin danzo did. Equating root and konoha's path. If tsunade cannot be convinced to take up the post, konoha would be better served with kakashi. Because a strong leader who views ROOT poorly is still a much better thing for the village than a weak broken leader who will let ROOT loose.
ROOT does what needs to be done for the villages survivial. In this case it be convincing a worn out old lady to take up our highest post so that ROOT can do its job.
>>
>>2141771
What we have to lose is her fliping her shit and leaving before we can bring in Danzo to do the deed. What we risk losing is time which could be spent elsewhere, what we risk losing is the entire plan because others can convince her of something else and to stay quiet so we dont know that she knows. Learn to espionage.
Only use Diplo first if the target cant then get ridged and defend themselves from a second attempt and finally Tsuki would be thinking "fuck this disloyal cunt whose main value of kage is in the past" eye rape the bitch into wanting to even the score
>>
>>2141768
Because the akatsuki can pull bigger Keikakus off, and one slip up means they could grab bugmama by using our own card against us.
You think it would be that easy?
>>
I don't actually mind her, i do think she is a little melodramatic and a massive hypocrite though. Not on an unforgivable level however.
What im hating here is Tsuki knows we can just eye fuck her into being what we need and we should have nigh zero respect for her because she is effectively a deserter and traitor.
>>
Short version we ain't Naruto so talk no jutsu will not be enough
>>
>>2141783
She is neither of those things because she didnt leave until AFTER the war was over and she hasn't made connections with anybody in the other villages, as was told to us by Queen Beetle.
>>
>>2141784
If you didn't notice she's actually back in the village. So that means they must have already talked to her and convinced her somewhat.
Our job is to find that chink in her armour and crack it wide open.
>>
>>2141785
Technically she did desert her duties, but even Danzo acknowledged that she isn't a traitor.
“I’ll simply go and speak with her. She likely will rebuff at any attempts at misdirection anyway.” you reply.
“And when she turns you down?” Kogoto inquires.
“Won’t happen. You’ll see.” You say with a smirk.
You rise from the table and give the two elder shinobi a shallow bow.
“I’ll be back to report my success soon enough. Thank you for the information, Lady Kogoto.”
The Aburame matriarch simply waves you off. Seems you’ll need to back your words with action before she’ll put any more faith them- but that’s fine.
After all, you have no intention of failing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Hospital seems the most likely place to find the Sannin, so you head from the ROOT facility towards the unadorned grey-white building you’ve become so familiar with over the past few months.

Along the way, the rebuilding of Konoha continues to progress in visible ways. The village has been long clear of rubble, and buildings deemed unsafe have been cleared away. This has resulted in certain areas being available for new developments; something you’re sure your father has kept his eye on since returning. And considering his absence earlier, he’s likely off on business- or he just really doesn’t enjoy being around Kogoto. Regardless, it’s good to see your home on the path towards recovery, slow as it has been.

You aren’t really in a hurry, anyway- if what Father said about Tsunade is true in the slightest, she likely won’t even talk to you until she’s finished working for the day. Not that he is any different, when the throws of inspiration take him.

As you leisurely enter the hospital, you can see Tsunade’s arrival has done wonders for the medical staff. Once worked to the brink of exhaustion suppressing Kushina’s injuries, it was difficult for them to see other patients, let alone perform lengthy operations. As a result, whenever you had stopped by for treatment for your arm, the place had always been packed full of people.

In contrast, the hospital now seems practically empty, save for staff members moving about. The staff members themselves look arguably better rested, too- and likely not on the edge of chakra deprivation themselves. A very strong reminder of Tsunade’s skills, no matter her mental state.

Taking a seat in the lobby, you take a moment to plan your approach. You probably shouldn’t interrupt her, but will she really be any more amenable after a long day of work?

------------------------------

You…

1. Go to Kushina’s room to attempt to speak to Tsunade.

Also, a word on Kotoamatsukami. It will be below a spoiler tag- none of it is new information, but I won't post it all at once without one.

Just because Tsuki knows Danzo has possession of the eye doesn't mean he'll agree to use it. It's a powerful item- something so powerful that when used properly it can completely reroute the narrative. However, for those of you paying attention- there is only one you have access to. Doing so prevents the user for repeating the process for a decade; Danzo does not have the Hashirama cells to counteract this cooldown as they would've in canon. Effectively, this means once it's used, it's out of the story for good. Just a heads up.

Best not to anger her any further than you’ll likely be doing already- so you take the time to make yourself at home in the lobby of hospital.

Occasionally you strike up conversation with the receptionist and any passerby medical-nin who doesn’t look very preoccupied.

Most of them know you by name due to your frequent visits, and inquire after your arm. Usually, this results in praise for Lady Tsunade’s skill, and how happy they are to have her help. Fewer of them also recognize Shizune as a great help separately from Tsunade, which you make note of. Overall, it seems the worst is over for the medical staff- the noble families were already contributing to assist with supplies and tools, and with Father’s return from the Capital, the Norihime Corporation joined in by cutting deals on various necessities and amenities along with offering to handle transportation for these supplies and others.

No surprises that he already handled it, then- Father is usually on top of these things.

After exhausting potential distractions, you settle. According to the medical-nin, Tsunade often splits her time watching over Kushina with Shizune, under strict orders to alert her if her condition worsens. None of them have been bold enough to ask Tsunade directly what type of treatment or cure for the condition she’s attempting, but those with a rapport with Shizune told you that the Sannin’s assistant has the utmost faith in her master finding away to resolve the issue.

You can only hope. For as much as you didn’t agree with Minato, you didn’t wish the man dead- and his wife fought her demon even as her very life force was bleeding away from her. She did not deserve her fate- and her children don’t deserve to lose their mother.

You dwell on this train of thought for a while- and ponder just why Naruto and Nori have been so long away from Konoha. Could it be those split spirits of the Nine-Tailed Fox? Is he keeping them away from the village for everyone’s safety?

The fox… was a problem. Even from your earliest training days with Nori, the chakra of that creature lurked within her. In the exams, you saw just how strong it was- poor Ino was rendered nearly useless because of it, and when the time came to fight it, it could’ve easily overwhelmed you.

She couldn’t control it even then- how could anyone expect her to control half of the demon? Your friend Fuu at least seemed to have a good rapport with her Tailed Beast- Chomei, the Seven-Tails. But the demon fox Kurama was simply different. It was like the monster that lived inside Gaara; craving nothing but destruction. Honestly, it scared you.

Even knowing what the creatures were- it didn't make much difference. They were so powerful that even the village's best had no alternative but to seal it away among the populous.

While you weren't exactly fond of the man, you still have hope that whatever Jiraiya is up to, it will help your friend and her brother.

It’s Tsunade’s appearance that snaps you out of this thought pattern. At first, she doesn’t notice you- she seems preoccupied talking to a few of the medical-nin. It’s as she approaches the exit that she sees you.

“Hey- kid, you look miserable. You didn’t go do something stupid and get yourself hurt again, did you?” She asks blunty, but not unkindly.

“Ah- no, I’m all right. I was just thinking about Kushina-san and how this whole situation came about.” You say, shaking off the negative feelings from before.

“Oh, right. Yoru did say you were teammates with one of those brats- the girl, Nori. They’ve had had a horrible fate thrust upon them; they’ll need to learn how to control the monster within them before they can ever approach society again.” She says nonchalantly.

“I don’t really know why I came, honestly- but those kids were earnest enough that I figured I could give the experimental treatment a shot. That old toad is taking too much on himself, anyway…” Tsunade rambles, resting her forehead in her hand.

“Anyway, why are you hanging out here? If you aren’t sick or hurt, you’re just going to get in the way.” Tsunade chides.

“I actually wanted to say thank you, Lady Tsunade. I didn’t get the chance to before.” You say, bowing your head slightly.

“Eh? Keep your thanks; your dad practically begged me to heal your arm, and he really helped me out, anyway. Just don’t go wasting what I did by putting yourself in danger.” Tsunade says, waving you off.

“Well, thank you all the same. I did wish to speak with you about something else, if that’s alright.” You say, trying to keep her attention.

Tsunade chortles.

“Listen, I don’t need another apprentice, ok? Especially not some foolhardy kid that’s going to end up dead chasing foolish dreams.” Tsunade says flatly.

“It’s not that- trust me. Would it help if I bought you dinner?” You offer.

“Hmph. You buying drinks too? Not that anyone in town would serve you!” She chuckles.

“Sure, we’ll put it on the tab.” You confirm.

Tsunade is silent for a moment- then sighs.

“If you’re that serious about it, fine. But don’t waste my time, alright?” She acquiesces.

Not how you would’ve preferred it, but at least she agreed. Now, where to go?....

While meditating on how worthless Sakura is, I found myself wondering whether Tsunade matters. She fights Orochimaru that one time. What the fuck else does she do? I assume she fights Pain, but I can't remember her doing so. Is there a single female character in this show that stacks up to Naruto, Lee, or even Shikamaru in terms of importance?
>>
>>2142218
She also fights Madara with the other kages. And I think Konan was the least shafted for plot and development among Naruto women (and she died, so that's not great). While best fight for Naruto women was Sakura and Chiyo vs Sasori (and Sakura never has a good fight afterwards ever).
>>
>>2142218
She's a medic
>>
>>2142194
OH BOY, is she in for a surprise or what!
>>
>>2142304
Every time someone says something like that I wonder what picture they're painting in their minds. On-screen, Sakura treats that metal based poison in Sunagakure and Tsunade heals Lee's spine, but that doesn't scale at all when compared to how many lives Pain, Madara, Orochimaru, etc. have ended on-screen. And of course we're left to guess about the off-screen action. And Tsunade sure as fuck wasn't just a medic.
>>
>>2142382
On the subject of Tsunade and Sakura's importance, we have to factor in potential off-screen time that they'd likely be spending fulfilling their roles as combat medics.

Remember that if the Naruto series showed all instances of interactions no matter how mundane or boring to show exactly what the characters do, there would be at least a hundred more filler episodes showing it all. Any instance of Sakura patching up a sliced arm, a knife wound, a broken bone, a street fight she got into, conversations with clan heads at the time; there's tons we could be missing that likely happened that could give more weight to their part. Then you have the fact that she's a Sannin's apprentice, and she had to have been in high demand all over the village.

Tsunade ran a whole ninja village for a time and likely still assisted in the medical comings and goings of the village too, so we can't ignore that bit of the puzzle.
>>
>>2142396
Yeah, dude, I already pointed out that the off-screen action is left completely undefined. Duh. But all they'd really have to do to remedy that is have a character say "we've had X% fewer casualties and X% fewer fatalities since medic-chan started working". Maybe show a cheesy flashback to a grateful piece of canon fodder that lasts for three pages/minutes. The fact that it'd be so easy to do is what makes me unwilling to attribute any value to these physicians.
>>
>>2142228
Even during THAT fight Sakura had to spend half her time being puppeted around by Chiyo, otherwise they'd have had a real problem.
>>
>>2142409
For what it's worth, I distinctly remember a throwaway line from the manga about how the medical services were doing a lot better under Tsunade's rule.

“Thank you very much, Lady Tsunade.” You say, rising quickly out of your chair.

“Why are you thanking me? You’re the one treating me to dinner. Ah- well, it can’t hurt. I’m surprised your father hasn’t offered to take me out for old-times sake; but then again, he did just blow a load of money on me. Probably isn’t too eager to spend more so quickly.” She says with a grin.

She… says that so casually. Is this really the woman you want to be Hokage?

You decide that it would be best to show off a bit here- you’ll treat her to something nice. That rules out Yakiniku Q and even the newly rebuilt Ichiraku. Barbeque and ramen simply aren’t the atmosphere you’re looking for.

After pondering your choices, you vaguely recall visiting Shushu-ya; a restaurant in town that is very popular for its food while also selling its own brand of sake that is locally made. While it isn’t the fanciest, it’s a distinctly “Konoha” experience that should go over well. You’ll just need to spring for a private booth.

“Follow me, Lady Tsunade- I have just the place in mind.” The Sannin wears a quizzical look, but still follows you readily.

~~~~~~~
“Shushu-ya, huh?” Tsunade observes, spotting the sign in the distance as you walk. “Not something I’d expect someone your age to appreciate. I half expected that we’d end up at the Ichiraku family’s ramen place. It was always popular with the kids.”
“Not our destination tonight, but you may still want to stop by sometime- I’d wager Ichiraku is a little different than how you remember it.” You say with a satisfied grin.
“Oh? Konoha has changed some, it’s true. Partially due to the damage from the attack, I suppose.” She says calmly.
She says it like she doesn’t care, but you don’t quite buy it.
“Father’s been very forthcoming in the rebuilding process- and it doesn’t hurt to modernize while we can.” You explain.
The odd look from before returns, and stays plastered on her face until you reach the entrance of Shushu-ya.
~~~~~~~~

“Welcome to Shushu-ya! How many will there be tonight?” the eager young woman working the entrance asks- her question seemingly aimed at Tsunade.

The food smells delicious- in the back you can see many open areas for seating, as well as the built-in bar on the left side of the restaurant. It seems busy, but not overbearingly so.

“Just the two of us. Do you have a private booth or VIP area available?” You ask, asserting yourself.

“Ah, of course! Normally you would need to rent out the private room out ahead of time, so there is a bit of a markup if you wish to do so now, but it is currently available!” She explains, looking somewhat shocked.

“We’ll take it. Forward the charge and our bill for tonight to the Norihime estate.” You say, slipping one of Father’s “Brand Ambassador” cards out from your toolbelt.

A simple black card embossed with the Norihime symbol, it had a blank area on the backside, to filled out for formal “business expenses” that needed to be sent to the estate. Normally, your word was good enough within Konoha, but you had no idea how long it had been since father may have visited here.

Taking a pen from the nearby desk, you quickly fill the card out and hand it to the young woman.

“O-of course, Ms. Norihime. I’ll be back momentarily, I just need to let the manager know- and prep the area for you.” she stammers, taking the card.

You nod, and the woman disappears further into the restaurant.

Tsunade leans over, and you can see the strange look from before has returned.
“We definitely could’ve eaten in the general seating. I enjoy a good meal, but there’s no need to rent out a VIP room for my sake. Then again….”

Tsunade starts laughing.

“Bring it on! It’s been too long since I’ve been properly pampered!”
You’re somewhat taken aback by the outburst, but keep your smile visible. You’re beginning to suspect why Father’s opinion of this woman is what it is….

Moments later, your hostess returns- and it seems her outfit has gotten visibly straighter.
“If you both would follow me, the VIP room will be ready momentarily. Traditionally, the VIP comes with your choice of Sake. If you hand any in mind-” the woman starts.

“I most certainly won’t be partaking. If you would, bring Lady Tsunade here a short list of your best- she will certainly have a better grasp of her preferred alcohol than I would.” You cut her off.

Although you don’t think they would really object to you drinking, especially with the money you’re spending, you’d much prefer to have a clear head going into this.
The women bows her head, and leads the two of you through the main restaurant area, up a half-flight of stairs to an isolated room. Inside, the area is fancifully decorated, and even has a set of glass doors leading out to an balcony for dining. Sadly, the winter weather makes outdoor eating a poor prospect.

Once you’ve taken your seats, the women bows deeply, producing two menus from…. somewhere.

Taking yours, you begin to look through it. Across from you, you hear slight snickering from Tsunade.

….and she calls you the child? Surely her life outside of Konoha couldn’t have been that threadbare.

Returning to your menu, you realize quickly that you have no idea what to eat. The menu has a section dedicated to yakitori, which what you could smell cooking downstairs. You decide on several different flavors, and opt for something sweet to drink.

The yakitori seems to have been a good choice, as Tsunade orders a similar set to yours, along with a bottle of high-grade house sake. After completing her order, she eyes you for some kind of reaction, but you merely smile.

Once the hostess leaves, Tsunade begins openly evaluating you.

“Alright, kid. What is it you’re wanting, exactly? I know Yoru has cash to spare, but this is seriously overkill. I appreciate it, but still.” She questions.

You respond by….

1. Starting strong. It’s Tsuki- not “kid”.

2. Ignoring it, and moving forward.

As for her question….

1. It can wait until after we eat, surely?

2. Be direct- I would like you to become the 5th Hokage.

Kinda expected Tsunade's instincts to be riled by throwing all this wealth around.
>>
Ok, looks like we have some results.

1. and 3. Let's begin!

~Writing~
>>
Dammit. Going for 1 is gonna make her treat us more like a kid and be more dismissive of our proposal.
>>
>>2161560
>>2161611

It's a good thing Tsunade isn't as civilized as Orochimaru!

Because Orochimaru is a fantastic liar, when it suits him. Playing diplomacy with him would be borderline impossible.

Tsunade isn't nearly as refined. Also, she just plain gives less of a shit.
>>
>>2161620
If she thinks we're a kid we can get her drunk as shit much easier.
>>
>>2161620
Yeah, she's just going to brush us off as a kid trying to act important.

Pick your battles, guys.
>>
>>2161625
If she treats us like a kid, why would she take our asking her to be hokage seriously.
>>
>>2161620

Depends how Tsuki phrases the demand. If it's a childish pouting sort of request, take me seriously damn it, yeah, treated as a kid.

If Tsuki insists on her name but does it with a more serious gravitas, indicating that discussion is getting heavier and masks are coming off, as Tsunade has figured out, then she seems like she may oblige. We'd have to live up to it though.
>>
>>2161620
RELAX maybe once anons realize that trying to play hardcore with Tsunade won't work they may consider do something else.
>>
>>2161627
By not behaving like one. Come on anon it isn't that hard. Show what you are with action not with words.
>>
>>2161630
Hope its the later. Based off her reaction we might have overplayed the money hand a little bit even though we had other considerations and it would not be hard for her to pigeonhole us as a rich ojou using up her father's money to impress people.

Well even if it comes to a mistake, it should be recoverable.
>>
>>2161627
Because once we start getting into the serious political shit she would have realized that she misjudged us. All we've done is solidify her initial uncharitable impression, which will make things more difficult.
>>
>>2161630
I think that is a risk we shouldn't have taken but it's too late now.
We haven't entered [Debate Mode] so maybe we'll just end up rolling for it.
>>
>>2161639
That's a good point that I wish was raised eariler. Rich girl using daddy's money to impress...yeah, definitely see how that happens.

I mean at the end of the day Tsuki is a kunoichi, but Tsunade hasn't seen Tsuki in action, so uncharitable impressions do seem pretty possible.
>>
>>2161627
Besides we should be trying to make her come to this decision by herself and make it NOT look like were trying to manipulate her to be Hokage. She needs to think she came to the choice on her own without us.
>>
>>2161664
I'm pretty sure we're way past the point where she'd think that we didn't have a role in her decision.
>>
>>2161664
What. I dont think that was the plan.

Even if DEBATE MODO is not active, whenever it comes to direct character interactions on a one-on-one basis, always be wary. If people don't like the way you say or do something, it can always carry over to when the negotiation DOES begin.

My goal is to only use straight charisma rolls for non-important choices, in-mission skill usage, or in situations where you literally cannot convince them to agree with you other than using some pure, unfiltered Talk-no-jutsu.

Still writing. Coming soon.

>>

I doubt it would have been negative. And Hinata's response basically confirmed it would be taken poorly.
>>
>>2161689
I think he means we aren't smooth enough to convincing Tsunade to become Hokage without thinking we were encouraging her to do it.
>>
>>2161695
Oh...well then that was my bad. We do have to little information in what could possibly make her want the job.

I know one think that could but that is meta-knowledge. Or was it mentioned she wanted to develop a medical system to konoha before?
>>
>>2161689
Both cases where we upfront told them what we wanted out of them and convinced them it was in their interests to align with us, and they were already disposed towards the idea.

Convincing Tsunade to become Hokage and make her think it's her own idea? That is some next level shit right there.

>>2161695

Pretty much.
>>
>>2161711
We dont know that yet though we do know of her involvement in standardising attachments of medical nins to squads.

Hoping we can shoot the breeze with her abit and find out what naruto and nori. Something they said to her convinced her to make the trip home and im hoping we can build on that.
>>
>>2161715
When you guys actually pull a full-blown inception, I'll be impressed.
>>
>>2161715
Still think we could do it with more info. But what's done is done let's see what we can get from this dinner.
>>
>>2161719
Well we could mention of the soldiers that were leafted wounded once the crush happend and tell her that becone a hokage would make it easier to implant her system.

Now that i think about it with a medical nin the Aburame wouldn't need to such the chakra from the fallen shinobi and give it to others. I know at the mome t it was necessary but that shouldn't be the normal procedure

“First- my name is Tsuki Norihime. For someone treating you to dinner, you could at least use it over “kid”.” You say, opting for a formal tone.

Tsunade’s brow twitches.

“Listen, kid. Just because you volunteered to feed me using Yoru’s money doesn’t mean I owe you anything, alright?”

[Tsunade’s Opinion -1! Currently: -1]

“O-of course, I didn’t mean to insinuate that you did. How do you know my father, anyway? He avoids telling me the stories when I ask.” You ask, trying to change the subject.

Damn- you hadn’t expected her to be that touchy. Best to stick with “Lady Tsunade”, for now.

Tsunade’s expression softens.

“It’s a long story- and not a particularly happy one. We spent some time together traveling with some mutual friends of ours- it was around the time your father was first getting started with his business ventures, if I remember right. It was when he met your mother, too.” She explains.

“That would mean that most of those people-” You start.

“Are dead, yes. When your mother died, it left just Yoru and I with those memories.” She murmurs.

She… actually looks sad. Was she closer to your parents then Father had implied?

“You could’ve visited. I think Father would’ve liked that.” You offer.

Tsunade leans back into her chair.

“Maybe. In general, I’ve chosen to keep my distance from people- so they don’t get hurt. Yoru’s natural luck has to be the reason he’s still safe- it acted to counter my own rotten luck.”

Tsunade has withdrawn a little- though you cannot tell if her sullenness will be as short lived as her previous anger.

As you consider this, her sake arrives.

“The food will be out in just a moment. We thank you for your patience.” The server says.

“Of course.” You say, dismissing her.

Tsunade still looks rather sullen.

Enough of this- it’s time to actually break the ice.

You learn forward, taking the time to slowly pour Tsunade some sake. You’ve never done it before, of course, but you’ve seen it poured plenty of times-

-aaand perfect!
You set the bottle down with confidence, and look for a response.

Tsunade is smirking- though you aren’t entirely sure why.

“Well, you poured it! So don’t mind if I do!~”

Before your eyes, the sake vanishes.

“Ah~”

[Tsunade opinion +1! Currently: 0]

“This place was a good choice. I’ll need have Shizune get another bottle…” Tsunade mumbles to herself.

“Lady Tsunade- could you tell me about my mother? It can be hard to get an honest opinion from those around me; and you traveled with her, at least. Even now, I don’t know a whole lot about her…” you ask.

It’s the truth. You know vagaries- but Father had always kept the stories that way on purpose. Danzo didn’t know her very well, and there wasn’t anyone else in Konoha that could speak to her as a person.

“Hm… Asa, huh? It’s certainly been a while… But if you want my opinion that bad? Sure.” Tsunade says, meditating on your question.

You pour her another glass of sake.

“Heh- you’re a sharp one. Though, that doesn’t surprise me, considering your parents…” She comments, the smirk from before returning.

I have a sudden gut feeling that negotiations are somehow going to lead to a bet between Tsuki and Tsunade.

“Asa was… a character, to be sure. By the time I met her, she had already left Kumogakure, and was kicking around with your father and the rest of the ragtag group that had accumulated. He had hired me for some protection, then- I charged him an entirely outlandish amount, too. But he paid it- no questions, no complaints.” Tsunade explains.

“Your mother was a flirty one. She had no issues using her feminine charm on weak mean to get them to do her bidding. Underneath it all, though, I think she was lonely. That’s probably why her and Yoru got along so well- they were both lonely people at heart, putting up a front to fool the world.” She analyzes.

“Her skills couldn’t be argued with, though. She took on all sorts of foes, and while she didn’t always come out on top, she always survived, which is more than many can say.” She says bitterly. “Had she not left Kumogakure, I’m sure her skills would’ve had a large influence on the war that followed. But she did- she left, sick of Kumo, sick of war. She probably lost someone close to her- I can relate to that.”

“We lost companions, but Asa stuck by us. She was a true shinobi- and a mother to be proud of. When I had heard that she’d died in childbirth… to be honest, I was ashamed. She was a friend; someone I could’ve helped. Maybe that’s why I kept my distance from your father after that? It’s all long past, now.” Tsunade finishes.

You pour her another drink.

“I should probably wait on our food- but why not.”

Another drink vanishes.

“Hm? What for this time?” She muses somberly.

“You’re the only other person I’ve been able to speak to about her- at least, that knew her. You spoke about her as a woman first, and a shinobi second- the way father does. It’s hard for him, so I try not to ask him to recall those painful memories.” You explain.

“Being a shinobi is a job, Tsuki- try not to let it define you. You will always be more than the collective result of your training and combat experience.”

[Tsunade’s Opinion +1! Currently +1]

Huh, she actually used your name. It’s a start, at least.

On queue, your food arrives- and not a moment too soon for your poor stomach.

Both of you begin your meal, though you take the time to pour Tsunade drinks occasionally as they are needed.

Tsunade definitely seems to enjoy the food, and digs in with gusto- though it only marginally slows down her drinking.

You’ve… never actually seen someone drink this much in a single sitting. Through your conversation earlier and the drinks with her food, you realize the bottle is nearly half finished.

Tsunade squints at you from across the table.

“It’s rude to keep track of a lady’s drinks, y’know.” She pouts.

“I’m simply keeping track so I know when to order more, Lady Tsunade.” You say truthfully.

Tsunade laughs, and as she does so you can see the slight color rising in her cheeks.

“You sound a lot like your dad, Tsuki. Definitely something Yoru would say. Y’know, when you first asked me to come to dinner with you, that’s what I thought it was about. Another one of Yoru Norihime’s crazy schemes! Did he ever tell you about the time he won a whole casino in a game of poker, then proceed to get the shit kicked out of him by the eventual Raikage?” She questions.

Uh… what? You can’t say you’d heard that one.

“I mean, obviously he came out alright. But man- that takes some serious guts! What I wouldn’t give to have even an ounce of Yoru Norihime’s self confidence! It had to have been his luck, though. He has to be the luckiest man alive- but I could never get him to try his hand at slots. Kept telling me that they were rigged! Although, he might’ve been right.” Tsunade laughs.

I'm sorry in advance, anon.

I appreciate the heads up! I have this weird thing about commissioning my own characters, even from artfags who I'm friends with. I figure that if I manage to inspire anything within them, they might create something nice for me to see.

It's all basically a bonus. For me, especially. Means people enjoy them enough to spend time with them, separate from myself, to create art.

Makes it more rewarding than commissioning an artist directly, I guess.

I can't really describe it well, so ignore me. Post incoming.
>>
>>2162104

Give us more interesting scenes~ Otherwise I'll have to commission more lewds.

“Well, we are talking about Yoru Norihime, here. There is no plan too outlandish, no scheme too complicated!” you laugh, playing along.

“But yet- he never give up!” Tsunade responds. “I know they are all over the place now- but his first launcher? It was little more than a club! It jammed up and broke the first time he even tried to use it, and he ended hitting a guy over the head with it!”

You continue sharing stories of your father with Tsunade for a time. It’s.... actually relaxing. As much as you admire your father, it’s good to see that he is ultimately human, and that others can see the humor it.

[Tsunade’s Opinion +1! Multiplied by drunkenness! Drunk multiplier x2! Currently +3!]

“All jokes aside, he does have several things in mind, especially for Konoha. The attack really shook him. According to him, it was the first time the main village had been attacked directly since the 2nd Shinobi World War?” You ask.

“Mm. He’s talking about the air raids from the Land of the Sky- very close to the beginning of the war. Before I or any of the Sannin were fully active on the warfront. They had a massive fortress that could fly- though nobody ever figured out exactly how it was powered. Eventually, it was destroyed, though it’s remains weren’t ever found. I can understand the concern.” Tsunade explains.

It was easy forget the age of the woman before you, just by looking at her. She didn’t look a day over 30, but here she was recalling events from nearly 40 years ago. A side-effect of her medical prowess, maybe?

“Whatever your father might be up to, I can only hope his luck holds true. Konoha could certainly benefit from it.” She says somberly, taking another drink.

“And what about your luck, Lady Tsunade? You mentioned it earlier, saying Father’s cancelled your out, at best.” You say, testing her willingness to proceed.

Right we probably should start slowing down the alcohol.

I say we increase the dosage doc!

Agreed, since drunkenness multiplies gains, more drunk = more gains!

Disagree. We need her sober to understand exactly what we're getting at and its seriousness. Also her emotions are easily swayed and it could easily go back down x2. Furthermore, in business any contract with an intoxicated person can be annulled.

>>2162117
>>2162119
It's going to be one of those things that gets better and better until the other shoe drops and we get fucked over by her inability to understand our points.

Just be content with what we have to work with, and use it as best we can.

I concur, keep here level where it is.

[Tsunade’s Opinion Meets the Requirements!]

“Probably an understatement.” Tsunade says, matter-of-factly.

“My bad luck is practically legendary. Lost money, failed missions- you name it, my mere presence causes it. The casino owners call me “The Legendary Sucker” behind my back- because my luck is that bad. I love to gamble, but I always lose. It’s been that way since I was small.” She explains.

There's a sorrow behind those eyes that she isn't explaining. Seems she isn't drunk enough to forget her pain.

“Well, almost always. But I’ll tell you this much- whenever I win, something awful always happens. Strangely enough, before Jiraiya and those two kids found me, I had just won a around at the slots. I’d been planning on leaving town after that, but Shizune convinced me to stay. And look where I am now- getting drunk with a genin.” She laments.

“Only one of us is drunk, Lady Tsunade.” You tease.

“Ah- a shame. Then again, Yoru doesn’t drink much either, does he? Mm. I never could find anyone that could keep up with me- other than Jiraiya. But he makes for a poor drinking partner.”

She’s rambling, now- maybe giving her a topic to focus on would be a good idea?

-------

1. Why do you drink, Lady Tsunade?

2. Why did you agree to help Naruto and Nori?

3. Konoha really does need your help, Lady Tsunade.

We do genuinely need your help though, tone it with humor keep the drunk in the happy space. Do bad impressions of Nori and stuff. But end on a somber, we really do need your help though, my father when he spoke you you said you were great. We need Great now, Konaha is in trouble, plus *gently punch her shoulder* who is gonna represent us girls!

“So- before my dad made you his offer, anyway- why did you agree to help Lady Kushina? You said yourself you had been planning on leaving town.” You ask.

She frowns, but in more of an annoyed way.

“It’s all that damned Jiraiya’s fault. I just wanted to enjoy my travels, but people always manage to find me, to beg me to heal them. Usually I just say no- sometimes, if folks are willing to pay, I’ll have Shizune heal them. She’s learned a lot since-”

Tsunade stops, and refocuses.

“Anyway, I rarely heal people directly. So Jiraiya finds me- and brings your two friends. Tells me that they’re the children of the 4th Hokage! I don’t really care, of course- and I said as much.”

“But then Jiraiya tells me what’s happened in Konoha- that Lord Hiruzen was killed, and that the 4th vanished after the attack. At first, I just kind of blew him off- the Hokage is a job for idiots with a death wish, after all- but then he shows me the seals on the kids. Tells me how, even without their father, it was Kushina who stood up to the Nine-Tails, and that with the last of her ebbing life force, she and her children separated the Nine-Tails into two beings, and sealed one into each of her children.” She explains.

“Now, sealing is a complex art- far more than just hiding kunai in paper. But the Uzumaki? They’re the best at it; legendary even. It was no small accomplishment, and probably saved Konoha from being utterly destroyed. But what would Kushina receive in return? What would her children get in turn for losing their mother? One would be dead, and the two children would live a life of pain- of knowing they house a monster inside of them, and that at least one of not both of their parents were dead.” She mutters bitterly.

“I’ve seen a lot of loss of life, Tsuki. Too much. When it’s the result of one’s own dumb choices or actions- well, such choices earn their just rewards. But those kids- they had willingly sacrificed their bodies to house the Nine-Tails! Their Father had vanished, and their mother was dying. I… I needed to help them. To try. Only with my abilities could a potential solution be attempted, no matter how low it’s chance of success was. I’ve been working on it almost nonstop, but I just *know* that the solution will work.” she rambles.

“I guess… I needed to reward them. For being stronger than I was. Because despite everything that had happened to them, despite every horrible thing life had thrown at them….”

“Those damn brats hadn’t given up. Not like I did.”

Oof, I'm fucking tired folks.

But we've reached a serviceable place to stop in the sad story of our favorite old woman, so I think now is a safe time to pass out.

Thanks for sticking with this slow old Wargle, everyone! With the holidays upcoming, I cannot promise a thread before the 26th- very likely too much travel involved. But! I hope everyone tunes in for the next thread, where we'll rap up our quality time with Tsunade, and move forward to our destiny!

@WargleQM for complaints and criticism

I should have a nice gift ready for you all tomorrow, so stay glued to the twitter! Hopefully it can help tide you over.

With that, this Wargle is gonna go pass out. Feel free to use this thread's remaining space as you will! I'll make sure to have it recorded properly on the archive.

Goodnight, everyone!

Reminder! A method of powering father's airships and achieving his dream of human flight has been developed, and we can bring it up to him at any time.

https://pastebin.com/uNX3Y5y3

TL;DR, fire chakra sealed in tags allows for high enough fuel density that weight is no longer an issue, and is even reproducible, so airships can be mass produced, rather than just being a one-off wonder of the world.
