You are Captain Anode, and things could really be going better right now.

You are a pebble in a stream, where the stream is an invading army of marauding assholes laying waste to a city in the grips of a race riot. And like the pebble, all you’ve really managed to do is get them to go around you.

That, and your dolphin buddy really needs a hand.

Turning in the ruined street, debris raining down from the CF-0 you just destroyed, you comm her again. “Copy. Where?”

She answers with a blue bolt into the sky from a few blocks away, exploding into a miniature neon sun--a flare of some kind. You throw on the dash and bolt in that direction, taking a few potshots at the back of a retreating CF-0’s giant head as you move.

You sling on a coil around another building to see plasma ripping up the road below--Delphi’s chaser swings left and right, barely a step ahead of a pair of mavericks--Road Attackers. You’ve come just in time for the end of the chase--veering to avoid a huge chunk of rubble from a damaged skyscraper, one of the aggressors speeds ahead, the pair falling into a loose circle around her as they cut off their prey on the destroyed road.

They don’t fare so well when you come down on them with a warhead.

The road’s already smashed to pieces, so if anything your meteoric impact clears it a little--plunging your fist down through the engine block of the maverick’s car, the entire thing goes up in a colossal fireball, driver and all. You contort in midair and line up your busters, peppering it with shots as its attack suddenly reverses momentum. You blast the shroud off the engine and a final bolt from Delphi helps put it down.

“Thanks,” she says, taking a moment to inspect the side of her Cheval--smoking from a few fresh shots, but still working. “Getting reports that they’re going right for Beşiktaş, even though they’re taking losses.”

“Meaning they’ll ignore problems to get there?”

The blue dome around her head coalesces and forms a three-dimensional map--a bright blue line cuts through a model cityscape. “This route’s the fastest,” she says. “I’m routing responders to clear it now. You’ll get to the business center before they do. Hit them from the side.”

You don’t wait, dashing to a building and leaping, jumping wall to wall, window to window as you pour on the Raikousen.

“What’s your plan?” You ask as you go.

“Find any unsecure hub and set up shop,” she replies. “I’ll keep coordinating movements in this sector and then find somewhere else to move to.”

You can hear the distant thuds of the marching CFs through the city, a steady, building drumbeat accompanied by shouting and plasma fire. The path Delphi cut for you zigzags through blind alleys and turns you might have dashed right by. Occasionally you hear pockets of fighting from the surrounding streets, and you don’t think all of it’s maverick-only.
>>
>>2146518
Those drum footsteps grow louder again as you close in--beeline or no, they’ve taken their time to take chunks out of a few buildings. You navigate another cramped turn to find a long stretch of highway, absent the towers… and the march of the maverick front line just arriving with you.

I have an inexplicable feeling that they might ignore problems to get where they're going, so harrying might not work so well. If they have a plan to enact that will be worth their losses, it's best to go for whomever is coordinating that, carrying a payload, etc.

Hello MHQ players!

Some time ago I started participating in a tabletop MHQ game based on the rules doc written by one "guy_with_the_parrot." It was a homebrew of a Metroid Marines tabletop game, and was fun, but pretty shortly I noticed that the rules were a little insufficient to cover everything that MHQ could be. I therefore took it upon myself to edit, amend, and clarify the entire thing.

I wrote every change and new section with the goal of clarity and improvement, but it wasn’t 100% my own work. I sought and took the advice of other players in the campaign -- up to and including Hunter Command. (They play an angry Welsh butterfly fairy.) This doc retains as much of the previous structure as possible while covering most every important rule that needed to be there but wasn’t. There's even a table of contents!

So here it is. Enjoy 21,000 words worth of rules by which you and your friends may become a super fighting reploid.

ADDITIONS EVENTUALLY: Detailed rules specifically for human Maverick Hunters; detailed rules specifically for deployable vehicles, mechaniloids, and reploid subordinate units.

The less infrastructure gets destroyed, the less dangerous those tiny mechaniloids are, and sowing discord won't slow them down if they don't care.

Tumult Shell sounds good for lobbing into the mechaniloid bays of CF-1s and general mobs of smallfry, but I have doubts on how much that would actually reduce their total destructive power.

Was waiting for a thread to post these, by the way.

Maybe someone picks up the Megaman comic license like with IDW and Sonic, then you could see if they need a writer
I mention this because I remembered the time someone noticed that the Archie comic mentioned the different Hunter divisions and thought it was a MHQ reference.

Funny story, actually--I'm friends with a very good friend of Ian Flynn. A few years ago, a mutual of ours suggested I put out feelers towards getting a writing gig on Archie MM, but I think it came across a bit manipulative or something, that friend wasn't really thrilled. We're both writers that are massively into Megaman, so it could be it was an 'if there WAS an opening, I'd want it first' kind of deal.

Anyway, no harm or hard feelings, just an interesting tidbit.

Also, writing is in progress but holy damn my hands are cold, I think I need some tea.

We are not the only hunter here, but the issue is that we are one of the higher up ones. The army and troops can handle mechanoids, but artillery, stronger officers, and possible mechariders would be a threat to the likes of Berets or human soldiers.

Wish we knew what types of mechanoids they had. We could prioritize ones that would harm civvies and infrastructure more.

You decide against a conventional flank--you might do more damage to their forces, but they’re going to carry off whatever objective they have in mind.

Instead, you rappel ahead on two more lines, a third latching onto the side of the lead’s bay--you whip around as it pulls its arm back, spooling out extra line to hook around the elbow, rather than snap across it. You swing yourself in at a sharp angle, and you’re just hearing the start of them firing out at you when you pour on the boosters and rocket into the hangar bay stomach from the front on a blazing jet of blue-white flame.

You feel a crunch of impact followed by a much louder, angrier crunch of impact, slamming a maverick body into the rear wall. You spring back as a crisscross of fire--and a wave of ice--slash across where you were standing. You fire a pair of Tumult Shells as you land, predicting the lanes of fire as you crouch to avoid plasma raking the air between them. The shells sail on, growing brighter and brighter until, with a pressure-ripple through the air and a sound like a bomb blast in a window pane, the shells explode under the incoming fire. The two thumps rock the compartment, giving you a moment to break to the side in a lunge, avoiding another withering salvo as you leave them another pair of shells to chew on, rather pleased with the sprawling bodies hauling themselves upright.

You glance around the compartment now that you have a moment more than flashes of motion and reflex--an imposing figure is snapping a solid-alloy--and blazing--sword to his side, while the figure you tackled into the back wall is actually almost as large as Collide, massively armored and looking more annoyed than damaged--a sizable scorch across her chestplate aside--as she hunches forward into a brutish ready stance. Among the mechaniloids and production infantry, one odd man out, though just as small and unassuming-looking, pulling himself to his feet. And, in the middle--

“Hi there,” Seven calls cheerfully, unloading a massive, flickering black torrent of plasma from his buster. You snapfire another pair of shells as you dash forward--

Only to wind up right back where you were. Only the shells, taking the hit dead-center, save you, shattering instantly as a nimbus of spiral-explosions cascade around it on all sides--all but the exact center. It doesn’t exactly feel great--you cast about quickly for the cause of your abrupt relocation, the air rushing back into the vacuum that Seven’s calamitous shot left in its wake.

“Anode, Eviction. Eviction, Anode,” Seven says, face disgustingly smug as he gestures to the diminutive maverick with his massive buster--the end of which is taking on a red-hot glow once again.
>>
>>2149033
I remember when I collected a bunch of new robot skulls for my castle. I remember when you just started accepting that birds = death.
>>
>>2149082
You snort--then explode into action as another withering barrage scythes through the air. You break left--then leap right as, sure enough, you wind up exactly where you were. You lash out with another coil, thrashing them at Eviction’s feet. He stumbles, just in time for you to bolt another coil to his chest, yank him forwards, and then, taking a two-handed grip on the line, engage Shriver and twist.

You clear the decks with Eviction before cutting the line, sending him sailing out of the command compartment and out into the city behind you.

“Well, with a name like that…” You reply to Seven, shooting him an infuriating grin right back.

Your Lockon Hunter flies, but like your spars, Seven is moving before it’s even flashed from the barrel. You fire another pair of shells to ward off his counterattack, but a scything line of blue from the hulking one at the back smashes through them, shattering shield, ice, and all, a howling gale of blacklight spiraling through the glittering mass. It--

Reality blips, and you feel motion, chest sizzling and shields flashing as you suddenly find yourself soaring backwards, the city skyline looming overhead again.

Seven’s voice crackles in your ear--on the old 4th Overland secure frequency. “Oh, that felt every bit as good as I hoped it would. Have fun, Anode!”

A moment later, that sword-wielding maverick impacts before you, landing on one knee, head bowed, before drawing himself up with a single step forward, unlimbering that flaming blade.

“Behold, and quake with fear, for you face the Sword of Samarkand, Dammahnation Blade! It was I who destroyed the Himalayan Stratodome - I who laid low the vaunted Warden Dromedar! The celebrated Hunter, Jet Jackalope, fell before me, and the streets of Montreal burned. Who scarred Mu Qinglong? Who learned the arts of destruction from Komodo Green himself? Who shall carve out the heart of Turkey and cast it into the Black Sea? It is I! Come, Hunter! Dammahnation awaits you!”

Do you know who I am? I am the Juggernaut Bitch!

Juggernaut Bitch

Rank S+

Used to be know as Cerberus but hated the name and refused to be upgraded with two extra heads.

A giant Reploid with a canine face, she is not the fastest Maverick around, but she is very very strong.

She can also cause localised Earthquakes.

Was ranked S class as a Hunter. She received a S+ rank after she murdered a S class Hunter, a whole city and a squadron of A rank hunters all by herself. Although she ended so injured we thought she had died, we were wrong.

That S+ rank is threat rating only, a fancy way of saying you won't get more pay that by killing the last S class you hunted.

"But why me?"

>>
>>2149683
I actually only have stats of them as an enemy since I used them so long ago and all I have are a bunch of really fucking obtuse notes on it rather than something that someone can read and understand at the moment. Basically though, all vehicles types get a set of chess like movement options. More options outside their normal maneuvers are added based on vehicle type depending on how many missions a proficient driver has used the vehicle type for (with initial points on character creation being from Operate Vehicle). There's a variable speed value (0(not moving)-5 with different top and bottom ends for different vehicle/vehicle types), acceleration and breaking, which determine how quickly they speed up and slow down on the speed scale (both ranging from 0-3 normally, 0 being things like gliders and unpowered transportation). When they're at a particular speed they are restricted to certain sized versions of the particular maneuvers.

>>
>>2149890
Maybe emergency-call HQ, tell them we need a very specific bit of video to afflict enemy morale?
>>
>>2150110
I feel like they wouldn't appreciate the subtleties of our machinations. Maybe if they had a psyops department.

...Do the Hunters even do psyops?
>>
>>2150110
Why call HQ when we could call India, there is approximately zero chance she doesn't still have the file handy and she's got no stick up her ass and plenty of reason to dunk on Seven.
>>
>>2150115
I want to say "probably not." Who would they use it against? By which I mean, where would they find a significant Maverick population and -not- rely immediately on physical force to neutralize it?

Also, the UN would have to be pretty leery of allowing a majority-reploid organization to practice weaponizing psychology. Smells Mavericky.
>>
Morning, folks.

So I've got yet another busy day, but I ought to be able to get in a post or two. I might try to get ambitious and bake the giant mountain of cookies I owe as Christmas care packages and presents for people at work, but I also might totally not do that.

“Hi,” you say, before Anode can work his jaw to ask what the fiddly fuck, “I’m Em.”

Dammahnation turns and sweeps his blade around, leveling it on you. “Another challenger! Step forward, then, if you are prepared to face wrath and ruin alike!”

You look past him, to Anode. “I’ve got this,” you comm.

“Roger that. I’ll go after the little guy I chucked.” He turns and dashes deeper into the city, after the frontline of CF-0s, while the maverick just keeps. Fucking. Talking.

He flourishes his blade once, twice, each sweep casting his features--curled horns, reverse-joint legs, and a hulking, looming posture, a good three or four feet on you, all contribute to an almost satanic cast to him.

You spring forward somewhere between the third and fourth twirl of his stupid fuckoff fire sword.

“Desola--!”

Dammit Nathan Braid quickly corrects into an upward stroke with his sword, but you’re already inside his guard, flambard unslung and arcing down from above, lashing across his wrist as you swing two-handed to his one. You bat the weapon down, back-hand already leaving the grip as his fingers spasm and shields flash, the algorithms not at all primed for a cut across the hands. You cut the blade as he levers his size to try to backhand you, stepping past (and under) with your momentum. You turn it into a pivot at the hip and jump backwards into him, tapered edge of your elbow kris striking dead-on the chestplate. You feel his cloven boots leave the ground as it springs from its trick-release, flambard juggled out to cross-draw and cut. He reels, trying to tighten his grip on his flaming blade, but it slips another inch from his fingertips as it goes one way and he goes the other.

A momentary flash and a chime from your subprocessor remind you to bob low as a sizzling beam of energy scythes from his open hand where your head was. Back in front of him now, he missteps, trying to go for his sword and overextending even further. You reverse the kris into a wide overhead arc, carving a line across his shields again and back down into his sword hand, pinning it down. Your free hand wraps around the hilt of the solid alloy weapon as his eyes widen, a chain of explosions ripping down the street from its length as he panic-fires a weapon you’re not on the business end of.

And then, you reverse again, and with an intensely satisfying whack, you mollywop Domination Bland a good sixty feet away with his own fucking sword.

He hauls himself up to his full, commanding height--realizes you’re still holding his fuckoff flame sword--

And immediately beams out.

Asshat.

“Gopher, Em.”

The CO, such as he is, picks up fast, at least. “Go ahead.”

“Routed a big goat looking mav. If he shows up, let me know and we’ll have another chat.”

Despite your disdain for him, you hear a chuckle. “Copy.”

...Right. Back to work.

Fun as it might be to take home and tinker with, you throw the sword into a broken fountain--it’ll just slow you down on your way to the water. Besides, you’ve got plenty of sabers already.

You can’t dispel your unease as you sprint through the side streets, listening to the shouts and weapon reports--those are not Reploid voices.

At a barricade of overturned cars, you don’t miss a crumpled body fall, headless--and a man raise a buster pistol overhead, to a chorus of cheers.

You tamp it down and keep moving. You can’t. Not them.

Reaching the water, at last, lets you forget it for a moment. Amphitrite, S-class, is out there, down there. Somewhere. And so’s the Sixth.

You speed forward, leaping from a burning dock and hitting the water in time with your boots, the thrust kicking up a spray of water that glints in the flame behind you. A moment of airtime, and you come down again, blasting off the surface of the water with each slaloming dash. Out, and out, and out…

And then, she strikes, the water roiling below you as a massive whirlpool engulfs the inky black surface, chopping the seas and breaking the tension--and your timing. You slip into the dark, the seafloor rising to meet you as your optics adjust to the growing dark, and you hear her laughter.

Your lone dueling blade springs to light at your side, as you sink.

“This is Umbrâs,” you comm, looking out over the water as the latest whirlpool settles out, “I have Rezador in sight.”

“We hear you,” Cojocaru responds. “And how is our friend behaving?”

Before you’d deployed from the campus, the leading hunter--Gopher, his name was--sent out a private message to all those assembled. ‘Watch out for Rezador.’ You immediately declared that a Someone Else sort of problem, and kicked that word of warning back to your handlers. Naturally, they decided that it was now, officially, Your Problem.

You chance a lean out of your alley--aside from the glimmer of fires, this block is nearly pitch black, but you’re not the only one who can see in the dark. “Surprisingly well,” you remark. “But he’s having some trouble.”

“Situation?”

Rezador was, of course, a known agitant. Volatile, cold, calculating, brutal, relentless. Everyone knew about Los Mortales, but when they went silent, the rumor that they had rejoined the organization they so famously rejected had been hard to believe. And yet, here they were. Here he was. But something was off--it didn’t take much more than Gopher’s cryptic warning to get your wheels turning about the exact nature of their return to the ranks--or lack thereof.

You chance a closer look, as attentions seem well and truly diverted, now. Blades gnaw armor, the flash and clash cutting through the night as Rezador cuts, and cuts, and cuts. Supposedly, one of the greatest melee combatants in the world. Possibly the best.

But from the bray of Tanker Tigershark’s laughter, you would think anything but.

His whoops bound across the water as he drives the mantis back, oil running in rivulets down his mangled body, compressed air hissing from cracked ballasts. With a toothy grin, he steps forward, heavy footfalls crunching atop the chips of plating littering the top of his submarine, that hellish drill-hand slowing to a halt… and letting one of Rezador’s wicked sickle-like blades clatter to the floor, shorn from its owner’s body.

“See, your problem is--” Tanker booms, “you’re not sparring with someone made of glass any more.”

Rezador is eyeing his foe warily--wounded, but nowhere near as fearsomely durable as the maverick. Still, he refuses to back down, ready to spring.

You upload your feed. “He’s in trouble. This could be a good chance--should I engage?”

“Which one?” Cojocaru replies dryly. “Hold for now, but be ready.”

You have a guess as to what they’re playing at, but you keep it to yourself. “Copy.”

A moment later, though, the possibility of intercession falls off the table. A second vessel surfaces--and a figure, already on the prow, takes a few heavy steps forward.

“New contact,” you whisper, scoping in on it. “Recognize that silhouette?”

“Running it now… Stand by and keep recording.”

Tanker cranes his head over one shoulder to look back at the newcomer, and Rezador pounces--only to meet a crunching backhand that clears him off Tanker’s sub and deposits him in a heap at the end of the docks.

“You were ordered to fall back,” the newcomer calls.

Tanker scoffs, a bloodsoaked monument. “I don’t do retreats.”

“You do when this navy directs you,” he warns.

Your handler pings your ear. “Yeah, we’ve got him.”

“Affiliated hostile?” you ask.

“Guess.”

“Joy. Am I done here?”

“Not yet.”

You look up at the little drama unfolding--and are greeted by the sight of Broadside Yamatoad unshadowing his guns, massive cannons brought to bear… on Tanker. On the docks, Rezador hauls himself up, a battered wreck, sizing up the situation. You don’t miss that Tanker is doing precisely the same.

“We’re leaving. You are either leaving with us, or I will kill you here myself,” Yamatoad informs his… ally? Curtly.

Tanker turns and squares up, hunched low, making a low, rumbling noise… sizing his opposite up against his own heavy damage. and his face once more splits into a razor-maw grin. “You’ve got more guts than I thought.”

Yamatoad doesn’t respond, letting his sighted cannons do the talking over either shoulder. Silence deafens.

Tanker breaks into another laugh, the tension dispelled for absolutely nobody but him, voice surprisingly jovial. “I’ll kill you for this, you know.”

“You are welcome to try.”

Chuckling, Tanker turns to regard Rezador one last time. “You get off the hook this time,” he calls--and you don’t miss Rezador’s already-stormy features darken a few hues.

Their little drama concluded, the maverick vessels move out--and bloody, battered Rezador watches them leave, a seething, silent roil to match the deepening dark of the sea.

You tap your comms. “Get all of that?”

“We got it. Prime television viewing,” Cojocaru says.

“We sharing this with our friends in Geneva?” you ask.

“Not our call. Keep on Rey, make sure he doesn’t cause any trouble. If he does…”

You chuckle to yourself--you’ve about tripled your kill count just taking advantage of the chaos in his wake. Not bad, considering he might wind up your biggest catch of the night. “Understood. Umbrâs out.”

You give him a small lead before you follow him back inland, back towards the urban centers, when:

“How you doing, Işik?”

You swoop low, over another volley of buster fire. “Gopher, where are you?”

“Almost there. Draw them around the corner.”

You don’t need telling twice, juking and weaving through the plasma ringing the air around you. “Tell me you have a plan.”

He chuckles. “I’m the plan. Just get over here. Fly low.”

In your brief time knowing the Maverick Hunter commander, you’ve come to observe something of a knack for understating things. So when you round the corner, you’ve dived for the floor and fly just a scant inch over the streets. There’s no more room to evade, once your speed advantage evens out--you’ve got nowhere to go but back up, with fire bracketing you every which-way.

Fortunately, in that brief time knowing the Maverick Hunter commander, you’ve also come to trust that he knows exactly what he’s asking you to do. The moment after you round the corner is simultaneously the most vindicating and terrifying moment of your life.

With the crack of about two dozen thunderbolts, the sky simply opens. The chaos of flickering firelight and intermittent streetlamps vanishes under the light of day, as Firestorm Gopher opens up with guns on every inch of his person, lancing out tracers in all directions from his person as your pursuers enjoy a Han Solo moment.

And it really is only a moment. The temporary daylight recedes, the night encroaching again as scrap metal and burning, twisted wrecks crash to the streets all around you in a rain of steel. You slow your manic retreat, gently coming to a halt a few meters from your partner.

“I take it that’s why they call you Firestorm?” You ask.

“Something like that,” he replies. “Any new developments?”

“Aside from the air contacts? No. You?”

He nods. “We figured out what they’re up to. Did you see the carrier?”

“It was strafing the Al Magest position on Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridge.”

“Mm. Target of opportunity--convenience, more like. They’re moving on our own air.”

You take a moment to appreciate the professionalism--however he might feel about the politics of your city, he’s keeping it to himself. You could practically feel the ‘pity, that’ coming. “We got their harriers, but there’s a large vanguard moving ahead of the carrier to keep us from getting close enough to knock it down.”

“Evac whoever you have left on that fight,” he replies. “Except Kurt, loop him in with me. Take care of your people. And don’t be airborne in five minutes.”

He sets off purposefully in the direction you came, and you resume following a ways behind--the two of you have been meeting decent success with his heavy ground firepower matched to your aerial lure and flanking.

But even with his guns not firing, you can’t help but pick up the increase in ambient temperature as he walks along the road, running parallel to the river. Four small canisters have sprung loose from Gopher’s back as he runs, falling into a loose orbit and circling him. You increase your follow distance as you comm in orders to your people--along with quick, discrete check-ins, to make sure they’re all okay.

The air begins to chop with turbulence, forcing you to drop back even farther--ahead, the ground swirls with debris in a loose ring around Gopher, as he draws closer to the front line.

“Kurt’s sent his forces off. He says he can hold on his own, but not long,” you report. “Linking comms now.”

“Kurt? Gopher. Wall yourself off. Damage anything you have to.”

“Stop being delicate, got it,” the Lieutenant Colonel acknowledges grimly--you can hear the fatigue in his voice.

A small pylon rises from Gopher’s back as those bits around him begin to pick up speed--and the air starts to shimmer with heat waves. The vanguard is in range now, a salvo of buster fire splashing across Gopher’s front as he sprints through it, undaunted and shields aflare.

He doesn’t slow down when they draw melee weapons, doesn’t slow down when they charge him--but they do. The heat suddenly swells dramatically in a pulse of lambic glow. Tires on abandoned cars begin to melt and each footfall cracks window panes and shudders signboards. This close to the historical district, the roads are still asphalt--though no longer, as Gopher’s tread leaves running tar behind him. The mavericks, quite simply, wither and die as he barrels through them, melting and burning, and strat matter captured by a now-audible whistle of suction from the orbiting satellites around the Commander. Matter--road, car, maverick, whatever--accretes into a red-white slurry of molten light, and still the gale increases.

By now, the midday sun seems to light Istanbul once again, as you finally abandon the air and drop to the floor, the turbulence overwhelming for your lighter frame. Ahead, past the blinding glare, you see the carrier looming over the channel, lumbering around to put guns on the sprinting fireball below.

Then Gopher fires.

In all the chaos, you hadn’t noticed the swirl, almost twenty meters in all directions, but you know it for its absence in an instant. All the roiling flame shrieks in the vacuum, drawn in to a single point atop the pylon. Ahead, Kurt’s flames gutter and feed the inferno, slender tendrils like fingers that join the whole, collapsing to a singularity for one instant as Gopher raises both his busters and aims.

A shooting star lances across the sky, a flaming javelin brought down to a sewing needle’s thread. It glimmers for a moment, and is gone.

In the next instant, the air ignites, and the carrier--run through and left with a pinprick hole amidships--suddenly buckles and a giant, end-to-end cylinder is cored straight out of the heart of the machine. The water roils and boils soundlessly against what sounds like sizzling from every direction.

The light fades, and the airship buckles, listing to one side as the two halves, connected by a thread, bend under their superheated keels and simply fall apart. It almost lazily plummets to earth in a gentle arc, even before the secondary explosions begin to chain through the superstructure and the sea reaches up to consume the maverick dreadnought.

A dazed, slightly singed Ates Kurt blinks back at you, bewildered. Gopher’s headlong charge slows to a trot, and he finally lets go, pylon and orbiters retreating back from whence they came. Ignoring his stunned expression, Gopher puts two fingers to his ear and comms.

“India, you’re clear.”

A single jet--you hadn’t heard or seen it, for the light show--streaks overhead, through the space the carrier once held. “Don’t have to tell me twice, luv. Cheers.”

It’s then that you notice…

Unsurprisingly, no second post tonight. Now that we're swinging again, though, I'll run 'til it's done. New threads need making, I'll make them. I do still have a life, unfortunately--two things on my books tomorrow, on top of a general constant cookie-production factory thing. Lots of care packages going out this year.

The Commander is firing.

You give a whoop--for yourself, mostly--as there are not any friends to share it with. Dijamant Lav could not join you--the streets bogged down in the fighting, by the time he arrived. Perhaps it is better this way.

“You are sure I cannot use the cannon,” you ask him. He knows from long experience you are not really asking.

“Another day, Major,” he says.

“Alas,” you reply sadly. You will have to one-up him some other time. Still, there is plenty to be done with what you have available.

Plasma splashes across your shoulder as the next wave crests the hill, only to bow their heads (or lose them) as you sweep your right arm across the field, barrels spinning.

“Yes!” You call. “Yes! Come and fight!”

They do not, of course--not after the first, the second, the fourth time they dared you. Turning away, you adjust your aim down upon the river once again, even as the tail of the slain carrier disappears into history. Around it, still, tracers crisscross and lap at your shinplates, now pocked and scarred from shouldering their burdens.

The gunships could not be allowed to control the channel, you were informed. Nor their air force the sky. The infantry could not gain this point. All of this could not be allowed.

The Commander chose you for this place for a reason.

Firing down at them from atop the bend in the Bosphorus, you cannot help but pity them. So many sent to the bottom with their fellows, never seeing what they were firing at as they vanished below--where Marine awaits. Even as their target designators finally marked you, they realize, one by one, ship by ship, and too late: They have you right where you want them.

This, this is the fight you were built for. A rare solid-projectile round buries itself in your shoulder, shields ignoring it as it dents your pauldron. You turn and raise your gun to the sky once more, setting it alight with another stream of counter-fire. You hear a shout, and lift your other arm again, ready to meet the next barrage with yours. Fire cuts across your chest, plasma and shield flicker dance over your eyes.

Your armor holds. Your shields hold. Ideal.

“Ursa, can you hear me?” Dijamant comms. “The pig is back!”

His plasma bolt thuds into your back just a moment after. “Yes. I have been expecting him.”
>>
>>2158795
The swine--swine in all ways--is no artist with his weapon, clearly lacking skill. Your shields ignore the second and third salvos, so poorly they are timed. He boosts back and forth directly overhead, electrical bombs raining as he uses his jetpack to evade your arc. Though undisciplined, his fire is strong--you feel flakes of armor crumble from you under the assault.

Unfortunately, he lacks experience, and has no idea when he is simply being led along.

Your Vulcan Rail, long obsoleted by fearsome upgrades to your main weaponry, simply reaches up and takes him in an instant. The look of shock on this Powerpack Peccary’s face is memorable as tungsten hail punches through weapon, body, and pack in a firing lane he never knew you had.

A moment later, he explodes in midair, no clean LIFE cell consumption, but his magazines--a great many of them--detonating from within. For the third time in just a few minutes, the world brightens again as the maverick leaves it.

You can’t resist, comming Commander Gopher once more as the light fades and the metal rain begins anew. “Perhaps not as dramatic, but I make do, yes?”

Gopher chuckles, as you turn your guns back on the next air wave, swooping low. “Da, Major.”

You snap-roll back upright as God’s car door slams shut behind you.

The C330 Swallowtail is quick and responsive--it damned well better be, it’s an escort fighter--as you yaw back to center, having narrowly evaded the latest in a series of glowing blue rifts into artificial space. The good news is your fame precedes you. The bad news is that the mavericks knew you’d be coming. And they set a trap, for you and only you.

Normally you’d be thrilled, but this one is out there, even for them--no less than seven enemy carriers have spread out across the skies of Istanbul, each dropping floating pylons here, there, everywhere.

Once enough of them are deployed, they triangulate, match signals, and mass-trap everything between them in Cyberspace. Of course, with no infrastructure to contain them and a limited power source, they promptly then terminate the domain and shunt everything back into realspace at the nearest programmed exit coordinates--

The ground. And the cheeky little shits are aiming to drop you right onto the fleeing civilians.

Gopher already bailed your ass out of the opening move, leaving you a threadbare window to escape through by blasting a hole in the nearest carrier. With rage born of indignance--and that buried, godawful knowing that you lived only by grace and the act of another--you retasked on the remaining carriers, now turning on anything civilian they could find.

You’re not alone up here, though, unfortunately--each of the survivors had an escort of its own, and close coordination with the ground forces tells you that your least favorite person is probably running this operation. Seven’s thorough, you’ll give him that.

The radio crackles as Flares comms from below the shimmering panes of Cosmic Bluescreen chasing you over the skyline. “That one was close. You okay up there?”

“Just fine, m’dear,” you reply calmly, even as your integrated senses claw out through the Swallowtail’s in all directions, looking for the next trap. “Just wanted to give ‘em hope. You?”

“It’s not getting any clearer down here, I’ll tell you that much,” she replies. “You were right--this is a full on staging ground.”

“Mind those guns, luv,” you warn.

“Hm?” A third voice--your new Bulgarian friend and Firefly’s erstwhile partner--chimes in.

“Er--not you, Mŭlniya.”

“Mm,” he grunts by way of acknowledgement. Good chat.

“He’s tied up with Al Magest,” Flares explains. “He’s keeping them busy at the chokepoint, rather than us.” For obvious reasons. “They had charges with them--they’re going to try to blow the bridge.”

“So what’s the plan, l--Flares?”

“Simple. If we get rid of this Outline guy, there’s not much reason for them to blow up the bridge, is there?”

“Would also kick a leg out from under their supply for the night’s festivities,” you note. “Need a hand?”

The grin in her voice is unmistakable. “Pretty sure I’ve got this one, India. Happy hunting.”

You flip the cap off the firing stud, nosing down on a slow, fat carrier that still has no idea you managed to claw your way above it. “Cheers.”

You are Captain Anode, and here comes the next son of a bitch.

You’ve gotten pretty damned good at hunting CF-0s by now--you’ve certainly had the practice, all night long. It’s been hours, but finally the near-constant irregular thuds of titan’s footfalls has quieted. The CF-1s have disgorged their contents and, you’re told, retreated, but you’d rather leave a ground threat for the military to contain and keep the buildings upright.

This particular one has managed to give you the slip twice--for pressing local concerns, you’ve had to let it pass, or had only a brief window to snipe its head. You’ve done so, but neither shot was the last one. By now, though, rappelling back down to ground, you’ve finally got the trap set.

You learned a thing or two--they’re simply too massive to slow down with your coils, but you can use that against them--when you break a high-tension line at max load, the snapback is a thing and a half.

As it walks facefirst into the line, it doesn’t even slow it down--but the telltale crumple-twang of shearing braid preludes the rather vicious backlash, yanking off the building you moored it from and whipping around and around the CF-0’s giant, stupid head. The ends slap against it with enough force to tear through a car and shred at its face with strangling, jangling bladed fray. Its shields pulse one, two, and it’s done.

“Anode to Gopher,” you comm. “That’s the last of them. No further officers since Eviction.”

“Roger that, tasking you Southwest,” comes his immediate response. “Take on any objectives along the way and report in for big trouble. I’m tasking anyone who can move fast enough to catch up with you.”

You cut the line, and change tuning. “You get all that, Delphi?”

“I did,” she replies--your eye in the sky (on the ground), she’s been a godsend for setting up these ambushes and minimizing the harm the mavericks can do--the last three CF-0s you brought down were in already-evacuated areas. “I’ve got Reploid civilians under fire in the old section of the city, and the evacuations to the South are getting logjammed. Conflicting reports about Al Magest screening the lines, nothing concrete yet.

Another note on the tabletop rules: I tweaked the main doc to cover things to my satisfaction:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bym_M6G0i95Eem5wdV8ybkp0Qkk

... And added a second, smaller doc, this one about rules for human Hunters (and a bit of in-universe MHQ history compiled from old sources).

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1XYN_Kmrqu9SaAhsmaY49JdWX1HKs0Tz0

Those links will remain identical no matter how many times the rules are updated, but I'm pretty sure I'm Done Enough(tm). Now I can move on with my life.

Until I get it in my head to start a rules doc about vehicles and deployable units, anyway.

>With mavericks in the streets, those evacuations need to get cleared before they’re flanked.

If Al Magest IS there... then any reploid civilians trying to evacuate are in trouble, too. Which might even be why the lines are getting bogged down.

Good place for a hunter with high durability, resistance to EMPs and electrical stuff, and a very low-shrapnel loadout.
>>
>>2163936
I'm honestly not sure what to go with.

On the one hand, we've got a situation already going hot with the reploids under fire.

On the other hand, the situation with the evacuation has the POTENTIAL to be a lot worse if the Mavs do take advantage.

I'm going to say...

>Have Delphi path you a route via back streets to the old city. Reploids are people too.

I think it's the situation we're more suited to take care of.
>>
>>2164087
Alright, I'mma share some of the things I had for Human Aces.

You went in a pretty similar direction with skills, squishiness, and unpredictability as I did, but I didn't have internal slots. Instead I had gear slots. A butt load of gear slots. What I had envisioned was humans being the Solid Snakes/Doomguys of the game of a sorts. A disposable tool for every purpose/carried gun for every job. Gear slots could be surrendered for more HP in the form of armor plating (because they lacked Structural Strength) if they chose. I planned on having them play with a focused on set up in fights. Ambushers and relying on surprise generally, using their buttloads of carryable mines, tools and so forth to be able to prep, change, and manipulate the direction of fights.

I did, however, include augmentations and implants, as they were mentioned in MHQ, so I figured I'd roll with it. Adrenal, for example, was an implant that prevented humans from going onto a pain induced shock and extended their HP pool into the negatives for a limited time. There was an array of prosthetic limbs and a few organs (including a subset of fragile ones that were in fact, armed). But all this stuff was in the expensive and dangerous category. Implants required surgeries, which applied a wound recovery period where a human character's stats were slightly reduced (mobility, A&C, TI skills all preformed as if they were down a skill point). And finally, humans had red haze. Wounds progressively dropped their stats at certain thresholds (80%/60%/40%/20% -1/-2/-4/-6). Each of these thresholds counted as a wound, with surgery applying 1 wound without reducing health.
>>
>>2164558
Going heavy on Gear slots can definitely be a thing as-is -- just get some hardpoints and stick gear racks on them. Starting with only a ton of Gear slots and using/exchanging them as you like is something I hadn't considered and does sound viable by itself. With that and the implants and bloodrage, though, it starts to feel... not bad, but just a different game architecture.

I started with the idea of the average Maverick Hunter being a reploid. The lore is there, and main doc bent toward it before I ever changed a word (and ballooned the thing to 22,000). I thought that, rather than humans having an entirely different system for their loadout, there could be a way to make a human Hunter play similar to a reploid while still carrying a definitely human flavor. That way there would be as little muddling with different sets of rules as possible.

The "Harness" armor system did that for me.

* PRO: Semi-symmetry, potential for genuinely equal footing with Mavericks below S, fewer brand new rules.
* CON: Nothing about specifically augmenting the meat under the metal (aside from Attributes and certain Skills). Not a ton of Gear slots available right at the beginning.
* BUT: More Harness armor can be bought and tinkered with and swapped between missions. Solid Snake loadout for one mission, Hulkbuster for another, if you survive long enough to pile up the zenny and upgrade.

>>2163936
>With mavericks in the streets, those evacuations need to get cleared before they’re flanked
>>
>>2164669
Don't get me wrong, I quite like how you've done the Harness system. I'm just tossing out how I was doing it rather than tossing out any criticism.

I was largely looking to make it reflect that fact that humans stand a lot more to lose when push comes to shove than reploids and nudge them towards safer, more set up strategies since structural failure rolls are likely to be a bit more... worrisome for someone with fleshy parts. More grizzled/experienced humans having been put through the meat grinder now and again, and increasingly play a bit more like reploids as they pick up prosthetics and become more machine than man until their body can't keep with all the stuff tacked on was part of the idea.

On an unrelated note, one of the other things I had that I had forgotten about earlier was that humans actually gained an unpredictability point for every point of damage taken.

Right, right, no wrongs gotten. And I do like Unpredictability-for-damage.

"Increasingly mechanical parts via on-the-job damage" reminds me of nothing so much as the mutant-hunting agents from Logan. It seemed like every single one had a prosthetic somewhere, and justifiably so. Maverick Hunters could surely be like that too. I just like to think that experienced human Hunters wouldn't look -quite- so much like the guys from Logan, just by medical advances making mechanical prosthetics less necessary.

I mean, I know it's difficult to try and apply hard science to the Mega Man series -- hi HC -- but late 20th century technology could grow human ears in a lab. Surely by the 22nd, with matter replicators and cold fusion in play, growing a new limb or organ from donor stem cells would be available on the Maverick Hunter health plan.

And one more thing.

Having humans fight in armor that can be switched out would also explain India. After her substantial endoconstruction work, she said that her new armor was probably better than Anode's. That fact saved her from only getting her legs blown off by Seven's... y'know I'm just going to call it the Chekhov Buster.

Having human armor be Better overall to compensate for human squishiness made sense. Add it onto a reploid with a lot of endo work done and they'd be much, much harder to kill. As demonstrated.

To be fair, remember how missions go FUBAR at times for Anode. Every Hunter probably gets a few like that, even the human ones. I mean, just to use Lockon, imagine being a human Hunter who suddenly had to face not just a sniper, but discount Vile Disc Boy? Probably get a bit messed up.

Absolutely, which is why I suspect humans are a small minority in the Hunters. Likely not to start with, of course, but when X1 rolled around, there was a world full of reasons for humans to just leave the reploid-hunting work to reploids.

Of course, tell a population of humans that there is an extremely dangerous job in which you can save the world yet which only highly skilled humans can perform, and you'll get a line of applicants out the door...

>>2165128
Without going into socio-political specifics, there are many human beings who would shun advanced prosthetics yet accept growing and attaching a replacement meat-limb as more "natural." Heck, in this very mission there's a group of anti-reploid extremists; they might assault people with reploid-tech prosthetics just for fun.

But that's just my line of thinking.

Possible. Still, in terms of game rules, the effect would be the same -- which basically no player character could get done in the first place due to the cost being $Narrative.

If humans are a minority in the Maverick Hunters, I'm assuming that full-endo reploid Hunters would be at least as uncommon. They can't all have Hero-of-Vienna money.
>>
>>2165422
More likely that full endo armor is only common among blackcoats and other high combat ranks. Hunters who have been in a long time and take higher value targets. Helps explain a little about Tanker Tigershark, too. Not only was he built tough, he took missions constantly and his turnaround was frequently instant. Lots of upgrade cash there.
>>
>>2165486
Right. You can get some endo work done even without looking exactly like a human. It's just "internal construction," after all. I may need to clarify that... well, if and when I do, the URL will be the same.

“Can you get me to those evac points?” You ask, and the words haven’t even finished forming before the map has.

Fortunately, it’s a straight shot--but sure enough, as you grow closer, you begin to hear the shout and clash of the mob. Moving at full tilt down the cleared road out of Istanbul, you nearly check yourself face-first into a flying bolt of plasma. You only just avoid it, wrenching an arm into the ground to stabilize and snapping your buster back up at--

A human. Torn clothes and an improvised mask over his nose hide his features, and the smoke from his buster pistol hides the rest. He fires again, as you jerk to the side, even as the volume begins to rise exponentially. Someone tackles him aside, wrestling for the weapon as a shower of bottles, bricks, and stones sail overhead, crashing down around you. You pick a molotov out as it arcs overhead and leap back as it shatters and blooms into a fireball.

Among the humans, you manage to focus your vision just in time for a swell of violence, pipes and bats descending, garbage lids and construction signs raised in defense. Another man--small, sweaty, and pale--worms his way out of the press, shouting at you, the words trampled in the havoc. He looks over his shoulder, and then twists and hurls his body, crashing through a barricade as he throws himself into the path of a chunk of rock, thrown your way.

“Go,” he mouths in clamoring silence from the floor, pulling himself up unsteadily--his bell so soundly rung and the adrenaline pumping over the pain.

Almost entirely at a loss, you turn and burn. “Delphi, what the hell was that?” You demand, stunned.

Her voice radiates disgust. “Al Magest ‘checkpoint.’ Making sure refugees are Turkish--and human--enough.”

A moment goes by, when you hear the shouts turn to screams. You turn back to see a car rock side-to-side and then rend asunder as the ground seizes and turns itself over beneath it, jagged lines of rock and ice glittering in the fireswept night.

Out of the remains of the “checkpoint,” a heavy, brooding figure steps. Immediately, you recognize her, and the moment of confusion and chaos solidifies into coherent, actionable rage. The screaming abates behind her--the humans fled, or dead--as she locks eyes with you.

“You got a name,” you hear yourself ask, “or am I putting you in my memoirs as ‘that bitch?’”

She slams her fists down, shattering everything from streetlights to sidewalk, and kicking up a chaining plume of earth from below.

“Cryoseism.”

Earth attacks, Seism in the name? Get some air on her.

Swing a Tumult Shell to catch heat from her attack and hopefully explode by the time it gets to her, but don't stick around to find out. Jump or wire or jumpjet, just get vertical.

Then land on her with a Shell Driver. Show her what a real groundpound looks like.
>>
>>2166795
Stick to lance and busters for opening moves, we've got more to do after putting her in the ground. Make liberal use of Raikousen and Mass Shriver.

Remember Em's Anti-Collide strategy: find what she bothers to block, then unload into her.
>>
>>2166795
General options.

Tension Coils are our best bet for getting up and over terrain disruption and ground-based ice attacks, but we're running a bit low. We should be good for this fight, I think, since they've got great ammo conservation; but let's avoid wasting them on any fancy grappling shots. We've got a pretty bad track record using these things against husky customers, which this is if I'm reading things right.

Tumult Shells unlikely to stop the big earthquakes. Save them for if she start firing ice shards or something, but even then dodging will be better than counting on them to tank the hit, depending on the size and nature of projectiles.

Lockons will be good here, I think. If we use overcharged shots, make sure there's nothing behind her when we fire; shooting from the air at an angle will be our best bet for minimizing harm from an overpenetrating shot, and is probably a good idea if she brings up a hasty ground/ice shield from the terrain.

Shell Drivers... A good getaway option if we end up too close for comfort. But I don't think we should end up getting close, if we can help it. But...

The jumpjet and blueshift will be very useful here, I think, for quick hit-and-runs. Utilize in combination with Mass Shriver or Arrest Buster lance strikes if we can get an opening, then Shell Driver to get away. Watch capacitor charge so that we have enough for evasive maneuvers afterwards.

Unknown if Flash Freeze function of misericorde will function properly against an "ice" element reploid, and again, we don't want to get close. But a hi-beam is a hi-beam, yes?

For now, play cautiously and defensively; it's been a long night. Call it in in case we end up incapacitated or KIA. Get Delphini's analysis. Stay mobile and probe with Anode Cyclers and Lockon Hunters.
>>
>>2166901
And I misread the Lockon Hunter number. OH BOY. Still. This seems as good a place to spend them as any.
>>
>>2166897
Seconding this: seems simple and unlikely to fail dramatically.

One corollary: Save some electric charge + the Jumpjets for a Blueshift, just in case she gets grabby. My gut tells me that she wouldn't do so well wrestling a superheated blue fireball.
>>
Can we get foxfire on comms?

The mavericks just dropped cyberspace pylons everywhere, we happen to have a cyberspace hacker expert on call, and Anode just happens to be the only guy who could feasibly power one up.

She hacks in to change the exit point, Anode charges it up, and we get to do Saetos's asshole piledrive from the edge of space technique.
>>
>>2166988
The pylons are floating in the sky, and also I don't think we want to get TOO far from this fight unless we're actually retreating.

And retreat is an option, here. It's certainly not the best option right now, while we have a fighting chance to down her, but it is an option if we find we're outmatched.
>>

"...while the figure you tackled into the back wall is actually almost as large as Collide, massively armored and looking more annoyed than damaged--a sizable scorch across her chestplate aside--as she hunches forward into a brutish ready stance."

So, big, heavily armored. If we use Lockons I think they're gonna have to be two overpenetrators.
>>
>>2167013
...and not to multipost but I now notice that the jumpjet only ANNOYED her. So...

>>
>>2167013
>>2167019

...ah. She's the Collide-shaped one, then. Oh boy.

Well! I guess we'll be putting those anti-Collide strats into action a LOT sooner than we expected. Lots of Lance swinging and Mass Shriver use, I imagine. Just need to see what happens with her opening moves.
>>
>>2166795
A thing to remember is that she was one of the ugly mods in the command squad for the mavs. The one with the HUGE guns if I recall. Tumult shells will not hold up to that.
However, we have options and alternatives. We are near the bridge.. so that means we are near the water. Use our mobility to avoid attacks, move her away from civvies, and then use the Shriver/Driver combo with OPAL assist to either launch her into the River, or further away.
If I recall, Em said that the Cryo stuff in the Misreicord, if unstable, would be VERY dangerous in the water and judging by her size, her weapon's output, and her likely not being a member of ghost, it could take her out of the fight. Or at least long enough to get everyone out of the way.
In short, move like a small fighter, punish like a heavy and go for the Ring Out.
>>
>>2166795
I think the misericorde will still be one of our better bets here. A shame we're not that good at dueling with it. This and Shell Driver are the moves that they shouldn't have as much info about, so when we pull them out we should make them count. Might be too costly if we waste a shell driver "just" on relocating her somewhere safer.

Let's not forget to try to old Ascent Lance electric spray, it's one of our safest moves and I don't think we'll be using so much Raikousen that we'll need every bit of charge.

Lob a Tumult Shell at a high angle. It might be that her armor is just front-heavy and hitting from multiple angles alone will help. At the very least we'll know something if she even bothers to avoid or track it.
>>
We're next a barricade. Em dropped off that big fucking flaming sword in a fountain next to a barricade.

I think we know what needs to happen.

Anode needs to jump in that water, pull out the sword, and become the motherfucking King of England.
>>
>>2167132
See, I'm not as sure since, given her thing is ice, she likely has some abilities and shielding against ice based effects. Her armor's likely treated for cryo attacks.
>>
>>2167154
I support this plan
>>
>>2167156
even before the cryo abilities, it's still a hi-beam specifically made for anti-armor that we can pump Mass Shriver into.

>>2167154
THIS IS FINE TOO
>>
>>2167154
It can't possibly be the same barricade, can it?
>>
>>2167176
I mean, it could be, but the fountain where he dumped the sword is a ways off from where he saw the barricade.

And, of course, Anode doesn't really have any way of knowing there IS a big fuckoff sword lying in a fountain somewhere.
>>
>>2167190
yeah, it'd be weird if Em really messaged Anode about it. Besides, putting ourselves near an exposed water line while fighting an ice-seismic fighter is potentially an incredibly stupid decision.
>>
>>2166795

Alright HC, I think we've identified and voted for every single possible avenue of attack Anode can conceivably execute, as well as retreating, dunking Cryoseism in the ocean, becoming the King of England, and suicide by Foxfire.

So just write all that up as our opening move and we're good to go.

Now, I don't think we've exhausted EVERY possible avenue of attack.

Clearly we should flirt with Cryoseism, show her a night on the town, and then when drop her off at the big bad maverick HQ and she leans in for a kiss, we stab her.

The perfect plan.

Remember the basics of Emerald CQC. Use our mobility and range of the lance to our advantage, while controlling the engagement as much as we can. So dont give away all our cards at once.
And im jus going to guess, going by how she entered, were going to want anode to stay light on his feet, in case she directly fucks with our footing. Luckily we have two, maybe three good options for quickly changing direction in midair.

For weapons, I'd say mix in some T coils into melee and try to get her still enough to try and hit her with a charged Lockon. Legs and armr, so we can finish with the mass Shriver, likely anything with armor like hers isnt going to be taken out with a with anything less then heavy trauma.
>>
>>2167313
Hold up there. In this sort of situation, ending the fight, or causing significant harm to her and getting her to either withdraw or pew pew pew is better than drawing it out too long. We still need to meet up with the others and our ammount of wires and hunters are low. She has also seen what we can do since we attacked her, seven, Eviction, and Daladala Dingdong. The ONLY weapon she hadn't seen if I recall is the Shell Driver.
So we use that. We know the Solstrike Jetpack can hurt her, or at least scuff her. We know her big attack is that cryo blast. So, we mix the Solstrike, with Blueshift, Mass Shriver and the Shell Driver, along with some electro dash. OPAL for triangulation, and then mix that with the River.
Besides, she is likely the best bet to see how this combo will do in a live fire situation against a 'heavy' opponent. The only two other heavy mavericks we know of are Yamatoad and Tanker, after all.
>>
There is one more thing we need to consider, I realize.

We don't know what's IN the water. There very well could be hostiles there. Or friendlies.
>>
>>2167424
Good point, especially since Yamatoad is here
>>
Just recapping exactly where and what we've seen of this maverick so far.

"...you’re just hearing the start of them firing out at you when you pour on the boosters and rocket into the hangar bay stomach from the front on a blazing jet of blue-white flame.

You feel a crunch of impact followed by a much louder, angrier crunch of impact, slamming a maverick body into the rear wall. You spring back as a crisscross of fire--and a wave of ice--slash across where you were standing."

The ice is from Cryoseism, and indicates that she doesn't need solid ground to use that as a weapon.

"...almost as large as Collide, massively armored and looking more annoyed than damaged--a sizable scorch across her chestplate aside--as she hunches forward into a brutish ready stance."

Big, heavily armored, mostly shrugged off our blueshifted jumpjet. At the same time, we did manage to move her, so that's impressive in and of itself. Brutish, ready stance implies a preference for brawling.

" You fire another pair of shells to ward off his counterattack, but a scything line of blue from the hulking one at the back smashes through them, shattering shield, ice, and all, a howling gale of blacklight spiraling through the glittering mass. It--"

That "scything line of blue" sounds like it could be some kind of laser weapon, assuming that the "hulking one at the back" is Cryoseism. Definitely something to watch out for, considering how it obliterated our Tumult Shell.

"A moment goes by, when you hear the shouts turn to screams. You turn back to see a car rock side-to-side and then rend asunder as the ground seizes and turns itself over beneath it, jagged lines of rock and ice glittering in the fireswept night."

Not sure if she's shifting the rock with some kind of manipulable cryo-injection, or if it's in tandem with some kind of geokinetic technology.

"She slams her fists down, shattering everything from streetlights to sidewalk, and kicking up a chaining plume of earth from below."

Big fist does big damage. Probably the cause of the seismic attacks. Definitely, definitely do not want to get hit.
>>
>>2167494
The general plans presented so far.

>Play defensively at range, probe.
Pros: Minimal chance of getting our shit pushed in, stalls for further analysis of Cryoseism's moves and fighting style, and possible back-up.
Cons: Delays us from getting to Gopher, risk of additional injury to bystanders. With armor that heavy, there's no guarantee we'll do any real damage to her this way, even with charged shots. Also, that laser just looks nasty.

>Go in close with lance, misericord, and Shell Driver.
Pros: Cryoseism hasn't seen us use our misericord or Shell Driver. The hi-beam might work really nicely against her armor. Lance could be used for probing strikes if we need to go evasive.
Cons: We'd be going into a brawl with a brawler. With Em's advice, Mass Shriver and our Kinetic Coil, we might be able to succeed in a melee, but it seems chancy, especially if she can ice the terrain and is used to fighting in slippery/uneven conditions.

>Put her in the drink.
Pros: We can probably leverage our charges really well in the water. Ice and water don't tend to play well together, if what I'm remembering from past threads is correct. If her ice weapon is injection/spray based, then if it freezes the water prematurely at the output mechanism it might clog it.
Cons: We don't know if she'll actually do worse in water. We've had two previous fights in the drink, one real against a B-rank and one simulated. We'd only have the riverbed to snag to, and she might be able to manipulate that just as well as the street. Also introduces other variables, such as possible foes or friendlies. If anyone with aquatic capabilities is nearby and can fight with us, I'd say go for it, though.

My personal vote is for probing at range unless we can hook up with friendly aquatic assets, in which case we give the Crushinator the dunk tank.
>>
Considering how much collateral damage Cryoseism does just by moving around, it's probably wise to limit her mobility, and thus how much of the city she'll disintegrate. This means no launching her hundreds of feet with explosion punches or V-MAX.
I forget though, does Shell Driver knock the target away, when it's actually fired rather than punched?
>>
>>2167494
Again, could be linked or simply exacerbated by the use of the water lines running under the city. Fighting her near a fountain or hydrant could be potentially bad.

>>2167674
Shell Driver itself should knockback, but when you consider the angle of fire and Anode being a pretty large dude, the target will usually get hit downward and travel much less.
>>
>>2167388
Youre completely misunderstanding what I was putting forward here. I never implied we should draw out the fight, I was saying we should get in a position to get her one the back foot, by temporarily or ideally permanently ruin her mobility, by catching her with a wire or hobbling an arm or a leg, so we can then use or mobility advantage to go in for a kill shot, since our only good option for that would require a close range attack.

“You were talking about zoning? Isn’t that a technique for bigger guys?”

He balances the hilt of his knife on his palm, standing it on end while he walks back. “Yes and no. I mean, for one thing, you can hit like one now, with that trick. But, I mean… if you can’t engage, then force them to disengage. Remember what I told you about melee? Being in it should be your choice.”

“Well yeah, but I can’t, that’s why we’re here.”

“Right, but overall--force them to break off rather than commit. You could have avoided one or two hits on the last go-round and stayed in it.”

“How about big assholes? Or flyers?”

“Big guys usually don’t try to block everything. Find out what they bother trying to guard against, and find a way to use it. In melee, you should be able to at least maneuver around them a little, pick up your feet. Flyers, same deal, stay mobile. They usually have to land or swoop to make a run on you, don’t get caught out. Oh, and usually they have to commit to their moves, kind of like dashing, or you with the jet thing. Aerial maneuvering is tricky--the faster you’re going, the more time it takes to stop or maneuver.”
>>
The other thing is not a specific quote but that whenever we spammed our VWES at Em he focused on dodging. Then later we tried a few desperation tactics like attempting to jumpjet slam him but that failed. Bad Cain Labs. Bad.

That little demonstration gets you talking about the biggest threat to an otherwise favorable melee engagement--hitting an enemy that just does not care about the damage you’re doing. For that, Em suggests the Shriver, the Shell Driver, dropping chaff, or just jetting the hell out with Raikousen or, preferably, saving your booster as the ultimate Get Out of Jail Free card.

So this one was less of a hard vote and more trying to get an overall impression of your tactics. The most common thread was fighting defensively and conserving your bag of tricks until you’ve got a sense of her capabilities. Writing to that effect.

>>2166795
Your charge shots come ready just about then, so that’s what you open up with--firing one, then the other, and watching her curl to one side, and then make a heavy leap to the side of the other. She comes down with a fist, and you feel a hum in your teeth a moment before the ground splits and rends again, shattering from the point of contact and racing to your feet. Your turn to evade, drawing your lance on the go as you return fire with a burst of uncharged plasma. She wards it off with an arm, but her shields still flash--and you feel a sudden burst of relief. She’s tough, for sure, but she’s no Collide.

That said, you have a new problem, as your terrain doesn’t stop being any less chewed up. With another volley coming down the street, you leap to a building, fist wrapping around a windowsill for purchase. Okay, so she seems to prefer to hang back and throw shockwaves around.

Let’s probe her melee.

You engage the Saetos booster again--she knows that trick already--coming in on a column of flame straight towards her dead on. Cryoseism cocks back a fist and swings to meet you, but you twist and roll your shoulders, suddenly changing trajectory as your lance snaps alight. You exact a dashing cut to make Emerald proud, pouring on the Raikousen before you’ve broken contact--lightning surges out to your heels and arms as you electrify the slash and rocket straight by her.

A day ago, you might have thrown the Shriver in there, too, for good measure, but recent experiences have taught you to keep a few cards face-down. You’re glad for it as, with a tremendous sideways lurch, the building you’d sprung from collapses. It slides to one side and then disintegrates into an avalanche, collapsing the way you came, masonry raining down around an unflinching Cryoseism, ignoring the slash through her armor on one side.

...It’s then that you notice the screams.

>"Delphi, is there anywhere not full of civilians nearby to try and drag this fight to?"
>The faster you kill her, the less die. Press hard and fast.

Trying to actively rescue civilians feels like a trap, meat isn't built for the kind of mobility we're packing, so we're gonna be slow and distracted if we try it, and I really doubt she's just gonna have a smoke break while we pick survivors out of the rubble.
>>
>>2169500
>The faster you kill her, the less die. Press hard and fast.

It sucks, but I don't think that we can divide our attention to save those civs.

If we try to save everyone, we'll end up saving nobody... And the longer this fight drags on, the more treacherous the ground will get, and the more infrastructure damage and civilian casualties we'll have.

I think we've seen enough to get a good idea of her capabilities, even if she's got some aces up her sleeve. Put her down, and then we can worry about putting out fires.
>>
>>2169500
>Detour to grab however many humans you can and move them the hell out of the disaster area.

Our flying Jumpjet kick knocked her on her ass, earlier. Could a well timed Mass Shriver/Shell Driver punch throw her under the collapsing building? Or is the building already crumbled on the ground? I can't really tell from the description.

Trapping her under there, even if only for a few seconds, could give us enough time to have our cake and save some bystanders with it, too.

She'll smash her way out pretty quick, but if it's possible, I think it's worth a shot. Otherwise, yeah, hard and fast is the best approach.

I agree with getting Delphi to try and get emergency rescue and medics to the area while we clear out Cryo. There is more than us on the field of battle. Work with those who want to save lives by making the area safe for them to do their jobs. We were built to fight monsters, so fight monsters.
>>
>>2169500
Wait, this could actually be an opportunity to take her down fast. She's probably been briefed on Anode by Seven, so she'll expect him to go after the civvies.
What if instead, we have Delphi go ahead of us for it, but act Like we're hading straight there, and then counter her when she inevitably tries to blindside us, and THEN loop back towards the civvies. Like, just get in a good hit to slow her down at least first?

Well the thing is, she's not going to let us stop and save people - us moving towards them means she's firing stuff right at a bunch of wounded civilians. I know it sucks, but right now she's too big a threat to ignore for people we could get killed trying to save. So with that said...

This is a terror mission - unless we can strategize a quick win, the play here is to go zone by zone without overcommitting. Can yhou take this particular area that has some amount of civvies fast? If yes, gofer, if not, pick one you can. If you can't take any fast you can dig in and tank and keep aggro, as long as you make sure you don't die. Anode being a reploid, might be able to take some heavy wounds that don't kill him but do take him out of the fight, mind...

And now it's time for a festive seasonal song!

I tried to save civilians...
Some Maverick bitch ran free
Our base was burned and I lost friends
Some Maverick bitch ran free
I watched a spider suicide
Saved a mole - his buddies died
Why do I feel so dead inside?
Some Maverick bitch ran free SOOOO
MY SOUL'S BEEN SHATTERED FOR CHRISTMAS
My whole damn world has gone mad!
My smile's been stolen at Chrismas...
Cause my life's been nuttin' but sad.

I tried to follow his example...
But my dog, he never came home
Brought my buddy back from the dread cold
But our dog, he never came home
Woman saved my life while getting cut in half
The war's nonstop now, no time for laughs
I never get a mission to use my chaff
And that dog, he never came home SOOOO
MY SOUL'S BEEN SHATTERED FOR CHRISTMAS
Everything I touch is fucked!
My smile's been stolen for Christmas...
Cause my whole life I've had no luck.

No.

...No. Don’t get distracted.

You bound straight back at her, registering her eyes widening for a moment as she goes defensive. You blast through the falling building, coming in low and inside her loping, long-armed stance, your fist blinking away as you bring it up from beneath. This time, she gets the Shriver.

The Shell Driver detonates underneath her chin with a bang and a buckle, something in her face giving way to your new, explosive fist. Light courses through the conduits in your arm as you follow the motion through, your elbow wrenching with the cross-shearing forces, held in place by your supercharged musculature even as the recoil snaps Cryoseism’s head back--

And up. Her boots leave the ground as you send her on a brief vacation tour by air of Istanbul, already planning your next move before the lightning has stopped surging through you and your momentum slows. “Delphi, can we get these people anywhere else?”

“Working on it, but it’s not great,” she says grimly. Reality catches up with you as the building collapses around you, parting like the sea--it cascades into the ruined street behind you, and you realize dimly that Cryoseism’s exit vector sheltered you neatly from the falling debris.

You take off in the direction she flew after one of the longest seconds of your life--you don’t dare look back at the alley from whence she came, or the remains she left behind there.

She looks up as you come down on her again, this time with an aggressive, heavy two-handed lance swing. She winds up and swings for the fences, rising to meet your overhead slash.

All she catches is empty air as you cut the beam, falling right past her to land hard on your feet, and you turn and burn it into charge as you shoot the works--lance, Shriver, Raikousen and all.

Your slash crosses from her left hip and up across her face, sizzling a brand across her torso and face, the armor giving under your full assault. She soars again, this time straight back, burying her in the side of another building.

She looks up again just in time for you to slam into her with another Shell Driver, burying it in her face a second before it goes off. Another bolt and blast, and in an instant, Cryoseism’s body falls limp, head gone.

You turn away as it lists and slides down the wall, disgusted. “Where we at, Delph--”

You turn back as Cryoseim’s hand closes around your leg, headless body pulling itself upright. You ignite your lance to hack down at it, but you can already feel a deep pulse course down through your leg and into the ground.
>>
>>2171166
A moment later, you rise up into the air, impaled on a spire of ice and rock. Your shields flash blindingly as your own weight sinks you down onto the spike, sundering the armor and digging into your conduit channels beneath. Your capacitor indicators tick wildly and finally the display number simply goes dead.

With a roar, you twist yourself off the stalagmite, snapping the end off still buried in your back. You slash once, twice, one-handed, lashing out defensively and scoring yet more hits on her failing armor and fading shields.

You begin to feel the infrasonic landbreaking hum again, and engage your boosters.

You twist wildly to one side as one thruster sputters and fails to ignite, but the other springs ablaze, driving the two of you back into the building once more. Her grip loosens--no, her arm simply came off--and finally you spring away, the advancing sweep of shattered earth only just behind you as it tears through the street. Water mains break and cables snap as whole chunks of road and sidewalk tumble into a growing chasm.

Once more, Cryoseism rights herself, armless, headless, one leg sparking, armor cleft nearly in two.

You raise your buster and fire a Lockon Hunter straight into the center of her chest. It punches a neat, orderly little hole through the breached armor, in stark contrast to the ragged desolation behind you, winking out with a glimmer of blue light.

The maverick falls again, and does not rise. Slowly, almost reluctantly, the explosions begin to cascade from within her battered shell, and this time--for certain--Cryoseism is gone.

Grimacing, you flex and arch your spine, trying to get at the chunk of freezing stone embedded in the small of your back. What’s weird is that it doesn’t really hurt, per se--it just lingers uncomfortably, pressure where there should be none.

“Anode? You okay?” Delphi comms.

“Allegedly,” you reply. “Remind me not to forget the double tap. She’s down.”

Hurry up, hurry up, hurry up, let's fight

Hurry up, hurry up, hurry up

We're crashing along with a song in the city's heights

We're locked together until one of us is deader, you see

We'll be killing the ones we love to kill without a single stop
At the firefight where we watch the people pop, pop, pop, pop!

There's a happy feeling no one can come take away
When they pass around the orders to go fill some graves
Just picture all the innocent folks you'll never get to save
These wonderful things are the things we remember all through our days!

Wait, does this mean the capacitor is offline for now? Or did it just ground out its charge on the rock spike?

If the former, we'll need to be a lot more careful in any major engagements.

I would guess a newbie A, or a B in line for a promotion. Remaining functional without her head is a pretty good trick.

Unfortunately for her, if Seven gave her any kind of information at all about Anode being classified as "Ranged Defense", then the super-strength and relentless Melee/Lance combo was probably the absolute last thing she would have prepared for.
>>
A-Class Threat, but not specialized for combat so much as incredible destructive potential. An extended battle with her would have put so much collateral damage on the ledgers... and I mean honestly, she made quite a mess as it was.

Nevertheless, she did not come to kick ass and take names. She came to topple buildings and murder humans.

A job well done.

Okay, so: I don't think Anode makes for a refreshing face at this moment. Between having a a rather exposed bit of rent armor, Delphi being a local they recognize, and her hologram thing, I think Delphi is less likely to have them panic.
>>
>>2171505
Bet she regretted her life decisions when we knocked her head off.
>>
>Those Reploids are still under fire.

I mean, what I'd really prefer to vote for is to continue southwest to whatever Gopher was getting us ready for. We got pretty fucked up by her death throes, and I'm not confident in our ability to take on both whatever is firing at the reploids and whatever Gopher wants us for (big trouble, he said).

That said, we've done our job here by taking out the threat. If they're under collapsed buildings, then they're either

A) Dead or dying, which we have no ability to remedy
and/or
B) Trapped under rubble which while making for a great photo op, will require a significant time investment even without Al Magest throwing cans and rocks and plasma pellets at us.

It sounds like our jumpjet, our capacitor (and by extension all the tricks that rely on it), and some of our armor is out of commission. We're running low on VWES.

That said, if we can't keep moving...

>Those Reploids are still under fire.

Hope that it's just something like rabble Mavs that we can take out without a fuss, instead of something like an Al Magest death squad.

Also I hope that we're recording everything.
>>

Oh. That said, we definitely do need to mark down the general area where the screaming came from, so the people who do the legwork will be able get to them. Leave that to Delphi, I suppose.

Right now we are in poor shape and need to make sure those here are saveable. The plus side is we managed to smack her fast before she continued doing massive damage to the area. Just watch your back in case someone tries to poke our stab hole.
>>
>>2172743
To be fair, she was an A. If Anode wasn't the sturdy fucker he was, or made the choices he did, he'd be worse off, and she fucked us up a decent bit. Also she was a giant burrowing ice bitch who easily felled buildings and created mass chaos among the squishy humans. Give credit where it's due, she was a custom built monster.

That said, she was also an enemy officer, and she was where we were supposed to be heading. We are kinda Gopher's current go to for problems where he doesn't know what the fuck is going to go on down there since we're sturdy as fuck and keep dragging our busted ass back despite the beatings, and this fight's a shitshow all around for knowing what's going to be where. Could be Cryoseium was our mark, could be that it was someone else, point is we at least iced her.

You’re still close by, and you find your feet already moving before you have time to think about it. “Any emergency services still running?”

“No, but I’ve marked the location for rapid response,” Delphi replies--she pauses, but doesn’t break the line. “...How bad is it?”

Bad.

Ragged streets are a match for ragged bodies. One human, late teens, is looking up at his own arm, impaled on a shard of ice, eyes glassy and unfocused. He’s pale, and the blood staining his entire left side from the wound is obvious--as is the dim awareness that he’s probably already dead, and he just doesn’t realize it yet.

He’s not alone. Others are strewn and broken, some groaning and crying, the more fortunate--the ones pressed against either wall of the alley--are either completely uninjured, in faint disbelief, or only have bruises and lacerations from brick and glass. Others weren’t so lucky, falling into the chasm opened up in the street, twisted in painful angles. The few with enough sense to try to help are triaging--one old man whispers to a boy quickly and quietly, trying to get him to hold still as he thrashes with a broken leg.

All told, you count about two dozen bodies, living and dead, wounded or otherwise. The rest must have fled under Cryoseism’s attack… or writhe somewhere in the mounds of rubble.

You’re trying to figure out what to say as you approach when another plasma shot sizzles out, splashing across your shoulder. You snap up a buster as the assailant stumbles into view, the screaming and panic redoubled in the human survivors.

Reploid, you immediately realize, and civilian. Alone, armed only with a buster pistol in a shaking grip, held at arm’s length. His eyes, though. His eyes are wide with terror, as he stumbles forward a step, then another step.

“Help me,” he gasps, even as he steadies his weapon and fires again.

>>
>>2174045
We are a Hunter designed for combat: built to survive multiple shots to the dick, forged in the fires of Cain Labs, and armed with a weapon that erases plasma. This is a civilian with a buster pistol, possibly being used as a puppet.

Defend the humans, scan for any secret bombs or Maverick puppet masters, and then non-lethally and non-literally disarm the poor guy.
>>
>>2174045
Seems easy to take care of. Way, way too easy.

Try to keep the humans calm. Let them know that this street has been flagged for rapid response, and that the situation is being in control. Screen approach with phase distortion, disarm and crush buster pistol in hand so no panicky civvies can turn it on him, and then quickly back off and circle. Give him a look over and try to talk him through whatever's going on.

If he moves to threaten other civilians, interpose. Look for an outside controller.

>>2174045
>“Help me,” he gasps, even as he steadies his weapon and fires again.

So, he's Maverick infected and trying to fight it, or... something mind-control-ish is going on. Like Limited, maybe?

Seems like we all have the same general idea. Approach slowly with the Lance, catch his shots with it so he can't hurt anyone, then disarm him. The buster pistol, that is, not his arms.
>>
>>2174110
That's probably even worse than the "cut his arms off" plan. If anything we could probably just pick the pistol out of his hand, civilian busters aren't nearly as powerful as military ones.

>>2174189
This guy's just a civilian, there's nothing else to it.
Think of the situation from his point of view. He's got Mavericks trying to kill him from one side and Al Magest guys also trying to kill him from the other. Where does he go? Where is he safe?

It occurs to me just how hostile approaching with the lance out can look, so... definitely talk to him while approaching.

"Hey, no need for that. No one here's going to shoot anyone. You can be scared and angry, and hate what's happening, but no one here needs to get shot. Okay?"

I... don't really know what to say, so that's my best shot. We've seen the Maverick virus amplifies feelings of anger and hate and stuff, so that seems like the best tack to take...
>>
>>2174204

Use that OPAL to scan for any bombs and such on him. Try to reassure the civvie that you're sure he isn't a maverick, so just try to keep calm.

Be ready to pull out the lance. Civvie buster is one thing, but we might get shot with something bigger from a different angle.
>>
>>2174056
Not too well. Far worse than a combat one. Also, very bad PR.
>>
>>2174045
We have OPAL, and none lethal means to disarm a civilian such as hand to hand. Remove the gun, and if possible, find out whats causing his issue. It would not surprise me if there is a remote control device developed by the Mavericks for more terror.

Erratic behavior suggests outside control. Be extra wary of something like a pararoid. Use your observation skills as you move in to disarm; we can afford to be slow, I think, as long as we warn off the humans.

For tying him up, yes. For a quick snag of the pistol out of his hands? A much safer option than trying to peg it with hot plasma. Could also yank him to the ground hard, if we wanted to get rough, but I feel like that should be a last resort.

After a tense moment, you slowly lower your buster--though your hand rests over your lance. “Delphi? Are you seeing this?”

“I’m not picking anything up,” she says.

“Me neither,” you observe--OPAL returns are clean as a whistle. Your lance snaps alight as another shot sails at you, fizzling on the edge.

“Calm down,” you tell him. “My name’s Anode. I’m a maverick hunter. Fourth Overland. What’s your name?”

“Please,” he moans again. “I can’t move. I can’t move…”

He takes another step forward, stumbling blindly over a chunk of overturned road from Cryoseism, and that’s when you see it, clinging to his back.

Something matte-black and insectoid, rotor-like wings folded down over its back like a cicada. A long, segmented tail hooks down and roots in the base of the Reploid’s spine, while two pincers at its head close around the hapless Reploid’s neck. He rights himself ungainly, pistol coming up again. “It… hurts…”

You glance back at the civilian, as two more shots meet your lance blade and peter out. It’s then you realize something--

He’s firing at you. Not the humans.

“Delphi,” you comm, already knowing the answer. “Insect-looking mechaniloid, wings and a tail, bodyjacking Reploids. Black armor.”

“Sounds like a pararoid,” she says. “But we know how to scan for those, and I’ve never heard of one in black. They’re green or red.”

“I don’t think the mavericks built this one,” you reply grimly.

Whatever Delphi’s saying, you don’t have time to register, as that tail probe releases from the Reploid’s back--he staggers and slumps--and then cries out in pain as it drives a wicked-looking spike back in.

He takes off at a dead sprint, straight at you, dropping his pistol as he moves. Evading him is childishly easy, but you hesitate--you don’t know what pulling that thing off of him will do. “How do I kill it?”

“Get the tail,” she says immediately. “And watch out.”

Get the tail, watch out. Right.

He lunges again, and this time you twist around his side closely. The hapless Reploid stumbles, and the needle withdraws, snaking back to jab him again.

In an eyeblink, your Raikousen engages--your capacitor percentages fluctuating wildly from --% to NaN% to a whole string of garbage data, before finally blinking 19. The poor bastard flinches, trapped in his own body and waiting for your swordstroke to fall.

Instead, you reach out and snare the pararoid by the tail, and with a roar, rip it off the body with your Shriver. It resists for a moment and then wrenches off crudely, thrashing once in your hand as you throw the stinger away, slapping against a distant building and falling limp.

Instantly, so too does its victim--but the pararoid itself is still alive, hooked to his back. He begins to flail and spasm, crying and pleading for you to get it off as he tries and fails to right himself.
>>
>>2176327
You carefully take him by the shoulder and lift. “Stay still,” you direct him with as calm a voice you can manage, and he whimpers a nod. You press your buster into the mechaniloid on his back and fire a single shot.

He twitches, but it explodes, the mandibles around his neck falling limp as its body shatters, leaving him none the worse for wear--aside from multiple puncture wounds and a scorch on the small of his back. He trembles, trying to get his legs to hold him, now that they’re his own again.

“Are you okay?” You ask. He nods numbly, unresponsive. You look up at the crowd--all of them staring, a few holding weapons that they now look down on in doubt.

Tell them plainly and calmly that he was being controlled by a mechaniloid and is no longer a threat. Inform them that although emergency services are out, the area has been flagged for rapid response, and that we must be moving to contain another threat. Acknowledge the difficult situation that everyone is in, and and ask if they are willing to take care of this man. If not, have Delphi figure out some place we can put him on the way to our retask.

Appeal to what is best in them, but do not patronize, preach, force, or cajole.

Thinking further, it would be nice if we could so something quick to help out everyone, something concrete and quick that they can't do, while whoever Gopher is sending with catches up with us... But.

We have no first aid or medical training, to my knowledge, and no time to administer it. It's rough, but we're built for putting down threats, not saving people's lives.

It would be a bad idea to move anyone out of the chasm, injured or no, unless there's some kind of immediate threat to their safety that makes the risk of further injuries or recovery complications worth it. I don't even know what we'd do if there was a gas leak; somehow I doubt our sparking metal would play nice with flammable vapors.

We could maybe try to move some of the larger bits of rubble with Shriver, but we don't really know which bits to move, and if they'll crumble in our hands.

We could always ask them if they can think of anything but I don't know that they trust us all that much more, removal of Maverick scum not-withstanding.

It's just a bad scene, man.

Delphi is the one who MIGHT be able to do something, but we dont know if she downloaded the damaged architecture simulation for dummies.
>>
>>2177935
Trying to think if OPAL could help. The ability to see infrared, or the like could help find victims in the rubble. There was also that trick we used in the attack on Lockon's missile silo. Sending a bit of electricity up and down the pipes to get a feeling of the area. Human bodies would have a faint electrical signal if I recall, so that might be a option.

You look back at the crowd, now silent (aside from the injured), and kick over one of those insectile blade-wings with your foot. You watch them follow the motion, stunned to a man. “Rapid response is on its way. I need to move. And he,” you tilt your head to the Reploid you’re holding upright, “needs help. Can I leave him here?”

Your tone isn’t accusatory, but your intent carries over well enough. They hesitate for a moment, and then finally, one man--crouching by the bloodied head of the protester who took a rock for you--stands up and approaches. One of his friends follows, and they carefully brace around either side of the civvie you’re cradling and take him off your hands.

“Stay put. Help is on the way.” You turn and return the way you came, feeling their stares through the chunk of frigid stone in your back. You shrug it off, and comm Delphi again. “We need to get word about those pararoids out.”

“Already on it,” she replies. “And Commander Gopher is looking for you. Patching him through now.”

“Captain,” he says immediately, before you can even check in. “Whatever you’re doing drop it, I need you to get to City Hall, to your South.”

“On it. What’s the situation down there?”

“You’ve got Mavericks and Al Magest on the streets fighting to get in, civilians trying to get out, and most of the city leadership still stuck inside after election night. Get in and secure the building.”

“Delphi, what about--”

“More Greek troops have just arrived,” she replies. “Vlastisi Vidra is here with a full contingent. She’s cut off the naval assault and staged a landing with elements of your 6th Marine. They’re pushing through the maverick ground forces, early reports say we’re driving them out of Istanbul.”

“About damned time,” you note.

“They’re pushing from the opposite side of the city,” she warns. “Mavericks are still operating uncontested in your area.”

“That’s what we’re here for,” Gopher replies. “Emerald is back in contact, he’s nearly there. Get moving, now.”

It’s a pell-mell race through the streets, fighting now all around you--human, Reploid, the residential district times a thousand. You round a corner to see another Reploid civilian, curled up in the fetal position as blows rain down on her--

From other Reploids. Shouting and screaming, they club her with lengths of broken pipe, thin plating cracking and buckling under the beating. One is “supervising,” holding what looks like a captured buster rifle, out of place on his light build. You’re about to shout, when a familiar voice beats you to the punch.

Is it too early to sing Auld Lang Syne? Anyone have any more appropriate requests for the season?

>>2178547
“HEY,” Emerald booms with surprising ferocity for his size. The trio round on him, then recoil in fear at a military model interposing himself. Given his posture--hunched forward, predatory, and very, very angry--you can’t say you blame them.

He rips the saber hilt from his shoulder and snaps it to length at his side in one sharp motion. His expression is cold, but his eyes are red hot as he remains motionless, blade ignited and radiating naked aggression. “You were just leaving.”

They don’t need telling twice. Their victim hauls herself up, looks up--does a double-take--and sprints right past you, disappearing into the night.

“Hey,” Em says, sheathing his weapon and walking closer, turning to smash that discarded buster rifle under his heel--and under an intermittent spotlight, you don’t miss that the back half of his body, head to boots, is now a stark grey.

“You get a haircut or something?” You ask.

“Turns out if you get water hot enough, it debonds paint,” he replies bluntly. “You okay?”

“I’m alive,” you offer. “Let’s go.”

He nods, falling in with you as you break into a run. “We’re here,” Em comms. “Anyone else?”

“On the way,” Gopher replies. “I’m sending Flares, but she lost a wing.”

“Just us, got it,” you reply. “We’re coming up on the building now.”

Istanbul city hall is every bit as august as you would expect the seat of government for an ancient city to be--towering high in the air, even as the plaza before it is ringed with violence. Someone throws a molotov, and gunfire reports from all sides.

You’re guessing Seven’s ground forces did some ‘agitation,’ based on the military-grade weaponry on display here--but right now, upjumped and scared civilians aren’t your biggest worry. Em springs past on your right, hopping a barricade and dive-rolling into a shattered first-floor window. You throw on the dash and ramp right over it, coming down roughly and just making it in after him as fire begins to splash across the damaged frame.

“Power is out,” Em calls. “Comms are getting choppy.”

“Hardened floors,” Gopher replies, static in the line. “Get up to the top floor and clear any mavericks you see. Double-time!”

You dash ahead as hostiles come into sight--a rogue Lanceteamer and a Hoganmer. Em slides across the front reception desk counter, the ball and chain sailing clear over his head as he bears down on the maverick. You step into a draw-slash and fizzle the incoming plasma fire from his partner out of the air. He starts to fall back, and you launch a chasing salvo back at him as you run ahead and interpose between him and Em, sending a Tumult Shell after him to ward off his fire.
>>
>>2178552
The two of you quickly put down your targets and stay on the move, Em running up a bannister and mantling from a column to the balcony above while you snag it with a coil and zipline up ahead of him, warding off an opening battery of fire for him to barrel through. He gets the door for you, slamming his boot into it and pinning the maverick on the other side to the wall before nonchalantly impaling him through the glass, while you dash past and hose down his squadmates with plasma.

You leapfrog that way, up and up and up the building, occupying forces thrown into disarray by the two-man thunderstorm tearing through them. Comms sputter and die somewhere in the climb, leaving you without further intel, without Gopher’s orders, and without Delphi’s now-familiar, one-step-ahead-of-you preparedness.

“Hang on.”

Em holds up a hand, slowing to peer around a corner on the top floor. “No movement. Anything?”

“Nothing,” you confirm. “What’s up?”

“Signs of fighting, but no noise. Anyone who made it up here didn’t make it back down.”

“How much further?”

“We’re here. Be ready.”

You nod, as he advances cautiously, approaching a single wooden door, a far cry from the sleek, modern offices you just tore through. Slowly, he pushes the door open from the side, and you sweep in, buster up and lance ready.

An entire line of Reploids rest on their knees--where they were killed, left to simply sit there like empty mannequins. You recognize the remains of mavericks littering the room, a weapon, a hand, a head.

Across from you, rising from a table and raising a wicked-looking, compact weapon, a human you saw displayed on TV only a few hours ago.

Altan Kangawa, leader of Al Magest, snarls and fires on you as you and Em leap to either side.

“Hey, cool it!” You shout. “Maverick Hunters!”

“You are not wanted here,” he declares, sweeping his fire your way--you duck and hunker, raising your lance.

“Stand down!” Em calls. Kangawa slams a button on the desk, and shutters begin to close--slamming shut behind you, and on the tall windows stretching across the far wall.

“We did not ask you here--”

“You DID, idiot, your--”

Em ducks aside as the fire sweeps his way, nimbly avoiding a salvo, but not coming closer, expression conflicted. This isn’t good. The last thing you or the hunters need right now is a political shitstorm on your hands--and this guy seems pretty dead-set on shooting until you’re gone.

“Drop your fucking weapon,” you snap, rolling aside as his fire sweeps across the room, thudding into the walls and destroying pictures and lights.

“You are here to overthrow our rightful rule! I will not be intimidated!”

“We’re here--” You dodge again, slashing one of the bolts aside as he nearly catches you in the back. “We’re here to help, you stupid bastard!”
>>
>>2178558
“You can help by joining the rest of the sahipsiz,” Kangawa returns coldly, dropping his weapon and lifting another.

“That’s a DMT gun,” Em warns. “Does godawful things to metal. Don’t try to parry one.”

Lucky break--you nearly did, instead juking to the side as something that looks like a paintball impacts on the wall in a puff of greyish mist. “I know you are here to take my life, tin devils. I will fight, and everyone will know. Everyone.”

You hesitate, casting a quick glance around the room, and--there, sure enough. Cameras. Jesus fuck, this guy. “I don’t have anything safe to use on a human,” you warn Em over comms. “I need your help on this.”

“Dude, I can’t.”

“Em, come on, we can’t do this all night!”

“I can’t!

God fucking--

You realize that one of the window shutters is sparking in its frame, grinding in place at the top of the sill. You have an out.

In the same moment, though, you see a faint flutter of movement along the floor. Kangawa doesn’t see it, turning his gun on Emerald, frozen in place, blind to the gliding shadow.

And then it sweeps up behind him in a fluid move you only barely register.

A weapon ignites. The crackle and thrum of energy. Three perfect slits punched through Kangawa’s neck. A spray of spittle and blood, hissing and evaporating into a red cloud through the new holes in his throat. The clatter of his weapon hitting the ground, followed a moment later by his body. Eyes rolling back in his head, saliva foaming at the corners of his mouth, he topples to one side, swiping feebly at the air.

Altan’s body falls aside as Schwarzhund’s claws retract, and reality breaks down. You see everything and can’t make sense of it, for a second. Pockmarked wooden paneling. The reflection of the lights on the shells of dead Reploids, lined up and executed. Schwarzhund’s coat, fluttering to a standstill. And Emerald’s face, eyes wide, and, frozen in time, recognition, disbelief, betrayal in them. And brokenness. Utter brokenness.

… And then, with a scream of rage that returns you to reality, he lunges forward, beam saber snapping alight as he charges down The Black Dog of the Fourth Overland.

Tag team with Em. No time to hesitate. He's going hard, and we may as well too, if only to bring a fitting end to the already dead. I don’t think he’s going to survive fighting Schwartz, either. He’s better than him him with a saber, yes, but Schwartz is hardly gonna be limiting himself to saber combat.

Literally the only good possibility here is that Schwartz was a traitor all along and doesn’t actively want to kill Em, in which case he might let him (or both of us) get away.

I mean, if it were Em in his right mind, I’d say go for it, but I don’t really see him as being top of his game right now.

Blow the shutter. Shriver-Driver the whole wall if we have to. Just punch a hole, expand options for entry and exit. Flares is on her way, too.

Then... shit. Grab the metal-eater gun? Seems like a useful plot device, better than Schwarz getting it.

I just don't think we're getting a handle on Em without losing a limb. The best play is to let the man work, give him space to move that isn't in that room. He's better at melee than us and we have to trust that.

Which isn't to say we leave Schwarz completely alone. Find a space that isn't full of angry green and dump the works. Em will see it coming and he knows how to dodge.

well, fuck.

If by some miracle Kanagawa isn't dead, get him out of here. Grab his DMT gun, prepare a trap.

But since he's definitely dead, let's deal with Schwarz. According to the dog himself:
>"I'm good up close. Medium range, tops. My best tricks work when I can get around someone."

We're trapped in an enclosed space with him, made better and worse by the fact we're with a now broken Em. Since it seems unlikely that we can coordinate properly with Em, focus on helping our green ball of rage get his hits in. Use buster fire and Tension Coils to limit Schwarz's room to maneuver, force him to engage our melee specialist.

Now my first conclusion is that Schwarz went deep undercover, faking going Maverick to complete objectives that the Hunters wouldn't openly sanction i.e. killing Kangawa. But recalling what we learned from him, that doesn't preclude him from actually trying to kill us, so I think we should run and regroup.

Is that one door sparking in the "metal grinding against metal" way, or is there a broken electrical cable/wire in it?

>>2178638
No, Schwarz will expect that. He's always been built more for agility than armor wait fuck, too, so the gun probably won't provide much of an advantage compared to our regular weapons even if we do manage to pick it up. What if the projectiles move at 5 MPH?
>>
>>2178706
This.
Either force him into melee with Em or use Em as a distraction to nail him with Lockon or a Shriver Driver.
Remember, Schwarz is a generalist like us, not a specialist in his own words.
>>
>>2178565
I guess I'll second this. >>2178695
There's a reason we brought low-collateral weapons. That reason wasn't "Let's shoot Schwarz without hitting Em!", but it's a pretty good runner-up reason, in my opinion.

That said, if we do have to go melee for some reason, stick to big sweeps with the lance, and use the Jumpjets and Shriver to give them even more punch. Don't engage for long. Leave the slugging match to the wiry pugilist and the gymnastic ballerina.
>>
>>2178724
Speaking of all the live cameras, we should loudly voice our despair about how Schwarz has gone Maverick, his personality twisted by madness. Don't try to reason with him, it makes us look like we sympathize with Mavericks and if he actually is undercover, he can do his job better if people think the Hunters have severed all ties with him.
>>
>>2178782
>>2178728
You honestly think our Schwarz would assassinate humans without being maverick?
Kangawa being dead doesn't really do us any favors, even if we weren't at the scene of the crime.
>>
>>2178565
I really don't think we can take him... And I don't think he's going to pussyfoot around with us. We don't have the ability to call this in to Gopher, or to anyone. We're both, as far as I can tell, beat to shit. And Schwarz is a combatant whose skill, unpredictability, and lethality are without question, and whose abilities WE, at least, don't fully know. And we have no objective here, beyond the retirement of a maverick, who outclasses us.

Work the window and try to take him at range while Em covers melee. Text to Emerald. We have to get the fuck out of here. I'd just coil him and drag him the fuck out, but I don't know how badly that would hurt him, and I don't think he'd ever forgive us.

We've been brave this night, but this seems like a great time to be a coward.
>>
>>2178565
I dont know if schwarc was ordered to do shit the hunters werent legally allowed to do, but we need that DMT gun. More to prevent him from using it on us than the other way around.

Focus on deflecting the dogs attacks. Buster shots, saber strikes, let Em handle the offense while we cover him. Dont use tumult, that has a chance of being used against Em.
>>
For the record, I don't think Schwarz is some kind of radical sweet double agent.

At least, not if all those cameras were on.
>>
>>2178724

Anode has a text-only commlink, which doesn't require him to move his mouth or say anything out loud. If the problem is things getting caught on camera, we don't have to worry about that.
>>
>>2178919
Let's not either way. It'd make things worse, not better and the time to arrive here would be too long anyways.
>>2178695
I can agree, though we can also play defensive and stop him from trying to get around Em. Cut off his paths, punish when possible, and support Em when we can. If we can, try and get Coms as well.
>>
>>2178695
I don't know what my vote looked like but on thinking it over again I'm going to have to second this. If we comm or text to Em, it will only distract him. By his own words, Em can take Schwarz at close quarters but is beaten at range... So, we won't let him get to range. Maybe we can stall long enough that Flares will get here.

But I still think that as soon as shit starts going south, we've got to bug out. The instant it looks like Em is trapped in that "ten moves away" death path, interrupt, however we can.

We never did get to thank him for saving our life.

Also, keep Schwarz from picking range, keep him in Emeralds melee, don't let him break off, but don't overengage and get caught in Scwartzes attack ranges either.

The last time we saw him was just after Wolfspider. The last thing he did for us was pull rank to get an extra life during the Saetos mission. He went away on some secret mission after that and hasn't been seen since. A lot can happen in ... what, two, three weeks, maybe? If he's viral, the Mavericks might only have needed a day.

Originally I was arranging a timeline to try and suss out what I thought was a Keyser Soze moment, but was probably more like a MatPat-tier "theory". So instead, here's the Black Dog's greatest hits. Sort of.

Thread 22: Sparring with Schwarz. Remember that this is sparring, not serious fighting... But remember it anyway.
Thread 29: Strategy meeting. Schwarz present. Of note: Garm goes missing, Bast's subtank sabotaged, blowing off her arm. Initially thought Schwarz did these things. Last time we see him until now, I think.
Thread 31: Schwarz puts in the call that literally saves our life. If he is Mav at this point, then he's particularly partial to us. Doubting my initial crack theory hypothesis that Schwarz has been Mav since we met at this point.
Thread 35: Schwarz is out of base, and goes MIA from this point on. Most likely either abducted or turned here.
Thread 36: Max says an "old flame of his is back in town". "There's a lot you don't know about Schwarz."
Thread 38: I guess this became canon after all. Kind of. Might be able to gain insight on tactics here, though I wouldn't gamble on it.
Current Thread: Aw, shit, son. Did he always have those claws, or are those a new addition? Emerald would know, probably.
Next Thread: Schwarz proclaims that he is not just Maverick, but also Seven, Tanker, Dr. Wily, Sigma, Hitler, Stalin, Genghis Khan, Dracula, and the Secret Double King of Mars, and that he also fucked our mothers, drank all our Pepsi, calls us bitches, schools our asses on national TV, and begins telling the world our most embarrassing secrets.

Thus endeth the corkboard.
>>
>>2178919
Plus, we couldn’t call Tanker anyway, comms are down.
>>
Schwarz shutting down his old Weisshund comm line improved the hunter HQ invasion arc, which seems like an indication he wasn't mav at that point.
>>
>>2179260
We actually last saw Schwartz just AFTER he put the call in, just before we went on the Santos mission. He said he ‘had a bad feeling about this mission’ if I recall, which makes me wonder whether he was referring to his own mission instead.

As an aside, he also once told us to never let our guard down, so...

I can't find such a dialogue. I did skip over Thread 26 though, where he says he'll look into the possibility of a leak, though.
>>
>>2179386
This is odd, he definitely said it somewhere, but I’ve searched through that particular thread and can’t find it. Must have been with another enemy. On a Schwarz binge through the archives now.
>>
>>2179260
You're missing the mission with X, where he does use the claws in a fight. I think Schwarz also mentioned to us sometime back when we were dealing with the intel leak that Anode shouldn't rule him out as a suspect.
>>
All things considered, including the cryptic messages, I think this is just the result of us failing to save Schwarz.
>>
>>2179559
THE BLACK DOG IS LOST TO YOU, AND HIS STORY HAS RUN ITS COURSE.
IN ALL THINGS, HE LAID THE SEED OF HIS OWN DEMISE.
PITY HIM NOT, FOR HE KNEW LONG BEFORE YOU LIVED WHERE HIS PATH LED.
>>
>>2179564
Yep.

I don't know if we did the "background mission" associated with that. I know that we did Dodo (Runner's), which was just checking with the old guy. At least I think we did. We still haven't followed up on Conda's (Serpent), and we don't quite know how to interpret Frog's (Sledge).

Considering Schwarz (Ghost) was the first one we picked, I doubt we could have influenced his turn... But I think after this, we should investigate before we hare off to the next hunt.
>>
>>2179571
I guess Schwarz’s mission would be the ‘old flame’? Really need to follow up on Conda’s before there’s a clusterfuck resulting from that as well.
>>
>>2179564
"Yeah, he's gone. You may have missed some of his story, but his end was inevitable. Don't stew over it, just move on."

I might be thinking a bit too meta, but that's what it sounds like to me. Doesn't sound like saving Schwarz was ever an option, just uncovering more of his backstory to put things in perspective.

Then again, this might BE his unlocked background mission, or the lead-in to it. Who knows?
>>
>>2179603
If it's not, let's take care of it before the rest of our roster (still voting Moloch on that one).
>>
>>2179658
Also voting Moloch because something fishy is going on with him and some AP rounds would be nice against Yamatoad, probably
>>
I feel like whatever is going on here, it's not directly tied with Doppler's forces. Because there is no way in fuck Seven wouldn't smug at us over having Schwarz on his team.

The main scary question is did Schwarz go viral or did he start pulling the threads on a plot that's deep enough he's willing to kill humans over it.
>>
>>2179603

You have a point. Maybe his background mission is for us to put him out of his misery. It would make sense.

Of course, now I'm wondering "What if he *was* always maverick, just not viral? What if he's an ideological maverick, like Gravity Beetle?

>>2179260
>>2179265
>>2179571

It's also entirely possible that, while he was always destined for this, our decisions may have affected whether or not Schwarz was maverick or not retroactively, and *when* he turned.

>Combat analysis mode:

Okay, first a paranoia check. The worst possible thing that I can think of: Schwarz might have backup too. That shutter prevents our backup from getting here and helping, but it also prevents Schwarz from leaving, which means Emerald has an advantage in getting in close, unless I'm reading the situation wrong. Also, the sparking indicates an electrical source we might be able to use.

I might be reading the situation wrong. If the shutter prevents exit or entry, then Schwarz had to be in the room before it closed, right? Was he camping in here, waiting for us? Or was he shadowing us this whole time? Is he just immune to walls? Fuck. Neither one of those possibilities is reassuring.

Maybe we shouldn't go for The Gun first. Instead, we could use it as bait. If going for it is the smart move, then we know he'll do it. And he probably knows we'll do it too. We might be able to use that.

Of course, we still have to make sure we get the gun before he does anyway. It's not worth being tricky if this doesn't work. But he might not know about our Shriver Driver, and think we're a worse combatant up close than we actually are, especially without our lance.

If Schwarz *does* somehow get to range, we can play the range game too. That means lending Emerald our lance is an option that could help him close in again.

I'm not actually voting yet (and I might not) but I thought I could throw my ideas at the wall and see what sticks.
>>
>>2179737
Lending the lance to Em would be a giant "Hey Schwarz, go for me first!", but considering shriver and our much more wieldy misericorde, we could possibly give it a shot.

Instantly, with cold certainty, a thought bolts through your mind--you can’t win.

You CAN’T win.

At the top of your game, maybe--and that is a hell of a tall maybe--but you’re severely damaged, and Em is…

Even Schwarz seems taken aback for a brief instant as Em barrels into him, crashing down hard with the flambard. He lashes the blade back and forth, Schwarz twisting away from each swing expertly, and you see his eyes harden, the surprise only lasting for a fleeting moment.

You knew Em was tilted hard, but this… he lashes out, again and again, almost blind with rage, swinging and swinging with not a bit of the expertise he embodies. That one, abiding thought overrides all others, surging ahead of all of your other, laughable concerns.

Jesus, he’s going to die.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7klErpcpgc

For lack of anything else to do, the attack already committed, you dash in after him, raising your buster as you try to think of what gun you want to kill yourself with, opening fire on Schwarz. Flares is coming--you might be able to stall. That gun is on the ground--you could go for it. You could buy breathing room for Em--if he were in his right mind. You could use the window uncovered by the stuck shutter (Schwarz must have disabled it on his way in, you realize)--if Em were in his right mind. Jesus, Em…

Time seems to slideshow again, as you feel more than think that the scant moment of hesitation before you followed him in might be all it takes. Schwarz is retreating to the windows under the rain of blows, but you’ve come to recognize the poise and control in his movements. He steps back, turning to the side as Em thrusts, and then abruptly slams his elbow into the side of Em’s head, his helmet cracking under the force of the blow, body clearing the ground as his neck jerks to one side. His shields actually flare under the strike, a single flash in the darkened room that divides the time before from what comes after.

Then Schwarz lunges. Your Lockon Hunter sails over his shoulder harmlessly as you feel his own shot punch into your gut--when did he even fire, you didn’t see--and you stumble as he slams a knee into Em’s side, one hand on his collar, the other grabbing one of the sabers from off his back.

Glass shatters, and you stagger back up and dash after.

Emerald’s own saber plunges through his shoulder in a rain of broken glass, student and mentor sailing to the ground below.

You’re leaping after them, in freefall, as Schwarz jerks aside in midair, wresting the knife out of Em’s thrashing hand and reversing its course. It buries itself in his chest between the flashes of his shield as they impact, Em’s legs spasming as a third captured blade punches through his arm, pinning him to the ground.

He thrashes his legs as his shields ebb--only to be staked down by a fourth and fifth. In the moment it takes you to land, Schwarz turns and aims at where you’ll be--then waits a bare fraction of a second more for your evasive juke, the blast catching you square in the back as you try to engage your boosters.

Something shatters and blooms, then a sudden, painful burst of heat, and you crash and roll across the ground, the damaged jump-jet exploding into a fireball on your back. Your vision swims, but you slow to a halt as Schwarz rounds out the motion perfectly, plunging his own claws down through Emerald’s last free hand.

You try to right yourself, to level your buster, anything--but your arms are heavy and unresponsive. A hundred feet away, Emerald thrashes and snarls, as Schwarz’s knee comes down on his chest.

“Em,” he finally says. “Stop.”

Instantly, his maddened seizures cease. Everything goes deathly silent and still, the sounds of Istanbul tearing itself apart a distant, hazy muddle.

You manage to wrestle your uncooperative legs beneath, you, coiled to spring--

And Schwarz turns and snap-fires, shooting you right in the face.

Your ever-failing audio port futzes out again, as you feel the sensation of motion, even blinded by the plasma and your shields. Your face feels burned--they definitely didn’t catch all of that. The world is silent as, for a moment that could be an hour, for all you know, you lay there, dazed and paralyzed, watching smoke curl up and join the night sky, lit by the fires below.

Finally--finally--your neck works again, your sensors send anything but pain, as you pull yourself up, and your hearing returns in one ear.

“--Diamond’s gone,” you hear Emerald say miserably. “I have nothing…” Oh, thank God, he’s not dead.

You right yourself enough to see, and you bolt back, startled to see Schwarz’s eyes fixed on yours, sharp with killing intent as his buster is raised.

...Say something.

SAY SOMETHING!

You stare into his eyes in furious, cold silence. He doesn’t so much as breathe, not even the gentle rise and fall of his chestplate, buster not wavering. The emitter lens seems to glow in absentia, masked and unmasked by a swirl of night, a total inverse of yours.

Something about that brings it all back, pulls you out of yourself, and you feel the anger evaporate to smoke to join the rest climbing overhead. It’s the last string propping you up; you exhale, body sagging, the breath escaping you as you realize that if this is the end--and it might be the end--there’s simply nothing you can do to stop it. To stop him.

But still, some part of you realizes, now that it’s over--if he wanted you dead already, you would be. Schwarz is not one for a long goodbye, and whatever else may have changed about him, he’s being true to form.

You let your buster droop and fall to the floor, arm suddenly heavier than hell, and you chuckle bitterly, eyes still on his. “‘Simple outclass,’ huh?”

He’s silent for a long, long second. “Looks like.”

“They named the bar after Dodo,” you tell him. You’re not sure what you were expecting--you’ve resigned yourself to death by blacklight--but he doesn’t move, his expression never wavers.

“Tanker?”

“Yeah.”

He makes a low, quiet noise in the back of his throat, but says nothing.

Then--“I should kill you both,” he finally states. You don’t even flinch--not that there’s anything to flinch from.

Silence.

A moment later, Schwarz lifts his weapon, the charge dissipating unseen into the night. “If we cross paths again, I will.” Somehow, even as he spares you--possible only because of how spectacularly hard you fucked up engaging him--you know that it’s that, and only that failure that kept the two of you alive.

He stands, knee leaving Em’s chest as he disengages his electric claws from his knuckles--the blades staying in place, keeping him staked to the floor by arm, leg, and torso.

And just like that, like he didn’t just murder a human being and nearly send you after him, he turns to leave, coat hanging over his shoulders.

Something about that--maybe just having your future back again--rekindles your anger. You take a step forward, his posture almost imperceptibly shifting back to readiness.

“You failed,” you call after him. “You failed yourself. You failed us.”

He doesn’t even turn to look at you before vanishing into the dusk, slipping away so finely that you’re not sure when it begins or where it ends.

“I know.”

I mean, if you're assuming we do this now instead of after we get fixed up, he's the one pinned to the ground like a pretty green butterfly, not us.

That said, I did mean after we get fixed, and in that case, if he wants to get into a fistfight, we get into a fistfight. If you're afraid he's gonna flash sabers on us, then that's pretty goddamn telling of things in and of itself. This shitshower isn't localized exclusively on him, and if he doesn't put himself back into shape and figure out that the world continues to turn despite his personal woes, he's not going to be alive to enjoy the luxury of hating us for being hard with him.

Maybe. We probably should talk with Sapphire beforehand. Discretely, if possible; if Em found out we were worrying his sister, he might find it patronizing (if not hypocritical considering the treatment we gave him when he worried ours), which would only make things into even more of a shitshow.

It's bitter medicine, but it he's gotta fuckin' take it.

...On a side note from all this, we gotta take care of our side missions before we go roster clearing again. I want to take Em and the Bravely Broken with us to check out Baccarat's last known co-ords, just in case. Which complicates things even further. I dunno, we can run it with him, see how he handles himself, and make a judgement there, maybe.

We should bring Spider along too, he's good at card games

I feel like three officer-level operatives would be more manpower than we can justify to Gopher for a hunch (even if it's a really good one). But Spider or maybe India might be okay substitutes for Em. They both have good sensors, I wanna see how Spider handles in MHQ combat.

Assuming he's not a FILTHY TRAITORRRRRR

Anything is possible, given that the Fourth was the worst-devastated division at the start of the conflict, barring the 10th being fully wiped out.

I think we need the help of X himself. Nobody understands what Em is going through more than he does.

Whats the deal with baccarat again?

Maverick-built Hunter, left a message on Conda’s comms, 8couding his last known coordinates. He thinks he’ll inevitably go Maverick so has run off to do something stupid before he snaps or dies..

Sigma ... Saetos ... Seven ... Schwarz ... if only there were some way to tell if a reploid was gonna go bad.

That's what is so sinister about the Sigma Virus: YOU CAN'T.

Spider

Sapphire!
Susan!
Sanode!

The reason Susan doesnt want to talk about his name is because it would reveal that he is a maverick.

DEEPEST LORE

Well, Steel Berets begins with an S, so they’re all Maverick now anyway.

Spider seems like a good choice: he's a mercenary, so he might have more leeway to go on an expedition.

I'd want to take Templar, but that's mostly 'cause I want us to hang out with him more. I'm curious to see him in action: since he doesn't seem to get to go on many missions, there's no telling what his skill level is.
