Your name is Haskell, son of Sven. A young Norse man of about seventeen, and heir to a family that has long since begun spiralling, and a farm that has been fallow for too long. A father who lost most of his hand raiding, a mother who took ill on a sickness brought back on the longships, and a brother who’s entire raiding party hasn’t been heard from in six months, presumed lost to the sea.

That’s turning around. A local priest explained the recurring dream you’d been having: prophetic in nature, a way for Odin to let you know you’d been chosen as a Paladin, a champion of his religion along with your three oldest friends. Unfortunately, neither him nor anyone else of his pantheon can contact you until you find the mythical Atlas of the Conqueror. It was last held by Charlemagne, as is rumored to be somewhere on mainland Europe. That doesn’t matter so much, though. They say you don’t find the Atlas; it finds you when it thinks you’re ready for the vast responsibility it places on your shoulders.

You make a quick return trip to fetch a small sample of the spice from your barrel, and leave the docks for Olaf’s small trading post.

You’re enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells of home after your brief absence as you walk through both the village and the forest that borders it. Your time here is going to get more and more sparing, you think, so you’re being sure to soak it all in while you have the chance.

You pop out of the forest not far from the large-ish log house and larger storage building that Olaf uses for his business. Knut’s sister Astrid is off to the side, working in a vegetable garden, and you announce yourself as to not scare the jumpy girl. Blern, Knut’s dog, is watching you intently from her side, his tail wagging wildly behind him.

“Your father around,” you ask of the girl as she takes a break from tending to her plants. “I was hoping to get the best deals before everyone else shows up.”

“He’s at his desk in the storage house,” she says smiling, wiping sweat from her brow, then frowning when it’s replaced by a thin film of wet dirt. “You just missed Knut,” she continues, “he was headed to Geira’s. Dad wanted her to look at his hand. Anyway, he shouldn’t be too busy in there, so just head on in,” she finishes.

You thank the young girl, and leave with a wave as you head off to find Olaf. Just as Astrid said he would be, he’s seated at a huge oak desk, quills and sheets of paper scattered haphazardly around. It’s how Olaf prefers to work.

You cough lightly to announce yourself, and the spindly man nearly jumps out of his skin as he turns to find you standing in the doorway, between stacks of various furs.

“Haskell, my boy,” he says, panting. “You’re likely to give me a heart attack if you keep that up. What can I help you with,” he asks, interrupting your attempt to apologize.

“Pretty sure I got quite the haul in the baltic,” you answer, stretching out your arm to hand him the small sack of the yellow powder. “Was wondering if you’d be interested in acquiring it.”

“Perhaps,” he says, taking your sample with a lanky arm. “Turmeric,” he says mostly to himself after a whiff and a small taste. “Not as rare as some other spices, but still worth more than simple salt. How much did you end up with,” he questions, raising an eyebrow.

“A full barrel,” you answer. “Probably about three hundred pounds.”

“That’s quite a bit,” he says, leaning back in his chair as he lets out a lungful of air. “What were you hoping to trade it for?”

Good to have you Handler
>>
“I was hoping it could supply the farm for a while,” you answer. “And maybe something to help my thrall learn more Norse.”

Olaf turns back to his pages for a few moments, picking some out of the chaotic pile. “I can do two fields worth of wheat come planting season, and I’ll arrange for Goti to repair or replace any tools that require it. Is that acceptable?”

“We want a cow,” you say, trying to get a better deal from Olaf’s offer.

“A calf,” he counter offers.

“Deal.” Just like that, the exchange ends. You shake on it, and he spends a few minutes writing up a contract. You sign it before leaving, and are out in Olaf and Knut’s front yard around mid-afternoon, wondering what to do with your time now. Astrid and Blern are still in the garden, you have a shield boss to have repaired, a few wounds that should be looked at, and some money you could stand spending.

We can trade for an awful lot and should be able to nail a discount due to the sheer bulk. Which our farm sort of desperately needs...

Include buying some animals and feed too if possible. Get them breeding early on will save us more money later on.

Thank you very much Handler. Also, is this really 6? or is it 7?

Also, I would like to talk about how Knut was before we got here. Did he say anything in front of her that he wouldn't say in front of us?

You wave a silent goodbye to Astrid as you leave the property, which she returns vigorously before returning to her garden. Blern follows you into the forest for a few dozen yards, but you scratch him behind the ears and point him back home, and he trots back happily.

After a few minutes of walking, you’re back in the village, and rounding the corner to Geira’s home. Knocking on the open door as you enter, the matronly healer motions you to an empty chair as she finishes up working on Knut’s hand. He’s biting down on a leather strap as she sets, stitches, and disinfects his hand, so he’s a bit too preoccupied to notice you.

You wait patiently as Knut is healed, and after about twenty minutes, he’s standing from the table, headed for the door. He stops for a moment, and turns to you, his eyes hazy with pain, and the herbs meant to dull it.

“I’m getting a drink. Feel free to join me when you’re done.”

With that, he’s out the door, and Geira’s tut-tutting you up onto the surface previously occupied by your friend, and she quickly takes your shirt off after you tell her the wounds you’re worried about.

“Bites, arrows, and swords. You need to stay out of trouble, Haskell,” she says, mostly to herself as she gets the supplies she needs to treat you. “You’re lucky you didn’t wait a day or two,” she lectures, to you this time. “This puncture is already infected, and this slash isn’t far away. You’d have been in trouble day after tomorrow.”

She cleans out the wounds, making you grunt in pain from both the scrubbing and whatever poultice she uses to kill the infection. She gives you a small sack of leaves to chew on over the next few days, and shoos you out of her house as Gunnar walks up to the door, his arm in a rough sling. Geira makes no comment, and simply ushers him inside. She knows she’ll be busy for a few days after a raiding party gets back.

We'll show up fashionably late to the party
>>
It’s not a terribly long walk to Goti’s, and you’re in his shop in a matter of minutes. You enter the front room, and it’s empty but for the banging of a hammer somewhere in the back. You shout over the counter, but it seems to be of no use. It’s simply too loud back in the forges.

After a few minutes of patient waiting, one of Goti’s apprentices happens out into the front room, and rushes back to the forges after noticing you.

The blacksmith comes out, thick leather gloves on his hands, and addresses you.

“Haskell, what can I do for you? Need a new axe?”

“Actually,” you reply, pulling out the shield boss, “I was hoping you could fix this up for me,” you request of him as you place the spiked center on his counter.

“Sure could,” he answers, picking up the boss and turning it in his hands. “Probably run you… ten coins, I’d say.”

“I also wanted to talk to you about a deal I made with Olaf,” you continue as you mull ove the price. “He was going to pay for our farm tools being fixed or replaced in exchange for some loot.”

“I’d be willing to do it,” he says, stroking his beard. “But that’s probably something for me, Olaf, and your old man to discuss, right?”

You nod, happy with simply letting him know what you and Olaf had agreed upon.

My money is on her having a crush on us. Assuming that is we are the only one she gives such a hard time. Otherwise she is just a bitch.
>>
>>964554
Hey, if she is into us, good to know. If she isn't, we need to set her straight.
>>
>>964603
Humiliating her and bringing her down a few pegs ought to straighten her out if that's the case

With or without the big bad "R" word of course considering how allergic some people are to the entire concept of it
>>
>fetish shit

"no"
>>
>>964702
...Didn't we just get back from a Raid? How would that straighten her out? If she starts questioning her place smack her around a bit and lead her to the water and tell her she's free to swim home whenever she likes...if the sharks, eels, whales, or other nastiness doesn't befall her before she makes her home shore.
>>
>>965872
We are talking about Svala, not our thrall if that is your confusion.
>>
>>965922
Ah, yeah. Svala, why is Haskell mooning over the mega dyke now? Astrid would be a better choice. We don't need a shieldmaiden to follow us on raids, we need someone who can look after the hearth and home while we are gone and see that father doesn't come down with some sickness.

Also, why don't we pay a visit to the witches again? Give them a small bag of spice and ask their advice. Always look to have spirit talkers on your side, especially if gaining their favor means that they would be reluctant to curse us if someone paid for it, or at least tell us about it if they went through with it.
>>
>>965513
>fetish shit

Yeah yeah
>>
>>966127
Where the fuck is getting the idea that Haskell is mooning over her?

I am talking about the girl who looks like she wants to stab us. I don't want to get stabbed.

I'd hardly call the range of violent measures some anons want to take as "mooning"
>>
Gotta do some guinea pig things, then I'm gonna be writing

Looks like we're undecided about going to the Mead Hall or finding Svala, though, so please vote on that.
