Welcome to Animal Tribes Evo! As the name implies, you will play one of three animal tribes, guiding along the way as they become civilizations with rich cultures, technologies and advantages.

RULES
>Each turn is a new week.
>Each tribe will be limited to three (3) players.
>Each tribe has ONE turn per turn, so the players on the tribe must agree on their actions.
>Each turn will consist of TWO ACTIONS and ONE DEVELOPMENT.
>ACTIONS items are things like building, scouting, hunting and crafting.
>DEVELOPMENT items are things like technology, culture, religion and science.
>Plotting on Discord is encouraged.
>Please check the provided materials to ensure the item you're suggesting has not already been done, or whether your tribe has the necessary resources to accomplish the task.

All actions must be justified by IC knowledge - any meta turns will result in potential consequences for the tribe that attempts them. Turns must also be feasible given the level of development achieved by the tribe - attempts to bypass tech, tool or underlying developments will result in achieving that step instead.

There will be no secret turns until WAR is declared in PVP conflict. Declaring war requires an action as part of a turn. There will be no faction splintering or civil war. If you are having OOC issues, work them out OOC.

From time to time I (the OP) will prompt tribes for a BONUS ACTION. This BONUS ACTION will vary depending on circumstances, will apply to ALL tribes, and will not count against their regular 2 actions that turn. Bonus actions MUST be answered that turn or they are lost.

Bonus Action: Dual leadership. Eldest Sheep known as the Golden Fleece leads the tribe in non violent actions. The Black sheep is the tribes most experienced warrior & leads the tribe in violent affairs (hunting, war etc). Both council each other and bounce ideas off. The ultimate decision is always taken by the one who has jurisdiction over whatever the issue is on (e.g. Black sheep will get the final say over defenses even though the golden fleece gives extensive council on the topic.)

SHEEP!
Sheep don't find anything noteworthy in the easterly direction. Or maybe they get turned around in the woods. It's hard to tell, because the scouts are eager to return to the herd. They do however gather small rocks, more of their grass, and what wool they can forcibly tear off of their bodies. Weaving wool and grass together creates something like a rough fabric, though a better way to harvest their wool would make it easier to work. Sbaarticus and Baaristotle are appointed as the dual councilors of the tribe, the Black Sheep and Golden Fleece respectively. Morale holds steady, but the Sheep would like something besides boring grass to eat.

DOGS!
Dogs craft spears out of sharpened sticks, though they don't have any way to attach something sharp for a head yet. Still, it helps them in their hunt, and they manage to bring back some small rabbits that they found hopping around in the hills. The crude huts they make out of sticks provide some shelter against the elements, making them feel more comfortable - but the sticks are drafty and could use improvement. Scouting north, they find plenty more rabbits, and some ground birds like quail picking through the underbrush for future hunting. They gain a pop boost! +1.

RATS!
Rats are clever, using their fire to dry out the river mud and shaping it into bricks. These bricks are a lot more sturdy than sticks or grasses - take that Sheep and Dogs! But they tend to get crumbly, and if it rains anytime soon... that could be a problem. Rats scout around the riverside and find small silvery fish in the waters, toads hopping along the bank, and rabbits that come to drink from the fresh water. If only they had something to catch them with besides their bare hands... Still, they haul in a nice catch for the day, and gain a pop boost. +1. They appoint the noblest rat to the title of Highest Rat, proving that they can't be the cleverest at everything, and the Highest Rat declares he will lead them all to a brilliant future.

Develop: Tools, Sheep bash the collected rocks together to make jagged edges and points, then secure the different shapes to sticks using their fabrics. These should make cutting things such as wool, grass and maybe even trees much easier

Action: Go back to the forest and use our new sharp stone axes & knives to cut down and collect wood

Action: Build some nice wooden cabins out of wooden logs. They carve holes in the ends of logs using their new tools allowing them to slot together, into squares, dying the corners with their fabrics rolled into tubes (like rope). They stack these on top of each other and add more wood on top as a roof, covered it in more fabrics for waterproofing. These cabins have 1 hole for entering and leaving, which is made of smaller branches tied with rope and slots into the hole, adding a fabric curtain to the back to help keep out the draft and to make the insides extra dark to improve sleep. Maybe even add a fabric carpet for that nice personal touch. Comfy.

SHEEP!
Sheep craft tools out of the rocks they've collected, sharpening them by smashing them together. It turns out those little rocks were flint! Awesome. It's hella sharp, and makes shearing themselves easy with their primitive tools. They also make it easy to saw through branches, although they're not quite ready to chop down whole trees yet. They collect a nice little stockpile of branches, and start stacking them in such a way to create comfy cozy cabins. Well done, Sheep! The morale of the tribe improves thanks to the guidance of the wise Baaristotle. They gain a pop boost! +1.

RATS!
Seeing all the potential food that they can't quite get their creepily-human-like hands on, they decide to invent traps that will crush whatever trips them. They begin to gather rabbits and toads this way, increasing their diet and pop growth by +1. Searching for food, Rats manage to find some mushrooms growing on damp fallen logs along the riverbank. They're brown and nutty in flavor, with zero hallucinations! Scouting downriver, Rats have even better luck, finding a tree full of nesting robins. They manage to catch some of the birds and bring the eggs back to their camp to decide what to do with.

DOGS!
Working together, Dogs develop hunting tactics to better surround and capture prey, keeping one another from getting in the way. This leads to more food, and a pop boost! +1. Their spears are also improved when they find flint that they can sharpen into spearheads, lodged into the tips of the spears. They fall off sometimes, but they do the trick for now. They also decide to start marking their territory, giving the Dog tribe a sense of ownership and security - this is THEIR territory dang it, and they want the world to know it!

DOGS!
Dogs develop a crude method of weaving rope, using some of the longer grass from around their settlement and drying it then twining it together. It can be a bit brittle, but it helps hold their spearheads on their spears a lot better. They go out to hunt, and this time they happen upon a herd of antelope grazing in one of the valleys. Using their superior tactics, they manage to haul several of their prey back to camp. Tonight, they feast! +1 pop growth. Dogs also hunt ...for stones. Looking for something special, one young pup happens upon a cluster of geodes, one of which has cracked open from rolling down the mountain. It catches his eye and he brings them back to camp!

SHEEP!
A particularly intrepid Sheep invents the pickaxe, for all your multipurpose tool needs! Sheep seem to be on a roll. They craft a few more of those suckers before heading into the woods, setting up a camp before beginning to harvest wood. Turns out those trees are oak, which is nice and sturdy, and they have a steady supply of it. A few Sheep are sent to scout toward the mountains, and they make it high into the foothills before they have to stop and rest. They find carrots growing in patches of soil up that way, and they pluck some to bring back to the main camp when they return (the end of next turn, unless they keep going higher). Seems those mountains were a bit further than they realized when they set out, phew!

RATS!
Rats decide to start learning to shape rock, turning the rocks weathered by the river into newer, useful forms for tools. They create a multitool similar to the flint tools used by the Sheep! Using their new tools, Rats harvest leaves and layer them atop their houses, helping waterproof them and also acting as another layer of insulation. Their mud huts are pretty warm now, but can also get a bit muggy when the fog rolls in. A group of Rats are sent to scout upriver, and they find apples growing there that are just starting to ripen. The green apples are sweet and tart, the perfect accompaniment to crushed toad once you pick out the bone splinters!

Using antelope hide, they reinforce their huts to better keep out the drafts of wind. Phew, that made a big difference! Their mood improves. And, not to waste any of the animal, they discover that the stretchy sinewy bits can be used to make a shortbow by tying it to a stick. It's not the best bow ever made, but it makes hunting even easier. They are able to regularly hunt antelope now, and craft an altar of bones to nebulous gods of the hunt, giving thanks to whatever spirits have been watching out for their hunters. In response to the construction of the altar, a faint presence is felt around the settlement, though it is uncertain whether it means anything.

SHEEP!
One of the Sheep scouts returns to the settlement with the carrots, and upon study by Baaristotle, he discovers that by planting them in the ground they can grow more of them. They gain a pop boost and now understand the basics of agriculture. To further their growing endeavors, some Sheep dig a well straight down into the plains, finding water - and finding that the plains rest on top of a chalk flat. The powdery white rock is soft and easy to excavate, but it also crumbles into the water a bit, giving it a funny powdery taste. The scouts in the mountains find a patch of delicious looking stalks high in the foothills - the golden color can only be WHEAT! The scouts to the south find bright red fruit that has a tangy taste - tomatoes! The Sheep in the main settlement feel a presence as well, though theirs is more defined. They can almost hear a voice whispering to them, though they can't agree whether it is promising them something or admiring their efforts or both. When their scouts return with their crops they stand to gain a +2 pop boost.

RATS!
Smart Rats learn that planting apple cores grows more apple trees. They learn about agriculture, and plant a grove of their green apples for future enjoyment. The river ensures they will never run out of fresh water, so there's that! They gain a pop boost of +2 and have larders so full they have to build a store room to hold all their food! Fat Rats are happy Rats, and mood increases. Like the other tribes, a presence seems to be felt by the Rats in their riverside settlement, though like the Dogs it is very unclear. They have so much to be thankful for they don't have time to pay attention to fleeting brushes from beyond!

DOGS!
Dogs develop cured meats, smoking them for preservation. They gain a pop boost due to the extended shelf life of their hunt! +1. Additionally, they begin establishing hunting outposts, marking the best territories to find prey for consistent hunting. The amount of food being brought in is enough that they offer up a sacrifice on their newly crafted bone altar! When the Dogs lay the raw carcass upon the bones, the presence they felt before becomes clearer, and they can almost hear a voice in the sound of the blood dripping off the altar, running over the dessicated bones of their conquests.

Something rises in them, more like a slurry of memory than a voice, a long forgotten stirring shifting something deep inside of them, as it impresses one word into each of their minds. "More."(edited)
RATS!
Rats redistribute their populace slightly to better tend to their new needs. They also turn their sharp wit to the task of taming their robins, building them a coop and learning how best to care for them. By placing the eggs in the coop, the robins begin to incubate them - they should hatch next turn, the first generation of born-in-captivity robins. They aren't good for much right now, but they seem to be content flitting around in the coop and taking turns sitting on the eggs. The scouts discover something like an altar in the forest, carved into a still-living tree, whose branches rise up and curl around again over a nook for offerings. Sap drips from the altar like honeyed blood. One of the Rats has an impulse and slices an apple open before placing it upon the altar. Instantly they can tell that something has changed, as if the forest they stand in is timeless, ancient, full of unknown dangers and promises.

A soft breeze rustles the leaves of the forest, and in it a whisper is carried. "Long has this place been forgotten. Children of the river, our gaze is upon you. What is it you seek?"

>Blessing
>Favor
>Knowledge
>Nothing(edited)
SHEEP!
Sheep reorganize their settlements slightly, and most of the scouts return home. One solitary sheep remains behind on the mountain and by the sea, making shelter for themselves. They don't like being apart from the herd, but for now, they will bear it. Back at home base, the work on the cart is stalled slightly when they puzzle over how to hold wood together. Their rope can only do so much - without something more sturdy to bind them, the planks rattle right off the wheels. They have an easier time of digging a stairwell into the side of the well, creating branching shafts from which they can harvest the chalk. It's soft, so it's quick and easy work, though they notice the land above the mines sags slightly when they displace more of it.

DOGS!
Keeping with their tradition of using all the parts of their prey, Dogs begin to cure hides over the flame, and crafting the resulting cracked leather into a crude form of clothing and armor. It provides some protection should they encounter any unfortunate circumstances on a while out in the hills, plus it's a way to wear their prowess as skilled hunters. Scouting the extent of their grounds, they find foxes chasing small mice around their holes. They make swift work of the foxes, bringing them back to the settlement and admiring their furs. Searching the base of the mountainside, Dogs find granite and limestone but have no way to do anything with it, so they just know it's there now. Yep, that's rocks. Definitely rocks. On a mountain.

SHEEP!
Sheep work on learning carpentry, fixing their janky carts and improving their cabins. They're surprisingly comfy for people who just got the wheel, but then again they are a simple people. They gain a morale boost and can now more easily move their resources between their settlements, though parts of the mountain make it difficult to get up and down. They scout the eastern forest, and find a clearing full of bee hives. The bees have a hard time stinging the Sheep due to their thick wool, but the Sheep notice that they have polinated quite a few tasty flowers like dandelions, okra and daisies. They bring some of each back to farm, gaining a +1 pop boost.

RATS!
Rats hatch their first robins, crushing the eggs and using the powder to make a blue dye. Pretty! They gain a morale boost from the opulence of it, as blue as the sparkling river they live beside. Four scouts travel in each direction - up the river toward its source, and downriver. The scouts that head upriver make good ground, but when they are making camp one night two of the scouts disappear. They hear nothing, but the remaining two scouts are woken by something and run for it, making it back alive. The four scouts that go downriver don't return.

DOGS!
Dogs scout north, and find a herd of moose emerging from the woods. The moose are enormous, with broad antlers that they knock together as they head toward a watering hole. Using their superior tactics, the Dogs take them handily and wonder - are there more? In the meantime the Dogs back at the settlement sharpen flint into useful tools like pickaxes, daggers and such, making cleaning their kills that much easier, and sharpening their arrows more convenient. To celebrate their victory over the mighty moose, they take some of the hide and stretch it over wooden frames, pounding away on them to create drums. They drum through the night, increasing morale around the tribe. Truly, they are favored by the hunt.

SHEEP!
Crafting a communal hall for all of Sheepkind, artisans and crafts-sheep begin to gather there to ply their trades. Working together increases the strength of their unity, passing skills and talents around, until the artisans are able to practice multiple trades with equal deftness. These same artisans begin to explore masonry, applying the same techniques they did to woodworking and finding it successful. They craft two stone goblet bowls for the Golden Fleece and the Black Sheep to commemorate their successful leadership. Meanwhile, Sheep in the mountains carve into the stony walls of rock, cutting out blocks of stone and coming across a vein of tin.

RATS!
The Rats enjoy the favor of the altar, and they feel a choice well before them as the son of the Highest Rat steps forward to answer the whispering.

"Favor it is, young Rat. I can offer you the mark of plenty or the boon of the wild. Which do you choose?"
>mark of plenty passively boosts rats pop growth by +2 and applies to all of their livestock, and can be used to protect their crops from withering or succumbing to disease.
>boon of the wild grants rats the ability to summon a familiar creature from the wilderness, giving them a +15 on scouting rolls and a +10 modifier on combat rolls in which they have the familiar take part.

Meanwhile, the Highest Rat is outfitted in a suit of their new cured leather, dyed a spectacular blue color, and surrounded by an honor guard at all times. The Highest Rat has never felt safer, even as he feels the touch of his son's choice affect him, ensuring that he and all of his offspring can carry on the legacy imbued upon them by the altar.

Development: The Rat tribe develops a weapon using sticks and rabbit hide, one that can fire rocks as projectiles. They invent the Sling
Action 1: In order for the entire tribe to feel more secure as the Highest Rat does, a group of Rats is trained as warriors, in the use of the sling
Action 2: The Prince, with his new gift, summons the robins of the forest to keep a watchful eye and help him as he and his party scout out the area across the river from the Rat settlement

DOGE!
Dogs create one enormous tent for the center of their settlement, right on top of the well. The tribe gathers there to drink, share food, and plan their hunting outings. They gather stone from the nearby foothills and begin using it to craft a storeroom, and though it's roughly constructed it keeps the cured meats inside nice and cool. Finally, they set out to track more moose intent on taking them alive. They find a small herd of moose just as they leave the cover of the forest - and they have several young moose with them! The Dogs descend, managing to capture them all alive, and bringing them back to the settlement to study them. As of next turn, they will start reproducing. Mo moose, no problem! While the Dogs were north by the forest, they noticed a field of tall green stalks with yellow fruit, and bring some back out of curiosity. Looks like corn, folks. Dogs gain +1 pop growth from the new food sources.

SHEEP!
A Sheep bored of eating raw food decides to warm it up, and begins a culinary revolution. Seasoning, roasting, baking and skewering their various vegetables, flowers and herbs, the Sheep are so relieved to have something else to eat for a change that they gain a +2 pop boost. Goodbye, stale grass - hello avacado toast! Sans toast. And avocado. Meanwhile, Sheep in the mountains set about carving the outpost into a proper settlement, including first and foremost a central gathering hall carved into the mountain itself. Then, they set to digging a tunnel to connect to the chalk mines, creating an underground highway that is only slightly visible from aboveground. They decide to set out in search of the presence they felt before - and while they are out searching, the scouts feel it again. Whatever it is, it seems to enjoy their sense of adventure, and draws the scouts along the shore - but a storm begins to wash over their corner of the island, forcing the Sheep to turn back.
RATS!
WIth his choice made, the Rats now have the Boon of the Wild, granting them an ally anytime they call upon nature for its help. With the pact sealed, the whisper seems to fade away, and the tree returns to a normal looking tree - the forest a normal looking forest. It almost seems lesser than it was before, like whatever was special about it has moved on now with this rite completed. Heading back to the river camp, the newly appointed warriors practice with slingshots, using smooth river pebbles that soar through the air in gentle arcs that pack a wallop. Finally, the Rat Prince leads a group across the river to scout with the aid of wild robins. At first, the Rats don't find anything - but the robins do! They lead the scouting party to an outcropping of mossy rock that grows flat white mushrooms. They gain +1 pop growth!

Develop: Smelting & metalwork
Sheep find that the tin ore becomes malleable when extremely hot. Artisans begin experimenting with this new material to learn it's properties & what can be made from it.

Action 1: Part of learning involves teaching others. The artisans begin hosting classes for the sheep youth on their crafts. While only artisans are true masters, it will hopefully give much of the tribe a better understanding of the tools they live with and some basic skills in all of the tribes crafts. Baaristotle likes this idea and will take it further in the future.

Action 2: Explore the mountains.
>>
>>2169723
Development: While preparing his fine meal of mixed rabbit and toad with mushroom garnish, a Rat drops his meal onto a rock right next to a hot fire. The food is seared, and the Rat quickly picks it up to try and salvage it before it burns. He discovers that he's made a dish of wondrous flavor. He encourages everyone to heat their meals on stones near fire, and the cooking sensation sweeps the Rat Tribe
Action 1: The Highest Rat also takes great pleasure in this discovery, and orders a grand feast hall to be built, large enough to house the entire Rat Tribe
Action 2: The Prince once again sets out with the help of his robin companions, this time downriver. They know that a scouting party ran into trouble this way before, but this time they are more prepared, bringing sling warriors to accompany them in case of danger

SHEEP!
As Sheep learn more about the strange shiny rocks that they got from the mountains, they found that the warmer it got, the easier it was to work. They learn metalwork, heating it to shape it, though it is still full of impurities. Perhaps with more time their artisans will unlock the secrets of smelting - but for now they have been unable to get it fully melted to purify the metal. For now, they used the tin to replace some of their tools, making better pickaxes and shears. The artisans begin passing down their knowledge to the next generation of Sheep, increasing the enthusiasm among the herd for the crafting arts. More Sheep than ever want to grow up to be artisans! Finally, the Sheep explore south, with four scouts setting out to look for new resources or perhaps the voices. Unfortunately, the storm continues to rage in their part of the island, lashing rain and hail upon their crops and flattening some of their farmland. The scouts never return, and part of the chalk tunnel collapses due to water softening the chalk further. 6 brave Sheep are lost altogether, 2 from the tunnel and 4 scouts. Thankfully, the rest of the Sheep are glad just to be together, so they don't have any negative morale impact as they weather the storm as a tribe. Sorry Sheep.

RATS!
Ever innovative, Rats become adept at cuisine, and all without needing to ride on a larger creature's head to puppet them through the motions! Cooking catches on, giving Rats a +1 bonus to population and a morale boost! This is only further bolstered by the feast hall that is constructed, where all the Rats can come together and witness for themselves the miracle of the Highest Rat's mystical lineage. After the feast, the Prince sets out to scout downriver with his robin familiars, finding the scouts who were washed over a waterfall by the river. It seems that a swell hit them as they were crossing a ford, and they suffered injuries too severe for them to make it back to the river settlement. Tending to their wounded, the Rat Prince realizes that the inlet next to them is teeming with enormous salmon and gulls coming in from the nearby sea to snap up their roe. The fish are so thick in their breeding frenzy that the Rats can reach into the waters and pluck them free, no net or spear required - and as they breach at the waterfall, the salmon are headed upstream, toward the Rat settlement. They will gain a +1 pop boost from the fish, and regain ther 4 previously lost scouts.

>>2169994
DOGS!
Dogs learn that by planting corn, they can grow it themselves. The first crop yields a +1 pop boost, and also helps feed their new livestock, the moose. They use stone slabs to expand the altar of bones, making it more impressive. This seems to appease something about it, as late that night a groan echoes through the Dog's settlement, a low rumbling sound that spooks the moose and turns three of their offspring pure white. Is it a sign? They decide to explore south, and they hear something that sounds like the drums they play in camp. Following the sound out of curiosity, they find a ring of grasses taller than they are - and in the center of it, a clearing with a raised stone altar covered in strange carvings. The altar seems to vibrate and thrum with energy, and around it, birds flit in ceaseless circles, while rabbits and foxes chase one another in a circuit, foaming at the mouth. Some have collapsed, their bodies limp at the base of the carved stone and its mirrored surface.

Upon the altar lies a skull bigger than any the Dogs have seen before, bleached white from the sun. Its long, sharp teeth and empty eye sockets seem to measure them up, before the skull rises into the air above the altar, swivelling to fixate its blank 'gaze' on the hunters.

"YOU HAVE CALLED TO ME. Now I call to you," it says without its jaw moving, voice deep and rumbling, like the howl that echoed through the camp the night prior. "You offer blood in my name, though it was forgotten. You enshrine my tenets in BONE and STONE. Who are you, children of the moon? WHY have you come?"

The scouts are speechless, staring.

"In my name you have offered many gifts. To you, I offer a token of my esteem. CHOOSE."

Gathering sand from the shore, some brave Sheep weather the storm to bring it back to the plains settlement. Building a larger stone furnace that burns hotter, they manage to fashion the sand into glass, a fascinating development with a multitude of purposes for the Sheep to explore. The furnace also helps purify their tin, and going forward all metalworked tin by the Sheep is free of impurities. The tribe spends time repairing the tunnels as the storm passes, excavating a way around the collapsed section to continue the connection to the mountain settlement. Good work, Sheep, never give up!

RATS!
When the Rats run out of wood, a bright craftsman comes up with the idea of better leverage for chopping away - voila, the axe is born! It's still stone, but it gets the job done, adding some wood to the Rat stores. Speaking of stores, a workshop is built for the Rat craftsmen to do their thing, and this improves the quality and output of future tech. Finally, the Rat Prince sets out with his trusty robin guides, heading upstream hopeful to find the other lost Rats. Unfortunately, he finds only pieces of them - caked in their own fur, bundles of bones stripped of any flesh. The robins guiding him chirp in alarm, and he and his scouts get out of there just in time to see an enormous owl come home to roost in a tall tree far upstream. That's probably an issue to deal with before it learns where the Rat settlement is!

DOGS!
Given a choice, the Dogs don't hesitate, asking the disembodied skull that isn't creepy at all no I'm not creeped out I think you're creeped out it's not me my skin isn't crawling at all SHUT UP JARED, for its gift of STRENGTH. The skull seems to shudder, two flames igniting in its empty eye sockets, and its maw gapes open wide before the flame spills forth - bathing the Dogs present in its warmth. Instead of being burned alive however, the Dogs realize that they have been somehow empowered. The skull falls lifeless to the altar, and all of the animals that were previously chasing one another drop dead. Not even a little ominous. Dogs as a tribe gain +10 to all rolls involving combat and feats of strength. Heading back to the settlement to inform the others, the Dogs decide to expand their footprint upon the plain by expanding their hunting ground, learning to ride their moose to travel further. Finally, they explore to the west, heading up the mountainside and discovering a vein of red-green metal running through the rock. Be that copper, you ask? Probably, because that's like the first metal you get or whatever. So yeah. Copper. Good enough, right?

ANCHOR
Bonus Action this turn: Develop an approach to spirituality and religious worship! Whether that includes the experiences your tribe has had thus far or not is completely up to you.

Herd mentality is a desire for things to be together, to be fulfilled through kinship. Sheeps believe it is natural for spirits to wish to be together, trying to become a unified, complete and perfect being. We all have creamy wooly pure qualities within us. Black wool is the exact opposite. Should either white or black spirits ever become whole, they will attempt to assimilate all of those left to become complete themselves.

There is a "herd mentality" that penitrates everything, the rocks the trees, the sky, the ground. It's why objects fall, bodies rot back into the ground, things mate etc. This omnipresent force is known as the Prime Herd.

Our wool is a sheep's purest essence trying to join with the Prime herd, overflowing out of sheep in an attempt to join with the world, which is why it grows so fast, seems so pure, white & is so warm and lovely to feel.

Giving another person your wool is giving them a piece of yourself, making the entire tribe very close knit (bu dum tsh) as they each recieve and give literal pieces to their other tribesmen. This also reinforces that being part of the herd & caring for eachother is extremely important

The world goes by many names, in common it is known as The Great Puff, but in Sheepspeak it's "Jean, der Foldbelgr". The clouds are it's wool trying to get closer to eveyrhting else via the prime herd, so we dig to get closer to Jean.

Develop: Telescopes

Action: The Black Sheep designates a group of sheep to be the dedicated scouts. They will be trained with purpose, operate in squads of 2-4 and equipped to best survive in the wilderness for extended periods of time as the tribe develops them. Initially they are equipped with a pocket sized tin pickaxe, a tin knife , a tin bottle, food rations and a telescope (which can double up for long distance signals in direct sunlight). (we'll come up with a name when more members are awake)

Action: Expand the tunnels to connect with the lumber and sea encampments. Light the underground highways with holes dug to the surface & covered in glass, as well as torches. Regular carts should travel up and down the highways as public transportation
>>
>>2170167
Development: The craftsmen of the Rat Tribe carve mighty clubs from the chopped wood, ready to be wielded by both the warriors and the High Guard
Action 1: Said wielders train extensively in the use of this weapon, mastering it for combat. They prepare themselves for the coming threat
Action 2: It is time to deal with the great owl, before it is too late. The Prince heads a party, and finds a suitable place near the owl's nest. They set up a great trap, felling logs and leveraging them into place. They leave bait for the giant bird, triggered to spring the trap and crush it under the log's weight when taken. It won't kill the beast, undoubtedly, but it will make it vulnerable. When the trap is finished, the Prince summons a familiar to assist in combat, and his party prepares for battle
Bonus: Nature Spirits inhabit and control the world around us. Countless Gods, and it is by their divine decree that the bloodline of the Highest Rat rules the Rat Tribe. A heavenly right, theirs alone

SHEEP!
Inspired by their close-knit tribe relations (I saw what you did there), Sheep decide that everything ELSE wants to be close together too. The Great Puff Jean (I saw what you did there) pushes out its magestic fleecy clouds just like the Sheep, which is why they carve into it to get closer to the warm gooey center. It's like hugging it. With pickaxes. Due to their desire to bring people and things closer together, the Sheep decide to bring what they look at closer by inventing telescopes. Now, these are extremely crude telescopes due to the lack of understanding of optics, but the lenses inside to grant a slightly enhanced view of the world around them. On the bright side, they're very useful to the newly minted scouts who cart them about and realize that by reflecting the sun, they can signal to each other across long distances. Meanwhile the Sheep continue to dig their tunnels, completing the tunnel to their lumber camp and getting a nice head start on the tunnel to the ocean colony. That one will be completed next turn! The Sheep will be able to travel directly through Der Foldbelgr without ever having to see the light of day! (almost).

RATS!
Rats accept the presence of spirits of nature inhabiting the world around them, granting them a respect for their bounty and blessings. Troubled by the Great Owl they spotted previously, the Rats work with renewed purpose to address the potential threat. They carve mighty wooden clubs, and learn to wield them with a new battalion of warriors. Luckily, they have plenty of targets to practice on as the huge salmon swarm the river beside the Rat camp. Finally when they're ready, they decide to do what they're best at: spring a trap. Not PERSONALLY of course. But they construct an enormous deadfall trap, load it with bait (a Rat) and take up positions to wait. The brave young Rat in the trap plays his shamisen as he waits for the silent embrace of death, eyes closed as he plays his part. Then, without warning, the Owl appears. Swooping into the trap, the Owl's wings knock part of the structure over, though one of its wings is successfully trapped. The Rat Prince and his warriors charge forward, calling the aid of a badger that bursts from the underbrush. Combat begins now! Rats, roll 1d100(+10). You must roll 75 or higher to subdue the Owl. Under 25 kills it.

After the experiences they have had, Dogs cannot deny the divine in the world around them. They appoint a hunter to be the Speaker of the Dead, offering sacrifices to the nameless being that has bestowed upon them its blessings. By bone and stone they praise it for the success of their hunts! They carve a copper mine into the side of the foothills, extracting more of that bright metal and learning to work it. Without a furnace they won't be able to purify it, but they can soften and shape it, replacing the flint of their tools. They also try to have their hunters shoot arrows from moose-back, but it proves to be difficult without a saddle. Still, they persist, and gain +1 pop growth from the extended range of their hunts. Now they can track prey almost all the way to the ocean in the east!

Sheep find that with all the goods and sheep flowing throughout the nation, it's useful to be able to record things. Sheep develop a system of symbols, punctuation and numbers (no maths system yet though) to label things and convey ideas. This also proves useful in writing directions and signs in the tunnels.

Action 1: Baaristotle decides that since the youth is learning crafts in the town hall anyway, teach other things too such as musical instruments and the new writing system.
All big new ideas should be taught here in future. (school)

Action 2: Host a large feast in the town hall to celebrate the connection of the 4 towns. Bringing things together is a reason to celebrate! Sheep allocate their entire populace. Everyone has a purpose in society, and that makes them feel fulfilled. Baaristotle decides that to further this aim, even children have a place, and that is learning from their elders. The Sheep standardize the method of apprenticeship that began with their seminars, formalizing education for their youth. To celebrate this achievement for Sheep-kind, a feast is hosted in the main hall, and Sheep from all over the different settlements come to be together. Sheep gain +2 population as a result of the festival (pop growth remains the same, event based pop result). Their scouts and artisans begin to build watchtowers that keep watch over their tunnels and towns. They gain an awareness of the lands around them, which should come in handy. They gain +10 to rolls while scouting their lands. Strangely, a few Sheep in the mountain settlement seem to have misplaced a few tools, but they can't seem to find them.

RATS!
Thinking fast, Rats decide that instead of hauling the Owl and making it even angrier, they'll fashion a raft and float downriver with it. That works out great, and they can grab more of the salmon surging along the way. After this turn the fish will be gone, and the poor Rats will be able to sleep at night without having to hear fish bumping uglies into the wee hours of the morning. The Rat Prince decides to attempt to tame the mighty beast, looking into its eyes and reaching out... but the magic offered by the spirit doesn't seem to have any connection to the creature in front of him. The Owl is hungry, and struggles in futility against the cords that bind it. The Rats will need to figure out how to feed this creature, and soon - it just vomited up a pellet featuring the bones of one of the Rats it swallowed during their battle. Still, even though it isn't tamed yet, it seems a lot less angry and instead... afraid? In pain? The younger Prince sets off with a familiar friend, but instead of robins appearing, a squirrel answers the call. Together they head toward the tree where they previously met the Great Owl, and find nothing out of the ordinary - not even a Great Owl sized nest. There are regular sized nests though...

SHEEP!
Deciding to revisit the glade where they found the bees before, Sheep manage to figure out how to safely subdue and transport the hive using smoke to put the diligent workers to sleep. Setting up hives among their own fields, they gain a +2 pop growth boost due to the increased efficacy of their vegetables, not to mention having access to honey and beeswax. They dig deeper into the mountain, finding shale, but no more ores. The scouts working on cataloging what they have in their lands find a herd of pink skinned pigs grazing on a grassy knoll, while another scout finds a selection of interestingly flavored plants that turn out to be quite tasty. +1 pop growth for the seasonings! You now have seven secret herbs and spices.

RATS!
Improving upon their work with carpentry, Rats find themselves capable of wondrous woodworking feats. One of these feats is the construction of the Owlcoop, where countless rabbits are offered up to the enormous bird. It is ravenous, and as the Prince continues to attempt to break through its resistance, it seems to be making headway. The Owl permits the Prince to touch it without snapping off his entire arm for a tasty snack! Still, now that the Owl is calmer, he can tell that there is something amiss with it. It eats and eats and eats, then chokes on its pellets, almost as if it is trying to void something from its stomach. Well, there's one easy way in... Meanwhile, the second Prince heads upriver, making it all the way to the source of their lifeblood in the foothills. The water here is sparkling and clear, and potatoes and pure white ermine are found by the scouts. Rats gain +2 pop growth for the new food supplies. When they make camp for the evening, they notice what looks like a fire glowing up in the mountains above them. Curious.

DOGS!
Using their new stone resources, Dogs learn about masonry, easily carving blocks to fit their specific needs. The masonry improves the construction of their storeroom, and aids in the construction of their hilltop fort that they use to replace one of their hunting outposts. The fort features outer defensive walls and a basic keep with a tower, for now. Upon completion of their fort, they send their best scouts north to use their noses, heading into the forests to the north-east for the first time. They catch wind of something new and unexpected - it actually smells like smoke. Carefully creeping through the underbrush, the Dogs come to the edge of a river, where the sound of creatures conversing and splashing meets their ears. Peeking, they see a small town of Otters who live by and in the river! What will Dogs do?

Sheep grind up various plants, rocks & materials available to us, then soak them in water & chalk, creating diifferent colored pastes. These can be used for painting and dying and expression. It's a fun pass time that sheeps can use to decorate things and express themselves.

Action 1: Sheep have a plan to deal with the locust pests.
They create another large farm with lots of sticks planted in the ground, with the tops covered in yummy sticky honey to attract the locust.
Additionally they surround the perimeter of their crop farms with torches, place extra tall torches within the fields and have scouts patrol carrying torches. The fire & heat should be used to keep the locusts away from their crops. Combined this should keep the crops safe & locust free.

Action 2: Capture the locusts from the honey traps and keep them similar to bees. Locusts can be ground roasted/dried as an excellent source of protein, fiber and nutrients, plus once ground up they can be sprinkled onto food to add a wonderful crunchy texture.

SHEEP!
Inspired by the beauty of their resources, Sheep begin grinding things down into colored powders they can use for dyes and paints. Sheep life just got a lot prettier, though the dyes are considered valuable, making whatever it is applied to stand out. While they're being particularly bright, the Sheep decide that they can handle locusts in a similar manner to bees - using flame and smoke to attempt to drive them off. It works in part! They manage to pacify and ward off the brunt of the swarm this week, though their attempt at trapping them largely garners dead locusts. They have enough locusts to add a crunch to their food for this week, but have not yet made them into a sustainable resource or domesticated them as livestock.

RATS!
Though the tribe as a whole doesn't seem concerned by the ichor in their water, they begin figuring out herbal remedies that can be used to treat any who do get sick. They may be immune, but their livestock and crops aren't! The Owl Prince begins applying some of these remedies to the Great Owl, who seems almost dazed by what it is fed. The choking continues however, it doesn't seem that an illness is what is driving it to its frenzy. The Prince can hear the bird wheezing for breath. The third and youngest son of the Highest Rat decides to strike out into the world to find the source of this ichor, and summons a familiar to guide him along the way. A solid black doe emerges fromt the woods, bounding ahead of him with her ears twitching this way and that, alert to every sound. Leading the Prince and his scouts upriver, they come to the fork in the rivers that feed into their own, finding the source of the corruption there. An enormous bullfrog lies dying on the ford there, peppered with arrows and wheezing as it struggles to cling to life. Its black blood is the ichor in the water. It seems to be pinned down somehow, but no other creatures are in sight.

DOGS!
Trying to find a workaround to the scarcity that has struck the hunting grounds, Dogs develop dairy-related food by milking their moose and curing the result into cheese. The moose milk is fatty and full of rich sugars, making the cheese creamy, soft and tangy as it matures. They also relocate their housing to primarily be inside the fort - leaving only a few Dogs at the hunting outposts to watch for herds, and a few at their previous main camp to tend to the bone altar and moose pens there.

Late at night, the Dogs decide to attack the Otter camp they found. Riding out on their moose, they charge through the forest, rounding up 14 Otters on the west side of the river. The rest of the Otters woken by the ruckus manage to jump into the water, retreating to the other side, with 8 being injured or killed by arrows. Either way, the river now stands between Dogs and the main food stores of the Otter tribe, who built on the eastern bank. Staring in horror at the carnage, Otters emerge from mud huts to gather their loved ones, clearly shaken by the events of that night.

Dogs gain 14 Otter slaves, and loot kidney beans, acorns and sugarcane.

Slaves will not reproduce on their own, and actions will be needed to organize and command them. Slaves will pursue a command until they die so long as they are under Dog supervision.

These new resources gives Dog tribe no pop boost yet due to the event, as it is making up for shortages in other food production. When the event is over, they stand to gain +4 pop growth.

Action 2: Move all of the sheep residents into comfy subterranean mountain homes. Each sheep can use their schooled knowledge of masonry and craft their own living areas, with as much room as they like + the knowledge of security & safety. They can also decorate them with paints, wooden crafts, woolen carpets etc. They come up to the surface to work, farm & play in the fields.

Development: After seeing those wounds on the giant frog, the Rat Tribe devises means of treating such injuries. Using the rabbit skin cut into strips, they learn how to bandage wounds, apply tourniquets, splint broken limbs, and other such things. The Rat Tribe invents First Aid
Action 1: The eldest Prince, Ichi, decides that it's time for desperate measures to save the great owl. Something inside it is causing this pain, and it needs to come out. He has a piece of wood specially made to prop the creature's mouth open, then places it after dazing the owl with herbal medicines. He prays to the Gods for success, then dives into its gullet to find and fix the problem
Action 2: San takes the new knowledge of first aid, and heads back upstream towards the wounded frog. He brings with him the warriors, as they suspect the frog was planted there as an attempt at sabotage, and they must be wary. Once he arrives, the youngest Prince intends to treat the frog's injuries as best he can, then cut it free of its bonds

SHEEP!
Some Sheep develop a system of writing, tapping dots and sigyls onto thin sheets of tin to record things using chalk and paint. This method of communication increases the Sheep tribe's ability to retain knowledge and advance further! All information recorded this way is perceived as word-of-god due to the value of their paints and dyes. Attempting their plan with the locusts again, Sheep manage to succeed in catching a glass box full of locusts! They buzz and buzz angrily inside the trap. The rest of the swarm is warded off by the torches and smoke, and the Sheep wake up the next day to discover that huge swaths of grass and trees have been stripped bare by the plague. The locust swarm has shrunk considerably, now 1/3 of its original size. The Sheep officially move in to the mountains in the meantime, crafting their own living quarters into the rock, which presents only mild inconveniences when someone picks their way into someone else's room. The more Sheep are present in the mountain settlement, the more odd bits and bobs seem to disappear from odd corners of their growing cavern.

DOGS!
The Otter slaves are assigned to the copper mines and tending the arable land of the Dog domain - but not before four of them are sacrified on the bone altar. Their dying screams shake the stone of the altar, resounding and reflecting in a sound that twists into a cacophany of something like music. The other Otters are pacified, barely able to stop crying as they try to work. It's easy to tell they're ill-suited to manual labor, but given time they'll toughen up. Meanwhile, Dogs build a forge out of stone, purifying their copper and making it easier to turn into crafted goods. The metal is much stronger and sharper than the rocks they used to use, when they treat it right.

RATS!
Feeling empathy for the creature in pain, the youngest Rat Prince San Zumi singlehandedly invents first aid, applying strips of rabbit skin and other medicines, heading back to see to the bullfrog. When they return to the scene, the bullfrog is still present, but before he can treat it a bunch of furry, striped creatures emerge from the nearby underbrush waving their hands in warning. Though you can't understand them, they seem to be trying to ward off the Rats from approaching the bullfrog, and they are keeping pointedly to its rear. The three creatures have banded, bushy tails and dark masks on their faces, and make no aggressive moves. You have met the Raccoon tribe! What do?

Downstream, Ichi prepares for what other Rats view as a suicide mission - dosing the Owl with herbs to daze it, propping its mouth open, and diving in headfirst. It's dark inside, and uncomfortable, but the Owl makes no move to eat Prince Ichi. Feeling around with his little creepy claw-hand, the Prince feels something hard caught in the bird's gullet, and as soon as he wraps his fingers around it, the Owl begins to shudder and wheeze. Pulling harder, he manages to dislodge the obstruction, and the Owl spits him up, dislodging the wood. Its beak snaps shut with a CLACK! and it stares the Prince down - before letting out a contented coo. Secure that he isn't about to become lunch, the Prince picks up the object, a long handle with a long, slightly curved blade set at an angle. The scythe pulses with some kind of energy, and it doesn't take much to realize that it is responsible for the Owl's size and hunger. Something seems to happen however, and the pulsing of the scythe seems to drift back into the Owl - the artifact crumbling, save for a small piece of metal, enough for the Prince to fashion into a ring.

OBTAINED THE HUNGERING RING

Develop: Mathmatics.
Sheep develop a system to abstractly manipulate quantities , allowing them to work things out before ever lifting a finger. Things like how many tomatoes long something is, or how many logs something will require to build. This system makes building things much more convenient and is a therapeutic mental exercise.

Action 1: There isn't much swarm left so our current tactics should be sufficient. That being said sheep have noticed birds seem to think locusts are yummy. Maybe using our glinting glass + the locusts we can lure & capture some crows while finishing off smoking/capturing the swarm?

Action 2: Make dedicated "Hot" rooms underground for smelting, cooking , metalwork etc. These rooms should have lots of big ovens with chimneys that rise to the surface. The chimneys will allow oxygen to flow in and out of the tunnels as well as warm everything up making it much cosyer & drying out any dampness. Obviously the chimneys should have metal doors to stop water getting in.

>> INTERLUDE, RAT / RACCOON RELATIONS <<

The Rats station their warriors between the young Prince and the Frog, allowing him to approach it and begin tending its wounds.

The Raccoons continue to gesture, seeming to point at the bullfrog's mouth and head. They point to where they are standing, on the opposite side of the animal. One holds up a bow non-aggressively, then points at the bullfrog. One Raccoon points at the frog, then to himself, and mimes chasing the other two Raccoons around, hopping and gobbling things up. One Raccoon mimes springing a trap on the 'frog', and the other two mime shooting arrows at it until the frog collapses.

The heaving green amphibian swells and deflates with pained breathing. The rats gesture to themselves, then point downstream. San then points to the blood, mimes drinking it, then pretends to choke.

The Raccoons seem to consider this. They look concerned, and offer a gesture that seems like a shrug. They mime hauling the frog further aground, but looking toward its bleeding side exposes the black ichor everywhere. A Rat mimes out bandaging the frog to stop the bleeding, but the Raccoons look concerned and make warning gestures again.

SHEEP!
With plenty of free time on their hands, the artisans among the Sheep decide to do something with their writing. They devise a simple form of mathematics, making measuring and quantifying things much more consistent. The Sheep continue their tactic of luring in locusts to trap and burn, nullifying the brunt of this week's assault. The swarm is essentially destroyed or captured. Capturing birds would be a second action, so several of the bees are incensed by their hives being raided for honey and sting 2 Sheep to death. Everything in moderation I guess? The underground Sheep craft hot rooms for crafting, smithing and smelting. These multi-purpose rooms add a little something to the dwarf-like ambiance of the Sheep tribe's hashtag #aesthetic. Hot rooms increase the quality of their tool-smithing projects, but require a steady stream of wood to burn because that's the best thing you have to set on fire right now.

RATS!
The eldest Prince Ichi bonds with his new Great Owl companion, learning to ride her and gaining a greater measure of her trust. It's just in time, too, as his youngest brother returns with stories of the great Bullfrog. Ichi has the answer right on his finger! He mounts his new companion and soars toward the fork of the river, dropping off his middle brother in the process. The Raccoons look terrified of the enormous bird, but seeing the majestic Rat Prince slide from her back holds them at bay, and they watch to see what will unfold. Ichi strides toward the bullfrog, pressing his ring against its porous, damp skin. The ring on his finger thrums as if it is seeking, sensing, and drawing in energies. It glows faintly on his finger, before subsiding. The frog is still alive, but when Ichi removes his hand from the animal, the blood pouring from its wounds is a weak red rather than black ichor. The bullfrog begins to deflate almost, reaching about 4' in height before it lies there limp. The Raccoons stare in astonishment, then pull a horn from their pack and blow several high, resounding notes that echo up into the mountains. The mountains where Ni is heading with his trusty squirrel - and boy, does he ever find something! Not far beyond the source of the river, a town of Raccoons hustles and bustles, each going about their business. Several stop and stare at the Rat, but many greet him in a language he doesn't understand. A few press tokens into his hands, while others seem to try to sell him things. Ni doesn't quite understand, but his squirrel doesn't seem concerned any more than a normal squirrel would. It hops off his shoulder and scampers back into the wild, this is no place for it!

DOGS!
Having slaves working the mines sure helps the Dog tribe with their supply of copper. They have so much that they beat it into armor they can wear over their leather, making them extra safe - and shiny! They gleam with the favor of their bloody nameless god. Dogs ride to the river where they found the Otters before, and find the other side deserted. Looting the mud huts, they find a few dried fish. It looks like the tribe who lived here packed up and made a run for it. One Otter emerges from the woods on the other side of the river, and shouts at the Dogs in a language they cannot understand. The Otter is wearing padded armor and a spear that looks better suited for fishing than for poking people with. Finally, the Dogs begin sniffing out their prey, trying to get to the bottom of the sudden scarcity. They find some carrion that is particularly foul, antelope that collapsed, foam caked around their mouths, lather on their flanks. The bodies are still warm, and hopping with fleas. One of the Dogs is infested.

A sheep's essence attempts to leave the body to join the prime herd for their entire lives, leaving behind the fluffy wool as evidence of it's movements.
Over the course of their lives, more and more manages to seep out causing aging, & eventually when it all escapes (or is freed), this causes what is commonly known as "death".
The body is a chrysalis for the essence to grow before it finally manages to escape and join the prime herd while the cocoon it matured in will then rot back into the world for new souls to use and grow within.

Action 1: In order to facilitate possible future relations with the Raccoons, a new settlement is ordered to be built at the foot of the mountain, right beside the source of the river. It will be a very convenient location to float goods downriver from
Action 2: Prince Ichi revels at finally having free time once more, and goes off to scout yet again. Calling the great owl as his companion, he flies across the river, to yet unknown lands, to see what they may hold
Bonus: The Rat Tribe comes to believe that upon death, one will become a Nature Spirit, just as the ones they worship. Thus, every Nature Spirit once lived a mortal life. What kind of Nature Spirit one becomes upon death depends on how accomplished they were in life. A commoner with nothing to his name may become the Spirit of a mere pebble, while a grand hero might become a peerless divine creature. Naturally, the bloodline of The Highest Rat made up all the most impressive Nature Spirits, as one would expect

SHEEP!
The Sheep have been building things since the beginning, and they figure it's time to work out how best to build stuff. So using their baarithmetic, they develop engineering, improving the quality of their crafted goods and their ability to standardize and optimize various inventions. Meanwhile, some Sheep decide to try spicing up their food by roasting locusts and churning them into their soil. They gain +1 pop boost from this fertilizer! Another Sheep tinkers with saltwater from the seaside camp, and learns that by boiling the seawater, he can collect the water that steams off of it, and also harvest the salt. Salt! While Sheep get to thinking about things as abstract as numbers and letters, some Sheep also turn their minds toward the prospect of the afterlife. They determine that the essence spends an entire life struggling to be set free, finally returning to the Prime Herd upon death. That's a little morbid, Sheep, but you do you.

RATS!
The middle Rat Prince Ni spends this time learning the Raccoon language. It's a slower process than he expected, but he makes good headway. Most of the important Raccoon words seem to be about buying, selling and negotiating. He teaches them a bit of the Rat language as well, which they seem eager to learn. Next turn, Ni will be fluent in Raccoon and be able to teach other Rats. Meanwhile, Rats build a settlement at the source of the river, which seems to raise some Raccoon eyebrows, but hey, you guys seem chill. The Raccoons tell Ni something like "Many river, ours, wash-wash." Raccoons have a cultural habit of washing their food in the river before eating or cooking it, so it seems they're concerned about access to the fresh water. Meanwhile, Ichi mounts his Great Owl and rides west, soaring over a broad lake to land on its western shore. The lake is teeming with fish, and on the banks he sees trees with chestnuts, and flocks of geese wading and honking. He makes swift work of a few geese with his sling, and his Owl swallows one whole with a coo of approval. Rats gain +1 pop growth. Finally, Rats extend their animism to the concept of death. They believe in a cycle of returning to the world as a nature spirit after passing on, varying in impressiveness depending on the quality of their life. This makes Rats appreciate their lives and their culture more, bringing a sort of zen about it all.

DOGS!
Dogs notice that something has shifted among their people. In the time since the last turn, two new members of the tribe have been infested, and the three Dogs have fallen ill, unable to hunt. Fearing a link to the fleas they witnessed, the tribe crafts fine flea combs, brushing themselves daily to prevent infestation. This hygiene gives does an immediate +1 pop boost! Good Dog(s). Moose riders set out from the Dog fort, in search of the source of this plague. Following their noses, they find a few more animals who have collapsed, before locating an enormous mud mound tucked away between the Otter forest and the plains where the Dogs ride. The dried mud mound seems to be literally hopping with fleas, and the Dogs can smell something putrid about it. Perhaps this is connected to everything, impacting the forest animals and the field animals... Another band of Riders search for the Otter tribe again, heading further upriver from where the known settlement was. They find nothing this turn. They start to guess that the Otters may have more settlements east, on the other side of the river. Dogs also develop a merit-based afterlife ideal, where the best hunters who have full productive lives being Good Boys go on to hunt forever in the starry fields of the sky. This puts many Dogs at ease, knowing their actions will be rewarded in time.

Dog pop growth will be halved for the next 2 turns, then halt, unless the plague is resolved.

SHEEP!
Sheep begin asking bigger questions. Not just what and where, but why and how. This leads to the development of the scientific method, whereby their findings are vetted and challenged for a better understanding of cause and effect. This opens new avenues of discovery for Sheep, who have become quite culturally advanced and knowledgeable. Enriched by their understanding of the world, some Sheep begin dying their wool to copy the striped patterns of bees. This causes a rift in the Sheep tribe, with some old-fashioned Sheep finding this to be frivolous and a waste of highly valued dye, an offense to deface their pure wooly essence. Younger, hipper Sheep think that the old Sheep are totally square, dude, and that them not acquiescing to this new trend is pulling the tribe in two different directions. For a tribe built on unity, this is an issue, and morale drops slightly, imposing a -1 pop growth until this is resolved. In other news, Sheep do an exploratory pass through some of their mineshafts, finding a cache of emeralds and copper.

>Sheep cannot research bronze for 4 turns (turn 21)

RATS!
The Rats decide to take advantage of their proximity to the mountains, wondering if they can shape mud into bricks, if they can shape STONE into bricks. Inventing the pickaxe, they begin harvesting stone, though masonry will need to be another development as they had not encountered working with stone before now. This turn, you get mining and the tool to do it! The Highest Rat encounters that snag when he wants to devote himself to construction around the shrine previously found. The Rat workmen begin to build a wooden frame for now, making it easy to add stones later to complete the spirit garden effect. The learned animistic monks meditate beside the shrine, and it seems to grow a little healthier again, though it does not reach out to them. Ichi decides to explore in a new direction, flying past the shrine toward the sea. He finds the shore, and growing nearby are bushes of strawberries, granting a +1 pop boost. The shore is rocky here, with a few sheer (though not very high) cliffs exposing dark stone that the ocean has slowly worn away to the pebbled beach.

DOGS!
Offended by the rank wet-dog odor coming from themselves, Dogs improve their hygiene to bathe regularly, preventing the spread of the infection. Bathing in mountain streams is much more effective than licking yourselves! Not that that stops Dogs from doing it anyway. Ahem. They study the symptoms of the illness - and more than that, they study ways to treat it, finding that lots of water helps the sick, and that feeding them grass makes them vomit to relieve some of the disease. It seems to be breaking! Finally, thankfully, the Dogs destroy the mound, burning it. A cacophany of tiny, unholy screams seems to rise from the mound as it billows sickly green-black smoke, until nothing is left but a pile of ashes. The Dog plague has been eliminated, and the animals will repopulate normally, allowing their pop growth rate to resume normally and gain the +4 from finding the Otter resources. Get knotted, fleas!

Development; quicklime
Action; build Made of Stone bones and plant life
Action hold a town meeting to address the difference in Old sheep and new sheep ways letting them know that no matter what sheep look like or do we are all still the hive mind
>>
SHEEP!
Using their keen scientific minds, Sheep develop quicklime by heating chalk and limestone to extreme temperatures, creating an extremely volatile compound. Why they created this no one knows, as it seems ill-suited for warding off future locust swarms, but whatever. The experiment does get slightly out of hand, and the three Sheep working on it accidentally inhale some of it, causing their lungs to burn and killing them very painfully. Sheep know how to make it and - now - know how to handle it carefully. Meanwhile, some other Sheep decide that instead of seeking whatever voices they experienced before, they will build an altar to coax them closer. Using bone, stone and crops, they fashion an altar before the communal hall in the plains settlement. Upon the completion of the altar, they place crops upon it as an offering - and from the sky, a bolt of lightning splits the altar in two, setting a small fire that is quickly snuffed out. Oh my. The town hall seems to ease some of the tensions, and the sides agree to a compromise: all Sheep will wear one colored band across their wool, leaving the rest unadorned. This seems to be good enough for both sides, as it saves on dye usage, permits celebration of their unity, and also leaves their original fleece visible in its natural splendor. They get their +1 growth rate back!

RATS!
Working with their new stone blocks, Rats develop masonry, completing their palace around the shrine. The Black Palace stands imposingly over the surrounding forest, with a large central courtyard preserving a garden of undisturbed nature around the tree shrine. To secure their access to this stone, Rats develop a mine, which Raccoons show up to visit almost immediately. Raccoons explain (through Ni) that the mountain is theirs, and they will gladly abide the Rats mining into it for a tax of the stone, metal or minerals they harvest. That is, unless Rats have anything else they'd like to offer to purchase the proper licenses to mine here. Red tape, you understand. It seems that Raccoons have a very civil society, focused largely on trade, diplomacy, and the civic greater good. Meanwhile, Prince Ichi flies west, west, west, toward the lonely mountain he noticed before. From atop his Great Owl, he notices what looks like a settlement near the base of the mountain on the east side facing him. Landing nearby, he observes a tribe of curious black and white birds with colored feather tufts waddling about, mining into the mountain and feasting on silvery fish. The Penguins wear various leather cords around their necks, featuring a different number of pearls, though Ichi cannot discern the purpose of such cords. From within the mountain, Ichi witnesses a cartload of gleaming gold emerge, riding toward the southwest away from the mountain.

DOGS!
Setting out in search of those slippery Otters, it looks like there is no new sign of them, no matter how hard the hounds sniff and sniff. In better news, Dogs find tin and a cache of rubies in their mines! It's almost as good as copper, and they begin harvesting it for use. Finally, the Dog tribe develop leather saddles for their moose, allowing them to travel further than ever before! The world is your ...acorn? Development: Starting with Ni, all the Rat Tribe begins adopting the Raccoon's writing system. The same characters will obviously have different readings due to the language differences, but communicating via writing should still be possible. This will make trade between our people a lot easier
Action 1: After learning to read and write, Ni tries to whip up a contract between the Rat Tribe and the Raccoon Tribe on the issue of a mining license. They'd prefer a single transaction over a tax, so Ni consults them, telling them what the Rat Tribe has to offer in exchange, and asking what they would like

SHEEP!
After the incident with the locusts, the storm and the altar, Sheep are feeling less safe. They develop bows and arrows in order to defend themselves in theory, though they've never had to use them - it's not like they hunt, or get attacked. Most of their obstacles have been forces of nature. Regardless, the shortbows are effective. Sheep mine into a new shaft, and strike coal. Coal helps with their smelting and metalworking projects, able to burn longer and hotter than wood! Speaking of burning, the Sheep have the strange idea to put more crops on the altar along with the recently deceased, and this time three bolts of lightning strike it, absoutely pulverizing what remained of the broken structure. The communal hall catches fire and is singed before the flame is extinguished. Whatever it is they're after, they have something's attention - and they can't tell if that's good or bad. A whisper seems to call from the distance near the seashore colony, and it's frenzied, with anger or excitement or something else is hard to tell with how faint it is.

>Sheep cannot research bronze for 2 turns (turn 21)

RATS!
Adopting the Raccoon written language, Rats adopt it to suit their own tongue, though more and more Rats speak Raccoon. Almost half of the tribe is now conversational or fluent in Raccoon thanks to Ni passing on his knowledge. The Raccoon symbols look like variations on a handprint, and they sign documents by resting their hand-like paws in ink and pressing them onto parchment. The result to the uneducated eye looks like someone let a baby squirrel run through the inkwell then dash in lines across a page, but to the Raccoons (and now Rats) it looks like BUSINESS. Racoons use some of the stone they harvested to create a cobble road between their river camp and the Black Palace, making travel easier between these two points. Prince Ni and the Raccoons get down to business to discuss mining rights. After a gruelling negotiation, they eventually agree that Rats will be able to mine at the base of the mountain, but must report any ore or jewels they find to the Raccoons, who have first dibs. As part of the diplomatic talks, the Rats' first aid and herbal medicine is exchanged for the Raccoons' paper making tech.

Sniffing around the rivers, twenty Dogs go the long way, taking an extended way to the other side where the known Otter camp is. They find 4 Otters who were looking over the town, but they expected the Dogs to come from across the river! The 4 Otters are taken captive and made into slaves. There is a scent trail leading east. The scouting party can follow the scent next turn, can return with the slaves, or they can send some back with the slaves and continue onward with half their number. Sniffing for other creatures, they detect no other species this turn, and they make a fairly full pass of the southern end of the island. They do find turkeys though! +1 pop boost. Lastly, the Dogs manage to capture some foxes and begin domesticating them, finding them suitable for keeping pests away from their food store and useful for taking on the hunt. They are playful, and often sneak into the food stores themselves though, replacing the pests they eat by nibbling on the cured food just because they know they shouldn't. Assholes.

Our Bonus Action: With writing now in hand, The Highest Rat decides to have his son Ni record all of their history, for posterity. The young Rat writes carefully, transcribing the tales that his father tells. They begin with the great creation, of how the Mother Earth, the very first being, brought The First Rat into existence. The first being to live out a mortal life, he became a Nature Spirit when he died, particularly the Spirit of the Sun. His Queen, the second being to be created by Mother Earth, became the Spirit of the Moon on her passing. The line that they established from their children continues to this day, unbroken, with the current Highest Rat and his sons. There are countless tales told of various members of the Royal Family throughout time and the lives they lead, and of what kind of Spirits they became upon their deaths. Many of them became the stars in the sky, while others became great divine beasts. The final tales told focus on Prince Ichi, and his magnificent adventures so far. They speak of his connection with the great owl, and how it in truth is his mother, returned to him as a great Nature Spirit after her passing. When the work is done, there are dozens of scrolls in all. It is dubbed "The Chronicle of the Zumi Lineage", and designated as the master copy, to be kept and guarded in the Black Palace. Some copies are made in book form and distributed, while most settle for merely telling the tales. The prestige of the Highest and his kin are now forever immortalized

>Adding the parable woolboy, it's told to young lambs to teach them the important of properly maintained wool, accepting sheep with different qualities as part of the herd & maybe giving christmas presents.

Once upon a time, in a herd long ago
There was a sheep named woolboy, who's wool wouldn't grow.
But he was funny and fit and clever and kind
With all these good traits, surely, no one would mind.

There was one sheep in the herd who caught woolboy's eye
She was a thing of great beauty, to disagree was a lie.
He would watch her with admiration, often for a while
One day she looked back at him and gave him a sly smile

He did not expect this, and stumbled in a fluster
Before taking a deep breath and marching over with all the courage he could muster.
His heart pounded as it hoped for happily ever after
But as he opened his mouth, her friends pointed and howled in laughter

"Ha Ha look at him! A sheep with no wool!
and you wanted to talk to HER? sorry but we're full!"
Woolboy looked at the ground, feeling quite silly
He took another look at his love, surely her heart wasn't this chilly?

She avoided his gaze and joined in the crowd
To Woolboy her laughs hurt the most, none were as loud.
Teary eyed and bitter Woolboy left the herd
"A Sheep without wool?" he muttered, "bah, how absurd!"

Days grew longer and the grass turned to sand.
His heart slowly healed as he wandered the land
Woolboy didn't mind the heat, without wool it was quite comfy
He decided to return home, who cares if they think he's ugly

He came home to a sight, finding all the herd on the ground
Their fair skin was crispy and their white wool had browned.
"Help us" one choked "Please help us we're dying!"
Woolboy knew what to do and off he went flying

He pulled them into shade as to not bake
Then quick as a flash he sped to the lake.
Woolboy nursed them with water and food, for weeks did he strive
He was a machine, doing anything to keep his herd alive.

The herd watched Woolboy work with gratitude and wonder
Their burns reduced and the tribe managed to recover
All together they cheered for Woolboy, hip hip Hurray!
Oh thankyou oh saviour we'll never forget this day!

With his great labour behind him, he smiled and went to sleep
He woke up to find he'd grown more wool than any other sheep!
The girls and his lover marveled, touching his wool "oh wow"
"FUCK OFF" he said as he beat them, "I LIKE MEN NOW!"

Woolboy lived a long life as the herd's golden fleece
With him the sheep were happy and knew nothing but peace.
He kept his wool shaven, giving it to those who couldn't grow their own
Never again would a sheep be made to feel so alone.
>>
SHEEP!
Some Sheep begin trying to make maps out of sheets of wool, but they quickly find that the wool warps, stretches and distorts their creations. They try making maps out of thin sheets of tin instead, and find they have much greater success. They manage to hammer the tin thin enough that it rolls up IN sheets of wool! Sheep have never bested the waters before, but they decide to try. The result of their best woodworking is something akin to a canoe, or closer to a kayak! Either way, paddling the two-Sheep craft out onto the waters in search of the voice that had spoken to them before. With their keen eyes and the help of their crude telescopes, they manage to find something that looks like an altar along the beach. Carved from what looks like obsidian, the curiously shaped stone rises from the waves along the sand, an unmovable monument with a hollowed ring through which the wind off the sea blows. The sound of it is almost like holding a seashell to your ear... And oh, the shells that are strewn all over the central curve of that hollow, exotic and colorful and grand. Was this made, or was it always here? It's impossible to tell, yet one of the Sheep approaches it. Running a hoof over the smooth stone, the Sheep seems prompted to lift their telescope and place it amidst the shells.

The wind running through the hollow becomes that voice, familiar and distant and yet almost imagined at the same time. "Chalkborn," it says, "Far have you strayed, yet here at last you are. My gaze has been upon you, through your toils beneath the earth, and across it. Your spirit gives me hope that all is not yet lost. Tell me, wanderers, what aid can I offer you, to face what lies before you?"

RATS!
Inspired by their use of the river, Rats improve their rafts, creating boats with shallow hulls. These boats can be steered, paddled and turned, making the transport of Rats and goods much easier. Meanwhile, Prince San oversees the new directive of the Black Palace monks, who begin dissecting animals to learn more about how they work. Gaining any anatomical knowledge that grants an advantage will require a development though! For now, it helps sate the curiosity that the growing minds of the Rats have had about certain things. Finally, Prince Ichi sets out with his Great Owl again, and boy is he putting miles on this bird! They make it all the way to the islands, but once they get there, they find low scrub and small turtles. The islands are so small that they can't provide much of interest - but Ichi does find a small, linked, silvery band along the shore. He can't quite tell what it does or what it's for, so he decides to take it back with him.

DOGS!
Dogs send half their scouting party back with the slaves, leaving 10 brave Dogs to press onward in search of the next Otter settlement. Lucky for Dogs, the scent of Otter is so strong with the wind that they easily find the next riverside town. There are several mud and clay huts, but no visible entrances - it seems the Otters have adapted to put the doorways to their huts underwater. Still, the Dogs manage to take the Otters here by surprise again, as they never received a warning from the recently captured Otter scouts. The Dogs chase down 13 new Otter slaves, leaving a handful of other Otters dead when they resisted capture. They gain no further resources at this time. Making their way back to the main fort settlement, Dogs have the bright idea of making a series of hovels for their slaves to inhabit, though this does little to raise their shattered spirits. For the record, I decide if they gain a pop growth, and how much, and right now they are firmly at 0. Finally, confounded by the Otters' ability to slip beneath the rivers to get away, they advance their bows using horns and bones to create composite bows. These bows are able to launch projectiles much faster, and further, good for aiming at fleeing prey beneath the surface of the water.

SHEEP!
Wanting to streamline the process, Sheep decide to separate artisinal crafts from the communal halls, creating dedicated workrooms. This enables the workers to really focus on their tasks, removing distractions and allowing them to more efficiently provide for the Herd. In one of the crafting rooms, one Sheep has an idea - an alloy, and the tribe invents bronze! We're officially out of the stone age! Sheep gain +2 pop growth as a result of this achievement. Sheep tools are now crafted from bronze, though they still have a habit of being misplaced for some reason. Finally, some Sheep decide that if being able to see from the vantage of the plains is good, being able to see from the vantage of the MOUNTAIN would be even BETTER! They begin building the foundations for a watchtower, but before they can get very far, some furry grey and black banded creatures appear on the scene, babbling in a language the Sheep don't understand and attempting to dissuade them from continuing. The creatures don't seem hostile, but they are not very pleased about this construction! The Raccoons gesture at the mountain, then themselves, then wave away the tower in progress. Permits are waved around. They look offended, but progress on the tower cannot proceed until they are dealt with.

DOGS!
Inspired by what they could achieve with stone, Dogs research carpentry, improving the interiors and construction of the wooden homes they build inside of the fort. They are much sturdier, better crafted and comfortable. They still let the Otters live in hovels though, because screw the Otters, it's not like they're people. Speaking of, they allocate the new Otter slaves, and gain a +2 pop boost due to the increase in food production! Finally, a scouting band rides north in search of new races to enslave, and they stumble upon a mountainside mining town occupied by black and white waddling birds. They've found the Penguins! Dogs ride in and surprise them, managing to take out some of the guards who turn to defend the village, but after the element of surprise has passed, the Dogs are swiftly overrun! Two Dogs manage to escape and ride back to camp, telling the others of what happened - the other 8 were taken captive. Ironically, they are put to work as mining slaves, digging up gold and sapphires in the lonely mountain.

RATS!
Prince Ichi has done a lot of travelling, but the time has come for him to return home. Bringing the Great Owl to roost, he passes the mysterious artifact to his brother San to study before retiring for some much deserved rest. San and his monks puzzle over the creation, which seems to have many tiny working parts, though they cannot discern how it moves the way it does. They proclaim that it must be magic, even if its purpose is shrouded. Its shiny face spins and spins while staying perfectly still, leading the monks to frustration. Meanwhile, a Rat who is sure to become a folk hero invents cider and the process of fermentation! Alcohol brings new variety to the Rats, and they recognize that it has value for trade! Rats gain +1 pop boost.

Prince Ni brings a sample to the Raccoons, who are impressed by the flavor and effect of the new beverage! They explain to Ni that the metal they use as currency is sacred, as it is the Blood of the Mountain. Raccoons believe that the Mountain is itself a god who created them, and that by possessing more of the Blood of the Mountain (iron), they get closer to it, and holier. So by minting it as currency, they have established an economic meritocracy, where those who have goods that are worthy to sell become more holy. There are four trade-lords who function as officiaries over the Raccoon government and way of life, and the squabbles between the four are what have led to so many bureaucratic stop-gaps to maintain the peace and regulate who can approach holiness as they have. The Raccoons that Ni is dealing with offer a small amount of iron tokens in exchange for some alcohol, and would be willing to become the official vendor of alcohol to the Raccoon people for a small cut of the profits. Say, 40% for lending legitimacy to the downlander's trade? Sounds fair to him. He offers a small amount as a token of good faith. When Ni offers dye for trade, no vendor seems interested, and one explains that they have their own blue dye, thankyouverymuch. But would you like some of these fine bronze tools perhaps? They're clearly not worth as much as iron, which is sacred, it's not even the same color as the Raccoons, see? Feh!

Gather close to the fire and come and hear the fable of Herculeash the hero of Howlmass. One winter long ago the tribe was in truly dire straits. The Food store where low and the tribe was starving. A blizzard of harsh winter wind had prevented any hunts. The storm refused to pass, so one cold winter night with only enough food for two days more the hunter Herculeash undertook the quest to save the tribe setting out for the hunt in blizzards white blanket of death

Herculeash search across the land high and low he went in search of prey, but as night turned to day and day to night. There was no prey to be had it was as if the storm had eaten them itself. Yet he searched on into the hills he trod but Herculeash was not the only hunter in search of prey, out of the snow a mountain lion lunged taking him by surprise he fell to the snow. Gaining his wits, he grappled the beast. As they tumbled head over tail down the mount. The fight was vicious and cruel. the beast and Herculeash for hours before finally the beast lay dead with its throat ripped out, its crimson blood pooling in the snow. Our hunter stood victorious, proud but mortally wounded. Despite his wounds, he fought on him new that the tribe had only food for one day more.

After hours Herculeash collapsed into the snow and wind lost grievously injured. He rolled onto his back the blizzard strong as ever it seemed to laugh at his failure with every gust of wind. As darkness began to fill his vision the moons broke through the sky to bath the fallen hunter in its soothing light. With the last of his strength, he howls to the moon for one final time. Then only the yowling winds remained.

But this was not to be the end of Herculeash, with a gasp an start life was returned to him, his wounds healed. As he sat in awe, a voice a smooth as water and soft a fur spook to him. “I am the moon goddess Howly you have called on me in your hour of need and I have come to now go Herculeash complete your quest and take my blessing”

so He stood and began the hunt again Feeling stronger, faster, mind sharper. Herculeash returned to the tribe with more prey than any lone hunter ever had. Going out five more times into the storm to fill the stores returning each time with a bounty of prey singing the praises of the goddess Howly. So now every year we give thank and praise to howly, goddess of the moon giver of life. So, end the story of howlmass.

DOGS!
Learning to alloy copper and tin, Dogs create bronze! They gain +2 pop boost for reaching the bronze age, and upgrade their tools, weapons and armor appropriately. This prepares them for the raid to come - along with the four sacrifices they offer to their bone altar. The blood of the offering drips over the altar, seeming to shimmer as they feel the presence of the Unnamed God well around their warriors. Dogs gain +5 to all rolls in the coming battle (total, +15).

100 Dogs don their armor, grab their weapons and ride their moose north to the mountain where they found the penguins before, sitting a fair distance back in the woods until night falls. As the light dims, they surround the perimiter of the mining village, observing the way that all of the buildings have been built in concentric rings around an open courtyard that spawns roads toward the mountain. Notching their arrows in their compound bows, Dogs draw, aim and loose flaming arrows down on the unsuspecting village. The first volley soars in a blazing arc through the air, fire sputtering around the arrowheads as a good half of them land on rooftops of the near side of the village. Another round is loosed before the sound of an echoing horn blast sounds from somewhere inside.

A sound of clamoring rises in the village, and as the fire begins to catch on the wooden rooftops, the Dogs charge. Their ranks are forced to break due to the circular nature of the village, a less effective pincer as they try to find a passage into the village large enough to charge through. They have to ride almost all the way around the village to make it to the mountain roads, and as they begin to circumnavigate the town, small, cold pellets begin to strike them. They bounce off of their bronze armor, but parts of their exposed fur and their moose begin to groan as the hail of projectiles continues. One Dog finds one fall in his lap, and he notices the pellet is almost clear like ice, but metal hard. 17 of the attackers are knocked off their moose by these projectiles, leaving them trampled, injured by the fall, or killed by the stones themselves.

When the splintered Dog charge reaches the roads, they find ranks of Penguins waiting for them, while other Penguins work to put out the fires in the village. There are at least 65 Penguins armed with halberds and slings standing in ordered rows, with 83 remaining Dogs. The front rows of Penguins lower their halberds as the Dogs charge, skewering moose and knocking other Dogs off of their mounts, while the back rows again pelt the charging forces with those stones. Another 14 Dogs are killed, though when Dogs break through the front ranks, their spears take 8 Penguins as well. 69 Dogs and 57 Penguins remain.

DOGS! (II)
The Penguins wear armor composed of that same strange metal, almost clear, and one Dog who jumps off of his moose to impale a Penguin brushes against it, finding it freezing cold to the touch. Around the camp, the fires seem to be steadily put out, with civilian Penguins remaining in their homes rather than fleeing into chaos. For a battle, this seems oddly calm, and even the Penguin guards and warriors seem to be perfectly collected in the heat of the moment. Without chaos to take advantage of, Dogs look kind of like idiots, forced to dismount once the Penguins reform into a set of concentric rings like the village itself, forcing Dogs to approach from the center, where they are again pelted with stones and slashed at with halberds of that same metal to make them keep their distance or pay the price. 7 Dogs die, leaving 62 remaining.

Finally, one Dog gets his arrow, and begins shooting at the Penguins on the back line. Though some arrows glance off of that armor, 11 Penguins fall, and the Dogs are able to advance as they quickly slide into a new and shrinking formation. Able to surround them now in the center of the village, almost all of the fires have been put out as the forces clash one last time. Both sides take losses, but Penguins maintain their tactics that seem to foil many of the Dogs' impulsive rushes, until finally the Dogs regroup to assess their situation. 47 Dogs remain, and 46 Penguins.

Seeing that the Penguins' discipline and formation hasn't broken for a second, and the losses they've taken, the remaining Dogs pull back, heading for their moose. While retreating, another 14 are downed by projectiles, being unable to get to their moose, or by halberd. Some survive to become Penguin slaves. 33 Dogs make it back to their home settlement in one piece, leaving 67 behind, dead or captured. Morale for the Dogs drops dramatically after their defeat, but they vow vengeance on the flippered foes. (-67 pop, 7 captured) The morale drop incurs a -3 pop growth rate. However, some of the Dogs managed to hold on to the projectiles, and they will be able to study the metal to learn about it next turn if they'd like.

SHEEP!
After meeting the Raccoons, Sheep decide to attempt to learn their language, to better understand them and what it is they want or have issue with. A few important Sheep become fluent in Raccoon this turn, and the entire herd will be fluent or conversational at the end of next turn. They try to learn about the Raccoon life and culture, and the trash pandas seem to calm somewhat at how sensible Sheep seem. They made efforts to learn their language, they brought gifts... Raccoons explain that the mountain is theirs, and is sacred, and that nothing can be higher than the mountain because this is an offense to the mighty peaks. They explain that Sheep don't have permits to build and that they require a tax for Sheep's presence on the mountain, which belongs to Raccoons. They explain they consider the mountain sacred and it was crafted for them. To smooth things over, they offer Sheep some blue dye, seeing that they like pretty colors. Perhaps that will convince the fluffy things to pack up and go back where they came from, yes? Raccoons are willing to allow Sheep to remain on the mountain for a tax of whatever they mine, and insist that they have first dibs to any Blood of the Mountain (iron) because of its sacred value to them. They also are firmly against Sheep building a tower due to their beliefs, and would relent and consider issuing building permits for a tower further down one side of the mountain, but not on top of the mountain, should they be properly convinced (i.e. bribed, paid, etc). Sheep scout in the eastern forest, but they find a grizzly bear and her cubs, who chases the scouts almost all the way back to the village.

RATS!
The entire Rat tribe is now fluent in Raccoon. The monks of the Black Palace begin to apply fermentation to certain things, like apple seeds and mushrooms, creating potent poisons. Tested on one Rat, they find that they even make Rats sick, though they would be far more lethal when applied to other less resistant species. They build a Brewhouse that serves alcohol endorsed by the Highest Rat and his family - and a trio of brews inspired by his three sons. Ichi's is light and fizzy, Ni's is darker and bitter, and San's is sour and sweet. They also set up a checkpoint by the river, ruffling the feathers of the Raccoons who come to wash their hands and food. Still, they understand, paperwork is all in order, right? Them's the breaks. The trade-lord who presides over the nearby village descends himself to the riverside, approaches the checkpoint, and smiles at the Rat guards before making a show of washing his hands in the appropriately designated area. Then without comment, he turns and leaves. Rats can hear the sound of stone being worked after that, and in the mountain above the checkpoint, Raccoons create a basin to catch the water that was feeding the river. It spills over, but it lessens the flow of the river by quite a bit, and tide-marks can be seen where it used to flow.

The shrine shudders when the Sheep indicate a desire for education. It seems to be thinking, remembering maybe, or mourning, as it goes silent. Though the polished mirrored surface of obsidian doesn't move, it almost seems to diminish for a moment before the voice becomes clearer. "Many dangers walk these lands, but none so terrible as the strangers," it says, "Time and again they return, and destroy, and drain, until the cycle begins again. We used to be mighty, my sisters and I! Unbridled wonders, miracles! But when the strangers learned of us and our power, they tricked us for our gifts and used them to bind us to these shrines. I feel my sisters fading away, now, forgotten. Our own essence is all that is left, and each boon we offer is carved from our own flesh, our own soul. It lessens us, and soon we will be gone. Far you have wandered, children of wool, and farther still must you go before you will find my sisters. Will you free them, before it is too late? Will you offer up to us in our turn, in our fashion? The time has almost come for the strangers to return. The hour runs short. From my own favor I have a gift to offer you, a gift to help you on your way. I ask nothing for myself - only for my sisters. Will you do this for us? One last adventure before the storm fades. In my name, will you travel?"
>>
Sheep agree to the shrine's quest! Any help is appreciated though, does he know where anymore shrines are? maybe nearby? Sheep don't have a great scouting track record

Develop: Bronze armour

Action 1: Sheep invite the racoon trade lord(s) to the sheep town hall to discuss business. Sheep explain they are excited to be involved with and build relations, but this concept of money and taxes is extremely alien to them. Since sheep have been to the racoon town, they believe it's only right for the racoons to come visit them, but considering the clearly serious nature of this lasting diplomacy the terms should be created and agreed upon Trade lord to Black sheep. Have a banquet in their honour before sitting down to discuss business terms. Request they bring a peace offering.

Action 2: When they come to meet us request weapons are left outside. Then half way through the diplomacy meeting, capture the trade lord & his men. Kill if nessesary but the trade lord is not to leave the council hall. He is to be tortured and interrogated and imprisoned for detailed information on all of racoon kind (settlements, iron mine, numbers, tech, secrets & other civs they know + details on them). If asked by racoons where the trade lord went, say he never arrived & maybe something happened in the forests? we got attacked in there you know & a shrine told us the lands are full of danger. Even offer to send a scouting party with racoons to find the trade prince.

>The black sheep will not allow his sacred herd to be limited in any way by greedy woolless racoons. If you deal with sheep, it must be beneficial for sheep.

Sheep search party is to emphasize that sheep are not up to anything & don't want to be accused after literally just meeting racoons. We're innocent and want to help!

Development: The Highest Rat has started to put his interest back into the culinary arts, and in turn has put his servants to work preparing new food items for his feasts. In recent they've started to experiment with the gathered chestnuts by making dough out of their insides and cutting it into noodles. The Rat Clan develops Chestnut Flour.

Action 1: The Racoon Basin has started to slow the flow of The River to a degree that has become worrying to The Clan. As a result plans are made to go and settle a new area along the edge of The Western Lake where our Chestnut Orchards will not be reliant on the shrinking river that our Apple Orchards already use.

Action 2: To better increase the effectiveness of our hold on The Downlands we shall train our Patrol Rats in the art of Robineering. With this we intend for them to become better at detecting intruders through use of bird calls and aerial views of the lands below.

Minor Things:
We wish to give names to our Settlements.

RATS!
Rats prove that once again their cuisine is the best in the developed world! They craft fine noodles, flatbread and dumplings out of chestnut flour, gaining a +1 pop boost while the Highest Rat dines like a king in the Black Palace. Sharing some of these new treats with Raccoons nets instant interest! Raccoons are pleased to be involved in a trading relationship with Rats, selling their alcohol and paying a portion of the profits, but now they wonder about buying these cooked goods as well! There's holy iron in it for you if you agree! Meanwhile, Rats decide to follow the water, and create a settlement along the shore of the lake previously found by Prince Ichi and his Owl. The water is so clear, and the geese are so obnoxious, it is the natural marvel of all of Rat-kind's experience of the world. Finally, Rats begin to train Robineers, which helps them keep an eye on their surroundings. Rats gain a +5 bonus to detecting intruders! Rats detect no intruders this turn. :^)

DOGS!
With the samples they managed to bring back, Dogs begin to study the metal used by the penguins to uncover its secrets. They notice that it is cold to the touch, and extremely hard - but something isn't quite right about it. They try to melt one down in the furnace to see if they can reforge it, but when the metal cools they're left with what looks like some sort of trash metal alloy. They are very confused, and don't melt any of their other samples down, instead trying to hammer them into different shapes, and breaking the smithing hammers used to pound on the projectiles. Whatever it is, it's very hard, and not easy to recreate using the methods that Dogs are aware of. It is dubbed icestone for its cold property. Some hunters go out into the wilderness, exploring the area between the Dog fortress and the Penguin mountain. The forest between the two territories is full of turkeys and boars, which the Dogs successfully hunt, gaining a +2 pop boost. Finally, a squad of moose-riding Dogs set out north, riding through Penguin lands prepared to pepper their village with a rain of arrows. Unfortunately, they are met by a riding party of Penguins riding enormous white bears that have been bedecked in the same icestone barding that the Penguins themselves wear. After exchanging a few volleys of arrows and slingstones, 3 Dogs die before turning and breaking for home. They report that Penguin parties are riding through their lands, patrolling a perimeter around the lonely mountain.

SHEEP!
Accepting the plea of the spirit in the shrine, the Sheep can practically feel the swell of passion that swirls around it, while the sand of the beach blows gently upshore. The water ripples, and the shrine hums. "There is not much I have to offer you, for my adventure is nearly over as it is. Take this, woolborn, and free my sisters. May it shepherd you safely to their shores!" With that, a splendid ship rises from beneath the surface of the water - a longboat that can fit 25 Sheep, with gold and wood barding along both sides. The figurehead is a mighty ram with two curled horns facing toward the horizon, one hoof extended outward and upward as if in hope. "This, Sheep, is the Baargonaut, a ship that cannot sink. May it guide you before it is too late." The voice fades away like the memory of a dream, leaving only the altar and the ship as evidence that anything ever happened at all. The Baargonaut is an artifact! It cannot sink, and grants +10 to navigational rolls, even to places you haven't been before!

Meanwhile in the mountains, Sheep feign innocence about the matter of how economics work. They're just, like, you know, that's so many numbers! Like, and stuff! Or whatever. *pops bubblegum* They usually just put it on daddy's platinum card. What's platinum? Uhhhh... Ahem. The Trade Lord is flattered by the invitation, and haughty enough not to question the motivations of these stupid fluffy livestock animals. They've fleeced plenty of people, and that was before they'd even known what fleece really was! So the Trade Lord attends this banquet, and in honor of the Sheep people, she brings a live robin to sing for the Black Sheep and a cask of alcohol purchased from the Rats. Her guards balk at being asked to leave weapons outside, but their silver daggers are largely ceremonial anyway, so they don't question it. The banquet is like nothing the Raccoons have ever had before, although it reminds them of these marvelous delicacies that some other Downlanders have dreamed up. Noodles! Who would imagine. When the time comes to capture the Trade Lord, her guard is well and truly down. When the Sheep make their move, she is stunned, struggling and knocking over the robin's cage as she is captured.

SHEEP! (II)
The Trade Lord and her guards are taken deep into the Sheep settlement, and the interrogation begins. She seems genuinely afraid for her life, and keeps wailing and promising to tell the Sheep everything so long as she is let go alive. She says that the Raccoons have only one iron mine, and it's almost depleted, and that Raccoon's greed is on the brink of destroying them. She said that is why she and her brothers, the other three Trade Lords, have claimed to have as much iron as they have, so that no one wonders where it all disappeared to. She said that most of the iron was melted down to create a relic, and they have begun using copper coins coated with iron instead of the real deal! SCANDAL! Between her sobs, she tells the Black Sheep of the Rats and the Otters to the north and south, and that there are dozens of Raccoon settlements in the mountains. They number in the thousands! She says if the Sheep let her go, she will give them all the iron she has, she says her brothers will ransom her whatever the cost! The only special resources/tech that Sheep may be interested in could be paper, cotton, silver, net-making and the elevators that Raccoons use to traverse the inside of the mountains along their roads. Now please, please, please! she begs.

When the Black Sheep asks about military might, the Trade Lord sobs, shaking her head. She can't, she CAN'T! She says they'll cut out her tongue if she speaks of it. She cries, her beady eyes welling with tears as she recounts tales of the Raccoons and their throwing blades, and how they can hit a moving target like it was sitting still in front of them. She says there are trained squadrons under each Trade Lord's purview, but they haven't been needed in ages. The relic she speaks of is enormous, some kind of offering to the Mountain to help it regain its strength. She says the Mountain is rotting from the inside out, and they must save it, but her brother knows more about that than she does, she swears!

Development: Using the leaves of the strawberry plant, the Rat Tribe invents Tea. Considering it a classier beverage than alcohol, they come up with tea ceremonies at which they can fully appreciate it
Action 1: Ni, ever so eager to deal with the Raccoons as a respected equal, comes to them to agree to the terms of the Noodle Deal, signing off on the contract. He also offers his business partners a taste of the Rat's newest beverage, telling them that it's the new high-class drink among his people. He says there's more waiting if they want to make a deal in the future, and leaves it at that. There is indeed some waiting, as he's brought a special blend of his brother San's design and has it stored nearby. Not too out in the open, but certainly not hidden. Easy enough that someone could sneak in and take it, though Rats know not to via direct instructions from their prince. Were anyone else to take it, they would find that it is poisoned, and they would suffer fatal consequences shortly thereafter. But, whoever took it would be a thief, after all. They would merely be bringing it upon themselves
Action 2: The residents of Kurizumi catch some of the wild geese for domestication, and try to begin regularly collecting their eggs as a new food

The tales are played out, accentuated by occasional song and dance, and by the end, the Highest Rat is crying out of joy for the wondrous production he's created. Preparing for what is to come, Sheep develop crossbows, able to shoot bolts a fair distance. They take a minute to reload, but they're way better than just flinging rocks at people. They also start storing food, amassing a percentage of each harvest to help fill the larder and ensure that winter doesn't sneak up on them. Meanwhile, some Sheep playing with shears come up with the idea of styling their wool - and it's a hit! Sheep have never felt more stylish, and they begin spreading the revolution through all of the settlements. Finally, Sheep kill the Trade Lord and her guards, then take part in an elaborate ruse to try to frame another Raccoon for the act. Raccoons are outraged, and swear they will get to the bottom of this! They take the bodies of the Trade Lord and her guards back to the mountain.

RATS!
One of the Highest Rat's personal cooks happens to have an idea one day - saving the leaves of the strawberry plant and boiling them in water. The result is a delicious delicacy, and together with other noble consorts, the ritual of the tea ceremony is codified. The proper position of the cup on the saucer, the method of carefully brewing the tea and presenting it to guests - it is all so elegant. Rats gain a morale boost because they're fancy bitches. This grants +2 pop growth. Meanwhilte, Prince Ni is bartering with Raccoons again, agreeing to sell them noodles and other chestnut flour delicacies in exchange for iron tokens. Rats now have some iron, enough to start doing something with it if they so chose - but they haven't even researched basic metallurgy! They introduce Raccoons to tea in the process, something that fascinates them. They covet everything new and interesting, and Rats are ALWAYS coming up with new and interesting things! Consorts of Prince Ni inform him a few days later that someone poisoned 5 of the Trade Lord's guards, and another Trade Lord is missing. This is most concerning - the Raccoons are starting to suspect foul play! Surely the Rats aren't involved, right? Rats catch and domesticate geese, adding feathers meat and eggs to their resources. They gain an additional +1 pop for this. One of the Raccoon Trade Lords approaches Prince Ni, sharing concerns about his missing sister, asking if Rats would be willing to assist them as they have proven to be trustworthy allies. Raccoons are willing to pay in a combination of gold, jewels and iron.

DOGS!
Dogs begin painting their fur, making them look nice and terrifying before battle. The idea of highlighting moments of victory and triumph inspires the downtrodden hounds, gaining a morale boost! And a +1 pop growth boost! Unfortunately, that's about as good as it gets for the Dogs. One band of Dogs rides north to pick a fight with Penguins, and boy do they ever find one. A band of Penguin bear riders on patrol form up, and the fire arrows glance off of the icestone armor and barding. One polar bear and two Penguins fall, while 6 Dog scouts die and only 2 live to ride away and tell the tale. And that's being generous because you probably meant to send more than that. Another band of Dogs rides east, because they haven't harrassed the Otters in a while. The nearest settlement is starting to rebuild, but this time there are guards present and watchful. Dogs pepper the settlement with arrows, while Otters with pikes guard the civilians trying to escape. Many do make it out - but another 21 are taken captive, with only 6 Dogs falling to the defenders. Otter slaves are nearly a third of the Dog population now. Half of the new slaves work the mines, the other half become pleasure slaves. The victory and prostitution helps bolster Dog morale, bringing it back up to neutral! They gain +1 pop growth.

Development: With a good supply of iron, the Rat Tribe has to come up with a way to use it. They develop the forge, appending it to their workshop, and heating up their iron in it to make it workable. The Rat Tribe develops metallurgy
Action 1: The very first thing they make once they can work iron is an upgrade to their warrior's wooden clubs. They create the kanabo, a huge studded iron club that can even smash through armor
Action 2: In the depths of the Black Palace, Prince San begins work on a new project. Using all of the tools at their advantage, Sheep learn the secrets of herbal medicine, improving their pop growth by +2! Their medicine is extra effective because it is tried and tested by the scientific method. Go, Sheep! They also amend their education to include the physical arts, creating Sheep who are more fit and trained in basic martial ability. Finally, they set out along the coast in their new Baargonaut. For the first few days and nights, they don't see anything but shore and what looks like sandy dunes. But just when they're about to turn around, the ship seems to veer to shore, and deposits them along an arid coastline where scrub and dry trees are clustered. Sending a few scouts to investigate as the sun sets, Sheep find traces of a river - and a recently extinguished fire. Could it be there's something here after all? As the evening cools, they must decide whether to press into the scrubland and desert or whether they turn around and report their findings.

RATS!
Accepting the trade deal, Rats gain a decent store of iron. Man, tea is a hit among the Trade Lords! They express their deepest gratitude to their partners. Using their newly acquired iron, Rats develop a forge and metallurgy with some tips from Raccoons, learning to replace their tools with iron. They use the iron to create studs to improve their wooden clubs, giving them quite an edge against armored foes. Improving their weapons and tools uses all extant Rat iron, though they will start over with a little next turn. Lastly, Prince San decides that it is time to militarize the monks he has been training with. He creates a secret sect of the Black Palace monks known as 'ninjas', assassins already versed in the ins and outs of anatomy who add stealth and infiltration to their repertoire. Ninjas gain a +10 bonus to stealth rolls.

DOGS!
Against the popular paradigm of the tribe, one Dog has a long sit and a long think and a long stare at the moon one night, wondering why rushing in blindly against the Penguins has been failing them. Then, while merrily licking himself in his downstairs regions, it strikes him! TACTICS! The Dog can barely put the lipstick away before he rushes to tell the other Dogs of his idea - NOT FUCKING BLINDLY RUSHING IN TO HEAVILY PREPARED FOES! This makes ENORMOUS waves in Dog culture, and various strategies are discussed, as all of the ideas Dogs had been hiding in shame finally come to the forefront. They can be savage barbarians - without losing half of their tribe every time they get the urge to knot some monochrome cloaca! Monochloaca, as it were. This same Dog hero, Houndibal, has the brilliant stroke of genius to scout out the Penguin defenses and tactics before they blindly rush in again. The entire Dog populace is floored by the sense this makes, while the Otter slaves wonder how these people ever got the best of them, and are generally embarrassed. More about them later.

For now, a squadron of Dogs rides north to observe the Penguin patrols, learning the timing of them, and noticing how they always ride in perfect formation. Carefully sneaking further in to Penguin land, they notice Penguin guards sparring and practicing outside of the town the Dogs tried to raid before. Their formations are tight and identical, lines of ranks that when threatened become circular formations to draw foes into a rounded pincer. Maybe if Dogs could find a way to cause Penguins to abandon their formations, they'd actually stand a chance... hmmm... Even Houndibal views this possibility with skepticism. But Dogs now know how to sneak past the Penguin patrols and more about their fighting formations!

Finally, back to the Otters. Houndibal proposes instead of raiding and killing the Otters, use their upper hand to negotiate with them! The only problem is that Dogs don't speak Otter, and their slaves have only picked up enough to not get themselves killed. They understand pointing and violence and fear. So when Dogs ride out with a handful of Otters to translate, the Otter villagers look terrified, civilians fleeing as the guards step up. Speaking in Otter, the slaves communicate with the Otter guards. The guards seem to consider the situation, then head into one of the store rooms, pulling out a basket of river fish to send back with the Dogs. This will do, yes? On such short notice? Dogs gain a +1 from the fish, and having something familiar helps the Otters begin to reproduce too. Otters now have a +1 growth rate per turn, when they aren't being raped or worked nearly to death in the mines and fields.

Action: KNOT some doggish into the most loyal otter, then go back to the otter town and reiterate, as I we think some of our demands were lost in the lingual barrier.
We demand that they deliver us slaves, ore, and food on a regular basis, and that in the absence of food or ore, send double the amount of slaves, and that slaves are the minimum tribute that they can offer. We should also send enough wolves to mount a raiding party on the town if it comes to that.
Action: scout up and down the mountains closest to us.
Research: In the shocking realization that maybe a military can be more than a group of dogs ready to find th next recipient of their knot, the dogs begin planning out some better armament standards for the minimum required to raid, starting with inventing and adding Shields to the roster, along with "spear" and "being dog or having sufficiently doglike complexion."

Development: In order to put out more chestnut based products, a more efficient method than hand grinding is devised. Using the flowing of the river, they turn stones to grind chestnuts all without any ratpower directly involved. The Rat Tribe invents the Mill
Action 1: Prince Ichi has had enough of a siesta, and sets out once more, taking flight upon his trusted companion. Staying a bit closer to home for his first flight in a while, he decides to check out the area up the two rivers that feed into their lake, before the mountains. It would be best for the Rats if they were able to keep hold over that area. He also might happen across something useful
Action 2: An area is dug out adjacent to the Black Palace, and cells are built down in it. This area will be the dungeon, and it will house the prisoners of the Rat Tribe, whether they be Rat criminals or foreign ones. San has a passageway built between the dungeon and his lab, in the event that he has any use for its occupants

SHEEP!
Deciding that the time has come to dedicate themselves more fully to knowledge itself, the Sheep craft a university, the height of their accomplishment as scholars and academics. The brightest artisans, workers and theoreticians gather there to argue into the wee hours of the morning, improving the variety of thought that Sheep have access to. Twice per season (every 15 turns) this will allow Sheep to re-examine one of their existing advancements and branch off of it or upgrade it as a bonus development. The first use can occur on turn 30! There is no cooldown, but once both bonus developments have been used, they don't recharge until the next season begins (turn 45/60/75...). Sheep expand their farms, increasing their footprint on the plains as they replace the stunted grass with delicious crops. They gain +1 pop growth. Finally, the Sheep adventuring on the Baargonaut discover something curious. While the Sheep waiting on the boat remain patient, they start to grow antsy as the scouts don't return. Suddenly, one bursts from the underbrush, jogging at top speed, throwing himself onto the ship and frantically bleating to shove off. "Monsters!" he claims, "Horrible monsters!" According to the scout, it seems the other 9 scouts were taken captive, so he turned and ran to warn the others. He says they need reinforcements, and that the hideous creatures of the scrubland will come for them if they don't get out of here, and FAST! Meanwhile, a representative of the Raccoons approach the Sheep in the mountains, offering them a small cache of jewels, tea and paper for their help in exposing the plot that killed the Trade Lord. They hope these tokens of gratitude will make up for any inconvenience caused, and would like to pick up the trade talks that were so unceremoniously put on pause while the other matter was dealt with. The Trade Lord's son, who inherited her wealth and position, would love to meet the Sheep and work out the details.

RATS!
Using the power of the river, Rats invent the mill, streamlining (haha) the process of making their chestnut flour and products. They gain a +1 pop boost for their ingenuity! They recon that using the hydraulic power of the river could probably be used for other things, but there might be some steps along the way to get there. Ichi goes flying up the rivers to scout the entirety of Rat territory. He doesn't see any Raccoon settlements - except maybe one on the mountain in the distance - but he finds pears growing in the rich soil there. (+1 pop growth!) Lastly, cells and a dungeon are dug out beside the Black Palace into which wrongdoers can be tossed and drunks can detox. The special passage to the labs seems like a shifty development, but only time will tell...
>>
>>2180358
DOGS!
The Dogs develop more stringent standards for their smash-and-grab style horde, limiting the number of Dogs who can ride into the fray at any given time. It also improves the quality of their fighting forces, making sure that only the best trained mutts are ready to show the rest of the world what Dogs are made of! Not literally though, they want to keep what they're made of on the inside, thanks. They then teach their slave Otters the basics of Dog - and out of fear and having literally nothing else to do, the Otters quickly pick up on it. The Dogs bring these six fluent Otters back to the riverside town to repeat their demands - but before they get there, they find a force of armored Otters headed their way! DOUBLECROSS!

It seems that while you were trying to get your slaves to communicate your demands, they were actually telling their kin where to find the Dogs, and the Otters forces have assembled! These are no mere river guards with padded cloth armor and a smile in their hearts. These Otters are more serious looking, carrying pikes and falchions. The slave Otters squirm, managing to break free of the Dogs' grip as the free Otters charge! Arrows fly, swords slash, spears impale. When all is said and done, both sides faught valiantly, and both took heavy losses. 33 Dogs perish on the riverside, while 38 Otters stain the water red. Only 7 Dogs survive to make it back, having lost their Otter slaves. Other Otters got away, including some of your former slaves. This certainly doesn't bode well... The last thing the Dogs see as they disappear into the treeline is that the closest Otter settlement appears to have been transformed into a barracks, militarized and prepared to hold the line against the currs who dare to steal their kind.

Development: The Rat Tribe has some experience building things, but their most recent project, the mill, has illuminated just how much there is to learn about the process. The Rats research Engineering in order to be able to make more efficient and complex creations in the future
Action 1: Using their new knowledge, bridges are now a breeze to design. No longer will boats be the only avenue across the river. In fact, the Rats finally build a great road connecting all three of their settlements, from Nezuyama to Nezugawa, all the way to Kurizumi. The Rat people will be able to travel easily between them all
Action 2: Ni takes a break from dealing with the Raccoons for a while, and decides that it's time to meet that other tribe his brother had told him about, to the West. He hitches a ride with his brother on his great owl, with the intention of making an impressive entrance. He brings plenty of the finest quality cider as a gift, hoping to make a good impression. It's likely that they'll speak a different language, and communication won't quite be possible, but this instance of first contact will surely dictate their relationship from now on, even before they get the chance to explain themselves

Once Racoons have sorted out their own affairs & are stable & reliable, sheep will be willing to take part in trade.

Sheep will however do what they can to help expose the horrendous plot that lead to the dead trade lord. Sheep feel bad as whoever did it used them as a part of the plan making sheep feel a little responsible, plus the current trade lord lost his mother, which is very sad. Sheep will use their massive brains to help! To start with Sheep will need to know about any enemies she had within the clan & the history there/what those enemies are like.

SHEEP!
The Raccoons are dismayed that they cannot continue talks with the Sheep at this time. They are grateful for the offer of assistance to get to the bottom of things with the Trade Lord, however they feel it is best that the matter involves Raccoons, so that Sheep are not perceived as meddling in the affairs of the other tribe. How would that look! The young Trade Lord apologizes, it's nothing personal. "Just between us, I'm pretty sure it was my uncle anyway," he confides in the Sheep leadership. He says he'll just have to watch his back! After he leaves, the Sheep get down to business, setting an elaborate trap for the bears they found earlier. The scent of honey draws them in, and this close to the end of summer you know bears are going to be enjoying every tasty snack they can. The Sheep pounce! They manage to capture the bear alive, and her three cubs, bringing them back to the Sheep settlement while only suffering mild injuries. They study the bears, starting to tame them, but the bears can't live on honey forever! They need food, and before they can domesticate or train the bears, the Sheep will have to figure that out.

Travelling back down south to where the scouts were lost before, the Baargonaut comes bearing a full squad of Sheep ready to hunt. Leaving only a few with the ship that pulls away from the shore for safety, they build a tower to get a better view of the surroundings. For miles and miles in every direction they see nothing but sparse scrub, desert flats, and ...is that a river? There seems to be a river just slightly south of where the Sheep landed. Regrouping to camp for the night, the Sheep light a fire and leave two lookouts up in the makeshift tower. In the darkness, some of the Sheep are awoken by the sound of a scuffle - but they see nothing. Climbing the tower, they find the lookouts gone! Climbing back down, they find the rest of their scouting crew blindfolded and bound, while creatures wearing tattered white linens hold them in place around the fire.

The creatures have long, spiked tails, and long, hooked claws. Their language is coarse, dry and full of hisses and clicks! It looks like they are wearing skulls as masks, with carvings in the bone exposing the scaly skin beneath. Enormous frills ripple on either side of their faces behind the masks - truly, these are monsters! The strangers manage to capture the remaining two Sheep. Blindfolded, they are lifted and carried, the cool desert night passing by as they are dumped into a caravan that creakily wheels toward the river. When the creaking and bumping stops, the Sheep are dumped into a dirt pen, and the blindfolds come off. Bleached-white wood forms a fence around the pen, rough-hewn, as if it was hastily constructed. The Sheep find the missing sailors, and reunite with them happily.
>>
>>2181036
SHEEP (II)
The missing scouts inform the newcomers that the lizard-folk haven't hurt them, so that's something. They say they seem almost afraid of the Sheep! They have been offered ceramic bowls of grubs, larva and tough plant roots to eat, with only the latter being edible. They only receive roots now, so it's clear that the lizard-folk are watching. They sleep during the heat of the day, hiding inside their adobe huts after covering the sheep's pen with the same rough-spun burlap linen to protect them from the sun. The Sheep don't know what the neck frills are, but when the lizard-folk argue or haggle, the frills flare up on either side of their face and their hissing gets more intense!

One of the Sheep has the bright idea of trying to talk to the lizard-folk as they pass by, during the evening and night time when they are most active. None of the lizard-folk respond, but one big, round lizard approaches one evening, holding a bowl of water. Tapping his hooked claws into it, he dabs it on his bare face, then flicks droplets of it onto the Sheep, and pours the rest out onto the ground. He holds up various things that the Sheep had confiscated - their spyglasses (he looks into the wrong end), their shortbows (he tries to play it like an instrument), and their bronze, that he twists and turns to examine in the torchlight. He seems to pass some judgement, and points at a random Sheep. The Sheep is dragged from the enclosure, bleating, and is not seen again by the Sheep in the pen.

Blindfolded and brought back to the shore, the single Sheep is found by the sailors the next morning to return to his kind.

RATS!
Taking their advanced carpentry and masonry experience and applying it in a new way, Rats develop the idea of engineering - crafting things in such a way to account for use, wear and tear, and specific issues related to their construction. This enables them to build beautiful arching bridges out of stone, and roads that connect their townships. The roads make travel easier, boosting pop growth as the population wanders and finds new adventure and new romance! (+1). Meanwhile, far from any roads, Ni and Ichi head west to the lonely mountain with kegs of cider. Making sure to telegraph their arrival, the Rats dismount to find a cadre of Penguins waiting for them, their formation bristling as they hold their icestone halberds at the ready should the Princes make any threatening moves. They are clearly impressed by the Owl, and hesitate before advancing. When Ni makes it clear they come in peace, two of the Penguins honk off to the village, coming back with a Penguin who wears a thick cord around his neck laden with several pearls. The Penguin's fluffy yellow eye tufts raise as he regards the Owl and the Princes, before honking a signal that causes the guards to stand down. These are no Dogs, clearly. Sending another Penguin hobbling off, the one in charge waits for them to return before taking the two leather thongs - each with a single, small pearl - and handing them to the strangers. Relations have begun peacefully!

DOGS!
Dogs, who have never done anything more complicated than stack some rocks on top of one another, decide to try their hand at making seige machines. Surprisingly, the result isn't terrible, and they now have the means and ability to create basic catapults. They craft a few of those in the fortress to prepare themselves for coming battles with the Penguins and Otters. They also spend this time improving the infrastructure of their settlements, making the quality of life better and helping distract them from their recent losses. Their morale doesn't improve due to the looming threat of more war, but their pop growth increases by +1. Buying time is doing them good, and the Otter pleasure house has never been busier. Dirt roads are pounded into the ground by Otter slaves, making the Dog territory resemble civilization, but only if you squint.

>>2181042
DOGS (II)
Finally, someone finally takes my advice and puts the icestone on the altar. The result is instantaneous, the bones rattling and shaking loose, rising up into the air in the fascimile of the long-toothed skull that had been left to rest on the altar you found in the wild. Several Dogs and Otters nearby begin bleeding from their noses and ears, and the weaker ones pass out. Everyone stops, turns, and stares, unable to look away from the grisly spectacle as that voice booms out, echoing against the mountain behind the altar.

"HERESY!" she screams, causing the earth to rumble and crack beneath the altar, one side rising several inches higher than the other, "SHE LIVES!" The rage of the being speaking through the altar is palpable, and if Dogs were advanced enough to wear pants they'd be wetting them. "I SENSE MY SISTERS TOUCH - WHERE DID YOU FIND THIS?!" The young Dog is hauled bodily into the air by an unseen force, his voice quailing an answer. "THIS MUST NOT STAND. SHE MUST BE DESTROYED. DO YOU HEAR ME?" The voice compels the Dogs, held rapt by the wavering in the air that shimmers behind the bones, as though something is there, just behind the bones and skulls, trying to push through.

"HER MAGIC WAS NEVER ANY MATCH FOR MINE. BRING ME MORE OF THIS - ALL OF IT - AND LET IT BURN IN MY WRATH. HER ENCHANTMENT IS PATHETIC! YOUR SACRIFICES HAVE GIVEN ME ENOUGH STRENGTH, LET ME DO THIS FOR YOU, BUT YOU MUST DESTROY HER! HER NAME, HER ALTAR, HER PEOPLE, ALL MUST PERISH WHO BOW BEFORE HER. THEY ALL MUST!" The tangible anger radiating from the shrine seems to pass somewhat, and the young Dog is placed back on the ground. "REACH FORTH, CLAIM MY GIFT," her deep voice booms. When the pellet is taken back, it shimmers red, though it is no different to the touch than metal. "ONE TOUCH, AND THIS WILL TURN HER GIFTS TO CURSES! NOW SWEAR TO ME, SWEAR YOU WILL ERASE THAT MISERABLE WITCH FROM THE FACE OF THE EARTH!"

>Swear
>Die
>Cross your fingers and hope for the best

The pellet is tested by touching it to another icestone pellet - it instantly turns red as well. Soon, the Dogs have a good cache of the redstone. They wonder just what effect this will have on the armor of the Penguins and their bears - or, for that matter, their weapons.

Action 1: San's thoughts come back to the strange artifact, and how they couldn't discern its purpose. This has been bothering him for quite a while, and he decides to get to the bottom of it no matter what. Making sure to draw out diagrams of the process, he takes the artifact apart as carefully as he can. When he's separated it into all of its components, he tries to put it back together, with the help of the diagrams he made. At the end of this process, he should have an idea of how the object works
Action 2: One fine late summer day, the Highest Rat is taking a leisurely walk around his Palace. He steps out of a doorway to find himself in a place he's scarcely bothered to visit, the Shrine around which the Palace is built. He walks up and examines it, taking it all in. It's because of the favor of this shrine that his family has been proven divine, and it is likely because of that, that he and his sons have managed to make his people prosper. His people may owe the unbridled happiness that they enjoy to this shrine. He recalls that it was Ichi's offering of an apple slice that compelled the Spirit in the shrine to give its favor. He comes to think that as the boy's father, it should have been up to him to give reverence to this shrine, yet he has merely been enjoying himself with no concern for it. He thinks to remedy this, in the only way he knows how, with a feast. He orders his chefs to fix a meal of all their finest goods, enough to serve a dozen Rats or more. He has the feast set out in front of the shrine, then pours a cup of cider and places it directly in the center of the altar. He pours his own cup, then clinks it against the other one in a toast. "I have ignored you for some time, great Spirit." he says. "Please accept my humblest apologies. I am truly grateful for the service you have done for my family, and my people. I offer you both this feast and my heartfelt thanks."

SHEEP!
The wisest Sheep from the university gather to study the Baargonaut, hoping to discern things about it. They learn about expert craftsmanship for boating, but they can discern no logical or tangible quality about the ship that would come down to 'magic'. They board the ship with some worker Sheep to turn it around to study its navigational properties, and it doesn't seem to react. Maybe because they aren't going anywhere? They learn that magic is a bit more complicated than the science they understand! And they can build replicas of the Baargonaut now, though they will be mundane ships and not possess any preternatural boons. Sheep learn that bears like honey, berries and tuber root vegetables to gnaw on. They also learn that the bears will need a supply of meat or fish or they will start to get sick, and figure out a basic way of getting enough fish to supply their livestock so their bears don't literally eat them for snacks. The bears are now tame and can be trained for battle, hauling things or riding next turn. Lastly Sheep improve the security of their mountain settlement with sealing stone doors. This improves security among the Herd, and with the appointment of new leadership the Sheep hope that whatever troubles they had will soon be over. However, Sheep in the mines in the mountain find ....hollows in the rock? Where they expect to find ore and gems, the stone chips away to expose empty space instead, and they are clearly baffled by this development. Sheep will not be able to produce any additional copper, tin or bronze until they find a new source of the ores, or figure out what happened to their mineshafts.

RATS!
Prince Ni learns the Penguin language, a series of honks, quacks and throaty sounds that is a little hard for him to master at first, but he manages in the end. The Penguins are impressed at this outsider toiling so thoroughly to communicate - they inform the Prince that outsiders have only attacked them before. They express willingness to cooperate with the Rats, curious about what they have to offer, and curious about that Great Owl. It seems she goes quite a long way with strangers. Meanwhile, Prince San takes apart the mysterious artifact, finding that the band itself is simple, while the face is curiously well constructed. He finally manages to get it open, pulling out a series of needles, setting them down. The needles stick together! Curious. There isn't much more to the device that San can make out, so he carefully reassembles it, though the face is slightly chipped. The device seems to work mostly the same as before, with random bouts of random spinning for the hands. It seems to be some kind of navigational device! But the different needles point different directions. Following one on a whim, San discovers that it leads to the shrine in the courtyard where his father has set an elaborate feast. The Highest Rat loves food, and he loves the smell of food, and by his girth it's easy to see he loves the taste of food! So for him to offer a banquet in this fashion is a fitting sacrifice, worthy of the spirit within. When he places the cup of cider in the hollow of the altar, the wind rustles through the leaves of the tree, then changes direction suddenly. The food on the tables withers and rots away, flies and maggots crawling across the offerings until nothing is left but piles of ash and refuse - and the cup of cider. When the spirit gets to the cider, it seems to calm. This, made from the fruit of her trees, is also the product of rot and decay - the perfect balance.

The wind picks up, blowing yellow and orange leaves from the tree as the spirit gains power, forming the fascimile of a face that speaks to the Highest Rat. "Forgive my poor manners, great Rat," she says, one of the leaves drifting forward, cupping the rodent's plump cheek, "Your sacrifice is worthy, and my strength bolsters. Child of the river, you have done much to ensure the peacefulness of these lands, tending them as once I did. Know that I watch over you - your family, your people. What strength I have is yours to call upon should you need it. I once brought balance to my sisters - and I fear the time is coming that they will need me once again. Thank you for giving me the strength to hang on a little longer..." And with that, the leaves blow away, the foliage of the shrine shimmering as it fades from light yellow-green to a rich orangey russet red. A sign of the season, or perhaps of something else.

DOGS!
Noticing that they keep getting got, Dogs decide that some upgrades are in order for their armor. They include extra pieces for more protection, making the Dogs more secure, even if it's harder to maneuver. To test out their new armor and their new redstone, a new cadre of Dogs rides north, waiting for a Penguin patrol. Ambushing them, the Dogs have a great advantage - and when they use some of their redstone pellets, that advantage quickly multiplies. The moment the redstone comes into contact with the icestone armor of the Penguins, the birds begin to honk and quack in pain, blood dripping from their eyes and beaks. This weakens them, but the Penguins not affected manage to ride upon the Dogs, engaging with them. In the end, all 15 of the Penguins and their bears lay dead or dying, and only 7 Dogs perished. Dogs can call this a win, kind of? They also acquire more icestone, stripping the pellets, weapons and armor from the bodies to take back, summarily increasing their store of redstone.

Speaking of, Dogs decide to get to the bottom of all of this business with shrines and magic, and haul 3 Otters up onto the altar, sacrificing them in the slowest, most gruelling way possible. Their call is answered, though not by any flashy display of floating bones and fainting people. A voice speaks as the blood from the dying Otters drips upward, staining the air red. "You wish to know my family," she says, sounding much less livid than her last appearance. You can almost make out the timbre of the woman's voice beneath the pain. "It has been so long... We were born from this land, my sisters and I. Through the fields and forests we would roam, each nurturing the balance, tending to our own interests. Ten of us were free and weaving our great works - and then came the strangers."

The shrine shudders slightly. "They were not of this place, yet they were so curious. We entertained them for a while, granting them our gifts, for we found that they could make us stronger. The taste of power drove some of my sisters to madness, paranoia, wanting only more. To rule, to ascend. The whispers of the strangers only drove us apart, to the far corners of this land, and in the end I realized their true purpose. Isolated, my sisters and I were weaker - the strangers took our gifts and blessings, and used them to fashion prisons for each of us. No longer can we wander, no longer can we restore our might the way we once did. They left us to our fates, withering, twisting in the wind."
>>
>>2183838
DOGS! (II)
"I've felt my sisters flicker and die deep beneath the earth, in the heart of this land... But even still, the battle wages onward for some of my sisters. My sister who worked her magic on the stone you offered me, she must be mighty indeed to so freely offer her gifts. And I have no doubt she would see me snuffed out, and the rest of my sisters, until only her frigid grasp is free to claim this land for herself. Be wary of her - she is the hoarfrost, the dark waters, the touch of winter. Her obsession with tyranny was set in motion long ago. We have lost so much... but I am afraid the cold madness of her spirit cannot be broken as easily as my fury."

With that, the last of the Otter lifeblood seeps from their veins, and the presence lingers for a few more moments as if wistfully... then fades away.

Development) Rats have long been proud of their slingers, but a thoughtful rat muses the problem – what if someone else has slings to throw stones back at the rats? Or worse – we have seen the bows of the Racoons in use, and the mercantile nature of the Racoon is well known. Any weapon that can be used is one a foe could use. He therefore devises a flat wooden structure that can be sheltered behind, bound together with leather wrap, and which a rat can hold with a single hand leaving his other free. Rats have invented the shield.

Action 1) With Ni's work at learning the Penguin language going well, Ichi returns upon his Owl at the head of a column of warriors. Their mission, though, is peaceable; the Rats are guarding a sizeable selection of Ratty trade-wares they've bought with them to see what the Penguin tribe might wish to trade and barter for.

Action 2) The Highest Rat strokes his chin, and muses. Cider pleased the spirit the most out of all Rat bounty. He therefore decrees that each day the sun rises the monks are to hold a ceremony and repeat this act of offering to the spirit, and that this might bring the spirit the strength and balance it seeks.

Action
since the red stone only has to touch the penguin's armor or flesh, more archers are trained that are not on moose back as to increase accuracy. also, it is now standard for archers to carry a second quiver with all arrows tipped with Redstone now when they in counter penguins. even if they don't penetrate they will still be poisoned by its mere touch.

Action
with a real victory against the Penguins under there belt the dog tribe decides to step up the patrol ambushes against the Penguins. continues patrol ambushes are planned for the coming days and nights. with the sole goal to drain the penguin forces. in each raid group, the lead dog will ride a white moose. with each kill dedicated to our goddess.

Development
since the penguins are very good in close quarters combat the obvious answer is to not fight in hand to hand combat. which is why the smart boys are looking into ways of improving our current ranged weapons. one of their ideas is to make moose draw arrow thrower. this machine, in theory, will shoot lots of arrows very quickly and be reloaded just as quickly.

SHEEP!
With nothing to do but listen, Sheep begin to pick up on bits of the Lizard language. It's difficult to understand without context, but one of the small Lizard children has tried to reach out, coming to the fence of their 'quarantine' to speak with the fluffy ones. Obsesed with the soft feeling and mystery of the white fleece, the Lizard child teaches them enough to start learning how the Lizard-folk haggle, how they speak in likelihoods to prevent committing to things, and how they view the Sheep with a wary curiosity. Deciding to speak with one of the Lizard guards who brings their tubers and water for the day, the Sheep seems to startle the reptilian, who dashes off. Perhaps they think the Sheep are scary in some way?

Meanwhile, Sheep gather the results of some of their brightest voyages into the unknown of science and discovery, laying blueprints and schematics and data on the seastone altar. The hollow in the smooth stone seems to hum with the offerings, and that familiar voice makes itself known. "What guidance is it you seek?" she asks - and when asked about the troubles with the mine, her voice grows thoughtful. The Sheep can almost sense her awareness stretching out, her eyes travelling as far as they have travelled, scions of her will. "It is the doing of one of my sisters," she says, while in the mines, Sheep pick frantically at the mines and former ore veins only to discover there are more blank spacess where they had been before. Morale suffers slightly, but only because the Sheep sense the interference of some power they don't understand. "There must be more among you who have discovered my sisters and I - find them, and ask for her favor to be returned to you." There seems to be the implication that one of the other tribes has discovered a shrine and activated its power to steal the metal, though Sheep worry about what else such a power could bring.

Investigating the mineshaft, Sheep find no obvious entry or exit points for whatever was 'taken' out of the mountain itself. Perhaps the Raccoons are right, and the mountain has been bled dry... But it seems that there was supposed to be veins of ore where now there is void. Digging further, the Sheep discover that they have dug into one of the Raccoon iron mines! ...Sans iron. Perhaps this is how Raccoons have gotten in and out of the mountain settlements, from below, not through the front door! And perhaps they had already mined the metals, and yet... It still seems somehow unlikely.

RATS!
Concerned about the possibility of advanced projectile combat, Rats devise shields with wooden frames and leather barding, giving them an edge in defending themselves. Prince Ni deals with the Penguins in the meantime, and the birds express an interest in the Rats' medicinal advancements, dye and iron. It seems the Penguins have plenty of other metals to trade, but most of it was flimsy until they earned the blessing of icestone. Penguins are unwilling to trade icestone objects, but they possess gold, shellfish, naval advancements and wine for transactions. Responding to the trade deal is a free action next turn. The Highest Rat meanwhile decides that offerings to the tree shrine are to become a regular occurance, and offerings of cider seem to cause the tree of the shrine to grow bigger each day. The seventh day, the monk finds the altar for the offering covered in flowers of many colors, their petals rich in hue, one last bloom before the harvest season begins. Rat morale drops slightly, but is still steady.

DOGS!
Deciding that they aren't deadly enough, the Dogs who have spent most of their recent time dying to Penguins have worked out a moose mounted ballista, that shoots bolts of wood that are three inches thick on average. Tipping those and their extant armor and weapons with redstone, the Dogs beat the drums of war as they gather their forces. Riding upon the next few series of patrolmen, Dogs wait until the birds are all in sight - then surround and harvest the icestone of the deceased birds. This works great for the first two ambushes, but the third patrol is enormous, nearly 30 Penguins riding due to the expected attack.

The Dogs make the mistake of launching an attack at the first sign of the Penguins, giving Penguins in the back the advantage of preparation while the front lines deal with the attacks. Losing the element of surprise allows the birds to form up and organize. The redstone spreads and spreads, but Penguins have had enough time to prepare for this it seems. Their formations break apart, each a part of a smaller group of fighters as they work to draw in the riders, until the battle comes down to one on one.

Pelting Dogs with their weapons and pellets, the Penguins don't realize that they only add to the potential of the canine forces. They figure it out fairly quickly however, and Dogs notice that the Penguins stop using their slings and turn their halberds around, smacking Dogs with the butt of the shaft to beat them back and gain distance. After all is said and done, 12 Penguins perished in the skirmish, while 22 Dogs succumbed to their wounds. While Dogs pull back, losing one White Moose, the remaining Penguins have samples of redstone and knowledge of its existence for the next attack.

Trade) Prince Ni agrees to trade knowledge of Rat medicinal advances for the Penguin's naval knowledge, it sounds like this will help both tribes! He also agrees to trade rat dyes for some that Penguin gold... though these flimsy metal the Penguins mentioned (and seem to have no use for) intrigue him. Do they have any samples of these he can see?

Development) Rats by the river have often seen the silvery shapes of fish in their waters, but have only ever managed to catch a few in the glut of spawning season. A rat cook working at the waterside thinks perhaps they could be strained from the river, somehow? His first attempt uses a lattice of woven noodles and fails quite badly, but after a re-think and visit to the sling-maker the pair come up with a lattice of leather strips, which hold together much better in the river. The rats invent a sort of fishing net!

Action 1) With the Trade mission mostly concluded, Prince Ichi sets off again, this time heading north-east from the black palace to scout new areas of coastline. There are nearly 300 rats around and things are starting to get a little crowded, hopefully he can find a nice new site for a new rat town. With new knowledge of fishing nets and new naval technologies recently acquired by his brother, he is sure he can find a great site to allow for the both of these to reap the bounties of the sea.

Action 2) The highest rat and his sons have always had the space to see Noh theatre, but for the common rat the hope of an invitation had been barely plausible. Wanting to allow all his people to see the wonders of the theatre (whilst also not wanting their dirty feet traipsing through his black palace) the Highest Rat commissions a grand new building of stone and wood at the center of Nezugawa to hold the Noh theatre, a place for common Rats to assemble in the dry and warmth whilst they enjoy the dramatic productions and a good meal.

Cultural Bonus) With a new Noh theater, a grand festival is organised to celebrate the opening and the turning of the season. With a thin paper shell and a small suspended flame lit by dishes full of animal fat, these sky lanterns can bring new light to the Rats even as the seasons of dark start to encroach again, and carry their hopes and prayers off to the spirits.

Dogkind continues to wage war even though the consequences often breed nothing but misery. However, when a person is called to defend his country, or protect other defenseless people, it is his duty to fight. There is no question that there is evil in the world and we must not rest on our laurels and say it is none of our business. We cannot stand by and watch while others are being persecuted. It is the duty of Dogkind to uphold justice."

Realizing that the easiest way to feed their bears is with fish, Sheep develop nets using wool and other fibers. The fish also doubles as fertilizer since Sheep can't eat it themselves, granting +2 pop bonus. Sheep in the University meanwhile analyze the basics of linguistics now that they know multiple languages, dissecting the basics of communication in Sheep and Raccoon. Sheep will be able to use an action to learn any languages from here on out! Meanwhile, Sheep build quicklime traps using their advanced intellects, setting them deep in the mines where their own folk dare not tread. Late at night, the sound of them going off can be heard echoing through the mountain - the traps barely didn't start a collapse, but manage to make swift work of whoever was attempting to infiltrate their colony. The mineshaft is sealed off using one of the heavy stones, which will keep out any more unwanted visitors. It's not like there was any ore down there anyway. Finally, Sheep approach the storm shrine, asking advice about freeing the spirits. The spirit of the shrine gathers her strength and informs the Sheep that she doesn't know how to free herself or her sisters - she would've done it by now, wouldn't she? She says she remembers the strangers leading her to the altar before something pulled her in, something she couldn't resist. As for her sisters, she doesn't know where they are - she feels traces of them in the wind. Should the Sheep come across their altars, she will know it immediately, but has yet to feel their presence through the wool-folk. She says she hears a familiar song to the west, though... Finally, Sheep prepare for the harvest by crafting goblets out of hollowed horns, that also serve as instruments. Blowing into the horns causes a rich trumpeting sound that celebrates the turning of the seasons! The crops of the Herd ripen and grant a +3 pop boost for the next 3 turns.

RATS!
Dealing with Penguins, Rats gain naval knowledge to construct good quality boats, improving their current tech level, and trade dye for gold. They also research fishing using nets, gaining a +2 pop boost due to the prevalence of fish in their rivers and lake. Prince Ichi mounts his Great Owl, setting off to look for a good place for a naval settlement, and finds a quiet cove where the forest meets the sea. The shoreline is level and nearby are several small freshwater springs. Ichi finds deer nearby for future hunting. The Highest Rat also tries to make theatre more accessible, crafting a theatre of stone and wood inlaid with gold for the common folk to visit. This increases mood, putting Rats back up into joyous! Damnit, Rats! To commemorate the opening, they create paper lanterns and send them drifting to the sky. Some Penguins inform Prince Ni that their people have been attacked again, and suggest that the Rats take their leave before things heat up. They would never presume to ask for outside military aid, but if the Rats had any interest in helping the Penguins, the birds honk that they will be sure to make it worth their while. They explain that the Dogs have been raidingg one of their smaller mining settlements, and have been ramping up their attacks. They claim that the Dogs possess some dark magic that has them concerned!

DOGS!
Tired of losing, Dogs decide it's because they don't have ranks and titles. They make up ranks and titles, though what those are and how they work seems nebulous. The Dog fighting forces are chaotic and each commander attempts to instill their own semblance of discipline, often conflicting with each other. It seems that the Dog tribe is suffering from internal friction due to all of the external pressure being applied - and it's not a great look on them. Apparently a Dog named Wilhelm does the screening, which I assume means he gives a lot of Dog physicals or something? It's not just his nose that gets stuck up the other Dog's tails, presumably. Wilhelm takes command of a force of moose lancers, using particularly long spears to train for mounted combat. Dogs have the Otters prospect and find lead and silver. They use some of the silver to craft the statue they make to commemorate the harvest, paying respect to their dead and hoping to inspire young Dogs in the ways of war. Dog scouts riding in Penguin territory report that the routine of Penguin patrols has changed, making them more difficult to ambush as they had been doing. 6 Dog scouts do not return at all. Dogs in charge of the Otter slaves report that they have begun to sing while they work, and attempts made at stopping them have proven troublesome. The Dogs have more or less decided that it isn't an issue so long as the work gets done. The crops in the Dog settlements have begun to yield increased fruit for the harvest season, granting a +3 pop bonus for the next 3 turns.

SHEEP! (II)
The Sheep with the Lizards try to make contact again, and this time the fat Lizard from before steps forward to speak with them. He explains that he is stunned that they managed to pick up their dialect, and has been impressed by the level of advancement the Sheep have demonstrated. He apologizes for the inconvenience of holding the Sheep hostage, but explains that the Lizard-folk are extremely wary of outsiders, as they have been attacked many times through the years. Their people has a long history in this land, and once roamed far and wide over the island, though now they largely stay in their deserts where they are most comfortable. The Lizard chieftain explains that they cannot let the Sheep go, for they cannot allow outsiders to know where they are - and in fact, they will be moving their encampment very soon. Letting the single Sheep go was an act of goodwill, he explains, letting the rest of the Herd know that their people are being cared for. He tells the captive Sheep that they are part of his tribe now, and must wander with them through the desert to their next camp, as they move routinely to different watering holes and oases scattered through the dry lands. Any Sheep who agrees will gain equal protection and become part of the tribe officially, while those who refuse will continue to be held captive and be cared for while being restricted.

-Development: Animal Husbandry (Deer). With our new discovery of Deer, The Rat Clan has taken an immediate interest in domesticating them, as they’re the largest animal they’ve yet to see in the region, and would make a good meat source compared to the poultry they’ve already domesticated.

-Action 1: The Rat Clan sets up a new settlement at the Deer Inhabited Cove that Ichi recently found. It’s been decided that this area would be a fine location to both set up The Clan’s Deer Domestication Project, and act as a springboard into Naval Constructions, due to its closeness to both The Sea, and The Forest. This settlement will be named Shikaminato.

-Action 2: The Clan has come to ponder over The Penguins and their dilemma for a moment, and decided that they may have a solution that could prove beneficial to both societies. Research : steam power

Action 1: sheep don't know how to free the shrines yet, but clearly the shrine is a prison. Sheep are unsure whether to break it or not and decide against the risk but want the trapped spirit to be able to do stuff and help.
Sheep use their greatest minds and artisans to construct a steam powered bronze golem/automaton. They offer many shells to the shrine to power her up and then insert her into the suit. The shrine has been able to do amazing things with her magic so sheep reason that heating water and moving parts should be relatively easy. If it orks this eill be a great step forward for the shrine, the sheep, their quest and their engineering abilities. If it doesn't work we can simply return to the drawing board as it won't kill her.

Action 2: captive sheep try to convince the lizards to send an envoy to sheep with some of the prisoners and explain themselves . Sheep are reasonable, love meeting new races and will understand. The previous returned sheep plus live captives demonstrate no hostile intent, and if things go wrong the lizards will lose at most a handful of men. Sheep will use the information from the released sheep plus they'd techniques to find lizards soon so it's best to take the initiative.

SHEEP!
Some of the academic Sheep have a brilliant breakthrough. Heating water produces steam, which rises and expands - and more importantly exerts force. Sheep can think of so many uses for this application, an automated power source so long as heat and water can be combined! Sheep invent steam power, but they are the furthest thing from punk and don't have any tacky gears sewn onto their wool, so we dodge a bullet there. However, they also decide that they would like to craft an automaton that uses steam power to move in order for the shrine and the spirit within to become mobile. The shrine spirit is confused but flattered, and responds with positive curiosity while Sheep artisans take measurements and attempt to craft a device. While they are unable to use metal, wood and stone is used instead, causing many problems that become apparent right away. The shrine is large and dense, weighing quite a bit, and though there is some headway made on the automaton, until better materials are procured they are not in possession of anything strong enough to physically lift the altar. The first several prototypes fail, though they succeed in unsettling the spirit, causing the clouds overhead to darken ominously. No lightning is discharged, but the spirit would prefer to be handled more gently in the future, thank you. Down south, several Sheep defect to the Lizard tribe, deciding that there is little hope for returning home. This causes quite a bit of upset for the remaining loyalist Sheep, who beg and bleat for the Lizards to send an envoy. Lizards will not hear of such things, and are busy packing up their settlement to move, while the 16 Lizard-Sheep learn their ways. The Lizards explain that they understand that Sheep don't pose a threat, but the less anyone knows how to find them, the less danger they are in. The Lizards pack up their camp and move into the desert, away from their known position. The main Sheep Herd has no idea where to find the Lizard tribe any longer.

RATS!
Settling down by the sea, Rats found the shore colony of Shikaminato. The presence of the ocean is soothing, inspiring many Rats with dreams of using their new naval tech, and others to tame the nearby deer. Domesticating the skittish herbivores, they find that deer are useful as scouts, able to sense danger before even the sensitive Rats. Finally, they approach the Penguins with interest in mining the lonely mountain as well as establishing a military outpost to bolster the birds' defenses. The Penguin leader asks for three days to consider the matter - this is above and beyond his jurisdiction, you see. After sending word to the larger Penguin capital, he must receive word back, because he graciously sends word to invite Rats to mine what they can from the north face of the mountain in exchange for their support in this matter. While Rats are setting up, they discover the small camp of Dog slaves, who each sport a leather thong around their neck with a large black pearl. The Penguins they see interacting with the captive Dogs are perfunctory rather than cruel, though the discipline shown by the birds seems to take a moment to register with the furry creatures. The Penguins explain to the Rats that the Dogs have been saved from their formerly formless life, and given purpose by their culture. Everyone Has Their Place. And Rats' is on the north face of the mountain, move along, there's nothing to see here. Penguins tell the Rats that they anticipate Dog attacks shortly, and they ask the Rats to prepare to mobilize should the need arise.

The Penguins say that Rats can expect to find gold, sapphires and lead in the mountains.

DOGS!
Realizing that boiling water is somehow cleaner than filthy muck water, Dogs learn to sterilize things like wounds and medicinal implements, granting them a pop boost of +1. This also improves the effectiveness of their medication, allowing them to salvage more wounded from the field of battle rather than carting them off to the mass grave. Taking one step forward, Dogs also are required to take one step back, building a wall around their slave village and issuing ID cards of engraved copper for the slaves to keep track of their numbers. This has mixed results, due to Otters frequently trading cards in order to allow more rations for those who need them most, and they share readily inside the confines of their village when the Dogs aren't looking. The singing in the mines and in the fields gets louder, causing the spirit of the captive people to rise slightly. Not that you can see their morale, but. At night, their voices can be heard around the fire in the center of their shanty village. Dogs also improve their buildings using new forms of stone and metal, increasing the security of their settlements and providing better insulation against the coming cold season. Dog scouts report seeing no Penguin patrols at all, and are uncertain whether this is a good sign or a bad sign. Dogs have been deleted from the quest.

Action: this otter problem is getting our of hand. We start issuing beatings to them for speaking otter at any point, and institute a sundown curfew, in addition to this, dogs replace the otter housing with individual cells and a large house to fit them all in, placing family less otters alone in a small cell, big enough to fit barely a bed and a bucket, Dogs also take time to actually recognize the characteristics of individual otters and keep heavy watch on suspected trouble makers (read: food redistributors.), while rewarding otters that take extra care to learn the dog language, or report potential troublemakers with better rations, allowance of personal effects in the cells, om rare cases family sized cells, etc. Any otter singing songs in otter or songs in dog that slur the dogs in any way will tortured in the shrine.
Development:
because of the summer of blood in which many dogs died and even more where injured. they were left to heal on there own except some did not and became crippled one these dogs determined this would never happen again and began studying the ways of medicine. this dog has had a breakthrough after many hours of research and study he has perfected surgery. he says that this breakthrough will save countless lives and that no one else will be left broken and alone.

Development) One of the rats watching and domesticating the deer herds gradually notices something interesting – deer quite often seem to take after their parents, with small deer often giving birth to deer that stay smaller and larger deer quite often having larger children. Perhaps the qualities of young deer can be influenced by choosing which parent deer to breed together? He starts to test out this idea of selective breeding.

Action 1) Prince Ichi returns to the mountain with a number of Rat Warriors, to fulfill the rat tribe's part of this deal with the Penguins and set up a small military camp at the mountain's north face. Rats join in with the Penguins and Ichi leads them at practice and in drills to learn from the Penguin ways of war.

Action 2) Prince San has been pawing through the rat paperwork and has noticed what he thinks is a trend – The Raccoons seemed to expect metal finds would be likely at their mountain range, and the Penguins mine metal at the base of their mountain. Perhaps metal tends to be distributed along mountain basins? Perhaps other rocky outcrops would have exposed veins of metal on their flanks? Taking a small team of Robineer scouts, a pair of monks to record his findings and a couple of ninja, he plans to head from Nezuyama to Shikaminato along a route just north of the edge of Racoon's mountain range, and search for metal along the base of what seems to be a Plateau separate from the mountains north of Raccoon territory, what he believes to be unclaimed land.
