Viserys Quest: Beneath the Gold the Bitter Steel

Unfortunately, you do not actually have a kingdom, let alone seven of them. A month ago you at least had your mother’s crown, a last memento of a beloved woman that died giving birth to your sister. You sold it in Pentos for a fair amount of coin. The disgrace and humiliation of having to give up final remaining connection to your true position in life shattered your mind and turned you mad. A thousand voices now scream with a thousand different tunes at once through your head, a better fate than anger and bitterness, at least they all scream with a common cause.

Then you sailed to Myr and used most of the money to start a Free Company under your own name. The “Sunset Striders” number two hundred men, each paid two months in advance and promised a knighthood upon your, eventual, ascension. A hundred spearmen, and a hundred crossbowmen. Hardly an army, but it’s a start. A fair Free Company at the very least.
Now only the matter of employment remains at hand. The city is teeming with mercenaries, at least fifteen thousand men camped outside the city’s walls, all prepared to spill blood for coin in the fledgling war against Tyrosh.

Apparently, after conversation with some of your more experienced officers, the way mercenaries find work in the disputed lands is to be hired on a specific objective basis by individuals Magisters as, for the most part, the entire purpose of the war is to ensure the wellbeing of their economic investments.

Luckily for your, a contact that you made on your naval passage to Myr has a friend amongst them and sent a word in your favor. You followed up on this word with a massage of your own, delivered by one of your newly hired servants, and arranged a meeting with the man at his mansion for today.

You have your tunic cleaned and straightened out, pin your sword, brush your hair and make your way through the city towards the wealthiest part of town where the Magisters reside.

Once you arrive a slave-servant dressed in yellow silk awaits you in front of the mansion and leads you through the vast garden, filled with various exotic trees, flowers, and bushes cut into shapes of men and women in a great many poses, some of them martial, some mundane, and others erotic, until you find yourself in an area with small artificial lake that hosts several floating doves, and front of which stands an ornate Cyvasse table with a finely and colourfully dressed, very tall man sitting behind it.

“Lord Viserys” He calls out in only a slightly accented Common Tongue of Westeros “please, sit”. He beckons to the empty chair opposite the table of him.

“Magister” You nod in reply and proceed to sit down on the chair (though it resembles a throne more than and ordinary chair) carved out of bone white wood with red streaks running through it. The man’s chair, and the Cyvasse board are made of the same material as well, while the table is from dark Ebony. The Cyvasse figures are made from what you identify as ivory, and dragonbone per each of the sides respectively.

“The Lady Maegyr says that you are quite the player, care to join me for one?”
You don’t protest, feeling that you are in no position to refuse the request.
“She also said” he continues softly after the two of you arrange your terrain in silence. “that you would call on me, truth be told I had no intention on hosting the Beggar King and hearing his pleas.”
You wince at the insulting nickname and the nonchalance it is said with in your presence, but you manage to maintain your composure. Though you still feel a bit of anger rising within you as you open the game with one of your elephants, a very aggressive move.
“Yet, I hear that you are now a company captain?” He asks without moving his grey eyes from the board as he responds with his crossbows to limit the movement ability of your Elephant.
“Yes,” you respond sharply. “you are not alone in your disdain of this so-called Beggar King, Viserys Targaryen will win his Kingdoms with swords and not pleas.”
He looks up at your once again, his grey eyes catching your purple ones. “Good. You were becoming quite the spectacle, one Tyroshi Sealord even had a private farce written about you for one of our dinner parties, your part was played by a deformed, albino, dwarf.”
You blink at the man a couple of times, not quite sure how to respond, not quite sure how you want to respond. While thinking about it you misplay, and his Heavy Cavalry takes out your Light Cavalry.

“Unfortunately, however, mercenary contacts are in high demand these days, and your Sunset Striders.” He says the name in a mild mocking tune. “are quite unproven, as is their command. I’m afraid I don’t really have a spare city contract at the moment”
>>
>>2194237
How do you respond?

>Leave the topic be, for the moment, and focus on the game. [War]

>Try to use your personal charm and the connection to your mutual friend to assure him that you can be counted on. [Persuasion]

>Bluff about the quality of the men you have hired. [Deception]

>Stand up, tell him to go fuck himself, and leave. You are the King of Westeros and will not sit here to be mocked by a glorified cheese merchant that doesn’t even intend to help you in the first place.

He is your only way to find employment in Myr, but Balaemarys, your field Spears commander, mentioned that there was a “way” for your fledgling company to find work with Tyrosh in the ongoing war.

(For more complex social exchanges where both sides will be trying to influence the other will be using the intrigue “social combat” system, however for more minor and one sided social objectives, such as this one, it’s just gonna be regular rolls)

(Deception is straight up lying through your teeth, people generally tend to react to that when(if) they find out)

Yes.

Thanks. Guess I'll go with warfare then. It's our highest stat. Maybe we'll impress the cheese merchant with some strategy.

“A pity.” You say, and focus your eyes on the table. The man’s soft voice fades into the background afterwards, his nonchalant insults falling flat as you advance your Rabble and prepare for your Trebuchet to clear out his Dragon once he inevitably advances. The game doesn’t take long, perhaps hardly over an hour as you both play fast and decisively.

You win. It’s a clear victory, but not, perhaps, the cleanest. The game was practically undecided until the last dozen turns where you capitalized on the misplacement of his last remaining Spearmen. Still, the man looks clearly impressed by your display of tactical ability. You have met men before who didn’t consider skill in Cyvasse to have any practical use, though you doubt someone with a game set which seems worth more than perhaps two ships would share such a sentiment.

“It seems that Jaenara truly did not lie about your ability, in Cyvasse at the very least.” He smiles at you, this time a bit more warmly than before.

“At the very least indeed. It’s a point of common contention how skill in the game translated to the field, is it not?” You begin, your display of skill filling your voice with confidence.
“It is, yes. In fact, it is the second most common argument I have with my son, he insists that the ability to move figures of stone on a board of wood is nothing akin to the ability to command men in battle.”
“It is a hard question to conclude, there really is only one way to find out, and even that’s just on a case by case basis.” You pause for a moment, and then continue. “Is there truly no work to be had in Myr?”
“Of course, there is!” He laughs, the softness of his voice abating. “For those who know the right people, and are capable, there lies a world of opportunity in this war.” He beckons with his arm and soon a slave shows up carrying a bottle of wine and two glasses that are offered to each of you.
“For start, a particular caravan has left Tyrosh for Volantis a week ago, trying to avoid the start of the war, unfortunately an imbecile colleague of mine has needlessly sped up the hostilities and already hired a band of base mercenary ilk, hardly soldiers even, to disrupt the caravan path that leads into the Crimson Shore and further to Volantis. It is important for me that this caravan passes through the area that the Mangy Dogs, and that is their chosen name, were hired to patrol unharmed.”

The work description catches you somewhat unguarded, guarding the caravans of the enemy city is hardly what you would have expected.

“Yes,” He says after seeing the look on your face. “we are at war with Tyrosh, but this caravan carries something of great value that simply has to reach my wife in Volantis without any delay.”
You nod, hardly about the decline the first bit of work you were offered in the city.
“Two hundred Golden Dragons will be payed out in your name once you deliver a signed and sealed letter from the caravan master that they have passed successfully through the endangered zone. Do this for me, and I’ll insure that your Free Company will be part of the next group of Bands to take part in a larger contract.
The company hired to attack caravans in the area should be no more than a hundred men strong, just a band of raiders, not even armed as a proper army unit.”

The rest of your conversation continues in a casual manner as you share in the Arbor wine, the taste of Westeros, no matter how small, rises your hopes for the success of your investment into the mercenary business. The man even refrains from insulting you.

You depart from the manse after a couple more hours and another game and ready your company for the march.
>>
>>2194971
It takes you a week to catch up with the destination Caravan in the southern part of the disputed lands. The area of your march was composed mostly of minor villages, small market towns swearing fealty to Myr, various mines and gathering places, and most importantly, large latifundia where hundreds of slaves toil in farms and fields owned by the various Magisters to produce the enormous supply of food needed to sustain the giant sprawl which is each of the Nine Free Cities.

The caravan has been waiting for you at a Caravanserai, a large roadside intended for the provision of travellers and Caravanners, a messenger has reached them two days ago to instruct them about the dangers ahead and to wait for you to arrive before going forward. You greet the caravan master, a short, stocky man with his long hair and bushy beard dyed purple. Once all hesitation is washed away by your presentation of a letter from the man that hired you, the man places himself and his men under you command and you begin to plan how to proceed.
Based on all the maps and information given to you by your employers you are now stationed about a day’s ride away from the land patrolled by the Mangy dogs.

You consider your options:
>Escort the caravan with your full force throughout the entire area. This would ensure that the “enemy” wouldn’t even attempt to attack the caravan. However, it would also be the slower choice as your company is not fully mounted. Furthermore, it would be very clear to the Myr hired mercenaries that you were the ones protecting the Tyroshi caravan. You most sincerely doubt any official repercussions given that you too were hired by a Magister, but there might remain some ill feelings between you and the Mangy Dogs.

>Escort the caravan with twenty, good, men. This force, combined with the already present caravan guards should ensure that, if you do not prevent an attack altogether, you should at least defend the cargo and guarantee a complete passage. The more competent warriors your send to command the troops the better the chance of success. You should also consider joining as well, after all the best Captain leads by example.

It is an uneventful couple of days as you escorted the Caravan up to the edge of the Disputed Lands. The Mangy Dogs never attacked, your scouts noted that they avoided even approaching the vicinity of your marching armed force, the caravan master did lament about delays, but he did not complain about the additionally safety.

During the march, what was the event that broke the dull marching routine for you.

Just want to know, are any of the overall grand conspiracies going to play into the story? Like the theory that the maesters poisoned the dragons, the order of the greenhand surviving and the
church seven secretly being an offshoot of the church of starry wisdom, thus worshipping the stranger
>>
Votes still kinda close-ish so will let it be for the night and write stuff in the morning. We are running until Sunday, so don't let the slow pace disturb you.

>>2195201
Maybe.
But, given that I haven't even heard of two of the three you mention, most likely not desu.
I have only read the main series and the Dunc and Egg stuff, not any of the companion lore pieces about the world so the grand meta theories aren't really on my mind. I might read them in the future and take stuff I like from there and insert it into the quest, but it's hardly a guarantee. With Magic especially I like it to be uncertain and mysterious.

Some of the slightly more overt, political plots will be relevant later on tho.(with my own biased conspiracies interpreting them of course)

Just because we know better than to trade Dany to the Dothraki doesn't mean we can't still have a wedding, and with it, wedding gifts.

>>
>>2195247
I can explain the other theories as, "The andals are full of shit". they claim that the andal warlords invented knighthood, iron, the written word, where the first blonde dudes and ran from the Valerian conquest.
to put that into perspective, the ryonar had iron first and likely taught it to them when they migrated to that area, geographically the andal kingdoms dont make sense from where andalos was. The original story goes
>They migrated to the axe, went to the west coast of essos
> made some kingdoms
> the Valerians chased them out when they crossed the south Rhoynar, which wasn't geographically close
> they went back to the axe, which was a peninsula surrounded by the shivering sea to the north
> went north and west form there,
> made a kingdom in the place that doesn't exist,
>left again for westeros
> and started taking over the vale because they feared that the Valerians,
> the Valerians allowed freedom of religion, would not let them worship their gods who they wanted to spread to the world.
the andals almost completely took over the vale but you dont see too many blonde vale lords despite them having the purest andal blood, while the lannisters had blonde hair before the andal invasion
And the faith of the 7 has some creepy elements
>most septs are dark as fuck
> the island where mothers go to give birth and often die leaving the faith to raise them
>the carriage of "Faith-full"corpses from a place that had little war involvement that aria saw
>The same carrage that came to kings landing
>The bones covering the statue of a king five stories tall that cersie noticed before she reinstated the militant branch of the faith
>the symbol of the warriors sons is a crystal sword, the only crystal swords are held by the white walkers
>The way they turned on the second Targ king
>the sheer amount of people who die from a "Bad Belly" When it's convienient

And Marwin the mage gave a warning about the maesters that was creepy as fuck, their power to control what messages the lords see, like how Stannis's maester intercepted the walls call for help and would have gone unnoticed if davos wasn't looking around
>>
>>2195452
Could easily be a jew situation with the valerians
Also keep in mind the faith fucking hates incest, a key part of old valerian culture
We don't know much about the shivering sea because everyone that goes their gets fucking murdered
The fact that they took over the vale is indisputable, it literally happened
Theirs no counterpoint to that
You could chalk it up to martin being inconsistent
Is their an explanation for the crystal sword?
>>
>>2195516
The jew situation doesn't make sense, they spread their religion to the first men, and no traces of the seven exist in Essos afterwords, to the point where essosi see the 7 worship as entirely westerosi throughout all the free holds, there are worshipers of the many faced god around that area though.
and it's not that the vale wasn't taken over, it's that they lied about being blonde and tall like they said they where.

On the sword part, the theory goes that the faith of the seven is a branch of the church of starry wisdom, a dawn age religion founded by the bloodstone emperor who forsake his old gods to worship a rock that fell from the stars. the church is a lovecraft reference to a church of starry wisdom that had everything in sevens. Seven chairs, seven pillars, seven sided stone that came from the heavens etc. The high septon also wears a crown with seven crystals. nothing else about the sword though.

I didn't bring up how the high septons arrived at old town, after getting permission to spread the faith, they converted a hightower, right as he had a son he died mysteriously, the high septon became the high septon and decided to raise the son despite the fact that he would have had cousins and other family members to raise him. this is around the time the Manderlys arrived in the north.

and it's not a stretch that people could build a bunch of boats to travel across the narrow sea, but going into the shivering sea? like you said no one knows what's there, it's unlikely that people who built nothing that would become even ruins after being driven out would be able to build ships that can make the journey and back.
>>
>>2195688
The reason for their religeon not being anywhere in essos could ne explained as the valerions really, really hating the faith
They spread so deep into westeros because
A.) They burnt down the weirwoods
B.) They ruled as kings for like millenium
C.) Mass lynching of older westerosi faiths probably took place
For the branch theroy to work the andals would have had to have migrated from the jade sea to the axe then to the rhyon and back to the axe
It doesn't make logical sense on how it got to where it is
>>
>>2195727
maestars do say they might have migrated from a place even further east, by that lake that's near the dothraki sea, as a migratory people until they came to the axe, although a preacher of the church may have come from further east, after all the church did travel far in it's years.
The Valerians allowed just about every religion in their empire, it was a sort of pride for them that advanced civilisations would allow freedom of religion. and the high septon was willing to treat with Aegon despite him being an abomination of incest, pretty much all except the second and third targ kings where tolerated for their incest when the church was at it's weakest at the time. in fact the incest thing has no mention until the targs by a primary, or secondary source before the conquest
And them spreading far isn't a part of contention, they are just retroactively altering truths about themselves due to them lying about their religion to the commoners, we hear septons say that people wouldn't understand the aspect part of the god, so they say there's seven of them. it's suspected that they're also lying about most other things.
>>
>>2195452
one other thing I forgot to mention, they fled back to the axe while the Ryonar where still around and strong, the Valerians might not have had contact with them untill they already set up kingdoms in westeros
>>
>>2195772
That changes alot about the incest shit and makes their lack of power on essos make sense
Also anyone else want to start up and angevian empire equivalent

>>
>>2195972
The bloodlines, man.
They have to remain pure.
Also, Targaryen tradition. If the seven didn't want us to fuck our sister, why did the Mother bless our mother with daughter?
>>
>>2195976
It is also tradition to marry into Dorne as well. If we can get Arrianne for ourselves that would be nice. But if shack up with a volantese girl that has valyrian descent than marrying Danny off into one of the seven kingdoms could be just as usefull if not more so.
>>

Family bonding time it is then.

It is a grim and dull realization that the soldier’s life is composed mostly of marching, making camp, and then marching again. Your conclusion, or rather, worrisome query is even confirmed by the two most experienced men in your camp, Innodos and Balaemarys, though each did have a peculiar take on it.
“It is a good life, orderly.” Said the Sergeant
“It is mostly dull and boring, yes, captain. But just wait for your first battle! The violent rush of it makes even a million days of marching worth it!” Said the Tiger, his eyes flashing with genuine excitement.
The Caravan escort is entirely uncontested, you just march through wheeled out roads between mines, forests, and even more latifundia. After two days you finally got the caravan master to keep quiet about delays and appreciate the safety you are providing. Soon the entire company fell into a routine devised between yourself and the Sergeant, though you did mostly just approve it.
All men wake up just past sunrise, two thirds prepare for departure, one third drills, all march, two thirds sets the camp, one third drills again. Each evening the men are regrouped as per a system that takes the Quartermaster a fair amount of time, and an untold amount of parchment to manage.
Your routine is somewhat freer, though still repetitive. You wake up, spar with Roggo while your servants pack your tent, hop on your horse, and ride along with the rest of your men, and spar some more before settling down for the night in your raised tent. It’s a good thing you hired some servants.
Today you decide to interrupt Dany’s lessons, the Maester has proven not only a valuable hire in managing the accounts of the company, but also as your sister’s personal tutor.
You excuse yourself from your Dothraki sworn sword who doesn’t seem too bothered as the moment you sheath your sword Baleamarys rises and asks for some sparring himself.
>>
>>2196470
You find Dany and the Maester in your tent, sitting side to side on a bed with a small table with a book laid out in front of them.

“Words?” Is the first thing you hear the man asking Dany’s as you enter and drag the only chair in the tent in front of them.
“uhm, Never Resting?” The girl responds and looks up to the brown-haired man.
“Is that a question or an answer?”
“Answer!” She quickly asserts, with a minor blush.
“Good.” He bows his head when he sees your approach. “Your Grace.”
“Heraldry, again?”
Interrupting her teacher, Dany chips in with a proudly recited answer. “The Maester Holt says that it is the basis of all lordly education in Westeros.” You ruffle her hair and look to the Maester who finishes for her. “They drill it into us at the Citadel without mercy, those that don’t already know it on account of being noble at least. We could hardly serve the Lords properly if we could not tell them apart.” You shrug in response and the man turns back to Dany.
“House Volaryon?”

“Arms: Silver Seahorse on a sea of Green, Words: …, uhm, … eh,” Her eyes rise to the roof as her fingers make way to her chin, when still nothing comes out she gives you a sideways glance

“The Old, The True, The Brave” You finish for your sister. “Masters of Driftmark and Lords of the Tides, a house like ours from Valyria. They were the first to swear fealty during the Conquest and were often our masters of ships. The most famous lord of this family was –“

-“The Sea Snake!” The girl interrupts you. “He sailed nine times to Essos and made so much money that he was the richest man in Westeros.”
“Anything to add?” You turn to the Maester.
“Too much,” He smiles. “Corlys Velaryon was one of the key figures of the Dance of Dragons, which I currently lack a history to teach from about”
“Viserys read some about it, about how Vhagar and Arrax fought in a storm!”
“You posses a volume, Your Grace?”
You shake your head. “A Red Priest from Lys allowed us to read from his when we sailed to Myr, anyhow House Martell.”

“The Princes of Dorne, they are a union of Andal and Rhoynish royalty, and they allow girls to be queens as well if they are older than their brothers. Arms: A yellow spear piercing a red sun on an orange field. Words: Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken”
“Rhaegar was married to Ellia of House Martell, the sister of the current prince. House Tyrell.”

“of Highgarden, the Lords of the Reach and Wardens of the South since the Gardener Kings were burned by our ancestors during the Conquest. Arms: A golden rose on a green field, Words: For All Seasons”

“Wrong.” Joins in the Maester. “Those are the words of House Wendwater, the words of house Tyrell are Growing Strong.”
“They pretended to side with their rightful King during the Usurper’s war,” You take back the word and girl’s attention. “,but while Rhaegar died on the Trident they spent a year failing to siege down Storm’s End, and then bend the knee without fighting while their army was still strong. House Lannister?!” Anger starts creeping into your tone.

“…the Lords of Casterly Rock, the richest house of Westeros, Wardens of the West. Arms: A golden lion on a bloody field. Words: Hear me Roar.”

You nod. “They stayed out of the war until it was already lost and then they sacked the Capital. Jaime Lannister, the firstborn son of the current Lord, has broken his Kingsguard vows and murdered our father in cold blood. House Baratheon.”

“The house of the Usurper, formed by Orys Baratheon the bastard brother of Aegon the Conqueror, they were the lords of Storm’s End, before stealing the Iron Throne from us. Words: Ours is the Fury. Arms: A Black Stag on a Gold Field."

“A black crowned sta-“ The Maester begins to correct the girl absentmindedly but then he catches your glance and shuts himself.

“A crowned stag, yes. It will be uncrowned again soon enough. House Targaryen?”

At that Dany rolls her eyes, but responds anyhow. “The last Dragonlords of the Valyrian freehold who moved to the Castle of Dragonstone because a woman of the family dreamed of the Doom years before it occurred. Three hundred years ago Aegon the Conqueror along with his two sisters and three dragons conquered the seven kingdoms and forged the Iron Throne from the swords of his enemies. Arms: A red three headed dragon on a black background. Words: Fire and Blood.”

You cup her chin, raise her head, and look deep into her purple eyes. “We’re the Blood of the Dragon, never forget that sister, what our ancestors were, and what we by right should be as well. What I will make us again.”

The girl just smiles, and nods, her eyes filled with pride and adoration.

The rest of the evening follows in a casual educational fashion as you play the guessing game of Heraldry with almost no use for the Maester. You soon send him away to attend to his other duties and when it gets dark the two of you fall asleep in the bed wrapped in each other’s arms.

The rest of the days fall back into the standard marching rhythm, and you soon arrive at the border of the Disputed Lands, marked by the sighting of the nearby hill with a small Volantene outpost. You have the caravan master sign and seal the required paper for you and depart. You also ask him to have your thanks delivered to Jaenara, if she is in Volantis, for setting up your meeting with the Magister in the first place.

The march back is no less dull than the march there. You try to pass through the caravan tracks again, hoping for perhaps some bounty, but there is nothing, all the caravans already heard the sounds of war and decided to wait it out rather than risk being plundered or spend too much on hiring security.

Still, the promise your employer made of real war work keeps you going and motivated to reach Myr as fast as possible. You even have the men practice their forced march for a few days. Regardless, it is more than a week’s march anyhow, what event breaks your routine on the way back?

Every night. Every, single, night since the moment you hired him the exiled Qohori nobleman has sung at midnight. He does it near the edge of the camp, and it does not last long, so it is not an immediate bother, yet still, the curiosity of the habit lingers on your mind.
The entire man is a curiosity truth be told. The armour he wears, a coat of chains in which each link is a different colour and different hue of the rainbow, is something you have never seen before. It is something that you barely even thought was possible, when you first saw it you thought that it was simply a layer of paint on top of the steel links, but after catching a glimpse of it here and there, and hearing the men talk about it, it has become clear that the colour is part of the metal itself. He never seems to take it off either.
You are unable to sleep today, and so you wander the camp as the moon is high above you. Then you hear the singing, and having nothing else to do, you follow it. It’s a bizarre tongue, it seems Valyrian, but not quite, and the tune too are alien, sometimes too high, sometimes too low, yet always pleasant. Well, insofar as something that sends shivers down your spine can be considered pleasant.
You find the man a couple meters outside of the northwestern corner of your camp, decked out in his rainbow chain and thin plate shin and arm guards, both impossibly green. His song slowly finishes some minute or two after you sit down on a nearby rock to observe him.
“Captain” He nods his head to you as he notices you when he begins to return to the camp. “You are not my first audience, but the most distinguished by far.” He gives you a wide smile, his face is full of colour. His lips full and crimson red, his long hair, which falls to his shoulders, dark and auburn, his eyes bright and golden like Amber with a fire shining through it, his teeth near shining white. He matches you in height, his cheeks are sharp and his body lithe.
“I have never heard singing like that”
“Have you ever been to Braavos, Captain?”
You nod, you spent most of your childhood there after all.
“Do you know the great house of white marble with a silvered dome on top of it?”
“…the Temple of the Moonsingers? Are you? I thought those were, what is the name –“
“Jogos Nhai? Yes, they are, for the most part. I’m not a true Moonsinger, but I know some of their ways, my wife taught me, for a while at least, before my father had her killed because he found my learning, oh how he put it, unbecoming.” He speaks always in a cheerful tone, without any falter of it at any part, he near laughs at the end even. “Anyhow, it’s the same song every night, but always in a different way -”
“What language?” You interrupt as the question has been whirling in your mind the most.
“The secret Black Tongue of Qohor” He answers without skipping a beat. “It’s a plea, it’s a way to beg the Great Goat for forgiveness.”

“Forgiveness, did you not say that you were unrightfully cast out, that the lot was corrupted?”

“Oh, no, no no no no no no, for that, Captain, there is no forgiveness needed, only vengeance, and justice. Forgiveness I ask because I falter in my duty to the Goat.” He sits down on a rock opposite of you as he keeps talking. “She is a strict mother, if one wants to drink of her black teat she requires a daily tithe of blood.” He looks at his own, somewhat pale, uncovered underarms as he speaks, his veins defined and clearly visible. “Every day gallons of blood are spilled in the streets and temples of Qohor, blood of horses and calves and bulls, on our sacred days the blood of men as well for that is the most potent of all. For the most part it belongs to common filth, criminals, and such, but in times of need the children of noble families are chosen, offered sometimes even.”

He looks up from his arms and smiles at you again, the talk of blood sacrifice either not unnerving him in the slightest, or making him happy. “And in times of most urgent need, when the priests call for a grand symposium the blood of grown noblemen is demanded as well, a sacred lot is used. Such was to be my fate. The priests all dreamt of some dark omen, a comet with a red tail heralding a great change, a great disaster. The highest sacrifice was needed.”

He spits on the ground, the first semblance of negative emotion appearing on his visage. “Yet, the lot was corrupted indeed! The Goat would never have asked for me! I was her greatest follower amongst all the well-bred laymen, amongst all the laymen even. I have tasted more of her sweet milk than many of the priests. Besides, my father is impotent and has no other sons, his daughters are spread around the world, and the one who remains in Qohor is married to another nobleman of great greed and small faith. It’s clear, corrupt the lot, kill the heir, wait till the old man dies, take over his wealth.”

He shrugs and then shakes his head and a sliver of anger enters his voice “I do not mind, truly, the game of politics has always been played this way, but to use a sacred ritual for the purpose, that’s just blasphemy.”

“Anyhow,” he continues after half a moment’s pause “,my exiled condition does not permit me the luxury to sacrifice to her as is proper, both for lack of resources and for lack of proper ceremonial places. So,” he looks up at the moon longingly “I sing to her instead. It is not blood, but the singing has power. I hope that is enough to appease her somewhat. It is not ideal, but it is the only thing I have.”

>”What God is it that demands the blood of men? It sounds more like a Demon.”

(I kinda went with a longer post covering both of the remaining questions so the remaining choices would be a bit more reactive)

“What ceremony is needed to sacrifice to your Goat? Do you need a priest? A special tool? Are the men you kill in battle a good sacrifice?”

The man shakes his head, but his face lights up at your interest in the topic, most likely an unusual happening. “In battle, no. Else the whole world would do her homage. There needs be a ritual blade of spellforged, well, Valyrian steel. That I have. The proper rites spoken in the Black Tongue, those I know as well. And a temple of black stone. These three sings of power bind the blood to the goddess. At least that’s what the books say.” He chuckles “Who can truly know for sure? Perhaps I shall buy a beast when we are next in town and slit its throat on the bare sand someday, then see if it put my dreams at ease.”

He doesn’t seem to continue, nor elaborate on the last mention, so you press on with your questions ”Interesting, this Black Tongue, what is it? It sounded vaguely Valyrian when you sung.”
“Yes, it is High Valyrian. A specific dialect of it that grew over the years with loanwords from the eastern tongues of Qarth and Asshai. At first it was merely the jargon of the first priests who did not wish the secrets of the Goat to be overheard, then, once the religious pluralism of the freehold could no longer be endured by the faithful and they left to colonize the logging camp that would become Qohor, the jargon remained, and it became the working language of the priestly mysteries while the common slang of Qohor arose from the standard Valyrian of the uninitiated.

The secret tongue is language of power, thanks to already powerful Valyrian base with added unique concepts of Qarth and Asshai makes it a language fit more than any other for prayer, and for other things ...”

“...with singing among them?”

“Yes, that too." He chuckles. "Though the songs I sing are truly more prayer than the melodies than the bards amuse the crowds with.”

“The songs that your wife taught you? The one murdered by your father? You spoke so nonchalantly about it.”

He shrugs. “It was years ago, when I first ceased to be a boy and became a grown man.” You remember from the singing up details that the man is now some eight years older than you, though he looks no less youthful than you.

“We met in Vaes Dothrak, I went there to oversee the sale of some timber and hides, they are usually shipped down the Rhoyne to the Volantene cities, but a few caravans we send east as well"

"I have always had a fascination with the strange and distant, so when I saw a small group of Jogos Nhai this far west I was immediately consumed. What gifts my father gave me to offer the Khals so that they would not even show up in front of our walls I instead bestowed upon the easterners about whom I have before only heard in the marketplaces of Qohor. Amongst them was she. No less ugly than the rest of them. Short, swarthy, bow legged, completely bald, and her head pointed upwards as a result of some savage child-rearing custom. I would not even have guessed that she was a woman if not for her voice. How sweet it was! How strong! How powerful! How soft! It was all the things you heard tonight, yet a thousand times more. I fell in love the moment I heard it, and she too must have found something mesmerizing in me for soon we were spending night and day in the sheets of her strange rounded tent, that they call a Yurt. All the whores of Lys couldn’t in me fuel the lusts the voice of this barbarian woman could.”

“The love burned fast, and soon I was begging her day and night to teach me the ways of her singing, the powers of her religion, she wanted to as well, for I am certain she could feel that I was capable of it, that my blood carried the seed of power, and she loved me deeply I know, so to keep denying such a heartfelt request hurt her near as much as myself. Yet, there was a problem. Amongst the Jogos Nhai only the women are permitted to become Moonsingers. It would be blasphemy enough to teach a foreigner, make him a man on top of it” He shakes his head. “– she would never dare lest she is cast out by the divine.”
“But I would not be denied, I never was one to be denied.” He grins at you. “So, I did what the boys of Jogos Nhai in whom the power is felt are made to do, I dressed, and lived, as a woman. I became her wife as much as she was mine.”

Your raise your eyebrow, but let him continue without interruption

“Then she could deny me no longer and began to teach me. First in Vaes Dothrak, for a few months, then, once both she and her nomadic band could bear the same place no longer, I bade her take us towards Qohor. She wanted to go back east, yet she could not deny my tears. I loved her, and the distant east was something curious, yet I could not abandon the Goat, and I know that if I rode east I would never have a chance to return for the warlike nature of their plains. So, we joined some Caravan full of goods from YiTi and rode towards Qohor."
>>
>>2199684
"I learned fast and by the time we arrived home I already could infuse the singing with power. Still, it was spectacle when we came. A prominent noble son arriving to the city dressed in YiTish silken robes and in a company of far away savages.” He laughs once again. “I did not care one bit. For I was learning great power, and what was the cost?! To wear a dress? To chew herbs which made my skin soft, and my lusts vanish? That is for the sake of power no cost at all! When we sang together in the heart of the city no man could resist the tune, half the women couldn’t either!” His eyes gleam with passion as he recounts the latter parts of the story.

“Yet,” He sighs “it was not to be. One day, some two months after we arrived to Qohor, the cockless, soulless, Unsulied forced their way into the chamber where I was staying with the Nomads, they speared all the men, and dragged the two wives into our family temple where my father slit her throat with my own fucking dagger and told me to quit the farce.” Suddenly he stomps his foot on the ground in frustration. “I cried that night, for the beauty and love that I have lost, but he ruined far more. If only he could have endured the mockery of his peers for another year or two I would have learned all that she knew of the moonsinger art! Then let him slit her throat a thousand times! Still I would mourn her deeply, but at least I would have more to remember her by...”

He shrugs once again in response. “It is not Asshai, and those with power in their blood are scattered all around the world, but in Qohor there is more avenue for practice then elsewhere in the Free Cities, so, yes, I suppose. At the very least, our God and our priests understand where power truly lies.” He stands up, looks deeply into your eyes, smiles, and then begins to walk back towards the tents. “Come visit sometimes, Captain. Ideally once you can crush three thousand Unsullied and still have enough men remaining to garrison the city, then you’ll be able to see for yourself, and from the highest mansion in the city as well!” It’s said with laughter in his voice, but you do not doubt the offer(or is it a plea perhaps?) is sincere.

You spend a couple more minutes staring at the moon, contemplating the strange exchange, and then go to sleep as well. The rest of your march is significantly more uneventful and mundane. Which, perhaps, is for the best.

On your return to Myr several days later you see the encampments in front of the gates much smaller than before, even the Golden Company is gone. It seems that the war has started in full force.

You have the men encamp and make way again to the Magister’s manse to deliver the letter confirming your success. He, again, meets you in the garden and has a slave bring you a purse heavy with golden coins once he reads the letter with an expression of glee. You play another game of Cyvasse together, he wins this time, and he informs you that Tyrosh has sent the Company of the Cat to seize the product of one of his farming plantations and a group of Free Companies is banding together to form an adequate army that could stand against the Cat on the field. Four other, of similar size to yours, have already signed the contract. The Stormcrows, The Iron Hammers, The Widowmakers and The Company of the Walrus - all young and untried bands. Together your entire force would number something over a thousand men. Your promised payment for engaging in this operation would be three hundred Golden Dragons. He gives you until tomorrow to sign and be ready to march.
>>
>>2200053
When you return to camp, ready to get a good night’s rest and sign the paper you are approached by the Spear Company commander who enquires about the details of your future work, when you tell him he just spits on the ground. “It’s a waste of time, Viserys. Work like this barely covers what it takes to pay and replace the men, and still there is no glory in a skirmish between a couple thousand men. Besides, you’d have to fight the other Captains tooth and nail for the overall command, and if you don’t get it you are just there to watch. Bloody, fucking, waste of time.”

“and I suppose you have an alternative? The “way” you mentioned before we marched off to guard the caravan.”

“Aye, the Seconds Sons were hired to drive the Axeborn out of some amber collection site only a few days south from Myr. It’s a desperate fucking job given that both the companies are evenly matched. If the Seconds Sons weren’t broke and didn’t elect a moron w-they wouldn’t have ever taken it. It’s a golden opportunity, only by the grace of the Gods they haven’t taken the job long before we managed to return. If we follow them, we can raid their camp, kill whatever is left of them on the field, help the Axeborn escort the bounty to Tyrosh, and find some better work there. Hell, if the Axeborn are beaten hard enough we can take the entire amber haul for ourselves.”

“Didn’t you say the Seconds Sons were broke? What is there to raid in their camp then?”

“Weapons, food supplies, personal belongings, the company is broke, but the men each still have enough so that when all their throats are cut it’ll make a fair amount overall."

“Isn’t switching sides mid war looked down upon?”

He just looks for a moment with a blank expression, and then snorts. “The Golden Company is the only one I know of that never broke a contract or switched sides, others do it as often as they can get away with. The Seconds Sons have even done so on the day of battle a couple of times.”

“And how do I know that instead of setting a trap for the Seconds Sons you are not luring me into one? You were with them only until a couple of weeks ago.”

“Aye, I spent five years leading every single victorious cavalry charge the company had, and they still elect a filthy Braavosi, bastard, dog that removes me from Cavalry command out of a personal grudge. Fuck the Second Sons!”

How do you proceed:

>Take the contract with Myr and join the four other Free Companies against their campaign against the Company of the Cat

>Follow the Seconds Sons and capitalize on their weakened state and then switch sides to Tyrosh.

Who cares about our rep in Essos, this is a quicker way to strengthen our company - a quicker way to the Iron Throne
>>
>>2200157
Rep in Essos ends up as Rep in Westeros. News spreads, and when we want land in Westeros do we want people to believe us to be oathbreakers and common sell swords, or someone who embodies the virtues of a king? I know Robert is a low bar, but that just means we can shine that much brighter.
>>
>>2200157
>he doesn't understand that angering people who pay us might result in getting assassinated or otherwise moved against due to offending power personages
>>
You answer him before he can retreat and give you the night to think about it. “The Golden Company is the only one that can even threaten the invasion of Westeros, I aim to be more like them, a proper, respectable, army, than just another fickly sellsword band.”

He shakes his head and a look of disappointment crosses his face. Though you suspect it’s more because of not being able to have his payback on the Second Sons rather than because of your reasoning. At least that’s what you hope. It’s better to have an officer have some questionable personal motivations than to have him question your decisions for their own worth.

You make your way towards your tent, and this time have Dany read to you instead of the other way around. You fall asleep to the sound of your younger sister practicing her Westerosi reading from some inventory details scroll Holt provided.

Before noon of the next day you are already on the march. The Sunset Striders. The Stormcrows. The Company of the Walrus. The Widowmakers, and the Iron Hammers. Altogether eleven hundred fighting men.
Three hundred cavalry of the Stormcrows, two hundred light and one hundred heavy.
Three hundred spears of the Widowmakers
A hundred spears and a hundred crossbows of your own.
A hundred axemen and a hundred archers of the Iron Hammers.
And, a hundred heavy swordsmen of the Company of the Walrus.

Not quite a proper army, but a fair Mercenary Company, well, if it was all under a single commander at least. You are expected to match the Company of the Cat in size.

You march in close vicinity and your camps too are set up nearby. With pride you observe that yours is by far the neatest and most cleanly organized, most likely the courtesy of the Camp Sergeant.
The march routine is no less dull than on the previous ones, though you are somewhat getting used to it by this time.

Today, though, your evening sparring with Roggo, which is observed and commented upon by Balaemarys, is interrupted when two dozen Stormcrows loudly march up into your camp and towards yourself, at their front is their Captain, with his medium length hair and mustache dyed in a flamboyant mix of purple and yellow, and a man from your company with his hands tied behind his back and his face beaten and bleating being pushed forward by the remaining mercenaries. You sheathe your blade and turn to face them.
>>
>>2200191
Once they are in front of your they toss the crossbowman whose name you can’t really recall now to the ground and the Captain kicks him full force in the ribs before addressing you. “This fuck gutted one of my veteran riders over dice!” his expression and tone are pure rage. “Now, I understand you are new to this business, so let me explain how this works, blood is repaid either by gold, or by blood –

“ugh” the accused man coughs “he…was.. he was cheatin’ .. captn’…grace..”

The Stormcrows captain interrupts his address of you, turns back to the crossbowman and kicks him again. Then he shouts at the man, spit escaping his mouth with every sound. “If a man is cheating you have all the other men at the table hold him still while you search his pockets and try out his dice! You don’t fucking just cut up someone who is worth ten times more than you because you can’t handle losing whatever whore money you had left!” He spits on him one more time, this time deliberately, and turns back to you, the tone of his voice softer, but still angry, and finishes his previous line of thought.

“ – and if the fuckup in question has screwed things above his station, the issue goes to the captains. And so, here we are. What will it be then, Captain? Blood, or Gold?”

>”Gold.” [Lose 20 Gold Coins]

>Have the man whipped. The men in the Sunset Striders are promised Knighthoods, and that comes with a certain level of behavioral expectations.

>>2200230
I still disagree with that course of action. We want our men to be loyal to us because they like us in addition to the promise of riches & rewards. Deliberately murdering a man in an agonizing and painful way to make a point about expectations is not a good way to foster long-term loyalty.

>>2200239
I can get behind having him flogged in addition to ponying up so we don't look like we'll totally bitch out and cover for our guys any time they fuck up.
>>

>>2200208
to >>2200239
>>
>>2200256
That also would be pretty cool. Be a good way of making us look tough without invoking too much ire but if we're gonna do write ins we should probably stick with something instead of constantly changing our minds every few minutes.
>>
>>2200206
>>
>>2200260
>>2200256
I vote duel to first blood on the basis that we didn't see our man misbehaving and he's one of our men.
If we lose then they get the 20G and he's flogged
If we win they consider at an end, and we maybe flog the man for belching disrepute to our company anyway.
>>
>>2200287
He did do it though. He admitted to it. Everyone seems to be in agreement over the facts of the matter. It just depends on if we believe he did something wrong by jumping to murder.
>>
>>2200287
If we lose the honor duel the Stormcrows will probably take 20g and our man for the killing. Since they'll be wanting the best possible terms should we resolve things via an honor duel.

If we resolve via honor duel and win the honor duel then they get a big fucking pile of nothing but they can't claim we cheated them of anything or that it was ignobly done.
>>
Generally with write ins in the early part of the quest try to limit them to less tense conversations or to think of them and their consequences within the context of the provided option choices. For example, >>2200239 is just a clear combination of two choices with a less drastic approach(and thus results) while the >>2200256 duel suggestion I essentially see on the interpersonal level of the "fuck off" choice since you are merely conditioning your denial of their request on the quickness of your blade and the intention is much the same, keeping both the man and the gold.

Once the quest progresses and both our independent agenda grows and overall themes and characterization get more established, feel free to go more broad with write ins.

I hope this is not too role-play limiting, but it feels like a good guideline to me.
>>
>>2200335
Understandable run a great quest.

Given our limited options I'm sticking with paying the guy off, we don't want him resenting us and we don't want our men thinking we'll fuck them over if push comes to shove.

Personally, the man killed an officer and is risking infighting between the units over petty crap. Our man is a petty, hotheaded murdering scumbag. It wasn't an officer, just a veteran soldier I think.

Also; we only have about 200 men, so we can't spare any on displays of power/strength right now.

“Gold.” You say and then lead the Stormwcrows to the Quartmermaster’s tent where you have Holt pay them out a sensible due. Once the injured party is gone from you camp you go talk to Innodos and make sure that the murderer is flogged, and assigned to latrine duty for a month. There will be discipline in your ranks, fuckups must be punished at least a bit.

The purple haired Captain seemed pleased with your decision, his eyes gleamed when the Maester handed over the gold.

The next few days are calm and uneventful. You soon the reach the vicinity of the plantation the spoils of which you are hired to protect, and your scouts are able to make out the Company of the Cat in their camp half a day’s march from the hillsite here your collaged army makes camp. The very same evening a meeting of the captains is called in the extravagant commander’s tent of the Stormcrows. There are no pleasantries and you move to business the moment you are all seated round a table.

“How many of them then?” Asks the giant of a man that leads the Company of the Walrus
“No more than a thousand, based on the number of tents.” The Widowmakers Captain is a bald, wiry man with a scar across his face.
“How many of those on horse?” You interject, not wanting to be left out of the talk.
“It’s the Cat, those fucks are all spears I think for some fucked up reason.” The Iron Hammers captain, a man with rich dark hair and pure blue eyes, shakes his head as he speaks.
“Veteran spears.” Notes the bald man.
“Who cares?! The moment I’m behind them they can’t turn fast enough.” Asserts with a smile your host, the Captain of the Stormcrows.
“Just don’t go raiding their camp while we are dying on the field.” Says the Walrus.
“Fuck you.”

The back and forth banter continues for a few minutes before the question of command is brought up. The Stormcrow and Walrus speak first.

“So, who wants it then? Nobody here seems fucking stupid enough to get my riders killed, so I’m taking the field.”
“Aye, same with me.”
“It’s mine.” The tone of the Widowmaker leaves no room for negotiation, but you don’t let that stop you. “No, it’s not.”
“Eh, you are barely a man yet, what battles have you even fought in to command them?!”
“I don’t need to be a footsoldier to know how commanders win them, I have read on war more than any of you”
“Read?!” He laughs, though it is not a kind laugh. “Played a lot of Cyvasse too, yes?!”
“Fuck off.” Joins in the black-haired man, “the game is good. You two sort it out, I don’t care either.”
The scarred man ignores the other mercenary and just glares at you. “Say what you want, you are not ready for this shit, and you know it.”

Begin Intrigue
Walrus – DR 5 – Composure 6 – Intrigue Defense 6
Iron Hammers – DR 3 – Composure 9 – Intrigue Defense 7
Stormcrows – DR 2 – Composure 12 – Intrigue Defense 8

Viserys – DR 5 – Composure 9 – Intrigue Defense 9

(You Goal in this intrigue is to convince at least two of the three remaining Captains to support you as the commander before the Widowmakers captain intimidates you into compliance and passing over the command to him. It works much the same way as combat with Composure representing Health.

Disposition Reduction* is determined by disposition towards the given characters. For example, the Walrus Captain doesn’t particularly like the idea of some booknerd kid commanding him so his base DR is increased, while the Iron Hammers Captain holds the opposite view and so his is lowered and the Stormcrows Captain likes you for how you acted during the murderer situation and doesn’t really care about the command anyhow so his DR is severely lowered. While you dislike the Widowmakers Captain because he is ugly and seems like a twat so your own DR is increased.

For simplicity sake you will be “attacking” the three voters while the Widowmakers Captain will be “attacking" you.

As we continue forward in the quest the various options for intrigue will expand. There is more stuff and all of them can be used with deception as well, but more on that another time)

*which conveniently is the same as damage reduction

Let me spew my autistic plans for return for a bit
We need to get alot of allies, specifically anyone in pentos
If we can cut off pentosi trade with westeros it might pull bobby b/joffery into an oversea war and completely trash the economy of westeros which would lead to unrest in westeros

While littlefinger is making the debt even worse we reach out to dorne, the stormlands, and practically any targ supporter left (but not the reach,i want to fuck the reach in the ass and cut it down to size, fuck flowers they're too big) and start planning our grand return
When the war of the five kings starts, (you know it will, varys and little finger need a big ass civil war to pull of most of their plans) we get our ally aurelian waters to become master of the ships when stannis breaks off, get him to convince who ever is in charge to build a giant fleet, then betray them and take that fleet to us
We will the prepare our large host for naval invasion
When we get to to the stepstones load up on some dornish soldiers and have dorne and the stormlands start a front along the dornish marchs to pull the majority of the army away
Then slip into kingslanding with the host and take the city
>>
>>2202681
I'd rather appeal to the fucking north than ask Dorne for help.

The scarred man ignores the other mercenary and just glares at you. “Say what you want, you are not ready for this shit, and you know it.”

“Ready for what? There’ll hardly be two thousand men on the field, and what can they even do when all they are is a thousand spears?! They’ll walk straight at us and our horse will dance around them.”

The man glares at you even more intently, he leans closer towards you and speak with a gruff voice. “You think it’s that easy boy, that easy whe-“

“Yes.” His feeble attempt at making you doubt yourself have no effect. You are the heir of the Targaryen dynasty and the rightful King of Westeros, this joke of a battle would have been easy for you even if you had never read a military treatise in your life.

The Stormcrows Captain chuckles at your interruption and then shrugs. “The young one is not wrong.”

“Aye” Adds the Walrus “He seems to, somehow, have an idea of what he is talking about.”

Then the Iron Hammer joins in. “Let’s finish this I like to get a full sleep before battle. I vote for him as well.”

And with that, you are voted as the battle commander of your combined forces. The bald man slaps the table in rage, but he can’t do anything against such a clear advantage of votes and so he concedes to the command.

That concludes your meeting and you all return to your own camps.

The next morning you are met with a Stormcrows scout informing you that the Company of the Cat has drawn up a battle line in a field between your position and the occupied latifundium. You ride out to observe the terrain, but there really is nothing to use to your advantage, and there isn’t any point in avoiding battle and you and you can't really get around them without them seeing it from miles ahead, so you send orders to all the camps to get ready and prepare for battle by noon.
>>
(For Warfare we will not be using the book system because individual unit commanding would just get too tedious and turn the quest into a pseudo-wargame which I don’t want.

Instead, for each battle you will be faced with a selection of deployment orders and or general tactics that you can choose from and only the rolls for the “win condition” part of your army will be made to see if your master plan is successful. Alternatively, since I probably won’t be able to think of several unique super clever military tactic outsmartments for each and every single battle, some will instead be decided by zooming in on relevant unit commanders or “Heroes” attached to units and rolling for their individual prowess to decide the battle.

For example: Your Cav charge will inevitably get bogged down by the enemy cav charge and there is really no grand master keikaku you(I) can suddenly think of so we instead look at Roggo cutting down a dozen of the enemy and helping your unit prevail on the field. This will most likely also be the focus when you find yourself in a situation without overall command.

I assume that this part of the quest will have the greatest avenue for clever write ins, but as before, probably not right from the start.)

There is truly noting fancy to consider on the battlefield. The Company of the Cat have formed a spearwall some five ranks deep and a hundred shoulders long and the entire plain is just empty, grassland flat. Your own infantry line is a shieldwall of smaller size(600 to 1000) but varied arms. Besides that you also have two hundred marksmen, and three hundred horse, one in three heavily armoured.

What are your orders?

>Place the Swordsmen and Axemen in the centre of your line, trying to breach the enemy centre. Your flanks will get surrounded thanks to the greater length of their line, have the Cavalry respond accordingly and fortify whichever flank is in greater need of aid to hold and help finish off the broken enemy formation once the enemy centre runs.

>Focus your heavier infantry on one flank, and have the cavalry repeatedly charge down the other one. Your centre will be able to barely hold at best, but they should get encircled soon enough.

In either case your archers and crossbowmen will shoot at the approaching spearwall.

Is this interactive enough? Does it have the potential to be?
>>

Cav charging into spear is a bad plan, but fucking with spearmen who are already engaged? It can work.
>>
the Hannibal tactic is not bad, but he knew his soldiers better than we do, mercs had a tendency to break more than levies in some eras because they wanted to live so I have to go with the one that'l break the center first

Well ideally we would make our line the same length as theirs, have the infantry focus on keeping the spear men pinned while the Cav circles around and charges in from the back. Break those guys morale and we can start curling in from the edges, forcing a rout down the line.

Could we not just keep using the archers and crossbow to pelt them, retreat as they advance, rinse and repeat?

A spearwall in formation is almost always slower and we can always use the cavalry and shock infantry to break them if the lose formation.
>>
>>2202944
You want good long-term planning? I'll give it my best shot, but so much is yet to be learned, yet to be decided that any projections are unreliable at best. It's hard to form a coherent plan in these circumstances, but let's see how it goes.

First, let's go over our assets. We have:
1) 1 (One) Rightful King of Westeros, King of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men. The blood of the dragon, heir and last hope of a line stretching back into antiquity.
2) 1 (One) Young Princess of Westeros, in whose veins flows the Dragon's blood of our line.
3) Two-hundred men at arms.
4) A few hundred golden coins.

This is hardly a king's treasury, but we could be in a much worse position. As romantic and glamorous as the life of a mercenary may seem, it's hardly the ideal situation. Sure, so long as there is steady work we'll be able to pay the men - but if ever we lack for a contract, their tempers will grow shorter as their belts and purse-strings grow tighter. How long will this war last? And how long will pass before the next? We can follow the scent of blood and battle across the continent, but how will we see that our sister receives the courtly education that someone of her High Birth deserves? Commanding Men may be where our natural talents lie, but too many things are uncertain in the life of a mercenary.

So what are our options? We can remain a soldier of fortune, steadily building up our mercenary company and chasing the most lucrative contracts, or we could aspire to greater things. Let me ask you this, who employs the mercenaries? Merchant lords, that's who. They might not cling to titles as fiercely as men is Westeros, but they are lords nonetheless. With our first windfall we will be tempted to expand the Company or simply to celebrate our success - I tell you that these siren calls should be silenced! We should get into the most lucrative business around and start building a fortune with which to marshal an army to reclaim our birthright!

Being a Merchant Prince would be a step up from a Beggar King.
>>
Full disclosure for the sake of long term planning
You are not going to be even close to invading Westeros until the War of the Five Kings is in full swing, probably not until after it loses some of the Kings even. The most sensible long-term thing to plan is how to build up a relevant enough force/powerbase/influence in Essos that you can later leverage when the opportunity arises
>>
>>2203128
>Place the Swordsmen and Axemen in the centre of your line, trying to breach the enemy centre. Your flanks will get surrounded thanks to the greater length of their line, have the Cavalry respond accordingly and fortify whichever flank is in greater need of aid to hold and help finish off the broken enemy formation once the enemy centre runs.

If all the enemy is is spearmen, could we slow their advance by sending horse to threaten to charge their flanks, but to stay away from any engagements? Fearing that our horse might fall upon their flanks at any moment their advance might well be supremely hesitant - and in an ideal situation they'd even break off some of their troops to chase futilely after our faster mounted troops and our ranged advantage could be employed for longer and to greater effect while they're in relative chaos.
>>
>>2203231
Problem I see is the difficulty is getting a foothold in the merchant game. The other merchant lords have way more resources to out compete with us, and we don't even have anything to sell.
We don't have any other choice but to slowly build the mercenary company, unless we get some amazing opportunity that involves some lord giving us an army in exchange for something.
>>
>>2203270
Really just anything that isn't "charge into the spears" would have my vote. We have range, we have mobility. We don't have to wade into the spears. We can lengthen and threaten their flanks, force them to circle and then they're surrounded, rather than have them flanking our line on width.
>>
>>2203228
>>2203285
relax, our archers are going to be firing up until we engage
>>
>>2203291
But then their ability is to impact the battle is reduced as we're stuck in. If we force them to schiltron they can keep firing and have even better targets. Then when they're spread out, charge in the heavy spearbreaking units and they're all but dead.
>>
>>2203284
Our blood may still count for something in Volantis. And while we probably wouldn't be wise to head many ventures on our own to start out, we could always seek out a partner of sorts, perhaps someone who's looking for a joint investor and some extra security on their caravans, maybe someone whose house is well established but poverty-stricken. If only we knew someone like that.

Hmm.

What we need is those dragons. Then we can easily go field of a couple times and seize power in leaps and bounds. Which means making enough waves to attract Illyrio, or Varys.

Are you talking about the trap wizard?
>>
>>2203335
go fast enough and they don't have time to circle up. Then they take a cavalry charge up the rear, Squad morale broken, morale loss due to allies fleeing, and the entire thing turns to a rout.
>>
>>2203335
Won't they try to form a triangle?

And I believe there are limits to how many shots our range units have.
>>
>>2203354
Even then, the concept is the same. They have less men on the frontline making the assault more likely to succeed.

And meanwhile, they have men with their backs exposed to the archers the whole while.
>>
Wait, we've only accounted for half of their number. 5 deep by 100 long is 500. They should have 1000.
>>
>>2203383
But they could let the center collapse and then envelope our forces can't they? We would probably tell the Calvary to charge but they'd still have some spears pointed at them, abet probably a thinner line.

Shouldn't the archers (crossbowmen?) be firing at the front line to help our Infantry about to engage?

And what about potential traps?

Fighting an enemy in the middle and surrounding you is literally a nightmare for spear units. See Battle fo the Bastards.

Their greatest strength for them is a wall as wide and deep as it can be. Take that away, force them from how they want to fight, and that's taking their strength.

Traps? As we're pelting them from distance? If reinforcements come, the cavalry are already in position to impede or prevent them linking up.

Devils advocate for a moment, appeal to simplicity.

We're in a vaguely tenuous command of disunited sellswords. If they were all ours and all well trained we could expect execution on point.

But, we have little guarantees on the rest. Get in a line and March forward, while simple and maybe a touch bloody, is hard to fuck up.
>>
This isn't so complicated, folks. They're sellswords with tenuous allegiances and one of their captains has a questionable opinion of us.

Iron hammer guy's infantry front and center with a loyal cavalry reserve at their rear. Our heavier infantry on the flanks. Don't give battle until we've really pelted the shit out of them. Keep a reserve of cavalry behind the center and extend our line to meet their depleted ranks after a missile attack. Move the other regiment of cavalry to collapse their left flank and roll the line up. Use the cavalry reserve in the center to bolster any breaches in the line. This isn't a complicated battle and they have literally only spearmen.
>>
>>2203760
I like this
>>
>>2203922
It just seems silly to commit any of our cavalry or infantry. They have no missile troops. Spear infantry can't surprise us. Keep our distance and pelt them. Keep cavalry in reserve to rout them. If they want to give battle, they'll lose. It does highlight our future need to recruit Westerosi Knights.

Most houses in Westeros have heavy cavalry knights and then a mix of levy swords and pikemen. We need to develop a strong archer sentiment and a strong contingent of knights.
>>
>>2203128
>>Place the Swordsmen and Axemen in the centre of your line, trying to breach the enemy centre. Your flanks will get surrounded thanks to the greater length of their line, have the Cavalry respond accordingly and fortify whichever flank is in greater need of aid to hold and help finish off the broken enemy formation once the enemy centre runs.
With the addition of deploying our main force at a fair distance with the crossbowmen forward but still close to max range.
Enemy has to advance or be slowly picked off so this maximises their time under fire.
When enemy is close our crossbows pull back and to the side, still pouring fire. Enemy can't engage them without opening their flank to the main force so they just have to take it.
Once they're pinned against our infantry the cav ride out from behind our main force and hit them in the opposite flnk to the crossbow
>>
>>2204105
This is probably a stupid idea, but I'm going to float the idea of killing the other captains and merging the sellsword army. Kill them, prove our command abilitity, then triple the size of our "army." Then offer the sellswords in the opposing army some of our loot and recruit them as well.
>>
>>2204106
Why would you engage a spear line that has no archers? It's a needless loss.
>>
>>2204106
What if their ranks reform on the flanks? It'll be very deadly to cavalry. Even small pockets of spears can do damage to cavalry. Better we use attrition. Sellswords don't like losing men. Bad for business.
>>
>>2204131
Probably not enough arrows or bolts to kill them all, so either we pelt them from afar and they attack, or they take barrage then brace for us to attack after softening them up. Works for us either way.
>>
>>2204149
We're not looking for a win just from missile troops. But their lack of mobility helps us, right? No harm in just picking as many off as we can.
>>
>>2204106

Basically this >>2203383 but with the crossbow all kept to one side in the hope that they'll form up in more of an L than a triangle meaning evdn more DMG when our cav hook round and flank the noncrossbow side
>>
>>2204174
Why would they do that tho? Unless we hide our cavalry. I don't think we will get far relying or gambling on the enemy to fuck up, to win our battles.
>>
>>2204236
We don't even have to rely on it. SELLSWORDS.

Easy win by using combined arms. And our guy has a fairly high war stat, right?
>>
>>2204125
I'm not sure about doing that with all the captains. I could see us doing that with the Widowmakers, though.
>>
>>2204274
Fair point. Maybe focus on one group?
>>
>>2203345
Honestly, I'd rather avoid dragons. They're too powerful for fun in my opinion.

Seeking out the Tyrells for a marriage alliance with smirkfu and marrying off Dany powerful lord, perhaps not from Westeros even, would be ideal I think. But, enough meta.

>>2203128
C. Engage in the oldest and most noble of mercenary traditions, parlay with the opposing commander. Point out that our cavalry will route him and make great slaughter if given the chance, offer to fight it out for a time and allow him to retreat in order after some blood has been shed.
>>
>>2204125
Yeah, it'll be easy to pull that off with our band of highly skilled assassins, of course their men will hold the line when their commanders are dead for sure. And they'll all certainly vote us in as their commander afterwards.

they have to align against our main force or it’ll just rip through them
They have to align against the crossbows too or our ranged attack will decimate them

Mechanically, with the given options there wouldn't have been a warfare check since the tactics were much more simple, but there would have been unit combat checks. I was gonna go to sleep anyhow with that vote so it didn't waste time or anything.
It'll also impact flavour of the description and the views of people on your command.
>>

>>
>>2205647
Can we burn him in exchange for more than a marginal success? Yellow is a stupid color anyway.
>>
>>2205649
To mention, not all marginal successes are the same. A marginal success of cavalry at spears means you win, but your horses are mostly gutted. A marginal success at avoiding unneccessary casualties means you take fewer casualties than you would have.
>>
It’s not a particularly challenging battle, but it is your first command and you are not going to leave the result to the mindless hacking, slashing, and pushing of even shieldwalls and the occasional frontal cavalry charge. You will not have that. Instead, you devise a far more cunning plan.

You have the Stormcrows only threaten a charge at their flanks during their advance, but never commit. The goal is to have their line shorten by them forming a triangle to protect their back against a potential, crushing, flanking charge. Your orders are communicated clearly and the Stormcrows are capable soldiers so the plans works exactly as you planned for it to.

This change of shape forces the Company of the Cat to thin their ranks and this combined with constant projectile assault from your marksmen makes their line almost ready to break once they once reach your own.

The following melee is not any less decisive. The heavy swordsmen and axemen placed in your centre make short work of the trembling line, and within minutes the centre of their triangle is routing. In the next moment the heavy cavalry of the Stormcrows breaches the waning left wall of the triangle with a single charge and this fuels an overall rout. Your archers and then your pursuing light cavalry make quick work of the routing men. Some are permitted surrender, but others fall to satisfy the bloodlust of the horsemen.

The day is yours!

You give the fighting men their pick of the field and camp, as is custom, and what negligible amount falls to you in the looting of inventory is just to enough to cover the few casualties you suffered in your spearwall by recruiting some of the surrendered foes.

Only after the rush and adrenaline of the battle leaves you do you notice that the whole thing was observed from a nearby hill by a sizable gathering of people, most likely the slaves from the plantation and the commoners from a nearby village. It seems the spilled blood of fighting men benefits not the purses of the rich, but as well the bored minds of the poor.

After giving your men three days of rest and celebration, you relinquish your battle command and the Free Companies begin their march back to Myr.
>>
The journey back to Myr is again an uneventful march beyond the Iron Hammers captain treating you to a night of drinking and Cyvasse in his tent as a show of his appreciation for the well-executed tactic. Even the Walrus and the Widowmaker seem less dismissive of your warfare study background after the battle.

The situation in front of the city gates is flux and chaos, the war is in full swing and so companies are routed, shattered, and broken daily. The survivors, either alone, or in bands, make it back to the city walls and look for new work amongst the more successful bands or, at least those that blame the recent losses on incompetent command, start their own Companies with their fellow downtrodden soldiers.

The Golden Company is still gone, the word is that it is some 200 miles from Tyrosh in a standstill against five other mercenary armies hired by Free City. The Second Sons have been dwindled to but one hundred men, but they once again have enough communal wealth to recruit and rebuild. Apparently the Winged Men, a mercenary band of some two thousand men, switched sides and now fights for Tyrosh.

Another interesting rumour is that Lys is preparing to join the war. It’s still a mystery on which side the Perfumed Sister shall stand, but mercenary camps are gathering at the banks of the Lysene mainland port which connect the island city to the the Disputed Lands.

Also, A Khalasar has apparently reached Pentos and the magisters organized a great gift giving ceremony in front of the city gates, the magisters of Myr are praying that the barbarian horde doesn’t decide to wander south on their way back east, as much for a dislike of giving bribes, as for fear that some of the mercenaries will provoke needless conflict.

You, alongside the other Captains, deliver the broken standards of the Company of the Cat, as well as signed and sealed confirmation from the Latifundium overseer that you have done your job to a representative of your Cyvasse loving employer and you are each given a promissory note that you later have Holt in company of Roggo and a dozen soldiers have paid out at a branch of the Iron Bank of Bravos.

More work doesn’t show up immediately upon your arrival, so you decide to instead invest several days and the and resources you have accumulated into recruiting some of the available men to bolster your own force.(see following post.)

It would have been an uneventful time, however as Innodos and Holt were going over the technicalities and details of recruitment you were approach by a messenger. It’s a young, orphan, boy that simply says that you are invited for a private meeting at the Purple Pearls, a high class brothel and drinking place, on the next evening, and that you are best to come alone.

Intrigued by the invitation you decide to go, but you heed the instructions?

>Yes, what’s the worst thing that could happen.

>No, take Roggo with you.

>No, take Alys with you.

Choose 1 unit to recruit, see image for an abstraction of roughly what their battlefield purpose is. The abstraction will gradually grow, change, and, hopefully, improve.

>Spearmen. The most common type of a unit. The shielded spearman has been the standard of warfare for centuries. Armored in padded clothing[50]

>Axemen. Wearing mail with padding underneath these men use their shields and the momentum of their axes to wreak havoc in close quarters. [150]

>Swordmen. Though every sellsword has his sword ready as a sidearm these men are skilled and brave enough to use the weapon to its full potential in a unified formation. They wear heavy plated mail and carry large shields. [200]

>Polearms. These brave, or foolish, men clad in padding and mail abandon the shield in favour of greater reach and the ability to better endure the wrath of cavalry. They are armed with an assortment of halberds and other polearms* [150]

>Archers. Light Padding. Arrows. [100]

>Crossbow. Light Padding, and armour piercing bolts. [150]

>Light Cavalry. Armed with spears and an assortment of sidearms these somewhat lightly armored men ride fast warhorses and make way along the battlefield as they please. [300]

>Heavy Cavalry. Wearing either plated mail or halfplate over plate coats and padding, and bearing sturdy spears and individually every sidearm from a sword to a mace, these men on their heavy warhorses are only a step below the unstoppable Westerosi knights clad in full plate. [450]

Additionally, choose any one of the following actions:
>Reform** your Spearmen into a Light Cavalry unit [250]
>Reform your Spearmen into a Swordsmen unit [150]
>Reform your Spearmen into an Axemen unit [100]
>Keep the Spearmen nigga

*(they are not really pikemen proper)
**help buy equipment for some, disband and replace others

Your total Gold at this time is 765. Assume that salaries and upkeep details are automatically substracted from your pay in the future . More expensive units also have more expensive upkeep that I will not just randomly eyeball. Attrition and mild casualties are hand-waved away as balanced out by irregular recruitment of people who offer themselves up for joining.

Our company works better if we build up an elite core that we work off of. Heavy cav is too much of an investment yet though. Also, we are a good enough fighter to be reasonably safe, and any secret meeting works best if its entered with trust.
However, if we could have Roggo happen to visit the same brothel, a minute after we arrive, that wouldn't be bad.
We are a decent fighter,

We need some cavalry for flanking purposes or counter-cav. If we ever go into a battle where we don't have an ally with them but the enemy does, we will really feel it.

Axeman are just a flat upgrade of spearmen pretty much. We should get two units of pikemen for our flanks next and then we'll be good.

They are the bread and butter because they are cheap but we don't have the option of buying more than one unit. Right now we want quality over quantity and for that, look at the upgrade chart. A axeman in game mechanics is just a more armored spearmen unit who is really fucking good at fighting other infantry. If we want a solid core line that is good for holding, fuck off with the spearmen and get some axemen.

Seriously axemen are op in this system, when we get to westeros, we should have a kings-guard of axeman instead of the sworn knights, go for more of a Varengian guard system instead of the lifetime club of political knights who fucked the dynasty over a few times.
Unaware hillmen, foreign mercs, dumb peasants, bored ironborn and desperate wildlings will make a better guard than 7 tossers connected to larger houses if they only have 5 years to get connected in politics

Go alone and take needless risk to your life? You are not stupid. Take Roggo with you and risk having someone consider it an insult? You are not stupid. You have the Dothraki join you, but some five minutes behind. You tell him in which room your meeting is arranged and tell him to keep an eye and ear out during his whoring in case you have any need of him.

The pillow house is a large, square building. The walls are lined with doors that lead to private rooms and the centre of the first floor is an open clearing with a fountain, couches and satin pillows strewn along the soft carpet floor., amongst which whores mingle with patrons who have yet undecided which one they wish to take to a more private area. The draperies and decorations of the place follow a blue-purple scheme and the area is dimly lit at best. Several naked women are playing harps and flutes in slow, seducing melodies.

Immediately as you enter you are greeted by a woman in a long, blue robe, who begins to give you the usual whorehouse salespitch. You silence her and simply tell her the room number you have been given. She smiles demurely, bows, and directs you upstairs.

The second floor is much like the first with rooms lining the walls, however it only has emptiness in the centre, allowing the atmosphere and gathering on the first floor to be observed from the railing protected side floors.

You make your way towards the given room and you hear a collection of moans, screams, and cries from the other rooms as you pass them.

Once you find your own door you give it a knock. “Who’s there?”
“The man you invited.”
“Come in”

Inside the room you see a tall, and slender, but muscular man. He is of darker complexion and has a lined face, thin eyebrows, and a sharp nose. He is beardless, and his hair is rich and black. The man is sitting behind a table on which a sealed parchment lies.

He stands up and bows after taking a short, piercing, look at you when you enter the room. “Your Grace, please sit.” He gestures towards the empty chair on the opposite end of the table. “There is much for us to discuss.”

“Perhaps there is,” You nod as you seat yourself and glance at the parchment on the table. “but you have me at a disadvantage, who are you?”

“Oberyn Martell, the Prince of Dorne.”

To be continued …

Here's my take on how i would do unit combat with the units available, giving every unit a clear purpose on the battlefield.

My list.

Spears: Strong anti cavalry. Realistically would have a strong anti melee wall until formation is breached, but i don't know if you want to complicate things that far. Otherwise the weakest unit against infantry. Default strength against arrows.

Axes: Strong anti infantry. They are relatively cheap and either come out on top or at least go toe to toe with any other infantry unit. Default against arrows. The most susceptible melee unit to cavalry.

Swords: Strong anti ranged unit. Swordsmen have heavy armor coupled with thick shields which make arrow volleys largely ineffective. In addition they are competent at going against any other melee unit. Susceptible to cavalry.

Polearms. The most expensive Infantry unit. Not only do they have a bonus against cavalry, but they do well against all other melee units. Since polearms require both hands to wield, using a shield is impossible and so polearm units take extra casualties from archers.

Archers: effective against all units except swordsmen, and especially effective against polearms. Long effective range.

Crossbowmen: More effective against all units than archers, and are effective against swordsmen. Shorter range and more expensive than archers.

Light Cav: Very fast and good for flanking maneuvers. Absolutely scythes through axes and does well against swords. Good for pursuing fleeing enemies or closing the distance. Weak against spears and polearms set to receive them. Expensive.

Heavy Cav. Harder to kill and even more devastating than light cavalry, while retaining all the same benefits. Most expensive unit in the game.

If you liked you could allow an *Elite* status where a particularly well trained unit could have an additional bonus, allowing distinguished veterans to have an advantage over those of more average skill.
Furthermore, spending money on special equipment for units could give them bonuses, such as tower shields for shields, universally improving their defense against all units, or giving a higher grade of armor to a regularly armored unit.

These are just some of my thoughts, if you like some of them feel free to use them or discard them. Good, adventurous quest so far Elasto, keep it up!
>>
>>2214822
It might be a bit more clever to tie battlefield performance an bonuses and the like to weapons.

A man holding just a sword and a man holding a spear are just as vulnerable to archers, but giving them each a shield makes them more defended.

But instead of making a dozen variants of infantry types, just presume the base of dude+weapon, then denote if you want to give them a shield (if they can). Throw in a trade off that this reduces their attack though. You could do roughly the same thing for mounts.

So, you can mix and match bonuses/negatives without having to balance a score of different unit types. It let's
>>
>>2214822
most of these are in line what what I had in mind

tho I'm thinking of just deleting polearms because going the late medieval pike square style without any sort of gunpowder anywhere triggers me beyond measure and it honestly wouldn't feel right for me in the setting anyhow

so I'm thinking of leaning more towards the earlier cav and shieldwall dominated aesthetic

I'll say that while polearms really can't function like tercios or pike and shot they certainly have a place as the absolute ass kicker of melee arms up until that point.
