“A stalker? You’re talking about yourself, right?” you say.

You are Katsuya Nekoyo, a student of Tetsuyashi Academy of the Psionic Arts, and you are currently in a conversation that you do not want to be in. Specifically, one where you’re being coerced into being involved in a situation you really want nothing to do with.

“I’m not a stalker, and I wasn’t talking about myself!” Yukikata quickly retorts. “...He’s blackmailing Shiba.”

You quickly recall the shady encounter a while ago where you and Yami followed Yukikata, only to find that she was following Shiba talking to someone else.

“Wow, scandalous.” You try to hide your lack of enthusiasm. “What does it have to do with me?”

“Do you know about... that?”

That?”

Yukikata looks around suspiciously for a moment before motion for you two to leave the building. It’s at this point you realize nothing good will come of this. You oblige, and when nobody is nearby, she says, “You know who she is... right?”

You toss out a dumbfounded look for a moment. “Oh right, she’s that idol—"

“Quiet!” Yukikata cuts you off. Her eyes dart around, wary as ever.

You say, ”You don’t want her to find a boyfriend, is that it?”

“That has nothing to do with this!”

Even if you were off the mark, it looks like you hit something... weird. You completely disregard it as you say, “Sure, so what is it, juicy pictures? That’s like the second most scandalous thing that could happen to an idol, or is it drugs?”

“Nekoyo... what kind of person do you think Shiba even is?” Yukikata gives you a disgusted look. “There’s no way there’d be any of that.”

Shiba’s... loud, brash, and came very close to actually breaking your bones on multiple occasions. Ah, yes, truly all the hallmarks of a good idol.

You reply, “Look, I don’t know. Are you going to tell me what this is about or not?”

“I already told you... it’s about her being an idol. You saw them talking earlier, right?” She answers.

Blankly staring off into the distance, you let the pieces slide into place. It’s about her being an idol who hides her face, and that person who has “blackmail” was apparently talking to her, meaning he knows who she is. You give it a few more seconds before asking, “...Okay? What’s the big deal?”

“Rori’s hides her identity for a reason...! Think about all those stalkers and creeps... and she’s still in high school. Some of them wouldn’t even stop!”

“So you want me to dispose of him. I got it.”

“...That would be preferred, but I doubt we can get away with it...”

“I was joking! It was a joke!” you say in attempt to shoo away that thought. When she says nothing, you almost start panicking. You take a small step back and stare at her dismissively, “Anyway, whatever you’re planning, you're going to have to come up with a very good reason for me to care about any of this."

Yukikata’s frustration shows on her face in response. “...How about a favor with the student council? I think... I can arrange something of that sort.” She’s just throwing her weight around, isn’t she? “Don’t worry, I won’t have you doing any disposing... I just want you to find blackmail on him.”

A favor could be useful.

You pause, wincing at the thought of what you’re about to do. Ignoring your trepidation, you open your mouth and say, “I really don’t want to, but alright. I’ll help Shiba out.”

Yukikata expression softens, and she almost smiles. “Thank you. I see you’re not as bad of a person as you look.”

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?!” you say. You turn your face away from her, tugging on the bangs of your hair. You don’t have dead fish eyes at all! There’s no way you look like some kind of punk, do you? No, no, no. that’s just impossible.

“His name is... Kaisuke Dou.”

That name is sort of familiar. You think you’ve seen him a few times in class 1A, the same class that Usagi is in. You don’t think you’ve ever talked to him though. You say, “You want to blackmail the blackmailer? Are you sure? They probably won't take kindly to that, they might even out Shiba out of spite.”

“All you have to do is find something that would destroy him more than he can with Rori,” Yukikata says, “So much so that he can’t possibly think of letting you ruin his name... that kind of blackmail.”

“Wow, what kind of dirt do you think high-schoolers even have?” you say questioningly.

“It’s guaranteed, especially with that sort of person,” she blankly replies. You opt to not question her line of thinking. If you fail, you can always say you did your best. “Good luck, Nekoyo. I’ll be going... I’m late for class. Oh, and don’t tell Rori about what you’re doing... she’s not the one to accept help.”

“Ah, wait! How am I supposed to start?”

Your words don’t reach her as she walks away.

You groan as you flex your thinking muscles.
>Clearly you should stalk this Kaisuke guy.

Usagi is some weird super fan of that idol group Shiba's in. Sirens, was it? If you tell her about this, she'll probably help out! Definitely. Maybe. She's also the class representative for 1A so she'll be able to get you near Kaisuke. Nodding to yourself, you go around, searching for her.

After half an hour, you scratch your head at where she could possibly be. She isn’t eating lunch like everyone else, nor is she in the Class 1A room. You walk around for a while longer before you spot her in the teacher’s room. There’s two teachers in there for a grade higher than you, and then you spot Usagi off to the side, hunched over a desk.

One of them raises his head, and you just point at Usagi. He promptly turns his attention away from you and back to whatever work he’s doing.

You walk over to the preoccupied Usagi, and for a second you spot her tracing her finger across a sheet of paper while she holds a stack of other sheets in her other hand.

“Usagi?” you say.

“Eh?” She snaps her head up. There’s a flash of nervousness on her face before it’s quickly wiped away. “Kats, what’s up?”

“I was looking for you,” you say, “What are you doing?”

With a blank expression, she replies, “I was dropping off homework.” Usagi then puts them down, on cue as if you had reminded her. She starts walking away, ushering you to follow her. On her way out, she casually puts back a room key back on the hooks.

You stand outside, thinking as Usagi waits. You thought you saw her eyes were lit up with psi back then. Where you just seeing things? After a moment, Usagi says, “Uh, you said you were looking for me?”

“Oh,” you say, snapping out of it. Quickly, you explain the situation to her.

“Ah, that’s right! Shiba is Reina,” she mumbles. Her eyes open wide, “That was a shock! I knew she was around my age, but I didn’t know she went to our school.”

“Right. Do you have any ideas?”

“Well, there’s a weekly meeting for wotas who are fans of Sirens. Haha, what am I saying? They’re all fans of Sirens.”

“The wo-what now?”

“Uh, Idol fans. Nevermind. Um, I could bring you there and introduce you, if you want.”

What an offer.

You say, “You... have no problems with this blackmailing thing?”

“Nope, why?” she says, “I’m all for an eye for an eye. And a jab—” Usagi suddenly pokes your side with a hand before you can react. “—with a jab!”

You flinch and grab your torso as you distance yourself from this menace. “What was that for?”

“Don’t sneak up on me like that!” she says, frowning. “Next time, I won’t let you go that easily.”

You frown yourself. “So, what were you really doing with all those papers and that key?” You think that key was for a room with all the art supplies in it, but you don’t remember exactly. The homework did look different than whatever she was looking at.

“I told you, I was dropping off the homework,” she replies. She looks at you, and when her brow furrows at your staring back, her eyes move away. “I was also returning the key since the art teacher asked me to. She was busy, so I wanted to help out.”

...Yukikata was right, wasn’t she?! Maybe you do have dead fish eyes. No, it’s the haircut! You need to do something about this, before you start giving people the wrong idea. Glancing at Usagi, you decide to let this slide for now, since she has no intention of letting you pry. You say, “Alright, never mind that.” If it is what she says it is, then there’s no problem... right? “Usagi!” you say, quelling those thoughts, “I need your help.”

She looks at you for a moment. “Do I want to know? That look on your face...”

“Help me investigate Kaisuke with me,” you say, prepared to add in that she has responsibilities over her classmates.

“...Sure...?” Maybe it’s unneeded. “What are you thinking of?”

You pause for a moment, unsure. How to continue. Oh you know, some light stalking? No. No, that’s not happening.

“I’ll just talk to him during the meeting this week, then,” Usagi says. “I’ve never really talked to him, since he was always brooding.”

“Brooding...?” you trail off.

“Kats, what are you going to do?”

You must... become a stalker. You vow to never let Haru or Kaori find out about this, ever, because you’d rather die. Casting away your shame momentarily, you decide that helping Shiba out without her knowledge is a task that is worth its cost. Not that the favor isn’t also good. Actually, the more you think about it, the worse this gets; you should stop.

“That bush suit... You’re an expert, right? I need some tips.” You faintly recall that incredible attack that saved you from the intoxicated Kaori. If only you can do that...! No wait, is that something to be jealous of in the first place?

“Bush suit...?” Usagi shudders. “For some reason, I’m getting the feeling you’re thinking something terrible. Okay, you just want to know how to get into a role, right? You’d probably have a hard time connecting to him just like this...”

You mutter, “...Huh? Yeah, let’s go with that.”

“Hehehe, you picked the right person to ask! You may not know it, but I’m part of a theater troupe!”

“Oh, is that why you have all those costumes?”

“Yup! I’m a costume designer, but I get into acting too,” she says, “Listen, the most important part is to get into it! If you can’t understand the character you’re playing, there’s no way you’ll do the best you can.” Is that... right? You mentally take notes. “A costume helps a lot. When you’re dressed like someone, you feel that way too!”

“I see...”

“But the most important thing is... love!”

“...Love?”

“You have to love what you’re doing, and the idea of playing your role! It’s a bit hard to explain, but you can’t fake passion, you know?”

Just as you’re about to say something, the bell rings. The two of you go back to your classes, leaving you to plan.

Now the question is, where and when is it good to start collecting blackmail?
>Now’s a good time as ever.

Love and costumes?

Is that what you need? What does it mean to understand... stalking?

Love... and costumes...

There’s too many stalkers around you. Are you sure you haven’t been attending Stalker Academy for the Stalking Arts the entire time? You’re not going to drop any names, even though you’re sure there’s too many for one hand to count.

Love... costumes...

No, you have to look from somewhere else. Something that is the epitome of stealth, of sneakiness. You close your eyes, and you meditate after classes end.

A lightbulb goes off inside your head, and you run to your closet. As if you were in a trance, time flies endlessly before you hear the door click open. It’s Kaori. You become a gliding shade, sliding from wall to wall while clad in black. She turns on the lights, but it’s too late; you have already slipped into the balcony! You watch as she enters the living room. She calls out, “Katsuya, are you there?” You’re not. You’re already slipped past her while she checks your bedroom. You are gone like the wind. You’d have a trail of smoke behind you using Shadewalk, but you are not too excited about getting arrested after triggering in a psi detection field anytime soon.

The empty streets are no match for you. Even the odd passerby can’t see this perfect form of invisibility of wearing a black hoodie with black gloves and covering your face with a dark scarf. You had to make do since your Illusion isn’t strong enough.

Out of the corner of your eye, you see it. You weren’t expecting it at all, but you got lucky—Kaisuke Dou enters an arcade. You pull your scarf down.

You can’t back now, you must follow him in!

You step out of the alleyway, and you are surprised by a couple walking down the street. They almost collide with you, but they step back just in time. You try to back off too, but your momentum is too great. Your legs cross over each other and proceed to fall on the pavement. Feeling a couple of stares going your way, you pull your scarf back to normal human position and get up.

You walk away, patting the dust off of your clothes while your face is red. Entering the arcade, you see Kaisuke right in front of you exchanging bills.

He says, “...Katsuya, is that you?”

“H-huh? Uh, yeah, hey Kaisuke. Funny running into you here.”

“Yeah...” he says, adjusting his glasses. “Hey, isn’t it hot? It’s summer, right?”

You shake your head and raise a hand, fumbling. “Uh, I got a cold or something. I’ve been coming down with the chills.” You loosen the scarf a lttle.

“Hm. Well, it’s good to see you again. Why did you change classes, anyways?”

“Student Council stuff, you know how it is,” you say.

“...That explains it.” He turns and starts to walk away, leaving you unnerved at how easily he just accepted that.

If you could die from embarrassment, you would be dead.

It’s too late now. You’ll have to commit.

You follow him, feeling the great blessing of the arcade air conditioning. You also try to strike up a conversation. “You come here often?”

“No,” he bluntly replies, “I’m checking this one out. The one that’s normally near my house got taken over these delinquents. They’re loud and a pain in the ass.” You watch as he walks up to a Yubeat Saucer rhythm game machine and pass right by it to play a shooter game instead. “Also, this place has the original K1 ATO Shooter, while the one I used to go to only had Ryuuji’s Dark Portal.” He slides in coins and grabs a gun.

You glance at the cabinet a good distance behind you. You say, “Huh. Personally, I’m a fan of Yubeat. They’ve got some pretty good songs on there.” Unsure whether or not that was the least smooth line in existence, you are thankful that Kaisuke can’t see your face.

He replies, “I’m not that into pop music. They all sound the same to me.” He starts blasting giant chickens in game left and right, not missing a single shot. You can feel his experience oozing out of his playstyle.

“Oh, come on, they don’t all sound the same. You ever heard of that really popular idol group, Sirens?”

“Yeah,” Kaisuke pauses for a moment as he looks back at you briefly. “I hate them.” Just like that, he goes back at his game. “There’s two-player on this game, you know.”

“Sure.” Just as you’re reaching in your pocket, Kaisuke tosses you some coins. You catch them and slide them in. “Oh, thanks.”

When you pull out the other gun, you notice that he had already restarted the game. You also notice that your gun is... different. It’s much pinker, and unrestrained. You don’t question it.

The giant chickens start coming into view again, and you start aiming. Every time you pull the trigger, however, you find that the controls are absolutely awful. Maybe it’s because you’re not used to it, but you are doing terrible.

“Wow, you are doing terrible,” Kaisuke proceeds to echo.

“It’s not me, it’s this gun! Why do I have to press down so hard just to fire? I can’t control my aim like this.”

“Even if you skip leg day, you can’t skip hand day.”

“How are you doing this so easily?!” you say, looking over. His eyes are a deep amber, not glowing cyan. He’s not even cheating. You frown and try your best to keep up. While you fail miserably, you say, “Honestly, I don’t like the Sirens either. It’s just that I have a friend who’s really into them.”

“They’re so loud about it, aren’t they?”

You purse your lips. You need to push for something. “I just threw it out because I thought you liked them. She said that she saw you before in some fan meeting.”

Through the glint in his glasses, his eyes visibly narrow. He says nothing as he continues playing the game. You follow, and when the stage is cleared, Kaisuke says, “My sister’s a big fan of them. I gotta do what I gotta do.”

Do what... exactly?

“Yeah, I get it.” You look at him. He doesn’t seem like the type of person to do anything rash, or aggressive, does he? When you look at the screen again, you find that you’ve managed to lose the game for both of you. “Ah, crap. Sorry about that.”

“It’s fine,” he says, “You’ll get better. Probably.”

You look at him. “I should go; it’s getting late. Thanks for the game.”

“Later,” Kaisuke says, going back to the game.

You walk out, and it's dark.

You are Yuu Saki.

You blankly stare at your phone, tired. You went to sleep early yesterday, but you still feel the same. Scrolling down the endless feed of regurgitated picture after picture, you eventually stop, realizing that you were just waiting for a RAIN notification from no one in particular. How boring.

You wonder how Kururi is doing. Her dog is cuddly. You make a note to ask if you can drop by sometimes, to study or something. Your finger taps on your phone, idle. After a long minute, you toss it on your bed and get up.

Standing up, you stare at yourself in your full-length mirror. Your hair is a complete mess, your pajamas are all wrinkled, and your face looks like you pulled an all-nighter. Taking a deep breath, you put your hands on your hips as you exhale.

Come on, Yuu! You actually have things to do today, something a little different.

You brush your teeth, take a shower, clean yourself up, and put on your school uniform. You stuff a traditional festivity coat into your bag. You don’t need books today. Today is a fun day.

When you walk out the door, the sun is almost blindingly bright. You live close enough that you don’t need to dorm, so you choose not to. You pick up some sandwiches from a convenience store for a quick breakfast to eat as you walk.

You reach the A1 classroom particularly early. You set your bags down, and you jump onto a desk and sit down on top of it.

You said you were going to try and get close to Kaisuke during the meeting, but that didn’t mean you couldn’t do it now too. Waiting is unbearable.

Katsuya told you some story that sounds pretty far out there, but that’s alright. You’ll go along with it. It’s interesting, after all.

Your psi flares as you run your finger across the length of the table, pulling and splitting the top of the wood from the rest of the desk. You draw a little heart, and you stare at it a little before setting it back into place.

Kaisuke Dou, right?

You need a point of attack.

His schoolwork.

You could probably use that as a conversation starter. Smiling to yourself, you get off the desk and start cleaning the blackboard.

...

When Kaisuke enters the classroom for homeroom, you wait for him to get to his desk before walking up to him. With a paper in hand, you call him.

“Huh?” He looks up, annoyed. “What is it now?”

You drop the paper on his desk. “You never filled out your career survey,” you say. Grumbling, he pulls out a pen and scribbles NEET on the occupation space and some other unreadable mess on the other lines. “Being a NEET is not a job. Come on, put a little effort into it.”

He stares at you, ticked off. “I did it. Just hand it.”

“You don’t want to talk to the guidance counsellor, do you?” you say, “She’s not going to be happy when she sees this.”

“Tch. I’ll deal with it when it happens.”

So frustrating.

Your eyes quickly glance off to the side, careful to make sure no one overhears. “Is everything alright?”

“...” He pauses, and then adjusts his glasses. “What do you mean?”

“It’s my job to notice. I’m the class president, after all.” You puff your chest up in pride, even if you didn’t deserve it. “You seem down lately.”

“And what of it? It’s none of your business.” His eyes narrow into daggers.

“It is my business if it affects your schoolwork,” you say. You don’t know if that’s true or not, however—if it sounds good, then it is good!

“My problems will be over in less than a week,” he says, looking away, “You don’t have to worry about me.”

“...A week...?” you say.

Right there and then, Ms. Masu strolls into the room, signaling the start of homeroom. You let his words sit in your mind as you greet her. Handing in the survey, you think about the deadline that he’s given you. You never expected the time to be so constraint.

The limited time means this idol fan meeting is the only chance you’ll get. That’s fine. Completely, absolutely, perfectly fine! After all, it only means it’s more interesting.

To think this was the sort of thing Katsuya was doing without you. How could he be so cold?

Imagine all the fun that you had missed out on.

The café is filled with noisy murmurs, much like the streets outside.

“What?!” you say, practically leaping out of your seat. If you were any louder, you would’ve been kicked out. “What do you mean they’re disbanding?”

“It’s just a rumor, relax,” your friend Fran says, “You missed all of us panicking and then getting over it when we realize it obviously wasn’t true.”

The thought of Sirens breaking up is absolutely crushing. Obviously, it wouldn’t be true. There’s no way, after all!

“I couldn’t help it, school ends late for me,” you reply, “Where did you hear this?”

Another person, Rentaro, replies, “Some nosy assistant or something. Probably got jealous and wanted to start something. Damn bastard! If I ever find the guy, I’ll staple his mouth shut!”

Fran shakes her head. “Rumors are rumors. It’s too ridiculous to even think about. I mean, they practically just started!”

Is it? Is it really? Worried, you start staring at your phone. It’s not a complete impossibility. You look around and see that everyone else doesn’t seem to be bothered at the “news” at all, having accepted the fact that it would never happen.

What bothers you the most of all is that Kaisuke isn’t here at the meetup today.

“Hey, hey, have you heard? They’re releasing a single with the legendary producer KyachiP.”
“What?!”
“Pfft, who cares?”
“He’s so ungrateful, you know?”
“But his compositions are amazing!”
“I thought she was a girl.”
“I like him too!”

As a conversation happens in the background, you see something out of the corner of your eye: Kaisuke. He’s standing right outside the glass doors, but no one seems to notice. You think that he’s about to leave.

You should do something.

“I’ll be right back,” you say, “Gonna to check something out.”

Fran replies, “’Kay. Yuu, did you bring an umbrella today? It looks like it’ll rain.”

“Shoot,” you say, “Ah, whatever, I’ll just use my bag.”

You walk out the café, seeing the clouds above. You’ll make it quick. Looking ahead, you see that Kaisuke has already long left and is making a turn. Besides the fact that he came all this way here only to have second thoughts, you realize he’s not even heading toward the train station. Ever so curious, you follow him from a distance, ready to hide in a store or behind another person if he ever looks behind him.

After a couple of streets, you realized he’s heading to a hospital. At this point, your walk slowly comes to a stop, and you wonder what you’re doing.

The distance between the two of you grows, until he disappears into the hospital. You sit down on a bench nearby.

Taking out your phone, you start to type a text message to Katsuya. You type and delete it, over and over again. Tapping your fingers on your phone, you shake your head.

This seems wrong.

You feel something cool hit your skin.

A single droplet of water, that’s then followed by another. Then another. Crap. You don’t want to get soaked.

You should move.

You head into the hospital anyways, feeling a little relief after you stop feeling the rain on your head. The lobby is remarkably clean, its tall ceiling making the place seem much more spacious than it should be. After a quick glance around, you see that Kaisuke is nowhere to be found.

Taking a deep breath, you renew your determination. Even if you have to disrespect his privacy, you have a job you said you’ll do. Therefore, you’ll give it all you got.

Although you can easily say that, actually doing it is much harder. Instead, you recall a faint scene fondly. Yamikigo’s expression that she wore all the time when she was against Yukikata...

It feels dirty to associate her with what you’re about to do, but you need all the help you can get. Filled with something akin to a false confidence, you stroll up to the patient information desk.

“Is there a ‘Dou’ that’s currently staying here?”

...

You walk up the steps, careful and wary. The door to the room you’re looking for is instantly visible, and it’s closed. Despite being a bundle of nerves, you walk up anyways, and peer in.

You see Kaisuke talking to someone inside. You can’t see who, and you can barely hear anything,

“...Surprise! I got you something,” Kaisuke says.

“...Who is this?”

“I got to talk to them for you. You said you want to see them again, right?”

“Uh huh, but...”

“It won’t happen like last time again, I promise you,” he says, “How are you feeling?”

“Better. The nurse said I can walk in a month!”

“That’s great!”

You walk away, questioning what you’re doing.

How can this be blackmail in any way?

Why are you looking for blackmail in your classmate, who you’re supposed to help?

How can someone like him—

“Saki.”

You practically jump as you hear Kaisuke call your name. Turning around, you find him having left the room and now looking at you.

You’re not quite sure what to say.

“Kaisuke,” you say, “Funny running into you here.”

“I could say the same.”

“I was...” you start to say. Visiting someone? Who? Who else could be here? All the possible names flash through your head. Katsuya? No, he’s not in here. He has a sister, doesn’t he? You saw her a couple times. You remember her room too! Ah, how lucky that she’s in the same hospital! No, that’s not something to be happy about! “...visiting a friend. I’m guessing you’re the same?”

“...I was checking up on my little sister. She’s going to be discharged soon,” he replies, almost smiling.

“Oh, do you know Haruko?” That’s her name, you think. ”She’s down the hall, and she likes talking a lot. I’d be surprised if your sister and Haruko didn’t know each other.”

“Your friend?” Kaisuke relaxes a little. “She’s a little too easygoing, but I’m thankful for her keeping Reimi company.” That’s her name, huh? You relax a little too when you realize he isn’t too suspicious anymore.

In that case, you suppose you can try for something. “You said she was going to be discharged soon, right? That’s great to hear! So that’s what your whole moody thing was about.” You say, lightly laughing. “I thought you were stalking someone or something.”

What small hint of a smile disappears on his face. “Why did you think that?”

You... shouldn’t implicate anyone else. “I... saw you around Shiba a lot. And since you were a Sirens fan...” You break eye contact.

“...How much do you know?” He pushes his glasses up.

“Nothing, I think?”

“...Follow me. I don’t want anyone to listen,” he says.

You follow him up the stairs.

You say, “Where are we going?”

He replies, “To the roof.”

“...Wouldn’t it be locked?”

“There’s no problem,” he says. “I’m only doing this because I trust you.”

“...Okay.” You grab the straps of your schoolbag and tighten your grip. Flight by flight, you make your way up behind him. “Are you... actually blackmailing someone?”

“Yes, you could say that. No, that’s exactly what it is,” he replies, “The ends will justify the means.”

“What do you mean?” you say. Eventually, you reach the very top, finding yourself somewhat out of breath. The door’s shut, obviously. Then, Kaisuke grabs the doorknob, and looks at you. A flash of cyan spills through his glasses, and the metal in his hands flies apart. Piece by piece, it’s disassembled by his psi until all that’s left is a pile of scrap on the ground. He pushes the door open and motions you to follow. “Wait, it’s raining.”

“A little rain won’t kill you,” he says.

You want to tell him to not make those kinds of jokes when you’re this on edge, but you keep your mouth shut. There’s a well-sized concrete roof, supported by pillars, looming over the entrance, acting as an awning of sorts. You step onto the roof, and the door behinds you shut. You stay away from the rain.

“Well,” you say, “What is it?”

“Do you remember their concerts?” Kaisuke asks.

“Yeah. We went as a group a couple of times.” He was there too.

“...Did you know they used their Arts? The Sirens were using it the entire time on their audiences.”

“...What? No way.”

“...” You don’t say anything. You wait for him to continue.

After a long pause, he accepts the fact that you aren’t going to answer him. “Your friend Haruko is like Reimi. They’re extremely susceptible to psi.”

“...Psykinesis,” you mutter. You’ve heard about this in a lesson one time. A direct connection to psi, one that’s stronger than any normal psion. The connection not only allows them to more freely manipulate it, but it also makes them more open to any effects. Because of this and the natural turbulence of the atmosphere, their average lifespans tend to be... not particularly long.

“I don’t know what their Arts are or what they did. All I know is what they did to Reimi,” he says. “I won’t forgive them.”

In a quiet voice, you repeat, “What they did...?”

“Forced her into a hospital for months,” he replies. “...Do you know what she wants most right now?”

Hesitant, you reply, “What?”

“To go to school and see her friends.” His fist tightens, and his knuckles whiten. “I’m not cruel. I won’t ruin them like that. I’ll give them a choice. Either they quit on their own, or I’ll make them.” How is that a choice at all?! “People like them don’t deserve to be in the spotlight. Cheaters and liars. They’re careless, using their Arts like that. They don’t mind if anyone gets hurt. The thought would never cross their mind.”

You bite your lip.

That’s...

Kaisuke reaches into his pocket and takes something out. It’s a phone, gaudy and full of stickers. He swipes a handful of times, and then brings it up to show you a picture of Nachi with Rori Shiba in the costume that Reina would wear as she tries to grab the phone. “Opening locked doors is surprisingly easy when you have a power like mine.”

“You... you’re planning on breaking them up?”

“...You’re right. They should be made to take responsibility for what they did,” you say. His expression brightens, as if you had said exactly what he wanted to hear. “But, that doesn’t mean you need to ruin their lives. Have you actually tried talking to any of them about this? You know, without breaking and entering.”

And his expression is gone. “You don’t think I’ve tried?! They refuse to believe it; they think I’m trying to scam them or something. By the time that Reimi made it to the hospital, all it looked like was that she had some kind of seizure.”

“You could try to get proof! Maybe you can get a doctor and... I don’t know,” you say, scrambling for something to say. “You can’t just do something like this! Why would you think blackmailing them would make them believe you?! Talk to them again! I’ll even come with you—”

“I can do this, and I will,” Kaisuke says. “After all this time, do you know what I’ve come to realize?”

You ask, “...What?”

“We’re gifted with these abilities, and we’re the ones who get to choose how to use them. We’re the ones who choose whether or not to help others or to help ourselves. If we can use it for justice, why shouldn’t we? They should be thankful I even talked to them at all. Selfish, ignorant fools like them deserve nothing! Even if they said they would stop using their Arts, they’re bound to do it again sooner or later! Maybe when less people start going to their concerts, or maybe when their sales start dropping. People like them... I won’t let them do what they want so freely.”

“There has to be some way to make them understand. I’ll help you! Or maybe we can report them to someone who can do something! This isn’t justice; it’s revenge! If you really cared for justice, then you would be trying to prove what they did to your sister.”

He stares at you for a moment. Then he lets out a laugh. “Yeah, I guess you can call it revenge. It’s still justified. What’s the problem? They stop doing their concerts, and no one else gets hurt.”

Kaisuke has a point. If he tried talking to them, and they didn’t listen, this might happen again. But... he’s given up. You won’t give up. You’ll never give up. What he’s doing is something that can’t be undone. You know the way forward, and you’ll believe in it.

“...No, that’s wrong. I’ll make them listen,” you say, “If you give me time, I’ll help you reveal the truth, even if I have to do it alone.”

“Do you even understand what you’re saying?”

“I’m the class president, and I’d like to think... I’d have a little bit of responsibility for everyone too,” you say, “Kaisuke, trust me.”

He frowns. “If they won’t listen to me, then why would they listen to you?”

That’s what he says. He’s right. Your words probably weigh as much as his. Yet, you know that you can do it. A false confidence, you suppose?

“Because I’m the class president.“ Whether you deserve it or not. “Of course, I can do this.” So you tell yourself. “If they don’t listen to me, I’ll make them listen to me.” It’s all lies, all the way down. “You don’t need blackmail.” Yet, they feel so real, as if they were always the truth all along. “Let me show you how.” So, they might as well be the truth.

He stares at you blankly for a long minute. Then, he breaks the silence with a laugh. “Alright, sure. Ms. Class President, I’ll leave it to you.” He walks away, opening the roof door. “I’m keeping the phone though. Insurance.”

The door shuts behind him, leaving you alone on the hospital rooftop to be accompanied only by the soft sound of the rain.

An indefinite stretch of time passes before you realize you were holding your breath. You let out a meek smile. That was exhilarating, wasn’t it?

You were almost shining like a star.

You do not want to be Katsuya Nekoyo right now, but you are him, unfortunately.

“Are you deaf?!” Shiba shouts.

“Huh, me?” you say, pointing to yourself.

“Huuuuh? Who else?! You better explain yourself before I knock you into next week,” she says, crossing her arms.

You are currently crouching in a bush, very inconspicuously following Shiba in hopes of finding Keisuke. It is not working. In fact, it is going extremely poorly.

She’s... she’s cracking her knuckles now.

”Oh hey, I didn’t see you there. How’s it goi—” Shiba suddenly slides behind you and grabs your arm. She pushes your knee forward with hers, and all of a sudden, you find yourself in an armlock. “Ow, ow, OW! Okay, okay! I’ll tell you, just let go!”

“You have a lot of nerve doing something like this at school, and to me! Tell me now!”

You cry out, “I can’t focus! My body’s not supposed to bend that way!” She let’s go, and you almost fall forward. You rub your shoulder, groaning at her strength. Does she not know how to hold back?! “Your stalker asked me to stalk your other stalker.” Shiba cracks her wrists now, and then her neck. “Kaisuke, I was looking for Kaisuke!”

Shiba now has a face of disgust. “Are you getting mixed up in my business again?”

“Ye—” you begin to say, then you take a good look at her, “—eah no way, no way.”

“Listen, I’ll spell it out for you so easily that even an idiot like you can understand. I can handle myself alright?” she says, “And I’ve already decided. The next time I see that little punk, I’m going to destroy him.”

“Please don’t do anything rash.”

“I’m not doing anything rash. I’m just teaching someone a lesson,” she scoffs, “I swear to the gods, he pisses me off! Just look at his stupid, smug look on his face. He’s not smiling, but I can feel it. I can feel his smugness! He thinks he’s so smart, talking to an upperclassman like that!” She’s practically stomping around, having some kind of tantrum. “You!”

“Me?” you say.

“Yes, you! Can you do me a favor?”

Ehn?
>”Sure.”
>”Yes.”

You take a step back, and then you begin to enter the bushes. She takes a step forward, and you turn on your heel. You take about one step forward before she lunges at you, grabbing your foot. Instantly falling forward, you put your hands forward to protect your face, but you find that one your arms isn’t up for the task.

Shiba says, “Why are you running, Nekoyo?! I haven’t even told you what it is! Come on, it’s just a small favor!”

”No wa—GAAAH! I mean yes! Okay, okay! I’ll do it, let go of me!”

You feel your body ache as you get back up. Shiba’s hand falls on your shoulder, and you practically leap out of your skin.

“Whoa, haha,” she says, “What was that reaction?”

“What is it already?” you say.

“I, uh,” she starts hesitating, “I’m worried about Hitsuji.”

“Why don’t you two get a room already?!” you say.

“What was that?” she says, squeezing your shoulder with inhuman strength.

“I didn’t say anything! Stop that! You’re going to break something!” you cry out.

“Hahaha! You’re kind of a wuss, aren’t you?” She lets go. “Anyways, Hitsuji... I mean, Hitsujikaze’s worrying me lately...” Shiba says. “I don’t know why, but she seems troubled.”

These two...!! Are the two of them just idiots?!

You say, “Have you tried talking to her?”

Shiba sighs. “I tried, but she won’t tell me anything. I’d help her out, but I kinda have my hands full with this punk. Well, I’ll talk to the others, but I think we already have a good idea of what we’re going to do. I mean, he wasn’t wrong...”

“What are you going to do...?”

“I’m going to kick his ass!” she proudly proclaims. “It’s nothing for you to worry about,” she says, laughing to herself as she slaps your back. You could’ve sworn you heard something crack. “Ah, I guess Hitsujikaze’s my concern anyways. It wouldn’t be fair for me to unload everyone on an underclassman, right?”

“R-right,” you nod.

“I should get going.” She turns to leave. “Change out of those clothes, will you? Gods, it looks like you’re about to cut yourself.”

You look down at your black attire.

W-what?

Thanks for playing! I tried to make the mini-arc fit the thread instead of stretching on endlessly for weeks like with Kururi’s. I hope the tonal shifts weren’t too awful. And absolutely no one saw that.

Comments, questions, criticism is welcome as always.

Thanks for running i re-read the previous threads this week and was reminded how much i love this quest keep up the good work. Also do you know when you'll be running next
>>
>>2204444
The more important question is:

Why did you get dubs twice?
>>
>>2204443
Thanks for running, fun thread as always. I enjoyed Usagi's section this time around, I'm glad that she got to have a bit of time in the spotlight after a lot of focus on Kururi and Yamikigo. I don't think that there was any problem with the tone changing. You've always done a good job of blending in the more comedic and comfy atmosphere of this quest with some of the more heavy moments that might show up.
>>
>>2204443
I wouldn’t stress about the tonal shifts. Everything seemed great to me. Thanks for running!
>>
>>2204540
I agree with this anon on pretty much everything. The only difference and real "complaint" is that saki feels really different to how she used to which i assume is intentional it just seems like a kinda drastic change but I'll trust where you're taking this I'm glad we get to see more saki
>>
>>2204459
I have absolutely no idea!
>>2204560
I'm channeling into the Saki that you see for a brief moment at the start the very first thread. It was there all along! Haven't you realized it by now? People only show you the things they want you to see, even Katsuya. I'm actually getting around to writing ideas I've thought of since the second thread, which is kind of insane.
>>
>>2204560
I feel like she was actually the same as she always is, it’s just that we got to see a private moment where she wasn’t displaying her usual persona.
>>
>>2204598
Yep thought so I know that Yami mentioned that she couldn't see whats kats was thinking the whole time as if he was hiding something and now that we got a saki pov we get to see her true colors. But i miss that cute little tsundere
>>
>>2204540
>>2204543
>>2204560
Ah okay, thanks for the feedback! It helps a lot. I can only really tell these things like a week after finish writing, which at that point it's a bit too late.
I have a confession. I listen to music when I'm QMing and when I switch it up, my emotions sometimes goes on a wild ride on its own.
Also! I'm going to be posting a bunch of small fun things throughout the week, which do not include the fabled promised 4komas.
>>
>>2204714
Can't wait
>>
>>2204050
Never would have thought Usagi is so full of self-doubt. I just want to hug her.
>>
>>2205497
Well I think saki is upset about kats is doing all the shit he has without her because near the end of thread 12 she said we felt distant and at the end of >>2198757 she says that she can't believe this is the fun she was missing out on so she needs to be administered the cock which no female in anime no matter how evil can defeat
>>
>>2205660
She clearly needs hand-holding coupled with snuggling under a warm blanket with Kats.
>>
>>2205668
Now that's way too lewd anon

I'm curious about how some of their names would be read in japanese. It seems like a lot of them are puns?
>>
>>2209323
Let's see...
Yuu Saki is lampshaded in-quest.
Katsuya Nekoyo is, obviously, a double cat pun.
Yamikigo = Darkness Child. Fitting.
Rori is probably an Engrish of "loli", 'cause she's short.
There's probably more.
>>
>>2209422
Other than those all I know is that Kaori means fragrance or something like that you can probably find some others by just looking it up. I can't believe I didn't realize the Rori pun it was so obvious

What a pleasant surprise! I actually had posted the kanji readings for their names in those qr code images, but I stopped since nobody seemed to notice or really bother.

Their names are written as:
寝子世 勝矢(Nekoyo, Katsuya)
愛子世 保 (Nekoyo, Haruko)
酥虎 空威 (Sotora, Sorai)
颯気 勇 (Saki, Yuu)
雪片 火旋風 (Yukikata, Hitsujikaze)
詩波 ろり (Shiba, Rori)
供流侶 九瑠璃 (Kururu, Kururi)
和絵巣 九瑠璃 (Kaesu, Kururi)
狂月 闇鬼后 (Kyougetsu, Yamikigo)
栄藤 香折 (Etou, Kaori)

Some of these names are read very oddly, but I'm alright with it since kanji was crafted from the depths of hell. Rori's name isn't written in katakana because that would be really weird, but the "loli" meaning is correct. I tried using names that were as normal as possible, but for some of them, I just gave up. Like Yamikigo's.

Some of the names in this quest are outright spoilers, but you would never know because they're in English.

Speaking of names, the idea of Sirens is taken from ClariS, the aesthetic from BABYMETAL, and their names from:
Toriena, who's Reina but I made a typo that I talked about before; Sakaue Nachi, who's obviously Nachi; Sayuri Anpo/Anporin/3L, who's obviously Anporin.

I think arbitrarily picking names is kind of a waste, since you could have so much fun with them or do all kinds of weird things. Kururi's name is the most ridiculous thing, so I wonder if anyone would get it. 'Hitsujikaze" is also up there, but it's not even close.
>>
>>2209778
On the subject of puns/references I have a question. Were the names of the games in >>2198109 a reference to "Academy Tournament Organizer" and "Dark Gate Academy"
>>
>>2209788
Yup.
