Welcome back, confirmed future Paladins, to the one hundred and fifth installment of Mecha Space Pirate Quest! I'm Wong, your host, and today you are once again Sir Gaius Wesker, the identity assumed by Heinrich "Caesar" Merrow, formerly of the UJCIDF and pilot of the King Swordfish.

Last time, you "helped" (as in, did almost all the work) save the train you were taking to the capital of Lorien, the capital planet of Avalon. You could not possibly be further into enemy territory than you are right now. However, a pair of mysterious allies helped you out in the final push, while Tabitha was bemoaning the lack of her own overpowered guns and the fact that circumstances forced her to use a cheap knockoff autorifle without the armor-penetrating ammunition she prefers.

Right now you're contemplating what to say to sound like a badass, despite the fact that a giant in power armor with a buzzsaw is terrifying to everybody, especially since he might have killed you even though you stabbed him through the head.

"You're pretty good." You remark nonchalantly, giving the man identified as Tumnus a thumbs-up. Abruptly, a thought strikes you as you look around the burned-out first class car of the train. You rush over to one of the rooms, and throw open the door. It's empty, completely empty. Each first-class compartment is a small suite, there are only four on the car itself, rather overly-fancy rooms that are now mostly twisted metal and debris from the drone barrages.

"Relax, as you said, we're pretty good at this." The greying man, tall and lean with a face that might have been handsome once replies. By 'once', you mean before whatever happened to give him so many scars, his skin is as rough as hamburger and his hairline is uneven from where the scars go up into his scalp, "We've been watching you and the Countess for some time, and bought all the first class compartments but one, which went unpurchased. We expected it would be bought by the Countess, but...you rather threw our plans off by sitting so far back. We were worried about being able to minimize civilian casualties, but all in all, I think we did about as well as could be expected."

"So, Caesar is your primary interest here?" Tabitha actually sounds slightly hurt. Then she shoots a venomous look at the plump man, "Alexei Bergeron, to think you were spying on me after the lucrative contract I gave you at that dinner meeting."

"Sorry." Alexei grunts, his voice sounding as if he's trying his best to keep its volume down. Water filtration manufacture plants must be very loud. "Believe me, Countess, the Sons and I wouldn't do this if it brought harm to you, the Roosevelt line has had its share of Tumnuses over the years. Even your..."

"Enough!" The greying man sighs, and rubs his temples, "Alexei, please. She has enough to think about right now. Yes, we have been watching since our people identified a person of interest traveling with you, originally we thought he might be a spy for the...the Green Man on this planet." He says Green Man as if the taste is foul, "However, I was manning the observation drones when you encountered the clone at that cafe, and I immediately recognized you. I knew your father, everyone who fought for humanity during the War did, it wasn't difficult to confirm my first impression from there with a little digging and further observation."

"You're not Avalonian?" You ask.

"No." He shakes his head firmly, "I was born on a colony orbiting the moons of Jupiter. I lost everything to the Green Men, and when the War was done I just...couldn't stop, couldn't let it go. I was a pretty good pilot, and even with a substandard mech I did decently well for myself as a mercenary, moving from world to world, until I heard the rumors of the last Green Man still alive on Lorien. I came here, established myself, and settled in as a citizen. I had to. I needed to see the end of it."

Say, I just checked the Master pastebin for the first time in a while and something popped out to me.

Are the fist drones meant to have no armour?

"You're not the only one." Alexei growls, "That...that THING calling itself a goddess is...it's an abomination!"

"H-hey!" The Countess protests, but Alexei just rolls right over her words like a tsunami over a child's sandcastle.

"The Green Men thought they could domesticate us! Make us like sheep! Make us forget what we are! Lull us to sleep and treat us like livestock! BUT IT WON'T WORK!" He shouts, "I'm a pioneer! I'm an explorer! I'm a HUMAN, and the Sons of Adam are coming for the Green Witch!"

"Al, I think-" Tumnus tries to interject and is summarily ignored.

"I'm alive! I'm animated! My heart's big, it's got hot blood goin' through it fast! I LIKE to FIGHT, too! I like to eat! I like to have children! I'm here!" His head thrusts forward like that of an angry bulldog, "I've got a life force!" He jerks his thumb toward himself, "THIS is a human! This is what we look like! This is what we act like!"

Tabitha looks horrified, but you can't help grinning behind your helmet. This is right, this, you understand, is what your father, what Floyd Beck, what all those countless other people were fighting for. To exist as humans.

"This is what everybody was like before us! This is what I am! I'm a throwback! I'm HERE!" He roars like a hurricane, "SHE'LL NEVER, NEVEEEER DEFEAT THE HUMAN SPIRIT! SHE'LL NEVER DEFEAT GOD! SHE'LL NEVER WIN! NEVER! NEVERRRR EVER! NEVER!" He wipes his brow, but doesn't slow down, "And this is where we get tested, so REJOICE TO GOD ALMIGHTY for this animated contest of liberty! RAAAAAAAAAAGH!" He throws his head back and roars like a lion.

"That's awesome." You whisper, suddenly feeling like yes, you CAN rescue Naomi and make it home safely with her. After all, nothing is impossible for a human to achieve!

Tabitha and Tumnus both give you a look, you don't care.

"Sons of Adam?" She asks skeptically.

"The first settlers of Avalon were heavily influenced by the Neo-Romanticist movement, viewing old Earth's society as corrupt and self-defeating, bereft of ideals. The idea was to create a new world, a fantasy world, here that expressed the best of humanity. Certain popular novels caught the imagination of the settlers, although little but the names remain. An early schism developed, and the winning faction of semi-henotheisticic deists worshipping an indefinable creator entity influenced by Christianity overcame the actual, traditionalist Christians among them. There was violence, but that was mostly political as far as I can tell, the cultural shift itself was bloodless. The Sons of Adam...and Daughters of Eve, although 'Sons of Adam' sounds pithier and is more commonly used, were a 'secret' society, more of an open secret than anything else, who cultivated and emphasized spiritual enlightenment and biblical values. Several past kings of Avalon relied on them as spiritual advisors, but over time, they became more of a...social club."

Man we should really join up with this team.

Thought so, but it's listed as having none and has the weight to match, so I was wondering.

"Until the Green Witch arrive, that DEMON! That SUCCUBUS! That HELL-SPAWNED CONCUBINE OF SATAN!" Alexei starts up again.

Tumnus nods, "Yes, her. Do you mind if I explain?" He looks pointedly at his compatriot.

Alexei shrugs, "Knock yourself out, you're the current Tumnus after all."

"Thank you. The arrival of the Lady changed all of that. The influence of the Sons of Adam was at its nadir, then, the current dynasty was corrupt and degenerate, and if they hadn't been ignoring them might have wiped the group out entirely. Revolution was, perhaps, inevitable...but the Lady, and her ability to strategize a hundred moves in advance, and the technology she brought to this baroque world, became a symbol for the revolutionaries to rally around. Of course, some saw the dangers, but others..."

"I'll tell him, you're not from here. Look, some of us just weren't strong enough in our faith, and thought that the Green Witch was a means to, I don't know, fix society, bring values back. They didn't understand, at least not at first." Alexei's voice is grim, "The last Tumnus, for example, swore himself to her service and became one of her allies. At least he had the decency to only put his own resources, not those of the Sons, into her filthy green hands."

"A Paladin!?" Tabitha gasps.

Alexei shakes his head, "No, not a Paladin. He was..."

Tumnus puts his hand on Alexei's shoulder, and the shorter, pudgy man pauses, "Sorry, I forgot. Jesus teaches forgiveness, and...in the end, he saw what was happening, privately opposed this new state-sponsored religion. He'd known the Green Witch too long to mistake her for anything resembling a god, and was even willing to speak openly against it. So he was disposed of. There was...a final coup, for the Green Witch, but it's too foul even to speak of. Makes me sick!" He starts to spit, then seems to think better of it in the presence of the scowling Countess.

"I was new to the planet at the time, I had plans to wage a one-man war against the last Green Man myself, and was working on acquiring the tools I needed for a suicide mission to assassinate her, but by coincidence I'd done a lot of reading after the War, and was quite familiar with C.S. Lewis. I was recruited after what I thought was a very casual conversation about literature, and in the time after the death of that particular Tumnus my antipathy towards the Green Men and my military experience led to my advancement to a leadership position quickly. I almost refused, but with my help the organization was able to stockpile weapons and create a network of informants and agents across the entire system, infiltrating deep into the very knighthood of Avalon itself. However...the Avalonians are a people who believe strongly in heroes, in symbols, and we didn't have any of those." His voice is oddly bitter.

"You could've..." Alexei starts.

"No." Tumnus says firmly, with the air of an old argument that he's denied over and over again.

Tumnus and Alexei are both quiet for a moment, as if each is expecting the other to speak. Tumnus, eventually, continues, "To the people of Avalon, the Lady is not just infallible, but invincible, peerless in every form of combat and impossible to stand against. Except of course, for the man who struck her down the first time, a man respected and feared by this entire system. His son, his heroic son, who currently goes by the name of Gaius Wesker and who the Green Man's clone almost identified as Heinrich 'Caesar' Merrow, her boyfriend, is just the man who could save this world, bring it back into the light, redeem it."

"You're blaming the wrong person! All of you, even the Duke! I know something is wrong with the Lady, I know someone is trying to use us for unscrupulous ends, but..." Tabitha bursts out, stammering.

"Then this is one road to the truth, isn't it?" Tumnus replies, "You'll find out what's really happening, and if you decide against us...turn us in. Destroy us. End our lives with your own hand, Paladin, if you would rather be just a doll of the Lady and not a human being." He smiles mirthlessly, "I'll even make it easy for you, and give you the coordinates to my own base. After all, Christianity requires faith." He shakes his head, "But, Countess Roosevelt, what I'm asking of you is just a small thing. What I'm asking of Caesar is much more difficult, and could destroy his life whether we succeed or fail. After all, he isn't just his father's son, he's a man with his own goals, his own dreams, servant to none but himself." He looks you in the eye, "Will you do this, Caesar? Will you join us and help end this war before it costs more lives, defeat the Green Man, and reunite you with your woman?" He extends his hand. "Will you be the hero we need?"

What exactly would be Caesar's roll? Keep getting achievements, allies, and information and report it back to you? The how is important since coordination is important.
Either case, this is just as TB said, this is pretty much what we are doing already, just with someone on the ground.
[Shake]
>>
Why do you run only when I'm tired Wong?
>>
>>2237201

I could always end on that tonight so people vote, then run tomorrow and Thursday to make up for the shorter thread.
>>
>>2237208

I used to run earlier but the business I work for is expanding rapidly and might go public, there were more opportunities for money and future promotions by staying late and burning the midnight oil to get shit done. It's been a problem, I know.
>>
>>2237202

The implication is that you'll be their figurehead, their hero, and eventually involved in overthrowing the existing order.
>>
>>2237213
It's fine, not really a problem, I've just been sleeping more recently myself so there's some overlap.
>>
>>2237171
>[Ask further questions, which you must specify.]

We're not your hero. We're Naomi's hero. Can you accept that, my love for a clone of the Lady? If so, then you must be willing to accept that if there is another path than conflict than you must take it.

Don't mistake me for a symbol, or a figurehead. I'm a man just as much as any other. And men can be just as much a tyrant as a Green one or otherwise.

> Also bring them up to speed on what we know about the 5 man band.
>>
I think I'll answer questions like this IC so you can decide, and then write them up as part of the eventual post. Ahem.

>>2237187

>"That's up to you. I have no interest in anything but seeing the end of the Green Men. Once that's done, my role is finished. I expect you'll be hailed as a hero. Maybe Avalon will find a new King or Queen, maybe they'll embrace democracy, maybe they'll force you to be their new ruler, maybe you'll go home to Jupiter. I wish I could give you a better answer, but I don't know."

>>2237202

"To be the hero. We'll give you information, resources, and do our best to keep allies close at hand, to facilitate your quest. We may suggest certain things be done that would greatly improve your odds of rescuing the clo-no, she's more than that to you, isn't she? Naomi. I can understand doing anything for the girl you love, and I wouldn't ask you to do anything endangering her...or the innocent people of this star system, who I've come to appreciate in my own way."

>Tabitha looks troubled at this response.
>>
>>2237234
>[Ask further questions, which you must specify.]

What kind of support do they expect once we come out, and what kind of support do they already have committed?

Who else are they working with?

They'll also have to fight us to judge us on our skill, so that we aren't a paper tiger or give them unreasonable expectations.

If it comes down to it, they realize we might end up actually leading their organization, right?
>>
>>2237245

For this one I'm just going to say that those are less "do I join you or not" questions and more "what can we do once I join you" questions. THOSE can wait. They're also making an awful lot of assumptions, especially the bit about having to fight you. They'll see you in combat sooner or later (and are aware of your deeds on Titan and possibly the fact that you beat at least two SOUL mecha simultaneously), and the question of you leading their organization clearly doesn't matter to Tumnus so long as it ends with removing veggie.
>>
>>2237219
>>2237234
Well, going to agree with a [shake] then.
Worse comes to worse and these guys are doing shady shit, we'll side with Tabitha. But our end goal is pretty much preventing Naomi from being a greenman.
>>
>>2237171
> What if it turns out Tabitha is right, and the Lady IS being used? Will you fight against Sol if they're behind this?

>[Do not shake]
>>
>>2237364
We aren't here to be the Hero of Avalon these guys are looking for
We are here to, extract Naomi and probably bury our Lance deep into traitorous pinks head, and then skip town.
Maybe help Tabitha stabilize her home
>>
>>2237324
>>2237234
> Do not shake

This guy convinced me.

We're happy if they want to help, and if we can help them we might. But I don't think we want to be a public figure for them. We won't turn them in, and if they want to take advantage of what we do here that's fine.
>>
>>2237383

Are you sure not shaking his hand is the best option for that? Not to influence your decision, there are reasons to refuse this offer just as there are reasons to accept it, but with your stated priorities it would seem like you have nothing to lose. Why should you care what happens to Avalon with the Lady out of the picture, and with these guys you have allies to help you extract Naomi, go home, and maybe help Tabitha. You can't operate a Gate by yourself, after all, or fight the Lady and all of the Paladins solo.
>>
>>2237406
> Why should you care what happens to Avalon with the Lady out of the picture,

Incompatible with caring about Tabitha.
>>
>>2237411
>Incompatible with caring about Tabitha.
So make the choice just because you want to fuck a girl? I can't image any woman would want to be with a spineless toad like that.
>>
>>2237324

Is that a vote?
>>
>>2237412
Becoming evil just for convenience? We might as well just join Avalon to be with Naomi if we're going to go that route.
>>
>>2237406
These guys don't exactly seem like the kind of people we can just ditch once we have what we want
>Got Naomi now thanks for the hand, good luck with killing your veggie and all that
And i can't help but shake this vibe that siding with them may end up with us splitting way with Tabitha or things ending poorly for her when one of the striders that was up until recently flying her colours and and being piloted by one of her knights openly becomes the figure head of the new Avalon Rebellion
>>
>>2237412
Remember, if a roll isn't involved it's probably best to vote the opposite of Thunder (excluding music recommendation).
>>
>>2237411

I was talking about that poster in particular and their reasons for their vote. YOURS seemed to be a dislike of zealotry, which is one of the "reasons to refuse this offer" I already stated. A bigger concern for you, if Tabitha is your reason, is whether or not the Lady is good for Avalon's continued existence as a civilization and for Tabitha herself. Again, that's your decision to make.

Ironically, people who want to shake Tumnus' hand because "fuck veggies" should consider that too.
>>
>>2237171
>[Do not shake]

They'll just use us and bet betray us for the cause. The only thing better than a Hero is a martyr. Especially one that could draw our dad in.

No way these guys aren't already working with someone else either.
>>
>>2237419
How the Lady is dealt with is just as important though.

I mean, we don't want to make Iraq/Syria - IN SPAAAAAACE.

Is Assad a dictator that should be removed? Yeah he's terrible for the people. But ISIS was worse.

Let's not repeat Americas mistakes along with it's triumphs.
>>
>>2237416

Again, there are a LOT of assumptions here, I never said ANYTHING about there being a straight-up open rebellion. People are, and I can MAYBE blame BR and some other people for this, making a LOT of assumptions based on super robot cliches that I don't always stick to. Viewed realistically an open rebellion at this point would be a godawful idea since you'd have to fight overwhelming odds and Belegor, Gavin, Eustace (maybe), and Maria.
>>
>>2237420
Get Ceaser public involved with your cause and killed for it and broadcast it to the Jovian's, to summon the True Veggie slayer
That's a mustache twirlingly devious plan
>>
>>2237415
>Taking down a tyrant that was plenty active in a war that almost wiped out Humanity
>Becoming Evil
>>
>>2237424
Sorry I assumed that since tjey want to make Ceaser a "Hero" it implied this being a more open Rebellion kind of thing, and not a Secret Hero working for a secret society.
Even though this group was sort of referred to a secret society / social club
>>
>>2237427
That's the secret Thunder, everyone's evil. Roarke, Naomi, Caesar's dad, even the cute catgirl that sold Amos that bacon cheeseburger. All evil.
>>
>>2237431

Always assume that most of the people who aren't Keith have some common sense.
>>
How the fuck are we actually going to save Naomi without these people anons? These people have contacts all over the place and presumably plenty of spies and secret tunnels and shit. We have Tabitha and whatever she has right now. Maybe we should just trust the Avalonians who didn't kill us on site for being Rudolf's son and that they aren't trying to fuck us.
>>
>>2237422

That makes sense if you think the SSL is ISIS.
>>
>>2237433
Hmmmm,
Would I sound like an absolute nutter if I changed my vote to
>Ask Tabitha what she thinks about his offer
We did offer her our services as her knight after, probably shouldn't just jump trains without aome input from her
>>
You know what, give me one good reason we should let the lady live? The only other Greenman we met was a total piece of shit. We know that she was involved in the war and was an active combatant due to her almost dying to Rudolf.
>>
>>2237171
>Shake

Fuck it, I can't see Caesar letting a Green Man live if it meant risking losing his chance at saving Naomi. He agreed to become a Paladin for her, this is far from the most Faustian bargain he's made and I have a weird feeling about the identity of the last Tumnus. Tabitha gets how serious we are, too, and might respect us more if we make decisions ourselves.
>>
>>2237440

>"You're asking me? I mean...it might help you. I don't want you to die because you tried to do this alone. On the other hand, even with all the evidence, there has to be more to this than meets the eye. I don't know, Caesar, I really don't. I told you before, I have a lot of doubts, but I believe in your choices whether you do this alone or with these people as allies."
>>
>>2237417

I would strongly advise not basing your votes on this metric. Thunder is for once actively for helping Avalonians, after all. Make choices for clearsighted reasons, not based on trolling other players, consider these problems carefully and vote for the future you desire instead of what you want to deny someone else.

The best post on the entire thread.
>>2237436
I must agree with Thunder on this one, even if not 100%.

While these guys are shady as far we know, we must come to terms with the fact that creating our own network of spies and getting trusty resources may be hard, so its unlikly that this is going to be a easy ride even if we have Tabitha and maybe the Duke by our side.

Taking this is consideration the SoA being alive is incrediblly luckly scenario to us, as they are an old faction on the planet with historically backed claims on the well-being of its people that is just jumping on our laps and promising their help in exchange for the small cost of removing veggie.

But I should warn you guys, we may be wrong about these guys and we may also be wrong about whatever is going on in the higher levels of Avalonian shenanigans... So if we are doing this we MUST....WE MUST make it clear that we agree with them that we are our own men, and that we are only going to help them on our terms and under what we think is just, and that the deal is off in the moment they try to pull the rug from under us.

But I believe that one thing is clear with anyone in this thread... No matter how this ends, the Greenlady cannot stay in power as she is now, even if by some very unlikely scenario we need her alive, she has to dissapear from public, this bullshit of cultists and pink-haired conspiracies must finally come to an end.

This we can promise them, that no matter what, the reign of the green people will come to an end.

>>2237424
Why are you blaming me for this? I never suggested having Ceasar solo rush the entire reign alone!

I mean, Roarke could survive it, but Ceasar is too young for that!
>>
>>2237533
HAHAHA WHY WOULD YOU BE SUGGESTING THAT SOMEONE TRIED TO GET CEASAR KILLED SO THAT THE REAL BEST SIDE CHARACTER MO COULD HAVE THREADS FILLED WITH SLICE OF LIFE DATES WITH REGINA?!?!?!
>>
>>2237507

See these are some pretty solid reasons. That's why I'm saying I'm neutral on this, there are good arguments for and against both sides.

I'll tally these votes tomorrow since they're a bit hectic.

>>2237531

Well, it wouldn't make sense for Naomi to take Kisses on missions with her, and since she was deployed to a cruiser for the 16-Psyche mission she left Kisses with her commanding officer, Colonel Stern.

ā€œI can't just agree to this. I may be Jovian, but I swore an oath, my sword is already pledged to Countess Roosevelt. If she says no, I'm not interested. My Countess?ā€ You look at her questioningly.

She wrinkles her nose, ā€œAre you being all formal just to tease me? These men know who you are.ā€

ā€œYour opinion matters. This is your planet.ā€ You tell her sincerely.

Alexei Bergeron seems oddly interested in her response, moreso than Tumnus, who is focused on you completely.

ā€œYou're asking me? I mean, it might help you, I don't want you to die or fail because you had to do this practically by yourself. The Duke might be content to just let you do your questing and find his morals assuaged by it, but I'm a bit more involved. On the other hand, even with all the evidence, there has to be more to this than meets the eye. I don't know, Caesar, I really don't. I think Turpin was behind...this.ā€ She waves her hand at the dead giant, ā€œI recognize his armor, that man at least WAS one of my cousin's knights. Turpin would have the best opportunity to subvert them.ā€

ā€œSubvert or worse. You remember Titan as well as I do.ā€ You grimly prod the metallic visor over the giant's face with the butt of your spear.

She shudders as if she just bit into a rotten fruit, ā€œYou...you're absolutely right. I told you before, I have a lot of doubts, but I believe in your choices whether you do this alone or with these people as allies.ā€

You turn your attention back to Tumnus, ā€œWhat happens when this is all done? When it's over?ā€

ā€œThat's up to you. I have no interest in anything but seeing the end of the Green Men's influence in the galaxy. Once that is done, my role is finished, I can retire and fade away, and never lift a weapon or plug into a HMIS again. I look forward to it. I expect you'll be hailed as a hero, maybe Avalon will find a new King or Queen...ā€ He ignores Tabitha's muffled harrumph, ā€œ...Maybe they'll embrace democracy.ā€ There is a louder harrumph, ā€œMaybe they'll force you to be their new ruler.ā€ No harrumph from Tabitha, despite him pausing in expectation of it, ā€œMaybe you'll just go home to Jupiter. I wish I could give you a better answer, but I myself don't know.ā€

[Continued]
>>
ā€œYou understand, don't you, that I won't let Naomi be hurt, right?ā€ Your voice does not come out harsher than you intended. It comes out harsh, exactly at you intended. ā€œDespite her being the clone of the Lady?ā€

Tumnus' expression changes. Suddenly it's very, very old and very, very sad, ā€œI, too, once loved. I know how far you will go for her, I would have done the same.ā€

ā€œSo what do you want from me?ā€ You ask. ā€œWhat would my role be? To report to you?ā€

He shakes his head, ā€œPerhaps, but more the other way around. We want you to be the hero of this story. We will give you information, resources, and try to keep allies nearby to facilitate your quest. We may suggest certain actions that would greatly improve your odds of success, putting our experience at your disposal, but ultimately the choice is yours. You're not becoming one of the Sons of Adam unless you want to, I'm not your commanding officer or your father or your priest, this is a friendship, a partnership based on trust and a handshake, and ultimately you'll be making decisions for yourself just as we do.ā€

You almost don't do it despite his words. This is just too convenient, they're telling you exactly what you want to hear and habitual paranoia has warning bells ringing in your ears. Plus, there are two things you know. First, a martyr is as symbolic as a hero, perhaps moreso. Second, they were definitely spying on you, and clearly they're no novices at subterfuge.

...but if you're willing to become a Paladin to save Naomi, you're willing to shake Tumnus' hand. You reach out and grip it, look into his eyes with an expression as implacable as your father, and you shake his hand. Under the terms he himself set, he has to know that you're your own man and that this deal is off the moment he tries to turn on you, if he does. Once again, you've rolled the dice and just have to see where they land.

[With that, you are once again Roarke Susan Starwind, Pirate King of Phaeton]

This is true. Fatima, Red, and Lori are capable leaders and commanders, so they can help with dealing with the gangs in the other colonies.Karen can be a sort of 'eye in the sky' if she can get ahold of surveillance.

I still stick by recording a speech and having it play at the right time to get the gangs off guard. Take them by surprise, blind side them, and hopefully get the rank and file to either surrender or turn on their leaders. I don't think morale will be high.

Glad you agree. Have a few more ideas to make use of Basil and possibly harpy shinobis to assist the ground forces. Not attacking directly, but perhaps getting snipers and operatives quietly to their position, maybe surprise drop tear gas, smoke them out of their bases, ect. Depends on how much air space the colonies have.

As for the after, we could probably seize the properties of the hex archs, gang bosses and use the liquidated assets to help california station. They have been known to be corrupt, and if those gang members who surrendered do community service as well, it should help get control of the station and public morale going.
>>
>>2240534
Eh I'd rather we didn't take on members of these gangs. Or at least put them through tons of vetting. We can't trust anyone involved with the BoF on any level.
>>
>>2240355
Fuck yeah
Though jokes aside, remember they don't have to be the exact character, just based on the appearance for visual reference, so they don't need to be exactly the same as who their appearance is based on. Still, I think he fits as a roarke/fatma child. You could have him be the younger twin though, to a proper older sibling that uses a martian styled mech to partially appease his mother and because he enjoys his unique mech to the conventional humanoid mech in the kestrels, with younger ryoma not even wanting to be the clan scion and feeling he lucked out.

>>
>>2240547
Less taking them on, more putting them to use. We don't want them in our army core, but killing people who surrender is a bad idea. Having them clean up the place or doing menial tasks that are impossible to sabotage quietly makes them useful, serves as a light enough punishment for peaceful surrender, and saves on some personnel we could use on more important tasks on the station.
The citizens who help get rewarded. The citizens who don't cause trouble get treated with respect. Rebel gang elements who surrender get off with a light punishment(but still not trusted with sensitive work), those who fight get considered members of a enemy nation and are subject to what that entails during war, and those who actively try to harm citizens or try to take hostages are given the harshest punishments.
>>

It really was the fault of the players. Like. Everyone gets salty because we go to a Nature Goddess and then a Fertility Goddess and they're all "Well our OP shit kind of requires a uterus" and then instead of fiding a war god or something that would give us back our cock they go off into "Bad Idea" part of the world.

Then proceed to crit-fuck three bosses (although using tactics helped).

Note however that we can probably convince Clemmy easily to let Sam come with us instead of her because Sam is the best at this stuff.

Clemmy isn't stupid. She didn't save a damn soul on that one ship. It's not what she does best.
>>
>>2240726
The current thread.
>>
>>2240774
The situation with Triple C is one where we will need help dealing not only with traps and negotiations, but possible gang members who are moving in. Roarke is handy in a 'punch wall, make door' sort of way for this, since it opens paths for withdrawing, counter ambushing, or just plain old fashion shenanigans.
>>
>>2240806
Not to mention he has Celebrity status.

Like.

Pretty sure "I'm a Pirate who made a Kingdom" will go over well with the gangs if we say "Hey, you guys already run this place, fuck the Hexarchs let's make this a station for the people. Also I punch Mechs to death."
>>
>>2240652
>genderswap

Blech.
>>
>>2240893
Well, the hexarchs are already dead and they were also a part of the issue (and ambush) of California Station. They need to be dismantled at this point since from what snippets we have seen, they were not for the people.

Honestly, I am surprised they aren't surrendering. 12 ships worth of crew is a Nasty loss, and that seemed to be their ace in the hole. Must have some nasty or charismatic leaders to not give up.. or they are getting paid really well by the 5MB.

You're sitting in your chair on the bridge of the Rhinehawk, brooding, surrounded by wives, turning over again and again Marian's words in your head. The bubbly blonde is chewing gum and playing with her PC, awaiting your answer.

Avi gives the girls a glare, ā€œCan you stop it? He's just had some tough news, let him think.ā€

You hold up a hand and everyone goes silent, ā€œMarian, you said you could arrange a groundcar?ā€

ā€œAyup, if you don't mind being a bit more conspicuous than if it's just you and me...ā€ Marian shrugs.

Clemmy gives her a poisonous glare, ā€œYou'd like that, wouldn't you? Well, he's got two blondes already and he's married to us, so you can go f...ā€

Samantha interjects, ā€œTHANK you, Marian, please go do that.ā€

Marian smirks just a tiny bit, ā€œI already did, I figured you'd do things this way. It's waiting for us on Colony 2, docking bay 94.ā€

ā€œDocking bay 94.ā€ You confirm, standing up, ā€œRosita, do you still have my disguise?ā€

She tosses her hair back imperiously, ā€œOf course, darling! You never know when it might come in useful. So you and I will...ā€

ā€œToo flashy.ā€ Samantha shakes her head, ā€œBesides, you've gone alone with him plenty of times.ā€

The others all nod, apart from Rosita, who grumbles and pouts, ā€œFine, I'll have to be satisfied with just contributing to the disguise.ā€ She sighs melodramatically.

ā€œSamantha, Clemmy. You both have useful talents for this, you'll come along.ā€ You stand up, ā€œRosita, thank you.ā€ You kiss her cheek so she doesn't feel too bad about being left behind.

ā€œFour people, great.ā€ Marian groans. Clemmy gives her a look full of fangs.

From there, you assume once more the false face of an old but muscular man, this time eschewing your deliveryman's outfit for a rather plain suit, and get down to Colony 2 with your associates, where a towncar with tinted windows is waiting for you. It looks a bit expensive, but Marian assures you it's fine, the district in question is known for its brothels and you'd hardly be the first discreet gentleman to visit there.

Despite their earlier brief thaw, Samantha and Clemmy spend much of the ride bickering, one sitting on either side of you in the back seat...by your own design, you like having one on either side...while Marian sits up front, chauffeuring. Her driving is abysmally reckless, but thankfully the roads are almost deserted. Clemmy looks a bit too nice in a knee-length, sleeveless white dress and the combat boots she insisted on wearing, while Samantha blends in better in a long brown coat and one of those puffy newsboy caps with the tiny brim, her tiny feet nestled in sensible flats. In the distance you can see a few Iron Kestrels Bluegills flitting around a comms tower, but soon enough even those are out of sight. You drive deep into the urban jungle. Here, the buildings are tall, mossy towers thick with vines that bloom with large, scarlet blossoms. Hibiscus is common, stalks protruding from fat, fleshy petals like insolent tongues, and the air is rich with the scent of flowers, fragrantly decadent.

ā€œRed would like this place.ā€ Clemmy murmurs, gawking as you pass by what's clearly a brothel disguised as an office building.

ā€œNo she wouldn't.ā€ Samantha disagrees, ā€œShe'd just find it insulting.ā€

Bridges, some covered and made of steel and glass, others makeshift and fashioned from long chains and slats of spare wood, crisscross between the towers, and as you drive, you notice a few figures stop and stare at you. Some of them have guns.

ā€œShitfuckdamn.ā€ Marian groans abruptly, as the groundcar slows down, ā€œThey've set up a checkpoint.ā€

Up ahead, you see a Plecostomus streetsweeper mech skewed sideways across the street to block it, a weak thing that even a Shetland could successfully knock over, an unarmed machine made to clean roads, its four articulated arms lined with brushes and grimeblaster nozzles. It has a plasteel bubble on top where the pilot sits in lieu of a head, and rumbles along on articulated treads rather than legs. It's been vandalized, though, its ultralight armor...more of a chassis to keep the internal parts from falling out than anything else...riddled with bullet holes, and the words 'ALL HAIL THE KING' spraypainted in yellow across its flanks, along with a bunch of graffiti. It apparently still works, though, because a teenager with magnum revolver much too nice to have belonged to him originally is lounging in the cockpit, spinning his gun clumsily around his finger and smoking a joint of cannabis. Another handful of people, mostly men with a couple of hard-faced young women are standing around, two of them at a rough semblance of alertness, fingering their autorifles and looking bored, while the rest squat in a circle playing dice.

ā€œKeep calm everybody, I'll deal with this.ā€ Marian takes a deep breath, braking as one of the gunmen flags her down.

He's got a big bowie knife prominently displayed on his belt, what you recognize as a fairly cheap energy rifle with far too many attachments on it in his hands, including a bipod, flashlight, and an optic elevated too high to seriously be useful, along with a laser sight. He has a scar on his cheek, and his jawbone is slightly twisted, as if some heavy, metallic object had once hit him there with enough force to break open the skin and shatter the bone. ā€œI don't know if I can just let you through, but maybe we can negotiate on what sort of...eheh...toll you pay.ā€ He licks his lips.

One of his comrades, a woman with a blockish sort of body, wide but without much curve to it, leans down to peer at the tinted back windows. Her dark hair is shaved to stubble on the sides and back, and the top is cut short and dyed virulent yellow at the tips, spiked with some sort of gel, ā€œPut the windows down, we've gotta inspect the passengers.ā€

Marian nods, and the girls roll the windows down. Samantha huddles closer to you, Clemmy stares fearlessly. The blockish girl leans on the sill, ā€œEh, just some old fart and his whores. Kinda cute ones, though.ā€

ā€œEyes off the one on the front seat. You know I like blondes.ā€ The one with the scar says. He's oddly familiar somehow.

ā€œYou're lucky I'm just the driver, you know.ā€ Marian forces a laugh, ā€œThe boss is in good with the Hextarchy, if you fuck with him...ā€ She stops as the gang bursts into raucous laughter.

ā€œThe Hextarchy isn't running things anymore.ā€ The scarred gangbanger works up some saliva in his mouth and spits into the gutter deliberately, ā€œCalifornia Station is Five Man Band territory now, and we're its vanguard. After this, we'll be full-fledged space pirates, and we can take whatever we want. I like your dark-haired friend there, why don't both of you come with me instead? I'm not as wrinkly as gramps there.ā€

ā€œI like blondes too.ā€ The husky girl agrees, reaching in and tickling Clemmy's chin with stubby fingers, ignoring her growl, ā€œWhat about it, sweetheart? You can pay your toll that way, just come with me, get on your knees, and...ā€ Her hand creeps lower and grabs Clemmy's breast. The blonde woman's head snaps forward, and she sinks her teeth deep into the flesh of the woman's forearm, shaking her head back and forth and tearing away a strip of bloody meat. The woman falls back, screaming and dropping her brilliantly pink submachine gun. You expect an impending hail of gunfire, but the scarred one holds his hand up, laughing at her.

ā€œFucking idiot, guess you can't afford her. Someone sterilize the wound and bandage her arm with gel-aid.ā€ He seems to love swaggering in front of his motley crew, you've seen the type before. Clemmy wipes her mouth off with a tissue, and spits out the window on the fallen gangbanger, Samantha looks a little ill. Marian, by contrast, looks impressed.

ā€œThanks, handsome. You've just earned my number.ā€ Marian winks and waggles her PC at him, and they swap digits. You, remembering the fate of the pimp she'd captured and, presumably, killed when you first met, wince instinctively.

ā€œI'll call you. You know, I really hope Starwind runs, he's got no idea how many ships he's up against.ā€ The scarred ganger's words momentarily confuse you, then you realize that this crew must have been stationed here all day, if not longer. ā€œI bet the battle's practically over now. I hope he lands, and tries to hide. I hope I'm the one who finds him and skins him while he begs for mercy. My scar...ā€ He dramatically runs his thumb over it, ā€œMy scar aches just thinking about it. He gave it to me. He was so scared of my knifeplay he had to pull his gun out, some 'boxer' he is, ha! I bet all the talk about him being a hardass is a bunch of bullshit!ā€

ā€œThat's right!ā€ One of the gangers echoes, and another fires his gun into the air for emphasis. It jams, and he starts cursing, trying to fix it, he doesn't seem very familiar with how it works.

Marian makes a face, ā€œOh boys...I'm sorry, but the space battle is over. The Kestrels won.ā€

They all stare at her, the scarred one's mouth agape, ā€œB-but all those ships...ā€

ā€œStarwind has battleships.ā€ She says, in a stone-cold serious voice, ā€œReal ones. Quantity isn't good enough against quality.ā€ She covers her mouth, eyes wide, ā€œNobody told you? You just...got ditched by the Band? That sucks, but at least you can get away clean.ā€

ā€œDAMN IT!ā€ The scarred gangbanger shrieks, ā€œDAMN IT, DAMN IT, DAMN IT! HE WAS GOT! HE WAS SUPPOSED TO FINALLY GET HIS ASS HANDED TO HIM!ā€ His fingers twist on his gun, ā€œYeah, you're right, we've gotta go to ground. We'll hide, keep our ears open, and the Band will contact us soon I bet. We're their ground troops, they wouldn't just give us all these weapons and then ditch us. Fuck, this puts me in an awful mood...but I know a cure. Girls, you're about to be free of this old pervert. Get out of the car, gramps! Executing a rich old fuck is just what I need to get my head straight!ā€

Man that's called propositioning. They didn't say "sex or death" nor did they say "I'll fuck you until you die from it" they offered passage for sex. You need to calm down, sir. Removal of the offending arm is fine for a molestation. Clemmy can take the arm off the chick who touched her, we take the arms off of over half, and Sam and Marian can take the arms off of the rest. Then of course he is arrested for making threats against Roarke's life. Duh.
>>
>>2241640
The way I see it, if he lives he will call for help. If he dies, he may get the others to decide 'I don't want to die so I surrender'.

>>
>>2247021
Guncannon but replace the arms with another pair of cannons.

I call it the Guncannoncannon.
>>
>>2247135
The odd thing is, I can see it happening in the one year war.
>>
>>2247021
A specialty stealth mech that doesn't turn invisible, but can't be detected by sensors and hides itself by burying itself in sand/dirt. I thought of the idea when I was playing through Front Mission again and got to that one mission where some guys pull that trick on you. We can sell the design to the Martians.
>>
>>2247021
Imagine a 4 legged platform with big beefy legs for all the stability ever. Now, add a vaguely humanoid torso, equipped with the biggest fuckoff cannon we can possibly design.

It'd sort of be like a budgeted Tarrasque, but also sort of not?
>>
>>2247155
Doable. I recall there being some cheap camo that works like that. If it has a Electronic Warfare system, it could likely hide it's signature for several units. Good for ambush, but not for stealth missions like the Betta. Would be a good thing for Mars with it's large tracks of land and bandits.
>>2247172
Now, that one is tricky. The issue is, more legs mean more weight. It also means more space for thrusters, but they sadly do not offer much. Though, if you want a budget Tarrasque, best I can picture is a weapon that takes up two weapon mounts on the torso, plus as much space as possible in the torso itself. If you go tarrasque size, thats a lot of space for a big gun.
>>
>>2247199
>I recall there being some cheap camo that works like that.
Really? I just dropped the stealth multipler to x0.1 instead of x0.3. Do you remember where it's at in the book?
>>
>>2247212
basic cloaking which is a 0.15 multiplier. Same page as active.
>>
>>2247241
That's the opposite of what I'm talking about, it turns you invisible without hiding you from sensors. I guess I could just flip the effect and keep the cost though.
>>
>>2247258
Actually yeah, that makes a lot more sense. The only thing Active Cloaking has over basic is sensor stealth. It only makes sense sensor stealth on its own is x0.15.
>>
>>2247258
Thats why I mentioned Electronic warfare systems. One way to use them is to hide your mech. Make a sort of static zone if I recall. You use the basic cloak for sight, and the other for sensors in general. Would be cheaper, but it eats up a action to maintain.
>>
>>2247199
The idea would be something of a mobile artillery platform, I dunno.
>>
>>2247285
There need to be more Mech-Propelled Artillery.
>>
>>2247285
Then two legs would be fine. If you want cheap, you can lighten the armor to reduce weight and costs. A 14 kill weapon would take out the torso of any medium striker. 21 CP as a base there. You make it hex, and it will cut through a area but double the base cost and spaces. Or you go the patch of Jesus and make it a sniper cannon.
>>2247297
I did make one as a sort of boss for a mekton game. It was called the Patriot. It had a 20 kill max range cannon designed to fire Blast 4 shells over the horizon.
>>

>>2247279
The idea I had was for it to /not/ have a visual cloak, it keeps itself itself with its sensor stealth and the environment to be cheaper than getting a mech with an Active Cloak. I didn't know that ECM did that though (I figured they just forgot/left out sensor stealth like they did with a lot of stuff.) I'll get around to revising it if someone doesn't beat me to it.

>>2247285
BEHOLD. Your idea, but worse!
https://pastebin.com/uwATbhKg
>>
>>2247321
Well, the whole point of having 4 legs was so that the recoil of the Giant Fuckoff Cannon wouldn't knock the thing flat on it's ass...
>>2247327
Huh, that's actually kind of neat. 6 legs and no arms would be a pain in the ass to pilot though... But, so would 4 legs and 2 arms probably?
>>
>>2247327
Uh, correct me if I'm wrong, but won't it blow off the top bits of the middle legs when it fires? I know you said it was worse, but that's the sort of thing you'd think would get caught in QA.

I'm trying to wrap my head around statting in mekton desu.

I've got a bunch of pretty completed mechs but I haven't really been able to put numbers to them.

One of which is an oversized mecha that essential doubles as a heavy corvette.
>>
>>2247408
And welcome to the hardest part of the game; trying to budget your war machine. The prices should be there, just start with the base, then the weapons, then the modifiers like stealth.. then weight efficiency at the end because fuck it thats how things work with mekton.
>>
>>2247408
What part are you having trouble with? Keeping everything straight, the order you do it in, or picking which servos and such to use?
>>
>>2247422
Some of my designs, especially the more bossy ones and especially end-game ones are more on the super robot end of the spectrum and it's putting a spanner in my works.

>>2247435
Order and servos.

Some of my problems stem from a concern that some of my ideas are too bullshit.
>>
>>2247455
I can understand that. Its why I test them out a bit in powered down stages. Like missing a key defense or ability. The Patriot didn't have it's main cannon, but it still punched the mechs into scrap.. until it got a cinematic hit to the ammo deposit and thrusters.
>>
>>2247468
Do you just play with yourself in that case?

A big part of it is an energy source in the setting I've made that's like a toned down Spiral Power from TTGL, but you need the specific type of engine or a biomech to use it.
>>
>>2247478
Nah, this was the chapter one bonus boss for a game I try to run. They were doing pretty well, and they beat their own cocky rookie rival in hilarious fashion. So I had the drill sarge face them 3 on 1 in his machine.

What about servos is tripping you up?
>>
>>2247551
Also, I may have forgotten something. Someone speak up if I did, please.
>>
>>2247551
>What about servos is tripping you up?
I don't know, it seems like everything but it's been a while since I touched any of the real technical aspects. I know there are hard and soft limits to the number of servos, but is there a real limit to what can be stuck in arm/hand/wing/head/misc servo slots? Can something take up multiple servo slots?
>>
>>2247624
I think the hard limit was 8. So long as it fits in the space, it's good, but there are ways to make multi servo, even multi mech weapons. It's in the earlier parts of the advance tech manual. Though, depending on the size, it might be better to just use space efficiency.
>>
>>2247624
>I know there are hard and soft limits to the number of servos
You can only have one torso servo. I don't know about the max number of servos you can have though.

>is there a real limit to what can be stuck in arm/hand/wing/head/misc servo slots?
So long as a servo has the space for it, you can put most anything inside a servo. Want a cockpit, 20K beam gun, 2 drones and 100 missiles in your arm? You can totally do that if you use enough space efficiency. Whether a GM lets you use it in a game is a different matter.

>Can something take up multiple servo slots?
Yes. Weapons, for instance, will take up a lot of space since good ones are so expensive to make (the Blitz's main gun has 18 space efficiency for example.) Hands can hold weapons up to however many spaces the arm they're attached to has. You can use multiple hands to wield a weapon, but if you lose one of the hands/arms, you can't use the weapon.

Electronic warfare kind of works for that, but only to a point. Radar jamming reduces the awareness roll to spot stuff, but only out at the extended range provided by a spotting radar, it does nothing to regular sensors.

Sensor jamming meanwhile doesn't actually impact awareness, but instead bumps down the range of an enemy sensor system as if it were one size smaller for each ECM point (so 2 sensor ECM would reduce the range of medium striker sensors to that of lightweight sensors, for instance). This effect cuts off at superlight sensor level and any further reduction just imposes an accuracy penalty.

In short, ECM can stop you being spotted on sensors, but only at ranges beyond 1km (since that's the range on a superlight sensor suite).

I conceived of one once, consisting of a mech carrying around an out of scale corvette sized gun loaded with blast scatter rounds that, due to the scaling, were pretty much guaranteed to hit every location on a mech at once for 20 or 30 kills. Sort of makes it clear why allowing out of scale shenanigans is a bad idea.

In ancient times, there was a particular sort of fable told across cultures all over the world of Terra. In it, a god or spirit takes the form of a mortal, and wanders the planet's surface, doling out just rewards to the mortals it encounters based on how they treat it.

Most commonly, the gods in question would take the form of old men.

You feel Clemmy and Samantha both reach for their weapons, and grab their arms, "Alright." You force some creak into your voice, "It's not worth losing your lives over, girls, just cooperate."

"Hey, no-!"
"But I-!"

You shut them both up with a smile and a squeeze, adjusting your hat and climbing over Samantha to get out of the car, standing in front of the angry young man with the scarred face. He's got some muscle on him, he could have made something of himself if he hadn't gone down this path in life. "You don't want to do this, young man." You warn him.

"Shut up!" The butt of his rifle cracks you across the mouth. You hear Clemmy hiss, and see Samantha frantically holding her back as you wipe your lip...and realize there's no blood. The rifle is too light, and reflexively, you swayed back with the blow to absorb it.

You see the boy with the magnum revolver, the one sitting on the pilot's seat of the Plecostomus, watching you closely. He looks worried, the others are jeering.

"Burke, we might have to put the one blonde down, I don't think she's gonna cooperate, and besides, I think she might've killed one of us, I think she bit out an artery." One of the other thugs comments. "The bleeding won't stop."

"SHUT UP! SHUT UP! I'M IN CHARGE HERE! Our whole lives, rich, cocky bastards like this have looked down on us, ordered us around, kicked us when we couldn't pay our dues...but not anymore! We're part of something real now, something big! WE have the power, THEY don't!" Scarface...Burke, you guess, waves his energy rifle around wildly, before shoving you across the chest with it, "On your knees, old man, I'm going to execute you, and then I'm going to tear a RED FUCKING SWATHE ACROSS THIS COLONY, AHAHAHAHA!" His laughter has a crazy tinge to it, and the barrel of his gun judders wildly.

"No, thank you." He wants his ceremony, he wants to look strong, to see you break, to watch you beg. Maybe he won't shoot you until you kneel or he forces you to kneel, maybe he will, but this encounter is already over, it doesn't matter.

"No thank me!? Then I'll just kill one of your whores firs-" He never gets to finish. The tip of his gun jerks away from your chest, and you move.

You aren't aware of this, but to those watching, at first it's not clear what just happened. Some of them assume it's sniper fire. Others are at an angle where they see the blur of your arm moving. Burke's jaw, on the opposite side from his scar, shatters with a crunch, visibly snapping and tearing nearly free from the upper half of his skull.

Ancient Terran Wisdom, Burke; Talk shit, get hit.
>>
The impact causes your hat to go flying from your head, and your crimson mane, greyed at the tips where you arranged it to stick out from under the hat, comes flying out behind you like the tail of a comet, as Burke goes spinning through the air to land unconscious and bleeding from his broken face into a gutter several meters away.

"I didn't need to get out my gun that time." You remark mildly. You bend down, pick up his discarded energy rifle, and let your mind go blank, going into the place where you go when you break things. You snap metal and polymer alike as if it was a toothpick, and toss it away. "Get out of my way." You order.

The gangers hesitate, but more out of abject terror than defiance, some of them excreting on the spot as they throw their weapons down and run away, screaming. You fix your hair up under your cap again, climb back into the groundcar, and pat an abruptly purring Clemmy on the top of her head, "There was nothing to worry about." You admonish her gently. You see Samantha leaning towards you and pat her head too.

"So, that was your gloves, right?" Marian asks, a little too casually, the way a spooked cat will lick its paw and try its best to look calm before dashing away.

"No. Well, the extra weight helped knock him out, but...if I hadn't had them on, I could have just killed him." You shrug your shoulders.

"Is it true you once punched out a mech barehanded?" She asks in a very small voice.

You shrug, "Just a Harpy, it interrupted my wedding."

Marian makes an indistinct noise, "Y-yes boss. We'll go to f-find your b-b-brother right away, b-boss." In a smaller voice, she whispers, "Please don't punch me ever."

"Don't do anything to deserve it." Samantha sniffs.

Immediately, Clemmy glowers at the dark-haired girl, "That's my line!"

You notice, then, that one of the gangers hasn't left. The kid sitting on the Plecostomus. He gives you a cheeky grin, and powers it up, and momentarily you expect to have to fight...but then he moves it out of the way, giving you a wave as the streetcleaner mech waddles away down the street.

Naturally, you wave back. You hope he finds something better to do with his life, something respectable. Like being a real criminal instead of a gangbanger, you gave that up for a reason when you were a few years older than him.

That kid is CLEARLY someone we need to either recruit or kill. Call him back.
>>
>>2254491
A mecha smaller than a shetland. Specifically, a cleaner mech. Chances are, the gangers took it from the guy doing their job and had the kid do road block duty because they had better things to do. Like a rousing game of Yahtzee.
Sides, I don't think him being in a mech means much. Anyone who plays bluegill joe has enough mech experience to get the things moving and from what the leader gloated about, they probably thought they would get so much better rides than him. Like Harpies.. and double harpies.
>>2254810
We have enough paranoia on our plate and the longer we linger, the worse it gets for us and CCC.
>>
>>2254810
Not the time for that, don't worry, he will probably survive.
but lets not trust him automatically just because he is a smart kid, he could just be jumping alliances to whoever have the high ground in the moment.
>>
>>2255035
We're pirates. A large number of our top officers are defected pilots who joined up with us. Hell, Moe joined us cause we intimidated the shit out of him and look at him now.
If you are concerned about possible traitors and assassins, well.. people switching sides is going to happen when someone loses the edge in combat. The assassin thing is easier; you just need to make it so any price is too little to take on the job.
>>
>>2255049
And look at all the problems that have been caused by letting any Tom, Dick, or Harry in. We need to be vetting these people we can't just let anyone join just because they want too.
>>
>>2255059
The guy just smiled at us and let us pass and people want to recruit him.
Incredible.
Lets start avoiding fancy restaurants from now on.
>>
>>2255059
We are going to have these issues even with tightened security. Threats, black mail, hostages, all can get people to back stab us. That is a issue with war with nebulious sides taking part in it. Likewise, capable assassins have used simple replacements by just killing someone loyal and taking their place until they need to do their job.
Trying to tighten our grip will only make things worse as paranoia will make others doubt us. Does that mean open borders and accept anyone? No, I am still for merit and those who are willing to grow and learn. But as I said, why not make it so assassins Don't want to come for us?
We have examples from our glasses and sensors. We still have a living assassin. If Meridian is considered as high as they come and he died, and stealth, deception or ambushes don't work, alongside numbers, then it will cut down their options.
>>
>>2254810
Calm down man, the no need to kill or recruit every character that has even a token amount of interaction with us
>>
>>2255090
>Trying to tighten our grip will only make things
worse as paranoia will make others doubt us
Why would they ever doubt us for paranoia when we've had at least 6 assassination attempts. Being more guarded of who we accept is just what would be expected after that.

>But as I said, why not make it so assassins Don't want to come for us?
We should be doing that too. Next assassin we catch needs to be publicly made an example of.
>>
>>2255096
Yes, but consider how they came about. Two were Fairchild, the rest were 5MB. We have footage of us punching a mech. We have testimony from the failed cotton candy poisoner. The Geisha is alive, we killed Meridian with our glasses on, and have footage of the assassin in the hexarch chamber. All this can serve as examples, with the geisha serving as a live one if needed.
However, While I agree that PERSONAL security must be strong, and that security of important positions and key locations are given to our loyal and capable, Trying to restrain everyone who comes to join the nation is going to be tough while we are still forming the nation.
We are going to be adding colonies. There will likely be militias and colonial guards already established alongside factories and operations. Manpower for projects is going to be needed as we expand, alongside raising our own troops to defend our gains and territory. Likewise, King is likely working to expand his territory along side Jupiter and Mars.
Being cautious is good, but sometimes you need to spring the trap as well to get the biggest prize. Still, keeping the most loyal and skilled for Roarke's crew is not a bad idea, but securing a ever expanding border is not going to happen until we deal with the Five Man Band.
>>
>>2255176
>>2255072
I mean getting the smart and streetwise urchin with a mech to guide us through hostile ganger territory is a good plan.

And if he is a spy, better to have him where we can see him and crush his head with a thought.
>>
ā€œIt's a jungle out there~ā€ Clemmy sings quietly to herself, looking at the buildings you're passing. It's not completely inaccurate, the oxygenating plants used here are older strains, prone to overwhelming buildings if left untended for a while, and this place looks remarkably untended. Less than a slum, it's practically abandoned. It reminds you vaguely of the ancient temples you've seen in Species of Earth, where a civilization was built and then just...abandoned, slowly returning to nature. You see a few junkies, and a couple of what look like gangers with weapons, but they must have heard about what happened in space since they don't even pause to look at you as they flee for some hidey-hole buried in this district.

ā€œWhat happened here?ā€ Samantha asks, ā€œWhy is this place abandoned?ā€

ā€œThere was a fire on Colony 2, nobody knows what started it.ā€ You remember that much, ā€œThis is that neighborhood, right?ā€

Marian nods, keeping her eyes on the road, which is full of potholes and dense with weeds, ā€œThat's right, back in the days before the shipyard. The mines were drying up, and when people fled they just...didn't come back. There have always been plans to redevelop it, but they were plagued by bad luck, some people say there's a curse here. Besides, there was plenty of space on the other colonies, it was less work to build new neighborhoods there, and this one is in a bit of an awkward place, relative to everything important on the colony. It slipped through the cracks, some things always do, and there was no one to complain about it.ā€ Her voice sounds a bit nervous as she glances around, ā€œIt gives me the creeps.ā€ A locator beeps on the central screen of the groundcar's driving console, and she glances forward, ā€œThere we are.ā€

Up ahead looms a huge tenement building, one of those sub-working class apartments where people tend to be packed in like bullets in a magazine, at least when they're occupied. The windows are all boarded up, and there's some graffiti on the stonework...but not much, surprisingly, the thick hide of moss on the building's flanks makes it a poor place for tagging. The front door isn't boarded up, just rather dilapidated, it might not even be locked.

Marian parks the groundcar, hoists a backpack onto her shoulders, and slings her shotgun over her arm, ā€œListen, boss, I won't think any less of you if you want to turn back now, this place gives me the jeebies...ā€

ā€œAs if we would!ā€ Clemmy laughs at her.

ā€œMmh.ā€ Samantha seems less certain, picking her way carefully over the weeds as the three of you approach the building. You keep a nervous eye out, the trepidations of Marian and Samantha affecting you to some small degree. Sure, Cassius might be in there, but you don't know that, and your brother was a genius with mechanical designs, any traps he made would surely be lethal.

You do think you see, momentarily, the glint of something metallic through one of the boarded-up windows, but as you reach for the door handle, Clemmy grabs your forearm and yanks you back, ā€œListen!ā€

ā€œI don't hear anything...ā€ Marian starts, but shuts up as Clemmy gives her a menacing glare. The four of you pause, completely still, and then you hear it, a faint humming noise.

ā€œAn electrified doorknob?ā€ Samantha guesses.

Clemmy nods, ā€œProbably. There has to be another way in.ā€

You look more closely at the window you saw the glint from. It's on the ground floor, and abruptly you realize why it stood out, the ivy growing over and around it hasn't worked its way into the boards the way it has with the others. In fact, the boards have been cleverly placed in just such a way that they hide the fact that the seemingly criss-crossing slats are all of one piece on a hinge at the bottom, which becomes obvious as you make your way over and examine it more closely. Above the window, a latch and eyebolt are hidden beneath the ivy, and when you undo them you find no glass beneath the wood, just a folding ladder on another hinge on the inside of the windowframe. You pull it out through the hole, and it unfolds into steps as it was designed to do.

ā€œI didn't even hear that. I hope I'm actually useful, boss, right now I'm feeling kind of like a lynx in a cage with a lion and two lionesses.ā€ Marian gripes.

You glance at her, ā€œDo you want to go back?ā€

ā€œThrough ganger territory, alone, leaving you here with no groundcar?ā€ She questions.

You shrug, ā€œYou could stay outside and guard the car.ā€

ā€œBy myself?ā€ She shakes her head quickly, ā€œI at least want to be somewhere I can see someone coming.ā€ She makes a determined face, ā€œI'll do my best, you promised me a good mech, the least I can do is earn it.ā€ She bows deeply, ā€œPlease forgive my cowardice.ā€

ā€œMarian, I'm a pirate. Being cautious is more useful than reckless foolhardiness to me.ā€ You're well aware of what a massive dose of hypocrisy that is. Clemmy looks approving and nods vigorously, but Samantha arches one delicate eyebrow at you, smiles, and shakes her head.

ā€œNever change.ā€ The dark-haired girl murmurs, as the three women follow you into the vegetable-scented dark.

Ah, the flamethrower. Classic.
>>
The room you enter is a barren, concrete cube, but it's at least clear of vegetation and some effort has clearly been made to clean up. It's also full of stuff. Construction tools, for the most part, a circular wrecking saw, a plasma cutter, a spraycan with a bunch of jugs of herbicide nearby, along with bags of quik-crete, 3D-printed molds for wall sections, and a simple trowel. A pair of wading boots, coveralls, and a breather mask hang from pegs near the door. Various cans of chemicals and paint occupy one entire wall.

ā€œSomeone has been doing some remodeling.ā€ You note, ā€œGirls, if this was your hideout, what kind of traps would you set here?ā€

ā€œ...This doesn't feel like the sort of place Triple C would be.ā€ Clemmy mutters to herself, ā€œHe wasn't the kind of guy who would hide.ā€

ā€œI told you, it was just a rumor I heard, I could be wrong. Don't blame me for anything.ā€ Marian mutters too.

ā€œHm~ā€ Samantha purses her black-stained lips, and cautiously starts to open the door using the tip of one of the tools, stopping almost immediately. She pulls a monoknife from inside her coat, and runs it along the scant centimeter of space between the door and the jamb, ā€œNo tripwires, as expected. If he comes and goes regularly, it would have to be something that could be deactivated easily, probably electronically. A simple app on your PC, and a few garage door openers, and you have yourself electrical traps on demand...but the materials here can also be used for bomb making.ā€ She clicks her tongue, ā€œBut what's the trigger?ā€

ā€œLasers.ā€ Clemmy voices her opinion.

Samantha gives her a look, ā€œExpensive and less common than you'd think. The floor in the hallway is tiled.ā€ She pulls a small can from her purse, shakes it, and kneels down, spraying a silvery mist across the floor. A puff of breath sends the cloud down the hallway, but little plumes of the smoke cling to certain tiles on the floor, ā€œThis mist is magnetized. As I thought, this isn't someone who wants to cause a lot of noise or tear up their hideout with a ball bearing mine or shoot through the floor of the second story with a plasma rifle trap. A lethal dose of voltage, elegant, sophisticated, and...ā€ She stands up and pushes the door completely open, and you hear a click.

You dive on top of her, pinning her to the floor as something swings by overhead, swings back, and continues to swing, each swing a bit slower than the last. ā€œIt's a paint can.ā€ Clemmy notes cheerfully, ā€œOn a chain.ā€

ā€œOr he could have put in something so simple that anyone expecting a clever trap would be fooled.ā€ Samantha mutters glumly, ā€œA paint can, really!ā€

You look up and down the hallway. To the left, you can see a set of stairs going upwards and downwards, to the right you see a hallway.

ā€œAre you alright?ā€ You ask the small woman. You'd thrown your arms around her when you tackled her, but still, being tackled by you must hurt.

ā€œI'm fine.ā€ Her voice is muffled. ā€œIt's not the first time you've jumped on top of me.ā€

Clemmy snorts and mutters something unkind, Marian snickers.

ā€œ...Well, if the two of you weren't here, we MIGHT just get a room.ā€ Samantha glowers at Clemmy, ā€œUnlike SOME people I can wait that long!ā€

ā€œI'm not ashamed of anything.ā€ Clemmy puffs her chest out proudly, while you help Samantha up, dust her off, and fix her cap back on her head. The dark-haired girl smiles cutely and kisses your cheek before grabbing another can of paint and a brush, popping the top open, dipping the brush inside, and starting to flick paint onto any of the tiles the magnetized mist clung to. She works quickly and efficiently.

Marian examines the paint can flail, and whistles, ā€œThis is full of quik-crete.ā€

ā€œThen I'm especially grateful to Roarke, which he will find out firsthand later.ā€ Samantha huffs, looking embarrassed that her take-charge smart-and-capable-former-Intelligence-officer moment got paintcanned.

ā€œNot if he's with me.ā€ Clemmy interjects gleefully, ā€œWatch out for paint, sneak. I thought you'd be better at detecting traps.ā€

Samantha gives Clemmy a look over her shoulder, and you see her hand move ever so slightly to the tranq-coated narrow throwing blades you know she conceals beneath her sleeve before she thinks better of it and resumes marking the traps in silence.

ā€œSo, what now, boss?ā€ Marian asks.

You look at the stairs, ā€œWe go up. All of the trapped tiles are between us and the steps, and this place is oppressive enough without living in a basement.ā€ You and Samantha take the lead, carefully avoiding the trapped tiles. The stairs are heavily overgrown, you get the impression that whoever lived here was only clearing away what they had to to make it livable, ivy and flowering mosses still wind over the bannister and walls. From the tiled floors and the rather ornate steps, you also get another impression. At one point, this wasn't a slum, but a rather nice neighborhood. You reach the next floor, and Samantha kneels down to examine the ground, ā€œThe dust is so thick here, and there's so much vegetation I can't imagine anyone has been here for years.ā€ She notes, and Clemmy nods in agreement. Acceding to her expertise, you go up again. The third floor seems much the same, except that the corridor has been walled off halfway down, a homemade job, but the fourth...the fourth floor corridor is blocked entirely by quik-crete and an imposing steel door with an old-fashioned lock, likely lugged here from somewhere else. You don't envy whoever had to do that.

>>
>>2256348
to likely act as the conductive. Pure water does not conduct electricity. It is the things in the water that does.
>>
>>2256355
yeah, but pure water is also hard to obtain(and incredibly toxic) and you only need normal tap water to be able to conduct electricity and kill someone. I guess is for improved conductivity but well... i'm overthinking this.

ā€œWeird that he didn't trim away all of the vegetation.ā€ You remark to yourself, looking down at the vines snaking across the floor...and as you do, the light glints just so across what you think is a spiderweb...at first. Your eyes follow it across the floor, to where it disappears into a small, neat hole bored into the wall. Your senses standing on edge, you step over it, and notice that the wall has been moulded outwards a little immediately prior to that point, disguising the row of small, neat nozzles there.

You don't know what comes out of those nozzles. You don't want to know. On the alert for more traps, you make your way down the hallway to the door, with Samantha using her magnetized mist a few more times. She carefully examines the door, then clicks her tongue with a frown, ā€œClever.ā€

ā€œWhat is it?ā€ Clemmy asks as Marian brings up the rear.

ā€œThis keyhole is a fake. I bet if you tried to pick the lock, you'd end up eating a few million volts or triggering some other kind of trap.ā€ She points to the contours of the door, ā€œLook closely.ā€

You do, ā€œ...There's a slot there, for a keycard or something I bet.ā€

She nods, ā€œYeah, whoever did this knew what they were doing, this is a modern door using the facade of an antique one, it plays with your expectations.ā€ She huffs, and puts her hands on her hips. She's wearing her saber today, the little scottish terrier ornament you won for her on this very station long ago still dangling from a delicate silver chain on the pommel, ā€œI don't see a way through, we'll just have to find another way.ā€

You step past her, and put a hand on her shoulder, ā€œHave you ever heard the phrase 'eminent domain'?ā€

She looks at you cautiously, ā€œI'm familiar with its history, but-ā€

Like all little brothers anywhere you feel no guilt about invading your big brother's room. You punch the door so hard it's torn from its hinges and goes flying across the floor of what looks almost like a one-man militia compound on the other side. You dust off your hands, ā€œIf Cassius lives here, that's what he deserves for all those traps, and he'll forgive me. If it isn't him...I will personally apologize and buy a new door.ā€

Marian doesn't say a word about whose fault it might be if he isn't here.

Immediately, you know this isn't Cassius' room. Also, you know why the lower floor was walled off. This entire part of the tenement building has been hollowed out, remade, and reinforced, with some kind of plates on the wall that must dampen sound or prevent scanners from picking up life signs inside, two floors deep. All that's left of the central portion of this floor is a walkway, leading around the central pit to a terminal cluster composed of dozens of consoles showing scenes from all over California Station, and sleeping quarters so spartan that they seem almost an afterthought, with a hammock, washer/dryer, and some modular shelving for clothes. Down below, in the pit, you can see one entire wall is covered again with particle board full of a gridwork of small holes, the kind middle-class dads have in their garages to hang up their tools, into which hooks have been placed supporting a staggering profusion of lethal weaponry from pistols to anti-mech missile launchers.

A blonde-haired man with a rangy appearance and a visible rope scar around his neck turns from where he was halfway through disassembling an energy rifle much nicer-looking than the one the gangbanger had. He jerks a pair of headphones out of his ears, looks past you, and his eyes go wide, ā€œYou!ā€ He manages to get out...before you hear the sound of something hitting the ground at your feet. You look down, and spot a small, metallic ball covered in blunt little protrusions, gas hissing out of them into a choking cloud that surrounds you and the girls.

You twist your body, and see Marian holding the breather mask from the first room of the tenement building over her mouth, locking the seals firmly in place. She winks at you. You struggle to move towards her, but it feels like walking in a dream, like your limbs are swathed in thick blankets made of lead. You hear a dull thud, and realize you've fallen to your knees. Out of the corner of your eye, you see Samantha collapsed in a heap,

You hear a muffled roar, and Clemmy surges past you, whipping her belt off. In her hands, the memory-alloy strip of metal stiffens into a slender sword...then she twists as a dart hits her between the shoulderblades. Your head slowly swivels, and you see the blonde man holding a needle pistol. He looks angry. He starts to speak, but the words are muddled, like sunlight reflected in an oily puddle. The ground feels cool against your cheek, and you wonder how long you've been prone for...but you don't wonder for long. You're unconscious moments later.

Sasuga. Though it seems she is less interested in Roarke than in getting to this man.

>I am just tired of all these damn assassins
Well no one in their right mind is going to go in a straight match against someone who can punch out Mechs.
>>
>>2256518
i think its more like:
>Decide to intentionally fall into the trap, even if it wasn't for us.
>>
>>2256518
Well she's in for it now when we wake up.
>>
>>2256521
Yes, but at the same time, with how many times this has happened and both clemmy and Sammy not trusting her, the moment she had that ball out should have triggered their instincts. We got them to handle traps and ambushes like this situation.
>>
>>2256536
>We got them to handle traps and ambushes like this situation.
Things fall through the cracks, I don't know why its so hard for you to just accept we need to stop letting potential enemies close to us and letting anyone join Phaeton. Yes we need people but the way were doing this is clearly not working.
>>
>>2256538
Because we do it every way and it's not working! We tighten recruitment? People get through. We make sure it's people we know? People get through. Allies who stick by us the longest? People get through. They even hide as corpses. We could tighten it so that they have to wear bomb chokers and I bet some would just Saiba Men it or get through.
At this point I don't even care for protecting because clearly protection, having experts and experiencing multiple times in one day doesn't work.
>>
>>2256549
What did Marianne do to prove she was loyal to us? Did we ever check her background?
>>
>>2256553
Miles vouched for her as being the person she claimed to be and a "friendly"
>>
>>2256553

You confirmed the existence of a Marian Nemo as the niece of the former proprietor of the Winking Sun tavern, and to prove she was loyal she sold out an awful lot of Five Man Band troops to their deaths and shot another assassin.

The real stickler is that you had an option to just say NO to this trap or suggest she walk in front or something at any point here. Even despite that you still got a roll to avoid it, at a smaller penalty than you'd take for getting whacked with a stun baton and despite the fact that normally knockout drugs in this system work by more harsh rules. Plus, people assumed that because Marian looked like a friendly NPC that she was a friendly NPC, she wasn't someone Roarke knew well or anything.
>>
>>2256560
And Miles is one of our best information brokers. We also have Karen who we suggested to watch us, hopefully through the sunglasses, in case this would happen.
So we cannot even trust double checking through someone who is our best at this.
>>2256562
Yes, but thats why other people were brought with us as well and perparations were made. Other sets of eyes to keep an eye on thing. Karen to have contact with us so we can have back up or eyes.
Also, didn't our sunglasses have a way for us to look behind us? Because I am certain thats a feature Karen gave to us.
>>
>>2256516
>with every single trap we seen so far and our constant issue with assassins
I think that's the problem. It's been 90% of our time as Roarke. I've been hoping/expecting something else to happen, but no.
>>
>>2256573
As Roarke since the wedding, rather. Sorry I forgot that.
>>
>>2256571

You can't learn everything about someone in a day, even with Miles, and I not only don't remember anyone ever suggesting Karen watch through your sunglasses, I'm pretty sure that's not even a feature because she doesn't want to watch you ogle Red Siren.

>>2256573

Wait, dealing with assassins has been 90% of your time as Roarke?
>>
>>2256578
We go to the summit, play as Meridian, get 3 or 4 posts at the summit. Maybe 5.

Go to see Oda for downtime. Assassin.

>>
>>2256518
>>decide to trust the girl who obviously enjoys torturing
And I was called paranoid when everyone was arguing to recruit her when I said she's a psycho
>>
>>2256578
I have been constantly saying 'make sure there is a way Karen has surveilence on us' and I never got a answer. >>2240509
And the glasses do indeed have the ability to see behind us. "I didn't think you'd want them to look too fancy, but I was able to add a lot of functionality. It's not a full ASP, but they have night vision capabilities, zoom functionality, full infrared and UV detection, automatically adjust for brightness to a truly remarkable degree, and if you hit this little button here you can see what's behind you.".
As for the learning, it's not learning everything, it's learning enough that the person doesn't act like some super deep cover agent. Meridian had that issue and there was the previous geisha to consider. 'Something seems up' would catch our attention. Likewise, I don't think anyone aside from Thunderbird would think of having her go head first into a trap, because thats how you get betrayals.. and people sending you into a trap.
>>2256605
Clemmy enjoys torture. We recruited and married her.
>>
>>2256579

That's a good point, would you feel better if I told you that a flurry of assassination attempts after Roarke's ascension to Pirate Kinghood was planned for a long time, culminating in this? Get through it, prove that assassination attempts do not work on Roarke Starwind even with stacked odds, and the next step is interstellar war on Monbash and Dwakim. Consider just how much had to be sacrificed to give Marian this shot at you, an entire fleet was wiped out, ace pilots lost, two pretty good assassins...one of whom is now a captive...and you'll see that this couldn't be anything else. I do thank you for your patience, though.
>>
>>2256614
It makes sense to Have a flurry of assassination attempts at this point in the story
Lots of vested interest in having our fledgling kingdom fall apart and have the belt fall into hands of other parties
>>
>>2256609

It might be a good idea to press that button when you think it's necessary in the future, then. You're under a few misapprehensions about Karen having enough free time to watch you when you're around other women AND run the mechbay, but if you bring it up to her she might be willing.

As for Marian, I'm not budging on that in the slightest. The players chose to go with her with a small group after only knowing her for a day or so and having only the most minimal possible information about her, likely on the expectation that there's no problem that can't be punched. Meridian infiltrated the crew early, really early, and the geisha had special circumstances that will come out during her interrogation. "Something seems up" would indeed catch your attention, but it is something you are ABSOLUTELY not entitled to after knowing someone for only a short time period...and even then, Roarke wasn't trusting her for a good while, the players voted that the possibility of Triple C was worth the risk, and so this happened. People got cocky and recruitment-happy, which is a normal thing to happen.

As for Clemmy, she's a bit more complicated than that.
>>
>>2256616

On the bright side, think of what this will do for your reputation if you make it out of this.
>>
>>2256616

Also while it does make sense I can understand it being a bit tedious, I suppose it's lucky it took this long and made it this far. I can't in good conscience count mecha fights on an active battlefield as assassins, though, even if they got a halfway decent ambush off. I don't really consider Meridian an assassin either, since when he and Roarke actually fought it was pretty straightforward.
>>
>>2256614
Thank fucking god. I might participate now, it got so annoying and old I couldn't make myself anymore.

Please don't do this again.
>>
>>2256626

>>

>>
>>2256562
Dude I said at the beginning that Cass could either take care of himself or come get us when he wanted to.

This whole trip was just about Roarkes ego.
>>
>>2256609
>Clemmy enjoys torture. We recruited and married her.
And I was not here for that. They are different people and were encountered in wildly different situations and circumstances.

At least I'm glad I was right and the idiots who wanted to hire her on as an officer got told
>>
Man, what a huge mistake.
Well... It kind of was bound to happen sooner or later... Things were going too well to be true.
Now... it seems that she has some agenda more complex than just killing us if she didn't put a bullet through our heads yet.... And I got to say that I'm more afraid for the girls than for Roarke himself at this point, but as far we know this won't be an easy escape... Lets admit it, when was the last time we were truly vulnerable in front of an enemy like this? Never.

I guess we should brace for impact.
>>
>>2256927
I'm expecting a metal gear style torture. Rev up those turbo controllers!

I just hope it means people are going to get it through their heads that healthy suspicion is not paranoia and maybe they should not shout down anyone who suggests caution.

Roarke is a king now, his life had a different meaning and importance than from back when we could solve everything by being a smug shit, punching or punching from inside a mech
>>
>>2256948
I wonder if they are planning on crippling him.
Or if we will have to play with another character in order to rescue him.
Imagine a rescue team made up of the Lorriette/Rosita duo...
>>
>>2256998
I'm sure they would simply go in with overwhelming force and shout like maniacs on open frequencies the whole time

I'm curious what Marian's motivation is. She's young, so it's probably a personal grudge rather than some kind of grand plan. Or she's a disposable asset who is working for a promise.

I'm disappointed, really. In the players and the characters. It's like I really have to forgo sleep to keep people from making objective and obvious mistakes and poor decisions

Really though the thing that makes me chuckle is the staggering amount of foreshadowing we've had. From the get-go we knew Cassius was dead. Cabot boasted and she wasn't the type to say things like that when she felt triumphant and confident which was basically her 24/7 because she was arrogant. We have had no indication to the contrary that he could be alive. But then suddenly out of the blue this random woman says she has this rumor that not only says Cassius is alive, but it narrows his supposed location down to the very building he's in. Now despite her having this information absolutely no one on our end had heard a peep of this rumor. On top of that Roarke himself knew it was fishy and thought as much at first but naturally decided it was worth investigating. Then comes when we get here and this not so subtle hints keep dropping, like Clemmy saying how she didn't this Cassius would be in a place like this, or how Roarke had said "if this isn't his door he'll pay for it" which in context doesn't seem so bad but it is an odd thing to think right at the last second instead of thinking say "I'm going to hug the heck out of Cassius when I see him".

I get it, "in character" and what not but we did have the option of starting to change Roarke's character to make him less hot-headed and brash. Hopefully know we can agree on less hastily enacted plans. Though I admit no small curiosity in this man. Not often you see a man walk away from the noose. It's a pity they're both probably going to end up dead.

View this as a good moment for varactor development and maybe a change to play style so retards can't go "B-b-b-but it's what character would do".

like next time maybe we can not take the bait ourselves like a a baity baiterson and he independent confirmation or something.

The players have no-one to blame for this but themselves.

Nobody was even concerned it was a green man plot since they clone and revive people.
>>
>>2258896
Might as well just spend all of our time in the mech then, since apparently we can't do anything without someone or something trying to fuck us over.

The constant paranoia we have to suffer is draining. I miss the earlier carefree days of this quest.
>>
>>2258989
Bet Roarke misses those days as well.
>>
>>2258989
I miss it too, the time when we could micromanage our number of harpies...
>>
>>2258989
It's not paranoia because some of us do their darnedest every day to put us in easily avoidable situations. Other players are more dangerous than any of Wong's antagonists

We could just have said no, let someone investigate and get on with important things. I suggested we put her under surveillance and tap her comms and I get insulted for being 'paranoid' citing that we are a pirate and our crew were criminals. For that reason we are supposed to take the stupid and rash decisions at every opportunity, because forethought and analysis is for pussies who don't have dead brothers.
>>
>>2259269
If we survive this, from now on we are goin to send secondary character into these "outside of mech high risk" missions.
We have a lot of capable crew to do that, and even not couting our aces and specialists we still have a bunch of named A-Crew that could put up a fight.

I told you guys that going on this mission was a bad idea...
>>
>>2259433
B-but Muh character acts liek this!! He obviously hasnĀ“t had any sort of character development in all this time!!

>>
Who from our named crew would be best fitted to these on feet higly-risky missions?
Captains and waifus can't be chosen as they are also too valuable to risk.

What of it? The whole *quest* has been about Roarke's ego, why would that change all of a sudden?

>>2261951
WE SHOULD NAME... EVERYOOOOOOOOONE!
Named people have better chance at surviving, and are usually the most trustable one in our crew (trusty and usefull enough for us to know their names at least).

I also believe that we should have a "Inteligence and Infiltration" squad for this type of things(The UJCIDF have the Amos trio), but it would take some time to train them if Sam wasn't already training people out of screen.
>>
...And then Roarke lost for the first time and everyone dropped the quest.

THE END.
>>
>>2265825
OR! We're all just waiting for Tuesday.

I'm staying for sure at least. Honestly I almost ENJOY failure like this in a quest. It's an honest to god fault of the players for one thing, instead of getting damned by RNGesus.

Second, we haven't even been permanently crippled or had anyone die. They knocked us out instead which is a good sign. It's possible they want to talk to us, or try to turn us to their side. It's unlikely they're Avalonian or Jupes. If they ARE 5-man Band, though, that isn't too bad since they are insane idealists. So it might be one of them that wants to face us in single combat. OR, if Wong is REALLY a cunt, he's gonna pull the "Which wife will you save" card on us and they'll give us a trolley problem.

Note: If that DOES happen, we can possibly talk them out of it by undermining their concept of whatever the test is supposed to prove. Possibly. They might have set it up so they CAN'T stop it themselves. Idealists do stupid shit like that. But the point is that we have to think inside their box, not just outside of ours. They can do anything they can justify with their ideals, but in turn they can't be at all flexible about them if we can corner them by their own logic.

TL;DR You can't reason with crazy, but you can out-crazy it.

Personally though I suspect they're part of yet another faction. Maybe Earth. Maybe just one of the factions on Earth, we don't know how Earth works. Maybe a Pirate group or some isolated group in the Belt. Maybe a Colonial force. Maybe just retired adventurers from the War who stay in touch and want to know if their ruler is just a Strongman Populist that will be a tyrant or whatever.
>>

>Second, we haven't even been permanently crippled or had anyone die.
YET.

>OR, if Wong is REALLY a cunt, he's gonna pull the "Which wife will you save" card on us and they'll give us a trolley problem.
My biggest fear.

>They can do anything they can justify with their ideals, but in turn they can't be at all flexible about them if we can corner them by their own logic.
People who belive in contradictions can't usually be cornered while they just don't accept that they are wrong, no matter how much obviously wrong they are.
Once I knew this guy who refused to accept logic itself because he believe that everything may be wrong, including the whole concept of truth and of existence. He also said that he believed in science and that he was a Buddhist....

The worst kind of blindness is not wanting to see.

>TL;DR You can't reason with crazy, but you can out-crazy it.
In my experience this usually leads to mutual destruction as both sides try to meta shitpost each other to death no matter what it takes... There is a point where both of you don't belive in anything you are saying anymore but you've gone too far to back down.

>Personally though I suspect they're part of yet another faction.
I had assumed that the 5MB would have just killed Roarke... But they may be wanting to make a show out of it, so I really don't know.
>>
>>2266569
> Yet

Time to play smarter. Never trust dice.

> Trolley Problem

Honestly, it's kind of a hack cliche to use here. Especially since our wives are just as capable as us, if not more so in certain situations. Sorry, that should be DEFINITELY in MANY situations. They aren't damsels in distress.

> They can do anything they can justify with their ideals, but in turn they can't be at all flexible about them if we can corner them by their own logic.

> People who belive in contradictions can't usually be cornered while they just don't accept that they are wrong, no matter how much obviously wrong they are.

See, that's the thing. They knowingly and intentionally chose to act "insane". They aren't crazy like a schizophrenic, they've instead decided that reality is wrong and they would rather die then bend to it. Either the current paradigm breaks, or they do. Since they view themselves as defined by the current paradigm due to considering it something they created, they don't see a place for themselves in it anyways. So death or even failure isn't really a concern for them, because they are already failures from their perspective as they were unable to make something better.

> Once I knew this guy who refused to accept logic itself because he believe that everything may be wrong, including the whole concept of truth and of existence.

You knew an asshole, but I'm not going to rag on a first year philosophy student. Let's talk about the 5-man band. They don't exactly hold a set of ideals as in values, nor as a standard of perfection or excellence. Like I said, they already consider themselves unable to fit into the future they're trying to create. Their "ideal" is the goal of creating that future, so they are more than willing to immediately reverse their position, betray alliances, whatever the moment they run into a contradiction.

Like I said, though, we will have to frame our argument in their context of creating their vision of the future, shattering the big governments and having heroes fighting little wars with big guns so it doesn't lower the property values and local population. They want to personalize war, to never again turn men into numbers to be spent or saved according to the calculations of masters insulated from the horrors they send others into so that they can hold on to power, to gain or retain wealth, for political advantage, or just to not have to admit they may have wronged someone.

>TL;DR You can't reason with crazy, but you can out-crazy it.

Okay, see, it doesn't work if you're just randomly crazy at the person and double down on pulling in the opposite direction.

A good example is a woman who had an unreasonable fear whenever she left her house that she had left her curling iron on, due to her parents house having an electrical fire. She would drive off, and within 10 minutes have to go back to confirm she unplugged it - and even then all day she would worry if she had REALLY unplugged it and go back to check at lunch or even during work if she got too anxious.

Checklists didn't help, nor did having a routine, or getting another person in the household to check on it for her. Meditation, CBT, even medication wasn't adequate at reasonable doses for controlling her anxiety about her curling iron.

When her psychiatrist noted that she wasn't improving no matter what techniques she tried to control her anxiety and reassure her, she didn't "double down" on her position that the woman was unplugging her curling iron. She didn't insist either that the woman trust the checklists and routines etc. Instead she said "Why don't you just take the curling iron with you when you leave the house." That way she could just look and see that it was there, and KNOW that it hadn't been left plugged in.

See, it's not about convincing people that they're wrong. It's about finding a way to let them convince themselves.

Some crazy homeless dude comes up to you, starts shouting at you that you're "one of them", you don't try to convince him you aren't. Instead you accuse HIM of being one of "them" and then you ask how you can tell he isn't. Then whatever reason he gives, you just agree with it as being reasonable and say that's the same reason you aren't one of them.

Quite frankly, if our Wives are at risk I don't give a damn about proving them "wrong", just that it's "wrong" by their logic to hurt our wives.

> Personally though I suspect they're part of yet another faction.

> I had assumed that the 5MB would have just killed Roarke... But they may be wanting to make a show out of it, so I really don't know.

But they don't want to kill Roarke. They want to test him, and forge a Hero for their new age. One among many, though, so if we break then oh well.

Think of them as the Joker. They could give us a trolley problem just to force us not to choose someone, but to acknowledge that some choices have to be made. You know? To acquaint us with not just loss, but a zero-sum situation where success just isn't possible. Maybe some bullshit about inevitability, or a lesson that the 5-man band considers the galaxy to be in that situation, that some losses have to be accepted - which ironically they are doing all this because they find THAT to be unacceptable. Maybe something about us having a personal loss, the price of power and position. Who knows, it depends highly on which member we encounter.
