Well. You can't say you haven't been in this situation before, but it's never pleasant. As you stare the mob boss down across the desk, who’s trying to appear less intimidated then she really is. You can’t blame her, though. She’s the one trying to get out ahead canceling the contract.

Hello, gangstars, and welcome back to Magical Girl for Hire!

You are Miranda Styles, a relatively unscrupulous magical girl currently working for Silver Eye Solutions, a umbrella corporation for magical girl mercenaries such as yourself, located in scenic The Intersection, a dimensional nowhere and everywhere where you rest, recuperate, live, and get details for your next job.

Currently, you're on- WERE on- a job in a slightly modern the world that involves you absolutely annihilating a mob family- at the behest of a rival mob family who's boss is enamored with a young detective sort that the first family apparently is cross with. She's just that in love with him that she wants the rivals erased from existence.

At least riiiight up until now. After killing the leader of the Giogionne Crime Family- although with a number of lieutenants still at large- you’ve come back to Carmel, only for her to want the contract ended, due to lack of ability to pay in full.

With the Royal Army now crawling through the city, she claims she needs the remaining funds to stage her getaway, and is willing to pay you two-thirds of what’s owed, plus a number of sigils, some rare, some not. You've argued that you wanted the means of production itself, but she seems less than willing- or truly able- to fork that over. Instead, she is offering to retrieve a number of high-level instructive booklets, at her own risk, in order to placate you.

Which leaves you with a choice to make.

>Accept. You’ll go with them, even, just to be fair about it.
>Accept- but you’re not doing anything else for them from here on.
>Decline- you might be able to go elsewhere yourself.
>Decline entirely- you’ll take it out on her hide.

Hey folks. Baaack.

You've already made your decision in your head, but your face is an expressive. The only thing that clues them into that fact is when you lean back and give a soft sigh. You can see her tense up as soon as you open your mouth. “Fine. That’s acceptable.”

And just like that said tension in the room seems to drain away entirely. Carmel in particular seems to visibly sag with relief, almost slumping against the desk. “Thanks, great. So, our guy has a lot of reference books that he uses- we’ll free those up for you, and then you can be on your way.” She starts to motion a couple of her men away, but everything stops again when you get up.

“I’ll be going, too,” you mention, picking up the briefcases as you stand. “Just to make sure everything is collected properly.”

You're not so caught up in the ideas of what to do with your potential future sigils that you don't notice the looks of concern coming from everyone in the room as you head out.

The drive there already seems like it's shorter than normal, but to be fair the lot of you are booking it at well over the speed limit- which is understandable considering that as soon as any military force saw them they probably be peppered with gunfire and probably a few other things besides.

Fortunately, the drive there is uneventful besides that, and you and your entourage are quick to enter the building, which seems to have been spared a large portion of the fighting.

augh, thanks.

To your surprise, as you enter the waiting room, you see that a number of individuals that have taken refuge, largely a smaller family and a couple of more scruffy-looking individuals you can only assume were street urchins that got caught in between the whole mess. Most of them are huddled in a corner, or otherwise seemingly unconcerned, although the urchins seem to eye you worriedly as you walk though- a mother had taken one look at you and your group and immediately move to huddle up against her children. The building itself reeks of the smell of metal and something burning, which you suppose makes sense, and for something that has a fancy alabaster white brick exterior, it looks particularly rustic on the inside.

Stepping down the hall, you pass by a number of open doors, a couple of them seemingly work areas or something of the sort, in various states of production. The men don’t stop, however- you’re quickly lead through a pair of doors at the end of the hallway until you reach what seems to be a small shelf area with a number of books. “Here ya go,” one of the men says quickly. “Take your pick and hurry up.”

...They really shouldn't be rushing you, but nonetheless you start scrounging. You don't exactly have time to read more than the covers, but off of the bat you can see three that seem to be useful: ‘Common Sigils and Uncommon Craft Methods’, ‘History of Sigilcraft’, and ‘Sigil Encyclopedia’. As for the rest, you'll take a better look at them later. One by one you quickly stuff them into your oversized purse, to the impatient tapping of the Giogionne men.

As fun as it might have been to clear them all out, you can't say you're exceptionally disappointed with the haul. Hopefully this will come in handy sooner than later- goodness knows Owlia will likely get a kick out of it.

Well...nothing else for it.

You quickly spin around, pointing a single finger at the Lucienta man in the lead, and the lot of them immediately jump back, yelping like young dogs.

There's a moment of pause between the lot of you, and they don’t even seem to realize as you grin. “Thanks for the business. Later!”

And you’re gone.

As the familiar form of your headquarters takes over your site, you have to admit that you're rather happy to see it again. You're not exactly one who needs a whole lot of creature comforts, but you do enjoy yourself some technology. You're going to be taking some time to appreciate that before you head back out into a lower tech world again…

As you pass the break room, stretching and thinking about the long bath you're going to take, you find your gauges wondering to the right. To your surprise, you see a couple of familiar faces sitting around- Mono and Izumi. They’re chatting, and they seem to be laughing together, with Izumi pointing something out on a date a tablet to Mono, who seems surprised, if pleasantly so. You suppose that's a positive.

It seems the two of them notice you, too, as Izumi turns to you and quickly waves, while Mono gives you a glance and a lazy two-finger salute. You just wave back- you're going to have a lot of stuff to take care of in the next couple of days, and before you do any of that, you’re gonna unwind a bit…

As you submerse yourself in the hot water, you finally let your mind wander a bit. Well, now you’ve got some you time. There’s a lot to take care of, and you should put your thoughts in order…

After deciding on what's going on occupy your time for the next few days starting tomorrow, you promptly remove any and all thoughts of work out of your mind for the remainder of your time. You're not going to worry about anything until you wake up. In fact, you think you have some leftover pasta alfredo in the fridge but you should really polish off…

The next day, you wake up in your own bed, and you give yourself the luxury of a rare, sincere smile before you allow the idea of what you need to do to drag it back down. You're really not a big fan of this whole ‘being responsible for people other than yourself’ thing.

Damnit if it doesn’t stir an old nerve, though…need to kill it one of these days.

Maybe.

Ignoring your own thoughts, you eventually get yourself breakfast and decide to go ahead and find Owlia and Cylica. The latter should probably we doing her consulting thing at the moment, while the former, you have no clue. Still, knowing what you do about her. You gather up a couple of the basic sigil books and a pair of the simpler looking sigils in a bag, and set out. The problem will be finding her- she could be in Crystalock with Cylica, or she maybe-

“Whoa!” And like that, the question answers itself as you round the corner of the apartment complex and nearly collide with the pale, awkward scientist outright. “Ahahah, oh, hi! Hi there! Uh, been a few days, I uh, I was told you were out, on a job, I mean. I mean, I was, too, I went on one, it was very pleasant aside from the whole ‘we want to change the deal because we’re pretty sure you ripped us off!’ bit and then there was a lot of yelling and burning and- well I’m rambling sorry, lemme calm down!” Yikes.

She takes a single, deep breath, and then looks you in the eye. “Hey, boss. What can I help you with?”

Okay, as long as she’s calm. “Well…I wanted to talk with you about something I found on my last job.” You quickly pick out a sigil from your bag, and show it to her. “This is a sigil. These things were pretty powerful when I had to deal with them. Reminded me of your work. Figured I'd gather up a few and bring them to you, see what you could do with them.”

She’s quick to take the sigil from your hand, and she begins studies it intentionally, which largely only consist of her staring at it very very closely.

...it’s been five minutes. She’s still staring at it. And slowly, ever so slowly, she starts tilting it..

Yes. That's 'Contributed to the HQ', so yeah.

Cylica and Owlia are making money, but to be fair, they're basically working two jobs.
>>
>>2265811
One question. what was the difference between one large mote and a normal mote? 10 normal motes made a large one?
Also, i think you misnamed the currencies on the HQ upgrade list. some of them are in Large motes while others are in normal motes.
>>
>>2265869
100 small = 1 large.

Did I? Hm.
>>
>>2265876
That would mean that in the time it takes Izumi to make 20 motes, Cyclica would have made 3500 motes (35 Large Motes), and Owlia would make 6000 motes (60 Large Motes) because of their second jobs.
>>

As strange as it is, you recognize that she's deep in thought, and out of your own curiosity and simple politeness you decide to let her finish. She ends up tilting the sigil before too long, spinning the entire thing a full 360 degree rotation...a slow and elaborate process that, upon looking closer, you can see is her analyzing each and every crevice of the sigil. As she finishes it, you suddenly realize that you've been looking at an odd angle, and you quickly realize that you actually ended up tilting your head along with her.

It takes another minute or so of her squinting at it before suddenly her eyes widen a bit, and she looks at you. “Seems like this was made mechanically, not by hand. The curves are too smooth, and there's a regularity in the width to depth ratio that tells me that this was machine made.” You not an confirmation of her hypothesis. “Don't know if I would be able to replicate it with my own tools, at least not without a lab, but I can certainly try. It seems that the regularity is necessary for the power output, if this works how I hypothesize it would. I'd LOVE to run some experiments on these...”

You reach into your bag again. “Well, I do have books…”

“Gimme please!” Of course. Although thinking about it, she did mention something that’d you’d noticed was a recurring theme about her…

A thought comes to you as you begin walking with her, looking over your finances.“Say, Owlia, do you mind meeting with me later today? Say, this evening? I want to go over some financial issues with you and the rest of the team. Going to want everyone's input.”

“Huh?” She's clearly still thinking about the sigil and what it could be used for. It takes her second to shake herself out of her intellectual stupor. “O-oh, yeah, sure!” she's rather quick to nod, and... That's about it actually, it seems like she's far too interested in figuring out what's going on with the sigils to really bother talking very much.

Still, it's progress. Hopefully you'll be able to order that laboratory tonight. They've been talking up all the stuff they can use it for so much that you can't help but be a little bit excited to see just how they'll be able to put it to use.

Her nose is stuck in that book until she makes it home, upon which the both of you bid each other a short yet friendly goodbye. You’ll be seeing her again this evening anyway…

...Or sooner than that, as not 10 seconds later the door suddenly bursts back open and Owlia rockets out, feet moving a mile a minute and her mouth moving faster.

Not sure what's got her in a tizzy, but whatever it is you hope she gets to it quick enough.

For the difficulty and bragging rights when we get back to Intersect, a world that has anti-magic areas as part of the geography, or as a skill commonly used by the people.

>Future world
Miranda experienced sci-fi settings before, but we haven't yet. And maybe we'll get to upgrade Flamebringer into a +1 laser/plasma sword. Maybe rename it 'Starbringer' or something.

And for basic mission premise idea:

>Warden
Foil a criminal mastermind's escape attempts until his trial. Extra stipulation: don't grievously harm him so he's still fit to go to court.

Thoughts?

>Villain Cleanup
A wealthy “concerned citizen” has had enough with super villains running amok every week, breaking out of jail just to kill again, and the superheroes of the world refusing to kill these mass murderers.
The client wants these menaces put down permanently.

Narrative Rider: wherever possible the villain is to be executed using mundane means, to drive home the message that the mundanes of the world are fed up being the prey for superpowered criminals. Exceptions will be made for certain supers that require magical means to kill.

Limited Collateral Damage Rider: no civilian casualties. Supers, both heroes and villains, are fair game.
>>

Mooks are to be executed as well.
Family of villains are also open game, if they haven’t disavowed their villainous relative.

A hero has been chosen...and has been found wanting. Whether through lack of conviction or just plain weakness they cannot see the prophecy fulfilled. I love the premise, but it's pretty similar to our last mission.

Personally, at some point I want to work directly with a contemporary military at some point. Storming beaches with the ground pounders or specops stuff with special forces, I like the idea of miranda working with soldiers, unsettling them with her appearance, powers, and attitude.
>>
>>2267663
>Does our strength come from magic though?
Yes, it does. It’s the Body Enhancement magic we have constantly turned on.

If we’re going to an anti-magic world, we need to stock up on things we never considered getting before, like armor and force fields, and things that were low on our priority shopping list, like nano-medkits.

Isn't that pretty much what we did on the first group job with Mono? We were hired by an organization to kill a super villain cause 1) he was killing the shit out of the heroes and 2) the heroes didn't want to kill him. They expressed interest in repeat business too.

Also Handler I was wondering, the Intersection has an entertainment district, is it kind of an all-you-can-eat inter planar buffet of cool shit or are there limits to what can be done or what the Dealmakers will allow?
Is it possible for people to go on holidays to approved worlds? I'm thinking about the poor saps who are born in this place, do they really need to become Outgoers to stretch their legs? We should hit up a travel agency one of these days. I've also had an idea make Mono to freelance as an entertainer. Without her troupe stage plays are off but I'll eat my shoes if she isn't perfect for parties.

Also allow us to have retroactively used the Futuresight to make a camrip of Mono's mission. For almost the whole day today I've had this idea stuck in my mind where the girls sit down to watch it, like a MST3K episode.

we could also combine it with cylica´s mind warping technique to create something better

I think the main problem with Anti-magic is the fact that it would... quite litteraly kill us I think?
Or at least put us into some sort of coma.
That's what I remember at least, so straight up Anti-magic would be a nogo. Others would be far better for the job, like Mono, as they don't really do MAGIC, just... warping of reality.

If I remember right, while technically possible, it isn't cheap to jump to and from the Intersection, which means even if you're wealthy, it's motes down the drain to jump, which the Dealmakers would frown on. Though, it would open up the possibility of wealthy clients hitching a ride with outgoers on jobs for a little extra on the side.

>spoiler
Assuming she'd be up for it, there have to be tropes already in the Intersection she could join. It'd wouldn't make her much, but I bet she'd enjoy entertaining other again.
>>
>>2267846
>Isn't that pretty much what we did on the first group job with Mono
That was just one villain that was too dangerous for their own superheroes to go after. They wanted a brute squad that was also expendable, so as to not endanger their own supers.

I’m thinking more along the lines of someone who finally wants the Joker and entire Rogues Galleries dead, and he’s willing to see superheroes dead if it means getting the job done.
It might even be a super genius and super rich villain deciding that the playing field is too crowded, or wants to see how the world reacts to permanent solutions.
>>
What about a hitjob from a Fae Court?
Then when they try to twist the contract in their favor after the job is done, we could get to see one eldritch entity get on the bad side of an entire company of eldritch entities.
>>
>>2267917
From what we've seen, if a client tries to contract screw us, we are the ones that enforce it. But if we're unable, would the dealmakers step in, considering the value outgoers provide to the Intersection?

It would be amusing to see Fae get rolled over by the Dealmakers though.
>>
>>2267917
i think it would also be amusing to do the oposite; accept a contract from demons. But not just any kind of demon, but the bureocratic kind that are lawful evil and need 10 piles of paperwork to aprove something.

Souls are the one line that Miranda doesn’t cross (unless the payout is stupidly huge, and even then she may balk).

Well, with that mostly settled for later tonight, that frees up the rest of your day to do whatever you might like. You really probably should get back into training, and properly figure out the adhesive qualities of your mana, but honestly, a surprisingly strong part of you figures it can wait for at least another day. You're still feeling a little bit exhausted. In fact, you can probably do for a ride around, if only to rest your head…

Before long, you're out on Red and racing through the streets, headed toward nowhere in particular. Almost without noticing you find yourself breathing a sigh of relief. How long has it been since you just gotten on the road and drove for the sake of driving? You know this place has grown since you arrived here, but you don't think you've really taken the time lately to stop and see any of the new land. It always started as just a blob of shaped motes, guarded and blocked from anyone walking into it or near it. Then, over time, it took shape into something simple, natural. Dirt and grass, trees and stone. All the basics. Things would progress from there, then, getting people to cut it, shape it, mold it into something that could be used for construction and expansion. Some places, you know, were left as is- if only for the sake of allowing a bit of ‘nature’ to show up in The Intersection, but by and large majority of it was resources. Always resources.

The flashing lights and bright colors of the festival district fly by you as you swing through traffic- advertisements galore race into and out of your vision from either side of the street, people of all walks of life carousing and regaling in the cornucopia of sensation. Some are doing it sincerely, the wonderment and ever-growing assortment of new things to do and try and be treating them well, as though it were a paradise of pleasures. Some have familiar, sullen eyes, hearts already torn and unhappy, but taking part in the festivities all the same, treating the eternal glee like a salve, a bandage, to hide the pain of how they got here. Many tended to start as of the first, before becoming the second. Luckier ones never lost that first lust for life.

Before you stew in your own thoughts much longer, you have to hit the brakes, as you find yourself standing at the edge of what is paved ground, the enticing attractions and show buildings slowing to a crawl, before there is nothing but simple pavement. In the distance you can see workers. Loggers and carpenters and all sorts, cutting down trees and laying land and preparing for new buildings for whatever purpose the Deal-Makers or their subordinates might desire.

Honestly, you have to admit that you kind of have to remind yourself from time to time that there's a lot more to this place than just Outgoer work, food, and booze. As dense a city this is, it's jam-packed with just about anything anyone could want to do or see or purchase, and even then it's getting bigger all the time.

Kind of makes you wonder what the big plan is. How big do they expect this city to get? How big do they WANT it to get?

After a bit of staring at the people doing their work, you shake your head and turn back. Maybe you should try to take advantage of the place for more than just team bar crawls...

The idea of expansion makes you think just how many people are living in this little slice of nowhere and everywhere. There's a ton of kids here- actual children, not people arrested in time like you. Kids like that needed guidance, and while for some preschool or elementary school was fine for some, others that weren't born here, or otherwise ‘found’ themselves or brought themselves here through no fault of their own usually went through the Care House, to learn how The Intersection- their world now- worked, and all the basic things they could learn to contribute.

Because everyone contributed.

It’s been a long time since you've been back there... Although you were one of the ones that had checked themselves in voluntarily when you first arrived, as opposed to having someone seek you out or otherwise getting forced into it. It hadn't lasted too long, and you had made any friends, but you still remember the experience.

White, sterile walls.

Classrooms that all looked at the same, with a single digital large screen and teachers you'd come to realize were holographic AI with personalities.

At least the food was decent. Not good. Just decent.

Despite the aesthetics, the Care House was very good at what it did, by all accounts. It educated you, no matter how supposedly stupid you were, and it would find something for you that you excelled at, even at a young age; whether menial, physical, creative, or whatever. It usually took a little bit of time, but you would be a productive member of society before long, guaranteed.

As you drive up to the place that you called home for a year, you have to crane your head up in order to take in the entire building at once, the massive white building easily towering over other buildings in the Learner’s District, and one of the few where transplants wouldn't get a look. The logo of the Care House, whimsical text in all colors of the rainbow, it's still just like you remember.

The Care House, you also suspect, never was really just a ‘house’.

As you park your cycle in the packed lot, you find yourself taking oddly trepid steps up to the lobby- not shaky, but slow, cautious. You’re not certain why. Might be because it's the first time you've been back here in 70-odd years. Maybe.

The lobby still has those plush burgundy couches and that gentle ‘Welcome... to the Care House!’ automated voice with the pause that you thought was odd even when you first showed up. To your surprise, it seems like there’s something going on; there’s a number of older people here too- several in common career-wear, like chef’s garb, construction work again, and some crafters, too, in their smocks and brandishing small toolboxes…

One of the loiters is a girl with rather long, pink, zig-zagged hair that you swear you’ve seen somewhere before...likely an Outgoer. To your left behind a closed off receptionist area is the front desk worker, who you THINK was there when you started-

“Ohhh! Miranda! Miranda Styles, how have you been? It’s been so long!” The long-haired, platinum blond with the supermodel body and one-piece uniform smiles like she's an old friend- which in her mind she very well might be- and waves. “Have you come back to help out the youth for today’s Career Exploration Day?”

What? Career Exploration Day? That was happening right now? Huh. You vaguely remember that- it was mostly just a bunch of people with various different careers coming into show what they did all the time and seeing if any of the kids clicked with it. If they did, they do take them on a day shadowing what they did to see for certain.

You hadn't actively participated when you were here. You already knew what YOU were going to be doing. But at the same time...you don’t recall an Outgoer on offering during any Career Exploration Days you’d had to sit through. That was a change.

While you frown, you do wind up thinking about it amidst all the chatter. From what you recalled there was hardly any real exertion on the part of the gifts when it came to showing off what they did; some of the chefs made small meals, or maybe one of the craftsmen showed off something they had pre-made. You're not quite sure what exactly you could show off, maybe just tell if you tails , but it shouldn't be that big of an issue. And heck, if a kid actually decided for some reason they thought you were someone worth following? Well. You weren't the best with children, but you could deal well enough. It wouldn't be too big of a strain on you; maybe you'd take them to some of the Outgoer shops and get a few harmless trinkets for them or something.

Although that does remind you. As you glance over to the girl again, you lean closer to the receptionist. “By the way, can you tell me who that is? She looks so familiar…” Seriously, it’s gonna mess with you until you remember…

Unfortunately, she just shrugs. “I just know she’s an Outgoer- said she was here to ‘pass on some knowledge and kindness’. She seems really nice!”

She looks bored, to you. But she doesn't seem actively hostile at the very least, so...plus there, you suppose.

“Lemme just get your name here then…” she holds out a pad and paper, and you quickly sign your name at the bottom. “There! Now, first call will be in 10 minutes. So you can just relax until then!”

Well, might as well just try to see just who it is that keeps knocking on the door of your memory. It’s going to bug you until you were called, and to be frank you don't really have much choice in the matter of what to show the kids anyway. At the very least, what to show that isn't potentially lethal. It was basically fireworks or maybe a light show or nothing. And in that respect, you find yourself wondering just what the other girl has to bring to the table.

As you approach her, leaning against the wall, you come to realize that the girls hair is two tone somewhat- it starts a much deeper red at the end before it fades into a much softer orange going up towards the roots. She seems to be dressed rather plainly, in jeans and a soft pink tank top- with a very elaborate heart-shaped symbol on it. It's lined with silver and inlaid with what looks to be some sort of orange gem.

She looks up at you as you approach, and quickly raises her hand in greetings as though she wasn't expecting you and is shocked you showed up. “O-oh, hi!” however, she's quick to recover. “Pleasure to meet you my name is Alice also known as Citrine Flash how do you do?” Her words, blistering out of her mouth, almost come off as though she's trying to find the words faster than her mouth can actually move- but only almost. Otherwise, she actually seems kinda stif- wait.

Waaaaaaait.

Wait a minute. You’ve heard THAT name before. Heard it several times, in fact, if only in passing conversation and during moments where civilians like to gush about Outgoers like their all fancy celebrities.

...Is this a fucking ‘A+’ rank standing in front of you? Why would one of them be down here slumming it? You didn’t think they really did that. They usually kept to themselves and only came out to blow smoke up their own asses in public or otherwise bathe in the adulation of the fans. Which still wasn’t often.

“Hello are you okay Is something wrong?” The verbal stream snaps you back to reality, and you realize you should probably give her an answer.

Outgoers are very valuable to the Intersection; they are the ones that bring in the raw materials need to to expand the city. And outgoer work doesn't have to be dangerous; Miranda is built for it, so those are the sorts of jobs she sees.

>It's not like it's a good job
But it is a good job. we are one of the few professions that bring motes to the Intersection and we got freedom of doing whatever we like as long as we pay our dues. Very few jobs have that level of flexibility.

>>2270186
Thanks for reminding me to say this before I go.

>>
>>2270201
Oh god we're so boned. Miranda is in this almost entirely for the money, but it's not like we can tell kids that. And her powers are innate, so they're not a selling point either. And anything we do come up with won't be unique, as there's another, better, outgoer here.

Uhh, something about the freedom to take whatever sorts of jobs you want, long as you pay your dues? Steal a page from Mono's book about constantly seeing new people, places, cultures, art, technology, magic, etc and destroying them?

Lori is the socialite, we might need to panic call/text her for ideas.

Not that kind of good. Enforcer jobs are almost all objectively evil or at least morally bankrupt otherwise Izumi would be making good bank too. If you only care about your money and making the intersection great then there is no issue I guess. We came from here after all. Hometown girl makes good & comes back is a great story.

We can also tell them about how we had a fight with the other A+ listers (common knowledge) and mention that one of them is even working with us now.

Alice might be too powerful to relate to the kids. They're even orphans for crying out loud.

Being an Outgoer isn't easy. It takes hard people living hard lives to do what we do. Better to educate them and be a bit of a downer than to have them aspire to something utterly unreachable.
>>
If our objective is to make a sell for Outgoer Enforcer as a career choice we can talk about our more fun jobs. Our first mission in this quest where we helped an MG team to defeat the final boss and save their city, second where we were a Big Damn Hero. That time Miranda was a pro wrestler, and whatever else we can come up with.

We don't know the average age groups in the orphanage, if the show and tell will be with everyone present at once or going between classes of different ages, that's kind of important to know so we can decide if we need to treat this with kid gloves or not.
Best to plan for both, a kid friendly presentation and one unflattering reality check.

Showing off our magic and abilities may be interesting, can people actually learn magic in the Intersection? Like if you don't have innate magic capacity, come from a world without magic etc is it possible to actually become a wizard? I think that's something to take into account if we represent something you have to be born into. If most of the kids here will never get the opportunity we can sell it like the rock star gig they think it is without influencing them into getting themselves killed. If anyone can become one maybe the better approach is to be a regular cynic.

I suppose there's no reason we have to figure this out by ourselves, we can just talk to Alice. Miranda isn't a dense shounen protag who embarrass herself by not asking questions or listen to advice. Right?

While generally you aren't one to lose nerve over something so simple as a social event, you still can't help but be a little bit more nervous than normal. ‘A+’ ranks like hers actually carried weight, even if they rarely used it. “Uh, yeah, so... hi. I’m Miranda. Styles. Miranda Styles." C'mon, you can at least look her in the eyes! "I- uh, yeah. I'm an, uh, I'm an Outgoer too, I guess...I'm an Enforcer-class, y'know...”

Fantastic. Top marks.

“Hi Miranda it’s really nice to meet you like I said and yeah I'm kinda everything I guess ahahaha!” Again, it seems like it's all one big word barely chopped up into its smaller, more understandable pieces. “So are you here to give some kindness and knowledge to the next generation too huh that’s great but you seem nervous you don’t have to be they’re just little kids!” you get a few looks as as she finishes up, but nothing major. The power of public perception was a strong one, especially in your industry. If you made a wrong move here, it was entirely possible that she would cause SES no end of problems, however she might have liked to do it.

But first, you need to correct her a little. “Oh, I'm not super worried about them, I was just kind of surprised it to you were here of all places. Have to admit I'm surprised to find someone of your rank hanging around.”

“Oh yeah I mean technically I'm not supposed to be here but it was no biggie I just asked Chartreuse for a favor and she let me go!” Somehow, she actually managed to transition into a equally fast paced whisper halfway through the sentence. “I just feel like I should give some of the other kids a little help before I leave you know pay it forward wait I wasn’t supposed to say that sorry my mouth moves faster than myheadforgetitplease so what group are you part of I bet it’s interesting!” You...the expressions are like a flipbook, you just...

Don’t mention her retiring.
Also this is the Intersection, these kids need to learn, if they don’t already know, that money is life here. Not just in terms of buying essentials, but that they will be executed by the Dealmakers if they miss one too many payments.
Their time at the House is probably being billed to them as an investment and they’ll have to pay back the “loans” they’ve accrued.

Eh, there's never been any indication that the Dealmakers are cruel. Actually, they seems rather forgiving, considering. Miranda has mentioned the dealmakers tax everyone differently depending on their circumstances, and give considerable leeway on missed payments. Also, way back in the early threads she mentioned that in all her time here, she's only ever seen one person 'ejected'

You're not even going to risk it. Jus just... Answer the question. "Uh...Silver Eye Solutions, I guess. Haven't heard of it?"

“Nope can’t say that I have but then again I work a lot so I don't really get out much!” Ah. Not surprised.

“Oh. Well, we’re small, but growing! We make do.” At least talking about work is getting you a little bit more comfortable. “Can’t say it hasn't been interesting for me, recently.”

“Oh that’s pleasant to know I like the name it sounds catchy I work for Flashpoint myself and it’s really nice but anyway i'm really glad I get to do this since I've always liked kids y’know!” This whole talking really fast thing is actually starting to get a bit annoying…

But you’ll have to bear it for now. “Soooo... What are you going to do? For the presentation, I mean.”

“Oh well I was just going to go over some of the day-to-day life and maybe tell them about a few fun jobs that I went on and how it can be great exercise and if we get an opportunity maybe a little demonstration since i know they have magic permissible rooms in here somewhere!” You feel tempted to say something about that arrangement, but before you can, you suddenly hear a louder voice ring out.

“Alright, everyone!” You turn your head to see the reception is standing in front of a set of double doors. “Now, for those of you who signed up last minute, here's a brief explanation. Everyone will be arranged in groups, and you'll all be taken to the auditorium of the building to explain what you do. You will have fifteen minutes to give a short speech about yourself and what you do, and ideally how you think it would be a good career for them. They'll also be able to ask questions during this period, and you're free to answer- but there are NO live demonstrations allowed at this point!” She looks over in the field of people carefully to make sure they all understand the severity of that statement, getting a lot of nods in return.
>>
>>2271907
Once she's satisfied, she continues. “At the end of the presentations, the kids will all individually choose whether or not they want to participate in active demonstrations, upon which you will all be separated by group to your designated demonstration floors. These floors have multiple rooms for different purposes, so don't worry about interrupting anyone else's demonstration, or otherwise having to butt in on someone else's demonstration time. You'll have thirty minutes to demonstrate your career, and that’s it. There will be aids standing by for any child interested in shadowing you for a day to report to, and if you need anything, please don't hesitate to tell them so. Also, we ask that if possible, you please stay until the entire event is finished so that we can get a proper tally and inform you of the number of children that are interested. If it is not possible for you to stay, then we ask that you at least leave your contact information so that we can immediately get in contact with you. If you will not be available tomorrow for shadowing, we ask that you please leave now.”

Nobody moves. Guess everyone's cleared their calendars. Ha. You suppose that's one of the things you could say is a positive. You really do work on your own schedule.

“Any further questions?”

>Anything?

Nobody says anything, and the receptionist smiles. “Okay, then! Now, first, groups…”

One by one names are called out, and to your slight relief you and Alice AREN’T in the same group. Instead you're paired with someone who looks to be some sort of mason, a jeweler, a librarian, and someone who you have no clue who is, but it seems like they're in some sort of business. Judging by the suit, at least.

“Alright, please make sure to remember the group you're in, if not, then please ask me before we leave to the demonstration floors! Now, if you will all follow me, please!” she turns, and opens the double doors with flourish, and you're all walked through the solemn halls.

Although... You say solemn, but you notice that there are signs of life here and there- fair few, actually. The occasional picture of a class mid-lesson, some small artworks. Little things, none of them signed or given any specific identity, but they all seemed as though they were genuine; things that were made by the children who were influenced by this place for good or ill.

Before you can mull on that thought any further, you find yourself stopped in front of a very large pair of- again- double doors. this time, there's a large sign on the top that says ‘Auditorium’, leaving you no guesses as to where this leads. She opens the door this time without any fanfare, and you can take a look at the incredibly expensive room within- it's essentially a concert hall with how many seats there are, second third and fourth floors even.

And the children. All ages, all sizes, all shapes and all colors. Human, alien, anything and everything in between are staring and chattering and doing all the things kids do when they know full well they're going to be forced to sit down for an extended period of time for something that they'll probably find completely boring for most of it.

Which means that for the lot of you your hands almost automatically go to your ears. The receptionist, to her credit, seems entirely unfazed by the raucous crowd, simply leading you all behind the stage curtains, where the crowd noise is mitigated only minutely. She gives you an open palm, the universal signal for ‘wait here’, and steps out behind the curtain to face the mass of kids.

“Hellooooo! Can everyone hear me?” Her voice rings out loud and clear as a bell, and to your surprise the masses calm down almost instantly with many of them responding.

“Yes, Mrs. June!” So that was her name.

“Great! I want to thank all of you kids for being here on Career Exploration Day, and I just want to remind all of you to PLEASE, treat all of our guests with all the respect and dignity they deserve. Remember what we taught you- they're working hard to make sure The Intersection is a great place for everyone, just like everyone has to. These individuals all took the time out of their days to show you what their lives are like, in the hopes that maybe you'll find something that you really want to do for a career- something you can have fun with, while they can have someone to share their knowledge with. Which is, and always will be, noble and appreciated. So I think that, already, they all deserve a round of applause for the work they do for you, me, and The Intersection as a whole.” Polite claps go up as she finishes that sentence.

“Now, again, please hold any questions you have for any of the presenters until after they give their presentation, or unless they specifically asked for them, okay? Until then, we ask that you give them time to say what they want to say, no matter what happens, alright?”

“Yes Mrs. June!” Hoo, that’s in sync.

“Alright! Well, first, we have Mr. Loy, he’s a chef, and I think a lot of you will be interested in just the kind of chef he is!” Applause goes up as she leaves the stage, and a very bulky man steps forward to take her place. He honestly looks more like a barbarian warrior than anything else- he's dressed in the furs and leather boots, his mustache is thick and full, and he even has a hat that's more suited for battle than anything chef-like.

“GREETINGS!” The man booms out, almost without need of a microphone. “I am Norvald Loy! I am THE BATTLECHEF OF LASGRÜD!”

...Oh. Yeah, that’d explain it.

cont again.
>>
>>2272003
And so it goes. Several of them similar to Loy, where they do their best to make their professions sound bombastic and amazing and a really cool dream. Some of them, the carpenters, the jewelers, the desk workers, they all emphasize the importance and the practicality of their work. They make themselves seem like important, irreplaceable cogs in a very large machine. Which you know is absolutely bogus, but whatever keeps things working.

Most of the questions the kids have all are usually very simple. Softballs and the basic stuff that you would expect someone who has no clue of what someone else does to ask. ‘How long have you been doing this kind of thing?’ ‘Is it boring to you?’ ‘Have you ever gotten in trouble at work?’ Those sorts of things.

And then part way through Mrs. June gets back up on the stage. “Alright, now kids, we have someone particularly special coming up. She has a very special job, and so I have to ask you to keep your questions brief for her in particular, as a lot of what she does isn't always public. Please clap for Ms. Alic-”

“Hiiiiii everyone!” Without warning, Alice, or Citrine Flash, quickly bounds out to the crowd, throwing the curtain aside and a slightly exaggerated motion and quickly skittering up to the microphone, nearly bumping into Mrs. June, much to her surprise. “Really really sorry, but I just got so excited! Did I move too fast? i'm trying to slow down, I promise!” Huh. She's actually pausing in her speech now. You’d feel offended, if you didn't notice that she seemed to be practically vibrating in place. It might be taking her a lot to hold it all in. “Sooooo my name is alice, BUT! A lot of people know me as Citrine Flash! I’m an Outgoer!”

A lot of ooohs and ahhhs immediately go up at such a revelation, and even a lot of amazed shouts and chants of her name. “Oh, oh my goodness stop, really! It’s too much! But thank you!”

Hmph.

After a few moments, the crowd quiet down, and she continues speaking. “Now, I know outgoers are treated really special, and I know that some people don't really know everything we do. So! I came out here to tell you about a few things that make Outgoing life really really fun and cool and stuff!”

Ooooooooh boy.

cont. yet again
>>
>>2272017
“So, first thing’s first, I work for Flashpoint, which, if you haven't heard, is an Outgoer company that specializes in acquisitions and retrieval! What that means, is that we get to go to a lot of really cool places, and we get to find really cool things and bring them back for The Intersection to use, or people hire us to find really cool things for them, or we use things for trade! We’re kinda like treasure hunters or adventuring traders and stuff!”

More oohhs and ahhs. Really.

“So, I have to say I think it's a really cool job! Before I came here I was kind of doing the same thing, only with a lot more beating down people like in action movies!” There's a brief pause for laughter before she continues. “But because of what I can do, I eventually decided that I was a lot more suited for runnin’ places, and I have to say it's worked out for me pretty well! Sometimes, you get to find some really cool things like this really really big engraving of a sun one time. It was like, as big as this whole floor here! And I had to make my way through this really scary-looking temple and run away from a lot of really weird guys to get it and take it out! There were pits and snakes and traps, and all that kind of stuff! You need to be really brave for some of these assignments, no joke! But, if you got that, and a clever head on your shoulders, you can make it out of pretty much anything! Just keep facing forward, and keep at it! If you do, you'll get to see a lot of really cool places, like one place I went where the grass was actually pink and everything taste like candy!”

THAT gets a lot of cheers from the crowd. Of course. “Buuuut, sometimes you haveta go to a place that’s like, super scary! Like one place was allll full of skeletons and zombies and creepy monsters and you gotta be fast to get past them!” She makes a groaning sound like a stereotypical zombie, and you can hear a few more laughs.

After a while though, things quiet down. “It’s really cool going out with teams, too! It’s a lot easier when you got people you know watching your back, especially when they're good friends. That’s what I think is what I value the most. The people you come to know in this job. The friends you make as an Outgoer are ones that you're going to have forever, no two ways about it. They’ll help you through anything- good, bad, or horrible. They become family, in a way. And I think everyone here can appreciate that.” Pure silence, but you get the vibe that it's respectful, not dismissive.

“So, yeah!” You hadn't even noticed that the pep had kind of disappeared from her voice for a second there. “I think that becoming an Outgoer would be a great choice of career for a lot of you- especially if you want to get to see really cool things, and make friends that you will always value! It’s kinda the best thing EVER! Thank you!”

A rousing cheer goes up, and you're not sure what to think of it yourself.

cont. one more.

Questions are asked, many of them about her and her jobs and ‘the coolest thing she thinks she’s ever done’ and whatnot,’ but all too quickly her time is over. As she steps back behind the curtain, a number of the presenters proceed to give her a standing ovation. You as well, if only out of politeness.

As the next presenter steps up, though, you finally decide it's high time to figure out just what you’re going to say. She made it sound so...flowery, but you’re both in the same career. So how to follow something like THAT up?

Moar writing is never a bad thing.

We need to remember our audience is a bunch of kids. Brutality of the job is right out. We're here to show off our job as a prospective future career, not warn them away.

Alice got the close-knit thing already, along with 'see new places and things'. We could squeak in something about the people and cultures you see maybe.

>You’ll be more focused on the logistics- if she was a superhero, you’re a tactician.
>You’ll be more focused on the financials- if she was a superhero, you’re a handywoman.
Somewhere between these is our best bet, I think. Most people don't have magic powers, and wouldn't be doing the sorts of jobs we would. These cover the more practical aspects of the job, while still hopefully being interesting.

Handler said that Miranda lived here for a year, right? She is eternally sweet 17, so I'm presuming that there are teenagers and young adults present in the crowd. If that is wrong, yes it's too much, otherwise I think it is fine. However it is a good idea to preface it all by noting that our kind of work as an enforcer is only one of many specializations.

Courier is a branch of Outgoer, I believe, it just has significantly lower requirements. Kinda like an Outgoer Light. Assuming they have the ability to back it up, there's nothing wrong with being an Outgoer to see the sights though; That's Mono's current position.

"Hi, my name is Miranda Styles, I am an outgoer working for Silver Eye Solutions.

As Alice already told you, our jobs are very exciting and varied and while Flashpoint specialize in acquisition and retrieval, I am an Enforcer and specialize in combat operations. You ever watched an action movie? That's me. I have been the hero who saved the king, the hero who saved the country and the hero who saved the world. Many, many times.

Some examples of my recent jobs are joining a teenage magical girl team where I helped them reach their final boss by fighting against a demon dog that was larger than this entire building! They defeated their nemesis and saved the city. For one job I was hired to train another group of magical girls, and I had to pose as a comic book villain to present them with an obstacle and be a credible but surmountable threat.
I helped to stop a war between two nations by recruiting local heroes to an army and uncovered a plot by the evil clergy of a state religion.
Together with my colleagues we went to a world of super heroes and had to stop a monster of a villain who was able to absorb the super power of others- he had gathered so many that he was almost invulnerable and the local talents were simply far outclassed and unable to deal with him on their own."

It's hard to not offend someone. But then again if we present ourselfs as a division leader, althought from a smaller company. It might indicate that we have something above, it's like this just vecause a guy is REALLY good at shooting or killing if he doesn't have a tactical mind he won't be a good squad leader.

And she doesn't mention she is a division leader so...she can't exactly get offended with it. But it might spark a will to spar with Randa.
>>
>>2272041
Right, okay. If you're going to differentiate yourself from alice in a way that is meaningful and has any kind of residents with the kids that won't immediately scared them off, you might have to take a touch that’s perhaps less excited, and more... sophisticatedly cool. That might work. You got angles you can work from. The financials, the logistics. Maybe even the relationships. You know already you're not going to be quite as...peppy, to say the least.

It's several more presenters before at last it seems like you're up next; the most recent presenter being a two-headed ogre that seemed to specialize in construction work. Mrs. June doesn't take the stage again for an announcement for you; she simply ushers you forward, and you’re quick enough to take the hint.

This number of kids just staring at you...egh. It's a strange feeling, always. Especially when you're not on a job. Kind of feels like you're staring down a mob or something. Or maybe just a massive group of puppies. Sure they look cute in a moment, but you do one wrong thing and suddenly they swam all over you and try to slobber you to death…

...Okay, no, time to actually speak. You take a deep breath, and focus.

"Hi. My name is Miranda Styles. And I am an Outgoer working for Silver Eye Solutions.”

There's a mass number of interested murmurs already going around at that first line, but you continue on regardless, keeping your voice steady.

“Now, as Mrs. Alice already told you, our jobs are often very exciting- and very varied. However, what she didn't really touch on to my sincere appreciation, is that there's a number of specializations for Outgoers, not just one. And while Flashpoint specialize in acquisition and retrieval, I am what’s called an Enforcer, and what I do is specialize in heavy combat operations.”

cont. (Here we go again...)
>>
>>2273658
Yet again there's a number of excited emotions coming from the massive crowd, and you have to hold for a bit to let them quiet down, allowing yourself a small smile at their interest. “So, for example. You ever watched an action movie? That's me. Among other things, I’ve been the hero who saved the king...the country…. and the world. Many, many times, in fact. But.” That one word quickly stops the were starting up again.

“That doesn’t mean that all I do is go around causing explosions and punching people. Although that IS a part of it.” An enjoyable part, if you were being honest with yourself. “Being an Outgoer involves much more than physical ability. Alice touched on this a little, but it's also important to know the people who you work with- both on a job and off a job. There’s going to be some interesting people that you meet while on a mission, and you have to know how to behave yourself around them. That's not just getting in their good books and acting friendly, either. Sometimes that means being unnoticeable. Sometimes that means being the only thing anyone has eyes on. Sometimes it means being the most annoying thing in a 5-mile radius, even.”

Oh, wow, you actually got some laughs at that. Even someone shouting; “THERE YOU GO CLYDE!” although you can't see who said it or who was being referred to.

“But it's important to be able to figure out the personalities of the people you work with,” you continue, “so that you can best get their help in whatever your job might be. It's a very rare job that involves you acting entirely alone as an Enforcer, and most of the time you're going to be talking to at least a few people to figure out what to do, if only because of something unexpected that popped up. Again, kind of like an action movie. There's usually something that wasn't told in the briefing or something that you thought wasn't going to happen for certain that ends up happening, and you have to think on your feet in order to escape the situation. So again, Miss Alice was very accurate when it comes to that. However, I feel like something else that should be touched on is the logistics of the job. Even aside from talking to people, it can be a very interesting and rewarding puzzle to figure out how to most efficiently go about your job. Knowing when to engage an enemy, or when to raid a bad guys hideout, or doing detective work in order to figure out the bad guys weaknesses, all that sort of stuff.”

You're actually kind of surprised that she seem to have everyone's attention when you look out- you expected to see a number of sleepy looking faces, but while there are the occasional slacked sitters, most of them do seem to be quite raptly focused on you.

cont. (again.)
>>
>>2273664
It's actually kind of a little unnerving. “There's also a matter of all the admittedly cool gadgets that you generally need to decide what to bring,” you continue. “Much like your favorite agent in whatever spy film you might enjoy, Outgoers get access to a lot of tools to help make their jobs easier on the whole, and more than a couple of times said tools have saved my life. Yes, I have used exploding pens before.” Yes, more laughter. Oddly pleasing. It’s not even a lie. “And depending on what variety of Outgoer you are, or what branch you work in, that’ll affect your experiences. So if you're out there to beat down bad guys and want to fight amazing beings from far away. To prove your strength and experience and skill? Then that would be being an Enforcer, like myself. For those who want to explore more and see sights and get your fill of as many different places as possible? That’s more Miss Alice’s speed- no pun intended. What she does is normally under the position called a Courier. So really it's up to you.

“Outgoer work is vast, and pretty much neverending. There’s always a new job, a new adventure, some rough, and some easy. But it’s a good job. Challenging work. Often out of doors. Can guarantee that as long as you can do something, you won't go hungry. Above all else, I’d say an Outgoer has to maintain standards. Be polite, be efficient, and have a plan for every contract you take. Keep those three rules and you'll be fine.” You’re honestly surprised you're getting into it this much, but you can't find it in yourself to stop now.

“Even if you’re not into punching people, there's different types of Outgoer work out there- some non-violent at all, even. Sometimes you get sent out alone to fight an army. Sometimes you have an army of friends and allies at your back, or even your front and you’re just the tactician; you sit at base, make the plans of attack, and be prepared to support. Sometimes you're just going out to pick up a few trinkets from someone who's really stubborn. But ALL of these jobs are important, and do a great deal and helping contribute to the expansion and improvement of The Intersection as a whole. which is why I hope you'll take a closer look at it later. Thank you.”

As you step back beyond the curtain, the surprisingly large applause at your back, you find yourself facing a number of the presenters, many with gentle smiles on their faces. You give them a respectful nod as you had a little further back to wait.

As you turn back, you lock eyes with Alice, who has a rather soft smile on her face, a far cry from the peppy girl from before- although she still seems to be bouncing in place.

There’s a large portion of applause, actually. Makes you feel warm inside.

“Oooooh! Thank ya, miss! Thank ya kindly! Ms. Tam-tam and I here ‘preciate that!” The bull puppet claps its hands together in the show of appreciation, while the girl smiles widely and waves- although you hear a couple of groans nearby. Nonetheless, judging by the smile on her face and the notes that she's taking, that may have been just what she wanted to hear.

“Alright, then, who else?” You’ve got time for a couple more…

>A lanky boy with sharp hair stretching down to the small of his back, with sharp-looking yellow eyes and ears, and sunglasses on his head. He’s waving something resembling a skateboard.

You catch yourself frowning a little bit, but you have a good idea of what to say in response to that. At least, a response that isn't going to seem that worrisome while still being legit. “Actually, with the right mindset, many of them can be pleasant. I’d say it all depends on your perspective of things and how you decide to approach the mission.” Because goodness knows what Lorelei will consider pleasant and what Izumi, or you, consider pleasant would be VERY different things. “But sometimes, it’s YOU being the creepy monster that has to give the heroes a scare. I, fairly recently for example, had to fake being a villain in order to train a new group of magical girls. It was a delicate balancing act to not seem too intimidating, while at the same time being far more formidable than normal. Sometimes, you’ll get jobs in that vein."

To surprise, she doesn't say anything, but she still looks rather pensive. Still, she nods and sits down.

“Ahem?” A soft cough gets your attention off to the side, and you turn to Mrs. June, who holds up a finger and mouths something.

‘One more.’

“The young lamia,” you decide. “The blue one that’s- yes, you.”

Straightening herself up she tries to look at you with all the dignity that she can muster. Which isn't much for someone that you don't think is beyond their preteens. “Well, uh, I wasss-s-s-s-” suddenly her forked tongue start waggling everywhere, and she quickly clasps her hands over her mouth. There's some chuckling, and a couple of guffaws, but you motion her to continue regardless. “Uhh, the, uh, sss-s-s-s-socializing,” she hiss-lisps out (oof, an uncontrollable hiss AND a lisp?), much to her embarrassment. “It’s not ALWAYS required, issss-s-s it? Can't you jussssth kind of sssneak around?” She quickly shrinks back into her seat as soon as she finishes talking, and you can guess why she asked the question in the first place.

Hmm…

>“You can, but I wouldn't recommend it. Being able to speak to people does a great deal for the job in a number of ways, like being able to make friendly with clients, or possible local help.”

>“Well...I suppose in some cases it's not necessary. In a lot of jobs, you want to keep a low profile, and people tend to not remember people they haven't even spoken to.”

>“If you don't want to be a talkative sort as an Outgoer, then I would recommend not becoming one, really. It honestly tends to come with the job most days. Or, ironically enough, be part of a unit where you’ll have to do in minimum of talking.”

You suppose you can't really blame her for the question. For the longest time you really weren’t one to talk overmuch on the job yourself. Still aren't, really. “Well...I suppose in some cases it's not necessary.” You shrug, but you doubt she sees it. “In a lot of jobs, you want to keep a low profile, and people tend to not remember people they haven't even spoken to.” Despite her reducing her height, you can still tell where she’s sitting, and you can see her somewhat slump in relief before you continue. “That said... I'd say that's one of the benefits of working in a team, as I hit on earlier. Covering each other's strengths. One can be sneaky, one can be talky, and one can be punchy- kinda like how I prefer. Of course it's always a good idea to have a basic understanding of each other's skills, just in case. And that brings to mind something else, really- one for anyone here that might be interested.” You turn to face the rest of the room as a whole.

“Finding a good company is important. You’ve probably heard of the bigger ones; Flashpoint, Dynamics Methods, Interdiction. There’s far more than that out there, like Silver Eye Solutions, or others, and none of them operate in the same way. Finding a good company that provides you with the resources you need to complete a contract is just as important as having a skill or talent. Whether it’s expansive research and development, good physical presence, or very in-depth intelligence. Not offering you the chance to use your talents, well...that’d be the sign of a very poor company indeed.”

There's a couple of murmurs again at that, but you don't really have the time to take it in, as Mrs. June escorts you off the stage.

The last few presenters seem to fly by as you wait, you muscle going over everything you said you had and hoping that it was good actual advice.

Before you know it, Mrs. June is up on stage again, announcing the end of the event, and for anyone who is interested to follow you all up to the various rooms. She calls out the names of all of the presenters one by one, asking them to leave, and to go to a specific floor and room in the floor. You’re on the 10th floor, Room A2.

cont.
>>
>>2274889
There's not much to say as you head up to the designated room. when you arrive, you find a young male standing there- lion-like, with mane of hair and tail, but with a very human face. “Ms. Styles, right? I’m Johan, I’ll be right here if you need anything. Uh, I’m also supposed to inform you that the room is equipped with voice activated holographic environment synthesization, but that's been turned off, so just tell me and I'll manually key it in.” A bit more detail than necessary, but you just nod and head in.

It's actually a rather spacious room, which you suppose you can understand. About a third of it is blocked off via clear glass wall except for a single door to allow access, and beyond it is the familiar metal that allows you to do your magic.

It's not much longer before you hear a number of voices, all of them young.

So of course you start feeling nerves right about now. You and children were never all that great with each other. At least not for a long long time…

When the door open and the kids file in, you're actually somewhat surprised (and relieved, you won’t lie) that there's only a dozen or so that seem to have been interested enough to follow you in. Considering the massive crowd that was at the event, you were expecting more if only by sheer dint of numbers average. Then again, you never participated in Career Exploration Day, and as far as you know it isn't something that you're required to attend to beyond the initial presentation...the Care House had multiple ways of getting you ready and finding you a job, for certain.

Well, this might work out, you suppose. And to your mild surprise you can't help but notice that the lamb puppet girl, the lamia, the tiny demonic kid with the big horns, and the boy with his fairy friend (no, yeah, that’s a fairy alright) are amongst the curious.

Alright...so…

...hm…

...Now what? Maybe any more questions first? Or just start talking about what you’ve done or- wait, no, crap, do you have anything on you right now...gah, maybe you should’ve put more thought into this…

You end up glancing towards the aid, giving him the universal look of ‘what do I do now?’

Johan, sadly, just shrugs and mouths ‘Just do whatever you want.’

Right, okay then. A quick check of your pockets has you realize that you do still have a couple of things on you. Your FarSight for one, which you’ve gotten into the habit of taking everywhere regardless. For another, it seems like your old jacket has a couple of stones in it from that old Wild West world; you can recognize it from the texture.

You kind of wish you had one of your weapons on you, but you hadn't seen a need to bring your bag with you today- it was kind of a last-second decision after all. Still, you do have an option or two. Not to mention if absolutely necessary you could just show off an example of what you do most days- presuming the holodeck they sported was good enough.

On second thought, you do realize that if anyone had any further questions, now might be a good time to ask. “So, I know I answered some questions earlier, but is there anything that someone wants to know in particular, or did anyone have any questions that they didn't get to have answered already?”

“How many people have you killed?” Comes out of nowhere; the little demonic kid was the asker of that one. Unsurprising.

“Aw, Korak!” One of the others says- a purple skinned, thin faced kid with little hair and a strange snub nose. “Why ya gotta go there?”

The kid named Korak scowls. “Cause I bet she has! Like, tons a’ people! She already said that’s pretty much all she does!”

“Aw, I bet she’s done more than that!” the lamb girl counters. “I bet she’s been all spy-like an’ stuff, too...hey!” And then she turns to you. “Can ya show us what one of yer jobs might be like?”

“Yeah!” the devil-boy says. “Like, beating down some super strong dude!” Several of the boys cheer at that.

“I kinda wanted to see if she got any cool stuff…” the lamia girl says. A couple of girls around her nod in agreement.

“I was hoping for stories and stuff…” one of the others in the back says, to the agreement of several others near them.

>Show off some of your tools and goods. Maybe you can call up Lorelei to back you up.

You might be able to do something to please most of them, now that you think of it. “Just a second.” You quickly turn to Johan, asking him to set up an area reminiscient of standard ‘dusty frontier’ settings...

“...So that’s where we decided that the traditional approach wasn't going to go well, and that we'd have to lay a trap a lot more decisive and more apt to what he preferred,” you explain as you stand outside of the best recreation of the museum that you could get made. Apparently the fact that you had a FarSight meant that it could be cross referenced in the holographic database for imagery to allow much more accurate simulations. “What ended up happening was a several pronged approach- Lorelei would lay traps down and she and our newcomer Mono would remain as backup, while Izumi would be outside to take potshots and, if necessary, come arrest on escape. I was on primary engagement duties.”

“So what happened!?” The devil kid responds- he's rather in rapture by the tale you're telling. Although you do seem to have lost a couple of kids’ attention, a solid number of them seem to be either just as interested as he is, or only slightly less. “Didja get him?”

“Yeah, we got him, but only at a price,” you admit. “See, what happened was…”

Before you can continue, however, you hear an electronic buzzing going off in a rhythmic pattern that you can just recognize as the class bell. “Sorry, kids,” Johan quickly interrupts, his voice now carrying across the entire room. “That means that time’s up.” A number of awwwws and complaints go up, not in the least from Korak. “If you’re interested, then talk to me and I'll sign you up for a chance at shadowing Ms. Miranda for a day. But until then, back to your classrooms so you can finish up the rest of the day, okay?” That’s right...you only had 30 minutes. Seemed like longer.

After a good deal of mumbling and grumbling, the kids fall out, and you and Johan are all that’s left. “Don’t worry too much,” he says as he resets the room’s holographic features. “You usually get a few that fall out of love with the idea of a career once they hear more about it. Honestly, that's a good thing. Means you won't have to pick and choose out of too many. Frankly, I think you did alright.”

“Well, as long as I don’t have to play tour guide in an actively dangerous situation,” you admit.

He nods. “Yeah, they only started allowing Outgoer presentations two semesters ago, and even then they were limiting them to courier guests. I guess it went well enough that they decided to let the floodgates open a bit this year.” Ahhh. That might explain a few things. “Anyway, I need to know if you’re staying around or not. If no, I need your contact info so that we can ring you up at the end of the day.”

You shake your head. “No, I’ll be around. Just buzz me whenever you guys have made up your minds.”

He nods in agreement. “Understood; in that case, I’m required to tell you to please not to interrupt any of our students currently in class, but you're free to go about wherever else you please on campus that isn’t explicitly marked off-limits until we call you. If you don't show up within 10 minutes of our notification, we’ll have someone come looking for you.”

Fair enough. “Right. I’ll be sure to be around.” With that, you’re left to your own devices. Maybe you could at the very least see how things have changed- if they've changed at all.

This place was pretty gigantic even before, and it's only gotten bigger over time...really, the Care House is more of a Care College, now, you’d suppose... But you do recall that there were a number of places that, back when you were here, were fairly popular. The school also had variety of schedules, so chances are you'd find someone no matter where you went.

The Atrium Natura was a place for all the foresty and nature-minded folk; it was basically an indoor forest with how large it was, with a wide variety of pseudo natural landmarks and organic structures. It even has several different biomes that kids can relax in, depending on if they’re more used to dryer or damp areas. You mostly went there to punch trees for practice. They were very hardy trees.

Machina Hall was where are all the mechanical and technorganic individuals hung out. It was far more sterile and chrome and high-tech than just about anywhere else in the compound, and as much as you were a tech fan, you found it a bit creepy sometimes, if only because most everyone there could transmit thought to each other or think at impossible speeds- what usually resulted in someone guessing what you were about to say before you said it. Probably not so scary now anymore, but...meh.

Then there was the Caring Library. It wasn’t as big as the one that Delilah worked at, but it was always reasonably populated simply because it had a lot of information about the basics of living in The Intersection, and some common issues that would be encountered. That, and it had a pretty kicking media room with a private section for games and movies. The fact that it was private often led to a great many shenanigans happening, too.

Not that YOU were part of any.

Then again, there was always the Cafeteria. The food may have just been decent, but there were so many people there that eating was only one of the very many things that you did in the cafeteria. Social alliences were formed, sustained, and broken up in days at the cafeteria, and it was often a place for several cliques to hash out differences or declare grudges or something else. Really, you usually just sat in the corner and ate your lunch before leaving.

The Grand Gym, thinking about it, was probably your favorite class. Although you certainly didn't need it, some kids did, and the fact that your magic was normally unavailable meant that you had to rely on your born-in, natural athleticism. Which, if you would be so bold, was still a cut above the norm. You doubt you would be allowed to interfere in any classes, but they shouldn't say no to a bit of looking in, would they…?

And there there was the Showroom. You never really went there much, but that seemed to be more Lorelei’s speed, if she ever went there. It was where all the dramatic sorts hung out and got to do plays and stuff. Nothing like the Auditorium you were just in, a lot smaller and more intimate.

The sudden rush of everything happening over such a time brings to mind a stirring in your gut. Not a premonition or a matter of concern. Something far worse. Hunger.

And that meant that if you wanted anything anytime soon, there was only one real place to go. You hope the cafeteria isn't as much of a neutral area between warzones as it used to be… although the simple fact that you just thought that makes you feel like you're not going to have your wishes answered.

When you get to the cafeteria, the crowds just as sick as you remember them, you realize that your summation was pretty accurate.

The entire place is decked out in the style of a grand banquet hall, with rows on rows of tables laid out like a buffet line, split in two, allowing workers in the middle to dish out various samples of a massive number of foods. One line entirely is just meats, a while another line entirely is just vegetables, another is fruits, and another is grains and rice and noodles, and of course there's the desert line, arguably the biggest and full of cakes and pies and other goods. From all the different corners of every universe, come all of these different types of foods and recipes.

And most of it, somehow, tastes like nothing. Because of course it does.

Far in the northwest corner or a group of tittering and laughing males and females, many notably taller than average, despite the varying races. All with very long and very fine hair, some curly, some smooth, and all of them with extremely fancy clothes on, high collars and flowing robes, most of them complete with ruffles. They speak in muted tones, hushed tones with the air of people that are indignant that they're in the situation they are, and every now and again one of them spares a glance out to the massive crowd simply to regard them with disdain.

In another corner are children that looks like they've been plucked straight from the war-torn bowels of whatever unfortunate hell they've come into- though knowing what you do, they're probably all made of stern stuff. The simple fact that many of them are either laughing with each other, joking with occasional friendly punches, or otherwise looking more comfortable than they would have been tells the tale there. Occasionally you'll see one of them looking sullen and despondent, but it only lasts for a few moments before one of the other raggedy clothed members of the (honestly rather large) table section puts a hand on their shoulder and cheers them up with either a smile, or a funny antidote, or even a gift in some cases.

Then there’s a very loud section, with a number of girls of all sorts of races arguing. Another lamia girl is hotly debating something with a girl that you can see has some sort of strange natural crest on her head, but otherwise looks fairly normal, save for the latex one piece. A larger girl with a checkerboard pattern dress and two stubby antennae quick buts in as the two stop to listen to her, and as soon as she finishes, the two notch road in acknowledgement, and resume their argument as the girl sits back down with a casual smile.

And in the rightmost corner nearest you, it seems there's some sort of a deal going down at one of the tables- where there's the young froggish girl from earlier, standing (sitting, more-like, perched like a frog) behind a young man with a sharp smile and some vertical tattoos sitting right under his eyes. He's got a long leather jacket, and honestly looks like every stock ‘cool kid’ you've ever seen otherwise. He and she are flanked by a red lizard girl with a very long tail, who’s wearing simple sportswear- a tank top and shorts, and they're talking to a group of five kids, mostly humans, about something that you can't make out over the din.

A few heads turn to you, and you hear some mutterings as you head into the main cafeteria to speak with the main aid to make sure that you can get something. Once you get approval, you set yourself up a simple dish of fish, rice, and some greens. It’s honestly mostly to fill you, not for taste.

...wait.

...shit. There’s nowhere actually private.

You’re going to have to end up near one of these groups. You can’t even sit at your old spot alone- it’s been taken over by a group of kids that seem to be using the space to play some sort of board game. Not your stereotypical nerds, but it definitely seems as though they're very into it, with one flame headed kid literally yelling out his approval as he gets a good roll, and a large, chitinous-skinned child cursing his luck to the amusement of everyone else.

Already you can start sensing individuals looking at you as you stand still in indecision. Fuck, this is starting to feel way too familiar.

>Sit near the preppy rich kids. Maybe your presence can get them to chill.
>Sit near the lost kids. They might appreciate someone of your make.

Don't have time to stand and think, so you just have to watch the first place that you can really move towards. And that's the biggest table, with the numerous mismatched youths. Most of them are in some kind of tattered or torn clothing, though they’ve clearly been washed and had some attempts at repair. One of them is a large, dragon looking girl, pot-bellied, gray scaled and with an oddly wide head and big eyes on top of a long neck that causes her to inadvertently look down on most of the rest of the kids present despite her somewhat short, stubby body stuck in a schoolgirl outfit.

The bow on her head is a cute touch, though.

She surprised when she sees you coming, and it's her reaction that sets off a number of the rest of the kids that notice you approaching.

“Yooo, hey!”

“Isn’t that one of the speakers from earlier?”

“Nice threads…”

“Why’s she eatin’ with us?”

A number of similar questions and curious statements go up as you sit down and begin your meal. It’s still as bland as always...actually, no. There might be actually a bit more taste going down.

Huh. Small wonders.

“Hey, uh…” Ahh. You glance to the side to see who's trying to get your attention. It's a heavier-set boy, with elephantine ears and a large bulbous nose. Bright green eyes stare into yours only for a moment as he begins to stumble in his speech, trying and failing to keep eye contact with you. “Uhhh...caaaan, uhhh…I mean...”

Suddenly a long, clawed hand reaches out and pushes in forward a little bit as a hissing voice rings out “Jussst asssk her!”

“CAN I HAVE YOUR AUTOGRAPH?” The boy blurts out, and suddenly you feel a lot more eyes on you.

For a moment, you swear the entire cafeteria goes silent, even if you know that's impossible. “...what?” you can’t help but ask.

“The-uh..there was a thing not long ago, r-right? The, uh, the open thing with, uh, those Outgoers guys. And you were in it, right? Cause I saw you fight? And it was really cool? S-so, uh, I, yu-yeah!”

Oh man. “Wait, was she the one that nearly broke the dome back then? Yo, my bro told me they had to get their bosses in there and everything!”

“Oooooh, yeah, I heard she was WINNING!”

“Against Interdiction? No way.”

“Totally! Was beatin’ ass!”

“Nah it was even- they were just goin’ too hard and about to break the barricade!”

Ohhhhh. Riiiight. That.

(Run will continue late tomorrow! See you then!)

Oh, but any questions about the Care House or its inhabitants, go ahead, actually.

There's kids like that, yeah. One of the things the Care House offers is psychological counseling.

In fact, counseling in general in The Intersection is very popular, common, and a desired profession. Because hoo boy, do a lot of these folks need it. Tends to lead to slightly more...nihilistic viewpoints for a lot of folks, though. Kids can usually bounce back a bit better, but...there's only so much mental healing one can do.

Mrs. June is NOT a hologram, no! She's a mechanically enhanced organic woman. And by that I mean most of her body is robotic, but her brainmeats and a couple other parts aren't.

Am i reading to much into it or does this mean that Randa was so shocked/damaged by her experience before she arived in the intersection, that even the food was numb to her? Would explain that she doesn't remember much of her time at the care house.

-A minimum of 1, no more than 5. It's generally preferred to stay longer the younger you are. It varies, especially depending on what you're going into.
-It's closer to a technical school that nonetheless teaches a bit of everything. For many children, especially native-born kids, there ARE normal 'schools' in The Intersection.
-Adult ReEducation, but it's for special cases. Most adults who end up here have SOMETHING they can do for pay, even if it's just lifting things.
-Pretty Damn Old.
-Not many. The Care House was developed after the Deal Makers realized 'Oh wow, hey, there's a lot of kids we're pulling in/showing up here. Maybe we should set up a place for them to learn the ropes so they'll be more efficient at making us money later!'

>>2280817
She did, but she barely remembers them. Lorelei spent a week or so getting drunk and party girling it up before realizing 'oh damnit that's right I need to work' and spent some time as a delivery girl for some quick cash before jumping back into Magical Girlness. Izumi knew the score from word go and simply explored and waited until she found an Outgoer job that she liked.

These are kids that are used to reading between the lines, and looking for what isn't said more than what was.

Because if there's one thing you get sick of in wars, it's propaganda and doublespeak. Remember, they talk about heroic charges and brave advances more when casualties are heavier.

Pointing out that the fight wasn't really representative of true skills, then leading in that the Interdiction people are working under our company should lead them to conclude on their own that if there WAS anything on the line, the Interdiction people lost and are paying their debt now.

Then refuse to say anything else, because we don't need trouble coming back at us. If we can truthfully tell the Overseers that we said it was a friendly sparring match that shouldn't have anything read into it, then we're good.

You're quick to quiet a lot of them down, and well... you don't mind a little bit of adulation here and there, you suppose. “Sure. Got a pen and paper?”

The young boy is quick to procure something that looks like a tablet- seems like he's a bit of an artist, and as he flips through it, you notice he has a number of sketches of various random things people and places. None of them in particular you recognize, but it seems like he's drawn a number of the students here- and very detailed.

It's then that he stops upon a sketch of...well, you. Shooting downwards in a blur, most of your body seems to be intentionally obscure, but what you can see clearly is your face. It’s an expression of deep intensity and concentration, the sort that you see on people in a fight. He's got streaks of lightning surrounding the image of you, and someone else that you can't recognize due to the blurring, but you can take a guess as to just who it is. “U-uhhh...this one please!”

Wordlessly, you take the pen and quickly sign your name underneath the image with a flourish. As you had them back both, he takes them with reverence, and suddenly he's getting pushed aside by a number of kids clamoring for your attention, and for a second or two you kind of wish that this was like the old days where you didn't get any attention at all.

“Are you hiring?”

“My brother says he could beat you up, but I said nuh-uh, and-”

“Do you fight like, all the time?”

You don't like it much, but chances are the only way you're going to be able to calm these kids just down is to actually answer some of their questions. and so you try to do your best.

“Okay, okay, uh, hold on for a second there I can only answer so many questions at once!” you insist. “Okay, right, in order. One: Maybe a part-time position.”

“YES!”

“Though if you don't have any combat experience good luck getting anything serious. You might be a go-fer best.” You warn.

“Awwww…”

“Right, then, next: if anyone wants to spar with me, they're welcome to. Everyone has to know limitations after all. Your brother should probably know his.” A round of laughter, even though you’re only half joking. “As for fighting all the time? No, but I do MOST of the time. It's a large part of what we do.”

“Noice!”

You thought so, yes. “Speaking of, the skull thing? Yes. Plenty of times.”

“HA! COOL!”

“Thanks. As for the master of disguise question? Anyone can be if they get the right equipment, for example, thermo-optic camouflage, voice modulator, holographic facial reconstruction mesh combination. Stuff like that, or you could just go invisible with proper tools. But that's more the speed of one of my co-workers, if you're interested in something like that.”

“Aw...if I coulda snuck out wit somethin’ like that…” You can guess.

“And the one-person army thing?” you actually heard that one more than a couple of times. If it's something that you don't generally tend to dissuade, but for these kids? “Depends on the tech and magic level of the locals. Usually we're more about a...eh, maybe a one-person regiment or division. If they’re low tech, then yeah, we could probably take on an army of sorts. But the higher tech the world we work on, the less fearsome we tend to be unless they’re an A Rank, and sometimes not even then.”

“Tch. Figures a lot of it was all talk.” The kid in particular, you note, has a lot of scars on his face and shoulders. You suppose you can’t really help that.

You end up staying there for a little bit longer, answering questions between bites of almost bland food. But if nothing else, the kids seem to be interested in the job...

As you finally finish up and move to leave the cafeteria, you find yourself stopped by, to your surprise, two girls that you recall from earlier- the checkerboard dress big girl and the lamia girl. “Heeey!” The big girl says cheerily. “I just wanted to ask you a quick question please!”

Curious. “Go ahead?”

“I heard from a friend that heard from her big sister that heard from a friend of theirs that you were in the Interdiction offices not long after that big fight at the open day. How come?”

You open your mouth to answer... and then quickly close it. For some reason, a strange vibe comes off these girls...something predatory.

How is Sal feeling about Miranda right now, anyway?
With the death of a principal on a contract that he had a personal stake in, and this most recent contract only paying 2/3 of the original negotiated payment (though we only did about 1/3 of the work, to be honest), how's Sal feeling about his "top performer"?

What?

It's two snoops in an orphanage, at an event we attended unannounced. What you're saying makes little sense, they'd check this in with Sal, not do something so fucking roundabout as this instead of just going straight for the individual that they can hold responsible and accountable.
There's a difference between being cautious about gossip and being paranoid. We didn't earn a full payout because the situation drastically deteriorated due to unforeseen events and outside interference that the client chose to renegotiate. That's not a failing on our part.

Either way only an anime protagonist would choose to not inform their boss that gossip and speculation is going strong enough that we were approached directly for information on a sensitive matter.

Might as well. Whatever it was, it seemed like it was important, especially if she was going to call you for help. Then again, it was Lorelei. So maybe not. She didn't seem especially concerned, admittedly. “Alright, sure. I’ll be there.”

“Thanks a ton!” Her chipper voice clicks out as the phone hangs up, and you give a soft sigh as you head to the front desk. Gonna have to give them your number…

After leaving your contact information with Mrs. June, it's fortunately not too long to get back to Lorelei’s place- traffic is relatively light. It’s there you find Lorelei sitting at her table, or more accurately, slumped over it, having two datapads in front of her while she looks like she’s doing an extremely difficult math problem more than anything else. When she looks over at you, it's with the expression of someone who she sees, at least for the minute, as her very savior. “ ‘Randa! Thank goodness you made it.” She’s quick to get up, pads in hand.

“Yeah, it sounded important, so-” you don't have any further time to talk before she jams both of them in your hand.

>We are the lost. We are the damned. We are the Mourning. The ruler of the land, Lord Nodan has acquired his position through falsehoods and deception. He has ravaged the land in his mad bid to solidify his power, and we seek someone to destroy him both in the public eye and personally. Our agents are few, and his magics are powerful. It is said that he had made pacts with forces beyond our reckoning to gain his opportunity. We have been pressed to attempt the same.

>Greetings, my soon to be summoned minion! I am Nathan King, and I am the illustrious owner of King Industries. As you no doubt know, Minibot Battling has taken the globe by storm! However, a man of my influence and power requires only the best to compete. I have heard of some particularly interesting, experimental parts being tested for Minibots. These parts could, theoretically, function as the base for the most powerful MiniBot ever designed! Your job? Retrieve me those parts! You will be provided your own MiniBot assistant as well.
>Riders Added: Minimal Collateral Damage, Zero Fatalities.
>Total Offered Payment: 28

Interesting duo, honestly, but. “...So...what’s the issue? You just don’t know which to go on first?”

She shakes her head. “No, he’s making me choose! And then after it I’ve got ANOTHER two to pick from!” Oh. Why didn't she say that in the first place? “And they both seem good- I mean, the robot thing is gonna be harder if I can’t kill anyone, but the money…”

Yeah, she wasn’t wrong there. Zero Fatality jobs were usually a hassle- but they AUTOMATICALLY merited double pay, so depending on the job, worth it.

“And I know you’re probably gonna be like ‘just pick whatever you feel more confident in’, but you know me, ‘Randa! Kinda!” Again, not wrong.

This part worries me. Smell like another outgoer. Althought Lori might be sneaky enough to pull it off
>>

Sounds like there are other ways to get cash bonuses in this one. Like if we pull a heist from a fancy lab we can sell any extra parts to other competitors.
Also robobuddy.
>>
>>2286286

She has the powerset to accomplish The ultimate Robattler, but i don't think she will be capable of doing it bloodless.
>>

>The Ultimate Robattler. The money is too good to pass up.

Less risky for her and she can always use her talent to possesses her robot and fight as it. Sge could always just sneak around without getting caugth.
>>
>>2286286
>It is said that he had made pacts with forces beyond our reckoning to gain his opportunity
Sounds like there might be a rival Outgoer, but otherwise it sounds more up her alley. And Robo sounds a little... delicate for her.

>Hidden Hands. It’s easier for her, honestly.

>Zero Fatalities.

Holy crap that would be hard with our powerset.
>>
Also this Robattler gives me the felling of that mobile suit gundam were these mini-gundams fight each other. I forget the name.
>>
how hard could a No Fatality run be for someone as experienced as Miranda?

All we gotta do is pick up non-lethal weapons before we go. Or break into a police station and loot their pepper paintball guns, tasers, stunguns, glueguns, beanbag and rubber shotgun shells, and zip ties.

I mean, nothing in the contract says we have to prevent anyone from finding out who did the job or where the parts went, right?
>>
>>2286329
The zero fatalities is more likely because the world works as a pokemon world. Were you make vets in this mini robots battle and once you win you get the prize. Or just destroy the mini mech and take everything you want. She could even possesses the minibot she uses and sneak around.

She's assuming it's a regular world. It doesn't sound like she's being sent to solid snake her way through facilities with armed guards.
Besides it's probably good for her to go a few days without wanton murder.

I wonder what would happen if we applied the sigils in the minibot to amplify it's attack power.

Also we need to dress up elite goon style this time.
>>
>>2286404
That's a good question, what will we want our stats to look like for Lori's job? High plain for sneaking would be my vote.
>>
>>2286410
Maybe take more info about the world using the future sight? We can even play the exotic femme fatale( which fits Lori ) or a secret agent with disguise expertise so nobody knows it's her (just like jesse and james do in pokemon)
>>
>>2286423
Lori doesn't have a Future Sight. They are extremely expensive, which is randa is the only on in the company with one.
Femme fatale would be, what, low intimidation, low humor, moderate otherworldly, moderate-low hothead, and low plainness on best guess. Secret agent would just be high plainness I think.

“Hmmmm…” your eye shift between the both of them, weighing the pros and cons in your head. One might be more dangerous, but the other is more troublesome in general, but the money is good...hmm..

Lorelei doesn't say anything as you waited too mentally, simply rocking back and forth on her heels, looking at, well... nothing and everything. Seems like she can't quite keep her eyes still. Of course the second you open your mouth her focus snaps back to you instantly. “The, uh, the robattle one, I think would suit you pretty well,” you decide. “I mean, barring the killing thing. Looks like something you’d be able to pull off pretty smoothly, so long as you didn’t mess around too much.”

“Got it!” And without warning she SNATCHES the datapad back, looking over it again. Big city, bright lights, tall towers...gotta admit, I’m gonna like this place more than getting into the dirt and having to smell non-cooked animals again!”

“I thought you liked that,” you note.

“Well, yeah, but, like. It’s a renaissance faire kind of like. I don't want to do it ALL the time!” She quips. “That’d be boring.” Hmph. “So, what’re you gonna do while I’m out being all awesome with a robobuddy an’ stuff?”

“Probably just showing a kid around and training, honestly.” You admit. “There’s some new techniques I want to nail down.”

“Pft. Good luck with that. Handling a kid, I mean, not the training thing, you’re fine there. Kids are a giant pain, girl; trust me.” She doesn’t look at you as she thumbing through the datapad’s information.

Huh. Didn't think she had any of that sort of experience. Although thinking about it, you suppose you kind of could see her doing some sort of tour guide stuff maybe or something. “Got any tips for me, then?”

“Don’t expect them to listen. Expect them to try and break the rules and be prepared for it,” she says unceremoniously. She has a surprisingly sincere tone to her voice; there's none of her usual playfulness or impishness, and a stray spark of curiosity flares before you quash it back down. “The best way to get them to stop is to give them some sort of incentive to following the rules. Doesn't have to necessarily be anything material, either. At least not right off the bat.”

Not bad advice… “That’s probably going to end up pretty useful, actually, thanks. Don't know what I could offer them, but I'm pretty sure I'll think of something.” You're pretty sure there's SOMETHING you could give them, although you might have to check around a bit…

“Just don’t treat them like little delinquents, they'll love that,” she continues. “I know how you roll, Miranda, so you're going to have to act like you're on a job for this one. Don't be all serious and dour like you usually are, because they're going to pick up on the idea that you don't want them around. Act like you're glad to have them and they’ll be glad to be around you.” Great, now you’re just getting uncomfortable again… “Aaanyway, if I’m going to be doing this, I might as well start getting prepped. Sal’s likely going to come around in the next couple of days before too long and see if I’m set.”

You nod- you’ve got a few things you need to probably do, yourself. “I’ll see you later tonight, then, if you’re available. About two-three hours. I wanted to make some purchases for the team, and I wanted everyone’s input.”

“Oh, sweet! Your place or HQ?” And then her grin is back. “Hope you got snacks!”

You don’t.

-----------------

“Uhhh, right, so, what’s goin’ on?” As you enter your headquaters, you’re only semi surprised to find Claudi and Nero both waiting for you- alongside everyone else; Izumi, Lorelei, Owlia, Cylica, and Mono. “Heard from the chatterbox that this was an all-hands meeting. Figured we’d show up to be safe about it since we’re not of the hook yet.” Nero doesn’t put any extra inflection in the last sentence, but you can sense that there’s still just a touch of resentment there… “Or was I wrong? I don’t mind bouncin’- company privacy an’ all that.”

>No, it’s fine. You can stay. It won’t be a big secret for long.
>Just give me the motes you got on the jobs we sent you.

“No, it’s fine.” No real reason to make them go. “You can stay. It won’t be a big secret for long.”

He just shrugs. “If you say so.”

“So, what's the boss got in mind for us?” Mono asks as you all head into the break room- it's not exactly a meeting room, but you haven’t bought that; this is the best that you've got for now. At the very least people should be comfortable. “Owlia mentioned financial issues, but…”

“Sounds like we’re getting some new stuff, I think?” Izumi hazards.

“That’s right,” you confirm as you sit down. “I was looking through our finances, and-”

“We’re getting a laboratory,” Cylica smugly replies. “So we’ll finally be able to provide you lot with accoutrements that are actually worthwhile.”

“And I get to do experiments whenever I want instead of only a couple of hours a day!” Owlia squees. “I’ve already got my sleeping bag ready!”

“No you don’t,” Cylica rejects smoothly.

Pout. “Awwwww…”

Izumi interrupts. “Actually, does this mean we have enough to get the training ring? I’ve been meaning to help Mono with her swordplay more…” Mono nods, agreeing.

“Boooooring!” Lorelei interrupts. Claudi just grunts.

“Says the girl who’s been using the Meditation Room almost religiously?” Izumi asks with something close to a shit-eating grin.

Lorelei promptly falls quiet, blushing even as Izumi pats her on the back good naturedly.

The laboratory will serve gor all of our needs. We intend to start producing a kit so we can always carry works more easily and safely. The lab won't just be Owlya playground. It will be a mean so we can benefit everyone so you can avoid any accidents. Such as when you got shot Izumi. Or when Lorelei needs more fire power when infiltrating. If we become more efficient and have simething else to support us during out outings we can grab better jobs and everyone will come back safe.

There are presumably training places all over this district.
But don't mention the sigils to our visitors, I don't think they now about them yet.

>>2295714
"Yes, we're getting the Laboratory first. It's not just for pure research, but to have Owlia and Cylica produce support crystals for everyone to carry onto missions."
>>
>>2295714
The lab is going to pay for itself within the week. We have two expert inventor and researchers, the stuff they'll be able to provide us with are going to let us be more efficient and safe, letting us take better jobs at less risk. There are plenty of public gyms for training martial and magical arts available, proper labs aren't.

I dunno why you guys let them sit in on this. Now we can't tell the girls about the sigils and papers we brought back, we can only try to convince then to pitch in to buy something they don't necessary want with their personal money with vague promises and no concrete plans.
>>
