You're a Rock Hard Gladiator, someone who beats up other Gladiators for arbitrary scoring, along with fame and the accomplishment of whatever personal quest you have.

Gladiators come in a large variety of colors, powers, weapons and stories. However, many of them can be counted within a set of broad templates. Which one are you?

>Dude With Sword — A classic staple and the most popular template, you're a swordsman like many. What sets you apart from the others is how you wield your blade and what tricks you can pull against the opponent.

>Brawler — You hit people with your limbs. Maybe you're a martial artist, or a half-monster who tears everyone with claws.

>The Enhanced — You're not an ordinary person and your powers reflect that. Maybe you're a robot, an alien, or a shapeshifting mass of liquid.

>The Wielder — A catch-all template for weapon-wielders that aren't swordsmen. Maybe you're packing a spear, or a backpack full of guns.

>Manipulator — You control something, maybe it's an element, or a swarm of insects, or the powers of gravity. Swish goes your arms and whatever it is you're handling will move accordingly.

>Mundane Made Awesome — You're an ordinary person compared to the other gladiators, but there's something about you that makes you extraordinary.

Alright, so you're name's Stewart and you're a Manipulator who's out for blood. So far so good.

>Elementalist — You manipulate a typical element, like fire, water, earth and light.
>Magic — Yer a wizard, Stewart! You have a small collection of spells you can use and can learn more between battles.
>Physics — When manipulating an element isn't cool enough, you can manipulate scientific forces like gravity, magnetism, space, time, speed and tempeature. All to an extent, of course.
>Psionics — You have psychic powers. Usually in the form of telekinesis but you can specialize to perform other tricks.
>Constructs — You make and control transient objects, the only limits are your imagination and arbitrary restrictions involving size and complexity.

Thanks for the compliment.

Alright, you're a water-based elementalist. Now you can turn those zen sayings into snappy attacks, or something. For the next step, how about bringing something for the ride? And what's that about your body?

Choose one from each group:

ABILITY
>Aesthetics — Nothing like a scarf or some other accessory, along with a neat hairstyle or some other visual customization. This might not have much use in combat but there are situations outside of it where it might come in handy.
>Elemental Infusion — You're in your element, literally. You can turn parts of your body or your whole self into water. However, you can be forced back into your human self with the right attacks.
>Intuition — The right smidgen of information somehow enters your mind at the right time, giving you hints when the situation calls for it.
>Limit Break — The obligatory rage mode/super mode most mainstream gladiators seem to have. You move faster and hit harder, but there are drawbacks that make it best used as last-ditch moves.
>Pain Resistance — You feel less pain than normal. Although there's a limit to how much pain is dulled, at least you won't be bothered by lesser hits like needle pricks and eye jabs.

ITEM
>Armor — You're wearing armor, maybe it's a bulletproof vest or the full plate gear worn by knights. Whatever it is, it'll keep you in the fight longer.
>Mobility — Skates, rocket boots, a grappling hook; whatever it is, it'll help you move around better.
>Utility Bag — You have a stachel or a backpack filled with various minor items. The effects aren't that notable but the right one at the right time can be useful.
>Weapon — You have a weapon to attack with, nothing too crazy but it's useful if you're running dry. Specify what type of weapon you're wielding (e.g. pistol, spear, rifle, axe, bow, knife, etc.)
>>
>>2401902
>Armor
The big problem with padded armor is that getting wet makes you a useless turtle. This isnt a problem for you.
>>

You now have a rather blocky suit of armor, with ease of articulation from open joints. It's also enhanced with Elemental Infusion, allowing it to be brought along with you in water form as well as serve as an emergency supply of water. By the way, infusion also allows you to metabolize water much faster as well, although drinking water for healing seems inconclusive.

Now we're almost done, it's time for selecting perks! There are two sets of them, a generic set (available regardless of how the character turns out); and a set tailored to you. Choose two perks from each set.

Generic
>Companion — You have a friend who can back you up in times of need, though he/she isn't always around. If you ever have fight him/her, the stakes are dramatically reduced to avoid ruining your friendship.
>Dossier — Before the start of the match, you are given additional information about your upcoming opponent—more than what casual observation would provide. This perk only works if you are the challenger.
>Flunkies — You have lesser minions to command in a fight. In this situation, you would gain the ability to create "Water Shells", hollow facsimiles of your form made out of a thin layer of water.
>Girl Power — Ever heard of a girl named Stewart? Apparently being female adds another layer of special to you, with benefits both in-combat and outside as well. However this also has its own share of drawbacks.
>Legacy — You have the tutelage of a more experienced Gladiator. However you are expected to keep up with your mentor's standards, and you may find yourself battling him/her sometime in the future.

Custom
>Extended Range — You can control water up to 30m away (compared to 10m) before your "grip" weakens. The maximum range you can draw from is 80m, with difficulty.
>Mixture — Any liquid substances are eligible for your control as long as they are properly mixed with water, this includes laundry detergent (if properly mixed), coarse mud and delicious soup.
>Precision Control — With finer control, you can move it more accurately and can even form basic melee weapons. You can also control objects as long as they are saturated with water, like sponges and wet clothes.
>Volume Increase — You can control 20 gallons of water (compared to 5) before having to exert yourself to manipulate more.
>Three Phases — Your control over water extends to its other phases and can switch between them freely. This also includes your liquid form as well, allowing you to turn into a small iceberg or a thick cloud.

One more update before I go to sleep.

>Mixture or Precision Control
Hmm, this is tricky so I'll pre-type the next update. I'll roll the dice if someone else doesn't show up within 30 minutes.
>>
>>2402022
With mixture can we fuck with blood?
>>
>>2402035
This is actually important
>>
>>2402035
As long as most of the mixture is composed of water, rough estimate of 65% at least. I remember anticipating the idea of controlling someone's fluids and coming up with limitations, but I forgot to mention it until now. Thanks for reminding me.

Stewart can't control bodily fluids from inside people, largely because it's too contained. A closed jar prevents him from manipulating it but an open one allows his power to "grip" the liquid from the surface and yank the rest of the water away. Same goes for people. Stewart can't manipulate bodily fluids from the inside, but if someone's drooling then he can swipe some saliva once it leaks from the guy's mouth.

A similar limitation is also imposed with Precision Control. The teddy bear that fell into the pool is eligible for manipulation, but not (ironically) an actual water balloon.
>>
>>2402050
I can work with that. If the others are set on mixture then I'll switch.
>>
>>2402050
Good to know

Making melee weapons out of ice is neat but control over blood is way too good to pass up. And three phases is super utilitarian as well.

By my mental interpretation of how this is going, Mixture wins.

In the (hopefully near) future, once you've selected an opponent to challenge you will be given a comprehensive profile detailing the specifics of their abilities. You also gain the ability to create "Water Shells"—hollow clones of yourself made out of a thin layer of water.

Your control over water has broadened to cover solids (ice) and gas (fog, steam), as well as allowing you to forcibly change which state the water is in. You can also manipulate mixtures containing other substances as long as water makes up the majority.

Welp, this is great! Now you're all set for adventure, and just in time, too. You hear footsteps approaching behind you, most likely your first opponent.

How are you going to respond to his approach?

You create two Water Shells as you leap back, turning to face your challenger: some schmuck with a bucket. Hey! You recognize this guy, his name is Benman—the idiot who thought fighting someone in the Top 10 with only a bucket was a smart idea. It's likely he's lost a lot more battles since then.

"I have a good feeling about this!" Benman excitedly declares.

Discounting tables that are already too fully, which table are you going to seat with?

Chuck begins elaborating on the many gladiators that are widely known, starting with the most popular ones.

FLLFFL (read as "Alfa")
The gladiator who fought many battles and won almost all of them. He's an experienced master armed with a jet-propelled sword, the only one of its kind. Virtually everyone knows about him. All the boys want to fight him, while all the men want to be him. He rarely shows himself nowadays, and he swore off from unnecessary killing after slaying Ð. A member (or leader?) of the now-disbanded "Velox" clan.

Yoyo
A teenager who's one of the very few to win against Alfa. He's uses a modified yoyo that can charge up with explosive power. He's also fast and a combo master. Leader of the now-disbanded "Soldier" clan.

Jomm
A member of the now-disbanded "Soldier" clan, he wields a gigantic blade that unleashes strong blasts of compressed air.

Mr. Pix
A somewhat-living computer program who gathers information. He can stretch and morph with a body made entirely out of a malleable substance. Very creative with his fighting moves.

WeiEn
A time-displaced soldier from Imperial China. He wields a pair of modified crossbows and can absorb kinetic force (to an extent).

Quickfeet
Born supernatural, this man can run fast and kick hard. He showed up one day and started making a name for himself after surviving multiple battles in a short span of time.

Kalena Eirwen
A determined swordswoman from another world. She believes in fighting evil wherever she goes, and wields a magic blade that binds her to the truth. Fought less battles than Alfa yet has only lost once.

Ashe Mercay
A freelance detective with an unusual set of superpowers: see people at their nearest (potential) state of death, limited surface manipulation, self-reloading revolvers, and a psychic hotline to someone named Lyle. He's the only one so far to defeat Kalena Eirwen in a fight.

The French
A mysterious and intimidating contract killer from France. Little is known about him aside from being armed with an Uzi and wearing body armor.

"There's a handful more than that, but these are the ones that first come to my head." Chuck informs before taking a lengthy sip of his beverage. You also imitate him before continuing to enjoy your meal.

Chuck laughs briefly before replying to your next question. "Frankly, I never really put much thought in that. If you mean the city then I guess the cleanup crew have plenty of jobs."

You clarify your statement, "I mean if something happens to me, like injury or even death."

"Ooooh, I gotcha." Chuck says in realization. "The healthcare's pretty good and the hospitals can patch you up very quickly."

"But where would I get the money to afford it?"

He shrugs at your question, having no definite answer. "I don't know, I never really think about it that much. I guess being a gladiator has its career perks."

You walk up to Dave, waving at him with a friendly smile. He returns the favor with a wave of his own.

"Hello!" You greet courteously, "My name's Stewart, and I'm here to challenge you. You're Indestructible Dave, right?"

"Yes I am, guess we're gonna fight now, huh?" Dave replies as he manifests his katana in his right hand.

Remember that our main goal is to drown him.
Perhaps we can soak him and form a bubble around his head?
Might want to wait to do that until after he draws the desert eagle and we saturate the ammo.

You collect the water soaking Dave and pool it around his Deagle.

"Huh? What-" he manages to exclaim before you fling his firearm all the way to the other side of the warehouse. It is now teetering on the ledge of the port. Any disturbance could set it falling into the water.

However, Dave still has his katana and he's stepping closer to you.

A second later, he's almost upon you but you drop down and slide away from his reach, falling into the seawater. You immediately conjure a layer of ice above you on the water's surface. Dave falls on it immediately, slipping upon landing and nearly cracking the ice with the impact of his butt. He groans loudly from the pain.

Victory! +3 Rank (currently #97)

You surface from the water to hear a woman commenting on your recent victory. "Good performance against Dave, now come here so you can get patched up."

You lift yourself back to the ledge with your water manipulation and approach this office lady.

"Who are you? And are you here for a fight?"

The office lady shakes her head."No, I'm just a staff member of the RHG system. I'm here to formally welcome you to the system, as formal as a sudden meeting in the docks can be. While you wait for the cleanup crew to arrive, how about a chat? I'll try to answer as much of your questions as I am legally allowed."

You hold some suspicion from the way she said her introduction. "Alright, who are you and who do you work for?"

The office lady continues smiling faintly like a seasoned receptionist.

"My name is Tabitha Stockbridge, I'm part of the RHG staff as I've mentioned. Although all I ever really do is manage the profile databases and take small-time errands."

You nod before continuing with the back-and-forth. "Okay, what's up with these fights then? Why are those such a big thing around here?"

Tabitha glances aside momentarily. "My best answer is that the Rock Hard Gladiators is a way of life. I think it all began when a bunch of people wanted a better system to keep track of their scoreboard, and maybe with a little rewards and incentives program."

"Okay, I guess I can buy that, but why do these gladiators fight?" you further inquire.

The office lady shrugs. "That's up to the individual, some people want to grow stronger, others want to be famous, there are many unnoticed individuals who are simply in it for the pay, while others have more esoteric reasons for participating like the swordswoman's wish to eradicate evil."

>>
File: 29.png (16 KB, 600x950)

16 KB PNG
>>2409435
And then Tabitha goes off on a tangent. "Of course, I don't know how they're going to deal with her. Yes, we can give people rewards like cash or something, but there are many whose continued participation is reward enough for them. And then there are those with hidden agendas but as long as they're not going against the system then we'll let them be."

You mentally note that down, no going against the system. "Are there any other rules I should know about?"

"Hmmm, I think you're supposed to fight regularly, twice a month at the most infrequent. Any longer and you're probably trying to leech benefits. Either that or you somehow got lost on your way to your next opponent. I think it will work out."

Tabitha remembers one more thing. "Oh right, do remember that killing the uninvolved is really frowned upon. Even the more animalistic gladiators like Bog and Naberius somehow abide by this code."

You nod again. "I may or may not have killed Dave here, is death a big deal around here or what?"

"Not really." Tabitha shrugs in uncertainty. "There are many ways someone can be brought back to life, at least a dozen of them are experimental. In the end, the only thing that matters is whether or not you wish to continue participating. Once you've signed up to be a gladiator, it's practically your career for life until you retire."

Taking a moment to process the information, you then ask "What do I get if I kill everyone?"

Tabitha immediately replies. "Technically not possible, but if you mean defeat everyone then it's also not possible. As you rise up the ranks and your list of wins grow larger, you're going to attract the attention of more powerful gladiators. Some of them are leaders of entire clans like Nemesis and Zetabrand."

Eventually a small ambulance drives into view.

"It seems our ride is here." the office lady states, "Y'know I'm surprised you're not howling in pain from the seawater getting into your wound, but I guess this conversation has distracted you enough. While you could have your wounds patched up then go on your way, how about a little ride with us to the HQ for some R&R and power testing? Maybe you'd find your next opponent there."

You can control blood, but not a person and especially not Dave. As far as you know, his skin is practically unbreakable. Normal people could be controlled if they have several gaping wounds all over their body. However, an easier way to control Dave is through the water soaking him.

Although if Tabitha's words are anything to go by, he'll probably be resuscitated at some point so he can fight another battle.

You accept Tabitha's offer and hitch a ride toward the RHG facility. Along the way, the two of you make small talk and she ends up revealing that she's also a gladiator...albeit an extremely mundane one. Apparently she accidentally entered her name to the databases during one nasty overtime shift. The next thing she knew "being an actual RHG" was added to her job description.

Eventually you arrive at the facility, heading to the medical wing where your flesh wound was quickly healed thanks to advanced science.

You ask for three different items, each one complimenting your abilities in combat in some way.

That's a response you weren't expecting.

"Wait what? How'd you know that?"

"It's an ability of mine...actually I'm just good at keeping tabs with people's ranks and all. You know I was expecting you to ask for something simpler, like a sword, or a knife, or maybe some armor. Tell you what, how about you pick one item in your batch and I'll see what I can do. In terms of seriously git gud, the hard gate for a super water gun is weight, not gun. Water jet cutters are super lethal, but are also plugged to giant reservoirs. If we want anything portable at that pressure, it needs to be more of a short-mid range closed loop system than a projectile.

"That's wonderful, can you also make it so that it can liquefy with me when I turn into water?" you excitedly add.

The staff member is lightly surprised. "Wait, you can turn into water? Huh, that's tricky. I'm not the head craftsman or anything, but I estimate it would take a month or so to integrate that feature. Maybe less if a tinkering gladiator or two would come around to help.
