Part 6.5

The fact that one of the Aos Sí is working in the mall at Saks Fifth Avenue is both strange and unsurprising. Strange because it's a sidhe working in a clothing store, unsurprising because it is a very high end clothing store. You know it's high end because it has more assistants than shoppers, and the glimpses of the few price tags you have seen are astronomical. you would love to escape and make Lynne take you somewhere far less expensive, but doing so without offending the sapphire haired, blue skinned Aos Sí would be difficult at best.

Especially since he's interested in you.

Fortunately his interest is entirely academic; the fact that you have managed to share your powers with your best friend intrigues him. The sidhe don't mind witches; they often have magicians of their own, though there is no real comparison in power. That doesn't make you helpless though, and he's well aware that you're capable of doing harm. His respect is very real, and while Kiora may not like him (not surprising, he's Irish), she won't do anything to get either you or Lynne in trouble.

Having been asked to call him Evian (obviously not his actual name, but possibly related to his power), it isn't a surprise to you that his hands are cool against your bare skin as he measures you. You're in a bra and panties, of course, but he's taking all the measurements. Evian is thoroughly professional, and Lynne is sitting sprawled in a nicely upholstered chair. You are looking at your reflection, and trying not to move much. Kiora is watching you with that familiar heat in her eyes, while Lynne is more interested in Evian.

Evian, in true faerie form, is not asking about the scars along your stomach.

"So you are thinking a backless dress for an evening? It is an excellent choice for one of Cam's exhibitions. Would be more interested in sapphire or a darker teal in the green shades?" He stands up, and studies your face, not critically, but carefully. Even such slight nuances are carried in his bearing and expressions.

"I'd rather not have....yes, all right, Lynne." She smiles in the most smug manner possible. Kiora nods sagely from her perch on the arm of the sofa-seat. "Teal is better, it doesn't make me look as pale. The lingerie is a lighter blue though; would that be a problem?"

"It shouldn't. If you would not mind changing into it, I would have a better idea of what I can find for you, though." You tense, and he notices, but he doesn't ask or say anything further.

[X] He's been professional so far, so that should be all right.

The problem isn't so much that he asked, but that it would be difficult to ask him to leave while you change. There are a couple of excuses you could make, sure....but realistically they would be excuses and he would know it.

So it's a lesson in etiquette for Lynne. Besides, Kiora's here, and she'll protect you if worse comes to worse. It won't, it shouldn't, but your shyness isn't entirely a matter of inhibitions. "All right," you murmur, and you suppress a smile at Lynne's wide eyed reaction. Kiora's look of heat becomes downright embarrassing, but you try and keep your calm. Lynne picks up the bag and starts taking off tags and removing the free hanger you were given, and then blinks as she notices you're neither asking Evian to leave, nor hesitating (much) about undressing as he watches you.

She doesn't say anything, wisely, as you slowly strip down, doing your best to ignore the sidhe warrior watching you. He is admiring you, which is natural and to be expected. You mentioned it to Lynne before, but this is her first instance of experiencing the situation. You neatly fold your clothing and he offers to take it from you. Ignoring the rush of heat along your breasts and body, you hand him your clothing and he sets it aside on a table with a purely decorative lamp.

When he turns back to you, he studies you frankly; that heavy, heated gaze makes you want to hide yourself but you control the urge as Lynne stands up and brings you the teddy. "You remind me of the Charites" Evian says softly. "Pannychis, or perhaps Paidia; I do not recall which it was who bore hair as red as yours." Lynne 's eyebrows shoot up. "Slender and youthful, though to be sure you are better endowed than they," he adds.

"Gracious of you," you murmur as you try and figure out how exactly best to put on the slinky lingerie. Evian smiles and bows over his arm. Kiora watches you dress with fascination bordering on obsessive. He doesn't take your mild pun as a direct thanks, which is good, he steps forward, assisting you with the lingerie. When he does so, the heat is gone, and it's as professional and dutiful as his measurements were, with no underlying heat or embarrassing looks. Likewise, when he studies you in it, it is perfectly casual and without any sexual undertone.

"I think I have the thing. I will return momentarily." He steps out of the dressing room and Lynne quickly steps up to you.
>>
"Why didn't you ask him to leave or say no?" she asks, a little shocked by your willingness to undress in front of a complete stranger.

"If I had, it would have been insulting; it would have meant I didn't trust him, that I was afraid he might overstep his boundaries. He probably wouldn't have gotten angry, but I'd really rather not annoy the Aos Sí any more than I have to." Looking down, you frown. "This is nice, but I think you're going way overboard."

Lynne smiles. "I'm not, trust me." She steps back as Evian steps back into the dressing room and closes the door. He's holing a halter-necked dress of shimmering blue the same color as your lingerie; there is a gap between the breasts, from neck to midriff, and a sparkling pendant of silver and crystal with a blue-green stone in it. It has a slender belt of the same material as the dress, clearly more decorative than not, and would only reach to your upper thighs. The back isn't ultra-low, thank Goddess, but the angled cut of the hem would bare a little more of your thigh, almost your hip.

"Would you care to try this on, Miss Caitrin?" he asks somewhat formally.

[] Yes, please....how did you end up working here?
[] I'm not sure....why this style? It seems a little....um....sparse.

Depends on the dress and the location you are buying from. If you are worried, Caitrin can try and get a 'feel' for the jewel and see if it is enchanted or magical. Getting caught could be a problem, though....

[X] Yes, please....how did you end up working here?

You're a little surprised by the presence of jewelry on a dress that hasn't been bought, but Lynne doesn't seem surprised, and you doubt he'd do something so obvious himself. You take a deep breath and try to ignore the slow burn in your cheeks. "Yes, please. Would you mind assisting me in putting it on? I've never worn something like this." Another lesson for Lynne, and you have to admit, he is very handsome, blue as he may be.

The look he gives you is warm and you feel the slow burn become real heat, the blush traveling from cheeks to ears. "It would be my sincere pleasure," he tells you as he steps close. The change in atmosphere is immediate and total; Lynne shifts uncomfortably in the chair and Kiora's expression is pure lust. You're going to meed to give her some kind of attention or gift after this, mostly to keep her from doing something illegal in public. A pixie might not be a goblin, but they're certainly not even slightly prudes.

He lowers himself to one knee before you, looking up at you as though you are the only woman in the world. You step into the dress carefully, even going so far as to place one hand on his shoulder to steady yourself and he smiles up at you, his eyes tracing your curves with a slow, deliberate gaze. Evian stands and slides the silken dress up your body, encasing your body in the light, shimmery material. He was right though, it matches the lingerie perfectly. You shiver as his fingers lightly brush your skin through the sheer panels of the teddy, and his smile becomes a wolfish grin; you can't help your reaction, and he knows it.

As he brings the neck of your dress to your throat, he steps onto the podium with you, and looks down at you, his hands moving around either side of your neck. With your heart racing a mile a minute, you reach back and lift your plaited hair for him, and he fastens the halter without looking. "I can see why one of the sidhe would take a job like this," you murmur softly, your body flush with heat, arousal completely eclipsing embarrassment. It's also as close as you can get to asking a personal question. "I don't think I could handle trying on another dress, Evian." That's strictly the truth; you underestimated how powerful being desired like that would be.
>>
"You flatter me, Miss Caitrin," he replies as he steps back. Lynne is staring and is blushing even worse than you were, while Kiora is glaring at the Aos Sí with barely contained jealousy. "I work here because there are a number of my kind in this city, and it pleases them to be taken care of by one of their own. Not to mention it reassures them that they won't have to fear accidental insults or untoward questions. It pays well, and more importantly, I am able to hear much of what happens in the world of faerie despite not being as close to it as I used to be." Volunteered information can't really prompt a question, so you can't really ask for more detail, but it's good to know. At the very least, he's someone you can trade gossip about the fae with, and it's likely he'd appreciate that.

You're going to have to wash your lingerie already.

Turning, you look at yourself in the mirrors, and you have to admit, you look very good in the dress. the slit in the front reveals the lingerie beneath, but the design of the teddy and the dress combine to make it seem like a separate layer of the dress, unless you were to pull the opening wide for some insane reason. A little - a very little - makeup, and you could pass for someone who actually has the amount of money the dress is worth. The lack of a price tag is pretty conspicuous though. Evian has relaxed his attentiveness, and it takes several deep breaths to calm yourself. "It's beautiful," you admit slowly. "I'm afraid to ask how much it is."

Lynne speaks up. "It'll only upset her, I'm taking care of it."

You flush, and looks down and Evian turns his head slightly. "You, Miss Caitrin, have nothing at all to be ashamed of. It is an honor working with a magician and someone who understands us." His compliment makes you look at him sharply, but he seems - and probably is - earnest.

[XX] This dress is perfect, and you'll have to just put up with Lynne's gift.
[X] ....Why is it an honor working with a magic- er, a witch?

While you get the part about understanding the fey, the part about working with a magician you don't quite get. "I'm not certain that I understand why it's an honor to work with a magician, but I do understand how difficult it can be working with ordinary people. Or even unusual people who don't know much about you." Avoiding actual questions is an art form, one you've been practicing, but don't have too much opportunity to practice. Still, Evian seems amicable enough to answer.

"I am no magician myself, but I have a great respect for those with such power. To wield the forces of magic and nature, to craft and weave spell and magic? there is very little of a higher calling, to my thinking." So it seems to be a personal thing, a respect he has for magic. It makes a certain amount of sense; even the weakest of sidhe who haven't studied magic have powerful magic. "you seem pleased with it."

Definitely have to get new shoes, but you have to admit the dress is lovely. You're going to owe Lynne big time for this, even if she is going to say don't worry about it. Some of the price tags had four figures on them - without decimal points. "It's gorgeous, and I think it will be perfect for Cam's exhibition." You studiously ignore Lynne beaming at you. "I certainly can't fault your taste. Or how you managed to find a dress in the perfect size off the rack."
>>
"Well, while I may not be a magician, where natural materials are concerned I do have a small talent for the shaping of it. I don't think anyone will notice the alterations at the register; if I do say so myself, you will be getting a bargain."

You're blushing again.

"Then I will make certain that people know who my tailor is," you inform him, the closest thing you can manage to a thank you. He bows from the waist over his arm again, and you curtsy for him. He assists you in taking off the dress, but this time it is with that cool, calm, thoroughly professional air. There is nothing cool or calm about the way Kiora is looking at you though. If the fey were inclined to rape, you'd definitely be worried, pixie or no.

You undress, still blushing, and he neatly folds and sets the clothing aside for you, aside from hanging up the dress. He is perfectly polite about ignoring the fact that your lingerie needs washing, ignoring that fact as easily as he turns off that intense sexual power of his. It's not even a power, per se, it's just....all that attention. as he goes to package the dress, Lynne stands up and shivers. "That's probably the most intense thing I've ever experienced," she murmurs softly to you.

[] Are you going to the exhibition? You're liable to see much more intense things there if he's right about his people being there.
[] You should have experienced it from my end. I'm going to have dreams for weeks.
[] That's....you should probably check on Kiora - because that could all too easily be construed as a challenge, or an offer. Or both!

[X] That's....you should probably check on Kiora - because that could all too easily be construed as a challenge, or an offer. Or both!

All sorts of little alarm bells go off in your mind, and you carefully glance at Kiora without turning your head. She's sitting on the edge of the arm of the couch, legs spread, leaning forward with both hands on the edge of the couch. Her wings are beating slowly, and she's looking at Lynne with the same predatory expression that she might have when watching snakes or lizards, both of which you have known her to kill and have you cook for her. Except with, you know, more sexy.

"Lynne?" She blinks in surprise and looks at you, your sotto voce alerting her to the fact that she needs to pay attention. "Do you remember what I told you about teasing Kiora?"

"Uh, yes?"

The soft hum of Kiora's wings prompts you to look up and her to turn around. Kiora is floating in midair and looking at Lynnette with a solemn expression, one that tells you she's planning something. Lynne holds out her hand instinctively and Kiora lands on it. You take a quick step back, even though you're half dressed and Lynne glances at you in alarm before realizing she'd better not stop paying attention to the pixie on her hand.

Kiora allows her the minor faux pas, and half-curtsies, half-bows to Lynne, her tiny eyes closed, and offer her hand to Lynne. Confused as she is, Lynne offers the pixie her other hand palm up. Kiora takes her middle finger in both hands, one on top, the other underneath and turns Lynne's hand over, startling the volleyball player by being strong enough to make her feel the need to allow her hand to be turned. Kiora opens her eyes and steps forward, leaning over Lynne's hand and looking into brown eyes with her lavender and pink ones....and then she kisses Lynne's hand, between her pointer and middle finger.

Evian has the good fortune to step in as Kiora delivers that kiss, and he silently closes the door behind him before turning all his attention on the mismatched pair. You watch too, well aware that Lynne is truly and well in for it. He greedily drinks in the sight, just as Kiora had while watching him dress you, and just as enviously. You lift your clothing up yo your body, hiding the inevitable reaction as you watch Kiora kiss Lynne's hand.

Whatever quality that makes you immune to glamour is transferred to those whom you use the Waking the Witch ritual with, and that usually includes Kiora's glamour. However, the demifey, as immortal and touch and strong as they are, live in a world where most creatures are tougher, larger, and stronger still. As a result glamour isn't just a means of hiding or distracting people....it's a weapon. Having been a victim of that kind of weaponized glamour before, you know what to expect, and it pierces even Lynne's defense against glamour. Not easily, but Kiora is going all out.
>>
She lifts one tiny leg and bows over that long fingered, strong hand of Lynnette's, and lays both her hands on either knuckle as she kisses the space between them. You can almost see the wave of pleasure that washes over the unsuspecting woman as Kiora gives that kiss all she has and then some. Lynne is galvanized, her hands shaking, her breath catching, and the flush starting at her cheeks creeping quickly down her throat to places under her shirt. Kiora slowly moves forward as well as up, sliding her tiny breasts along the pair of fingers she pushes herself off of, her eyes going to Lynne's shocked, blushing face. Her knees just about buckle as Kiora takes flight; you quickly step in, grabbing Lynne under one arm and attempting to keeping her steady.

Not up, because if she falls you're just going to go down with her.

"H-holy sh-shit...." Lynne breathes softly, her hands going to her chest and still trembling. "That's gotta be better than cocaine!" she murmurs. Kiora beams at the compliment, understanding it perfectly.

"It's just as addictive," murmurs Evian, slowly making his way across the room and gently taking Lynne from you and allowing you the chance to get dressed as he gently and easily supports her. As he guides her to a seat, he smiles and glances at Kiora respectfully. "The demifey are not to be taken lightly, Miss Lynne; even we are not immune to their power should they decided to wield it against us. I rather envy you....though not enough to risk such a kiss myself!"

You finish dressing and Kiora flits to your shoulder, settling there in a sexy little pose, entirely too pleased with herself. "Well, I did warn her," you mention casually, glancing at the delicate creature that is your familiar. Her grin is a bit too shark-like for your taste.

After not thanking Evian and giving Lynne a few minutes to recover her very scattered wits, you reluctantly allow her to pay for the shimmery blue dress. She ignores the tiny whine you make when you see the astronomical price tag, which the cashier doesn't seem to overhear either. It might not be four figures, but it's definitely closer rather than further from that number of figures. "Don't worry, the shoes won't be nearly that bad."

"I am not wearing high heels," you warn Lynne, the finality in your tone of voice making the woman grin and the cashier smile. "there is no price high enough to pay me to break my neck."

"Well, there's the Cat's Paws," Lynne points out, and you blink, having not thought of that.

"Still...."

Evian is near the door as the two of you make your way out. "One last thing," he mentions, smiling. "There is a tribe of fairies in the mall, on the entry level. You may wish to avoid Breanne and her people; they are fiercely territorial. But their presence here makes it more comfortable for the few of our kind as a whole who stay here."

You recall seeing them in the planter boxes on the way in, and they hadn't seemed too interested at the time. Then again, it's much easier to harass you leaving then arriving, not to mention better for the businesses. "They must have been the demifey we saw earlier. I will keep the warning in mind, Evian. Fare well; perhaps we can stop by one of the cafes some time?"

"I would be honored," he says with a bow, and you and Lynne both curtsy. Kiora simply watches him, silent as ever, and you're not terribly surprised he doesn't take offense after the show she put on for him. He does bow to her though, and she inclines her head, accepting the sidhe's respect.

"Did you just ask him on a date?" Lynne asks curiously.

"Not really. That would have to be a much more formal sort of thing. The Aos Sí are very traditional, but at the same time very relaxed socially. If we wanted to sleep with him, he would be fine with that, and if we wanted to have sex with him, he would be fine with that. But the faerie don't get married unless they get pregnant, and so you'd better be really damn careful with what you sleep with." Kiora nods emphatically.

"Don't you mean 'whom'?"

"....Not really."

"Oh."

[X] Decompression. Candle and Bell it is, maybe coffee at the food court.

"You want coffee?" you ask casually, glancing up to the next floor where the food courts are.

Lynne considers. "Not yet, that Orange Julius was pretty filling. Maybe a bit later."

You nod, but you head towards the escalator anyways. "I'm not ready for another dress, so let's get those candles and maybe some incense for tonight." Lynne agrees readily enough, while Kiora sits up and takes interest; the little shop often has fresh flowers set out. You don't know what she's disguised herself as, but the ride up the escalator is a little more nerve wracking than usual since everyone stares at you - specifically, at Kiora - on the way up. Kiora doesn't care, of course, and sitting on your shoulder as she is she could be anything from a cat to a snake, or anything else for that matter.

Candle and Bell isn't exactly a 'witches shop', but it does have an awful lot of things a witch might use. Candles, candle snuffers, nick-knacks, potpourri, magnifying glasses, lamps, crystals, crystal balls, stands for same, tarot cards, dried herbs and soaps of various sorts....a hodgepodge of useful things. And lots of useless ones of course, but you take what you can get. Lynne likes looking around the place as much as you do, and for all her athleticism, she has a fondness for scented soaps and potpourri. You prefer the essential oils and cooking rings (one of the reasons you like standard light bulbs), especially since you can use them as perfumes as well.

"Hey, babe, why don't you use Tarot cards?" she asks as you look through the books, holding up a Rider Waite deck.

[X] I could. Why, want a reading? They're not too difficult, but remember my curse.
[X] Write in? There's no special rules saying I couldn't though, there's plenty of Celtic influenced decks and such. Did you want to learn?

Kiora is fluttering around one of the many floral displays, mixtures of dried flowers and recently picked ones. Turning your attention to the sealed deck of cards, you look at the back, glancing over the blurb without actually reading it. "Tarot is more of a Eastern European or Romany sort of thing, though there's no special rules against it. They weren't really popular in the Isles where I've been taking most of my cues from." You glance over at the case she picked it up from. "There's lots of styles of decks and such, though, and it's not like I couldn't learn. I try and avoid that kind of divination for the same reason I avoid Ouija boards though."

Understanding dawns quickly. "Talking Dogs."

"Yeah, pretty much. Still, it isn't hard to learn. Would you like me to teach you?" Lynne's eyes sparkle and she smiles. "I take it that's a yes. Well, pick a deck you like or that seems to call to you, and I'll start teaching you today. Rune-stones are similar, but they're North European. I think there's a deck of rune cards for divination though." She nods and starts poring over the decks with greater interest, being ass careful in her selection as you would be if you were so inclined.

While she does that you pick up another book on herbalism - actual herbology, not witch-herbs - and a an odd book about mystic hand gestures used by Tibetan monks. Then it's candles, candles, candles. Well, not THAT many. A dozen varied colors and six color-changing ones (black over white and black over red) is plenty for now. A couple of small sachets and a small jar of richly scented potpourri for the ritual tonight, and you're set. Lynnette selects a surprisingly cute deck of dark Gothic girls in an exaggerated art style, and you smile, her blush at your unspoken comment more than gratifying enough.
>>
You don't recognize the large boned girl who mans the till, but she seems a little wary at first. She makes the O.K. sign at you surreptitiously, and Lynne takes a step back and grunts softly as though struck. Your response is quite different and far more obvious; the Horned God's sign, but with the back of your hand shown rather than the front, right handed and pointer finger at eye level. She steps back as if struck as you counter-spell her warding gesture instinctively and automatically.

Blushing, the young woman whose name tag claims she is 'Tiffany' apologizes immediately. "I'm sorry, I didn't know you were a practitioner....you eyes, you know...." Kiora flits over to make sure Lynne is all right, and settles on her shoulder, whispering in her ear and offering her some yellow flower petals.

Huh, what is it about heterochromia that makes someone -less- likely to be a witch? If anything I would think it'd be the opposite.
>>
>>2433529
...Also while it's nice to see Kiora being so helpful to Lynne; I vaguely suspect an ulterior motive but I don't know enough about Kiora's behavior to be sure, and it doesn't seem severe enough to merit confrontation or investigation as it stands.

[X] That's all right, I get that sometimes. I didn't know anyone here was a witch though.
[X] Write in? You should still be careful.

While your not particularly happy about what just happened, it's not unusual. Well, no, it is unusual, because you've never had an actual witch or psychic do that to you. when ordinary people do it there is so much....'oomph' behind it. You glance at Lynne, who is rubbing the petals on her closed eyelids under Kiora's direction; the tall girl immediately relaxes, so whatever effect it had is quickly wearing off under the ministrations of your familiar.

"It's not uncommon, and it's understandable. I didn't realize anyone in this shop was a witch...." While the urge to ask for more information about her is strong, she's already jumped the gun once. More concerning is the blatantly worn pentacle, the use of the term 'practitioner', and her strong reaction to your atropopaism. You set the candles on the counter, and there is an immediate look of concern when she spots the black candles, aside from the white and red candles coated in black. "Are you member of a coven?"

That makes her brighten instantly, and you immediately regret asking. "Oh yes, we have six members - all women of course - and we are doing a ritual dedication to the Goddess on the upcoming Equinox. We're white witches of course," she adds, though she maintains enough presence of mind to start ringing up your purchases. You collect the sachets and bath crystals as well as the Tarot deck Lynne was planning on buying and add them to your order. This proves to be a mistake because the bright expression blooms into an even brighter expression when she realizes that she's with you. "Oh, are you both practitioners? Would you like to join us?" The all too eager and hopeful note in her voice only increases your suspicion of the kind of coven she's involved with.
>>
"I appreciate the offer, but I have to decline, I'm afraid." Her expression falls instantly, but she recovers quickly. Kiora waves at you and Lynne blinks her eyes, which are rather bloodshot, though she seems all right otherwise. Kiora shakes her head violently, though you'd already figured out that you wouldn't do well with that particular coven. "It isn't anything personal, mind you, it's just that I have the feeling that my path doesn't coincide with that of your coven." You also suspect she's one of the less liked members - she's got that sense of desperation to her.

She looks worried again, and the Tarot deck Lynne chose seems to make her even more worried. "I hope that you'll reconsider, miss...." you don't supply your name and merely smile, though it's a bit forced. "Anyway, blessed be." Yep - modern Wiccans. Nothing inherently wrong with that, but definitely at odds with your traditions, and you don't think they'd consider you much of a white witch. That, and the fact that you're a God worshiper as well as a Goddess worshiper wouldn't smooth anything over.

"Thank you. Do be more careful in the future - you can never tell who or what you might accidentally offend. God and Goddess watch you." As you suspected, she's a bit taken aback by your invoking of the God, and she can't see through glamour. You don't exactly hurry, but you do leave with Lynne in tow. Kiora lands on your shoulder and sits, hanging onto stray strands of your hair.

"That sucked," Lynne murmurs softly and you slow down once you're out of eyesight of the shop windows.

[] She has attacked you and yours, you're perfectly allowed to Jinx her without repercussions. Well, at least, from your deities.
[] A Word of Power to remind her that she shouldn't take risks like that or underestimate other witches would be appropriate.

[X] Blood of My Blood will let you fix everything that Lynne might be suffering from, lingering side effects and the like.
[X] Write in? It could have been worse.

Kiora pats your cheek and you nod, already trying to figure out where you can do this without causing too much trouble. "Can you find me a pin or a needle, sweetheart? Careful of the fairies, and you don't have to make any bargains. I have my athame." She nods and darts off quickly, a flicker of movement easily lost among the lights and reflections of the mall. You take Lynne's hand and squeeze, walking with her to the food court. It's not necessary, but it does make her feel a little better.

"What the heck did she do to me? I mean, I've had a couple of spells cast on me before, but that wasn't anything like those...." The food court is busy, and that makes it ideal for what you need to so - or at least, what you can do.

"I'll take care of it. Just wait here." Seating her of to the side of the food court, you leave her with the bags and get a couple of cups of good coffee. Well, a mocha for her and a latte for you, with whole milk. None of that diet stuff for you. A couple of salt packets find their way into your pocket as well. when you get back to the seats, Kiora is there with a rather nice hatpin over her shoulder and looking pleased. You're pretty sure she didn't steal it, but some little old lady might be missing it later, though she undoubtedly has a flower or some leaves in it's place. Maybe a shiny coin. "That will be perfect."

You sit across from Lynne, push her drink to her, and take the hatpin from Kiora. "It was a warding gesture against the evil eye. You've seen me do stuff like that, and I've taught you some. Unfortunately, because of the kind of witch I am - and therefore you are - it works really, really well against us. Part of it is she has the convictions of a 'white witch', but she's got a fair bit of talent and maybe a good amount of power. I have the feeling not everyone in her coven appreciates that. Hold your hand over the table." she does so and you take a deep breath, drawing on your power and your will. "It could have been much worse - she was just doing it out of habit, not really focusing it. But we got what we went in for, and she didn't decide we were evil, so there's that."
>>
As she obliges, you toss a scattering of salt on the table. You draw your finger in a quick circle under her hand on the table, long hours of practice malign it near perfect. "It felt like she poked me in the eyes," Lynne mentions, "which kind of makes sense I guess. did it work so well because she's a witch too?" You nod absently, tracing two curved lines in the circle, linking yourself to her. God on the left, Goddess on the right. Kiora hovers over the circle, and you feel her power merging with yours, sealing the bindings and wrapping you and Lynne tightly together.

"Quick stab," you warn Lynne and she nods, relaxing rather than steeling herself. You prick her middle finger, then yours, and then press your palm to hers, straightening both your hands. The sense of fatigue and the dull ache at the back of your head isn't yours, it's Lynne's; she wasn't kidding about the whole poked eyes thing.

Blood of my Blood, Heart of my Heart, Soul of my Soul;
Beloved of Mine, beloved of His, beloved of Hers.
From thee I Take, to thee I Give, 'twixt and 'tween for me and thee;
With thee I share, with thee I leave, from thee I cleave.

She jerks, but you grab her hand, not letting her pull away immediately. She shudders and you feel the pain leaving her head, feel the fatigue washing away from her. You smile, feeling the benevolence of the Goddess and the protectiveness of the God settle over both of you. The beatific smile and shimmer of tears that forms in Lynne's eyes is all the reassurance you need that she feels the same. Kiora floats down and lays her hands on each of yours, and you feel the spell collapse, clean and simple,m all traces of it melting away from your awareness.

She looks at you gratefully. "Thanks, Cait." You smile and shake your head. She laughs and pokes you gently. The injuries from the hatpin are gone, and you deliver it back into Kiora's safekeeping.

"Nothing I wouldn't do for a sister," you murmur and she laughs again.

>To Be Continued....

Thanks for running.

Could you talk more about the Evil Eye? I know it's a common folklore tradition, and I know the Fomorian king Balor was said to have an extremely potentially form of it, but I don't know what it is in this quest in terms of who (or what) can use it and what it does.
>>
>>2433663

Thanks for running!
>>
>>2433669
If it's something that will come up later on in the quest then waiting is good, because while I like the qna after the quest is over, I also like the way you're able to add exposition while still keeping the story flowing.
>>
>>2433669
Balor is the progenitor of the Evil Eye - his could literal set fire to entire countries and kill armies.

The Evil Eye is basically the ability to will evil onto others through a hard gaze, and many witches are said to possess it, especially those in service to evil. It's often associated with cataracts, moon-eyed people (such as Cait), and wandering eye sufferers. While Caitrin herself does not have it, her innate ability to jinx people could be seen as a form of it, though witches and sorcerers who actually possess it can do much worse than minor bouts of misfortune. Such people would be able to use a power the equivalent of Caitrin's Hexing Spell at a mere glance, with no sign of it being used other than that glance, and the power of a heavy curse or serious streak of truly bad luck, even fatal luck.
>>
>>2433708
We can see glamour due to our witchy ways, so does our heterochromia actually do anything?
>>
>>2433717
Besides repeatedly give people the wrong idea, I mean. A plot value, to be sure.
>>
>>2433717
It's perfectly normal as far as anyone can tell. It's a recessive trait in her family, but people in her family who have it tend to be witches or psychics. On the other hand some who have it are perfectly normal, and others who don't have the Talent, as her father's grandfolks called it.

Caitrin hasn't been able to research it as thoroughly as she likes due to her birth father moving back to Scotland.
>>
>>2433708
So it is something some witches can do, but mostly "bad" witches? I guess I was confused by why Tiffany was mollified by our counterspell, as if it indicated we were "good" and not just strong/skilled. Is it because invoking one of the Tuatha de Danaan and being able to use the power of one of their strongest foes mutually exclusive?
>>
>>2433739
She wasn't 'mollified' as much as she had her spell broken and was confused. the charm against the evil eye is simple but effective, and the fact that Caitrin and Lynne have the ability to jinx people and place hexes on people it is effective agaisnt them if the witch using the charm believes and has the modicum of power to back it up.

Caitrin, being an atropopaist by innate power, can counter simple charms and even some potent spells instinctively, and that surprised and shocked Tiffany, whose teachings apparently doesn't account for such abilities. It's unlikely Tiffany understood what she was attempting to counter very well, and was habitually protecting herself rather than attempting to harm Caitrin. Caitrin, on the other hand, is aware that one can have both the power of the Evil Eye and the power to counter it. Theft and appropriation of power is a common theme in myths and legends.

The rest of the shopping trip is largely uneventful, for which you thank the god and Goddess profusely. The only other problem you could have run into were the fairies, which you tactfully avoid by the simple expedient of using a different exit than the one you saw them at. This did force you to walk around the building, but it's a nice day, and Kiora appreciates the outside time. She won't enjoy the ride back, of course, but it won't be as bad as it would have been in your car.

Though, you could be wrong about the fairies; they may have been spying on you and decided they didn't want any of that. It's a nice thought....but doubtful.

The black dress you forced Lynne to settle on is actually very nice. Not Saks nice, but nice enough that she says she wouldn't mind taking you dancing in a nice club in. She fully intends to go with you and Karen, though; she doesn't trust the shape-shifting woman any further than she could throw her, diamonds or no. A pair of black flats, nearly Mary-Jane style and shined to a brilliant polish, combined with a strangely lacy set of glittery blue flats round out both outfits. She was kind of disappointed you wouldn't go for the high heels in either outfit, but you were adamant on the matter. Spells and rituals aside, there's always the possibility you might have to run for one reason or another and you aren't going to do it in high heels.

Then it's to the grocery store for some extra potion-making supplies, as well as some extra things for dinner. Her high energy diet doesn't do much for you, really, aside from threaten to expand your waistline, so a slightly less protein heavy lunch and dinner are in order. You both get odd looks from the salesperson, mostly because noodles, Parmesan cheese, basic marinara ingredients, and fresh herbs and veggies are not typically combined with chocolate sauces, Marciano cherries, whipping cream, confectioners sugar, and nearly a pound of processed sugar. Or it happens all the time and he's just disgusted by the idea. You don't know, and don't particularly care, at the moment.

Kiora's ecstatic about the confections that you plan on using in potion-making; you'll probably have to bathe her after.

Once you arrive back at Lynne's house, Kiora sequesters herself in a planter and communes with nature once again, thoroughly ill. You kiss the top of her head and she smiles up at you wanly, but remains in the planter box. Lynne starts your delicates on a wash cycle, but the dresses are definitely dry-clean only, so you'll have to suffer with them as is. "You should really wear some matching jewelry, you know," she suggests and you glance at her as you start setting out the potion ingredients, both those you brought and those you bought.

[X] I have a little bit of jewelry, nothing special maybe but they'll do well enough.
[X] Write in? And before you ask, you won't be getting me anything real, period.

"I have some jewelry. It'll go fine with the black dress, and it'll be okay with the other dress, but it's kind of overkill, if you ask me." She starts to say something but you fix her with a hard glare. "And no, you won't be buying me anything outside of a thrift shop. If you're lucky, I might let you buy me something for Christmas. About ten years from now."

She looks slightly abashed. "Well, if you say so. But I was going to say, you'll at least need a tennis bracelet or a nice watch with the blue dress. Otherwise it won't look right."

As you finish setting out the mixing bowls and pans, Kiora drifts in, looking a little better. She's still got the hatpin, and you consider finding a piece of ribbon for her to use as a sword-belt. The pixie settles on a hand towel off top the side and looks at the array of sweet-makings and honey, as well as herbs, flower petals, candles, and incense. She licks her lips and you smile at her, giving her just a brief nod. You'll have some set aside just for her - not potions, but actual sweets, of course.

"I'll borrow something from my mom, then," you murmur. A thought strikes you - or rather, nags at you quietly again - and you glance at the tall woman, who is dressed in simple jeans and t-shirt, and is tying a simple white apron around her waist. No gloves - that would interfere with the magical processes you plan on using. You bite your lip and Kiora frowns at you, making you stop. Lynne is starting to hum again, the domesticity of the scene striking in it's contrast of how she acts otherwise.

[X] Ask her if she really means what she says about being a member of your coven. She's been a little....well....almost 'wifey' as of late.
[X] Write in? I'm not complaining about all the help you've given me, but I have to say I'm....I think I'm a little surprised?

You try and frame your thoughts a little better as you finish preparing for the potion-making spells. It's difficult because you don't want to offend her, or worse, make her feel bad. The problem is you're getting some weird mixed signals from her. Not 'she wants to sex you up' signals, but even weirder 'she wands to be your wife or husband' type signals. Even when she's been granted your powers before she hasn't quite acted like this, or when she's helped you investigate or poke your nose into other things. The questions are bugging you and you kind of need a clear head for this.

She sets a trio of pans on the stove and sets them to cook, except for the one for melting chocolate, which she sets to boil. You get out two gallons of milk and set those aside and unwrap some paraffin for making chocolates. "Lynne....thanks for all the help. Not just the dress, and all, but all of this. But I'm....kind of confused. Maybe a little surprised." She looks at you, leaning on the counter and clearly inviting an explanation. "Well....to be blunt, you're kind of freaking me out."

Lynette grins, until she looks at how Kiora is watching her. That tiny, impassive face can be awfully intimidating despite being only a little larger than your thumbnail. "Well....what do you mean, babe?"

"I mean....I'm not going to say this right, I know it. Um....well, you usually enjoy doing witchcraft with me. And I like teaching you and having you help me. But it's not just that, it's more than that this time. Letting me sleep with you. Cooking breakfast. Humming while we prepare. Little....little things, that kind of add up to a bigger thing." Her expression clears, and you feel your tension level rise quickly. "What?"
>>
"It's not a mystery, Cait. I'm enjoying myself a lot. I like being a witch, you're right, but I like that you're coming to me for more than just witchy stuff. You're...." She takes a deep breath. "You're starting to get pretty weird, Caitrin." You stare at her, and she smiles. "Exactly, stuff like that. You don't say thank you very much. You don't ask questions other people would ask automatically. You don't poke your nose into a person's business even when it directly involves you. You act more like Kiora than Kiora herself does sometimes." You bite your lip, and you ignore Kiora glaring at you.

"When you came to my bed last night, there wasn't any doubt that you weren't there for sex or anything, you know. But you needed to be close to someone human, Cait. You're not like, a monster or anything, but you're thinking less and less like a normal person. So when you got a date with Jack, when you asked me for help....you are in deeper trouble than you realized. It didn't even occur to you that you might die." You start to protest and she shakes her head. "Even after I warned you that we needed help you were reluctant, Cait. You're not really thinking clearly about this."

[] She might be right. No, she is right - it's not a magic spell, that would be gone after the ritual last night.

"I can't really disagree....I've been dealing with more faeries than I have people, honestly." You rub your stomach slightly, and while she notices, Lynne doesn't ask if it still hurts. It aches sometimes but the wounds are healed. "But it's not really reasonable to ask Jack to become a witch, even temporarily, and hunt werewolves with us even if we're just trying to find one. Karen....well you've seen Karen!" She grimaces and then nods. "But you're right. I haven't been all there, not like you have. But you're also dodging the question. Faeries do that a lot too, it's in their nature to turn things around."

She stands up and shrugs expressively. "Like I said, it's not a mystery, hon. I'm happy." You blink at her a couple of times. "I like it when you're here. I do get lonely sometimes. And I really enjoy this sort of stuff with you. I love that you trust me enough to sleep in my bed with me and aren't afraid I'll try anything." You don't tell her that faeries do the same thing constantly; it kind of proves her point though. "I'm worried for you, sure, but you're letting me help you, and that makes me happy. I'm learning new stuff and I'm going to learn how to be a cat tonight!" Lynne's smile is incredibly infections, and you smile despite yourself.

You take a deep breath. "So....if I do find someone, someone we can trust, you would want to be part of a coven with me? With all the trouble and hardship that comes with? Because my curse isn't going to go away. I avoid people partly because I'm scared for them."

She steps around the table and pulls you into a hug. you slowly wrap your arms about her waist. "We'd be fine, Cait. I'll take care of you, even if I got married. You're my best friend, and you mean the world to me." You're not crying, you're not. It would ruin the chocolates. "Now, lets make some magic, okay?"
>>
With a silent nod, you lace your fingers with hers and take a deep breath, before paying to the god and Goddess, and their children, to bless this hearth and all that is done within. And then you get to making potions and sweets, and sweets into potions.

It takes several hours, but by the time you're done, you have six healing draughts, peppermint sticks that when broken will draw wolves - and werewolves - to you and make them calm, chocolates that will make you beautiful and alluring, ribbon candy that will nourish someone for an entire day with a single piece (they're all vanilla, though, because you used the strawberry for the healing draughts), and gumdrops that are literally irresistible to anyone except witches. You've also fed Kiora enough sugar to fuel her for a week and made a batch of sweets to share with friends.

Cleaning up was relatively easy, and all three of you are dozy, between the spells and the sugar high wearing off. Sucking on a last sliver of lemon drop, you lean back against the counter and watch Lynne make the final swipes with a towel to dry off the other one. "I really need to learn some more spells," you grouse, and Lynne laughs. "Maybe I'll make a couple during spring break."

"That would be cool. I'm pooped, boss. I say we take those naps."

"No argument from me," you agree readily enough. You push yourself from the counter and Lynne hugs you again, while Kiora settles on your shoulder. "About six? Enough time for dinner and then the ritual?"

"Sure, sounds good, babe." She leans over and Kiora hops up on your shoulder and kisses Lynne's cheek. "'Night, you two." You reply with a soft hum, and head to your bedroom, switching into a nightshirt and clean panties before crawling into bed. Kiora settles next to you, and unsurprisingly, you drift off almost immediately.

You're wakened by soft, strange gasps, cheerful giggles, and delicate moans. It takes a moment to figure them out, and when you do you realize the giggles and one of the whispered voices belongs to Kiora, who is distinctly not in the bed with you.

[] Better make sure Lynne is okay....just to be safe.
[] Kiora wouldn't do anything unasked; and Lynne knows what she was in for. They're fine.
[] Living room might be a good bet to move down to - furthest away from the, uh, noise.
[] Write in?

If it's a deadlock, I'm not adverse to surreptitiously checking on them. In the interest of Lynne's safety of course.

[X] Better make sure Lynne is okay....just to be safe.

The soft noises prompt an intense blush, but you can't help worrying. Kiora is not the one you're worried about of course; Lynnette might have your resistance to glamour, but Kiora's skills with it can - and did, as demonstrated - overwhelm it and her. Still, Kiora wouldn't do anything actually non-consensual. And she's well aware that Lynne might put more importance on the act than you'd prefer. But mostly you don't want Lynne getting hurt, and not in a physical way.

You slip out of bed - it's only three now, you have plenty more nap time - and make your way up the stairs as quietly as possible. Less voices and more noises, and your blush deepens, but there's something else; Kiora's voice carries and is much more....loud, than it ever has been. That alone makes you curious and wary. On the other hand it is kind of a private act.

Well, sort of; Kiora's an exhibitionist of sorts anyways, and the fae concept of 'privacy' is barely extant.

When you arrive at the door, it's cracked open, and you can easily see in side. It doesn't take long to determine that yes, Lynne is fine - more than fine! - and Kiora is in fact the fae in the room with her....it's definitely consensual, and Lynne is giving as good as she gets. you slip silently away, but the image stays with you; Kiora, the size of a young teen, though more womanly in shape, straddling Lynne as Lynne supports her with both hands. Her head thrown back, dark hair shimmering, and her skin shimemrign faintly, as she allows Lynne to touch her.

You didn't know she could be that size.

Making your way back down to your bedroom, you mostly shut the door, ad let yourself drift back to sleep. Lynnette is safe, and kiora - large Kiora! - is being careful, sweet, and not using any magics on the hapless woman. Sleep comes quickly, and with it the knowledge that soon you will be sharing magic and secrets of your own with Lynne. Kiora's secret is what you drift to sleep on....you didn't know that demifey could change their size.

Also I like the implication that Caitrin has had some rough times in the past with the scars on her stomach, I'm also curious as to why Kiora disapproves of Caitrin biting her lip, is it because that's typically when Caitrin feels like lying?

Caitrin's experiences with the fae have not always been good. There is more than one reason her athame is enchanted to be both silver and iron in nature.
