On the last thread you partook on a dinner with the Lannisters of the Rock, turning down Tywin's offer of employment on his fleet. Whether or not he took it as a slight still remains to be seen.

The Rather ballsy move of standing up to Lord Tywin ended up earning you an appreciation of his envious brother. After you finished tutoring the Maester on matters of blacksmithing, you were approached by Ser Tygett Lannister who commended you on your ambition and approached you with a job offer. To get one of Gerion's bastards off the Rock.

When god gives you lemons, you make lemonade. Deciding this was a prime opportunity for a real estate deal, you offered to sell your old workshop to house the mother and the child in Oldtown. After a brief sales speech, you managed to make a neat little profit on your abode.
Of course, your mother wasn't too happy about the deal. She'd rather you keep distance from a house as politically volatile as the Lannisters and voiced her disapproval of you selling your old home to them.

After finishing your maiden voyage by returning to Oldtown, you decided to face east and spend the rest of the remaining time before the war doing escort work for a Qarthese merchant who was traveling to Braavos. During this time you earned a bit of infamy amongst the pirate vessels sailing in the narrow sea.

When the time for the rebellion came nigh, you set sail to Dragonstone find the Master of Ships and present yourself and your ship into his service. Stannis was as expected, busy with his work on the Capital, but before making voyage there, you told Maester Cressen of the very real possibility of Greyscale epidemics on Dragonstone, a warning which he did seem to take into very real consideration.

After reaching the Capital, you sought out the Master of Ships immediately and scheduled a session to display exactly what you've to offer to him if he accepts you as part of the Royal fleet. You even gave Stannis 40 Matchlocks and a 3500 shot keg of black powder to him to further emphasize the point.

After a brief display of how the weapons functioned and how powerful they were against armor in the Red Keep's archery range, both Davos and Stannis seemed to find the act of shooting with your blackpowder weapons somewhat enjoyable, but complained of the complicated loading procedure of the matchlocks.

Right now however, you're making maps in preparation for the coming invasion.

[1/2]

You sent out your men to go and look for Ser Hector Heronford's school. The Capital might be a big place, but you reckon there's not THAT many professional teachers of martial arts in the region.

Whilst they were out looking for Ser Hector, you decided to ruthlessly abuse your knowledge as a former Ironborn and create some strategic and tactical maps on the Isles on whatever routes you can remember, of natural defenses, shallows, currents.
All the works.

In the end you ended up doing a pretty damn good job at it.
Then again you did pay money for the Citadel to learn about the importance mapmaking and cartography when it comes to warfare, so you should at least be able to do this much.
Hell, you doubt there is any map like this in all of Westeros. Iron Islands was pretty much a hermit kingdom whenever they were sailing and they weren't the sort to write things down that often.

Sure, it might not contain all the knowledge. It heavily disregards much of the smaller isles and you don't really know what goes on in some of the more obscure coasts, but you did sail plenty enough that anyone planning an invasion would find this an invaluable tool.
Having run so many errands for your previous dad left you with plenty of knowledge in regards of who produces what and how to get there easiest and for an army that's in a foreign land in need of supplies, that's quite precious knowledge.

Come evening, the sailors returned empty handed, but did leave a notice to some of the town criers on your behalf to let anyone who knows the address of Ser Hector Heronford to show up your vessel next morning to guide you for a silver coin.
Considering the wages of these lads, you reckoned it a decent enough sacrifice to make and come sunrise, there was a man that had the whiff of a drunkard waiting outside of your ship.

"Diss here where you get the free silver right?"
"If you can guide me Ser Hector Heronford's apartment, then yes."
"He livesh in vishn vishesninn, the big hill with all blackshmiths."
"Visenya's Hill?"
"Thatsh it. Wher's mah silver?"
"What's your name man?"
"Huggor! Whaths it to you?"
"Have seen the building he lives in?"
"I've sheen it ye. Whenever dey give alms at Balor's Shept I walk past it."
You flick him a silver
"There's another in it for you if you've the time to show me the building."
"Right! I've time alright."
"Good. One moment, I'll round up the lads."

The fellow looks shifty enough that you decide to hide extra six pistols under your coat and have six men as guards. If he was planning on doing something, he should at least be deterred when he sees a bunch of burly sailors armed with pointy things.

True to his words, the drunkard did in fact lead you to the right place without cutting through any alleys or any stupid bullshit like that. Then again, a man with a skull on his hat and a sword on his hip isn't necessarily the sort of person you want to fuck with.

"There. See? Told you true."
"His sigil. You told it true enough. Fair pay for fair work."
You toss him another silver and he happily grabs it
"Thanks fer easy money! I'll drink to your 'ealth today."

Your smelly, but surprisingly honest guide swaggers on down the hill whilst you and your men go walk towards the building. There was a few rotating training dummies on the outside of the building which no one was using at the moment.

Above the front door there was a wooden sign with letters carved on to it.
Heronford's Hall of Chivalry
Undearneath it hung his arms, the shield with the familiar heron on white and orange.

You decide to ring the bell on the door and as you do, a muffled, yet familiar voice comes from the inside as a response.
"We're closed till noon!"

>Peek from a window. "Let me in dude, I'm a fairy."
>"In the name of the King! Open this door."

[1/2]

"Open this door or I'm stealing your fecking training dummies ya cunt!"
After a moment you see someone peek from the window
"Who the hell are you supposed to be?"
"Is that how you greet all the lads you knight Hector? It's me Arthur Tallon. We last saw eachother at Harrenhal."
He looks at you for a moment as if doubting
"You've grown."
"Well I wasn't going to remain a manlet forever."
"One moment, I'll open the door."

He lets you inside his training hall, within which you see a familiar looking set of armor, still bearing the dent it took in Harrenhal with your name and coat of arms etched on a brass plate under it. There were other items as well. Shields, Swords, A Broken Lance all with a name and heraldry inscribed on them.

"Mementos from students I knighted. It's a decent motivator for some. I ransomed your armor when you weren't looking and it sort of started from there."
"Bit expensive for a souvenir isn't it?"
"It might have been in hindsight, but I did end up winning a decent amount of gold on that Tourney. Of course, I hear it was nothing compared to what you managed to rake in."

You scratch the behind of your head.
"Yea, to be honest most of that gold is already spent. I went and bought myself a ship and went to travel the Free Cities for a bit."
"So that's where you disappeared off to. I had been wondering why I hadn't seen or heard of you in any of the tourneys since Harrenhal.
Such a shame, I had expected you to make it to the Kingsguard eventually."
"Me? In the Kingsguard? That's a laugh."
"You were extraordinarily talented for your age. It was entirely within the realms of possibility. Speaking of which, how have your skills in swordsmanship developed?"
"Not much I must admit. Haven't really been practicing that much. Been specializing more on ranged weapons recently."
He sighs and hangs his head
"Is that so? What a waste... Tell me. What brings you to the Capital? Surely it's not just to see me again?"
"Well, I came to apply for the Royal Fleet."
"No kidding? Best of luck with that then. I hear prince Stannis isn't a very sociable sort though so it might be a hard sell."
You smile and pull out the leather tube which contains your admission to the Royal Fleet.

"Let's see... You got in? 50 GOLD? By the Seven! That's a fair bit of money. Congratulations!"
"Most of it goes to funding my crew and keeping my ship up and running. That's not to say I don't get a decent paycheck from it."
"Still, that's a lot more money than this place deals with."
"Speaking of... how's the business going?"
"Could be going better. Got a good dozen goldcloak regulars that I teach to ride and fight better as well as the occasional burghers."
"No bigshot nobles?"
"Had a few good squires until about a year ago. I've sort of fallen out of the whole high society circles. Turns out teaching the proper way to use your armor and shield isn't that exciting anymore. Now it's all about Greatswords apparently."

"You're not as jolly as I remember you."
"I've grown old. My best years are behind me now and I can't pull off a living on the Tourneys like I used to. All I've to fall back on are the skills I learned and this school here."
Psshh midlife crisis. Damn mortals
"You're not that old, you're what? 34 or something?"
"I wish. I'm 37 thanks for reminding me."
"Pish posh, same thing. You've still got your moustach and your blonde hair. You don't look much different to me."
"Bah! What do youngsters like you know of growing old."
Pls

You spend the morning chatting with him, telling him of the various sights you saw in Essos during your journeys and he tells you of the various squires he's had for the time you were away.

Apparently there was some sort of unofficial tradition in this school where every man he knighted having completed some contest of skill and the mementos reflected that.
Yours apparently displayed your impeccable defense.
The Broken Lance was from a lad who managed to break his lance on his foe with every pass, even in the one where he were unhorsed.
Some Swords and Shields were taken from defeated foes to signify a great victory in the Squire's life whilst others were tools used to achieve a great feat in a contest.

Come noon, Hector needed to start his work as his clients started to show up and he chased you away. What next?

> You know what would be great? Showing up at Stannis with the maps of Iron Isles before the war even starts. That'll freak him out.

Create a few compass for Stannis, Davos and potentially other members of the fleet; and maybe try to get to know Davos and the other captains serving Stannis more.
>>
>>2451943
This, though start small, maybe only Davos first, then mebby Mannis. Also, take a look at the smiths in the city. Anyone forge Valyrian? What would it cost to forge tool bits (for lathes, for example)? And take a look at alchemical components (mainly saltpeter and sulphur) and inquire about their production and origin. Who mines it and where.
>>

Nobody knows how to make Valyrian steel anymore.
Tobho Mott can reforge it, but he doesn't have any of his own to sell.

You know, we could give Hector a demonstration of the guns and shooting of our lads, and outsource some of the thinking of a tercio or gustavian infantry and how cavalry will have to adapt and what to use on the battlefield...

Or simply make him a few polish lances so he can be a total ham about having the longest lances and win tourneys again ....

>>
>>2451960
I realize, Im asking how much he wants for a specific reforge. Not a sword but a small cutting edge.

>>2451961
Yet there are people in Kings Landing who do, and with our connections in the Citadel its not impossible for us to get some Valyrian steel.
>>
So would a machine-gun with a Valyrian steel barrel be able to endlessly spurt out streams of bullets like machine-guns do in action films?
>>
>>2452071
planning on getting a Valyrian steel razor?

Probably not the best choice if Tyrion is to be believed

>>2452192
Valyrian steel is super hard but not brittle. I don't think either of these properties would help a barrel resist heat.

It is magic though, so who knows. They could have amazing thermal properties that we don't know ablout
>>
>>2452258
So what would be the best application for Valerian steel in modern weapons?

I'd say armor or a bayonet

A tank made of VS would be a good weapon, though obviously impractical

Valyrian steel has been used to make lamalar armor, so it would stnd to reason that we could have a breastplate or halfplate made of it. It would probably cost as much as the Twins, but it would probably be bulletproof and resistant to warhammers/maces.

Wagons to turn into wagon forts with swivel guns are probably the thing to have if you are moving as a army and are going to need a quick fortification.

Not a razor. Tool bits for lathes and other high-wear machinery. Goal being to start machining precision bits with a cutting edge that doesnt dull.

Also, wasting Valyrian on armor or swords is dumb. Better focus on industry so we can field enough musketmen to null any armor advantage.

Well, since Gendry was his apprentice and he's like what? 5 years old now? It's entirely likely that he's in King's Landing right now since apprenticeships tend to be arranged a good while beforehand and they probably wouldn't throw a bastard at some dude that just arrived.
>>
[1/5]

His fighting was exemplary at Harrenhal for someone of his age, but the fact that he also had achieved sufficient learning at the Citadel to have earned a Maester's chain showed him as a highly competent man.
Downside of him was that he was clearly ambitious, but at least he had the decency to be honest about that.

His bearing seemed decent enough. He hailed from a house of uplifted knights. Men of small account, but still known for producing knights of quality. You were no admirer of The Reachmen. The Siege had seen to that, but you couldn't fault them for staying loyal to their king.

The Man seemed to know Davos by name, but at least visibly bore him no ill will, which means he is either a man of decent character or a he is but another schemer. Still, you were resolved to make use of this man all the same.
The Spider's little birds have delivered their messages from the Iron Isles and it would seem that realm will bleed again. For that purpose, ships and captains are needed.

That, and the weapons he brought with him seemed impressive at the first glance very least. Whether or not his matchlocks prove themselves unreliable or not in the heat of battle remains to be seen, but a weapon that can so consistently punch through armor will no doubt be a boon against the Ironborn.
Besides, even if they fail to work, they ought to still double as a club or a makeshift spear.

"Come in Ser Davos."
"Lord Stannis."
"You were a smuggler. What's your opinion on the new ship in my fleet?"
He gives a troubled expression
"I'm not entirely sure my lord. I've never seen like it before. My gut as a sailor tells me that I can't outrun it unless I somehow sailed against the winds."
"And how do you believe it will handle in a fight?"
"I think the rumors that you should never engage the ship that sails under the twin headed aquila are warranted my lord. The Vessel was blistering with guns, each much larger than the Matchlocks he gave you."

Keeping the best for himself.

There was a knock on the door.

"My prince, Ser Arthur Tallon is here to see you. He claims that he's bringing yet another gift."
"Tell him to wait in front of the office. I will see him soon."

The Servant boy scurried off in a hurry to his errands at your word.

"What do you think his angle is? Is he trying to indebt me to him? Is he trying to fish some underhanded favor out of me like the rest of the sycophants in this damn city?"
"Could be, but you can always say no to him when he does ask for something."

You sigh
"Alright, send him in then."
>>
[2/5]

"Good day Prince Stannis, Ser Davos."
The man entered with a self satisfied look on his face as he entered wearing that outlandish apparel of his.

"Ser Arthur. I was told you wanted to see me."
"I did, I did, I most certainly did."
The Man was visibly in a good mood and looking at you with a look on his face as if he was hiding his enthusiasm.
"You see, I felt that 40 guns, while nice and all. Isn't necessarily that useful on the seas. It gets wet, keeping the matchcord dry is a hassle and all in all, I felt I could do better considering your profession and all."

He takes out two intricate wooden boxes.
"Here you go. One for Davos too since, you know, no hard feelings for botching up our siege. GG, Well played and all that."

You take the box and look at it a bit suspiciously.
Inside there was a strange brass contraption with some arcane looking etchings on it.
"What is it."
"It's a Compass. It knows where the North is regardless of the weather."

You turn it in your hands for a bit.
"How does it work?"
"The Needle in the middle always points towards the north regardless of which way you turn it. That way if there's fog or a lot of clouds blocking the stars you won't lose your bearing. The Background helps to illustrate the relative positions of east, south and west in turn."

Davos turns his around, clearly mesmerized by the contraption.
"Is it magic?" he asks
"Depends on your definition of Magic I suppose. I can assure you that there is a logic behind how it works and I didn't just handwave it into existence with a magic wand or trap a spirit inside it if that's what you think. It's just a piece of metal that points to the north for the time being."

You narrow your eyes
"For the time being?"
"Well, you can confuse the contraption with lodestone or big enough chunks of iron, so it's not foolproof. Properly cared for though, it can last for a thousand years. I did put a tin lining inside the box so you shouldn't really have issues if you keep it stored in a desk or something."

You rotate the object, examining it. Watching the craftsmanship on the strange object.
"Did you make this?"
"With my very own hands from start to finish."

Fine work. The Item had an certain exotic beauty to it.
You return the object back to it's container and turn to face this strange knight.
"What exactly is it that you seek to gain from me with these gifts?"
"To display to you that I can do things nobody else can? To show you I'm exceedingly useful? To show you that I'm resourceful enough to crack problems independently? I was taught that displaying one's merits are necessary in order to acquire a landed title."

"Loyalty in vassals is valued more than sheer resourcefulness Ser Arthur.
...but I shall graciously accept this gift. Mayhaps it will prove useful in the days to come."
"I am most certain that it will. Now I'm sure you're a busy man..."
"Off you go then. I shall remember your words Ser Arthur."

He bows at you and leaves the room.

"Brazen man"
"Aye Lord Stannis, but he seems both eager and competent."
"He hid with scholars during the war and refused the honor of becoming a Maester. That should tell you something of his character."
"To be fair Lord Stannis, most men would refuse oaths of celibacy regardless the honor promised."
"Did his trinket buy you off so easily Davos?"
"I'd rather lose the fingers from my other hand than my wife, I'll tell you that much."

After a moment of silence, you return back to work on writing commissions for ships and calls to arms in the event that the Spider's Ironborn invasion will happen.
Your brother at least is sold on thinking that it definitely will happen as is Lord Arryn, so you must do your duty as the King's Master of Ships.

289 AC, Second Month, King's Landing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faFuaYA-daw

Raven has just arrived from the Rock bearing the signet of House Lannister.
Westerlands call for aid.
Balon Greyjoy has rebelled and broken the King's peace in a dishonorable sneak attack, burning down the fleet stationed at Lannisport and sacking the town in vicious acts of savage rapine and butchery.

The Realm is once again at War.
The Northern Fleet, the Vale fleet and the King's Fleet all are being called to arms and gather to reinforce the Redwyne fleet as soon as possible.

Supplies are being hauled in great quantities to the docks and the levies are being assembled in great quantities.
The Whole thing happened very fast, as if they were preparing for this for a while now.

As part of the King's Fleet, your commander will be the Master of Ships himself. Right now he was however meeting with the King himself over the strategy.
Meeting which you managed to edge your way into when they asked if anyone in the fleet had any experience in sailing in the Iron Islands and naturally when you raised your hand, you got pulled into the small council meeting right then and there.

So, here you are. In front of some of the most important people in the nation.

Renly Baratheon, the Master of Laws
Stannis Baratheon, the Master of Ships
The King himself Robert Baratheon
The Hand of the King Lord Jon Arryn
The Master of Whisperers, Varys
The Grand Maester Pycelle
Lord Commander of the Kingsguard Ser Barristan Selmy
And the freshly minted Master of Coin Lord Petyr Baelish

"Your Grace."
You knelt in front of the small council
You hear the voice of Stannis
"Ser Arthur."
"My Prince."
>>
[5/5]

King Robert signals you to rise.
"Enough pleasantries, we're at War. Up you come lad. You know why you've been summoned?"
"Because you need someone to confirm whether or not the maps are still accurate?"
"Correct answer lad."
"If I may your grace."
You pull out a leather tube from your waist.

"What's this then?"
"An up to date strategic map of the Iron Islands, containing the locations of strategic resources such as lumber, food iron and timber, shipyards as well as tactically important locations of various shallows and safe anchorages in the primary holdings of the region."
Everyone in the room looks taken aback
"Hand it over lad."

You bring it and the King puts the map on the table and begins examining it with the other members of the Small Council.

Lord Varys asks
"If you don't mind me asking, where did a knight such as yourself you get this map? Can't imagine the Ironborn selling such a detailed map of their own lands to a Reachman."
"I saved money and made it all by meself. Prince Stannis should know I tend to make the most wonderful and useful things on my spare time."

Maester Pycelle speaks out
"I can vouch that Ser Arthur did spend some time in the Citadel learning about maps. He forged a link on the subject before moving on to work with my good friend Ruger, may he rest in peace."
"Ruger is dead?"
"Old Age I hear. He got a fever and then passed away."

The King raises his voice
"Focus people! We've a war to plan. Lad, if this map is accurate, then you've saved us a lot of lives, money, time and effort. I'll make sure you're well rewarded once we win the war."
"Thank you your grace."
"You're dismissed, return to your ship. We'll be sailing for Reach soon as the fleet is prepared and then crush this Rebellion with the full might of the Continent."

You bow and leave your lieges to plan their campaign, armed with the knowledge you handed out to them.

Sadly with the outbreak of the War, Grand Maester Pycelle ended being a very, very busy man and as such had no time at the moment to join you for a drink.

He sent a letter apologizing that needs of the realm must come first in such precarious time.
However, he did however of tell you of what happened to the Old man after he died. Apparently Archmaester Ruger's bones had been taken to be buried in his family grave located in Seagard should you wish to pay your respects.

He also stated that whilst most of his earthly possessions were inherited by the Citadel, he did also have a Will and you might wish to ask the Citadel about that.
There was no direct mention of the Printing Presses however.

Still, you held a brief memorial service with your men aboard the ship built by your old friend and tutor.
Expensive as it was, you bought enough Ruger's favorite Cheese and Wine to give each of your crewmen a taste of luxury as you all paid respects to the man who had constructed such a reliable vessel.

> Lost 5 Gold

You also got them some cheaper wine and cheese as well. It was alright to get drunk this day. Soon they'd be off to war and they'd be risking their lives safeguarding their loved ones and their country from Ironborn invaders and within but a few weeks, you did just that.

In less than a month the Arryn Fleet had arrived to join up with the Royal Fleet and the Stormlands fleet.
Tens of Thousands of men at arms assembled and with hundreds of ships in assembly, the order came to raise anchor and set sail to war.

https://youtu.be/5L2Gve7oh_4

The Northern fleet would have to play catch-up, providing reinforcements at their own time as their levies took time to mobilize.

Due to your speed and highly qualified crew, you were kept ahead of the fleet as a scout, reconnoitering the approach of the army and to raise a signal flags as needed should you spot anything in the horizon. This also meant that you'd be working directly under a certain individual who specialized in this sort of work. The Former smuggler, Davos Seaworth.

The Fleet headed straight for Arbor, not stopping for food or water on the way. Massive Carracks had been laden with supplies for the armies of the East and even though the fleet's approach was slow, the sheer number of vessels was staggering.
Linked up with armies of Reach and the Redwyne fleet, the Iron Islands would crumble fast and hard.

After reaching Arbor and linking up with the Redwyne and Oldtown fleet in a massive armada that easily numbered a thousand warships not counting the supply carracks and cogs which hauled food, water, engines of war and ammunition in great quantities, the fleet set sail to Fair Isle to ambush the Ironborn fleet.

Word had reached the fleet that Seagarde, unlike Lannisport had held strong and managed to throw the Iron Fleet back to the Sea in a great victory and that their fleet would be no match for your force.

The Fleet was stationed a bit further south in wait of a signal from tip of Fair Isle, prepared for an encirclement when the Iron fleet would make their way south and the King was giving a speech to the men in the main force on shore.

"I, King Robert of House Baratheon took up my Warhammer years ago to fight a war against tyranny and madness and in these straits of Fair Isle with you as my witness, I swear to do so again!"

"For what else could you call Balon Greyjoy, the detestable fool, if not a madman, when greed is such that he'd face an overwhelming force such as ours all but for the desire to reduce your friends and your families to work in his mines, to seek to turn your wives and your daughters into breeding sows for his army of rapers and pirates?"

"I fought against the most powerful dynasty in the history of Westeros to end the such arrogance and won! What hope can he possibly have when today, the whole might of Westeros stands united against such madness as one!"
"The Vale, Dorne, North, Riverlands, Stormlands, Westerlands, Reach and The Crown! All Standing together as the greatest army in the known world against a petty Island King with no great deeds to his name!

Such is his greed and arrogance, that there can be no doubt that he shall pass by here on his way to try and plunder Arbor and Oldtown and any septs on the way as they have did before hundreds of years ago!

Balon Greyjoy has lost against foes he had outnumbered at Seagard. It seems to me that he can only defeat his foes through a cowardly sneak attack and even so when his men sought to plunder Lannisport, they failed to take Casterly rock! Which is where most the Town's wealth was safeguarded."

"So I ask you how can then there be anything but total victory? They are outnumbered ten to one, our strategy and tactics both outclass them and we've seasoned warriors from the previous war on our side with our men are far better equipped than theirs!"

"Mark my words! Such will be their defeat in this Isle, that bards shall make such songs about it that they will cry in shame for generations!"

As he raises his hammer, there were thunderous cheers and an electricity in the air, an energy of purpose.
There was a sense of invincibility amongst the soldiers which had infected your crew as well. Overconfidence ran rampant amongst the rank and file. Everyone felt like they could be a war hero.

For the time being, Morale was sky high.

Davos taps you on the shoulder
"Ser Arthur, Lord Stannis summons you."

> That's it for the day
>>
>>2459902
another great update as usual
>>
So, question for Thrones-heads:
What was the Greyjoys' endgame here? Were they just trying to secede or did they genuinely think they could take over all of Westeros single-handedly?

Also; were their goals ever realistic?
>>
>>2461957
they thought Robert couldn't put is claim where his mouth was; and that the other lords of Westeros would rise up in rebellion, only problem is the prime candidates to do so fell in line and offered up their fleets to help Robert crush Greyjoy.
>>
>>2461957
He honestly thought that the other lords would also revolt if he gave them time to prepare and sparked the fuse. Maybe he was expecting a grassroots revolt since it doesn't make sense in regards to high lords.

Of course this was pretty idiotic overall.
Sure, riverlands has always been a place of internal conflict, but they all are united in their hate of the Ironborn. This is pretty much their culture due to their history.

Even if Reach was still Loyalist in parts, they'd always unite against Ironborn, because Ironborn have been lusting after their territories for long and there's a history of animosity against them.

The Dornish and their Rhoynar traditions are directly opposed of the Ironborn old way, so whatever loyalist elements exist in Martell faction of the Dorne would push for war against ironborn as well.

Funnily enough, if North and Vale were not staunch allies of Robert, they'd be more willing to put up with their shit.
In the North old ways linger, so there wouldn't be as much opposition towards the Ironborn clinging to theirs.
The Vale is sufficiently isolated and has to deal with their own barbarians on the regular and had many staunch loyalists during the rebellion. Most of whom are now dead, sworn to robert or stripped of titles.

Either way, this is a good example of a man marching off to war and making his plans afterwards.
That or he simply saw the Lannister fleet gathering and thought it time to strike before preparations were ready.
>>
>>2462739
Well, technically if they had sea superiority they could have pulled it off.

They banked on superior seamanship, and yeah that is the main thing until one gets into ironclads and such, but there is a limit to what it can carry.

Especially when they the redwyne fleet has fleet command experience in the war, so there is one navy in their weight class for experience, and then there is the royal fleet and all the lesser ones.

Probably why the lannister fleet had to be burned as the opening move , and why they tried something similar for the reach fleet.

If they managed both, then they would have had the chance to sink the royal one and put the war in a stalemate position until fleets get rebuilt.

If they refrained from raiding westeros they could have then signed a white peace.

Or if they did it during the rebellion then they could have also gotten away with it.

The thing is they missed the opportunity in bobby b rebelion, and now the opening that had to go perfect so they can use the shield islands against the royals and vassals and knock out lanister and reach fleets did not go perfectly, and now they are stuck with a shit situation.

You follow Ser Davos to Stannis' mighty War Galley Fury. It was a triple decked war galley with three hundred oars, bristling with Scorpion ready to launch their javelins and from the shape of her she likely came with a Ram in the prow as well.

Vessel built with the old ship doctrine of strong side defenses against boarding and with as much oars as possible to deliver as devastating strike as possible by ramming.

There was no doubt that this vessel could split yours in two if it could bring it's mighty ram to bear against your, but you very much doubted that it could. You reckon it'd end like the fight between David and Goliath.

"My lord Stannis. I've brought Ser Arthur as requested."
"Good."
He was watching towards the direction of the Faircastle, waiting for the sign that would no doubt arrive within the coming days.
"Are you aware of the battleplan my brother drafted?"
"Encircling manouver to break the whole iron fleet? I've heard it mentioned, yes."
"Good, then this will be quick. I want you and your ship to take part in the flanking force, but you are to hold back and not engage any of enemies until the rest of the fleet is in position. Is this understood?"
"Yes my lord."
"Once the fleet is in position, I want your ship to make as much noise as it possibly can. So much that we will hear it on the other side. Can you do this?"
"It shouldn't be a problem."
"Good. Whether or not you succeed or fail is of little importance, but this will be an important experiment to see whether or not your weapons can be used for signaling."
"I could specifically design a tool just for that task."
He turns around and looks at you.
"That is if my Lord would be interested in such a thing."
"We'll see about it after the battle. Right now I forbid the use of black powder until the Ironborn are encircled to avoid unnecessary noise that could alarm our foes."
"As you will it my Lord."
"Good. Return to your ship and await further orders."
You bow and obey

Smoke if by west, bells if by east.
The fools are sailing straight into the trap.

You stand at the prow of your vessel, addressing your crew.

"Men! The Bells you hear herald our coming victory!"
"Had they sailed westwards, they might have sought shelter by heading to the open sea, but in their fear of the high seas, fear which YOU have conquered, they chose a path which will trap them and lose them their fleet."
"We are to sail from the West to encircle them and give them a thorough buggering in their rears."
"So."
You clap your hands
"Get to it. We've a fleet to sink."

The Men smile as the head to their positions and eagerly load the cannons.
"Oh, and just so everyone is clear, you're not to fire until I give command. This order comes from the top, so you know you don't want to be the one to mess this one up. Understood? Good."

You draw your sabre
"Sail me closer. I want to hit them with my sword."

Darting your way around the Island you steered far around so as not to get caught in the battle and spotted the tail of the Greyjoy fleet as it just entered the point of no return. Soon after, hundreds of ships would begin filling the void between your craft and the Greyjoy fleet.

As the fleet began to plug their escape of the Iron Fleet, you entered the battle and fulfilled your orders amicably. "Let's do a strafing run their warships. Rake as many of them as we can with the cannons before they turn."
And so, the cannons began to sing their violent chorus, ripping hole after hole in flesh and timber, heralding the coming doom with thunderous pounding ever approaching, inching closer and closer like a storm they could not escape from.

The Long Night had come
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_FpYLnNhVw

You didn't waste time in trying to sink their ships. That's what the War Galleys were there for. Instead, you knew a far more efficient tactic. By the end of this battle, your vessel would no doubt have a kill count like no other and there'd be no question who has the mightiest vessel in the Seven Kingdoms.

You knew that the primary way for sinking ships was ramming in this world. Of course, such ships required the synchronized work of hundreds of rowers to guide the ship accurately to it's target. Such vessels would immediately become crippled when raked by cannonfire.

Even if they somehow managed to prevent their crew from panicking after ten balls of lead just rip through dozens of their friends in one go, reorganizing them would take more than enough time for your comrades to position themselves as they needed.

We had been caught in a trap.
They say the Storm God sets snares to lure ironborn to their destruction.

The Skies might be clear as day and not a drop of rain is falling from the skies, but our destruction is heralded by Thunder all the same and the Seas are not foaming in defiance as they would normally.
The Dread of Stepstones has appeared with hundreds of ships in his tail.
The rumored vessel which slew sailors by ripping their ships apart with bursts of thunder.

We are trapped, outnumbered and none can disagree the omens are bad.

"GET THE MEN BACK ON THE OARS! WE NEED TO MOVE OR WE'RE ALL DEAD LIKE THEM!"
You walked on the deck and took the Myrish lenses you had plundered off Lannisport and looked at the strange vessel coming towards your vessel and there you saw it's captain.

Young reachman with piercing blue eyes and fair brown hair, dressed on clothes decorated with skulls and birds of prey as if an envoy of the Storm God.
He was looking at your direction and pointing something towards you.

There was a flash of light followed by smoke and you retched forwards and fell down on your back.
As you felt your gut, you noticed your hand was red and coughed up blood.
The Lenses roll off the deck to the sea below as you sit in the red puddle of your own making with your insides spilling out.

Shortly afterwards the wood begins to creak as your ship collides to another, throwing you off the vessel into the cold sea. Your armor weighing you down, you sink like a stone until finally giving in, you inhale in the seawater and watch as the sun glistens through the water beautifully whilst the water muffles down the screams of men more and more as you drift down to the deeps, as if the carnage above had been all a lie.

It seems that the Drowned God has need of a lot of strong oarsmen this day.

The water is no longer so cold as it was a moment ago.
You close your eyes.

The Battle lasted for many, many hours, but the tactic worked wonderfully and a dozen Ironborn warships met their demise by your hand before their forces broke, many heading for shore and abandoning their ships or simply jumping overboard and trying to swim away.

You even managed to take down a few captains with your rifle as well whilst your swivel guns made short work of the would be boarders on longships and your cannons easily outranged the siege weapons aboard their dedicated warhsips. The encirclement was a complete success and their formation collapsed completely as they were bogged down by crippled ships that were being hunted down ruthlessly by the War Galleys of the Royal Fleet.
Chaos and confusion was rampant amongst your foemen.

Luckily you managed to manouver without being bogged down yourself by allied ships.
Many a vessel collided on eachother intentionally and unintentionally on each side of the conflict in the chaotic clash.
Indeed, it would seem that after noticing what you were doing, certain captains on the fleet seemed make sure to steer clear out of your way, giving you room to manouver.
They probably figured that you'd make their jobs a lot easier and waited for to go for your scraps to earn glory.

All in all, you got out of this one without so much a scratch and by the end of the day, the Iron Fleet was no more. Those who didn't make it to the shore or surrender in time, were now beneath the waves, which as far as you could from what you could tell was most of them.

Such was the nature of naval warfare of the Ironborn. When a ship goes down, more often than not, it takes most warriors aboard with it. Even if most Ironborn warriors trained to swim in armor, few ever did make it far enough to be picked up.

In the end though, with your ship's aid well over a thousand lives were claimed by the sea with the sunken vessels, you're fairly certain you bagged some nobility along the way.
Whilst you couldn't tell apart the faces from the distance, you knew that Captains sailing under Greyjoy banners at head of warships tended to be either hand picked for their skill or sons of vassals with no warships of their own.

Naturally you didn't shoot at any Harlaw ships as there were plenty of ships from asshole houses to choose from. The "Respectable" Ironborn houses which your father often spoke of, ones true to the Old Way even spite the dragons.

When you saw the Stonehouse, Sparr, Tawney and Weaver colours you decided that the world wouldn't miss them and gave them a generous serving of lead as you passed them. Whether they were merely Captains serving under them or actual relatives you didn't know, but their captains are with their beloved drowned god now.

... A marriage means wasted time from adventure and crafting. He has a heir to do that marriage thing.

But we don't really need it ATM. Not when the royal fleet and probably both the Man is and Bobby B will want us to make more sailships and boomsticks. With that we have as much money thrown at us as we want and with that we canskim enough to make our own version of the Indies Trading Company. At that point the only reason for marriage is to get a heir to the most lucrative business in westeros, and probably the only navy that can match the royal navy.

Margery and Sansa and few others are at that point the only worthy considerations, because if they do it for the navy, in case it switches over to combatant it will need a kingdom just to maintain it.

Then its even more of a schizo situation that most defeinately has us jumping parallel timlines, else when we get into anything that is the future post any jump we will see massive divergence, once we have done things that remain for a good while or alter the course, and then the points of reference would be kind of whack.

Still if we don't care about what we leave behind in this timeline beyond our initial disruption then that is no problem.

Plus if we want any heir we can just get a lysheni bedslave and use her as a broodmare with not entanglements if we don't want them.

But a highborn has money and allies in the form of her familly...
>>
Maybe we should suggest a change in leadership in the Iron Islands. Rodrick the Reader is a reasonable fellow and the Greyjoys are clearly a bit untrustworthy. Plus, he might be a bit more willing to agree to an updated fleet. And since we didn't attack any Harlaw ships, he might be in a strong enough position that no one could really contest his claim (in the Iron Islands, not suggesting he pick a fight with Bobby B)

...so who'll we be backing when shit hits the fan? It looks like we're ''courting'' Stannis at the moment but the Lannies have this unfortunate habit of extinguishing noble houses and granting titles to their toadies left and right, and the Mannis is kind of a cheapskate, honestly.
>>
>>2466139
You're not exactly in the position to do so.
Even if you vouched for him, are they going to really take your word for it? You're still ultimately but a landless knight.

You might KNOW the political situation in the Iron Islands, but how could you exactly convince him that it's a good move? You don't exactly have any credibility regarding the subject and besides, Quellon Greyjoy also seemed like he was amicable towards Greenlanders.
For all he knows, House Harlaw might follow suit the moment Rodrik kicks the bucket.

Keep in mind that much of the internal politics of the Iron Islanders is only known to themselves.
>>
Basically if you tried to tell a King how to do his job whilst so far below him in status with no actual authority on the subject matter, it'd be a pretty big Faux Pass and could be seen as an insult.
>>
>>2466220

We postpone the Stepstones until we have a base of operations, more than a couple ships and some weight behind our words. Until then, we need land with ample supplies for making ships and guns and gunpowder for the Crown (with interest, of course). To this end, the North seems decent, with an abundance of iron and other ores, so much timber we can make all the ships we want and enough privacy so our stuff is hard to steal/spy on for southern lords. At least somewhat.

Messing with the Iron Islands is pointless, since the populace will never accept us, its a den of thieves and generally leaves a bad taste in your mouth and as QM mentioned, we have no word in the matter anyway. Now, asking for some decent land up north with a Royal Stipend to set up ship production (and tinker on with our stuff) is a lot more likely to end up favourably for us. Especially considering our military exploits currently.

The only problem is that Bolton is on the east coast or well, near it. And while Manderly is the good place to go for it is going to be crownlands or stormlannds that the crown and baratheon bros will prefer, and the reach has our native and citadel connetions.

I mean, getting citadel apprentices working on the best ships around is something masters will be OK with especially with our reputation and connections, so we have already experienced workforce there. Not that the available resources and almost negligible transport costs for good wood are good, the lack of population and thus workforce may somewhat make resource costs the same...
>>
>>2467966
Since the King, Ned and the Hand will not stick us in the Reach, Dorne, Westerlands or the Islands, the only place with ample resources and a safe environment is the North. With Honor being a big thing, we can be sure nobody will bother us until the Boltons start getting uppity, that we can prepare for. As to getting workers, a new stipend from the Crown, a piece of the budget of the Navy and the favour of the Warden of the North, not to mention honest work will take care of getting people to us. Will it be a slow start? Yes Is it the safest and most resource rich option for us? Yes

Ultimately, the North has all we need and is secure. We can think about the Stepstones when we have a fleet of our own. As to the crownlands, we will be subjected to political dicking by the capital and both it and the Stormlands dont have enough resources for us to build freely and at a big profit margin. Ultimately, like most things in the North, we will be more free to act and have less worry of the Court ding things to us.

The Credit for the Victory was granted to the Master of ships Stannis Baratheon, whom had commanded the Fleet during this battle whilst the King himself stood back, measured the approach of the coming forces and eventually triggered the trap by his own hand, proceeding then to watch the ensuing carnage that would take place on the straits.

As he oversaw the battlefield from his tower with his lenses, there was one rather eyecatching ship in particular that very much stood out amongst the rest, a relatively small vessel that seemed to be a fair bit faster than any other craft in the fleet. Whilst it had great sails for it's size, it's hull was maybe a third at best of the standard warships of the iron fleet.

The Small ship's thunderous pounding could be heard all the way to the castle as it unleashed it's alien weaponry upon the hapless Iron fleet, ripping holes into the rears of the enemy vessels as it passed by them. The Damage it had done was clearly visible in the oars that went limp each time it fired it's salvo as it crippled one warship after another, softening up many for Stannis' War Galleys to ram before finally disengaging from battle.

"Whose colors are those?"
He points at the vessel flying a twin headed aquila from it's mast that's disengaging as the larger ships engage in a melee.
"I don't know your grace."
The King shakes his head at disapproval
"Well fetch Pycelle then. GO! Your king want to know whose ship it is!"
The Page rushes downstairs panickingly as the King raises the lenses once again to survey they battle.

"HAHAA! YES! Well struck Stannis!"
He watches from his lenses as the Fury manages to turn in on a mighty longship with Greyjoy colours that was closing in on a clear boarding manouver, but instead the Fury's ram bites into the belly of the craft, sending men flying as it suddenly starts to stop and fill with water as the vessel reverses.

The Boy returns with the Grand Maester in tow
"You summoned me my liege?"
He points towards the small craft flying under the Aquila
"Whose ship is that?"
The Old Maester borrows the
"I believe it's Ser Arthur Tallon's ship. The Long Night I think he calls it."
"That man with the maps and weird clothes?"
"Yes, I believe that is correct. He caused quite the stirr in the Citadel when his vessel first launched."
The King smiles
"I'd imagine. I bet the old farts pissed themselves in fear with that sort of racket."
He waves away the Maester
"I will talk to him personally when the battle is over. Send him word to make port when he drops his anchor."
"Yes your grace."

After a full day's worth of killing, you and your men were exhausted.
You must have shot at least 30 volleys during that fight and a fair few shots too from the swivel guns on the longships you came upon.

The Men were pretty tired by the end and glad to finally get out of the carnage.
From what you could tell, that's the only thing that was affecting them. The Men weren't particularily stressed out from the killing work oddly enough.

Perhaps they felt justified? Perhaps it was the smoke and the distance that shielded them from any would be psychological trauma? Perhaps they were just robust lads that expected this much. Either way, they were now officially war veterans.

Lieutenant Bodrin was addressing the men absolutely extatic of the performance.
"Outstanding work lads! Zero dead or wounded! Downright fantastic! You even fattened up the fish in the straits enough to make sure the fisheries in this region will have enough food to last through next the winter too!"

You smile and and agree with your second in command.
"I'll certainly drink to that."
As you were about to order the men to break out the victory wine from the hold, one of them speaks out.
"Ser! Skiff approaching us on starboard. It's the King's Herald."
"Lower the ladders lads. Let's see what he wants."
The Stout man on his fancy silken clothing climbs aboard the ship and looks at you and your odd clothing.
"Ser Arthur Tallon?"
"I am."
"You are given orders you to make port at once. The King wishes to speak with you."
"Allright then. Lieutenant Bodrin, ready the lads! Boatswain Dan, take us to port."
"Aye aye Captain."
Boatswain Dan starts yelling commands to the sailors.
"RAISE THE ANCHOR! LOWER THE SAILS! WE HEAD TO PORT!"
After your vessel starts moving, Lieutenant Bodrin starts screaming orders at the men.
"TUCK YOUR DAMN SHIRT IN! TRIM YOUR MOUSTACHE! FOR FUCKS SAKE TOM DO YOU WANT THE KING TO MISTAKE YOU FOR A DUNG FARMER? WASH YOUR FUCKING FACE!"

The Crew did their best to hastily clean themselves up and make themselves semi-presentable to receive the King.

Making port, the dock was swarming with retainers of the King, guards, servants and sycophants alike. Mind you, those three are not mutually exclusive terms.

The Faircastle port was not so expansive that it could host the whole of Redwyne fleet, let alone the Royal Navy's forces. Thus only ships that could make port at the time would have to do so with special permission, elsewise you'd need to drop anchor and row to the shore if you needed something from land.

You could roughly guess why your ship was invited to make port instead of you being simply being told to row to the shore. You had caught the curiosity of the King.

Once the ship's ropes had been fastened and the ramp was lowered, the herald, which took the liberty of remaining aboard your vessel for the return journey, pulled out his horn and began to play the royal fanfare, joined by three more heralds waiting by the docks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08T6Y7Sm_Eg

"His Majesty King Robert Baratheon, first of his name, King of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First men, Lord of Seven Kingdoms, Protector of the Realm and Lord Paramount of Stormlands."

The King walked through the docks past the sycophantic taggers along in his Wargear on his magnificently crafted full plate armor that seemed to fit him just right and with his Warhammer Hammer hanging from his belt.

Clearly he hadn't gotten too fat yet as he could still fit in the damn thing, though instead of his horned helmet, he was wearing his crown so you could see his face.
His hair was heavy, black and thick whilst his eyes were bright blue unlike the actor they got to play him in the TV show and he was tall, looking like a proper warrior king in his armor at least. Hell, he even made the kingsguard that accompanied him look like manlets.

As the fanfare began playing, everyone kneeled for their king, save his guards and he made his way to your ship.

He stood now in front of you as you were kneeling and flicked his fingers to signal you to raise up.
"Your grace."
"You made quite a lot of noise out there."
"My apologies your grace, I shall try to kill them more quietly next time."
His lips tense up as he snorts before bursting into laughter
"BWAHAHA! Gods that'd be rich, a King complaining that his battles are too loud!"
"Anyhow, I saw your ship in the field and how it made the Ironborn piss themselves and figured that I might have a job for you, but first, show me your trick. I want to see it first hand and close by."
"Very well my King, Gopher! A Powder charge to a swivel gun and some wax plugs for the king and his guards. NOW!"
"Ser! Yes Ser!"
The Apprentice sprinted down to the hold and returned posthaste with the requested goods.
"Right, your grace if you'd follow me..."

You slap on one of the swivel guns on the deck and begin the sales speech.
"The Way these things work is simple. The Black Powder, which I've got right here." You hold out the powder cartridge.
"This thing is rammed into this tube and once you ignite the powder, whatever you stuck into the tube afterwards is gonna come out really, REALLY fast."

Jaime looks at it with a smug dislike on his face.
"It's just like wildfire in another form then? Save you stick it in a tube?"
Your eyebrow twitches at the comment and you decide to show him that you're not like those hack alchemists that can't keep their explosives stable and throw the cartridge at his feet and it plops on the deck harmlessly.
"What?"
"If that was wildfire, we'd all be dead right now."
You pick up the cartridge again.

"This stuff is stable. Wildfire is not. Wildfire Lingers, this stuff does not. This kills by sending balls of metal flying at them. Wildfire kills by melting the skin off people."

You pick up a lead ball from one of the ammo boxes next to the swivel gun and load the weapon, plucking a hole into the cartridge through the ignition hole and pouring some extra powder into it from a horn.

"The Only difference between this and a trebuchet or a catapult is that this thing can be carried and operated by single man."

You bow to King Robert
"The weapon is ready to fire your Grace at your command."
"I shall try it personally."
"As you will your grace. Just point it at whatever you wish to make a fist sized hole into and ignite the powder."

He grabs the handle at the end and moves the gun around a bit.
"Well balanced for a lump of iron."
"Thank you your grace."

He takes the igniter, which was just a burning matchcord at the end of a stick and makes it touch the powder after aiming fairly high.

The Gun yanks back with a loud bang and a puff of smoke and after a second or so, there's a satisfying plunk in the distance whilst the King has a smile on his face.

"Bloody hell that's loud. It's decided then, you and your guns, you'll be coming with me to help take Pyke Ser Arthur, how do you like that? Fighting on your King's side?"
"I'm more than fine with that."

He shakes your hand
"Good man."

Well he is the fucking warlord of westeros not just the warrior, he'd know good product when he sees it and its performance.

Might even get this worked into a conversation post war, addressing him as such.

Kings are given power they are expected, the Warlord is the one who takes it and wields it no matter what anyone else might say. Thus we could argue we should call him our warlord. He'd get a kick out of that personal promotion from someone he likes, if we buddy him a bit. Might even get a quip in alone to see that he remains the warlord and not become some fat or shriweled king.

If he asks us more have it expanded to that our war leader being incapacitated to be a warleader and commander would be terribly embarrassing and a moralle hit to the troops, that we perhaps do or do not mention we are also included and all his vassals...

> Your guns once again make a contribution towards victory.

It had been approximately one month after the battle at Fair Isle.

Supplies were taken in abundance as were needed from the locals. Robert had commended you for marking Ironborn breweries and grazing islands on the map as well. Thanks to that, the army had no want for beer or goat meat.

Parts of the Royal navy were still busy placing the most important Ironborn sailing routes on lockdown, but overall the major houses in the Isles had all but capitulated, showing no signs of resistance.

The Initial plan had been to wait for Ned Stark and the Northern reinforcements before storming the beach, howevelr that plan had gone out of the window when Tywin Lannister had arrived with his levies. He pressured him for a few days to borrow some warships to assist him in the landing.

Can you guess whose ship was on that list?

You had been summoned once again to the King's tent, though not for drinking this time.
"Arthur! Come sit down, have a snifter and listen."
"I've some work for you and your crew. My father-in-law, the great and mighty Tywin Lannister has been bothering me nonstop about moving on to taking the Pyke. Now, I was going to wait until Ned arrived, but he's been rather insistent."
The King takes a fair three gulps of wine from his cup before continuing
"I figured that we need to secure the landing site anyhow, he however needs my warships to get this shit done, so I'm sending you in to help towards that end along with ten more ships. You're to make sure Lannister men get on land. Whatever happens after that is out of your hands."
"As you will it."

Watching banners of the Lannister transports, you could tell immediately why the King had said that it was out of your hands when they touched the ground.
Few men didn't know the Clegane banners by now.
It was evident that Tywin was out for revenge. Lordsport would burn this day.

Damn shame.
The Botleys didn't deserve this. Even if Lordsport was at times a haven for pirates, smugglers and cutthroats, Lord Sawane was one of the few ironborn that saw benefits of commerce and greenlander learning.

Still, knowing that moneygrubber, he's probably long since skipped town with his family and treasures. Being friends with smuggler cartels has its perks in times like this after all.
>>
[2/2]

https://youtu.be/2NnUve9xS10

Cannonballs ripped through the defenders without mercy, causing them to retreat further inland relatively quickly.
The Stronghold of the Botleys was an impressive construct of timber and wattle, overseeing the coming and going of the ships at the port.

Unfortunately your ship was a Natural enemy of such budget defenses.
The Siege weapons they had overlooking the docks up in the wooden ramparts were kept pinned down by your weapons as the Lannister men rushed to the docks under the cover of Robert's warships as you kept the enemy siege weapons silent.

The Landing had been largely uncontested save for the occasional arrowfire suffered from skirmishers a bit furher in the town and occasionally from a few archers in the stronghold itself.

However, the Mountain and his butchers did not much care thanks to their armor and proceeded to slaughter anyone in their path, nailing down locked buildings as they went.
What they were planning was quite obvious at this point.

In their wake they had a squad of men hauling a spitfire with them. A Small catapult designed to haul burning or boiling oil as well as the occasional wildfire flask at it's target.

As they made their way through the town towards the entrance of the fortress, you could hear panicked screams from inside of the stronghold. They were clearly rallying in on the other side to try and prevent what was coming.

From the smoke coming from the other side of the fort, you could tell this was a failure. Soon you'd see smoke rising all over the town as the Mountain proceeded to set the whole town on fire by torch and burning oil before returning to the ship with women they had taken from the town as his men were laughing wickedly with stolen booty.

As you watched this, you had half a mind to intervene.
To turn your ship's weapons on him and tell him to give his spoils to you or you'll kill them all.

The Question is whether or not you did so.

> Demand the Mountain relinquishes his spoils or you'll force his men back into the inferno they created?

>Hatred of Savagery activated

Your face turns into a scowl of utter contempt.
Fucking raping, pillaging, thieving savage scum. Every. Fucking. Lifetime. Why should I tolerate them? Unlearned Illiterate cunts, murdering whoresons, self satisfied marauders and a cancer upon society...
No, I'll not put up with this shit.

"Bodrin. Order the Marines to be ready at my command. Dan, order the men to fire the cannons at my command. This will not stand."
"But Ser..."
"DID I FUCKING STUTTER LIEUTENANT OR SHALL I SHOOT YOU FOR INSUBORDINATION!?"
"-No sir! I'll ready the men."

You stand tall and grab a cone.
"Gregor Clegane! This is Ser Arthur Tallon! Captain of the Long Night! I am hereby sequestering all the plunder and hostages you have collected on behalf of the Royal Fleet!"
There was laughter amongst the troops as the Mountain ignored your orders.

One of his lackeys stepped forth and shouts back at you
"Ser Arthur, we was just following Lord Tywins orders and by the King's Law, Ser Clegane as a knight has the right to collect as much plunder as he should wish! And to collect any such hostages he should wish for ransom."

"The Royal Fleet carried this military operation! Hand over your plunder and hostages to us!"
"Oh I see, the little knight wants his cut! Well then..."
He throws down the woman he was carrying on his shoulder and cuts her throat.
"How's that for your cut? She's still nice and warm too."

"Bodrin, my rifle."
He loads it and offers it to you.
"INSUBORDINATION IS PUNISHABLE BY DEATH!"
You take aim and with a crack of thunder and a puff of smoke, you put a hole straight through his breastplate, right into the heart and he puts his hand to his chest for a moment before falling down
"You... fucker..."

The Mountain throws down his booty booty sack, draws his massive greatsword along with his men whilst you stare him down.
"GUNS AT THE READY! MARINEEES PRESENT!"
At your command, the cannons popped from their hatches facing at the Mountain. Ser Cregor Clegane was right now staring at the barrels of 10 Cannons, 40 Muskets and 8 Swivel guns, all loaded and primed.

Neither side was making a move.
Many of Gregor's men were looking quite nervously behind them. He couldn't advance down the pier. He couldn't retreat into the burning town either. He still tries to stare you down, probably thinking thinking if there's a way he could get to you and kill you.

"RRRRAAAAAAAAAARGHHH!"
He throws his Greatsword at your ship and it sticks on the side of your vessel.

That goes into the book of grudges.
>>
[2/3]

He then proceeds to spit on his dropped plunder and walk into his ship whilst being stared down by your gunmen. Looks like Ser Gregor might be a raging psychopath, but he's not stupid enough to try and fight against you in this situation.

His men follow suit, throwing down whatever women or booty they had carried and spitting on them whilst leaving them behind, audibly declaring their discontent over this developement whilst showing you handsigns about cutting your throat.

Once they were all aboard, you gave order to one of the other warships to pick up the spoils as you kept your guns trained on the lumbering psychopath's vessel.

Whilst they collected the women and the plunder, Gregor returned from the bowels of his ship with a screaming, crying man, dragging him by his head.
"PLEASE NO! PLEASE! PLEASE! HAVE MERCY!"
The Mountain lifts the man above his head and breaks his back across his knee.
"AAARRGHHH!"
He then pulls out an axe, hacks the man's head off, raises it to his eye level as he looks at you.
He points the head and then he points at you from his ship before throwing the corpse overboard and mounting the head on a spike.

You elegantly extend your fist towards his diraction, rotate it 90 degrees and gracefully extend a middle-finger whilst making the most smuggest smile you could possibly make at him.
"U Mad bro?"
You doubt he could hear what you said as his ship was rowing off, no doubt to tattle on you for being such a dastardly rogue alchemist.

Still, kept your distance and guns trained to his vessel, ready to rip it apart if he did something stupid.

"Captain are you sure that was wise? He's Tywin Lannister's bannerman. You could get arrested, maybe even killed!"
"I'm certain it wasn't wise but I'd be an oathbreaker elsewise. If you've to blame anyone, then blame the gods for putting him in my path. Come, let us deliver our Captives and plunder to our Grand Admiral, Prince Stannis himself."

After hooking up with the rest of the fleet, you immediately made your way to Fury, Stannis' flagship and requested permission to come aboard, which was promptly granted and upon entering the craft, you were disarmed and brought to Stannis.
"Ser Arthur. I've heard reports from Lannister men that you've turned traitor and started shooting at our allies on your first command of a fleet and abused your authority to steal their plunder. What have you to say about that?"
You bow before Lord Stannis
"I'm only following the directives of the Royal Navy and my oaths as a Knight. As such, I've come to report to you of the plunder I've lawfully seized from Gregor Clegane and his men."
>>
[3/3]

"Lawfully? So you did seize it then?"
"Yes, I've recovered the women whom by my judgement must have been captured as slaves, since the Mountain's men torched anyone and everyone in the town who could pay ransom for them. Additionally as this was a Royal Fleet operation that I was in command of, I took the liberty to sequester our share of the plunder they collected as was only right."

He narrows his eyes and taps at his table with his fingers.
"Slavery is illegal in Westeros. That is a very serious accusation. Not baselessly made accusation, but a serious one nonetheless. And then? How much did you claim as your share?"
"100%"

He blinks while studying your face.
"I believe it was only fair my prince, seeing that all that Clegane's men did was chase some peasants around and throw torches. The Royal Fleet disabled the siege weaponry of the fortress, expending it's limited ammunition and secured the perimeter for the landing and departure of the ground forces."
"Is that so?"
"And furthermore they squandered the good work we did softening up a perfectly good fortified base by setting it on fire. It could have been fairly easily been taken with the forces they had. Few men were defending it and those that were, cowered before the thunder of guns."

He leans forward and crosses his fingers, locking eyes with you.
"And then the last question. Did you shoot at his men?"
You step forward and look him dead in the eye.
"I killed a man for insubordination. This much was correct."
"And what crime did this man do to deserve to be summarily executed?"
"Committing a murder of a woman without being ordered to. Presuming to talk to his superior as if I were his equal without leave to do so. Drawing a weapon after refusing the order to stand down."

He taps his fingers on his desk while looking at you, annoyed at this development
"I'll check the story with the other captains as well as with the men aboard their vessels. Until then, I am placing under arrest. You are my prisoner now. Men, lock him to the cage until further notice."

and so, you were taken into the bowels of Stannis' ship where you awaited as they conducted their investigation and you thought of what will happen.

In the worst case, should they try to pin this all on you and there's no justice to be had, there's still two possible options in the case of an emergency. Trial by Combat and of course, taking the black. Of course, you're a man of no small amount of prestige.

You've many a maester vouching for your character and your family does hold a fair bit more prestige than the Mountain does. You come from a long line of honorable knights with no scandal to your record whilst the Mountain is a known murderer of babes and women.

You at least hope the Master of ships holds you in high regard, but even if Stannis has doubts of you, the King does at least see your value. You did give him the map on the Isles. You've sunk many a ship for him. You hope that's enough to clear you of charges.

Bingo. We basically declared that we don't take shit from underlings, even if that underling does have Lannister backing. This will raise our stocks in the eyes of the Northmen (HONOUR), Stannis, and... the Martells.

Wait, we're Reachmen. They're supposed to hate us! Awkward.
>>
>>2470306
We could be a middle man between the crown/reach and the dornish in any substantual negotiation if we put our minds to it.
>>
>>2470306
meh, technically we'll be northeners soon, so I think the Martells will be cool with us specifically. Especially Oberyn, odds are we'll be his favorite foreign noble when he hears what we pulled.
>>
>>2470288
At any rate, we've certainly widdled in Gregor's Cheerios good & proper, and pooped in his soup for good measure. I don't think he's the 'forgive & forget' type, and I suppose the Lanisters will at least have to put on a front of being offended since he's one of their men.

Bored out of your mind you've spent couple of days in the brig, and you keep on banging your bucket to the floor in a steady tune.
"Hazumm zumm! zumm! zumm! Grudge and Vengeance! Wrath and Strife! We march into the afterlife!~"

"You make it sound like they're planning on putting you to death."
"Well I'll sing something else then shall I?
You turn around in your cell and see a familiar face of Ser Davos.
"Nice to see a friendly face Ser Davos. So, what's the news? Am I to be beheaded? Sent to the Wall? Fed to the sharks? Oh! Don't tell me, let me guess... Crucifixion! We haven't had one of those in a while."
"You've a morbid sense of humor Ser Arthur. Here."
He offers you a basket with a fair bit of jerky, bread, salt and wine.
You immediately grab a strip of meat and start munching.
"Just trying to make conversation here. Thanks for the grub by the way. I appreciate it."
"You're welcome there's some candles, quills, ink and parchment there as well."
"Fucking ace man."

As you go through the basket Ser Davos shuffles a bit in place, wondering how to broach the subject

"There's been talk about what's to be done with you."
You put down the basket and look at the knight with missing fingers.
"Go on."
"Lords Stannis has been defending your case fervently, even going so far as to demand the Mountain's arrest, but King Robert has thus far turned him down."
"Figures."
"The Issue has garnered a bit of attention amongst the men as well. Rumors of you standing up to the Mountain's atrocities have become popular gossip."
"Hah! Nice! That all then?"
"Not quite. Lord Eddard Stark and the King's Hand Jon Arryn have arrived recently as well and gotten involved in the case."
"Bit of a high profile argument over a plunder dispute isn't it? So, any idea what they have to say on the matter?"

He furrows his brow
"From what I heard from Stannis, Lord Eddard Stark stood behind your claim on this dispute. Stating that the Mountain was obviously in the wrong and that you acted with honor however..."
"I take it the Hand didn't agree then?"
"Not quite. Stannis was absolutely furious over the matter, but the hand wishes to sweep the problem under the rug.
Lord Stannis told me that the Hand's plan was that the plunder should be seized by the crown to discourage further disputes over looting rights and that neither side would be put on trial."
"and what's the King's take on this?"
"I hear he is favoring towards the Hand's advice in this. It was bit of a hassle, but still, it seems you saved those women."
You raise your wineskin towards him with a triumphant look on your face.

hmm...
There's one thing you could do to REALLY throw a wrench in their plans though.
You could demand a trial by combat.

> "Ser Davos, tell Lord Stannis that I request a week of recuperation from my imprisonment, preferably with an access to a forge and a trial by Combat."

What do we gain by killing him? Nothing really. More likely, we get the ire of the Lannisters, whereas now we have their grudging respect. Also, as >>2473152 mentioned, the fact that he doesnt demand one either speaks volumes. Also also, we basically won this encounter. Even if we get 0 loot we gained an assload of respect all over Westeros.

Hmmh. Can we get something that will get through double thicknesses plate?

Because bulletproof was the standard for plate once guns showed up, so that is not hard for current blacksmiths to pull of if they are good. And one can bet the one who made the double thick plate for the mountain was of some skill...

We would need some seriously overpowered gun since we can not risk it on a headshot, and that might risk exploding in our hand if we don't get it right and no chance for a retry.

Hmmhh.

> Some time ago at the Citadel

"Rest in peace Archmaester Ruger, you fat, pompous piece of shit."

You watched as the silent sisters carried the corpulent form of the bloated Maester from the Citadel.
The Old fart apparently had taken a nap in the library and not woken up from it. Good riddance.

Many Initiates and Acolytes were looking at the spectacle solemnly from the distance whilst the body was being moved.
It was not often you saw your tutors die.

"You think things will now return the way they used to Andres?"
"We shall see Simos. His faction is still around and they're likely to fight for their position on keeping on the presses as long as they have friends in the conclave."

The two of you turn around, walking the courtyard of the Citadel, enjoying the scent of the freshly grown herbs in the summer sun whilst walking towards the lunching area.

"Any idea who is actually going to be put in charge of the printers now that the Archmaester is dead?"
"There's a bit of a dispute on that matter I hear. You've some members on his faction arguing that they should go to his friend in the Conclave as per his will, but there's also those who oppose this, making a claim that the Printers belong to the next Archmaester of carpentry after him."
You roll your eyes
"With no shortage of candidates to take over the Archmaester's vile work no doubt?"
"Right, and if we go with that, we'll be likely to end up with a barely competent carpentry teacher."

You sigh
"What a damned mess. I trust there is no sign of finding that metal the knightling used either?"
"They have few leads and presume it might have come from Qarth but there's no way to verify. He doesn't leave a paper trail from his transactions, moves all over the place and his family and acquaintances seem oblivious to his doings, however... I don't see this feud lasting too long."

"How come?"
"We still outnumber both of the claimant factions put together. I foresee, no. I hope that the presses will be claimed by the Conclave and used only under their permission."
"Should just be rid of them. A Maester abandons his right to heirs or land with his oaths. It's only right that he should maintain some way of funding his studies without greedy inkbeaters stealing our hard earned money on a whim."

The Smell of freshly cooked soup wafted in the air with a spicy, yet creamy scent. The Freshly fatty seafood let out a telltale odor of warmth as the as the robed men gathered on lines with cups to receive their share of the oily broth.

"I know you've been on the receiving end of their bullying more than once. However, it's not the tools one should fault but the wielder.
Despite Ruger's misdeeds, the contraptions themselves have been greatly helpful to the convlave in keeping contact with the Maesters across the continent."
You shrug with grumble
"Hrm."

[1/2]

"Here's to another Victory over the Ironborn!"
"Here's to your son Lord Bryen and his baptism by fire! Were that my son showed half the steel he had his age."

Courier had brought word from the Redwyne fleet.
The Greyjoy's rebellion seemed to be one failure after another. He had failed to take the Rock. He had failed to take Seagarde and now his fleet had been sunk by the king's brother, Prince Stannis Baratheon.

"Thank you Lord Tarly, I'm sure your son will grow to fit his role with time."
"As do I. The Time to take him to his first hunt grows nigh and he still remains afraid of the sight of blood."
"Seems fairly normal to me my Liege. He is but 6 years of age and besides, that's what the first hunt is for isn't it? To toughen him up and correct such tendencies."

"True, true. But when I put YOUR son through it, he had no problems taking down a stag or five. Gods we feasted well after that day."
He takes a swig from his goblet
"Still, twenty Ironborn warships taken down with a single ship and being commended by the King for it no less!"
"Gods now there's a son to be proud of! Smart, Headstrong, fought like a demon even as a boy and with an aim with a bow that didn't fall short of my own archers..."

He puts a pice of venison into his mouth
"Your other son too, the day we fought at Ashford, I still remember that glorious victory. He might not be as sharp as your other one, but by the Gods he is strong like a bull and full of guts. The Very Image of the Warrior made flesh. Your bloodline is running strong, you even managed to produce twins."

"Thank you my liege. You honor me with your words."
"So. How have you been settling at Copperhall? Decent bit of land isn't it?"
"Very well, thank you for asking. There's far more room to breathe in there than at Knight's refuge. My wife has managed to lure a craftsman to open a weavery there and my son's friends from the Citadel have been showing up every now and then offering sage advice on making the soil more fertile to the end that even if the mines run dry, the smallfolk will have something to fall back on."

Lord Tarly smiles, clearly satisfied
"I'm glad to hear it. Very glad to hear it.
Lord Bryen, I've been good to you haven't I?
I've uplifted your house and kept the grubby hands of the Tyrells off from your family's fortune."
"There's no question about that. My house is forever indebted to you and yours for that."

Lord Tarly puts his right hand on the Old Knight's shoulder
"I'd have you repay that debt then. I want one of your children for my house. We'll link our families in marriage. What do you say?"

The Old Knight thinks for a while, clearly wanting to agree, but he knows his wife doesn't like these sort of sudden developments.
"I'd like that, but this isn't something planned in a day."
"So, am I to take that as a yes or no?"
He is clearly struggling with words. These sort of games were not his forte. He just came to celebrate the victory, not make marriage plans.
"It's a yes, but..."
"But?"
"We need to discuss the matter of a bethrothal further at a later date and I need to plan this with my family first and foremost. There's a bit of an age difference between your children and mine and..."
Lord Tarly gives the man a pat in the back
"Good. Good! We'll discuss of a suitable match at a later date then. Perhaps after we win this war, we'll have a meeting then?"
"As you will it my Lord."

"I think either of your elder sons is fine. The Youngest was going to be a Septon wasn't he? Oh, and if the gods give you another daughter, that'd work fine as well. Your daughter is a bit too old for my sons though."
"I... I'll see what I can do about it."

"Good man."

> Meanwhile at the hall of Justice Friends!

[1/2]

The King had summoned his brother over a dispute that happened between one of the Bannermen of Tywin Lannister and a Captain of Stannis' fleet.

Flanked by his hand, Jon Arryn and his good friend, Eddard Stark, he visibly unhappy.
"Stannis, one of your men killed one of my father-in-law's bannermen."

"He was outhbound to kill all of them as a Knight and as a Captain of the Royal Fleet. My fleet doesn't consort with slavers and rapers, it puts them to the sword."
Robert's began to raise his voice in annoyance
"Seven hells Stannis, soldiers rape in war. Get over it."
"This wasn't during the battle it was after it. I spoke to the Captains and to the Sailors! The Mountain and his men were stealing away women like Ironborn raiders!"
"It was Tywin's revenge for Lannisport, what of it?"
Stannis's face was twisting into a scowl of utter contempt as he spoke in an icy tone
"The Mountain broke his oaths as a knight. He insulted one of my Captains and theathened him when he stood up for himself. He kidnapped women as pleasure slaves. The Law is clear. He should be put to death for his crimes."

"Law? This is War! He was following orders of his liege lord to burn that town and Knights have right to claim plunder and hostages during battle."
"How can they be hostages when everyone capable of paying a ransom was butchered or burnt alive? It trust my Captains to know the difference between hostages and slaves."
King Robert slams his cup on the table
"Enough of this Stannis!"

Robert takes a deep breath before continuing
"Ned, what's your take on this?"
"The Mountain's reputation is well known even in the North. He is told to be a raper and a killer of children, the other one, this Ser Arthur Tallon on the other hand, he is well regarded by Maesters and by the soldiers alike, and his in actions standing up to the mountain kept you and your brother's honor clean from the wanton rapery and butchering the Lannister men would have likely visited upon such women.

If you punish this man for that, you will dishonor yourself."

"I've heard the rumors as well Ned, but what they don't tell you in those rumors is that every time someone's boy drowns in a well or cows go missing, the former Targaryen supporters blame the Mountain. How can I tell this lad isn't one of them? By the Seven hells, his family are hailed as heroes of Ashford!"
>>
[2/2]

Robert starts downing his wine.

"Jon, I made you my hand, now help me deal with this crap."

The Old man thinks for a moment.
"Punishing the Mountain would be a slight against the Lannisters, whom are one of your greatest supporters. I don't think I need to remind you of the generous loan we recently received from them, do we?"

"You can't possibly be telling Robert to side with the Mountain?"

"The Conflict, it was a dispute of rights to plunder originally no? This was the pretense under which this Ser Arthur bared his claws at the Lannister men was it not? Then what I suggest is that we treat the case as such.

The Crown shall seize the plunder and hostages due to the unsightly dispute over loot in order to discourage further infighting."

"You'd sweep it all under the rug? Turn a blind eye to the Mountain's crimes?"
"I'd take my chance to protect the womenfolk and the honor of the Crown Ser Arthur so graciously provided for us. Lord Tywin can keep using his mad dog and we avoid antagonizing the reachmen."

"...and besides. It's well known the Mountain has escaped justice many times by demanding a trial by combat every time things like this have happened. Should he kill another knight held in high regard, the Reachmen would not forget it soon."

Robert closes his eyes and mulls it over for a bit.
"Jon's solution seems best in terms of morale. Unless anyone comes with a better solution by tomorrow evening, we'll set the Tallon boy free and let them find an excuse to kill eachother after the war. Until then, I want them seperate."

He finishes his cup and slams it on the table
"Then let's move on to something more pure than petty politicking. WAR! Ned, did you bring the Ironwood for the Trebuchets that I requested?"
"As you commanded my King."
"Excellent! Excellent! Then about the placement for the thing."
He points at various location on the map.
"We should be able to make a foundation for them here and here if we take these locations. The Rubble at Lordsport ought to provide ample ammunition..."

>>
>>2473501
Stannis remains the best. I think while we made some enemies in the Lannisters, we're beginning to make some friends as well. It'll be an interesting lead up to the War of the Five Kings.
>>
We need to fuck up Gregor's shit at every opportunity.
>>
So if we had taken the trial by combat choice how would have we dealt with the mountain considering that there is 150% chance they would demand we don't use our guns?
There's pretty much no chance we would win against him by melee.
>>
>>2473622
They wouldn't. Pistols won't penetrate his plate and musket is a bit of a one shot gun that might also not penetrate and occupy both our arms leaving us without a blade to try and deflect his swings. Plus the fuck off thick shield.

Without some dynamite or something of the sort we are not killing him with a device we have thus far made.

Because while they won't cry foul to pistols and muskets, swivel guns and cannons are right out.
One thing to have personal arms, another to walz in mounting the equivalent of a scorpion aiming it at where the mountain willender and declaring that we are ready.

Do remember that we are just above average and we have not honed our personal combat skills as we have admired to Hector. In mean yes, we could have tried to do the pistol and sabre and aim for joints, but for that shit we would have needed to have honed such a combat style in furious boarding actions fighting multiple opponents at once to get on the level of the mountain, and not get mulched.

In a trial by combat the range is so low that even with modern weapons the mountain has a good chance of mulching people to a mutual kill and survive long enough to be declared the victor even if he dies later from the wounds.

So take that in to account. Dynamite, or a gun and blade combat style we have reached not proficiency but mastery is needed.

People like The Mountain, Arthur Dayne, Baristwn Selmy, Bobby B, in their prime might as well be just a wee bit above human levels of performance...
>>
>>2474397
Fear not, our near dwarven levels of craftsmanship will pull us out of the fire.
All we need to do is make the stupidest weapon known to man, pic related.
Ideally we mount a defensive long enough to get a good shot at the mountain, clear of his shield obviously.
The worst part about this plan is the part about actually getting open, but provided we can get a good shot in on him he should be damaged enough to where we can just hack him to death with our now empty pistol-sabre
>>
>>2474397
If a pistol is not good enough, get a bigger pistol. A bullet will rip through him like tissue paper. Add 3 more guns to our person and we win. Could even just run circles while he bleeds to death, which, considering center mass, is not long at all.

"It seems you're free man once more Ser Arthur. Our King has decided to chastise this little plunder dispute of yours by seizing all that was taken in the battle of Lordsport for the crown."

You look at the jailor with a very smug look on your face as you stand up.
"Does that include Ser Gregor's dignity as well?"

He looks at you shaking his head as he begins unlocking the door.
"You've a death wish or something? If the mountain had demanded a trial by combat, you'd be mulched like the rest of em."
You stretch yourself a bit as you walk out of the cell and begin strutting towards natural light.
"One wonders why he didn't then, no? Oh well, see you the next time I get into trouble."

Upon reaching the ever nauseating radiance of natural light, your eyes took a while to adjust to the filthy normiespace of the sky-seeing scum that didn't live in comfy little shipdungeon in the dark.
You bet most of these people didn't even shit in a bucket. Reeee!

Anyhow, as you reached the Deck, you were greeted by the sight of sunrise as well as Stannis Baratheon who is watching to the shore of Lordsport whilst a few of your men were loitering around.

You were near Lordsport. A lot more ships were looming around this time too.

"Our King has ordered the construction of a fortified base camp higher up the hill and the construction of Great Trebuchets at key positions held by Balon's men. Ned Stark has been given the honor to lead this assault."
"We are to support the Ned Stark's men in taking and holding of these points until the engineers complete their tasks."

Stretching and blinking, you try your best to redjust your body to society.
"All right then. When do we move in?"
"At some point at noon. They will sound the horns and then we'll move out."
"Guess I should get to my ship then."
"Yes. You should."

You climb with your crew to the skiff and they begin to row you back to your vessel to wait for the sign.

Nah senpai, we have it pretty much roughed out to maximize autonomy, resources and good location. West of White Harbour. Literally endless wood, plentyful iron and a location for further expansion with little risk of political teabagging and warbands ravaging. The only problem remains funding. Though the Crown/Navy will probably help with that and we will sell distilleries, guns, compasses and mebby printing tech/books, we still need ideas how to draw in more money, since building up our fief will take anassload of cash.

Seems that the North's heavy infantry backed up by black powder weaponry was a force that the wooden palisades of Ironmen couldn't withstand. The Number of casualties was few indeed, well on your side at least.

Stannis decided to take your marines under his personal command and combined them with his own matchlock troops to form a Firelock unit whilst you kept command of your of swivel guns, raining light artillery fire at their wooden fortifications, ripping defenders apart whilst the Northern heavy infantry scaled the hill carrying their hook ladders.

Their morale was already wavering when the your swivel mounted pruneflingers started ripping through their ramparts, but after Stannis ordered a couple fo volleys, they really seemed reluctant to want to pop their heads above the ramparts save for the few cheeky arrows which were nowhere near enough to deter the horde of roaring, heavily armored northern infantry.

Every time they tried to reorganize their defense, Stannis ordered a volley on them which seemed toe be enough to convince them to keep their heads down as your guns kept battering their towers with constantly pounding with ripple fire so that the foes paying attention on the ramparts could see the splinters of wood flying with every shot.
It also kept their archers there nice and quiet, so that was good too.

Unable to withstand the combined assault, they retreated to the bridge and into the first stone gatehouse. They clearly knew they could neither withstand the bombardment nor the violent charge of the northmen in their current position.
As they did fled, your comrades from the Royal fleet began to swiftly roll up some scorpions and pavises on the now abandoned clearing to help secure the position.

After the battle, you were approached by Stannis Baratheon with the usual stern look on his face.

"Ser Arthur."
"Prince Stannis."
"You want to tell me why the guns you have are easier to use than mine, fire faster, hit harder and don't consume any matchcord?"
You shrug
"Best things in life aren't free my prince. Besides, the Matchlocks should be easily enough repaired by your own smiths if they get damaged. They're made sturdy on purpose."
He glances at you sternly for a moment and then turns towards the sea.
"Our King has decided that after your misconduct, it'd be improper for you to have the honor to escort him to battle personally. Instead you'll be returning under my command. We'll be moving on to taking the Great Wyk whilst my brother takes his time cracking the fortresses of Pyke."
"We will commence the invasion on the morning. You've until then to ready yourself and your men."
"It'll be done."
"Good."

He walks off to his ship, leaving you to your duties.
>>
[2/2]

Strolling to your gathering marines to inform the men that they need to pack up, you saw Lord Eddard Stark taking a look at your equipment, taking a look at one of your muskets.

"Lord Stark."
"Judging from the rather distinct clothing, I presume you're Ser Arthur?"
"I am. To what do I owe the pleasure?"
"I've never seen weapons quite like these Ser Arthur. Are they handiwork of the Citadel?"
"Afraid not Lord Stark, they're my own personal handiwork. The Weapons and the ship are both designed by yours truly and most bear my hammermarks as well."
"You must be quite a craftsman then."
"During those three years you lot were out fighting against the Targaryens, I spent it in the Citadel forging links. Earned nine links on smithing, six on numbers, two on alchemy as well as architecture, one for carpentry and one on warfare."
You pull out the elaborate chain from your coat's inner pocket that you're now using to hold your keys on.

He looks at you as if you were an unicorn
"I heard from my Maester that once a student gains enough links to hang a chain around his neck, he becomes a Maester himself."
"Most of the times this is the case, yes. The Chain symbolizes my right to join their order, not an obligation of it. Besides, even if my father did approve, I've no talent in healing or ravenry anyhow."
"A Knightly house I take it?"
"Uplifted, but the martial traditions still linger."

At that moment, you noticed something gravely offensive in the corner of your eye.
"Oi! What the fock are you doing!"
"S-Ser! We're setting up the Trebuchet as the King ordered."
You grab the piece of timber he was working
"Not with this piece of timber you ain't. This Cheaper the stuff is for stopping arrows, not for building war machines. If you're not sure what to do, go ask the siegemaster before you do it! It's his job to guide your work."
"Yes Ser! I'm sorry Ser!"
"Good, go make him earn his pay."
He scurries off immediately
"You know your way around siege engines."
"Spent some years building a ship with an Archmaester after the war. You learn a thing or two about lumber in that kind of work. As a Matter of fact, Ruger even wrote a book on the subject 'Thesis on Varieties and Qualities of Lumber' believe it was called."
"I think I've seen Maester Luwin have a copy of that tome somewhere in his office."
You smile at that. Looks like the Old Man's legacy managed to worm it's way as far as the North.

"I heard what you did with the Mountain. Too few men have the courage to stand by their oaths a when it really matters."
"A Knight ought to at least be ready to look petty for his oaths when so demanded."
He chuckles

"You know, Ser Arthur, if the North is good enough for you, I'd be interested in inviting you into my service once the war is over. We've a community of Reachmen settled at White Harbor, so you wouldn't be too much out of place thereabouts. I could arrange you a fief to settle down in."

In Great Wyk, there were four houses with formidable fortifications on the Island.

Merlyns of Pebbleton Tower were by far the weakest in terms of military strength. They, unlike most Ironborn, saw the value of trade over war.
Farwynds of Sealskin point were a hermit house. It's likely much of their household had been evacuated to the Lonely Light.
The Clear powers on this Island were the Goodbrothers. Break them and the rest will fall in line.

Still, when it came to War the Ironborn had a culture of sticking together until the conflict and then they went right back to hating eachother again. The Possibility of them sending skirmishers, if only for appearances sake could not be discounted.

However, after consulting you, Stannis had formed a plan.

Castle Hammerhorn was discerned to be the most troublesome target in the Isles to take over in an assault. Too difficult to reach and too heavily fortified. Quite deep inland as well. Annoying part was that the Goodbrothers made their fortunes on Iron. They'd have no lack for equipment up there.

The Objective was instead of a full on assault was thus:
Take the minor holdings of House Goodbrother. Corpse Lake, Downdelving and Crow's spike keep. Seize hostages and demand surrender of Goodbrothers. This meant your guns were largely unsuitable for the main assaults, as they don't tend to leave people alive, so you were instead ordered to stay in reserve in case of cavalry and skirmishers.

From what you could tell from your past experiences, Lord Gorold was a shrew of a man. Ironborn lord of an ancient and prestigious line, a rare breed of Ironborn who kept around a Maester, saw the value of learning, but still favored war and flirted with the old way as long as it were convenient.
You imagined that if given a way out of this war that didn't make him seem like a traitor, he'd likely take it.

So, you once again went to War.
Stannis decided to start on with taking Downdelving simply because he discerned from your maps it was difficult to reinforce without a naval superiority. It was easily defended from an invasion coming from the direction of Hammerhorn and as such a good location to start.

As for the actual battle, Stannis had decided to once again liberate you of the command of your troops, leaving you behind on your vessel to watch the shores with cannons as you heard the occasional popping in the distance.
For your part, there wasn't much to do during the battle itself and only after the battle did you receive permission come ashore.

You walked to meet your commander in the now taken keep as the men were carrying away the dead and the wounded.
"Congratulations on your victory Prince Stannis. Seems you've taken a liking on Blackpowder weapons."
"Ser Arthur. Your men performed their duty commendably as we completed our objective. We captured some of Lord Gorold's Goodbrother's cousins."
"I'm glad to hear it. I think you ought to know, I was approached by Lord Eddard Stark the other day. He offered me a Landed title for my service."
"I see. Quite an honor, I take it you agreed."
"Of course."
He nods
"Lord Stark is a good liege. I had been considering to give you a similar reward for your service once the war had reached it conclusion, but I suppose I'll need to think of something else then."

There's a moment of silence in which neither of you say anything.
"Once the war is over, I'd like to buy your ship with it's weaponry and offer your crew the choice to continue their work under my service."
"That is... provided you'll be selling the Black Powder on your lands."

At least 10k given that it is the fastest ship in the Seven Kingdoms as well as the most destructive. I think Stannis will be more understanding when we also tell him that we need sizeable funds to secure our new holding in the North - a security that is necessary for a regular production of his favourite black powder.

He wouldn't want some random nobles to be able to loot the stores of explosives now, would he?

Also ask if he would be interested in investing a shipyard that would produce ships like that for him.

Fact is we were going to probably make ourselves a fort designed to counter and take advantage of cannons so we're gonna probably replace the existing stuff. The low population and lawlessness could be a problem if we want to recruit many troops or perform large projects but we can bring in outsiders and enforce our rule when we need to. That low wealth could be a nuisance though.
>>
>>2483810
Minerals, crop rotation, printing press+industrial tech will probably negate that low wealth

>>
>>2483789
We'll likely want to import some people.

>>2483810
We'll need to alter strategy most likely. Depending on if we're close to White Harbor like Eddard said, it might not be impossible to lure men into our service form either there or back home.

Wildlings are likely on the menu again, so we'll need to train a core of fighters in dealing with ambushes and insurgency, something more like Roger's Rangers than gunline infantry and marines.

Would be cool if we can have ships being made and mining operations, but hard to say if we'll have the people. Certainly have the dosh though, so maybe use that for back at the tp point.
>>
Gents, if you recall, our little gunship effectively gutted 20 Ironborn wargalleys. Since I am pretty sure no other ship can go 20/0 K/D and the average war galley goes for over 10000 G we can use this as an argument why the 10k is suitable. As a sweetner we can say we are willing to sell him more compasses at a discount price. Probably want to give him a pistol as a gift too, to further sweeten the deal and relations going forward.

As to land, quickly selling distilleries and gold panning equipment (magnetic pans and so forth to help stimulate local wealth growth from gold panning, since that is a thing in the north, also having them buy stuff with said gold so we can skim off it). Also selling compasses and some guns to select clients would help us set up quite a few customers for our gunpowder, further helping to fund our stuff.

Also, the automatic loom i a great idea, even if we have to horse-power it until we get steam.
>>
>>2484127
Surely setting up distilleries & flogging booze would be better than selling the distilleries?
>>
Well we have guns and trained marines, it’s not like we can’t use them to help with our lawlessness problems.

>>
>>2484326
Selling booze is fine but the market is limited. Selling the promise of booze is something many will jump at. Also, its not as if we will run out of drunkards to buy the booze, its that we sell the distilleries at a marked increase to other lords whos peasants would come to buy from us anyway. We will trade in booze at our port but we will gain loads-a-cash by selling the things to others, which is what we need.
>>
>>2485332
Would NOT come to us*

Basically, we will never really sell much booze in the Reach but a local lord being able to turn his plentiful food into an abundance of firewine and rubbing alcohol? Well sell them like hotcakes. Same everywhere else.
>>
>>2485369
That doesn’t really seems like a sustainable way of income, that is just asking for someone to eventually copy the distillery or having the price eventually go down as the market is utterly flooded with the booze.
>>
>>2485376
Really, since we need a lot of money in the short run this is a good plan of action. Besides, like in the real world, booze is not something people get tired of and we can always out-produce everyone and make whiskey and other fancier drinks before everyone else to stay relevant amidst the other distilleries. Also, QM confirmed this to be more profitable. IIRC hundreds of gold profit per distillery, since the equipment is rare and hoarded, meaning we can make a LOT of money for our other projects. Besides, getting steam engines means booze production is smallfry compared to automated looms and powered workshops. Also the gunpowder trade. All of which takes a lot of starting capital.
>>
>>2484127
Where are you getting the 10k price from?
Also, I think the 20 must have either been an exaggeration or it's counting in longships that were gunned down.

Didn't we cripple like 10 or so warships in the battle, which got sunk by actual war galleys? We didn't actually take down a single warship on our own.
>>
What happened to the stepstones plan?
>>
>>2465747

>>2485393
My mistake, a dozen plus longboats. The point is, although we didnt kill any, we basically took them out of the action since it was a mop-up operation for Mannis ships. In a battle, our gunship essentially crippled a flank, sowed mass chaos and wasnt even scratched. If you factor in the ease at which the other warship could sink the crippled Ironborn vessles, our speed and by now the quite grand reputation, 10k seems ok to me. Besides, we will sweeten the deal with compasses and favourable trade deals. Also, putting a high price on our ship sets a precedence and the price of our next ships.

If we really cant get 6k, go for 8k. The point is, get the price high so we can sell the next ships expensive as well. Alternatively, we can sell it to him cheaper if we get fiscal support from the navy down the line.

>>2485397
We need a fleet and assloads of cash for that. We build up in the Norf and when we have enough ships and loyal men we sweep in and clean up. Currently we would get killed easily, despite our fabulous ship.

It is a horrible plan of action. After our initial profit we would see nothing. Let’s just set up our own distillery which will give us a sustainable source of income. People will not line up at the promise of alcohol, and if we make spirits much stronger and much more cheaply than we could literally get a monopoly on the market for them. I also don’t know if the maesters are aware of the antiseptic properties of alcohol, but we should make them aware of it and we would be the sole source of alcohol strong enough to use as antiseptic for them. We could also exportl the spirits to Essos and Braavos as well.

we could sell this one and try to use that money on building something larger, like a carrack?
>>
>>2485484
I am happy either way. We are making a good profit on it, and while no other ship like it will have the degree of expert worker and decoration in it they will be just as functional.

Because citadel students are not just in it to deliver a product but to showcase and practice their skills thus the engravings everywhere.

Plus stanis is not stupid and knows we will want to make more guns and powder, but again that is a single point of failure for the weaponry outside of stockpiles of powder.

Ad considering that lords in westeros are notorious about being disdainful of merchant like behaviour I dunno if pushing for more is worth it the reputation hit we might get with him, considering he is likely to be our main customer as head of the royal navy.

But on the other hand the extra 4k gold is tempting.

God fucking damn it now we're going to have to build a bigger, harder, badder ship.

You guys know this is Stannis Baratheon right? He's a conniving fuck and we jist fucking HANDED HIM THE PLANS TO build more of these right? It's the Mideval ages yeah but they can still figure out ship design. Have fun against an entire fleets worth of competent fast as fuck ships my dudes. Better build our next one out of fucking Ironwood and steel.

The Citadel already knows how to make it.
Also, those ships are worthless in a fight without cannons since they can only do he running away part decently.
Also, the Crown is up to its tits in debt, so large scale military investments aren't likely.

Also, they are really expensive for their weight class and are demanding for their crew to sail.

You think a moment. You'll have your own lands soon enough and for that, you'll need Capital. Preferably rapidly. Without a war going on, how much are you going to really make with the ship?
Yes. Prince buying ship you designed, using blackpowder weapons.
That should help give more acceptance the Blackpowder weapons and as well. Bad-mouthing you for using them is bad-mouthing the Royal family.

"I won't settle for less than 6000 Gold Dragons on the vessel."
"Could buy four or five good, full sized warships with that much coin. Not cheap ship for sure."
"Which do you reckon would win? Five peasants with clubs or a chariot armed with a crossbow? You get what you pay for. I assure you."
"Fair enough I suppose. Provided your ship survives the war, I'll buy it off you for such a price."
"Oh, and about the crew, I am planning on coaxing a few officers to come with me to the North."
"Do those men at least have successors trained?"
"Oh yes, you needn't worry about that. All personnel with specialized tasks were to train a successor from the crew in case one of them gets sick or dies, that was part of their guild protocol when I hired them."
"Is it a deal then?"
"It's a deal."

You shake on it.

Good. That should secure you a fair bit of capital for whatever investments you plan to make in the future in order to jump start the economy of your holdings out of this medieval fuck.

Oh, how a little War can work wonders!

"Just so you know, this is a seperate deal altogether. You've contributed much to this war effort and I'll see you rewarded for your deeds when the time comes. For your counsel, your maps, your weapons and your success in battle I've not forgotten about those contributions even if you'll be leaving my service soon enough."

"You're a man of integrity Prince Stannis. You'll always be welcome at my home, wherever that may end up being."

> Meanwhile at Copperhall
Resting after an evening of lovemaking, you and your still beautiful wife rest on the bed in the afterglow, holding eachother.
"It seems you were most eager serve your liege lord back there."
"A Knight has a duty to wield lance in defense of the realm."
You slap your wife on the bum
"You Scoundrel!"

You smile and then relax your neck on the pillow, watching the ceiling.
"I know that look. Why the low spirits? Our fortunes are on the rise."
"That's just it. I wonder long these good times will last."
"Hopefully for generations to come. Bob will marry Talla Tarly once she comes of age and she will give him many sons. Copperhall will yield fortunes like we didn't see at Knight's refuge and we'll be related to one of the most prestigious houses in Westeros soon. Bobbert is now helping to whip the Tarly boy into shape... Everything is fine."
"If we can ascend so quickly, then quickly might we fall as well. Lord Randyll might change his mind, these lands are unknown to us, what if we run them to ruin? What if..."
"Shush dearest. Just leave the worrying to me. We're doing just fine, our good fortune isn't spent just yet."

There was a knock on the door.
"I believe I said I was not to be disturbed Rickar!"
"A Rider has arrived father! He brings tidings from the war!"
You rise up and start getting dressed
"You'd desert your wife for a piece of parchment?"
You grab your pillow and throw it at her face
"Keep talking like that and you'll be limping to breakfast."

You stand up and open the door and take the leather tube from your youngest son's hands.
"Thank you. Now go get some sleep."

After closing the door, you took some light for a candle and went to your desk to read. There was nothing but silence for a few moments.
"Well? What does it say?"
"Read it yourself. I'm not sure if I read it correctly."
Your wife rises from under the covers, still naked, pressing her breasts on your back as she reads the news.
"...let's see Victory at Lordsport... The Mountain backed down?! A LANDED TITLE!? 6000 DRAGONS?!? THE FAVOR OF PRINCE STANNIS?!?!"
"It seems the Gods love that boy well."
"Obsessed over him more like. Good grief!"
"How do you think the nobles will react?"
"Good heavens! When they hear about this, we'll hear no end about questions when he is coming back."

> Back at your ship

The Campaign had been progressing well enough, however... There's not been a whole lot for you to do. Ever since you agreed to sell the ship to Stannis, well, he's mostly been keeping you and your guys in reserve.

Sure, he'd ask to roll out the cannons and guns out every now and then for threats and the like, but overall he's been keeping you and your ship very much in the rear guard and away from any harm. You've not had much opportunities to distinguish yourself after that either in Corpse Lake or Crow Spike Keep.

You're not entirely sure what to make of it.
Anyhow, the Goodbrothers have now capitulated as expected with the condition that the prisoners will be released after the War without a ransom whilst a single child of the main family is to be kept as a ward in the greenlands.

The Sparrs made a small show of defiance which was ruthlessly crushed by Stannis. He had no interest in letting them keep their dignity so he from the looks of it grape shotted them.

Ser Barristan is still busy pacifying at the Old Wyk and from the looks of it, he is also finishing it up as well, but he is using more traditional methods. Last you heard from Robert was that they had taken one of the keeps at Pyke and begun bombarding the next.

The War is neatly reaching towards it's conclusion, however, there's still the matter of your officers. You could Knight a few of them that showed prowess in battle and invite them to join you in your court.

> Knight Lieutenant Bodrin for the command of Marines during the battle of Lordsport and Downdelving
> Knight Boatswain Dan for his performance of the cannons at the Fair Isle

I wonder if Stannis is going to pick up our command structure?
>>
>>2487935
Maybe for gunships, not that revolutionary, since we have so few men and the structure is literally 1 dude leading 40.
>>
>>2487940

Apparently a clear chain of command is already an improvement in Westeros :P as the master of ships I thought he might adopt it, it seems like the kind of thing that would be right up his alleys.
>>
>>2487742
> Why not both?
>>
>>2487958
Maybe for large formations where many lords have troops in a single army, but for one ship it is inconsequential. Not like it is anything new. Whether they start to adopt a hierarchy after we make some ground troops and train up the officers, that remains to be seen.

Is Bobbert training Samwell? If so, we may have just doomed the realm.
>>
>>2487737

Also I'm still sad we are not going into Stannis' service. At least we know Ned is going to support Stannis initially.
>>
>>2488278
Then make a couple of 6 shooter revolvers for Ned so he can go wild wild west on the lannisters littlefinger and goldcloaks when they inevitably betray him. Even if he doesn’t survive a couple of revolvers would give him a good chance of killing Jaime Joffrey Baelish and whoever that goldcloak leader is.
>>
>>2488301
Hand grenades, that’s what we need to make him :)
>>
>>2488301
Before we can make revolvers we still need percussion caps which we still don't have. Once we get our little Fortress of Solitude oop north we urgently need to spend some time in our alchemy lab trying to crack the secrets of mercury fulminate.
>>
>>2488314
Even better, let Ned Stark Allah Akbar them all right when they think they got him.
>>
>>2488676
>"What manner of armor is this?" Ned asked incredulously, as the strangely dressed bannerman wrapped him in.

>"A special one," the powder knight said curtly.

>With one last squeeze, the man that had invented a number of miracles finally completed the next. A sort of girdle filled with a fine powder was now tightly snugged against Lord Stark's midsection and the Warden of the North seemed mystified by it's use.

>"It's simple," Ser Arthur continued, "Plate is too bulky to be worn underneath your plainclothes. Mail will stop a blade, but a heavy blow will smash bone just the same. The powder will absorb the impact and spare your boy the first."

>Ned nodded his head, seemingly to loosely understand the concept.

>"Like a fist pounding a pile of dirt?" he hazarded.

>"Precisely," the Maester-Knight smiled, "And there's more."

>Ned raised an eyebrow.

>"More?"

>"Should you ever be in deathly danger," Ser Tallon began, "And I stress: The absolute end must be upon you. Should you ever be surrounded and wounded, simply pull this string."

>Arthur touched lightly the cord as he spoke at Ned's size, pointing it out directly.

>"What will happen when I pull it?" Ned questioned.

>The Powder Knight smiled.
>>
>>2488278
>>2488301
My suggestion is that we assist Ned during his coup. We don't TELL him about the coup, because Ned with his honour and shit will probably derail the sequence of events, but we should seed our troops in the throne room and once the betrayal of the goldcloaks occur, we make them bullet depositories.

Then we smugly enter the room after having saved the day, take Cersei into custody, secure Ned, and send a raven for Stannis to come in with the military to secure his claim to the throne.
>>
>>2488760
The outcome - we show Stannis that we did not forget his cordial treatment of us during our time in the Royal Navy (especially his advocacy for us), and the Lord Paramount of the North owes a life debt to us. Not just any Lord Paramount - The Ned, famous for being honourable and just and all that.

We also secured Stannis' position as the rightful King - no, EMPEROR of the Seven Kingdoms. I imagine the reward will be... significant. Dare I even suggest the Lannister seat on the Rock after we exterminate that usurper-house?
>>
>>2488783
Getting a large force into the Red Keep isn't an easy task, even more difficult in the midst of a coup. The reason Ned went forward ith the goldcloaks was because there's so many of them and them being in the keep isn't that odd.

Reminder that he was only able to bring a handful of his own men to start with.
>>
>>2488842
Honestly why try and prevent it when we can let it unfold as normal, profit during the war, and help Dany out so we get a sweet ass dragon with a howitzer strapped to its back?
>>
>>2489002
Targ all along seems a strong play. Even better if we can get Jon Snow to like us too.
