New Haven had a werewolf problem, but it looks to finally be solved. A man Henry would call a hero is about to be hanged. Vive, a woman many would call a monster, lies dead in a lumbermill. Her group has been killed to a man in the raid that the local Cathars and the two inquisitors our ‘hero’ has met carried out. Henry has finally set things right with Charles, and has seemingly started to open up, desiring a change in himself. Right now he heads to get some much needed healing at the local healer’s abbey. After that, we have a hanging to attend.

Quest rules:
1. All dice rolled are assumed to be D100 unless otherwise stated
2. In most situations, only the first two dice rolls will be counted, if the threads become more popular this may be changed. This choice ultimately falls to the Lorekeeper, odd circumstances may cause him to overlook this rule (a ton of crits later down the chain for instance)
3. All dice rolls are final
4. Critical fails are considered to be between 1-5, Critical hits are between 95-100. Crits overpower any other roll except another crit. In the rare chance that a crit fail and crit success happen. The Lorekeeper will do something interesting from a story angle.
5. Near misses may occur, where a rolled number is close to the required threshold, whether over or under. This can have an impact on how the story proceeds. However these are up to the decision of the Lorekeeper.
6. Sometimes there are optional choices one may participate in, these will generally NOT be taken unless there are multiple posters who wish it, assuming there are multiple posters in the thread
7. There are often times choices with multiple parts, each part is counted separately, unless otherwise stated, sometimes rolls will be required before counting the second, third, etc, part
8. There will be “Time Limited” decisions, in which characters may only do a set number of actions, or ask a set number of questions within a conversation, or during combat. These will sometimes be clearly marked, and sometimes not if it adds to the story. If there are three choices allowed, for instance, each poster is expected to pick three choices in descending order. The first choice of the first poster, the first choice of the second, and the first choice of the third poster will be taken. If two first choices match, the second choice will be chosen of the following poster, etc. If there are fewer posters than choices allowed, the first poster will be given preference, and his second choice will be picked (so the first poster, second poster, and then first poster again), etc.
9. Interviews: Interviews will generally be a freeform set of questions that the readers have to ask the person they are interviewing. No hand holding here, I will purposefully leave up wrong answers or decisions, although for the most part careful readers will be able to tease these out. (Like saying you’re still a scribe even though that little story has been completely thrown out the window)
10. Rules may be subject to change between threads, but will not change during the same thread. These rules are what we will follow for the remainder of this thread.

“It ain’t your fault Charles, me and him just get upset at each other sometimes.” Henry said to the kid.

“Like an old married couple.” Johnny added.

“I’m heading out to get a healer for my leg Johnny.” Henry told the skeleton. “I’ll be back in an hour or so, and then I guess we’ll be done with this case?”

“Seems so.” Johnny replied.

“So I guess I’m just waiting here like usual?” Charles asked. A bit upset.

“Come on kid.” Henry said. “You’ve been cooped up longer than is healthy.”

The walk to the healers abbey, and the holy grounds, was a bit more ingrained in Henry’s memory than he would’ve preferred.

Optional Decisions (otherwise we’ll go right to the abbey)

2. Do something else on the way (write in)

Henry walked out of the inn and around the corner, with Charles in tow. He entered a pub and sat down at a table. He decided on stew, he needed the energy to be completely honest.

“Want anything Charles?” Henry asked.

“Maybe some chicken or something.” He said, before looking down

Charles had had a rough week. He’d lost the only people he’d cared about, he’d barely escaped the capital, and he was probably being hunted. The man he was with was a NECROMANCER WITH A TALKING SKELETON, HE’D NEARLY BEEN KILLED BY A WEREWOLF JUST A NIGHT BEFORE. He was acting like this was NORMAL. But even with all the craziness, and his violent outbursts, he was still a kind person. He’d dropped everything to help him, but he didn’t really know all that much about Henry.

Maybe he should ask?

Decision by Charles:
1. “Where did you grow up?”
2. “So did you always have your… current profession?”
3. “What’s the deal with your … uh… bodyguard?”
4. “Have you ever been to Yorkshire?”
5. “Do you get scared sometimes?”
6. “Why do you get so angry?”
7. “Can you teach me magic?”
8. Write in

“Have you ever been to Yorkshire?” Charles asked, sitting up in his chair a bit.

“Actually I have a few times for eh… business. So I’m a bit familiar with the city. I’ve generally used roads to get there since it’s a good deal faster than this little route.”

“Business?” Charles asked. “You mean like before?”

“I have to put food on the table somehow kid, nothing in life is free.” Henry replied, beginning to eat his food. Charles began to do the same, he tried to remember to enjoy it.

“So … I don’t know if it’s right for me to be asking this, but where did you grow up?”

Henry grew quiet for a moment, then closed his eyes as if remembering something.

“I grew up on the coast, Renaili Province, born to a family of fishermen… it was a nice life… while it lasted…” Henry grew quiet after that.

“I didn’t mean to bring up anything bad.” Charles said.

Henry just sulked and ate his food for a bit. Eventually he looked at Charles again and said “Its fine, just, don’t ask too many questions about my past… I don’t like talking about it normally.”

“I… I understand a bit.” Charles replied.

The meal lasted a bit longer and the two began to head out for the healers abbey.

“Does the wound hurt?” Charles asked. “It looks really painful.”
“I’ve had way worse, and not just last night.” Henry replied. “I seem to always be getting myself hurt.”

“I… that isn’t an answer I don’t think?”

“It’s sore as all hell, but it’s not as bad as it was earlier, I managed to clean the thing out pretty well.”

As the two rounded the corner and began to walk up the stone stairs to the holy grounds Charles asked one last question.

“Can you teach me to do magic like you can Henry… I don’t want to be so defenseless anymore.”

“I… I mean I suppose I could, I don’t see what use it’d be to a kid like you though.”

“I don’t want to be so useless anymore, and since you’ve been so kind to me even though I’ve been a burden.”

“You know for a kid with your background you are really humble.” Henry finally said. “Alright, fine, if you have aptitude and the patience for it I suppose I could.”

“I don’t need to be special or anything?” Charles asked, a bit surprised.

“Most people have the capability for it actually. But very few are willing to put the time in to learn it, heck most people are too worried about surviving day to day to worry about more intellectual pursuits.”

“You really like magic don’t you?” Charles asked.

“What?”
“You started talking with far more complicated words than you normally do.”

“Don’t push it kid.” Henry shot back. Charles was worried till he saw that Henry was cracking a grin. “We can maybe spend some time training over the next day or so, lord knows I need to brush up and practice.”

Finally, they were at the gate.

“Hey there… uh… guys?” Henry asked, he’d never ACTUALLY gotten their names, although he honestly didn’t care enough to ask now.

“HELLO SIR!” The one on the left yelled out, the man appeared to be a bit tired, but otherwise happy. “I AM HAPPY YOU ARE … okay.”

“But of course, a man handpicked by Inquisitors would be able to handle a few measly werewolves with no difficulty!”

“How’ve you been?” Henry asked. “Crazy around town ey?”

“Well… we shouldn’t be saying this… but I heard Cathar Jonathon died bravely last night defending the town from intrusion, he kept some people out of the ghost quarter. I hope you weren’t too close to him.”

“No…” Henry trailed off, a bit taken aback.

“I am just happy the town is safe and sound! To think we had a blindspot like that! I’m sure Hafford will do his damndest to fix things right up!”

“NOT HAVING THE RIGHT CHAIN OF COMMAND DIDN’T HELP EITHER. WE WENT FROM A NOBLE TO A CRUSADER AND TWO TEMPLARS. MADE THINGS DIFFICULT!”

“Right…” Henry replied.

“WE’VE BEEN JUST FINE, THANK YOU FOR ASKING, NOT ALLOWED ON THE RAID FOR SOME REASON. UNBELIEVEABLE. THEY HAVE NO RESPECT FOR ME!”

“Don’t say such things! Especially not around our esteemed guest!”
“How did the raid even go?” Henry asked.

“Without a hitch! Of course it was planned by Hafford, so it was never a worry! We wiped them out to a man!”

“YOU MEAN THEY DID.”

“Of course!”

Henry nodded to the two of them and then proceeded inside.

“So Charles, don’t you miss being with other kids or what not, or people who aren’t me or Johnny?”

“I was… even if my parents disdained me they couldn’t just throw me out, and I wasn’t allowed to mingle with… common folk.” Charles said the last part as a whisper, probably smart since they were inside the Holy Grounds now.

“So you didn’t have any friends besides your brother?” Henry asked.

“Beyond him? I made friends with a few of the servants, like Peter… although most never wanted to be near me… I don’t know why exactly….” The child trailed off.

Henry didn’t know what he was on about with that, but he decided to not press the boy. If he wanted to talk about it he would.

Henry made his way over to Grom, waving at him as he did so. He finally noticed a small bag filled with coins in the man’s right hand.

“Back already?” Henry asked.

“It didn’t take long to secure the lumber mill, not with all the local help we received. I’m surprised you’re only now going to get healing though.”

“Yeah yeah, I had to tell my apprentice here that I was still among the living.”

“H-hi.” Charles said, ducking behind Henry. Grom looked at the child for a moment before returning to Henry.

“I’ve received payment for the job, so after the hanging later today, our inquisitorial business here will be concluded.”

“Right right.” Henry said. “I don’t suppose I’ll be getting a cut.”

“Of course, but I don’t think now is the best time to discuss that matter.” Grom replied.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Inside the abbey, Henry finally took a seat at a wooden chair in the lobby. His leg had been killing him and he needed a bit of rest. Apparently the healers were still tending to a couple of the Cathars and he would be lower priority. Such was life.

“Why would members of the church need to be paid?” Charles asked, the child had found a seat nearby and was drumming his fingers across his leg.

“Nothing is free, certainty not church services, and CERTAINTLY not inquisitorial services. Those guys are highly trained and have to be called in. None of that comes free.”

“It just doesn’t seem very holy.” Charles responded.

“They have a bit of a reputation.” Henry replied. “Regardless I think we’ll be alright around them, they don’t know about you, and wouldn’t know what you look like, since you said it yourself that you were couped up all the time.”

“I suppose.” Charles replied.

“So I know you want to learn magic Charles, but what exactly do you want to learn? I mean… I don’t think you want to learn… you know. Beyond that I never really took too much time to learn much else. I don’t know how much help I’d be.”

“I don’t really have anyone else I could ask.” Charles responded. “I would like to learn some offensive magic I think… I honestly didn’t think you’d say yes, so I didn’t think I’d uh, actually have to pick spells to learn.”

“I.. I guess I can teach you the basics, mana flow, channeling, and maybe we could even figure out what colors of mana you have access to.” Henry said.

“How does any of that work?” Charles asked.

Henry began to reply but was cut off when Rosa entered the room.

“Oh… oh no...” She whispered. She looked genuinely terrified of Henry.

Decision:
1. “I don’t bite… much”
2. “Look I’m sorry about earlier. I was just a bit paranoid at the time.”

“Afternoon, Sister Rosa.” Henry said, trying to play things normally.

“I… um.” Rosa replied. “H-how can I help you?”

Henry quickly motioned to his leg. The thing was bandaged but didn’t look fantastic. He wondered how she could have missed it.

“I-I… yes I can take a look at it.” Rosa replied, before walking over, crouching down, and removing Henry’s bandages.

“Oh, this is terrible, you must be in a lot of pain.” Rosa said. “How did you even get this?”

“It’s not that bad. I got it when a bomb rune went off.”

“What?”

“It’s a long story, but it had to do with the investigation.” Henry replied.

Rosa continued to check on the wound before beginning to cast a spell. Henry slowly felt the pain fade away as the flesh in his leg stitched itself back together. Charles watched in awe, Henry wondered if he could actually see the spell being cast. Some people had more talent for magic than others after all.

After it was done, Rosa removed the rest of the bandages and stood back up.

“W-will there be anything else?” She asked, “I… I wanted to apologize t-to you about yesterday… I… please don’t um…” She said, still a bit nervous.

“Look, I’m sorry about earlier, I was just VERY paranoid at the time, specially after I’d been so badly injured. I didn’t know who I could trust, and you snooping on me and Charles here was uncalled for. Look, considering what me and the Inquisitors had to deal with… I hope you do not hold it against me.”

“I, fine, I’m sorry.” Rosa said after some time. “It’s a horrible habit of mine… I just get curious about things, I’ve always been curious. I’m just happy were on good enough terms before our journey”

Decision:
1. Do not say anything (will make you exit)

Ah. Well, just sit in the corner and watch them, then, in case she gets too close for comfort in her questions to Charles.
>>
>>2481858
“Our Journey?” Henry asked, panicking a bit internally, this would complicate things even further.

“Why yes, I’m going to be journeying with you and the Inquisitors towards Yorkshire, I would have gone earlier but the road was too dangerous.”

Henry had mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, they would have a healer in their group, which would probably be needed if he got into any more battles.

“Oh, your arm.” Rosa said, placing a hand on her mouth. The wolf bite looked far worse than the leg had but it was far less serious, or felt less so, anyways.

Rosa began to heal it as well. Henry didn’t feel too much of a different on that one.

“My apprentice here, wants to learn some magic, I was wondering if you could teach him a few things. Perhaps during the journey. I’d like to teach him myself but I really do not know where to start.” Henry said.

“I… I’m not sure… I’d need to think about it.” Rosa said.

“Don’t you need to be here in the abbey? Why are you traveling?” Charles asked.

“I’m a monk, so I don’t have an abbey to call home, I move from place to place to lend aid.” Rosa said.

Right, a Monk, that would explain why she didn’t seem to fit in well with the others.

“Thanks Rosa, hopefully we won’t need your help again.” Henry said. It was only when he saw her wince that he realized how it had sounded.

“No I mean I hope I don’t get beat to shit again.” Henry tried to correct himself.

“You should probably just leave.” Rosa said, quickly walking away and heading deeper into the building.

Good lord she was thin skinned.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The walk back was short and uneventful. Upon reaching their inn room Henry fell back onto the bed. Good lord was he tired.

“Happy you’re in tip top shape.” Johnny said. The skeleton’s get up was completely repaired now. It hadn’t really been too damaged in the first place, but Johnny always kept his equipment in good order. He’d even fixed up parts than had just started to wear out from use.

“All we have left to do is wait.” Henry said. rolling around on his bed so he was facing the ceiling.

“For the hanging?” Charles asked.

“Hey, kid, what did you see when Rosa cast her healing spell.” Henry asked, desperately trying to change the subject.

“I… I saw a bunch of white light around her hand, and then your wound started to close up and heal itself. It was amazing.”

Henry sat up a bit. Someone without training should have been unable to so much as see a glimmer of the magic. This kid, it sounded like he’d seen the whole thing. Royal blood must have been some truly special stuff.

“I think you’ll be a natural then.” Henry said. Laying back down on the bed. “Do you know the time, Johnny?”

“About two in the afternoon now, based on the sun.” Johnny said, craning his head out the room’s window. “So a few more hours.”

“Fantastic.” Henry said. “I’m going to get some sleep, wake me up before would you?”

“I don’t think you’d be able to live with yourself otherwise.” Johnny replied. “I will make certain we have enough time.”

The way they were treating this, like an event to go watch, made Henry a little sick. He usually had a strong stomach, he’d seen a lot of awful things, but this… it felt truly wicked.

“Charles, I want you to stay here during the hanging, you’ve already seen plenty for someone your age.” Henry said.

“I’m a bit surprised sir, I would have figured you would have taken him along to prove a point.” Johnny replied.

“I’m not nearly that heartless Johnny.” Henry replied.

“I would argue otherwise, but no matter.” Johnny responded.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Several hours later, Johnny shook Henry awake, and the two departed to the central plaza. The plaza itself was abuzz with activity already. Even though the hanging wouldn’t be for another half hour. The city’s tree of redemption was roped off, forming an empty island. The front side being fairly swarmed with people. The tree’s leaves were a magnificent red hue, its branches shades of gray. The Holy See claimed it had the power to redeem any soul hung from it, even vampires. Henry didn’t really believe it, but people hung from it never turned into Ghiests. Hanging from its branches, Henry recognized the man he had interrogated the prior day, flies had begun to swarm his body, and plant matter had begun to grow out of him as well. He knew better than to try praying for the man’s soul. He didn’t believe in any of that anymore.

The closed off area was being patrolled by several Cathars, who occasionally had to shove at the crowd to keep them from rushing inside of the cordon. Henry saw Cassius and Grom there as well. Grom had a somber expression. The man had a job to do. Cassius looked utterly pleased with himself, his job well done already. Templar Rodger was also there, having a one sided conversation with a man who had a leather sack over his head, a man in ill-fitting Cathar robes, Jonathon. The only other person that Henry recognized was Crusader Hafford, who was standing off to one side, looking towards some of the buildings, as if still waiting for an attack. Henry couldn’t really see the man’s face.
>>
>>2484272

As Henry began to push into the crowd he could already hear a few of them calling for the traitor’s blood. None of them called Jonathon by name. Nobody must’ve known exactly who he was. The church must’ve not told anyone. Perhaps the Cathar’s would eventually figure it out, but it obviously was to try and protect the kid’s family from being attacked by angry townsfolk. Henry hoped it would work.

Eventually a bit more time passed, and Bishop Marcus entered into the enclosed section, and after a time the crowd quieted down. Marcus began to read something, a religious sermon from the book of Journeys if Henry remembered right.

“And so we come here today, to see a disgraced Cathar’s journey come to an end. He vowed to protect the town, but failed his duties…”

Henry stopped listening after that, the spectacle was a bit too much for him. The crowd writhed in anticipation, Henry could feel the collective soul of the town, right here right now. A human sacrifice, to ease their collective fears.

“You know this needed to be done, Henry.” Johnny said, placing a hand on Henry’s shoulder. Henry rebuked him, shaking his hand off.

“This is a human sacrifice Johnny, just like before.” Henry replied, disgusted with the skeleton.

A little while longer, and the ‘festivities’ started. Bishop Marcus and Crusader Hafford led Jonathon up onto the hangman’s platform under the tree. The thing had been recently made, probably due to all of the recent attacks. The platform had to be moved slightly after each hanging so it was a fairly lightweight construction. A series of crossbeams and planks, a wooden platform with a trap door in the middle, ringed with railings and a small set of wood stairs off to one side.

Hafford himself placed the noose around Jonathon’s neck then tightened it, making sure it would hold. The drop would ensure a quick death. Some would argue that such a thing was merciful. Hafford slowly descended the platform as a new person, someone Henry didn’t recognize, ascended it. Probably the executioner, they generally lived outside of towns since they were seen as impure due to their profession. Henry didn’t see it that way necessarily. Lot of his supply was from them. When it came to criminals, the church didn’t care much what happened to the bodies after they died. Well, until they started walking again anyways.

Henry craned his neck, he needed to see this. A few moments later, the executioner walked over to a lever, yanked it, and Jonathon dropped. The fall was quick, the stop was sudden, and Jonathon hung limp. The cracking noise was all the confirmation Henry needed to know that the man was gone. A relatively peaceful death, all things considered. Henry watched in the background as Rodger finally ran off, holding a single hand to his face, the man was probably in a bad state after all of this. Hafford was seemingly wiping a few tears off his own face. Marcus was clenching his jaw, but otherwise was unmoved. The townfolk let out a cheer. Their troubles were over, the city was safe.

Henry felt nothing, he wanted to feel worse than he did, but couldn’t muster it.

Henry began walking back towards the inn, he thought he heard Johnny try to speak to him, but he was in no mood to listen. Damn that old bag of bones, damn him and his misguided sense of honor. He hated the townsfolk for cheering on this Jonathon’s death. How dare they… but he couldn’t stay angry for long at these people. They were just as scared and helpless as Jonathon had been, easily guided by promises as lies, by threats and intimidation. Kind of funny in a way, he hated himself for thinking about controlling others, manipulation, and the like.

Henry quickly left the central plaza, he was drained, exhausted, and just wanted to sleep. The trip back to the inn was a blurr, he didn’t even remember if Johnny had followed him. When he got into his room Charles began to speak something to him. Henry didn’t really understand the words, all he heard were mumbles. A few moments later he was on the bed, asleep. He just wanted to sleep.

His dreams were fitful. An altar, some children, and finally that person, laughing, laughing without a care in the world. It was always the same dream, always the same place. But the faces of the children, they were always different. The face of that person, that demon, was always the same, burned into his memory, and he always hated himself.

GAIN ONE BAR OF MANA!

CHOOSE MANA TYPE

RED (CURRENTLY 3)

BLACK (CURRENTLY 5)

BLUE (CURRENTLY 2)

====================================================

CURRENT SPELLS (may be tweaked if they are over or under powered)

Bolt: A fairly basic bolt of lightning energy that can fry most living creatures in one hit. Bigger boys and those with magical resistance will be able to tank it.(Costs one bar of red mana to cast)(Is always snapcasted)

Raise Dead: Basic necromantic ritual, will bring to life any corpse or dead animal. Can be controlled with SIMPLE spoken commands. More complicated rituals can be performed but require setup to complete. (costs 0.2 bars of black mana to cast)(can be snapcasted for 0.5)

Ghiest Trap: Will temporarily trap a ghiest and force it to follow your commands (costs 1 bar of blue mana)(Is always snapcasted)

Close Mind: Will give you a better chance to resist attacks against your mind, or mind reading spells in general. Will also give you great resistance against insanity. (costs 0.5 blue mana to cast)(is always snapcasted)

===================================================================
>>
>>2484768
NEW SPELLS! (pick 2 new spells)(lorekeeper will roll if there is a tie)

Silence: Will completely stop you or a targeted person or object from making any noise at all, from any action. You can cancel the spell at any point of time. (Costs 1 bar of blue mana)(can be snapcasted for 1.5 bars of blue mana)

Undead Rush: Will cause any undead DIRECTLY under your control to break out in a run, allowing them to quickly close distance and overwhelm opponents. They will also be able to leap onto opponents as well. Effect lasts several minutes. (Costs 1 bar of black mana to cast)(can be snapcasted for 1.5 bars of black mana)

Undead Command: Dislike having to yell every time you want your zombies to kill someone or something? No problem! With this handy spell, you can simply send a small magic pulse to your zombies! (Costs: Nothing)(is always snapcast)

Necromantic Heart: Will allow you and up to one other person who maintains direct contact with you to avoid detection by any wandering undead (meaning not directly controlled). Will also make you appear dead to any who use scrying or magical means to try and detect you. (costs 1 bar of black mana to cast)(can be snapcasted for 1.5 bars of black mana)

Minor Scry (May be changed a bit if it makes it more fun to use): Will let you scope out a room or a small area of space and will allow you to detect both living and magical beings. Those who are using cloaking magics will of course be out of your sight, and you will not be able to control exactly where the spell will end up (costs 1 bar of blue mana to cast)(can be snapcasted for 2 bars of blue mana)

Dark Healing: Steal the very Vis from someone and use it to heal yourself, this can outright kill those who are already injured, but can be resisted by those with enough willpower or physical strength. Vis is the energy that binds a soul to a body. Removing all of it will cause the soul to float freely, leaving the body a dead shell. Cannot be used to heal another person or creature, because sharing isn’t fun. (Costs 2 Black mana to cast)(is always snapcast)
>>
>>2484770
Ball Lightning: Why stop at just a bolt? Why stop at just sensical amounts of damage? Temporarily create a lightning elemental to wreak havoc among enemies. Will do MASSIVE FUCKING DAMAGE, but will be susceptible to harm from enemy weapons or magics. You can direct the ball without additional mana cost (costs 4 bars of red mana per casting)(can one shot angels and keep on chugging to give you an idea of how much raw power this is)(is always snapcast)(also called the BIG BOY)

Blight: Weaken opponents in an arc from the direction you are casting. Depending on the skill and amount of mana you place into this spell, the weakening effect will become greater. Will not do direct damage to opponents and will wear off after a period of time. Can outright kill an opponent if it is unable to resist. Has no effect against undead or vampires.(Costs 1X bars of black mana to cast, which means it costs 1 to cast and then more mana to create the actual effect)(how much additional mana it takes to kill someone is a bit finicky)(is always snapcast)

Blightning: Can’t choose between Bolt and Blight? Well now you don’t have to! Casts a black bolt of lightning out from the user, and upon impact spreads the blight spell around in a radius of the impact point. You cannot regulate the strength of the blight spell due to the combination of mana, but the blight spell is actually pretty powerful. (Costs 1 bar of black mana, and 1 bar of red mana to cast)(Requires both blight, and bolt, to have been learned)(is always snapcast)

Dispel: Will completely negate a casted spell and all its subsequent effects, unless its resisted or itself countered. (Costs 0.5 bars of blue mana to cast) (is always snapcast)

Cancel: Will prevent an opponent’s mage’s spell from being cast unless that mage can manage to overpower it. Basically you cut them off from the mana bank for a few seconds, this of course will mean they’ve wasted what they used to attempt the casting. Differs from dispel in the fact that it works BEFORE a spell gets cast. (Costs 0.5 bars of blue mana to cast)(is always snapcast)

Redirect: Those pesky mages giving you trouble? Not anymore! Allows you to grab their spell out of the air and choose a new target to throw it at! (Costs 2 bars of blue mana to cast)(is always snapcast)

Memory Scatter: Will allow you to selectively remove short term memories from an individual without magical ability. This is a fairly safe spell to use, as you do not go into their LONG TERM memory. VERY USEFUL. (Costs 1 blue mana to cast)(can be snapcast for 1.5 blue mana)
>>
>>2484773
Mind Rot: Can temporarily (or permanently if powerful enough) cause an opponent to lose their concentration for a period of time and be left slightly insane. Effects can vary WIDELY, ALSO CAN CAUSE PERMANENT MENTAL DAMAGE TO THE TARGET, USE WITH CAUTION. (Costs 1 bar of black mana, 1 bar of blue mana, and one bar of any mana to cast)(is always snapcast)

Rage: Will cause a target to go wild with rage, assuming they’re unable to resist the spell. This will have the effect of increasing their strength, speed, and stamina in the process. Both making them a danger to your opponents AND you for about a minute. (Costs 1 red mana to cast)(is always snapcast)

Internal Combustion: Destruction of a different sort. Dislike buildings? Weapon or armor getting in the way of a killing blow? Gargoyle getting you down? Not anymore! With this little spell any unliving material can be blasted from the inside, assuming you can get close enough to give it a little love tap. The effect can be instant or delayed, allowing you to set traps in certain areas! (Costs 1 red mana to cast)(costs 1.5 red mana to snapcast)(EFFECTS MAY VARY)

Bone Splinters: Everyone loves zombies right? Well why not turn them into a lethal rain of bones? With bone splinters, you can! Sacrifice one zombie, gain a storm of killing bones that can be thrown at one target. (Costs 1 zombie or other undead creature you directly control, and 1 bar of black mana to cast)

Lightning Talons: Whats better than sword or claw? A sword or claw with LIGHTNING! Will allow you to temporarily enchant a weapon you OR an undead servant you control is currently wielding. Don’t have a weapon? Don’t mind getting a few second degree burns? No problem! Simple enchant your arms or the arms of something you control! (Costs 2 red mana to cast, effects will last for several seconds.)(CAN CAUSE MASSIVE DAMAGE IF IT CONNECTS)

==================== Chapter Start ====================

Henry awoke with a start, more nightmares. A few hours had passed, he figured there would be a few more hours of sunlight, maybe enough time to head down to the mage guild hall, or go fishing, he hadn’t gone fishing in quite a long time now that he thought about it. Perhaps he could go find a new shortsword? Shop for something else? He didn’t know what else he would even want. New Haven was a fairly small city, and would likely not have a huge variety of goods to buy. Then it hit Henry, he could also try and secure payment, but perhaps it would be too soon.

Outside was a normal day, or as normal as one could find. The sky was fairly clear, dotted by a few lazy clouds slowly making their way across the horizon. Overall the city had been hospitable, despite the issues that the last few days had brought. It always felt weird to not have anything to do. Henry wasn’t sure whether he liked the peace or hated it.

1. Go Fishing
2. Go to Mage Guild Hall
3. Go Shopping (if you want something beyond a new shortsword, write in)
4. Attempt to secure payment from Inquisitors

Henry thought about things for a bit. He was down some coin due to expenses, and having a second mouth to feed didn’t help. It was about damned time he got paid by Grom, and he still had that bet with Cassius. Johnny was nowhere to be found, and Charles was laying down on the floor. As he got up to head out, he noticed that Charles was drawing something or other again and looked bored out of his mind. Poor kid. Johnny was probably doing some food shopping. One of the lovely things about having an undead servant who could THINK.

“Can I please accompany you?” He asked. “I’m going to die of boredom before any assassin gets close.”

“I’m off to head to the inquisitors, do you REALLY want to risk that.”

“That old man didn’t even notice who I was.” Charles responded. “I really doubt any of them do.”

Fair point.

1. Bring Charles along
2. Do not bring him along.
>>
>>2485014
>1. Bring Charles along
Can we disguise him a little? Nothing outlandish. I'm just mildly worried that...say...the bishop or some other church higher-up might recognize him, or his familial resemblance to the aristocracy.

>>
>>2485014
Henry sighed for a moment. He’d been treating the kid a bit too much like baggage to be carried around, rather than a person. Perhaps the squirt could be of some use, but right now he needed to figure out a way to better hide him, that’s when it hit him, his old cloak.

Quickly scrambling through Johnny’s bag he pulled the thing out, a much smaller red cloak with a hood. Basically a smaller version of the one he had now. He wore this when he was about Charles’ age and mainly kept it around as a memento.

“Why do you even have that?” Charles asked, not exactly impressed.

“It’s a bit of a fun memory, alright?” Henry asked, smiling to himself before quickly becoming serious. “Do not talk to them, try not to make eye contact, and keep yourself hidden.” Henry said. He shouldn’t have been surprised when Charles placed the cloak over himself, put the hood up, then used both hands to clamp it shut while giggling like an idiot.

He decided to laugh at himself. He was almost a bit sad he’d have to drop the kid off.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The trip to the inn went easily enough, by now the crowd had dispersed but the bodies still hung there. It’d be a few days before they were taken down. The church claimed the tree needed time to allow the souls to find their way. Just seemed like the church was bragging to Henry.

The Inn where the Inquisitors were staying was exactly the same, although there was more talking going on in the tavern portion of it. Henry heard a few whispers here and there. Big one was about how a town on the frontier had been completely overrun by werewolves and wiped off the map. Henry figured it had just been brought up by recent events. The other bit of news was that the church had started to move around to see who among the nobles was loyal. That was a bit of trouble.
>>
>>2485098
Henry quick ascended the steps with Charles in tow, his face covered by a smaller, rattier red cloak, he should have gotten the boy a better disguise but it was a bit too late to make something proper in his workshop.

“Come in, about time.” Cassius called from inside before he could even knock, fantastic.

Inside Cassius was sprawled out on a bed, the man had recently bathed as his hair was still wet, probably to wash the blood off. He looked like he was only now coming off his adrenaline high. Grom was sitting at the lone desk between the two beds, writing furiously on a piece of parchment, probably some sort of report for the investigators.

“So who’s the squirt?” Cassius asked, turning his head and looking at Charles. Charles for his part seemed to be trying to melt into the floor, he really didn’t like the inquisitors.

“My apprentice.” Henry replied.

“Aren’t you just FULL of secrets.” Cassius responded, chuckling a bit. “Well whatever, to what do we owe this fine visit?”

1. Ask for pay from Grom
2. Demand pay from Cassius since you won the ‘bet’

It is my opinion that all quest discussions should stay within the threads.

> "Also, did you get anything off of Vive? Specifically, a blackened hunk of metal that may have once been a dagger?"
> "I liked that dagger. Fit well in my hands, it did."
>>
>>2485051
Yeah. We'll have some powerful all-or-nothing offensive capability. We just need to figure our how to get more red mana. Is there any equipment we could buy to do that?
>>
>>2485102
I'll be honest. I don't even remember the "bet"
>>
>>2485102
just a clarification on dispel, it doesn't work on more permanent spells or spells that target the self, it wouldn't be able to stop Vives barkskin spell but it WOULD'VE been able to stop her destruction of Jonathons weapon which could've killed her indirectly.

If a zombie is already raised, the spell is useless, but if someone is attempting to raise a zombie you can stop it from occuring.
>>
>>2485137
cancel basically starts a fight with the casting mage, but can be used on ANY spell that they attempt to cast.
>>
>>2485130
the bet was 25 silver for a single capture or killed werewolf, Henry bagged 3
>>
>>2485148
Oh. Then let's get that too.

Also this >>2485124
>>
>>2485102
“Hey Grom, I hate to be intrusive… but…” Henry started out, giving off a friendly smile.

“Ah yes, your pay, I believe this should suffice.” Grom said, before pulling three gold coins out of his coinpurse. That was pretty good for three days labor. Actually it was fantastic for three days worth of labor, this was basically half a year’s salary under normal conditions. The rot proof zombies he’d made had taken a few months’ worth of work overall even if they had paid out slightly better.

“Thanks.” Henry said, “You know I might be in the wrong line of business.”

“Do not be getting any ideas, I was merely desperate to solve this case, it could’ve turned into an unprecedented disaster, not just for New Haven but for the entire church. I pray the removal of some of the nobles has not set in motion any other events like this.”

“I pray to see tomorrow.” Cassius said. “I think he does too.” He said, pointing at Henry. “Well, if he prays at all.”

“I’d hate to ask, but could I receive a sword and dagger as well, equipment expenses.” Henry said.

“That’s as much as I can confidently give to you.” Grom said. “It will be far more than enough for a simple dagger and a simple shortsword.”

Fair enough, Henry really hadn’t expected that to work.

“Did you get anything off Vive, specifically a blackened chunk of metal?” Henry asked.

“The spell cutter she had?” Grom asked. “I’m afraid that is evidence.”

Right so that’s what they were called. Henry knew well of them. The items could store a charge of blue mana and basically cut through a casted spell, like a weaker version of dispel… in fact that might be a good thing to learn. He could’ve prevented the naturalize spell or whatever Vive had casted from destroying Jonathon’s equipment during the battle. The thing had been blasted to shit, but still had managed to protect Vive. Thing had probably only had a half charge left. Lucky him.
>>
>>2485197

“No I just want a dagger, I uh… I stabbed it into Yolk the other day, Vive got a hold of it and tried to kill me with it. I’ve had it for a very long time.” Henry said. “It’s sentimental to me.”

“Hrm… the thing has no real importance to the case, since it had no magical abilities. I suppose I could… misplace it.” Grom said, before reaching under the desk, ruffling through some things, and setting the dagger down on the desk itself, before going back down to seemingly look for something while whistling.

Henry saw what was going on and quickly grabbed the dagger. Drawing a laugh from Cassius. Henry stuffed it into one of his pouches hanging from his jacket. The thing had been fairly destroyed, basically a twisted piece of metal now, he hoped Gerald wouldn’t kill him when this was all over.

“You never change old man.” He said.

“I suppose not.”

“Thanks, I really liked that dagger.” Henry said, eyeing the thing.

1. “Cassius, cough up the money, you lost the bet fair and square.”
2. “I think you owe me 75 silver Cassius.”
3. “You know what Cassius, forget our little bet, let’s just say you owe me a favor, deal?”
4. “So what’s the plan then?” Henry asked. “Can I just do as I please for the remaining days?”
5. *Leave*

“Hey Cassius, I want my damned seventy five silver already” Henry said.

At that Cassius frowned, then sneered. “What sort of cheap bastard do ya take me for?”

Henry took a step back, how had he pissed Cassius off so quickly? His worry faded as he saw Cassius break out into a grin.

“For one, you bagged four of em, and fuck, two of em were REALLY tough, just seventy five silver ain’t shit for that sorta work, here, on me.” He said, tossing Henry a couple of gold coins.

Five gold coins in three days, Henry REALLY couldn’t believe it. This trip had already been more than worth it. God damn he really was in the wrong business. A little danger here or there did little to dissuade him. Money was money.

“Say Henry, you’re alright in my book.” Cassius said. “Want to grab some drinks downstairs, maybe use some of that gold to buy me a round or two.”

“Yeah what the hell, sure.” Henry said, might as well find out any information they could, maybe some info about Cassius himself? The man seemed a bit too… excited to have the job he did, with the risks it entailed.

“A-are you sure?” Charles asked, speaking for the first time. “D-don’t we have to train or something?”

“I’m fresh outta mana kid, so no, I can’t really learn much today. Sides we’re got nowhere to go and no time to be there right now right?”

“I thought I’d be-“ Charles said before getting cut off.

“Ha ha, I knew I liked you.” Cassius said, slapping Henry’s back. Henry stood up straight with a start. When the fuck had Cassius gotten behind him?

“Hey Grom, want to join us?” Cassius asked. All he got in response was a stern stare from Grom. “Killjoy.”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The bar was still lively as ever, the day was quickly drawing to a close and the place was filled with merchants and tradesmen who were taking a bit of a day off. Henry supposed it wasn’t every day that a bunch of Inquisitors saved the town.

Still, it was a bit tense, the man sitting across from him and Charles, the man who didn’t take anything seriously it seemed, could easily have him hanged if he found out exactly who he was. He’d be double hanged if he figured out who Charles was. But in his years of grifting and scheming, Henry knew that trying to hide something so obviously would only make them more suspicious. Sometimes it was better to have your dagger out in the open after all.

Lets do that, but after a few rounds.

Before asking any questions, Henry did the most important thing, order drinks. He got himself an old Battleaxe Walnut ale, Cassius ordered a Cathar’s Bane, and for Charles he got a cup of applejuice, imported from Mont’ Riley. Lastly he got some bread for the three of them to munch on, it’d been a little while since he’d eaten and he was a bit peckish. Taking a sip from his mug, Henry began to ask a few questions.

“So how long have you been an inquisitor?” He asked.

“You won’t believe this, but, this was my first real mission. I was in training for like… fiveish years. Give or take, finally got the full honors and all.”

“How long you been paired with Grom.”

“Longer than I’m happy with. To be honest I think I’ve just been pushed on him since nobody else would really want to work with me, hopefully after all the fun we’ve had here that might change. I think good fortunes coming for all of us!” He said, raising his glass and taking a hearty swig. “I can’t be too mad at the old fart, he’s kept me alive through all of this, and through all my training too!”

“So a good while then?” Henry asked.

“Yeah, a good while.” Cassius responded.

They talked for a few more minutes, about nothing of much importance. It reminded Henry of business discussions in a way, you never knew when the guy across the table would snap. One moment he’d be all smiles, the next he’d be shoving a dagger at you. He didn’t really hate the inquisitors as much as he thought he would. Grom’s realism was refreshing in a way. Cassius… was a mixed bag, he really couldn’t figure the man out.

“Whats the word on the road to Yorkshire?” Henry asked.

“I suppose Grom didn’t have time to tell ya. Infested would be the word for it. Undead horde, bout… dunno, sixty, seventy strong. We would’ve left in a few more days after we had the investigators situated here but they’ve begun to threaten a hamlet.” Cassius said. “What was its name… its uh… past Stone Grove… ah, right, it’s the hamlet of Blaise, hardly fifty people living there. But still, the fact it’s getting threatened by the undead horde increases the priority of this little cleansing operation. To think that this whole trip started as a fucking milk run for me.”

The idea that Cassius was completely green shocked Henry, the man was already VERY dangerous, and he hadn’t even gotten that much training. Hell he looked younger than Henry himself was. Maybe eighteen, nineteen at the most. Henry felt a bit old thinking about it.

Henry finished his drink and quickly ordered a second, Cassius did similarly. Charles on the other hand was just gingerly sipping at his cup.

“Never had apple juice before?” Henry asked. “I’m somewhat surprised.

“N-no…” Charles said. “S-sorry.”

“Pfft, stop being so hard on yourself, lighten up a bit.” Henry said. “We made it to the end of this little debacle and we’re alive. That’s something to be grateful for!” Henry said. He didn’t really mean it of course, but he might as well try to keep the kid happy.

“So Cassius? You’re from Bressa Province right? What’s it like?” Henry asked.

“Well for one, the roads are a HELL of a lot less safe during the night, we have werewolves out the god damned ass, and the walls of our cities ain’t for show like they are here.” He said. “Lot of farmers, shepherds, and the like up there, some trappers you find occasionally that make the journey into the frontier. We also get real howlpacks, fucking bands of organized werewolves. Not like this sorry little bunch we dealt with.” He said. “Beyond that, you see some weird nature stuff. Help is much farther away and people sometimes just disappear into the night, never to be seen again. Honestly it’s the only place in the world I’d call home.” He said, smiling.

“I...huh.” Henry said.

“It’s not THAT dangerous mate, we still have angels in plenty of the big cities, and they keep the main roads safe enough. You get more nature ghiests up that way as well I guess. Sometimes a rouge lumberknot comes out of the forests…”

“All you’re talking about is how damned dangerous it is.” Henry replied.

“Well I mean, Sol Province is a damned cakewalk in comparison. You folks have it easy here. It’s the capital province for a reason I suppose.”

“Huh.” Henry said, he’d never thought about it like that. He just stayed here since Celeste was the best place to find ‘clients’.

“Beyond that… I mean, the people are a lot more generous, you city folk don’t know much bout hospitality. Nor about how to live off the land, nor do you have much respect for it.” Cassius said.

“H-hey now.” Charles said.

“Pfft, I don’t mean you two of course. I mean a lot of the priests and higher ranking nobles and what not, they don’t know how good they have it.” Cassius replied

“What sort of magic’s do you find up there?” Henry asked.

“Lot more green mana then you find down here, that’s for sure. Generally only those who are… oh what did that old bat say… those who are ‘in tune with nature’ are able to use it.” Cassius said, making air quotes mockingly. “The world don’t change and there ain’t nothing wrong with that. That’s how she described the mindset anyway.”

“Who?” Henry asked.

“My dear ma, rest her soul.” Cassius said.

They finished another round of drinks, Henry ordered one last round, he didn’t want to go much further than this though. He wanted to keep himself alert and prevent himself from doing anything too crazy. He’d nearly been banned from Nessie’s place on more than one occasion.

“So what do you think about that monk who’s coming with us, kinda cute ey?” Henry asked, leaning a bit back in his chair.

“Yeah, a real looker. Kinda odd she hasn’t settled down with someone, girl like that wouldn’t have a hard time finding suitors.” Cassius said. “Wonder what’s wrong with her.”

“What?” Henry asked.

“Look, lotta the members of the healers circle aren’t exactly pretty women. That or they’re widows who refuse to remarry.” Cassius said. “Girl like her being there just sticks out like a sore thumb, y’know?”

“You shouldn’t talk ill of someone who isn’t around.” Charles said.

“As long as she doesn’t find out it’ll be fine.” Henry said. “Sides you can’t fault us for having our fun kiddo.”

“You got anyone back home Cassius?” Henry asked. “Special someone?”

“Me? Pfft, no, I don’t expect to come out of this job alive, why have all the attached baggage?” Cassius said. Man was upfront and honest about himself, Henry admitted. “And you?” Cassius asked.

“I’ve just not found the right person, y’know?” Henry said.

“Time’s tickin bud.” Cassius said. “I know it might sound odd from me but you’re only young so long. Good lord Grom is rubbing off on me now.”

Henry finished the rest of his drink and stood up. He had really enjoyed being able to unwind for once, something he wished he did a bit more often. Still, staying in prolonged conversation with Cassius could risk blowing his cover.

“Leaving already?” Cassius asked.

“Me and my apprentice here need to set up some time at the local mage’s guild, he finally is going to learn some basic magic.” Henry said.

“Ha, can’t start too young now can we?” Cassius said. “Have fun with all that official business mumbo jumbo!”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The mages guild was buzzing with activity. A large chunk of stone with a flat face for chiseling was sitting deeper in the courtyard being worked on by a couple people in robes Henry didn’t recognize. He guessed it was the main tower’s light rune. About damned time. A man with a large white beard was overseeing them, Henry guessed it was Fargus. Henry also noticed that the gatehouse was once again empty. Guess since the party was over there wasn’t any need to be protective. The sun had really started to set now, there wouldn’t be too much daylight left.

“So this is a mage’s guild.” Charles said, looking around. “I dunno but I thought it would have more magical stuff…”

“Wait till we actually get inside.” Henry said, dismissively.

Henry quickly entered the mage’s guild, using one hand to forcefully shove the door open, spooking the man at the counter, Theo, pretty badly. Charles sheepishly followed behind, trying to not be noticed. He really didn’t like speaking to new people on a good day, but this wasn’t exactly a good day. Charles pulled his hood even farther up his head, hoping his face was completely blocked off.

“Sorry about the scare.” Henry said, “I just wanted to try and reserve some space to practice some spellcraft, just for a day, would that be possible?” He asked.

“I was just heading to get some dinner… but I suppose I could pencil you in.” Theo responded. “Caught me right as I was leaving… actually I never got your name.”

“You can call me Henry.” Henry said.

“Right right.” Theo said. “So just one person then?” He asked, grabbing a book and a pencil out and beginning to write something down.

“Two actually, me and my apprentice.” Henry said. He was really liking how that sounded. Maybe he would find a real one to work under him, if he could actually find someone he could trust. Would at least allow him to take on more jobs. “We’d like to be here from about noon… until about three I’d say.”

“Alright, didn’t think you had anyone with you.” Theo said. The entire time the man had not even noticed Charles was there, Henry wasn’t about to correct him either.

“First, payment up front, second I’ll guide you to the central mage chamber when you arrive tomorrow at noon. Couple of rules, do not wander off. Do not disturb anyone else who is here. Lastly do not damage or try to steal anything or the security will be activated, and we might not be able to turn it off in time before it does damage to your person.” Theo said.

“The gargoyles right?” Henry asked.

“That and more.” Theo responded.

Henry handed over a couple of silver coins, reserving a room didn’t exactly come cheap, but with the enchantments and other rare artifacts in place in this building he’d be able to cast spells with barely any cost to himself. A near ideal environment, at least if this place was constructed correctly.

“Will that be all then?” Theo asked. “Not to be rude but I’ve been working all day.”

“So what’s the latest around this place?” Henry asked, watching as Theo placed the coins under the desk in what he assumed was a safe, and then slowly start stashing more papers and other things away. Slowly finishing the job that he’d started before Henry arrived.

“Honestly, the whole little dust up you and the inquisition were involved in.” Theo said. “I guess Fargis has FINALLY gotten over all of the madness that happened here earlier in the week as well. Between the noble getting thrown on the tree and the howlpack, life has been rather exciting around here. I guess we did notice some weird fluctuations of mana, especially in the sewers earlier today, kind of odd, but it settled down and all of us have our duties. Sides none of us want to get stuck near that crazy ratcatcher. Might’ve had something to do with how Cherry Bridge exploded.” Theo finished.

Right, that must’ve been where all that excess mana Vive released went to, shit. Henry hoped he wouldn’t get sent a bill for inadvertently causing it.

“I did have one last question.” Henry said, cracking a grin.

“What?” Theo asked, finishing his tasks and turning around to face Henry.

“Do you have any Coffee left?” Henry said, grinning widely. Charles looked up at him with a bit of curiosity.

Theo grimaced. “No. I. Do. Not. Sir.” He said, in a bit of a huff. “I hope you do enjoy stealing what isn’t yours. I need that to stay awake on the job, it’s very important!”

“Relax relax, it was a joke bud.” Henry said, placing his hands up in mock surrender. “Here, for putting up with me and for helping me reserve the room. I’m leaving you a little tip. To cover dinner.” Henry said placing a few copper coins on the countertop.

Theo gave Henry a looked before scooping the coins up into his hand.

“Well in that case you have a good evening Henry!” Theo said, before walking Henry and Charles to the door and letting them back into the main courtyard.

“What do we do now?” Charles asked.

“I want to go see how bad the bridge is.” Henry said. “Heck we might even learn something.”

“Won’t it be dangerous going outside the wall this close to nighttime?” Charles asked.

“Long as we’re inside the rune barrier we’ll be just fine.” Henry said. “Sides all the local werewolves are dead now, so it’s safer than ever!”

“We shouldn’t tempt fate.” Charles said. The two began the make their way to the mage’s guild gatehouse.

“Fate’s a fat old whore kid, she can’t tell a hero from an idiot.” Henry replied.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++=

The bridge was completely devastated. Its span had crashed into the river and had sunk below the water. There were a couple people walking around but other than that the place was fairly deserted. Anyone who had been doing work here was long gone for the day.

Henry wondered how badly this would affect the city. None of this would be ideal. But the mages would probably be called in to at the very least try to salvage some of the stone. The bridge had been a timber and stone construction at one point, and even from a distance it had looked incredibly sturdy. To have been reduced to what appeared to be rubble… that was terrifying. Henry took a seat by the riverbank and pondered for a moment. He’d probably saved a few hundred lives today. If that spell had gone off and done THIS to the city, well New Haven would’ve been finished.

The sun had set, and moonrise had begun. The moon, now full, rose into the sky, and far away Henry could hear the howling of wolves. Not unnatural howling of those horrible things, but normal, basic, wolves. They still made Henry a bit nervous of course. He rubbed his arm remembering his bite from earlier in the day. Even with the thing healed it still throbbed weirdly. Sorta like how his body had after being healed the other day.

Charles looked terrified to be out at night. Admittedly the kid had a reason, but they were in the rune barrier, even wild animals didn’t like being near the damned things and anything infernal would be completely unable to pass through them. Without Church holy magic’s these wonders wouldn’t even exist.

Let's see, if it's a low roll, maybe some coins or low grade gems, some bones from a mouse or bird that we can necromance on, or some cheater's dice. Medium, perhaps a dagger, hunting knife, or hatchet, a waterskin or wineskin with something in it, a buckler or leather shield. High, a sword or a hunting spear, some sort of map to a treasure, or maybe a survivor who got trapped under the rubble. A crit, something really unusual and neat.

How's that for example loot?

“Come on, we might as well scavenge a bit.” Henry said, slowly rising off the ground and beginning to head towards the rubble.

“We won’t find anything of value!” Charles called, running after Henry.

“Au Contair my good friend.” Henry said, reaching the rubble pile and beginning to dig around. “You’d be surprised what you’ll find in other people’s garbage or rubble. Heck that’s kinda my job in a nutshell, make useless things useful again.”

“I’m still not helping, I don’t want to lose my hand.” Charles said, eyeing the piles of rubble that had once made up the city side of the bridge. “And it’ll probably get you into trouble.”

“I’ve been doing this most my life, and sides, we can’t get in trouble if nobody sees us.” Henry said. “A good life lesson.”

A good fifteen minutes later, Henry pulled something fantastic out of the rubble. A nice looking dagger, it even had a nicely made leather sheath. It even sported a small hilt with twisted guards for the users hands. It didn’t have any magic or anything in it, but it would be worth some coin. Henry needed a new dagger anyway.

“Wow.” Charles said, he’d run over to have a look.

“Hope you learned something your highness.” Henry said a bit sarcastically. “But never be too proud to go digging, you can find all sorts of buried treasures. Another valuable life lesson.” Henry said.

“Here ya go kid, think of it as a gift.” Henry said, handing the dagger over.

“Oh you shouldn’t have.” Charles said, before closely inspecting the thing. “Henry… this is beautiful.” He said, looking it over.

“Probably belonged to a tradesman.” Henry said. “It isn’t that fancy but it’s a bit fancier than that peasant’s dagger I gave you.”

“I… thank you Henry.” Charles said, beginning to tear up. Henry smacked the kid upside the head.

“None of that now, you gotta toughen up, or you won’t survive out here, got it?” Henry asked smiling despite himself.

“Yes sir!” Charles said, wiping his arm over his eyes to clear the tears away.

Henry smiled. “Good, maybe you’ll survive our journey then, eh?”
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The trip back was peaceful, with Henry and Charles exchanging a bit of banter. Charles had finally started to open up a bit. Henry was a bit relieved, he had thought the kid wouldn’t recover, but maybe he never really cared too much for his parents. Henry himself could understand it, not from personal experience exactly, but from secondhand knowledge.

Upon returning to the inn room, Johnny awaited them. He’d gathered some supplies for the trip to the hamlet of Blaise, and was probably awaiting some actual instruction. Henry simply waved hello before falling into the bed. He wished he’d packed a change of clothes.

Easy.

Henry is an antisocial who lives in the sewers. Unable to take Johnny in a straight fight, and surrounded by knives used for his necromantic work, they instead pass the time by playing darts with said knives among other games.

While not used to aiming at a moving target, Johnny nonetheless is more or less able to stick the pointy end into a center of mass shaped target.

Personally I think we should look at some padded jerkins or leather armor. We keep getting beat up.
>>

Doesn't seem to be such a hard thing to make. Just get bunch of small fish hooks attach them to a small metal lump. I think pretty much anyone could devise something like this.

I'd Henry is not unfamiliar with throwing knives, let's get them too.

“Johnny.” Henry said, bolting up for a moment.

“Yes sir?” Johnny said, folding his arms behind his back and moving to a completely upright position.

“Here’s the deal with plans for tomorrow.” Henry said. “I want you to join us at the mages guild to watch over us just in case. I’d rather us all stay in a group for now.” Henry said.

“As you wish. Anything else?”

“I want you to help me get a steel blade, not some shitty iron thing.” Henry said. “I’ve finally got the money to justify getting one, and you know I’ve always wanted it. When it comes to understanding quality I won’t trust anyone besides you.”

“A new toy to go along with Charles’?” Johnny asked.

“Sure, whatever you say bud.” Henry replied. “Just help me with this.”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

For once in a long while, Henry didn’t dream of anything. A welcome relief

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Henry woke up to sunlight leaking into the room. It was about eight or so in the morning based on where the sun was. Maybe he could splurge on an ACTUAL pocket watch, although such a thing might be hard to come by in a small city like this. Maybe one day he could justify heading to Grasberg, get a really well made watch. The things always fascinated him.

The main list of items on his line up were as follows. Find a new sword, do some training in the guild hall, and maybe, just maybe, find some time to do some ACTUAL fishing. Good lord he’d missed doing so. He had told Johnny the prior night to make sure that he kept a few makeshift poles at the ready in case they had the opportunity. Johnny had used his few hundred years of knowledge and skill to craft them, and for being made out of a few branches, they looked well made.

Henry stretched up, got up, and got fully dressed. Then he shook Charles awake. The boy got up with a start and then began getting ready.

“Why are we up so early?” Charles asked.

“Welcome to the real world kiddo.” Henry replied.
>>
>>2489320
Henry stretched and then grabbed the rest of his things. He had a leisurely day ahead of himself. He had a few new spells he wanted to try. First and foremost, he needed to brush up on how to dispel casted spells, the fact he hadn’t known how to do that during his clash with Vive was embarrassing. It wouldn’t have prevented all of her spellcasting but he might’ve been able to stop her from destroying Jonathon’s pike… he wouldn’t think too hard about it now. He could probably slip a few more coins to Theo so the man would give him target spells to dispel.

Secondly he wanted to try temporarily enchanting a weapon with lightning. He’d have to practice to get the flow right, but he had a fairly good idea of how he’d do it, hopefully. He didn’t want to melt any more swords.

Next up was Charles. He really doubted he could coax anything out of the boy in three hours, but maybe he could get the mindset down correctly. He figured the kid would have access to at least one color of mana, otherwise he’d be a lost cause. It’d take a lot more practice than just this trip for the kid to get this whole magic thing down. But at least He’d have something to show for it. Henry thought.

Lastly, there was replacing the short sword. Henry wanted to go for an actual steel sword instead of the shitty iron one he’d had. It’d be a good deal more expensive, but it would hold a lot better, rust a lot slower, and would probably cut better too.

He might be able to do a few more things as well, but who knew.

the armor idea is pretty good. Henry doesn't like heavy armor since A. he's not THAT strong, and B. he doesn't like being a sitting duck.

As for the dagger ideas. I actually really like that. I can totally roll with it.

after some further thought, I have some thoughts

first off, simply shoving a small piece of metal onto someone like that and having it work perfectly would be FAR too easy and would break combat

Secondly, I've decided that the metal has to go a good ways into someone for the full effect of the bolt to be felt, otherwise it will dissapate into the air so to speak (magical BS)

I hope you understand why I have to do that.

The first thing the three of them did was go to breakfast. It was then that Henry determined another problem. Johnny didn’t eat anything, although that’d be easy enough to explain as Johnny just being weird, Henry had already told the inquisitors as much.

Breakfast was fantastic. The Inn at the Crossroads had a REALLY good platter. Fried ducks’ eggs, bacon, a few sausages, blood pudding, and even half a loaf of bread. Charles had a smaller portion but similar food. Johnny of course sat and watched. A bit longingly Henry thought. The man sometimes did that when he was eating something good, although he never paid it too much mind.

“So here’s to us surviving the first leg of this crazy little trip.” Henry said, raising a mug of coffee up in the air.

“Amen.” Johnny said, clicking his gauntleted hand against the mug.

“Thanks for everything so far.” Charles said, placing his mug of coffee up as well, clinking it with Henry’s. Kid might become a coffee drinker after today. Henry’s good teachings had finally started rubbing off on the kid.

The three sat and made merry. It was nice, almost like a little family. Henry thought. Even if the trip didn’t turn out exactly as planned, Henry found himself enjoying it. He knew better than to, but a little indulgence didn’t hurt once in a while.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Peddler’s row was the same hustle and bustle as it usually was. Henry quickly set out to work, with Charles and Johnny in tow. The first thing he got was a small set of throwing daggers, three of them to be exact, and a small belt with holsters for them. He was excited to try it back on in the inn.
>>
>>2489401

The next piece was the one he’d been waiting for, a steel short sword. He went for as plain as he could, fancy would be noticed too easily, and when he got back to Celeste he didn’t want THAT sorta word to go around. Best way to avoid getting robbed or worse was to appear poor. The thing was dull and didn’t shine much in the sun, and the sheath was properly shitty looking, but would hold up very nicely. A blade that wouldn’t draw attention, perfect.

Next up was something he’d been wondering about for a while, leather armor. He’d never really figured he’d need it, with his connections in Celeste, and the relative lack of dangers there. But out here on the road? That was a different matter. The main issue would be finding something that would fit. Getting a custom fitting would be very expensive. So a basic piece of armor would have to do.

Henry sighed as he gave one of his gold coins away to an excited merchant and received a leather chest piece that fit well enough. It was lightly studded and would probably save him from a few slashes from a dagger or shortsword, maybe. He didn’t want anything heavier to slow him down. Out in the world, there were way too many things that’d just BITE right through armor, not to mention magic. He debated grabbing a few thick leather gloves but decided against it. Things would just cut off his spells, and he really didn’t want to spend the time trying to cast from midair. He did grab a few light leather gloves, they wouldn’t protect him from too much but it would be better than nothing, and would keep his hands warm. He also got a couple of hardened leather shoulder guards to go with his armor. It might make him die slowly instead of instantly at least.

He considered getting leather armor for his legs but it would make him stand out too much, people would notice someone who looked like a merc, and he could hide the chest piece under his cloak. Secondly, every piece of armor would just weigh him down more, this thing already weighed several pounds and was noticeable.

The last thing Henry grabbed was a basic dagger, he slid the thing back in the slot on the getup of pouches he had set up, he’d have to figure out how to make the leather armor fit over them without restricting his movement, that would be fun.

He of course had Johnny carry everything.

Henry would have continued to shop but it was getting later in the day, time to head down to the mage’s guild.

Henry began to do some mental arithmetic before turning to Johnny.

“You got our normal traveling supplies already right?” He asked. “With extra for Charles?”

“Hardtack, jerky, nuts and oats, medical supplies like bandages, the like. I’ve filled our waterskins, triple checked to make sure we won’t be carrying too much, and gotten those coffee beans you like to chew on so much…” Johnny said, “You know I’m physically incapable of forgetting correct?”

“And I’m physically incapable of not checking.” Henry shot back. “At least it’s all taken care of. Charles, enjoy the next couple of meals since we won’t be seeing the likes of them for a few more days.”

“Yes sir!” Charles said. Henry almost thought the kid would salute.

Henry stopped into a curios shop for one last thing, a deck of playing cards, it cost him a decent amount of silver but he had forgotten his usual set at home and besides that one was missing a few cards anyways. He considered grabbing some lamp oil but decided against it, the candles they already had packed would do, he couldn’t go splurging on imports from the coast now. Sides, if he REALLY needed to burn something he could just use the medical alcohol. A few sparks were generally enough to start a campfire so he doubted he’d really need it.

Lastly he grabbed three more throwing knives, he wondered if he’d emptied the place out of throwing knives. The shopkeeper seemed really happy though, so it wasn’t a huge deal.

When he checked his coin Henry was a bit dismayed, he only had seven gold coins and about forty five silver left, as well as some assorted copper. This gear had cost him a decent amount. He hoped it would be worth it. He generally disliked spending so much at once, but he’d earned quite a bit too, and was still in the green. He would just make sure to spread the coin over the rest of the journey. In case he needed it for later on when he got home, if any of his previous clients had been captured by the church he might be in trouble financially. It’d remain to be seen.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Mages Guild’s glass windows reflected the sun’s light beautifully. Henry really did like the building, with its stonework and the gargoyles. A bit opulent for his tastes but otherwise tasteful. He saw the block of stone in the yard with the same two mages working on it. They’d managed to get a good chunk of it done. One was still chiseling while the other was laying out a spell circle. The whole thing was covered by an open tent to keep rain off of it in case of a storm. No sense to have your spell circle wasted by nature.

Nobody else was really in the yard itself, but Henry could feel the flow of mana within the building today. He figured it was back to business as usual.

eh I will admit I have unleashed a stupid amount of autism when it came to hashing out undead and necromancy before in my...uh settings. Pissed me off that undead were so criminally underrated. Necromancy got developed as a side effect.

Less in terms of spells and more in terms horrifying shit you can pull off when you don't care about whether or not the patient could survive the procedure. Necromancers particularly the less experienced ones who didn't as much magic to work with were especially fond of such 'arts'.

When you consider the 'canvass' is a corpse that doesn't actually have survival requirements. It allows you to...pull of some really disturbing shit. As a result, it was common among necromancers to include some...handmade 'tools' that they concealed upon them that they made from scratch. Usually from a mixture of leather and bone. They are purposefully made to not look sinister and be easy to hide, but when a necromancer is in danger they can animate such possessions to deadly effect. Also having a living rope made of leather with sharp metal bits mixed in can be extraordinarily useful.

The best part is unless you look VERY closely it just looks like some simple animation magic instead of proper necromancy. That is just the stuff they can carry on their person. Back in their labs...that is where the real abominations can be found.

Stuff that would give even the ancient and powerful undead a run for their money.

>>2489377
The reason it doesn't work that way IRL is physical contact. Theoritically if you could somehow stop yourself from touching the armor around you. It would indeed function as if it were a faraday cage.

>>2489459
But doesn't the electricity travel around the outside edge of the faraday cage, leaving the inside, even the metal parts, safe?

>>
>>2489454
>3. Write in

See any coffee around?
>>
>>2489462
Nope. If there is contact then the electricity will travel through it. Which means you have to create a barrier between it. If there is a barrier the electricity can't transfer over.

Its why touching a piece of electrified metal or a live wire in a pool of water is bad. It becomes a conduit the moment you touch it and get zapped. A Faraday cage is basically using that concept to trap the electricity from harming what's inside it. It does this by making sure there is no conduit between itself and the object being protected. Hence the 'cage'.

If it actually worked like that electricians would be wearing metal armor instead of relying on the rubber to protect themselves.

>>2489700
You only animate it when necessary. As for the metal bits, you tie that shit on when you need it to be extra deadly. Otherwise, it just looks like a bunch of rope.

Basically using the skills of a mortuary worker and a surgeon. You can pull of some really freaky shit when using necromancy. Even in terms of simple equipment, you carry around with you.

Another example would be a variant of splint mail, but you replace the metal plates with bone and sinew. When animated it functions as a pseudo suit of power armor. Allowing you to throw more armor on top of it and have a stronger 'body'.

Shit gets even weirder if you figure out how to animate dead plant matter.

That stuff is just really basic examples of the cool stuff you can pull off with a bit of skill and some necromancy.
>>
>>2490480
you generally need green and black mana to do shit with plant matter. Henry doesn't have green.
>>
>>2491287
Ah thought green was just living kind. Thought maybe Black would cover dead plant growth. Ah well.

So are you borrowing the Magic: The Gathering card game in terms of magic?

That's why I thought Black would cover dead plant growth given its love of swamps full of rotting plant matter.
>>
>>2490480
So Necromancy is just nano-machines, son?

You still need to make the undead bits to actually support the weight of the armor, so it would be more like a bone exoskeleton.

Over which you would then have to place armor. Might as well just bolt it right to the bones and have outright (necromantic) power armor.
>>
>>2489459
>>2490480
This stuff is interesting and I might even use some of it later on. To be honest I'm surprised there was enough interest in the nitty gritty. I have some basic stuff outlined but I'm willing to go into more depth with the mechanics.

Henry took a moment to get a feel for the mana flow around and inside of the building. There was a surprising amount of blue mana flowing around here. The fact that there was blue mana wasn’t very surprising, just the sheer amount. Henry figured that the mages were either testing or making something, perhaps related to the light rune? Something else? Didn’t really matter, it wasn’t why he was here. The only other thing he noticed was that three of the gargoyles had shifted positions since the prior day. That was a tad creepy.

Entering into the building, Henry met face to face with Theo again. The man had barely moved from that spot all week, was this just his job? Henry sighed before waving to the man. He wanted to get right down to business with the limited time they had at their disposal. He noticed that the coffee pot with the heat rune set up was still placed far out of reach of any visitors. Henry guessed that wouldn’t be changing any time soon. That also didn’t matter much, he’d gotten his coffee for the day already.
Decision:
1. “So is this just your job or do you like the front desk?”
2. “I’d like to pay you to create some target practice for me to dispel. Would you mind?”

“I’d like to pay you to create some target practice for me to dispel, would you mind?” Henry asked. holding up a couple of silver coins. He knew well enough how expensive a mages time could be.

“For that amount? Yeah I can spare some time.” Theo responded. “How long do you need?”

“Probably an hour, maybe two at the most.” Henry responded. “I just really need to practice my dispelling. It’s been a while.”

“So nothing too difficult?” Theo asked.

“Yeah, nothing like that.” Henry said, waving his hand dismissively.

Theo took a good look around the lobby before ducking down and placing a sign on the desk. It was a simple construction made out of wood. A single line of words ran its length, with a bit of red paint inlaid into it to make them pop out. It read simply “out to lunch.”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The mage chamber that Henry had rented was surprisingly large, a round room about sixty feet in diameter with a flat stone floor perfect for creating spell circles. The rooms ceiling terminated in a dome with a large skylight to allow the room to be perfectly lit. On the walls were all manner of complicated runes which were protected by a fair amount of magical shielding. A perfect place to test out spell craft.

As the group descended the couple of stone steps into the room, Henry noticed something. There was no mana resistance in here. He’d be able to cast spells with virtually no cost to himself. He had been expecting this but it always surprised him whenever he entered one. It just felt different in a way he couldn’t describe.

Charles was awestruck, he was slowly walking the length of the room, placing his hand on the glowing blue barrier which protected the runework and enchantments that allowed the chamber to function.
Johnny simply grunted then placed their newly purchased supplies on the ground next to the steps at the edge of the chamber. He pulled out a couple of the throwing daggers and a whetstone and began to sharpen them. Henry didn’t blame the skeleton for not wanting to participate. He wouldn’t be able to contribute much.

“So do you wish to start now?” Theo asked. “We don’t get too many visitors and I doubt Fargis will even notice I’m gone. So I don’t mind much either way.”

Decisions:
1. Try to teach Charles to calm his mind

“I want your help right now. Can you stand over there and cast something that won’t kill me, but dangerous enough for me to want to block?” Henry said.

“I can cast a weakening spell, would that work?” Theo said.

“That will do nicely.” Henry responded, before walking over to Charles. “Hey kid, I want you to wait over with Johnny for a few minutes while we practice, I really don’t want you getting hit by something on accident.” Henry replied.

“Alright, mind if I draw some of these runes out? They’re magnificent.”

“Do what you wish.” Henry replied, patting the kid on the shoulder before sending him back over to Johnny.

Theo was muttering to himself, a few flickers of blue mana emanating from the man’s hands once in a while.

“I’m ready when you are!” Henry shouted over to him, causing Theo to jump. The man had been so caught up in planning his spell out that’d he’d forgotten why he wanted to cast it. Blue mages were all the same, Henry thought.

“Fine, I’m casting it now!” Theo said, before gathering up blue mana and casting it towards Henry. The thing was a heck of a lot quicker than he’d been expecting, he had moments to react. Was the man trying to kill him or something?!

Its more a matter of how obvious you want it to be. Disguising armor padding for necromantic uses can be very hard to detect and act like psuedo power armor.

Proper necromantic power armor is obviously doable but its gonna be fairly obvious.

Another example of a useful tool is a net made of the sinew which can be animated to better entangle the foe. Or its smaller cousin a thread of sinew whose end possess a metal spike or bone preferably one that is similar to a drill. It can fling itself at the enemy with the stabby effect but it is not as good at entangling as the net is. On the other hand, once it has hit its target can attempt to burrow its way deeper into the enemy.

A very nasty weapon but one that is very simple to make for a necromancer.

>>2492840
The nitty gritty is where necromancy really shines. Its ability to ignore keeping the subject alive allows for some really great albeit often horrifying stuff.

Henry immediately began to draw upon his blue mana, trying to draw a line to lead the spell up and away from him while dissipating it, like he remembered. He managed to block the spell with his forehead. The sensation was like drowning, it was horrible. Henry felt his legs go numb, then his entire body. Then he fell down like a sack of potatoes, hitting his head against the stone floor and blacking out for a moment.

Henry awoke to see Charles desperately trying to shake him awake. The boy had tears streaming down his face. Behind him was a less worried, but still concerned Theo. Johnny was barely stifling laughter, the man was almost rolling on the ground with joy.

“A-ARE YOU OKAY?” Charles said, stepping back and allowing Henry to get up.

“My head hurts something fierce, but other than that I’m fine. Holy hell, I told you to give me something easy Theo.” Henry said.

“That um, that was easy bud.” Theo responded.

“How long was I out for?”

“About fifteen minutes I’d reckon?” Theo responded. “Maybe you’d do better if you saw me do it once?”

“Yeah yeah.” Henry said, finally getting up. He rubbed the back of his head. Had that been a bolt spell or something else like it he’d be dead as all hell.

“What a fantastic magus you are.” Johnny called out, before bursting into laughter. At least the skeleton had waited until he knew he was okay.

“Hey Theo... is there any chance I could slid a few more coins to you so word of this doesn’t get out…”

“I wasn’t going to tell anyone anyways Henry. I’m not really supposed to be doing this in the first place.” Theo responded sheepishly. “Sides I wouldn’t tell people about something that embarrassing.”

“Don’t bother trying to pay the man off, I’ll tell the entire city!” Johnny said, the skeleton was fake wheezing for effect after finishing his laughing fit. Fucker. Henry bit his tongue and turned back to Theo.

“Alright, let’s do this then. I know a lightning spell, I’ll cast it weakly so it won’t kill you if it hits, that work for you?” Henry said.

“I should be able to manage.” Theo replied, before heading back over to his side of the room.

“Charles, scoot back over to Johnny and kick him in the head for me.” Henry said. In all seriousness this was an actually dangerous spell. While blue mana generally couldn’t be used to kill, red mana was a whole different beast.

“Ready!” Theo called out. Henry could already see the blue mana flowing from the man’s hands.

Henry cast his bolt spell, still amazed at how easily it manifested in the room. The thing flew almost instantly across the room, before being stopped and dissipated by something. Even at half power Henry could feel the heat of the bolt as it manifested in his hand, just a hairs breath from death with every casting.

Henry watched as Theo moved his hand in an arc upwards. Creating a sort of shield made of blue mana. The lightning arced up the shield while growing smaller and dissipating. The bolt fizzled pathetically after another moment. The whole exchange had happened in less than two seconds.

“Well that’s what I did wrong.” Henry murmured to himself. He’d tried to CATCH the spell before, not make a temporary shield.

“Are you ready for round two?” Theo called back across the room.

As Theo began summoning the required energies for the weakness spell, Henry decided to get back at Johnny while proving the skeleton wrong. Henry summoned some blue mana into his right hand, while crossing his left arm underneath his right and flipping Johnny off. It was a bit of an awkward position but Henry knew he could handle it. He knew what he needed to do now.

Theo’s spell sailed beautifully across the room, and in an instant Henry casted dispel and blocked the spell with one hand. The shield of blue mana that was created was far larger and more solid looking that Theo’s had been, and the bolt of weakness shattered into pieces upon contacting it, before dissipating into nothing. Henry then spread the remnants of the shield out with his hands, creating a nice little light show. An added flourish from someone who had a lot of natural talent.

Theo was left dumbstruck, the man had never seen such a quick learner before. Charles clapped after the display, the kid had wiped the tears off his face and was once more looking at Henry in awe. Johnny said nothing, the fucker had finally stopped laughing.

Henry had a lot of things on his mind, however, one thing and one thing only needed to be said before anything else.

“SUCK IT JOHNNY, WHO’S THE REAL FUCKING MAGUS NOW?” Henry yelled out, probably the loudest anyone had ever been in this mage’s chamber.

Johnny looked at Henry for a moment then grumbled before going back to sharpening the throwing daggers. “You still shouldn’t have forgotten such a basic spell..” He murmured. Henry of course didn’t care, everyone knew he’d won.

“That was amazing!” Charles said. his eyes wide with excitement. “Teach me teach me teach me!”

“Where were you hiding that?” Theo asked, finally making his way across the room. “It’s like the first and second attempts were done by different people.”

“I was just a bit rusty was all.” Henry said. “Let’s practice a few more times and that should be it.”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

About an hour later, and Henry had somewhat mastered casting dispel. Theo had slowly given him more powerful and faster spells to counter. Henry had aced all of them, of course. Then again this controlled, ideal setting was a far cry from a real life fight. Henry just hoped he’d be able to get things right when it was do or die. He also knew there were a few spells specifically created to go through counters, he’d have to keep a lookout for that.

“That all you need me for?” Theo said. “I really need to get back to my desk.”

“Yeah… ha.” Henry said, catching his breath. “Yeah that should be good, I think I got it.”

Theo quickly departed from the room. Henry could hear the man running back down the hallway. He hoped that the guy wouldn’t get into any trouble with Fargis over this little practice session.

“Can it be my turn now?!” Charles said, positively bouncing with energy.

“Alright kid, come to the center of the room with me and sit down.” Henry said, sitting himself down cross-legged and watching as Charles came scurrying across the room. The kid was energized Henry would give him that. Charles leapt to his knees and came to a skidding stop on the ground. Henry was worried the kid would damage his pants for a moment.

“Look kid, calm down a se-“

“I want to learn an attack spell… and I want to learn how to stop a spell like you did! I want… maybe a low powered zap spell… I mean I’m not that good at this yet… maybe a flash spell….” Charles trailed off.

Henry sighed deeply then snapped his fingers, getting Charles attention. “Look, Charles, magecraft isn’t something you can just pick up in an hour, alright. I was only able to learn that spell so easily because I already knew how to do it.”

“What?” Charles asked.

“I’d forgotten how to since it had been so long. I usually don’t go around starting fights with other mages, since that’s not good for my health. Look, it’s like any trade alright? You can’t expect to be a master blacksmith in a single day, nor a master swordsman, it requires practice and dedication.” Henry said. He glanced at Johnny for a bit and stuck his tongue out at the man, before becoming serious once more and looking back to Charles.

“I want to try and teach you how to sense the flow of mana in this chamber, this will be the easiest place to do it.” Henry said. “You don’t even have a proper supply of mana built up yet, so you won’t be able to channel anything.” Henry said.

“What do you mean?” Charles asked.

“Close your eyes for a moment.” Henry said, before doing the same himself.

Charles obliged, his early enthusiasm turning to wonderment.

“You channel mana from the land itself, you need to build connections to it. You don’t store it in your body, since that would kill you.” Henry said. “It’s why spell craft can be so dangerous. Right?” Henry said. “You can draw mana from places you’ve been before and gain a connection to. Depending on the type of person you are, you can gain access to different types of mana.”
>>
>>2495666

“What kind of person are you Henry?” Charles asked. “A good person I think.”

“Look… that’s not what I… fine.” Henry said, cracking a smile, even though Charles wouldn’t be able to see it if he was following directions.

“The mana in this room, it’s blue as all hell. Blue mana, it’s the stuff of the mind, of oceans, of islands, of the sea. It’s a mana that represents control, you can make some really complicated spells out of it, the room is full of them, all sorts of enchantments. Enchantments are like permanent spells that stick around a while. It’s how the chamber functions as it does.” Henry went on.

“Wow…” Charles said. Henry thought he sounded a bit bored. Although the kid was doing a good job at hiding it.

“Look, try to see the mana flowing in the room, you shouldn’t even have to open your eyes since it’s so strong, but I want you to point to the center of all the mana in the room, it should be the largest amount of it, just feel for a lot of blue. You’ll know it when you feel it.

As Charles’ face scrunched in concentration he began to mumble something, Henry couldn’t quite hear what it was, but it sounded like the kid was trying REALLY hard.

“Look, Charles, don’t try to force it to happen, it’s your first try. Sides what worked for me might not even work for you.” Henry said. “Better trial and error when you want to fling a bolt of lightning eh?” Henry said.

“I…I think it’s there.” Charles finally said, pointing to the brightest glowing rune in the room, a massive piece on the wall directly opposite the doorway they’d come through at the start.

“Not even close.” Henry said, opening his eyes back up, Charles’ eyes were already open. “That’s actually the weakest source of mana in the room, that’s a binding rune, keeps the whole place together.” Henry said. “It IS the most heavily guarded though, so I’ll give you that.”

Charles huffed for a moment, pouting and crossing his arms. “This is impossible.” He muttered.

“Do you think I gave up kid?” Henry said, “We can keep trying if you want or you can give me the floor to do something really incredible, I’ve had this idea in my head for a long time now.” Henry said. “Just never had the time to try it out.”

“No, no I’m not going to give up, not now, not ever.” Charles said. “I need to succeed, I need to learn magic!” The boy said it with a conviction that really surprised Henry. The timid kid was finally coming out of his shell.

Charles once more closed his eyes and began to concentrate, but this time he didn’t force it, he let things flow. A few minutes later and Charles began to wonder if he was doing something wrong, then a flicker of blue crossed his consciousness. He’d seen something.

Then he saw a good deal of blue, flickers and glimmers of it. Not a full picture, not by a long shot. But still, a glimpse into what Henry could see without any effort. Charles began to scan the room, he traced his eyes over the main binding room, and indeed it barely glowed at all, although there were a few bright spots around it. Eventually Charles’ gaze settled on a small set of runes to his right, and he raised his hand up to point at it. The things glowed rarely but when they did it was blinding to him.

“Well, you got very close.” Henry said after a time. “Honestly you did a heck of a lot better than I thought you would.”

“You’re lying, that was the brightest thing in the room!” Charles said.

“Look up.” Henry said plainly, pointing up towards the skylight.

As Charles shifted his closed eyes skywards he was blinded by a MASSIVE amount of blue. His mouth hung agape for a moment. He’d completely forgotten the ceiling was also covered in runes, and that light, it hurt to look at. Charles covered his eyes and turned back towards the floor, the flickering had sent his mind into a tizzy.

“You got a bit overwhelmed there?” Henry asked.

“Am I a mage now?!” Charles asked, bouncing up and down while still sitting on his legs.

“No, you’re not even an apprentice really… not that you haven’t learned anything.” Henry said, being careful not to pop the kid’s bubble too quickly.

“How… how are you not blinded by just looking at it?” Charles asked. “Its… it was so bright, it hurt my eyes… it hurt everything just looking at it.”

“Practice practice practice!” Henry said, lightly slapping Charles on the forehead. “You’ll eventually learn how to control when and how much you see it, just on instinct. Otherwise you wouldn’t be able to do much magic cause you would be blinded by it. This room is probably the easiest place to do this, since it’s such a calm place.” Henry said.

“A controlled environment would be the proper term!” Johnny called over.

“I… I want to learn everything!” Charles said, smiling widely. Henry had just made the kids day.

“One step at a time yeah?”

“I… I finally can learn something, other than just what’s in books.” Charles said, staring at his hands for a moment. “I… thank you Henry.” He finally said. Henry wondered if the kid had ever had someone treat his as a normal kid, rather than royalty. Something about that still seemed off to Henry, but he didn’t know what.

“So what now?” Charles asked.

“I want you to go head to where Johnny is and keep practicing, I want to try out this new idea for a spell I came up with.” Henry said, quickly and unceremoniously shooing Charles away. Charles ran over to where Johnny was and shut his eyes once more. It was like watching a baby walk for the first time.

Henry sighed and stood back up, then grabbed out the newly purchased dagger he had gotten. He REALLY didn’t want to try this out with the new sword, the risk of destroying it due to fucking this spell up was too great. He’d have to make sure he didn’t under or overcook this, although he had a fairly good idea of how he’d pull this off. He’d known bolt for a long time, and this was essentially the same thing, just applied as a short lasting enchantment.

He could probably do this on his hands normally, but that… well that could go fucky even quicker than using it on the dagger. The general idea was that the spell, lightning talons he would call it, would act like a short lived enchantment on his blade. Allowing him to hopefully do a lot of damage. The other plus side would be that it wouldn’t be easily counterable with dispel since it would be applied directly to the weapon itself.

“Are you going to do anything?” Charles asked, eyes still closed. The kid was trying to watch him cast the spell it seemed. Well, nothing for it now.

“Try not to destroy that dagger. I don’t think you’d enjoy purchasing another.” Johnny said, he’d finally finished his work on the new weaponry.

“You know what?” Henry said, before grabbing out the old and blasted dagger he’d been keeping around. “Might as well use this piece of junk now.”

“Isn’t that important to you?” Charles’ asked.

“Not as important as the new equipment is! Now shush!” Henry said, quieting Charles.

Henry quickly pulled out his old busted up slag of a dagger, and got to work conjuring the needed red mana. He’d already tugged on the memory of a trip through the mountains when he was younger to get some more red mana, he might as well put it to use now. He just hoped Gerald would forgive him for this when it was all over.

The metal slag in his hand began to spark and whine with electricity, for a brief moment Henry thought it might work, before the metal became red hot in his hands. Yowling with pain Henry dropped the dagger to the floor before shaking his hands in the air in an attempt to cool them off. He’d just burned his fucking hands, and the dagger was cooling into a pile on the floor. Great, the thing was even MORE useless than it had been before, it wasn’t even recognizable as a dagger anymore. Henry would have to figure a way to scoop it off the floor since he wasn’t going to get it while it was still crackling with energy.

“Amazing show Henry!” Johnny called out, clapping his gauntleted hands together. “Try to not injure yourself next time!”

Henry ran over and quickly swiped up one of the throwing knives from Johnny’s pile. He’d prove that old bag of bones wrong real quick.

“You know what, fuck you Johnny!” Henry said, focusing his energy into the knife as he ran back to the center of the room. He tried to concentrate to make sure that things wouldn’t fuck up this time. A few minutes later, and nothing had happened. Henry had fizzled the spell, the dagger hadn’t even gotten warm. Henry was COMPLETELY embarrassed now. This whole training session had made him look like an utter moron. But such was practicing the magical arts.

Johnny for his part was chuckling to himself. “Of course you wouldn’t be able to use such a complicated spell sir, a bolt is more your speed I figure. I assume you are trying to create that idiocy, that temporary lightning enchantment you babbled about a few months back, correct? Look, Henry, I’m going to stop laughing for a minute, just stop before you injure yourself further, alright?

“S-seriously… fuck off.” Henry replied. He was angry with Johnny and angry at himself, this whole bit had been hugely embarrassing. At least he’d undercooked it this time, instead of overcooking it. He’d be able to try again with the same dagger. He was getting closer to figuring out what he needed to do though. Each time was slowly contributing to his knowledge.

“I’m going to do it this time, I just gotta figure out how much energy to force into the blade…” Henry muttered… wait, not just inside the blade, but around it too? He could maybe… yeah… Henry thought, doing some quick calculations in his head. Focusing the mana directly into the thing overloaded it, but using too little mana had prevented any reaction from occurring. Channeling the mana inside the blade and then slowly shaping it outwards might work a lot better…

Henry calmed himself down, and began to cast the spell once more. He had to get this right, his pride was on the line now, he could still redeem himself! As the energies manifested, for a moment Henry thought he’d have it correct, lightning began to run the length of the dagger. Henry smiled, it was finally working.

“See I told yo-“ Henry said, before stopping himself. Something was very wrong, the lightning was growing instead of staying steady. He felt as if the dagger was drawing more and more magical energy into itself. By the time Henry cut the flow off it was too late, the thing had started to pulse with massive amounts of red mana and more importantly, lightning. Henry quickly threw the thing across the room before ducking to the ground.

“GET DOWN!” Henry screamed, before the dagger exploded in a shower of red hot shrapnel. Henry had just made what was basically a bomb rune due to improper mana allocation. It would’ve made for a great spell if not for the fact he had absolutely no control over it, and he could’ve easily killed himself if anything at all had been different. But the details were a bit muddled due to the fact that he had to avoid burning chunks of metal. The remains of the dagger flew across the room, clunking against the blue magical barriers and falling harmlessly to the floor. After a moment, Henry looked up. Johnny had covered Charles and was protecting him, although the explosion and shrapnel hadn’t quite reached that far.

“You guys alright?… FUCK.” Henry said, dusting a few chunks off himself before they began to burn. “I ALMOST HAD IT THIS TIME, GOD DAMN IT!” Henry yelled, he’d need one more shot, he knew it.\

“Barely!” Johnny called out. “If it’s alright with you me and the boy are going to wait in the doorway as you continue practicing!” Johnny said.

At least he’d finally stopped laughing.

Henry ran over to where Johnny had been sharpening the daggers and grabbed one more. Henry had started up on one of his stubborn streaks now, he HAD to do this, giving up was not something he really knew how to do. It had always been one of his weaknesses.

The mana fizzled out once more. Henry tried again, another fizzle, and again, another fizzle. He had to figure this out….

It finally worked, albeit only a tiny bit, the second throwing dagger sparked to life. Lightning was slowly running its way up and down the blade. Henry smiled. The thing was stable if weak. He’d finally gotten a hang of the spell, he’d need further practice and refinement of course… but maybe if he got good enough at it the need for a blade would be superfluous. Finally he tasted success.

Henry waved the dagger over his head before tossing it at a wall. The second it left his hand the lightning effect died down. Upon hitting the wall the mana barrier bounced it away and it clattered harmlessly to the floor. Interesting, it wasn’t able to hold a charge, still, such an effect would be uncounterable by dispelling magics and most higher level canceling magics. It would make for a fantastic surprise attack, or maybe an extra bit of damage if needed?

“Do you have a moment sir?” Johnny said, the man was now holding a broom and a dust pan. “I want to clean up the mess you’ve made, I refuse to allow you to leave this room the way it is.”

Henry actually had been planning to just leave after he was done, and he did not feel guilty about it. This place was obviously interfering with his magical abilities, there was no other explanation!

By the time Johnny had finished cleaning up their scheduled time in the room was almost concluded. Henry had managed to completely destroy the slag dagger and one of the throwing daggers, he’d learned dispel and sorta learned lightning talons. Overall not a bad time at it.

Henry sighed before sitting down to rest. Even though this room allowed him to channel all the mana he could need the effort was still exhausting. He needed a few minutes of rest.

Charles poked his head back through the doorway. After confirming it was safe the child scurried back across the room and once more skidded to a stop next to Henry.

“Yeah?” Henry asked, exhaustion evident in his voice. He was now drenched in sweat.

“I think you can do it!” Charles said. “Just believe you can!” The boy had a sparkle in his eyes. Henry smiled despite himself, the kid had more faith in him than he ever had. It was really endearing.

“Alright, I’m gonna try one more time.” Henry said, getting up and grabbing the throwing dagger from the ground. He turned around to say something to Charles but the lad had already left the room for safety. So had Johnny now that Henry was looking around.

The spell was casted perfectly, large amounts of lightning arced up and down the blade, and Henry smiled. This would have real use, and he’d probably be able to grant his undead minions the same enchantment on any weapons they had… he still didn’t really want to try it on his own hands of course, he didn’t think he was a good enough mage for that. Through his bluster and ego, he had a fairly good grasp of his own abilities. A realist through and through.

A moment later he charged at the wall and brought the dagger down onto it. The mana shielding protecting the wall actually flickered for a second before rebuffing him. Absolutely amazing, these things weren’t weak in the slightest. He could probably carve through stone with this. A moment later the spell died. It was powerful but ate up a lot of mana… and he was utterly exhausted now. He wouldn’t be able to manifest this spell for too long.

“THAT WAS AMAZING!” Charles said, running back into the room one last time.

“Finally got it down?” Johnny asked, heading back into the room and bundling up their newly bought supplies.
“I… I need something to eat.” Henry said, sinking to his knees and gasping for breath. “But yeah… I did it! TAKE THAT… ha…ha…”

Decisions:
1. Get lunch

1. Say something to Charles

Stupid, pig headed persistence sprinkled with the occasional lie and dirty trick. Get good at it, and you can live a glorious life like mine.

After a few minutes of rest, Henry finally stood back up, his legs felt a bit like jelly, his hands had burns all over them, and he wanted to take a nap. But all in all it’d been a fairly successful session. He just couldn’t make eye contact with Johnny now since god above that’d been embarrassing as all hell. Still he’d learned the spell in an incredible amount of time. He always did have a knack for this stuff.

“Do… do you have any advice Henry, for learning magic I mean?” Charles asked.

“Yeah actually. Stupid, pig headed persistence sprinkled with the occasional lie or dirty trick can get you real far in life. You just need to get good at it, and you will be surviving out here no problem!” Henry said.

At that Johnny planted a hand over his face but said nothing, he didn’t want his speaking privileges revoked today.

“I… isn’t that dishonorable though?” Charles asked. “And what does that have to do with magic?”

Oh sweet summer child…

“Charles… dying is the biggest dishonor you can ever face, anything that keeps you from dying is well worth it…” Henry said, wincing a bit. “Well, almost anything. Sides, magic is a means to prevent yourself from dying, nothing more.” Henry finished. “That’s the way I see it anyhow, and its worked amazingly for me.”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Lunch was good, some bread, some wine, and some corn cooked over a grill and livened up with some local herbs and spices. All in all it was delicious. Henry really wished he could live all his days so idly. Maybe if he came into some more money… ha, right.

The main thing Henry wanted to do was nap, so nap he did. He left Johnny and Charles alone since Charles had wanted to learn from Johnny about how to use that dagger Henry had gifted him. Henry awoke a few hours later to the sound of Charles and Johnny returning. Henry got up, got dressed and stretched. His hands still ached from the burns but otherwise he felt fantastic. He was ready to do SOMETHING but he didn’t know what.

Time Limited Decision: (pick one)
1. Go fishing, you’ve been wanting to do it since forever
(do you take just Johnny or Johnny and Charles?)
2. Get some practice in with your new sword
3. Try to do some reading at the guild hall, maybe Theo would let you?
4. Head over to the church to pray… HAHAHAHA
5. Head to the healer’s abbey to get your hands fixed up, it’ll probably cost a bit this time, no more easy freebies.

Henry got up and began to head towards the door.

“Going somewhere sir?” Johnny asked.

“Yeah, to get my hands looked at.” Henry said, still a tad drowsy. “I don’t want to start my trip out with my hands burnt to shit.”

“Fair enough.” Johnny said, sitting on Henrys bed and staring at the open window and into the sky.

Charles deposited himself into his own bed and quickly fell asleep. The kid was as quick as a bunny until he actually had to do some work. Typical.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The trip to the church was uneventful until Henry made it into the church plaza. People were gathering from all over and pointing into the sky. A few had even begun to recite prayers. Henry turned his gaze skywards and placed a hand on his forehead in an attempt to block out the sun. He managed to catch a few shapes slowly circling overhead. Then those shapes began descending into the holy grounds and towards the tower at the back.

The angels had returned.

Henry sighed. He knew that one he’d met on the boat ride, Brunessa, knew him, and had probably just returned. But he also figured that she would stay inside the tower with the other angels, to rest or whatever the hell they did in there. He knew that was the primary purpose of the angels’ roost, to provide a resting spot. Nobody really knew too much more than that. Well, nobody without direct church connections.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Henry made his way into the healer’s abbey with surprisingly little resistance, especially since the Inquisitors had forgotten to take the symbol they’d given him away. He simply flashed it to the guards and in he went. One of them was yelling loudly about the angels or whatever. Henry didn’t pay him much mind.

Inside the holy grounds were scores of people, all of them church officials and Cathars, running around gathering various supplies, seemingly for the angels. Henry just hoped that there would still be a healer around.

Decision (pick one)
1. Head into the healer’s abbey, you came for one reason and one reason only
2. Go see what all the commotion is about

I mean. We came up with some interesting overcharge ideas I think.

Like. If we face something like a big old troll or giant slime or acidic jelly etc. we can stick a sword in it and overload it. Or overload a throwing knife and then chuck it at it. Maybe just get some scrap chunks of metal even and just overload & throw those.

Progressing through failure!
>>
>>2499478
Also since we are lightning + undead specced, maybe later we can make an undead and thread wire through it''s muscles, then put a lower level amount of lightning into it to improve it's speed, strength, and co-ordination if we decide to go a more summons style route.

The inside of the healer’s abbey was the same as it had always been, a few windows, some decorations on the walls, and the church’s holiest symbol, the all seeing eye, decorating the center of the floor as well and the ceiling. All around a fairly nice lobby, Henry rated it an eight out of ten.

The healer at the front desk was the same one who’d healed Henry the prior day, it was Rosa. Upon seeing Henry she raised an eyebrow and made a nervous smile. She was reading what looked to be a copy of the book of Heroes, one of the four holy books of the church. Henry wondered if she was trying to give herself courage or some shit.

Rosa coughed politely and continued to stare, she looked slightly uncomfortable in all honesty. Henry supposed she didn’t get too many repeat customers. She brushed aside a lock of red hair and then finally spoke up

“Did you already manage to injure yourself again?” She asked.

Decision:

1. “Just wanted to stop by and say hello… yes I got injured again.”
2. “A man can’t enjoy your company?”
3. “Burnt my hands to all shit practicing some spellcraft, how much will it run me?”
4. “I need some healing, what are your prices?”
5. “You’re not running out to go see the angels?”

“No….” Henry said, unable to hold eye contact. It took him a moment before he huffed and showed his burnt hands to the healer. “Yes…”

“How did you… I don’t want to –“ She started

“I was practicing some spellcraft… look, how much will it run me?” Henry asked.

“Two silver coins I’d say, and don’t quibble over the price, all the other healers are taking the day to pray in the chapel.”

“Why is that?” Henry asked.

“To pray for all the newly departed souls departing from the tree, and for the angel’s return.” Rosa replied. “I wished to join them… I mean uh… do you have the coins or no?”

“Yes, fine.” Henry said, handing the coins over, he hated having to suffer for a run of bad luck. He wasn’t bad at spellcraft… the mage chamber had been shoddy… and Vive must’ve cast some sort of curse on him… yeah that’s what must’ve happened.

Rosa led Henry into one of the back rooms, a small chamber with some cabinets, a single comfortable looking seat, and a sink. Rosa quickly got to work after Henry sat down.

“I hope this won’t be a frequent occurrence… I don’t like seeing people hurt due to stupid mistakes… even people as awful as you.” She said, before placing a hand over her mouth. “I… uh…” She stammered. The woman looked like she was more embarrassed than even Henry was.

“Pfft, that ain’t the worst thing anyone’s ever called me.” Henry said. “Not by a longshot.”

“I….” Rosa said, before quickly ignoring it and starting the healing spell, channeling white mana into her hands.

“Least I managed to throw the dagger I was imbuing before it exploded! Might be able to make bomb runes on the fly.” Henry said, trying to salvage the situation.

Rosa’s look of terror quickly cemented the fact that Henry had firmly placed his foot into his mouth.

“Don’t you give me that look now. I want to salvage some dignity from this.” Henry said, as he felt the burns on his hands begin to recede. Rosa didn’t respond, Henry kept going. “Look, even managed to get some new ideas for spells, so it wasn’t even a wash…” Henry continued. As the book of journeys says, every failed journey is a chance to learn.” Henry of course hated that book more than the others, the idea that his path was preordained… he refused to believe that. Rosa still didn’t respond. At that point Henry noticed the woman’s face was scrunched in concentration. The spell couldn’t have been that hard could it? After the pain had fully receded, Rosa stopped the spell, the white glow disappearing from her hands.

“I’m sorry… I just couldn’t hear you.” Rosa said. “I was too busy trying to correct your mistake… blast…” She said. “I… I can say things without thinking them through… I don’t mean harm by it…”

Henry chuckled a bit, further flustering the woman. “I can think of worse flaws. So why aren’t you praying with the others for the angel’s return? You sound like you’d rather be there…” Henry said, trailing off when Rosa looked to the floor.

“With all due respect… it’s really none of your concern.” Rosa said. The woman was trying to be as polite as possible. “I… I need some time to gather my thoughts and pack my things… I… I guess I’ll see you at the north gate at sunrise then… with those inquisitors.”

It was at that point that Henry realized he’d never actually asked the inquisitors where or when they’d meet. Well Rosa had just averted that disaster.

“Look, I could use a thank you.” Henry said.

“… What?” Rosa said. “For what? Your lovely presence?”

“For saving lives.” Henry replied.

“You mean helping the Inquisitors save lives? Ha, I doubt you did anything of importance.”

“Without my help your sisters would have a lot more souls to be praying for. I’d appreciate it if you backed off.”

Rosa sighed then placed her hands to her face and rubbed it. “Just… go…”

Henry slowly got up from his seat, and left without a word. He actually felt a heck of a lot better now, it was good to know there were far WORSE fuck ups than himself. I mean, yes, he’d botched his spells. Really, only that dispel incantation was REALLY embarrassing. The lightning sword… thing… lightning talons, yeah that was a cool name, that had gone fantastic all things considered. He’d literally learned it in an afternoon. I mean, how many other mages could do that? Yeah.. YEAH!

Henry continued to inflate his own ego as he walked back to the inn near the north gate. Speaking of which, he’d had a really short walk tomorrow! Good work Henry! He’d literally saved a whole fucking city! Like … a thousand people, maybe two thousand. Maybe he really was cut out for this whole heroics thing… well… maybe just the getting paid part. Henry always liked that.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The day was spent playing cards with Johnny and Charles. Johnny of course did fantastically. Henry didn’t feel too bad, it was like losing against several people, since Johnny had lifetimes worth of practice.

Charles didn’t know what he was doing, but the kid seemed like he was enjoying things thoroughly. Henry finally noticed something he hadn’t before. The kid was still uneasy, it was a bit hard to tell, but the kid looked a tad worried. Henry didn’t blame him, one wrong move and this whole charade would come crashing down. They’d be heading out of this nice, walled city, into Yorkshire province, and the dangers of the road would be a bit more severe further out from the capital.

As long as they weren’t stupid enough to travel at night, they’d be fine.
