>”Yes.”
>Tie her hands, gag and blindfold her.

You look at the blonde woman before you, your recently acquired runeblade still held to her throat. She holds herself perfectly still and poised. If the sword bothers her at all, she doesn’t show it. The censer dangles loosely from one hand, wisps of orange smoke still billowing up all around you. Her question hangs in the air but you see no harm in acknowledging it.
“God set the star in motion. I simply brought it down.”
You reach for her and spin her around in order to tie her up. It wouldn’t do to have her escape. The cord is still bloodstained from its last occupant but you have neither the time nor the inclination to do anything about that.

“I thought it was you,” Dr Erunt says, not resisting as you tie her hands behind her back. “Didn’t make sense for anyone else.”
And with that said, she twists in your grasp! She doesn’t break your grip but instead every joint in her body seems to dislocate all at once! Her hands twist out of yours, leaving flayed skin behind in your gauntleted hands. And all of this just so that she could turn and face you.

The stolen runesword pierces her neck, claiming its second life by your hand. Blood spills ceaselessly onto the floorboards and as the doctor staggers away, she purses her ruined lips and spits. You don’t have time to dodge but you don’t need to. A single broken tooth shoots through the air beside you, missing you by more than a foot.

The dying Dr Erunt lunges for you, her arms spread wide as if to catch you in an embrace. You don’t know her purpose but you know enough to not want {i]any of it. You kick her in the stomach and send her to the ground before she can get close.
She gurgles incoherently on the ground in a pool of frothing blood. Wait, frothing? You take a step back as it begins to foam with a loud fizzing sound. The doctor’s entire body seems to dissolve from the inside out, foaming blood eating through her skin and clothes in at least a dozen places. The floor beneath her gives way a moment later, the gooey remnants of Dr Erunt’s body eating straight through the floorboards and raining down the inside of the tower below.

If that’s what it can do to wood, you have no desire to learn what would have happened to you had she succeeded in grabbing hold of you in her final moments.

Your companions are still gaping. The entire desperate combat took place in just a few seconds. And for a drawn out awful moment, the workshop is silent save for the bubbling of the doctor’s blood from where it had splattered further across the floor, upon the wall and across the smoking censer that she had dropped as she had died.
It happens before you even realise the import of it all. The holed metal sphere collapses on itself, the blood decaying the steel. The smoke goes out.

And with a shriek, the verminous beast still squatting above the opened roof descends upon you all! Its barbed tail slams down onto the workshop’s floor where the doctor had been standing just a few seconds ago, rocking the entire room and sending you staggering back. Claws scrabble along the edge of the opened roof as the creature barges into it, trying to squeeze its bulk through the hole!

>Unveil the lamp-post once more! You must do it, no matter how much it may hurt!

>Charge its tail while its still down here and slice it off!

>You cannot defend this sacred place. When this creature falls, another will just descend from the sky and take its place. There are at least several dozen more! You need to retreat back down the stairwell of the tower.

“Everyone back! Get down the stairs! Out! Out!”
As much as it pains you to admit, you cannot defend this place. The woman who you were depending on to use as a hostage has just more or less dissolved in your arms. The Workshop forces still mass on the bridge outside and their creatures still fill the sky. And though this may very well be the holiest place left in all the world, you must abandon it.

Your shout spurs the shocked redcloaks into action, one of them throwing the door open as you all start to flee. You’re the last one out, dodging the fumus’ scything tail all the while. You cast one look back at the sacred machines before slamming the door shut once more. You’ll be back. You know not when or how, just that you will. Until then you’ll just have to trust the workshop’s runes to keep it unsullied.

Abe joins you as you run down the stairs behind everyone else. He’s holding his left arm, from which you can see a trickle of blood.

“What happened to you?”

“It’s nothing,” he says, grimacing. “That doctor’s tooth hit me in the arm. It just split the skin, I’ve already pulled it out.”

“I’ll look at it later when I have time,” you say as you gallop down the stairs three at a time. Fortunately they at least seem designed for Third Men. The others are ahead of you, racing down towards the bottom floor of the hollow tower.

“I’m not the one who’s hurting, am I?”
Abe lands a hand on your shoulder as he keeps up with you on your descent. He’s still shouting.
“You used the lamp!”

“Yes! And I saved everyone’s lives because of it!”

“How are your hands under those gauntlets? How far do the burns go now?”

That’s not a question you can answer. In truth, you’ve been avoiding it yourself. You’re not sure if you want to know.
“That’s unimportant. I can still hold a sword.”

“Yes...and your hands were shaking before. Look Orion, this isn’t over. We’re going to have to fight our way out of here.”

“What’s new?”

“Just promise me you’ll be alright. Don’t go charging in at the front like you always do.”

“I have to, Abe. If I don’t then someone else will and their blood will be on my hands. Someone has to do it.”

“But it doesn’t have to always be you!”

The two of you reach the bottom, the large doors to the outside looming before you. The redcloaks are scattered around the empty room, most of them readying their rifles. Beatrice is off to the side away from all of them, her bloodstained mouth set in a grim line as she trains her pistol on the doors. Savina’s corpse is still lying spread-eagled in the middle of it all, the stone floor around her etched by drops of the doctor’s fallen blood.

Alex quickly joins the two of you, her rifle held at the ready.
“Here we are,” she says. “What the fuck happened to the doctor?”

“I don’t know. She must have been ready to die.”
But even that doesn’t seem right to you. Surely she could have died for more than a pool of acid and a spat out tooth? Wasn’t she supposed to be someone important? Why was she up on the roof in the first place?

Alex still has more questions however. She takes a look back at the workshop and though she hides it well, you can see her fear.
“What are we going to do now? They’re everywhere.”

The city is your enemy.

Before you can answer, the doors shake as something crashes into them! The next impact is just a moment after that and it nearly rattles them off their hinges. The redcloaks stumble back in a widening semi-circle but keep their rifles high.
You’ve only got seconds, if even that, before those doors fall and the Workshop men on the bridge outside swarm in.

>Be ready to ambush the first ones and then charge out! Defending is useless here, you just need to fight your way out.

You motion for everyone to split up into three groups. A few redcloaks will stay before the door with their rifles but the rest of you all will split into two groups at either side of the shuddering doors. Just defending isn’t going to be enough, there’s too damn many of them. Your only option is to fight your way out once more!
What forces had you seen on the bridge again? The things that the doctor had called ‘Fumus’ were in the sky but the bridge had just been guards and a collection of strange creatures you couldn’t recognise from the top of the tower. You’ll wait for them to barge in, catch them in a pincer and then push a counter-attack!

You sheath the bloody sword and, ignoring the scorching pain still running up your arms, raise the trophy you took from the corpse of the Iron Duke. The first men to step past the threshold, you’ll just swing it out and-

The doors burst off their hinges and explode into a cloud of splinters as something far larger than a man leaps through the doorway! It hits the ground skidding and sending the redcloaks diving for cover as it drifts to a halt in the very center of the room. You swing your staff as it passes you but your strike bounces off the monster’s tough underbelly.
You turn to face the thing that is now behind you all and recoil instinctively. It may be the strangest beast you’ve seen yet!

The four-legged thing is large and squat like a toad, taller than a man and wider and longer than five. You see no eyes or mouth or indeed any features beyond a set of enormous nostrils set into its thick and warty skin. But what truly draws the eye is its back. It’s leathery skin has split open all along its back, revealing an expanse of softer gray flesh from which sprout hundreds and hundreds of flailing human arms. Their hands constantly reach for the sky, fingers dancing across each other in nonsensical incoherence.
It’s nostrils flare and it screams through them with the voice of a man, billowing clouds of vapour issuing forth from whatever inconceivable biology lies within such a blasphemy.

“The Engine’s breached! Charge!”

A squad of wood-armoured men charge in through the doorway behind you, swords and thorny whips raised high. No gunshots meet them, the monster having scattered the firing line with its clumsy charge.

All at once, you are pressed on two sides at once. What shall you do?

>Hold back the guards! Beatrice and Abe can handle the creature, Alex and the redcloaks shall be with you.

>Slay the beast behind you, don’t let it charge a second time! The others can keep holding the door.

“You handle them!,” you bellow, sprinting back across the room and pulling one of the redcloaks away from the monster. “I’ll deal with this!”

The creature takes a single step back, its multitude of human hands waving back and forth in a neverending unrhythm. It huffs as it squares itself up with you and though you hear gunshots behind you, you don’t dare take your eyes off it for a second.
One misshapen stump of a foot, clawless and with graspers that more resemble the roots of a tree than anything of an animal, paws at the ground as it readies to charge you.

You slowly pace around the beast, ready to dodge at a moment’s notice. If you can just bait its charge, you might be able to get it to run right down into the doorway and into the guardsmen! As monstrous as it looks, this is just a dumb beast after all. Why should you fight it on its own terms?

You see the monster tense up, the arms sprouting from its back suddenly going still.

“Get out of the way! Incoming!”
You can only hope the redcloaks behind you figure out what you’re trying to do in time!

And as you shout, the creature lunges!

You run to the side as the monster pursues you, watching redcloaks jump out of the way as you point it successfully at the Tangle soldiers in the doorway! Unfortunately you aren’t quite quick enough to get out of the way at the same time.

It barrels into you, slamming you up and along its squat body. Your body aching with a sudden and incredible pain, you almost manage to grab hold of one of its nostrils but your traitorous fingers, still freshly burned, give way!
The beast knocks you up and you roll over the top of it right into the forest of arms sprouting from its back. You’re in the midst of them all, your vision blurred with blood and scrabbling limbs!

Their incoherent and witless motions still when you touch them, the arms clustered around you grabbing hold of you instead with every possible grip and hold that they can muster. Your cries are instantly muffled as hands close over your mouth, your eyes, your nose…

You can’t breathe. The blind movements of the arms are suffocating you.

At least you can still hear the muffled screams of the Tangle guards. The beast hit them just as you planned. That is little comfort to you, buried beneath a morass of hands. You reach inward for your Flame Internal. You don’t have time for subtlety!

You fall from the back of the beast, burning your way through the clutches of the arms and hit the ground rolling. You look up just in time to see the monster rearing up in front of you! You get to your feet and leap out of the way just in time for a stumpy leg to crash down upon where your head had just been.

The thing just keeps screaming, cold vapor continually spraying out from its oversized nostrils. What had the Tangle men called this thing? An ‘Engine’?. Whatever it is, it’s currently blocking the doorway quite effectively.
Your companions open fire, their bullets stinging the creature’s thick hide and forcing it back. And as for you, you can feel the fire surrounding you feeding back into your Flame Internal and filling you with holy strength.

>Benediction of Relief

The flames around you are lit with white for just a moment as you store a Benediction of Relief and after a moment’s thought, immediately use it. The power you call upon mends your body a small amount and more importantly, blesses you going forward.

Your companions are still firing on the creature in the doorway, stinging it and forcing it to cringe back. You’re still not sure what it is but it still seems to fear the gun, even if isn’t slain by it. Several wood-armoured corpses lie at its feet, crushed by its mad rampage.
You can hear a panicked hubbub coming from behind it as the remaining Tangle guardsmen readjust themselves but then, a voice that rises higher than the rest.

“Witch Engine primed! Get down!”

A what engine?
The monster stills itself, even as bullets poke holes into its flesh and spill foul-smelling ichor in puddles around it. The flailing arms on its back continue their perpetual dance and…

You see something familiar amidst the chaos of limbs. Witch-sign.

A pair of hands clasp together semi-randomly into a witch-sign you’ve seen before. A grotesque symbol of putrefaction, one that sloughs flesh from bone like oil off water. But such a curse requires a lot of repetition to properly master to any great degree-
And to your horror, you see hand after hand lock together into identical positions. You had thought the mouthless beast without a voice but you had been wrong. The names of the Old Powers require no tongue to speak.

You have but seconds before the witch-sign is complete!

>Sear the hands from its back with an Immolate!

As you stare at the blasphemy in horrified fascination, you notice that the arms you’d burned with your fiery escape are hanging limply amidst the crowd. They alone do not join in the unsung chorus. And through that, you see a way to escape this monstrosity.

Running forward you let the flame within you build higher and higher, borrowing from the fire swirling around your body as you let the fire build higher and higher before, just as the last few hands are slapping into position, you thrust out your palm and let the fire spray out in a wide torrent that engulfs the Witch Engine!

I've already been quite some time ago. I know what's wrong with me.

>5, 3, 5

The fire scorches the Witch Engine’s back clean, leaving only a spasming mess where the garden of hands had once been. The Engine itself squeals and charges once more!

But this time, you’re all ready for it. It’s a shuddering mess of a thing now, all previous pretences towards power and grace gone for the sake of a desperate charge. One of Beatrice’s shots goes right up to its nostrils, the muffled detonation within sending the Witch Engine to the ground before it even reaches you. By the time it’s slid to a halt at your feet, you’ve thrown the staff aside and drawn forth the runesword once more.

The thin blade makes short work of the monster’s thick skin and you slice the Engine’s underbelly open from front to back. Blood and black ichor spill out in waves along with a hodgepodge of organs uncomfortably similar to those you’d find in a human, only all the wrong sizes and in all the wrong places. And then finally, after it had been bled of its innards, the last yard or so of your continued slice unveils only tons of moist earth spilling forth from some concealed bladder within the beast.
The soil mixes with the offal in a most unpleasant manner.

“Oh fuck,” you hear Beatrice whisper, the gravel in her voice making it louder than it should have been.

You don’t have time to ask her about it however for though the Engine has fallen, this battle is far from over! Out beyond the broken doorway is the bridge back towards the Senate Hall and across the bridge are Tangle guardsmen and mixed in with them...three more Witch Engines.

“Guns!,” you hear Abe bellow behind you, “Rifles up and ready! Don’t fire until they get close! Don’t fire when anyone else is out in front! Get ready!”

This isn’t going to be easy. But when has anything? You chose the wrong path for that.

The bridge is an excellent spot for a firing line and one that the redcloaks make good use of. The guardsmen can’t cross without running into a rifle bullet. There are no windows elsewhere in the tower save at the very top, no extra entrances, no ways to get around and flank. If they want to come in, they’re going to have to get in through the door. And if they want to walk through that door, they better be able to eat shot. Even the three Witch Engines look loathe to approach, though to ascribe any sort of emotion or intent to those blasphemies may be a mistake.

They don’t even have any of those rolling barricades that the Magisterial forces had. Without the intervention of witch-sign, it seems impossible for them to halt your slow advance to freedom.

But at least one of the Thorn’s men apparently thought otherwise. Emerging from behind the defensive flank of one of the wildly gesticulating Witch Engines, you see a figure with a long green plume on his helmet throw something down the bridge. The little wooden ball bounces across the bridge before rolling straight through the door.
Acting on instinct you lunge for it as quickly as you can and kick it back outside!

Your suspicion was well-founded as just a moment later, the ball erupts into a spray of lashing vines tipped with inch-long thorns. And even though you had kicked it out of range of hurting any redcloaks, the resulting entanglement is blocking all your views of the bridge beyond!
“Clear it off!,” you shout, stepping forward to attack the sudden growth. But even as you do so, you see another vine lash forward from around the entanglement, one that came from further back!

It misses you but strikes the edge of the doorframe and wraps itself around part of the door still left hanging on its hinges. And before you know it, the green-plumed man is swinging around the side of the bridge, dangling above the teeming cityscape by only his living whip whose other end was the vine you just saw.
He lands on the bridge behind you with his sword drawn, right next to the redcloaks!

He doesn’t get a single strike in however, not before you barrel straight into him and push him against the side of the bridge! It’s sword against staff as the two of you briefly struggle, the man narrowly avoiding taking your head off with well-aimed strike as you pummel him in the gut. Your role in this battle is to keep the rifleman safe! And that means stopping him and anyone else that might try such nonsense. For this sake, you cannot go far enough.

You give the plumed officer a hit around the head and while his helmet absorbs most of it, it sends him staggering back far enough that you can raise a hand at the thrashing blockage. A moment later, it is wreathed in holy flame!

You burn it away, leaving the field clear for the rifleman once more but how thoroughly do you do it? The flame you are spraying can become an obstacle to them in itself, after all.

You burn the artificial vines to ash, incinerating the growth and cowing the men advancing behind it. And with it’s destruction, all your companions are free to open fire once more. You see the man with the plume stumble back to behind cover, bleeding from one arm.

That doesn’t seem to dissuade him however because he’s back up a moment later, raising an arm and pointing back at your forces. You don’t hear what he’s shouting but it seems to have been effective in rallying the flagging troops.
The guardsmen rush forward once more into the firing line!

The renewed Thorn offensive initially results in little more than a few more wood-armoured corpses littering the bridge but eventually, at significant cost to their own numbers, they have broken the firing line and forced the redcloaks into a melee!
It’s not much of one since behind the desperately defending redcloaks, the most effective part of the firing line is still very much unmolested.

Beatrice fires another shot, blowing a hole straight through a woman’s neck as she was about to impale a downed redcloak. Another gunman might find this situation a dangerous one to be shooting so quickly into but Beatrice knows that her bullets are guided by a divine hand.
And failing that, they were guided by her hand and it was a damn fucking good one.

The gunpowder was her communion with God, in a way, or it would be if she believed God would ever have her or if God hadn’t been murdered decades ago. It’s not something that would have ever been freely given to her. So she had taken it instead. She was filled with holy flame and it didn’t matter what the flame thought about it.

She did care what people thought about it however, no matter how often she told herself that she didn’t. Why was she fighting to protect these idiots? Not ten minutes ago, they had all scorned her! Even Orion couldn’t have let her pass without it and she had really thought that that had been past him. And yet they’re all too happy to accept her help now, aren’t they? They’re happy to let her fight for them, die for them but they won’t give her even the single barest shred of respect as a person in return.
But maybe that is just everything she deserves.

That last thought just makes her angrier and she takes it out on the soldiers of the Workshop. The anger joins the chaotic mixture of everything else currently mixing within her breast, from her horrified revelation of just what the Witch Engines were to leftover bitterness for Dr Erunt and everything else she and the Workshop stood for.

Sure, they had saved her life! Probably nobody else could have done what they did, nobody else could have brought her back from the gunpowder brink. But for everything else they did to her while she was in their care...well, if they wanted gratitude they could find it in the barrel of her gun. That Erunt bitch was lucky that it had been Orion to get their hands on her. It could have been so much worse than mere death.

Beatrice frowned, or more accurately, deepened her already existing frown and fired off another shot at one of the Witch Engines looming in the distance at the other end of the bridge. She didn’t trust what they were doing over there. And while she might feel sorrow for those they used to be and horror at the idea of how close she may have come to being one of them, they deserved only the mercy of death now.

The other rifles may have been silenced for now, with Abe and Alex and the others all focussed on not being killed by the surviving guardsmen but Beatrice could damn well near fulfill that role all by herself. She never had to reload and each shot was unerring and explosive. And it all it had cost her was her entire life.

She wished she could have found it in her to care about any of the human lives meeting their end at the end of her pistol today. Between all the fighting and the chaos, so many had died already and that’s not even taking the starfall into account. That could be called her fault too. But that was the thing about human lives really, they were human. And Beatrice had to work to care for humans, she had to put effort in. She had to invest and she had done so for Orion and Abe and even fucking Alex, even if she had just hit her not that long ago.
But without that conscious effort, there was nothing. She could look into the eyes of a stranger and see absolutely nothing of herself in them. That was just how it was to be a witch. And every uncaring death at her hands was just another painful reminder of what she really is. Every time she felt bad for the plight of a ghoul or even for those godawful Witch Engines while thinking nothing of the men and women before her.

She had felt more natural empathy for that magistrate brat than she had for any of the townsfolk back in Sacrament whom she had fought so often to protect. That didn’t make her feel very good but that was nothing unusual. Beatrice very rarely felt good about anything.

You didn’t have to be a witch to kill, though. Orion, safeguard of the light and protector of humanity, kills humans just as easily and naturally as she does. Oh it pains him, she can tell, but when the moment is there he doesn’t think. He only acts. And he can do that because of his purpose. His holiness. He must know that all else is insignificant in the face of his quest.
Beatrice can kill because she is so unholy. Orion can kill because he is so much holier than everyone else.

>Witch on Witch Violence: Beatrice takes a few shots at one of the Witch Engines, reducing her own result by -2 to give the next Engine a -2 to their upcoming roll.

Beatrice’ next few shots peppered small holes into the foremost Witch Engine’s skin, despite the fact that the skin of an Engine’s underbelly and side was specifically grown thick and fire-resistant to make up for the inherently vulnerable growth in its back and core. It reared up and squealed, the hundreds of arms covering its back gesticulating faster and faster as the Engine attempted to, through the brute force approach of constantly writhing hands, defend itself through witch-sign.

It didn’t take long for one to click, a single point of order in its garden of chaos. A single unsounded voicing of a name that can only be seen, never heard. And around the single witch-sign, order spread as the other witless arms focussed on it and replicated it.

The link between a former human and the Old Powers of the Earth was, in a perverse sense, a sacred thing. It can only be made through the knowing permission of that human and with the consent of the dead gods that grasped for them so greedily. It is the willing suborning of the light to the dark. It’s not something you can brew in a bottle or breed into a beast.
There is, and always will be, just one source of witchcraft and that is witches. Even things that must have used to have been them.

The curse is signed into the world and then empowered by a hundred of other hands. What the Engine lacked in intent or knowledge it made up for in power.

To the redcloaks upon the bridge, it felt as if a cold wind was blowing even as the air was still. A chill rose up upon the bridge and settled deep upon them, a darkening shade that threatens to chill flesh and to cause gunpowder to fail to ignite.

Beatrice, of course, never stops firing and the Engine slumps over a moment later as a bullet finally strikes true through the nostril and into whatever hideous organ powers it.

Abe shakes the chill off of himself as best as he is able, his rifle lying uselessly spit in half on the ground beside him. He had had to use it to defend himself against one of the Tangle men and it hadn’t gone well. He has his long club in hand now and is laying about as best as he can, trying to clear a space for some of other redcloaks to resume shooting.

Alex falls to the ground beside him, forced to the ground by a guard. His weapon gone, he’s trying to strangle her instead. She scrabbles and kicks but against his living armour, it is to no avail!

Abe grabs hold of his helmet and, unable to find a a way to pull him off, settles for jamming his truncheon straight into the wide eye-slit. He curses and lashes out but with his grip broken, Abe lifts him bodily off the redcloak and throws him over the side of the bridge!

“Shit,” Alex pants as she climbs to her feet. “Where’s my rifle gone? Oh, and thanks!”

“Nothing to worry about,” Abe grunts. “And it’s by your feet! I’ll keep you clear, you keep shooting!”

“It’s so cold and-wait, are you doing alright? You’re still bleeding from that thing in your arm.”

The wound is small, almost that of a pinprick but she is right. It is still stained fresh with a small amount of blood.
“Must have torn it open just then,” he tells her. It’s almost not a lie. In truth, it hasn’t stopped hurting. But Abe is good with pain. It is, ultimately, what he deserves.

And he couldn’t possibly ask anyone to help him with it in the middle of such an important battle! He isn’t worth that much.

“We really need to stop picking fights on bridges,” Abe pants, bringing his truncheon down hard upon the helm of a woman who had been knocked to her knees.

Alex shoots another in the leg as she motions the other redcloaks forward. Abe hadn’t been able to see much in the chaos of it all but it at least seemed like they were gaining ground. At what cost, he wasn’t yet sure.
“It’s good for the guns!”
She’s shouting and wild-eyed, riding high off adrenaline and probably little else.

With enough space cleared out by Abe, Orion and Beatrice, the rifles are clearing the bridge once more. The air hangs thick with gunsmoke as members of the Thorn squadron fall like puppets with their strings cut. It had been brave of them, Abe supposed, to rush them like they had. But it had also been exceptionally foolish. But as he fought, he kept spotting some of them looking to the skies in confusion at the screeching horde of fumus.
Had they been expecting Dr Erunt to summon the creatures down to cut them off? After all, they hardly knew about her death. Is that what their plan had been this whole time?

Be as it might, he couldn’t quite find it in himself to feel bad for them. Nor should he be feeling so over-confident! What had he done to deserve that? No, there’s a long way to go yet and he should just keep his mind on the job in front of him. Everything else is meaningless.

Until the Collective Effort ends. The Witch Engine in question has already died, Beatrice shot it to death.

Unknown. It's very small and shallow but it doesn't stop bleeding as quickly as it should. Abe's a Third Man, a scratch that small should have scabbed by now. If this isn't selected, he will seek help for it after everything has calmed down.

Abe throws himself into his self-given task of keeping Alex safe. If he can just keep those still with rifles on their feet and firing, they’ll win. And if they win, Beatrice will keep on living. Orion will be one step closer to finishing his quest. The sun will return to the world. The stopped clock will start. Humanity will survive.

Against all of that, how much could Abraham, former barkeep, coward, liar and murderer of Adelaide and Anne, possibly matter? Abe had never considered himself an educated man but even he knew how to solve an equation that simple.

As the fight continued, Abe found himself wishing they’d just give up. Surely they can see that it’s useless. Better for them to just surrender than to keep up this pointless slau-

“It’s primed, it’s primed! Get back! Get out of the way!”

One of the Witch Engines suddenly pounces forward, bowling guardsmen out of the way as it rushes down the bridge towards the redcloaks! And as it runs, its arms are locking into position one after the other, completing witch-sign after witch-sign.

“Run!”
That was Orion shouting and he sounded afraid. But it wasn’t for himself. Mere danger to Orion’s own body would never make him sound so terrified.
“All of you! Get away from that thing! Back to the tower! Now! Please!

The Engine completed the witch-sign and all around it, the guardsmen fell over. They just collapsed and went limp, wooden suits of armour now containing nothing more than person shaped piles of dissociated meat and bone. The human body undone at the seams.
And it continues out from the Engine, a ripple in the fabric of the world. And wherever it touches, people die.
The Thorn Captain clutches helplessly at the Engine’s side as he topples over. His helmet falls off as he does and what sprays across the stone tiles is nothing more than mince.

The redcloaks had retreated of course. But had they done so enough?

The bridge is engulfed in death and standing in the midst of it all, the two remaining Witch Engines. They are as witless as ever but their almost-motionless forms lend them a sudden air of deliberate malice that they couldn’t possibly possess. Hands wave in the air without meaning.

The redcloaks cower back near the start of the bridge, clustered around the tower. Thanks to Orion’s warning, they outran the witch-sign that was intended to have killed each and every one of them. But did they all make it out?
Alex is too shocked to even try a headcount. In truth, she fears what she may find.

How many of the corpses littering the bridge bear the red tokens of faith? Who is yet alive and who is...otherwise?

Alex is broken out of her stupefaction by the sight of one of the corpses left on the bridge standing up. It’s Beatrice, the diminutive witch standing alone amidst the errant flesh. She hadn’t been able to get to safety. She hadn’t been quick enough. But the witch-sign, that most efficient slayer of humanity, had passed over her to no effect. It had come to kill the children of light and when it had found her there had been nothing to take.

The closest Witch Engine padded slowly towards the tame witch. She just raised her gun in response and screamed.
“Motherfucker!”
She shot it in the face and made it rear back, arms writhing in indescribable sigils.

That warcry, despite its crudity, was enough to snap Alex out of her small fugue. She raised her rifle and, very carefully not looking back to see just how many redcloaks were behind her, yelled wordlessly and charged forward to help the witch drive the Engines from the bridge!

Alex’s rifle might not have quite the same impact as Beatrice’s flaming shots but with the redcloaks behind her, their volley makes the foremost Engine scream. Little pockmarks are dug through its flesh all across its body even as it desperately attempts another random witch-sign.

Having not yet found another old name to defile the world with, it settles for simply trying to trample Beatrice to death while the arms on its back continue randomly twisting into new shapes with one another. Beatrice dodges the first stomp but then trips over a fallen soldier, falling to the ground as the Engine attempts to simply walk straight over her!

Alex shoots it, pumping bullet after bullet into the closest thing it has for a face as she walks forward. Much of the days events are already forgotten in her mind, replaced with the image before her. With the idea that had she just been a little unluckier, if she had not had Abe to pull her away, if she had been in Beatrice’s position on the bridge, this thing could have undone her flesh from itself without even meaning it. Murder without intent. Dumb animal occult, achieved through chance and stupidity.
For some reason that hits Alex harder than a hundred men trying to kill her would have done. Men kill men. Witches kill men. Men kill witches. At least they all mean it when they do it!

>Before we move to the final action of this Collective Effort, the Fourth Witch Engine with the +3 to its rolls, a modifier may be applied to Alexandra’s score here.

The Witch Engine looming over Beatrice shook and shuddered in the face of the redcloak’s gunfire and then quietly and unceremoniously, slumped down in front of her. The transition from life to death had been almost unnoticeable. The only surefire way to notice was that the waving hands went limp and lay down in neat rows across its back.

The beast was dead!

You watch from the back, still holding one of the redcloaks over your back. When you had recognise just what sign the walking blasphemy had been performing, you’d been gripped with horror. You had thrown some of the redcloaks ahead of you, desperate to avoid a martyr for your cause.
But you had done it. Somehow nobody had died for your sake.’

Not yet.

One day it will happen. It has happened before and it will happen again. You knew that when you set the star in motion. But maybe it won’t be today.

You stride forward, just in time to see the final Witch Engine lumber forward from where it had been sitting in the back. And as it walks, bullets gouging holes in its flesh, it makes witch-sign. You know this one too. You had last seen it in Augustine, where an imp had attempted to perform it upon you and Beatrice. You had it stopped then. You don’t stop it now.

The hands slam into place and all around the Engine, the abandoned flesh that were once people begin to curl and bubble. Blood rises into the air all around it and swirls into frozen shapes. It drains every corpse dry. The other Witch Engine’s massacre of its own squadron had only strengthened this final witch-sign. And for just a moment, the Witch Engine is surrounded by an orbiting constellation of gore that used to be its minders.

And then the moment passes and the air is filled with red as the creature flings it at all you, a volley of bloody spears that turn into a flaying wind as it roars down the bridge towards you!

I'm wondering about a quirk of this resolution system. Is sacrificing people of its side to give itself bonuses really a cost to the "enemy AI", if those are taken from the limitless supply of Dis's population?

Another question I have is, who the hell is commanding those Engines and whether we can gut them like a fish.

I'll be perfectly honest. Enemies in Collective Effort rolls have never actually worked by the same rules as you guys do when it came to the Bargaining Step. I can make them do whatever they want, all bargains they make are either flavourful or are intended to give you an advantage later (for example, the Consortium Tower one that moved security from floor to floor).

“Get back inside! Take cover!”

Witched blood can crack stone, it can most certainly tear flesh. It’s only defense is the weakness of curses and witchcraft everywhere. Fire and light, the direct essence of the Wheel God and the Wayward Flame. Throwing both your staff and sword aside, you grab hold of your wick and raise it high.
If God can still answer prayer, you beseech him now!

Wick: 0/10
Spark: 0/8

Your brow bursts into flame as you pour every single spark you have left within you to power a mighty Immolate. You aim the stream of fire upwards into the sky , the fire billowing out and widening to form a makeshift shield that turns all cursed blood it touches into ordinary droplets of gore.
It doesn’t stop all of them but the few spears that still make it through just strike the tiles of the bridge harmlessly, hitting nobody. And above you, burning up in the skies of Dis, the fire rages.

And then it winks out and you nearly collapse, catching yourself at the last moment. You drive the handle of the wick into the ground to steady yourself before turning back to assess the redcloaks.

They are gazing at you in naked awe, their smouldering prophet standing alone upon the blood-splattered bridge before them. But perhaps the most awe at this very moment belongs to...you. You hadn’t expected that to work nearly as well as it had.

Perhaps, even when God is dead and the light has faded, a miracle can still be found when you truly need it.

You sit down heavily, sparks flying before your eyes. Only a few of them are imaginary. The rest are just you. You can hear gunfire behind you as your companions shoot the remaining Witch Engine to death. You should be helping them. You try to get up but you can’t.
It feels as if all energy has been sapped from your bones and with it gone, there is no longer any barrier between you and the awful pain still lingering in your arms. You still haven’t rolled up your sleeves or taken off your gauntlets to check on how far the burns have climbed. You don’t want to.

You do it anyway. They’re now past your elbow. Your hands are withered claws, the kind you would see on a burned corpse before you’d see them on a man. Perhaps the pain will fade again in time. But, god damn it, you can’t be sure. You don’t know.

It is at this moment that your followers return to see you contemplating your blackened arms, a feature that you are sure only makes you look more divine to some. The redcloaks cluster around you, eagerly awaiting a triumphant speech no doubt.
You give it your best shot.

“Let’s get out of here.”

And goodnight everyone. As you may have noticed, I stayed up quite a bit later than usual 'cause I didn't want to pause it in the middle of the fight but now it is time for me to desiccate into a cloud of dust and blow away.
I finally got to try out the directly contested Collective Effort system and the results are in: It takes way too long! I might do it maybe one more time in the entire quest, jesus christ. I did try to make it a bit more bearable by working character stuff into it but man oh man did that take way too long.

I hope you all had fun and this quest will resume when I wake up. Vote will remain open until then.

I'm thinking long term.

Workshop follows our footsteps via Bea, finds the sun temple people who don't follow us, takes them out. Good PR for us, bad PR for workshop.

Similarly, we're tracked anywhere where Beatrice is: thus our best bet is in fact luring the workshop into conflict with others or making it stupidly difficult to follow us, unless we can get the device out.

>Back to the old Sun Temple. Let them see your work upon the star and reconsider their position.

Driven by your words, you all make your way down the corpse-ridden bridge, through the broken Senate Hall once more and down to the old train station that you had arrived in. The train was gone but the tracks were not and having grown up in Dis, the redcloaks are excellent trackhoppers. They walk along the sky-rail as if they weren’t hundreds of feet up in the air. There is a raw edge to their sudden joy and you know what it is. They are alive and they don’t quite believe it.
From the rail they’re able to open a window in one of the lower towers supporting the Hall and you all pile into it.

You can’t take the trains. As far as you know, many of them won’t even be working because of the starfall. You’ll have to walk back. You all do your best to disguise what has happened to you, adopting civilian clothes once more.

You wish you could have walked proudly and with your head held high, dignified and safe in the knowledge that so many shards of the Wheel God have already fallen into your hands. But it is not so. You feel drained and with your Flame Internal temporarily snuffed out...you feel cold.

They take turns supporting you, someone always walking by your side and letting you lean on their shoulder or holding you with an arm around your shoulder. You’d refuse it if you were strong enough but you aren’t so you don’t.

The first to volunteer himself for the task is Abe, the tall man supporting you as you all did your best to blend into the panicked crowds.
“I’m sorry,” you tell him. “I told you that I’d treat that wound of yours but I don’t have the Wick right now.”

Abe doesn’t look worried. Someone’s bandaged it up.
“It’s no concern, Orion. Worry about yourself first. Get some sleep, some meditation. Recharge yourself. I’ll still be here when you wake up and you can fix me up then.”

“I was a fool to use it all on that last Immolate. It probably didn’t need to be that large.”

“It saved my life! Is that foolish?”

You grow blearier as you all continue your journey, the cityscape of Dis slowly changing around you from the tower to the cramped confines of the Mazes. Abe is replaced with Alex, who has thrown an arm around your shoulder and is leaning up against you.
The proximity makes you incredibly uncomfortable but as you were in no shape to walk quickly on your own, you close your eyes and bear it.

“We’re going back to the Sun Temple,” Alex tells you.

“What?”

“Beatrice didn’t want us going back to base since the Workshop can still follow her. So we figured, let’s visit the Temple and show that old bastard what we’ve done. He can’t be neutral anymore.”

“It’s as good as any I suppose. And how are you? All well?”

1/2
>>
>>2601739
“Yes,” she says and you can tell she’s lying. You don’t really have the energy to push her on the matter however. Something to handle later.

Sometime later, still walking, Alex leaves and is replaced, by all people, Beatrice. With her head barely coming up to your chest, she’s entirely the wrong height to do anything like this. That doesn’t seem to stop her from trying however.
“Now this is a bit of a reversal, isn’t it? Should I sweep you of your feet and carry you?”

“You couldn’t.”

“Don’t tempt me. I reckon I could get two or three steps before my spine fuses together.”

“You’re in awfully high spirits, Beatrice.”

“Shouldn’t I be? We fucking won!”

“Yes. But you’re never happy.”

“You’re right,” she says, her tone suddenly changing. “I’m damn pissed off at all you fuckers! Read my lips Orion, we are going to have words. I’m renegotiating just what the fuck our deal is! Buuuut, that can wait for when you aren’t half-asleep.”

“Beatrice.”

“Yes?”

“Now that we’re this close, there’s something I’ve noticed that I’ve never told you.”

“...Yes?”

“You smell awful. Terrible.”

“Yeah, I sweat sulfur byproduct sometimes. Like the world’s biggest rotten egg.”

By the time you all reach the Sun Temple, a crowd of onlookers have already gathered in front of it. The door leading into the little room is ajar, almost knocked off its hinges and vandalised on top of it all with black paint.

TRAITORS

A handful of bodies litter the room inside and in some cases, spill out onto the street. Not many but a few. Those that couldn’t or wouldn’t renounce, those that couldn’t run. It’s mostly older people and in at least one case, children.
The lanterns have been shattered, the candles stomped into smears of wax. And in the midst of it all is what is left of the temple Elder. He’s been beaten to death. And as some final sign of disrespect, omeone has stuffed a clod of soil into the corpse’s mouth.

And then you look back to the crowd and while you see horror on some faces, you don’t see any disapproval.

“Orion,” Beatrice whispers urgently. “Orion let’s leave now. Now. Tell the redcloaks to follow you. Do it before they start a fight!”

“Too long have we permitted this,” you hear a man’s voice boom in the distance. There are cheers and shouts accompanying him so though you can’t see him, you know that he must have quite the following.
2/3
>>
>>2601742
“We’ve let these nests of vipers sit in the heart of our own city! Most of them descend from barbarians from outside! They’ve never been a part of us, of our culture! In our tolerance, we invited our worst enemies to be part of our great city, even when they got violent, even when red-cloaked thugs threatened honest men and women! But now we see the price! Now we see their true face! After what has happened today, anyone who refuses to assimilate to the city they live in and renounce their dead god is an enemy! And it won’t stop here! Even now, true sons and daughters of Dis are rising up against these death cults! And we will not stop!”

You can see the wisdom in withdrawing, in telling the redcloaks to follow you before any of them reveal themselves or, worse yet, open fire on the crowd. But you cannot see the justice of it. This was their home.

>You’ll all back. You can’t afford another fight right now.

>You and your companions will fall back and find another spot to stay. But you won’t stop any redcloak who wants to take action right now. How could you.

Interlude

“So,” the Bridesmaid said to the cloaked figure kneeling before her. “What was your reason for coming here again? I know it wasn’t to kill me because I know you’re not that stupid. Something like you cannot kill me.”
With a small amount of deliberation, the veiled woman moved through the massive black-and-white serpent coiled around her and propped her feet up on the back of the witch kneeling before her. Oh, excellent. She could hear Maria gritting her teeth.

“I was just venting.”
Maria was indeed gritting her teeth.
“There’s something I need from you. I am here to take it and maybe if I do, I’ll forgive you.”

“Forgive me? For what? What has little old me ever done? Don’t you quite literally owe me your life?”

“I know you had something to do with the star. You always do.”

“You know,” the Bridesmaid said, human and snake mouth moving as one. “You should be a little more polite to your elders.”

“I’m older than you!”

“It doesn’t count when you’ve spent most of your ‘life’ dead, darling. Now tell your dear old friend what you need. I never refuse a friend, even when they’re kind that never know when to fold.”

“I am here for your name.”

The woman in the bridal outfit raised an uncontrollably shaking hand to her veil in feigned shock. It was extremely obvious it was fake, that was the whole point.
“What? How indecent!”
The serpent leans over the treasure hoard as it speaks, the scars on both sides of its neck plainly visible.
“You’re generally supposed to woo a maiden, classically speaking. Not pin her to wall with a spear made of her bodyguards.”

“I know you’re going to give it to me. I know you’ve always wanted to.”

“Well, it’s right in front of you. Drink it in. See me and see my name. You have my consent to speak my name with your imperfect hands. Summon my shadow wherever you will and I will darken the world on command. It is all yours.”

“I won’t thank you.”

“That’s fine. I’m such a good friend, you see. Now now now, this is interesting isn’t it? Now you have mine, I do believe you’ve collected them all, haven’t you! Every name, every sign, every evocation of-oh wait!”
The Bridesmaid slapped herself in exaggerated shock.
“You don’t, do you. You almost did.but then you got it pulled out beneath you. I do believe I’ve forgotten her name.”
She hadn’t.

“Bridget.”

“Ah yes. You really took that badly didn’t you? You too something as ugly and lowly as a Third Man to your side, to your lab, to your bed even? Hey, don’t look at me like that. I’m just speculating. And she stole it from you. That final secret you had spent so long coaxing Dinu’s old bones into giving up. The skull opened and whispered the name of its father and you didn’t hear it. She did. She did and she ran. Oh poor you. It was all very tragic.”

“Why are you telling me all this? If it is rub salt into the wound, I assu-”

“Sssh. I’m talking, dearie. None can speak over me, not even myself, The reason I’m telling you this is because I know something you don’t. And that’s rare so I want to go over it. You see, I know where Bridget is. I only just learned it very recently!”

“You do! Where is she?”

“Dead. She escaped the city as you suspected but she went further west than you ever searched. Eventually she came to a town and in her effort to make it her own, died.”

“And the name died with her.”

“No. For you see, out of all those there that witnessed her witchcraft, there were two who were capable of memorizing witch-sign without going into hysterics. They know it. It is in their heads even still. And now, I will tell you who and where you are. I think you will find that this objective and your current one will dovetail quite nicely. Two sets of cards that might look different but still come together to make a full house.”

“Why? Why would you tell me?”

“Because I’m such a good and dear friend.”

The best part is Orion won't learn any of this, and no matter who wins between Golemist and Orion Snake-Eye's here will still have fun either way. If she spills something to Orion out of death spite or whatever Snake will probably just say something about her paying her life debt should we survive to confront it. It's all so disgustingly perfect.

She still has a Earth sign. She's a new Earth God, yeah, still given she's alive and every other earth god besides MAYBE the moon is dead, she's not something to underestimate. The Golemist cannot kill her because you need fire to do so.

Also Golemist wants the name of the dead god who smothered the wayward flame. his skull is likely Dinu's bones.

>You’ll all back off. You can’t afford another fight right now.

“Stop,” you say and then repeat it louder. “Stop! Stay your hands!”
That draws some attention but it is not to the crowd you are speaking. It is to Alex, whose hands cover her face even as she stares at the ruined Temple with a frantic despair. It is to the redcloaks who even now draw tight hands around rifles and cudgels. You can see the cries die in their throats as you raise your hand.
“Now is not the time,” you say quietly.

Damn it all but Beatrice is right. You cannot afford another fight. And while this may not be just, you can only swallow your pride and bear it for now. Add it to the burden. That is all any of you can do.

With Beatrice’s help propping you up, you turn your back to the Temple and slowly begin to hobble off. The other will follow you. And they do so, leaving a questioning crowd behind.

And as the redcloaks cluster around you, the darkness at the edges of your vision rises and swallows you up.

…….

Wick: 0/10
Spark: 0/8

You wake with a start, not feeling much better or any less tired than you were before. You are lying on a blanket, a softly burning lantern sitting next to you. You are careful not to touch it. With no Wick, it could actually burn you.

You recognise this room. You’re in the lowest room back in your old base, the armoury. Your makeshift bed is right in the middle of the practice ring. And you’re not alone. Something moves in the darkness. You tense, rising up and-

It’s just Alex.

She’s sitting on the chair by the wall, still dressed in her tattered and bloodstained coat. The red scarf, normally sitting around her neck, is crumpled on the table beside her.
“You’re awake.”

“Yes,” you say awkwardly, unsure of how else to respond. “What happened?”

“You passed out. We brought you back here. It’s only been an hour or so.”

“Wait! Why here? The Workshop can find Beatrice, remember! We shouldn-”

Alex raises a hand placatingly.
“It’s all good. We threw her out.”

“You what?”

“It was mostly diplomatic.”
She winces.
“Maybe some of the words weren’t too polite. But I could tell she knew we were right. She’s up in the floor above us, in the courtyard. That way we can still help if she gets attacked but she won’t lead them here.”

“I can’t imagine she’s too happy about that.”

“Well I’m not happy either boss,” Alex blurts out in a much harsher tone of voice than she had obviously intended.
“I mean...sorry.”

“It’s fine. Talk to me.”
You slowly rise out of bed.

>>
>>2602555
“Well...it’s...I guess...they’re all dead aren’t they? The congregation wasn’t that bad you know, they just didn’t want trouble. But then we brought trouble to them anyway. I shouldn’t have called them cowards.”
She holds her head in her hands.
“People are spreading lies about us. Only, they’re not lies are they? We really did it. But instead of punishing us, people are just ripping apart anyone who believes in the same shit. They can’t reach us and if they would we would be ready. But the children weren’t, Orion. What could they have done?”

You put a hand gingerly on her shoulder.
“This was not our fault.”

“Isn’t it?”

“It isn’t. We destroyed the star. It’s death and the deaths of all those beneath are on our hands. But the deaths of any Temples aren’t. That is not your fault.”

“I shot some more people today.”

“I know. You did well.”

“I don’t think I can do it as easily as you and and the witch. I don’t think I’m ready.”

“Are the other redcloaks feeling this way?”

“No. No and that’s terrifying to me. But it doesn’t matter I guess. Because when I close my eyes its not their faces I see. I don’t see the Temple or the star.”
She looks up at you hollowly.
“When I close my eyes, do you know what I see?”

“...What?”

She pressed her hands together and then, in a faltering and awkward fashion, made the sign that the Witch-Engine had used when it pronounced death upon humanity. She stares at it and through it, no doubt gazing upon the ineffable real symbol that defies description in all but thought.
“I saw it, Orion. I saw the shape behind the hands. There were so many of them, how could I not? And now it’s all I can see.”

You sit down beside her.
“Knowing a name is not a sin Alex.”

“But I’ve become tainted! And now I can’t get it out of my head! And now...and now, it’s possible isn’t it? I could become a witch!”

“Only if you choose to. There is always a choice. Just choose rightly.”

“We always seem to be choosing wrongly sometimes. And I can’t stop seeing it. And the more I see it, the more I want to recreate it! It’s so big! It’s bigger than you or me or Dis! What if one day I give in and-”

You silence her, not with voice but with witch-sign. Placing your hands on the table between you, you make a clumsy sign of ghoul-stitching. Following that you flow into the sign of a curse, a chill on the bones that never ends.
“Alex,” you say softly. “How many times do you think I’ve seen the true shape of the earth? I’ve spent thirty years fighting witches. And it has not tainted me. Yes, they will never leave. Every single one in my head is as fresh as the day I first saw it and just as horrible. They won’t fade. But you don’t have to fade either. Despite all of this, I am not a witch.”

“I’m not as strong as you.”

“You are right. You’re stronger.”

“What?”

“When I first killed a man, I vomited. When I first had a witch-sign burned into my brain, I woke up crying for weeks afterwards. And when I first killed a witch...well, there was nothing good involved in that. It was the worst day of my life. When I was your age, I was a damn fool. But where I was constantly making mistakes, you’ve already gotten on the right track. When you get to my age, Alex, you’ll no doubt be more fearsome than I could imagine. You’ll have a hundred witch-signs in your head and thrice that many witch scalps on your belt. I know I can rely on you not to falter.”

Alex rises to her feet, taking a slow step back. She’s smiling but only desperately.
“You really think so?”

“I know so. Now leave me and tend to the morale of your troops. I still need to meditate so that I may heal Abe.”

She forces out a laugh.
“He does like to get himself to hurt, doesn’t he?”

“You don’t even know the half of it.”

An hour later, you open eyes and awaken refreshed. Your fatigue has melted away and where once you had burned down to embers, the flames within you were stoked once more. And yes, while you might not have expected the atrocity at the Temple, this has still been a worthy day. Another shard has fallen into your hands, enemies have been vanquished and you are so close to finally fulfilling your goal that you can almost taste it.

It had been just a dream for so long but in just a few more days, it might be reality. The sun will shine once more. Humanity will once again know the presence of God.

And it is then that you hear something crash up above you. Someone screams and with that, you’ve grabbed onto your wick and staff and are running up the stairs! Your body moves before your mind even properly reacts, taking the stairs two at a time.

In the middle room, where the redcloaks had set up their communal quarters, there is a ...thing. Youre not sure how to describe it at first. It’s as much insect as it is reptile, a scraping crawling thing several times larger and longer than a man. Bulging black eyes stare blankly out of a malformed raven skull sitting atop a centipedal body with a long ridge of stone running down its back. And behind, a lashing cacophony of at least a dozen whiplike tails!
It reminds of you of the fumus, the aerial predators of Dis and Tangle Workshop runoff. They don’t resemble imps or trolls, just a chimeric beast unrelated to either.

It shrieks, the sorrowful sound enough to nearly deafen you.

“What is this? What’s going on?”

A scattered amount of redcloaks are spread out around the beast, weapons half drawn. Most of them have fled to the top floor however and you can’t blame them. Trying to fight something like this in such a small space? How did it even get in here?

“I don’t know!,” Alex shouts. “It didn’t come through the door. Maybe it burrowed through the city!”

“It’s the Workshop again!,” another redcloak screams. “We should have sent the witch further away!”

You barely have time to process all this before the monster lunges, driving straight at you with its jagged bone beak! You dodge to the side, redcloaks diving for cover as bullets bounce off its chitin to little effect. You get a good look at the thing’s eyes as you narrowly avoid the strike and in them you see only darkness. There is no intellect guiding this thing, all there is is beast.
So then how did it come here?

It musn’t be alone.

‘Get out of here! Run! Rifles aren’t worth anything this close!”

Alex almost runs but stops.
“But what about you.”

“I’ll be fine. Just go.”

>Tell the redcloaks to go find Beatrice and have her come back, for God’s sake! It didn’t work and you need her gun!

“And get Beatrice!,” you yell up after your retreating followers. “I could use her gun!”
Damn it! Now that you’re fully awake and thinking straight, you can see straight through the flaw in the redcloak’s plan. Beatrice had already stayed at the base after her escape from the Thorn! They know it! So even if you’re still not sure how this beast got in here, you know exactly why.

The creature lunges for you with its beak again and you step to the side, thwacking it on its almost skeletal head as you do. It seems to barely feel it.

The thing has no legs but it worms forward, trampling bedrolls as it thrashes around the room. And as it moves and you move it, you can see the wall where it used to be. There’s no hole there. It didn’t burrow. It didn’t come through the doors. It certainly couldn’t even fit through them! So how did it even invade your home in the first place?

It squirms around and lashes at you with its tails, stinging whips going right past your staff and slicing you painfully around the chest and shoulders. Not hard enough to draw blood, thank god, you don’t want to risk their little stingers being poisonous.

By the third time it tries to bite you, you are ready. You shove former tail of the Iron Duke straight down its open beak and into its throat! It tries to close its mouth but instead you draw it closer and reach for its bulging eyes with your free hand!
It’s not pleasant work but you’ll dig its eyes out with your hands if you have to.

But as soon as you grab hold of the curiously glass-like orbs, they suddenly shine with a coating of dew! Smoke rises from your gauntlets as you touch the tears now leaking from its eyes and you hastily pull back. And then the beast spits out your staff and knocks you into the wall.

You sink to the ground in a bundle of pain, gripping your staff and using it to lever yourself up as you crawl out of the way of the monster’s squirming bulk. The creature is still crying, long thick tears dripping down and etching metal.
How are you going to handle this beast in such an enclosed space?

Evens: Self-Ignition.
Odds: Burn it out.

>Raise your Wick and burn it out. You might take some of the redcloak’s belongings with it but that’s a fair price to pay. (Medium roll)

You duck and wave as the creature lashes at you with its tails once more. It’s all but circled the entire room now, forcing you to try and look out in every possible direction at once. Perhaps it’s a little smarter than you gave it credit for.

“Orion!”
A wretched voice calls out down from the first floor. You can’t see her but you’d recognise it anywhere.
“I’m here, I’m coming. What the hell is that fucking thing?”

“I don’t know. Help me kill it!”

You hear Beatrice stomping heavily down the stairwell behind you.
“Just keep it still and I’ll take it out! I can’t figure out what end is the face and which is the arse while it’s thrashing around!”

Keep it still? That might be easier said than done. But in your experience, the most reliable way to get any monster to cower is simple. Burn it. Make it fear the fire. As a Lamplighter, your primary objective is to carry light into the darkness. Sometimes you have to stick it right into the darkness’ face.

You point your long-handled wick at the creature and summon forth the Flame Internal. And from the tip bursts forth a spray of liquid flame right into the creature’s face! It screams and cries even more but you take a step forward while keeping the flame steady. And another, and another. You won’t stop until you’ve got this abomination forced into a corner.

Wick: 3/10
Spark: 6/8

But after the initial surprise is over, the creature isn’t cowering over as much as you expected. Instead it curls around itself, the stone plates along the back interlocking with one another to form a fireproof shell. And then, as the fire falters just a little, it bursts forth and rolls towards you!

>Roll 1d6. The first 3 shall be used for Orion. The 3 stages of the roll are dodging the roll, counter-attacking and then dodging what happens when it unfurls.

Hey no. I think the monsters have Wicks. Are there natural animals on this world, Ouro?
>>
>>2603126
Natural animals do exist but they are wickless. Possessing a Wick is the key identifier for humanity, something that spans the large physical differences between the three types of Men that would normally result in them being considered three different species.

You jump to the side as the rolling creature smashes into the wall of the tank and as it does so, you spot a gap in its petrified armour! You drop the wick and, with your staff held with both hands, you wedge it firmly into a gap between the the plates and heave.
Using the springy metal tail as a lever, you pull one of the stone plates off entirely! It comes off with a grotesque sucking sound, flipping into the wall and leaving a trail of blood behind. Human blood.

The monster wails and then uncoils with surprising power, springing back open with enough force that part of its squirming body strikes you square in the chest and sends you smacking into the far wall. Your head bangs against the metal and you sink to the floor in a heap. That...that doesn’t make sense to you. It’s hard to think in a straight line right now but is it actually bigger than before?

The monster settles on its elongated haunches, supported by at least a dozen legs. Legs! It didn’t have legs before either! It had been as a snake or a worm but now clusters of spindly legs ending in spear-tipped points let it scrabble across the ground. Whatever this thing is, it’s still growing, still changing. It’s actively transforming and maturing before your very eyes.
Is that how it got into here? Was it some sort of larvae, something too small to notice? What had it been before this? Could you have stopped it then?

“Beatrice! What are you doing? Shoot it! Shoot it!”
You stare up the dented stairwell to where Beatrice is still standing, her pistol held loosely in one hand. She’s staring at the back of the monster, at the cluster of tendrils. But she isn’t firing. Why isn’t she shooting? You stilled the monster!

“I can’t,” she says helplessly. “I can’t.”
And with that, she retreats back up the stairs to the upper floor.

It is just you and the monster now but, despite all appearances, the monster is no longer the most shocking thing in the room. You’ve never seen Beatrice refuse a shot.

The abomination staggers forward on newborn legs and opens its skeletal beak wide. Clusters of flat teeth are growing all along the inside the jaw and blooming like enamel flowers.

>Get around the monster and escape to the upper floor. You need to know what is so damn important!

>Continue the fight and see if you can get around to the tail end. If you can brave the tendrils, you might be able to see what disgusted Beatrice.

>I have doubts of it working,

Because it absolutely will not work. Why on earth would it do anything at all that would work out better than trying to straight up kill it? You're using the wrong benediction for doing anything helpful with, it would be the right one if >>2603149 was true, but it's not. No monster so far has "grown around" its subject, but we've had plenty of things transform, mutate, and do things that would doom the victim anyways. Relying on this being the solution is a false hope based on absolutely nothing. I may as well suggest that we start dancing in a circle to make everything all just get better.

But fine, we'll presume that we can, somehow, magically cure this hideous transformation using our basic bitch tier benedictions. Fine. In that case you want a Benediction of Cleansing, to remove a curse, if it's even a curse and not an outright transformation. This isn't something you heal from; what's been wounded? Are you going to heal him into a person again?

Again, so many presumptions, altogether too many, based off of whim. No. This will end badly, and not do anything you actually want to happen.

>This blessing requires Orion to touch the target and to remain in contact for a temporary duration as the Benediction slowly pulls it out all poisons from their bodies and burns them away. This works on magical poisons as well but not against magical poisons that explicitly protected against such means. When used on a creature of the Dark this Benediction can disorient them.
This is probably our best shot, I don't think this is a curse.
>>
>>2603165
Yeah. The wood stuff the Tangle uses doesn't seem like a Dark creature, but at the same time still burns properly. If anything will work, it'll be Purging treating the whole thing as a poison, or plain Cauterize amputating Abe out of the giant mass.

Also this only makes it seem more like the Shard is at the Tonic workshop.
>>
The Workshop has to burn.
>>
>>2603167
My theory is that the chemist is the other lamplighter, who turned to making the tonic after seeing how hopeless the situation was. The tonic is the only thing we've seen so far in Dis that's completely benevolent. I imagine the tangle shard is powering the thorn, as it seems to be alive.

>Close in and subject it to a Benediction of Relief.

You step in after it misses you with another awkward charge and subject it to three quick strikes with your staff but, lacking the obvious opening you saw before, your blows just bounce off the growing stone plates. You curse the fate that caused you to leave your sword back in the room below. You had been in a hurry and it hadn’t been in arms reach!

So instead of trying to batter at it uselessly, you reach in past the beak and lay your hand atop the monster’s skull. This is almost certainly a creature of darkness and if it deflects the stave and endures the flame, it shall suffer through Benediction!

Your hand flares with white light as you lay on the strongest blessing you can, feeding the Benediction of Relief that you can muster. Armour cannot stop it, skin cannot endure it. All you simply have to do is touch the thing and bless its cursed form.

Wick: 0/10
Spark: 0/8

You back away as the creature wails, tears still streaming from the featureless glass orbs that are its eyes. You’ve left a glowing white handprint behind and as you watch, it slowly begins to expand across the creature’s face. The effort has left you drained but the monster’s fate is now sealed. The Benediction will keep eating away at its flesh until the Wick you empowered it with is spent.

The monster backs away from you, floundering on suddenly wobbling legs. It shakes its head over and over as if trying to dislodge the holy mark. But it’ll do it no good. What heals the bodies of Men unmakes the flesh of Dark.

You were expecting another attack. What you weren’t expecting was for the beast to suddenly look you straight in the eye from across the room.
“Oooorrrrr…” it rasps. It sounds hideous.
It stumbles forward, looking almost as if it doesn’t know what to do.
“OoOooOOOR…”

You raise your staff as it advances but it never reaches you. Instead it stops roughly two feet away, its disintegrating skull level with your face.
”Help me.

You back away disgusted as it assaults you with indecipherable noise and a foul stench. But it doesn’t attack again. Instead it lies down in front of you, head resting on the stone floor. And for some reason, you stay your hand. What is it doing? It coughs as best as it can with half of its awful beak now missing, having faded into wisps of smoke. It coughs and coughs and coughs until it finally spits something out at your feet.

It is a ragged bundle shredded cloth. They’re ruined but you still recognise them as Abe’s clothes. And only then it occured to you that when you awoke, you saw Alex. You saw the redcloaks. You heard them speak of Beatrice. You didn’t even notice that Abe wasn’t with them.

And now it’s eaten him.

No. That can’t be right.

The tunic is covered in ooze but there’s no blood. Not even in the places where it had been so clearly rent and torn.

>>2603195
The beast rustles, drawing your attention once more. It’s sliding past you, once again not even trying to harm you. It curls up behind you until it has dragged its last pair of legs past you. The stinging tendrils at its back have curled up like the legs of a dead spider. And in the midst of them all is a human arm.

No, not like the Witch Engine. It wasn’t growing out of the creature. It was almost embedded in it. And that arm, that too-human arm, bore the mark of a small pinprick wound below its wrist.

“No!”
You grab hold of the arm and pull, dislodging whatever mass that was in it. You pull as hard as you are able and with a slow slopping sound, you see just a little more. The arm is connected to a body, a body that is half-dissolved and whose features are erased. The...this mannequin, this desecrated corpse, is connected to the bulk of the beast by the side of its torso, at the site of the gargoyle bite, where a stonelike growth has sprung forth like a cluster of gray veins that feed further into the thing. They are together. Fused. This is irreversible.
“Abe!”

And at that name, the blasphemous thing stirs and turns back to face you. It thrusts its head at you and once again, you lay your hand atop the slowly crumbling beak. But not to hurt. Instead you just run your hand down the side of the skeletal face, looking desperately for any sign of anyone you once knew.
And there, in its ever-weeping eyes, you see a spark that wasn’t there before. A spark that you, with the same Benediction that is now killing it, rekindled within it.
“Oooor.”

“I am here. You can stop calling my name.”
You don’t know what to do. You don’t know what to say. This is a situation beyond you. It feels as if your mind has, on some higher level, stopped working.
“I’m sorry.”

Beatrice descends down the stairs, gun still in hand.
“I saw it,” she croaks. “I saw him and I knew what it was.”

“I don’t understand,” you say. You’re not even sure who you’re addressing at this point. “I don’t understand how this could happen.”

“I think it was the treatment. They did something. I don’t know.”
Her pistol clatters onto the floor.
“Was there something I could have done?”

You don’t answer that because you can’t. Instead you just stand stock still as the creature gazes up at the both of you with eyes that are being picked apart by holy magic. A white smoke is rising from its skull. After a moment’s hesitation, Beatrice places her hand upon the creature’s stone-plated side.
“This wasn’t how it was supposed to be,” she says.

That seems so glaringly obvious that all you can do is stare at her.

“No. No, I don’t mean that Orion. I’m just remembering something he told me when we were out of the Thorn. He said-...do you remember when he joined us? He said that he owed us his soul. That if he had stayed behind and died a bitter old man he wouldn’t have been able to face his family when he died. That’s why he needed to die doing something good, so he could look them straight in..”
She stumbles over the words.
“Straight in the eye and tell them that he’d done good. But what now? How is he going to face them like this? He doesn’t even get that!”

She balls her fists and punches the monster in the side uselessly before throwing herself upon it and burying her face in its side. You can hear a muffled scream.

It’s happened again. It’s not the first time a companion of yours has died. But it’s never been like this. And you can’t help but contemplate Beatrice’s final words. This thing has no Wick. You may have restored himself to him with the same magic that doomed him to die, but it still has no Wick. This is no longer a human soul. Abe will not meet his wife and child as a man but...but as this.

“The Wheel God still has a place for you,” you promise it. “He must have. And he gathers you up now to join his host. Blue skies await you, Abraham. For you, the night has ended.”
And, gathering up what is left of the creature’s head in both hands, you bend down and gently kiss its disgusting brow. It’s what you’re supposed to do for a brother. It’s what you were never able to do for all the brothers you left behind in Saiph.

The monster dies. The Benediction has finally eaten into its brain. You slowly guide what’s left of the skull to the ground. By the time you look up, Beatrice is standing once more. She’s covering her face as if to conceal tears but you know the truth of it. It’s the opposite. She’s trying to hide that she cannot shed even a single one.
You let her have her shame.

that's even easier. Whether we "fail" or not is immaterial. It was only a matter of how many people would need to die for everyone to escape. Ouro just turned that into a quantized mechanic instead of getting X number of people killed if we failed the collective.

Interlude

Deep within the Thorn, that spire of living wood that was home to both wonder and horror in equal measure, is a garden. The Thorn contains many gardens, most of which are in the domain of Wick Studies but this one is different.
It is a cyst within the tower, a bubble of wood with no obvious exit or connection to anywhere else within the Thorn. The central stairwells grow around it, floors deform to avoid it, it is not on any floor plan.

And within it is a field of soft white grass and dotted among them, some of the last remaining day-blooming flowers in all the world. The perimeter was patrolled by altered ghouls, formerly patchwork creatures that have been rebuilt and improved because what is within must never be seen any living soul. Not even the Captains of the Thorn can be entrusted with this.

Dr Surrex, former assistant to the Head Doctor and Chief of Wick Studies, observed the hulking creatures as he walked amongst the flowers. They were not his area of expertise but he knew that they had thus far been unable to replicate the sense of loyalty that a witch instilled within those creatures. No chemical affected them for they did not think with their brains.
Instead they had simply shackled a starved and legless Witch Engine to the side of the wall, with its hands shaved off and fed just enough soil to sustain itself each day. The Engine confused the altered ghouls but they still cared for the helpless thing and clustered around it, begging for the day when the strange witch would finally puppet them. And they would defend its resting place against any human intruder to the very end.

He was approaching the center of the garden, the source of all the light. It was...for lack of a better word to describe it, a tree. It grew from a shallow square pool that was kept constantly filled with the Chemist’s finest tonics. The pool was full of shimmering tonic, it’s surface only disturbed by snaking tree roots and the skeletons. The pool was full of bones, human skeletons clutching at each other in what must have been orgiastic joy in their final moments. And sitting atop the pile of bones was the Surrexerunt.

The Surrexerunt was a tree of light, a tall growth covered in thorny white bark. It’s branches snaked out in all directions and bore bell-shaped silver flowers that constantly overflowed with shining nectar. From this nectar and these petals, the entire garden was lit. Warmth radiated from the tree at all times and if you were to follow the paths of its shining branches, you would note that many of them touched the walls of the garden and when they did, they merged seamlessly into the Thorn. The Surrexerunt’s capillaries have spread throughout the entire spire.

This was Doctor Spinae’s finest creation, seeded after he had returned from the home of the architect of humanity with all the secrets to the base substance of Man in hand. It was no holy site to Dr Surrex however. This was, in a sense, his home. This close to the tree, he could feel the flame within himself burn in synchronicity with it. The Wick within him was the same as the one within the tree. And if his body was to be destroyed, his Wick would rejoin the place from which it had been born.

And it is for a reason very close to that that he is here now. This is the first time he has ever set foot within the garden without his creator by his side. He had been trying to stay rational about the disaster. About the responsibility. But everything beneath the facade was crumbling. There was an emptiness he couldn’t explain. He was beyond his own diagnosis.
But his other half, she had taken it even worse. Enough to risk her beloved Witch Engines ...and herself. And it is for her sake that he is here now.

So he stood and watched the Surrexerunt and he hoped that it would function as it always did. That nothing would go wrong. That they had not lost part of themselves forever. He didn’t know what he’d do if she died so soon after the Head Doctor.

But those worries were for naught. The Surrexerunt functioned as it ever did. He watched as the branches around the central trunk pulled back and revealed the central blossom. It was blood-red and huge and its petals were closed tight around precious cargo.
And, over the next few minutes, the flower opened and the petals fell away into the tonic. The central stalk, weighed down by its burden, bent almost double before the amniotic flesh-sack broke free and landed in the tonic amongst the skeletons.

His shoes already off, he waded into the pool and dragged the sack free, tearing at the outer membrane and stepping back before he could be touched by the sudden flood of mud flowing free from within. And emerging from it, dishevelled, naked and covered in gray slime, was his other half. She looked almost exactly like him.

She had the good grace to look ashamed at her circumstances.
“I’m sorry.”

“I knew you were doing this,” Dr Surrex said. “I was told that you’d drunk the acid before you left.”

“It would have been worth it,” said the newborn Dr Erunt, former assistant to the Head Doctor and Chief of Wickless Studies. “This was all my fault. It was my mess to clean up.”

He offered her a spare white cloak. She accepted.

“Maybe so. But it’s not a risk I want us taking. You have come back less than what you were.”

“I have? What am I missing? Mental faculties seem normal.”

“Roughly about an inch off the top. You know that degradation is inevitable from bloom to bloom.”

“I am glad to see you back. Every time, I fear it will no longer work.”

“And I do the same for you, you know that. But it always does. And I needed to crush those monsters myself.”

“And what of the accelerant?”
The accelerant, of course, being the vial of pseudoflesh accelerative fluid that he had given her before she had left. Pseudoflesh was the cutting edge of his mud studies, the growth of artificial humanity and the Thorn was full of failed experiments that had lost both shape and soul because of it. It attacked the Wick. But he had refined it into a perfectly safe medicine, something that could emulate the human body seamlessly and meld with it to cure almost any injury. And, just a few days ago, he had administered it to a man who had been rescued from the Consortium Tower disaster. He had done it to fix a gargoyle bite, something that before pseudoflesh had been previously impossible to treat.
And so, knowing now the nature of those two patients they had found, he had given her the accelerant vial. Pseudoflesh was safe. But when exposed to that, it returned to the wild state of raw creation that had caused so many failed experiments and lead to so many peculiar creatures.

“I got it on the subject. They actually let me come up and talk. I don’t think I got that damn Lamplighter but I know I delivered the accelerant to your old patient. Hopefully he kills them all.”

“Not a very likely proposition.”

“I’m sorry. I should have remembered how nervous this all makes you. I was selfish.”

Surrexerunt embraced and, holding one another in each other’s arms, gazed out upon the parasitic tree that they were simply limbs of. The ultimate goal of the Workshop was to safeguard life. All of it. And often that meant that the lives of individuals had to be spent, reworked. It was a grisly process. But safe in the knowledge that those they hunted were truly despicable and deserving of all that could be done to them, they could do it together.

They had to. There was nobody else left.

And with that, I must rest and sleep. In regards to what you could have done to stop it? There were some things regarding how you treated Dr Erunt or Abe's injury. But like Orion and Beatrice, you couldn't have really known or be expected to have done so.
So I can understand if you don't like it. Tell me what you all think and I'll read 'em when I wake up.

I can't see how spending more Wick on burning that wall of plants would've allowed us to prevent the fourth Engine's shtick
>>
>>2603303
Ok. First thing is first, Did Abraham not seek medical attention at all? Did no one check up on him?

They guy might not want to speak up all the time but he's an intimate part of our group. Someone the Red Cloaks look up too, perhaps even more than Orion because unlike Orion he's just like them, a normal human who stepped up to fight for what is right. The fact NO ONE noticed this is training my ability to believe. Likewise him not seeking out some sort of medic during the timeframe of infection too turning. This should have been caught. The fact it wasn't makes all the npcs around look like gibbering retards that have no worth.

Secondly, I sincerely fail to see how expending more wick to burn plants would have defeated the witch engine's fuck you spell as it would have caught very few men, and fire might cook the outside but the inside would still be usable and the spell prepared them all anyways.

Thirdly You penalizing us for winning by a not high enough margin. Iget you need to keep thing thematic, but having us lose all our wick when we were all banking on using it later, because more fights were likely coming (thanks star fuckers) and we needed to heal Abe. Then we lose it all despite winning. That is something wholly new you pulled on us and quite frankly so out of line with everything else it feels like you're trying to pull a haha gotcha moment on purpose.

This entire debacle requires everyone but Orion to put on Idiot caps and juggle idiot balls.

Sorry it took this long to get back to you but you run 7 pm my time and usually well into my sleep schedule and into my morning work.

It’s sad to see Abe go, but it’s not unexpected. We kind of should’ve seen this coming. My only real complaint is that we’re basically constantly under siege and it seems like there’s not a lot of time for development like there was in Snek quest. Which is fine. It’s a much different character and the challenges are much different. But it was kinda cool to see stuff like that Wax Saint and outside of Dis and now it seems like we’re just constantly beat back attacks.

Having said that, I’m still enjoying this particular thread. The Tangle Workship plots are very clever. And I don’t think you were particularly unfair killing off Abe. We really should’ve seen something like that coming given how grossly fucked up the Tangle Workshop has been thus far.

I would say that I think a full assault on the Thorn is a really bad idea at this point. We’re pretty badly battered as a group, things aren’t really going exceedingly well for us.

I think the next step should be trying to secure this ship, if it exists, and frankly figuring out who the crazy old sunworshipper in the docks was. We need to try to get more allies if they exist. And it wouldn’t hurt to have a fortified mobile base to operate from in the Sea of Mud. If only just to not be under constant assault from the Tangle Workshop. I don’t think we’re really ready to face them head-on yet.
>>
>>2603785
>I would say that I think a full assault on the Thorn is a really bad idea at this point.

We have no choice. They know where we are, and we're going to be under continuous an constant attack because everyone hates us now. until they are cleared out every single one of our enemies will be able to find us easily and they'll just keep us on the run until we pass out.

>We need to try to get more allies if they exist.
They either hate us now for nuking the city or got killed off by the people who hate us for nuking the city. WE literally burned ALL diplomatic bridges when we did the star fall.

Furthermore you assume we A know how to operate a boat,. B have the supplies to operate the boat. and C. can evade the enemy with a tracker on us while we're in the ocean with absolutely no cover whatsoever..

We need to get that tracker out of Bea somehow. We just can't function being on the run the majority of the time because anywhere we go will inevitably be turned into an enclosing circle of death. The Doctors have proven to think far enough ahead that the longer Bea has a tracker in her, the more guaranteed our defeat is. We can't survive by just not making mistakes and acting in response to action because it may as well functionally be a wave attack button. Soon, the Thorn will start co-opting the the remaining forces of others to hunt us down. We need to find someone who can remove it, or do it ourselves. Because if it's still there when Dis gets back on its feet we'll just fight battle after battle without any real progress.
And the Doctors are smart enough to apply attrition tactics and whittle us down for sure.

The fact that she informed us how they were tracking us is a problem, too. Because either Erunt was so confident we wouldn't be able to do anything about it, or it's not a tracker in a typical device sense considering the Thorn's other work. We should probably be prepared that it has a fail safe of some sort, a trigger of some sort, or otherwise dangerous defense mechanism.

Or we go without Beatrice.
>>
Updates will resume in an hour or so! In the meantime, I'll respond a bit to you fellas.

>>2603757
>Ok. First thing is first, Did Abraham not seek medical attention at all? Did no one check up on him?
How so? By the time he's supporting Orion on the walk back, his arm is bandaged so he's let some of the redcloaks treat him. I'm not sure what treatment you were expecting him to get besides that?
It's not like any medic they can get their hands on would look at this small cut that isn't clotting properly and go 'oh shit, it's a secret Workshop chemical that's designed to react to the treatment they gave you for your gargoyle bite, luckily I know exactly how to stop it'.

So I don't think I 'get' this complaint.

>Secondly, I sincerely fail to see how expending more wick to burn plants would have defeated the witch engine's fuck you spell as it would have caught very few men, and fire might cook the outside but the inside would still be usable and the spell prepared them all anyways.
What? I never said anything even remotely like this. Those two things aren't related. It sounds like you got the wrong idea from someone parroting something I said on discord and/or putting words in my mouth. I never said or even implied this.

>Thirdly You penalizing us for winning by a not high enough margin. Iget you need to keep thing thematic, but having us lose all our wick when we were all banking on using it later, because more fights were likely coming (thanks star fuckers) and we needed to heal Abe. This is fair. Even I thought it was a little mean-spirited at the time. But on the other hand other player choices had already been made regarding Abe's condition. Some of them were obvious like the one to prioritise his roll result over his health. Some, like talking to Dr Erunt, can't really be blamed. Some of them had been made threads and threads ago by dropping the star. The Starfall means that the city doesn't pull punches and not everything is fair.
But still, I actually agree with you on this point. That was an unforeseen combat mechanic. It probably should have been done at least once before so some people might have known it was coming.

This is also a valid complaint. Part of it is that I am aware of my own terrible update pacing regarding this quest and I don't want to let time waste. The other part is, again, the Starfall. That choice sacrifices much of the opportunities for more peaceful or comfy times. Everyone is your enemy.
>>
>>2603964
>So I don't think I 'get' this complaint.

it took hours for Abe to change, yes? Because we got at least an hour sleep and an hour meditation before he changed enough to go attack people. Two hours is enough time for SOMEONE to notice. Furthermore if his arm was wounded I doubt he would carry us alone, or for the entire time, as someone who was not hurt could do so faster, better, and without pain, and he could get it checked to make sure nothing was wrong with it. He already saw how that woman was straight up dissolving, he had to know something might be happening.
>>
>>2603994
>it took hours for Abe to change, yes?
Oh I see now. Okay, I can clear this up. It was not a gradual transformation. It took hours to properly take effect but once it did it was very quick.

>Furthermore if his arm was wounded I doubt he would carry us alone, or for the entire time, as someone who was not hurt could do so faster, better, and without pain, and he could get it checked to make sure nothing was wrong with it.
It was a very small cut, it did not impede in any noticeable way besides pain. Also he didn't support Orion the whole time, Alex and Beatrice also helped. Abe did have time to get it bandaged up in the interim. You see the bandages. And unfortunately most people can't recognise the symptoms of this. It's not something people know about.

For the record, the Abe treatment deal in the Collective Effort would have involved an early purging benediction that would have failed but would have revealed the presence of something quite nasty. Abe would then have had his arm amputated.
This did not happen and without such a thing confirming that it was indeed incredibly bad news, Abe was not going to cut his arm off over a suspicion. Especially after over an hour passed with no apparent ill effects.

>But the tooth was still embedded, yes?
No. The fake tooth pierced the skin, delivered the accelerant that was concealed in a hidden cavity inside it and then Abe pulled it out immediately. It then took quite some time for the accelerant to both travel to his side and then agitate the pseudoflesh. If he had taken the tooth in his chest the effects would have been much more rapid and would have occurred during the battle.

>And witches have enough ties to something that creates wickless ness for Bea to at least perceive it.
Beatrice still has witch-scent, this is true. She's used it to sniff out soil in previous threads. But smelling dirt, even in other people's bodies, is the most basic application of it. The more advanced and subtle sensory capabilities have been ruined by years of shoving gunpowder into her nose and mouth.

>There is no need to rest. A simple meditation will do. And then you march on the Thorn.

There is only one course of action you can take. Only one response you can make. How could there be any other suitable answer to this atrocity? The Thorn, and all within it, shall burn. And from its rotten heart you will take back the shard that they stole!

“Beatrice. Burn it. Tell the others to come back down and tell them what happened. Tell them that they should be ready for another march.”]

She looks up at you with dry eyes.
“And what will you be doing?”

“Meditating. I spent all my flame on that thing.”

“He had a name!”

“Yes. And it wasn’t me who took it from him.”

And with that, you turn and march back down the stairs into the armoury. You don’t look back. And when you get down there, when you are alone, you throw your staff across the room. It bounces off the wall and you leave it where it lies. You sit down instead, wick in hand, and think of nothing.

It is easier than it should have been to clear your thoughts. But in the end, the only thing that matters is the burden on your back and the sun in the sky. All else is trivial. As long as your quest is complete, all other prices may be paid.
Not that that will you stop you from visiting yourself upon the Thorn, of course. That will just be justice plain and simple.

>Wick: 6/10
>Spark: 6/8

By the time you rouse yourself, you can smell smoke. The rooms above it are full of it, the upper trapdoor sealed to prevent it from getting out. There was so much of it that, as you climbed the staircase, you were having trouble seeing it. But you do not let it avert your eyes.
This is Abe’s pyre.

The second room is more smoke than air and while that is stinging and uncomfortable, so is what happened here. Air purified by flame cannot harm you. Through the cremation, what was once sullied is burned down to a pure ash.
The redcloaks are waiting for you, figures in the thick smoke standing around the remains of the beast. They looked shellshocked and you can’t blame them.

“I have nothing to say,” you tell them. “It has happened. No words could make it better. I’m going to the Thorn. You don’t have to follow me if you don’t want to, I won’t make you fight two battles in one day. That is all.”

You deliberately avoid any further contact with any of them as you prepare yourself, sliding on your remaining armour and gathering up your weapons. And when you climb back up those stairs to the highest floor, you find all of them waiting for you. Not a single one left behind.
“We won’t be coming back here,” you say. “Once we step out, we never return.”

You swing the hatch open and climb up into the courtyard above, the smoke rising with you. By the time you are all out, the smoke has come before you and flooded the small street. When was the last time anyone here knew smoke? In the confusion that results, it is easy for you all to slip away.

“Orion. Orion! Hey!”
You turn to see Beatrice running after you, breaking free of the solemn procession.

“What is it?”

“Just how are we actually going to do this? What’s the plan?”

You hadn’t thought of a plan.

What part of Collective Effort did you not understand? Everything that each character does contributes to the ultimate result, which is why Abe bashing heads actually mattered to Orion being able to stop the fourth Engine's attack at the end.

Winning by a higher margin just means that, however indirectly, enough bullets and firepower reached someone to kill them before they could do their thing.

I can see where the confusion comes from. The way it's written makes it feel like the individual fights are separate from the battle, even though the Collective Effort is an abstraction of everything so they're all interconnected. More of fluff than its own set of mechanics between choices. I was confused back then too, which is why I needed Ouro to clarify for me.

“Chaos,” you reply. “If it worked for the Consortium, it should work here. The star should already have them panicking. If we can just bait them out, they might leave the Thorn less defended. Didn’t you say yourself that they didn’t have many guards?”

“They let me go! And how are you going to get their attention anyway?”

You just turn and look at her for a moment.
“Isn’t it obvious? It’s you. They know where you are and we can use that to kill them. Wherever you are, they will think the rest of us are us well.”
If there’s anything you’ve learned about the Workshop from your own experiences and Beatrice’s story, it’s that they seem to act as if nobody else is as smart as they. You don’t know if they’ll anticipate a trick from you.

“So what? You want me to just loiter around on a walkway nearby or something? Seems liable to get me killed or...or worse. These aren’t people who are worth fucking around with!”

“Yes but if we don’t deal with them now, they’ll never stop. Nobody else has on us what they do! And don’t you care? Aren’t you even a little angry?”

“I am. Dear fucking God I am. And don’t you ever say that to me again, Orion.”
Her voice is suddenly tight and small, a hand clutching at the base of her throat. At, beneath her coat and her shirt, her brand.
“If that wasn’t the real doctor, if she’s still out there...you don’t even want to know what I’d do to her. What I’d do to myself.”

Considering her history, that last statement could be taken in several alarming ways. But as strange as it is to think, you have faith that she will keep her feet on the path.
“I’ll admit that to use you as a distraction so close to the Thorn is dangerous. But if there was a place further away that would still panic them to see you approach, that would do just as well.”

Beatrice doesn’t look too happy with the idea of being used as bait. Or with anything at all, right now, an emotion you can understand.
“And before you say it, I don’t want to go march up to the Golem witch or anything. That sounds stupid.”

“I had a different idea in mind actually. What do you know of the Chemist?”

“Those fucking tonics? I wish they didn’t feel so good. But that’s actually a good idea for once, Orion. Do you reckon them smelling me right outside his house will freak them out?”

“Very much so. If the Bridesmaid can be trusted-”

“And she can’t.”

“If she can be trusted about this one thing, the Chemist is already well defended. It’ll be dangerous.”

“More dangerous than what you’re doing?”

“Maybe so. You won’t be just dealing with them though. For this to work, it needs the Thorn to reinforce them. Are you sure you can handle that?”

“I’ll be fine on my own! I have a few tricks up my sleeve, you know. But uh...do you actually know where they keep him?”

Anyway, I don't trust the snake as far as I could throw her and I wouldn't even be able to life her because she's a fat, fucking snake made of god dirt/flesh but she's our best shot of finding the chemist, rather than just blindly searching for a VIP in a city on high alert because we 9/11ed the fuck out of this place and killed most of the leaders of the whole operation, but we also shouldn't send anyone else to do it either.

>all these anons still buttmad about the Starfall
That decision was IN character for Orion. He is a zealot, a desperate one at that. And desperate times call for desperate measures.
>>
>>2604416
The Collective Effort was for escaping the Thorn troops, not for saving Orion's Wick. If a Collective Effort can have arbitrary side effects that the players can't predict from the fluff, especially this severe, then the player choices become meaningless.

>can't predict from the fluff
First of all, you don't NEED to be able to predict what rewards you do for doing extra good. It's perfectly viable to try to expend as little resources as possible to just get a success, and part of the nature of the quest is the uncertainty of outcomes, like rolling so well that the QM didn't expect to need to prewrite a scenario for doing extremely well.

Second, I'm not saying we HAD to do this or that thing to save Abe. There were multiple things we could have picked that would coincidentally have saved Abe. We just didn't pick them. And that's that. It wasn't necessary to create a specific choice for deciding upon the fate of his life, it wasn't important enough for that.

If you wanted to vote in such a way as to save Abe, you should be planning things 2 more steps in advance. You'll learn how to do it as you get more experience with quests, or you could bring the topic up and get others to discuss. Questing is a medium where doing such a thing makes the whole BETTER.

Aren't you contradicting yourself, anon? How could one make plans while being unable to predict anything?
I voted to limit the Wick expenditure specifically so that we had some left for Abe. What use does such planning have if expending less Wick absolutely unpredictably leads to expending all Wick?
>>
>>2605175
Are you arguing that Orion was too stupid to ever save Abe? Because to be fair, if he knew how to treat the gargoyle wound when it happened, we wouldn't be here.

And it takes more WIS than INT. Like knowing that Erunt was going to pull some shit and just killing her immediately.

Is hubris counted under low WIS or WIS malus?
>>
>>2605176
You've got a point there. Within the mechanics, there WAS an expectation that no more of Orion's resources should be expended for the Collective Effort.

I run a fair bit more on genre saviness over specific wording of mechanics, because mechanics are easily changed in a quest.

But I don't think it's a strong enough case for whatever solution might appease the feeling of unfairness.

>>2605178
maybe a WIS disadvantage roll?
>>
If it's worth anything, I won't pull another surprise Wick cost like that in a Collective Effort ever again. I stand by everything else that happened but now with the benefit of hindsight, even I think that was a bit of a cheap shot. But that's the thing with quests. It's all first-draft and whatever happens, it happens and you don't get a chance to go over the whole narrative later and pick out the bad ideas before anyone sees them.
Everything else though, I'm fine with all that still.

Anyway vote called. Updates will resume in an hour or so.

>You’ll visit that monster yourself. Beatrice won’t come with you for that of course.

“I don’t know where he is. But I know something that does. The Bridesmaid owes me more than that.”

Beatrice looks skeptical.
“Are you sure she’s going to keep up the deal after what we did? We kinda crashed a…”
She stops, aware of the constant crowd passing all around.
“We did an unpopular thing. People are fucking pissed.”

“It told me that it was fine with it and that the deal was still on.”

“What? When?”

“In the Senate Hall. I saw it. It was like a dream. We spoke. I didn’t want to but we did.”

Beatrice’s skepticism has now transformed wholly into worry.
“The Bridesmaid came to you?”

“Yes.”

“Inside your head? With a voice that only you could hear?”

“Yes.”

“And did she...try to teach you anything?”

“Yes Beatrice, I am aware of how this sounds.”

“Good. Because you know, it sounds like a fucking Whisper! She’s giving you the witch treatment, Orion! You’re being groomed!”

“It doesn’t matter!”

“And why not?”

“Because, if that’s what it’s trying to do then it doesn’t know what it’s dealing with. I will never accept an offer like that. Not even if my own life was at stake.”

“Huh. Guess you’re stronger than me. But what if that lamp-post was at stake? What if it was the sun?”

“I cannot see that situation ever arising. And what’s more, you have some nerve to be worried about saving my soul, Beatrice. Find your own first.”

“It’d be...it’d be fucking sweet if I could go a day without the world throwing that in my face. Just don’t go doing anything rash while I’m gone.”
She pauses.
“I’d hate to see another go.”

“And the same to you. I need you to promise me, Beatrice, that you will stay as safe as you can for this.”

“Only if you promise the same.”

“I will.”
“I will.”
Both of you lie.

***********************

The Paper Bridesmaid, that house of sin, is as grotesque as ever. The gambling hall in the first room is but a taste of what decadence lies inside. The elevator trip up is as surreal as ever, the high-speed cage rattling by and offering only glimpses of ever more stranger and depraved things. Sex, drugs and violence stream past as if they were racing to offend you with the bizarrity of their forms. The monster at the top of the tower surrounds itself with every human dalliance and vice.

And yet its own chamber is dark, empty and utterly bereft of all of them. Shapes skulk in the cold dark and something rears its head as you take your first step onto the carpet of shed skin. Abandoned scales crunch beneath your feet as you walk towards the true Paper Bridesmaid.

It is as you left it, a veiled woman in a tattered bridal gown stained with black. She lounges on a low couch sitting before a glittering horde. And atop that is the giant snake, white and black also, seen on a different level of things than the woman.

One eye sees woman. One eye sees serpent. Neither are correct.

“Bridesmaid. I have come for your end of the deal.”
The vast sunroom echoes your voice back a hundred times.

“Lamplighter.”
The woman’s veil flutters and the snake’s jaws move in perfect synchronicity. They leave no echoes. The Bridesmaid’s voice swallows all other sound.
“Orion. Thank you. When I first asked you to kill my friends, I didn’t expect you to take to the task with such ferocity! Of the six fellows I once possessed, five are dead. I very much doubt Rene will stay dead however but still! An excellent job! And to think all of this was possible due to my kind favour in raising the bridge.”

You make sure it’s finished speaking before you try to say anything. It’s pointless otherwise.
“He won’t stay dead? What do you mean?”

“Oh, I suppose you’ve earned the right to know. Rene founded the Sable Imp Fellowship, remember? Him and his lover. And one of the many services to come out of their dirt mine is raising the dead. I’m sure he’s on the express list.”

“Right. There are so many blasphemies in this city that I almost forgot that one. And do you know how they do this.”

“Oh gosh, I don’t have a clue.”
The Bridesmaid is lying to you openly with such a lack of disguise that you can only assume that it intends you to know this. The woman reclines, lying back on the couch with her bare feet up on the side.
“I wish I could have watched you work. You know I enjoy that. But the only time you’ve set foot into my gaze recently is...that time you were being crushed by a bunch of metal arms. Embarassing. I’m glad that didn’t kill you or else we’d all look like fools.”

“I don’t do this so you can be entertained.”

“Oh of course not! You have ideals! A burning hope! A sacred duty! A smouldering face that’s aged just the right way and a particularly handsome set of abdominal muscles! These are just some of the qualities that made sit up and take notice when those dice were first cast onto the dirt. I want to see how it ends. How you end. So fight the good fight. Be the last ember left burning. But remember the fate the world has for embers.”

“I am warning you, Bridesmaid. Today has not been kind to my patience. Get to the point.”

“Even less tolerant of my wonder than usual, I see. What happened? Something bad? It must have been. I’m sorry, I really should have been up to date. I really, really, really wish that I cared about that at all. But unless that sorrow drives you to do something incredible and heart-breakingly heroic or, maybe, drive you to take your shirt off...I can’t say I’m all that bothered. My condolences.”

“It would help if you wept or something. I love your stoicity but sometimes it gets in the way. I want to see you cry, Orion. I want to see what drives you to that. And now you’re making an angry face and you want to hurt me but you can’t. You also want to leave but you can’t. Because you need me to tell you something. And for as long as I keep speaking as I do now, you can’t raise even a whisper. But don’t worry. I know what you want. It’s what I promised you and you certainly did your part. The location of the Lamplighter before you!”

“That’s not what I’m here for.”

“It’s not? What do you want then?”

“The location of the Chemist.”

“Oho! And what do you need that for? Answer me this and I will tell you of the other Lamplighter as well.”

“You owe me that already!”

“Yes but I’m upping the ante since you want something from me I never promised to give. So call or sit down.”

>>
>>2605310
Whoops. That should be 'I *may* have fallen victim to an inconsistency'. I don't recall stating that it didn't after all.

Orion generally starts to burn when he uses the lamp-post for something. But even just holding it out for long enough in order to intimidate a bunch of sky monsters counts as a 'use' eventually. He can't hold it unveiled indefinitely as long as he's not doing anything with it, that'd be silly.
>>
>>2605312
That makes sense. My personal headcanon was that as we fed the Lamp shards it was growing stronger and thus more dangerous to use. Thankfully we won't have to worry about that, then.
>>

I will choose to believe this as well. One shard may have been uncomfortable, four (?) is outright dangerous.

>>
>One reason is that the tonic could come in useful. Blasphemous, perhaps, but useful.
>There's another reason, but you'll know soon enough. Like the star, all will be able to see.

There’s no damn way you’re going to tell them about your true intentions. What does it take you for? Just because you have a deal doesn’t mean you are under any illusions regarding the Bridesmaid. This thing deserves judgement just as much as every other target and in due time, it shall receive it. It doesn’t even matter that it gave up a shard freely.
“The tonic is useful enough on its own. Controlling the source of it would give me a grip around the Workshop’s throat.”
That itself is a perfectly valid reason. The only reason it isn’t something you would do is because you plan on executing the Workshop immediately. There’s no need to starve the beast.

“That makes sense. I don’t believe you but it makes sense.”

“There is another reason. But I don’t want to say it aloud to anyone just yet. All will see soon enough.”

“Oh my. Should I be worried? But considering how pleasant your last surprise was, I suppose I can extend you some basic faith. And since I am your biggest fan, I will let this pass. Perhaps it’s because I feel a certain sense of kinship? We are more alike than some would suggest.”
The snake bowed low, the top of the reclining women’s legs sliding straight through its neck.
“Forgive me but I don’t know the earliest reaches of your life but, correct me if I’m wrong, you’re a Lamplighter and that probably means that your family life is an absolute disaster. Is this true?”

“I fail to see the relevance of this.”

“Snatched away from your family at a very young age, no doubt. I can relate. My parents died long before I was born. I chewed my way out of the womb of a corpse. And after having so vigorously midwifed myself, I was born into a graveyard. How long are we going to dance around this, I wonder? Is it because as long as you have at least a little reasonable doubt, you can ignore what it means to speak to me? No matter. Just know that I like to see at least a little of myself within people who are particularly disasterous.”

“Tell me about the other Lamplighters. And then tell me about the Chemist.”
There is no value in rewarding the Bridesmaid’s constant tangents. In fact, you doubt any of them are anything near as tangential as they seem. Responding to the constant flurry of random remarks just guides the conversation down the way it wants it to go.

“Oh, so direct! There is truly no defence against the attention of an unsubtle man. There are three. I remember that, I saw the same fortune told back in Augustine that you did. You are the second. The third has either not yet arrived or has evaded my sight and my ears quite incredibly. But the first! I know of him. He came to town years ago, full of flame and vinegar. And do you know what happened to him? That was a rhetorical question by the way, I’m still not letting you answer. Like a fool, he ran straight for the most obvious of the shards. The Iron Duke. Dear dead Marcel. But he didn’t have the companions you did. He had one, at most, and I never actually saw them so who knows if they’re even real. I’m afraid the Duke did not take his objection as fatally as he did yours. No instead our brave little Lamplighter got the absolute utter shit kicked out of him. Marcel really was an impressive fellow at times. And the Duke told him that if he was so willing to live out his life a slave to dead gods, he could earn a slave’s death too.”

“He’s dead?”

“No. He’s a trophy. Don’t know if you noticed but Marcel had a bit of a taste for such things. I can tell you where his prison is. What’s left of him resides there.”

“And what of the shard he had? Who stole it?”

“Now that’s the strange thing. He didn’t seem to have one! Really it was only until I heard that prophecy with you that I realised he ever had one at all. I’m guessing her must have hid it somewhere but I don’t know how or where. Something for you to ask him yourself.”

“Just the location will do. And the Chemist?”

“All business, aren’t we? He lives at the top of a tower not too far from the Thorn. The Workshop has men stationed around it at all times. Let me draw you a map.”
It does no such thing. Instead the woman just sits up and retrieves a sheet of folded parchment from where it had been stuffed down her dress. A detailed list of directions to the Chemist’s tower are already inscribed upon it. It’s the same serpentine cursive scrawl as the invitations you once received, right down to their being double-dots upon the i’s.
“Keep it. I do have another question for you however.”

“You may ask.”

“Permission was not required. Regardless of your intent towards the Chemist, this is not an easy nut to crack. Nobody’s just walking up to him, not by a long shot. But fortunately I do have a brilliant method to assist you, should you take it. Are you aware of how often people have requested the Senate to force the Chemist to take on an apprentice? To make it so that people’s chips weren’t bet all on the same hand?”

You think back to your conversation with Savina earlier.
“I’ve been told.”

2/3
>>
>>2605363
“It’s never worked. I really don’t know what goes in on there but sometimes they make the oddest decisions. But here’s something else that you probably don’t know. During all of this nonsense, the Workshop faced significant pressure from its peers, many of whom are now dead thanks to you. They managed to force the old doctor to promise to print out at least one certificate of apprenticeship. He was to sell it to one of them in order to prove that the Workshop wasn’t deliberately monopolising the Chemist. Honestly he really should have taken a page out of Marcel’s book and told them to fuck off. Nobody ever bothered the Duke about something as petty as monopolies."
The snake curls around the pile of miscellany for a moment before returning with a thick sealed envelope held in its mouth.
“But he wasn’t stupid either. He signed the apprenticeship certificate. But in the end he made sure it was sold to the only one of us who really didn’t care about the tonics. The only neutral party. Me. Do you see where I’m going with this? All I have to do is fill in a few blanks and you or whoever else you want could march right in as the Chemist’s promised apprentice, arriving just nine years out of date.”

“Seems like this would out you as supporting me.”

“Seems,” it says non-committedly. “Do you want it or not? I can fill in any name and face you want on here.”

Just catching up from the end of the fight at the previous session and I want to say - I knew that voting for Abe to not get help was probably a death sentence.

You would have to be idiotic to have not guessed that the wound wouldn't just cause him to bleed a bit.

But ignoring it was in character for Abe. He's been seeking death this entire trip and neither Orion nor Beatrice took the time to correct him on seeking redemption instead.

Which is fine, because neither of them is seeking redemption either so I wouldn't expect it to come up.

They were all far harsher on themselves than they were on others, which is especially impressive for Bea and Orion since they're coffin faced bastards towards others as it is.

But Abe was the one who was willing to forgive others, even Bea as a Witch. Which literally nobody else including Bea could accept.

Hopefully Bea and Orion can think about Abe for a moment long enough to allow themselves some small measure of acceptance for their sins, and they won't blind themselves to the tragic irony of Abe only caring for others leading him to hurt them deeply by literally dying from shame since he never let himself believe he had any worth left.

It's nobody else's fault for not having enough wick or not shooting a bitch or for being protected by Abe when he was suffering so much more.

Abe did this to himself because he was so wrapped up in his own misery that he never thought there was anything more to himself.

His death was tragic, stupid, and oh so perfectly appropriate that how could I have not voted for him to let it come unchecked.
>>
>>2605177
Actually I'm glad we didn't metagame that and that Orion stood by his decision to drop the Star and not try to hide his responsibility.

It characterized him, for me, as not being blind to the cost of his actions beyond just the destruction of a Holy Relic. He made a hard decision based on his Faith that it was the right thing to do, not because he thought it would benefit him, but because he believed it was necessary to save humanity by returning the Sun.

He refuses to turn away from his own monstrous actions or deny them, and by doing so he claims the moral authority to judge others for their monstrous acts without bias as being necessary in turn to oppose not for himself but because he believes in a future where people don't have to compete with monsters just to survive.

There do seem to be a lot of similarities between the earth powers and the wheel god, they both exist in multiple ways at once, they're both mortal in some sense of the word, they both transubstantiate their essence, and they both lend their power through their symbolism (witch signs and runes).

Sure we'll probably have to put up with them trying to kill us later, but it's not like we're innocent either.

They originally did their honest best to help Abe.

Bea is a Witch, I can't blame them for recognizing that she isn't human and treating her like a lab animal of a ferocious breed.

>Decline.

The offer tempts you for a moment but after a moment’s thought, you shake your head. You don’t trust that this offer is as innocent as it seems and besides all that, Beatrice doesn’t actually need to infiltrate the Chemist. She just needs to get close enough to spook the Workshop into thinking that you’re all coming for their most prized possession. Anything to draw the forces of the Thorn away from your true target.

“No. The offer is good but I will not take it.”

“This is generally where you thank me for at least making the offer in the first place, Lamplighter.”

“No.”

“So be it.”
The serpent swallows the envelope.
“It’s a shame, that would have been very helpful for getting close to the Chemist. Which makes me wonder what you’re really doing. Care to enlighten me?”

“You don’t make innocent offers. I don’t know what madness you intend that apprenticeship to lead to but I want no part in it.”

“You’re a fine one to talk of such things, Mister Stardust. There’s witches and imps out there that have killed less innocent humans than you. I wonder how many, exactly? Oh wait is it most of them?”

“I thought you liked the starfall.”

“I did! And that I approve of it should honestly be a warning sign but I digress. The point is you can’t really accuse me of spreading chaos. The whole city is in disarray right now because of you.”

“Good. It deserves it.”

“Nice. Now, I do believe that concludes all the relevant business you came here for. No. No! Don’t leave just yet! Turn your feet around and face me once more. I said we finished your business. My business isn’t done. Believe it or not Orion, this relationship is a two-way street. So I, out of the goodness of my heart, have decided to inform you of something drastic.”

You reluctantly turn back around and walk back towards it, having started to walk back to the elevator during her answer. The layer of snakeskin slip treacherously beneath your feet.
“What is it?”

“A warning. Mary, mother of witches, is coming for you. She has held a divination in which she questioned particularly loathsome children of earth and those children provided her with a name and a face. She survived the starfall and now she knows exactly who are you. So just take that into consideration. Watch out for golems. Aso watch out for literally anything else witchy. She can do it all.”

“Why are you telling me this?”

You were going to have to kill her anyway at some point. You’re actually lucky she’s coming for you instead of you having to confront her in Dinu’s skull. In that realm she’s more or less invincible. But because she is hunting you down, she’ll ambush you up here in the city, where she is only mostly invincible. I hope you can draw comfort from this.”

“Is that all?”

“Not even a thank you, yet again. Not once. Yes that’s all. You may leave, that is fine. For as much as I love our meetings, I also quite enjoy seeing you go.”

You have nothing more you want to ask her right now. Nothing that wouldn’t deepen your already regrettable deal anyway. With this as with the star, the end justifies the means. There is no weight that is not overturned when the world itself is on the opposite end of the scales. But that doesn’t mean you have to talk to this thing needlessly either.

“Goodbye.”
And with that you turn to leave.

“Wait!”
The sounds of your footsteps cease as the Paper Bridesmaid stops you yet again.
“One final word of advice before you leave. As things are now, you will certainly find yourself exploring the depths of the Barrow Burroughs. The Sable Imp Fellowship and their mines. It is the fate of your quest, written out in the earth.”

“They are a target, yes. What of it?”

“While you are down there, you might meet two others who are...distinct. In some aspect, they approach myself. You’ll know them if you see them. It’d be for the best if you didn’t speak with them and especially, most importantly, do not let them out. Please. I’m not asking this to fool you but because the two of us may never speak again before that moment. This is for your own good and for the good of everyone. It would be a shame for your story to end that way.”
The usual mocking tone to her deep voice is gone, stripped away by apparent sincerity. You’re not sure to make of it.

“I’ll keep that in mind.”
And with that, the elevator doors close behind you. You avert your eyes from the blasphemous displays as you descend, your thoughts sinking back into the mire of the past. The Tangle Workshop will burn for what they’ve done. The Thorn shall be Abraham’s true pyre.
But it’ll only work if both halves of this plan perform it perfectly.

>It is totes different from when we destroyed the Sun and caused creatures of darkness to kill countless numbers of people

That is part of what you are forgetting, every single person alive in Dis has in some way celebrated or taken benefits from the death of the Sun. An untold number of people have died outside the walls of Dis due to these people, so ohno a few more wubbies getting smashed to take down the people that killed the Sun may be regrettable, but in the end it more than balances out with the ultimate goal that we have.

So easy to forget about all the early threads and whose fault it is that all those cities are abandoned and there are so many roaming ghouls isn't it.

The gray skies are darkening even further as the broken sun sets. This shall be Dis’ first starless night. You walk among the people of the city, struggling your way through the crowds and heading up through walkways and bridges, taking shortcuts through towers as you work your way upwards. The lamp-posts, some still filled with green flame and some now cracked and empty, watch you with blank judgement.

It’s hard enough to push your way through a crowd when you’re on the wrong side of the five foot tall, it’s harder still when they’re panicked. The starfall had accomplished everything you and Orion had wanted it do. The people of Dis, the city at the end of the world, are running scared.

You pull the Inspector’s cap further down over your eyes as you make your slow way forward. From the way the people talk, most seem to be blaming you. Or well, not you as in specifically Beatrice, gunpowder witch and vigorous self-harm enthusiast, but everyone seems to know a little something about ‘those Sun cultists’. Pamphlets are passed around, word of mouth is spread.
Taking a shortcut through a floor halfway up a tower that is acting as an impromptu junction for at least seven different bridges, you hear words crackling from a set of speaking machines set up upon the roof like you had seen in the Consortium Tower.

”...but there is no madness more contemptible than a man’s belief in a myth of his own making. The Sun Temples have been well known to foster fanaticism before and it is time that we addressed this. Their beliefs are so dogmatic and primitive that they are a natural breeding ground for violence. It is inherent. They do not produce righteous folk but men with the minds of animals: rabid, destructive and incapable of civilization. Look at the barbarians outside. What cities do they have left now? They squabble in poverty and are unable to stop fighting amongst themselves to even approach the prosperity we have here. We should never have allowed a religion imported from the worst parts of the world to take root here in the first place. They must be…”

You don’t know who that is but you hope that one day you get to shoot him in the fucking face. That’ll teach him to call you violent!

Your name is Beatrice Montgomery and right now you’re doing something that is, if you look at it logically, really stupid. But what else is new? If you wasn’t for stupid decisions you wouldn’t be here today. You’d either be an old woman rotting in some shithole or dead. But instead you are perpetually young, shackled to a group of people who hate you and your favourite hobby is poisoning yourself. Life’s a bitch like that.

1/3
>>
>>2609415
You’re taking a roundabout way through Dis that according to the directions Orion gave you, should eventually take you to the tower that the Chemist lives at the top of it. You don’t want to take too straight a route in case the Workshop realizes what you’re doing too early.

But boy oh boy, when they smell you or however the fuck they know where you are and they see that you’re outside their beloved Chemist, no doubt with Orion and all the others in tow (you had to stop yourself from thinking ‘Orion and Abe’), they’ll come running. And after that you’ll...hopefully not die. You’ve lived too long to die now.
But on the other hand, if they grab you and act like they’re going to take you back to the Thorn you’ll bite down on the barrel of your pistol yourself. Fuck them. Some things are worse than death.

And you know what? Fuck this whole city too! Bunch of bitches crying about a few thousand deaths, as if that didn’t happen and worse back home constantly! Where were the soft hearts of Dis when humanity was dying?. But no, you take a taste of what happened to your people and give it to them and all of a sudden it’s an ‘atrocity’ and a ‘disaster’. Fuck ‘em.
You try to ignore the fact that through the Starfall, you’re still fulfilling the primary role of the witch.

You’d still rather not care about them though. That’s supposed to be Orion’s job, though he never did that too well.

So let those Thorn arseholes come. The gunpowder is strong in your blood today and you know that for a fact because instead of feeling like weak garbage, you feel like jittery heart-attack garbage instead.

>Beatrice works along a dice modifier scale that is constantly being applied to all her physical actions save those related to shooting. This scale runs from -6 to +6. Taking gunpowder normally alters her modifier by +2, a bonus that will eventually flip and reverse to a -2 penalty. Snorting gunpowder does the same but by a +4. If left alone Beatrice tends to stabilize at a -2, her default state of feeling like absolute shit. The lower the modifier the worse she feels and if she ever hits -6 she falls unconscious and possibly dies in her sleep. The modifier going into the positive is also unpleasant, prompting brief fits of hyperactivity and strained heart activity. The higher the modifier goes into the positive, the quicker it will decay and flip into a penalty. Beatrice gains 2 charges every time her modifier changes by 1 in either direction. These charges can be used for a number of shitty techniques that make her feel bad and also shooting her gun which makes her feel good.

>Current modifier is +2.

You’ve got your pistol in your coat pocket, a purse full of gunpowder, a face full of bruises and a body full of death. You’re combat ready!

2/3
>>
>>2609419
What you’re not ready for however, is to be so intent on listening to the speaking machine that you run straight into someone. Whoever it is doesn’t budge an inch and instead you are sent sprawling face first on the ground. Sure, add some more bruises to the ones already pooling painfully around your body. Welcome to the world Beatrice you dumb bitch.

“Oh no! Are you hurt?”

The woman offers you a hand. You smell the earth in her stomach and pull away reflexively, struggling to your feet your own damn self.
“No, no. I just look like that normally.”

“You’ve got blood running out of your eyes!”

“Yeah, I’m doing all kinds of drugs. The real bad ones too. Stay away.”

The witch, for that is what she is, doesn’t do this. She’s tall, probably, and with long brown hair drawn up in a loose ponytail. She has a disgustingly helpful expression on her crooked face.
“I thought I smelled something awful. Like a witch but dying. I didn’t mean to straight up run into you but whatever’s happened to you, I’m sure I can help!”
Her shadow, itself a Shade, reaches over and pokes at yours as if curious about why it isn’t moving.

You glare her straight in the shoulder and square your shoulders.
“It’s none of your business.”
Oh fuck ,now your nose is bleeding just a little.
“And puppet that fucking thing! What are you doing, letting it roam about in a place this crowded? It’ll bite someone’s toes off!”

“Oh she’s fine. But I can tell you’re not alright. I don’t know what happened to you but it’s okay. Was it one of those Wheel cultists?”

What happened to the vaunted territoriality of witches? Are Dis-bred witches just that more socialized? Regardless it looks like you won’t be shaking this one off so easily.

“But-”

“You’re very transparent by the way. It’s flattering but I’m not interested in other women.”]

“What? No, I didn’t mean that!”
But it’s too late. The confusion generated by this exchange has already given you the opening to slip away into the crowd. The upside of your height is that while crowds might lead to a lot of bumping and getting tossed about, they also hide you quite easily. Nobody’s picking you out of one.
“Wait! Whatever you’re doing isn’t good for you!”

“No shit!,” you call back. May the Wheel God curse kindly souls! Sticking their noses in shit that doesn’t belong to them like they’re so special. They act like they understand you but then they go and transform into hideous monsters who you then have to watch die. It sucks. You hate them so fucking much.

It occurs to you that you could have used that woman to spread some fairly accurate ‘misinformation’ about the Tangle Workshop or something but it probably wasn’t worth causing a scene. And currying the public opinion was only a plan before the starfall. Not much point trying for it now.

After that the rest of your journey is uneventful. Orion can’t give you a signal of any kind so you can only hope that he and the redcloaks have assembled where they’re supposed to be. The Chemist’s tower is a fancy one, one of those big Second Age residential spires of steel and glass. Centuries of Dis-borne smog has darkened it now but it’d still probably shine if there were any proper sunlight to reflect. Banks of countless windows lining the side stare out at you as you stand on the bridge passing by it in the lower section of the city’s canopy of walkways.
The Chemist should be at the top, with the whole top floor to himself. And from your extremely quick glance from a distance, you can’t see any obvious security anywhere. It might be inside the building.

How best are you going to go about spooking these idiots?

>Just loiter here for long enough. Just the prolonged proximity alone should get people from the Thorn running.

>This is just the fancy front. If you go down into the Mazes or the Undertowns where the bottom floors of the towers meld into the city, you should be able to find a servant's entrance.

Just being this close should have sent forces from the Thorn into a frenzy, especially if they think you’ve got Orion and the rest accompanying with you. So you should be thinking less about how you should be getting in and more about how you plan on getting out of this fucking mess. What are you going to do when they show up?

Well, provided you stay on this walkway thronging with people, that places a limit on just how far they can go. They probably won’t try to gas you or do anything like that. Which means that they’ll likely chase after you with whips and knives. You can live with that. The only thing of theirs you truly fear is what Erunt did to you the last time you were their guest. Yes, she saved your life but also almost robbed you of your will. You were becoming her doll and considering what you’ve seen of the Engines, you’d rather die.
You’re glad she’s dead.

Your mind drifting back to the present as you keep watch, you encounter a problem with your current plan. Just running away when they show up might not be good enough. What if they’re satisfied with just keeping you away from the Chemist and go back to the Thorn? They’d catch Orion and the redcloaks in a pincer attack! You can’t let that happen. You need to run but you need to run towards the Chemist. You need to keep them occupied for as long as you fucking can.

Alright. Now that you know that, it seems easy. You know what to do. You walk quickly towards the closest entrance into the tower before you, loitering outside the glass doors and staring idly into the foyer beyond. Just how many people live in this thing? They must all be rich as shit. And since anyone who has gotten rich in Dis is, through inaction if nothing else, complicit in what it is...you’re going to feel less bad about anything you do here than you were with the star.

Then you prepare the next stage of your master plan by, slowly and in full view of all passer-bys, start to pick your nose. Not something you’ve really done in the last forty years but fuck it. It’s surprisingly essential to what you want to do here! And with your finger concealed up you nostril, you jab it up and drive the fingernail into internal tissue. You know from long years of personal experience that the inside of the nose is one of the most easily bled parts of the human body. You feel the blood well up but using your finger as a plug, you don’t let any of it seep out.
1/3
>>

Instead it overflows and seeps down into your mouth and throat, a tide of thick and septic sulfur. You let it pool in both your nose and mouth as much as either can hold, the rest washing down into your throat and making you feel sick. More sick. Whatever.

It looks like someone inside the tower has taken notice of you but it’s not whatever guards the Workshop has posted around the Chemist’s penthouse. A doorman opens the door and confronts you, the extremely shabby looking vagrant loitering outside one of the tower’s snazzier entrances.
“Oi! Clear off or-”

You scream theatrically, not even caring about how much it grates on your constantly sore throat. And as you do so, you pull your finger free and open the floodgates. Pushing air through your nose results in an explosive spray of blood all over the pavement and then, a moment later, you open your mouth and vomit blood everywhere. The blood pools at your feet and fills the air with the stink of iron and gunpowder, the vital fluid already thicker and clingier than any human blood should normally be.

“Fuck!,” you shout, straining your lungs to be as loud as possible. People are already staring, blockages forming in every walkway and bridge passing by this set of doors. You’d wager the people of Dis enjoy a good piece of street drama as much as anyone.
“Motherfucker! Don’t try to silence me you invert! Look at what he did to me! I drank just one of the Chemist’s tonics and now I’ve got blood coming out all over the place! Every orifice! I’m going to die! He’s fucking killed me! I know you’re up there you coward! And the Workshop is in on it! They don’t test! They don’t even ‘ave a witch look them over! They’re too busy selling us fucking poison shit!”

The doorman tries to grab hold of you so you book it, the people parting in front of you in order to avoid touching you. Now all you have to do is set fire to the blood trail and run in either direction down towards the Mazes and the Undertowns below even them. You should be able to get into the bottom floors of the tower from there, which’ll keep the Workshop boys scared-and oh fuck!

The walkway you’re on stretches between two different towers, making a stop halfway to detour towards the entrance of the target tower. Either direction can get you down towards the undergrowth of the city, using the tower’s internal stairwells if nothing else. Either way should be fine.
But you can see wood-armoured men jostling their way through the crowd towards you from one direction and from the other? The other end of the walkway has people clearing out left and right, doing anything they can to avoid coming near the solitary figure rhythmically plodding towards you. A man-sized and shaped clump of dirt with a carved oval stone for a head. It wants you. Of course it fucking does. Everyone wants you except your friends.

Well, it looks like the forces from the Thorn have showed up! But they weren’t the only thing tracking you down! And now you’re caught within a rock and a hard place and you’re not sure which one you want to chance. On one hand, the hard place might lead to a fate worse than death. On the other, the opposing rock has literally gotten up and can beat you to death and you can’t really stop it!

It’s times like these that make you so happy with all the choices you’ve made in life.

>Sock the doorman in the face and run into the tower!

So in regards to your previous plan about getting down through the towers and into the Mazes and the servant’s entrance? Yeah nah, fuck that! You aren’t willing to tangle with either of these! So instead you pivot and race back towards the front door as fast as your legs can carry you.
The doorman is still staring at the golem so you punch him in the back of the head just before you collide with the door. You bounce off them but keep your footing as the doorman is distracted.

>Charges: 12

You rip one of your gloves off, exposing your charred hand to the world. And on top of your index finger, a tiny flame dances. Your pilot flame. Only problem is, you’re not Orion. You burn. This always hurts. The flame flickers with your breathing, your lungs serving double duty as a bellows and just as the doorman begins to turn around, you exhale.

>Charges: 10

Gunpowder-laden breath pours past the flame, turning it into a small streak of flame that is carried straight towards the bloody ground! It doesn’t have much force behind it with the amount of charges you used but that’s fine. You don’t want an immediate detonation.
You slip in through the doors as the blood ignites. Hopefully that’ll trap all those fuckers out there with one another and they can just die.

You run through the fancy foyer, spilling blood all over the marble floor. The woman behind the desk just watches in shock. The two other doormen, on the other hand, do not. They advance towards you purposefully, pulling back their capes to show scabbards by their sides.

Fuck.
How do you get to the rest of the building from here? Where are the stairs? And can you really outrun a pair of men on the stairs? Your heart’s already beating like a drum, your legs will give out long before they ever do!

“Help!,” you blurt out. You don’t have to try hard to sound panicked. You can feel the real deal welling up inside of you. You’re not equipped to deal with a golem. Nobody on the side of righteousness is. No weapon harms them, no fire burns them. There’s no nearby earth at least so if you completely broke it apart, it wouldn’t be able to reform but besides that...the only other way would be to directly manipulate the curse powering it. And of all the few things that can touch a curse, none of it is holy. There’s nothing you can do.
“There’s a golem! It hit me! It’s gone wild!”
You’re hoping that golems are still feared even in Dis. Imps and witches maybe not but you’re pretty fucking sure you can’t socialize a golem!

And it pays off. The guards look to the doors with shock in their faces, gazing out onto the flame-ridden walkway filled with a panicking crowd caught between hammer and anvil. You walk past them but then stop when you hear the sound of a sword being drawn from its sheath. You turn to see one of them pointing the sword at you.
“Hey! I got hit by that thing! I need help!”

“It’s not our problem,” he says coldly. “You’re not a resident, you’re not a guest and you’re certainly not important to be in here. Get back outside and quit bleeding all over the foyer.”

“Out there? I’ll die!”

He just shrugs. You watch as the other one draws a bar across the glass doors, locking it off from the desperate people outside. Damn things must be tougher than they look.
“Not our problem. The moment that thing passes and we can unlock the door, we’re throwing you out. Just be happy it’s not out a window instead.”

Everyone’s has to be fucking rude these days.

>”So what’s your plan for when the golem knocks those doors down?”

You back away as they advance, slowly moving towards the doors at the end of the room. You aren’t used to keeping someone alive for this long. But you also know your own limits and you’re sure, given your current condition, that you can whip your pistol out of your pocket and shoot him dead before he ever finishes swinging his sword.
If you had a proper holster instead of just keeping it in your coat pocket you’d do it even quicker but there’s no helping that. They’re not a thing that you could wear in Dis anyway.

“So what’s your plan for when the golem knocks these doors down, huh? You going to throw me out then? Will you do that before or after it rips your arms off?”
Golems will stick to their instructions as best as they are able but they have a natural malevolence towards Man that their mindlessness wouldn’t lead you to expect. Anyone getting in that thing’s way won’t live to regret it. Come to think of it, you can already hear unpleasant sounds from outside as the golem collides with the crowd trapped between it, the Thorn squadron and the barred doors. It sounds like someone beating a flank of meat with a tenderiser.

“It’s not coming in here,” the guard says but he sounds shook. You’re getting to him. “Why would it come in here?”

You’re not going to do anything as fucking stupid as admit you’re the target. But you don’t have to.
“What do you think it’s here, you fucking invert? What else is there here but this place? You’ve got so many rich fucks holed up in here, at least one of them has earned a golem or two! They’re coming for a resident!”
You mean really, what’s more likely? A golem chasing after some random sick lady or being sent to intimidate or murder someone with money or influence? A remarkably inefficient method of assassination for sure but certainly an effective one. They aren’t fast but they never tire and they never stop. Anything standing between a golem and its target wouldn’t remain standing for long.
“You can’t stop that thing. You know neither of you can do shit about it! So what are you going to do? You can do your jobs and die for nothing or we can all get the hell out of here!”

“Fuck it,” the other doorman says. “I don’t get paid enough for this!”
He bolts for the staircase, the receptionist hot on his heels.

The one with his sword out still looks conflicted however. He doesn’t lower it.
“You’ve got something to do with this, don’t you? I just know it.”

You sigh and pull out your pistol.
“Congratulations on your intuition. Here’s your prize: Get the fuck out before I pull the trigger.”

“Bullshit! Nobody can fire a gu-”

You walk past him as he falls to the ground with a hole in his head. The rest of your body can be on fire, sick, toxic and falling apart but when you’ve got your hand on your pistol, it stays steady. It’s the only part of you that can be relied on.

You walk over to the elevator doors and push the button, still pondering the gun in your hands as you do so. The two of you have spent so many years together now, with it serving as both weapon and holy symbol, that it can be hard to remember that you weren’t born with it in hand. You still remember the first time you saw it though…

*****

They dumped you on the cold stone, leaving you breathing hard and gasping for air. The brand is fresh at the base of your neck, a ring of pain around your shoulders that you can’t stand. You can smell your own burning flesh. And with it comes the terrifying weakness, the withdrawal of divine strength from body and mind. The connection between you and the soil has been severed. The gods have been parted. No longer will they answer your prayers.

You steady yourself with your right hand, doing your best to at least stay on your knees. It has to be your right. All of the fingers on your left have been broken. The pain from them joins the pain from your brand and the hundred little aches running all up and down your body from earlier. They had beaten you. You hadn’t been expecting any different either.

“Witch.”
You looked up at the waist of an armoured man standing over you. His burgundy cloak still has your blood on it. It even got the golden spoked wheel. He was Lamplighter, Witch-finder and hero of men. And you, the accursed monster rightly brought to justice. This is probably what you deserve.
But even so, for some reason, all you can focus on is the holster at his hip. The top-break revolver resting in it was a big one, the kind with a kick. The kind of big iron that would be on the hip of a hero in the kind of books your governess used to confiscate from you. It was flashy and modern and it was the kind of gun you had seen yourself carrying when you had dreamed of being a Lamplighter. Reality had stripped you of that dream long before you ever became a witch.
“What do you have to say for yourself?”

Dizzy and delirious, you said the only thing that popped into your head.
“Nice gun.”

He punched her in the mouth.

****

You wake from your brief reverie as the elevator doors behind you open, revealing the cage beyond. This one is done up all fancy. It even has carpet! You quickly step inside and draw the doors shut. There is a long set of buttons that you stare at uncomprehendingly.

Where the fuck are you even going now?

With just a moment’s thought, you push the button and let the cage start rattling upwards. As high as you can go! Golems are heavy sons of bitches so it should be at least a little difficult for it to walk up the stairs. Or so you hope. You don’t have much experience with the things. Even in the bad old days you’d never come close to making one. A golem doesn’t just need incredible knowledge and power to be made, every single one is also a curse. And who could have that many curses in her heart?

And if it follows you...well, that team of men on the walkway were almost certainly the Thorn’s reinforcements, the ones sent out in reaction to your appearance. Those guarding the Chemist himself are likely still up here. It seems to you that if the golem follows you up and collides with the Chemist’s security, you can’t lose. Every outcome is good!

But as the elevator goes up, you come down. The jitters in your stomach settle down just a little, your blood thins and your heart rate slows. You’ve been riding this last pinch of gunpowder for a little too long.

You’ll do just fine with what you’ve got right now. Now, assuming that the Chemist has the top floor all to himself, you should get off before that. That’s why you jabbed the button a few ones down from the highest one. With any luck, this should put you a few floors below the target and you should be able to use the stairs the rest of the way. You won’t be dumped straight into-

The elevator stops and the door slowly opens, a hand encased in a wooden gauntlet ripping the flimsy thing open the rest of the way.

>Charges: 8

He falls back with a shattered helmet and you step out of the elevator, nudging his corpse to the side with your boot. You remember when you first saw the lacquered wooden armour of the Workshop soldiers. It had seemed laughable at the time but however they grow that shit ends up with it coming out harder and tougher than any unruned metal plate. The only reasons you didn’t have to splurge on an explosive shot just to crack his shell was because he was so fucking close.

The hallway is empty but you bet it won’t be for long. Everyone living up here past those scattered doors must have heard the gunshot. And while this man might have just been a sentry, all of his buddies up higher closer to the Chemist are going to come running now.

And here’s the problem. You’re not sure if you’re going to have enough shots. Even if you manage to down each one without using power to increase the strength or accuracy, you only have enough left in you for 8 more shots. You’re not sure if your companions ever really noticed but you ran out of bullets quite some time ago and you’ve never had the time or resources to smith some more. Lately you’ve been firing on pure witchcraft alone and as impressive as that is, it eats through your reserves pretty damn quick.
You’re still feeling pretty amped, you suppose you could risk taking some of them on fist to face but you’d really rather not. The physical strength the gunpowder lends always leaves you aching the moment the buzz wears down. And to tell the truth? You’re not a huge fan of being stabbed. You’re not like Orion, who isn’t having a fun day unless he’s gotten at least three ribs broken. Your body has a hard enough time repairing what you do to yourself, let alone adding anything else on top of it.

But this is the path you chose and that path demanded that you be up here, fighting a whole bunch of morons because your friend is dead. They’ll be here soon.

Oh, fuck all of this. You don’t even need to really get to the Chemist! You just need to distract everyone and make the Thorn send more men and you seem to have done both of that just fine! You’re not sticking around to gamble on the idea that there’s no more than eight men coming for you.

You don’t have to fight any of them! You can just hide in one of these lesser apartments and wait for the mess to sort itself out. Orion should be very busy right now. By the time you get back, the Thorn will be aflame.

You try the closest door handle but it doesn’t turn. Fuck. What were you expecting? You pound on it instead, your fist bruising painfully from the knock.
“Oi! Open up! Let me in!”

“No! Go away!”
Oh, so there is someone in there. Excellent.
‘I don’t know who you are but if you think I’m opening the door yo-”

>Charges: 7

You shoot through the lock. Normally that’d be extremely dangerous but you don’t have to worry about ricochet. The door swings open to reveal an old man in a dressing gown staring out at you with an open mouth.

“Hello! I’m just stopping by. Thank you for letting me stay here.”

“What? How about you suck my dick-”

He’s interrupted by you stepping past the threshold and jamming the barrel of your pistol in his mouth.
“Only if you suck mine first,” you whisper. “Now here’s the deal. Spit this out, die. Make any weird noises, die. Do anything I don’t tell you to do, die. I assure you, my finger is on the trigger.”
You kick the door shut behind you.
“Now walk with me, bitch.”

You lead him gently back through is entry hall and into the bulk of his apartment. It’s small but real fucking fancy. White walls, white carpet, benches of white marble. It almost looks Second Age. You know it can’t be but maybe that’s the deal. An imitation of an older style, sized down for the likes of you and him.
“Nice place you’ve got here. I like the colour scheme. White. It would be a shame to mix some red in.”
Satisfied he’s got the message, you draw back your arm so he’s no longer sucking on your gun. You keep it aimed at him though.
“I’m going to go drag this little couch in front of the door to make it look like it’s closed all proper like. You be a good little boy and go get me something to drink, alright? Something stiff.”

He nods frantically as the two of you part ways, him retreating to the pristine kitchen while you drag the little invert-seat to the door. The lock you shot in half was internal so as long as they don’t notice the bullet-hole, they shouldn’t be able to tell. And hopefully they’ll be in too much of a rush to find you that they’ll inspect all the doors.

The man is sobbing when you get back, sitting on the ground and crying gently. You just give him a nod.
“Where’s my drink?”

1/2
>>
>>2615752
In shaking hands, he offers up an open bottle of whiskey. Looks like he’s had a taste. You snatch it from him and make a show of sniffing it appreciatively before tipping it up and sculling the whole litre. It burns the mouth but much less than half of the other things you’ve jammed up in your face and when it passes the base of your throat, the burning stops. And then spreads to the rest of your body.

>Charges: 12

What can you say? You never actually learned how to appreciate fine drink.
Not as combustible or as quick as gunpowder so it won’t give you a kick but it should still top you off real nice. You throw the bottle over your shoulder and let it shatter on the floor.
“Nice. Sit down with me, new best friend. Just sit here and I’ll sit there and we can be all quiet until I think everyone’s gone. Yeah, go on, get up. Get up. I’m not going to shoot you for no reason. Just sit right-oh fuck, you’re naked under that robe. Great. Sit down and shut up. If I say a question, nod or shake your head. Got it?”

You haven’t done any home invasions for a while, you’ll admit. Mostly just in the bad old days. But damn, you’ve still got it. The two of you are now sitting opposite one another amidst the opulence.
“Alright. Is it really just you? Do you not have any servants? Any slaves?”

A shake of the head.

“Saves the extra shot I guess.”

Any further whispering is forestalled by the sound of shouting coming from the hallway beyond. Sounds like that corpse’s friends have arrived. You sit in silence and wait for them to run up or down the stairway as they continue to search for you.

But that doesn’t happen. The footsteps don’t die down. They’re pacing the hall. Are they actually going to check the doors? Shit. Well you’re not feeling like total garbage. You’ve got options open.

>Out the window!

You rise, keeping your pistol trained on the old man the entire time. The sounds outside aren’t dying down. It’s only a matter of time before they discover the bullet hole in the door and when they do, that piddly little couch wedged in front of it won’t stop them.
“Sorry,” you whisper to him. “I got to postpone our little romantic evening. I’m sure you’re heartbroken. If there’s anything to learn off this, it’s to be a little nicer to strangers in distress. And don’t tell them to suck your dick. That was a mistake.”

You walk over to the closest window and slide it open. You’re still riding high enough that this seems like a perfectly sensible idea. And who knows? Maybe the old gods hate you so much now they won’t want you anywhere near them and you won’t fall even if you let go!
You ignore how much past evidence there is against this theory and with a cheery wave, lift yourself through the window and onto the ledge beyond.

The cityscape of Dis is all around you. The moment you look down you see it all. Bridges, walkways, spires, all of that and more continuing down forever until they blur into a solid mass. This is Dis! City at the end of the world! A single slip of the foot and the beast would swallow you up as if you had never been.
Keeping your grip on the ledge as tight as possible, you carefully stash your pistol back in your pocket. If that fell out you’d have to start using that gimmicky thing Orion got you from the Iron Duke’s stash. It’s probably better. But you like the one you’ve got. It’s come a long way with you.

You can’t linger here. You need to just get up or down a few floors and then slip in through another window. It’ll all be fine then. You’ll have escaped.

Hole up somewhere AGAIN. That might buy enough time from them searching apartments to get the golem to fight the troops.

Gazing down at the never-ending urban abyss, you decide that you’d rather go in literally any other direction but down. Climbing up is easy, it’s just what climbing’s supposed to be. Climbing down is much more of a problem. \
And you’d really rather not have a repeat of what happened a few days ago, that sickening moment of freefall and the sight of Dis spinning all around you with nothing beneath your feet. There’s not even a sky-rail this time to break your fall.

So instead you stare up at the dark sky above and, reaching out for a higher ledge that you can just barely reach, you begin to climb upwards. Not a problem. It’ll be easy.

Your fingers are just brushing the edge of the ledge above you when the window you’re standing outside is slammed open again! You look down and see the old man from before but before you can do anything, he reaches out and pushes your left foot right off the edge!
“Fuck! Hold on, wait!”

But it’s too late. Your hand reaches in vain for the ledge now just inches beyond your grasp and without it to brake you, the momentum lets you slip from the window. And there for a brief moment you are frozen. Nothing above, nothing beneath. The side of the building is slowly drifting ever further from your desperate fingers. You don’t even feel angry or afraid. You just don’t have the time. The only thing running through your head as you stare at your own reflection in the windows just a little too far from your grasp is...shock. Frozen helpless shock.

And then time catches up with you and you know what? Turns out that greedy grasp of the earth still wants more to do with you.

You drop like a stone.

And just like that, before you’ve even started processing the fall, it stops. You stop. You don’t hit anything. There’s no force, no impact, not even the sensation of whiplash or momentum denied. You were moving and now you are not. Preservation of force can go fuck itself, apparently.

You are hanging in the air half a dozen floors below the open window from which you were pushed. You cannot move, you can’t even twitch a finger. Bands of cold pass up and down your body like the world’ worst shiver and for some reason, even though you can quite clearly feel that there is nothing around you, you also feel as if you are resting upon the frozen earth for just a moment. It is a sensation that overlaps and overrides the mere senses.

You want to scream but you cannot. Whatever keeps you from falling also locks every aspect of you tight in an icy grip.

And then your fall doesn’t just stop, it reverses. You fly upwards but again, you don’t feel as if you are being dragged. You don’t feel the momentum or the weight of any of it. You are simply being moved, the purest essence of it without any of the extra trimmings you’ve come to expect. You move upwards past the open window you fell from, past the top of the tower itself. You go upward and over it in a long arc.

And past the tower is, besides the urban cacophony that is the city itself, you see a sky-rail stretching across the air just a few hundred feet behind it. And atop that rail is a single train-car, a stately and antiquated thing pulled by no engine but instead harnessed to a massive green beetle that picks its way across the sleepers. It isn’t moving. It has stopped for you.

You collide with the side of the train. It doesn’t hurt. Ever since the cold grip tightened around you, you have felt nothing but it. Nothing physical, nothing mental. Your mind is still as if you were still in that moment of just having been pushed from the sill. You see and recognise what is around you but neither your brain or heart react. The new sensations just pile up somewhere outside instead.
Whatever this is, it won’t even let you fear it.

The grip slides you along the side of the train until you drift past the beetle, which whinnies slightly as you circle past its feelers. There’s a door at the front of the railcar. You are moved into it with enough force to knock them open.

You drift down the middle of the railcar, past row after row of seats. The seats are occupied, each and every one of them filled by an animate earthen doll. Carved stone heads turn to watch you pass. Golems. It’s full of golems. And you aren’t even allowed to feel surprised about it.

The final set of seats are veiled from your vision, surrounded by a smoky ring of darkness. It moves like a Shade but it has no shape beyond that of a cloak. It ripples as you near it and you are pulled through it, the animate shadow clinging to you in sticky strands.

When the darkness clears from your vision, you are hanging upside-down before the woman sitting in the final seat at the back. And she is...she is like nothing you’d ever seen before. In paintings and carvings yes but in the flesh, not at all. And if anything, the fumbling hands of Third Men artists had utterly failed to represent the beauty of the creature before you.

She is slender, far too slender. The stocky physique you’d long taken as normal has no place here, it has no place within a mile of this impossibly lithe and elegant woman. Every inch of her body seems to either curve or taper towards a point and together it all blends together like a work of art. What little light is left in Dis reflects off of her, her skin a shade of pure gold shot through with traceries of bright silver. A mane of smooth gray hair frames a face that might as well be mathematically perfect, both proportionately entirely wrong for everything you know about humanity and yet attaining a level of aesthetic satisfaction that would make an artist weep and then forsake their craft forever for how could they even attempt to create beauty when they have already seen the pinnacle? The only thing to mar it is the line of thick black witch-stitch that runs straight down the left cheek and even that just throws the rest of it into sharper relief. Jeweled eyes gaze upon you with pure disdain.
She, and she is undoubtedly a she, is wearing a strapless black dress that drives her skin into deep contrast, cupping hourglass curves at least twice the size you’d ever seen on yourself or any other gray-skinned woman. It hangs off her with a grace that suggests that she could make anything look this good. She fills the seat she occupies and more so, her head far outpacing the headrest. She has to be at least eight feet tall.

Her hands are resting in her lap, thin things with triple-jointed fingers that are far longer than they should be. One of the hands is covered in a mess of witch-stitch but doesn’t stop either of them being pressed together in an unknown witch-sign, one that makes it look almost as if she is carrying something And you know without knowing that the grip that paralyses your body and mind is hers. You are in her hands.

She pulls her hands apart and the witch-sign is broken, dumping you unceremoniously into the seat opposite her. You are suddenly awash with sensation, every emotion and feeling that had been delayed by the magic all rushing into you all at once. Your vision blurs and for a long moment, you have trouble breathing. And when the irrational panic fades, it is replaced with perfectly rational terror.

Before you can gather yourself, the woman speaks. Her voice is husky and behind it is nothing but contempt.
“Good evening, troglodyte. I’ve got some questions I want answered.”

And with that, the thread is done. I have just archived it, to be found under the Lamplighter Quest listing in the OP as usual.
I hope you all had fun, will continue to have fun and that it wasn't too sporadic for you! The next thread may or may not be in a week or so but check the twitter for all the most up-to-date thread times and flakes.

Thank you.

Told you we should have
>Hid the old man
>Pretend to live there
>Play the hooker
>Get the soldiers to drink
>Toss them out the window
Then THEY would have to deal with the terrifying second age witch instead!

Looks like team Bad Idea to Worse Idea wasn't so bad after all huh?

Now Orion has to rescue her by storming Dinu's bones naked, using the full force of his Sexy Grandpa powers to seduce her as the redcloaks pose tastefully behind him in a Sentai pose were their naughty bits are carefully covered by flowing strips of red cloth. The secret attack is that he has stuff the lamppost inside of this Lamplighter issued boxer-briefs so when she inevitably pulls them down she gets a facefull of sunlight!

I believe if we come up with the worst possible series of ideas, we can definitely defeat her. Enemies have tried for centuries to kill the Golemist with logical, well thought out plans and conspiracies. When was the last time someone tried unabashadly to seduce her and slap her with a face full of sundong. She will never expect it and I doubt she has any precautions in place for it!
>>
>>2617370
Sounds logical.
>>
>>2617464
Also we got the whole "Forbidden Fruit" thing going for us, not only are we not a creature of darkness and her womb could bear no fruit, we are the closest to a living embodiment of the thing she hates the most. We are possibly her last opportunity to ever experience a true-blue hate-fuck! Not only that, but an Earth-Goddess that she had to beg for centuries to get the name of is basically lusting her snake-bits off over us. So I mean, the plan seems legit!

Also just as a disclaimer, this is obviously not a plan I am actually proposing.
>>
>>2617477
+1, we already got the salt meteor, time for the salt womb.
>>
>>2617489
Hey, worst comes to even worstest pretty sure it would at least earn us a surprise round as she tries to process wtf is happening/vomits at a filthy Grey Troglodyte swinging his suspicious bulge at her. Bonus if we oil ourselves and all of the Redcloaks up first so even the golems feel awkward trying to grab us.
>>
Thanks for running Ouro. Glad those snake eyes didn't make us lose two characters in one thread.
>>
>>2616616
It's almost like she doesn't have the crazily buffed powers Orion does that are perfectly specced against our enemies to let the players brute force through bad planning.
>>
>>2616592
Thanks for running! So it will be just Orion alone again . . . .

Dropping this here so I don't forget it:
Questions to ask Snake-Eyes when we next talk to her:
>Where did Bridget run to?
>Can we have the Chemist's apprenticeship, we changed our mind.
>What are you?
>What's your name?
>Why weren't you in Agatha's picture, were you really one of the Sinners?
>If so, what was your part to play, you left that out. Why were you needed?
>What does Maria want most?
