Finally after two years in the service of the Dark Queen Quintis you have finally been promoted, no more marching through filthy peasant villages administering the Queen's justice, this is your chance to rise through the ranks of her Majesty's armies and become one of her generals, or so you thought.

When we last left Baldr, he had made it across the river with the point squads and was waiting for the rest of the train to cross.

>2 Successes

Following the path the old man was taking, you notice movement in the bushes and shrub trees within the copse of trees.

Pointing to the forest you shout “Heavies shield wall, hit the dirt.”

The heavies instantly close ranks and face their shields where you were pointing. Crossbowmen who could slid in behind the heavies, while others dove off the bank and into the water.

Moments later the air fills with arrows and bolts, crouching behind the shield wall you wait for the impacts.

The shafts skid and bounce of shields, helms and armor plates as the heavies stand against the deadly rain. Then just as quickly as it had started, the rain of projectiles ceases.

The Attack and Defensive bonus are from the Experienced trait that came with Elf War Veteran. Pulling yourself back to the moment at hand you face off against the remaining bandit.

>Last post for the day you lucky bastards

As you prepare to face off against the bandit once more, a cross bow bolt from out of nowhere thunks solidly in to the side of his head and he collapses at your feet. You turn and face the direction it came from to see Grimace’s grimacing face, as he and his men loose more bolts into the now routing bandits.

The forward momentum gained by the heavies push had turned them from an organized killing force, to nothing more than men with scythes reaping the harvest. Bandits tripped over each other to escape, fouling theirs and others footing, slowing them in time to be cut down by the heavies.

Those few bandits that do out run the heavies are quickly shot down by the crossbowmen. In a matter of moments the entire copse of trees is filled with corpses, and the small stream running through it had turned red.

Only one bandit was still alive in that slaughter and he was now coughing up blood at your feet, with a major gash in his side.

“We’ve got a live one here,” you shout to the others as you lean down and examine the wound.

You sure did a number on this guy; the wound in his side was oozing thick, deep red blood. You could also see bone sticking out of the wound, damn the broken rib would make this harder. From the sounds of his labored breathing between heaving coughs, you can only assume you halberd struck his lungs, and that would mean he didn't have much longer.

If you answer my questions quickly and truthfully I can make your passing a simple and painless thing. Do you understand?”

“Good, now who told you we’d be here.”

“The ferry master tips us off when big scores are crossing, we usually just hold up merchants and the like for their goods. We don’t hit military caravans for most part, but with that giant metal pay wagon in tow we just couldn’t pass up the opportunity.”

“Did you and your band work independently or do you have a boss?” You ask.

“Well, we had a boss,” he says as he turns his head toward the heavies, who were finishing off the few wounded bandits and beginning to loot corpses. “But not anymore I guess,” after finishing his statement the bandits coughs up a mouthful of blood.

“You’ve earned your rest.” You say as the man continues to cough. Raising your halberd above your head, you jam it spear point first into the man’s skull and he instantly goes still.

Hearing the rustle of leave behind you, you turn to see a blood soaked Sergeant Monroe, dragging the ferry master by his neck toward you. “Sergeant Monroe, before you go how fairs your squad?” you ask.

“Just scratches mostly, on initial contact we were slowed a little, but we just chewed through them after that.”

“Good, as you were.” and with that you turn from each other.

Leaving the squads to do the looting, you turn from the forest and head back out to the river bank. As you left the bushes and trees you could see that the prisoner carriage had made land fall and the raft was being towed back across. Once you reached the bank, you could see the Colonel sitting on his horse. Noticing you the Colonel shouts “Sergeant Baldr, what the hell happened over there.”

“We were attacked by bandits,” you shout back “They’ve been dealt with now,”

Finding a large stone near the shore, you sit down and strip off your armor to reveal the wound in your armpit. The bandit’s blade had sunk deep, but thankfully it had missed the bone and major arteries. It had however gone right in and poked out the other end leaving you with two holes in your left arm. Taking your eyes off of your wound, you face the river.

Having traveled so many days now, you can only assume that this is the Olung River. The one river that ran closest to the capital. If you could float the whole train downstream, you would reach the capital by the end of today. Finding the boats to do that though would likely take longer than the over land journey.

Looking back across the river, you see the ferry arrive, several men walk aboard including the Colonel himself. Loosening your neck muscles, you prepare to watch the Colonel’s slow trip across the river. It is then that you notice a heavily robed and cloaked figure approach the Colonel and stop at his side. The two share a quick exchange before the cloaked figure disembarks the ferry. The figure then kneels down and touches the palm of its hand to the water’s surface. Suddenly the currents around the ferry calm, making it sit still in the water. Then the ferry cuts across the river’s width quite rapidly leaving a substantial wake behind it. In moments the ferry makes berth at the dock and the men including the Colonel disembark.

The Colonel and two healers approach your position, still a little surprised at their sudden arrival, you take little notice of the two healers as they tend to your wound. Standing before you now the Colonel asks “Alright Sergeant, now tell me everything that happened.”

After going over the whole story with the Colonel, he nods thoughtfully before saying “So these were just your run of the mill bandits who thought our prisoner transport was a pay wagon, damn fools. You said that the ferry master was the one who would tip them off, where is this man now.”

“He is currently being held by Sergeant Monroe sir, he and his squad are tending to the enemy dead in the forest.”

“I see,” he mutters.

“I we also managed to recover the ferry funds sir,” you say as you return the coin pouch to the Colonel.

“Excellent work Sergeant, you may not be the best at laying plans, but you have a sturdy head on your shoulders.”

>Ask the Colonel who that cloaked man was, the one who aided their journey over the river.

How big of a deal is this kind of magic in universe?
>>
>>2666611

Magic of all types can be performed by all different kinds of people. No element is truly easier to use than others, but magic in this universe while plentiful, is hard to both use and master.

To answer your question more directly, the person being able to use magic is not a big deal in and of itself, but their control and mastery is surprising

“Thank you sir, sir if I may I have a question.”

“Yes Sergeant,”

“Who was that person just now, the one you helped you get here so quickly.”

“Yes, he is our company mage, and before you ask no, you probably won’t get to meet him. The only reason he is showing himself now is because I want to get all of us on one side of the river quickly. After that he’s going to go back into hiding, I can’t risk him being spotted and taken out before a real fight starts.”

It is then that the other squads emerge from the stand of trees. Patting you on your now bound shoulder, the healers say “You’re good to go Sergeant,” before taking off toward the squads.

Getting up to follow, the Colonel says “You are and your men are relieved from picket duty tonight Sergeant, enjoy.” With that he follows the healers.

Looking back to the river, you can see that the opposite bank is now devoid of troops and the ferry now sat bobbing slightly in the waves. Among the now massed troops on this side of the river, you could see neither hide nor hair of the mage.

Rising to your feet you walk to the river’s edge and wash the sweat from your face, before turning back and heading toward the squads.

As you approach them, the Colonel finishes speaking with them and has one of his aids takes the old man off of Monroe’s hands. Departing their company the Colonel returns to the men massed at the dock.

“So, what was the haul,” you say as you walk with Monroe and his men to river bank were they wash the blood off of themselves and their equipment.

“Decently enough,” said Monroe washing his face, “probably more than we’ll ever scrounge up fighting the rebels.”

“I got some nice rings,” Gap said wiggling the three fingers he had on his left hand. Each one had a silver ring on it.

“I think we got you beat,” said Grimace as he and his men walked up behind you. In Grimace’s hand was a jewel encrusted gold chalice.

“What fucking idiot brought that gaudy thing with him to a fight?”

“Bandits are stupid people; I pried this from the hands of one who was trying to pray his way out of the forest.”

Chuckles erupted from the heavies as they finished cleaning their gear. Then all together both squads and you headed toward the half set up camp, to have the evening meal, compare loot, sword notches, and injuries.

After a halfway decent meal, the heavies retire to their tent, exhausted from the day’s events. They are soon followed by the crossbowman leaving you alone awake.

Stepping away from the fire, you head over to the prisoner wagon. “Selenas, are you awake?” you whisper into the carriage.

Hands shoot out from the carriage and grab the collar of your armor pulling you in close. Valenca’s face appears from the darkness “You listen here asshole, leave Selenas alone. I don’t know what you did to her, but whatever it was I will undo it you hear me. She was a kind hearted and bright person, before you took her. She would have done anything to help out us, her friends, but now she won’t even give me the time of day.” At her last statement Valenca’s voice cracks. “She just sits there, looking out the window, or reading that damned book. “Bullshit,” Valenca spits “The long term effects of this rebellion would be to free the people, and Selenas knew that. She didn’t draw her own conclusions; you just brainwashed and forced her to those conclusions. The only thing I'd like to push forward would be the idea of asking a small favour of our Queen. To have Selenas "executed" and then put under our jurisdiction. We'd have quite the hidden card up our sleeve, since the main hero bunch would be incensed to act faster, and we can use their hesitation when they see her again to strike them down.

>>
>>2676146
The throwing Valenca under the bus plan is dumb anyways.

Lets be genre savvy here. The dark overlord (overlady?) will probably grant us, the loyal minion some sort of boon along with whatever power or responsibilities that will make us more useful

Plus, trying to change the story to save her is a bad idea (Never lie to the overlord), and will make it seem like we just want to get our prick wet.
>>
>>2676188
I was planning to explain everything, and not lie to the overlady, officially there is only one hero, she has to punish someone or else she will appear weak, we convince her to punish Valenca instead of Selenas arguing that we can make something good(bad?) out of her.

We never said we were going to lie to the overlady.
>>
>>2676311
We can eve use the boon you mentioned to try and get her under our custody, but that is all conjecture too, because we don't know what the overlady has planned
>>
>>2676311
Selenas did vastly more damage, at least to the garrison and village in question.

And we don't know if she considers it seeming weak to need to met out punishments. We can figure out if there's a benevolent autocrat on the throne.

In the end, it's up to her anyways. We're some fucking nobody sergeant with fantasy PTSD, and she's the goddamn queen. So politicking too hard is going to get us burned.

Firstly no matter what happens you need to be obedient, look down always, and only speak or react when spoken to. As for the queen herself, I only know what I’ve heard. I will attempt to calm her if I must but you should not do anything. Do you understand?”

Gods are worshiped, and used to give their followers powers, but during the queen's rise to power and expansion, many religions and cults fought against her and were destroyed. While the worship of gods is not prohibited, the creation of centralized churches and hierarchy are frowned upon by most people and they are generally repress by the queen's forces.

You stumble around the fog filled camp, stubbing your toes on every rock and tripping on every snag of grass. You walk in the direction you remember the squads’ tents being in, but you aren’t sure you haven’t been walking in a circle this whole time. It is the sound of Gap, one of the heavies, voice that brings you in their direction. “Has anyone seen my rings?”

“Gap I can’t even see my feet, why the hell would you think anybody saw your rings,” responds a heavy.

“Well it went missing recently, and you guys were the only ones who knew about them, so one of you must have stolen it.”

“First of all Gap, none of us want your damned rings we have our own much better shit. Secondly, everybody in the camp saw you wearing those gaudy things, so anybody could have taken it. Finally, you probably just dropped them when you tried to put them on your missing fingers.”

“I did not pu-,” sudden silence from Gap while you walk in the direction of their voices. “Ok I may have put one of them on a missing finger, but that doesn’t explain what happened to the others.”

You nearly run into Gap as he appears suddenly out of the shrouds of mist. “Ah, Sergeant have you seen my rings?” Gap says as he turns and sees you.

>No, I haven’t. Forget about them we are about to move out.
>No, but I can spare some time to help you look.
>No, Where is the rest of the Squads.
>Yes, some crossbowman was bragging about some cool rings he found.

“No, I haven’t. Where are the others squads at?”

“Of course the Sergeant hasn’t seen them you idiot,” a hand reaches out of the mist behind Gap and slaps him on the back of the head. “Forget about them already. Sorry for him Sergeant, The rest of the squads and the other Sergeants went to go see the Colonel.”

“Thank you solider; keep your eyes and ears open this fog is making me uneasy.”

“It’s making us all uneasy sir.” The solider mutters as you take off in the direction you remember the Colonel’s tent being in.

You leaving behind the two heavies you quickly become surrounded by the fog once again and the fear of losing your way starts to creep in on you.

>3 Successes

With the help of your helmet, you manage to see a better than most in the fog. As you walk your foot steps on something metallic. Bending over to examine what you stepped on you see rings, two silver and one gold, these must be Gap’s missing rings. You pocket them for safe keeping and then continue on in the direction of the tent.

Moments later you hear curses coming from up ahead. Upon approaching you recognize them as the voices of Sergeants Monroe and Grimace coming up from behind you ask “Need some help?” The two men jump, Monroe spins and you soon find yourself standing at the end of his sword point, while Grimace and snapped is crossbow up and was aiming it at your head. Sudden recognition and the two men relax “Gods Sergeant Baldr,” breathed Monroe “You scared us out of our wits.”

“Sorry,” you respond “You two look almost as lost as I am. Where are the squads?”

“They were supposed to be right behind us, dammit.” Responded Grimace sighing he continued “Well they’re big boys; they will last without us. Sergeant you seem to be seeing better than any of us in this fog will you take us to the Colonel’s tent.”

“Sure,” you answer simply and you lead the two men, who stick close behind you through the fog.

Moments later, your foot contacts a buried wooden stake, nearly tripping you. Following the rope line attached to it, you find the canvas wall of a tent. Circling around it you find the entrance flap pulled aside and inside the tent you could see the Colonel leaning over the map table. It is then that his head rises to recognize you, “Enter gentlemen.” Both the sergeants pass by you and enter the tent. “You as well Sergeant Baldr,” the Colonel says and you walk in as well.

As soon as you pass the tent flap it closes, and the heavily cloaked mage walks around you to stand at the Colonel’s side while you take your position around the table. Turning to the mage the Colonel says “Julian, enlighten these men as to our current situation.”

In a hoarse but young voice the mage begins “As I’m sure you have noticed, we are in the middle of an extremely thick fog. This fog is not natural, it is being produced magically. This by itself would be not be cause for concern as no mage could maintain the fog for too long and if we were going to be attacked, it would have happened by now. So, we can only assume that whoever or whatever is creating this fog merely wants to slow us down. That is what I would say, if we could exit this fog.”

It is here that Monroe shoots the mage a confused look “What do you mean we can’t exit this fog. If I walk out of this tent in a straight line, I should walk out of it eventually.”

“But you won’t, even when I rode the river downstream to the capital I kept coming back up on our dock here no matter how far or long I traveled. That means the creator of this fog doesn’t want us to leave; ever.

A short silence pervades the tent before you ask.

>So what can we do about it?
>What kind of thing can make this fog then?
>That can’t be it; they have to be after something?

“What kind of thing can make this fog then?” you ask.

“There are three distinct possibilities. One we are dealing with a very powerful mage, which I find to be the least probable as this is hard magic. Two there is a shaman circle nearby trapping us here, which while unlikely is still possible. Lastly and most unfortunately, we may be dealing with a god, most likely a local rain or weather god that after having most of his followers killed decided to attack anyone serving the Queen.”

“Fuck,” says Grimace as he shoves himself away from the table.

“Yes gentlemen,” The Colonel says “We are dealing with a pissed off god who is out for our blood.”

Another silence surrounds the table as the Colonels words soak in.

>So, how do we stop this god?

“So, how do we stop this god? Do we call on another god?”

“If only it were that simple Sergeant,” Julian answers. “Most gods that still exist either hate our guts or don’t care. No I only see three ways out of this. We can try to appease it, or convince it to let us go. We can attempt to trick the god with some kind of bargain. Or we could find a method of navigation outside of the gods control circumventing him entirely.

“And that is why I have called you in here gentlemen. I want your opinions on what path we should take.” The Colonel says looking to each of you.

Which method do you wish to try?

Tricking the God will come back to bite us in the ass.

Circumventing will waste too much time, but is a good option B.

I'm voting for this because I imagine the price to appease it would be too great since we killed it's followers

“Fuck dealing with this god. There has to be a way out he can’t manipulate.”

“Baldr’s right,” Monroe says “We can’t trust this god, better if we don’t deal with him at all.

The others gathered around the table nod in agreement.

“Very well, but I still want to confirm that is it in fact a god we are dealing with here, and not a shaman circle. The Queen will want to know who stands against her.” Turning to the mage the Colonel continues “Julian can you locate were the source of the fog is?”

“Yes, whatever is generating this fog isn’t hiding. I can track it by the massive amount of power it is exuding.”

“Good, I want Sergeants Baldr and Monroe, with his squad to accompany Julian. If it is a shaman circle slaughter it, otherwise leave the god alone and get back here. Understood?” sharp nods from you and Monroe. “Excellent, now get moving.”

Following the Colonel’s orders, Julian, Monroe, and you assemble outside of the tent.

“Sergeant Monroe, where are your forces?” Julian asks.

“Should be at our tent, assuming we can find it.”

“No worries there sergeant,” Julian says and he lifts his hands into the air, clasps them together, and then brings them down in front of him. Immediately the fog around the three of you condenses to rain and falls to the ground, creating a sphere of clear air. “Now sergeant to your men.”

Finding the tent and squad easily now that you could see, you move out to find the god or shaman circle.

>Apologies for not posting much this weekend, I had some stuff come up. Tomorrow we will start with a new thread, where we will meet the cause of this fog.

The walk is tense and quiet for a while, the only sound to be heard was that of jangling metal. With sudden realization, you reach into your satchel and withdraw the rings you had found earlier. Breaking the silence you call out to Gap “Gap, you still missing those rings?”

“Aye, sergeant,”

“Do these look like them?” you say as you show the rings to Gap.

“Aye! Those are it sergeant,” Gap says with visible relief “Where did find them?”

“Stepped on them while I was wandering through the fog.”

“Thank you sergeant, I owe you one now,” Gap thanks you as he takes the rings from you and places them in his pouch.

Shifting away from Gap, you shuffle up alongside Julian. “So, Julian…”
