After thinking about it for a few moments, we decide to summon Sykia, and have her assist the elder by showing the local succubi some of her engine and systems desig, hoping it will help identify or catch the attention of some of them.

"Eh... I really get to stay here?" - she says, quite happy
"You're working, though..."
"Yes yes, but I'm staying overnight, yes!?"
"...I guess so. I assumed it would take a few days..."
"Yes Master, thank you Master!" - our horny yuri predator calls out happily
"Ufufufu~ what a energetic child." - says the elder while covering her hand a little and looking at Sykia with warm eyes

T-this isn't a mistake, right? Right?

Anyway, it is about time we head back to Bastion and have lunch, then we'll head out to explore the local goods and markets.

Thus, we pick up Stella, and she says goodbye to her new friends, before we [Treestride] the group back to her manor in Bastion.

"Lady Stella, you're just on time." - says one of the maids as Stella walks into the house from the garden

Stella clears her throat, and returns to being a polite and feminine ojousama.

"Yes, thank you very much. Please set the table while we prepare for lunch, then."
"Yes, my lady."

Once the maid bows and leaves, she walks back to our side... yeah, walking slowly and gracefully, though her tail wags wags happily all the while.

"Dear big brother, please change into something fresher and join us for lunch in the dining hall."
"Yes, of course." - must resist, patting her head.

Bastion day 1: Spending time with imouto

***

"..alright." - Lyann looks somewhat surprised when we explain our intentions to her, but of course, helps us get dressed all the same

"Cousin, did you think we'd have guests?" - Alard looks at us with some confusion, then looks at Stella - "Wait, are guests coming and I did not know?"
"Ah... no?"
"I just wanted to dress nice for my little sister and dear cousin."
"Well, it does look nice." - Alard nods and congratulates us

The meal is rather light, with a meat-rich cream in a hot sauce, followed by a small pastry.

"Is it not common to have salat here?" - we inquire with some interest and a worry - "You should eat your greens, you know?"
"Uuuh... I really like meat, though..." - Stella flattens her ears a little bit

Well, she's a wolf, so that's obvious, but she should still eat her greens... wait, does she need to eat her greens, come think about it?

If she was more wolf than person, it should upset her tummy when she did so at home, but that was never the case, right? So she probably does need a wider diet than just meat, no matter how delicious it is.

Stella nods nods

"Sure, thank you."

The city is quite the urban center, as it has the administrative buildings for the entire region, and it seems that almost everyone either works in public administration, or supports it by selling food, comestibles and other supplies to public workers.

As such, the city itself produces very little other than banking and trade, but we do notice a scent we hadn't felt ever since arriving at this world.

It... that smell... as we ask our group to head that way, it turns out to be tar. A street is being paved in tar, although with quite primitive machinery, as two huge weights are being moved by a golem-like machine in order to flatten the road.

There's tar pits a few miles from town, towards the north.

That means volcanic activity, though there's no records of any eruption in the region for hundreds of years. A stable thermic exit, then?

Honestly, while tar can be used to seal wooden boats and roofs, as well as in the making of tar paint to coat wood in weatherproof paint, modern science knows it to be carcinogenic, so its use has been reduced to pretty much -only- roads nowadays.

Indeed, it is a cheap material to pave roads with. Definitively easier and cheaper than the way we do it pretty much everywhere else.

I wonder if we should produce wood tar... it doesn't has the carcinogenic agents of petroleum or coal tar, its easy to make through destructive distillation (and it would feel nice to make use of our chemical engineering skills), and has a TON of uses:

Candy flafouring
Medicine (has a powerful microbicidal property)
Alcohol flavouring (always a good business)
Dandruff Shampoo (though I haven't met anyone with dandruf in this world. Truly a fantasy world)
Sauna scent (used in the sauna steam water)
Cosmetics
Tar paint (minus the carcinogenics, so could be used to coat wooden products safely to protect and preserve them)

Honestly, I think craftsmen would enjoy tar pain since it can be tinted with ease, producing an attractive, colored coating that can then be applied to wood products.

I am a bit worried about people making tar pain from tar pits and flooding people's homes with carcinogenics, though.

Anyway, for now, let's try and secure a deal on tar barrels for road construction, and then...

Maybe it could also be used to provide the Hive Fleets with uniquely flavored honey.

I'm pretty sure at least some of the cubi should be interested in chemistry.

We ask the taskmaster to call for the owner, and he invites us for snacks and becverages at his home.

Indeed, it is quite the nice home, with long hallways and flowering gardens. White stone floors and numerous paintings on the floor.
He is also dressed in quite the modern style, and has an outrageous handlebar mustache.

Well, we're using to nobles in this world being attractive by default thanks to their natural charisma and appearance bonuses, but never thought we would meet someone who pulled out that look so well.

No, its just because her charisma bonus is +7 and it affects all charisma-based skills, which includes disguise.

Now I need to make Ren as a samurai. I like that phoenix samurai are basically super specialized in being their shugenja's bodyguards, but Im not sure how that'll go

It amuses me that she can use a void point (she has 2, and they recharge daily) to cause a spell to do subdual/knockout/non-lethal damage so she can still throw fireballs and such at people despite her "vow of non-violence"

"Fireball!" - huge ball of fire flying towards the bad guys
"And your pacifism!?" - Ren
"Its okay. I'm hitting them with the blunt edge of the spell." - Mako nods in a very self-sattisfied manner
"Spells clearly don't have a blunt edge!"

Anyway, im thinking of using this pic for Ren. Which I hate because its THE ultra classic super clichéd, used-to-exhaustion quintessential pic for a phoenix clan samurai

If anyone has any pic suggestions, please feel free to drop them by

>No, its just because her charisma bonus is +7 and it affects all charisma-based skills, which includes disguise.
I meant from a role-playing aspect, since disguising oneself is seen as dishonorable, but saying that the skills were simply from theater and performance, then they wouldn't be questioned much.
>>
>>2683519
Ah, sure. I thought you werent familiar with 3.5
I agree, it really isn't honorable-like, but you need to remember that bushido's sense of honor isn't the same as our western sense of honour.

Basically, it's fine as long as you don't get caught. (I wish I was making that up)

But as a jade magistrate, she's basically a witch hunter making sure noone is killing children for blood magic rituals and/or using necromancy anyway, so infiltrating said cults seems like a perfectly reasonable use of disguise.
>>
>>2683535
>you need to remember that bushido's sense of honor isn't the same as our western sense of honour.
I am well aware of that fact, and I was already working from the L5R's bastardized version of Bushido.
>>
>>2683535
A daimyo going to a court and flat-out lying saying "my servant was nowhere near that peasant's wife" trumps the peasant's word 100% of the time unless there was someone even higher up the social ladder to point out that the daimyo is lying, and ONLY THEN would the daimyo lose honor.

Then again, i guess it does also depend on the individual and his/her clan's idea of honor, to some degree.

A scorpion will happily swear "I didn't do it" for his honor even while holding the blood-dripping blade over the flesh body, if it helped his clan or the empire at large.

Anyway, can you help me with the pic, please?

>>2683557
>L5R's bastardized version of Bushido.
Ah yes, the hilariously romanticized western opinion/idea of Bushido... well, like I said, it depends on the clan and the individual, no? Like in the example, if she infiltrates a maho cult and destroys it from within, i don't think anyone will bat an eyelash at the fact she disguised herself to do it... well maybe a lion would... not sure about a crane.

A scorpion would give her a pat on the back and a candy as a "good job!" prize

We explain to the owner of the tar farm that our countrymen have a dislike for what we consider illegal slaves. Meaning, slaves who haven't come from crime, or whom have been 'poached' in the wild.

Even if the local laws in Bastion allows for slave breeding, to our countrymen's ideas, their brand of slavery is distasteful, extremely so, and thus they will likely reject products produced by such slaves.

"That is why, I am willing to pay a premium for products so long as they are free of bred slave labour."
"I see, its a difference in ideals." - the owner nods - "At that point, I don't suposse anything I say will change your mind."

He seems surprisingly smart. Well, he's right, its not as if we're criticizing his economic sense or himself, but rather showing a difference in culture.

"Well, I could certainly split my slaves to dedicate only criminal slaves to produce the stuff I sell you, would that be alright?"

"I wonder if it would be sustainable, though?" - he stops to think about it - "It is hard work, and salaries would have to reflect that."

Indeed, without mechanization, or at least better tools, it takes a lot of work to get the tar and filter it before shipping.

"Maybe when we have some time, we could look at your line process and streamline it some."

We talk with him for a while, and he agrees to let us take a look whenever we have time in the future. For now, we're paying 10% more for the product as long as no bred slaves are being used on any step of the process.

Of course, we'll have to check from time to time. Randomly. But he seems to understand it.

With that, we're mostly free until we need to escort Kya down town.

"That went better than I thought it would." - says Lyann during our carriage ride back into town
"He seemed a smarter and more educated man than I thought he would be," - we comment as we nod
"Nn." - Stella just cooes as she leans in on us and enjoys sinking her face on our neck, wagging her tail softly
"Stella, don't do that in public, alright?" - warns Lyann
"I know." - replies our imouto
"Good girl..." - gently patting her ears causes her tail to wag wag hard enough to makike thumping noises against the carriage

I wonder what we should do now? I guess we could just head to pick up Kya a bit earlier than expected...

"Stella, how about you show us a bit around town?"
"Eh... is that alright? Stella hasn't been here that long, you know? I am most acquainted with the rockitship docks and the auction house... ah, and there's a lot of event halls... hnn... the park! Stella likes the park!"

Let's try to keep down the mental image of a puppy running around in the park.

"Is that so? Is it a nice park?"
"Yes! Because it has good stands!"
"I-is that so? Because it has food..." - Lyann makes a complicated, yet warm expression
"Nn! A lot of people from all over the region! A lot of different food!"

Is it okay if we think she's a foodie, or maybe even a gourmet, rather than a glutton?

I'm gonna go with foodie. Yup, Perfectly fine for a lady of high society, I think. There's some worry about her eating too much, but Stella is the high-activity type, so its probably alright.

She is about to burst out of the carriage ...and then she remembers she's a proper lady right now, so she instead gracefully steps down, bouncing elegantly on the platform, then the ground, her high heel boots going clop clop on the tro steps to the ground.

"...safe!" -she lets out softly when she stops
"Yes, yes, good girl."
"uuuh... big brother, don't tease me..." - she does look happy, though.

Her tail is wagging.

"Ah, big sister, let me help you..."
"My, Stella is such a handsome gentleman." - says Lyann with a smile as she lets Stella assist her
"T-that's wrong! B-big sis is a meanie, too!" - she inflates her cheeks a little, turns away and blushes

The park is quite extensive, though most of it are round plazas surrounded by greenery, with a few water streams running through it.

This far north, we're a bit surprised to see bright, colorful fish in the ponds, but then we're reminded of the fire fish we saw years ago.

"Are those hot waters?"
"Yes!" - replies Stella - "There's lots of hot springs in this region."
"Hn."

As she promised, there's lots of food kiosks. Practically every little plaza has one or more, and they seem to show a wide array of this region's cooking traditions and styles.

After allowing Stella to stuff herself as much as she wants, we go back to the manor to pick up Kya and accompany her to the tailor.

Finished with Ren's sheet for my saturday's RL game... Sohei aren't as bad as ppl say, I think. The problem is you really need the rokugan/oriental adventures feats to make them work. The fact she can basically self resurrect herself makes me chuckle a bit, though I feel that for a 'monk completely focused on wielding weapons to defend holy sites' and considering they don't get improved unarmed attack or unarmed damage or almost ANY monk skill, really, they really could use a better BAB. Plus what is the point in giving them proficiency with all armor types if they get +2/+4/+6 dex (the bonus grows as they level up) anyway? Why would you use heavy armor if its literally useless to you? I think "light armor and shields" would have been way better, honestly. A +1 dancing shield would be way more useful than proficiency with medium and light armors that you are NEVER going to use anyway.

But yeah, check the feats near the end of the sheet. They make her fun and playable, I think.

Yup, meat is good. To begin with, she's a puppy (she's a wolf, really). And she's the hyperactive tomboyish type, so she needs the protein.

Ah, no, hold on. She's doing a serious effort to be less tomboyish and more ladylike these days, so let's call her healthy.

Yup, she's healthy-cute. Yup.

"Waa~ " - she happily cooes as we absentmindedly start rubbing the top of her head on the ride back

Well, it can't be helped, because she's a puppy.

As we descend, we pay the couch* driver and ask him to wait for us on the side of the manor, since we'll be requiring his services soon.

Unfortunately, Stella's state doesn't has its own stables and carriage*, so we need to hire someone to move around in town.

"Yes, sire. Please send a servant to let me know when to move back to the entrance, then."

With that, we move in and ask one of the maids to inquire about Kya, and let her know we'll be refreshing ourself in our room after coming back from the tar pits.

Well, its not as if we got into the tar itself, but it was definitively hot and humid, so a change of clothes may be a good idea.

"Hmm... I guess you should wear something thicker for the evening..." - Lyann suggests while helping us take our clothes off - "This is pretty far north, so it'll be fresh enough to count as cold soon."

"Thank you love." - we give her a little kiss
"You're welcome." - she replies happily against our lips - "Ah, I think I will stay and take a look at Stella and Alard's finances. They don't seem to have any money income other than going into the local dungeons right now."

Honestly, I think the problem with the oriental adventures classes in general is that the feats are really good, so they made the classes relatively low-tier to compensate, but since you don't really see the feats anywhere else, the result is that the classes are perceived as weak, when in reality they were meant to stand up thanks to the feats.

I think the feats should have been less flashy. That way they could have given more power to the classes themselves.

"...thank you, but are you sure?" - we ask her while looking at her beautiful eyes
"Yes, because I want Eldric to be useful to Master." - she says with a dazzling smile
"Ah..." - that hurts, somehow. A little bit

With a sigh, we lean in and give her another kiss.

"Fuuu~ you keep growing taller and taller. Isn't it unreasonable? You're only 15, you know?" - she protest to noone in particular
"Sorry."
"Then, stop growing!" - she says, perfectly serious
"I'll do what I can."
"Hmph."
"Don't be too harsh on Alard and Stella, alright? Not everyone needs a business. They only need enough to pay for the manor and the house staff, after all."
"That careless attitude is wrong!" - she says while shaking her head and taking a step back - "Or are you planning on paying for the shipyards and orphanage that Stella wants to start from your own pocket?"
"Ah..."

Yeah, we were thinking like that... it's our little sister, after all, so isn't it fine to support her? Honestly, my former life's common sense finds it really wrong to put too much pressure on a 12 years old, after all.

But Lyann's dissaprovingly cold stare looks like its saying "I dare you to say you were," you know?

"...r-right..."
"Alright, then. Ah, I like this scent on you the most..." - she says while choosing a perfume to apply on us once we're dressed on a new suit...

I'm happy she's on top of things, b-but, isn't this the so-called topping from the bottom? It totally is, isn't it!?

Anyway, in a little under an hour later, we're helping Kya step unto the coach, then follow her in and sit opposite her, while Dusk climbs up next to the driver after closing our door.

Eh? Aren't you the princess chaperone? Shouldn't you seat with us? I don't dare object, though.

"Are you already acquainted with a local tailor?" - asks the california golden, winged beauty in front os us.

I know the 'traditional' standard of beauty in the northern continent is to have as pale a skin tone as possible, but her natural tan, gently toasted california surfer-like skin tone seems to ooze health, and coupled with her naturally athletic build, it really gives off a refreshingly sporty vibe, despite her refined and elegant body language.

The feats look really good. They synergize very well with each other and the special Phoenix traits.
They make her a very tenacious fighter.

I played Crane and Iron Crane samurai before, so my help is limited.
>>
>>2697009
Oh i've never played crane. All I know is that they're the best duelists. What else is there?
>>
>>2697032
Duelists and courtiers/negotiators, about equal with the Scorpion.

The Iron Crane was fun to play, because while the Crab usually dismiss the Crane as soft and weak, the Iron Crane (a group of Crane families near the Wall that helped the Crab fight back incursions) are respected as being hard enough to stand beside Crab warriors.

I also used my knowledge of period dramas to roleplay the part of investigator, especially performing autopsies and forensics of crime scenes while taking care not to actually touch dead bodies.

Yeah I was gonna ask about how did you do the authopsies. We're playing with an emerald magistrate and a jade magistrate in the party so we're doing investigations all around, but they usually leave it to their assistants when it comes down to that, so they took leadership to have experts do that stuff for them.

Examining through observation only, no touching. If anything needed to be moved, I used my jitte (since we were a team of Jade Magistrates).
By observing things like wound placement, shape, depth, and angle, my character could work out the weapon used and the approximate skill level of the killer.
By looking at the crime scene and looking for damage to furniture and scuff marks on the tatami or ground, he could attempt to recreate the fight, using knowledge of the victim's own style and weapon to approximate the opponent's actions.
And examining the outside of the body, some poisons can be determined by the way that they kill and cause discolorations on certain parts of the body.

It's not foolproof, and there's a lot of poisons that wouldn't get caught by this method, but it works on well-known poisons.

>a team of Jade Magistrates).
Why do you need a team of those? IIRC, a magistrate has helpers, that have helpers, that have helpers, that have helpers.

Wouldnt having at least one jade magistrate to better round up the group have been better?

Anyway now I want to make Ami and Mai just because. They're not NPCs in the game right now but the more I think about it the more I wanna build them.

I guess scorpion ninjas would be the obvious choice? though maybe a shiba defender would be ideal as well? Im conflicted between the bodyguard side and the ninja side, what do you think?

I always think of Ami like this, at least
<--
>>
>>2697166
Normally you'd only need one magistrate. The campaign, and the QM, was treating them as more like Inspectors (the position, who, again, would normally operate with a team of assistants).

As for Ami and Mai, I would suggest the Shiba. While the Scorpion's stealth would fit in better with them being Shadows, the bodyguard aspect is more important and a Scorpion would be more about sabotage and assassination.
>>
>>2697187

Uhmm... proper samurai/shiba defender or something else?
>>
>>2697198
I'm not sure you could do a hidden defender that isn't a ninja of some kind.
It'd have to be a proper samurai.
>>
>>2697277
uhmm... maybe with vow of poverty i could pull off a couple of monks with shiba school feats since those let them switch places with, and take hits for, their charges, and the vow of poverty seems like it would fit in well with the shadows oath of self discipline and "belonging to their charge" as well.

Plus the fact that after a point they dont need to sleep, breathe or eat, so they can be alert 24/7

Anyway waiting for a second vote but if it drags on without one i guess we'll go with a local craftsman for kya's dress

"If everything else fails, we can certainly turn to an acquaintance." - we reply - "But I think it is only fair that we give the local craftsmen a chance when talking about local fashion, after all."
"Is that so? To be honest, my clothes had always been assigned to me based on tradition, and then adjusted to fit as needed."
"That can't be right, what about your school u- ah right... uhmm... well, I've seen you wearing some pretty cute dresses at the orphanage."
"Y-you think so? C-cute, really!? Those were chosen by Dusk.. no, it would be more correct, they were chosen and also tailored by her!?"
"I see.. she has good taste, you looked quite beautiful in them, yet they also give you a calming and gentle atmosphere. I am sure the children must feel at ease with such a beautiful princess taking care of them."
"...t-there's no such thing!" - she says in a hurry while blushing brightly.

Ah, so she has a innocent side that is easy to tease.

Well, her traditional clothes are quite light. Mostly along the style of a deep cut of cleavage in front with a fully exposed back (because of her wings), or a light breast plate-like cover with tight pants for more physical activities.

Majin aren't meant to do physical work/combat, so their clothes tend to be more for show than anything else. I was thinking on how birds show off their colorful plumeage to attact mates, though I never could decide if in their case it would be the male or the female that showed up.

With birds, its typically the male, and the female tends to be much more 'dull' I think?

*cough*

"Well, I seem to remember your traditional dresses are quite light, right? Will you be alright wearing something more ostentatious and restrictive?"
"Ah... well, if possible, i'd rather wear something that won't keep me from flying... even if I got used not to fly around everywhere since arriving in Albion, being able to and choosing not to is VERY different from not being able to, at all..."
"Must be tough."
"Well, flight for my kind is partially assisted by magic so I 'can' fly without using my wings, but it would drain my MP within minutes, and it would be much, much harder to steer with anything resembling skill..."

Well, so they're something of an hybrid, or is it alright to think of them as hot air balloons with rudder and fans to help themselves steer along the way?

...somehow that seems like a rude but accurate description...

The coach enters the high-end merchant district, and stops at in a designated area.

Dusk easily hop-hovers down from the seat next to the driver, and moves to open the door.

"Is it alright to open the door? I am opening the door..."
" ! Of course it is alright to open the door!" - calls out Kya with a fun, bright clush on her
"Alright... I really am opening the door..."
"Just open it already!"

Kya karate chops Dusk on the head once the horny maid comes into view, making a noticeable dent in her cutesy maid hat, right between her horns.

"Ouch." - monotone
"Hmmph"
"Please let me get off first, then I'll help you off." - we try not to chuckle
"Lewd. I will memorize the young master's lines in my heart, and tell them again to my mistress during her bath tonight."
" ! "
"Ouch." - monotone

We step down, and help Kya descend from the coach unto the street.

The streets are not as well cobbled as those in Albion or Eopolis, and there are plenty of compressed dirt roads, though at least the sidewalks are made in elevated stone.

"There's quite a few shops, so let's just head for the nearest one, then move down the street for a few blocks, and make our way back across the other side of the street." - we suggest

Kya nods, and offers us her hand.

Ah, we can't help but feel slightly uncomfortable while walking side by side with a beauty that is a full head taller than ourselves. It somehow feels like we're out with our older sister... well, against Lyann's hopes and drams, we still have quite a bit to grow anyway, right?

...right?

We offer Kya our arm and walk along with her, drawing quite a bit of attention from fellow pedestrians as we walk along with an exotic, tall winged princess from another continent, and a cute milky-white maid with soft-looking, skin-colored horns, wings and tail in a long, black uniform.

Heading down the street, we look at the dresses in the store's windows. The streets are quite rough, but thankfully the sidewalks are solid and mostly even.

It is rather odd to see wincow displays in this world for the first time, specially considering that the rest of the city looks quite ancient.

"Should we head for a smaller store?" - asks Kya while looking with some obvious dislike at the cute beastkin women being used as mennequins for displaying clothes on the windows.

>I don't approve of their use of people this way either, but it is their custom, for now. (go into the store. All the others have similar displays anyway)

When we first met Kya in Heven, she was more guarded and only showed her Distant Princess side to us. Now that we’ve been with her more, she’s showing us this cute side of herself, and Dusk thinks we’re a good enough friend to joke about us and Kya.
