>Quest Summary (up to chapter 38): https://pastebin.com/9aNStLUp

You end up having to strap the giant tiger to your back in order to carry it with you, but you weren't about to leave it behind.

When you pull up in front you lift Robin off the Rook, then get to unstrapping the oversized toy. Robin bounces impatiently as you work, eager to do... whatever it is she plans on doing with this thing.

As the straps come off you hand it to her and she promptly runs for the door, veering further to the left than she must have expected and crashing into the doorframe.

This attracts Carrie's attention, as she's currently at the door. "Oh my goodness" Carrie says. "Where did that come from?"

"Toy store" You say, as you help the little Canid back to her feet. "We stopped on the way back"

Now back on her feet, Robin holds the tiger over her head with a big smile.

"Quite the toy" Carrie says.

"I got two toys!" Robin says, pulling out the doll as well.

"The Commander was so impressed with her patience that she pitched in to get her another toy" You say.

Robin looks quite proud of herself.

"Good job Robin!" Carrie says, leaning down to give the little maid a big hug. She then looks back up to you. "They're getting ready to serve supper, by the way. You should head up to the dining room sir"

"Thanks. Come on Robin" You say. "Hold my hand so you don't bump into the door again"

Robin hops to, hugging the giant tiger with one arm while her other feels around for your hand. She eventually finds it with some help, and you say bye to Carrie then go on your way.

"You're gonna have to find a way to carry that without blocking your face" You say.

Robin tries awkwardly shifting it around, doing little except tripping herself up.

BtG, sweet! How ya doin'. Smiley?

"Oh... alright, up you get" You say, as you reach down and lift her up, giant stuffed tiger and all. "I'll give you a hand this time, but I'll be leaving tomorrow morning so you'll have to figure something out"

"You're leaving?" She asks.

"Only for a little while" You say. "A few weeks, a month at most and I'll be back"

"Promise?" She asks.

"Promise" You reply. "And in the meantime, Lily and Daisy will be here to keep you company, and Lola will be taking care of you and Liz. Sound good?"

She nods. "Is Hella staying too?" She asks.

"I... actually have no idea what her plan is" You say.

Robin looks down.

"I'm sure she'll be staying for a while as well" You say. "And if not, just give her the sad puppy dog eyes. She's not all that hard to convince"

"Like this?" She asks, giving you quite possibly the most heart-wrenching look you've ever seen.

"Perfect" You say.

You arrive in the dining room, and find everyone has already gathered there. Robin thanks you again, then takes her giant tiger and goes over to the devils....

Not too bad anon. Just in the middle of a job hunt atm, decided to take a weekend to run the quest before I forget my place in it... which is exactly what has happened, so if I take a while to put out a post it's because I'm going back and refreshing myself on things I've forgotten.

You sit down next to Hella, who seems to have taken over "Liz duty". The Serpid is coiled around her stomach, and they're playing some kid of game with some upside down cups on the table.

"Whatcha playin'?" You ask.

"Just switching cups" Hella says, hiding a little pebble under one of the cups and moving them around.

Liz's eyes track one of the cups, but after a few switches you see her lock onto the wrong one. When it comes time to pick a cup, she taps the upturned bottom of the one she was watching and Hella lifts it up to reveal that the rock isn't there. Liz throws out her arms and looks angry, hiding her head under Hella's arm.

"Aww, so grumpy" Hella says, poking Liz in the side. "Grump grump grump"

"She really doesn't take losing well" You say.

"Give it a minute, she'll be back out and demanding to play again" Hella says. "I see you went toy shopping"

"I did" You say. "And you've been busy yourself"

Hella laughs. "Yes, this one can be awfully demanding... not that I mind. She reminds me of Munchkin that way" She says.

"Have you given any thought to what you plan on telling your family?" You ask.

"Not really..." She says. "Since I got here it's been pretty hectic, and I suppose my spontaneous baking didn't exactly free up my time"

"It was delicious though" You say

"Oh, absolutely" she says.

"What are your plans now, anyway?" You ask. "Are you staying here?"

"Well I'm coming with you, obviously" She says.

...

Hella laughs. "Just kidding. Ooo you should have seen your face there for a second" She says. "I'm not big on battles, so I'll stay here if that's okay"

"It's fine. Everyone seems to like you" You say.

"And I'll do what I can to help out in return, just- oh" Hella says, looking down to see Liz tugging at her shirt. "Ready to keep playing?"

Liz turns to the cups and points.

"Okay, just give me one second, Yuu" She says.

"Go ahead, this looks very important" You say.

Hella smiles and does her thing, revealing the pebble's position then switching the cups around.

This time Liz gets it right, rattling her tail excitedly when the pebble is revealed. She then grabs it and slithers over to Lola, handing the pebble to her. Then as Liz is slithering back, Lola tosses the pebble to Hella, who puts it back under the cup. Liz doesn't even notice.

Hella turns to you and puts a finger to her lips, and you chuckle.

"You know she'll find out eventually" You say.

Hella shrugs. "Easier than collecting hundreds of these things..." She says.

Liz slithers back up into Hella's lap, where she recieves a hug and a kiss.

"Well you know what they say 'the only girl who enjoys snuggling more than a bunny is a snake'... and this one is so snuggly" Hella says, hugging the Serpid again for emphasis.

In response, Liz wraps her tail around Hella's stomach again.

"Plus it helps that she hasn't left me since I gave her that cookie" She says.

"They do say that the surest way to a man's heart is through his stomach... I guess that goes for kids too" You say.

"Who says that?" Hella asks.

"I dunno... they do, I guess" You say.

"I don't think I'e heard that saying before..." She says.

"Oh... well it basically means that if you want to get a guy to fall in love with you, feed him good food" You say.

Hella giggles. "If that were true, you'd be all over me" She says.

"To be fair, I don't actually have a heart" You say, knocking on your chest. "Hard to go through my stomach to something that isn't there"

"I'll have to try a different approach then" She says, before her eyes go wide. "I-I mean... if that was like... what I wanted. Y'know?"

You raise an eyebrow, then turn your attention to Liz, who is currently examining the cups again.

"Oh! You wanna play again sweetie?" Hella asks. "Okay, ready?"

As Hella and Liz start to play their game again, you spot Pip and Lyvia entering the dining room. Lyvia goes off to join Robin and the Devils, while Pip goes over and sits next to you.

"Hey hey, Lala, Yuyu" Pip says. "What's shakin'?"

In response you hear Liz's tail give an excited rattle as Hella moves the cups around.

"Aside from the noodle's tail" Pip says.

"A few things..." You say. "How's the tutoring going?"

"Well enough. The Queen is an eager but slow learner" Pip says. "We'll get there at some point... whether or not that point comes before or after the war is over..."

"At least you're getting somewhere" You say.

"I'd drink to that... if I had a drink" She says. "Maybe later. You get the Commander's note?"

You nod. "Marching at dawn" You say. "You set to go?"

"Probably" She says as she leans back. "You?"

"Same" You reply.

"Glad we're both so confident" She says. "So what've you been up to while I've been teaching?"

"I went out and helped Gretchen piece together the Legion's siege engine" You say.

"How'd that go?" She asks.

"Pretty well. We managed to figure out how it works, I learned some saucy new curses, Gretchen's got some new building materials" You say.

"They're scrappin' it?" She asks. "I thought you figured it out"

"It only works when there's a boon inside it. Without the boon it's just a pointless coil made from useful materials" You say. "I'll spare you the reasoning for it, since it's all theoretical mumbo jumbo that only Fran and I seem to get. But that's the gist of it"

"Shame. It seemed like a pretty effective weapon" She says.

"Gretchen seems confident that she can make a better one" You say. "If her euphemisms were anything to judge by, she'll be making a weapon that will not so much lay siege to a city as it will violate it"

"That sounds like Gretchen," Pip says, "never saying anything that can't be made into some kind of double entendre... good on you for helping out though. I sometimes forget that you studied with the smart guys"

"Should I be insulted?" You ask.

"Not in a bad way" She says. "You usually don't find scholarly types fighting... anywhere really"

"Probably for the best. A lifetime of books doesn't make someone a capable fighter" You say. "And a lifetime of fighting has its own downsides"

"Here here" Pip says.

"How long of a march is it to Riverhold anyway?" You ask.

"Little over a week... I think" She says. "Depends on our pace"

"Ugh... sounds like a lot of walking" You say.

"Yyyyep" She says. "I'm gonna see if I can't get the commander to give me a position on one of the airships, but that can wait 'till tomorrow"

"Got any plans for tonight?" You ask.

"Tonight I am going to kick back, relax, maybe drink a bit" She says. "Feel like joinin' me?"

"Sure, so long as we don't drink as muh as last time" You say.

"I keep it light when I have important things to do in the morning" She says. "How 'bout you, Lala? You wanna hang with us tonight?"

Hella's head perks up, and she turns away from Liz, who she was baby-talking to up until a second ago. "U-uhhh... I didn't quite catch that" She says.

"We're gonna hang out tonight. Wanna join us?" You ask.

"Uhh..." Hella says, looking between you and Liz.

"You can keep the child. We'll probably just end up staying here" Pip says.

"Really?" You ask.

"Why not? What's the point of having a sweet manor if you can't hang out here?" Pip asks.

"Good point" You say. "And Liz is usually pretty well behaved. So yeah, whaddya say?"

"Alright" Hella says.

"How 'bout you, Red?" Pip asks.

"I'm in" Cheska replies.

"Awesome" Pip says. "Now I've just gotta ask the other Red and maybe Lululu..."

"Not Derrick?" You ask.

"Nah, him and Belly are 100% going to be busy tonight" Pip says. "Trust me, I've tried"

"Busy with what?" Hella asks.

Hella tilts her head and looks to Pip, who makes a circle with her finger and thumb on her left hand, then puts her right index finger into the hole.

It takes Hella a second, but she gets it. "Oh... Oh!" Hella says. "Goodness... so they're... a thing?"

"Yyyyyep" Pip says.

"I see..." Hella says.

With that you turn your attention to your dinner, occasionally giving Hella a hand feeding Liz. She's a surprisingly fussy eater when she's not swallowing things whole. You also take a moment to share your meal with Coral before it's done.

Once you're finished you stand up and stretch out. Pip does the same.

"Alright. I'm gonna go find Madelaine" She says. "Anyone feel like coming along?"

You politely decline, but offer to send Coral to help. Pip accepts, and goes on her way with the little sprite

With her gone, you head up to see Belladonna. The maid is in her office, eating dinner at her desk. When she notices you at the door she apologizes and hastily tries to clean things up a bit.

"You know you could have joined us in the dining room" You say.

"I am far too busy for that..." She replies.

"Do I need to hire you an assistant?" You ask, pulling up a chair by her desk so you can sit down.

"This much is manageable, but any more and an assistant would be a welcome addition" She says.

"I'll keep it in mind" You say.

"I take it you're marching with the main force tomorrow?" She asks.

"I am" You say. "Is there anything that I need to do before then?"

Belladonna hums and shifts through some of the papers on her desk. "I need approval for some things..."

You spend some time going through some of her work. Most of it is budget based: requests for funding, public projects, etc.

"You know, when you think about being a lord it usually doesn't involve this much tedium and paperwork..." You say.

"I mostly take care of all this, as I did when Graumer was lord" She says. "I can continue to do so, if it is not quite your speed"

"I'd like to have some part of it..." You say. "My mother has a good system for this kind of stuff. I'll have to ask how she set it up. In the meantime-

"-you've earned the night off" You say, putting a hand on her shoulder. "Take some time to relax"

"I... guess I should" She says. "Most of this can wait until tomorrow"

"Exactly" You say.

"Well... except for this... and this..." She says.

"Alright, here" You say. "I'll give you a hand with those"

"Y-you will?" She asks.

"Of course" You say. "Now, what needs to be done?"

You go through the "urgent" pile with Belladonna. It's mostly bookkeeping and math, which you apparently excel at. The work is done fast, which is good because as you're finishing up you notice 2 pairs of yellow-and-black eyes peeking into the room.

"Alright... that's everything?" You ask.

"Yes, thank you" She says. "Your mathematical skills are much better than I expected"

"Much better than I expected too" You say. "Now get some rest"

"I will" She replies, bowing politely as you head out and-

It's highly likely she severely damaged Yuu's mind in the mageblade universe, she drove a spike through Stella's eye, she tried to drive one through the echidna girl, and also zombified some soldiers. Also, the resistance was damaged enough by her to really hate her and Mahron apparently trusted her enough to have her do some high level interrogations. She's probably pretty bad.

Note also that just by getting a boon she has descended to another level of evil. Cheska was about as far as you could get on the demon side to being good. I do not think Raven will ever reform and I think it's dangerous to try. Nevermind that spending time with her really hits us badly in the PR department with our friends.
>>
>>2707683
We cant blame this version of her for stuff a different version of her did in an alternate universe, and conflating the two could be opening a whole other can of worms besides.

Having a boon doesnt make you evil. And note that Cheska burned a LOT of people to death, both before and after we met her.
Im not particularly invested in defending her, Im just saying a lot of your reasons for her being "evil" are kind of inconsistent or speculative. So, just going to drop it here.
>>
-smile as you walk right past the sneaky devils, pretending that you didn't see them. That lasts for about 2 seconds, as they pounce on you when you go by.

"Hey you two" You say. "Were you waiting for me?"

"Yeah!" Daisy says.

"We were waiting forever" Lily says.

"I was only in there for like half an hour..." You say.

"Forever!" Lily says.

You chuckle and pick the two of them up. "Well now I'm done" You say. "What do you guys wanna do?"

They tell you to go back to the tea room, where everyone was hanging out earlier.

"Why is it called the tea room?" Daisy asks. 'It isn't shaped like a T at all..."

"It's where people usually come to drink tea" You say.

"But you can drink tea anywhere" Daisy says.

"But this is where the old lord would drink tea" You say. "There's so many rooms in this house that he put a purpose to all of them"

"But I saw one of the maid ladies drinkin' tea in the kitchens" Daisy says.

"They can drink tea wherever they want" You say.

"So why is it still called the tea room?" Daisy asks.

As yougo to answer, Lily holds out her hands, signaling that she'll take this one. "Ask mom" Lily says.

"Okay" Daisy replies. "Is there a juice room too?"

You laugh and give her a peck on the forehead. "Of course, Daisy"

Tired as fuck so calling it a bit early.

Next thread will be tomorrow.

Having a boon does actually make you pretty evil. The boon holders are hand picked by Mahron for their power (so they'll survive to get their boon) and their cruelty (so they'll actually use it). The circumstances in which Raven got her boon probably mark her as being worse than a normal boon holder, since she was chosen purely for her willingness to use it as power wasn't a factor.

"What?" Lily asks, looking closer. "No way!"

You've been playing with this weird 'spot the stuff' picture book. There's a really cluttered picture on each page, and you have to pick out certain things from it. But with your eyes, you spot everything immediately.

"I found the horsey!" Daisy says.

"What? Where?" Lily asks.

"Under the big thing, right?" You ask Daisy.

Daisy nods. "Yeah, next to the pile of stuff" She says.

"Have you found the key yet?" You ask.

Daisy shakes her head, and goes back to searching.

"Where are you guys seeing this horse?" Lily asks. "I can't find it anywhere"

"I haven't even found the horse!" Lily says, clearly frustrated.

"Well hurry up!" Daisy say, staring impatiently at her sister.

"What if I told you where the horse is?" You ask.

Lily shakes her head.

"No?" You ask.

"Can I draw?" She asks. "I left all my pencils and books at home..."

"Not a problem" You say. "There's bound to be art supplies in this house somewhere"

"Are they in the art room?" Daisy asks.

"I'm... not actually sure there is an art room" You say. "Give me a second, I'll be right back"

You shift them off of your lap and peek out into the room across the hall where Lola, Hella, Liz, and Fran are.

"Hey, quick question: does this house happen to have like... art stuff?" You ask. "Drawing pencils, paper, boards, that sort of thing"

"Alice has a ton. She likes to sketch out her outfits before she makes them" Lola says. "What do you need it for?"

"Lily wants to draw" You say.

"Oh, right... she forgot all her things back in Leon. Even though I asked 5 times if she had everything..." Fran says, before clearing her throat. "But that's beside the point. Could you ask Alice if Lily can use some of her things?"

"Certainly! I'll be right back" Lola says. She stands up and flattens out her dress, then heads out of the room.

"Thanks!" You call out after her. "I'll be back in the other room"

You head back to Lily and Daisy, sitting back down on the couch and putting a hand on the red devil's shoulder.

"Alright Hella... if you were Daisy, where would you go?" You ask.

"The kitchens, maybe?" Hella asks.

"She just ate..." You say.

"Alright... well... somewhere she's not supposed to be" Hella says. "You were never a kid, so you wouldn't get it. But every time I ever snuck away from my parents it was to go somewhere I wasn't allowed to"

"Well, if I remember right there's only one place I specifically told her not to go..." You say. "You keep searching up here. I'll go check if my hunch is right"

Hella goes to check the next room, while you go to the stairs and make your way down... and down... until you hit the ground floor, where you go to the locked dungeon entrance.

It's still locked, but you don't think that would be any deterrent to a shadow on the ground. So you unlock it and go down, being as quiet as you can.

Sure enough you hear voices as you get lower, one belonging to Daisy, the other to Raven.

"I thought angels were supposed to be nice" Daisy says.

"Look at the wings. Black wings mean 'not nice', kid" Raven replies.

"How did they get that way?" Daisy asks.

"She is not like Cheska" You say, as you reach the end of the stairs. "Go back upstairs and wait for me by the door"

It is clear on Daisy's face that she knows she's in trouble, and she hesitates.

"Go on" You say. "Wait for me, and if you're good then I won't tell your mother about this"

Daisy scurries off.

"Thanks for that" Raven says. "Do you have any idea how annoying children are?"

You look her over, trying to decide what to say.

"Don't give me that look. It's not like I was gonna hurt her or anything. In fact, I was trying to convince her to go the hell away" Raven says.

...

"But then I am going to have to kill someone eventually" Raven says. "Those lackies you send down because you can't stand the sight of me tell me nothing. Mind if I ask what your plan there is?"

...

"Can't say I'm a fan of the strong, silent type" Raven says. "You're gonna have to say something eventually"

>What say?
>>
>>2709225
Tell her that we will eventually come back (we got to do that to face last Yuu memories) keep being stern but don’t take shots at her

>>"You having to kill people isn't my problem, is it?"

I kind of lost track of what types of demons needed to do what to keep feeding their sins. I didn't think she was the murder type.

Can you remind us (me) what types are what again?
>>
>>2709265
There's Blood (murderers), Mind (mainly robbers, but also cons and such), and Body (mainly rapists, but also includes overindulgence).
>>
>>2709272
Thanks. I completely forgot the association with the middle one. I'm sure you told us otherwise, but I would have presumed body or mind for Raven just from how she behaves.

Makes me wonder incidentally if demons can develop multiple sins into a combined type. Or switch over if they grow more corrupt in another way.
>>
"Is that my problem?" You ask.

"Only if you'd like to keep me alive" She says. "A gal like me goes too long without spilling some blood, and her wrists start to look...crowded"

"I'm aware" You say.

"So you plan on leaving me down here to die by my own hand" She says, badly hiding her fear. You can't quite tell if it's a calculated show or a genuine emotion. "An execution would be cleaner..."

"So you want to die?" You ask.

"I'd rather not, personally. But given the choice between having my neck snipped or losing my mind and biting my tongue off, I'd much prefer the former" She says. "At least there's some dignity in the headsman's swing... if you've got a good headsman"

You sigh and step up to the bars. "We're not taking your head off. Not until we've emptied it, at least" You say.

"So bloody well interrogate me and get it over with!" She says. "I can't say no to you. You know that. Ask your god damn questions and get it over with"

>Do that now

Once you're a demon, you're locked in. If you become a demon of body by raping then later discover you enjoy killing just as much you remain a demon of body, only bound to your original sin and free to commit your new one at your leisure.

Raven has always had red eyes. Murder is her sin but she likes to use her body to get what she wants, which makes her easy to confuse with a demon of body.

I know I'm late but I'm having to think. Since we're coming back I want to give her the option to answer questions via our mind control. In return we ensure she gets humane treatment.

1) What would you have done if you could have hit me with your boon?
2) What crimes would you commit on the citizens of this town if you could escape and there were no soldiers here?
3) What do you know that will most impact my fight against Mahron and the Black God?
>>
"Alright" You say. "Let me deal with the kid first, and then I'll return for you"

Her expression is unreadable, and she says nothing as you leave.

You head up the stairs and find Daisy still waiting at the top, fighting back tears. You go up to her and crouch down to her level.

"Daisy, why did you go down there?" You ask.

"I just wanted to see..." She says.

"I told you to stay away from there for a reason" You say. "That woman is dangerous"

"She didn't seem so bad..." Daisy says.

"She's a blood demon, Daisy" You say.

"Auntie Cheska was too" She says.

"There aren't many demons like Cheska" You say. "She killed good men coming in to the city, and she would have killed innocent people if I hadn't stopped her"

Daisy shivers, so you pull her into a hug.

"I want you to promise me you won't go down there again" You say.

"I promise" She says.

"Good" You say. "Now go and find your mother"

"Are you gonna tell her?" Daisy asks.

"No. We'll keep this between us, but only if you keep your promise" You say. "You can say you got lost looking for the bathroom. Okay?"

"Okay" She replies.

"Run along now" You say

Daisy nods and scampers off. Daisy is right on some things. The way Raven is and the way Cheska was aren't all that different.

Both of them killed without remorse, never apologizing for their crimes. You wonder now if you really saw the capacity for atonement in Cheska, or if you were just naive enough to think she was good, and lucky enough to be proven right.

As you go back down the stairs you wonder if you've just grown less trusting, or if you really don't see in Raven what you did in Cheska.

When you reach her cell, she's laying back waiting for you...

>>

I get the feeling she's going to instantly start being coy anyway, but it may be worth it as a sign of good faith at the start at least.

I don't think we really owe the good faith shot. My first two questions are really just to evaluate how evil she actually is and there's no way she will come clean on that without an order.
>>
You pull up a chair next to the cell, and knock on the bars.

"What took you so long?" She asks as she sits up.

"That didn't even take 5 minutes" You say.

"Time kinda stretches out when you're expecting to die, I guess" She says.

"Answer my questions well, and I without forcing me to wring them out of you, and I may just spare your life" You say. "I'll even promote you to a sort of... 'captive executioner' of sorts"

"But only if you like my answers" She says.

You nod. "I'll start with a hypothetical one: if our positions were switched, and you had hit me with that spike, what would you have done?" You ask.

"I already answered that" She says.

"Humour me" You reply.

"Alright. Well it depends, I suppose" She says.

"On what?" You ask.

"On how subtle I could be" She says. "A missing eye stands out quite a bit, but a little hole in the skull... say around the back is much harder to notice"

"The difference being?" You ask.

"My own desires" She says. "If I couldn't be subtle I'd just have you bandage the eye and go betray everyone by throwing open the gates and allowing the Legion to pour in. But if I could be subtle... well, having the lord of a town under my thumb is pointless if that town gets put to the sword"

You narrow your eyes and swallow. A strange pain shoots through the base of your skull.

"If I could keep you, I would" She says. "You'd keep on like you are now, but I'd always be close by..."

Something feels wrong. You're having a bit of trouble staying focused.

You take a breath and steel yourself. You are not that other you. You are in control.

"And what would you do with the town?" You ask.

She shrugs. "I'd only be its ruler through you, so I suppose you'd have to be benevolent in some way" She says. "But then the baron was never benevolent, and people still bowed to him... it would need to prosper, so that I could enjoy its fruits... though I've never enjoyed the idea of being a parasite"

"You sound... conflicted" You say.

"It's difficult to imagine what I'd do with that kind of power while sitting powerless in a cell" She says. "It is also hard to imagine what I'd do with the spike now that I no longer have it"

"How so?" You ask.

"It... changed me somehow" She says. "Subtly, in such a small way that I didn't even notice until it was taken away. I have been called many things in my life, but never cruel"

"Oh?" You ask.

"Of course, I've murdered, pillaged and all that. But when I killed it was always quick, sometimes even pleasant" She says.

"How could dying be pleasant?" You ask.

"Well men often talk about how they'd rather die in bed with a lady than out on some field" She says. "I've never gotten any complaints, at least"

"Hard to complain when you're dead" You say.

"I give them other reasons not to complain" She says.

She could well be lying. If you want to know, you can compel her to tell the truth after everything is said and done.

"How were you chosen to get the boon?" You ask.

"My skills, I suppose" She says. "I've never been much of a warrior, but then the spike wasn't a warrior's weapon. My expertise has always been in infiltration and interrogation"

"I figured the Legion would have a tougher looking interrogator" You say.

"Because you believe pain can give answers, like most men do" She says. "A man will scream whatever he thinks you want to hear when he is in pain, often times it isn't the truth"

"And how do you get the truth?" You ask.

"How do you think?" She asks, raising her arms in the air and giving her hips a little shake. "Pain will get you words, but pleasure will get you truths. If you push a person to the edge and keep them there long enough, they'll spill their deepest, darkest secrets to get that release"

"So you... fuck... the answers out of people" You say.

"Works almost every time" She says. "And if someone doesn't give their secrets for pleasure, then pain was never going to work in the first place"

You nod. "So this boon... Mahron just gave it to you?" You ask.

"As I said before: something came up, he left for a while, he came back with the spike, he summoned me to Johnston and gave it to me" She says.

"Did you ask how he got it?" You ask.

"Nope" She says. "Nor did it cross my mind. He told me to take it. He told me how to use it. Then he told me where he wanted it to be used. Since it wasn't a proper boon, it didn't come with any authority. But I wasn't about to ask where it came from"

"Do you know how many proper boons there are?" You ask.

"I don't really keep track, much like everyone else. The only ones who know how many proper boon holders there are, are the proper boon holders" She says. "You seem to be overestimating my status in the Legion. I was good at what I did, and that earned me some respect. But I wasn't powerful, which cost me quite a bit of that respect"

"So power is power in the Legion" You say.

"To hold a command position you have to hold it" She says. "That means being able to fight off anyone who wants to take it from you"

"Carthac wasn't very powerful..." You say.

"Carthac was a dreg who got shafted because we couldn't muster the strength for a proper invasion" She says. "When he failed his most basic task, we sent the Puppeteer to aid him"

"And that all ended on my blade" You say. "Out of curiosity, what was Carthac's mission specifically?"

"To stretch out your rebellion and give us time to get organized before the country could unite" she says. "Which failed miserably. The knives we sent to strike out the loose ends from his failed assault were killed, and no doubt Cheska told you we weren't ready to attack yet..."

"How do you figure that?" You ask.

"Because she isn't still in a cell, which means she gave up something worth releasing her for" She says. "Meanwhile, I have no such nuggets"

"Nothing at all?" You ask.

"Oh, I can talk about the hierarchy of the Legion all day long, try to guess at things of strategic value, maybe spill some stale information about troop movements... but at the end of the day I'm not as important as I thought I was" She says. "I already know that I'd been given false information about Mahron's whereabouts. How am I to know if other things I'd been told were true, or purposeful falsehoods in case I was captured?"

Poor, Poor Raven. Game was rigged from the start.

Mahron seems saavy enough to not hand her the thing that could mind control dozens or maybe hundreds of demons and/or important humans without the master stroke to make her powerless if she got too big of a head.
>>
"Why give you the boon if that's the case?" Yo ask.

"Perhaps it was expendable, and he'll come back with another soon" She says. "Or it just wasn't that important in the grand scheme of things"

"Could have been insurance" You say. "Spies are always at risk of being captured"

"So why give me a boon that does... this if it's destroyed?" She asks. "And if he expected me to go down fighting, he doesn't know me very well. Much easier to allow myself to be captured and then... well... you remember what I tried to do"

"And what would you have done if that succeeded?" You ask.

"You mean if it had been someone who I could say no to?" She asks. "I probably would have made good on my proposal, given you a little kiss, and then made my escape"

"And after that?" You ask.

"Find somewhere to get this-" She holds up her arm with the soul brace on it "-off. Then maybe lay low for a bit, wait for my opportunity to fly away and then I'd be in the wind"

"No killing? No going back to the Legion?" You ask.

"I can't go back to the Legion now" She says. "I failed and lost a boon in the process. They'd execute me. It would be a very slow, very public affair. I'm not flying back to that"

"How do you know this?" You ask.

"Because I've seen it done" She says. "It happened... maybe a year ago. A Centaur, one of the higher ups, lost her boon to some lady knight. They hung her by the legs in the town square in Johnston, and... you may not want to hear what they did..."

I was thinking that she was either being warped to the personality of the maker, or that the boon was altering her personality to more effectively use it.

Boons taking on traits of the fucked up demons they are birthed from is pretty bad, but boons altering the user's personality to better suit them is somehow worse. We've never kept a real boon holder alive long enough to ask, though.
>>
"Is that concern I hear?" You ask.

"For myself, yes" She says. "I've stomached quite a bit in my time with the Legion, but this... it's enough to make me lose my lunch"

"I'll take your word for it" You say.

"Perhaps you'll see her when you take Johnston. Last I heard she was still alive... if you could call it that" She says.'

You grimace. "I think I'll just change the subject now" You say. "Could you tell me more about how the boon changed you"

She mulls it over for a moment, before turning to you. "Order me to" She says.

"Why?" You ask.

"Because I'm not sure I can describe it... but maybe if you made me..." She says.

"Tell me about how the boon changed you" You say.

"I became cruel and sadistic. I've always been a killer but this... wasn't killing. I'd use people's loved ones to torment them. I'd make others do horrible things and watch them despair as my control faded." She says. Like her earlier fear, she appears to be distraught. "At the time the power was... intoxicating. But now just thinking about it makes me feel... unclean"

"Unclean?" You ask.

"I don't know a better word for it" She says. "I don't know how much of it was just me, and that's how I would be if I had that kind of power, or if I was truly different"

"Well then let me ask you this, and answer me truthfully: If you were offered the boon once more, would you take it?" You ask.

"Absolutely not" She says. "I would sooner be strung up next to that Centaur in the Johnston square"

The answer seems to surprise her, like she was certain it would be different.

"Well they do say that power corrupts, but if you wouldn't take it a second time then perhaps it did do something to you" You say.

"I... I guess so" She says, looking completely stumped. "So am I going to die now? You know I have no useful information"

She doesn't regret what she's done, which is a clear problem if we keep her around. Cheska was alright since she had problems and didn't want to hurt people, whereas Raven enjoys it and has admitted she'd do the mundane evil shit in a heartbeat. She's not a good person, she's hurt and killed many, and she doesn't regret it. The only reason I don't want to execute her outright is cuz she's had a decent sense of fair play.

>>
>>2710113
I'm not sure how this will impact other Yuu's desires. Killing her might end his obsession or maybe flare it up. Keeping her around (just because) is certain to leave it unresolved and probably make it worse. Really, it's mostly a political and moral move to not just kill her. It's a bad example to just kill legion prisoners after they "Comply" and give info, and killing prisoners in general is a tough moral call (where sparing them is usually the "More Moral" option, even if they deserve death).

I think we are right not to trust her. She knows enough though to at least give us some information, however anecdotal, even if it's how so and so fights in the demon arena or so on. We should have some of our professionals get it all out of her and organized.

And I wonder if our researchers can get anything out of her on the black god since she's still clearly influenced by the boon if we can control her. SOMETHING is left in her.

>>2710138

How about some (ethical) experiments? Namely, in the de-Demonification variety. We've got proof its definitely possible now, maybe we can use her to figure out if Cheska was just a special case, or if anyone could do it with the right circumstances and work? being able to force her to be honest would actually probably help.
And if it works we could have a lot more leeway in terms of non-lethal punishments
>>
>>2710202
I think unless they had already reformed significantly they'd just change back since they are still evil.
>>
"I'm... not sure" You say. "If I keep you around without a good explanation, people will lose faith in me. But having you executed now would leave a bad taste in my mouth... If I can I'll try to convince people that it's not a bad idea to keep you around, but I can only do that if you behave"

"I can behave" She says.

"Good" You say. "I doubt you'll be leaving this cell though, and that means I'll have to find some way to make sure you don't die..."

"I can go a couple weeks if you need some time" She says. "My record is a month, but I'd rather not go that long"

"You went that long without killing?" You ask.

"Not by choice" She says.

"Oh?" You ask.

She brushes her hand along the bed. "I was some researcher's pet project. I don't know what his end was, but the means involved chaining me up and dulling my every weapon"

"That sounds horrible" You say.

"Oh, it was absolutely torturous" She says. "But you wouldn't let me go through that, would you?"

You feel that same pain in the back of your neck, along with an urge to open the cell and throw yourself at her feet. "Of course not" You say.

You don't quite hear her reply, but she sounds happy. Her being happy makes you happy.

"Something wrong?" She asks.

"It's nothing. I'll come back later" You say.

She looks confused, but shrugs it off and lays down. "Fine by me. You're much better company than the soldiers" She says.

You head back to the stairs and go up, trying your best to shake off that odd feeling as you walk. The feeling is gone by the time you reach the top, but the pain remains. Maybe it's time you dealt with this...

Just off her and be done with it, or let the commander decide.

Just because we helped Cheska doesn't mean we have to collect every demon with tits and ass. Demons aren't just soldiers following orders and other regular excuses, they're actual fucking monsters that have done so much bad shit that saying "well I do feel bad about it, now" when they're captured and risk execution is not enough.

Yuu can't go around giving amnesty to these fucks after how he dealt with Graumer, whose crimes weren't even comparable with hers. We need to start holding trials to deal with prisoners. We also should stop being the one to hold and talk to them. Being a demon prince only gives Yuu so much leeway before things go tits up
>>
>>2710417
Eh, let them be tried afterwards whether that be when we've rescued Stella and finished that quest or the Kill Mahron campaign has ended, as long as their useful we might as well

Agreed that she should be tried, just as long as she doesn't join the party.

Cheska was the exception to the rule, not the standard.
>>
>>2710565
Yeah, but we also have absolute control over her, so i do feel like, imo, killing her is outright is a bit shady, but thats just my aversion and weird hang-ups on mind control, and hey, if she's a good enough executioner or whatever she ups doing, if not just sitting patiently in the cell, she might get off with just a Life Sentence or something, maybe a life of community service

Atleast until her sin drives her crazy, but Pest Control might work for her then, or do blood demons HAVE to kill higher sapients and not just bugs and rats?
>>
>>2710238
>She brushes her hand along the bed. "I was some researcher's pet project. I don't know what his end was, but the means involved chaining me up and dulling my every weapon"

Wait...was SHE the demon that one researcher used to try and see if forcing a demon to deny their sin for long enough would make them human again?
>>
>>2710621
One option we could pursue is ordering her not to have to kill people/repeat her sin. (We'd have to be very careful with the wording here.)

This should work, seeing as we ordered her to enjoy an unpleasant breakfast and she did. Obviously, we ask permission first, and probably experiment with asking her to do something else normally impossible first. (Like have her try floating in midair without using her wings.)
>>
>>2710217
That would be largely irrelevant, as the point would be the process and the data, not the result, and also she wouldnt have a chance to turn back unless we fuck up since shed still be a criminal.

You take a minute to visit one of the bathrooms and splash some water on your face, taking a minute to think on your visit to the dungeon.

The pain and unwelcome thoughts seemed to come in waves. You'd be fine for a while, and then it would come on and you'd have to fight against your own mind. But by far the most disturbing part is how good it felt.

Raven was right about pain and pleasure. Pain is something you can handle all day long, but the warm, pleasant feeling is incredibly hard to fight off... mostly because you need to make yourself want to fight it off in the first place.

You wonder about a dozen other things as well, but you know there's only one way to get an answer.

You have to explore the other you...

It's not something you want to do without help, nor is it something you want to do near others.

On hand, you have 3 options for this: Pip, Lianna, and Raven herself.

You know that you can trust Lianna to keep whatever happens between you, but if you try to do something then she wouldn't be able to stop you.

Pip has the best chance of making sure you don't do anything stupid, depending on how 'in control' of your current faculties you will be.

And finally Raven is not a terrible option, despite how ridiculous it might sound. She seems to be at the center of all this, and with the right combination of motivations and commands she could help you solve this... or possibly make it worse.

You shut off the water device and rub your cheeks. No option seems perfect, but they're all you have for the moment.

Perhaps you should have figured all of this out before you learned how to level a building...

I think the most interesting option is Pip, but going from "Hey, let's go drinking and chill," to, "Hey, I'm gonna work though some hedonistic urges, mind making sure I don't assault someone?" doesn't feel like a fun change of plans for her the night before march.

"Sure, so long as we don't drink as muh as last time" You say.

"We're gonna hang out tonight. Wanna join us?" You ask.

The chronology of what has happened tonight is: Brought toy back, got dinner, made plans /w Pip, checked on Belladonna, got distracted by devils, got distracted by Raven, and are now trying to settle alternate personality's obsession with her.
>>
You take a breath, nod to yourself in the mirror, and head out. You figure Lianna is your best bet, so you go and find her.

She's in her room, working on something with a needle and thread. You knock on the doorframe to get her attention.

"Who is there?" She asks.

"It's Yuu" You say. "Are you busy?"

Lianna smiles and waves you in. "Please, come in" She says. "Do you need something?"

You walk in and sit down on a nearby chair. "I was wondering if you could help me..." You say. "You remember when I told you about those... other mes?"

"I recall you saying you had dealt with one" She says. "You wish for my help with the other?"

You nod, and then realize the pointlessness of the action... "Yes" You say.

"What can I do?" She asks.

"I just need you to stay with me, and possibly make sure I don't do something stupid" You say.

"I... believe I can manage this" She says.

You take another breath.

"Ahh... now I understand" She says.

"So yeah... I'm not really sure you could stop me if I really, really wanted to do something bad. But I've kinda put this off too long" You say.

Lianna's tail comes up and touches your arm, then her hand grasps yours. "I shall do my best" She says.

You take a deep breath. "Okay... are you ready?" You ask.

"Go ahead" She replies.

You keep holding onto her hand, and draw your blade. Like you did the first time you tried this you focus on it, making it harder, sharper, denser...

Like before you feel that strange mindlessness creeping in, only this time you don't fight it off. You plunge in and let it consume you, vaguely aware of dropping your blade as your hand goes limp...

You're back in Aenea's shop, the night of the siege. You've just driven off the demons, as you did that night. But Raven got away.

To track her down, you and Cheska decide to split up and search.

This version of you, whatever his path was, he never found out about the difference between a Devil using Seep, and a regular dark magic user.

Which is why he was surprised to find her fleeing on foot. She dispatched the resistance members who attacked her, even nailing a few with her boon and forcing you to get past them to keep chasing her.

He managed to wound her wing with a soul bolt, and cornered her in the alley in the hopes of capturing and interrogating her.

And then the true divergence happens. Raven takes her sword and sticks it up under her shirt. This other you thinks she's choosing death over capture and rushes in to stop her. But instead of stabbing or cutting herself, she sliced open her shirt and discarded it.

Without Cheska around to save him from that sort of thing, he was caught completely off guard as instead of trying to fight him, Raven dropped her sword and embraced him.

He let his guard down. It was only a moment, but it was enough. He came back to his senses when he felt a slight prick at the back of his neck, but then it was too late. The spike went in, then came free of the strange tentacle and remained embedded in his head.

When he tried to reach up and pull it out, his arms lost their strength. All he could do was stumble around on shaky limbs and try in vain to fight off what the boon was doing to his head.

To his credit, he fought well, and he fought hard. But he didn't win. He felt something click inside his head when Raven told him to come to her, and the fight ended.

Raven embraced him again and started talking to him. He couldn't make sense of what she said, and neither can you. But it all sounded right to him.

He was silly to fight her. Fighting is so difficult. Much easier to just let her win. Much better to just let her win. He lost to her, and that makes her superior. A person must obey their superior...

He couldn't feel his body, or think, or move. All he could do is melt in her embrace as she spoke to him.

Eventually when she was done, she released him. She held his gaze and asked him questions like 'who does he love', 'what would he do for her', etc.

Once she's satisfied with her answers, she asks for a kiss. He gives it willingly, eagerly even. But before he can do it, someone shows up.

It's Cheska. Raven looks annoyed, and that makes him angry. Cheska tries to pull him away from Raven, and when the devil realizes what's happening she pleads with her.

Raven tells the other you to restrain Cheska. He doesn't ask why, nor does he care about the reason. He locks Cheska's arms behind her head as Raven tells him to, leaving the back of her neck open.

Raven stabs Cheska, just like she did to him.

The rest is a blur. Raven sending him after the escaping demons, as well as the saboteurs. Raven taking up residence in the dungeon to keep up appearances, claiming your staff, friends, family, everyone, one by one. Raven using you and anyone she chooses as toys.

With a gasp you awaken. You're still in the chair, holding Lianna's hand. Your blade is on the floor in front of you.

You're breathing heavily, and the sexual nature of some of the things you saw have made you... a little excited.

She took you over. You betrayed everyone, and loved every second of it. It didn't even matter to you. All that mattered was her. If she was happy, you were happy.

"That was very strange" You say.

Lianna's head perks up. "You are finished already?" She asks.

"How long has it been?" You ask.

"Only a few minutes" She says. "What did you see?"

You describe it to her in as much detail as you feel comfortable using. She listens with a neutral expression throughout.

"-and that's when I woke up" You say, now having caught your breath and gotten your body under control.

"That sounds... horrible" She says.

"It was... I mean, reflecting on it now it was horrible. But to the other me it was... good" You say. "Which makes it feel even worse"

She squeezes your hand. "But this did not happen to you" She says. "You never gave in to this demon. You never betrayed your friends. You are still in control of you"

"I am" You say.

"How do you feel?" She asks.

"Better, kind of..." You say. "I'm not really sure what to do now that I know all this, but hopefully I can get a handle on things now that I've seen what happened"

"Ah... I had forgotten about that" She says, as she stands up. "I will be sure to say goodbye before you leave"

"You don't have to" You reply.

"You've done quite a lot for me. The least I can do is see you off" She says with a slgiht smile. "Figuratively speaking, of course"

You get a chuckle out of that and gently pull her into a hug, giving her a kiss on the forehead. "Thank you again" You say.

Lianna laughs, and you go on your way. For real this time.

You ask one of the maids if Pip is in the manor, and she tells you where to find her.

She's alone in one of the lounging rooms, idly shuffling a deck of cards.

"Where's everyody else?" You ask.

"Madelaine's tryin' to whip this Callon kid into shape. Apparently he's gonna be joining their crew" Pip says, straightening out the deck and putting it on the table. "Lizzy got really fussy, so Lala's tryin' to put her to bed. Lululu is busy with the Commander, and Red is sleeping"

"Cheska went to bed?" You ask.

"Flight training knocked her out. Apparently it's tough stuff" She says, lounging back and making a show of crossing her legs. "Looks like it's just Yuyu and me for the time being"

"Ohhhh yeah. I've tried talking to her exactly once. I'll spare you the details, but it did not go well" She says.

"Yikes" You say. "Well, I guess I'm fine if it's just us"

"And Madelaine said she'd drop in if she was up to it, plus Lala once she's done with the noodle" She says. "Don't worry Yuuster, you won't be alone with ol' Pippo for long"

"I can deal with ol' Pippo. She's actually pretty good company" You say.

Pip smiles and giggles. "Pour yourself a drink, Yuyu. No ale since I wasn't luggin' a keg up here, but I managed to snag a few bottles and skins of wine"

You stand up and go over to the table she points you to. "I don't think I've ever had wine before..." You say. "I remember Gerard saying they make this stuff in a place called Uliar"

"Naw man. Uliar wine is the good stuff" She says. "The bottle I think is from somewhere in west Antolia, and the skins are mystery wines from the barracks... most likely from around Dofton up by the Howling Tower"

You pour out a glass and go sit down. "You know your stuff about this" You say.

"Believe it or not, a bottle of wine could fetch a pretty penny if you knew what to grab" She says. "I learned to tell the expensive bottles from the cheap when I was young"

"So you were a wine thief?" You ask as you take a sip. It's not bad. Sweeter than ale, but not too sweet.

"I-" She says, grabbing the deck and going back to shuffling "-was a smart thief. People tend to keep gold and jewels and other valuables locked up because those are the usual targets for thieves. Sure, I could have made more money busting safes and snagging jewelry. But wine cellars were rarely locked or guarded, and sometimes the payoff was just as good"

You hold out your hand and motion for her to give you the deck. "Let's play something" You say.

"You know the rules for Squasher, yeah?" She asks.

"Sounds good to me" You say, as you give the deck a good shuffle and deal out the cards. "You know, I've never really asked about your life before Altea"

Pip picks up her hand. "Most people don't" She says. "Everybody's more comfortable just overlooking my old life of crime given my position"

"So it's not that you don't like talking about it" You say.

"Oh, no. Nothing like that" she says.

"Okay... well... tell me about it" You say.

"Where to start..." She says, playing her first card. "I used to steal from the Rynia's a lot"

"Oh yeah?" You ask, playing a counter.

"Oh yeah. They had this sewer access in their basement hidden behind a shelf. I would go in there 2-3 times a month to see what they had" She says.

"Jeez... is it still there?" You ask.

"Nah. I told them about it a little while after the Commander took me in" She says.

"I remember your hideout" You say. "That was a pretty neat spot, with the light sensor and all"

"My mom set that up when she was my age" She says, playing her card over yours. "Too few safe spots in the city, so she hired a stone-crafter under the table to help her turn the dead-end alley into the perfect mouse hole"

"What happened to the stone crafter?" You ask.

"Well she couldn't have him telling anyone about her hideout and killing him wouldn't have been her style, so she did the only sensible thing she could think of" She says.

"That being...?" You ask, putting a fourth card down.

"She married him, gave him an adorable daughter, and kept him happy until the day he died" She says. "Which uhh... wasn't as far off as she'd liked. Pops went out a little while after I was born. Mum never told me how, and I still don't actually know"

"Oh..." You say.

"Don't get down about it" She says, throwing another card over yours. "I don't. I never met the guy"

You top her card and shrug. "So other than the two of us, who knows about the hideout?" You ask.

"Not even the Commander?" You ask.

"She knows about it, but I've never taken her there" She says, putting down another card.

You take another sip, then look over at Pip with a wry grin. "So when were you planning on giving me a ring and a daughter to buy my silence?" You ask.

Pip cracks up. "Hey, sure man. I'll be a princess" She says. "I don't even care about the hideout. That is a sweet deal for me"

"Not even a little?" You ask.

She shrugs and puts another car down. "My hand" She says, sweeping the pile towards her and grabbing the deck. "The hideout meant a lot to my mom because safety was in pretty shot supply for her. Me? I have a home"

"Good point" You say, picking up your new hand as it's dealt. "What about your stuff? Where did you go to sell stolen goods?"

"There's always places that'll turn your stuff over and not ask where you got it" She says.

"What kind of places?" You ask.

"You remember that restaurant?" She asks.

"The south antolian place?" You ask, putting your first card down.

"Her son was my go to guy when I wanted to pawn things off" She says, clearly not liking your first move. "Apparently he works on a merchant airship now"

"You keep in touch?" You ask.

"With the people I got along with" She says, putting her card down. "Not too many of those, but everyone's gotta have friends"

"True" You say, grabbing both empty glasses and going over to refill them. "You know anything about this Riverhold place?"

"Thanks" She says as you hand her her glass. "It's a sort of dual castle built to guard the only worked bridge over the Guran river. Basically if you want to cross said river safely, you do it through Riverhold or you go around"

"What's stopping us from just making a bridge with magic?" You ask as you sit down and take a sip.

"I guess you don't know much about worked stone, huh?" She asks. "Basically any old earth mage can build a bridge, which is a problem because any old earth mage can just as easily un-make that bridge"

You put down another card and let her continue.

"Stone workers like my dad use some kinda special magic to make stone that can't be effected by any normal earth magic" She says. "I don't actually know how it works, but if you want something to stand it's gotta be made by a stone worker"

"So the walls and everything?" You ask.

She nods. "Stone workers" She says. "I guarantee you can find a book about it. I'm sure it's fascinating stuff if that's what you're into. But the point is that worked bridges are quite time consuming to build, so we need to take theirs"

"But we can't leave it occupied at our back" You say.

"That we cannot" She says.

"You know any other odd types of magic like stone working?" You ask.

"Worked stuff can be done with any element, really" She says. "Wood workers are just as common as stone workers"

"Neat" You say. "Are there light workers?"

"Kinda pointless" She says. "Light magic doesn't exactly stick around long enough for someone to try and mess with it"

You play another card and look to Pip, who motions for you to take the pile.

"Alright" You say.

"Yeah, that was a pretty bad hand for me" She says. "Let's go best 2 out of 3. Deal 'em"

"So what have you been up to while I was out hunting redheads?" Pip asks as she picks up her hand.

"I went down to visit the prisoner" You say.

"I thought you were playing with the devils" She says.

"I was... and then Daisy slipped off to go check out the dungeon" You say. "Then I went to Lianna so I could deal with that other problem I was having, with the other versions of me"

"How'd that go?" She asks. "So the first one was like... a messenger for the legion, yeah?"

"This one was me, kinda, right up until the siege" You say. "Raven used that boon to make him a slave"

Pip grimaces. "Sounds unpleasant" She says.

You nod. "At least it's dealt with now" You say. "I still don't know what I want to do with the prisoner though..."

Pip throws down the first card. "You have a good reason to keep her alive?" She asks.

"I have no idea" You say, frowning at Pip's opening play. "I don't think she has anything for us, and I have trouble justifying it after what I saw today, but I can't shake the feeling that she could prove useful"

"So keep her around" She says. "We've a few other prisoners from the siege, ones who are probably going to the block anyway. In the end she's kinda your prisoner, not ours"

"How so?" You ask.

"Well you captured her, and she's in your dungeon" She says. "You vastly underestimate your position, Yuyu"

"I do?" You ask.

"You exist outside the military, following the Commander's orders by choice as opposed to by obligation like a soldier. We technically occupy this town by your graces, and you'd be well within your rights to challenge our presence here" She says. "Not that you would, but you could"

"What does that have to do with Raven?" You ask.

"She might be our enemy, but she was captured by you, an independent, and is being held in your personal dungeon" She says. "Now technically we don't have to give you our prisoners for her sake, but that's beside the point"

"Which is?" You ask.

"It's your call" She says. "And your move already"

"Oh right" You say, laying down a card.

"Damn it... I was hoping you wouldn't have one of those..." She says.

You smile and finish your drink.

"Psych" She says, laying another card down. "I win"

You put your hand down. "You win"

She holds out her hand. "Here. Winners pour" She says.

"Thanks" You say.

"No problem" She replies. "Now just what the heck is takin' that rabbit so long?"

She holds a hand out. "Hold your horses, I ain't makin' any promises" She says. "But if you plan to go gallivanting across the uncharted lands, I think the Commander would feel more comfortable having someone she trusts looking out for you"

"So she'll be sending Lulu along?" You ask.

Pip throws a card at your head with surprising accuracy, and you laugh it off.

"Kidding. I'd be happy to have you on my journey" You say.

"That's better" She says with a satisfied smile. "Though I'm not sure I'd want to go into the actual ruins, from what I heard about the Tower. You can trust me to stand guard outside while you go in and do your thing"

"You don't wanna see the freaky arch-monster stuff?" You ask.

"I got the gist of it from Lala and the cat" Pip says. "Creepy libraries and fake families and dead people sound like something I can do without"

"I doubt the next ruin will have the same sort of trials" You say.

"That does not change my answer" She says.

"Ah well. Hella can keep me company next time as well" You say.

"I don't think Lala will be up for that a second time" She replies. "She puts on the brave face for you, but she really didn't like the Tower"

"She can keep you company then, if she ends up coming with us" You say.

"If I end up going with you"

"That too" You say. "It's probably way too early to be planning these things"

"Yeah. You might wanna wait a bit. At least until we hit Kirando" She says. "We'll have a better idea of how this war's gonna go by then, so we'll know how things'll look on the other side of it"

"Gotcha" You say.

"So how do you think I'm doing so far as Lord of Lutain?" You ask.

Pip shrugs. "Nobody's revolting. That's always a good sign" She says.

"More of a mediocre sign" You say.

Pip shrugs. "Mediocrity is underrated. Striving for excellence in your position usually leads to disaster" She says. "Go for being the guy that nobody really wants to oust for now, then you can take a crack at being the best lord ever once you've gotten a feel for it"

"You sound pretty knowledgeable about this. You wanna take over for me?" You ask.

She shakes her head. "I have been responsible for exactly one person my whole life, and I like it that way" She says. "I'll watch your back and all, but I ain't takin' responsibility for a whole town"

"It has its perks" You say.

"I'm not as into the whole 'house full of cute maids' thing as you are" She says. "In fact you'd be hard pressed to find another person as into that as you are"

"I like cute things" You say.

"I noticed" She says. "But yeah, keep doin' what you're doin'. Nobody seems to hate you just yet, but it'll be a while before anyone starts lovin' you"

"I can't just go door to door and convince people?" You ask.

"I think I'm good" You say. "I'd much rather spend that time sleeping"

"You're not goin' to bed yet, are you?" She asks, as she pours herself another cup.

"Not just yet" You say.

"Good because I don't wanna recork this bottle" Pip says, taking your glass and refilling it as well, then she takes a seat next to you.

You spend a while longer talking with Pip... well, she does most of the talking. The wine seems to loosen her tongue enough that she tells you about some things you don't think she'd bring up otherwise.

She talks about her mother, and how she taught her everything she knew then died from sickness when Pip was still young. She talks about some of her first missions, how they went, what she learned, and how she thinks or wishes they could've gone better.

None of it seems to bother her at all, but that could just be her usual attitude towards these things...

You don't remember much beyond that, as you doze off during a break when she goes to put the glasses away...

When you awaken again it's morning. Very early morning. The sun isn't quite out yet, but the dawn is obviously on its way.

Pip is asleep on the couch with you. She's not snuggled up or anything, it looks like she just kinda fell on top of you and passed out.

...

She does have a cute sleeping face. It almost makes up for the fact that she's drooling all over your shirt...

You shake her shoulder, but it doesn't disturb her. You poke her sides, but it still doesn't disturb her...

"Pip, come on. We have to get up" You say, trying to shake her shoulder again.

"Mmmcomin Umcomin..." She mumbles as she slowly starts to stir.

Her tail whips around a bit like it's feeling out her surroundings, and her ears move around as well. Eventually she starts to pick herself up, though oddly she starts from her butt and drags her face down your torso as her rear comes up into the air.

She reaches forward and stretches her back out in the same way that Ilica used to, then she finally opens her eyes.

"I thought that didn't feel like a bed" She says.

"Good morning" You say.

"Good morning" She replies. "This isn't awkward at all"

"Could be worse" You say. "At least we're both wearing pants"

Pip sits up and looks down. "Well that is good news" She says. "Do you know how this happened?'

"I recall falling asleep here..." You say.

Pip's eyes light up, and she snaps her fingers. "And then I tried to lift you up" She says. "Guess I passed out too..."

"I should go change my shirt" You say, pulling at the stain.

"Yeah, sorry. I'm a drooler..." She says. "So we're keepin' this between us, right?"

"It's not like anything bad happened" You say.

"Yeahhhh, but it would still look bad on me" She says.

You shrug. "That's a good enough reason for me" You say.

"Cool. Now go get changed. I'll clean things up here and meet you for breakfast" She says.

You nod and hop to your feet. Your head doesn't hurt, so you can get right into the day without worrying about a hangover.

"See you in the dining room" You say.

"I'll make sure there's some coffee for you" She says.

You turn to leave, but stop at the door as she calls out after you again.

"And... thanks" She says. "You know... for hanging out"

"Believe it or not, you're actually excellent company" You say.

"Well then" She says with a smile. "I know who to call next time I snag some wine"

"I will be happy to drink it with you" You say, as you head out.

You find your light leather armor and a note on your bed when you reach your room. The armor is obviously for the march, and the note says that your things have been packed into a bag that's waiting for you at the entrance.

"Man I love having maids..." You say, before slipping out of yesterday's clothes and into your gear.

Once you're dressed you go back into the hall and ask a passing maid about breakfast. She tells you it should be almost ready, but you still hav some time.

You go and look for Robin. She seemed pretty down that you'd be going so you want to spend some time with her even if it's just a few minutes.

You find her helping Lola make someone's bed... actually you think that's just her bed.

"Good morning" You call out from the door.

"Good morning sir!" Lola says. "You look ready to go"

"Just about. I think I have time for breakfast and that's about it..." You say.

"Good luck out there. We'll miss having you here" Lola says, before looking down to Robin. "Isn't that right?"

Robins nods shyly.

You crouch down to her level and hold your arms open. "Come here, kiddo" You say.

The little maid runs in and you hug her tightly.

"There we go. I'll be back before long, and the first thing I wanna see when I walk in the door is you with a big smile. Can you do that for me?" You ask.

She nods again.

"His name is Fred" Robin says.

You smile. "Take care of Fred" You say, giving her head a rub as you stand back up.

Lola also steps in and gives you a hug, which surprises you a little. You know bunnies love hugs, but she's usually a bit more professional around you.

"Take care of yourself out there, sir" She says. "We'll be there to see you off at the entrance, but this is kind of unprofessional so I'd rather do it here"

Now it makes sense... kind of.

Lola gives you a peck on the cheek when she releases you, smiling as she goes back to helping Robin out.

You leave them to their work. By now breakfast is probably being served, but this'll likely be your last chance to speak with anyone in the manor alone before you leave...

"I guess I'm just a little worried..." You say.

"You made your wishes for the city clear. As your servant, I will do my utmost to see them through in your absence" She says.

"Thank you" You say. "And be sure to take a break every now and then"

She bows to you. "I will. Falling asleep at my desk hurts my back, and getting ink stains on my face annoys me..." She says.

You smile and shake her hand, then head out and look for Lianna. The priestess looks surprised by your visit, but her pleasant smile returns quickly.

"I said I'd come to see you off. You didn't need to visit me personally" She says.

"I figured you've earned some of my time" You say. "Will you be alright?"

"I will be fine" She says. "The new church will be completed soon, and while it's a shame that you will miss my first mass, it will be good to go home"

"I'll have to catch the first one when I return" You say. "Think you could include a bit about me in there?"

"Tsk, tsk. Trying to use my church to spread propaganda?" She asks.

"Not propaganda. Just tack it on a 'hey by the way that Yuu Gallant's a pretty cool guy' at the end of the mass" You say.

Lianna giggles. "I'd rather stay away from politics in my church... but if anyone asks me about you, I will tell them what my experience has been like" She says.

"Sans the crazy 'me from another timeline' business, preferably" You say.

"All of that was spoken within confidence. Should someone hear of it, it will not be from me" She says.

"But you still have to change, so I'll let you do that" You say.

"Be cautious, I know" You say. "Thank you again for all your help"

"I was glad to give it, and glad to receive it" She says. "I will be looking forward to your return"

You pull the priestess into a hug, then tell her you'll see her at the entrance as you head out.

Pip's waiting for you, along with several other people when you reach the dining room. As soon as you're through the door you lean down and scoop up the Devils as they run at you.

They sit with you as you eat and tell you all about how much they'll miss you, until Fran comes along and tells them to give you some space.

You don't see Cheska, but that might be for the best. You're not really sure what to say to her after everything you saw through the other you. Even though she would never know it, hell you didn't even know it, her being there saved you and countless others on the night of the siege.

Do you tell her that? What would that accomplish?

On that matter, what do you do with Raven now? Can you reasonably hold her responsible for the things an alternate version of her did, or should this version get a chance to prove her usefulness?

Once everyone is gone, you call Coral out from your shirt and get her to show you where Cheska is. She's nowhere near the others, as Coral points almost straight up.

So up you go, right up to the roof where you find Cheska looking out to the south.

"Not coming to the entrance?" You ask.

She startles when you call out, but relaxes quickly and looks back. "Hey... yeah, I was gonna head down in a bit..." She says.

"Well... I'm leaving now" You say.

...

"Cheska?" You ask.

"I wish I was going with you..." She says. "I'm loving being a human again, but the change came at kind of a bad time"

You walk up to the railing next to her, putting a hand on her back. "If you decide to fight again, I'll be glad to have you beside me... or above me" You say. "For now I'll be fine with Pip looking out for me"

She turns and hugs you, burying her face in your chest. "I'll miss you" She says.

"I'll miss you too..." You say.

"I'll write to you if I get the time" She says. "Between flight lessons, magic training and Fran making m study I won't be getting much free time"

"Just don't cover it in kisses this time" You say.

She pulls back with a smile. "No can do. Have you seen the makeup you can get around here? I'm gonna put all different colors, shapes, and sizes of smooches on any letter I send" She says.

"I suppose I can just live with it, if you're that determined..." You say.

"Starting with this one" She says, popping up on her toes to kiss you on the cheek. She holds her lips there for a moment, before pulling away and twirling out of your embrace with a smile.

There's a part of you that wishes you could stay up here with her and have an in depth discussion about the different smooches she mentioned. But you have places to be, and she knows that.

"Go on before you get scolded for being late" She says.

"Yeah... I'll see you later" You say.

After saying goodbye to Cheska, you head down to the entrance and say goodbye to everyone else as well.

Fran, Lily, Daisy, Hella, Lianna, Quria, Robin, and most of the other maids are there to see you off... so pretty much everyone who isn't coming with you.

You hug the people who you're familiar enough with for it, and shake hands with the rest. Before heading off, you make sure to take a minute to talk with Quria about getting into contact with you if she hears anything.

Then it's off to the south gate. Meyu takes your bag and goes his own way, as his crew will be riding Betsy in the cart train around the middle of the column.

That leaves you with Pip. You figured she'd want to ride with you at the head of the column, so you're not surprised when she hops onto your back as you stand the Rook up.

"You've got all your gear I see" You say.

"How can you tell?" She asks.

"You weigh more with all your stuff" You say. "Plus I didn't think you'd go out unarmed"

"I actually forgot all my stuff. I've just put on some weight" She says.

"Cheska told you to lay off the snacks" You say, as you get on the Rook.

You know she's joking, of course. She doesn't exactly flaunt it, and you never would have noticed if you didn't spend so much time around her on the march from Garhan, but Pip is actually very careful about her figure.

Pip slides down your back to the seat behind you. "But Lala makes such good cookies" She says.

You both laugh as you start the Rook and speed through the city to the south gate. Looks like everyone is almost set to go, just a few little organizational things and Altea will be giving the order.

Derrick is here, on Marybell's back as you expected him to be. You also see Lyvia looking like she's waiting for someone, along with Storm and Michaela both mounted on horses.

"You gonna practice up there?" Pip asks.

Lyvia nods. "I wanna master it by the time we get there" She says.

"Take your time, your highness. You're already strong, no need to burn through your reserves when we might need you" Pip says.

"What's she learning?" You ask.

"I'm learning how to measure my mana" Lyvia says. "So I'm not overcharging my spells"

"Good stuff" You say, giving her head a rub.

As you take your hand away, Lyvia hops in for a hug. "I'm gonna be the strongest!" She says.

You give her a squeeze and stroke her hair. "We'll see about that..."

Lyvia's wings give a few little flaps, then her head perks up when you hear Altea calling over.

"I know" You say. "And I am eager to get moving as well" You say. "Are we almost ready?"

"Almost. Pip, would you come with me for a moment?" Altea asks.

"Me? Oh, sure Commander" Pip says, hopping off the back of the Rook and following Altea away.

"I wonder what that's about" You say.

"Maybe she's in trouble" Lyvia says.

"I doubt that. It's probably just some info that needs passing on" You say. "Have you been enjoying your lessons with her?"

Lyvia nods. "I'm learning a lot, and she lets me curse!" She says.

"Does she now?" You ask.

Lyvia nods again, and you spot Altea and Pip coming back. So you pet her head instead of asking about it...

"Take care up there, you guys" You say.

"Same to you" Altea says. "Come up to the airship when the march stops for the night. Perhaps we can have dinner together for once"

"I'd like that" You say.

Altea smiles, then spreads her wings and takes off. Lyvia gives you an excited wave as she does the same.

"What did the Commander want?" You ask.

"Just some personal stuff. Namely the item I just slipped into your pocket you horndog you" She says, pinching your cheek.

"No need to be embarrassed. I'm just ribbin' ya" She says. "Did you really ask her for those?"

"No. I told her about something and she suggested them" You say.

"Huh... she's a cooler mom than I thought she'd be" Pip says.

"I think we have a different relationship than most kids do with their parents" You say.

"That's true" Pip says. "I can't imagine her condoning any sort of illicit nocturnal activities for Valerie when she gets to that age"

"You never know... and speaking of condoning things, have you been teaching my girl how to curse?" You ask.

"Allowing her to curse, not teaching" She says. "She knows the words. I just let her use them"

"Oh... that's a bit better I guess" You say.

"And it's not like her vocab is particularly salty. It's mostly just damn and shit, with a sprinkling of frig" She says. "The saucier words embarrass her, so she won't say those"

You hear a horn go off from somewhere nearby, and the force gets moving. As was planned, you're at the front along with a few others.

The going is slow, and where you are the trip is uneventful. Reports of skirmishes come in occasionally from the outriders, and if those get too bad you see a volley come from one of the ships above.

Pip chats with Marybell and Derrick along the way, while you stay focused on what's ahead.

You don't spot any traps for the whole way. The company takes a break at noon to eat lunch, then stops to make camp as the sun starts to go down.

"Well that was boring..." You say.

"Boring is good" Pip replies as she hops off the Rook. "Boring means fewer casualties and delays. I'm fine with a week of boring marching if it means getting to Riverhold with our full strength"

"So what now?" You ask.

"Well now we can get our tent set up, or maybe head up to the airship" Pip says. "I'm thinkin' of giving Marybell a hand with her stuff. I don't think she's quite used to rider weight on a march"

"Yeah, I'm with you there. Why don't we do that, then set up our tent, then head up" You say.

"Sounds like a plan to me" She says.

When Derrick dismounts to go and deal with something, you and Pip head over to Marybell. Pip tells her torelax and rest her legs for a bit while the two of you take care of her stuff.

Marybell seems quite relieved to say the least.

So Pip goes to fetch the centaur some water, while you go grab the tents from the supply carts. They aren't heavy, but their shape makes them a little awkward to carry.

When you get the tents to where you're going to set them up, you see Pip sitting with Marybell as she regains some of her strength.

"Is carrying a rider that much more difficult?" You ask, as you get to work.

"Short term, no. But perhaps it was a bit ambitious to jump right into this march without proper endurance training..." She says.

"Maybe you should tell Derrick that" You say as you bring up the poles. "Can't ride you into battle if you're exhausted by the time we reach Riverhold"

Marybell mulls that over while you finish setting up her tent, then you start on yours.

"So who decided we'd be sharing?" You ask Pip.

"Our tents are two per. Who else was I gonna share it with?" She asks.

You shrug, and keep working. The tent goes up in no time, and you put the bedrolls and blankets inside.

Once you're finished, you look back to see that Marybell has left.

"Gone to find Ricky, no doubt" She says.

"Think she'll forego being a mount?" You ask.

"If she has to. I think she'll see how she feels in the morning" Pip says. "I'll talk to her again then"

"You can go ahead to the ship if you want. I want to go see some people" You say.

"I'll come with" She says. "I don't actually have a chain climber, so I'm relyin' on you for that"

"Alright then" You say. "Come on"

You head off, and Pip follows as she stretches out.

"So who're we goin' to see?" She asks.

"Storm" You say. "I saw him over by the gate, but I guess he was further back"

"That's the dude from the order, right?" She asks. "He would've been back near the supply carts then... but who knows where he is now. You can help us out though, right Coral?"

You look down to see Coral poking out of your collar. She gives Pip a thumbs up, then points off up the road.

"Cool" Pip says. "So what makes you wanna go see this dude?"

"I just wanna see how he's doin'" You say. "This'll be short though. I'm pretty hungry"

When you find Storm, he's standing next to a collapsed tent. Something inside the tent is moving, and Storm looks... defeated.

When you get closer, you hear Michaela inside the tent squealing about a spider...

"What's the problem?" You ask Storm.

"Well we had the tent set up..." Storm says. "Then Michaela saw a spider land on her arm"

Pip nods, then steps over to the tent. "You can stop now, the spider's gone" She says.

"I-it is?" Michaela asks.

The struggling stops, and Storm starts looking for the door to get her out.

"That works on Rhea. I figured it'd work... here..." Pip says.

You turn to what she's looking at and see Michaela exiting the tent with a spider right on her forehead.

Storm clearly doesn't know what to say, and nobody wants to make a move. That is, until an idea comes to you...

"Hang on, Michaela. You've got some dirt there..." You say, reaching forward to flick the spider off her.

"Th-thanks" Michaela says. "Sorry about the tent, Storm..."

"Nothing's broken. We'll just set it up again and check for spiders this time" He says.

The two of them start trying to put the tent back up, and Pip nudges you with her elbow. "That was pretty smooth" She says.

"Smooth is my middle name" You say. "Right next to Danger. Call me Yuu Danger Smooth Gallant"

"How about no?" Pip says.

"That works too" You say.

"How was your ride?" You ask.

"Steady" Storm says. "It's kind of incredible how much preparation and planning went into this march alone, to the point where those of us in the main force don't even have to think about the enemy"

"Pip said it best. The march will be boring, but boring means we all get to Riverhold ready to fight" You say.

"Well I'll try not to fall asleep on my horse..." Storm says.

"I wouldn't worry. The horses of our order are quite intelligent. They can keep going even if you aren't guiding them" Michaela says.

"How come all these places are so far apart, anyway?" You ask. "Didn't the Antolians have to travel this way as well?"

"Not the average citizen. The bulk of the Antolians population is actually coastal. Here on the Lubrian border it's mostly forts and soldiers" Pip says.

"Seems like a waste of perfectly good farmland..." You say.

"I'm sure it was used at some point. I guarantee the people on those ships can see some smaller, less fortified towns that have been abandoned" Pip says. "It's just that we don't care about those places so we're skipping them"

"Fair enough" You say. "Though I'd probably like it a little better if I had a mount I could sleep on too..."

"You can always let me take the reins... err... handles" Pip says.

"I'm spotting, remember?" You ask.

"Doesn't mean I can't drive" Pip says.

You put a hand between her ears and rub her hair. "Maybe another time" You say.

Pip puffs out her cheeks. "Buzzkill" She says. "Anyhoo, we should get going. You guys are all set? No more spiders?"

"I hope not..." Michaela says.

"I was going to see if Madelaine would join us for breakfast tomorrow. You in for that too?" Storm asks.

"That sounds good" You say. "See you tomorrow morning"

You and Pip head off to where the chain from Altea's ship hit the ground. There are similar chains all over the encampment, and most of the Lubrian fleet looks similar. But Altea's ship is a bit bigger, and has a dragon on its prow.

Pip hangs on tight while you attach your climber and climb. In no time you're on the ship.

One of the crewmen tells you where you can find Altea, and you spot Lyvia up at the front of the ship, looking over the edge and flapping her wings a litte...

You decide to leave Lyvia to whatever she's doing and head down to where Altea is. She's in a small room within the ship that only has a table and 4 chairs.

Altea is currently seated at this table, and she motions for you to join her.

"I trust you had a smooth ride down there" She says.

"Smooth enough. I may have to invest in some padding for the Rook's seat though" You say.

Altea laughs. "Yes well, a ride this long would test anyone's bottom, no matter how cushioned their seat may be" She says. "How is Marybell holding up?"

"She was pretty much done by the time we stopped" Pip says. "I think she might try to talk Derrick into riding alongside her for now, if there's mounts to spare"

"We've a few extra" Altea says. "I did warn her..."

"And you knew she wouldn't listen, which is why we have extra mounts" Pip says.

"What happened in those skirmishes?" You ask.

"They lack a sufficient mounted force for an assault, so they're attempting to harry our flanks" She says. "Which we expected, and that's why we left them no openings. See anything interesting down there?"

"Nothing yet, but that might change" You say.

You sit back and relax with pip and Altea, until food arrives and Lyvia with it.

"I figured you'd show up once there was food involved" Altea says.

"I'm hungry" Lyvia says.

"Hi Hungry, I'm Yuu" You say, poking Lyvia in the side as she passes you to sit down.

Lyvia giggles and hops over to her chair as a crewman brings in your food. It's nothing extravagant, looking about as good as you can get with regular rations. But it all looks good, so once you've got the go ahead you dig in.

"So what happens when we reach Riverhold?" You ask.

"Well, we set up our lines and break through the gate" Altea replies. "Of course, that's just step one of three. Step two is fighting across the bridge, and step three is taking the castle on the other side"

"Sounds like a fun day..." You say.

"We'll be lucky if it only takes a day" She says. "But fortunately each of those steps can be completed in turn, as the castles are fortified against the bridge. So once we've taken the north castle, we can give ourselves a breather"

"That gives them a breather too" You say.

"That is true, but it will all depend on how long it takes for us to storm the first castle" She says. "Demons have a natural advantage over us during the night, due to their eyesight. If we won't have the sun, I won't commit our troops to the bridge"

"I sometimes forget that most people can't see in the dark like me" You say.

"I've got pretty good night vision too" Pip says.

"You do?" You ask.

"Yeah. These big, beady eyes aren't just for show" Pip says.

"That's excellent, perhaps the two of you can take the bridge then" Altea says.

"As confident as I am, I feel like we'd need at least one other person" You say.

"I'm joking, of course" Altea says. "Though I've noticed the two of you getting rather friendly of late..."

"What makes you say that?" You ask.

"Well first off you've been together on the Rook all day, and I'm told you disappeared last night with quite a bit of wine..." Altea says. "And you're sharing a tent for this journey"

"Well that's-" Pip starts, before you interrupt her as the moment presents itself with Altea starting to drink something.

"Alright, you got us. We're actually going to get married" You say. "I proposed last night"

Altea starts coughing out her beverage. "You what?" She asks.

"He's kidding" Pip says. "Right?"

"Yup. You should've seen the look on yor face there though..." You say.

Altea slumps back, defeated. "Perhaps you do spend too much time together..." She says. "She's starting to rub off on you"

"Well I'd hope so, after all the rubbing- ow!" You say, as Pip pinches your side.

"Again, joking" Pip says.

"Perhaps I need to bring in some actual good influences for you..." Altea says. "The people you've got now are likely to give me a heart attack"

"I've got plenty of good influences" You say. "They're just... all back in Lutain"

Altea raises her glass. "Well then, here's to a swift end to this war" She says.

"I'll drink to that" You say.

Im curious, Are there gator people in this world as well? What are they like?
>>
>>2726430
My guess is that they are surprisingly chill.

They like to sunbath and compose poetry in very rigid prose related to the relative level of dampness of a particular season

They also enjoy flower arranging in between bouts of tearing eachother's limbs off and regrowing their own lost limbs.

Oh, and cajun food. Lots of cajun food.
>>
Dinner with Altea continued until Lyvia dozed off and it was decided that everyone should go to bed.

Sharing a tent with Pip is an alright experience. She's a quiet sleeper, though she occasionally murmurs in her sleep...

From there, marching has gone smoothly. As Altea expected you run into the occasional trap, but with your eyes and Pip's skills you keep the column moving along.

Marybell decides to carry Derrick for another day, but after that he's taken to riding another horse along side her. The centaur seems none too happy about this, though she does look like she's enjoying having him beside her as opposed to on top of/behind her.

You eat breakfast with Madelaine and Storm every day, and dinner with Altea and Lyvia every night. It's a pleasant enough routine, but eventually you reach Riverhold.

It's getting close to sundown when you come up to the castle, so the army makes camp and fortifies their position.

You don't sleep too well that night. Partly because you're nervous, and partly because Pip keeps mumbling things about you really knowing how to butter a biscuit...

The next morning you eat breakfast with Madelaine. Storm isn't here, but Madelaine brings Callon, Zaine's nephew.

Callon is tall-ish, with dark skin and hair like Zaine's, but that's where the similarities end. He's lanky, timid, and honestly if he wasn't wearing the soldier's uniform you'd never think he belonged here.

"So... I wanted to ask you something" Callon says, after being quiet throughout the meal.

"Shoot" You reply.

"You're a great fighter, right? I was just wondering... how do you do it?" He asks.

>>

Hundreds, though most fall into categories. Gator girls are just a branch of reptilians, for instance. The differences only surface when you look into their habits and features, such as the gators being more comfortable in water than your average reptilian, and having sharper teeth than normal, etc.

"Well I stab the dudes..." You say. "Then I try not to get stabbed back, unless getting stabbed back would give me an advantage"

...

"You probably don't want to fight my way. Lots of pain and bleeding involved" You say.

Callon's face looks a little white.

"You feelin' alright there, bud?" Pip asks.

"Fine... I'm fine" He replies.

"You should go find your uncle" Madelaine says. "Let him know where we are"

"Yeah. Good idea" Callon says, nervously nodding to you before heading off.

You watch him go, waiting until he's out of earsot to speak. "He's gonna get killed" You say.

"I've been trying to convince him to take up like... a logistical role as a cart driver or something" She says. "He got kinda caught up in the whole 'warrior' idea, and it's carried him all the way here. But I think now that an actual battle is about to happen..."

"Think you can look out for him?" You ask Madelaine.

"That is Zaine's job, though I'll help where I can" She replies. "Leave him to us. You focus on doing what you do"

"That was the plan" You say. "I figure the easiest way to keep everyone else safe is to reduce the number of enemies"

"Solid plan" Pip says. "And I'll do my part by making sure those enemies don't reduce the number of you"

You watch as the dragonfire cannons get moved into position, 4 in total. After they've fired, there won't be a gate in the way. You'd like to be first into the breach...

The first cannon fires, sounding off with a boom that rocks the ground beneath your feet. Its projectile slams into the gate and explodes, not breaking through but still causing considerable damage.

The second cannon makes a small hole in the gate, no doubt incinerating anyone unlucky enough to be caught on the other side.

And the third cannon blows it wide open, letting the fourth stay in reserve for later.

There's a moment of tense silence as everyone waits for the order to charge. As soon as it's given you spring into action.

As you wanted, you're first into the breach. You put up a barrier to block the first few projectiles and spells launched your way. When Pip arrives she adds her screen to yours, letting you drop it and get to work.

You identify the biggest threats to the oncoming troops and set about getting rid of them. First on that list is the boon holder: a man with a heavy hammer that has a mouth on one end.

He raises his hammer to swing, but a quickly fired blade wave takes his hands off at the wrists. Then you step in and take the rest of his arms off, along with his head in one clean swipe.

You turn in time to catch Pip knifing someone who thought they'd get the jump on you. You'll thank her later. Right now there's still work.

You can see the gate out to the bridge. It's still open right now, but who knows when they might shut it.

If you made a break for it you might be able to hold it open, but you'd be cutting yourself off from all support until the troops made their way to you...

You nod to Pip, and keep fighting your way through the castle. As much as you'd like to rush the gate, you prefer having some backup.

That doesn't mean you can't make things go quickly though...

You pull the nearby soul into your hand and sweep one of the walkways overlooking the entrance with a beam. Not powerful enough to kill or annihilate them, but more than enough to knock them down.

You probably could pull enough power to wipe some of these groups out, but you lack the control to do so without blowing up half the castle along with your own forces. Until you can make this power do what you want it to, you'll have to stick to the small stuff.

Pip directs you to a more advantageous position, and you follow her.

The layout of the castle is long, with obstacles and barricades put up between the entrance and the bridge, and walkways above where archers and mages can fire from.

There's no apparent way up to the walkways from the exit, unless you're with someone who is adept at spotting ways into places. Pip scurries up the wall to the right of the entry, and you follow using springboards.

Leave it to Pip to get you right where the enemy least wants you to be...

Well with rolls like that, i guess it's a good thing we didn't go for the gate.

You get up above and go towards the walkway. This place is too cramped to use yor floating blade, so you keep it in your hand for the time being.

There are other hallways up here leading to other places in the castle, but your first priority is clearing the walkways so that the troops can move in without getting shot at. Once that's done you can clear the rest out and get to work on the gate.

The walkway you knocked all those people off with your beam is starting to fill out again, so you start there.

These things are moderately covered from the ground, but they're not covered a al from the back. As soon as you step out it feels like you're walking onto a shooting gallery.

As you slash and stab your way across, Pip does her best to keep you both shielded. But she has a bit of trouble keeping up, which strains her barrier to the point where a strong enough projectile can get through.

Which it does. An arrow breaks through the screen, hitting Pip in the ribs from the side. When you hear her squeak and hit the ground, you immediately shove away the enemies in front of you and move to cover her.

"Ow" She says.

Her breathing is shallow, and you don't think she'll last long like this without a healer... but you don't want to give up this advantage...

You clench your teeth and-

Incidentally, would it strike us as unusual that Raven's boon would be able to affect us? Most boons seem to be the mana drain variety and this is different, but still seems a little odd as I think about it.
>>
You replace Pip's barrier with your own, dragging her back to cover as you shoot spikes at anything that dares to poke its head out.

"I may have fucked that up" Pip says.

"Not your fault. I'm the one who went too deep" You say. "I'm gonna get you to a healer, okay?"

She goes to reply, but starts to cough instead. You take it as a yes, and lift her up with the arrow facing away from you.

"This might hurt" You say.

"It already hurts" She says.

You jump back down and use your springboards to keep moving forward, running over the army as it moves in towards the tents behind them.

The medical tent is made to be easy to spot from the ground, so spotting it from the air is a cinch. You hit the ground running and come to a sliding halt at the entrance.

No other casualties have come in yet, so the healers are all available to help her. Once she's in their hands, she waves you off.

"I'll come back as soon as I can" You say, turning to the healer. "Take good care of her"

The healer assures you she'll be right as rain, then ushers you out of the tent so they can get to work.

Your first instinct is to get right back to work, but without your back up...

Option number two is to go find Madelaine's group and see how they're faring, and option number three is to just head to the front and fight on with the soldiers...

You take a breath and get moving, running over the army again using your springboards to get back to the front.

By now others have had the same idea you and Pip did, so you have some company up top.

They're all fairly cautious though, trading spells with the Legionnaires from cover rather than going in and removing them. Their lack of guts is making things move pretty slowly... but then guts is what almost got Pip killed, so you might be with them on this.

You spot a familiar face up here when you notice a Legionnaire go down with an arrow in the exact center of his forehead. It's Flit, and Paula and Georg are with her.

They seem to be doing good work, with Paula covering Flit using her shield, Georg putting his axe to anyone that tries to get close, and Flit doing what she does best.

They look like they could use a Striker, and you think you know just the person for that...

You're about to go to them when you see another way... a better way.

The problem you had with Pip was that there's no cover from attacks the way you were doing it, but if you start from the back you can reverse that situation.

So you fight your way towards the back along the side. Another group pushes up with you, so you tell them to watch your back.

You don't rely on them for defense, though. That you leave to the bucklers as you hack your way down the line.

When you reach the last walkway, you release your floating blade and start letting off a barrage of spikes. As each spike either hits or misses you pull its energy back and fire it again.

The effect is pretty devastating tearing through anyone that isn't quick enough to find cover, while youre floating blade maneuvers to take out anyone who's left.

With that done, you turn your attention to the next walkway. From here it looks like a shooting gallery. A shooting gallery where the prize for hitting all the targets is a castle. Well... half a castle.

You wonder why the Antolians built this place this way. Did they not think someone could try this? What happens if someone attacked this place from the bridge?

Either way, their tactical flaw works to your benefit, and the walkways are clear in no time at all.

Troops surge in from below, making their way up the stairs on the far side to go and clear the rest of the castle...

The clearing will take time, but you can let the troops handle that. There's a system in place to call for you if they run into trouble with a boon holder, so you'll go if you're needed but otherwise you'd like to set up for the next leg.

There are windows looking down onto the bridge, and from them you can see the same sorts of barricades and obstacles they had set up inside here.

The gate is made from heavy iron bars allowing defenders to shoot through, and though these windows don't give much cover, they can be shot from as well.

Below the troops are getting to work on lifting the gate up, as the Legion dropped it and broke the chains to raise it when they retreated. It looks like the plan is to prop it open with earth magic, but to do that they have to get it up first.

So you jump down and help out. Rhea is down here putting her muscle into it, and with the help of you and about 5 other strong backs you get the gate up high enough for a soldier to go under. Then the earth mages prop it up from the sides.

"Nice work" Rhea says.

"Thanks" You say. "Ready for round two?"

Rhea looks out at the bridge. "Hold for the call to keep going. Without needing to worry about attacks from above we can blow across this bridge in no time" Rhea says. "But we'll have to wait for the cannon anyway"

Before you can reply, a sprite finds you and points toward the east side of the castle.

"Looks like I'm needed" You say, as you head back up to the second level. "Don't start without me!"

You head down below, letting the sprite guide you to whoever sent it. When you arrive you find the demon... well half the demon. They've been chopped in two from shoulder to hip, and you can't see where the bottom half went.

"Is it safe to assume this was you?" You ask.

"Wouldn't you believe it? It turns out that brute force is still a solid tactic against these guys" Meyu says.

"Getting stabbed can be a pretty rough experience" You say.

"He got nicked, not stabbed" Meyu says. "Though with the way people have been talking up these weapons, the porr kid probably thought he was gonna die anyway..."

"How are things going down here?" You ask.

"Slow. Plenty of rooms to clear, only so many people to work with" He says. "Up top?"

"Finished. I cleared the walkways and now they're moving the last dragonfire cannon into position for the next assault" You say.

"Nice work" Meyu says. "The mouse still with you?"

"No... she was... injured" You say. "My fault. I went deep when I should have taken my time, and she took an arrow in the lung for it"

"Ah... that's rough" He says. "She gonna be alright?"

"I got her to the healers as soon as I could, they seemed confident that she'd recover" You say.

"They'd know better than you" He says. "Try not to beat yourself up over it. What happened happened. Do better next time"

"I will... well I'll try at least" You say.

"That's all anyone can ask of you" He says. "Come on. I wanna check in on the pup, see if he's done licking his wounds..."

"Hang on" You say, going over to the fallen demon and grabbing his knife.

"Right. Probably smart to destroy that" Meyu says.

"Maybe..." You say, looking the knife over. The knife looks back with an eye on its hilt. "Something this small could prove useful if we want to recreate their weapon..."

With the same process you've used every time, you pump soul into the knife. It writhes and squirms and eventually petrifies and shatters.

"Good call. Better to destroy it" Meyu says.

"I might've pocketed it or something, but knowing these things it would've grown teeth and bit my leg or something..." You say.

Meyu chuckles and waves for you to follow him. "I've always been wondering... all that mana that these things sap, where does it all go?" He asks.

"Into the weapon...?" You say, not quite sure what he's asking.

"If that were true, there'd be some limit to the amount they could eat, and there'd be some left behind when it gets destroyed" He says. "I felt no surge when you destroyed that, and a knife as small as that could drain a person dry"

"So where does it go..." You say. "I... don't actually know"

He shrugs. "Maybe you should have kept it. I'm sure there's a scholar or two who might want to take a look" He says.

"There's still 2 in the vaults in Locke" You say.

"I thought they took those back" He replies.

"And then I added 2 more from the invasion force" You say. "A quiver and a tailblade, and I only kept those because I didn't learn to destroy them until I went north"

Meyu nods. "Well, something to think about at least"

You get to the room where Gerard is helping Callon. Looks like the wound is on his shoulder, up high and close to his neck. Zaine is close by, offering moral support to his injured nephew, while Madelaine is standing by the opposite door with her hand on her sword.

"Why so tense?" You ask Madelaine.

She startles a little, but breathes a sigh of relief when she sees you.

"There's just somethin' on the other side of that door" Zaine says.

"What kind of something?" You ask.

"Sounds like an animal" Madelaine says. "It keeps scratching. Could be rats..."

"Looks like a rat could just go under. The gap's big enough" You say. "You're not afraid of rats, are you?"

"No, I'm-"

Madelaine stops as you hear something scratching at the door.

"Sounds much bigger than a rat to me" Meyu says.

"Could be a giant rat" You say. "I feel like we're a little over leveled for that sort of encounter though..."

No one but Madelaine gets that one, and she hits you in the arm for it.

You shrug and head over to the door. It's locked, but the wood in the dor and the frame is old and rotting. It cracks and splinters and eventually comes free as you pull it open...

And it also comes right off the hinges. Apparently this was a 'push' door, not a 'pull' door.

You toss the broken door aside and peer into the room. It's some kind of storage space... probably. Hard to tell since there's nothing but broken crates, a few corpses, and a hole in the wall.

"Is... is there something in there?" Madelaine asks.

"Hard to say" You reply, cautiously stepping in.

There aren't many places to hide, but you check the obvious ones behind the broken wood, and in the hole.

When you look into the hole, you definitely see something looking back. Your eyes adjust quickly, letting you see its form better. It looks like an animal of some kind... possibly a monster, though you know that most monsters don't feel fear like normal animals.

That was something you learned at the Archive when you spoke to a monster expert. He was happy to share his knowledge with you, and you were happy to learn... for the first hour or so.

You stand back up and walk away. If you have time later, you'll come back and see what it is.

"What was it?" Madelaine asks.

"I dunno. Some animal" You say. "Too small to be dangerous. We'll worry about it when there are no more demons to kill"

"Well we're ready to keep going" Gerard says.

"Alright. I'll stick with you guys for now" You say. "Beats waiting for the cannon to come up"

"This way then" Meyu says. "Seems like they were trying to put together some kind of ambush force down here, but the chaos of their retreat stymied that. Don't think they figured we'd get through the gate so quickly"

"So the legionnaires down here are basically just trapped because they didn't retreat" You say. "Sucks for them"

"It'd suck for us if they'd been a little more coordinated" Meyu says. "Now come on. We're in charge of the rest of this section. Once it's clear we can head back up to take the bridge"

"Sounds like a plan" You say.

You work with the others, moving through the hallways and clearing each room along the way. The group splits into 2, with Meyu, Gerard and Zaine taking the rooms on the left, while you, Madelaine and Callon take the rooms on the right.

Callon's weapon is a short, curved blade. A small weapon that's pretty well suited to fighting indoors. He seems to hold his own well enough, and you see some potential in him if he could man up a little.

His main problems all seem to come from his lack of guts. He hesitates when he should strike, and gives ground when he should guard.

There is an advantage to having a weak link, though. Most of your foes identify him as the prime target right off the bat, and Callon's tendency to disengage leaves plenty of room for you or Madelaine to jump in for the kill.

On the other side, you have no idea how Meyu manages to swing that giant sword of his in here, but he manages to find a way to cut through just about all the demons he encounters.

The work goes quickly, and in under half an hour you've cleared your sector. Callon's sword is still clean at the end, but he served his purpose well enough.

"Alright. That's it for us" Meyu says. "Back up we go. Hopefully they haven't started without us"

You step over to Callon and nudge him with your elbow. "You did pretty good down there" You say.

"No I didn't..." He says. "I didn't even touch them"

"Not what I was talking about" You say. "You're actually a pretty good fighter, and I could see that you've got a good sense for it. Your only issue is that you keep hesitating"

"I'm sorry..." He says.

"Don't apologize. Madelaine and I both came out fine, and even figured out how to use your weakness to our advantage" You say. "But I've gotta ask: why the hesitation?"

"I don't know..." He says. "I know I could have killed some of them, but I just... couldn't. Even though they're horrible people who've done horrible things, I couldn't bring myself to do that..."

"You might be in the wrong profession" You say.

"What was it like for you?" He asks. "You know... the first time you killed a person"

"First time I deliberately killed someone would've been..." You stroke your chin as you consider it. "Carthac... I think, and it was him or me in that fight. If I hesitated I'd get skewered. If I let him go he'd come back later to try and hurt the people I care about. So I put and end to him"

"I'm not sure I could do that..." He says.

"Every fight against a legionnaire is a fight for your life. Remember that" You say. "You won't always have backup, and if it's you or them, and you won't kill..."

"I could... disarm them maybe" He says. "Or subdue them somehow"

"That might be viable, if you were a much better fighter" You say. "Disarming your opponent can be much more difficult than killing them in some cases, and Demons often have the strength to continue a fight even without their weapon. What will you do if you disarm an opponent and they come at you bare handed?"

"I... uhh..." He says.

"That's what I thought" You say. "If you plan to continue fighting, you may want to reconsider your choice of weapon"

"But this is what the mastery stone..."

"A weapon you won't use is no good" You say. "Find something non-lethal, like a staff... or maybe a binding weapon to tie your enemies up so your allies can finish them"

He looks over his sword. "You might be right" He says.

"Alternatively, there's plenty of other people in this army who don't fight. Drivers, cooks, mechanics..." You say.

"You don't win any glory as a cook" He says.

"You don't win glory by dying either" You say. "Think about it. There's plenty of ways you can help us handle the demon threat that don't involve killing. At some point you're going to either need to pick one, or learn to kill"

"He's right you know" Zaine says. "I'll keep you safe as well as I can, but I can't always guard you"

"I'll... think about it" Callon says. "Maybe check the armory carts to see if there's anything I can use..."

You reach the main 'roadway' of the castle and look around. The cannon isn't here yet, but you see Altea speaking with some of the squad captains. If they're still coordinating, then you've got a few minutes before the assault starts.

You let Meyu know where you're headed, and go back the way you came.

It's a quick walk to the room where you found the others, and as you walk in you see a furry form scurry back towards the hole.

The creature looks strange. It has a long, scaly tail with triangular spines along its length, a back that's covered in fur, no head where a normal creature would have one, and the sound of it scurrying away made it obvious that it has claws. You also think you hear something like chains rattling across the ground...

Whatever it is, it's no creature you've ever seen, and to survive in a demon filled place like this must have taken some intelligence. You follow it back to its hole.

Again you can see it peering at you and attempting to back away further than the hole will allow.

"Hey there little guy" You say, in as non-threatening of a tone as you can manage. "You can come out. I won't hurt you"

You move your hand in slowly, figuring the worst this thing can do is bite you, and judging by its look you don't think it's venomous.

To your surprise a head pops out from under the fur to snap at your hand. A human head.

"You're not a creature, you're aAAAOW!" You say, as the kid snaps again. This time it sinks its surprisingly sharp teeth into your hand and starts trying to roll over.

You fight with her for a moment, not wanting to bring your full force against a child. But she's surprisingly strong for something so small, and you end up having to drag her out of the hole to get better leverage.

As she realizes what you're trying to do, she lets go and whips around to run back to safety. You-

You put up a buckler at the entrance to the hole, large enough to block it. The girl crashes into it head first, then makes a break for the corner.

The fur isn't hers. Now that her head is through you can see that it was a cloak of some kind.

Your hand is bleeding, but not too badly. You'll get Gerard or someone else to take a look at it when you get back up top. But you don't want to go up top and leave this kid down here.

But then what do you do with her once you're up there? You can't go into a fight with a child. Maybe if you can get her to not bite you can put Callon in charge of her to keep both of them out of the fight...

That could work, but-

The girl snaps again, breaking your train of thought.

"Yes, I was getting to you" You say.

You take a breath. You really don't have time to build trust with a feral child, especially not one with such sharp teeth... but leaving her down here alone would leave a bad taste in your mouth.

She could just be really hungry though, and you've got some dried rations that was supposed to be your lunch that you could use. As last resort you see a potato sack that looks big enough to put her in.

"Alright. I'll apologize in advance for this, and I promise I'll make it up to you later" You say, as you grab the potato sack.

Before she can react you dart in and scoop her up into the bag. She struggles and lets out a cry of surprise inside, but lacks the strength to escape.

"I know this is scary, and I'm sorry" You say, holding the bag closed with one hand and trying to stroke the child as best as you can with the other. "Hopefully this helps a little bit..."

You stop stroking and pull out half of the salted meat and cheese sandwich that was going to be your lunch, putting it at the bag's opening and shutting it again.

After another few moments of struggle, she finds the sandwich and stops. The little cries stop, replaced by the sound of her devouring the poor sandwich.

Now that she's calmed down a bit, you feel a bit more comfortable carrying her back up. So you lift the bag, cradling it with one arm and holding it closed with the other.

"Jeez you're a noisy eater, though I can imagine you're pretty hungry" You say. "Can you speak?"

...

"I'll take that as a no..." You say.

"Ungry" The girl says. She has a thick accent, sounding a lot like Belladonna and Lianna.

"So you can speak" You say.

She says something you don't understand, but you recognize the language as Old Antolian.

"Ah. You can speak, just not Lubrian..." You say.

"Ungry" She says again.

"Alright..." You say, letting go of the opening and giving her the rest of your sandwich. "I suppose I'll have to find someone who knows Old Antolian then"

The girl takes the sandwich from you and chomps most of it off in one bite. Her teeth are sharp, and her arms are scaly and end in claws. She pulls the bag closed, probably drawing some measure of safety from it. You hold it closed to oblige her.

"But that can wait. For now we'll get you somewhere safe so you don't get hurt" You say.

"Safe?" She asks. "Me. Safe?"

"You are safe" You reply.

It's quiet, but you think you might hear her crying...

Thanks for the thread.

I'm actually really intrigued about the point Meyu brought up. What if the flesh weapons have some sort of mechanism that connects them to Black God and sends all the mana they sucked up to him? Maybe some tiny cross-world portal or something similiar. I'm not even sure if that's possible to do in such a small scale that it wouldn't get noticed by any normal soldier.
>>
>>2735354
If the Black God needs mana though, wouldn't there be a more efficient means? You'd think you'd want to be sucking it out of reactors or something somehow, unless there's some reason that's not feasible.
>>
>>2735358
It might be limited by its available tools and a lack of communication. It can only give the demons weapons, not tell them how to use them. So a demon does whatever they want with their boon, rather than what would be most efficient.
>>
Or maybe they are simply efficient weapons. He's just killing shit quick and easy, mana being sucked into another dimension to disappear or if it goes to him doesn't matter.

Or the black God is just a tool to siphon mana by space elves
