Water... Earth... Fire... Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them. But when the world needed him most, he died. The Fire Nation, both knowing his destined place of birth and fearing his arrival, wiped out all the Air Nomad Temples. When their reincarnations rose to oppose the Fire Nation, they were slain too.

But now there is a new Avatar, one named Kazuki in the Fire Nation, but he has a lot to learn before he even realizes what the Fire Nation is doing is wrong. But one day….I think Kazuki will save the world.

Voting period will last twenty minutes. Rolls will be out 1d100 and be the best out of three

“So Azula, would you like to stay and chat for a minute?” You ask, looking to the guards. You had a couple of minutes to spare.

Azula raises an eyebrow. “Why, we have people to greet and fuss out for their commitment to us and capabilities. Well mostly the former, some competent people are braggarts and some of the humble truly do recognize their faults.”

“Because I want to get to know you, silly. Life isn’t all politics and maneuvering you know.” You say, smiling. “We really aren’t going to have much time to ourselves when we get there.”

“Actually, it is.” Azula answers, but she smiles for a second. It’s not her normal smirk either. “But sure, if it will get you to focus, I don’t mind.”

“It isn’t going to be hard to take the South Pole, but their navy is out and striking at Fire Nation supply lines. Honestly, what’s the point? Those tactics pretty much say they’ve written off holding onto their homeland.” You ask.

“Kazi, you continue to impress. That muscle is more than a match for those on your body.” Azula purrs, hand lightly stroking your shoulder before strutting out in front of you and down the hallway. “They know, we know, that their country doesn’t actually help or hinder their ability to continue their asymmetrical warfare on us. What they don’t know, but will soon find out, is that we’ll be sending the wives and children of rebels to a Fire Nation prison, unless they turn themselves over. Maybe we’ll even leak that it’s the Boiling Rock. We’ll do it slow and loud, prompting at least some of them to come back either to fight us or actually surrender. We’ll take them alive and torture them until they tell us the location of their fleet.”

You had been following her but stop suddenly. Imprisoning and even torturing enemy soldiers made sense, but civilians? Roku and Ban’s words come back to you, their observations flowing to the front of your mind. You even feel a little bit queasy, as those thoughts rock back and forth within you.

“What’s wrong Kazi?” Azula asks, annoyed but actual concern in her voice. “We can’t be late. You were already late to one party in your honor, they’re isn’t going to be excuse for a second prolonged absence.”

Arresting civilians is a thing but executing them isn't.

The path to redeeming Azula has to start somewhere and it isn't going to get any easier. We need to start as early as possible and do it by half-measures.

I acknowledge that. In my opinion, though, having the Avatar survive and prosper is more important than redeeming Azula. Telling her about our concerns before she has her own doubts about the Fire Nation puts us into the line of fire.

It's absolutely in-character for him to be concerned, and I expect to be outvoted most of the time. If it helps, think of me as the hyper-aware, fight or flight lizard brain always looking out for our boy Kazuki's survival above anything else.

“If the soldiers come back, nothing will actually happen to the women and children, right?” You ask.

Azula looks at you a little disgusted. “If something did happen to them, the soldiers might stop coming back. Former Earth Kingdom citizens would know they have nothing to lose if they continue fighting or resisting us, if they heat of this. Honestly Kazi, you might have heard I don’t have a heart, but I DO have a brain. Come on I don’t want to be late.”
You smirk, eye brow raised as you look her over. “Kazi? Got a pet name for me already?”

“Don’t read too much into it. It’s just a waste of time saying your whole name.” Azula says, suddenly turning and walking down the hallway.

“Kazuki is that much of a mouthful?” You mockingly ask. Azula doesn’t respond, outside of a faux exacerbated sigh. She was having fun.

When you got to the reception hall, everyone comes out to greet you: generals, admirals, administrators, minsters, perfects, governors, Fire Sages, and everyone else who managed to haggle an invitation. You try bow and showing proper reference and humility to them, but they always manage to bow a lot lower than you; most even prostrate themselves on the floor in front of you. Being the Avatar changed your social economic status a bit.

All, but one man anyway; Admiral Zhao stood in the corner of the room. He was loudly voicing his disapproval of sending you to the South Pole.

“Princes Iroh and Zuko being sent to subjugate the South Pole makes a certain bit of sense to me, but the Avatar? It makes no sense to me, but then again I’m not the Fire Lord. I trust his wisedom in the matter.” Zhao says, loudly enough so the small group he was speaking too, were just a portion of who could hear.

Zuko was staring daggers at him.

You walk over to Zuko, waving. "You're looking at the Admiral like he just snatched the last good drink out from under your nose, my Prince. Is something the matter?"

“Because he’s not stealing the last good drink, he’s stealing the last drink, period.” Zuko hisses. “The last thing he wants is for me to regain my honor, because he knows if I went about it the right way my father wouldn’t listen to his insanity anymore.”

“You never did tell me exactly what happened between you two. What did Zhao do, that you spoke out against him at the war council?”

Zuko looks at you for a moment and then Zhao. He paused, but you knew he was going to say something. “The Earth Kingdom armies outnumber ours, you know that I guess. Everyone with a basic education does, it’s only do the superiority of our troops and our advanced technology that we’ve been able to roll through Earth Kingdom defenses so easily. Those advantages would have been pressed in an upcoming battle, so Zhao suggested that to create a decoy battalion to distract the Earth Kingdom forces. They would be green and have no idea what their mission would be a suicide one. Another experienced unit made up of elites would take the objective and trap the Earth Kingdom forces in the open with no supplies and in between two of our armies. But so many would die...loyal soldiers...loyal Fire Nation citizens with families...”

>A.) Well the tactics are sound, it’s a pretty good plan on paper.

>B.) Prince Zuko...those Earth Kingdom soldiers have families too. Everyone has a life they want to go back to, that’s why we got to win the war as quickly as possible. For everyone’s sake.

>C.) That’s nuts. Not just morally; Zhao has to know that word of this would get back to the rest of the army. Those would reek havock on morale. How could solilders trust their commanding officers not to send them into a suicide mission like that? The fool!

“Maybe I'm speaking out of turn, but I'm from the colonies. The Earth Kingdom's soldiers will be Fire Nation subjects when we win the war, and the longer it drags on the worse things get... for everybody. We need to win things quickly." You say, frowning. Zuko looks a little disappointed, in himself or you, you can’t tell. But you’re not done with your thoughts on the matter yet. "That said, we need to win the war the right way. If our own men can't trust us, how will our new subjects? Sending people into a suicide mission like that is insane. For what it's worth, I think you made the right call."

Zuko smiles, “You sounded like Azula there for a second, Kazuki. But, ah, sane and kind.”

You laugh. “Thanks I guess.”

“Is it true? That you two are...dating?” Zuko asks, almost hesitating.

“Kinda of, she’s my date to this whole thing at least.” You answer, thinking it over yourself.

“Do, you “like” her or is this a political thing?” Zuko asks, a little more firmly.

“Why do people keep asking that? Yeah, I don’t know her that well yet, but I like what I see. She’s hard but has a bunch of good qualities too.” You say, putting your hands on your hips. “Did Mai put you up to this? For friends and family, you’re really hard on her.”

Zuko puts his hands up in apology. “Whoa, I didn’t mean offense. I think it’s good that she has a...friend or boyfriend. She’s my sister, and I might not like her that much, but I want what’s best for her. You seem kind but smart like her, it’s nice you two are together.”

“Sorry, I just thought I was going to get another Mai lecture there for a second.” You say

“Yeah, I was going to ask what you meant by that whole ‘did Mai put you up to this’ thing. Did she say something to you?” Zuko asks, concerned.

You are about to say something, when you see Azula approach. You smile and wave, while Zuko looks like he wants nothing more than to bolt out of there.

“Kazo, Zuzo” Azula says, smirking. Her eyes are on focused entirely on Zuko. “What are you two talking about? About how warm you’re going to pack?”

“Hey why are you teasing him? You know I’m going to right?” You ask.

Azula’s smirk widens. “I know, it’s funny. You two are going to icicles hanging from your noses; while I cool down by the pool with some type of iced fruit juice in my hands.”

“That’s cold.” You say, flatly.

“Well you’ll have all the time in the world to compare it to the South Pole and see if that’s the case.” Azula says, now hooking your arm in between hers. “Come one, let’s go see my father. You’ll be seated underneath me. He won’t bow, but you have to. Only slightly, otherwise you’ll be saying your unworthy of his trust in you...implying his judgment shouldn’t be trusted.”

The two of you walk away, you notice Zuko still isn’t going with you. That rift seems a bit deeper than a mere court misstep, but what do you know, you grew up in the colonies. As you walk towards Ozai, the empty flattery starts turning into mummers of polite gossip. It had been stated before hand she was your ‘escort’ for the evening, but the two of together made it more real to them. Now they could whisper to each other how much increasingly read into a rather chaste exercise.

People part like butter being sliced by a nice when you are within a dozen or so feet before the Fire Lord. You do the slight courtesy, using your hands more than your back. When you look up, he has the same type of smirk that Azula has, but less charming. He puts his hand on your side, making it clear he wants you to face him and not bow.

“It is finally an honor Avatar to have you see the light and work with us to unite the world under our bright flame that banishes the darkness of poverty and ignorance from the world.” Ozai says.

“And it is my honor to bring harmony to the world Fire Lord Ozai.” You say.

There is a cheer and then a thunderous burst of applause. Everyone is clapping heavily, some have feigned expressions of interest, but most are genuine. Some people you see are weeping with happiness, others enthusiasm is extremely apparent with the looks on their face. A couple have a healthy dose of skepticism; one of whom is Zhao, in the back.

“Now I called you all hear today to announce something important. The end of hostilities with the North and South Pole is imminent.” Ozai says, voice booming. “The Avatar will see that by the season is out, both countries will have our flag raised above their capitals!”

By the time Fire Lord Ozai is done with his speech and you’re small talk and reassurances to the assembled peerage of the Fire Nation, you felt exhausted. You heard from your mother and father, honor, dignity, and humility where to be expected at all time when in the homeland. All you saw tonight was chest beating and bravado. Still you understood it, everyone here was going to put something on the line with the latest pushes into the Water Tribes: children, money, their own safety, or their careers. They had to want to do this.

It’s nightfall and everyone who wasn’t living there had cleared out, for the most part.

You move to Azula, who in as polite but detached as she could, was kicking people out the door. You could tell by the strained tone of her voice and the openly bitchy look on her face, that her patience was quickly running thin though.

“Princess Azula, I would be honored if you would let me escort you back to your quarters.” You say, goofy smile on your face.

She looks at you, half amused and half annoyed. “Cute, but it’s a little late in the night to act like the proper bootlicker. You’re right though, let’s go.”

Azula interlocks her arm with yours again and you both wave to the few stragglers in the hall. Azula goes of her way to single out Zuko for a very prolonged, and silent good bye; like her brother was an old friend whose name she had forgotten and had moved on from any real affection years ago. You stand there with her, unable to make eye contact with him out of, what you guess was, mutual embarrassment.

You finally leave the hall and make to her quarters. The guards stationed there are still present and they look at you with unattached, curiosity. Azula looks at you almost expectantly, mischievous smile on her face.

“Good night princess, I had...something resembling fun tonight,” you say. “Would you like to do something like this when I get back.”

“I wasn’t bored or depressed as I usually was either, honestly,” Azula says, fox like grin on her face. “Yes, I’d love for someone who isn’t a dullard to accompany me to these events. Can’t say I’d like it though...though a trip to Ember Island or another play or more drills...”

You place your hand behind her head and pull her towards you. A little to your surprise, Azula seems entirely prepared for this, leaning up and bringing her hand on the back of your neck instantly. Her lips meet yours, as quickly as yours come down. She tastes sweet, yet spicy in a way. You manage to put in some tongue, but stop after a few moments when one of the guards clears his throat.

Azula laughs and you chuckle a bit yourself. You look to the guards, and the blank looks of veiled threats have soften considered noticeably. They look almost nostalgic at the display. You look back towards Azula, her usual smirk there but relaxed into something not so above it all.

“Well, it seems the provincial Firebending noble had swooned a couple of country girl,” Azula teases. “I almost thought I might be your first.”

“No, to both. I’m not some heart breaker….I just had a girlfriend or two,” you say, knowing better to comment on her own experience.

She disappears into her room, but her eyes are on you the entire time. You mean to stand there but one of the guards coughs again.

You don’t even have to climb or shimmy down; your airbending makes it all one easy, soft jump down to the grounds. You continue to use it to shift and get across the surfaces and walls of the palace, cleanly, quickly, and eloquently. Within less than half a minute you are outside of the castle and in the heart of the capital.

You have to wander around for about an hour before putting enough pieces together from Zuko’s description of where he lived and what you saw in this very unfamiliar city to find his apartment. It was like being blind and being asked to identify a painting you’ve never seen by someone else describing it. It wasn’t like you imagined either. It was run down, the walls black or a dull white from use and constant cleaning. The floors were scratched and slashed to pieces, with a faint dull musk rising above the floorboards from stains that no longer existed.

“Hey Zu-,” you start to call, a short burst of red flame cutting you off. You turn around and see Zuko in a firebending pose, fist extended towards you. He drops it as his eyes recognize you.

“Oh, Kazuki...next time don’t come in unannounced,” Zuko says, bluntly. “Take a seat, I have some leftover soup if you want it.”

Honestly, Azula's far more dangerous.
Asuka's main issue is that she's got traits of "fragile" narcissism and most likely suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder. She's emotionally fragile with a severe fear of rejection, and thus attempts to engineer situations to get Shinji to confess to her first, so that she can pursue him from a position of power and control. If SHE was Kazuki's love interest it'd be pretty simple. The first time she uses an obscure allusion to hide an awkward attempt at flirting behind plausible deniability, smash right through it and go for her. She's damaged for sure, but still a basically decent young woman. Fucking up with Asuka is more likely to hurt HER.
Azula on the other hand has the entire Dark Triad going. Narcissism, Machiavellianism, and trait psychopathy (not to be confused with CLINICAL psychopathy). AND she could kill us with minimal social and legal repercussions. Fucking up with AZULA could be fatal because she's kind of borderline murderous, and we know how she reacts to perceived betrayals.

“Hey man, that could have hurt!” You laugh, waving your hand in front of your face in an over the top manner. “Sorry, just really buzzed for tomorrow. It’s my first time on a mission, you know.”

“That feeling never goes away,” Zuko says, almost glumly. He grabs two bowls of soup and you can only guess, warms them up with his firebending.

You grab grab the bowl and bow your head slightly in thanks. “There’s something else.Mai said something to me... About my parents, and i can't get it out of my head. I needed to talk with someone about it, and Azula didn't seem to be the best to do so.”

Zuko laughs bitterly. “No, she wouldn’t be. She’d probably get angry at you for taking it so personally, while subtly telling you just how real the threat is if you disobey. Which it is, I don’t like it and think it’s an insult to you, but my dad wants a leash on you to make sure you don’t betray the family like Roku did.”

“Great,” you say bitterly, looking at Zuko and almost regretting it. He was one of them and might take offense at that.

“Yeah, it’s unfair.” Zuko says bitterly. “It’s one of the reasons I want need my honor back. My dad listens to closely to advisers like Zhao and even Azula. It’s clouding his judgment, which frankly wasn’t that great in the first place.”

You exchange a look over your mutual declaration of ridicule of Fire Lord and laugh a bit.

“So...did you tell Mai goodbye yet?” You ask slyly.

“I don’t want to talk about it.” Zuko says darkly, a hint of embarrassment on his face. You chuckle a bit to yourself and finish your bowl of soup. You continue with some small talk with him and then say your goodbyes and sneak back to your quarters in the palace.

You fall into a deep sleep. Tomorrow you set out to the South Pole.

You wake up, and in a barely recognizable blur are on a steam powered, ironclad ship to the South Pole. You see Prince Zuko and Iroh on the deck of the ship, while one of the crew mates packs your bags.

You stroll over to Iroh, offering a friendly smile and wave, which he returns. “Hello Prince Iroh, long time, no see.”

Iroh laughs “Well, for a young man maybe a couple of months is a long time, but all the same it is good to see you Avatar.”

“You sailed to the Earth Kingdom years ago...did it look like this?” You say looking out to the side of the ship and out to the bright, light blue sea. The sky had bright, fluffy pillow like clouds hanging above the ocean like a blanket.

“Yes and no,” the old prince answers, wistfully. The way the sun hits the cloud it’s ever so different those rocks in the horizon stand far below those that peak out from the waves near the Earth Kingdoms, but those are differences you only notice when you’ve traveled the entire world and back a few times. The two seas share much similarities than differences, much like two siblings.”

“You’ve traveled the entire world before?” You ask.

Iroh smiles, “Not just our world, but the spiritual one as well. Though it’s not as unique or special as you think. All of the Air Nomads could have claimed the same, likewise even a good cabbage merchant sees a good bit of travel in his line of work. We could all use more of it though, seeing the other sides of the world and other peoples has a way of letting us see other sides of ourselves and the type of people we want to be.”

You keep starting outside the ship for a bit, when you see three dots on the horizon. Every single one bars the flag depicting a skull. A horn from the lookout on your ship goes out.

“Pirates,” Iroh says, sighing. “They don’t see an escort, they just think this is a supply ship.”

You grab your slider and ran towards the end of the ship. “Excuse me, I’m going to see what’s going on here, maybe even talk them down.”

“Wait!” Zuko commands, but your already bobbing up high into the air.

You notice you are a lot more unsteady than Ban ever was with her version of it. A part of you is petty enough to want to blame her for that, but you know it’s because you only have a firm grasp of airbending, and this extends slightly above that. You zoom around quickly, but fall and raise with the breeze and gusts of the wind, like a bumblebee. When you reach the ship leading the trio of pirate fleet, you try to wheel up, only to drop less than a foot above one of the crewman.

“Sorry about that,” You yell. “Listen I’m the...”

“It’s an airbender. The Fire Lord still has an open bounty on em’ lads.” A man in a wide red hat bellows, an iguana parrot draped on his shoulder. “We’ll randsom back the ship and him to the Fire Nation. GET EM’!!!”

“Wait, I….” You start to say, as a flash of fire jets wide and misses your glider and you.

>Focus on dodging and get back to the ironclad

>Drop down on the ship and rush towards the captain, using your martial skills you learned from Ty Lee and Airbending from Ban. He could be a good hostage.

You decide to drop down onto the ship, given your rather poor performance on the glider. You drop down onto your feet, right into a squatting position. The pirates on board immediately rush you, with their swords, axes, spears, and staffs raised into the air. You posture instantly becomes rigid and stiff, hands into a basic martial arts kata and than stance. Then you breathe deep, as was drilled into you by all your firebending tutors.

Then you go lax and become the wind. While you are rushing past and through at least a little over a dozen men, it feels like their twirls, sidesteps, and turns are just natural movements brought solely by your preference, not an urgent need to defend yourself. It’s almost like your dancing a showing off your moves, rather than letting a man with an axe accidentally hit his friend with the back of it’s handle. You scoot past a cluster of three men so fast when they turn around they either slap with other with their limb or blades when they turn to try and face you, loud cries of pain and suprise following you up a the stairs towards the pirate captain.

He goes to pull out his sword, but you are already up the staircase in a single natural bound like a frog. He lifts the curved sword over his head and begins to let out a loud roar to signal his attack, but your left hand catches him on the elbow before he could drop the thing below his nose. You twist it up with your hand behind his back, prompting him to drop it and then with your free one, thrust out, bringing the wind with it. A basic airbending move, and one enough to send the buccaneer flying towards the rail on the other side of the ship, cracking it; somewhere along the way he drops the sword. You advance towards him and pick it up, while he struggled to get to his feet.

The pirate captain manages to get to his knees, when you place the tip of the sword at middle of his throat. “Aye mates, bugger off, he got us.”

“That’s right,” You yell, turning to face the crew below you. “If you don’t want anything to happen, you’ll surrender to the Fire Nation ship ahead and tell your buddies in the other ships to do so as well.”

They look at one another, questioning gazes and shared guild on their faces. After a minute or so of this, when you’re sure they’ve given up and you’ve averted all this, they continue advancing on the two of you. You look at the captain, and he looks back at you. There is fear in his eyes, but mostly anger over the betrayal they pulled on him.

“You know good, double crossing, yellow bellied, scalawags!” The captain yells, “Don’t think I’m going to forget this, no sir, soon as we’re through with this every pirate in the Four Nations is going to know the lot of you would sell out your own mother for a...”
>>
>>2723453

A tendril of the bright, blue waters of the ocean grabs him from the back and pulls him down into the ocean. You skid away using your airbending, avoiding the one meant for you and likewise you didn’t notice. In the mob, you see a tan man, with a fur of a sealion wrapped around his waist like a belt...in a martial arts stance, getting into another motion with it….
