Last time on Worm Quest: You fought a runner for one of the gangs and I got hit by a car on the way back from a wedding.

I have a Discord, it is for answering questions and telling you guys when I'm running: https://discord.gg/uWAmQGn

You were about to dive forwards and finish this, take him down in one decisive strike, or at least that was the plan.
Unfortunately, that's not quite what happened.

He leaps first, coiling himself like a spring before wrenching a pipe off of the wall and launching himself at you weapon raised, you try to dodge but his improvised weapon impacts heavily with your raised forearm. He lands and rolls, turning to look at you with a cheeky grin on his face that swiftly dies when he sees your lack of reaction.

"Fuck me, what are you made of?"

"More than you."

Springheel spins and leaps past you again, the pipe in his hands swinging wildly as you roll under him. You catch him with your cleaver and rip a gash down his left arm. He yelps as you carve a chunk out of him and lands poorly, rolling a few times as he bounces off the ground.

"Oh Christ..."

You take a step backwards and spin your cleaver as he slowly turns and stands. He hurls the pipe at you as he turns, kicking off from the floor hard enough that it cracks from the pressure.

You catch the pipe and step to the side, taking a batter's stance.

Jack lets out a small giggle as he swings the pipe, heavy metal impacting on the gangster with a loud crack as your improvised weapon bends almost in half. He's sent flying a good three or four feet backwards by the hit and lies slumped on the floor groaning.

He twisted in the jump, so you hit him in the shoulder instead of the head. You can tell because he gets back up.

You advance towards the rising gangster and grab him by the broken shoulder, pulling him into the darkness of the alleyway. He tries to jump away but you stomp heavily on his knee and shatter it, covering his mouth so that his scream of pain is muffled.

Jack carves him to pieces, he can't really stab with a cleaver so he hacks off Springheels head instead before hurling it away. Jack keeps cutting, so you wait until he's done. It takes a while, but eventually the murder ends and you can take a second to relax.

You take stock for a bit and go over what exactly you've learned. You know that Boilerplate has a workshop somewhere around here, and you've just killed a budgie who was delivering parts to him. You look around at the industrial district as the sun sets over the bay.

Good, it'll be dark soon.

You take one last look at the corpse before donning your mask, then stalk off into the darkness of the industrial district. You creep through alleys and across rooftops as the sky slowly darkens, searching animatedly for signs of criminal activity. There is a multitude of shady goings on, you see men being beaten and killed, gambling and vice purveyed with a single minded dedication rarely seen in honest work.

Then again, you're hardly one to criticise.

Eventually however, you come across a small warehouse guarded by two Ironclad gang members, accomplished ones indeed if how heavily armoured they are means what you think it does. The warehouse itself is maybe twenty feet each way, with a high roof.

You're currently stood on a factory building across the street and past a small plaza, crouched in the shadow of one of the smokestacks. The question now is what you're planning exactly?

Fuck yeah, we got 'em now. This'll be grand.

Wait Jack, we're hurt. We should come back later.

...What! No I'm fine. I've got this.

We shouldn't do this if we're hurt, and we need a plan. Just rushing in will get us-

Come the fuck on man, I'm still strong. Let me at 'em.

You can feel Jack's anger, but attacking an Inventor's workshop is risky enough. Attacking one while injured would be tempting fate, and fate is rarely happy with a tease. You have to put your foot down here.
No Jack, we can't do this now.

He's silent for a few seconds, twirling the cleaver in his hand.

Look, we'll come up with a plan and come back eh? We ought to go about this the smart way.

Alright... fine.

You head back after making a mental note of the location, Jack trudging reluctantly back home. You arrive back at about eight in the afternoon, and change back into Barnaby. There's a few people up and about still, with Mr Holden sat outside the house and smoking.

Mr Higgs is there as well, laughing at some witticism before they notice your return. You smile and wave as you head by, before heading up to bed. There's some light conversation with Michael, you can tell he's still interested in your powers but it's Sunday tomorrow, so you'll have the day off. Maybe you can show him then.

You awaken the following morning, and get up fairly early in the morning as per usual. A small breakfast later and you're standing outside, relaxing on the sidewalk.

So what's your plan for the day?

"So how does it work?"
The two of you are stood in an old closed down factory, surrounded by dusty machinery and steel slag. It was always a favourite place of yours to hang out and talk back before you had a job, now it servers admirably to protect your conversation from unwelcome inquiry. You shook the dust off of some old tarp, which now functions as a nice seat.

"Well as far as I can tell, i actually have two different powers. Basically, I've got two different voices in my head. The first one's called Jack, and he's like a bigger angrier version of me who's really good at fighting. Then there's the other one which isn't really a person... I can talk to Jack and he has feelings, but the other one doesn't respond if I ask it questions. It tells me things about people, their secrets... stuff that they're scared of, that kind of thing. My second power lets me turn into Jack, he takes over my body and i become a voice in his head telling him what to do."

Mike looks a bit confused at first but he seems to get the picture, and smiles as he asks the question you were dreading.

"Can you show me?"

"Yeah alright, why not?"
You realise about halfway through the transformation that you've never actually looked at yourself while transforming. It was always rather painful, but you chalked that up to whatever eldritch mechanism allowed such a change. However, you guess from your brother's wide eyes, somewhat green countenance and terrified expression that it's rather unpleasant to look at.
You don't quite understand how exactly.

It's just some bones breaking and reforming, some minor flesh tearing, it really doesn't hurt that much. Then again, you work in a butchery.

Mike has his hand covering his mouth by the time you finish the shift, unable to tear his eyes away from your new form.

"Jesus... doesn't that hurt?"

"Nah, it's a piece of piss. Dad gave us worse on the daily."
Jack takes a step forwards and laughs, his harsh bark echoing through the factory.
"Nice to meet you little guy, look at you you're shaking like a leaf."

"A-And you're separate from Barnaby? Someone else?"

"Nope, i'm him all right. Just all the horrible angry bits, more Dad than Mum if you get my meaning."

Alright Jack, that's enough.
He rolls his eyes before acquiescing to your control, and you turn away as you transform, taking care to hide most of the unpleasantness this time.

That could have went better, at least he didn't mention the murders.

You keep talking to Michael, but he doesn't really have any more questions after that. You reiterate that he ought not to tell anyone, but he already knows that.

A quick (and slightly awkward) luncheon later, and you find yourself making plans for the rest of the day.

You spend the better part of the day around the house with Mike and your mother, it's good to have a rest now and then. You haven't seen each other much over the last week, and that needs to change. You spend some time playing card games with your family, you help your mother clean the house. It's relaxing and thoroughly pleasant.

Mr Anderson sends one of his sons around the different houses later on, asking if the block's residents would be interested in a street cookout. Your mother accepts, and soon there's practically the whole damn building outside enjoying the sun. Beers are shared and it's not long before someone has a pot going over one of the smaller stoves that got moved outside, you can smell fish frying and hear various children playing as the three of you exit the house.

Mike runs off to talk with the Holden twins, them being his usual group to hang around with. At least they don't get him into much mischief.

You see Mr Higgs and Mr Holden at the stove, sipping warm beer and talking about their respective military services in the past. Why not go say hello?
Mother is gossiping with Petunia and Agatha, Mr Anderson's mother and wife respectively. Mother has been taking it well but maybe you should stick close by, just in case.
Mr and Mrs Anderson are trying to corral the children from causing too much of a mess, maybe you should chip in considering your brother is one of them.

You walk over and are poured a mug of beer as you're pulled into the conversation. It turns out that both of the men served as volunteer combatants in the Boer War, with Mr Holden serving as a rifleman and Higgs as a combat medic. The two of them trade stories both sad and humourous as the three of you relax in the May sunshine, you tell a few stories of your own from the shop, mostly relating to strange or humourous encounters with customers, but the war stories dominate the conversation.

"So there I was, staring down the barrel of a dirty musket when who turns up? Fucking Galahad, that's who. 'Course that was back before Arthur snapped him up."

"Yes, he was just Paladin back then wasn't he? Before the Horned King and all that nonsense."

"Yeah reckon so, anyways. the tribesman puts down his gun and just starts hugging me, crying and babbling in his language. it were the funniest thing. Turns out Galahad had some sort of "Understanding Field" or something, made the tribesman so regretful for stabbing my mate that he just broke down."
Higgs finishes his beer as Mr Holden ends his story, grinning to himself in full confidence that he's managed the "weirdest Gifted story". The old medic thinks to himself for a second, pursing his lips as he thinks back.

"That's pretty incredible Alex, but I've got one that'll knock your socks off. You see, I was in Africa during the Zulu war as well. i was there when Arthur got his powers."
You and Mr Holden double take at that, you nearly spitting out your beer.

"No way, you were at Rorke's Drift?"

"Right in the thick of it Barnaby, four thousand Zulu tribal warriors against a hundred and fifty men. All the Gifted had legged it out of there with our cavalry, so we were stuck high and dry no gatlings or field guns. Nothing. The Zulu prince or king or whatever had a shitload of them if you'll pardon my french. Everywhere you looked some half mad negro in furs was spitting fire or summoning strange beasts. Half the reason there were so many tribesman was that one of them could split into two whenever he was hurt but not killed, he alone probably made up half their force."

"So there we were, surrounded and outgunned, our lines were breaking. When I blacked out, I reckon someone must have smacked me in the head or something, maybe a bullet clipped me I don't know. But when I woke up, one of our lads was going around and grabbing people. He'd hold onto them for a bit, then they'd start doing Things I saw one of the sergeants start firing his Henry rifle and whenever he shot it was like an artillery gun going off."
He leans forwards, voice taking a conspiratorial tone.
"People say Arthur was an officer, and he likes to go along with it too but I knew him before he changed. He was an infantryman, common as dirt."

There's a lull in the conversation as you digest what you've been told.
[Do you have any questions, or are you just going to chill.]

So, how is the tinkertech black market in this universe? Will we be able to get our hands on some nice tinker knives? I want the Blades of Mercy
>>
Did you know him before he got his powers?
"A bit, we'd talked and played cards together but not much else. He was one of those quiet ones you know? Didn't really talk much, I wouldn't have expected any of what he did. He actually asked me to join his little group, said he'd give me powers if I did. I was already thinking about retiring though."

Could you teach me anything from your army days?
"I could, but I won't teach you how to fight. There's better ways of dealing with people. See I got some money, but the gangs'll never come after me. you know why? I'm an expensive surgeon that works for cheap, that makes me too important to piss off. Use your head, not your fists. You'll make more friends that way."
He stops and thinks for a second, before letting out a small chuckle.

"If you do have to fight though, cheat like a motherfucker. The best way to win a fistfight is to have all your friends with you and the best way to win a knife fight is with a rifle, from a very long way away."

It's at that point that the gathering quiets for a moment, several surprised noises come from the group as you turn to look at the new arrival.

It's the police officer from earlier, Wallace or something.
Your building is surrounded on all sides by other residences, standing in the centre of a horseshoe shaped array of housing with one small foot entrance. The police officer is standing at the entrance, somewhat awkwardly.

He's probably here for your court case, no doubt he's here to deliver the summons.
Wait and see what happens, he might just be having a look at where all the noise is coming from.
Ah shite, maybe you can sneak away before he spots you.
Something else

You excuse yourself from the conversation and head over to the officer, putting on your best cheeky grin. He notices you and nods slightly before looking around with a neutral expression.

"It's good to see you in high spirits Mr Campbell."

"You know how it is sir, weather like this on a Sunday pretty much obligates a cookout. A beer in the sun does wonders for a man."

He nods again, the ghost of a smile appearing on his face for just a second. He looks around the courtyard, then leans in with a somewhat uncomfortable look.
Excuse me, but do you think we could talk in private? It's somewhat urgent and concerns your hearing.

You push back a sudden feeling of unease, fighting to keep the pleasant smile adorning your countenance.
"Yeah, alright."

You lead him inside and lean against a wall, the two of you standing in the hall.

"So what's going on detective?"

Firstly I'd like to officially serve your court summons, you're expected at the west street court at midday sharp next Friday.
He shuffles and purses his lips for a second.
He's trying to find a way of wording what comes next without scaring you. Or making you angry.

I know that you're Gifted, you got your powers when you fought your father, didn't you?

He seems to be waiting for some kind of response.

Stab him, stab him now.
Lie your ass off. You're not a Gifted, your mom had you tested.

You don't think he's connected you and Jack, so you decide to play it cool.
"So what? It's not a crime. I'm not joining the Protectorate, I've got a family to look after."

"I understand, there's a lot of good reasons why you wouldn't want to work for them. Can you believe that the starting pay's worse than a constable's wage? Insane. That's not why I came here.

"Then what are you here for? Should I be expecting a gang visit? Am I in danger? What?"

Detective Wallis tilts his head from side to side, a sheepish grin on his face.
"Actually... kind of, yes. But not immediately. What I'm trying to say is, being Gifted is a very risky life. Just because you want to keep your head down and provide for your family doesn't mean that others will let you. I'm Gifted too, with my own reasons not to join the Protectorate. I've been keeping it a secret for some time, but I admit to feeling somewhat of an obligation to aid you."
The two of you are silent for a moment, he's waiting for a response and you don't quite know what to say. After a moment he takes your silence for confusion, and continues.

"I know you can't be making enough money from your butchery job to pay the rent, that means you have to have went out before now already. No doubt you've already struck against the gangs and you're clearly smart or powerful enough to have lived through it. You can't get complacent however, Vigilantes and heroic types who try and go it alone die nine times out of ten. Sooner or later some bugger with a gun will get a lucky shot in, an idea you ought to be familiar with. You need a mentor, and I need someone to keep thugs off my back while I preform the riskier investigations. There'll be good pay in it, I'm no miser... What do you say?"

On the one hand you're keenly aware of the fact that you've killed over sixty people now. You certainly feel no remorse for your actions, but still there's an element of risk in associating with the police that gives you pause. Yes you need the money, but there have to be less risky methods of acquiring the necessary funding to keep your house afloat. In the end, you reckon that it all comes down to what jobs you're actually expected to perform.

"I'm interested, but not convinced. What would you have me do exactly?"

"Well it depends somewhat on what you're willing to do and what your Gifts actually are. There are things that I can't do and places I can't go as a police officer. I'd be asking you to accompany me there "in costume" as it were and have my back. Giving me someone to bounce ideas off of would be useful as well."

He looks around, double checking that no one is listening before continuing.

"I have long harboured doubts concerning my superiors in the Protectorate and the constabulary, maybe even going all the way up to the government level. You've heard of the Ripper killings have you not? Ordinarily someone like him would have the Inquirers brought in to help catch the bastard, but all petitions for their aid have been denied... I think there's something terribly wrong going on here in Brockton, and Officer Wallis cannot do what must be done. If I could bring other police with me I would, but I don't know who to trust. I think there may even be corruption within the police, there were things in the mansion where the latest killing took place that were hidden from the public."

He looks around once more as he finishes, the party outside slowly dying down in the background. You don't even need your powers to see that he's clearly deeply uncomfortable.
"I need your help Barnaby, I swore an oath to protect this city and it's people, I can't trust my compatriots in the police but I can't do it alone either.
"And I'm running out of options.

What can you really say to something like that?
"I'm in, sounds important that someone does it."
"I'm in, long as you come through with payment."
"I'm sorry, that's a bit too risky. I'd like to keep all my insides Inside thank you very much.
"Too risky, and I don't give a shit about this city, it never cared for me.

You give it some thought, nodding slowly. Turning the idea over in your mind. Eventually you make your decision.

"Sure, if whatever's happening is that important then I ought to stick my hat in the ring. Sill looking for that pay though."

"Wonderful, and I assure you that you'll be duly recompensed for services rendered. Detectives are paid well and I have a sizable savings account, you'll not go unrewarded."

A sudden loud chuckle from outside seems to spook him, and he stops for a moment before reaching into a pocket and withdrawing a chunky device with what appears to be a grey brick with a black rubber stick coming out the top. He fiddles with it for a second before handing it to you.

"I really ought to get going or people might start asking questions. take this. It works like a telephone but needs neither power nor an operator. Just press the green button and it will send a signal to my one and let us talk, no matter how far away. If it starts to shake press the green button and hold it to your ear, the shaking means I'm trying to get in touch with you. I'll leave the discussion of our abilities for now, as you have an Occasion to get back to. I'll call you on the telephone when It's time for us to meet."

You take the strange telephone and place it in one of your coat's inside pockets, it's a bit uncomfortable there but you tend to only wear it when out and about anyway.

The two of you head outside and exchange goodbyes, he reiterates again that your court date is on the Friday and leaves somewhat hurriedly.
The rest of the afternoon continues without incident, a few people ask what it was about and you tell them that you just went over some details for your case, just to be on the safe side. A few hours later you head to bed, having thoroughly enjoyed your day off and optimistic for the future.

You awaken on the monday morning, not quite bright eyed or bushy tailed as unfortunately it's raining. Really pissing it down.
You put on a coat, say your goodbyes and head into work, navigating the wet cobbled streets.

You get into work without any trouble, narrowly avoiding a small brawl between one of the smaller gangs and the Ironclads. The rest of the day goes without incident, you get most of your work done fairly easily. You spend the day filling out orders and making sausages alternately.

You get out a bit later in the day, you had to help deliver an order to some toff. (No cannibalism this time though so it was markedly more pleasant.) It's about seven O'clock by the time you're changed and ready to head out.

Honestly you were kind of expecting Detective Wallis to have called you by now, but it appears not.
You check the papers too, and Mars still hasn't gotten back to you. Probably laying low after what happened.

Jack...

Your partner appears to have noticed some sort of improvised Tinkerwrought wrist breaking device.

You've been sat in front of a row of pistols for the past five minutes, furiously debating with your inner demon over whether or not to buy the monstrosity before you. Unfortunately ever since spotting it its the only thing Jack cares about, you even tried looking at the rifles, but he'll have none of it.

It's a revolver that takes shotgun shells! Think of the possibilities little guy, use your imagination. Explosive rounds, buckshot, slugs...

It's thirty five bloody dollars just for the goddamn gun, we still have to buy shells afterwards.
He isn't even listening now, he's just gushing over the possibilities.

...Barbed wire, penny shrapnel, Incendiaries, actual slugs. God, have you ever imagined a more magnificent method of maiming?

You don't know how to make those.

You bet your arse I can, I just need the stuff for it.
You sigh, reading the price tag again and again in the hopes that somehow it could change the cost.

You tear yourself away from the display and continue looking about, delving into the darkness of the store's rear. It might just be your imagination, but this place seems much larger on the inside than it does on the outside. The shelves seem to go on forever, and you get lost several times when you turn a corner and suddenly find yourself gazing up at an entirely new array of uniforms, rifles, knives and swords that seem totally disconnected from what was just on the racks.

You swear that you can hear a chuckle from the front, and then you turn the corner once again.

In front of you is a short rifle, more like a carbine. It has a short magazine and has what looks life half of a set of binoculars strapped to the top. Other than that, you have no idea what it actually is.

What is that?

And apparently, neither does Jack.

It's bolt action like a Lebel, but a different style. Fuck me, I thought I knew everything about guns.

It's kept in a glass display case, unlike the others. The case itself has a small keyhole at the bottom, but you can't see any mechanisms for actually opening it.

If interested in buying, please inquire at the counter.

Well, it's clearly fucking labeled. head to the counter.

You look around, walking back through the unfamiliar aisles as you find your way back to the front. It takes an unnervingly long time, but you eventually slide your way between two mannequins. (Were they there before?) and push your way though to the counter. The usual clerk, a burly older man isn't there anymore, having been replaced by a taller man, wearing strange foreign garb with dark skin.

Seems legit, you can totally trust this man.

"Hello sir, I'm here to inquire about-"

"The rifle in the display case. Yes, of course or... wait no, that's someone else."
He stops and turns to the side, mumbling quietly to himself.
"Taller, but strikingly similar, maybe related?"
You open your mouth to get his attention, but he turns back to you
"You're after the revolver..? No, no it is the rifle isn't it. Isn't it, you can't possibly be after both."

...The Rifle?

"...The Rifle, at least to ask about it. I'm interested, but I'd like to know how much it costs first."

He shrugs at that, looking a bit confused.
"Didn't it say on the rack, i label all of my products very carefully."

"Yeah, it said to inquire at the desk."

"Hmmm. Well it doesn't exist yet, so that's definitely going to mean a markup. And I can't sell it to you for nothing like I usually would."

You balk at that and tell him rather firmly that he's always charged you before, he interrupts you partway through however.
"Do you know what currency we're using?"
It's strange how questions that should have obvious answers almost always seem to cause pangs of doubt and confusion.
"Should be dollars, I... I think. Not my soul.
You decided to throw that last bit in just to be careful.

"Oh, then I suppose I'll put it at uh. Thirty dollars for the rifle and half a dollar for every round used."

"You mean every round?"

"Only if you want to pay up front."

You think on it for a second before handing over fourty dollars to the shop... clerk? He reaches down behind the counter and pulls out small box, along with the rifle from earlier.

"Here you are, good as new. Four clips of five rounds each and one magazine. Take good care of it, it'll rust like anything else if you aren't careful."

"Uh, yeah. I will.

"Have a very good day sir."

He's got a friendly smile on his face as you turn with your prize, the rifle placed in a conveniently presented cloth wrap for transportation. You slowly head out the front door, wary for any tricks or traps. Something changed in there, and whatever it is sets your hackles up.

Once you step outside, your telephone begins vibrating and shaking in your pocket. It's a bit awkward juggling rifle, brick machine and the box with ammunition in but eventually you manage. You press the appropriate button and are rewarded with a very loud detective.

"HELLO! HELLO! ARE YOU ALRIGHT! I HAVE BEEN-"

"Christ man, speak a little louder eh? The folk in France can't quite hear... How do I turn this thing down?"

"My apologies, I was too close to the receiver. I have been attempting to contact you for a good half hour now. You were not answering."

"Sorry, I was doing something important. What were you looking for?"

"I have become aware recently of a potential lead for my investigation. I was wondering if you'd come along. Are you busy now?"

Well are you?
Nah, I just got to drop something off.
Sorry, i have something to do. You kind of called at a bad time.

The revolver would've been better but the rifle isn't a complete waste. It opens up a whole new world of long-range death that we would've been wasted at before. Makes us a more effective lone operator though with how expensive the bullets are, we need to pick our targets carefully.

You know he's good at standard melee weaponry, you know he's good at throwing and he certainly knows a lot about guns, even ones you've never seen before. The problem here is that Barnaby knows almost nothing about guns, so he can't really tell how much Jack knows. Y'know?
>>
>>2733150
We've had a bunch of witnesses who believe us to be an 8 ft. tall monstrosity of a man so there's that discrepancy to work out. Besides, innate skill with weapons is actually part of Jack's skillset, right? Not ours. No offensive capabilities otherwise with our detection ability.

You start to walk home as Colin describes the situation, you can hear papers moving and drawers being opened and shut in the background so you assume he's checking files or papers of some kind as he speaks.
"There's evidence of tampering with police records, funding that goes nowhere. or to divisions and subdivisions that don't exist. There's a partially constructed police building on the corner of seventh and Wilson that never got finished but is still on the records, whoever's been doing this is sending all the money there, at least on paper. I need to get my hands on the original files, the ones stored in the City's Hall of Records. They're converted into print, so I'll actually be able to read the name on the damn files."
You hear him muttering to himself as he drops something heavy on a table or desk.
"Whoever decided to demand cursive signatures from men who can barely write is a moron... wait, you know how to write don't you Barnaby?"

"Yeah, I mean... Sometimes I forget capital letters but i can read perfectly fine."

"It's a damn shame, but better than most. And it's reassuring to he- Ah, wonderful."

You unlock the front door, whispering so as not to alert your sleeping family.
"What?"

"I've got the form we're looking for. It should be in the main building. Meet me outside City Hall. I'll be on the rooftop opposite the main building."

"Wait, are we breaking in?"

"Of course, the conspiracy cannot know of our involvement."

Fuck yeah!
Bloody hell. His voice cuts off after that, kind of rude honestly.

Who cares, I get to watch you put my lessons into effect.

What lessons?
Jack is silent, but you are communicated the idea of a winking eye and cheeky grin. Right, of course.

You're halfway through changing into your Ripper disguise when realisation hits.

Switchblade is the only weapon that won't attract suspicion from Collin. I'm down to bring the rifle but it means we won't be able to use it for any extra-curricular work. A detective as good as Collin will probably be able to match any ripper-connected shootings to the rifle.

He'd also most likely question why we have a rifle and why we're bringing it into a stealth mission.

Also, he thinks that we've already gone out and done some vigilante work for cash, so the switchblade is definitely a more reasonable choice, especially if we say that it's only used as an intimidation tool to work with our ability.

You skulk out of the house in your new getup. You're wearing a neckerchief over your face, but you're actually planning to ask whether or not you can borrow a mask from Colin. It's night proper now, and still raining heavily. There are many dangers on Brockton's streets, but you pass swiftly and silently with Jack's advice in your ears. You sneak up drainpipes and over rooftops, ducking into alleys whenever necessary. In the end it only takes you a few hours to get into the nice part of town.

You know because you stop having to dodge gangers and start having to dodge coppers. If you were a gentleman there'd be no trouble, but since you're obviously poor the chances of you spending the night in a cell for "loitering" are far too high for you to take the chance.

Eventually you come to City Hall, all lit up with electric lamps and other such wonders of technology. You even see a parked automobile outside. There also happen to be multiple police officers strolling about the area. City Hall's archive contains copies of all the important paperwork in the city, so the government is understandably leery about letting oiks like you in.

"There you are."

Colin (you recognize the voice) steps out a chimney's shadow. He's dressed in what looks like a cross between a military uniform and a police uniform, with a peaked cap above a single breasted suit. He has a truncheon on his belt and a revolver under his arm.

"It's not the best costume, but I guess you were working with limited resources... Before we go in there's a few things I'd like to know, I came up with a few plans depending on what your powers could be, but I do need to know exactly what it is you can do.
He stands and tilts his head to the side, letting the light reflect off the side of a black iron mask.
"If you'll indulge me, may I make a guess?"

"Go ahead, we've got all night."

The detective raises his chin slightly and begins to circle you, both hands clasped behind his back as he observes and learns.
He wants to show off, but he's terrified of getting it wrong. He needs respect, praise. or he's nothing. This is the only thing he's good at. The only [/b] thing.
Detective Wallis:^^^

"There are a few things we can rule out immediately. I don't believe you to be an Inventor, I see no gadgets or contraptions on you... Yes definitely not, even if you were then you wouldn't have had enough time to create anything of worth. Artillery Gifts are often extremely destructive, and there has been no major damage to the city that isn't accounted for by other parties. You are unlikely to be a Brute as such abilities almost always come with visible physical change, you may be muscular for your age, but you work in very physical job. It takes almost four thousand newtons of force to crack bone. Once or twice a day would be easy, but day in day out? That will build muscle. I could simply go through the various available archetypes, but there is too much variation to do so and guess with any accuracy. Instead, I shall look at the formative moment. If it's not too much trouble?

"By all means. You're... right so far."

He stops circling now, focusing instead on your face. His eyes are shrouded under the peak of his cap but you know he's watching intently for reactions.

"The first instinct would be Defender, you were protecting your family after all. Taking the beatings so that they wouldn't, noble indeed but Defenders are born from singular incidents usually, not prolonged or extended situations of trauma. Masters almost always come about as a result of isolation, that cannot be it either because you weren't isolated were you? You had family, friends. No that couldn't be it. Prolonged traumatic situations that result in a powerful revelation. You're an Inquirer aren't you? By your own account, you fought back when you realised he was going to attack the others. When you realised that Barnaby wasn't enough. You needed a way of fighting back, and you needed it there and now. Am I getting close?

You grit your teeth and steel yourself, it hurts, hearing him talk about what happened in such a horribly detached[/b] way. You're not just hurt either, you're furious. he's standing there and you can Feel the smugness pouring off of him. "Yeah, you're pretty close. I can tell what people are afraid of, their deepest darkest secrets. It's like I've got a voice in my head telling me everyone's weaknesses, what they're scared of."

Colin Wallis:v
Colin stills as you say that, swallowing audibly as he takes a step backwards.

"Ah... and, it's always on?"

"Yes, always. I can tune it out most of the time but it just gets louder next time it comes around."

"So you know what happened to me then?"

"No, not all of it at least, I have to concentrate to get more than a sentence or two. I have to focus it."

"Of course, of course. I didn't mean to infer anything."

"I get it."

Well, guess we're going with plan H then. We'll infiltrate through the roof and go for a stealthy approach. Have you ever snuck into a building before?

"Why would I have?"

the next sentence comes out a bit hurried, and you can feel the awkwardness afterwards as he realises what he said. You even see his hand twitch upwards towards his face as he says it.
"Well you are from the lower class..."

And the anger's back.

"Wait, shit no. I didn't-"

You cut him off with a raised finger and a step forwards, your words spat through clenched teeth.
"Look mate, I'll forgive you for it this once. But you better learn quickly to be a bit more careful with your words. What you were saying earlier, about how I got my Gifts? I let it go because you weren't there, you didn't know how it felt but then you just assume I'm a thief? You need to choose your words more carefully mate. Words are important, and what you say is important. You can kill with words if you know the right ones."

Colin Wallis:???

You spend a few seconds like that, stood there in silence on top of the roof. Eventually the detective stands back and bows his head.
"Right... well. Shall we get going? Follow me."

And he's off flying across the roof on some sort of rope set up between the two roofs.
"After you boss man..." And then you're off too. climbing across behind him.

The moon is high, and it takes you a minute or so to get across, before finding yourself at the top of the records building.

There's a great glass window in the top of the room from which you can see guards patrolling, policemen dutifully checking the all important bureaucracy that holds the city together.

Colin nods to you, and you nod back.
Time to get to work.

How many times does that make it now that Armsmaster has gone full social retard in this quest?

I'm pretty sure he's done that in nearly every encounter we've had with him, so 10 I'd imagine.

The two of you pull the window open and descend down an unnervingly thin rope that Wallis had secreted in one of his pockets, it's a bit hard to grip but it holds and before long you're down on the ground. You channel what you've seen and felt of how Jack moves when stalking prey, the light footsteps and smooth movements blend together until you feel like you're almost floating on air. Even Colin is surprised at how silently you swoop through the halls and corridors.

There's a close call or two, but there's always a convenient hiding spot nearby that you can slip into and evade the guard. Jack's helpful for that. He helps you keep an eye on guards and counts out their patrol timings. It's pretty damn useful having a passenger in your head.

Your luck doesn't keep unfortunately, and you turn a corner at the wrong time, straight into a guard. He's an older man, who hasn't a single hair left on him that isn't white, all wrinkles and drooping moustache.

He's about two feet from you, and Colin is back around the corner.

You go to grab the old man by the lapel, but he twists away and screams. A clumsy hook from you bounces his head off the wall. And before he can get up Colin is on him, spraying him with some sort of gas from his cuff. The two of you lock eyes as colin stands up, hearing the rushed footsteps from all around you. And in a moment of perfect synchronicity...

Shit!
Shit!
Shit!

You sprint down to the room where your records are kept, Colin slamming the door behind him just before a heavyset guardsman collides with it.

"Well, might as well get looking."
You switch positions with the Inventor, holding the door shut as he rifles through cabinets and desk drawers, searching for a trace of what you came here for. There's a hideous sound, like someone sucking on their soup spoon but so much worse and so much louder. It stops for just a second and then...

That's when you hear the explosion. Truth be told it's less of an explosion, more like tearing metal mixed with human screams of several different pitches and volumes. Like someone snuck up behind a choir and tore their nails down a chalkboard. And then come the voices.

"What the fuck just happened!?"
"VICTORIA, WHERE ARE YOU?"
Shut the hell up Dean, I'd be more worried about us.

By the same token, would picking Fear and Loathing Act 2 cause us to continue from right here in the Ripper!Barnaby storyline? What I'm trying to ask is a continuity/plotline switching question, but it's hard to put it into words because of the multiverse shenanigans we unleashed on top of threads being threads.

Yeah I agree. Shit got fucked after the bank heist, plus you can post/format much much better now. I gotta say VOID, anonymous bitches whining hard enough for you to break the timelines and create the quest multiverse is one hell of a way for you to grow and develop as a QM.

One Bad Day Changelog V1.1
>fixed a bug that made Armsmaster consistently underperform in melee combat.
>Coil will no longer “just give up” should his attacks be thwarted a few times, we envisioned him as a potent mid game threat and these changes should help reflect that.
>Kaiser no longer sends rank one thugs to their doom endlessly. This was due to a bug that gave him essentially endless minions.
>Miss Militia, Velocity and Dauntless encounter rates buffed.
>fixed an exploitable that allowed instant construction of tinker tech.
>updated combat system to mimic Fear and loathing, which has been well received.
>Manic’s skill trees rebalanced, renamed. Mad combat is now Agent of Chaos.
Silver tongue is now Trickster.
Art of speed is now Joyride.

>>Kaiser no longer sends rank one thugs to their doom endlessly. This was due to a bug that gave him essentially endless minions.

Aww, I'll miss gassing the Nazi's. It was easy ironic humor.

Then again a true artist must work for his craft, and I suppose it's only fair. Also the less mooks he sends the more capes he sends and putting Hookwolf's head on our wall is a hell of a better status symbol. That and I wonder if he'd cackle like a hyena or laugh like the duck hunt dog when he gets a hit of the good shit.
>>

One Bad Day Act Two: Laugh and Cry.
>>
>>2734963
When we do some villainous stuff like rob a bank, I saw we do it all silly like in a golden age comic villain, both for the fun and creativity and so more anons are willing to commit crimes. I'm all for keeping the karma more ir less balanced and I think we did that pretty well over all, I just think planning fun crimes would get more people into doing them since a combination of moralfaggotry and anons justifiably being unwilling to shit on the people whose lives are already miserable from the grimdark setting and lychopaths woth super powerrs that practically run this place. Their lives suck enough as is.
>>
>>2735271
Maybe even have a calling card to leave behind because Manic gives no fucks

So now Jobmaster will no longer give us his arms for free.
>Coil will no longer “just give up” should his attacks be thwarted a few times, we envisioned him as a potent mid game threat and these changes should help reflect that.
But will he still have an inexplicable penchant for hawaiian shirts after the reboot? Because of his little "vacation"?
>Kaiser no longer sends rank one thugs to their doom endlessly. This was due to a bug that gave him essentially endless minions.
Oh great, now he'll come to fuck us up personally after 3 failures of his minions and capes.
