You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

"You know, you don't have to come along..." Morgan says nervously as she mounts the back of her freshly tamed giant eagle, Engel.

You just look curiously at her. This would be the fastest way to find Solaire, wouldn't it?

"W-well, you see..." Morgan mumbles.

"SHE THINKS YOU'RE GONNA BE TOO HEAVY!" Nino yells from behind.

"Nino!" Morgan groans.

"Hey, the squirt's right." Naru shrugs.

"I'm kinda jealous though..." Niko muses as she ogles Engel.

"Right, right, let's just do this quick, okay?" Morgan sighs as she motions for you to get on Engel's back.

You can see the eagle turn his head to glare at you. No doubt he wasn't completely okay with this, either. But there wasn't any other way from what you could see.

Of course, you'd have to sit behind Morgan...

You feel Morgan's body stiffen in shock and surprise, but she manages to shake it off. You thankfully are considerate enough not to hold her too tightly or in some place inappropriate.

"A-all right, Engel let's go!" Morgan says with as much confidence as she can muster.

Engel turns his head backwards and seems to shake his head, apparently sensing Morgan's embarrassment. The giant eagle then starts at a little hop and run before leaping off the edge of the Monastery wall. There's a brief drop, but Engel spreads his wings. A strong gust blows, giving the eagle the necessary lift to start rising into the sky.

You look behind yourself to see Nino jumping up and down and waving with both her arms, while Naru and Niko both visibly give a sigh of relief. Down below, you saw the Templars on the ground pause and gaze up at the sight.

"All right, so it should be this way." Morgan points to the direction of the quest area. Engel nods and tilts his body, changing course to the desired direction.

"Should we fly high or low?" Morgan asks.

Hm, well, flying high would mean you'd have a better view of the area, but would make you easier to spot in turn. Flying low meant your vision wouldn't be as great, but you'd also be harder to detect from a distance. This was an important consideration since Engel's flying would be affected by all the weight he was carrying.

After all, who knew what threats could be lurking out there?

You point upwards. This was a time to fly high!

Morgan nods and turns back to Engel, yelling in his ear.

"Higher!"

Engel spreads his wings, catching more wind and he rises higher and higher into the sky.

You're briefly blinded by Sol's early morning glare, but once your vision clears, your breath is taken away. In front of you was a sea of rolling green, interrupted by the odd low cloud. The wind was harsh and cold up here, whistling as it flows over your armor and ruffling Morgan's hair and Engel's feathers. Morgan winces but smiles in spite of the combination of Sollight and biting wind.

"Last time I was up here I was too busy trying to wrangle Engel into listening to me." Morgan explains. "Never had to the time to just, enjoy the view, you know?"

You nod in agreement as Engel continues to glide through the air.

You pat Morgan's head, making sure to get the area just between her wolf ears. Morgan doesn't visibly react, but you take that as a good sign. After all, if she really didn't like it, she'd be quick to let you know.

Engel continues to glide through the air, and you and Morgan continue to scan the ground looking for any signs of Solaire.

"Hey, what's that?" Morgan points to the left.

You turn your head and immediately spotted several black columns of smoke rising from the forest. Some sort of fire?

"It's nowhere near the fields the giant worm's supposed to be attacking." Morgan points out. Indeed, the fields were in the opposite direction, to the right. "It might be something else."

Or it meant trouble.

However, as Engel drops closer to the ground, you see a brief glint as an arrow breaches the leaves, heading right for your head.

Thankfully, Morgan's reflexes were quick and her arm whips out and snatches the arrow in mid air mere inches from your helmet. You didn't even want to begin to wonder what would have happened if it had connected.

But you didn't have time for that. You were under attack!

"Engel! Faster!" Morgan yells.

Engel shrieks in response as he starts flapping his wings rapidly to gain more speed and altitude. However, arrows continued to lance upwards from the trees.

You stand your ground as incoming arrows bounce and glance off of your armor. This buys Engel enough time to fly out of their range, and the arrow fire becomes more sporadic.

"Okay, I think we're safe." Morgan finally breathes and looks at Engel's arrow wounds. "But I don't think Engel has much left in him."

This was certainly true. But landing now meant whoever fired at you could catch up with you.

You point to the nearest clearing, which should be a relatively safe spot for Engel to land. Morgan nods and tugs at Engel's feathers, turning him towards the clearing. Engel lands and stumbles, and you and Morgan quickly disembark.

"Oh no, Engel..." Morgan bites her lip as she inspects the eagle's wounds.

Engel merely shuffles around, trying to find a comfortable position to rest.

"I don't want to try and pull the arrows out right now. It might end up just hurting him more." Morgan sighs.

You point to the forest in the direction of the ambush. Such an attack could not go unanswered. In addition, they had to be eliminated anyways if you wanted a safe line of retreat back to the Monastery.

"All right, let's go, then." Morgan nods as she gets up. "But I have to let you know, I don't think those were Elves that attacked us."

You turn back to Morgan.

"See? Look." Morgan brings out the arrow she had snatched out of the arrow and throws it to you. You catch the arrow and glance at it, and immediately figure it out.

The bow had a steel arrowhead, and was manufatured. Elves never used steel in their arrows. They were all grown in a single piece with natural sharp points.

That meant something other than Elves was out there.

"I've got a real bad feeling about this." Morgan mumbles. "How do we handle this."

You very quickly see them lurking in the trees. Dark, hooded shapes sticking close to the trees and darkness, their weapons glinting in the early morning light. Where these people after you?

Or were they after Solaire?

Well, in either case, it didn't matter what these ambushers were planning or where they came from. They were enemies, and you couldn't just let them sit back and get the upper hand over you.

As your opponents closed in, you could tell from their speed and movements that they were not armored. Or at least not heavily so. That gave you something of an advantage in that it would be much easier for you to harm them than they could to you, even if they were wielding specifically anti-armor weaponry.

Four ambushers charge in to meet you, but one thrust from your halberd's spear point plunges into the chest of one of them. There's a shriek and gurgle as your target dies, slumping over and sliding off your weapon.

Arrows whistle by and clatter off your armor in the meantime as six more of the enemy hang back to drop arrows on you. One of them yelps and falls from his treetrop position, an arrow protruding from his neck.

Morgan joins in the battle, launching arrows with deadly precision and forcing the enemy archers to either take cover or return fire against her, lessening the pressure on you.

However, this also meant she was a target now, too. Two of the remaining melee attackers split up, intending to charge around you to get up close to Morgan while one stands his ground to keep your attention.

Taking advantage of their superior numbers. Smart.

However, it turns out that you didn't even have to worry, as one arrow comes zipping out of the trees and lands right into the center of the face of one of the flankers. The second flanker is crushed as Engel drops in from above, crashing through leaves and branches and landing right on top of him.

That only left your last attacker, armed with a heavy mace. He hesitates at seeing his two fellows taken out so swiftly and easily, allowing you to recover and put your focus back on him. You spin your heel, swinging your halberd around for maximum effect. The bladed end of your weapon embeds itself into the man's neck, cleaving straight through and sending his head flying through the air.

The arrow fire immediately ceases as the remaining archers break and flee, making a run for it.

You pause and wait for Morgan to leap down from her perch and keep up with. Engel meanwhile simply settles down, keeping an eye on your surroundings just in case.

"So who the hell are these guys?" Morgan wonders as she glances at the scattered corpses.

You carefully use the hilt of your halberd to pull back the hood of one of the slain opponents, revealing a face etched with black tattoos and markings. The unmistakable signs of an assassin order of some sort.

"Assassins?" Morgan blinks. "Who would send so many out here?"

You shrug. You were fairly certain it wouldn't be the Elves, though. If they wanted someone dead, they had plenty of ways to do it themselves.

"So who hired them?" Morgan asks, and then pauses, horror creep on her face. "Who were they after?"

You point at their weapons. Heavy maces, hammers, and axes. The sort of weapons you'd use to beat your way through armor. And at their sides were small mailbreakers, meant to punch through armor with their narrow points.

"So they're after a knight, which means either you or... Solaire!" Morgan gasps. "What do we do?!"

If these assassins were still out here, that meant their target was still alive. Perhaps Solaire was much closer than you thought. But the issue was, do you continue on the crop fields to find him, or had the assassins already closed in on his position...?

You point towards the fields. You'll start your search for Solaire there as planned. Perhaps the assassins were just staging in the forest here in preparation for searching for him, as well.

"All right." Morgan nods.

Engel the squawks, causing Morgan to pause.

"Should we have Engel scout out above us?" She asks. "In the state he's in now, he can't really carry you, but he can still fly."

Well, having a giant eagle in the air would certainly give you a recon advantage, but Engel was wounded and continued exertion could have repercussions down the line.

You shake your head. It was best to keep Engel grounded for now. It would just have to be you and Morgan to continue the search.

"All right." Morgan nods and turns to Engel. "Just stay here and rest, okay? If we need you I'll call you."

Engel seems to nod and settles down.

"Come on, we don't have any time to waste." Morgan says as she takes the lead, heading off towards the fields.

You follow her close behind, knowing that Morgan was right. Hopefully the both of you weren't already too late...

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thrad is next week, and don't forget Macross on Friday!
