You are the Overseer of an alien invasion fleet sent to subjugate a primitive civilisation in a far flung sector of the galactic arm. This civilisation, calling themselves the humans have proven themselves uncannily resilient. When you arrived your clumsy attempts at reconnaissance prompted an aggressive response from the indigenous governments. Further attempts to undermine humanity’s defences through infiltration failed miserably and only gave them more time to prepare.

You took the time to adapt your ground forces to Earth’s environment, making it easier to keep them supplied further down the line. You also massacred much of the planet’s scientific community to curb their ability to reverse engineer your technology.

Despite these successes your first invasion wave suffered massive casualties. The human armies leveraged their superior numbers to prevent your forces from scoring a decisive victory. In response you launched terror operations against key population centres in the hopes of drawing away human forces from more important targets. This failed. Human morale has suffered, but their military and industrial base remains largely intact and their armies are depleted but still functional.

This could take longer than you expected…
((Alright since somebody took the trouble to dig up the old thread I have decided to continue the quest from the “Reverse X-COM” timeline. https://archived.moe/qst/thread/2451993/))

Interlude:

The X-COM base; Location Unknown

Valerie “Valhalla” Langdon stared listlessly at the line of body bags stretched out across the hangar floor. It had been two days since the last mission in North America, the clean up teams had landed with battlefield salvage… and the corpses of her squad mates. Only a few months ago there had been an entire platoon of them; fresh faced recruits from all over the world, selected to fight the alien menace. Of that initial cohort only her and the sniper Creighton were still alive.
A muffled a curse alerted Valerie to the presence of Dr. Sindley; X-COM’s head of research. The cocksucker had tripped over one of the body bag’s in his rush to inspect the corpse of an alien soldier being loaded off one of the dropships. A gaggle of scientists waiting to inspect the corpse rapidly dispersed as Sindley approached. The shit head probably thought it was out of deference and not because Valerie was furiously marching up behind him.

“Finally I get to look at one of these things up close, fascinating. I wonder how… ”
Valerie spun him round by the shoulder and smashed her fist into his jaw. Sindley’s glasses went skittering across the hangar floor while the man himself stumbled backwards and fell on his ass. He barely had time to figure out what happened before Valerie roughly hauled him to his feet.

“Do you know how many people died to get you your latest plaything?” she hissed.

He squealed as Valerie gripped the lower half of his face and forcefully turned his head towards the body bags.

“I want you to count them, go on; put that doctorate to use and tell me how many.”

Sindley’s eyes darted feverishly over the assembled dead, after a few seconds an unintelligible groan escaped his fractured jaw.

“Now add that to the thousands who died across the world. I want you to remember that number Doctor, but most of all: I want you to remember that the next time you get a boner over a piece of shit AYY, to SHOW SOME FUCKING RESPECT for the people that got it for you!”

Valerie dropped Sindley back on his ass and left him to cradle his battered face. Creighton was waiting for her at the edge of the hangar. For awhile he said nothing as Valerie marched angrily towards the barracks.

“Fucker makes me sick. Tripping over human bodies to drool over one of Them.” She hissed.

Creighton gave a tired sigh.

“I hope you didn’t fuck him up too badly; he is our head scientist. If he gets brain damage because of you the Commander is gonna give you more than a slap on the wrist.”

She snorted derisively. “Who knows, maybe a few knocks to the skull might make him smarter. He only got the job because everybody else was vaped by the aliens.”

“I wouldn’t really know but one of the lab boys told me that Valen and Shen would have managed to upgrade our gear by now, a shame. I can only hope our man Sindley can channel all that enthusiasm into giving us an edge rather than fantasizing about winning multiple Nobel prizes.”

“Maybe someone should tell him the place in Sweden that handed out those things got destroyed along with Alexei’s entire squad and a whole company of Swedish armed forces.”

“Speaking of squads we’ll be getting replacements soon. I wonder if anyone will survive long enough for me to remember their name…”

“Fuck survival. Survival is for rest of the planet. Our job is to kill Ayys.”

------------------

Excerpt from lab report 10:

The last week has provided us with no shortage of alien salvage, unfortunately much of it is too damaged to provide any real insight into how it works. I understand that excessive firepower is often needed to neutralize the alien threat, but without more intact examples of alien technology even a man of my intellect can only do so much. The fact that one of your soldiers fractured my jaw after perceiving some imagined treason where there was only professional enthusiasm, does not help matters. Any pent up aggression they might have should be expended on the aliens. I cannot do my job properly if I must constantly worry about being assaulted by shell-shocked Neanderthals looking to blame the deaths of their comrades on anyone but themselves… or the enemy.

For now we can only begin to scratch the surface in understanding how much of the alien technology works, however this does not mean that no progress has been made. Indeed we have been able to find a way to break down alien salvage into component materials and make use of them ourselves. Alien alloys are lighter and stronger than anything we can produce. Even before the invasion many governments had experimental weapons programs that stalled due to shortcomings in our own materials engineering. With alien alloys many of these projects have suddenly become viable again. We may not be replicating the alien energy weapons any time soon but thanks to my discovery expect some exciting new developments in the near future.

((Alright, you finally get to make a decision.))

>Current Perks:
>Flyer Stealth Modifications: Your Ships have been modified to be undetectable to long range human sensors. (At least until they advance their own technology.) Grants bonuses where human response time is a factor to mission success.

>Ground Unit Environmental Adaptation: Ground units are can breathe the local atmosphere and subsist on local resources to an extent. This increases the amount of time your forces can operate until re-supply is required.

>Human Network Infiltration: Your analysts have access to both secure and unsecured human internet communications.

>Basic Earth Studies: You have foundational knowledge of Earth’s Biome’s and lifeforms, paving the way for future adaptation or bio-engineering programs.

>Available Fleet Assets:

>Scout Flyers: Fast but weak scout ships.

>Light Combat Flyers: Fighter craft and corvettes, not your most potent craft but still more than a match for human planes.

>Deployed Ground Assets:

>Light Ground Forces: Hulking Infantry Drones and some heavier power suits. Superior to human infantry but still vulnerable to human heavy weapons.

Reserve Assets:
>Heavy Ground Forces: Large warmechs, each capable of decimating whole companies of human forces.

Watdo Fleetside?:

>Refit light capital ships for atmospheric flight. (Gain Cruisers as reserve assets next month)
>Engineer a disease that targets humans.
>Engineer hyper aggressive lifeforms to terrorize humanity.
>Gain a better understanding of human culture and society. (Opens up options for psychological warfare and provides bonuses to infiltration)

Watdo Planetside?

>Deploy Heavies and renew the assault on strategic targets.
>Intensify terror campaign against population centres.
>Dig in and prepare a base of operations.
>Spread your forces out and attack targets of opportunity.

>Write in

>Refit light capital ships for atmospheric flight. (Gain Cruisers as reserve assets next month)
>Deploy Heavies and renew the assault on strategic targets.

Our primary advantage as of this moment in time is the human inability to research or reproduce our technology. Our goals should be to secure as large an area of land, destroy as much industry and population as possible before this fact is rectified.

Deploying our heavies and bringing in yet heavier fleet assets will assist in this goal. If we are lucky we will manage to eliminate all large scale military resistance in the air, granting us the option of focusing purely on ground engagements.
>>
>>2815255
>Engineer hyper aggressive lifeforms to terrorize humanity.

Keep them off balance, redirect their energies to threats that require time and attention and concentration of populations to insure security lest they be consumed by our imminent terrors.

>Spread your forces out and attack targets of opportunity.

With your heavy walkers deployed the humans stand no chance. Their armies are already depleted and this time you turn their tactics against them; whenever they begin to concentrate fire like they used to you counter attack with your war mechs. Their heavy weapons annihilate armour and artillery alike. In the end the humans have no choice but to retreat. You order your warminds not to pursue them too eagerly. While your own casualties are relatively few the humans still managed to down a handful of your mechs. Powerful as they are they can still be put at risk should you over extend yourself.

More worrying though are the reports you hear coming from outside the main battle lines. X-COM is on the move again and have managed to successfully disable and capture some infantry drones. This is worrying. X-COM is a small force in the larger war effort and they cannot be everywhere at once, but when they do appear, it often causes a major setback. Reports from your warminds indicate that they are more skilled and better equipped than they were when first encountered in the early stages of the invasion.

Other reports show that a new human force calling themselves “The Exalted” has begun defending the previously neglected human population centres. By itself this is not noteworthy as you had deprioritised terror attacks and redeployed most of your troops anyway. What is interesting is that the “The Exalted” are some kind of cult that venerates aliens. It is unclear whether the aliens they venerate include you, but what is known is that they are growing in power and influence especially since much of Earth’s population feels that the world governments have failed to adequately defend them.
> Cruiser Class Flyers added to reserve assets.

Getting a bit sleepy guys, I know we're only one update in but I'm call it a night and just do slow updates over the course of tomorrow.
>>
>>2815558
What would be the benefit of having a base of operations set up?
>>
>>2815564

Passive buffs mainly. Makes everything just a little easier if you've got a base on the ground rather than having to go back and forth from orbit.
>>
>>2815558
>Search for the X-COM base.
>Set up a base of operations.

At this point we have reduced the ability of the enemy to resist to minimal levels. Their numbers, industrial capacity and current equipment are all too few to threaten us. Setting up a base of operations will be useful in ensuring our continued dominance and because we do plan on occupying this world.

However, X-Com is proving to be too dangerous to allow it's continued survival. The continued efforts of it to neutralise the tech gap, although slow to succeed, are apparently paying off. Considering they are capable of major setbacks as of this moment in time and they just recently acquired yet more samples of our technology, we must immediately move to eliminate them.

Even with your new found success you remain wary of X-COM, if anyone could cause a reversal this late in the game it would be them. Tracking their dropships proves frustrating as they take routes through heavily defended airspace where even your stealth scouts cannot follow. Still slowly but surely you assemble a collection of little clues that narrow the search area. The breakthrough comes when one of your scouts picks up a faint signal. It is brief, weak but unmistakable; the signal of one of your captured drones. With this final piece of information you pin point the location of the X-COM base within the continent of Africa.

With the human military weakened you decide to consolidate your own position and begin construction of a base somewhere beneath the jungles of central America. Construction goes relatively smoothly and by the end of the month you have a functioning base of operations with which to conduct resupply operations and aid in research.

For the most part X-COM seems less active this month, analysts theorize several reasons ranging from letting wounded recover to diversion of resources to other areas.

The Exalted continue their influence within human society, but run into problems since being a cult that is seen to venerate aliens during an alien invasion will not sit well with some people no matter how much aid you hand out or how many lives you save. A small propaganda war begins between the remaining world governments and the Exalted. For now you are content to let the humans squabble amongst themselves.

How's the rest of the world faring compared to xcom? In terms of resistance they're putting up that is.
>>
>>2818972
Most of the conventional resistance is lead by the world powers. So basically China, U.S, Russia and to a lesser extent Europe.

All have suffered heavy losses. At this point the remaining forces are clustering around defensive strong points at key strategic locations. They simply don't have the resources to protect everyone anymore.

The irony is that after the initial terror attacks on the cities failed to draw away human forces the rest of the world is largely unscathed, albeit still teetering on the brink of societal collapse.

For a while your analysts have suspected that the humans had been working on something big, something that could give them a reprieve from your onslaught. Whatever it was, it was likely waiting for you where they thought you would attack next. You would not give them that opportunity. With the previous losses suffered the human military could not afford to defend all of humanity’s essential infrastructure. Your analysts identify poorly defended industrial and agricultural sites that the humans could simply not ignore. In a somewhat risky manoeuvre you disperse your forces to attack these targets.

You needn’t have worried. In a masterful display your warminds leverage the fleet’s stealth capabilities to perform hit and run attacks on your chosen targets. When the humans mustered a strike force to aid the area they would arrive only to find the site decimated and your forces long gone. Then they would get ambushed on the way back to base. You smile figuratively as you observe on of your cruisers coming in almost directly on top of a human armoured column and vaporising it before they can co-ordinate return fire. You casually note that the human armoured vehicles have received small upgrade packages making them more durable overall, but whatever increase in combat effectiveness they gained, it was too little, too late.

Even X-COM is taken by surprise. Now that you know the location of their base it is easy to anticipate the flightpaths of their dropships as they scramble their teams to counter your raids. More worrying is the fact that X-COM’s interceptors have become significantly more advanced. Still inferior to your own craft but the surprising increase in performance was the difference between you annihilating every strike team and having a few dropships manage to limp back to base.

With the primary human opposition on the back foot you spare a little effort to investigate this “Exalted” faction who seem to hold increasing influence among the surviving humans. You new generation of infiltrators is much improved over the last one. The weakening grip of the world governments also translates into less scrutiny.

>cont
>>
>>2819335
Your infiltrators join the cult as new acolytes and proceed to ingratiate themselves with the faithful. Progress is slow, as while the cult readily accepts newcomers it does not easily elevate them. Something about the mysteries of the faith being revealed slowly and only to the worthiest. Never the less one of your creatures manages to rise to the rank of deacon and is entrusted with slightly more sensitive information than the layman. The Exalted seem to have a remarkable amount of private backing, they have more manpower and resources than their cult status would suggest. They also have a paramilitary arm that rivals that of a large nation’s military. How a new faction could amass this kind of power without you noticing sooner is alarming. Much of the cult’s inner working is still a mystery to you, but your spy knows that it is directed by a mysterious inner circle who in turn answer to a self-styled prophet. This prophet claims to have foreseen your arrival. He refers to you as “The Invaders” (lots of people call you that, but somehow you can hear the capital letters when he says it) and says that you were sent to test humanity. This prophet spins a narrative of tribulation that matches your current actions. Curiously he foretells that humanity will ultimately triumph and that the survivors will be “Exalted”, elevated to a higher state of being or something. You see no reason to believe that this “prophet”, the man who calls himself Caine; is anything but a charlatan profiting of off your arrival. Still it is clear that the Exalted are no friends of yours and will have to be crushed in turn once you put the last nail in the coffin of world governments.

>Gained asset: Exalted spy cell, useful for further infiltration and intelligence gathering within the Exalted.

>Gained Perk: Expanded fleet presence; with extra ships available for operations within Earth’s atmosphere you gain a bonus to actions where air power is a factor.
