You’re not one to get into people’s business but if you’re staying with someone for over a month in the same space as a closet then there’s not much room for avoiding topics or keeping small talk. Finding out about Naomi the first day en route to Leo is one thing but Coraline is an entirely different kind of beast since even she doesn’t know what secrets she keeps. Even if you don’t mean to pry, there’s the itch in the back of your head that’s bleeding curiosity and concern -- one that you’re not too sure what would happen if you start to scratch.

It’s been three days since the start of your flight. Three days of being cooped up with Coraline and Naomi. Three days of being here, in that black sea with only thoughts to occupy your mind. Most thoughts have been worries so far. Worries of work, of money, of friends and family, of simple things, and most importantly things you have no real business in concerning yourself with. Coraline is one of them.

Some girl she is. Only part machine but acts like the whole package and a puzzle of something wicked. You can’t read her, not really anyways. What emotion she does show doesn’t really apply to most situations. That stoic spartan of a face she holds so close. You only started to try to figure out the puzzle with the few pieces you’ve been given. A ship, a girl, and a whole lot of wires. The book Naomi bought you at the store has helped but asked more questions than not.

You’ve come up with an idea of what it is that’s been under her skin, though you’re not sure she even knows -- not really anyways. She’s been talking a lot about a drug that you’re not sure of. A drug that helps the body and keeps it from rejecting the machines.

Though this isn’t a perfect explanation since it doesn’t really address the lack of memory or corruption in her processors. There might even be chemicals at work which are disrupting her ability to process anything but even then, you’re not sure. What light the book did give you seems so dim compared to what you suspect. Hell, you half think she’s some wayward super soldier, or worse a robot. She certainly doesn’t act human -- that, you know.

Naomi’s a different puzzle, one you’re more familiar with. She’s someone with a dream and a purpose -- someone like you.

It’s evening -- says so on your mobile. A time kept standard for God knows how long, something you’re pretty sure you know why but you’re just drawing a blank. Probably military or whatever nuance a standard time gives to the guys upstairs. You take away the screen you’ve been staring at for the past three or more hours and turn to the two girls who seem to have quieted themselves while watching a show you can’t see. The two of them seem to have been getting along today, or at least talking to each other since Coraline’s not asleep and Naomi seems to have stopped talking about personal struggles.

>Time to get something to eat. Another nutri-bar for your troubles. You’re hungry anyways and thinking on a stomach that wants to think for you doesn’t get you far. You also skipped on breakfast.
>”Hey Coraline, Zaxa-what-cha-ma-call-it, why do you need it? Do you know anything else since you woke up from your cryo, maybe something from the ship?”
>”Hey Coraline, can I see your neck? Need to see if there’s something wrong.” that’s where the book said a lot of the brain-augmenting cybernetics are placed at -- the base of the skull. If there’s something wrong then you could try to eyeball it.
>”Naomi, hey.. Uh, about what you said the other day.. Since you know a lot about what’s going down in Arcady, can you give me some pointers since I’m pretty sure I’m going to pair up with you in your investigation or whatever.” She knows more than in this whole situation. She probably knows more than anyone you’ve talked to about any of it though she sure as hell doesn’t act like it.

Welcome to For Hire.

Thank you for coming, to read and I hope you enjoy it enough to stick around.
The rules are simple but I’ll still explain them. Majority votes win and if you need to roll, I will state it. If anyone has any questions OOC, visit my discord, tweet me, or ask them after the current session.

I’m working on the character sheets and everything so expect them out either at the end of today or by the beginning of tomorrow. This will also come with a pastebin that explains the systems that the are present in the character sheet.

“Hey,” your voice croaks out as you lean yourself out of bed. Getting the two girls attention, you clear your throat and place yourself to the right of Coraline, “Uh, here, let me see your neck, Coraline.”

“Why’s that?” Naomi asks for Coraline as she takes a moment to pause the show they were watching. Coraline, on the other hand, just puts her back to you before leaning backwards as she looks down and presses her chin against the top of her chest.

“Oh I just want to see..” you trail off as you carefully move Coraline’s short white hair out of the way. Four panels which look like they open lie just under Coraline’s hair. It looks like it was recently shaved, her hair, as it seems to just almost abruptly end as the panels begin. “.. uhh, just wanted to see something.”

“Oh? What do you think? Something you read?”

“Yeah, something I read. Thought I could see if I could, uh, see. I mean, I thought I could check something out. It said that rejected cybernetics could begin to show signs of damage or wouldn’t really work that well. Though Coraline, uh, didn’t you say that you had like twenty or something days before your body would reject the augs?”

“Yes,” she says plainly. Her voice smooth as ever, the same stagnant pool of words she uses in the same tone and way. Methodically monotonous in every sense. Naomi seems to share your same feelings about it as you see her brow raise at Coraline’s answer. It would be odd if the rejection would start before it was supposed to since whatever concoction of drugs the mysterious they gave her before her flight under ice should have contained something that would make sure her body wouldn’t decay under the few days she’s been awake.

‘They’ would be another issue entirely. Baby steps, Sam. Can’t start something else before finishing the problem at hand. Your dad would have told you something similar, knowing him. First step would be Coraline. Taking a hand, you softly press against the back of Coraline’s neck, “So Naomi, tell me about Arcady.”

“Arcady? What would you like to know? There’s a lot to really talk about, I mean you probably know that they’re a genetic bioware corporation, just like Wynter and Python, though Python more than Wynter since Wynter does a lot of cybernetic prosthetics too. Arcady really just does pharmaceuticals and bioware, which are kinda like cybernetic prosthetics only instead of machine, it’s all flesh or something,” she starts off as you watch Coraline’s neck open up to a single panel of wires and what kind of resembles a sort of server for a computer or something only smaller and more compact.

(1/?)
>>
>>2833217
“Just, I mean, since you know a lot of what’s going down in Arcady or at Leo at least. Pretty sure once we head in system we won’t really have a whole lot of time to talk business since I got a feeling once we hit feet first we’ll be running -- er, well.. I mean since you’re doing your investigation and everything and I got the same kind of thinking with the whole deal I’ll be tagging along. I got things I need to know too..” you say as you get closer to Coraline’s, what you could only assume to be, dock. It looks like it at least how it was described in the book.

Everything’s so foreign to you even something as familiar as a computer seems miles ahead of what you’re used to dealing with. There’s several markings, serial codes, the repeating number of zero zero four, and what looks like a symbol of an upside down triangle. Something that seems to be familiar like you’ve seen it before though you’re not sure where. Probably the logo of a certain company or markings for something. Though, from what you can tell, this isn’t really what the book showed you. It seems.. custom.

“Well..” Naomi starts, “At Leo, you have the head scientist that oversees the entire project-- Matthew Wright. He works with a few different councils there so it’s not like we’d get an invitation to come and speak with the guy. There’s four major branches, one branch oversees the production of.. One of their painkillers. I never had it but I hear it’s pretty potent stuff. Another branch focuses on their research in symbiotes which seem to be a pretty recent development and are also pretty expensive last time I checked. Like a couple thousand standards for just one thing though that’s like one of their least expensive thing out there. Another branch seems to be with relations and general medical research, they seem to be running the clinics on Leo. There’s a main station, like really big station, up orbiting Leo which is where Matthew and the councils along with a few other guys are at.”

Naomi pauses as she watches you and Coraline. She leans closer as she starts back up, “And the final branch is the big one. Splicer. Research,” she says emphasizing the last two words before leaning back, “Leo is, after all, a sanctuary for splicers after the last splicer war.”

>”Splicers? I read a bit about those guys in school a long while back, aren’t they the genetically modified weirdos?”
>”So big man Matt, what does he do, what is he all about?” Start with the big names. Seems like this station in Leo is a major facility and you need to know the names of the guys in charge before you start to crack heads. Take names first.
>”Hey Naomi.. Have you seen this uhh.. upside down triangle before? Seems like a logo or something.”
>”You said you thought Adam was one of the bad guys before. What made you think that?” keep things small while you inspect Coraline.

“And Adam was with the uhh..”

“The general branch,” she finishes for you, “he was one of the guys that helped with newcomers and such,” Naomi says as she leans back to where she was sitting earlier. The dry air of the vent softly hits the back of your head as it starts to kick on. “He was one of the guys who were supposed to be accepting the girls that went missing. I thought he would be a part of the whole thing but I guess I’m wrong since him leaving seemed to have sparked something else.”

Whatever was Adam doing back in Arcady.. Seems like he got himself into something deep. Something even he couldn’t escape. A tragic series of something lead to this. Either someone jumped the gun and fired first with Adam leaving while kicking the hive or this was intentional. If Adam was in on the whole thing, you didn’t know. Wasn’t something he’d tell a kid like you, not in all the years of his storytelling had he said anything. A quiet man who liked to talk, probably what got him killed.

Keeping your thoughts at bay, you look at Coraline’s neck. A monument to technology -- a marrying of man and machine. You sigh, this is pretty much out of your paygrade. Cybernetics is in the left field while you’re still playing base. She’s a fastball that hit you hard and still has you caught in a daze, not like you had seen it coming anyways. You look to Naomi, she’s the same -- a fastball -- though nothing as difficult to piece together as Coraline is, one more literal than the other. “Splicers, huh? Pretty sure they taught me something about that in history class ten years ago. They the genetically modified weirdos, multi-armed, mutant lookin’ guys, right?”

“Right, well, sorta.. yeah,” she answers leaning against the desk, propping her head up with an arm, “Arcady, and the few other corporations before them like Animus or Obscurum though Arcady is likely a child company of both after the break up.. Or was it a merger.. ah, well anyways. Leo is a Slicer sanctuary. Arcady made most of them and still maintains them since they’re basically organic machines.”

“Organic machines? Jesus, that sounds awful,” you say half listening as you take a thumb and rub a barcode on the side of Coraline’s panel. She seems to not mind you poking around in her head, though you’re pretty sure it’s not something you should really be doing. Right beside the dock on the outside, near where her flesh begins and the metal ends, is a small square bandage. Probably an artifact from her drugs that hasn’t fully healed, though you do notice small dots near the inside of her elbows. Puncture wounds from needles perhaps?

“Uh, fun fact, splicers have been around for a long long long time. There’s these guys called ‘engees’ or something like that and they’re pitch black, four armed guys from the ark days. Some of these are still alive today, I think there was a guy at the bar that was boasting about still having one on his ship,” she continues as you look over Coraline’s body. “They’re probably expensive as hell to maintain since they require special equipment and such. There’s also a bunch of splicer mutants still on imperial worlds, or so I’ve heard. I think Leo is home to a specific group of splicers, one of the specialized military splicers, think they have a lot of weird little modifications.”

“Military splicers sound pretty dangerous with the whole crazy mutant thing they got going for them,” you say before pausing, staring at the small logo that seems to repeat itself. Looking back to where Coraline showed you her name, and what you guessed before was her model number, and spot the same symbol. “Hey Naomi.. Have you seen this symbol here? It’s like an upside down triangle with a bunch of lines, It looks Goddamn familiar but I can’t figure out where it’s from for the life of me.”

“Oh?” She says as she leans in to inspect what you’re pointing at. She traces her delicate fingers over Coraline’s forearm. The small lettering barely visible from even where you’re at. “Oh yeah, that’s--”

It’s getting late so I’m going to cut it off tonight at this. Thank you for reading and I really am sorry about being late and the slow updates today. Think the last few sessions have had really slow updates. I’ll try to make it up to you guys tomorrow! Hopefully things will start to heat up as you guys begin to delve deeper into the mystery that is Coraline.

Again, thank you for playing, I’ll start again tomorrow at 1pm Central. I also have a schedule if you want to follow that.

“BioTyk,” Naomi answers. “They’re cybernetics are pretty common and cheap enough to buy a lot of. Never had any cybers installed myself, but BioTyk is pretty standard.”

“These sure don’t look standard,” you reply. From what you can tell nothing about Coraline seems standard. From the way she looks to the gizmos and machines throughout her body. If she was machine then she sure ran hot for one -- she’s warm to the touch. It seems odd to you, looking at someone like a thing rather than a they.

“Are you sure, here let me have a--”

“That will be all,” Coraline says, cutting Naomi’s words off. Reaching a hand behind her, she carefully closes each of the panels connected to her neck. You move yourself away as she turns her back to the bed. Coraline’s not like this, not usually, though you’re not sure what her normal attitude is or if it’s just a product of her missing memories which, in extension, means she, herself, is missing.

“Oh, I’m, uh, sorry,” you apologize though confused, “Did I do something wrong or did I say something wrong?”

“No,” Coraline replies blankly before turning to face you. Her eyes are like ice, not the color but the feeling you get when you walk outside on a winter night -- unwelcoming and piercing. They’re dry and distant eyes but they’re entirely hers. They say eyes are the window to one’s soul, if you replace the windows does the soul look different in comparison? She waits a moment as her eyes rests upon your face, “I’m hungry.”

You’re hungry too, admittedly, though she catches you off guard with it. You half expected her to angry about something with how she acted even if she rarely shows emotion outside of small moments of expression. Naomi seems to agree with Coraline as well since it is getting late. You sigh as you open the cabinet above you and take out three Nutri-Bars before remembering that Coraline had left one out for you earlier.

Handing two to the girls, you unwrap your own. That symbol was on every piece of hers, probably got them all cheaper than buying something designer made. If they were cheap and in comparison cheaply made, then it would explain all the malfunctions she’s been having. Though none of it looked cheap to you, none of it seemed cheap anyways. It’s not like you have anything to go by since this is one of your first times seeing anything like it.

It could explain the malfunctions this early on in the rejection stages, but it doesn’t explain everything like the memory loss. Frankly you have no real clue on how any of it is supposed to look. Probably called the whole custom thing too early.. Or maybe not. Maybe you’re just overthinking the whole thing with how stressful the past few days have been.

(sorry for the slow update, friend was texting me)

Placing your empty wrapper into the bin under the desk, you silently reach into the cabinet and pull out three glasses and the half bottle of vodka from three nights ago. You pour out three glasses of the stuff before placing the bottle down. The strong smell burns the inside of your nose as you take one of the glasses. Naomi gives you a strange look before you just put your head back and open your mouth. The liquid burns as it makes its way down, coughing slightly, you place the empty glass onto the desk and lean back. “BioTyk?”

“Not thinking of getting drunk are you, Sammy?” Naomi says as she takes a glass herself and holds it for a moment.

“No, no..” you answer, “Just thought I might as well drink, been stressed with this whole thing.”

“Drinking doesn’t seem like a healthy way to deal with those sorts of problems,” Naomi says before taking a small sip from her own glass. Coraline seems to be indifferent to the whole conversation as she takes her own glass and fixates on the paused screen.

“Sure it isn’t but is helps you feel like it does,” you answer, waving off Naomi’s faux concerns, “Besides,” you pause, “BioTyk. What about them? I think I heard of them before but not sure where, they similar to Arcady?”

“Similar? Kind of, but not really,” Naomi replies vaguely, “They’re Cybernetic through and through. Kind of how Arcady focuses on medicine and such. BioTyk is an old.. old.. old company, started a while back while they were still connected to some joint imperial- U.G.E. research. They were the whole Oberon Incident kind of guys, you know.”

“I mean, are they like Arcady?”

“Oh,” she says before pausing and staring at her glass, taking a moment to drink the rest. She coughs for a while before continuing, “No, not really. Like I said, they’re old and did something shady. Doubt they would be pulling any stunts. And I know what you’re thinking ‘is biotic somehow connected to this whole Arcady thing.’ no no, they’re not. Arcady and BioTyk never worked together and BioTyk is too busy with their own problems.”

“What about Coraline?” you say, looking to Coraline. She turns to you and narrows her eyes at you before taking drinking the entire glass in the same way you did. She doesn’t seem show she cares about what you’re talking about except for maybe being annoyed at it.

“I doubt she’s connected to BioTyk. Besides, just a few standard pieces of their stuff doesn’t really mean she’s some super soldier or something,” Naomi says before placing the still nearly full glass of vodka on the desk. “Like I said, BioTyk is too busy with their own stuff with the military and the laws they have to deal with. Surprised they’re still afloat, really.”

“I’m still amazed how you know all of this,” you say pouring yourself another glass. Without a word, Coraline slides her own glass near yours as you pour and you fill hers as well.

“I’m a journalist, It’s my job,” Naomi says proudly with her hands on her hips, “Anyways, I’m probably going to sleep. Doubt this is anything major, Sam.”

>”What is at Holliday?” Coraline mentioned she wanted to go there before, might be connected. Though if slight annoyance turns to something else after you mention something Coraline said only to you, then maybe your paranoia from when you first met her was correct.

“Night,” you say as Naomi crawls into her designated sleeping spot. You’re still not sure how she finds a way to sleep in that thing, most of it being metal and bad padding. Coraline silently nods before taking the glass and drinking it whole. You follow suit and drink. Coraline seems to be able to handle her drink better than you, maybe she really is a robot. You watch for a moment as she unpauses the show she was watching and turns down the volume. “So Coraline..”

“Yes?”

“What do you think, about this whole thing? The whole BioTyk thing?” You say as to take out two more glasses.

“It’s not something I really thought about,” she says as you make your way into the bathroom and turn on the faucet. You take a second as you fill the glasses before crawling out and sitting near Coraline. She seems enthralled by the show as you hand her a glass of water as she takes it without looking. You watch as she watches, the show seems to be pretty funny if you had known what most of the jokes were about. You take a moment as you think things over, the whole few days have been nothing but one thing after the next. Today was quieter than the rest as you were able to read at least some but still, conversations with Naomi and Coraline seem to be wearing on you in a different way than you expected it would.

“Been a odd couple of days, huh?” you say before taking a sip of water. She turns to you before pushing her empty drinking glass toward you.

“Yes,” she says as you take the two empty glasses and start to pour your own.

“You like it so far? The ship, I mean, it’s pretty cramped and all but we’re halfway to unity already. It’ll be four days tomorrow morning and only around five more to go after that,” you say as you sit. She doesn’t answer as she sits still, watching her show. You take the bottle and begin to pour her glass as you turn away from her.

“I don’t like small talk,” she says dryly as you pour her glass. You pause for a moment to look back at her and she just eyes you before looking back to the glass. As you finish pouring her glass, she takes it and downs it the same. “BioTyk,” she says blankly as she sets down the glass, “I don’t know if I am.”

She doesn’t like small talk, you think, that’s one for the books, she likes candy, watching shows, and drinkin harder than me but she doesn’t like small talk. Sounds a whole lot like some people I know back in Haven. You sigh as you down your own drink. Third shot, probably should stop. “You don’t think you’re a part of BioTyk then?”

“No, I said I’m not sure if I am,” she says without looking as she places the empty glass on the desk.

“Holliday, huh?” You say as place the glass back onto the desk, the smell and the burn had already stopped affecting you. She turns back to the softly glowing screen. She seems almost ethereal even in your clothes, though that might be the vodka sneaking its way into your thoughts. Both of them are undoubtedly beautiful it’s just not something you really thought about, even if that’s probably the only reason you really decided to help them. You shake your head before start to speak again, “What do you mean it’s the last thing you remember?”

“It’s the last thing I remember before waking up again,” she says nonchalantly in the same rhythm and without a skip in beat as before.

“Before you woke up in that ship?” you ask with knowing the answer.

“Yes,” she says before turning to you with a tilted head. You pause as you look at her and she you. A moment passes, maybe more.

“Are you.. Okay?” you ask to break the silence, she straightens her self as she sits up. Her short white hair moves ever so slightly with the cold blowing air of the vents.

“I’m fine,” she answers after a pause.

“Do you know why you remember the name Holliday?”

“Someone told me,” she replies as she turns back away to pause the show. “I don’t remember much after that except for waking back up.”

“Do you remember who?” you ask as she sits still staring at the screen.

“No,” she replies softly. You pause as you turn to look at the black screen that simply says ‘paused ||’ in white. A moment passes as you listen to the vents slowly push air through the metal slits. The ship itself makes noise, a slow quiet and continuous rumble and the occasional moan of metal being stressed.

“Did they say anything else, like what is waiting at Holliday for you or anything else about Holliday?”

“No.”

“So you just remember the name?”

“Yes,” she says before turning back to you.

“BioTyk?”

“I don’t think so.”

“What if it was?”

“I don’t know,” she says blankly before looking past you, “I’m tired, I should be going to sleep.”

“I should too..”

>”But I’m going to stay up a bit tonight. Going to do some more reading,” You’re tired and read all day but might as well keep reading.
>”I’m going to sleep too then.” It’s been a long day of thinking about Coraline. Let’s hope you don’t dream about her too.
>”I’m thinking about staying up though, got some thinking to do.” Should probably prepare on what to do next since you’re getting closer and closer each day. Only fifteen or sixteen more days in this place before it’s time to get started on the whole thing.

Time to mull over life in bed while staring at the low ceiling? yeah. Also, poor Coraline is very streesed yet she doesn't show. Her stoic-ism melts ma heart

“See you in the morning then,” you say before climbing into your own bed. Coraline turns off the desk’s computer and reaches behind and into the cockpit to turn off the lights before making her way to where she’s been sleeping for the past few days. The lights dim down as watch her wrap herself up the the padding and blankets.

It’s quiet, the only sound you hear is the drip of the shower, the air blowing from the vents, and the ship as it makes its cuts black like a knife. You cross your arms behind your head as you lay awake, eyes fixated directly above you as if trying to see through the ceiling. The sound of light breathing and quiet dreams echo steadily as you drift into thought.

You’ve learned a lot since you dusted off Haven. There’s a lot out past just the blue skies and quiet morning sunrise. There’s a lot out here that you could barely know of. The opportunities, the people, the time and you’re about to get your share of trouble no doubt. There won’t be a taking a moment's rest once you make landfall in Leo, no turning back, no second guessing yourself. Adam got himself into something you’re not sure even he could talk himself out. This Matthew Wright and all the things going wrong down in Leo.

This isn’t some kind of place you can just walk in without a plan, not like you’re used to. Jumping out into one of those fancy dinner parties and everyone is wearing a mask, though you don’t have to take them off to see what’s underneath -- they’re all snakes. Snakes in sheep's clothing. Matthew Wright, a name, maybe he knows something that goes down under his belt, maybe he doesn’t since it is a big place after all. Trying to manage everything would wear you out and a place like that would sure have a lot of hallways without cameras. Stuff goes missing in bureaucracy all the time, stuff goes wrong on ships all the time, things just don’t just all add up to the same answer though.

Genetic augmentation, Arcady is just playing God at this point. Would be naive to think that corruption would be the exception instead of the rule. There’s not much to go off of though. Naomi seems to know a lot but it’s scattered, it’s here and there with too much in between knowledge lost. Names are important but names are easy to come by and with you knowing at least two names, you’ll be able to make it, or at least you think. Maybe Adam knew this would happen, maybe he didn’t, either way you’re involved.
>>
>>2836007
You’re not too deep to get back out though but it’s not like you want out. You want answers, you’re here for answers. Maybe you could get a job as a cook or as a clerk for one of the shops on station over in Leo. Maybe you could use your cert to get into work for one of the bays or maybe a job on planet. There’s options, though you might want to get one that’s flexible like one that works with Naomi’s schedule since you want to follow her around in her investigation, if you want to call it that. Doubt Naomi could do real investigation work with how she acts.

You blink at the dim light of the shower as it glows softly, illuminating Coraline in her blanket wrap. It’s funny, you never expected things to go so wrong yet so.. right. You’re not sure what to think, not really. Not at a time like this, and not in a place like this. You close your eyes as the sound of the ship lulls you into the safety of your dreams. Put under a spell as the world tugs at you to follow the different strings though only one is red.

You’re not sure what time you finally fell asleep, drinking tends to make you think a lot or at least a lot more than you do normally. A voice calls your name as you hear a noise, sounds like a song but more repetitive and softer. “Sam,” it repeats.

“Sam,” you feel a and push against your shoulder before something starts to tap on your head. “Sam.. get up.”

“Whaaat,” you groan.

“The console, there’s something blinking and it started to make a noise,” what you could tell was Naomi talking to you. “It says something about a ship.”

>Get up and check it, time to wake up anyways.
>Ignore it. It’s probably just some random notification about whatever. It doesn’t matter and you’re too tired to care.
>”What does it say, Naomi? Is there something about a uhh, ship, there should be something there. On the bottom of the screen, you know, what does it say?”

“A what?” you say as you take a hand and rub it against your face.

“A ship,” Naomi replies.

“A what?” you say again as you blink to adjust to the light. “A ship? What do you mean?”

“I don’t know, it’s your ship,” Naomi says as she points over to the console. It looks as if she just woke up, her hair’s a mess and yours probably is too. You run your hand through your hair as you slowly get out of bed. The console seems to be giving off a dim red light as it makes a soft repetitive beep. You blink slowly as you make your way around Naomi and into the cockpit, still padded from her blankets.

Looking over to the screen you see it populated with a small diagram of a ship you’re not very familiar with. Seems like a distress beacon of some sort, though you’re not sure how you’re getting it. It says it’s about a days travel out but doesn’t seem to be really on any route you know of. This could be one a trap, it shows on the diagram that the engines are out on it and seems to be drifting. The diagram also shows several parts of the ship seem to have been vented out, might have been attacked.

It’s just a day’s trip off course and then a half day to get back on course. If you did make the adjustment to fly, you could possibly save some people. This isn’t really a well traveled route anyways so if they’ve been stuck out here adrift then they might be stuck out here for a long time if you don’t do anything. It blasting it’s distress beacon on all signals seem to be a pretty dumb choice though.

“It shows a distress beacon,” you call out behind you. “Seems like their engines got cut, probably been stuck out here for a while.”

“Ohh..” Naomi responds, “I’ve heard stories like these. A lone distress beacon would light up suddenly, it would show something would be wrong like it would be attacked or it would just be adrift. It would take the rescue ship a while to plot out and get out there and when the rescue crew shows up, the ship is just gone. Nothing out there just black sea like the rest. There’s been a few times I saw something about things going like that in memorials like this. We are pretty close to unity after all, and places like that sometimes thing just can’t move on.”

“A ghost signal?” you ask, “Can’t be serious, besides what if there’s people out there. Then again it might be a trap.”

“Your call.”

>”We’re going to check it out, even if it is just a ghost signal, it’s not a long way out of our trip anyways and we should help these guys out.”
>”We’re going. Might be the ship Coraline came from, don’t you want to find out a bit more?”

Just confirm that there's people there, and if there are, just tow it to our destination.
No exiting our ship, unless it's hooking up toe line, and definitely no entering their ship.

Sorry, it doesn't worth the trouble if it's a ghost signal that moves faster than light. Even if there is something salvageable, we don't have the manpower nor a sizeable ship for actually saving something/someone

The signal is already present in our path, we're receiving it by running into already present signal.

“Well I got this far with helping everyone I come by, might as well keep at it,” you say to yourself before turning back to Naomi, “Looks like we’re takin a bit of a detour if you don’t mind.”

“Might be something worth getting out there,” she replies. You take a hand and grab onto one of the levers and pull it backwards. The ship shudders violently as pressure and stress begins to push against the ship. Nothing but a few shakes before you see the speed drop down, slowing to an almost halt in the span of the next few hours. You check to see how long it would take before it finishes, almost three whole hours of it slowing down. Just like a train only going faster and probably deadlier. You’ll have to change courses once it finishes.

You’re wary of this whole thing still. You’ve heard stories of ships flying in the black on no real route. Lost ships adrift, maybe for centuries or longer, sifting through the sea. It could just be a ghost signal caught in a loop that you just happened to stumble across. The ship itself doesn’t seem to be that big, maybe a very small freighter like a small cargo hauler so it can’t be some century old junk craft drifting and just now appearing on some route.

Captains shouldn’t doubt their judgement on decisions like these, even if you’re just a pilot of some small thrust shuttle. You resign, already made the choice, it’s not like you can turn back now. In a days time, you’ll be at that ship. Hopefully not adrift like it too.

Checking over the diagram and blueprints it sent, it seems there is a cargo hold near the back end of it which still has atmos. Where as half the ship seems to have gone dark, it’s the only thing that has constant power. You plot the course on screen, marking the stopping point and the flight maneuver. You’ll have to burn a little fuel to start the turn but from there the generator will take it. As you finish the signal seems to burn out, like a candle. Strange. You complete the course regardless. Not a waste of time if there’s still something out there. Seems like there is something out there if the signal just cut since that probably means there’s someone on board.

Though why they would cut the signal, you’re not too sure. Your ship already caught wind of the data transmitted and saved all of it to the box. You probably just past the tail end of the signal anyways, like a wave it would only travel so far. You lean back into the chair and watch as the time ticks by.

“So?” Naomi breaks the silence, “what do you think?”
>>
>>2836372
“I think there’s someone out there,” you reply as you watch the time steadily tick, “Even if there isn’t, there’s something out there. Might as well give it a check. Doubt it’s anything like your ghost stories you read.”

“It’s your call after all, Sammy,” she says as she drops a nutri-bar into your lap. It is your call, something you should be sure about. You breathe before opening the thick wrapper and taking a bite into the powdery brown bar. You turn around to see Naomi sitting behind you and Coraline still asleep in her cocoon of blankets.

>Take a shower, exciting times yes, but hygiene is forever important.
>Look through the diagrams and blueprints sent over. Maybe you could find a path to the cargo. That’s probably where they, if anyone, would be at.
>”Naomi, got any idea on what is at Holliday?” Bring her into the discussion. Coraline is asleep anyways, and you still don’t know anything about Holliday. Naomi probably would be someone to know anyways.

“Thanks, for the bar by the way,” you say before taking a bite and swallowing. “Did you just wake up?”

“Yeah, no problem, and yeah. I woke up when the thing started to go off,” she replies, “Then I woke you up and, yeah.”

“Ah,” you say as you open the diagrams. Like you saw before, there seems to be a few things shredded. The wings clipped and a gash through the side that cuts through two floors. Most of everything in the crew quarters seemed to have been spaced along with a shuttle tied to it. The ship seems to have a forward facing bridge at the front, two decks, bottom deck seemed to be crew quarters with the back being mostly cargo and engines. Medbay seems fine and has a hallway attached to the cargo bay. You could go through the crew quarters since you’re pretty damn sure the airlocks are all mag-sealed. “Sleep well?”

The ship seems like a straight forward, two deck cargo ship. Six bunks for a crew including showers, medbay, and other sort. Seems pretty standard, probably a Bryant ship, maybe an older version and probably cheap though it’s odd since it doesn’t actually show any serial numbers or registration on it. Either it really is some ghost ship, or it’s actually some ship no one is supposed to find.

“Yeah, slept pretty well, you?” Naomi answers as you look through the blueprints and records the signal sent over. Current states are pretty common thing to send over during distress signals since it gives rescue crews some kind of gauge to see if it’s worth their time or not.

“I slept fine, though I stayed up a bit later than I should have. Come check this out, ship has no serial numbers,” you say waving Naomi over to peer at the screen as you point at it.

“What do you think? Secret service or really a ghost ship?” she says as she leans over your shoulder, close to your face.

“Might be some smuggler who’s been down on his luck the last couple of days. Probably just some moron who never got it registered. Either way, seems like it’s something odd. Ship itself seems pretty standard. I’m guessin Bryant Frontier since their ships look like this. Two big engines on each sides of the cargo. Pretty thick plating too, supposed to be rugged as all hell. Only thing that has power is the cargo though. The med, bridge and a shuttle it got tied to its side seems all black.”

“Shuttle?”

“Yeah, thing’s shredded though. There’s a big gash going from the left engine on up through some berths and up into the bridge. Pretty simple layout altogether though. Guys might have hit a rock or something but thing’s torn up all seven different kinds of hell. I think I can get in by passing through the scoring on it’s left since it’s all probably locked down with the whole thing bugged to hell. From there I could take the ladder up into the bridge and lock down what I know to be fu- uh, smudged.”
>>
>>2836591

“You know a lot about ships is what you’re really getting at,” she says with a short laugh, “So you’re saying there might be people in the cargo bay then since, like, what you said with the power and all?”

“Yeah, that’s what I’m guessin,” you say before taking another bite of your bar, “hmm..”

“What?” she asks as you make whatever noise.

“I was just thinking, something Coraline and I was talkin about. You uh, know about anything in Holliday?”

“Yeah, didn’t you say Coraline was wanting to head there?”

“Yeah?”

“Ah, well, that makes sense..” she pauses, “It’s one of the more recent systems, though a few hundred years give or take isn’t really recent so,” she pauses, “anyways, it’s supposed to be some kind of colony being subsidized by one of the companies. There’s a big research station overlooking the whole thing and from what I know.. It’s probably BioTyk.”

>”BioTyk?” Well, you guess that solves one answer but it only really just brings up several more.
>”What else can you tell me about Holliday? You said research, what kind of research and what kind of research does a company like BioTyk even do?”
>”You think Coraline’s connected to BioTyk now? She said Holliday was the last thing she remembers. If she isn’t connected I’m calling bullshit. She’s probably some super soldier or something, isn’t she?”
>”Jesus Christ, well whatever.” Change the subject, BioTyk is the least of your worries right now, “What about Leo? You said some big man Matt was the boss man over there. You got any other names you were thinking about looking into? Guys you think were a part of the missing girls, or Adam?”

“BioTyk,” you quietly repeat Naomi as you tap your chin with an index finger before jumping to the console once again, opening the systems chart.

“What?” she asks as you look through the charts. Holliday, named after the guy who found it like most newer systems. What little information you know seems to be the basics, four rock planets and a gas giant orbiting a red star. One of the systems in the periphery and is connected to Haven, New Arizona, Sawyer, and Stonewall.

“What all do you know about Holliday?” you say as you lean back from the console.

“Well, not that much honestly,” Naomi replies as she leans forward to point at Holliday on your screen. “You’re like right by it, shouldn’t you know more about it than me? I mean the only real reason why I know about Arcady is because of the investigation I’m running, BioTyk is a whole different thing.”

“Well I don’t really know anything about it other than what you said. Never been there myself.”

“Ah..” she says from above you, “Think it’s just a research station for BioTyk then. There’s a Colony there too, though I doubt it has a high population since it’s not that big of a system in the first place.”

“Alright, so research station, you know what they research in Holliday or what BioTyk even researches with the restrictions on all their augs?”

“Well nothing specific to Holliday, but BioTyk has been, from what I know, working with military for a long long time. Think it was even before cybernetics got the boot. They’re not really making a whole lot of income from selling cybernetics or at least on the wider scale since it’s starting to take a hit with Arcady and Python and those sorts of companies coming out with alternatives. BioTyk probably does a lot of military contract work.”

“So you’re saying Coraline’s probably some super soldier?” you say halfheartedly.

“No no, I doubt she’s even a part of it still. Holliday doesn’t even seem that important. If they did have military work it would probably be over in Oberon where they’ve been working with the military since the incident. if Coraline is connected, and really only if, she’s probably some management,” she says before leaning back and taking a bite from her Nutri-Bar.

>”Well, anyways, thanks. I’m going to go take a shower. Wake up Coraline and tell her about the plans.”

“Alright, well here, What can you tell me about Leo then?” you say as you watch the console tick down ever slowing the ship. Only a few more hours and you’ll be changing courses to meet the ship in question. One step at a time. “You said something about a big man named Matt or whatever, oh and hey can you hand me a can of Cal? You can get one too I think I have like six or eight left.”

“Yeah sure,” Naomi says before reaching back into the Cabinet before returning with two thin metal cans, “Here.”

“Oh thank you so much, usually drink these things in the morning,” you say as you take one and open it by the tab with a small click of metal and the sound of gas being released. Taking a moment before take a long sip. “So, uh, anyways, uhm, yeah the Matt guy. You’re investigating these guys right, so what do you know? I’m gunna be tagging along with you anyhow so might as well tell your partner about your plans.”

“Hmm,” she hesitates as she thinks while opening her can. “Well since you’re.. going to be following me around.. hmm, so, like, Leo kind of works like a normal office. You have a bunch of workers that do the simple stuff, load, unload, and then the managers who manage them, then the managers sit in a council to be managed by other managers and so on until you get the branch leader of each branch. Baker, Gibson, Young and Gray and they all work under Wright, right? So mainly the guys I’m looking at are where the three women were going to work at. All under Baker. Baker is the head of the splicer research so he had the most funding and also from what I can tell the most openings, honestly I looked into him and he’s kind of a creep. He used to work over in uh..”

She pauses as she takes a long sip from her can while holding up a single finger at you as a sort of ‘hold on a second’ before putting the can down away from her face. You yourself have been drinking occasionally through her break down of the management heads in Leo. “In Innsmouth -- I know a weird name. Apparently another pretty important research facility that worked on splicer research. He was liked so much as one of the big scientists there so he was moved closer to Arcady in Leo. Though I’m pretty sure he had more freedom in Innsmouth since I couldn’t find much on it or him while he was there. So anyway, Baker is one of the guys who probably personally oversaw a lot of it though I don’t think he was doing any of the hiring. Small time probably just scouts who did the hiring.”
>>
>>2836927
“A Weston Ryen did a lot of the hiring,” she continues, “he probably saw through with it. Each girl was sent an invitation through people he knew personally or had contact with. Each of the girls were supposed to go into some project under him. Ryen and Baker are friends from what I could tell. Ryen was a personal hire from Baker’s time over in Innsmouth.”

“So.. why are you even going to Leo in the first place if you already know this much?” you ask in between sips as she pauses again to drink herself.

“Well the deal is, I have no idea what they’re doing with the girls, where the girls went to, or what they needed with them. See Adam was a part of a team of joint-branch guys who would go around and help manage. Kind of like junior managers or something like that. This group was basically there to cover and smooth things over but I guess whatever Adam found got him, uh..”

“Got him killed, yeah. That’s what I was thinking, but why did you say he was probably a part of the whole thing?”

“Well Adam was a part of the group, and the group itself worked with each branch, including Baker’s. The group was to accept incoming hires and help integrate them, teach them things and that sort of stuff,” she clarifies, “Nothing personally against your friend Adam, but the group, you know?”

You pause as you think over what she said between the sips of your can. A moment passes as the two of you remain silent. Arcady seems like a problem you’re not sure you can handle. Adam tried to handle it by himself, Adam tried to keep it a secret, and Adam’s dead for all the good that did. “You know it really does amaze me,” you begin to speak idly, “you’re like a-uh.. a uh, walking talking encyclopedia. You know a lot about this whole thing.”

“I only know what I know, you know?” she answers after a moment of silence.

“Yeah, like, how long did it take you to learn all this stuff? I mean it had to have been months or weeks at the very damn least,” you say without looking behind you, your eyes still looking over the screens.

“Yeah, that’s pretty much it. Arcady has been a thing I’ve been meaning to look into since the whole, you know, anyways..”

“I don’t mean to sound ungrateful or anything, you’re a huge help,” you say before pausing to take a sip, “Hell I probably wouldn’t know a single thing if I just ran into it myself. I got no real clue in what to do, really.”

“Yeah, no problem,” she says, “It, quite literally, is my job you know.”

“Ahh.. yeah I just feel like we really just talk about all this, you know.. uhh.. stuff. It’s just a whole lot of stuff. We never really just talk.”

“Like about family?”

“I don’t know, just.. talk I guess.“

“Pffft..” she laughs, “okay?”

“I don’t know what I’m saying honestly.. I just woke up. This turn of, uh, con-ver-sa-tion is just too meta,” you say before shaking your head, “Talking about talking? We’re only like four days into the flight and we’re already talking about talking.”

“Meta?”

“Yeeaaahh,” you drag the word before pausing. “it’s just weird. To really just talk about talking. But you get me right? Never really had a real conversation.”

“I mean.. I guess but we did talk a lot about family and.. do you mean just small talk kind of stuff?”

“Oh I don’t know. I made a big decision and it’s only been like twenty minutes since I woke up, barely even started to drink my Cal,” you want to avoid most of the conversation, Arcady and BioTyk, as a whole -- at least for now. This ship, stranded and adrift, should be your concern if you’re going to get into the business of helping people. You’re no tow boat and you’re definitely not a one man rescue crew. The thing’s sitting out in the black with no known routes and no serial numbers to boot.

“Well yeah family would be a part of it,” you say as you turn around, “Family and friends would be a part of it I guess but that’s kind of, I don’t know, personal. Here uh, let me out,” you say as to start to move around Naomi as you try to get out of the cockpit. You place your half empty can onto the desk as you make your way over. Naomi climbs into your bed as you get out and make your way to the locker. “Thanks, anyways maybe not really friends since I left them to come out here. Tim, Mike-Mike, Richard.. Anyways I have a funny story about those guys but,” you pause as you open the locker carefully to not disturb Coraline, ”Here, let’s start with something easy, Film, movies, shows, anything you like to watch? Or maybe uh, food, what its your favorite food?”

You turn away as you look into the locker, unhooking the clamps on your EVA suit. “Well.. Movies, movies.. Oh Ruby is probably my favorite. And for food it’s probably going to be a hot pot,” Naomi answers.

“Ah.. Ruby? Haven't heard-a that one before. Sounds artsy, is it artsy?”

“Kind, not but not really. It’s kind of a horror or slasher flick that turns into something pretty uhm, weird at the end. It’s really good, probably a classic at this point,” she says as you take the helmet off of the suit and look into it. “What about you? You have any favorite movies?”

“Movies? No not really,” you say idly as you inspect the helmet. “I don’t really watch a lot of movies though there is probably that one about uh.. I don’t know. I watch a lot more shows than movies so I don’t really know why I asked.”

“Alright, what shows do you like to watch?”

“Well, Bloodhounds of course,” you answer without hesitation. The helmet itself looks fine. No scoring on the sides or any real damage other than some of the wear of time, on the whole everything seems perfect. The seals are all there and look as sturdy as a new one. “But uhh, besides that there’s Deniable, and Company. Both really good shows. D.A. is about a group called fall guys and they’re basically mercenaries, same with Company but that’s a different show all together.”

“Ah, you like to watch the action type kind of shows? Have you seen Warlord?”

“Warlord? No, not really. Think I heard of it, that’s the one about barbarians and uh.. Magic and stuff?” you say as you put the helmet back and open the suit itself. As far as you know the enviro-suit that goes under seems to be spot clean but the suit has some red dirt and other debris on it though from eyeing it, you don’t see anything that looks like a puncture or any kind of actual damage to the suit either. You gotta say your dad did a pretty good job in taking care of the suit. “So what about.. Food. You said hot pot was your favorite? I gotta say.. Steak. Steak is great with pretty much everything. Uhh.. what about.. Drinks? You like Cal?”
>>
>>2838144
“Cal.. not that much really only drink it every now and then,” she answers as she puts down her can, “Usually can’t stand it without any creamer, but that flavor isn’t that bad.. It’s uhh..”

“Vanilla, yeah, something something pumpkins too. You probably got the last one of those though. They’re too sweet for me honestly and I accidentally bought a couple of them before I left home. Usually keep it simple, black, no creamer maybe some sugar to keep it less bitter but other than that… and you said you like creamer? God, that’s so.. I don’t know, inner city.”

“Inner city?”

“Yeah, uppity or whatever,” you say half way into the locker as you find where ever the girls put your tool box at. “Damnit where’d you two move the tools?”

“Bottom right, and what’s that supposed to mean? ‘Uppity’ and ‘inner city’.”

“Well, just seem like you’d never really make it out on a colony.”

“Why would I want to go out in a colony? What you think I’m a criminal just like you?”

“Haha, very funny,” you say as you find the red labeled box, “Not really an insult, you know.”

“Alright, alright, well what does a colonist like you do hmm?”

“Well usually actual work on a field, or workin keeping things together rather than having everything shipped and sailed to you.”

“Oh you’re implying I couldn’t handle myself?”

“Well, yeah. Why, what do you do? For like, I don’t know, fun?” you ask as you pull the box out and place it to your left. Opening it you find a screwdriver, spanner, a plasma torch, a laser cutter, pliers, several different standard-sized wrenches, some extra bolts screws and ties along with other miscellaneous items.

“For fun? An inner city girl like me?” she says exaggerating her words, “Well other than writing, going to the movies, and cooking, I’d probably go to the arcade or maybe a cafe with some friends.”

“Arcade?”

“Yeah, you know a place with games and stuff?”

“No I mean, you play games?”

“Yeah, of course, why do you?”

“No not really, never had the time,” you answer before closing the toolbox. Most you can do is spot weld some places or cut into a door though you’re definitely not getting past an airlock with your cheap cutter. Things are expensive for the most part and run off of some tech the imps thought up.

>”What about sports? You watch any sports?” keep the conversation going.
>”Video games huh? What’s your favorite?” You don’t really know much games since you usually kept yourself busy between work on the ship, school work, house work, and well actual work.
>”So you like to do pretty much everything an inner city person would like to do. I told you that you’d probably not make it out in a colony.”

You lean back as you push the toolbox away and onto the desk. Naomi sits in front of the cockpit and the screen from the desk. You lay out the tools one by one as you inspect them. “So, any good video games?”

She laughs for a moment before you turn to her and frown and she stifles her laughter with a hand, “You just sound like an old guy with the whole ‘you play any of them fancy games there,’ and it’s just..” she laughs again before shaking her head and breathing for a moment, “Yeah.. yeah there’s some good games out there.”

“Ha ha, yeah.. Tell me about them, what kind of games do you like to play?”

“Well usually just like simulators and all, really kind just those building kind of games,” she answers as she stops laughing. “What about you, you said you didn’t have anytime? You do anything else other than be a cheapskate and talk about spaceships?”

“Ah. Yeah, well I never played much games, mainly just didn’t have any time like I said. Between work on the ship, school work, house work, and well actual work, I just never really found the time or want to really just play a game. But.. other than spaceships and being uh,” you look to her, “being a cheapskate, I liked watching races every now and them. That one guy, Sean, probably the best pilot from this side-a Sol. Decent fella too.”

“Racing?” she says somewhat patronizingly and with a sardonic smile. “..Really?”

“Well what about you? What sports do you watch?”

“I don’t really like sports, though sometimes go to a ball game with some friends if I wasn’t busy.”

“Busy with what? Drinking creamer filled cal and playing games?”

“Busy with work, I have a job too, you know.”

“Ah yeah, sure..” you say as you look over the tools. Most of them seem fine though you remember the dent on the side of you cutter you got from dropping it against the concrete out in the shed while you were messing with the ship. Almost cut off a finger with that smart move too. For the torch, other than new paint, it works fine though you’re not going to really be using it to seal shut any real tonnage since it’s not the best thing out there. The rest of the tools are fine since you usually try to keep care of them since they’re pretty much your lifeline in most cases. “What kind of work, other than writing?”

“Well..”

“Exactly,” you say cutting her off as you turn back to her pointing a spanner at her.
>>
>>2838406
“That’s not really fair, there Sammy. It’s not like I’m you. My family wasn’t the one put in a colony for doing whatever. And to answer you I did work in a few stores. Mainly service,” she answers proudly with her hands on her hips and a faux pout.

“Ha,” you laugh as you turn away from her, “Reeaaally..”

“Yeah!”

“For how long?”

“Well..” she mumbles as her shoulders drop, “Two months..”

“Ha!” you laugh again as you take a moment to put away the tools you used to basically build this ship. You had brought some extra oxygen and atmos for your generators but you might have to use it with your suit. There’s enough to last a week in each tank but they’re pretty heavy though that won’t really matter in space. You check the time on your mobile as you take it out. [11:47]

You take a moment to place the tools of your trade back into the box before closing it and moving it to the back of the desk. Noticing the ship had stopped the soft rumbling, you turn to the console again. “So, Naomi what’s uhh..”

“What’s my favorite color?” she finishes for you.

“Nah, that’s a bit too basic of a question. Maybe, what got you into the job?” you say as you slide into the cockpit. The console glows dully as you light it up. You check the time on the flight path, only a few more minutes until it’s ready to start turning.

“Well, I thought I told you?”

“You did? I don’t remember,” you answer without looking back.

“Uhm.. alright, so I started writing because of my sisters. It was just a small blog until there was a case that really got me interested into criminal investigative journalism. I just kind of started one day, really.”

“Seems a bit odd, a city girl like you being interested in that kind of stuff,” you mumble offhandedly as you watch the route pick up and change courses. You take the controls from here and eye the route as you turn the auxiliary engines on. You feel the ship move from the small exertion of force from the engines as they kick up and flare into a burn. Taking the controls, you spin the ship to face true toward the stray ship. In a single stride you turn the ship forward and re-engage the missive drive as you drift slowly. A moment passes as you feel the ship kick back hard from the inertia before jumping into faster than light territory. Turning back you see Coraline had fallen over but remained asleep and Naomi holding tightly onto the side of the bed. You smile sheepishly as you start to speak again, “Sorry about the slight turbulence, uhh, should even out now.”

“You gotta be kidding..” Naomi says wide-eyed and with scowl. “Could have at least given a warning, Sammy.”

“Ehh..” you say as you look back to the screen with the stray ship scans. Still no real identifiers on them and from what you could tell a mean looking bit of damage that smashed through two decks of the ship. The left engine seemed all but clipped and the right engine is less than operational. They could have ran into a stray rock or worse, been sacked by some pirates. The top floor has the bridge and access to the two docking ports along with crane controls for the cargo bay and two larger sleeping quarters that lead into a dining room in the center.
>>
>>2838806
The left port is occupied by a shuttle that looks like scrap at this point and the right seems fine. The ship itself has six crew quarters (two of them being larger ones), a medbay, a bridge, dining room, two ports, two engine rooms, and a big open cargo bay. The left side, from engine to dining room, are all shredded and probably a safe bet as an entrance for you. You could also just hook up on the right port but you’re pretty damn sure there’s no power on the ship other than the power to the cargo bay that seems almost like it has its own generator.

Honestly, you’re surprised the cargo bay is even in one piece since from what you can tell it looks like whatever hit it only marginally missed it. There’s a chance you could get into the bridge if you wanted to but there’s a big heavy bulkhead between the bridge and the dining room so you’re not sure on that bet. If you could get into it you might be able to get the black box and see what all happened on the flight. You’re guessing most of the crew and what not are all in the cargo bay since that’s where all the power is heading to.

You lean back in the chair and stretch your arms in front of you as you turn back around to see Coraline awake but still wrapped up in her blankets sideways.

“Hey uhh,” you say as Coraline watches you from her blankets, “Coraline, sorry about the, uh, turbulence.”

“Ah,” Coraline says before righting herself up and breaking apart her wrap in doing so. “Why?”

“Change of plans,” you reply as you get out of the cockpit. The Console glows dully as you turn back to look over the screens and blueprints. “There’s a ship not too far off of our course and apparently its wings got clipped some how. We’re going to check it out, probably won’t be that long Naomi th--”

“Don’t,” Coraline says calmly as she takes the blankets off of her. Slowly, she folds the blankets and places them on the bed as she ignores both yours and Naomi’s looks.

“Don’t?” Naomi says as she pops her head out of your bed. You’re wearing the same face of confusion as she looks back to you. Coraline probably knows something you don’t. Maybe you should have asked her as well. Maybe you shouldn’t it is your ship after all.

“Don’t,” Coraline repeats. She stares at you for a moment before making her way to the cabinet and taking out a Nutri-Bar. She doesn’t seemed that concerned but this is the first time she told you no. Maybe she’s connected somehow, maybe this was the ship she came from, the one she woke up in.

“What- uh..” you ask as you watch Coraline unwrap the bar and take a small bite. “What do you mean ‘don’t’?”

“I mean don’t go,” Coraline says as she turns back to you. Her eyes focus on your face with the same look of ice as before. You’re not sure what she would be concerned about or why she wouldn’t want to go. She stares at you for a moment as she sets down the bar. “The ship, don’t go to the ship.”

“Wh- why?” you ask.

“Just,” she says before closing her eyes and turning away, “don’t.”

>”What do you mean, ‘Just Don’t’, Coraline, do you know something about this ship?” Of course she knows something. This has to be the same ship that she came from.

“What do you mean? Just don’t? Coraline,” You say getting her attention as you get up from the cockpit. Placing a hand on the edge of the joke of a hallway, you push yourself up and climb out of the cockpit. Coraline probably knows something, maybe she’s hiding something, maybe she’s not. “We’re going to that ship, I already changed course and we’ll be there by tomorrow.”

“But..” Coraline trails off.

“No, we’re going unless you have something to add? What do you mean just don’t? Do you know something about this ship?” You say as you find a seat to her left with Naomi still behind you laying on your bed. Coraline just stares at you for a second, she’s not one to be shy so whatever she’s worried about or whatever she knows is something important or at least important to her.

She sits still, watching you with her cold eyes. Silence falls as you two watch each other. The vent starts to purr as the dry air starts to blow through lightly making its way through the cabin. She turns away and resumes her meal without a word.

“Well?” you ask trying to coax her into talking again.

“Well what?” she asks after another bite.

“Why don’t you want us to go to the ship? Do you know something about it, Coraline?”

“I know we should avoid it,” she says about a moment of pause.

“If there’s people on there then I’m going to check it out, we can’t just leave people out there like that. The only part of the ship that even has power is the car--”

“The cargo bay,” she finishes for you. “The med bay too.”

“How do you know that?”

“It’s the ship I woke up in,” she answers in the same way she always does. The same ship. Those words echo as she sits still, watching your reaction. You had thought it might have been her ship. She did say that it was in between Milo and Unity. Explains why those terrorists were able to intercept her ship, maybe it was adrift when they found it unless they were the ones to have opened the thing. It’s a hell of a lot smaller that you would have expected for a sleeper ship, probably why only the cargo bay has any power in it.

It’s odd that you didn’t really think of it when you saw it. That definitely proves there’s still people on that ship -- the nine other’s she’s the fourth of. Maybe this white haired girl’s veil of mystery is being lifted. Whatever she’s a part of or whatever she doesn’t know, that ship has some answer to any one of your questions.
>>
>>2839582
She stays silent as she turns back away to her morning meal. She probably doesn’t remember anything new and you doubt she’s really capable of lying, well at least not being any good at it. It makes sense, in a way. But.. “Why don’t you want to go back? What about the others?”

“What about the others?” your words hand in silence as awkward shuffling of weight and blankets make the only audible noise unless you count the vents and soft rumbling of the drive. You sit quietly as Coraline continues to eat her meal. “Look, uhm..” you pause and sigh as you try to get Coraline’s attention, “Coraline, I know you ain’t much for conversation but I have myself a feeling that this might be important. It’s my estimation that those folk you were talking about earlier might still be stuck on that boat there. In any chance this is an opportunity to understand a little more than what we do now, bout you and that ship of yours. You said this is the ship you came from and since we’re here we might as well stop on by and take a look on what had happened.”

Coraline remains still, placing the food down but keeping her eyes locked forward. She might know something else but it’s not going to help if she doesn’t say anything. Naomi, on the other hand, seems absolutely enthralled with everything that’s happening and you can only guess how many questions or answers are going through her mind.

It’s not like Coraline talked much before but her being quiet concerns you more now than ever. If there’s something on that ship you’re heading for you’d like to know before you get there so you won’t be stepping in blind. That ship holds something, some secret or something else, that is important enough for Coraline to want to keep quiet about. Could be that she wants to protect it or stay as far away from it as possible, though her telling you that she’s fine travelling to Leo instead of Iota Persei for her medicine doesn’t really add up. Maybe she just forgot.

“Coraline, I’m not asking you to tell me anything you don’t want to. I just would like to know what I’m about to get myself into before I start to jump. If there’s something dangerous on that ship I’d like to know what it is so I can avoid getting into that sort of trouble.”

“Then don’t go.”

“Not an option I’m afraid. We already made the course correction and I’m not keen on burning more fuel that I don’t have to.”

“Then you shouldn’t have changed it.”

“Too late to start that sort of talk anyhow,” you pause, “Now, tell me what you know about that ship, why shouldn’t we go? Is there something out there that we should avoid.. Or?”

“It’s dangerous.”

“It’s dangerous?” you repeat after her, “What’s dangerous?”

“Going,” she says simply as she turns back to face you.

>”What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
>”Alright, well we are going so it’s not like we can just not go. Don’t you want to know what happened?”
>Take a moment and see if she has anything else to say, she’s cryptic but she’s usually more direct with what she has to say.

I apologize for last weekend and for me not making right on my word for running on Tuesday. Thing is, this whole week went pear-shaped with the deal on school loans and what have you. It’s been hectic past few days so I wasn’t able to run Tuesday. Last weekend didn’t feel right either and, fair warning, this weekend’ll probably be a bit worse for wear too. I’m not going to be able to run Sunday and more likely than not, the updates’ll be pretty slow coming. I’m going to make sure none of this’ll make for the quest itself any worse in quality but it’s not going to be as fast or with as much meat as I’d like it.

Next week I will moving into new dorms and getting started on classes again around midweek. Thinking next weekend will fair a bit better than this one though. Sorry for the inconvenience, schedule should return to normal next weekend. Future weekends might turn for the worse as school starts to ramp up but I’ll save whining about that for when the time comes. Again, sorry for the inconvenience.

You sit still and lean back into the bed’s edge. Coraline doesn’t say anything without a purpose, she’s too blunt for any of that. Watching her, you keep quiet and hold your tongue. The air keeps still as she turns away from you and returns her attention back to her meal. Going is the problem, huh? you think to yourself. Coraline just doesn’t want you to go to the ship, even if it would help her out in the long run. What has her spooked so much she’s not even wanting to learn about the ship she came from. She might be worried those guys who attacked her are still there, or that there’s some kind of bigger picture you’re just not seeing -- some strings attached you can’t know or some greater mechanism at work that she thinks is going on.

Whatever the case is, she’s not going to say. She’s not entirely cryptic with everything she says since everything seems to be straightforward and almost entirely linear in thought or taken at face value. There’s other possibilities to why she’s obstinate with going but you’re not positive she knows what those other possibilities are.

“She’s right,” Naomi says breaking your thought after a moment passed. Coraline seems to ignore but you turn to give Naomi a confused look. “It’s dangerous to go. She did say there were others on the ship when she left and I’m beginning to think that there’s more to this than what we thought.”

“Sure there’s more to this than we thought but doesn’t that just make it more the reason to go? To, you know, get to understand what else is going on here?” you reply with a raised brow.

“Well, yeah, but like..” she trails off, “There might be more danger than just the guys she said she saw or attacked her. There might be any number of things out there, scavenger gangs are probably the biggest threat if you try to get on the ship since it’s close enough to unity that it’s probably already been found.”

“Yeah but you said those guys aren’t really a threat last time you said.”

“No.. I said they wouldn’t attack a ship just passing through,” she pauses, “They’re territorial and if one of them claimed something then they probably would shoot you if you tried to get on the ship.”

You think on what Naomi says before leaning in and covering the left side of your mouth, “How would Coraline know anything like that though?”

“She probably knows a lot and just having trouble remembering,” she whispers back.

“Yeah well I guess..”

>”Still doesn’t make much sense for someone like her to get worked up about.”
>”Doubt it matters if she wants to go or not, we’re still flying here anyways. We’ll be there by tomorrow morning.”
>”If you think vultures are going to be there, what do you think would happen if we did mosey on by? Should we actually follow through with what Coraline wants and change course?”

“Still. Doesn’t make much sense, not really..” you trail off as you lean back away from Naomi, “If we get wind of trouble we’re getting out, but till then I don’t think it’ll be right to just leave people drifting like that. Vultures or not, if they sent distress it means that someone’s out there at least.”

“Yeah well.. You’re still going then?” Naomi asks.

“I am, why, what do you think?” you pause, “Think it’s the right call?”

“I don’t know, maybe?” she shrugs, “I just don’t like the odds that a ship was stranded for over a week without someone noticing.”

“Yeah, I might be soft but I ain’t stupid. This whole mess is fishy and doesn’t make much sense but I’m not about to turn around since someone is in there drifting,” you pause before continuing, “First sign of trouble, I’m telling you, we’re out.. But till then it all just speculation and conjecture. Can’t know for sure less we go and look for ourselves.”

“Right..” she replies, “Sounds like it’s been decided then. I’m just wondering about a few things though. For one, there’s the whole thing about how it’s still there. It could be that you caught a ghost signal and they’re already gone, or, like, they’re still there and it’s a trap. It could also be that there’s something keeping it there like someone claimed it and haven’t moved it yet. I just feel like we’re missing a bigger picture here.”

“Can’t help but feel the same thing with how..” you look to Coraline, she still seems to be indifferent to the conversation. “In any case, we’ll be there by tomorrow morning. Whenever this carrion’s started to draw the vultures then we’ll make a break for it. Like I said, people are out there, can’t just leave them like that. Especially not now that I know that if we don’t go then there’s a good chance those who do eventually arrive wouldn’t be looking to rescue.”

“Yeah.. could just be that they’re already there..” Naomi trails off as she crawls out from the bed and sits between you and Coraline. You breathe deeply as you turn back to your thoughts as you check your phone. From what you can tell the conversation has all but died and everything seems to be decided. Might not have been if Coraline actually talked, you think. The time says it’s getting close to evening, spent an hour or two talking from what you could tell. Most of it feels like you’re getting nowhere, at least not sitting here stuck in your ship.
>>
>>2850960
You’re pretty sure most of this isn’t something you’re prepared for. Even if there’s people to rescue, you wouldn’t be able to do much with your ship being so crowded. If there’s people, salvage, or danger, you’re not sure you could handle either. Why you’re going is beyond you. Maybe hope, maybe something else, but you’re sure if you got there you could at least do something to help. Trying is better than doing nothing at all and you’d rather get into something stupid than let someone die out here -- whether they’re on your team or not. Still people.

You lean forward and open the cabinet, pulling out two bars and handing one to Naomi. Might as well eat since it’s getting late anyways. Odd thinking anything is getting late given it’s always dark regardless of the time. Time itself is weird thing to keep track of with everything going on, planets, stars, systems, all being different though time always remains the same in space. Coraline and her life is a mystery, who she is, what she is, what she thinks about. Nothing fits together.

Not like back home, everything had a place and purpose, everything worked together and everyone knew what they were to do to keep it that way. Not out here, out here runs on a different sort of logic -- one completely foreign to you. Keeping time is probably the only system worth taking note of out here in the black, everything else works differently, everything else takes different steps and works at different paces.

You’re worried to say the least, hell you’re thinking about time itself. This doesn’t seem right, doesn’t feel right. You’ve been out here only a few weeks and you’re probably as paranoid as a seasoned vet, probably worse since you don’t have their experience. No serials, no power, and drifting, this ship is about as good of good news as was finding out about Adam. This probably has to do with Arcady in some way and if BioTyk is involved it could be a hit or something on them. Though you’re not sure what position that puts Coraline in if any of that was true. She’s probably as worried about vultures as she’s worried about the next episode on her show. If anything you’re pretty sure she’s more worried about things a bit bigger than just some low ranking criminal.

Either way, it’s only just conjecture from here since she’s not going to say. The ship falls silent as you continue to eat your nutri-bar and think. If anything goes sideways you’re not sure how to get out or how to deal with any of it. Only thing that you’d have to defend yourself if it is a trap is your torch and cutter though both are hardly weapons and if you had hurt someone with it then it would be more than likely through an accident. You could make something, though you’re not sure where to start. It’s not like you could make a sword or anything since you hardly have the room or place to do it. Anything you could make would probably be more of a hindrance to you.

You make a mental list of things you have that could probably be made into something but if you did it’d probably be a bit difficult to make given your materials at hand. You have an extra tank of atmos, a few tools you could turn into something, a plasma torch, a laser cutter, though as you think of it you don’t have much to make into a weapon and even less you’d be willing to break down or turn into a weapon with.
>>
>>2851216
If you overcharge the laser cutter you could probably get something that would fire but at the cost of the cutter and if you had to actually cut anything with it you’d be out of luck given that overcharging the thing would more than likely fry it after so many times. You could also break down the plasma torch and turn it into something though if anything breaks down you wouldn’t have much in the way to welding anything together unless you got enough tape or glue or sheer luck. You could break apart some of the spanners and see about trying your hand at making something sharp out of them but the whole set was something you’ve kept since thirteen. Anything you use would more than likely be something you’re not really willing to part with.

Though, trying times call for desperate measures, even if you went into this willingly. You brought only a few extra parts like some tubing and fasteners, nothing you could really make a weapon out of. With pressured air and tubes you think you could make something resembling a weapon, though you’re more worried about how any of it would really work since making weapons isn’t really your specialty.

You sigh as you run your hand through your hair a few times. Most of this mess isn’t your fault and you’re pretty sure it isn’t Coraline’s or Naomi’s but you’re still getting stuck into it. This ship has something written all over it, you’re sure, but from this distance trying to make out anything would be impossible -- metaphorically that is. There’s as much chance of meeting a vulture in that place as there is meeting a friend and it doesn’t matter. You’re going and if you’re going you’d like something to hold out there to keep you safe.

oh my.. That's quite the knife.

>Three degrees of success, zero criticals.

0 - You fail to create a knife, the materials are completely wasted and if you want to try to make a new one you'll have to start over.
1 - You create a scrap knife with poor condition and improvised stat. (5/5/_) (1 damage)
2 - You create a shoddy knife with okay conditions and improvised stat. (7/7/_) (2 damage)
3 - You create a superior knife with great conditions. (10/7/_) (4 damage)

So let's talk about what those numbers mean. (10/7/_) was what the dice gods had decided to give you today.

(C/R/Q/)
C = Condition
R = Reliability
Q = Quality

Each stat works in a sort of way which requires you to keep the item maintained and functional out here in space. This is called the gear rating. More than likely you won't know exactly how everything works just by looking at it unless you're at least competent in the mastery which the item lies in. You can understand the gear rating of a certain piece of equipment through use of the item or through getting someone to inspect it.

Condition -

Condition is a stat that which an item or equipment can gain or lose. via repair or use. Condition is a temporary stat and can be fixed via repairing the equipment. Condition worsens over extended use and after a set number of rounds of use, condition may begin to break down. Condition decides what percentage of the item's dice is functional. From 0% to 100%.

Condition Dice Table

0% -50DC
10% -40DC
20% -30DC
30% -25DC
40% -20DC
50% -15DC
60% -15DC
70% -10DC
80% -5DC
90% -0DC
100% -0DC

Quality -

Quality is a stat which an item or equipment starts with via purchasing or through scavenging or "requisitioning" or other means of ataining the item. Quality refers to the initial make of the item itself and is a hard cap of how well it functions. The quality decides what percentage of the item's dice is functional. From 1 to 10 with the poorer the quality, the poorer the stats.

Quality Roll Table

Scrap 1-4 1d4
Shoddy 3-7 1d4
Standard 5-9 1d4
Superior 7-10 1d3
Masterwork 9-10 1d2

The first part is the general quality given, the next is the numerical value of each quality which is a range between a few numbers and the final is a the dice I roll to see which number is assigned to each item. This roll will be off-screen (discord) to not clutter the thread with random rolls.

Quality Dice Table

- 0 - (+15)
- 1 - (+10)
- 2 - (+5)
- 3 - (+5)
- 4 - (0)
- 5 - (0)
- 6 - (0)
- 7 - (-5)
- 8 - (-5)
- 9 - (-10)
- 10- (-15)
>>
>>2852320
And finally,

Reliability -

Reliability is a stat which governs how fast the condition degrades. The lower the reliability the faster the item degrades. This excludes one-use items, but is important with weapons like guns or items that require extended amount of use. Reliability is the stat that determines the amount of rounds/turns the item can be used in any given conflict before the condition deteriorates. Reliability and be affected by other forces by will eventually return to the same level of rating, its a "Semi-Hard Cap". Meaning, certain effects of outside forces can affect the reliability rating (usually negatively).

You run your hands through your hair after throwing your now empty wrapper into the bin under the desk. You exhale slowly as you lean backwards onto the bed. It’s not going to be too much longer from now that you’ll be stopping at that ship. Hopefully you’ll be in and out within an hour or less though you’re not sure what’s all waiting for you on the other side. It’s exciting but also makes you nervous as hell since it’s only been nearly two weeks and you’re already about to board some derelict ship drifting out into space.

You’re not sure how any of this will really work out given you’re going in without any real information other than the ship layout which is as simple as they come and really only provide simple details. Since it’s Coraline’s ship you’re not sure what that makes it but it looks a hell of a lot scarier since it doesn’t have any serials that sent through with it.

You could guess that it was an accident that blew the left wing but from what you could tell it looked all wrong. It could be an actual attack on the ship, like from pirates or from whatever you have out here but you’re not sure that sounds like a good thing. You know for a fact that someone found it before you and someone probably found out about it after them. Those sons or whatever were there for a fact, and so was Coraline. You’re guessing that whatever hit the ship spaced the crew with the atmos it had on it.

You really do wish you had a gun right now but it’s not like you know how to shoot one or even have the license to shoot one. You’re startled as Naomi takes you out of your thoughts as she moves around Coraline to reach the shower. You probably should have taken a shower since it is getting late and you hadn’t had the chance to even do basic human maintenance though that’s out of the question since you’re more worried about life and death situations right about now.

Taking a deep breath, you look toward the toolbox nestled in the corner of the desk. You have tools to help you get into the ship and probably get out but a weapon would go a long way. You’re not going to be breaking down anything that would help you more as a tool so the plasma torch and laser cutter is a bit out of question. Something else was to be the weapon, a tool less used and less likely to be a problem down the line. Taking the box and pulling it closer, you open it and start to take out some of the tools and set them down. Coraline, even though she had just woke up, ignores whatever you’re doing and crawls into your bed. Good thing too since you’re not sure if this whole making a weapon thing would take up a lot of space.

Laying out the tools, you pick out a wrench you hadn’t used in the past year, you’ll make a knife out of it. Checking your surroundings, Coraline is asleep and Naomi is still in the shower so if anything you might burn yourself since the desk and mostly everything else is metal and flame retardant. Taking out a pair of black looking goggles, you place them over your eyes before starting the torch and heating the sides of the wrench. Honestly you’ve only done this twice. You made a knife before but you’re not really sue you have all the right tools for it since you don’t even have grinders to make the blade as sharp as you would like it so you’ll have to do it more or less by hand. Using another wrench, you take hold of the on you’re going to make into a knife and start to heat the top half.

It takes very little time to actually heat to a glowing red before you place it onto the desk and grab one of your hammers and start to hit it. You have hear Naomi yelp as you start though you call back to reassure her that no, the ship is currently not being torn apart and that you’re just making a knife. She’s not convinced but you continue either way. Taking a few more strikes and reheats, the knife starts to take form from the wrench shape to a more knife shape.

After a few more times you notice the knife shape starts to form an edge and look more and more like a knife. Naomi appears to your right without you noticing as you work on the knife. Aside from making a solid dent into the side of the desk at one point, the knife is starting to come out nicely way better than you expected it to come out with your lack of actual tools like a whetstone, or a quench tank with oil or really anything that you used before. You sigh as you motion for Naomi to move around you so you can get to the shower.

Crawling your way into the shower, to place the unfinished knife into the sink and let it sit for a moment and cool off since the process of forming the knife is basically over. You take a breath before holding it out the knife itself looks pretty good from what you can tell. The entire thing seems to be nearly perfect which is surprising given you just made it on your desk. You don’t really have a belt grinder or anything like that though you have a laser cutter that could work if you’re careful. Leaning out of the shower you get the cutter from Naomi and turn it to a very low setting before moving it over the knife. As you guessed it worked almost exactly like a grinder only that it’s more dangerous and less loud.

(2/3)
>>
>>2852564
After a while of cutting the knife’s edge you hold it out. It’s fairly solid. Almost unbelievable you made it with the limited tools you actually have. Taking out your phone you check the time, it’s late. Later than you had thought it would be but it’s only six more hours until you drop out of light speed and reach the stranded ship.

→ It is now Night.

You take a moment to look over the blade with Naomi sitting in the shower doorway. You inspected it as you turn it around in your hands, probably one of the best things you made in a situation like this. “What do you think? Pretty solid, right?”

Naomi raises her brow at your question, maybe because she’s half asleep or she wasn’t paying attention but she takes a moment before answering, “Oh yeah, it’s uh, shiney for sure.”

“Maybe I should become a knife maker or smith or something like that?” you jest though Naomi seems barely awake. She seems pretty tired and you’re not even sure why she’s still awake. “You know, you could go to sleep if you wanted. Didn’t have to wait for me to finish.”

“Yeah I know,” she replies before blinking and looking back to you, “I’m uh..” she pauses, “Well.. you know I might just go do that then”

She gives a smile and nod before making her way over to her chair. You shake your head and laugh to yourself before climbing out and opening the locker. Placing the knife in the front breast pocket of your EVA suit, you grab a fresh set of clothes and throw them into the showers plastic hamper. You breathe deeply before closing the shower door behind you. It’s odd, you didn’t really expect to be getting into something like this -- not in a million years. A weird feeling of dread washes over you as you strip down, there’s someone out there and you’re sure of it.

If there wasn’t someone then there wouldn’t be a real need to go searching but there’s a chance of you not coming back. The back of your mind is screaming but being afraid isn’t going to help, not at all. You know this yet you can’t help but worry over everything else. One thing could go wrong and the whole thing slides downhill. Loose footing and you’re gone with nothing else there for you. It’s dangerous, not just space but what’s waiting out there too. But you know that even if it’s dangerous and deadly but you’re still going.

You take a towel and wash off the remaining water as it drips slowly off your body. You’re not a hero, you don’t look like one at least, but there’s no reason why you can’t try. You breathe deeply, calming yourself as you put your clothes together. As you climb out you see Coraline is still asleep on your bed. She’s something else and a reason why you’re going too. You’re not sure if it’s just bandits or she’s worried about something else. Maybe she’s worried about you, you laugh at yourself, now that’s a thought.

You poke Coraline in her shoulder to get her up before shaking her awake. She slowly turns around to stare at you for a moment before trying to get out and bumping her head on the ceiling of the bed. She rubs her head and then carefully makes her way out of your bed, taking her blankets and padding with her before curling up in the corner. She sure doesn’t seem worried with all the protesting she did today. Whatever it is it might just be something that’s not that important.

You sigh as you crawl into bed and promptly falling asleep. There’s no dreams for you tonight and as quickly as you fell asleep, you wake up to the sound of Naomi’s voice and her hands shaking you. It’s time. You swing out from your bed and make your way toward the console as you can feel the ship struggle it’s way to slow down. You’re dropping speed, fast, just like you had before to make the turn. The ship should be in view on your scanner now but you have about an hour before you get there and you’d rather not be there for any longer than you wouldn’t have to.

>Check the scans, maybe there’s something that you can pick up that you didn’t get from the distress beacon from before. Scanning can be tracked too so if there are pirates you’d be flagged as soon as you do.
>Try to get a signal out and hail the ship. You’re close enough to try to talk but them being able to talk back or even receive it is a different problem. Could make you a target if you’re not already.
>Go dark. Turn off everything that isn’t life support and flight correction. If it’s a trap then they probably haven’t spotted you yet. Though if you do go dark you're humped if they know you're here.
>Get ready right now, shower, food, and strap yourself with your tools and suit. Time to prepare is over anyways.

Sneek is the way to go. If they don't see us we can leave before anyone sees us. And we can investigate anonymously

would you guys want me to roll on this to decide for you guys? I think I'd rather you two to either decide together on something instead though since I don't want to choose something for you and it not working out for you. it's not like during conversations or anything since this has some sort of actual impact on how you can move on from here.

Also fuck me, looks like I'm going to a surprise wedding so I'll be back in like an hour or so.

A shudder and a stutter as the ship shakes stops you for a moment before you reach the cockpit and slide in. Most scanners aren’t tuned to search for anomalies and if you’re lucky that’s just what you’ll look like if whoever, or if there even is anyone, aren’t looking too close. And you know it’s a pretty simple thing to do -- you go dark.

Taking the helm, you start flipping switches, power, water, heat, gravity, all of it one by one trickles down leaving nothing but the air. It will take you an hour to reach the still drifting ship but with any luck you’ll only be a small dot, even smaller without power, on any scanner. From what the screen said the trajectory is perfectly head on so hopefully you’ll reach it just fine if you sit tight. Though that might be a bit of a problem given your starting to float away from the chair. In general everything else that wasn’t bolted down seems to have started to be a little freer.

Can’t leave the gravity running since that’s one of the easiest things to track right along the electrical output it gives. You learned that from working toward your certificate, something you’re pretty glad of knowing right about now since you’re pretty convinced that there’s a good chance it’s a trap. You take a moment as you turn around using the close walls to your advantage to see a floating Naomi inside where the bed is and a still wrapped up and levitating Coraline near the locker.

“Y- Yo- You should have at least wa- woah- wa- warned me before going and turn-ahh” Naomi struggles to keep her balance as she seems almost stuck inside the cubby, “turning off the gravity.”

“Oh yeah, sorry about that,” you say as you push yourself back into the chair. Gravity generators themselves are pretty useful things on a ship and the only way to have faster than light travel since it’s all one thing. Turning off the gravity also turns off the drive too and turning it back on takes a hot second before it’s able to start flying again. Though turning off gravity allows ships to do maneuvers they’re not able to do while running it same goes for having it on but in this case, turning it off means you’re harder to track. Not impossible to track if someone has the right equipment, just harder. Since you’re going dark it’ll be almost entirely visual from here on out unless you do a scan of the area but if you’re going to guess, if there is a trap, they wouldn’t be running hot either.

>Get your suit on and get ready for whatever’s out there. You’re running dark now so you should be safe to get dressed for the occasion in peace for now at least.
>Stay here and watch for any birds flying circles. Vultures are probably the biggest threat out in a place like this and you’re not one to be willing to see them start picking at you.
>Wake Coraline up, she can really sleep through anything but you want to keep her up since it might be useful to have her awake when dealing with the ship she came from.

Have Naomi look for the vultures, and wake Coraline up and then get ready.
It wouldn't do good to have a crew member be asleep if shit hits the fan.

“Naomi, get over here,” you say from over your shoulder.

“Wa-wait one second there sa-aahh,” she says as she starts to float uncontrollably out of the bed.

“Look quit fooling around and come here. There’s straps in the chair if you’re having that hard of a time,” you say although, admittedly, you a bit out of water with this weightlessness. Turning around in your chair you see Naomi slowly bump into the ceiling of the ship as she slowly makes her way from the bed to above the desk. Pushing yourself off from the chair, you grab ahold of Naomi and stop yourself with your legs against the walls. Taking her, you push her into the cockpit and set her down into the chair. “Look, all I’m asking is to keep an eye out for anything that’s moving. If you see something then tell me,” you take a moment and squint before seeing a black figure against the stars behind it, “you see that there?” you point, “That’s where we’re headed. That’s the ship drifting. See anything else moving out there and you hollar, you hear?”

She nods silently as you talk. You take the belt from the top of the chair and clip it around her waist before patting her head. Making your way from the chair and to the locker, you watch Coraline as she sits nearly still just above the deck. “Coraline, wake up.”

She doesn’t move until you tap her on the top of her head a few times. Slowly her head rises from the cocoon of blankets and padding to stare at you before you hear the sound of metal against metal as she suddenly drops to the deck. “What?”

“How-”

“Magnets.”

“Oh, well anyhow, we’re here. I’m going to get suited and you’re going to wake up. Help Naomi out in spotting anything out there. You’re ships just a few minutes away now and we’re headed straight for it.”

“Fine,” she answers quickly before pushing past you as you float fixed above the deck. You can’t tell if she’s in a bad mood or really any mood with how little she shows. Maybe it’s best that you don’t know what’s going on in her head, though it would probably put you at ease if you did. Can’t read minds though.

You open up the locker and take out the enviro undersuit and the EVA hardsuit along with the brown coat slung over the shoulders. Taking the suit and making your way into the shower, you strip down and prepare to get into the envirosuit. After a bit of struggle due to the lack of gravity, you manage to slip into the skin-tight undersuit that takes you by surprise that it almost feels like a rubbery gel and is oddly comfortable even if it grabs to a bit tighter than you’re used to. Next comes the EVA hardsuit which looks like baggy industrial clothes along with the dome helmet which you’ll put on before you step out. The whole process of getting the suit on is extended with the lack of gravity and the constant struggle with trying to not flail about.
>>
>>2854446
You sigh as you lock the last part of the suit on before turning to the door with your helmet in hand and your coat on. Looking to your wrist, you take your mobile display and lock it into the arm mount on your left. Patting yourself down with your thickly gloved hands, you take note of the knife still in the breast pocket. Checking the time, you know it’s almost time to get situated so you step out of the shower, “Anything?”

“Nothing,” Naomi replies as you push yourself out and make your way toward the toolbox sitting on the desk. Taking out the torch and cutter, you place the two onto your person before turning back to Naomi. “Well.. there is something..”

“Sounds goo- wait what? What is it?”

“A body.”

Good lord almighty. Sorry about this entire session. I’m not going to be able to run tomorrow like I had said and next week will be filled with college start up shit. Hopefully there will be no events during next weekend but I’m not going to hold my breath. Next weekend should return to the normal schedule.

Again, I apologize for this run. Next session I’ll start up a new thread, but for now

→ End of thread discussion.
>How are you enjoying the quest so far and what do you think about the characters introduced so far? Who do you think Coraline is? What about Naomi?

Ah shit, a bloated and dried body. I felt the scene almost comically as the trio is a young cast yet the tension is there
