“A triple battle?” Hana asks. “All three of us? Against the gym?”

“Who else?” Laki asks. “You won your last battle.”

Hana’s hesitation gives way to an upright, strong posture. “Yeah, yeah I did.”

“So now you don’t have an excuse to mess this up.” Laki jokes. But Hana’s confidence leaps away. “Hey, I was just joking. No pressure.”

“Yeah.” Hana says, trying to regain that confidence. She fakes it instead. “I know. I just hope you guys can keep up!”

Laki smiles and pats Hana on the upper back. Hana pats Laki on the butt in an awkward but playful gesture.

Belladonna runs up and smacks Gobble in the behind, a little hard. Gobble jumps and scrambles. He falls forward and only regains his balance after an embarrassing stumble. He looks embarrassed, but does nothing as Belladonna runs gleefully ahead without remorse.

Sorbet, who’s been watching, walks passed Gobble without a second glance. Mace helps him up. It’s only when Gobble notices Sorbet looking unimpressed that he becomes a little steamed at Belladonna.

We should buy Hana a Switch. It’d be nice since she hasn’t been pursuing that hobby, and it’s tradition for Pokémon protagonists to own the current Nintendo console. It’s good for camping too.

Also, Gobble i just read the bin. It was great, my favorite line was,

it so Hana that it hurts. It was good to see Herb's struggle remind Hana her own habits that may not be healthy as well. Some good character development all around.

Yeah, I think that Hana's experiences were super important for Herb to deal with his urges. I also sound it super funny when she discovered how vanilla Herb is because it strikes me that Herb didn't spend much time on fantasies before the story began. Herb was probably too busy keeping his family together to really become super introspective and learn about all his own desires and kinks and whatnot. I think whether Hana knows it or not she'll be a very good influence on Herb for dealing with a lot of his own issues.

She’s just being playful. You decide not to worry about every little thing like that. And Gobble only seemed to really care after Sorbet saw, not so much after it happened. You guess you’ll see if there are any effects over the long term. Gobble seems to get over it quickly as he walks alongside Mace. They’re good friends though, and good friends can do a lot to help when you’re hurt, but embarrassment in front of a crush is the type of thing that gets you late at night when you’re trying to sleep.

You miss Polu.

You put that aside. Keira, who’s been carrying Abigail up ahead, is slowing down considerably. When you get closer, you can see the sweat dripping off of her. It’s a pretty cool day, at least compared to the strong heat of the last few days, so you assume it’s due to carrying Abigail on her back.

“Are we still banished?” Abigail asks as you catch up.

Hana looks to you and Laki. Everybody is done talking about private stuff. “Doesn’t look like it.”

“Good. My Rapidash here is getting tired.” She continues to lean against Keira. When she pulls herself off Keira’s back a little, a bunch of paint on Keira’s back comes with it. Abigail’s top and legs are tie-dye “Are you just wearing body paint and no shirt?”

“Sometimes.” Keira gleefully replies. “It feels more free. Oh no! Your clothes!” She turns sad as soon as she sees the rainbow Abigail. “We can stop by the small market on the way and I’ll get you something new.”

“Eh. These clothes suck anyway. Not worth getting something new to replace” She says. “Can’t exactly complain about the free ride I got.” Abigail tries to walk under her own power. There’s a distinct stiffness and slowness to it.

“I’ll carry you.” Hana volunteers. “I-I don’t mind if my shirt gets a little paint on it. I can just buy a new one.”

“Must be nice.” Abigail mumbles under her breath. But she perks up. “Don’t worry about it. Come on. You three have a gym battle to lose. Let’s go!”

She’s tired, not hurt, so healing won’t have a huge impact. Still, you know your healing ability does put a bit of energy into people. Not much, but it gives them a little kick in their step.

“Let’s take a quick break.” You say. “Is there anywhere to wash up?”

“There are a bunch of freshwater ponds around this time of year.” Laki informs you. “We need to go down a little bit, but it’s not far. It’s been dry lately though, so we might just find puddles and tiny streams.”

“Downhill, then uphill again. More of that sounds awesome” Abigail quietly complains. You think she thinks she’s quieter than she is, because you heard that clear enough.

“We can have a large pokemon carry Abigail.” You suggest.

Gobble raises his hand to volunteer.

“Sorry, little guy. I’m not that short.” Abigail pats him on the head. “But thanks.”

“Tropius can do it!” Keira taps into her infinite reserves of energy.

The large Grass type pokemon is released from it’s ball, chipper and eager to be of service. It offers the fruit hanging. Keira takes one without hesitation and scratches it.

The group comes down the hills into lower ground, searching for large water sources. Laki was right about it being dry. You can see where the water was, but not sizable places where it still is.

Finally though, you find a shallow, if serviceable spot. Everyone has a chance to refill their water, wash up a bit, and take a well deserved break. You could just hang out here all day now that you’ve gotten comfortable. The time passes before you know it.

Mace perks up. He hears something. Something close!

“Danger?” You ask. All the girls and pokemon stop what they’re doing to pay attention.

He listens for another few seconds, then shakes his head.

“What is it?”

“Struggle.” Gardevoir says on Mace’s behalf. “Dryness.”

You and your group quickly grab the few items strewn about, and go to investigate. You all peer over the next hill and peak through the clearing. It looks like a very wide, very shallow pond full of writhing lumps. Wait, those are pokemon! An army of them!

“Tympole.” Laki comments. “It’s hatching season for them.”

The tiny pokemon are all only half-submerged in the water. They seem crowded. Not in any immediate danger, but it doesn’t look comfortable or ideal either.

“They’re drying out.” You diagnose. “We’ve got to do something.”

“I knew you were going to say that.” Laki puts a hand on your shoulder. “But hear me out.”

You, but also everyone else, listens intently. Keira looks like the only one who has a clue about what Laki is going to say. “Okay.”

“I also know people are going to think I’m evil for saying this. But if we are going to help them, we can’t make it easy. We have to be ready to leave some behind.”

“What?” Hana gasps.

“Harsh.” Abigail adds.

Keira listens quietly.

“There are loads of other Tympole that managed to get out into better bodies of water. They struggled, they pushed, and they made it. If you check out the next good freshwater source, I know you’ll find them. You always find them. And those tired Tympole sacrificed a lot of strength and effort to make it. These are the weaker or dumber ones, mostly. Some unlucky, sure. But if you just pick all these pokemon up, toss them into the next fresh water source, you are going to be taking a lot of resources from those Tympole that already made the journey by giving them all this competition. They’ll be at a hugely unfair advantage over the tired ones.” Laki sighs. “It’s not popular and it’s one of the reasons why we’re seen as some brutal, evil raiders with no compassion, but Akaneki kids learn about the Tympole from a young age and how good intentions can harm more than they help.”

“So, you’re saying leave them?” Abigail sits on the ground.

“No. My man made up his mind and I support him entirely. I don’t think it’s entirely a bad idea, but if it’s something we’re doing, we need to do smart, and we need to keep in mind that some of them aren’t going to want to, or be able to, work for it. And charity at the expense of the Tympole that struggled their way out isn’t right or helpful.”

“I...actually agree with Laki on this.” Abigail says.

“I’m going to do as much as I can.” Hana resolves. ”But keep that in mind.”

You get up, and head down to meet the Tympole.

“Hi, everybody.”

A radius of them react. Mostly by just looking at you. You hear a few high pitched noises, but most of their communication must be outside of your hearing range.

Considering Hana's ongoing desire to determine Herb's kink: should we consider using a strawpoll to determine some of his preferences? Gobble is rightly considerate of taking too much of Herb's characterization out of the player's hands; but this issue most prominently appears in lewdbins, where it's not feasible to stop partway and call a confirmatory vote. If we establish Herb's kinks (or potential kinks he might awaken to) outside of the context of an individual scene, it would take that burden off Gobble. Thoughts?

I'll go ahead and nominate the obvious: foodplay. I'm also pretty sure that if we were to nut in Hana's breakfast she'd melt.

“How about we use Rain Dance?” You say. “That would give them more water, make the ground around wet so journeying is easier, but it’s still on them.”

Laki mulls it over. “That makes sense. The ones that left before probably left after the last rain. That’s the smart thing to do, anyway. Alright. I approve.”

“How would the Conservation Branch handle this?” You ask Keira, making sure you’re not missing an obvious answer.

She thinks hard. “I don’t know exactly. But probably something like that.”

You have your pokemon use Rain Dance. Dice

“Where are their parents?” Hana asks.”

“That’s the other thing.” Laki says. “Keep an eye out. They don’t stick around all the time, but they do tend to check in or come back sometimes. It depends. Some spread to as many ponds as possible, others can’t get many ponds and are very protective of what they can manage to get.”

The rain comes down hard. Really hard. Your pokemon are in good shape and full of energy. It’s been a nice restful few days for them, so they’re eager to get something done.

You and the girls watch as the first few groups start to get moving. It’s not the majority at first, but more follow as the braver ones pave the way. Belladonna helps with Water Sport. She chases close to them to make sure they’re heavily watered as they set out. You think she just likes using a move, but also there’s a genuine joy in her face when she sees one that was struggling manage to get moving at a good pace.

“Good job, Belladonna.” You tell her. But right at that moment, a huge, bulky frog pokemon stomps in front of her. It looks angry.

Bella stumbles back. She gives it a rude gesture for stomping near her, then dismisses it and goes back to spraying down the Tympoles. You’re not sure which of them you should be worried about. Addressing Bella might take too long and the large pokemon might strike. Trying to talk with the large pokemon might do no good and put Belladonna in danger. Doesn’t she realize how huge and angry it is?

So, I’ve been thinking about Pokémon, since Hana, Herb, and Jerky Older Brother talked about Mandibuzzes and Marowaks.

Pokémon are like... a weird cross between aliens and pre-historic humans.

They’ve clearly got thoughts and feelings in a way that’s more like humans than like fish or beetles, even the ones that look like fish or beetles. And the human/Pokémon relationship isn’t the same as human/pet relationships.

But even though they’re people, they’re not human either. They don’t bond with their young as fast, they’re born more mentally mature and mature at much faster or slower rates.

Theoretically, if the world was a safer place for Pokémon in the wild, they wouldn’t have to protect their species by eating other Pokémon, or by having way more kids than can survive so that some of them are bound to make it to maturity.

I think that with careful environmental stewardship, ecosystems can go from a sort of warring-tribes state to a peaceful coexistence. Certainly, the humans of Loanah could have had lots of children and let them all compete with each other for food, but instead they carefully maintained a low population so that their kids could all have it good. Looking at the times Herb and co. have intervened with wild Pokémon, I think the same can be achieved for Pokémon. Herb can’t fix the whole world himself, but if he can do it to quarantine island, he can lead by example. Even if nobody else tries it, he’ll have made one corner of the world a better place for very real people.

I think the fundamental problem with your premise is you think there is some difference between humans and animals, so there is a similar difference between Pokemon and Humans. I would assert that humans are pokemon in much the same manner that humans are animals in our world.

In closing I find your assumption that pokemon are a cross between aliens and pre-historic humans because pokemon are just as capable as humans and in a number of ways more capable than humans. They fundamentally just see the world in a different way and don't place themselves superior to other animals the way that humans do.

“Bella, come back!” You should out.

She hesitates. Her gaze reluctantly goes back to the giant pokemon she just dismissed, and she looks unimpressed. Like she feels insulted he would even threaten her. But when she glances back to you, and Laki, she listens, leaping back in a graceful and battle-ready, but casual and completely unthreatened way.

Dice, who immediately came to your side when he noticed the new pokemon, pats her on the back. She hoses him down with Water Sport as a sort of dismissive gesture, but he just happily accepts it without reaction.

The large pokemon looks less upset now that there’s some distance.

“I guess we’ll get going, now.” You say. There are still some Tympole staying in the pond, but the pond has a lot more room and a bit more water, and like Laki said, some just won’t go. You silently wish them the best as you hitch up your backpack and turn to leave.

“Oh no.” You hear Hana say. When you look back again, you see Cubone standing right close to it, arguing.

Ironically, you'd be in a much better situation if Belladonna was there. But you had no way to predict that. You're glad she listened though, because if she hadn't she'd have learned the wrong lesson for sure.

“She’s insulting her motherly instinct because she left her young here.” Gardevoir translates. “I’m under the impression that translating the exact words is impolite.”

The huge pokemon raises an arm to attack.

Hana takes off, running towards Cubone. She probably won’t make it in time, but there's an outside chance

I think you dropped a word or words, so I’m not super sure what your closing statement was.

Even if my opening metaphor was muddy, my overall points were that:

-Pokémon should be able to live peaceful lives, since they’re people, even if they’re not human.

-Pokémon are capable of living peaceful lives where they aren’t killing each other over resources by managing resources, relationships between populations of different species, and not having massive clutches.

-Humans, such as Herb, can teach them how to do this.

“Cubone, Dodge! Mace, help boost Hana!”

Hana either doesn't have time to react or to Mace helping[73], or is too busy to comment. Together, they reach the huge frog pokemon well before it attacks.

“Oh I didn’t think this through.” Hana gulps as she comes face to face with the creature. [90] It’s attack still comes down towards Cubone, but Hana is enough of a distraction and it’s training with you before gave it enough of an edge that nothing connects. A huge wall of mud from the attack comes spraying over the freshly clean Abigail, though.

She just sits there and wipes the mud from her eyes. You can almost see the expression of annoyance under the thick layer of mud. You’re not sure if you’re imagining that or if you’ve just got a lot of experience deciphering Keira’s face.

“Hana, get back from there!’ Laki yells. She takes a step in a run, but stops herself and throws a pokeball instead. “Chatot, go!”

Hana finds her legs stuck in the mud as she sinks in. “How do I always forget about this?” She tries to move, but can’t dig them both out at the same time. She readies her metal arm to deflect anything coming, and Mace flies up in front to help cover her. She half-jokingly bemoans, despite the clear stress on her face.

Good, good Mace.

Cubone scrambles up from it’s dodge and ready’s it’s club. But it uses one hand to push on Hana’s sunken leg, as if to tell her to back away.

[I'm afraid that's it for tonight. I'm unsure about what exactly is going on at work Monday, but there's an outside chance of running Wednesday, and next Saturday and Sunday will be back-to-back, all weekend runs.

I've been really looking forward to being done this weird training schedule at my new job so I have a predictable shift. I have a lot of excitement for the gym battle and a few other things. I hope you guys don't mind things getting a little difficult in some areas in the next bit. Well, I say that but sometimes write-in plans surprise me and steamroll things so who knows! It's those surprises that make it so exciting!]

General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.
Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as circumstances warrant.

Combat mechanics involve three rolls of 1d100, taking the best, and using the base accuracy and crit ranges of the the PTU system, roughly, but the 'turn order' will be more like the anime, where sometimes you can do a few moves in a row or be hit by a combo of moves yourself, all depending on circumstances. Stronger moves tend to take more time and have more cooldown than weaker moves and also may leave you open to an interrupt, so beware of that timing. Speed is more important for closing ground, intercepting, and other things and doesn't necessarily mean going first.

Pokemon and trainers are unique, and may have certain specializations, skills, or other things that the video-game mechanics might not allow. Some examples: That kung fu Bellsprout in the anime, that crystal Onix, or a Roggenrolla that can fly. Herb's perception skills, pokemon knowledge, context clues in general, and other things will hopefully come into play to avoid completely unfair, unforeseeable bullshit, but expect more bullshit from more advanced trainers.

Call me out on a mistake and receive a suggestive picture, mostly likely a butt.

“Mace, Cubone, protect Hana. Try not to hurt it if you can, but keep Hana safe.” You direct them. You plan to reason with it if you can. “Keira, can Shedinja help too?”

She looks confused for a second, but you can see the understanding hit her through her expressive face and wide eyes. “Right! Shedinja, I-” another thought sweeps over her, being reflected in her face.

“Shedinja, help Hana.” Abigail directs. “Run interference. Be a distraction!”

Shedinja is confused for a moment, but flies off in that direction.

A heavy fist comes down towards Hana, but a Sand Attack from Mace gets in it’s eyes, throwing it off balance. Hana still holds her arm up to protect herself, not wanting to risk taking the opportunity to dig her heavy feet out of the mud quite yet. Cubone brandishes it’s well crafted, new club in one hand and runs up Hana’s back. It leaps into the air as if she’s ready strike, but it’s a bluff. As the large pokemon brings its arms up to defend itself, Cubone takes the opportunity to instead land on it and climb it’s back. But Cubone looks angry. As it tries to reach up to grab Cubone, Shedinja flies around it’s face as a distraction. Seismitoad tries to grab it but fails.

While this has been going on, you’ve been trying to get closer. You ran fast, but stopped short of getting too close to avoid being threatening. Groups of remaining Tympole scramble away from you, and hopefully to the next water source.

The huge Seismitoad sees you among her young, and even with a Cubone on it and Mace coming around fast, as well as Hana struggling to move her legs out of the mud, looks more concerned about that than anything else.

Gobble, Bella, and Dice surround you. Sorbet stays back. But you don’t think it’s a fear thing. She seems like she’s ready to fire some really cold stuff from that high spot a little back.

You glance back at the hill where the rest of the group is. Laki has Chatot flying up high scouting around, with her other pokemon around Keira and Abigail.

The Seismitoad bristles and growls. The low, deep sound seems to emanate from it’s entire body. It feels like it’s warming up something and making a threat at the same time. You feel pretty confident about Hana being safe from direct physical attacks at this point, but you know pokemon have other tricks besides just striking.

“Everyone stop!” You shout as you approach with your arms outstretched. You want to try to calm things down here. “We’re trying to help!” You yell to the Seismitoad. “Look around. Do we look like we’re here to hurt them? Why would we go to all this trouble if we were a threat to your young?”

The huge pokemon glances around, but looks a lot less interested in if you’re a threat to them or not than you would have guessed. Maybe it’s just hard to read it’s face. It still looks very annoyed at the Cubone on it’s back.

Cubone leaps off of it but holds the weapon steady, looking very threatening now and ready to act. Mace comes around and sets down in front of the pokemon and Hana too. He’s a lot closer to you than Cubone is, though.

“There’s no sunlight between this one and the young.” Gardevoir’s voice echoes in your head. You can see that everyone else heard it too.

“Wait, what?” Hana asks, freeing one leg from the mud. “This isn’t the mom?” She pulls the next one loose, but she’s stuck on her butt in the mud and will only be able to crawl unless she wants to sink in again.

You’ve put yourself very close to the massive pokemon. It begins to lumber closer, then growls. It lifts a small Tympole out of the little puddle it steps into, then sticks it’s head in the water. It comes up and gulps.

“Did it just eat something?” Hana asks.

“Bug larva, and other things.” Laki yells out, having heard that. She’s got great hearing.

“Wait, you’re here to bully the remaining Tympole out of what’s left of the food in this pond, aren’t you?” Hana asks.

Cubone looks angrier now. This isn't a mom come to protect its young. It’s a pokemon taking food from smaller, weaker pokemon. You doubt there’s much food left in the pond by now, and most of the Tympole have left, but some just can’t or won’t leave, and this thing looks big and strong enough to take whatever might be left.

It’s still very close, but it looks a lot less concerned about you. It lifts a small, weak looking Tympole and tosses it onto dry land while it dunks it’s head below for more bug larva. The weak Tympole struggles to right itself and get back to water, but doesn’t look in immediate danger. It’s succeeding in moving back, slowly.

The only tympoles left here were the ones too lazy or too weak to leave. As heartless as it sounds us helping them by kicking out Toad is going to hurt all the tympoles we already helped to leave this pool by doing the raindance. Just as Laki said there isn't enough for everyone to be happy. There is always going to be someone who will suffer. The Toad is just trying to survive.

The Murkrow was a totally different problem. That was them eating food that was completely unhealthy. They had too much in food options. This is that there is not enough food for all the Pokemon to survive. They are all not suppose to survive, many will get eaten or die before they become Toads. That is why they are born in clutches in the first place.

Do they have to be born in clutches? In the games and anime you don’t really see more than one or two eggs at a time (eggecute aside).

The Loanan humans could also let their population spiral and not have enough food for everyone, but they have the cultural knowledge not to. Pokémon could learn the same.

We are literally standing in a spawning pool where clutches of eggs are laid so that they are hatched to be tympoles. Do they have to be born in clutches, that how they seem to be born naturally in the wild, I'm sure you could eat all the eggs but a few that happens in real life all the time. Seems like this bit hinges on a bit of information we just don’t have: whether these eggs were laid from one mating or many rapid successive matings.

Still, I think it’s worth trying to make there be enough to go around. Magic is real in Pokémon so you can work around the normal thermodynamics that limit that sort of thing.

“Stop it.” You tell the large pokemon. Well, you suppose it’s not that tall, since you’re taller, but it sure seems a lot bigger up close. “Stop it!” You repeat after it ignores you and lifts another Tympole.

This time you got it’s attention though. It drops this one on the wet mud carelessly, then huffs. You don’t need Gardevoir or Keira to translate for you. It’s asking what you’re going to do about it.

“Those pokemon are young and weak. It’s not fair! Pick on somebody your own size.” You let your anger get a little ahead of you. It’s only after the words escape your mouth that you realize the relative parity in height between the both of you. You’re a little taller, but it’s a lot thicker.

“Gardevoir, can you get Hana back here with Telekinesis?” As you ask, you almost turn your head back so you project your voice to Gardevoir, but you remember Laki’s lessons and keep your eyes on the Seismitoad.

It tries to sucker punch you. No, that’s Drain Punch! Either way, you see it coming from a mile away. Laki’s wrestling training is still fresh in your mind, and she focused on both remembering to always be ready, and on what to do in this very specific footing you find yourself and your opponent in. You expect your body to stumble to the side, but the mud under your shoes and muscle memory seem to work in your favor and you side-step with what looks like incredible ease. The heavy pokemon is caught completely off balance and stumbles forward.

Although you know that only half a second has gone by, it feels like an eternity. The huge beast is completely vulnerable now, and you see Mace looking to unleash sandy heck on it. Your other pokemon are moving in too.

But you’re closer. Much closer.

This Seismetoad could have brought all the stragglers to the next pond, and she would have had everything left in this one all to herself instead of having to try and get it before the babies.

You move on instinct, grabbing it’s arm and shifting it’s weight. It comes down to the mud and you follow. On purpose! You know that under ideal circumstances, you wouldn’t be able to pull this off, but you managed to

“Mace! Gravity!” You yell as you move yourself on top of it and secure your grip. You don’t feel like you need it, but you’re not taking any chances.

“I’m coming!” Hana yells as she pushes forward. She lifts her leg through the mud to get closer and help you out. As she valiantly and much more successfully navigates through it this time, motivated by the urge to help you, the gravity kicks in and plants her face right in the mud. She struggles enough to pull her face out. “I’m okay. My fault.”

She has worse luck than you do. She could have managed to walk under the gravity if the mud weren’t so bad.

The frog pokemon struggles a bit under you, but it becomes very clear very quickly that you’re in total control. It inhales like it’s preparing for something, but gives up on that idea due to your added weight. You secure it’s arm even tighter to make sure you’re good.

Laki, who was in a full run, comes to a gentle and slow stroll. The others follow. Mace and Gobble help Hana up as soon as it’s clear you’ve won the day.

“Wow. Soft Hands.” Laki says, her clothes and hair pulling down hard thanks to the gravity. “That was...wow.”

“Yeah.” Even Abigail looks pretty blown away. “You’re a lot tougher than you let on.”

Keira looks amazed too. You can’t help but feel a little ego boost from all the girls reacting like that.

“So, you caught it the old way.” Laki tells you. “Are you going to train it?”

“No.” You tell Laki, hoping she won’t be too disappointed you’re not following her island culture. “But I’d better not catch it bullying pokemon like this again.” You warn with more harshness in your voice than you expected. It’s not much, but for you, it’s a lot. And the looks of slight surprise from the girls makes that clear. “Now go on. Get out of here. Go start a fish farm or something!” You say as you get up and let it go. You give it an extra shove. Not to be mean, but to make sure it doesn’t regain it’s balance until it stumbles an extra bit of distance away.

You bask a little in the looks the girls give you. They’re not exactly fawning, but you can tell everyone’s impressed. You feel great about that, but you still also have a nagging feeling about Seismitoad and the greater implications of what you saw today. The food and resource issue with it and all the other Tympole here bugs you. But you push the thought away for now. You’ve done more than enough to make a difference, even if you didn’t solve all the problems forever.

“I suppose we’ll clean up for a bit before we head out again.” Laki says, looking over Hana and the mud splattered all over her front. You didn’t come out completely mud free either.

“Sorry.” Hana says apologizes to everyone. She’s buried under a bunch of comments about it not being her fault, including yours, and she looks embarrassed at everyone telling her why she doesn’t need to apologize.

“Okay. Okay!” Hana response. “I get it. Come on, Gobble. You got all messy helping me up. Let’s get clean. You too, Tirtouga. I appreciate the effort.” You didn’t even see the shelled pokemon that was under her. It’s fine, of course, other than the mud.

Abigail has that same smug look on her face. She looks at you, then down at your crotch. What is she doing? “What, not as excited about wrestling this time?” She says quietly to tease you.

The memory of wrestling her at the Fighting temple floods into your mind. Laki, with her great hearing, turns around. She’s interested in how you’re going to respond to that.

Laki and Abigail have been getting along great since last night. You don’t want to disturb that, but you aren’t sure what the best move is.

“Why are you so interested?” You ask Abigail, putting on your own smug smile.

Abigail is caught off balance. A bit of mud that was still on her face comes loose and plops onto the ground while she struggles to come up with a witty rejoinder and takes too long.

“Ha!” Laki laughs at Abigail’s expense. “Busted.”

“Busted?” Abigail is off balance now. “I didn’t even- You just-” Her voice cracks. The more she tries to deny it, the worse it looks, even if it’s just an unfounded accusation meant to poke fun at her. You can read that in the feeling of her aura instinctually.

Hey! That’s right! You’ve been becoming more aware of people’s feelings and intent lately. You hadn’t really realize it, but it’s this sense you’re starting to develop from all your aura practice. At least, you think so. It seems a lot more focused on people and pokemon you’re really familiar with.

“I don’t blame you.” Hana joins in. You thought she went to wash up but she forgot some stuff. “That was pretty hot.” Hana begins to blush right after getting that out, but she pushes past it. “I mean, it was, right?”

“Yup.” Laki says matter-of-factly.

Eyes turn to Abigail. “Oh come on. No matter what I say you’re going to use it to burn me.”

“Looks like she can learn after all.” Laki puts the small redhead in a playful headlock and begins walking her away with Hana to get washed up.

You and Keira and your pokemon end up following a bit behind.

“It bothers me too.” She confesses. You're confused about what she means for a second, but you realize she’s talking about the Tympole. “It’s not the death that bothers me. It’s the suffering. Not everything makes it to old age. Not everything passes on something to a new generation. It’s always bothered me. The ghosts of the young that didn’t know much beyond suffering never need help crossing to the next world. They’re so eager to go.” She sighs and looks back at the small muddied pond. “We did a lot of good today, thanks to you. Sorry, I don’t mean to take the joy away from that.”

And even with the seriousness of the initial topic, she seems like she’s in a much better mood than she was before. She’s still figuring out her life, but she seems much less stressed about it. “I suppose it’s a matter of understanding your priorities. Ask what you want out of life and go for it.” She says, thinking deeply. That last thought of hers seemed to very especially help her sort her mood. You feel like all the times listening to her and chatting are starting to produce some results in that noggin of hers. She's close to something, anyway.

You get cleaned up and back on the road. The gym isn’t far now. You should arrive just before it gets too late. Your ground is making surprisingly good time now. Abigail still rides atop Tropius, but she’s looking like she’s regained a lot of energy.

“So, think up any ideas for the gym?” Hana asks. “Togepi and Chinchou are the two I’ll choose. I don’t know what order, or which I’ll pick if we can only use one each. I’m guessing since we’re asking for a triple battle it’ll be one to two each, anyway. Got any plans? I’m not exactly on yours and Laki’s level.” She puts a hand out to stop you from countering that. “It’s true. I don’t have as much experience. That’s not me putting myself down. I want to help and not just be there taking up space. So, um, yeah. Got any advice?”

“Want to practice?” You ask.

“Yeah?” She asks. “I mean. Yes. That’s an affirmative, not a question.” She further clarifies. “I could use it. But uh, how do you usually prepare?”

“Laki’s the one with the plans.” You confess. “I’ve got more of an improvisational battling style. We should ask her.”

“Huh. Okay.” She nods, taking that in.

You both come to Laki looking for advice.

“I’ve been thinking about it a lot.” Laki looks relieved to admit it. “The gym is competitve. There’s no one single trainer you might fight for the badge. The strongest six battlers all have a right to take on challengers. They used to just have one top leader, but it got too competitive.” She dismisses that line of thought with a wave of her hand. “I don’t know who the six are, but they’re all going to have a lot of experience. With that many factors to control for, and since there aren’t any Electric and Fighting types I can think of, I’m going to depend on Wailord’s bulk to start out with. They probably have ways of dealing with Flying types, so I want to screen for that before using Chatot. Meowth is who I’ll choose if I know they don’t have any pokemon too fast or with Bullet Punch and need to duel one to keep it busy, and Bergmite is my fallback if we need area attacks.”

“Wow. You’ve really thought about this.” Hana compliments.

“Must have been painful.” Abigail tosses in.

But Laki is too focused to let that bother her. Her mind is on the battle ahead. “So you’re practicing before the gym huh? What sort of practice?”

“Yeah. I want to go over the fundamentals again.”

“Good idea, Soft Hands.” Laki stretches. “Coach used to make me practice the basics once a week. Keeps bad habits from forming.”

“Wait, there are parts pole vaulting that aren’t basic?” Abigail. “I thought it was jus-GHK” She’s cut off by Laki pushing her chest and making her fall backwards. She gets up, mad. “Hey! No hitting boobs!”

“No boobs to hit.” Laki retorts.

Abigail, rather than getting mad, has more of a rivalrous, respectful smile for Laki. Or maybe that’s a revenge planning smile. Either way, their new dynamic is interesting but a little unsettling.

The three of you practice the basics. A lot of it is just cycling through the moves your pokemon know, jumping, dodging, and general moving about in difficult areas. As you all run your pokemon through those, you each test each other on pokemon types, weaknesses, abilities, and moves. It’s a little embarrassing to admit, but you do end up being reminded of a few basic things you’ve forgotten. At least it looks like you’re not the only one. You guess that’s why fundamentals are important. What's more, is everyone got used to working together.

You can’t help but notice how powerful Glaceon is. You haven’t had much of a chance to get to know it, but it can really dish it out.

Tirtouga, Chinchou, Meowth, Wailord, Chatot, Tropius, Cutiefly, Ninjask, Conqueror, and Bergmite all look like they’ve become good friends. The others are a bit more standoff-ish.

Huh. It’s odd, but you’re starting to feel like your pokemon have formed their own little clique. They talk to the others sometimes, but they seem to always just gravitate towards each other.

“Everyone looks great!” Keira compliments as all the non-flying pokemon take turns leaping or climbing over Wailord.

“Yeah.” Laki pets Belladonna. “I feel like we can take on the world.”

“I’ll settle for just the gym.” Hana jokes. “But I am pretty pumped.”

You look down at the gym building just down the path. You can’t exactly call it’s surroundings a village, because there are just the occasional buildings dotting the road with no clear barrier, but there are definitely a few small clusters around.

“Then what are we waiting for? Let’s grab a quick lunch and go challenge the gym!”

Even though everyone is hyped up to go battle, the mention of you making lunch changes the mood someone. The hype morphs a little as hunger sets in. It doesn’t damper, though.

“I’ll help.” Hana volunteers. “I’m starting to get why you like cooking so much. I mean, I’m not that good at it, but it’s nice. Plus there’s a lot of dicing and I can do that in like, two seconds.” She awkwardly shrugs and laughs a little. “That is, as long as I’m not stepping on your toes or anything.”

“No. I love cooking with you.” You mean it. “As long as you don’t feel like you have to or anything.”

“Oh my-” Abigail throws up her arms. “How did you guys even start dating?”

“It’s a whole story.” Laki smiles. As she’s telling that to Abigail, you and Hana and Gobble start cooking. Keira comes in to help too.

“So, what’s on the menu, my good chef?” Hana asks.

That’s a good question.

Say, I’ve been thinking of plans Herb has, and what Keira said about priorities. I think Herb should take an assessment of what irons he has in the fire right now and how he’s going to tackle them.

For instance, Gardevoir’s memories. What’s our next move? I know in the immediate term, we’re going to take on this gym, go to the festival, and see Val’s contest. But there’s some other promises we want to make sure we don’t forget too.

What do you guys think we should make sure Herb remembers? I can write up a list of what I remember.

You quickly fry up some brain food while Laki and Abigail go over you, Hana, and Laki becoming an item. It’s not something you have a specific recipe for, but you can make something well enough for the task. Mm! Tasty!

“Wow. Hana. Impressive sluttiness.” Abigail comments as she scarfs the food down.

You’re about to stand up for Hana, but she answers Abigail first with a shy but proud smile. “Thanks. I was really nervous.” She lowers her voice and almost whispers. “It was awesome!”

“...Right. So you guys decided to share Herb here like a slab of meat, huh? You know, when I was your age, we never did stuff like that.”

“Yeah huh.” Laki looks skeptical. “I’m still not totally convinced you’re older than any of us. I’m starting to suspect you’re just a kid.”

“You’re just confused because you’re used to being outsmarted by little kids.” Abigail shoots back.

“Bitch.” Laki smiles.

“Slut.” Abigail smiles back. “So, come on, tell me the rest.”

Laki fills Abigail in on the story as you head down to the gym. Bella enjoys a ride on Laki’s shoulders, while Dice, Mace, and Gobble play wrestle and end up all rolling down the small hill. They make it perfectly fine, of course. Sorbet is surprisingly good at going down a much steeper part of the hill. You suppose an Ice pokemon that lives on mountains would be good at that sort of thing, now that you think about it. Hana and Cubone seem to be getting along as they go down, too.

“So wait. Part of your whole island harem thing is that weirdo rapey custom when he pins you and you’re in?” Abigail asks. You were sort of only half paying attention to Laki telling it. Your mind was on the gym battle.

“It's not weird or rapey, but yeah. Why?”

“Well, that little thing at the Fighting temple doesn’t count, right?”

Everyone exchanges a quick look with each other, some of you wondering about the answer to that, others wondering how everyone else will react to that question. When you and Abigail catch each other’s eyes, you both feel pretty awkward. Her face turns from casual curiosity to embarrassment, and you’re pretty sure awkward embarrassment might also be on your face too. But the moment is interrupted.

“Challengers?” A man in a fighting outfit greets you. Everyone quickly bows with all the formalities.

“Yes, if it’s not too late.” Keira says.

“Not at all.” He says, opening the door. “Right this way. Please leave your footwear at the entrance.”

You all oblige, and out on these neat little generic slippers they have for people. Gobble puts some on too, despite not needing too.

“Are you one of the gym leaders?”

He laughs. “Maybe one day. But uh, don’t tell them I said that. Things get competitive around here and I have a lot of training to catch up. Humility is the only self discipline I’m good at, and that’s much easier when there aren’t others.” He laughs at his self deprecating joke. “So, here’s the lowdown on the gym.”

“Lowdown?” Keira asks.

“I went to school on the mainland.” He clarifies for her. “Umm, beloved prestiess.”

She laughs, but looks a little distraught. Another islander that doesn’t know much about their culture. “Beloved is a very formal title for special occasions. You don’t have to add it.”

“Right. Sorry.” He adds. “I only ever met a Ghost Priestess when my great aunt died.”

“Oh? Who was it?”

“I can’t remember her name, but she was tall, and had long hair.”

“I know her! She’s-’

“Guys? The gym?” Abigail interrupts.

“Right. Sorry.” He and Keira both say at the same time.

The room he leads you to is big and open, with lots of bleachers on the side. The plain dirt battle area has lines along the floor marking different areas. The thing you really notice is how long and thin they are. Groups of fighting pokemon and trainers stand around. Some practicing moves, most chatting. A few working bags or doing exercises. It’s a casual atmosphere with everyone wearing apparently whatever makes them comfortable to train in, so it’s hard to tell ranks.

“Yup. Long and thin.” He answers the question you didn’t even vocalize yet. “Throws everyone off. Not a lot of room to move around, so a lot of tricky battlers have issues here. Direct power types do best.”

You, Laki, and Hana all have the same reaction. That could be bad news for a lot of your pokemon.

“What about triple battles? Can we do those?”

“Are you kidding? Oh man, they’d love that. But as a head’s up, you’d be staggered. One of us, one of you, one of us, one of you, and so forth. Six pokemon on the field would be a blast. I’ve only ever seen four at a time, myself.”

That’s an interesting type of battle. Each pokemon is limited in who they can target, unless they can accomplish the difficult task of getting over, under, or narrowly around their opponent. Area attacks are trickier too.

“So, any questions?”

My suggestion so far is to use Bella as our frontliner, pretty sure she's the only one with fighting resistance and she's able to take more than a few hits thanks to the sludge and her giga drain. There's also Dice, I feel like this is a decent chance to test out just how far his "dancing" skills can go.

I post from mobile, so if I’m killing time between updates I don’t get any sort of notification, like I would with a tab on a browser window on PC. I could theoretically check myself every 5 minutes starting from a half hour after the last update but that can be tricky to pay attention to. But if 10 minutes works fine for most, I don’t want to slow things down.

You know, as Keira appears to be approaching a decision on whether she’d like to pursue a career as a fertility priestess, I’ve been thinking about what sort of role that branch would perform.

And then recently I heard that something like 10% of women say they find sex to be regularly painful and it made sense to me that they’d often help people figure out how to have sex in ways that work for them.

You know, “joy to the world” (Jeremiah was a bullfrog) is a good theme song for Herb.

He wants people to be happy, loves the ladies, and is a straight shootin’ sonofagun.
